"no disk in drive" error message in Media Center

Q: "no disk in drive" error message in Media Center

When I go to the Winows XP Media Center I get the error message "There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive \Device\Harddisk1\DR3.".

When I first set up Media Player about 8 months ago I got this error message and doing a search I was able to find a fix. Then I had a problem about a month ago and reformatted my hard drive and did the same thing and found a fix.

Well, just had to reformat again and now I can't remember where I found the fix. Can someone help me?

Thanks! Oh - and BTW can someone tell me how I can find where the programs that I recored are stored.

Help! I keep getting the message "Disk is full. TV can't play because the hard disk you chose in Settings is full. Clear space on this drive or choose another drive." The problem is I have lots & lots of free space left on my drive( like 120GBs) I use a HP Media center pc, & have contacted their support several times, it always boils down to " do a non-destructive recovery" & then "do a destructive recovery" These both work for a little while & then it all starts over again. I haven't been able to identify any new software, etc. that might be causing the problem. Any ideas out there??

My computer persistantly displays this error message saying "Windows - No Disk: There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive." When I look at the My Computer screen It shows my floppy drive, my C drive, the unknown Removable Disk Drive (D:), CD drives E and F, my other internal drive (G:), my external (H:), the second partition on my internal drive (I:), a DVD drive (J:), and then finally the second unknown Removable Disk Drive (K:). I have no idea what these Removable disk drives are or how they got here but I think they are causing the problem. Windows thinks there is a disk mounted but there isnt. If it helps the applications I was using at the time of when the incident first began was Azureus, my DVD drive, Divx Player, iTunes, and maybe some more random stuff. This error message pops up whenever I open multiple programs such as iTunes and Azureus. I could REALLY use some help with this as it is starting to become very annoying!

A:Keep getting error message saying "There is no disk in the drive"

right click on my computer then manage. click on disk management and see what it specifies K:\ as. you can right click and goto properties to get a list of drives attached and maybe it'll give you more specs on this removable drive.

is is possible you installed some software from a removable disk (like a usb key) and the software you are running is looking for the source media? it's possible this new drive has nothing to do with the windows error

I reformatted my computer recently, with all the same hardware and software I usually do, but this time I noticed something different.

On my E: partition (non-system), there is a folder called "9ca233a934811ecf86022b48e5" which contains two folders: "AMD64" and "i386".

I researched a little bit, and found out those folders pertain to a windows 64-bit edition, but I don't have anything to do with a 64-bit edition, mine's a 32-bit.

Here's my system specs:WinXP Media Center Edition Version 2002 SP3
Intel Core 2 Duo Processor E6300
NVidia GeForce 7600 GS 512MB
ST3300831AS 300GB HD
I have my HD partitioned to 3 drives:14GB System Drive (C:)
40GB Document Drive (D:)
190GB Storage Drive (E:)
I also have 40GB partitioned as an Acronis True Image Home Secure Zone, for storing Disk Images.

I was wondering why those two folders are on my E: drive, when I'm running a 32-bit version of Windows. Also, (sorry if this should be in another thread) my computer has been restarting unexpectedly while I've just been doing random things on it. Nothing graphics-intensive, or anything like that, so I don't know why it's doing that either.

Thanks for your help and time,

A:"AMD64" and "i386" folders on WinXP Media Center 32-bit edition

It sounds like those are temporary files from a driver installation. A lot of companies seem to package every possible driver in the zip or executable, extract them all to the hard drive, find the one the system needs and copy it to the system32 directory, then leave the rest behind.

In that case they should be safe to delete. It would take a bit more research on your part to make sure. Maybe a readme or help file somewhere in the directory?

Ok, I built a PC a month ago and everything seemed find no problems of any sort. The other night I defragmented my hard drive and shut it down and turned it on today to a memory test and the message "Disk Boot Failure, Insert system Disk and press enter"

The computer has access to the XP pro w/ sp2 disk only as a boot device but it will not recognize it now.

I have set Cd-rom as 1st for boot sequence then hard drive I have no floppy drive and the bios has been configured to know that.

I am not sure if this means anything but in the bios the IDE Channel 0 Master says none and when I try to turn on auto detection it wont detect a hard drive.

The HDD is fully connected and has not been touched since I installed it a month ago.

I have this awful feeling that I fried the HDD when I defragmented it last night.

Any help would be very much appreciated. But please be simple this is my first build and my knowledge at this sort of thing is very very sketchy at best.

A:Error message "Disk Boot Failure, Insert system Disk and press enter" on first build

The first thing to do would be to get a new data cable for the herd drive and see if that fixes it, they are nice and cheap nowadays.

I'm a new poster here and I discovered the forum while searching for a solution to a problem that I am having with my Windows Security Center being turned off.

This is the last symptom of a problem that I noticed about a week ago. At that time my Google searches in Firefox were being hijacked to other sites on a pretty consistent, but not 100% basis. Google searches in other browsers, IE9 and Chrome still worked. Also my System Restore functions had been monkeyed with so they looked like that was not working (wouldn't open) but I could tell that it was actually working and the error message was spurious.

