Q: Computer repeatedly freezing; running slowly; shuts down and starts up very slowly

Please help, my computer isn't very useful right now. Here's the deal:

1. My computer keeps on freezing up on me, and I don't even have many programs running. When my computer finally starts up, I log onto windows, and it takes seriously two or three minutes for windows to load; two weeks ago it took 20-30 seconds for windows to load. When windows finally loads, and I click on a program (ie. Internet Explorer or Opera Web Browser), it takes another five to seven minutes for one the programs to appear on the screen, then another minute or two for the program to load. When I close a program, it does one of two things; my computer will freeze, and I'll have to restart it; or, it will take a couple of minutes to close the program. And I'm just working with the basics; Internet explorer, opera, open office, and windows media. I'm trying to add music to my newly added iTunes library, but that's almost impossible.

2. My computer won't shut down. This computer is only seven months old, it's too young for such problems. When I go to shut my computer down, I select the shut down icon from the start menu, and expect my computer to shut down. Rather than shutting down, windows pop up telling me that the programs that I had been running are not responding, and I have the option to wait or end the program. I end the program, and the window comes up again, it's almost like my computer isn't properly responding to its commands. Again I end the program, and when all of the programs have been ended, windows just sits there. I wonder if it remembered I want to shut it down, so I click on a simple program, like Internet Explorer. A message comes up telling me that windows cannot start the program because it is currently shutting down. So I wait. About 90 seconds later, the logging off screen loads, two minutes pass before the shutting down screen loads, and ten minutes later the computer is still “shutting down.” I press and hold the power button for 20 seconds, and everything turns off. I turn the computer back on, wait for everything to load, and then restart the computer, hoping that it will somehow help. It hasn't. I've had to restart my computer five or six times today, and I've only been on it for two hours.

3. I'm also having problems with my speakers. I've played media with a couple of different players; windows media, iTunes, and a few on line players (such as launch); my speakers sound horrible. It sounds like there's a skip in the file that's playing; it sounds like my speakers have something that's skipping, or jumping, inside of them. Not to sound gross, but it almost sounds like my speakers are farting; that's the only thing I can think of to compare the noise to. And it's constant. I don't know if it's in the speakers, or the sound settings. I've made sure my Realtek HD Sound Manager was set to its normal settings; I played around with the speaker's balance to see if the noise only occurred in one of the speakers, I set the balance back when I was done; and I checked on all of the settings in advanced volume control, the seemed fine. This problem with the speakers began a week and a half ago. I was ripping a CD, legal, not burnt, un-scratched, just a normal CD, onto my computer. I was listening to it as I was ripping it, and in the middle of one of the songs the speakers began to vibrate the song. It sounded like it was skipping, or jumping, so I took the CD out and played the same track in another CD player. It was fine. I also checked the CD for lint or scratches, nothing. Since that time, my speakers have been getting worse, I can hardly understand the lyrics when I try to play a song, my speakers used to be perfect. The other two previously mentioned problems also began around the same time; my computer began having difficulties starting up and shutting down, a day or two after the speakers started going crazy on me; the computer freezing began a few days after the start up and shutting down problems began.

I've done everything that I know; I've performed a disc cleanup, removing the unnecessary files; I removed two programs that I didn't use much, FireFox and Trillian; I ran anti-virus programs and the like, AVG, SpyBot, Spyware Blaster, and Ad-Aware SE personal; I've tried to defragment the disk, but it keeps freezing. I just tried to defrag it again, and I got the following error message: “The scan has been canceled because an error occurred in file: C:/Acer/eManager/_LanguageFiles/IMAGES/CHECK_ON.BMP

I don't think I've done anything to this file, I wasn't even aware of such a file until just now, when I read that message. I downloaded some songs from the Internet a few weeks ago; and I just recently installed QuickTime and iTunes, when I got an iPod. I have no idea what to do.

I previously owned an Averatec, it was a model that was featured and sold only at Wal-Mart. A few months into owning that, it also began having problems shutting down. I remember having to do something with Service Pack 2. I don't want to do anything more to my ACER, until I know that it will be a help. I'm worried that I may mess something up more, when trying to help, because I'm not a computer pro.

If anyone has any ideas about what may be causing the above problems, or any suggestions of what to do to help them, please let me know. Any, and all help is so greatly appreciated.

