Solved: Plug & Play Configuration Error

Q: Solved: Plug & Play Configuration Error

Hello all,

I was wondering if there was any way to solve the Dell Plug & Play Configuration Error on startup. I've read that it has to do with the IRQ, the CMOS battery or maybe even a bad motherboard.

I've got a monitor/color problem. It's tinted green and it's dull. Could this be a symptom?

I'm pretty tech savvy but I don't know much about editing the BIOS.

Does anyone know if this can be fixed? I'm going to reformat the HD anyways. Do you think that will help?

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

i've had a heck of a time getting my PC to work properly since i accidently loosened my PCI tray when trying to install a new video card. because of that, my original modem quit working. i've since finally got the video card working and my other modem working by juggling PCI slots and re-installing drivers.

but now every time i start my PC, i get a nagging "plug and play configuration error" that won't let me get into windows until i push f1 or f2. i tried f2 once, but couldn't make heads or tails of the technobabble.

today i tried removing the onboard video card from my system, but now my PC is trying to reinstall it! no means no! aside from that, i'm still getting the erros.

where and how do i fix these errors, and make my PC quit trying to reinstall hardware i don't want it to use? as far as i'm concerned, when i shut something off, my PC should OBEY and not argue with me.

i searched all over to find where i could turn that darned card off as win 98 won't let me remove it in control panel>display (which should LOOK like a control panel and not a toolbox which is why i can never remember what it's called) which also has a second driver for my new video card as i made the mistake of installing the driver before the card the 1st time. maybe THAT is the error, but i can't find anyplace to remove video drivers like i could for modems.

by the way, why won't win 98 let me send a shortcut for my control panel... Read more

I posted this in "Hardware", which might be the wrong place, so here it is:

I resurrected a Dell 8200 and it was working fine until I tried to connect a ViewSonic 23" monitor. Suddenly I got the "plug and play configuration error, strike f1 or f2, etc." Can't make heads or tails out of it so I powered off then back on then hit f12 when the Dell logo came up. I am now at the DOS prompt as I'm sure something can be done from here. Anybody have a recipe I can follow to get this thing booted up? I really need this old machine to work as it is the only computer I have that will talk to my Konica Minolta color laser printer, but that's the subject for another thread.

I cannot download TSG SysInfo on a computer that won't boot.

I'm hoping that I just misunderstood what you typed and you weren't connecting the monitor while the PC was powered ON. If not, lesson learned. Aside from Plug and Play hardware, don't connect/disconnect anything while the PC is powered ON.

With that said, try manually clearing the CMOS. If you need step by step instructions, they should be available on the Dell website.

I have a Dell 8250 running XP. I haven't installed anything on my computer lately; however, when I started the computer this morning, I got 3 plug & play configuration error lines followed by the f1 or F12 option.

When I go into my device manager, both the NVIDIA Geforce 4 MX420 display adaptor and the VIA OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller say they cant find enough resources and are giving a code 12 error. Can anyone help me get this straightened out? Liike I said, this started out of the blue, without me installing anything new.

Thanks!

have a HP a1710n running windows vista home premium. Occasionally the computer will act like I am plugging in a removable device (with the low-high 2 tone sound indicator) and then unplugging it (again, with the high-low 2 tone sound indication).

I have unplugged all of my USB devices, and only my monitor, keyboard, mouse, and audio system (which does not use USB) are still plugged in. none of these items flicker as though they were being unplugged. I have noticed that the *remove hardware safely* indicator will appear on the quick bar, and when i attempt to see what is being ''plugged in'' it looks like a USB mass storage device, but no such device is currently plugged in. The device page shows its plugged into port_#0008, hub_#0002, which i have NO idea what that means...

This is only a minor annoyance during normal use, but when I am running resource heavy software such as digital editing or games, the frequency of the error increases, and it will cause whatever I am doing to stutter. This not only is very annoying causing hiccups in sound and video pieces i'm creating, but most dreaded of all it is causing lag while playing online games.

This is literally driving me up a wall, and has cost me a keyboard and a decent lamp. Has anyone run into this before?

Only thing i could think of.. is often the USB ports on the front of a case, or items like that, are sometimes installed as a HUB not as a direct port.. so maybe there is a loose connection on its attachment to the motherboard that it is failing there.

Hi,

Welcome To TSF.