I was able to restore the Google search functionality in Firefox AND get system restore back by installing and running SUPERAntiSpyware. That program found several bits of malware and apparently fixed most/some of them. (Yes, I purchased a copy immediate--out of gratitude, if nothing else!). I also own a copy of Anti-MalwareBytes and ran that, but it found nothing.

I thought I was good to go, but today I noticed the little flag icon in the system tray was red X'd and I discovered the error message about the Security Center is turned off. I tried going to the service center and turn it on, but same error. I tried opening the list of services and there is none for Windows I'm assuming some malware has either removed or disabled the files in there.

As I mentioned I came here via Google search and read a long thread about a similar probl... Read more

A:Error message: "The Windows Security Center is Turned Off"

After posting my message above, I continued to Google around and found a page with directions about restarting the security service. I guess I'm not SUCH a "savvy PC user" after all, as I had missed the exact name of the service and I reported it missing above.

I re-enabled and then restarted it and it seems to be functioning again.

Thanks for anyone who read the entire message and my apologies for wasting your time if you did.

First time here and posting, but this site often comes up near the in Googling for help, and I (and MS support) would appreciate your knowledge here.

On my PC there is no "play with" or "Send to" menu for the optical drive in my PC under W/8.1, though it recognizes the DVD in it, and both VLC player and Jet Audio have added themselves to the right click menu.

I can play the DVD using Windows Media Center (C:\Windows\ehome\ehshell.exe) if i launch it first, but would like to add it to a play with menu, or even have a send to menu for that drive.

Believe it or not, MS tech support ( 1-800-642-7676) has spent hours (free so far) in 3 different remote sessions trying to do this, the first of other issues i called about, and is due to call again (then they go to remote) at 5.30, but as this should not be the hard, i thought you all would know how to do it. (You can then send them the bill!)

I have search regedit for "Play with," "media center," "ehshell.exe," and can see that VLC player added a Open key to play with VLC player and a command subkey pointing to the app, but have found nothing that i could figure out how to do the same for "media center," "ehshell.exe."

Note that this is not a big deal as i can play the DVD by launching the Media Center first (which i put a shortcut to in My Computer by using RightClick Extender), but apparently MS forgot to add a "play wit"h menu to the opti... Read more

I have goggled potential fixes and can't seem to find anything that will work.

Any help would be appreciated,

A:Media Center "no tuner available error"

MCE 2005 requires an Analog/NTSC TV tuner adapter to be present before it will allow a digital tuner to be detected. Check that a Analog/NTSC TV tuner is installed and working.
The ?MCE Rollup 2? update is required:
Microsoft Download Center

According to their Setup Guide Quickstart Guide ? HDHomeRun DUAL MCE required that there is a analog TV tuner installed on the computer before it will recognize the Digital Tuner. Try updating the MCE Rollup and see if that helps. Or post in Siliconsdust's Forum

I know this question has been asked before as I've read about it all over the Internet. In order to get rid of the 'Low Disk Space' message it says to go to the registry and locate HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies \ Explorer, type a new value, etc. The only problem is I don't have an Explorer key. It ends at Policies.

I've tried everything. I've tried creating the key myself, and I've tried inserting the value into the policies folder. Nothing has worked. Can anyone help?

I have Both Window XP (C:/) and Vista Premium (E:/) on my system.

Sometimes when I run vista i get a message say something like this: "Disk E:/ is corrupt, run chkdsk on the drive to resolve issues" After a reboot the chkdsk utily runs before it opens vista and fixes any issues, but i get the same problem a few days later.

Any Ideas?

A:constant message "Disk E:/ is corrupt, run chkdsk on the drive to resolve issues"

I'd be testing both the RAM and the hard drive. Vista is really good at stressing out a system and may show issues when XP was fine, as was the case with XP versus 98.

To test the memory I'd use:

Then find out what brand of hard drive you have, probably will show you in Device Manager, and use the manufacturer's diagnostics to test it.

Another cause could be the drivers for the motherboard. Have you installed any chipset drivers? What motherboard do you have?

Recently, an error message "Windows detected a hard disk problem" always pop ups in my monitor.

I have done "Error Checking" also " Defragmentation"...but that error message doesn't disappear.

What should I do?

Thanks a Lot.

A:Error message " Widows detected a hard disk problem"

That is not a most welcome message.

I would immediately backup the most important personal data and run the DOS version of Manufacturer's Diagnostic Utility. If it passes without any event reported, fine. But if it finds bad sectors and even if it repairs it, be wary. Not to be taken aback by any catastrophic failure that may occur unannounced, always backup all your personal data and also image your system regularly.

Please open an elevated command prompt.
When you have the command promt open please enter the following command:
sfc /scannow and press enter.
After the scan is 100% and the scan did repair files please restart your computer.

Please re-open an elevated command prompt and enter the following command:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt

The cbs.log file will be posted on the Desktop as the current user, named sfcdetails.txt. Please attach this file in your next post.

