I moved the My Documents location over to my secondary hard drive, then, I formatted and reloaded XP onto my primary hard drive. Now, I can't access the my documents folder on the secondary hard drive because it is locked to the original account. There's has to be a way to get into this folder, I have a lot of stuff in it that I really need. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:locked out of my documents

I figured it out. I booted up in safe mode, brought up the properties for the my documents folder, after digging around in there, i was able to take control of it. if somebody needs better directions, just reply to this thread and i'll give a step-by-step.

Hi everyone,

I'm running a XP Home Edition SP2 system with all possible upgrades.
Some time ago, i've had a system disc c: and "my documents" folder on an other drive, f: "My documents" folder was locked for other users, only me from my password locked profile, could get in.
A problem occurred and i had to format my system drive c:, but unfortunately i forgot to unlock "my documents" folder.
After reinstalling my system i could'nt get inside that folder! System shows it is empty, but when i check how many disc space is avaible it seems that all of the data is still in place. Also, after reinstall "my documents" drive letter changed from f: to e:

How can i unlock that folder and get back my data?

Hi everyone!

I have done something stupid and I have no idea how to reverse it.
I have locked myself out of My Documents on Win XP by having an attempt at renaming My Documents - (which I found out is harder than it looks) from Jane & Peters Documents to something less close to home.
I entered Windows in Safe Mode by pressing F8 I think, then I attempted to alter what permissions the Jane and Peters Docs had, then I think I fiddled with the Admins setting, then I got a message that I was about to lock every user out of My Docs....but...I was a tad stupid and did it anyway.
I can't remember what I did or deleted as I was just mucking around without really knowing what I was doing...doh!
There are HEAPS of valuable work related stuff in there as well as the usual cataloge of family pics etc so I really want to get back into it.
Oh and I forgot that when I log in as Admin (well that's the only choice I have now...) I still can't see or access My Docs???

The error message is -
C/Documents and Settings/Peter&Jane/My Documents is not accessible
Access is denied

I really hope someone can the way I am not very proficent at this stuff...obviously.

I had the trial version of Microsoft Office 2003 and used Word for many documents. Now that my trial has run out I cannot edit any of the documents I created with Word. It says " This modification is not allowed because the document is locked." I know I did not lock them. Also I tried to copy and paste but that is locked too. So is it possible to edit these documents if I choose not to activate Word? Thank you!

Right, I started a new word document this morning (WORD 2003), which worked fine and I printed out the letter I had written. Since then however if I go into previous documents, everytime I go to write anything it says "This modification is not allowed because the document is locked" Even if I go and start a new document it won't let me do anything!

Why's that then??

I've recently installed winXP on my new sata hard drive and everything is going swimmingly. Today I added the hard drive from my old computer to copy some files over before formatting it. The drive installed fine and the system booted just as it should. Once I got in to windows I could access the second drive just as I should be able to, all apart from the user profile folder in my documents. By this I mean when you look in the documents and settings folder and you have folders called Administrator, All Users and Application Data, then you have one for each user profile on the system, and it's that user profile folder it won't let me access. When I try and open it it just says access denied.

Please help me get in there as it's full of loads of work and music I need, plus a few pictures of ex girlfriends in their underwear.

You must have gone the upgrade route I take it?

Try download SurF File Manager. It will get you into most locked folders.

I have Windows 7. Using Windows Explore, under my C drive, 'Documents and Settings' and '$Recycle.Bin' have lock symbols on top of their icons. Under my name several folders have blue arrows pointing up and to the right on top of the file icons, such as Application Data, Cookies, Local Settings, My Documents and a few other folders. When clicking all these folders except the recycle bin an error message says 'Location is not available, <folder> is not accessible, Access is denied'. I am the only user of the computer. I have always saved my data to my D drive and this data is available. I am not allowed to adjust 'sharing' or 'permissions' on these folders. I was not allowed to run the SysInfo utility. My user account is set to administrator but it doesn't seem to be working that way.

What's going on here?

Hey Folks,

A few days ago I picked up a particularly nasty trojan that began running ads in my desktop background - Just audio, but still annoying. I tried removing it using Malwarebytes and Spybot. Oddly enough, since then, I've had further problems. One is the browser redirects randomly to spam sites but the bigger one is I cannot access my documents (music, video etc...) or certain folders in c:\.

For example, I have a folder on the c:\ drive called work. When I click on work, it comes up as totally empty - no files. When I right click it, however, I find there are 193 files at 3 gb. My document folders have also disappeared. When I go to windows / user I find by right clicking that there are hundreds of files at 40 or so gb but I cannot find any of them by searching or exploring. I have made sure all folders are on general view (ie: not just music / video etc) but this does nothing. I now just want to back up my files and blitz the PC with a full reinstall.

Can anyone help me ? I should also note I removed IE by turning off windows features as the trojan kept attacking IE scripts. Not sure if this matters but I'd be grateful if anyone could help me...

A:Files and documents locked ?

The trouble is, you can remove some malware, but that does not automatically repair the damage it does. If it has changed system files and stuff like that, then your only sensible option is to reinstall Windows.

