I have made in GIMP two .ico files for two file types that do not have any program or icon registered to them. they are .dls & .sf2, both of which are soundfont files. I have many programs that use these files. like SONY Acid using .dls. ModPlug Tracker also uses .dls. I have a midi converter that uses .sf2 and so does FL Studio. and Awave Studio uses all soundfont files.

I tried using this program as I was told to directly on the homepage of Google: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/12383/change-a-file-types-icon-in-windows-7/ but neither .dls nor .sf2 files are listed anywhere in that program. Many other unknown file extensions are listed in there but not .dls or .sf2

A:change icons for unknown file types?

I found out how to do it. using the same File Type Manager as in the link, I go to Edit>New File Extension and type in .dls and .sf2 and change the icon from there. I thought I'd share my findings in case someone else is looking for an answer on a later date. Thanks anyway

I'm running WindowsXP Professional on a Dell Latitude D600, and I recently swapped out my laptop base unit, due to a failure with the prior unit. I successfully swapped over all the peripherals from my old laptop unit (screen, drives, Wi-Fi, battery, etc.) and the laptop started up normally, with no problems.

While not a problem, I just now noticed that on Windows Explorer, under [file] Name column, I see that for everyone of the files listed, there a very small "green checkmark" or a "yellow exclamation mark" in the lower right-hand corner of the symbol that designates the file type (Word, Excel, PDF, etc.). I've never seen that under Windows Explorer before, working this laptop - or any computer for that matter.

Anybody have an explanation for the mysterious symbols that have shown up, all of a sudden? Thanks.

Good evening.

I wanted to ask if there is a tweak to remove the symbol from the icons UAC.

Thanks

A:how to remove the symbol from the icons UAC ?

Turn off UAC (only if you know what you're doing with a PC)
Reboot, then right Click, Properties, Change Icon and change it to the normal icon and the shield will be gone

I keep UAC turned off because it's a huge pain in the ass in my opinion.

To change your UAC settings, Click your start button and where it says "Search" type in User

look for the one that says 'Change User Account Settings" and turn it off

Are you running Norton 360? (or similar)

If so it is called Backups Status Indicators.

Tell what files are backed up or pending backups.

You can uncheck that option if you dont want it.

Dear Techguy support, I'm guilty for not ensuring my defenses were adequate on my son's laptop. There is currently a small sheild on the turn off icon whenever I attempt to turn off the laptop. I don't think it is suppose to be there. There is a note under it that tells me to click to install important updates and turn off my computer. Also, for some reason Internet Explorer icon is no longer on the desktop and I can't find it on the program list on the control panel. Not sure what happened. My son tells me he tried to reinstall it from online but received an error message saying there was a problem preventing reinstalling it. Below is my Hijackthis log. Please advise. Thanks .

Hello,
My computer has been running strangely slow for the past week. Then all of a sudden I booted up and there were no desktop items. The Windows wallpaper is still up. When I drag my mouse below to the taskbar thingy, it turns into an hourglass symbol. Cntr-alt dlt is non-functional. In Safe mode with networking things work seemingly fine. I recall Firefox warning me of a busy script or something a couple of times the week before all this happened, also firefox reported high memory usage. Here are my logs, I greatly appreciate your help!

Got a steal on a computer FX55, 4 gig ram, 2 geforce 6600 GT 128 video cards, 1 tb of HD space but I'm stuck trying to get this thing to start. I've gotten the 800b0100 error but now I'm not getting that far after doing a full clean format of the primary HD. What I have connected is a dvd drive, the main ide drive (has a sata raid setup but have that disconnected), 2 G of ram and the video cards.

I've set the bios to boot the CD first but I'm getting an error after it verifies the DMI pooling and says booting from CD:
The next thing that happens is I get a message that says

press any key to boot from CD - then right below it I get
{some sign it looks like an 8 with the bottom of the 8 cut off} is missing
Press Ctr - alt - del to restart.

Any help would be appreciated. I don't have much experience with the computer so the history is a little unknown.

Segoe UI Symbol, seguisym.ttf would not appear to be a very significant file if you could find it using Explorer in the Windows\fonts folder, but you cannot open the font's folder in Explorer under usual circumstances - to see all the .ttf files there, you would need a third party file manager, like the one from 7-Zip.

