Solved: Reformatting Dell Dimension 4550

Q: Solved: Reformatting Dell Dimension 4550

Hi, I am trying to reformat a Dell Dimension on Windows XP Home, and have never had a problem like this, don't know what I am missing, the machine was purchased with XP home on it, and there is a reinstall disk. When you do the reformatt when it comes back up and runs through the process it does not ask for the product key? It reformats and when machine is supposedly all set up and ready to go half the information such as ethernet card, audio drivers etc is not there. If you are doing a complete reinstall should it not ask for the product key??? This really has me puzzled, I have reformatted 3 times, and am not coming up with the proper setup. I am going to work now and will not be back until this evening, but anyones input into this would be greatly appreciated.

Tks Chris

Unable to use the reinstall disk that came with computer. The bios will not allow me to make the cd boot first. The control F11 does not work. When I boot with win 98 boot disk at the A prompt the c drive is inaccessible, message is failure. Downloaded "Dsrfix.zip" to fix the F11 key only worked at saving unable to restore. The partion is mess up and only went back to last december and that was bad. The operating system is Win xp home.I have all disks from dell. If i try to use the reinstall cd in windows it tells me I have a newer verison and will not load. When I go to details it tells to boot with cd, control F11 not working and this cd can not be loaded from dos.

The only problem is the front panel headers. I need to find out what is what. Has anyone solved this yet? Ive seen some other Dell models done this way. The Intel MObo in it is an E210882.

I am planning on upgrading my old Dell Dimension 4550 to Vista after Christmas.
I am sure when you first read this you'll think, blimey what's he doing that for, but it only came with an 18Gb hard drive and 256mb of RAM.

I am planning on replacing these components with at least a 160Gb hard drive and 1Gb or RAM

Question 1;
- What kind of hard drive does it take?
#i.e; 2" hard drive or 3" hard drive

Question 2;
- What kind of RAM does it take
#i.e; DDR etc...

Question 3;
- Is this completely insane or can it be done, and done well???

Thanks very much and have a very Merry Christmas

I have a DELL Dimension 4550 that is giving the following error at bootup:

lsass.exe - System Error

"The endpoint format is invalid."

You hit OK and the pc reboots and message comes back each time. The strange thing I have noticed is I have 512MB ram installed in this pc and the system is reading only 32MB. It boots to safe mode fine. I even tried the memtest on bootup and it is only seeing 32mb of ram! I have removed the module and reseated and cleaned the contacts. No good. Is this a case of just buying new ram? Or could it be deeper than this?

A:Dell Dimension 4550 issues

Hey!

I was doing a little research and found out that lsass.exe is a system process of the Microsoft Windows security mechanism. More than likely from what I read you have a virus of some type.

I would recommend you get the following scans done in safe mode: http://www.liutilities.com/products/campaigns/plib/rbplib/
and

PS: Check out this site for a lot of information about lsass.exe (I used it to help you):

I saw a few threads about this stuff and saying it could be the power supply. It could be that but I wanted to make a 100% sure before I bought one. Here is the story, my girlfriend was taking apart the computer to clean it, it had worked before she just unplugged it any everything. She ended up cleaning up the computer from the inside and outside, but when she put it back together it won't turn on. When I plug the power cable to the power supply a little green light will light up on the mobo. But thats about it, I've tried a different socket and different wire with no changes. The light by the power button doesn't light up at all. Wondering if you guys think something could have messed up. I tried to check the connections and everything seems to be ok.....help please!!
Thanks

I know I have to take this computer with old OS out of service, but I wanted to know if this is a good candidate for ubuntu or a NAS server or media server. It runs well and has maximum RAM. It does have SATA.
Are people using this as a movie server in their homes? Can this be a file repository and then automatically sync with the cloud to backup files? I have a router that would allow me to access remotely, but thought if its mirrored in the cloud I could access files from my onedrive. I am also considering moving to google doc, or amazon or some other cloud server for my files, but I thought if I kept syncronized files on my home network it would speed things up and reduce bandwidth.
Thanks for yout help in advance.

