programs won't load at startup

Q: programs won't load at startup

I don't recall doing anything to cause this problem. Just started my computer one day and this happened...I am missing icons in my system tray. The programs that the icons represent won't load at startup. When I try to start them by clicking on the shortcut icon...they won't start. Some of the programs that won't start are Sygate Firewall, People Pc, multimedia keyboard, AVG anti-virus, Win Patrol. I checked, and all of these programs are in my startup folder. Can anyone help? I have Windows XP Pro as my OS.

Hello,
I have a problem whit startup programs. When I start Windows 7, sometimes some programs do not load at startup. It doesn?t happen all the time and it is not always the same program that doesn?t load, but it occurs randomly.
Anyone has got a solution for this? Thanks in advance for your help.

One thing that might help would be a list of various places in the windows registry where programs can insert themselves to load on startup. Basically it seems like spyware apps are finding ways of loading on startup that the user can not detect within msconfig. I am wondering if anyone out there can suggest some places and methods that are not well known that spyware might use to attack a computer upon startup? The only one I know is the appinit dll entry system, but anything else along those lines might help a lot of people kill this stupid spyware software.

So I've been experiencing this pretty much from the first day after installing Windows 8.1.

It goes as follows:

1. I power on the PC (or restart), windows boots up, I put in the password and it is fairly quick to enter destkop mode.
2. Now this is when my issue occurs, the startup programs may take up to 2 minutes to start load.

This is not because my computer is slow or anything like that, it almost seems like there is a set delay and only then my programs are allowed to start loading. Once they start loading, it only takes couple of seconds. The problem is, they won't start - only after I hang in destkop for about a minute or two.

Example: my cursor software, sound card software (those two are crucial) and others... (all of the rest)

A:Startup programs in desktop take ages to load

Download WinPatrol and choose to delay startup programs you don't need to be started first. Get it from here:
WinPatrol Help: Delayed Start

Alternatively, you can also navigate system configuration window and choose Normal Startup instead of selective startup. Type msconfig at the run dialog box (press 'windows' button + 'R').

Good Luck though!!

After installing SP2 successfully...

My startup program lists on msconfig is cleared up and not even a single program
(av, firewall, etc) will load up.. when i check on these program's preferences, the
'load at startup' option automatically unchecks! i checked that after every boot...

i even tried 3rd party softwares to add them on startup registry, but after another
boot.. none of them will load again!

I'm using an Asus N550JV running Windows 8.1.

Recently, whenever I restart my computer or shutdown->startup, I notice that startup programs (e.g the Logitech Application for my mouse, Google Drive sync etc) do not run unless I sign out and sign back in. I can constantly replicate this.

I'm not sure if this has to do with me disabling hibernation (I did this on day one of getting my notebook).

The problem with this situation is that I disable my touchpad because I have a wireless mouse, but on occasions where I don't have a mouse available, I can press the Asus instant-on button and I have it set to toggle the touchpad on/off function. Because the startup services aren't loading, I'm unable to use that button now and I'm stuck using my keyboard to try to manually turn it on.

Seems like msconfig is also stuck on selective startup.

About two days ago, I noticed that my internet browser (Firefox) kept crashing. I reinstaled it and optimised its memory usage, but that didn't help. When I switched to IE, the same thing happened. I rebooted the computer, and this time none of the normal applications (Skype, MSN, McAfee 'active' icon) loaded correctly. The computer also seemed to be going a lot slower than usual.

I am using Windows XP, Home Edition (2002), SP2. I tried to update to SP3, but on restarting the System menu still tells me I'm running SP2.

I downloaded FreeXPpro to make sure that a memory leak wasn't to blame, and it indicates that at least half of my RAM is free most of the time.

Then, I downloaded ProcessExplorer to check to see if any of the system processes weren't what they should be (everything seemed fine).

I tried to run McAfee, but the scan went so slowy that about 7 hours later at 70% the computer locked up. It didn't find anything in that time.

Then I downloaded Clean40 to clean my temporary files.

Next I downloaded the latest version of a Malwarebytes. It crashed when I tried to update it, and went very slowly otherwise. I decided to run it in Safe Mode, and it discovered 9 registry keys were infected with WebDir and MiniBug.

However, on restarting my computer, the programs still won't load correctly on startup, windows update / Malwarebytes update doesn't work and I still get random crashes.