This is from Microsoft

The driver for this device might be corrupted, or your system may be running low on memory or other resources. (Code 3)

Recommended resolution

If the driver is corrupted, uninstall the driver and scan for new hardware to install the driver again. To scan for new hardware, click the Action menu in Device Manager, and then select Scan for hardware changes.

If the computer has insufficient memory to run the device, you can close some applications to make memory available. To check memory and system resources, right click My Computer, click Properties, click the Advanced tab, and then click Settings in Performance field.

You may have to install additional random access memory (RAM). On the General Properties tab of the device, click Troubleshoot to start the Troubleshooting Wizard.

You should also re-install the sound driver, but do not install drivers that are not for your sound card. If you tell us what make the sound card is or do an EVEREST test and give us the results we can help you further.

I have a dell dimension 8100. It was working fine until I decided to use it as a host to install xp on a spare but used 80 gig hd. I have done this many times using any dell to write to the hd. In this case The install process got up to the pont where I make various choices. During one of its restarts to display the next screen I got 2 error messages, fan not detected, which is true, and plug and play error. At this point the "PRESS F1 to continue, or F2 to enter setup" is supposed to appear. In this case the screen got STUCK on the error, I tried another copy of the cd. Same result. I reconnected the first hdd only to get the same error. The diagnostic lights are GREEN,GREEN,GREEN,YELLOW. No usable info in the manual. What is the fix? This tower was very stable. I do not want to lose it. I do not understand this error. The spare hdd is probably good. [email protected]

I have an older Dell pentium 133 that works perfect except for one thing, every time it boots up I get a plug and play configuration error. I can hit F1 to continue or F2 to enter setup. I have no cards in any ISA slots. the only card in it is a PCI modem, everything else is onboard. I have gone to "device manager" and the only component that it shows to be PNP is the sound card. I have removed it in device manager but Windows reloads it on boot as Sound Blaster 16 PNP. I have no conflicts in any resources and there is no place in CMOS setup that refers to plug and play devices. If anyone could help I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks pandg60

This started happening exactly on January 11th, 2014. I should have asked for help earlier, I know, but it hasn't gotten this bad until now. When it first happened, it gave the "Windows must now restart because the DCOM Server Process/Plug and Play terminated unexpectedly" or something along the lines of that every 5 minutes or so, and forcibly restarted my computer. After installing MBAM and running a few quick scans, I cleared all the threats that came up, and the Plug and Play error ceased to exist. However, the DCOM error still popped up every 1-4 hrs (it was very random, and rudely interrupted me in the middle of writing an essay or something.) After a few months, a new error popped up saying "Windows will now restart in 1 minute." It basically had the same effect as the DCOM error. Just today, it has started popping up 5-10 min after boot, and has been VERY annoying. I downloaded Kaspersky's TDSSKiller and scanned my computer, and a suspicious file came up saying "Dcomlaunch". After finding the file location, it was rpcss.dll from the Windows/System32 folder. The only thing I can infer from this is the dll must be corrupted or infected. I don't know what to do with this.  Please help me fix my computer ASAP!

A client kept getting error messages that she was missing multiple system files. I reinstalled Windows XP. (I did not format as she had too much on her hard drive that she didn't want to lose.) She also had some spyware, etc. which I cleaned up.

Since then - whenever she reboots she gets an error message before it boots up to Window that there is a Plug and Play Configuration Error and to hit F1 to continue.

In Device Manager there is nothing with any exclamation points. I tried uninstalling some of the Plug and Play and letting the computer detect but that didn't work.

Any suggestions?

Hello Melbourne,

Everything MpKsl with 8 random letters and numbers following it belongs to Microsoft Security Essentials.

The beep you are referring to belongs to the BIOS which is capable of giving out differing Beeps to indicate if your hardware is ok or not. 1 beep being for ok

Have a look here I am guessing you have an AMI BIOS; Computer POST and beep codes

alright well now this is a problem im used to fixing but there is some major problems i cant seem to fix. first i was rather stupid and installed a new op on a OEM dell dimension 8200 desktop. i reinstalled all the drivers and there was no errors running just fine. then almost a month ago i tried to raid a hard drive but the hard drive seemed dammaged and would not partitsion. so i removed it and put back in my older one that im curently using, but it would not boot so i went through the basic steps ive fixed these types of problems all the time but almost nothing worked until i performed a IDE configuration check then it found the hard drive and was able to boot.
but then when i got it to boot all of my system drivers were uninstalled, such as system board and sound card and graphics card along with the intel chipset. i managed to reinstall most of the drivers such as the system board and sound card and of cource graphics card. then i reinsalled my plug n play for my moniter and it works fine. so the comps running fine except that is tells me found new hardware to reinstall (PCI Imput device/Multamedia sound card) these devices. but thats my sound card and graphics card port but there both running so i have no bloody idea how to fix it ive tried every thing i know.