Hi. I'm new to all this over clocking stuff. I recently found this 7 year old dell I had and it didn't have good ram or gfx card, so I got 512mb ram for it, which boosted it up to 640 >_>, and also got a 256MB ATI Raedon x850 gfx card for it. I was playing this game the other day, and its not that much of a game that needs really good specs, its just Counter-Strike. I should have had 100 FPS constant, but it was really bad. The game was skipping a lot, like I would try to step forward, it would freeze for like 2 seconds, and if I help the button to keep going forward, after the 2 seconds, I might have actually moved, but whats the point if the guy is behind the door, and then it lags for 2 seconds? He pops out and shoots me in that 2 seconds my screen is frozen... Also the keyboard was lagging a lot, like if you were to type, Hello, it would take about 2 seconds to actually show up. So I'm guessing there is something wrong with some ****... the CPU is only 2.00GHZ, Pentium 4. I tried to over clock it, but when I went into the BIOS, it didn't have any options for over clocking... so I am guessing Dell locked the BIOS so you cant OC it... so is there anyway to unlock it so I could OC it? Thanks.

Alright. Here's the deal. I have a Dell Dimension 4550 desktop at this moment. I want to upgrade this, on the theory that upgrading the old system will give me a workable (if not spectacular) system. My total budget is preferably around 300 dollars, though I imagine that I could go over that if needed.

(Oi, it won't let me post the link to the documentation... how annoying.)

I have a Radeon 9500 Pro video card in it at present, and the rest is pretty much stock-it's a 2.4 GHz processor, I believe, with nothing else spectacular. It came with 256 MB of DDR SDRAM, and I've added a 512 stick as well, for a total of 700-something.

My current possible intentions:
I want to upgrade the RAM-if I can get it at a good price I'll replace one or both of the ram modules with 512, for 1 gig of ram. I think I read someplace that this particular model of computer doesn't support dual-channel ram, anyway, so...

I want to upgrade the video card. It is, as the link will state, a 4x AGP slot, and I want the best I can get within reason. The current power supply is 250 watts-I can try replacing it if absolutely necessary. (Does the video card need updated that badly? I'm not good at comparing them.)

Bear in mind that I don't need a high-end gaming rig here, I just want to be able to run some newer games. I'd like to be able to run Oblivion or Fallout 3, for example. Lot of newer games (for me) that I'd like to be able to run.

A:Upgrading a Dell Dimension 4550, need help

Hi

as a newbie you cant post links, as for Dell PC's why bother upgrading it, just sell it and buy a new unit, easier in the long run and cheaper, from what i remember Dell use specific PSU's in some of their machines so if you wanted to swap it out it would have to be a Dell PSU.

You can pick up a good spec PC for a few quid nowadays as they are getting cheaper all the time.

Hi

Does the drive read the OS disc in the current windows.

Do not forget to either have the Dell Drivers disc handy or download the drivers from dell to a flash drive.

If you are using the Original Dell OS disc it is bootable.

If the drive is working the pressing F12 when the Dell logo appears should get you to the Boot Device Menu. At that point it couldn't hurt to run the drive diagnostics Since you mention issues with windows. (Boot Diagnostic Partition) or you can boot the Dell drivers disc for the Dell Diagnostics.

if the disc is bootable and the drive is operating properly then you should be able to boot from it in the boot device menu.

You could test the disc in another computer too.

I am familiar with the Dell Dimension 2350 through the Dimension 4600 and if the disc and the drive are good it works.

Look on the motherboard at the Northbridge heatsink as shown in the attached pic. There will either be one or two wires than run across the heatsink that connect to "loops" or "eyelets" on the motherboard (the red arrows point to the "loops" or "eyelets"). See if one of the "loops" or "eyelets" has pulled loose from the board.