Does anyone have any advice for the following? I was running a scientific program (Matlab) that caused my computer to hang and required cutting the power. When I restarted I started getting all these problems.

Office 2007 no longer starts (Word was running when my computer hung). When I try to start Word, it starts the Microsoft Installer process. Then the Installer fails and says: "Error 1719: The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance." I confirmed that the Windows Installer service is started under services.msc. Unregistering and reregistering the installer with msiexec.exe /unregister and msiexec.exe /register does not help.

Reinstalling Office 2007 from the original setup file gives the error: "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing the action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel." This was for setup.exe, but other .exe files work fine.

Going to Control Panel -> Program and Features and clicking on "Change" for Word gives: "An error has occurred while trying to uninstall Microsoft Office. It may have already been uninstalled." However, this error does not apply just Office, it applies to EVERY program on the computer.

Hi all,

Found this site and was hoping for some help. A couple weeks ago, I turned on my ASUS G74SX-XR1 and the screen never came on. I took out the battery and discharged the static electricity and my computer started up fine. Well yesterday, after coming back from a vacation where I took my laptop with me and used it all weekend, my laptop screen wouldn't come on again. I tried the same method as before and it still didn't work. Troubleshooting it, I found that the backlight wasn't coming on. Graphics card OK. I saw with a flashlight that the computer was running, but it was running Startup Repair. This worried me. I let the computer set for a day and today it starts up fine, backlight and all. But, now my laptop connects to the router, but with no internet access both wireless and wired connections neither at home or at school. Also, some basic startup programs that I've never had a problem with, are now crashing on startup. Can these two problems be related? Or is it an inverter going out and corruption of files?

--Adrian

it depends what programs are failing ... as for the backlight if you can see it with a flash light then it is the inverter board... hook the computer up to monitor start the computer in safe mode and check the windows logs and see what it is thats crashing ....

I was wondering what the difference was whether you had a program load at startup (by checking a box within the program to have it load when the computer boots) and unchecking that box but moving a shortcut to the programs executable into the startup folder on the start menu.

Is there any difference?

Okay, so I tried to disable unimportant startup programs for 7 by using Autoruns for Windows. Apparently I disabled something crucial because now the computer won't start up at all. I can't get past the startup repair screen, and I don't have any images or system restore points to revert back to. Here's my problem details from Startup Repair:

Problem Event Name: StartupRepairOffline
Problem Signature 01: 6.1.7600.16385

Obviously I'm an idiot, but is there anything I can do? I can't get beyond the startup repair screen, I've started with f8 and tried safe mode, none of that works. Any help will be truly appreciated.

A:Windows 7 Startup Failure, Disabled Startup Programs

In my opinion, once you get to a point where even startup repair fails, the easiest way is to start again.

So, back up your data. One way you can do this is by using Ubuntu. This is completely free, and has the advantage that it can be run off a USB stick or a CD - saving you having to install it on your hard drive.

You can get it from here: http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download

Step #2 on that page shows you how to create the USB/CD.

Then once you boot into it you can use it to copy your files from the Windows Partition to an external hard drive (Note: Do not copy anything to the Ubuntu Filesystem as it will not be saved on shut-down)

Then wipe the drive with Killdisk and install Windows again.

Quote:

Download the ISO (or the .exe for USB drives) from here http://www.killdisk.com/downloadfree.htm

Then (if you have chosen the ISO) burn the ISO using IsoRecorder: ISO Recorder v3 Download (How to use IsoRecorder)

Boot from the CD/USB and wipe the drive - be careful which drive you are wiping, as it is designed to make data recovery near impossible

My computer won't let some programs load and others to do it's job. For instance, I have a couple of internet marketing programs that require validation over the internet before it boots up. One of the programs load fine, but it doesn't work when I actually run it. The other doesn't load up at all; I check task manager and it says that it is running but the interface is nowhere to be found. Also, I cannot update any of my software including my AVG and ZoneAlarm.

I have ran a error-check and defrag of my C: drive but that did nothing.

I ran Malwarebytes but that, too, can't update itself.

I ran Uniblue RegistryBooster and it scans fine. But once I try to clean registry it just shuts down!!

I went through my entire taskmanager and msconfig startup list and ran every process through bleepingcomputer.com and neuber.com but can't seem to find any problems.

I tried shutting down my firewall to see if it's causing the problems since it seems to be internet-based software and updates that aren't working but that didn't work.

Not really sure where to go from here.

