The short version of my question is exactly what the topic says-- Can I install a Dell-provided OEM version of Vista on a non-Dell computer?

But, here's the wordier version giving context, if anyone's interested.

About 10 months ago, I guess, I got a Dell Vostro that came with Windows Vista Home Basic. However, I had no interest in Vista (because I already had a Windows machine) and the very first thing I did was install Ubuntu on it. I still have the Vista reinstall disk, though, which, to my memory, hasn't been used.

Now I'm planning on getting a barebones system and upgrading what I see fit. For the time being, I'm going to use the Windows 7 RC, but I'd like to get the uber-great upgrade deal that they're having to pre-order either the Business or Home Premium version upgrade. So, to do that, I'd need an XP installation or a Vista installation. Is there any reason, legal or software-related, that I wouldn't be able to install Vista using that disk that came with the Vostro?

I heard somewhere that sometimes if you try, it'll say something like "This is not a Dell computer, you evil, evil person" and refuse to install, so I wanted to make sure before I pre-ordered the upgrade. I don't want to get the upgrade and have nothing to upgrade, of course.

I have this old Dell Dimension L700cx that I am using. It currently runs as I am using it to type this. What I'm trying to do is restore it to make it look like it did when it was brand new. I have a 10 gig hdd in it, which I think it originally had a 20 gig, but I don't use that much hdd space. Anyway, I am trying to find the original wallpapers for it and the original manufacturer logo to go into system properties. I have tried to research it but all I come up with is memory, unfortunately, that isn't what I'm looking for. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Dell Optiplex GX620 computer, about 2 1/2 years old, has suddenly started running really slowly. I couldn't even open two web browser windows at the same time. I ran Malwarebytes' Antimalware, and it was running so slowly, I rebooted ran it in safe mode, no problems found, also no problems found by AVG 8.5 pro version.

I decided to do a chkdsk on it, and it found some bad sectors, after fixing that, a week later, I'm having to go through this all over again, more bad sectors.

I called Dell, (computer is still under warranty) they had me run diagnostics and I get a message "FAIL - Dell Hard Drive Diagnostic Return Code: 7"

They are telling me to reinstall the OS, but I'm not happy, that's a ton of work, considering all the software I'd have to reinstall on a failing drive???

Hello all, at my place of work, we have Dells and have had many problems. OS is XP. Have further complications in that these are for the public's use and are connected to a reserve system and it must communicate with the PC's before they are able to load. We contracted a virus and have been having problems ever since. Problems such as Spyware being loaded on some PC's although they all are on the same the program-they are all on a server and should not be individual enough to even allow Spyware download.

Plus, the reservation software has not been printing people's reserves for their PC. They have to come to the staff members so we can look up where their reserve is wheras before, a little slip would print off telling them where it was.
Anyone else have same problems or have ideas on what is going on?

Thanks

*its a Gateway laptop to clear things up lol*

Hello and thank you for viewing my problem . Anyway let me just start off by saying that I have little or no knowledge in fixing computers. And Ive bascially screwed my computer over twice i imagine lol

A week ago my computer started having problems. I installed a antivirus called avast to try and fix it. So anyway i let avast scan and just do its thing, it restarted and it showed me files that have been infected. It Gave me a bunch of options (i.e. delete, repair, move to chest) and i just unknowlingy screwed my computer up by just clicking delete all corrupted files.

Problems got worse everytime I tried launching my Google chrome and it suddenley blue screen.....But wait theres more....

I tried to fix it again by using a old program my grandfather had left on this old laptop I got from him. I used Norton Goback to see if it could restore the files I deleted. My plan was to restore the files from GoBack 2 days earlier (in theory), and use avast to rescan the infected files again and instead of deleting them, quaritine all of them. Hopefully I would think this would work.

Eventually I got sidetrack and would think that just wiping my laptop clean would just of been easier. I used instructions here:
http://www.wikihow.com/Reinstall-Windows-XP-Without-the-CD

Thinking everything would run smoothly I followed what it said, it restarted, ( I undoubtly cancelled it the first time because I wasnt sure) and gave me 2 options to load... Read more

Hi All,
Hoping someone can help. I have two Dell Pc's one upstairs one downstairs. A few months ago one of my computers just stopped booting. It would freeze about 10 seconds after you turn it on but I didn't use it very much so didn't bother trying to fix it. Now recently my hard drive as gone on one of my other Dells with a clicking hard drive sound which i know is fatal.