Also, it can be extremely difficult to find and remove some malware.

If you run a backup, then make sure to check that for malware, as well as all drives and partitions.

Unless there is some reason why you absolutely have to troubleshoot this damaged system, then I would go for a new install.

A:Solved: Word 7 Documents Locked

It could be because you have not activated your Microsoft Office software.

Or because you have an expired trial version of Office (which Word is part of).
Trial versions of Office come pre-installed when the PC is new. It's not built-in to Windows, so you only get a trial version of it.
When the trial period expires, editing or creating new Office documents with it is blocked.
What happens if you start Word and click on Help >> Activate Product?

If you are already activated, a dialog box saying so
will appear. If you are not activated, the Activation Wizard will
start. If you have an expired trial version, a dialog box will prompt
you to enter a valid product key or purchase a key online."

The problem is that her saved word documents lock and she can't edit them or do anything to them. The menu bar is still accessible, but the help section was no help. We tried right clicking on the document but that didn't work either. This is sort of a big problem because she obviously has lots of homework assignments that she now can't get to, email to herself, or do anything with.

"Object is locked skipped", "Error Opening - (File locked)", "Not tested", "Access Denied", "Some files could not be scanned", "Password Protected" or "Encrypted" notations in an anti-virus/anti-malware scan are not uncommon. Some files and services are locked by the operating system or running programs during use for protection, so scanners cannot access them. Other legitimate files, especially those used by security programs, may be obfuscated, encrypted or password protected in order to conceal itself so they do not allow access as a protective measure. When the scanner finds such an object, it makes a note and then just skips to the next one. That explains why it may show with such notations but no action taken in certain anti-virus or anti-malware log scan reports. These are normal when using many security scanning programs so there is seldom a need for concern.NOD32 FAQ: files with "error opening - (File locked) %5B4%5D" what does this mean?BullGuard: What are skipped files? I downloaded a password protection program called Folder Access. It was causing lots of issues so I decided to uninstall it. But when I did, since I had “My Documents” folder password protected, the whole folder was locked for some reason. Now, the "My documents" folder has a control panel icon on it and displays the control panel when I attempt to open it. The folder properties under the control panel icon still show that the folder size is 20GB and has about 500 folders and 5000 files (which is about right for my documents), but it is just an ordinary "folder" and not a "File folder". Also, the folder has "21ec2020-3aea-1069-a2dd-08002b30309d" next to it (I believe this is the GUID for the control panel). So all my data is still there but somehow is hidden under a second control panel link. The system created another “My Documents” which is pretty much empty. Can someone please help me make this folder accessible to me again or give me any ideas to change registries or find the lost files?

A:My Documents folder locked/hidden under Control Panel

Personally, I would try reinstalling the program Folder Access and using the original password used to password protect the My Documents folder to unencrypt the folder.

After that I would uninstall the program.

I am Arun Kumar Kushwaha and I have discovered one Big Loophole/Security Leak in Microsoft's Windows 7 Operating System worldwide.
through which we can Access/Delete/Copy/Replace Important Data without Cracking/Resetting the Login Password in Windows 7 OS
and for this we not need any 3rd party Software/ CD/ DVD/ Pen drive/ CMD/ Script/ or any other means of hacking Devices/tool.

only through Windows 7 OS we can Access anybodies Computer Around the world, and user will never get to know that his/her computer has accessed by someone else.
This is purely Microsoft's Negligence towards user's Around the world.

U can assume how much serious is this Issue, if anybody can steal confidential Important data of Company/ Govt data/ or any other Sensitive Personal data of anyone who are using windows 7 OS.

I have Talked through telephone to MS India regarding this Issue and they told me that there is no loophole in their OS and can't be accessed by anyone without having Login Password or User need to Reset login Password with tool/software available.

also i have mailed to MS Technical support Team and also asked about this issue on Windows worldwide official support forum, but not get any meaning full response from them.

I am asking this message to here, coz i want to Spread this issue around the world, so every user can secure their Data and also MS can rectify this issue by releasing an OS Update.

I've experienced this problem twice in the past week. Here is my current problem:

New Windows 8 computer
Moved Office 2010 install from old computer to new computer
Copied all documents to new computer by installing the old drive in the new computer (NTFS to NTFS)

When trying to open any DOC, DOCX, XLS, XLSX, PPT, or PPTX files that are stored in the Documents folder I get permission errors. Word will open an RTF file just fine. If I try to use any Office programs to save a file to the Documents folder, I also get permission errors. I can move the file to the Desktop and work with it just fine. I can then move it back to the Documents folder.

Excel - 'C:\Users\xxxxxx\Documents\Book1.xlsx' could not be found

I tried copying the files two different ways to eliminate any lingering NTFS permissions. I used a linux box to copy from the old drive to EXT4, then to a linux formatted FAT drive. Using windows explorer to do all of this...

Not realizing how this file system works, she deleted all files in Documents because many dupe files made it look like they were accidentally copied there multi times. On realizing what she had done, I promptly restored the recycle bin, hoping everything would return to normal, but all files went into the My Documents folder while the Documents folder ended up with a bunch of (mostly) empty folders originally from My Documents.