Thanks in advance,

John

When you cannot updateSince you cannot use the Internet, manually download the definition updates from another computer, save them to a flash (usb, pen, thumb, jump) drive or CD and transfer to the infected machine. Then just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install the update. If you cannot transfer or install from the infected machine, try installing the file directly from the flash drive to your machine.alternate rules.ref download link 1alternate rules.ref download link 2Mbam-rules.exe is not updated daily. Another way to get the most current database definitions is to install MBAM on a clean computer, launch the program, update through MBAM's interface, copy the definitions (rules.ref) to a USB stick or CD and transfer that file to the infected machine. This is a question that has plagued me for years working with Windows XP. When I load XP, then when everything is finished loading, I try to run a program (it can be any program), and it takes a short while for the program to actually start loading, or display. This only happens for the first program I try to run when I load up my PC (including task manager). Does anybody know what causes this? Or, are there any fixes for this? Thanks

A:Programs do not load

As a guess, it may be that your computer is talking a looonnngggg time to actually load (not everything is loaded when you see the desktop).

Try turning it on and going away for 10 minutes and then running a program.

Does it then load right up?

Using Windows XP and this computer already had some malware on it that I removed by deleting things outright under the file search and "recently modified"...however, I tried to do some more deleting tonight and quickly lost the user account access screen (it changed to an old style looking one and only lets me login under the first account), my icons are now all looking highlighted, and I can't really load much of anything other than Internet Explorer...pretty sure I deleted a key dll file so if anybody knows what particular one launches programs, that would be a great help and I could go ahead and download it.

I would just reinstall XP but I don't have a disc on hand. I also can't run .exe so no RegEdit or TaskManager, etc.

The error message I get is:

"The application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect." This happens with any sort of file (zip, video, etc.)

I'm running Windows XP and just recently started to have the following issues:

- Majority of the time I have to launch a program two times before it will actually run

- In IE sometimes the toolbars do not show

- In FF sometimes it hangs OR sometimes it doesn't load the CSS. I have to hard-refresh to get the CSS working. Also sometimes the images don't load so I have to do the same thing.

What should be the first step to take to diagnose this?

I was hoping to get some help. When I go to load a program I double click on in and the install wizard is activated and the screen telling you what the program is comes up for 2 seconds and then it goes away and the installation just turns it's self off. I have tried to install it in Windows Safe mode but the the same thing happens. I'm using windows XP the system is a Intel P4. If anyone could give me a hand it wold be greatly appreciated.

A:I Need Some Help! Programs Won't Load

Does this happen with all programs or just a specific one? Which program are you trying to install?

It is possible that the downloaded file is corrupt. Try downloading it again, save it to a disk or flash drive, and try installing it. Does the same problem occur?

I believe a couple of other people have the same problem so hopefully someone here will have an answer.

My wife noticed a slowdown in the computer so she tried rebooting. Upon restart, IE7 starts to open but never connects with the internet. I also noticed that a few of my programs didn't load also (Norton Internet Security & Weatherbug). I also noticed that my processes show iexplorer.exe starting on its own and running in the backgroud. Ending the process was only temporary as it opened on its own again a little later.

Someone suggested that it could be a conflict between some new software from a newly installed external hard drive and these programs. Just to be safe, I uninstalled all four programs (Norton, Weatherbug and both new software programs). Nothing changed.

Using Symantec's website, I ran the antivirus program and a few adware cleaners. Nothing was found out of the ordinary.

Please help me with this issue. I'm out of ideas.

Hello everyone. I have a serious problem right now with my desktop computer. I am using a friend's laptop at the moment to post on this forun. Here's what happened:

A little while earlier my internet connection went out which is a frequent occurence. I opened a command prompt and typed in ipconfig and released and then tried to renew my connection. The renew command simply hung there and after a few minutes I exited the command prompt, thinking that eventually it would correct itself as it usually does. I tried to open Microsoft Word to get some work done and received the following error message:

The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142). Click OK to terminate.

I did so and then tried it again. Same error message. I tried opening another program and received, yet again, the same message.

At that point I rebooted. When my computer came back on, I would say that 98% of the start-up programs failed to initialize. I received several of those messages. I tried to open Firefox to get online to come here and it would not lot load.

My computer will boot in safe mood with Networking and in safe-mode programs will load correctly, but l cannot access the internet.

I rebooted again and chkdsk ran itself automatically. It said something was "dirty" and it removed some things and then booted normally. No change at the desktop--programs still wont load.