This problem is making me crazy:

I am trying to copy some files to a CD Disk, so that I can open them on a different computer. I have put a disk in the drive, highlighted the file, clicked on "send to", and I get the message: "Please insert a disk into Drive E (or F, whichever I happen to try it with)".

The drives won't recognize that there is a blank CD. If I put in an audio CD or a DVD, it recognizes it, and plays it fine. It's just the blank ones that are giving me a problem. I have tried several different brands of CD . . . same result . . . "Please insert a disk into drive".

Does ANYONE have a remedy for this problem, or a suggestion? Any help will be appreciated.

FYI : My computer is a Dell 8300, running Windows XP. My drives are an NEC CD-RW and a Samsung DVD-ROM.

A:Can't Copy to CD . . "No Disk In Drive" Message

Stupid question.
Are you putting the blank CD in the NEC device?

Open "my computer".
RIGHT click the NEC drive
Left click "properties"
Left click the "recording" tab.
Is the box "enable recording on this drive" checked?

When did the problem begin?
Can you associate the onset of the problem to the addition or removal of hardware or software, to include an update to Windows or your antivirus program? Have you run a registry cleaner recently? I am NOT suggesting that you run a reg cleaner.

Have you EVER been able to burn files on this computer, using this NEC drive.

Basically, to be successful, you need the correct combination of burner / device, optical disk, software.
Are you using CD - R disks? Which brand & model?

Which optical disk are you using?

Which disk burning software is on your computer? Which disk burning software has EVER been installed on your computer?

How to troubleshoot CD playing problems.
I realize that your problem is burning, but many of the concepts are the same.

Yesterday when I switch on my computer, it automatic diskcheck on my E disk. I have 3 HDD, which is C: (My main partition, installed Windows on this HDD), D: is for all my game files (Installed games) and E: is for all my music, movies, game installer, software etc.

So back to the point, when I switch on my computer, and get to the "Windows is Starting", and it stuck right there for about 5-10 minutes. Firstly, I have no patient so I restated the computer, and second or third time also have the same problem. So I choose to wait patiently, after 5-10 minutes, it have a black screen for about 1 to a few minutes, then it started the disk check on my E drive.

Almost the whole process I get these message which worried me, and I wonder if my hard disk is failing badly and unable to recover.
It continues to finish the process and attempt to fix the bad sector. And after that it successfully log onto Windows, so I can use it normally again.

A:Hard disk is failing? Error message"File record segment is unreadable"

The "File record segment xxx is unreadable" error is an indication of failing hard drive. You should backup the data from this drive before it's too late.

Next, run some diagnostic testing on the failing hard drive; most HDD manufacturers have the diagnostic software available from their website. Software from Seagate will work with most brand.

If this drive would be mine, I'd just get a new one, the drive certainly will not get better...

Hi, I'm having some trouble in the GIMP, especially when opening or saving files. Going to the C: drive goes fine, but when I go to a following directory, I get the "No Disk" error message, telling me to insert a disk into "the" drive. Whichever that may be.

If that were all, it wouldn't have been a great deal. But whichever button I press in the error message, it just pops up again. And again, and again, and again... This is seriously bad for one's nerves. Of course, I tried to click very rapidly, and eventually it does stop, if you're lucky enough not to click once too many. Because chances are you click on the save or load dialog, then the message pops up, and you can start all over again! I tell you, it's only a matter of time before I have a mental breakdown.

I was actually uncertain as of in which forum to post, as I suspect this could be a Windows problem as well. You see, whenever I stick a USB stick into my computer, the drive letter assigned to it isn't the next one unused. Instead, it skips one. So perhaps my computer thinks there's one more drive - one without a disk in it - while there really isn't. That's just an idea though.

I'm using Windows XP SP2, GIMP 2.2.10 and GTK 2.8.9. Both are the latest version, and there is no mention of a "No Disk" message in GIMP's Bugzilla.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, of course!

In Photoshop go to File\Preferences\Memory & Image Cache, and set the value of used by Photoshop to 50%. Restart Photoshop. Or if you have another drive, set the Scratch Disk to be on another drive.

We are having a problem on a Windows XP Pro SP2 machine running Windows media player 10. It says "this version of media player is incompatible" when you try and open it. We have tried removing version 10, and putting on 9 but you get the same problem. This happens if you download the install file from the website or install WMP from the WindowsUpdate site. Has anyone come across this before, or got any ideas on how to get WMP to work?

Thanks a lot,

A friend has an old Pentium 1 HP Vectra 500 PC. On startup it says "Invalid system disk" like if you had a disk in the floppy drive. There is no disk in the CD or A drive. I took the A drive and CD out of the boot sequence via the bios and it made no difference. Is it the hard drive?

Had a sudden inability to go much further than a third or forth-level download on ANY given webpage and then PC would seize-up, requiring "cont+alt+del" in order to get freed-up. Thought perhaps I picked-up a bug of some sort during a recent google search, and went immediately to Panda and Trendmicro to perform both virus as well as malware scans. While the Panda scan was loading-up, I received the following error message....

... " DoPatch....dll reports error....Error "C:\WINNT\patch.utp"....unreadable or not a patch file..."