Hi,

My computer keeps restarting. Immediately after logging into windows I get the message "windows must now restart because the plug and play service terminated".

This morning I switched on my computer from a hibernated state. It was extremely sluggish, then I had the usual message saying windows had completed downloading updates and that my computer would now restart. Upon restarting it got to the screen where it says "Windows is configuring, do not turn off computer". But it got stuck on this screen for half an hour so I switched it off. Upon restarting it seemed to work fine, went through the windows updates, got to 3 of 3, and I continued to log on. Then I got the "windows must now restart because the plug and play service terminated" message.

I had an external hard drive plugged in during this time. But took it out thinking it might be part of the problem. Now, when I try to plug it back in windows freezes in what ever its doing, leading to believe that it may be a problem with the communication between windows and the external hard drive. I have plugged the external hard drive into a different laptop (this one) and it works fine.

Please note that I do not have time to do anything (no time to switch on antivirus software etc) before the message comes up and my computer restarts. Im not sure whether this is a virus or a genuine problem with the computer.

Any help is very much appreciated,

Thanks, Andy

I had an external hard drive plugged in during this time. But took it out thinking it might be part of the problem. Now, when I try to plug it back in windows freezes in what ever its doing, leading to believe that it may be a problem with the communication between windows and the external hard drive. I have plugged the external hard drive into a different laptop (this one) and it works fine.

Please note that I do not have time to do anything (no time to switch on antivirus software etc) before the message comes up and my computer restarts. Im not sure whether this is a virus or a genuine problem with the computer.

EDIT: I just tried doing a system restore, which failed. Then I tried running in sa... Read more

I've got an exclamation mark over my Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator under System Devices in my Device Manager. It almost seems as if it appeared overnight, for no reason.

I can't seem to re-install/update it. I don't want to remove it and reboot, since I've read elsewhere you will have a tough time getting it back. What gives here? Is it corrupt? How do I get it back into working order? Thanks for any help.

As the title says, I am getting Plug and Play/DCOM error, forces restart. Also I was having random ads pop up but I believe they are being blocked by my adblocker.
At first I was not sure if it was an infection or a corrupt file or maybe miscommunication between my two SSDs.  After looking into it, from other peoples same issue, it looks to be an infection. I am running windows 7.
It seems to happen at random times, sometimes 20 minutes after log on sometimes 4 hours.
I checked other posts to see the same problem, it appears that the solution varies per case, so I figured I should post.
I have Malwarebytes installed, I have used it for a long time now but it shows nothing as far as an infection goes, I have also tried the tdsskiller as it was recommended in other threads but that also yielded no results.
I have a few things going on here but I did my best to make sure my post is to the terms. If I need to add anything else, let me know. Thanks in advance.
I should mention that as of recently, passed few days its only the DCOM error and not the plug and play one, it all started tuesday and the dcom only started maybe around friday.

1. Check the registry key:

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\%ServiceName%\Parameters

2. Check the associated DLL file name value for ServiceDLL.

3. Physically check the location mentioned in the key ServiceDLL and make sure that the file is there.

4. If you do not find the file at the location mentioned in the key HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\%ServiceName%\Parameters\serviceDLL then copy the file from a working Server with the same OS and Service Pack Level.

5. Now try to start the service and the service should now

Does the .dll exist in the \system32 directory ? If not, get a copy and put it there and see what happens.

A:BSOD on boot - Plug and Play detected an error

Remove any USB external drives attached when booting or power them off.

USB devices attached (other than mouse or keyboard) have been known to interfere with XP boot process, as XP recognizes that something is there but cannot account for it because the USB drivers are not yet installed (that's how I think of it).

Same thing can happen with flash drives and card readers, I think.

Once booting is complete, then power the devices on.

My computer keeps giving me an error message that the scanner is not plugged in when I try to scan something (USB). So I unplug it and plug it right back into the same port and it works like normal. Then I'll go to do another scan not one minute later and it give me the same error message. Un-plug and re-plug and it's fine again. Then the error message... you get the idea. I have another USB port and that does the same thing.

Any ideas? Thanks!