I've rebooted several times. At the present moment, programs will load without the er... Read more

Hi Vicki,

You'll need to give more information surrounding the issue for us to be able to help. A great start would be to ascertain which program is causing the error. This will more than likely be in the title bar (Blue Bar) at the top of the error message.

It should look like 'MyProgram.exe'.

Let us know and we'll take it from there.

Hi! please help me with this one:
I have win7 rtm installed for 2 months now and all worked great.
Today, when i started the pc, all programs that were loading at startup started correctly, but everything else just does not load. any program i click appears in task manager with just a few kb of memory allocated and just hangs there without loading. I haven't made any changes recently and I didn't install other programs during last week. I have Kaspersky internet securty 9 no viruses detected. Strangely everything works fine when i boot-up in "debugging mode" from boot menu.
btw, what is actually "debugging mode"? and please don't tell me "Starts Windows 7 in an advanced troubleshooting mode intended for IT professionals and system administrators." because that does not actually explain anything.
Any help appreciated ! thanks

later edit: i forgot to mention that before this happened, i shut down windows because Eclipse was not working(it was using 100% cpu every time i tried to write something or open/close a java file). Your help please.

I seem to have two problems that may or may not be related.

1) My browser has been hijacked by "your-search.com"

2) I cannot load any new program.

I have posted my hijack this log below. I'm running XP Media Center, SP1, w/ ad-aware, spybot, and eTrust EZ antivirus.

Prob 1) How do I keep your-search from returning? I've tried removing it with all of the above but it keeps returning.

Prob 2) Whenever I try to load a new program from CD it starts to load but only progresses so far then quits loading. The CD drive continues to spin for a couple of minutes then stops. My feeling is that this is related to trying to remove Symantec (Norton) AV. My guess is that there is something still in there that hangs the loads. But, as usual, I'm probably totally wrong.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Then I have to click close and that's it the programs will not load. I ran a virus scan and uncovered a Troj "Exploit Verify" I have taken care of that but still won't work at all.

I'm using XP and just did a recovery console for XP to recover a vital file. Now when I start my computer, it sits at the desktop loading for about five minutes. After five minutes, all the programs in the tray will load simultaneously. Then when I try to go to My Computer, control panel, help & support, etc., all the icons will disappear from the desktop and then reload after a few seconds, and thats it, nothing actually loads up. Also, with some programs, I will try to open it, hear the noise that an error message would make (but don't actually get a message) and then it just sits at the desktop as if I hadn't clicked anything. But some programs, such as Sony Vegas and Soundforge will load and run perfectly well. What should I do?

Check Event Viewer. Chances are very good you have Services/Startups that are having errors & problems and failing to load. Look under "System" and "Applications". Look for red-flagged entries that describe what's complaining and having problems.

Hi, I'm new to the forum and I'd like to first say I really appreciate this opportunity to get some help. My Gateway has been infected with something for months now it seems. (I'm far from a computer expert, but I did try a lot of various anti virus programs) Google also has been hijacked. A lot of times the computer would fail to even get to the sign on screen, so I've done the "restoring to an earlier point" option several times . The problem seems to have gotten worse over time, and about two weeks ago, no programs would load. No AOL, no Firefox, Media Player , and a lot of other random links that wouldn't activate such as certain things in the Control Panel. The little arrow in the task manager that points up was still there, but none of the things that are usually there were there anymore (except the volume and windows update, which I also couldn't load) I did system restore again a few times, which worked, but a few days ago it crashed while trying to restore and now the only dates available are recent ones that still have the same problem.
I've looked around the internet on another computer and tried a couple random things, such as disabling a lot, if not all of the startup programs from running, but still nothing. Even in Safe Mode, nothing really loads. Pictures will load but not music or videos. It doesn't seem like I can do much anything on my PC now. Did one of my virus scanners accidentally delete something important? I... Read more

I have a user on a NEW 745 Dell Optiplex. All updates, Symantec up to date etc.

They are unable to load certain programs: SAS, SPSS, Word and PPT are the ones I have noticed and so far it only occurs with her user name. Outlook and Excel run fine and a different part of SAS also loads properly. It's as if the problem only occurs with what I would think are memory intensive programs. The initial screen indicating the program is loading comes up and then just hour glasses until I have to end the task.