Normally, all you see in the Documents folder are documents, but in My Documents there may be sub-folders as well as files. After the gyrations, there were folders in the right pane of explorer under Documents, and only files in the right pane under My Documents, as if Documents and My Documents got swapped around. To make it more confusing, rt clk on My Documents, properties showed the number of files plus 66 folders! But no folders show up in either explorer pane.

I copied everything from the two folders to another folder for safety, then tried restoring the two folders. The result was to have only files in My Documents and folders in Documents as before, so, no help. No backups either. oye!

Any help will be gratefully accepted. tom

Hi all,

I've built another new PC, but for the first time I've installed a SSD to hold Win7 while all my data (in theory) will be held on my data drive (2 TB Hard Disk).

I've redirected most of my user folders just fine, "My Documents", My Music, Downloads etc. however when I installed my first game on this system, it's placing its saved games into "Documents"; note: NOT "My Documents".

Of course all my google searches throw back results for redirecting "My Documents" which is already done...

So is the "Documents" folder stuck in my user folder permanantly? Over the course of a year I don't doubt it will get very bloated with saved games, screenshots etc. so I really don't want it on my SSD drive and want to nip this problem in the bud if possible.

Basically is this possible to "fix" without relocating the entire "Users" folder?
p.s. Out of interest, I tried creating a "Documents" folder on my F: drive (my data disk) and it said that it already existed as "MY Documents"...Annoying

It sounds to me as though the administrator has made that directory path private. Are you the admin, and if so, are you logged into a user account with admin rights? If all else fails, reboot and log into the Administrator account and go to the control panel/users and change your preferred account status. While you're there, unlock the problem path to allow all users to view.

Ok, I need some help..

I know that the documents library is a "library" and when I save anything there it really saves the file to the default location(my documents).

I teach a basic PC course usage course to seniors and some of the PCs are now listing the "My Documents" and the "Public" folders above their respective files when they click on "documents". In the past all the files have been there but never a separation by folder in the listing. There are 8 computers in the LAb and 4 show the "my Documents" and Public location in the listing....

How can I get this back to where they only see the whole list of files without the folder separation in the listing...

Thanks for any help, this is confusing them...

Hello John, and welcome to Seven Forums.

It sounds like the default Arrange by, Sort by, or Group by folder view of the "Documents" library has been changed. You might see if doing what's in the yellow TIP box at the top of the tutorial below to click on Clear changes in the "Arrange by" (on toolbar) drop down menu may help.

File and Folder Arrangement - Group by - Sort by - Arrange by

Hope this helps,

I looked but couldn't find this issue elsewhere. I noticed that when I opened my files, there were extra MY DOCUMENTS folders. Other people who used this computer apparently messed around and copied MY DOCUMENTS folders. I tried to remedy the mess, but did so when I was tired, and seem to have made matters worse. Now, when I go to the Start Menu> Documents the documents are not there.

I am at a loss as to how to fix this. Can anyone help?

I am running Windows 7 on my notebook, as the owner and admin.....
I try to access this folder, and I fact it appears as a shortcut rather than a folder...i have run antivirus, and malware, found nothing....
tried to change the security....all users has rights to it, the admin does not and cannot be changed....any ideas?

A:C:\Documents and Settings\all users\documents DENIED!!!

It looks like one of the junction points that provides some backwards compatibility and which shows when unhiding files in Control Panel>Folder Options>View. There is no Documents and Settings folder in Win7, except as a junction point.

Read more about junction points here:

In Win7 Documents is under All Users>[User Name]>Documents. Perhaps you should hide Hidden and System Files again to see only the WIn7 folders you need.

Hi there. I have a feeling that I'm going to feel really dumb when I realize how to do this... but I've been baffled and nothing online has quite worked or applied to my issue. Here goes:

I'm running Windows 7, and have a habit of using the recent documents separated by program on the start menu. In other words, I'll go to Start, highlight Microsoft Excel (as it's a program I use regularly and therefore stays pretty close to the top of the start menu), and mouse over to the right to see my recent Excel documents.

Early on in my Windows 7 use, I had right clicked on some recent files and selected "Remove from this list" and they vanished from the recent Excel document list. However, I can't get them to ever come back.

I've tried resetting my recent document settings under Start Menu properties, even deleting "recent application data" files according to other sites. If I navigate to the files through the folders, I can open spreadsheets and have them show up, but the ones I've removed from the list will not show up, and I don't understand why.

I'm more than willing to provide any additional information, but hopefully someone can tell me this is a rather simple solution.

I have four computers running ?identical? (obviously not) configurations of 32-bit Windows 7 Home Premium. All W7 updates are applied to each. I have all my dynamic data on a local network on a D-Link DNS-323 in a folder named My Documents.

Here?s the ?obviously not? problem. On one, I cannot install My Documents in the Library\Documents folder. If I click on Documents I get the message ?Documents is empty? ?No folders have been included in the library?. If I continue by clicking on ?Include a folder? and then select My Documents, I get a message ?This network location can?t be included because it is not indexed?.