Download
Opening the font folder in Explorer, since Windows XP, takes you to the Control Panel Fonts applet. The left pane is the Explorer window, the one on the right is from the Control Panel - spot the difference:

System fonts are hidden by default, and your only true friend here is the old Charmap.exe accessory, which sees all.
A bit of Windows history is useful here:- there is a TrueType Font called Marlett.ttf introduced with Windows 95. It has no alphanumerics at all, all the glyphs contained in Marlett are Windows 95 (et.seq.) interface screen components - including scrollbar buttons, button down shadows etc. A neat solution to storing reusable screen components for easy access, using scalar vector graphics in a format already well embedded in the Windows system.

Segoe UI Symbol (SUIS) takes on the same role for Metro components. Already SUIS has a version in Windows 7 - in Windows 8 it has been expanded, from 505kB to 1.66 MB. At first glance, it is another Arial /Univers /Tahoma type sans serif font that you could write to your grandmother with. It then has lots of latin accented characters, ancient Ogham & Runic inscriptions, and loads and l... Read more

Good evening:

Recently I noticed that two unknown icons now show up in my system tray, having icon graphics of "A" "9". Double clicking on them, right-clicking, or simply hovering my mouse over them unfortunately does nothing -- I don't know what they are. I'm concerned they could be something malicious.

Can anyone help?

I have tried windows restore - that wont work
I have tried changing from 32 bit to 16 bit and back that wont work either.

It has nothing to do with resolution. I am attaching a snapshot of what i mean.

Please help me restore them back or let me know if this is due to a virus or trojan.

Hi, I was running an antivirus, and I noticed that some of the file descriptions on my laptop had what I think are Chinese symbols in them. should I be worried about this or is it normal?

one of the files was C:\Windows\Installer\16cd65.msp->#152TTo152U/(chinese symbol)InstallExecuteSequence there were more but I didn't manage to catch what they were, I took a photo of the screen that I can post if it helps but the symbol is probably to small to read.

It was over a week ago when this happened and I can remember if I was running 9labs removal tool or eset. I can't find a log for eset (I don't think it picked up anything) but here is the results for 9lab:

I've had the asian language pack installed on my laptop for awhile now and I know of a similar issue that involves the Korean won symbol, fortunately that never happened to me and I use my computer to type Korean frequently. I was attempting to get a program to run in Japanese to help out one of my friends, and after a restart; anywhere there's a file path it shows the ¥ instead of \.

I know there's no difference aside from appearance, but it's really annoying to look at it.

I've uninstalled the program and looked around the Regional and Language options, policy settings, and about anywhere I can think of, maybe I missed it somewhere, but I can't find a way to revert it. Can anyone help? Thanks.

Hello forum,

I have been trying to figure out how to change the status of a file that is present on network discovery on another computer.

I am just going through and assessing each file.

I notice the only person I really would like to share with is anyone that uses the external hard drive - much like the other files on the hard drive that do not have a lock on it.

I know that it may be basic - but I just want a work around for the few folders that I managed to see in computer management.

If someone could please give me a basic idea of what menu's to go into - I promise I will not change the behaviour of any folders.

Thank you.

Just basic steps -

As I am on a network/workgroup and do not want the homegroup - what is the best option.

Recently a symbol or "mini icon" has started to appearing over lower-left quadrant of file thumbs. It is a blue ~square with 2 horizontal white chevrons, ">>". They cover about 1/4 of each xLg photo icon/ thumbnail. I'd like to get rid of these pesky & unwanted mini-icons. A quick screen print of photo files, as thumbnails, is now useless because so much of each photo is obscured.

Hi to all. Before I formatted my HP computer (Windows XP Prof Media Center Edition) I made a new folder called August 9th stuff saved. Then I put my documents, Email addresses, list of some forums and a few programs into this folder.
Opened this folder and everything was in it!
Burnt it onto DVD+ with Nero, made sure that the option said DVD. Then, Make Data DVD. Found the folder, then added the folder and burnt it. ( I have done this a hundred times and never had any problem!)
However, now putting the DVD into computer, it opens with this "August 9th stuff.o02" but this is all you get, you cannot open this file, However when you click on properties it shows
size 572 mb which is correct!
I have had a technician working on this for 3 hours, he cannot open it, if you can, I will take my hat off to you!
Cheerio and have anice day.

Its been a long time since i tried this, So i cant identify what I did to cause it .

Trying to drag multiple .sut ( brush files ) into Art-App it belongs. From the File Explorer window. Was able to do this many times in the past.