Was able to complete both scans. Nothing found other than tracking cookies.

I then did a file serch for the above and located it. It was installed TODAY apparently, and not by me, within minutes of the problem starting.

I'm guessing someone/thing slipped this patch into my WINNT file or modified it while I was doing the google search, so I have included a HJT scan below.

Hope this all makes sense and ties-out to something. Any help would be genuinely appreciated-

Hello, TSG!

Just yesterday I was using the computer normally until I got a Blue Screen. Getting a blue screen is usually something normal that occurs to my every so often, so I didn't mind it and rebooted the computer normally. However, I got two more blue screens within the next hour. The 3rd time rebooting, my computer starts to act strange as if it had a virus. Upon powering up the monitor would just display a black screen with two lines about something --- which I don't remember, sorry --- and stayed like that unless I plugged out the power cord or held on the power button to shut down. Then when after a few tries it boots and displays a message "Floppy Disk Failure" and "Drive 1 not found: Serial ATA, SATA-1" (and the same message for Drives 2 and 3) show up. Also it asks me to continue loading by pressing the F1 Key.

When Windows loads the first time, it displays a message saying a bunch of hardware has just been installed and ready for use. Also, my internal clock resetted itself back to Monday, November 07, 2005 (Which, if I recall, is the date when I got the computer) and my speakers do not work.

TL;DR Version
3 blue screens within a short time
Floppy disk fail
Drivers 1-3 not found: Serial ATA, SATA-1-3

Anyway, I browsed through Google but I haven't seen anyone with both problems. I disabled my Floppy Disk Drive and that message doesn't show up anymore, but the others do and my computer still isn't fixed. I ran a vir... Read more

I am going 'round & 'round with this issue. I log on as limited user account for security. However, when I am on that acct, I cannot copy files to the external HP drive - I have to switch over to the admin user account to do so. In order to use the limited account for this operation, I have read that you should disable simple file sharing, (on admin acct), then rt clik on the file u want to copy - this then opens a menu with security tab where you are supposed to be able to give full control to the limited acct for that file. My admin acct that brings up this menu has those boxes to check grayed out. Also, do you have to rt click and give full permission for any file that you want to copy? (once you have this all figured out) - Seems a bit cumbersome. Any ideas anyone?? Thanks.

I just put together a brand new haswell gaming rig and installed windows 7.
Long story short, I copied the contents of my windows 7 installation disc into an internal SATA drive (1600BEVT-22ZCT0) and installed windows onto another internal SATA drive (ST3160215AS).
My problem is that in order to access the windows installation in ST3160215AS I have to boot into 1600BEVT-22ZCT0 and then select Windows 7.
If I boot directly into ST3160215AS then I get the error message "BOOTMGR is missing".
How can I fix this and boot directly into the drive windows is installed in (ST3160215AS)?

I've tried the commands bootrec /rebuildbcd, bootrec /fixmbr and bootrec /fixboot but they keep using the MBR stored in 1600BEVT-22ZCT0 without ever creating an MBR on the ST3160215AS drive.
I don't have an optical drive on the rig and the only way I can transfer information to and from the rig is by removing the 1600BEVT-22ZCT0 internal drive and connecting it to my laptop.

Sorry for the long post.
Thanks in advance for helping

On one system I am getting this error message once every day or two. The hard drive has over 300GB available. The verbatim error message shows nothing in Google.

It reads:
"The space on the hard drive is running low. Currently only xMB is free. Please free space by deleting unused files."

Now it shows 71MB free. Any thoughts?

A:Error Message "The space on the hard drive is running low" isn't true

so do you have 300 gb? or only 71 mb? because if its 71 mb, u have got some major cleaning to do. I doubt that though, some viruses clutter the hard drive. If you have plenty of room, and your still getting the message then you can follow these instructions to remove the annoying message.

2. go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

I recently had a new computer built for me. When I tried to load a new game "F.E.A.R." using the DVD, I received the error message D:\not a valid Win32 application. When I replaced the game with the CD-ROM version I was able to load the game no problem. I can use the drive to burn CDs, DVDs, watch movies, etc. Last night I loaded a game disk on my virtual E: drive using Daemon Tools. If your machine won't read CDs (but can eg, play DVDs) and gives a "prepare this blank disc" error message, there is probably a driver conflict. After several warranty calls to Dell, much good advice, updating drivers and firmware, and installing a new CD Drive (Optiarc) it would work for a bit then crash again.

After a bit more research - see the closed thread at 'Prepare This Blank Disc' Problem, which is useful but failed, I decided to uninstall Roxio 9, which unfortunately came preinstalled.

Make sure every reference to Roxio is deleted. Search the computer and registry. Maybe uninstall the CD drive and reinstall, reboot, then it may work. Mine did! I then installed ImgBurn which does a fine job of copying CDs.

All other options (eg, relating to upper and lower filters) failed in my case. I think the problem started with Vista Business SP1 install. Good luck.

I have four external drives (FAT32) and opened Partition Magic a couple of days ago. It said one drive was "BAD". MS Disk Administrator says drive is "Healthy".