Hi. My computer has been running much slower than normal. When you open a new window or even try to select a user from the first screen, it really takes its time. Even once the window is open, you can still hear the wheels turning inside the box like it is really struggling to run its basic operating system. When you type something into a web page text box, there is a lag from when I press the key to when the letter shows up.

I have Windows XP and an AMD processor (I don't know which one).

My computer is freezing often and i get a message telling me that firefox is not responding alot.  I went through the troubleshooting portion of the site, but that didnt seem to help.  I was brought here by the anaylize this portion of Hijackthis, im just not sure what to do, but any assistance would be appreciated.

My laptop has been running very slowly recently, and a lot of the time it will freeze when I attempt to open a new page/application. I'm assuming that this is because I have either Malware or viruses on my computer. My laptop is running Windows 7. I used to have AVG on this computer, but it expired and I didn't renew it, now an occasional message from AVG pops up, but that's it. I have not taken any other steps to fix this problem yet. Any help is appreciated!

After my anti virus lapsed for a few days because I accidentally turned it off,my computer started running really slow and freezing.I notice adobe flash plugin always crashes.Not sure that's related.All of this started a month ago.A GMER scan I performed a week ago said rootkit activity detected.I didn't delete anything or make any changes.

i've been having a few problems recently with my computer running extremely slowly and crashing every now and then, particularly when opening my computer. when i close out of firefox the cpu for the process firefox.exe goes immediately to 99% and will usually cause my computer to freeze unless i end the process instead of closing firefox normally.
when i close out of steam games, my computer will run slower than usual, even if i end all processes related to steam. my computer will stay at this slowed speed untill i restart my computer.

Recently, I received a message from the windows firewall about a wuaudit.exe and I blocked it. Now, I can barely go to websites or download anything, much less post in this forum. I have used spyware search and destroy which did not remedy the problem.

Hi,
A couple of months ago, a friend of mine was checking their email and clicked on an email from an unknown person. In doing this, my computer started acting weird. My computer is running very sluggish, shuts down without notice, programs like internet explorer stop woriking for unknown reasons, and when using any search engines, redirects me to other pages any time I click on a link. PLease help me get my computer back working normally!

P.S. I have lost my cd install windows and do not have a a boot cd.

Hi I hope you can help?

I'm running Windows 7, 64bit. Was using IE10 but uninstalled it back to 9 as thought that might be causing problem.

PC started reacting very slowly, takes 3/4 attempts before I can open window like itunes for example. Also freezes on shutdown and I get a black screen telling me it will close down when all the applications are closed - but here are none (obviously) open. PC then freezes completely so I have to restart to be able to close it down at all.

Alsao tried uninstalling and reinstalling itunes but that didn't help either.

Please take a look at the enclosed HJT log. My computer runs ok once it is loaded, but loading is slow (2-3 minutes). My browser is Firefox v1.5. I tried out a malware remover called "True Sword", which I grew suspicious of because it reported too many "trojans", so I uninstalled it. Some of the TS program files remain on the computer, and the Ada-Aware program was moved into a TS folder. Am considering manual deletion of the TS files and possibly reinstalling Adaware.

First, you do not have Hijackthis running from a permanent folder, please do this, get the download and follow the prompts, you can simply forget about the old one as it will be taken care of further down in the fix.

Please do the following: Without closing anything, use the link below, follow the downloading directions,
when it says you are to open a Reply, use the Post Reply at the top of the thread

Click here to download HJTsetup.exe
Save Hijackthis.exe to your desktop.
Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialogue.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
At the top of the Notepad HJT log screen, hit EDIT then SELECT ALL then click EDIT and then click COPY, doing that copies the text to the clipboard, you won't see it yet....
Open a TechSupportGuy forum Reply window for this thread, to have ready to paste the Hijackthis log into. Click once to place the typing cursor in the reply window.

I'm posting here today in hopes that someone will kindly assist me in tackling a number of performance issues that have come to fruition over the last two weeks or so. These issues have gradually grown to become more and more of a hindrance in my daily computer usage, and I alone have found myself to be stumped in resolving them over the past few days.