I noticed something ; when I use the search engine called
" Everything " from its window interface, if I call up the files in that window, then I'm able to drag and drop the files from that window, directly into the Art app. But cant do it from the File explorer window like I was able to do before.

Windows 10 home basic.

One suggestion, I read in the windows 7 forum, there might be some registry change that happened. But I dont know about such things, just wanted to suggest a idea. Anyone can help ?

Here's a weird one, I have a WinXP PC, with a hidden system file in the root of C:\ that is approximately 8 bytes in size. The filename shows up as the following image:http://imgur.com/ywamEnr
Namely Unicode characters
ℤ™☠
U+2124, U+2122, U+2620
Double-Stroke Z, Trade Mark symbol, Skull and Crossbones.
I have no idea how it got there or what software created it, but it looks decidedly suspicious (although Symantec Endpoint Protection and Malwarebytes are detecting nothing).
Has anyone seen anything like this before?

Is this likely to be part of some malware?

I've got a USB stick that is 234GB when formatted. It's from China (I got it because the person who got it in China didn't want it), cost at the time less than 10 ($16) and right now has an unknown file system. It can't be formatted to any sort of file system at all.

At the moment there's nothing on it. I've had to delete everything on it because any file stored on the USB stick became corrupted. I'd get errors saying something along the line of "the program does not support this file extension" for everything stored on there, from pdfs to wmvs to m4as. Thankfully I've not lost anything major, having finished school a while ago.

I really need these USB stick because with it, I can copy everything on my current computer's hard drive to my new laptop's hard drive in one go.

Anybody know how I can solve this problem, or should I just bin it?

A slue of icons have all changed to one program - changing them back does nothing (it just changes them all to the same icon. I have looked at program defaults and even removed updates still nothing seems to correct the issue. The windows start button does the same as well - all of the programs listed there have the same icon.
When I click properties they all seem to all say: LNK File (.lnk)
How do I restore - I tried a system restore, but it will only go back to today nothing farther in the past.

Hi guys

This is my first post on this forum. I found it while surfing the net. I am already impressed by the amount of information that can be found here.

Well, now to my problem.
I installed Windows XP on my friend's PC. Everything went fine. After that I installed the necessary drivers and other applications including Flyakite OSX 3.5, which turns your Windows into Mac OS X.
Everything seemed OK until I opened My Computer as usual and tried to open drive D: . Surprisingly it didn't open, it rather gave me a dialog box telling me to choose the program I want to open this "file". Strange!!
When I right click on the partition and chose explore or open it open normally. The same happened with all my partitions except the primary partition C:. It's the only one I can open through my computer. When I want to access the other drives I used Windows explorer or simply press the "Folders" button in My Computer. I have also noticed that when I right click on these partitions I get strange signs like '[email protected] in the menu that appears.

My guess was it's a virus, so I did a full system scan with Avast antivirus. It did find two trojan horses, I moved them to chest (quarantine). But that's it. And still the same symptoms as before.
Before I forget, there was another strange thing, but that was resolved (I think) when I did the avast system scan. Whenever I select one folder, the surrounding folders are selected, too. It's like I use the... Read more

Hi

This is my first post, i'm really embarrassed, but hopefully someone can help me with my problem.

Yesterday i was instaling a new video game, which went very well. Once completed, i clicked to open it, at which time a box came up asking which program i wanted to use to open the .exe I selected the game .exe, and then (stupidly) ticked a little check box that said something like " use this program to open all files"

At this point, all the icons on my desk top changed, and all the links on my start list now open the game file rather than their previous .exe files

In order to open any program, i now need to go to the program folder on my computer and dig out the .exe

I've done some searches to try to find a solution, but i'm not able to get back to where i was before i installed the game.

Further, when i set up a new account, all the icons and program links are ok.

Does anyone know how i can reverse my stupidity? I would be eternally grateful for any assistance....

links i've been looking at to resolve the issue are as follows:

http://www.computing.net/answers/windows-xp/icons-all-go-to-same-thing/172066.html

http://forums.techguy.org/windows-xp/671717-lnk-extension-removal.html

I followed the instructions on the second link, but it's for window XP, and it did'nt change anything.

Any ideas wellcome, many thanks

Hi

When I save to my favorites file (D:\ drive), the icon from that page entered appears. I have dual drives C:\ and D:\. C:\ drive stores my Windows op. system only. D:\ drive stores all my documents, desktop, favorites ect...