I have a Dell Dimension 4550 that I've had to reformat the drive and reinstall Windows XP. Now I can't get any sound from the system. The diagnsotic test work fine (including sound) but nothing from any media players, itunes, etc.. problem seems to be that I do not have any Audi devices installed. The system only has what was shipped as standard so I assume this is some sort of inbuilt device. Your dell should have a driver disk, run it and install all the drivers. If you don't have this disk you can download the drivers at dell.com, click on desktops then home and office, then the support tab on top. Then pick your model from the list and follow the instructions

Have you tried Dell?

If they dont have a win 7 driver an earlier one can be used if it is installed in compatibility mode.

I solved this problem myself after spending days searching on the web but since the solution seemed completely unintuitive, I thought I'd post it for any other frustrated user.

The problem

Last year, I installed a PCI card in my Dell Dimension 4550 to allow me to swap an old IDE drive for a new Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 SATA hard drive. The drive worked fine for a while but then it periodically failed to be picked up on boot - the Silicon Image 3112A controller would fail to find the hard drive and then the grub loader would fail. I figured out that if I physically switched the connection to the other SATA port on the PCI card, the drive would be recognised on the next boot most of the time. This was a very annoying solution. Recently, the drive started disappearing while I was using Windows XP which was particularly worrying so I set aside some time to finally fix the problem.

My setup

The SATA drive is set to SATA/150. Besides the SATA drive, I have an IDE drive set to master (on the master cable) which is my main boot drive. I have an Ubuntu installation on the SATA drive. The system dual-boots using grub. I've disconnected one of my CD drives and my floppy drive just in case to avoid power problems.

Things which didn't work
Changing PCI slots for the SATA adapter card
Changing IDE drive to cable select
Updating BIOS or chipset from Dell's website
Crying like a little girl

The solution

I disabled the built-in ethernet adapter supplied by Dell b... Read more

I'm trying to solve a sound problem on someone else's computer, and it's driving me insane.

Symptoms: No sound playback in Windows at all. The problem started out of nowhere, no one has any idea how it happened. It's an integrated sound card, and I'd have chalked it up to a dead sound card if it weren't for the fact that the audio still works on Dell's diagnostics tool accessed during boot-up. Integrated sound is enabled in BIOS. The sound device is recognized by Windows and shows up in Device Manager, but doesn't report any problems at all, it just won't play sound at all.
Almost forgot to mention: Sigmatel HD audio, and yes, Microsoft UAA bus driver is installed too. Windows XP SP3.

Things I've tried: Uninstalling and reinstalling all manner of drivers. Updated bios, reinstalled chipset drivers, reinstalled sound drivers about a hundred times. Thinking it was a driver conflict beyond my reckoning, I backed up all data and did a factory reformat. Still no sound.

So, it can't be a dead card, since it plays the test song just fine in Dell diagnostics outside of Windows. But if a complete reformat can't fix this problem, what possibly could?

A:No sound on Dell Dimension even after reformatting

1. re: hearing sound from Dell;s diagnostic vs hearing "sound"
Your computer can create mono-tonic tones without needing a sound card or audio drivers and codecs. I'm going to guess if you run the Beepex tool in Windows you'll still hear simple tones (just not audio files)

2. Check Problem Devices report

Make sure all your devices are connected and powered on
Click Start->Run, enter: msinfo32. Click the + sign next to Components to expand it
Click Problem Devices. Anything appear?
If yes, click on it, Ctrl-A to select all, Ctrl-C to copy it, Ctrl-V to paste into next post
3. Generate and attach a DirectX report

click Start->Run, enter dxdiag
Notice progress in lower left window corner
When done, click Save Information button and save to your Desktop
In TechSpot, use the paper clip icon to attach the report. (If you don't see icon you may need to first click Go Advanced)
4. click Start->Run, enter services.msc. Scroll to Windows Audio. Verify Status=Started and StartupType=Automatic

/* edit */
I should clarify: The computer can play monotonic tones directly to an internal speakers - which, ummmm... no pun intended "sounds" like applies to your case

The system's fan was very loud so I put in a new power supply and then everything booted up fine. Unfortunately, that didn't solve the problem. It was the Motherboard fan making all the noise.