I've ran the diagnostics and no hardware related errors were reported. When I check the processes the CPU is under 20% use. No errors in eventvwr other than the hungapp that accompanies me forcing the programs shut down.

What are some other things I could check?

I have winXP and webshot installed. I want the webshot desktop program to start every time I boot the computer. I checked the msconfig's settings. The webshot program is listed to be booted every time. but it refuses to do so (must be manually started up). This is after I re-installed the software downloaded from webshot. Furthermore, i checked the tool section for Spybot's Search and Destroy (anti-spyware) program. It also says the webshot program is checked for start-up. I suspect the problem is from the past when I unchecked the program to be booted up.

So how do I make the Webshot program work again? Is it something has to do with registry settings? Where should I go? Thanks for your suggestions in advance...

Hi.

I know there are plenty of posts regarding load balancing, but I read all of them and couldn't find the answer for me. What everybody wants is to sum their internet links, what I want is kinda different...

I have two Internet links here, one 10Mbit cable and other 4Mbit ADSL.
What I want is a way to make some programs use the 10Mbit and others use the 4Mbit.
For example, force all the games to use the 4Mbit link, uTorrent and Firefox to 10Mbit link.

Is it possible? Could be a software.

Thanks.

A:Win 7 Pro Load Balancing to different programs

It's the same thing. Same problem. Same solutions: virtualization or load balancing.

Here's an idea I my brain just farted: if your games connect to fixed destination IPs you can route them through your 4mbit nic, leaving the 10mbit one as the primary path.
Start->cmd, run as admin. Type "route" and get busy. I'd start with "route print".

I would simply be trying to start a program, and it will just not load at all. I would check in task manager, and most programs that stall while loading would just appear with only 500K-1500K bytes of private memory. Interestingly, when this happens, task manager will load correctly, but trying to press "load processes for all users" will cause task manager to just wait forever. It will ignore all clicks on it, and will just give dings whenever I click on it. This problem does not remedy itself until i force restart the computer.

I tried running Speccy, but it would take about a half-hour for every category, and completely stopped at the graphics and storage categories. I ran it again in safe mode.

I dont know what I did, but suddenly both my computer running xp wont load both oregon trail (the windows DOS version) and even Doom wont work. They both get to the title screen, then they just stay there. The only thing i can think of that is different is i am using AVG antivirus instead of norton. Is it an update? or do I need an update? Any ideas?

A:Cant fully load DOS programs

If you think it is AVG you can right click on the AVG icon by the clock and choose Quit AVG control center and then test and see if the programs work.

Also, will they run if you launch their executables from the command prompt? Ex type cmd and at the prompt type C:\Program Files\Program Name\program.exe

Hi there, my sister was sent an email from FedEx, a new one that's been going around. She now cannot load any program. Any time you click on a program .exe has been removed and ask me to choose which program I want to load. This is running Win 7, has Eset smart security and really needs some help. Please have a look at this files and let me know what I have to do to clean this up.

The only way for me to run any of the programs for scanning is in safe mode. Otherwise when I try and load the file it loads, firefox and takes me to an windows shell page.

Eset said it found a trojan file in the C: programs memory and cannot remove it. I didn't want to delete it until I had instructions.

Hello! My name is Adam Ganong, I am an audio engineer. I have a DELL XPS 8300,and I recently installed an samsung 840 EVO SSD drive into it. I have my OS on the solid state, and then I store any of my large files on to my HDR.
Before I made the switch I downloaded all the drivers from DELL's website, and installed all the ones I needed when I started running of the SSD. Everything seemed alright at first, but now I've noticed that there is a slew of programs, that when I try and open them, they simply do not work! When I try and open catalyst control centre, it typically crashes, when I try and play a video off of WMP it crashes, When I try and open Diablo 3, it crashes. I have a mix of programs on both my SSD, and on my HDR that won't run, and both hard drives also have programs that will run.

The big problem here is that my Audio software Cubase 7, will not import videos, that is the biggest thing I am concerned with, but I feel like most of these problems are linked.

I'm not sure what I did wrong to make this mess up! I obviously did something wrong, or have neglected to instal something somehow... I've also had no luck troubleshooting it on my own, and I couldn't find any similar situations online. Any advice or tip would be appreciated!

Other useful info

I have recently been having an issue with my Windows 7 laptop.

About a week ago (maybe more) I ran the Partable Apps platform setup from my laptop to install on my USB stick. I believe it was either the next time I rebooted or just a few times later that it started doing what it is now.