To describe the issues I'm currently facing with my desktop PC: I am noticing a dramatic decline in overall processing speed; programs and folders are taking far longer than usual to load up (sometimes up to 10 minutes before I even get a Windows 7 UAC prompt to permit the program to run); running programs will regularly go into a state of 'Not Responding', usually freezing up afterwards; 'explorer.exe' will regularly crash; browser plug-ins will regularly crash; mouse movements are noticeably jerky and keyboard input is also very laggy; CPU usage shoots up to 100% very often, with few programs running; operating system functionality is generally very sluggish, and the computer will generally lock-up after freezing up, forcing me to turn it off manually.

I can't recall anything that might have caused these issues in performance to arise. I don't run many programs at the same time, nor do I have many background programs running. Go to the hard drive manufacturers website and download the diagnostics software, and run it on your windows drive. Also open a command prompt and type chkdsk /f you will have to reboot your computer in order to have it run.

I have run all my programs for spyware, malware, and viruses and nothing is coming up. My computer is freezing off and on. It is also running horribly slow. I have not downloaded anything. The only thing I have done is run my new AT&T set up discs and I am not sure if that might have something to do with it. I need to know how to figure out what my problem is before I throw this thing into the yard.

my computer is typing REALLY slowly and certain programs keep freezing up. and when they freeze up i can't ctrl alt delete them so i have to keep pushing the power button to restart the computer. the computer isnt really running slow, it just keeps freezing on programs like mozilla and intunes. i have defragged, cleaned up the C drive, run an AVG and Zone alarm scan, and i have 75% free space. im pretty sure i have a trojan... but can someone tell me whats wrong with my computer and how to fix it?

I have a P111-733 with 128 ram.
The problem is over the last 4 weeks I have been getting more and more errors and it seems to slow the machine down to the point of hanging. The 2 prominent errors are

"Performed illegal operation and will be shut down."
details:

When I restart the speed is ok but then will go downhill to the point where these 2 messages will constantly appear.

Nothing really showing up in that log. Let's try some general cleaning and an online scan.

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if main link doesn't work) and install it.

*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp!

Run Cleanup! using the following configuration:

1. Click Options...
2. Set the slider to Standard CleanUp!
3. Uncheck the following:Delete Newsgroup cache
Delete Newsgroup Subscriptions
Scan local drives for temporary files
4. Click OK
5. Press the CleanUp! button to start the program. Reboot/logoff when prompted.
* CleanUp! will not create any backups!!

Hello,I can't see anything suspicious here, but your problem is mainly caused because you are having 2 Antivirus installed. Bitdefender and AVG.Never install more than one Antivirus and Firewall! Rather than giving you extra protection, it will decrease the reliability of it seriously! The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, your system may lock up due to both software products attempting to access the same file at the same time. Also because more than one Antivirus and Firewall installed are not compatible with eachother, it can cause system performance problems and a serious system slowdown. I would strongly advise you to only have one Anti-Virus with the Auto-Protect feature running at any one time!If you decide to only keep one Anti-Virus installed, you should uninstall the other(s) through the Add or Remove Programs option in Control Panel.Also, I see Zonealarm installed. Keep in mind that, on some systems, it may indeed cause a serious slowdown, especially when browsing. This all depends what your Computer specs are. How much ram etc..I do not recommend Zonealarm when you have less than 512MB of ram.

My computer browser is running slowly. I know how to clear out old files and stuff by using Tools > Internet Options. .....but that doesnt seem to help very much.

I doubt if I have a problem with viruses because I have McAfee and also the router of my home network has a built in fire wall.

I want to be able to get my computer running like new the same as if I took it to a computer repair store.

Hello, My comp is running slowly and I want to ask about moving programs from C drive to D drive. I have a Sony Vaio notebook (PCG-NV170) running XP. The C drive is around 65% full and D is empty. What are the best programs to move over to D and what is the best way to do this? I have Quicken installed, but I don't use it much, I thought I would start with this. How interchangeable are the drives, though? If I moved programs that I use often over, would they still function as well? I've only ever dealt with one hard drive before. Thanks in advance.

go to start/run/type msconfig/click ok/click startup, uncheck the boxes for these programs!

go to this site and download these tools and once you get both
adaware Se 1.6 and spybot, update both of them.

Set adaware to do a full system scan and deselect, "search for neglible risk
entries". Click next to start the scan. Delete everything adaware finds.

reboot and now run spybot

Spybot: Search and destroy.

Delete what spybot finds marked in red. After updating spybot hit the
immunize button.

reboot again
With CWshredder close all browsers and programmes and select the FIX button.