I have replaced it with the other drive from the other dell the one that froze and it seems to do the exact same as the other, just freezing with a black screen before it can show the XP splash screen. So I know this has got to be a hard drive problem as the same symptoms, however I have checked to see if the the computer can see the drive in the Bios and it can plus I have done some Maxtor hard drive diagnostics and has come up as Passed so i am at a loss to what it could be. The answer may be in Recovery Console, I have tried Fixboot and FixMBR but to no avail. Anyone have any ideas to what I could try.

Hi, I am having a problem booting to Window XP Home Edition sp1. I have a Dell 4600 Computer. It scenario went like this. My husband would sometimes get on the puter and it would hang after he logged on. The only way I could get out of it was to reset my APC UPS. Then it would reboot and I would get a blue screen. I would reboot again and It would be fine. Now this never happened when I logged on so I don't know what was up with that. I never upgraded to sp2 or 3. Maybe dumb but I make stationery for Outlook and Outlook express and build a few little web pages with applets and vbs scripts, so did not want the settings to mess with my applets on the upgrades. Now last night I stupidly decided to download a program called Driver Max. I figured maybe I should update any drivers that may be causing the freeze and blue screen. I ran it and it said there were about 8 drivers that it had new versions of so I started downloading. First was a hard disk controller driver. I made a system restore checkpoint. Then installed the driver and rebooted...or tried too. Of course, and went to hades in a handbasket real quick. It boots up to the black screen that gives me options how to start it.....safe mode, last know good config. etc. so I tried all to no avail. When I tried the safe mode it did the multi (0) disk (0) rdisk (0) partition (0) and the different boot ini files all the way down the page. So can anyone help? Also when I choose normal boot it gives me a blue... Read more

Hello everyone. I've opened many a computer to install new boards, drives, etc., but never ran across this problem. I have an old Dell Dimension computer ready to be discarded, but I would like to remove the hard drive first. I cannot find a way to open it. The back of the computer does not have the usual screws holding the case to the inside compartment. Instead it has many small round metal objects each with a hole in the middle. How do I open this thing?!!! Maggie

A:Solved: How to Open an Old Dell Dimension computer

There's likely buttons on the top and bottom that you press and it opens like it's hinged on the front.

Other models just have a latch that releases the side like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jsgynopUEiw

However that's just a guess as there are thousands of Dell Dimension models and you haven't mentioned which one you have.

Hello - i have recently purchased a new computer for office use. It is a HP PC. I didn't bother buying a monitor because i already have a Dell 22" wide-screen Monitor; however, when i plug it into the computer it doesn't recognize it is there and the monitor goes into 'sleep mode'. Please note that the computer doesn't have a dedicated graphics card, and only a VGA connector, so i have purchased a DVI to VGA connector in order to plug the monitor in.

Any help or referals will be appreciated, thanks.

Hi guys. I was wondering whether to buy a macbook or get a new video card for my Dell XPS 410. I am having such a hard time deciding because if I was to upgrade my Dell desktop I would have to upgrade both the PSU and GPU. I want to buy a 8800 GT. In total I would pay around 250-300 bucks for the PSU and Video card. On the other hand I want a macbook. I know that the new GPU and PSU would obviously be cheaper than the macbook. Do you guys think that I should wait before I buy either of these products, since new models may be coming out. I would really like to play games like Call of Duty 4, MOH Airborne and Gears of War. But I would like to also sit in bed any talk to friends and watch movies right on a macbook as well.

P.S. I currently have a 7900 GS.

I've got an old Dell that I'm trying to get running again but, every time I start it up it goes directly to BIOS. It regonizes my hard drive and all of my other hardware. When I exit out of BIOS it says that I have to replace jumper for settings to be saved. It is now safe to shut down your computer. I have tried booting from a Ubuntu live CD, another harddrive, I've replaced all the cables and I've tried using another power supply. Any help would help because I'm stumped.