Every time I boot it normally it starts up, I log on, it loads my desktop, network, and the other 4 things that make up my system tray bar. Then, I try to load something; say... Chrome. I click it. Nothing happens. I try the Quicklaunch bar. Still nothing (just the spinning wheel for all of 10 sec). I try clicking the start menu; it doesn't come up. Eventually it gets to the point that after I get sick and tired of staring at the desktop with my laptop blatantly refusing my commands, I have to force shut it down.

After the first 3 times of this happening, I ran the disk tools by pressing F8 at startup and selecting the appropriate one. I ran restore, memory check, filesystem check, and startup repair. Restore says there is no restore point; memory check freezes on 5% completion (21% of the first pass out of four); the filesystem check says there's absolutely nothing wrong; and startup repair says the same thing, plus this added on to the very bottom:

I can load it in safe mode and it runs quite a bit faster but I cannot load any spyware stuff or read cd programs either. It has a dvd and cd drive. Pentium 4 is the chip. I put ad aware and counterspy on it, and it went ok and tried to put spybot but it wouldn't load. I have hijack thhis on it too but do not know how to interpert what it tells me. Hi all, my PC has been driving me crazy. It takes up to 10 minutes to launch programs (iTunes) and games (such as CODWaW, not exactly demanding). Here's the specs:
Win7 SP1, E8400 Asus P5K MoBo, 250GB system HDD, HD7870, 4GB RAM, 160 GB + 1TB HDDs
Nothing spectacular, all stock speeds, old but running, sort of...
After getting fed up with this situation I formated the C: drive and did a clean install. After installing Windows 7, Security Essentials and CoDWaW I tried it, and it was much faster. Then MS sent its first 136 updates, then SP1. I also installed a printer driver (Epson), Office, Chrome and sw for my keyboard and mouse. And voila, back to the same old five minute launch time.
I've made sure that no programs except Security Essentials launches, and the 50% load is spread over both cores. I also changed the priority to high, but no changes in the launch time.

What could be causing Windows to do this?

A:Programs loading @ max 50% load

In task manager what is anything using a significant amount of resources? A wrong driver or even missing driver can do things of the such, after the windows updates and the driver you installed, one of the updated drivers could be incorrect or some might be missing.
As well, check "device manager" for anything with a yellow symbol.

Some programs are becoming slow to load or do not recognize their connection to a file extension. Most noticeable are Nitro PDF Professional which doesn't always start when I click on a PDF file, sometimes it does, some times it doesn't. Quicken is often slow to start, some times the window opens then it waits for the display, sometimes the there is a wait until the window even opens. Same for xplorer2 opening and even selecting another folder. Going back to Windows 7 with almost the identical installed programs/utilities (about 40) the "problem" goes away.

What are the causes and solutions?

A:Some Programs Slow to Load

I dunno, I use Quicken 2010, it always pops right open. What programs are loading when the computer starts? If you have certain AV programs, it may be performing extra monitoring on the exe files you are clicking on, before allowing them to start.

Hey, recently, out of the blue, I've been having a really odd problem. When attempting to launch several programs (the gimp 2.2 for windows, GAIM, and an Ultima Online client), they haven't been opening but simply loading up in memory (and not to their fullest extent, either). To see what was causing the problem, I ran the gimp 2.2 through OllyDebug to see where the loading stopped--turns out the loading simply stops on msctfime.ime. Any attempt to locate information on what this problem could be has come to no avail.

When I ran the Ultima Online client & GAIM through the debugger, mscms.dll comes up as the culprit. Even when I try to replace both these files--I come to no avail. It's not the file's that are corrupted.

Seriously, if anyone could help me out, it would be greatly apperciated .

So I checked their folders and seems some of have had the .exe deleted. I checked through my programs and some of them don't boot up, even though when I go to their folder the exe is still there.
System restore doesn't load either, I just get a
''System Restore cannot protect your computer, please restart your computer and run System Restore again.'' Restarting does nothing though
I've scanned with Avast, SPybot and Adaware and and after fixing the viruses its still like this.
Things have slowed down, and yeah, that's about it.
Thanks for any help in advance.