Go here and download Microsoft Antispyware Beta. First in the top menu click
File then Check for updates to download the definitons updates.

After updating look in the right side of the main window under "Run Quick
Scan Now" and click Spyware scan options. In that window put a tick by Run a
full system scan and then put a check by all three options below that then
click Run Scan now.

When the scan is finished, let it fix anything that it finds (have it
quarantine the items that have that option rather than delete just in case.
It is a beta program and there may be false positives)

Restart your computer.

* Download the Trial/Demo version of Ewido Security Suite here
EWIDO DOWNLOAD

* Install ewido.
* During the installation, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
* Launch ewido
* It will prompt you to update click the OK button and it will go to the main screen
* On the left side of the main screen click update
* Click on Start and let it update.
* DO NOT run a scan yet. You will do that later in safe mode.
* Click here for info on how to boot to safe mode if you don't already know
how.

Hey guys, I could use some help. My computer has been running very slowly lately. I have 67 free gigs of space, so I wouldn't think that's the problem. It's slow in the following ways:

Opening the start menu
Opening Programs
Running Firefox or any browser

programs seem to lag pretty badly when I have more than one open. Sometimes even when I only have one open. Could this be due to my computer's amount of RAM?

The computer is a Dell Dimension 8250.
It's about 3 years old but I try to maintain it well.
I've reformatted it once. I'd rather not do it again.

Hello everyone,I've been having many problems with my laptop. When I click on something, it takes sometimes up to 3-4 minutes for it to process and whenever I try to shut it down or restart it lots of dialog boxes pop up asking me to end processes now because they are not responding.I tried to follow all the steps before running the Hijack This log but it's frustrating being on my computer for more than fifteen minutes because it usually freezes and then I have to start all over again! Hello,
My laptop has not been working at the rate it should be, when I play games, it has very low framerates, and when I copy stuff to my hard drive, it takes ages (7-8MB/s) when originally it worked at around 30 MB/s,

My computer is running slowly, and my computer has crashed several times, and froze twice. AVG didn't pick up anything when it scanned this morning, and my computer froze the second time a couple of minutes ago when I tried to run spybot.

Over the past 4-5 days I've noticed my computer is running extremely slow. It's somewhat bareable, as I can still play games but say I want to play poker and web surf often times it starts to freeze/delay. Sometimes even if I click on a web page it will sometimes pause for a second as if it has to reload. Feels like I'm on a Pentium 2 or something even though I have a Phenom X3. I don't think it's a virus because nothing fishy has been going on, and I did check my hijackthis and it seems alright to me. But I pasted it below just in case...

Except for AVG9, most of your startup list can be prevented from auto-loading and running in the background.

From what I can see in your log, a scan for malware and spyware and other "nasties" is in order.

Download and save these 2 programs:

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.46

SUPERAntiSpyware 4.42.0.1000

Close all open windows first, install them both, then restart your computer.

Follow these instructions next:

Start Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

Click "Updates(tab) - Check for Updates".

When the definition files have updated, click "OK".

Click "Scanner(tab) - Perform quick scan - Scan".

If infections are found during the scan, the number of infections will be highlighted in red.

When the scan is finished, click "Show Results".

Make sure that everything is selected, then click "Remove Selected".

If you're prompted to restart to finish the removal process, click "Yes".

Start Malwarebytes Anti-Malware again.

Click "Logs"(tab).

Highlight the scan log entry, then click "Open".

When the scan log appears in Notepad, copy-and-paste it here.

Start SUPERAntiSpyware.

Click "Check for Updates".

When the definition files have updated, click "Close".

Click "Scan your Computer - Perform Quick Scan - Next".

If infections or problems are found during the scan, a list will appear.

For the past 4 days or so, my computer has been lagging like it never has before. I've gone through the entire preperation guide...it's so slow that each scan took hours. Hi,

Ok, im not 100% sure where this should be put but since its to do with Windows i thought it cant be to much harm.