Three computers included it without a hitch. This one refuses. Has anyone an idea of what is going on, or where to look?

I moved them back to My Documents and changed my settings back to the way I had them before. While surfing the internet a few minutes later, the system became unresponsive. I restarted the computer and logged in, but now I find that My Documents has completely disappeared. I can't even find my files in Documents and Settings. I had about 35 GB of music, so I hope I didn't just lose it all. Please help!

On my XP computer I had numerous files in the My Documents folder. Some questions.

1. I simply copied them to my new Vista computer. So in Vista's Documents folder there is a folder called My Documents with all of these subfolders. Is this okay?

2. I moved the items in My Pictures subfolder of My Documents to the Pictures Vista folder.

3. In the My Documents subfolder My Music there are numerous files including a large iTunes folder. In the Music folder of Vista there is already an iTunes folder that appears to be a copy of the one in the My Music folder. Should I delete the files in My Music?

4. As for all the other files in My Documents, should I leave them or move them so that they are subfolders under the Vista Documents folder and delete the My Documents folder that I imported from XP. Or does it matter?

A:My Documents in XP versus Documents in Vista

This is all a matter of personal preference.

1 - Yes, that's also how I do it at work.

2 - No problem there

3 - If you are unsure, it's never wise to delete them straight away (I don't think that there'll be a problem, but I'm not that good with iTunes). I'd suggest moving them to a Folder on your Desktop. That way, if anything goes wrong you'll know where they are. If, after a couple of weeks, things are still OK - then delete them to the Recycle Bin. That way you'll have even longer before they're permanently gone (but they will be gone eventually).

4 - I prefer to leave stuff where it is, but I've got lot's of space. You could move each file (to the Documents folder) as you use it - then, after a while, you'll know that the stuff left in My Documents isn't needed. Then you can either delete it, or save it to a CD/DVD in order to free up space.

I was redirected here.

I encountered an error that said C Drive was having trouble being read, and the Windows program shaped like a little puzzle piece launched, and found about 14 errors, some of which it could complete, and others which asked me to pay to fix. At this point, I figured it was a virus. Anyway, I restarted the computer, and upon starting it up all of my documents briefly appeared, then vanished.

I cannot access them through any directory. The computer is also running substantially slower at this moment.

Around the same time, an error popped up that read "Catalyst control contre host application has stopped working"

I tried a system restore, to no avail.

Is there a way to delete the My documents folder and have all the files located in just the Documents folder?

A:Documents AND My documents folders; Can I eliminate one?

Hello and welcome to the forums schodes!

As of Windows 7, the "Documents", "Pictures", "Music" and "Videos" folders appear displayed in Windows Explorer with a "My" prefix but are actually still stored in the file system without the prefix (as in Windows Vista).

So you don't have to do anything, no extra file is being duplicated, no space is wasted.

Hope that clarifies the situation!

My girlfriend logs on with her user name (Mary) at the XP Pro welcome screen. Hers is the only user name shown. In Control Panel/Windows Accounts she is listed as the only user.

In Windows Explorer (C:/Documents and Settings) there are four folders:

1. All Users
2. Config.msi (empty)
3. Default User
4. Ex-husband?s name (it used to be his computer, so somehow he is still around)

All the user data of my girlfriend is actually saved in folder four. Also:

a) At the top of the Windows Explorer tree the ?My Documents folder? points to Ex-husband?s ?My Documents? folder.

b) Later in the tree there is another folder called ?Mary?s Documents? which also points to Ex-husband?s ?My Documents? folder and contains the same files.

So my questions are:

1. Can I safely change folder four to my girlfriend's name? Should/can this be done in Windows Explorer, or somewhere else?

2. Can/should I delete the folder called ?Mary?s Documents? which simply reproduces the files in Ex-husband?s ?My Documents?.

3. Can I safely delete the folders ?All Users? and ?Default User?, which do not contain my girlfriend?s user data?

4. Can I safely delete the empty ?Config.msi? folder?

5. I would like to keep the ?My Documents? folder which shows at the top of the folder tree as it is convenient for my girlfriend to find.

I hope this makes sense. Any suggestions much appreciated.

A:'Documents and Settings' and 'My Documents' query

1) I wouldn't, but it can probably be's hard to redirect those stupid Windows links. You could create your own shortcut to "Mary's Documents", copy the contents of the ex-husband's folder to the Mary's documents, then you should be able to delete it.

2) For safety's sake I wouldn't, but you could give it a shot... (or do what I said above)

3)No, they are default folders that WIndows uses for some mysterious purposes.

4)Definitely not!

5)Go to to find a registry hack which will let you delete the My Documents folders. Then add the new shortcut above.

Remember, if you delete something you shouldn't have, you can restore it from the recycling bin!:grinthumb

If I go to Libraries\Documents\Property Files\1105 Dart, I can't see the file I need. However, I can see it if I go to

I have 156 files in "Documents" and 153 files in "My Documents". Any idea how to correct this? My documents may have gotten 'out of control' after I started using Bit Torrent Sync to sync the documents folder between my desktop and laptop.