Hi Guys

this problem, which is actually a three part problem, has been bothering me for quite some time and I haven't been able to google myself to the solution. So now i am reaching out to you geniouses to, hopefully, help me find a solution.

Here goes ,ahem, I am running Vista Home Basic on my laptop.
For some reason Plug and Play on the computer does not work and never has :(. It is possible to run USB-devices on my computer if i manually find the drivers every time, but I do not always have internet access or time to look for the drivers. So it has really become a problem for me. Someone said to me that if i just get SP1 for vista, this should fix the problem.
But then realized that Windows Automatic Update was enabled on my computer and thought that SP1, must already be on my computer. Or No?
The third part of the question is; due to the fact that i could not find anything indicating wether i had SP1 installed or not - how do i check this?

My main focus and the real problem is getting these simple USB sticks to work without windows having to search for the driver, which it never finds.
We are talking things like usb-mouses, printers, storages. Basic stuff like that.

Any help would be much apreciated

A:[SOLVED] My plug and play does not work :(

whenever I start up my computer(win 98se), I get a message that a multimedia audio device is trying to install. the problem is my sound card is already installed and whenever I try to install the device it can't find the drivers. I delete the device but it still tries to install every time I boot up. If I hit cancel it doesn't show on the device manager. I have to idea how to keep this from trying to install. any idea how to stop this or find out what is the device it's trying to install?

A:Solved: Plug n Play problem?

what's the name of the audio card on the computer and what's the name of the audio device that windows wants to install everytime?
Did you try disabling the device instead?
go into device manager and under the properties of that device, disable it. That should shut windows up. If not maybe we can find the driver it needs.

So currently I have my PC connected to the printer with a USB cable and my 10 year old printer works just fine. I'm turning my desktop into a wireless desktop for the time being and going to install a WiFi pci card in the tower. Once I get my computer connected online wireless. So if I take the printer USB cable from the back of the PC tower and plug it into the back of the router will the printer work right away or do I have to setup the printer within the routers 192.... page ? or will I have to install any extra router software programs on the PC to get the printer to work ? I'm just wondering what my steps will be.

A:So if I plug my printer to my router will it be plug&play ?

It really depends on your router. Some routers do have that functionality and are "smart" enough to realize what to do with a printer attached via USB ports. Some may require you to configure it on the router's setup, and others may not let you network your printer at all that way. You should probably count yourself lucky if your router does it at all... my router has USB ports, but they're basically only good for charging a phone... they planned a firmware update to do more with them, but it never came through.

The most foolproof way to network a printer is to get a model with an Ethernet port or a Wi-Fi card built into the printer that's just designed for networking. Any computer on the network will then "see" the printer and be able to install drivers for it without the router having to be smart. Failing that, you might have to plug the printer's USB cable into a computer of some kind... but the catch is, it doesn't have to be very powerful or large. A $5 Pi Zero or a $30 "print server" off Newegg would do the job. Basically, any old computer lying around with USB ports could most likely work as a print server if it can be configured with CUPS and the appropriate version of Samba.

I am unable to install my hp officejet 5510 all-in-one.

The problem occurs shortly after the installation procedure tells me to connect the USB cable and power on the printer. The Found New Hardware Wizard gives this message: “The hardware wasn’t installed because the wizard cannot find the necessary software.” I can continue on with the installation, but the result is a failed installation.

I have ran the install using both the original installation disk and with the web release software from the hp site. Same thing happens either way. (I have done a complete uninstall between successive install attempts.)

Note that I have tried to install the printer on TWO different PC’s, both running Windows XP (with SP2 and current updates) and have had the same problem. This might suggest that the problem is the officejet itself, but there is other evidence that suggests otherwise:

I am able to use the copy function of the all-in-one and I am able to print a test page.

More significantly, I was able to get the scanner working (with limited functionality) by doing a non-standard installation. I chose “I will choose the driver.” This gave me a list of devices. I chose “Imaging Devices.” I then chose an hp model number very close to mine (5500 instead of 5510). I got an error message (a different one than before), but in the end my all-in-one did show up in the Control Panel under Scanners And Cameras and I successfully scanned a document. But my all-in-one was NOT listed unde... Read more