But the last 2-3 weeks ive been having major problems with my PC running very slowly, things havent changed like i have not downloaded anything what im aware off and its changed. For example it take anywhere from 2-10 mins to load up nearly anything when it used to open in a few seconds. also, while gaming i get horrible fps and terrible fps lag its awful to try do work and also enjoy my past time on the pc. so any suggestions would be nice also if you need details your going to need to explain im a complete rookie with PC's.
Also, while looking over some posts one said in taskmanager if a programm is running with 3 digits its a virus i this true and what should i do about them if it is

My sister has come home from university for the holidays and asked me to check out her laptop computer for her because it has been running slower than usual. I ran through all the steps on the stickies and it is still not running as it should, so I thought it might be best if I post a HJT log here for some more guidance to see if anything can be done. Hello,

My computer is running very slowly. I have an expired copy of Norton 2005 on the machine which I don't think is scanning anymore, so I have not checked for viruses/malware. I did do a windows scandisk which found and repaired a lot of bad clusters. That may have improved things somewhat. I do not have any popups or noticable malware running. It just slower than it should be. I use this pc for a single application at the office and it is rarely used for general surfing, never any torrent progs, etc.

I've recently been having trouble running Starcraft on this computer. It's an older computer, but until last week, it was running Starcraft fine. I also noticed that the computer itself has slowed down whenever my screen saver comes up or I try to play a movie. I was checking my device manager and noticed the ! beside my display adapter.

It's a NVIDIA Vanta/Vanta LT.

The message that comes up in the status box is:

This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use. (Code 12)

If you want to use this device, you will need to disable one of the other devices on this system.

I recently installed a Wireless Router Reciever on this computer and it started running slowly. About a week later, the power flicked off and on due to a thunderstorm, then this computer started running normally again. The other day, my brother kicked the power bar off which has the cable modem, and the router hooked up on it. Then it started slowing down again.

Running XP with 700mHz processor and 320mb RAM. (don't mock me )

Any ideas?

The yellow Exclamation mark beside the Device means the computer can not properly communicate with the Device, probably caused by an improperly installed display driver.

The easiest solution would be to restart the computer into safe mode, and re-install it.

My computer does not run at optimum speed and I don't know how I can fix it. I downloaded the free "regcure", did the scan and the report showed 1400 + things that needed to be fixed. of course they won't fix them until you buy the software.
So I tried the hijack this scan. The log will follow.
I have a Lenovo 3000 C200 laptop running windows xp professional version 2002 with service pack 3.
When I open my task manager there seems to be many programs running even though i don't have any programs opened. i know that this could be from software that starts up automatically that runs in the background. I don't know what should be running and I don't feel comfortable removing items.
I haven't run the Lenovo optimizer yet. I need a little guidance on how I should proceed. I have never used this forum before, so I don't even know how I will be contacted. My email address is [email protected].

While I was sleeping my mom downloaded a program, she says she
scanned it before she opened it, but once she opened it nothing
ran, and every program stopped working until we restarted, now
everything is just very slow, also on start up the task bar is not working

My computer runs very slowly, often lagging for up to 15 seconds while I'm simply trying to move the mouse. I've tried running different kinds of scans and the computer crashes before they can finish, giving me a frozen black screen with a cmd cursor in the corner.

Panda crashed the computer before it could finish, so I re-ran it to about the point it was at before it crashed and stopped and stored the log.

Hello,

My computer is running very slowly, and I cannot figure out why. I defragmented, ran a virus scan, etc. I also use adaware and spybot regularly to check for spyware. Nothing seems to help. I am confused because this computer has run well up until recently. It is older--we purchased it in about 2002-2003.

In case this is important--it is a Dell and I'm running Windows XP.

A while back i had a problem with some viruses that got into my computer and pretty much rendered it useless for a little while. I recieved help on another website and the computer seems to be virus free (thats what they told me in the virus help section after we ran through some fixes, and my computer is now virus free) but the computer seems to be running very slowly. It boots up slower, when windows loads it takes a lot longer for all the startup programs to load, and when i try and start a program like firefox or microsoft powerpoint it takes a long time to load (we are talking like 15 seconds or less but before the virus issues it took like 2 seconds to open things like powerpoint and firefox) The computer is just running overall more slowly.
Should i post a hijackthis log and post my msconfig startup prorgrams?