I am able to access this drive through Windows Explorer and do anything I want with the data. This appears to be a false reading by Partition Magic but I am not completely convinced of this because it has been such a good program for many years.

Do you think I have a failing drive?

A:Partition Magic says drive "BAD". Disk Administrator says "Healthy"

I wouldn't trust either program. Find out the manufacturer of the hard drive and download their hard drive diagnostics. The manufacturer's own tests should give you a much better idea if its in good shape or not.

I recently bought a brand new Hewlett Packard computer. It prompts you to back up your files and gives you the option of selecting the backup drive 'd' or writing to dvd. I selected writing to the backup drive.

The system tried to backup my files but sent an error message 'recovery drive full' It continues to prompt me to backup my files.

I solved this problem by going to the HP website, clicking on 'troubleshooting' and entering the details of my computer. I then found an FAQ somehow.

The page explained that I had been wrong to select the d drive to back up my files (how foolish of me to choose one of two options offered.) It said that the D drive was only small. I must delete the file already created there and then change the settings to create a backup onto a dvd drive instead.

You delete the backed up copy of the file by going to start/computer/HP recovery d/ where the first folder you will find will be one with the name of your computer eg. in my case Anna-PC. You then delete this file.

You then go to start and type 'backup' in the search box. Select 'backup and restore center' then 'change settings' then 'change backup settings' then give your permission to continue, then select 'DVD rw drive e' which describes itself as 'on a hard disc, cd or dvd' .

I wondered if there had been some sort of design error. Why did they give me that option i... Read more

Actually what concerns me more is, I wonder if you have deleted files in your recovery partition.
It's usually hidden from inside Windows, so I expect no. But by chance did you receive a Windows CD or just a recovery partition (because the recovery files may now be gone)

As for the location, think of it this way, it will show all areas that you can backup to. I think even the floppy drive (if you have one) this is to give you the full choice, instead of putting restrictions on your own computer (which most don't like)

That's why.

I have a new Gateway laptop and all last week I was using it to connect to my home pc using Remote Desktop. I noticed a few times that after shutting the lid to the laptop and walking away when I would come back and open the lid the laptop would be froozen. I wonder if it was becuase I was leaving the remote desktop connection open and then the laptop would go into sleep mode and it woudnlt wake up properly?? Either way the only way I could unfreeze it was by restarting the lapt by forcing it to power down. Well, the last time it happened after I held the power button and forced a shut down when I powered it back on it said "Disk Read Error". I have yanked the drive and connected it via usb to my dekstop pc. The drive shows up in disk management but has a red circle in the top left hand corner of the partition and doesnt' show up in my computer. I put the drive back in the laptop and booted of an XP CD and choose the "repair" option. I tried to do a "MIXMBR" but got a return message that NO partition could be found. Does anyone have any ideas how I can recover from this?? I have Acronis disk director suite installed on my desktop pc and I can reconnect my laptop hard drive to the desktop pc but I don't know if it can do the job. Does anyone have any ideas I really can't afford to loose my data. Please Help.

A:SATA Laptop Hard Drive "Disk Read Error"

This thread can be closed as #1 the issues has been resolved and #2 it doesn't look like anyone will be repying anyways.

Now, in the case that someone does stumble onto this thread here is an update....
Turns out the hard drive was physically damaged (or so I'm told). Since there was sensitive data on the drive I was being extra cautious and after removing the drive and connecting to another pc and seeing the drive but not the partitions or data I didn't even try FixMBR or anythinhg else becuase I didn't want to take the chance of further damage. I took the drive to a data recovery specialst who was able (for a small fee ofcourse) to recover the data. Since the laptop is still under warranty I took it into the store I bought it and told them the sit. Tehy gave me a new hard drive on the spot and I have now restored it back to normal. Thank You all and goodnight.

My laptop is having problems with reading USB flash drives and recognizing iPod nano.

When I plug in a USB flash drive or iPod, Windows assigns a drive letter, eg. Removable Disk F: but if I try to open in Windows Explorer I get an error eg. :"The disk in Drive F is not formatted. Do you want to format it now?"

I've tried different USB sockets on the laptop- same problem. The flash drive and iPod work fine on all other computers so it seems local to this laptop and I can't see any reason to format it.

I am using a Lenovo 3000 N200 laptop running XP SP3. To attempt to rectify this problem, I reverted to SP2 using c:\windows\$NtServicePackUninstall$\spuninst\spuninst.exe

Following this, I was able to access files on the flash drive for a few moments but when I attempted same with the iPod, I got a Windows crash and following the restart am back to square one, with neither flash drive nor IPod being usable except windows XP remains at SP2.

Anyone have any clues to what might be going on?? Thanks for any pointers.

Long story short, I had XP installed on a SATA drive that did (and still does) boot from a SATA port in "IDE Mode". I removed the drive and put it in a USB enclosure. I can access the drive & files just fine but can't boot XP. Instead, I get the following error:

"A disk read error has occurred.
Press Ctrl-Alt-Del to restart."
Is there a way to boot an existing installation of XP from a USB enclosure without reinstalling XP?