So, I put the old power supply back in and now the system doesn't power up at all. I checked all connections & I replaced the power cord and tried a different electrical outlet.

I even put the new P/S back in and nothing changed. It still doesn't power up. It's dead!

Any suggestions?

A:My Dell Dimension 4550 won't power up. New P/S, power cord, etc. doesn't help.?

gbsdirect said:

Do you mean the CPU fan ?
If so then I wonder if the CPU has been cooked

I would start by dispersing all internal voltage.
Detach the power cord
Press the power button in for 20 seconds
Re=attach the power cord
Try again

If it didn't fix then remove all addons, usb devices really anything attached (except screen and keyboard and power cord)
And try again

If it didn't fix then, confirm all internal connections are secure (even detach the dvd drive{s}

If it didn't fix then try disconnecting all fans (what !) for about 10 secs (turning on) I once had a fan of all things, that stopped my computer from turning on (unbelievable, I know)

Lastly, check the CPU for heat damage !

hey guys. after a good 5 years of use i think my processor has pretty much had it. with noticeable heat damage and poor performance, im ready for a switch. but im having trouble figuring out what will actually work with the computer properly, and the last thing i wanna do is order something that im just gonna have to send back. so some input will be appreciated

the computer runs off of a intel 845pe chipset (im not sure if that matters) and im pretty sure its socket type 478. on the dell website it says on the system information that the mobo will support up to a 3.06 ghz processor (a speed that i would be satisfied with honestly). here is the rest of the information on the systems processor.

Microprocessor
Microprocessor type
IntelŪ PentiumŪ 4 microprocessor that runs at 1.80, 1.90, 2.0, or 2.20 GHz internally and 400 MHz externally; or 2.26, 2.4, 2.53, 2.66, 2.8, or 3.06 GHz internally and 533 MHz externally
L1 cache
8 KB first-level
L2 cache
integrated 256-KB or 512-KB at full microprocessor speed

so yeah any suggestions on what would work properly on my computer would be cool. links to websites that sell it, even better. thanks guys

Today I reformatted my Dimension 4550 computer, but I have misplaced my driver CD and must download and install all my drivers. This is, of course, impeded by my ability to find a working Ethernet Controller driver.

I have used the Dell website for the Broadcom driver for the Ethernet Card but it gives me the message "This zip file is part of a multidisk zip file. Please insert the last disk of the set."

(Note that I bought my computer in 2001. I have never heard of "Broadcom" before today and I'm wondering if newer 4550 models use a different ethernet controller than the one I own.)

I googled for other fixes but none of them seem to work.

Please note that I have no drivers for any other devices installed beyond basic Windows installation. According to my Device manager, I am missing drivers for all of the following components.

-Camera (Probably the USB webcam I have plugged in but haven't bothered to install.)
-Ethernet Controller
-Multimedia Audio Contoller (I'm not so worried about this. I know where to get it.)
-Network Controller (Possibly my wireless network card?)
-PCI Input Device

The Dell website is confusing and there are a lot of drivers up for download and I need help figuring out which ones I need. Almost all of them say "Optional" so I can't figure it out.

Please help?

Hi
Lets see what we can do.

First install the Chipset Driver:
http://support.dell.com/support/down...7&fileid=56457

Lan Driver:
http://support.dell.com/support/down...5&fileid=66981

I know you have downloaded it before, but please do so again. I had the same issue the other day. I ended up redownloading it and had no issues.

Once you have internet access run Everest under my signature and attach the report to the thread. The report will tell me what hardware you have.