First of all, I am using a Dell Inspiron 600m. Recently I've began having problems with my computer running slowly. Since I have plenty of room left on my hard drive (19 GB) I think that there may be something on my computer, so if someone could please take a look at my logs I'd appreciate it. My work just sent me a work laptop. It is so slow. I am wondering if there is anything I can do about it. It is window's vista and I am an XP user so I am not as familiar with this. Hi everyone,My computer has suddenly started running very slowly and I think it may have started with a possible trojan infection or malware isue. I have scanned with Spyware Doctor etc. and came up empty handed. My computer (Windows XP home edition) has been running very slowly lately, and I can't really find a reason for it, most of the scans I've run (with McAfee, IOBit Security, and SDFix) haven't really found much, just the usual tracking cookies, but Malewarebyte's Anti-Malware, has found 31 items:

Hi guys. I'm helping my girlfriend with her computer. You've been very helpful in the past! The main issue is that her computer is running so slowly that it's almost impossible to use it when not in safe mode (which is the only way I was able to run these scans). I noticed she had utorrent installed which I removed though she states she hasn't messed with torrents in a long time. Please help if possible. Thank you!

It is more difficult when files/programs are appearing in/disappearing from the logs.
Please do not run any scans other than those requested
Please follow all instructions in the order posted
All logs/reports, etc.. must be posted in Notepad. Please ensure that word wrap is unchecked. In notepad click format, uncheck word wrap if it is checked.
Do not attach any logs/reports, etc.. unless specifically requested to do so.
If you have problems with or do not understand the instructions, Please ask before continuing.

Create new Restore PointClick your Start button
In the Search box type [B]create restore[/B
click on Create a restore point
Click the System Protection tab
click Create
Give your restore point a name and click Create
Wait while Windows creates a system restore point for you

Next

Click on the Start button > Control Panel

Depending on your setings, either click on the Uninstall a program option under the Programs category.
If you are using the Classic View of the Control Panel, then you would double-click on the Programs and Features icon instead.

A while back i had a problem with some viruses that got into my computer and pretty much rendered it useless for a little while. I recieved help on this website and the computer seems to be virus free (thats what they told me in the cirus help section) but the computer seems to be running very slowly. It boots up slower, when windows loads it takes a lot longer for all the startup programs to load, and when i try and start a program like firefox or microsoft powerpoint it takes a long time to load (we are talking like 15 seconds or less but before the virus issues it took like 2 seconds to open things like powerpoint and firefox)


Can anyone help me?

Were you running Anti Virus software before...if yes, what was it. I know if I run AVG FRee on my system it is really fast, but loose am more prone to a virus.

I just did a clean install of XP and quite a few others before that however, I know once I install CA on this system it will slow down quite a bit just from what it is doing in the background when I open a browser or other programs. I've run a few different AV programs and I seem to like CA because it isn't as intrusive as some others and it updates in the background with very little input from myself unless iot reminds me I haven't scanned lately. Also, CA is easily customisable when you install. I elected to only install the AV and Spyware part of it. I prefer to use Windows' Firewall.

I was hoping I could get some help removing excess programs from my girlfriend's PC. It's starting to run excessively slowly. We received it as a gift from my dad and I think he had installed quite a bit of software we will never use.

It is a HP laptop running Windows Vista Home Premium.
HP Pavilion dv9000.

When all is said and done, I'd like to have Picasa installed on it to edit pictures and Internet Explorer. Pretty much everything else goes unused.

I've been having a slow experience with my computer for the past while. It used to be pretty quick at loading and booting up in Windows and running games and everything, but now a days its starting to become somewhat sluggish. My computer is 4 years old so I'm aware that that could be a factor in its performance, but I also know that it could still keep up in gaming and such if a few things were corrected. Examples of issues I notice are slow boot times into Windows (part where its at the blue windows loading screen), somewhat slow shutdown time, slow time to load up tray icons (MSN, Firewall, Anti Spyware, Volume Control, ect), sluggish performance in games in terms of framerate even with settings at minimum (aware this may be a video card issue), slow load time when opening applications like My Computer for the first time. I was just looking for some insight and feedback to see what some people, experienced with this issue, may give in order to get my computer back running the way it used to be.

Having run ComboFix, without a helper, I came to the ComboFix Log File and the instructions stated that the computer needed further analysis to find out if there were any further infections.I do seem to have lost that file probably because I must have saved it incorrectly so as requested I have attached the DDS files.
i could not create a GMER Log as the scan did not complete after running for 3 hours Windows shut down with the message "A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer." DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. When it tried to restart itself I had the message "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER" which I did with no response.
I had to press and hold the "ON" button to shut down after which it started correctly

I don't know what the "freedom hidden window" thing is you are seeing, some more info or a screenshot would be helpful.

