Program windows too large on screen

Q: Program windows too large on screen

Hello,
I have just upgraded to a 15" lcd monitor. I have windows xp.
I have several instances where ...when I call up a program...
the window does not include the entire program...
Some of the program is off screen...I have tried tochange resolution...
and it still loads the program too big...i.e. if I had to click ok...it is not on the screen...
This problem occurs with several programs...it is a problem of resolution? or is there
a menu I can change....
Thank you.

am using windows 98. want to change montior to flat screen. tried a NEC but was told by NEC my 98 couldn't support 1024 x ?, so got a KOGI that had been hooked to an old 95. screen is fuzzy and windows are so large i can't reach the apply or ok buttons. in display there is a minus (-) in front of display adapters; the subtitle is NVIDIA Aladdin TNT2 and a minus (-) in front of monitors with the subtitle of GVISIONL5QX-TIA. Should the display adapters and monitors subtitles be the same? I think the NEC was NVIDIA and I think the KOGI is the GVISION. Any suggestions of Annie?

Hello, I recently started getting a black screen when trying to turn on my laptop, a Sony Vaio running Windows 10. I am unable to download the DM log collector tool since I cannot use my computer at all. It stays on the black screen even if I let it sit for hours. It's possible that I backed up a Windows 10 file when originally upgrading from WIN7 but I'm not sure and if so, it would be on an external hard drive. What can I do? Please help. Thank you so much.

A software application is too large for my screen. I use a mini laptop. Thanks.

A:program too large

Hi Joeee

There are a couple of things you could try.

Plug in a USB mouse and hold down the Control Button while scrolling with the Middle Wheel to change screen size.

A bit more fiddly, is Right Click on a blank portion of the desktop, choose Properties and Settings. Change the screen size to one that fits.

You may find an option in the Menu bar under View/Text Size.

In the listing of my programs in Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel my BitComet 0.60 program is listed as being almost 5 Gigs. Why so big? I was thinking that the program could be listed as being this large because it includes downloads that are being stored somewhere I'm not aware of, but the downloads would not be included with the size of the program. Also, in the Add or Remove Programs list it says that the last time BitComet 0.60 was used was two years ago, but I use the program regularly. Thanks for any replies.

A:CAN'T INSTALL LARGE PROGRAM.

No you shouldn't really because from your details, the program should just take up over about 10% of remaining free space which is no issue.
What is the problem you are experiencing exactly while trying to install this program? You will need to be more specific in order for somebody to try and help you.

A:Cant remove very large program

Try to open your program files and remove the folder. That will leave the entry in add/remove. next time you try to remove, if all goes well you will get a message that the program is not there and ask if you want the entry deleted. Let me know if it works.

At first I thought this was a problem with just Winamp, but now it seems that everything I download won't allow me to do this either.

I'll set the default player to whatever program I'm using (ie. Winamp), and then try opening a music file. No problem. But once I select a certain number of songs (not sure if it's based on total size or # of songs) and hit enter... it opens them up in a playlist in Windows Media Player instead of the other default player. They're all .mp3's too, so its not like there's one file in there that's a .wma or something and throwing a wrench into it... it's purely based on the number of songs.

What do I do?

Thanks

A:Cannot play a large playlist in any program other than WMP

I agree that there's an effect. It isn't unique to your computer and it seems to come into action on the sixteenth song selected and onward.
Unfortunately I don't know the answer to this.

My response is to open the songs with the player (I use VLC), dragging them into the playlist or using the player's own open with dialogue.

I need to compare 2 very large folders. One is a backup of the other, so I expect them to be identical, but I want to verify that each file is truly identical (byte for byte).

The folders have many subfolders and thousands of files, some over 1GB is size. So the solution must operate as fast as possible so it doesn't take days.

All I need to know is if there are any differences, and if so, which files are different. I don't need to know what is different within any files. If a file is different, I'll deal with that manually.

How can I do this? I'm fine using tools built into Windows 7 SP1, or using a piece of free software.

A:Program (or method) to compare two large folders

Well you could use copy changed files to get a report of files that exist in one directory but not the other.

Here's a comparison of my 64bit Programs directory compared with a mounted system image backup copy.

Test copy with no files actually moved.
So that's 8000+ files in each 2.5Gb directory compared in about 30 seconds.

If you use binary compare it will be a little slower.

Another utility I use is WinMerge but it's not really fast when comparing huge directories.

What is the size of the new monitor? Have you tried its Native resolution? Does the publisher of the game/s have suggestions? Could also be the graphics adapter/card can't support it.