Long version: I upgraded to a SSD drive with Win7, but had to switch to "AHCI mode" to use it. I have six SATA-II ports, but can only set two to "IDE Mode". I have my old installation of Win7 on one and my BD optical drive on the other (allowing me to boot either). XP will NOT boot when plugged into an AHCI port, but will if I plug it into one of the two Sata/IDE ports.

For some inexplicable reason, connecting BOTH my XP and Win7 HDD's at the same time I'm using Win7 on my SSD causes the computer to bog-down every 30-60 seconds for two minutes at a time making the computer unusable (I never had this problem before the SSD). If I unplug EITHER HDD (Win7 or XP), the problem goes away. But my Win7-hdd drive is larger and I'm still migrating to the SSD, so I need that drive plugged into one of the SATA/IDE ports.

I removed the XP drive and put it into a USB enclosure. Problem solved (kinda). I can access all my files, but I can't boot XP (and I must switch off the driv... Read more

Hey guys, I need one of you hardware geeks to help me here. I finally bought the Maxtor DiamondMax10 hard drive. Its SATA 300 Gig with a 16 Meg Cache and NCQ. I already have a SATA WD Raptor as my main drive and trying to install this one has a data drive. I have an Asus PW5D2 Premium Board.

When I boot up, it takes a long time (about a minute) to do anything than I eventually get a "Hard disc error" and I have to hit F1 to continue. The BIOS recognizes the drive, but Windows does not. I've swapped out the cable and tried a different controller, same result. While I have like 10 hard drives laying around, they are all PATA--no SATAs to try.

I think the drive is damaged. I downloaded Maxtor's PowerMax, but its worthless--goes through some tests and the inital ones pass and later ones fail, but its the same thing on the other drive (the Raptor) and that one works fine. Tells me eventually to contact Maxtor Tech Support on both drives!

Any ideas?

This is kinda long and I've fixed it, but could use your input.

So after waking up, my parents informed me that the computer was shutting down randomly. I turned it on and "a disk error occurred press ctrl+alt+del to restart " appeared. It's a Sata hard drive so I checked the cables to make sure they were plugged in correctly and they were, and then I tried connecting it to another computer with that computers cables and that didn't work either.

My parents not wanting to buy one online, decided to just go to bestbuy and buy one there, since we already had the Windows 7 Disk at home. I formatted it, partitioned it, and installed Windows 7 Home Premium on it and everything worked. I decided to connect the Hard drive that didn't work while the computer was still on, and it immediately started downloading the drivers it needed and up popped all the hard drive. I'm going to start transferring all the important things like music,videos and games, and after, all I can see are the following 3 things;

after getting all the data we want off it, should I reinstall windows to see if my other computer will recognize it (Even though it couldn't before), format it and just use it as extra data (though since it already couldn't boot up, the ability to keep data on it may fail in a couple of days/weeks) or just put it away and not use it at all.

What would you guys reccomend I do?

A:Hard Drive, "a disk error occurred press ctrl+alt+del to restart "

First get the data you need off it.

Then go to the mfr and get their HD testing utility and run it.

If it were me I wouldnt trust it. I have been burned before.

You certainly could use it for storage of, say one set of backups, for the chances of losing your OS HD, and that backup at the same time are nil.

My Windows 7 configuration is relatively bullet proof (ha ha, nervous laughter).

My OS and programs are on C, which I image using RDriveImage every month after Patch Tuesday.

My data is on software-mirrored D/F drives.

So as long as I don't have a catastrophic event affecting my computer, a routine "drive failure" should be recoverable, with the worst-case being I'd be out a month of updates, but with a good recent image of the OS drive.

Anyway, I was recently looking at my event viewer and I have "Disk errors" that occur whenever I run a full image of C.

Try going into your BIOS to see what it has to say about the drive. Some BIOS's can read the drive's SMART status and can run tests on it. You could also download the disk manufacturer's drive diagnostics to check it out. Or see what Seatools (from Seagate) has to say about it:

When I go to open a program I've recently installed, half way through loading I'll get an error message reading:

The drive is not ready for use; its door may be open. Please check drive A: and make sure that a disk is inserted and that the drive door is closed." Cancel, Try Again, and Continue, to which I press continue to.

Then I get "There is no disk in the drive. Please insert disk into drive \Device\Harddisk1\DR1" with Cancel, Try Again, and Continue, to which I press Continue to and another appears but with \Harddisk2\DR2 and so on. After pressing continue to 1 2 3 and 4, the program continues to load fine.

After doing some google searching I see suggestions about renaming the troublesome drive something other than C (apparently this error happens when 2 drives are called C) but there is no drives involved? its just a program, so theres nothing to change, does anyone have any ideas as to why these errors appear? :S

I have a card reader for use on a USB Port. I have been using Windows 7 Starter since July 2010. I used the card reader successfully in November 2011. Now all of a sudden I am getting this error: Please insert disk in drive F:" when I try to open the card reader. It is shown in "My computer" as removeable disk. When I check properties it shows the name "USB Card Reader". It also shows "0" space used and "0" space available.