A:Solved: i NEED a PLUG-N-PLAY PRINTER install expert

Looks like you have installed the microsoft driver version first instead of using the cd that came with the printer.
Do a complete uninstall of the printer:
- Go to add/remove programs and uninstall the printer if it's in the list
- Go to device manager and delete the printer from the list
- Go to Start - Printers (assuming you got XP)
- Click File-Server Properties-Drivers
- Delete the printer
Make sure printer is plugged in to your pc
Insert the printer driver cd and reboot machine
Once rebooted, you will see the microsoft hardware wizard come up wanting to install the printer
Click CANCEL (DO NOT install using this)
Run setup from your cd
It should install all the necessary drivers from the cd

I think they need some kind of drivers but in windows 7 I just plugged them in and they played. Its usb speakers from intel. Can someone please tell me where to get the driver for plug and play speakers from? When I at first plugged them in,the windows device wizard opened and told me to pinpoint the location from where I could get these drivers, i didnt have any so I clicked on dont remind of installing this driver again, and since then, the speaker icon in device manager has also been lost. It showed up in sound, video and game controllers but now all i see is an high definition audio bus in other devices.

The screenshot has been attached.

Also, someone please tell me what the ethernet controller is, it is also showing up in otehr devices with no driver, can someone please tell me how to fix it?

My computer has developed a problem I can?t diagnose.

I first noticed an issue when I was trying to plug and play a Logitech webcam that had previously been used on the computer some years ago. I couldn?t get the PC to recognise it in any USB port, though its power light came on when it was plugged in.

Anyway since it wasn?t essential to have the webcam, I just aborted what I was doing and decided to leave it.

A day or two later, I needed to print something and discovered that my printer (Canon Pixma IP 3300) now wasn?t being recognised either and I couldn?t connect to it. It is also connected via a USB and has functioned normally since it was first connected 2 years ago. I tried uninstalling it and reinstalling the software, but the PC just isn?t picking it up.

I started to look on the internet for people with similar problems and discovered loads of advice, some of which I?ve tried to apply, but with no success. (Incidentally, I?ve checked my Plug and Play is set up correctly).

Along the way with some of these solutions, I discovered that my 'Device Manager' is empty. I tried to correct that using the published internet solutions, but again have had no success.

I also noticed during this period that my ?My Computer? window, which has always loaded instantaneously, was now taking ages to load. I have managed to correct this by changing the Windows Image acquisition setting from ?automatic? to ?manual?.

My USB ports appear to be operating okay in other re... Read more

Hello, I am hoping someone here might have some thoughts on what could cause a self-installing USB device to fail.

I am running Windows XP Pro SP2.

I purchased a Mint 220 wireless USB device. This device requires no software. The USB device is supposed to automatically install when you plug it into a USB port. However, rather than seeing the System Tray messages that it found new hardware and then installs the hardware, I am getting the Found New Hardware Wizard. It is looking for an .inf file for the USB device, but the driver file does not exist and there is no place to direct the wizard.

I tried rebooting, but the problem still exists. I tried reading the user guide for this product and looking at the FAQs, but my problem was not described. I contacted the tech support people, but they only came up with a series of steps to try that did not work.

So now I am wondering if there is some device setting or registry setting that is preventing me from self-installing this device. I have not changed any settings on my system, and I have never experienced this problem with any other device. I also tried switching to different USB ports with the same effect.

Can anyone help? Thanks.

Hello,
When I go to start, run, then type in services.msc......and try to start my universal plug and play device host I get an error 1608: dependency service or group failed to start. Im trying to get my xbox 360 media center up and running with the windows one and this was one of the problems that would be a reason for it not to work. At least on the tech support site. But I would like to know how I can get that up and running again or install a new one or whatever it takes. Thanks

Trying to start using an external USB 2.0 Hard Drive enclosure unit on my Dell XPS M1710 laptop running VISTA.

Inserted hard drive from an ealier PC, powered it up, pluged it in ot my laptop USB port, powered up my laptop and was expecting to get a messgae that New Hardware was found, readt to install the required drivers (al be it that the supplied disk does not seem to have a Vista driver). Anyhow, my laptop does not seem to notice a new piece of hardware has been added. I tried rebooting and checking all the cables and all seems OK there.

Anyone got any ideas? Haven't had this problem before.

Basically, I have a HP Pavilion laptop, only 4 months old, pretty good specs, running on windows vista. At first, it was working like a dream, and I didnt believe what I was hearing about problems with vista. However, recently, I have noticed that anything I plug in2 any of the usb drives (be it ipod, external hard drive, or even a brand new printer) isnt installing. They are recognised alright, but instead of installing automatically, I am prompted for a disc, and even for things which I do have the disc (eg printer), it still does not work. Things that were used before this problem cropped up, eg another ipod, another printer, a mouse, are working fine. I have spoken to HP, Microsoft, the printer manufacturers, tech guys, everyone, and the best advice I got was to backup my data and wipe everything and start again. But seeing as I can't use an external hard drive, this could prove tedious and frustrating. I would be eternally gr8ful to any1 who could offer me anything to help me out of this bind!