Printer driver is installed and the printer does communicate at times with the computer and does a good job printing. However, intermittently when trying to print a document I'll get a message on the computer that says that communication has been lost and print job failed. I've checked all connections to make sure they are solid and no debris that might cause this. That has not corrected the problem. The other thing that happens is that the document I want to print will stay in the print queue/spooler and if I shut the computer and printer down and restart both it will print the job. And it may continue to print jobs but it's just a matter of time. Needless to say this is frustrating. I can print several jobs in a row with no problem and then I'll get this "communication has been lost between printer and computer". And I have to go thru the procedure above to get the last job printed. My wife doesn't understand how this works and will try to print the same job several times with the commo problem and then complains when it won't print.....and then they all print when the above procedure is followed. It was supplied only recently as part of an insurance claim settlement - she was told it had just been built for her specifically so she expected it to be problem free. The internet works fine and she can check her email and facebook, etc - but although Skype 4.2 is pre-installed she cannot logon to the service using her ID and password, and neither can I, it just says for ages "Signing in" and eventually "Skype cannot connect to your account - for help click here" but that link doesn't work either. She has asked for a password reset and logged onto the Skype website to complete this successfully, but the client still does the above - and the same with my own account. Also, the screen to activate her copy of MS Office XP is corrupted (just showing as blank box!). To try to resolve both problems, I backed up her files (only a few) and did a factory reset from the recovery partition. The Skype problem remains. It crashes to Bluescreen every time I Insert a USB stick, Connect and start my Printer, or connect my Western Dig Ext HD which has all the stuff I backed up on. The major problem was that I missed the "install order list" the first time (my own inexperience) but I have found another DELL list and it Contradicts the First order List anyway' Sooo! Is there a site where I can find out what I need the Order to install them and download them onto a Disk or USB as I had no internet when I first installed Widows XP that was the beginning of my downfall. You should certainly start with the drivers on the Dell web site. Always start with the chipset drivers. I'd do network and storage (IDE) drivers next then the others. Install drivers before installing the applications. 2 more replies Answer Match 32.76% I had to reinstall Windows XP on a Dell computer. The owner of the computer didn't have the original reinstallation disk so I used a Dell reinstallation disk that I have used to install Windows on many other Dell and HP computers in the past without a problem. This time it installed but seems to skip past the part near the end where it asks for all users names and the part where it checks for connectivity. That itself may not be a problem. However when I boot into the desktop I can't get onto the internet. I went into network connections and don't find any local area connection or net adapter.I don't know what to do at this point. A:Windows XP on Dell Computer 16 more replies Answer Match 32.76% For the last few months our new (about 9 months old) dell computer running XP has begun to freeze up, theres no apparent pattern to it, but what we found is that if we right click and get the task manager, light up the program DAMon.exe, and click end process it does free it up every time. We think the program DAMon.exe has something to do with Dells help system and did go to them and ask twice, we got two different solutions neither of which sounded right and we didnt do them. If its there program I assume we might consider eliminating it but are afraid to do that if it would result in their inability to assist in some other future problem. I am a novice and have been a little leery about doing anything, what ever solution you might think of would have to be simple but if anyone could suggest a simple thing I would appreciate it. Yes I do have some major issues with my computer that requires me to reformat, mostly caused by me. thanks mike A:Reformatting A Dell 410 Computer I did a Dell today that used F8 to access the recovery partition. That should be the quickest way to reformat your Dell and will leave the recovery partition intact (along with the Tools partition if you have one). If you'd like to get rid of all partitions, then you'll have to delete the partitions and create one partition to hold everything. Then you can install Vista with the Operating System, Drivers, and Utilities disks that came with your Dell. Personally, I'd go with the first option above - it's quicker and you won't have to install all the drivers and applications. 1 more replies Answer Match 32.76% I have a dell computer running XP professional. Tryin to work on my wifes Dell Gx-280 computer. It has a Intel Pentium 4 - 2.8 Ghz cpu. Here's the problem. Thought it was power supply so odered 1 from Dell & replaced it. Did not solve problem. Put old power supply back in & tried again w/ same problem. Finally I did get it to boot up & got message sayin' last shut down was normal & due to a thermal event or something to that nature. Ran machine for several hours & shut it down & rebooted it several times sucessfully. I did notice that sometimes when it boots the cpu fan is runnin' slow but picks up speed as it has run for a bit. Other times it is runnin' like a jet airplane as soon as it starts to boot up & stays runnin' at the speed the whole time machine is on. Thought the boot up problem had magically fixed itself. Put it into stand-by mode yesterday & restarted it this morning w/ no problem. Ran machine for awile & then put back into stand-by mode & when I went to retart it suddenly back to same problem again. I thought I had finally got it to boot again because power switch light went green & HDD light came on but stayed on & did not flicker. ... Read more