It might be associated with this > C:\Program Files\Common Files\Command Software\dvpapi.exe

But it's quite possible that your slow internet is due to the parental controls associated with McAfee -- if it is busy filtering.

Hi. Starting a couple days ago, my computer has been very laggy. For example, opening up My Computer or Firefox takes 5-12 seconds. Also my applications have been freezing and crashing (i.e. the message "this application is not responding") including Firefox, Wordpad, and explorer.exe. First I tried downloading Google Chrome to see if that ran any faster than Firefox, and it doesn't. Next, I ran MBAM and Spybot (the scans took a few hours each) and they turned up nothing. I also used autoruns to stop some executables which were unnecessary or possibly malicious, and that didn't seem to help either. I'm not sure what's wrong, and using my computer now is very frustrating. Could someone please help me?

My computer seems to run slowly only while browsing the web. Youtube videos are so choppy that they are impossible to watch. I use Firefox. Since my last post, I've also run an ESET scan, which showed no infections, and defragmented my hard drive, which hasn't seemed to help.

She has a laptop which has been running very slowly for a week or so. It's even refused to boot up a few times (gets stuck in the loading screen). When it finally gets started, it takes a long time to browse the internet (just clicking on IE will freeze it up). I also know she ran torrent programs such as utorrent (which I deleted). This was not a well-protected computer in the past - I'm pretty sure the first time microsoft updates were installed was as recently as a few weeks ago.

Sorry for posting without this information the other day. Below you'll find the DDS report and attached the other two files you've asked for. The problem is that the computer is running ridiculously slow. If I open an Internet Explorer window, it'll take 2-3 minutes for the window to open and then if I click to type in a new web address, the computer will freeze for a minute or two before allowing me to enter the address. It's a continual cycle like this. Additionally, the problem gets worse the longer the computer is on. If I turn the computer on, it works much faster than an hour or two later.

Also, some programs have disappeared from the computer. These were programs I had installed in the past that my Mother does not know how to uninstall, like Microsoft Office and certain icons on the desktop.

I just installed AVG anti virus thinking there was a virus that was causing all of these problems, and that made the system run even slower.

Any help you can offer will be of great help.

My WinXP Professional computer has been running very slowly. In looking at the task manager, winlogon.exe seems to be running around 95% most of the time.

I have run NAV and found no viruses and Adaware and found a few files that were removed after the scan.

In addition, the task bar and much of the windows are blacked out.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Firstly I would like to say that it is wonderful to have found a replacement for castle cops which I had just found before they were closed down! Thank-you for just being here lol Secondly I am just learning about using my computer safely although I have had 1 for years mainly for my children. With help from castle cops I managed to get my computer back online after it was full of viruses although I have noticed that since being able to install SP2 last year it is running very slowly! If anyone would be kind enough to help me as I would be most grateful as I was enjoying learning before castlecops closed down.

Hey guys, my computer started running incredibly slowly recently, so I ran a virus scan, turned up a few trojans, and deleted them, still didn't fix the problem.

Long story short, I've run the following scans:
Malwarebytes
Avira
Avast
SUPERantispyware

Caught some things at first, they now all come up clean. I also followed all the steps in the "Is your PC running slowly?" thread. My PC is still running slowly. I also occasionally get BSOD'd. I'm running windows XP(32 bit), it's a custom-built machine, and I don't have a windows install or recovery disk anymore.

Below is the DDS, and the attached reports. when I ran GMER I kept getting BSOD on the full scan, so I ran it with sections and C: only.

K, I'm new to this whole hijack thing lol but lately my computer has been running really really slowly, I mean it takes like 10 minutes just to start AOL and this problem just occurred recently, anyways I ran a program called Security Task Manager to see if I could come up with any processes running that I did not know about and do alittle research on them to see if they were causing any problems. Could someone look at my log file and tell me if theres anything I need to fix to make my computer run alot faster then what it's doing now? Thanks!:)

Oh yea, there was another process that was running called mainiis.exe but I ended the process and quarantined it but when I went back to put it back on it said that another one was already running at the time and it wouldn't let me overwrite it so I'm not sure... Thanks guys!