When I go to C:\ drive, propertys, tools and do a disck clean of temp files (check in the box only) and clean, everything is fine when I re-enter my favorites file. All the page icons show. If I leave for a time and re-enter my favorites file, icons are dropped and only the internet explorer icon appears. It never did that in the past and has only started doing this in the last month. Please tell me what may be causing this anomily.

A:[SOLVED] Not Holding Icons In Favorites File

G'Day NoteTech, and Welcome to TSF!

I had this exact problem a little while ago, and there are two solutions to cure it...

1. On your C: drive you will need to create a new folder and name it "Favicons".
Once this is done go to where you have your favourite icons stored, and copy them into this folder.

Now if that doesn't work, this alternative surely does

2. Go here, and download this little gem from PC Magazine?.
Its a free utility called FavOrg, that 'hunts' the web for each of your custom favicons, and stores them in their own folder in your "Program Files" under 'PC Magazine Utilities".
Since I installed it I haven't had a single hassle.

Give these two workarounds a try and post back with the results.

Yesterday I had some serious problems with my system, some spyware was preventing me from even running AVG, Spybot, or Ad-Aware. I eventually managed to run ad-aware from diagnostic startup mode, and cleared enough of the problem to allow me to run spybot & AVG as normal.

However, now when I search with google, the first page of results is always for the same handful of sites (freebiejunction.com, americansingles.com, etc), no matter what terms i use. I read something that suggested the "Unknown File in Winsock LSP" lines could be the culprit, but I'm not sure how to remedy this. Also, I was forced to reinstall AVG, and now I can't get it to update the database.

On a Windows 7 machine I am having an issue where you go, for example, to Outlook 2010 and in a new e-mai message choose to 'Attach File' and when the Insert File menu pops up where you can choose your document everything is blank. In the left pane you can still choose 'Desktop', or wherever your file is located, but in the right pane it's just empty even though there are documents there. 'All Files' is chosen and this happens in other applications too (not just Outlook)where an attachment can be added. I've logged on with another account and it doesn't have the same problem.

But if you navigate to where the file is located, even if you can't see it, you can still type the filename and it uploads. I tried rebooting the system and this didn't help.

Hi, a while ago, I was annoyed with having the little shortcut arrows on desktop icons. I decided to try to find a way to have them removed, so there would be no arrows for shortcuts, and I looked on the internet for how to do so.

1. One site had me download a registry edit thing, and change my registry.
2. Another site let me download a program that would supposedly remove the shortcut arrows.

And, for a while, one of these methods worked, and I didn't have any arrows on my icons! But then, for some reason, it backfired, and now I have that strange 'unknown program' icon in place of an arrow. Here, http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u...s/Untitled.jpg
(It's a safe image, don't worry)

The problem is, I really don't know which of the two things above made this happen, but I can't get it back. What can I do? I'd be fine with or without the arrows, but just not how it is now!

This happened over a year ago, I do not remember the names of the programs, what I did with the registry, and I cannot use system restore that far. Please help with any solution. I have Windows 7.

A:[SOLVED] Icons on desktop have 'missing file icon' instead of shortcut arrow?

Well, the first thing I am going to ask is if you backed up your registry (You never should make changes to the registry - especially if its a never heard of online tweak - without backing it up) That's the short fix, if you did not back up your registry then please bare with me.

Please test the following:
-Double click "My Computer"
-Go into your C:// drive
-Enter the "Program Files" folder
-Go into any folder containing an installed program, and right click on the exe file inside
-"Create Shortcut"

If a shortcut is created within the folder without that ugly missing file icon, then you can just simply go and do that with all your other programs, drag the shortcuts to your desktop, and delete the previous shortcuts. (Then you can rename them something more straightforward, instead of shortcut to so and so just so and so)

If that did not work, I would try a registry cleaner. CCleaner is free and has a basic registry optimizer built in, though you could try a more specific program, such as a RegSeeker.

If none of those work, then please get back to me on it. (I'll probably have thought of another fix by then)

By the way, now that you mentioned those shortcut arrows, I'm getting annoyed at the ones on my desktop!

I think that's a Red Herring and has nothing to do with taking forever to connect. However, you can Rgt Click on the taskbar, select 'Properties', check mark 'Show Quick Launch', and your big 'E' should show up just to the right of 'Start'. If not, did you uninstall MS Internet Explorer? If your 'E' is already in Quick Launch, clicking it is the same as clicking your big 'E' on the desk top.