Hi, I just recently upgraded my computer a little. I changed the Motherboard, graphics card, CPU and memory. They were all installed by a professional, who also installed all the necessary drivers. The hard drive was o.k so the operating system was able to load back up as it was before. My problem here is that certain programs fail to start. When I try to start them, the hour glass comes up as usual, but then a message pops saying that the program " has encountered an error and needs to close". Other programs run fine though. It seems that it's only the newest programs which are having this problem.
Please don't rush to judgment, for the past two days I have installed all new drivers for just about every part of my system, including all updates for my operating system. This was done through the help of 2 different programs that scanned my system and indicated where new drivers needed to installed and where I could get them and install them. Basically I have all the current drivers, operating system and Direct X files.
It can't be a problem with files being damaged from the upgrade, because I checked on that by downloading programs from the internet after the upgrade and they have the same problem.

I tried straight away to sign into oovoo, but it wouldnt sign in.. so I tried skype.. and it loaded. Then I stopped the call after chatting for a while and I tried to switch over to my other skype account. It wouldnt sign in.. just like the oovoo problem.

Today, Google has been loading fine all day long under the google.co.uk address, but now when I try to load it, it comes up as if it cant load (like when you dont have a connection, but I can still load the google search engine by going through my gmail account and clicking on the search on the top toolbar. And Im using the internet now, so I know it works apart from that.

Anyone know whats going on? Im using a Acer Aspire 5733Z with Windows 7 64bit, if that helps at all.

Chris

A:Certain programs and websites wont log in or load?

2 minutes after I post this, google.co.uk now loads and works fine for me, but oovoo and skype are still down. Seems strange this..

I have been having this problem where after I login windows just sits there...
programs dont load at all.. i can click them too and nothing happens.. sometimes only my antivirus shows up in the upbox on the right side but other than that nothing..

After about 7 boot attempts it starts to work which is surprising!

This problem started 2 days ago.. so I thought it was my OS problem and reinstalled windows but the problem keeps coming back!
I feel like the Windows update restarts are causing it or something!

I have scanned my computer with malwarebytes and Avast with no results..

This is becoming REALLY annoying and i cant seem to find a good answer.

BTW I can boot into safemode

My specs are
windows 7 pro
Optiplex755
BIOS a19
Intel Pentium dual CPU e2160 at 1.80ghz
4gb ram

A:Programs dont load after login!

"Unable to construct command line" is the message I get when I tried to load Print Shop

I have Windows 7

Or maybe there is a way to convert their .pzp to a usable format.

A:Print Shop programs won't load

Hi,
I found this on Wikipedia:
"On January 15, 2010, a new version for the PC supporting Windows 7 titled The Print Shop 2.0 was released, published by Encore, Inc.. This version is not backwards compatible and has been poorly received. It is published in Standard, Deluxe, and Professional variants.
To address Windows 7 support for pre-2.0 projects, an incremental release to the old line, The Print Shop Version 23.1 was released in July of 2010."

Have you got the correct version? Have you contacted Encore Inc. to see if they know of a fix?

Richard

As the title says, my main computer will not load programs that need internet to function (e.g. Firefox, chrome, MSN, skype, iTunes, ect).

I think it might have to do with malware, but does anyone have a solution to this? I'm running windows 7 ultimate.

Hiya,

I am relatively new to these forums so bear with me!

I am in a predicament where I had a virus, spyware etc, my computer was pretty bogged down, having used spyware doctor and manually removed it all, i then ran a mcafee scan and it removed a couple of trojans.
As far as i can tell the computer is clean now! (only mcafee is running, spyware doctor was unistalled)

The problem with my start menu, on boot up it takes about 20 minutes to load and it is so slow i cannot even get far enough to the control panel as it just freezes.

I can open programs from task manager and they work fine. Everything is also hunkydory in safe mode.

Also if i try to run hijackthis, it scans about 3/4 and then stops giving me the server busy box switch to retry etc but this doesnt happen with any other programs!

I have tried temporary disabling various start up programs on boot from msconfig but that didnt work! starting to wonder if explorer.exe is corrupt!

Does anyone have any possible explanations? im tearing my hair out!

A:Can only load programs from task manager! help!

Maybe restart Explorer.exe.

Start up the Windows XP Task Manager and select the Applications tab.

Now select the New Task button at the bottom of the window. A new smaller window will appear. In it simply type:

explorer.exe

Last time I replaced my HD I came across the advice to partition it - so I made a partition each for Windows, programs, and data. Now, however I've re-installed Windows and realized that I can't just instantly access those programs as my fresh OS doesn't realize they are there. Live and learn.