I've been having a slow experience with my computer for the past while. It used to be pretty quick at loading and booting up in Windows and running games and everything, but now a days its starting to become somewhat sluggish. My computer is 4 years old so I'm aware that that could be a factor in its performance, but I also know that it could still keep up in gaming and such if a few things were corrected. Examples of issues I notice are slow boot times into Windows (part where its at the blue windows loading screen), somewhat slow shutdown time, slow time to load up tray icons (MSN, Firewall, Anti Spyware, Volume Control, ect), sluggish performance in games in terms of framerate even with settings at minimum (aware this may be a video card issue), slow load time when opening applications like My Computer for the first time. I was just looking for some insight and feedback to see what some people, experienced with this issue, may give in order to get my computer back running the way it used to be.

The amount of games installed wont be helping, Check that your Pagefile isnt too large. Also, go to Properties of your main HDD and run Disk Cleanup (with all options selected) that should also free you some HDD space.

I have followed all the steps including removing temporary internet files, running spybot, and having up to date virus protection software. I even recently purchased more memory for my computer which didn't help significantly. Hi,
my computer seems to running slowly and very clunkily at the moment. I did all the scan and panda activescan came back with 3 bit of spyware: activeearch, systemdoctor and myaffiliateprogram .

A:please help, computer running slowly

i think it might be to do with WMI - as if something has got hold of it and is running prcesses - i keep getting a corrupt file on the D drive and having to fix it along with high interrupts-- is this a case of backing up important data to CD, clean install and wiping all hard drives then changing passwords? or is there something else? I've turned off WMI for the time being seems a little better.

Hey all, Some advice needed please.

I am currently running XP media center edition (service pack 3) and using google chrome as my main web browser as i cannot open up ie for some strange reason, (it opens, but they keeps reloading the page, and bringing up error messages)... Anyway

My computer seems to be running really slowly, I have over 50GB free on my hard drive and have done full scans with both Malware antibytes and Mcafee, neither have found any viruses.

I have also run advanced registry optimizer, which seems to fix hundreds of problems but doesnt actually make my pc any quicker, the average load up time is now around 7 mins in the morning, where only a few weeks ago it was loading up in less than a minute.

I have tested my broadband speed at different times of the day and niter, and the results all seem around the same (7mb/s)

Anyone got any ideas for things i could try now, or any software it may be worth getting to try to solve once and for all?

Any help appreciated.

I don't know why but my computer seems to be running slowly lately. Watching a video there will be some frames missing. When I tried fast forwarding it would take 1-2 secs to load or the video would pause and the audio would keep going. This just started recently and I tried to see if it was just the files but when I rewatched the files that worked perfectly before there was lag. Also when I'm typing there is a lag from the input and when it appears. The lag isn't that bad but its noticeable. Also there is lag when erasing text. Also I get an error message when shutting down my computer but I can't read it because my computer shuts down before I get the chance to. The only things that I've done was updating windows, installed a VPN about a week ago, and installed a SSD about 1-2 months ago other than that all I've done was watch videos and browsed the internet.

Have you ran the standard scans? I mean malwarebytes and a good deep scan with your Anti-Virus? Have you tried a restore point to before this started? Updated all video/network drivers?

Hello, my computer is running very slowly, it takes forever to load pages on the internet, I cant sign in to check my email, and I can't download files because it says transferring and nothing happens. My computer is also very slow on start-up and there is this putt-putt sound that it makes when something is loading,etc. Last week I had a system.exe-bad image pop-up every time I started windows and randomly throughout, and I did some research and used combofix to get rid of it. It worked, I guess it detected that I had a rootkit, but my computer is still running slow, perhaps even slower now. Any help would be greatly appreciated. My computer is a dell with windows xp. A:Computer running slowly again

Adaware-6 is no longer supported. Uninstall that version.

Download AdAware SE Personal: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/

Install the program and launch it.

On the bottom right-hand corner of the main window click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

In the main window: Click Start and under Select a scan Mode tick Perform full system scan.

Deselect Search for negligible risk entries.

To start the scan, click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and then click Next)

Reboot and post another log.

A:Computer running very slowly

I notice that you have more than one virus program running...sometimes they interfere with one another....also, you could try disk clean up, a registry clean up, and a defragmenting.
There are a lot of free programs that can do registry cleaning and disk clean up of junk files...Good Luck!