I have two questions. First, I'm getting a strange error at startup. It's hard to explain because the file name is in symbols (5 little boxes). It says: Windows cannot find "box box box box box". Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file click the start button and then click Search. DESKTOP error says: Could not load "box..." specified in the registry. Make sure the file exists on your computer or remove the reference to it in the registry. I have no idea how to go about removing it when I can't even type it in to search.

Also, what programs do I need running in startup, if any?

I use several different word processors, two of which are Atlantis and Jarte. Both create (mostly) .rtf files. My favorite kind.

On my XP computer, Atlantis and Jarte (and every other word processor I've ever used) show their own icons in Explorer. If I use Atlantis to create an .rtf file, that file shows Atlantis' icon, and every file I create in Jarte shows Jarte's icon.

On my Win7 machine, that is not happening. I get an icon that Windows believes is the default .rtf file and that's all. Is there some way I can change that behavior to the XP way of displaying icons?

Yes, I did change the default .rtf application hoping that would fix the "problem", but it did not. It only changed the default icons to the app I chose as the default. I would very much like to know, at a glance, which wordprocessor created a specific file.

If you can help, I thank you very much. If not, thanks anyway.

A:File Type Icons vs Application Icons

Unfortunately, that will not happen within Windows 7. One work-around is to have, under a master rtf folder, an rtf folder for X program and an rtf folder for program Y, with programs X & Y preset to save everything in their assigned directories.

Virus appeared a few days ago when I tried to uninstall iBryte. It wiped out all icons and the bottom start menu. Used help from my brother and the Dell dock at the top to download and run Spybot and Malwarebytes. Ran both and identified and removed >30 problem programs. I continue to rerun the scans since they will run with nothing found then the next run show a malware - iBryte has popped up a couple of times. Concerned that the icons have not repopulated which makes me wonder if it is truly fixed. My desktop seems to be stable now but I want this gone for good.

Using 'new' MS Word 2007, and trying to edit and replace 'square root' symbol √ with wingdings 2 'tick' symbol P, but although I can copy or ctrl V the square root symbol into the replace dialog box, when I Ctrl V in the tick symbol it just appears as a weird symbol, not a tick at all. If I continue with the replace, the square root symbol is replaced by a cute little square, not the tick that I urgently need. Please help!

A:Solved: Edit and replace tick symbol in MS Word 2007

Welcome to the Forum!
Your problem isn't with the square root symbol - it is being found and replaced. The problem is with the replacement. Open a new document and insert the symbol you want (the "2 'tick' symbol") and the square root symbol. Copy the square root symbol.
Go back to your original document and open up the Replace pop-up.
Set the Font to Symbol for both the Find and Replace fields (I assume that is what you are using) and CTRL-V the square root symbol into the Find field. (No, it won't look like that, but that is okay.) Go back to the other document and copy the "2 'tick' symbol" and CTRL-V it into the Replace filed (it also will not look like what you expect.
Click Find and Replace when it comes to the first found symbol (just to make sure it looks like you want.)
If it looks okay, click Replace all.

I am using Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit on Dell XPS 15 L502x Notebook.

Today morning when i switched on my laptop, I found some of the Icon changed to unknown icon.(See Attachements)

I searched google i found somewhere a question was posted with same problem. The solution was given as to change the destination of the target exe file. I performed it by renaming the folder in which the exe file is present. I found that the icon changed back to original icons from unknown-icon.

Also when i right click and select properties of those exe files, the original icon of the application appears there, but not in explorer / desktop / taskbar.

I am posting this question here to troubleshoot my problem.
Dont ask me to reinstall all applications and software. I have already done it and but the icon remains as Unknown until i change its destination from its original destination. Even avast icon changed to unknown.(see image) But i cant change its destination to check for its reappearance because it is always open when i start system.

Why this destination(Target path) of the exe file affect the original icon of the application.

Also guide me how to attach image in my post

Hello,

Haven't done any C programming in a year, but I've got to update my scripting app for changing the format of a bulk load of files, so I'm back at it.

I'm using Borland Turbo C++ 3.1 (wince for abuse ), which I've used ever since I left Uni far too many years ago. All of my apps which used to work are coming up with the error 'Linker Error: Undefined symbol _main in module WINMAIN' when I attempt to build them. I know they used to work, because I have the executables to prove it!