Hey everyone, this is my first post on this site, hopefully not my last :)

Well my problem started tonight, I turn on my desktop, running core 2 duo and Vista, an I get to the vista login screen and my monitor goes on standby, Viewsonic 22" widescreen, I turn it off and turn it back on, everything is fine. This is just minor problem and didn't really bother me. Once logged in, I notice my icons, fonts, toolbars and start menu are all too large. I go to display settings and check resolution etc.. It is all fine!

I've gone through device manager and checked the drivers and monitor and everything seems too be fine. I have also scanned for spyware/viruses and its all clean. Kinda in a dilemma here and any help will be great!

This is very frustrating and I have not found this addressed in any XP support data I have or perhaps I am looking in the wrong category?

I brought my sister's compaq presario 5250/128 ram/ K-2 Duron processor to my house to do some maintanence, when I connected it to my monitor the icons were huge and the pages were too big to see past 3/4 down the page. In other words, words like 'ok' 'cancel' 'start' were blocked from view and unaccessable. I went into setting and tried to change the resolution to the right side but it would not move. So I removed the video adapter (in device manager) and rebooted and when it came back up it was the same way. My sister needed the pc back, so I sent it back to her house, just hoping that it would look normal on their monitor and of course it didn't. Before she brought it over to my house it was fine she said the icons were not like this, but now they are. I did not do anything to it except hook it up to my monitor, I couldn't even do any maintenance, the display was so awkward. At their house, I had them go into settings and again the slider would not go to the right, to make the icons smaller.

3. Close the application correctly (File > Exit).

If the auto-maximize button doesn't do it, try manually setting the size and then closing it properly.

I have the young fellow from next door's small 10" laptop an e-Machine eM350 with an Intel Atom N450 @ 1.66Ghz and 1GB RAM running a 32bit Basic 7 OS.

Have tried to get the resolution down to a level where everything fits on the screen for example the Google search page is so large the search window sits on top of the taskbar just about. The res is 1024x600 and I have tried to reset it but the only option is 800x600 and changing it is pointless as it defaults back to the 1024.

As it stands it is extremely exasperating to use as the opened Google page is frankly unusable as the bars at the top are huge taking up neraly a quarter of the screen and the taskbar which I have got as small as I can is still way too big. Thhe other thing that has got me beat is if I open internet options to set Google as the home page and the next tab I cannot get to the apply button - I can drag it up using the top bar and the up arrow but as soon as I let one go to apply the whole thing just drops back to where it was.

Any ideas please as have run out myself.

Hi, I wouldn't really classify this as a Windows 7 issue, but I don't know where else to post this. I recently bought a cheap TV (24" Orion) and decided it would be nice to have a second monitor for my laptop, however it doesn't quite work the way I would like it. I have my laptop connected to the TV with an HDMI cable. Anyways, I am not really sure how to explain it other than a pictorial representation, so I attached a picture to approximately show the problem. On the new TV, the edges are all cut-off and it gets annoying when I drag something to make it full-screen, then I have a difficult time dragging the bar or using the buttons/ tabs, etc. in general. (It's worse than shown in the picture).

Are there any sort of drivers or programs I can download to fix this? I just checked and downloaded all of my latest graphic drivers.

Any good solution would be immensely appreciated.

A:New TV-monitor Resolution Too Large for Screen/ Image Being Cut-Off

What is the make and model # of your laptop? Go to the manufacturers Support/Download drivers site type in your make and model # and download the latest Video Driver. After you done installing, Go to the Video cards Control Panel either by clicking the icon in the task bar, or by clicking it in Control Panel and change the resolution for one that works for the TV. You may have to create a Custom Resolution.

Hi there
I've been switching around between W7 / W8 / W8.1 for a while and all 3 have things to both like and dislike.

However one of the features that gets most people who are W7 die hards is the desire to retain the standard menu.

I used to think this too until I booted Windows 7 up with a very large 72 inch LCD monitor -- the menu looks absolutely HIDEOUS on a screen of this size !!! -- a small customised menu would be far better say like a custom toolbar with the XP small setting type of display.

(BTW it wasn't my monitor -- can't afford one of those yet - but was able to test one for a few days !!).

Is there any way to reduce this sheer waste of screen real estate. !!! Small size menu for example.

People these days are buying several monitors often quite large one's -- so I'm in favour of some new type of GUI -- I don't like the scrolling in W8 but W7's menu on a large monitor also is getting to be "Not fit for purpose". A flexible USER custom menu IMO would be the best option - but there's no command to create and launch a user defined toolbar from the start -- if there is please any Windows programmer post one and I'd be really grateful.