So here's my first question - can I get Windows to recognize previously installed programs or do I have to re-install them as well? If I have to re-install all of my software I don't see much point in having a separate partition for software if this is the case.

Second question - Did I fail to do some sort of backup which would have made it so that a fresh install would recognize programs on a different partition?

A:OS reinstall - how to load programs from different partition

A lot of programs will need to be re-installed. Windows needs to have file and registry information from a lot of applications or they won't run. Some don't need to be installed and simply running them will write the appropriate registry keys and you're good.

For recovery purposes what I do is use Acronis True Image to back up my OS drive. Then if anything ever happens I just restore my image and install anything that was installed after my image was created.

WinXP system has picked up a browser hijacker and cannot start some programs. Installed and ran the latest versions of AVG and AdAware. I also ran CounterSpy. Found many problems which were cleaned but at reboot the problem is still there. The message is:

Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item.

Tried to run HJT but it also can't be found. Installed FIXSWEN.INF and was able to get HJT to run.

Here is the log.

A:popups and unable to load some programs

I read the sticky in this forum on unanswered log posts and it said to use the REPORT button, which I did. It said NOT to use the REPLY but there has been no response to the REPORT so I'm guessing I must be doing something wrong. Any ideas what the proper way to get this looked at is? Thanks

I have 2 PCs exhibiting the same problem, W7 Home (XPS 8700) and W7 Prof (Inspiron 580). After 24-48 hrs, any/all programs fail to load. They show up in Task Manager 'Processes' but fail to load. A program already running continues to run (e.g. IE or Chrome), but nothing new. The 'Services' window in Task Manager is kibosh'd ... the window is blank. The system will not shutdown properly (hangs on 'Logging Off') and I have to hard boot both. They both use Norton NIS, and that is my suspicion. Below is a partial list from the Events log, but I'm not sure that's it. Anybody seen this, and point me where to go ... I can't find anything specific on the web.

PS - how does MS Essentials compare to NIS for W7. Thanks.

A:Partial PC Hang - Programs won't Load

Good hunch. We've seen enough problems with Norton here over the years that are solved by uninstalling it that I would do that using the Norton Removal Tool, then replace it with MSE to test the difference: https://www-secure.symantec.com/nort...home&version=1

Then continue working through the other Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7

I first noticed a problem when i was unable to access vistas networking menu. On furthe inspection, I was unable to load programs such as itunes, iexplorer 7 and msconfig. I have attempted system restore but the restore has completed but the problem remains. Hijack This will not run in normal mode, safe mode only. I have run spyhunter 3, spyware doctor, spyware terminator and advanced spyware remover. I am running Norton Internet Security 2007 but another symptom was that this program gave the error 3038,107 and said my subscription had run out (this is not true as recently renewed!) as the networking menus do not work I am unable to rectify this problem. I also run AVG which has found no prolems.I would like to point out everything works in safe mode but hijack this does not work in normal modeLogfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2Scan saved at 14:40:42, on 25/02/2008Platform: Windows Vista (WinNT 6.00.1904)MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6000.16609)Boot mode: Safe mode with network supportRunning processes:C:\Windows\System32\smss.exeC:\Windows\system32\csrss.exeC:\Windows\system32\csrss.exeC:\Windows\system32\wininit.exeC:\Windows\system32\winlogon.exeC:\Windows\system32\services.exeC:\Windows\system32\lsass.exeC:\Windows\system32\lsm.exeC:\Windows\system32\svchost.exeC:\Windows\system32\svchost.exeC:\Windows&... I have Win xp sp2 running on an old custom build (1400 Athlon w/ 512 Mb RAM on a Shuttle mobo). It's been incredibly stable, except for the occasions when I completely botch something up by attempting something stupid (although this time I didn't do anything, I swear).

Now, though, it won't load any except a few simple (think notepad or abiword) programs; when I try I always get an error message (I don't remember ad verbatim, I'll copy it and repost tomorrow, but it's something about Windows program manager not being able to load the program).

I thought a defrag and a scan of the boot disk might help, but they won't run, either. My kid brother has been using the computer (I've been at work, haven't used that machine in a couple of weeks), and insists he hasn't done anything, either, that it randomly started and he rebooted and it quit, but rebooting doesn't help -- I suspect a corrupt system file. Does anyone know what's wrong and how to fix it?

Oh, btw, data recovery isn't a concern. I have a couple fully functioning Linux distros installed. My goal is to fix the Windows install instead of having to reinstall everything.