I changed the designature letter from F: to Q, as adviced on some fora on the internet. This did not help. I have tried unstalling of the USB port and did whatever II could think of.

I checked the card reader on a Windows XP machine, and it is fine there. I can read the card reader with the camera.

The USB ports are also working fine. No problem in using pendrive or any other USB device.

I am using an antivirus named "F-Secure". This is provided by my ISP.

Still I want to use a card reader. Is there any remedy?-RDSharma

I tried on another pc but still got same error...can any one give me some solution for that...even if my data is not recovered, it will do but i need my pen drive back..Please HELP me..!

A:"Please insert disk" error in pen drive

This can happen if your flash drive tries to use a drive letter which is already assigned to another drive.

1) Insert your removable disk into the USB port.

2) Click Start, right click on Computer, then click on Manage.

3) Now, click Disk Management.

4) Right click on your removable drive partition and select Change Drive Letter and Paths under Disk Management

5)Change the drive letter to something like X: or Z: which is not reserved by some other drive on windows.

Jayda12 asked a question a while back.... I read with baited breath for the answer..... Still waiting.

I'm new to the SD card world. I'm trying to transfer pix from my phone. My computer has the slot. I put in the tiniest card w/the pix into the adapter and inserted into my SD port of computer. It found new hardware, etc, so I click on the new "SD Disk E:" under "My Computer"
I get the error message, "Please insert a disk into drive E:"

Ugh.... Help!

BTW... "UncleGooey" is because my little niece couldn't say "Uncle Gary."

A:SD drive: Error, "Please insert a disk..."

Meh, only thing I can suggest is has the disk been formatted with FAT/FAT32? Perhaps your phone has formatted the disk with a type of format that windows can't read, but I doubt it. You could try other disks to see if it's a fault with the slot or shell card you are using

I downloaded AVG spyware tool last niight and all worked well. When I booted up this morning I got a message on my desktop saying "no disk in drive: please insert disk" with the options "continue" "abort" "cancel". I hit cancel - no problem.

I noticed that AVG did not come on so I started it up manually and received the same error message. Hit cancel and all was ok. I tried a manual update and got the error message again.

I cannot update AVG without this message popping up. Any suggestions? This has happened a couple of times before but I don't remember whichh programs I was attempting to activate.

TIA for any suggestions!

Microsoft Updater says I have a critical update (KB2286198) to install but it fails and gives the message: "WindowsUpdate_80246007" "WindowsUpdate_dt000".

I've tried a couple of things that MS Support suggests but they don't work and don't seem to really apply to this particular error message. Searching for the error code 80246007 hasn't yielded anything yet that works.

Any ideas?

Hi all,
I recently reformatted my hand-me-down HP Media Center PC (m7640)
OS is Win XP Media Center Version 2002 Service Pack 2

(see above image for serial #, etc)
Using the recovery/reformat boot sector. HP seems to have used this drive sector (since HDD's never go bad...) in lieu of offering an OEM OS disk, but the perk is it install all of the drivers and pre-runs the windows setup steps for you. Problem is, it didn't get the graphics driver right. Every time you reboot it prompts you to install the drivers for your "video controller"

and if you do "search the computer/windows update" it finds nothing. The tower bears an NVIDIA sticker on the front, and if you go to the HP support page it tell you the download you need is for "NVIDIA GeForce 6150 LE Graphics Drivers" which is a file called "sp26796.exe"
When you run the downloaded file from HP it opens the standard NVIDIA install screen and runs through a quick step before aborting, notifying you that these drivers are not applicable to your hardware.

Did I wrongly the driver/video card? Is there a way to get just the .inf's (or cab's or whatever) so I can just tell the windows driver install that I "have disk" and can skip the issues with the NVIDIA GUI installer?

A:Solved: "Video Controller" drivers for HP Media Center m7640

Download and install the chipset driver (sp26802.exe), reboot then try to install the graphics driver.

I was looking for a solution to this, but found none. Not even close.
Im getting "TUNER NOT FOUND" message due to ehrecvr.exe service not being able to load. Why this happened I have no clue.

I am seeking an experienced person who might shed some light on the matter.

I have a problem like MANY, many others with Vista Media Center not recognizing our TV tuners after some time. (Yeh it was working perfect at clean install,...)

We know it is related to the fact the Windows Media Center Receiver Service cannot start.

Ive combed the net for any info regarding a fix for this, but failed to find any (found a gazzillion solutions for MCE 2005 tho).

After 5 Vista instalations it happens over and over again after a while. Doesnt matter what software we install, what codecs packages we use, there is no pattern I could dettect. VMC is soo darn sensitive. And help for this issue is not forthcomming from any source.

Needless to say im tired of repeated install after install of Vista, to watch TV in the Media center just to do it all over again after the service "crashes?!?".

Im begging for help for this pesky problem, please?

Soo far what I found/ruled out:
? Its not a driver issue, cause we used different TV tuners and they all had Vista MCE suppoort, and TV was working at clean install, even after codecs were applied.