Good afternoon,
I use exchange online a lot (OWA) and a few days ago Internet Explorer started defaulting to OneDrive Documents Folder instead of my local Documents folder. It was running fine before that. Not sure what changed. I have since changed
settings in OneDrive to save locally instead of on OneDrive and even disabled OneDrive completely. However, every time I try to add an attachment from Internet Explorer, it defaults to my OneDrive folder and not my local folder. Anyone know of a fix? Yes,
I know I could just use a different folder and copy from my Documents folder to the new folder, but there's obviously an issue that I would like to fix. Thank you all for your help.

Problem(s) - redirects in IE, locked windows logins, locked windows backgrounds - I assume this is all related.

History of actions to date:

Smitfraudfix appears to have corrected the ?RENOS? Trojan I had as I no longer get the pop ups and the background indicating I?m infected.

File ?WinHelpr.exe? was identified as having or being ? FAKEINIT Trojan. I renamed that file and Windows defender quarantined it.

What it is doing now that I decided to stop going it alone:

Safemode does not work - it shuts the PC down immediately.

Only one of the 4 logins works- 3 of them immediately log off.

For the 1 login that works I get to a point where the background picture is there - but no desktop icons or Taskbar at the bottom of the screen. CTRL_ALT_DEL does bring up Task Manger ? where I can force explorer to run via the ?FILE ? NEW TASK? pull down. Then the desktop icons and taskbar comes back. (Something had locked out TASK Manager before and SmitFraudfix corrected that)

I installed Malwarebytes ? had to rename it to winlogon to get it to actually run though.

SuperAntispyware.exe will not install ? I get an ?has encountered a problem and needs to close error?

Malwarebytes is currently running as I type this ? It?s been 14 minutes and only at 50000 files and it's found 9 objects. It?ll be a while before it is done.

Besides letting Malwarebytes do it?s thing and gettign it's log file ? what should I report back next with?

This is a minor but annoying issue. I suspect there is an easy answer. I just upgraded from Vista to Windows 7 (thank goodness) and transferred all my personal folders into the Documents library. For some reason, when clicking on Documents on the left of the screen, instead of the body saying Documents Library and then "Includes: 2 locations" as it should, with the folder under it, it says Documents Library and then lists My Documents with the folders under it. I have tried to deposit the folders directly into Documents but get the "target folder is the same" message. Change view just gives me the list versus icon choice. Can I fix this or do I need to live with it this way?

I am trying to clear out duplicate files in Windows 7. A scan by Duplicate Cleaner Free 3.2.1 shows copies in multiple locations, including User\Documents and User\My Documents. Since these are both showing up in this scan I presume they are actually two files, not one real file and one link - is this correct? If there aren't actually two separate files, I don't want to remove the real file. If they are actually two separate files, I would like to remove one of them, and want to know which one.

I may have confused things by restoring files from a backup program (not Windows Backup) to My Documents, being confused about the difference between User\Documents and User\My Documents, in addition to the Windows 7 "Library" called "Documents", which by the way points to "My Documents". Not to mention "Favorites". I removed the documents link from here as it is confusing enough without it - I think that was "Documents".

From other threads, I understand that My Documents is not an actual folder but a kind of library which points to the "Documents" folder. If this is the case, why does the scan show two documents? How can I be sure what's real and what isn't?

I have scanned several documents to edit and as I am a dummy, they and the messes I made of them are all in the 'My Documents' folder. When I try to delete them, I just get more copies of them. I have a folder full of hundreds of copies of files now and I don't know what to do. I can't figure it out. As my other computer is being worked on I am on this old one and it has, I think Word 97 on it. I have documents still showing when I open Word and this folder jam packed with copies. What do I do?
Help me, please! Thank you in advance.

A:Can't delete Word documents and they keep copying back to My Documents when I delete.

There are utilities that enable this, but unless it has been specifically installed it is not part of Windows.
How many buttons does the mouse have and which button are you using.
When you open My Documents - does it look like the screenshot.

If so, highlight the item with just one left click and then click on delete selected item in left pane. It is not showing on my screenshot but when you do select the item with one left click, then left pane will then include the choice Copy, Move and delete the selected item in separate lines., as well as other choices.

If you do not have this view of My Documents click the Tools tab, click folder options and on the general window click show common taks in folders and then click apply and OK.
The same procedure with delete can be obtained by clicking the File tab, top left and then clicking delete on there.

If you have a three button mouse post back and I will give you further guidance as to what may be the problem.

Make sure you are using left click on the procedure I have described, as right click on the item and then choosing delete may activate the auto move.

I have suddenly lost all of my files within My Documents. All the folders remain, but all of the actual files are missing.

No system changes have been made, nothing new was installed. I have run virus scans (I'm using SymantecAV Corporate) AdAware, Spybot S&D with nothing found.

They're still there somewhere, as the user folder properties show the correct size for the folder and number of documents, but not initially - right clicking on the folder to display properties shows a small number at first and then it gradually counts up. Properties for My Documents shows a small number of folders, all empty.

Hidden files have been turned off then on with no change. I've looked at the permissions and they seem correct, but I don't have a lot of experience there.