Hello,

1.Ok, so, here's the deal. My church just bought a brand new hp this last january. It has Vista. We upgraded the graphics card to an ATI Radeon X1600 Pro. We also upgraded the Power to a 450 watt Maddog. The reason for upgrading this card was so that we could run S-Video from the computer/card to an HD TV. So, we turn on the computer and when we go to turn on the TV and active the extended desktop, the computer screen blinks acouple of times then nothing. It just goes back to where it was. We can make the HD TV be the Primary screen but we want it to be an extended desktop and run a program for words and scripture and that sort of stuff. we've tried everything. Called HP they said that this card wont work for that pupose. But the circuit city guys promised that it would work. So for the last couple of months we have been using a laptop to do all of this. And of course the graphics card isn't the best and we have a brand new computer just sitting right there. So, if you have any info that will help us with this that would be outstanding. Now.

2. We are willing to swap the HP for the 4550 Dimension that is at my Pastors house. But this card will not fit in the Dell. So, we are kind of in a pickle.

Please help, i've been to forum after forum about this subject.

-Thank you in advance.

It would appear that forum poster, wizard2u, successfully installed an evga 6800gs in his 4500.  I can't speak for other brands, but that card worked.  So disregard information you see below except for the benchies.
Dale
I'm going to give you an update on using 6800gs cards in your 4550.  It appears that the 6800gs is too long and bumps into an ide hard drive connector on the motherboard.
http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=dim_other&message.id=271826
This picture posted by Pro depicts the mobo of a 4500.  The case dimensions and motherboard diagrams of the 4500 and 4550 are the same.  Thus the 6800gs will not fit as Pro states.
The next links show the relative speed of the 6600GT in comparison to the  Ati offerings you mentioned.
http://www.tomshardware.com/2005/12/02/vga_charts_viii/page11.html
http://www.tomshardware.com/2005/12/02/vga_charts_viii/page16.html
Granted these benchies are run in computers with faster cpus, faster memory,  than a 4550, and with pci-e vid cards.  The only point is to demonstrate that the 6600GT is faster than the ATi solutions.
The only hope is that nvidia will release the 7600GT as an agp card and make it shorter than the 6800gs.
Good Luck

Hi,

I know this looks like it was previously solved, but it seems intel does not publish the driver i need anymore.

I just reinstalled my operating system on my dell 4550 dimension. I am getting "The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)" for my ethernet controller, multimedia audio controller, pci input device and usb device.

I have seen the other posts in closed threads about the intel site and the fact that the dell drivers don't work for the ethernet controller. The problem is this linke
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Deta...ional&lang=eng
does not take me anywhere good.

I also cannot work out where to find any of the other drivers.

I have run PC Wizard. It tells me my network card is 82801/DB/DBL (ICH/ICH4-L) PRO/100 VE network connection. I am running Windows XP Home v 5.1 SP1.

I wasted an hour calling Dell. The dude made me run a scan to see if my hard drive was working. It is. Then he gave me a phone number where another dude tried to charge me to get the right drivers. Thanks.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You cant remote get current configuration on a machine that has no hard drive from another machine.
F2 Bios various menus will show what is in the machine.
There isn't any way to do what you are asking from a remote machine.
CPU info, Ram Info,  Video Card Info etc can be seen from bios.

I like to hear forum members opinion.
Just recently fixed the issue with Dell Dimension 4300, machine didn't power up when power switch pressed. I replaced original dead 250W PSU with new 430W dual fan and now comp is running. This PC is:
Intel 845 1.6 GHz internally and 400 MHz externally. 4 DMA channels and SDRAM PC133 512 mb of memory.
I also upgraded USB to 2.0, nice 128MB video card and some other goodies.
Now, I got another stock Dell Dimension 8100 without papers, but I check and this particular one has:
Intel 850 1.4 GHz internally and 400 MHz externally. 8 DMA channels and 384 mb RDRAM of memory. Nothing was done to this machine, and it also have original working 250W PSU.
What better to do? Keep the Dimension 4300 or remove goodies that compatible with 8100 motherboard, including fabricating in, new, dual fan PSU and excluding memory, I assume SDRAM and RDRAM not compatible and transfer to Dimension 8100?
Is 8100 machine more advanced then 4300? I know they both pretty old and outdated. I personally bough 4300 for my dad in 2001. Is 8100 was produced later? I see that CPU is Intel 850 vs 845..
Guys, opinion welcome.
Thanks,
Alex

After a long line of BSOD errors ( http://forums.techguy.org/windows-vista/869607-bsod-back.html ) I finally had a crash during windows boot that... as far as I could tell, corrupted Windows vista.