Most searches have revealed that 'you need a "main()" process' which I know isn't the case when you're using WinMain(), but I've obviously got some environment / configuration setting wrong.

I'm using a project '4matter2.prj' which includes a resource file '4matter2.rc', two headers '4matter2.dlg' and '4matdlgr.h' in addition to the main '4matter.c' code.

I've tried two fresh installs of Borland Turbo C++ 3.1 on different laptops (one of which was the one I used to write the apps some time in April last year), both generate the same error for all of my project based apps.

I can compile and make the executable if I only use the .c, but obviously, I lose my icon and menus which are stored in the resource file.

Any help much appreciated.

Rich.

A:Solved: C 'Linker Error: Undefined symbol _main in module WINMAIN

It's ok, for some reason, my projects had different files included in them. No idea how it'd worked before (unless I'd broken them all afterwards). in the project file you need the .def file that tells Turbo C what exports to make, also include the .c, but not the headers (since there part of the include statements in the .c.

Sorry to waste anyone's time, but thanks for looking.

Rich.

Hello,

Could you please help me with the following question. I have a simple division formula (=A1/A2) and would like to add a symbol, "x" after that, so the format of the cell would be: 1.23x. My problem is that I can't use & "x" because the format of the number (2 decimal places) no longer holds, and I get something like: 1.234445555x if I use (=A1/A2 &"x").

Could anyone please help me with the solution?

Thank you!

Hey all, this error message started appearing after I booted my laptop up after it had sat for almost 6 months. I do not remember what I had installed on my computer before I didn't touch it for 6 months, and I am not entirely sure how long I have put up with the error message before I decided to try this forum. I have tried to figure out what the file is, and none of my friends who are handy with a computer know what it is. The error message reads "Error loading C:\WINDOWS\ewizicifaquza.dll The specified module could not be found." when I put the file name in google, google doesn't come up with anything, it says that the file matches nothing.

I am running Windows XP Professional edition. This error occurs at start-up, every time I boot up my computer. I would assume that this is a module found under the svchost files, but I cannot be sure. I want to know what the file is, and I want to know what it is supposed to do. I am so confused. Thanks for your time.

A:Unknown File Error - Google doesn't recognise this file name

Hello,Such messages are common after the removal of malware files. To resolve this, download Autoruns, search for the related entry and then delete it.Create a new folder on your hard drive called AutoRuns (C:\AutoRuns) and extract (unzip) the file there. (click here if you're not sure how to do this.)Open the folder and double-click on autoruns.exe to launch it.Please be patient as it scans and populates the entries. When done scanning, it will say Ready at the bottom.Scroll through the list and look for a startup entry related to the file(s) in the error message.Right-click on the entry and choose delete.Reboot your computer and see if the startup error returns.Orange Blossom

If the image files you're unable to open were obtained via download to a folder name that includes certain special characters (for example, the symbols seen in "【Pictures】") this creates a file path that, although acceptable to the operating system, is not recognized properly by IrfanView (or other apps), yielding the somewhat misleading "Can't Read File Header, Unknown file format" message (should really say "File Not Found"). Simple solution is to rename the download folder, or move the image files to another directory with a name that's recognized properly by IrfanView. Hope this helps some who are encountering this confusing error!

Hello:

I managed to download a virus, malware or whatever from a fake site: hxxp://microsoftmedicenter.com/pluginerror/

Maybe somebody can go to that site and tell me what I have got myself into...

Anyways, after realizing that I made this mistake, I ran Symantec Antivirus (month old definitions), which quarantined the following:
1. jar_cache7190243559420621033.tmp - "still contains 3 infected items"
2. myf/y/PayloadX.class
3. myf/y/LoaderX.class
4. myf/y/AppetX.class

In the meantime, I have no desktop taskbar or icons, and cannot right click on the desktop. I can use my pointer and Task Manager to run some programs. I have tried numerous things, with no luck. I can't connect to the internet with that computer, or run a Restore. Through Task Manager or the cmd prompt I have run another Symantec full scan (nothing), cmd mrt.exe (no problems), cmd sfc/scannow (nothing), cmd explorer ("access denied"), iexplore (doesn't work). I was able to download to the thumb new Symantec virus definitions, then load on infected computer, which seemed to go fine, but when I open Symantec it still shows an older definition file date. I tried Free Windows Registry Repair 2.0, lots of errors found, fixed them, no luck. I tried file system check, no problems. I tried other virus scanners, all of which come up with no viruses, so maybe Symantec got them quarantined, and now we just have to repair the damage??