I don't know if this is related to a Windows Update, but I've searched and I can't see that anyone else has reported this.

A couple of weeks ago, I turned on my PC (windows 7) and found that My Documents had been renamed Documents. I always accessed this folder under my User (like My Music, My Videos, etc.). Before this happened, from the Library, I had Documents and under this, My Documents and Public Documents so no, I am not getting it confused with the Documents library. Now under the Documents library, I have Documents and Public Documents.

I didn't rename it. I liked having My Documents because I could always easily see where I was saving documents. Having the Documents library always confused me because when I first got this PC a couple of years ago, I accidentally saved into the Documents library (since My Document had just come back, I wasn't used to it) and from there, I could not find my files. I never stopped to figure this out - I just made sure I saved into My Documents from then on.

So, does anyone have any idea as to how this got renamed? Can I rename it back without repercussions?

I am not able to rename the "Documents" folder because I get the error that it is a system folder and cannot be renamed. Please help.

A:Unable To Rename "Documents" Folder To Original Name "Shared Documents"

You can change the share name over the network. My machine does the same thing.

When you click 'Share this Folder over the network' you are given the option to name the share. It will warn you that if it is over 12 chars, then older machines on the network may not be able to see it etc etc. Ok this and then check that the shared documents folder appears as such on the machine you wish to access with.

Bear in mind you folder will be showing in your 'Network Folders' as 'Documents on {computername} ({computername}). Can you not just point to this folder on the second machine instead?

Hello. I have been very curious for a while now and somewhat confused. This is regarding Windows 7, so if you are not using Windows 7 you may not know what I am talking about.

Okay, I see in Windows 7 you have a folder called "Documents" in your start menu and when you open it, you have the "Documents library". Inside there you have "2 locations" called "My Documents" and "Public Documents". When you go to: C:\Users\<username> you will see "My Documents". Some people cannot get past this part asking what is the difference between "Documents" and "My Documents" and how come I cannot see a folder called "Documents" on my system? But I need to know if I am right?

Please follow me here -- this is an assumption. I think, but I may be wrong, that: "Documents" is a *virtual* folder which actually is the same thing as the *virtual* "Documents library" (folder) that contains both two *real* folders called "My Documents" and "Public Documents". So if you were to look up on your system for a "Documents" folder, it does not exist. Only the "My Documents" and "Public Documents" are *real*. Basically substitute the "My" for your <username> and leave "public" as "public". Am I correct to say that?

However, I have another view and this is VERY CONFUSING and CONTRADICTORY in what I just sa... Read more

A:Confused Between The Difference - "My Documents" & "Documents"-Win7?

It is the same path. The folder view shows My Documents, but the actual physical location is c:/Users/<Name>/Documents

As for the other location. Libraries is just a way of organizing different folders into one view window. any other location that you want to store documents in, you can right click on the folder and go to "Include in Library" and select Documents and when you will then see those files listed in the Library>Documents

so the folders in the library are:
My Docs
Public Docs

Edit: also for clarification the Public Documents is the same way. This folder is for any documents you want anyone on your network (if you have a network set up) to see. It is named Public Documents but is located as C:\Users\Public\Documents

G'day Folks,

Should I move "Documents" or "My Documents" folder to D partition? When I click on start --> documents it opens "Documents" folder which has apps-data ...etc folders.I like to be able to click on "documents" to access my data from D,is this possible?

just bought a new Asus laptop and Windows-recover turned off on C: .

i)Is it because Asus has protected partiton (c set up?
ii)should I enable window's recovery on protected partition and set restore point?

Thanking you in advance for your knowledge and experties of Windows 7

Hello Online,

If you wanted to move your C:\Users\(user-name)\My Documents folder to another location, then OPTION TWO in the tutorial below can help show you how to easily do so. User Folders - Change Default Location
The Start Menu opens to the library location instead of the one in your C:\Users\(user-name) folder. If you would like to change that, then the tutorial below can help show you how to.Start Menu User Folder Buttons - Open to Users Instead of Libraries
Hope this helps,

I am trying to clean out unwanted files but ....
My "User" contains a folder "Documents" 4.16 GB, 2071 files, 123 folders.
My C drive contains a folder "My Documents" 1.15 GB, 387 files, 99 folders
The folders and files are different and not duplicated.

I think one of these folders may be a mistake.
Can they be combined without causing problems?

A:Solved: BOTH "Documents" and "My Documents" folders

I'm trying to install Flex Builder 2 onto a Vista x64 machine. The installation fails, but I found this solution on the internet:

The real problem is Vista?s use of the new directory junction point concept. Both the installer and the actual app for Flex Builder need to write into the user?s home directory My Documents folder. However, in Vista, My Documents isn?t a real directory. It is a junction point. Apparently Flex Builder (and Windows Explorer itself) cannot handle junction points. If you run the installer, it will say it finished with errors. If you check the log, sure enough it failed writing to the My Documents folder. I fixed the problem by deleting the My Documents junction point and creating a directory symbolic link to the real Documents folder. This Documents folder is where the My Documents junction point is supposed to be pointing to. Anyway, using:

mklink /d ?My Documents? Documents
from inside my home directory solved the problem

How do I go about doing this? Typing mklink /d ?My Documents? Documents gives me the following error: "The syntax of the command is incorrect"

I also have no idea how to delete a junction point.