Cheers
jimbo

I am using windows XP with setting of 800 X 600 pixels. Most web pages in IE and emails in OE open too large for my screen and I must use the slider bar at the bottom to read the full page. Is there a setting somewhere to make these pages to open to size of my screen?

Thank You, tlh99

A:Solved: Pages open too large for screen

Many web designers, including myself, tend to ignore the 800x600 resolution as it tends not to be used very much these days, and its hard to create a site that looks good using 800x600 as a base.

Some sites will be "liquid" where the width is based on percentage not pixels, so the site will change width depending on your resolution.

Unfortunatly there isnt much that can be done on the web site front, other than increasing your resolution to atleast 1024x786 if you can.

As for the emails, does this happen with all emails? Or just the ones which are mainly made up out of images.

goal: run presentations on PC and using dual monitors, display on large
display screen ~ 20ft away in a conference room (w/o any systems in the room).
intent is to use wireless VNC connection from laptop to control pc running the presentation.

video screen will be at least 37" wide, have wide angle viewing.

No gaming or HDTV required, only good graphics for Powerpoint presentations.

Issues:

cable distance to pc
dvi vs hdmi
resolution for viewing powerpoint

Initial thoughts are to use an nVidia 9600 dual ported card and run it in 720p.

What do you think?

and add signal boost / filtering and audio+video in the same cable

First post here on the SevenForums! I'm only saving the tough ones for you guys! Here's the problem:

My client's computer was infected with a virus obtained via Facebook. I removed this and multiple other infections (and I'm pretty thorough with my scanning). She gets it back, starts working on it, and apparently her devices and printers icons are blank. Not missing, like with a "blank page" icon, just... blank. Here's the kicker: it only happens with large and extra large icons. It also happens with normal folder icons. When I change it to medium or lower, they come back. I've tried rebuilding the icon cache database several times, tried sfc /scannow, tried chkdsk, tried uninstalling any recent updates, etc... There have been no hardware changes, the hard drive has been tested as good (no bad sectors), her dual monitors are at a sane resolution, and I'm confident that the viruses has been removed. Trust me -- I've tried all the obvious stuff I can think of. Thanks and Good luck!

Hi again guys! This time I have another problem.

Most of the .exe files on my E: and F: drive have been turned into DOS exes. File sizes seem ok, but when I open them, they open a DOS window, which shows "Program is too large to fir in memory", then instantly disappears. This started happening the day after I installed this "Elite Proxy Switcher". My computer slowed down a lot. Windows Task Manager showed normal CPU usage, but some processes like svchost.exe, isafe.exe and some others were using over 10,000 K of memory usage. I installed this software called Security Task Manager and it found a file called svchost32.exe running and taking up an enormous amount of memory(around 95%). It also found a msa.exe. Both files have been quarantined.

However, now many exe files in E: and F: are turned into DOS exes. Even previous DOS exes like Turbo C++ won't run. I need help restoring these files.

Thanks in advance.

Hi RM2007 !

What's the maximum display resolution you can set in the display properties ? You probably need to update your video drivers.

Your computer is pretty old and there doesn't seem to be any drivers for XP available from Dell's website.

Found these drivers from Ati's website : http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/xp/legacy-xp.html. Yours should be the second one (under Rage Pro).

If your video card has the standard 4MB memory then once the drivers are installed you'll be able to set your display resolution to 1024 x 768 (85Hz).

About the run command, check that it's checked to appear in the sart menu properties :

Here is the list of the most notable processes
-explorer.exe = 50.000 K to 150.000 K
-wisptis.exe = 20.000 K to 40.000 K (there are two processes, I suspect one of them is a virus)
-winlogon.exe = 40.000 K to 150.000 K

Is it normal or it is definitely a virus? How to reduce these RAM usage?

A:Windows processes using large RAM

Quote:

I suspect one of them is a virus

You are probably correct in assuming there is a virus, as these 3 processes are a part of the Windows OS (Wisptis.exe is a system process which comes included with Microsoft Office Suite driver for Wacom Tablet, Windows ink services and tends to run alongside Adobe Acrobat Reader) Winlogon is the logon service where you logon to Windows with your user name and password.
You can also run Process Explorer to get a better handle on what is doing this.

Launch Windows Explorer. Select all the files/folder you want to compress (you can also use CTRL+click to add more files). Right-Click > Send To > Compressed Folder. The ZIP will be located in the folder you are workin in. There is a tutorial if you need more info : Zip a File or Folder - How To

If you want more features though, I recommend 7-Zip. It's lightweight, has a LOT of options, usually has better compression on ZIP (or you can use the 7z format which compresses even more), and is open-source : 7-Zip. It will add a context menu accessible via Right-Click in Explorer.