? It could be 3rd party applications but we failed to pinpoint which one, cause people reporting this pro... Read more

My Vista PC keeps forgetting settings upon shutdown. I have 2 HDs and I wanted to put all the recorded tv shows on the second hard drive. I told media center to record to that drive and moved all of the previously recorded shows over to the second drive. I told VMCE to watch the new location instead of the old one. This worked at first, but when I restart it just says "No Recorded Shows" in Recorded TV. If I go to Add Recording or View Scheduled, and then go back, they 'magically' reappear...

I've also had problems with random freezing... I just added the second hard drive. I just installed it and then found it in disk manager and formatted it. I couldn't find a "master"/"slave" switch, but I have no problems with booting or accessing either hard drive. However, if I boot to the Vista CD and try to do a repair, it can't find the OS... It could before though... Aside from that, I installed two programs: DVD Shrink 3.2 and DVD Fab 5.

If I need to make a second thread for the second problem, that is understandable, but I think they may be related because they began at the same time...

Fortunately (or unfortunately) for me I have an MSDN account and had early access to SP1 for Vista. I installed it a few weeks ago and noticed one problem. In media center, everytime I go to "internet tv", media center crashes. It worked great before and I used to watch "Arrested Developement" on it all the time. The day I installed SP1 it stopped working and hasn't since. Any one else had this issue? Or anyone know how to fix it?

hello, i'm running windows 7 ultimate 64 bit and i'm trying to setup my tv signal on the windows media center. i have a hauppauge pvr150mce card who comes bundled with a microsoft ir transceiver including the ir blaster. when i run the tv signal setup wizard, after selecting the source, i get an error saying "ir hardware not detected". that is weird because the ir devices is installed and listed in the device manager ("consumer ir devices" under system devices and "mircosoft ehome infrared transceiver" under human interface devices). more than that, i can even use the remote within the media center application and it is fully responsive and working) but every time when i try to setup the tv signal i get the same weird error. because of that i can't even skip this stage and i can't setup tv signal on media center. i've already read any threa on the internet and tryed everything. uninstalled the devices and reinstalled them. connected the device in different usb ports, installed latest win7 updates from the hauppauge website. the hardware is listed in both the hauppauge website and microsofts as fully comaptible with win7. it also worked fine with vista. what can i do ???...

I'm attempting to set up Media Center for the first time on this PC (and the first time ever for me, too). As soon as I start Media Center for its setup, I get an error message that Media Center is unable to open Messenger and tells me to be sure Windows Messenger is installed on my system.

My wife has a two month old Lenovo ideapad with Windows 7. We are now getting alerts that the D partition is near full. Is this system taking multipul backups of the harddrive C and storing them all? What are my best options to have a safe backup, but not overloading the D partition? I do see in; Computer>System>Device Manager>Disk Drives>D Drive General tab that there are two options at the bottom.
option one, (not checked in my case) "Compress this drive to save disk space".
Option two, (checked) "Allow files on this drive to have contents indexed in addition to file properties"
Would selecting option one solve my problem? If this system is saving a snapshot of D over and over, it will only be a matter of time when option one will be overcome.
SO, I would think that there has to be a setting that will let partition D delete older backups...right?

Would it be a combination of selecting option one and changing a setting that would enable older backups to be automaticaly removed?

A:Action Center "Check backup disk space" alert

Welcome to the forum
If your D drive is made for backup's only, you can delete all files exept the newest one.
But it's advised to make backup's on an external USB drive and change the frequency of backup's to your files and olso for images to your OS.

I have added a SATA drive to my Vista machine that was once loaded with Win XP, the Device Manager does pick it up as well as Disk Management, but under Disk Management it states the drive is "Unknown" and "unreadable" I also do not have any options once I right click on the "Unallocated" area.

I just want this disk formatted and used as extra storage, I did load the Vista DVD and tried to load it on this disk but I got an error as well.

A:"Unknown" and "Unreadable" disk drive

Download and run the disk manufacturer's utility to partition and format this drive. That should find the drive and do the job for you.

You didn't say what brand of drive it was, so I can't point you to the utility, but you can find it with a search of the manufacturer.

In an emergency we recently purchased a computer at a local dealer. The system came with XP Media Center 2002 pre-installed and was put to use immediately instead of first installing our corporate version of XP Pro SP2. Since Media Center is not able to join a domain, we have tried to upgrade it to XP Pro SP2. However, none of our licensed CD keys work for an upgrade and we seem to be stuck with performing a clean installation . Since this machine is used for data acquisition on an instrument, we would like to avoid the downtime involved in re-installing and re-configuring all of the required software. Does anyone know of a way to perform this upgrade?

Thanks in advance...

But when i delete them some of these programs don't fully leave the computer, such as AOL browser and things like that. Is there anyway to really remove these from my hard drive?

You are going to have to be a little more specific.
Are you running XP Media center edition or Vista (which comes with media center)?
When you say that the programs don't fully leave your computer, what do you mean?
Can you still run them?