Whenever I plug in my Sansa e260, my speaker configuration settings switch from stereo to headphones. This wouldn't be a problem, except for the fact that in headphone output, all bass is zeroed out and treble is maximized. The change happens more or less instantly.
I'm on windows 7 x64, and my soundcard is a Creative Sound Blaster Audigy SE SB0570LPVP with the v1.04.0090 drivers.

A:speaker configuration changes when I plug in an mp3 player

I have an Audigy SE sound card installed in a Vista 32 bit system and there is no problems with using headphones with it. The EQ (Bass/Treble) does not change using headphones.

Do you have the latest Windows 7 64 bit Creative drivers? If not install them and see what happens. If not you may want to reinstall what you have and see what happens.

Do you have the correct front panel connection to the Audigy SE?

Finally, how do you connect your Sansa E260? Is it connected via USB? and if it is, it is probably setting itself as the default playback device.

For a while now my PC has been sluggish with "services.exe" running at 50% CPU usage. The problem is absolutely not a virus - I've run numerous scans with multiple virus programs and even had a second level troubleshooter from Vipre look at my PC remotely and (after an hour or so of looking at everything we could think of) pronounce it clean of viruses. I ran Process Explorer which breaks down all the services running under services.exe but doesn't show which one is using the CPU cycles so I killed all services one at a time till I finally killed enough to cause my PC to reboot. CPU usage was still 50% right up to the last one so no luck there. Finally I found that if I booted to safe mode, the problem didn't occur so I used msconfig to narrow things down. And the culprit turned out to be the "Plug and Play" service. If I leave everything enabled normally but kill that one service and reboot, services.exe shows 0% in task manager and the idle process is where it should be in the 95-99% range. My question now is, how do I narrow down things further to figure out what is causing the Plug and Play service to bog down my PC so much?

FYI, I'm running Windows XP SP3 with all the latest updates. My CPU is dual-core which I suspect is why services.exe (with Plug and Play enabled) sits at 50% CPU usage (most of the time exactly at 50.0%) - I think it is just taking up all the cycles of one core. In any case, SOMETHING is running that shouldn... Read more

When I was installing Windows XP SP3 on this computer, I received a notice that the installer couldn't find a specific file, but I was able to skip over it and resume installation. I received this notice when I installed Windows on another machine but this time looked it up and was able to find the file on the CD (don't remember the file name...).

On the first computer, it seems like a lot of plug and play functionality doesn't work...specifically when I hook up my Creative Zen (MP3 player) or even Blackberry. I am unable to transfer files to or from these devices through Explorer like I can the other computer in which I did a thorough installation of Windows. I am also unable to update Windows Media Player, which could or could not be related.

Is it possible the file I skipped over is what's causing this issue? Is there any way I can repair Windows or do I have to re-install?

I recently put a new 30 Gig harddrive on an old pieced together computer. When I loaded windows on it, it didn't find any PnP devices and said that it was missing drivers and for other devices. I took the same hard drive out and put on another computer and it worked fine and located all my PnP. What's worse is that my old 6 Gig harddrive that i was replacing will not boot up anymore except in safe mode. I tried replacing the motherboard with a new one as well with no success. Same results. A tech said when he looked at it that the IDE cable was not plugged in correctly. He turned it around and said it would be fine. Needless to say, it is not. It now gives a blank black screen. Would windows have installed with the cable in wrong and why did my board recognize it? Any ideas???

A:win 98 se and plug and play

Had the cable been in wrong, then no it would not have recognized it, would not have therefore allowed you to install..and then subsequently boot into safe mode...

It appears that either the tech lied because he/she didn't know much or if the tech did put the cable on wrong then I fear for the current state of your sys. board...Most new cable connectors are such that they will only go on one way...Otherwise, they would have to be forced and would break/bend pins...
Was this warranty work? I would contact the manufacturer and the authorized service center manager that sent that tech. regardless of whether your cable is on correctly or not because the simple truth is that it was not repaired and the services were paid for...BOL

Hi patti9,

Assuming you are on a WinXP computer: Start>Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services
will bring up the Services window.