A:Program install needs "My Documents", not "Documents"

Free Software to create/delete junction points in Vista
How to: mklink /d command to create symbolic link in Vista

Delete exisitng junction point for "My Documents", and create new symbolic link for "Documents"

Something has renamed "Shared Documents" on my XP SP2 system to "Documents".

I'm thinking it might have been a malware infestation I had about a month ago that blew out my ZoneAlarm settings also.

Hi wondering if you can help. My previously healthy PC is having a funny turn!

It started by not recognising a USB device, to refusing to shut down. Then the next boot it stuck on the black screen with the blue window. I forced a power down 3 times same thing happened each time.

I entered BIOS settings (I was looking for safe mode actually) changed from fast boot to normal boot. I also unpluggdd all USB devices except my mouse. And this time I got to the login screen.

Now 2 things, firstly the resolution is wrong it looks like safe mode all blown up and pixilated. Secondly it will not accept my password!

I've tried my 4 number pin, tried my microsoft account password. I can login on my phone to microsoft so the password is 100% correct. But the PC refuses to accept it.

I've got to the recovery page via shift/restart on the login page but for every action on there it requires you to login so I'm totally confused as to how I'm supposed to try and restore my PC?

It's a Zoostorm box upgraded from Windows 7 to 10 a few months ago. It previously ran very well. I ran malwarebytes a few days ago after the USB fail and slow start ups. It pulled up a Spigot PUP but other than that nothing.

One last thing, its also saying no network is connected even though the cable is in and lit up and the router is working fine.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

I see you have Ewido installed. Ewido has recently been purchased by Grisoft, makers of AVG Antivirus, and the program is now known as AVG Anti-Spyware. Ewido currently can still be updated to the newest definitions, but this support will likely not last forever. I recommend you uninstall Ewido, restart your system, then download and install AVG Anti-Spyware. Update it's definitions as directed below, and run a scan where I have it placed in this fix.

My computer wouldn't load this morning, it would start loading then the spinny thing would freeze. I got it started in safe mode and copied most of my files on to an external drive when I hit a wrong button and it went crazy with files. I had started it in safe mode from the command prompt so I knew it would restart in safe, I shut it off and restarted to get rid of filewindowpalooza but now it won't take my password and I don't think I can do anything at all. It is an HP Envy, I can dig to get to the back to get the model no if I have to but if you can tell by it coming with a 2 G hd and 10 g of RAM that would be much easier. It has windows 8.1. My account has admin privileges but I don't run as main admin. I think something came in with a torrent file, I never use public trackers but the one time I do for something specific it figures it would be something bad. Anything I can do besides replace the hd?
Edit: I got in, keyboard was malfunctioning. It's just been a perfect storm today. Ok, I ram AVG , my regular virus program and malware bytes won't start. I haven't seen anything to identify a virus and it could still be a hardware issue I guess. Not sure what to do next.
When I ran AVG it said "file locked. Not scanned. Is ok" on a lot of files, in many different areas.

Nothing seems to work. I've tried pressing F8 so I can sign in with safe mode but even this doesn't work. I only get the duplicate screen function.
Anyone with an idea on how I can sign in without losing my files kindly assist. Or any advice on what should be done.

Hi guys, nice site. This is my first post.

I'm locked out of 7 because I forgot my password. I've tried the disc repair feature, and a password recovery program that won't run. I cannot get past the login screen and I cannot get installation disc to run in order to try to re-install.
If I press F2 at boot up I need the password. If I press F8 I get a repair option that finally tells me that there's nothing wrong.
It would seem that I need to rip the hard drive out and get a new one. Windows 7 has invaded my space!!! LOL
BTW, this was an upgrade from Vista. A legal one I might add.

Hi and welcome.

You can do a clean install by booting to the DVD.

First though, I'd give this little utility a try. Try to blank the password instead of making a new one. Then just hit enter at login, for the password.

If it works, then create a new password once in Windows.

First of all let me say that this is totally my fault. Today my PC booted into a black screen with a blank cmd prompt, I have not changed any setting or messed around with files recently, the title of cmd prompt is:"C:\WINDOWS\system32\LogonUI.exe". It also says "Press ctrl+alt+del to unlock" and after doing so, I can't get in my PC forgot my password or something, let me say it like this I've used every password that I have ever used and no luck. I have a HP notebook. My head is throbbing please advise.  Thank you!!