I reformated the hard drive with Vista (I tried the Windows XP boot disc that came with the system but it would not launch from the CD drive). Then ran the updates, followed by loading my drivers.

Current problem: The computer is overheating and shutting down. This is happening within the first two minutes of me launching windows... like clock work.

I can get it to run if I open the side panel, put a fan directly on the system then... Launch windows in regular mode, wait two minutes for it to overheat then shut down. Then I let the desk fan cool it off for ten minutes, launch windows again in safe mode. I let safe mode run for about ten minutes, then I can reboot into regular mode without it over heating... as long as I keep the panel open and the desk fan blowing.

To try to fix this I have: Basic cleaning of fan vent intake, all the internal fans are spinning, including the fan on the graphic's card. Downloaded and installed the updated BIOS version. I have checked the ram for memory problems but, it did not find any. Tried to call Dell tech support but since I am no longer under warranty (comp is 1.5 years old) they will not assist me.

The only error message I am seeing at all is this before window is launched:

A few months ago the hard drive went bad on it. I replaced it. I got a friend to reinstall Windows XP and we thought it would work fine.

I have DSL, but I am unable to get on line with the Dell computer. Right now I am using a friends computer and its hooked up at my house.

The problems I have found are:

I have NO LAN settings - None. When I go to network connections for are NONE.

Then I go to devices, hardware and are bright yellow questions marks ?????? next to

    ?? Ethernet controller
    ?? Multi Media Audio Controller
    ?? PCI Input Drive
    ?? Texas Instruments RNDRS Adapter

I went to Dell's support site and I have no idea what drivers to download.

I downloaded some of them, but it did not help.

What do I need to do? Which ones do I download? Where do I need to get them from?

My daughter called me in panic, as her PC would not power up. Diagnosed PSU (Power Supply Unit) had failed. Obtained and fitted new PSU and PC powers up now. However, after initial screen showing XP is loading the screen goes blank and a few seconds later we get a blue screen saying: -
    STOP C00000218 {Registry File Failure}
\SystemRoot\System32\Config/DEFAULT or its log or alternative
IT is corrupt, absent or not writeable.

I am sure that initially the error said that the problem was with a hive file but that does not come up now, only the above error.

I tried rebooting using Normal, Safe ad Last Know Good Configuration without success ? still get same failure.

Her PC is a DELL (UK build) DIMENSION 5150 and is loaded with XP Home Edition and, I THINK, is at SP3.

Problem is that she cannot find the restore discs so cannot try anything yet.

Assuming that she does am I OK to use http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545/ to recover. I am concerned that this KB entry says: -
Warning Do not use the procedure that is described in this article if your computer has an OEM-installed operating system. The system hive on OEM installations creates passwords and user accounts that did not exist previously. If you use the procedure that is described in this article, you may not be able to log back into the recovery console to restore the original registry hives.

Before you do too much surgery, boot off of any XP CD. Get to the Recovery Console and type chkdsk /f/r. The Check Disk Utility will try and fix any error. If that fails then you can try the other repair method.

First, I have NO CLUE if this is the correct forum, so I hope you'll guide me if not.

I have a friend in dire straights, who can get a job if she has a working computer. Requirement is a P4 with XP, Word, and Excel. I have a Dell Dimension I bought around 2000. It is 2 computers ago for me, but still in flawless operating order, just too slow for what I need. I want to restore it to the original factory setup (it came with Windows ME, and I have the upgrade disk for XP Home), then upgrade to XP, install Office Standard (I have the original disks, and never installed them, and turn it over to her with all disks.