How far can you expand your average dell computer?

hey all, could someone tell me if i can change the motherboard in my factory dell vostro 410 desktop, so that i can replace it with a motherboard that is SLI enabled?

If so what motherboards should i be looking for, is there a specific one due to the size of the case?

Also, being a dell computer i realize your limited into what your changing, does that apply to the PSU and CPU?

Thank You, look forward to your replies

A:HELP: Expanding Dell Computer

The case is standard ATX size so a standard ATX motherboard will fit. Find one that is SLI enable. Since you are switching the motherboard out, why not build a PC from scratch? You'll have to look in the case but the PSU should be interchangeable.

Yes. Goto the manufactures web site for your printer and download windows 10 drivers and run the install. Do the same for the modem that you were using for fax, and make sure it shows up in the device manager without a yellow exclamation point, and then make sure the Windows Fax software is installed.

What is the model name and model number of that Dell, and how much RAM is installed?

Have you deleted all current partitions, created a new C partition, formatted that new partition with the NTFS file system, and then attempted to install XP SP2?

No video?

First thing I would check would be the connection between monitor and system and the power cord.

The fact that the system shuts down would seem to indicate a PS problem, with no further info (IMO).

Hello,
I just purchased a new XPS 8900 desktop delivered on 5/25/2016 and is restarting itself.  No new hardware installed or program except World of Warcraft and Ventrilo.   Just really started using this machine late last week since I was really busy after it arrived.
I research the web and it said it maybe PSU related issue.  It is under warranty but any idea why a new computer is restarting it self?
Thank you.
Susan

A:New Dell Computer Restarting by Itself

Windows 10?
There are many possible reasons, both hardware and software: PSU, RAM or hard drive problem, overheating, corrupted OS or other software...
Does it just restart? Any errors on the screen? You can look in Windows Event Viewer for errors around the time of a crash that might point you in the right direction.
If you bought it directly from Dell, I believe you have 21 days from invoice date (not delivery date) to return it so contact Dell Tech Support ASAP.
If you got it from a big box store, you can probably return/exchange it under whatever policy they have. So get going.
Either way, be sure to reset Windows to the factory image before you return it.

I am sort of befuddled as to why a friends computer will not turn on. There is a green light on the mobo indicating that there is power to the computer, but no luck starting up. I have replaced the power button switch on the front of the computer, checked all power connections to the power supply and motherboard, made sure the outlet was good, and am at a loss as what to check for. She says that there was not a storm before having this problem, but did tell me her daughter shut down the computer by just pushing the power button. I didn't think it was that much of a deal seeing as how the computer is 3 yrs old, but I could be wrong. Any help would be much appreciated.

A:Dell computer will not turn on

Dell computers have a nasty habit of "locking up" at times. sometimes unplugging the computer and letting it sit for 30 minutes then plugging it back in will solve the problem and sometimes you have to strip the components and add them piece by piece until you get it working again.

the process is to remove ALL components except the processor( including disconnnecting monitor, keyboard, mouse). plug in and power up shut down unplug, add memeory plugin and power up, unplug add hard drive plugin power up, power off, unplug, add video card( if there is one) power up at this point you should be able to tell if it is booting or not. (actually once you start getting beeps during the add component\power up process it should be able to boot once all components are reinstalled.

it is a pain in the rear but it is the process Dell tech support would lead you thru if you called them. ( I had to do it three times. with my 4 year old dell, once it locked up after I switched a optical drive.) oh yeah before i forget each time you shutdown during the adding component process, after you unplug hold in the power button for several seconds to drain any residual power.