Hi Guys - Gals

I am hoping if there is a possibility to help me out on a problem or two im having. First off the easy one :)

I have an unknown file which I have on my main drive.C:\unknown. This only shows up when i use WinDirStat,im sure you have heard of this utility that shows you the size and where abouts on your drive all your files are. The file shows on the utility as "Unknown" and changes size regular from 18gb to 6gb which is alot of space to go AWOL. So im thinking maybe its a system file but i cannot navigate to it through WinDirStat (this is the only file it wont navigate to), through explorer, even if i set the folder options to show all hidden folders and system files, or through cmd. Im an average user so maybe ive missed something obvious.

The second problem is also a file on my hard drive which i cannot remove. If i try to delete it then explorer restarts. The file is 3.4TB...yes TB which cannot be as my drive is only 240Gb. the file is named "..." which is inside my downloads folder. Inside the file is a duplicate of everything including the "..." that is in the downloads folder. And inside that is the same. This goes on and on and seemingly never ends. I have visited a few forums about similar problems but still cannot resolve it. I have also tried a few utilities such as "kill box" but no joy. I just want rid of it. Any suggestions on how to delete the bugger for good?

Hello Everyone,

I have kind of an odd question, I have been looking into changing file type icons when I came across an interesting conflict.
I would like to be able to change the file type icon for all .exe files to the same file type icon within a file explorer. If you were to try to do this, all icons that are associated with each .exe program becomes the same icon no matter where they are located.

The thing is that usually when I am in a file explorer the .exe files are installers and when I have .exe files in places like on my desktop, in the start menu, and in the taskbar, they are for launching already installed programs.

Can anyone think of a possibly way that could solve this conflict easily with some kind of setting or software.

I thought maybe something with shortcuts but that turned out to not work for me.
I also believe that .ico icon files have multiple sizes within them but I don't think there would be a realistic way to edit each of them for all the programs installed.

Has anyone else ever tried something like this? or have any solutions that I am not aware of?
Thank You

A:Changing .exe File Type Icons In File Explorer But Nowhere Else

File Explorer is on Windows 8/8.1, renamed from Windows Explorer on Windows 7 back to Windows95/Windows NT4.

Usually an .exe file for running a program will have its own icon, right-click a Shortcut, Properties, Change Icon to see what the .exe file has in it. Some programs may have a separate icon in their Folder in C:\Program Files or C:\Program Files (x86). If no icons are found Windows will put up a panel with a number of choices but they are more generic, mostly for Windows things.

Installable .exe files will have more of a generic icon and are of only a few types.

If you're still having trouble after installing iTunes again, download THIS.

Save the .reg file to your desktop. Double-click it to merge it to the registry.

Restart the computer.

If the fix only opens as a text file (in Notepad), right-click the file (before opening it) and select Open With > Choose Program... Then, select the Registry Editor.

If the Registry Editor is not in the list, browse to C:\WINDOWS and select regedit.

I don't know what happened. I wanted to open a .psd file in photoshop and I had two different versions, CS4 and CS5. I right clicked and opened with PS CS5. I don't know what happened after that. The first time it didn't work, I tried it again and then I noticed that all my icons on my task bar and in start menu are all the same. I open up firefox and it open photoshop instead. EVERYTHING IS PHOTOSHOP! I open the default program "open with..." again on an .exe file for some program this time and selected a different program from the list of open with... Now all the icons changed to that program's icon and all icons open up that program too just like photoshop.

I've reseached forums and stuff and found file association with the registry.

Some forum directed me to this: http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/fi...for-windows-7/

People who've had the same/similar problem to mines have found fixes there. But when I try to import those fixes to my registry I get an error message: cannot import w7_exe_fix. Not all data was written succesfully to the registry. Some keys are open by the system or other processes.

When I opened my computer today, there was an unknown shortcut on my desktop. The name under this file is ကuဘuပေါu with crescent-shaped accent marks over each u similar to the mark found over this ă.

Anyone have any idea what it is? Should I remove the file along with its shortcut? If so, where would I find the file in order to remove it?

My computer is a Compaq Presario with Microsoft Windows XP Version 2002, Service Pack 3.

Thank you in adavance for your help. It is much appreciated!

Hello, if you right click on it is there an option to scan it with your Antivirus?

If you right click on it and select Properties, then Details, does it say anything?