Right-click the Universal Plug & Play Device Host service, and select Properties.
Use the pull-down in the Startup Type to select Disabled.
Click on Apply
Click Ok to exit the UP&P Properties window
Exit the Services window
Done.

THE PROBLEM:The computer doesn't work with "plug and play" checked in the services (msconfig). When "plug and play" is checked, the computer's CPU runs at mostly 100% non-stop. When I uncheck it the computer works fine but then nothing plug and play works.

The trouble started after I clicked on a fake facebook link through email. My antivirus (Avast) asked to abort and I did. This is an update to my last post, since then, the system crashed and have only just got back on line.
I have an IBM Thinkpad 240, model 2609-21U with Windows ME and am using a Micro Solutions Backpack bantam CD ROM external drive model 181100, parallel port connection.
Some months ago I attempted to load Office XP, this did not fully install and "unrolled" itself. This action somehow corrupted the registry and would not reboot even into 'safe mode.'
I finally got into DOS and ran scanreg. Then I ran configsafe, this has got the machine running but will not read the parallel printer port LPT1, USB or the IR ports. All else seems OK.
When I reload the backpack driver, it loaded in the control panel under a SCSI device manager with a conflict, when I rebooted using the 'safe mode', the control panel seems correct, but then I am in 'safe' mode and cannot access the CD-ROM.
At the moment the backpack driver loads into it's own folder in device manager, not under cd-drives, there is no cd-drive folder.
When I try to print, the paper keeps feeding through the printer continuously without printing.
The only conflicts I can find are :-
IRQ Holder for PCI Steering Device ID PCI\IRQ Holder\60 error code 22
I was also getting :-

Does anyone have any thoughts about the below statement? It's from MS Windows XP Inside Out by Bott, Siechert and Stinson. I'm getting conflicting information. In XP Annoyances by David Karp, it says just the opposite---make sure the BIOS is set to Plug and Play.

Any comments or insight would be greatly appreciated. When in doubt should I enable PNP or not?

"After verifying that you're running the most recent BIOS version, use the BIOS setup program to select the "non-Plug and Play operating system" option. This advice may seem counterintuitive-after all, Windows XP is indeed a Plug and Play operating system. However, this setting was intended for use with earlier Windows versions, and if it's set incorrectly it can prevent the Windows XP boot loader from accessing devices at startup. "

-Trader

A:Plug and Play

Chances are it will make no difference. XP overrides many BIOS settings, IRQ's, and memory resource assignments.

I would tend to think that setting Plug and Play active would prevent conflicts between what resources were assigned if the BIOS' assignments differed from XP's preferences.

If there is ever a booting problem such as he described, just enter BIOS setup and try it the other way .

Windows 98 hangs on boot screen at plug and play then when you reboot again it take you into config screen. Does this mean that the plug and play is disabled and need to be enabled. How concerned should I be in here I'm afraid I could mess things up. Then it asks for you to choose F10 and select yes to save changes!. OH BOY!

A:Plug and Play

d.a.,

You could mess things up, but you won't if you don't mess with what you don't know about.

And if you DO change something and get scared, then DO NOT SAVE. If you exit without saving, then 'No Harm, No Foul'.

At this point, I'm not sure what the problem is, but LOOK through the BIOS...it will be a good learning experience...and when you find the entry that says, "PnP Op/Sys installed" it should say Yes. Win 98 is a PnP Op/Sys.

One unanswered question on my mind is when did this start to happen and what did you do or change JUST BEFORE it began?

Hi,

Don't think you need to fix anything with PnP that is not broken. If using XP, just make sure your BIOS setup menu has the PnP set to Disabled, and if using Win98, then set it to Enabled. My guess would be that it is already set that way, but that is how it should be. Also, make sure you have the latest drivers for anything that is not functioning properly.

I have an external hard drive which I use as a backup on my Sony Vaio laptop. I've been using it for years and previously, when I would plug it in to the USB ports (it's one of the sort that uses two) the computer would recognize it and I'd be off and running.

In the last few weeks, though, the machine has stopped working that way. Instead, when I plug in an external hard drive the entire system hangs and the drive is never recognized. However, if I reboot with the drive plugged in THEN the system finds it and will let me use it.

I take this to be a driver/Windows XP issue, since the hardware hasn't changed and clearly still works. I'm running windows XP corporate, with all current service packs and updates.

Does anyone know what may have happened and how I can reverse it?