Among the hidden files on C is Dell>Backup. I have a number of Dell CDs that came with the computer, but over the years have lost the manuals telling me what to do. I could reformat and install an OEM version of XP Pro (never opened), but I'm not sure of the best way to go.

Would like to have this done by the end of the week, so she can start training with LiveOps, who my brother and sister-in-law work for.

Thanks for any help you can give!

    hi
A friend has asked me to help her with her computer, I do not know much about computers but I do know the best place to ask for advice.
The problem is that the computer will not boot up.
The PSU fan runs, the lights on the 2 dvd players light up then go out and that is about it.
If the start button is pressed again the cpu fan runs then stops.
The diagnostic lights on the front are A amber, B green, C amber, D green. her handbook suggests this is likely to be a memory fault so I removed one pair of memory sticks from the black sockets and tried again, same result. substituted these sticks for the ones in the white sockets again same result. It seems unlikely that both pairs of memory should fail at the same time so the diagnostic lights must be misleading.
I tried to access setup, the handbook gives F2 for this, but set up did not start.
That just about exhausts my trouble shooting ability so I am asking the experts <What do I do next? >
    regards
    phil

I have an old Dell Dimension computer ready to be discarded, but I would like to remove the hard drive first. I cannot find a way to open it. How do I open this thing?!!! Maggie

A:Solved: How to Open an Old Dell Dimension computer

There's likely buttons on the top and bottom that you press and it opens like it's hinged on the front.

Other models just have a latch that releases the side like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jsgynopUEiw

However that's just a guess as there are thousands of Dell Dimension models and you haven't mentioned which one you have.

Its an old Dell Dimension. I've upgraded the cpu from 600 to 1100, given it more ram, a bigger hard drive and now I'm replacing the DVD which didn't work. The machine recognized the old DVD but now the new one I've put in.

Are there any tricks to this? I have the CD as the master and the DVD as the slave. That was the old configuration.

Hard drive is attached with a PCI slot.

    Yes,

I have a dell dimension l933r pentium 3 that I got back in 2001. I have made a few upgrades to it over the years including a bigger Hard drive, upgraded memory to 512, added a ethernet card to it and better sound card.

I have windows xp home edition on it, with service pack 3. This will probaly sound a little silly to some but I upgraded my windows from xp to Vista knowing that I had memory for it but not knowing if the pc could handle it. I gave it a try and it worked for at least 10 minutes, then the pc froze so I restarted.

Then eventually it was telling me the pc didnt have enough memory for programs to operate correctly. so I went to restart again and right before windows logged off the screen turned blue and started loading a bunch of wierd numbers and said something about an error not sure what because before i could read all of it the pc turned off. Now when i turn on the pc it gets stuck on the dell screen. It wont boot into ms-dos mode or anything. I have tryed a few different hard drives on the pc thinking that might be it but no luck. I tryed the key comand by hitting delete to boot into msdos, sometimes it says entering setup and gets stuck on that or also hitting delete causes the screen to say hit <del> to enter setup but when I hit del it wont even change the status to entering setup.

basically i need to figure out what can be done. if this is a basic fix or possibly a motherboard error that can or cant be fixed. Plz help.

    thanks,

u need more than 512 of ram to run vista. im assuming u want to reinstall windows xp again?put the windows xp cd in and restart the computer and keep tapping F8 and u should see a black screen and in the left side corner it will blink in white press any key to boot from the cd. hit enter and go from there.512 of ram is perfect for xp.on a dell computer changing the boot order is easy if u have to get it to boot from a cd. hope this helps u.

Ok, this should be a very simple question and maybe my brain is just defragmented and I can't find the info.