I have 2 drives, 80gb(boot) and 250GB (data) (both SATA), I backed up all my important stuff to the data drive, booted my XP disc, wiped the boot drive and away I went. The XP disc is an old, but proper one, that didn't have either service pack on.

I ran through all the reinstall bits and bobs, had a small problem with corrupting downloads that turned out to be Nvidia firewall, got everything patched and all ok but the data drive appears corrupted, it appears in 'my computer' but clicking on it gives me "F:| s not accessable, The file or directory os corrupted and unreadable".

Disc management in admin tools shows up a drive, as healthy, with a size of 232.88 GB, and as active.

I wondered if it was to do with the 48bit LBA addressing or anything else? It was so late last night I wasn't able to fix things and after running into a few things on the web, I physically unplugged the data drive and did the whole windows installation all over again but to absolutely no joy.

Has anyone else had a similar problem? Is there anything I can do? I need the data on this drive more than the PC itself!!

Thanks very very much for anything you can give - you lot have proved very very knowledgable in the past!!

Cheers again

Hi,

Welcome To TSF.

Sorry about the bad start but hopfully things will pick up.

First - If you have an Anti Virus Program run it (just on the Data drive) If you dont click here to use an Free Online Scanner
If that scanner does not work click here for another one.

Second - Install and run Ad-Aware and its plugin VX2 Add-on Cleaner.

Third - Install And Run Microsoft Windows Defender.

Last night, just before bed time, my wife informed me that she had seen, earlier in the day, a message indicating low disk space on our Windows 7 (Home Premium) Laptop. I took a look at the properties on C drive and it was down to about a half GB free space. This was on an 80 GB partition on which Windows is located. I ran Disk Cleanup and there is still only a bit less than 3 GB free space. I took a quick look at the properties of each folder at the root of C drive and found that the C:\Windows folder occupied about 48 GB. Isn't this way too much? Could this be related to Windows 10 to which we never upgraded? I'll look a little further this weekend to see if I can locate the bulk of the files, but I'm guessing I'm going to have to remove some Windows Updates or something, and if so, I'll likely need a little coaching on that.

Looking at the properties of my C:/Users/Pauline folder, it shows a size of 198Gb, yet opening the folder and viewing the size of each file and sub-folder, they add up to no more than 2Gb (I keep all the libraries and user data files on a separate drive).
Another user, myself, as C:\Users\Malcolm shows a size of 9Gb. Even this is much much larger than the sum of the sub folders, but I could live with that.
Going to folder options and showing hidden and protected files shows nothing in the way of very large files.
Any ideas welcome, as my C: drive is almost full and I don'y know why!!

Your best bet would be to download an application like SpaceSniffer which would give you a graphical view of where the consumed space is going.

It's real easy to use. Just open the zipfile you download, drag the application to your desktop, and launch it.

I see your specs as Windows 7. You may want to right-click on the application and select 'Run as Administrator' which might give you a better view into folders that might otherwise be restricted.

I know this is supposed to be a Windows 7 forum, but my problem is on a Windows XP machine. A lot of you experts learned your stuff on XP so probably have a good idea what the problem might be.

I have an HP XW4100 computer that I use to store backups. It doesn't have to be fast, and XP has worked well on that machine.

It has IDE and SATA ports on the motherboard, and I have added 2 x 4TB Seagate HDs connected to the on-board SATA ports. Using Seagate DiscWizard, I am able to split those drives into a 2tb and 1.6tb drive each so XP can partition and format them with MBR. So far so good.

Wanted to add some more 4TB drives, but there's no more SATA ports on the motherboard. Bought a Vantec PCI SATA card which uses the SiL 3114 chip and has 4 internal SATA ports. Installed the drivers, and when pluggin in an older 500g WD SATA drive, the OS sees it, I can partition it and use the drive.

When I plug a Seagate 4TB drive into that controller (even one that works with the MB SATA port), I can see the drive in device manager, Seagate DiscWizard can see the drive and partition it, but the drive will not show up in Disc Management so I can't use it.

I would conclude from this that the SiL 3114 chip has issues with large hard drives, while the Chipset on my HP has no problems. Strange though that the drive shows up in Device Manager and DiscWizard. Seems like a driver issue, but I've tried all the SiL drivers, and as I say, a smaller older SATA drive works fine.

A:Large (4tb) drive not seen by Windows, smaller ones ok

Have you tried partitioning your HD so that your partitions are < 2tb?

From my understanding XP doesn't support > 2tb drives.