A:Plug and play less succesful than it used to be

Your External HDD may have errors or be failing. Backup all important data from the drive using Ubuntu Live Cd (burn the ISO to a blank cd using Imgburn and how to burn an iso to a cd using imgburn). Access the drive and backup all important data to a thumb drive.

Now to check if the drives is faulty. Go to the manufacture of the drive and see if they have a diagnostic drive test tools. Or use Ultimate Boot Cd burn the iso to a blank cd using Imgburn UBCD has drive test tools.

Hello all,
Could I please trouble the experts here for some advice, I'm at my wit's end!
Thank you in advance for your time and help!

The issue:
Portable USB devices (have tried with three different pen-drives, and an iriver mp3 players) will plug in, and light up as 'connected', and their drive letter will become visible in explorer, but they are inaccessible. Explorer will look as if its loading (and the device's 'busy' signal will usually come up), but eventually nothing will appear, or the window will freeze. Right clicking on the drive is impossible, explorer will simply freeze.

All of the devices work fine on other pcs. Meanwhile, I have other USB devices plugged in such as usb mouse/keyboard, external seagate expansion drive and external usb soundcard/mixer which all work fine, (though the mouse can be slow to respond on startup). It seems to be a a problem only with plug'n'play devices.

On many occasions, the stick will actually work the first ever time its plugged in to this computer, it will install drivers normally, etc. Then once I'm in explorer, usually after loading a few files onto it, the computer will freeze up, and the stick/drive is not accessible any more.

I haven't had this pc long (maybe half a year), and it did used to work fine at first but the problem arose a few months ago.

Solutions I've tried:I've uninstalled the trouble drivers in device manager, allowed windows to reinstall them, the problem still persists.

my dad was trying to install the software for a microsoft PCI slot card before installing the card and we kept having a problem finding HasUpNP.inf

It said to look in the Temp folder, but I wasn't able to find it and I wasn't "authorized" to search the UPNP folder on the CD Rom. This is for a Dell computer with WIN98 (we finally got the display problem fixed)

I even tried to see if maybe it was something to do with this old program called WinTV (since the HAS part looked like the first letters of a manufacturer's name).

Anyway, I tried this name in google and no results. I managed to get the Broadband utility software installed by "Browsing" the CD using the "browse" feature when I was in MY COMPUTER.

Anyway, does anyone have any suggestions? I'm totally clueless and I really want to get this fixed. There are some programs on that computer I want to update (spyware elimination programs) and I wanted to download some programs on it so I could clean up junk files and stuff.

So, if anyone has suggestions or maybe a link to help me, I'll be grateful!

When I go to properties of my computer---then devise manager---at my Sound, video and game controller---I have the yellow warning sign on these 2 items-----
ES688 Plug and Play AudioDrive
ES688 Plug and Play AudioDrive[WDM]

My other items in this section are
ESS SOLO-1 DOS Emulation
ESS SOLO-1 PCI AudioDrive
which to the best of my knowledge are good.

What I need to know is how to fix either both 688's or at least fix one and remove the other.
Problem is when I try to use ES688 Plug and Play AudioDrive ---I cannot reconnect to the internet
When I switch back to the one with [WDM] I can connect to internet

For ES688 Plug and Play AudioDrive it says this devise is either not present, not working properly, or does not have all drivers installed. [Code 24}

But when I go to detect hardware in ES688 Plug and Play AudioDrive I get Windows has finished detecting hardware, but did not find any new devises on your system.

When I go to ES688 Plug and Play AudioDrive[WDM], I get this---Update Driver---and when I click that it says it has found a better drive which is ES688 Plug and Play AudioDrive, but as I previously stated---when I update to this driver I cannot connect back into internet.

Hope this is making sense---what I need to know is what if any driver is available to install in order to get rid of the yellow warning sign?

If more info needed please ask---just not sure what kind of info is needed right at this ... Read more

Hi, up until recently my computer was able to have plug & play devices inserted and used without error.

now, the problem is i cannot use any PLug & play devices, eg. USB Key, PSP, Scanner etc.

The computer seems to be able to detect what the Hardware is, but thats as far as it gets, then asks me to find install the software.. which should install automatically from the devices.

Plus a new item in the device manager has appeared, its called 'eeyeh' and contains all the Plug & Play devices.

I have tried system restore but each time it failed to restore the system to a point before the occurance.

Attached is a screen shot of the 'device' in question.

Thanks in advance.