Ced69 Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!Sorry, we're not allowed to tell you how to bypass the password ... but ... if you Google for Trinity Rescue Kit, you will be lead to a site where you can download an image file from which you can burn a CD. They might also have USB images -- don't know for sure. If you get a lot of results, then go to the MajorGeeks site -- that is trustworthy. Once you have this, you have a choice of media to create:1) If you can boot from CD, download and install ImgBurn and use the Write Image to Disk option to create a bootable CD.2) If you can boot from USB, download and install RUFUS and use the option to create a bootable USB stick from the ISO file. Once you have made the boot media, boot your PC and use the option to blank the password. After that, you should be able to login to the PC -- and then, set a new password.Good Luck

AMD Phenom X6 2.8ghz

10k 300gb hd
1TB internal
1gb Radeon HD 6800

I am using this Pc normally as a media center, from online live broadcasting to editing video and converting for broadcasting. I have been having infrequent lockups, especially when I have a few programs going, its not odd that I do. For example today I was broadcasting live on justin tv, and had adobe flash media encoder open, with a single chrome browser, text editor, folder open, and IMTOO DVD ripper and converter. And I was converting a video file.

Not sure when thelockup happened as I was on another PC, and when I switched over (using KVM) is when I found it locked up, and for about 5 seconds could see the pointer fading away. Nothing I can do but hit the reset switch, nothing else worked.

Anyways I downloaded the system dump collector program and have attached the file. Thanks

PS last night went without any problems even with the IMTOO program on and converting thru the night hours, so really not sure what it is, hopefully the files will speak up.

A:Locked up, and thats it

Same thing happened today, broadcasting on, and converting a video file, I switched to the other PC for a bit, then when I switched back saw it lock up. Going to reinstall W7 Pro (oem disk) tomorrow evening (had the 30 day version), so I am hoping it doesn't happen again.

You can try this...Open up a blank document. Go to Insert -> the dropdown arrow next to Object(in 2013 its in the Text section) -> Text from File. Then simply select your password-protected document and hit Insert. The only downside to this is that its formatting will most likely be a little messed up

I'm running Windows XP Media Center (SP3) and IE7. I have only one USER on my PC, with Admin. Privileges. Recent crashes of IE 7 - for unknown reasons - caused me to disable add-on's and then see if the problem continued. They did. So, I then attempted to access Internet options under the tools menu so I could delete old files, or even reset IE7 to defaults. When attempting to access these controls, I'm greeted with an access violation message informing me that I don't have access to these controls, and I need to contact my sys. admin. Well, he and I are both in trouble since we're one in the same and have no clue how to get around this restriction. I've checked my user account to ensure it does indeed have admin. privileges. I then attempted to access the internet options through the control panel, but XP simply locks-up when I do that. Evidently, something is working really hard to make sure I can't access those settings. Read on another forum that I may have inadvertantly caused problems with IE7 by installing XP SP3 "on top" of it. The article indicated IE7 should have been uninstalled prior to installing SP3, then reinstalled afterwards. Well, its too late to do that NOW. Thanks, Microsoft. Anyway, if any of you good folks have a possible solution to my problem, I'd really appreciate hearing it.

Thanks !

Hi CalicoSilver and welcome to TSF !

I closed your poll since it's in no way related to your issue. We have a political discussions forum for such things.

Start in safe mode (press F8 at startup) and log as "administrator" (leave the password field blank if you didn't set any for the default admin account), do you still get the access denied message there ?

The solution could be to uninstall SP3, uninstall IE7 and reinstall SP3 :
You cannot uninstall Internet Explorer 7 or Internet Explorer 8 Beta 1 after you install Windows XP Service Pack 3

Ok guys, heres my problem. I live 4 states away from my little brother, and his computer is in dire straights. When we boot it up, he gets a blank desktop, no icons, no taskbar, no start menu. If we attempt to access programs via task manager (ctrl alt del) then we get the "Task manager has been disabled by the administrator. I need to know where to start so we can begin taking care of this mess. We can get into safe mode, and task manager will let us in, but I'm lost after that step. I've had him run a couple of cracks that are supposed to fix the registry, but they dont help when we reboot into normal windows. Someone lend me a hand and let me know what we need to do.

So I was browsing around on the net when suddenly my internet stopped working. I went to go to control panel to see what was up. However the following message popped up, "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. you may not have the appropriate permissions". Turns out I couldn't gain access to windows explorer itself (not just a single file/directory). I booted in safe mode to try and trouble shoot it and checked my permissions for my account. It showed that I already had administrative privileges for the account. There is only one other guest account which was not enabled.

I tried opening windows explorer again in normal windows, yet the same message appears. It has also locked me out of my networking abilities.

In safe mode I have access to everything of course (I'm writing this message in safe mode) though I'm unsure of why an administrative account still gives me this error

Your help is very much appreciated

Thanks in advance!

A:Locked out?

While in the Safe mode make a NEW Administrative account, do NOT add a password.
Log out, and log into this new account, do NOT Switch user.
Once the new account is up and working in the safe mode, check a few things, then reboot and login using the new account.

If the new account works as it should, then you can start copying files from the old account to the new one.

I have an older Dell Inspiron 3800 laptop with XP Pro. It was operating pretty well but I ran system restore to a date about 10 days ago to clear up a small problem. When the system rebooted to the xp login screen it would no longer take my password. I tried booting into safe mode with the same results. It lists Administrator as the username just like before. I went into the bios and it said all of the passwords are disabled. A repair shop said there is a hidden OS password that is not located in the bios. We've been working on this for 2 days trying to find a reset. Any suggestions would be welcomed. This apparently is pretty technical.