I'm trying to boot my brand new Dell XP Pro system to the BIOS so that I can set the BIOS to boot from a CD. But I can't seem to figure out how to get into the BIOS, as hitting the Delete key doesn't seem to be working. I've tried hitting it at various times to no avail. I also can't figure out when to hit F8 to even get the system to boot into Safe Mode. So not sure what I'm doing wrong because never in the boot cycle does it state to what my Win98 machines do for accessing the BIOS.

For the record, the reason I'm trying to do this is because I made an ISO image of The Ultimate Boot CD so that I can boot my new Dell from this CD (as I do not have a Floppy Drive in it) so that I can then run Ranish Partition Manager and split my 80GB hard drive into 4 partitions.

However, I'm having a slight issue getting the machine to boot from this CD. I'm probably just doing some simple thing wrong.

Earlier today, I tried to turn on my computer and check my email. Well as it was loading, I was interupted by a blue Stop screen with the error code of like 0x00000050 or something rather. I searched the web for any remedies and such..none of which had worked. Upon further research i discovered that one of the newest updates was deamed the "pc killer". So i come home from work to discover that my roommate, who claims to know a lot about this kinda "techy" stuff..simply put in the "Microsoft Windows XP Professional Including Service Pack 1a." disc to restore my computer to factory. Well, it did in fact load up, but my monitor seems distored (as in icons seem enlarged and such). but i cannot connect to the internet and when i went into device manager, the section titled "Other devices", which include, Ethernet Controller, Multimedia audio controller
PCI simple communication controller, SM bus controller, and Video controller (VGA compatible), was all in a yellow question mark.

So me, being the noob to this sorta stuff as for any and all assistance. Why am i not able to connect to the internet and such? I have all the cds which came with the computer. I tried to run the 32 bit dell diagnostics thing but it stopped in the middle and gave me this message

    "system error!
msg: system_error. this system is not recognized as a supported Dell PC. These diagnostics may not run on unsupported systems.

Wow! You have a lot going on. First of all you're running XP. I don't think that Microsoft is supporting XP any longer, which puts you at a very high risk. I'm not sure which version of Internet Explorer you have. No you do not need Secunia. Secunia is a software that checks programs for up dates. It's a good program, but IMHO it is not needed. If you up date Java, be sure you uncheck the Ask tool bar!!

    Hi all

I had a bad stick of RAM causing BSOD's on my Dell Dimension 8400. (8MZQT51) I removed the offending componant and the computer is working fine now. Since I have to replace it, I figured I would upgrade at the same time. It had 1GB DDR2 RAM, in the form of 2 sticks of 512 mb, 533mHz PC2 4200, 240 pin memory. The motherboard has 4 dimm slots, it has a 3.0 g pentium 4 processor, and running a 32 bit system. Based on my research, I should be able to upgrade to 4GB max RAM, based on what I read on Dell's site for my computer.

Here is my question...will any 4 sticks of the same style 1GB, 240 pin RAM work, or do I need to concern myself with things like mHz, etc?

Right now I'm repairing a friend's Dell Dimension 2400 computer with a XP installation disc with service pack1a. Since her computer is old, she had SDRAM DDR PC2100 with 256 MB, and a old hard drive with over 1,000 KB of storage space.

At first, I tried the XP reinstallation disc, the blue screen appeared and at the bottom everything loaded until the words "Windows XP is starting up". This stayed on the screen without ever changing. I cannot use Last Known Good Configuration, or any of the safe modes.

When I installed the diagnostic disk, there was hard drive problems. So, I installed a new hard drive with 250gb of storage and the same problem occurred. So I installed windows with the new hard drive on another system and it worked. However, I accidentally installed Windows twice to the hard drive. The first xp installation windows worked, while the second had a blue screen error. I know I can easily delete the second one. I'm just mentioning this just in case this can cause another problem.

So, when I installed the drive backed into my friend's system, I still cannot boot. For this entire problem, the only thing that will stay is the black windows XP loading screen. I even installed some new 1 1gb PC2700 SDRAM DDR ram and the problem is still there. I ran another diagnostic and everything appears to be fine.
