In Windows XP, fully updated, I have several folders full of mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

But all the figures in the "Duration" column appear to be in "hours" and "minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03", but what I want is "minutes" and "seconds".

Any thoughts as to how to change this?

I'm having this problem since few months ago. before I had installed a software named VMWare for my college's assignment in order for me to use Linux Ubuntu. but apparently it gave me a lot of problems until I decided to uninstall the software. after I uninstalled, all NEW USB devices such as external HD, flash drives and etc cannot be detected and windows always prompt "Found New Hardware" pop up message and require my windows to install driver software for my USB devices. I tried clicked the "Locate and install driver software (recommended)" but it still prompt out again the message. it happened for all new USB devices. I don't know why. maybe it happened after I installed the VMWare, I guess?

can someone help me with this? I cannot use my new flash drives and external HD for me to transfer my works. it's so tiring

I just put together a new computer:

PCCHIPS M863AG Motherboard
AthlonXP 2800+
512MB PC2700 RAM (I'm sure this works - although it may still be incompatible with the system)
300W PSU
Samsung 80GB HDD
Sony DVD/CDRW Burner
LiteOn Wireless Keyboard and Mouse
Integrated Graphics

After fiddling around with the motherboard and finding out that the motherboard shipped with the clear CMOS jumper in the 'ON' position (Wouldn't boot . . . what fun that was), I finally managed to get it to boot. Lo and behold, when I attempted to install Windows XP, two things happened:

With my SP1 Integrated install disc, the installation got as far as the initial blue screen where it loads up device drivers. Then it displayed an error "ntkrnlmp.exe cannot be found" or something of the sort. I rebooted, and then tried holding down F7 at this point. The computer then restarted, abruptly, for no apparent reason.

When I tried my SP2 disc, it simply restarted right after the 'Windows is inspecting your hardware' message before the installer even starts. It just kept going around in a loop. I tried various configurations of ACPI/power management in the BIOS. I tried using the 'optimized defaults' toggle. Nothing helps. The windows install simply refuses to work. Any ideas?

Hello everyone,

I'm rather new to fiddling with hardware and software. I've done a bit of reading, and managed to put together a (working) system, and am leaving my old laptop at home with my dad. About a year and a half ago, he converted the laptop to a dual-boot Linux/Windows XP Pro system with a GRUB boot loader. Everything worked fine until today, when we decided to flatten the laptop so that it can be re-used by my family.

Laptop Specifications:
Dell Inspiron 5100, purchased May 2003
2.4Ghz Processor
512Mb RAM
30 GB Hard drive
ATI Radeon Mobility 5100
CD-R/RW/DVD drive (don't know what speed)
Used to run Windows XP Pro/Knoppix

We started this morning trying to boot up from the Windows XP Pro install disc that came with the system. The first disc we tried wasn't recognized by the system, so we tried an extra Windows XP Pro disc (the first disc was recognized in other machines). Upon bootup, the install proceeded to "Inspecting system hardware..." and then stopped, at a black screen, indefinitely.

A little research showed that this is apparently a known problem in systems with complex partitions, or Linux bootloaders. We followed some advice found from that search, and tried a Knoppix Boot-from-CD, but it wasn't recognized either. Another Linux Boot-from-CD was tried, and it was recognized, but we were unable to reformat with that disc.

We booted into a third Knoppix Boot-from-CD, and used QPartition (or whatever it's called, I&... Read more

hello wise ones ...
the title pretty much says it all....
im curious to know if they are the same thing (a restore / a re-install)?
im actually asking this while biting down feeling like i know the answer but i think im kind of in denial.

~ im defining a reinstall as reverting back to factory condition with all the bloat-ware, etc., where you start all over from scratch.

~ im defining a restore as picking up where you left off from a back-up / image that was made previously.

wow ! in denial big times!

i have put a lot of work into getting my system to the way i want it. (changes in the services settings being the biggest one of all) and have installed three programs that i picked up for free and use regularly that will be inactivated if theyre uninstalled.

so if theyre not the same thing - and ONLY a Re-install gives you that fresh and clean feeling, how on earth can i quickly revert back to my preferred settings AND re-install my programs and the ones i mentioned above. the majority of my stuff is freeware but the ones i mentioned above are actually full versions that were being given away and i dont have serials for those.
is this even possible?
thanks all!

A:Solved: Is a "RE-INSTALL" & a "RESTORE" the same thing?

No they aren't (fortunately) the same. Your definitions of reinstall is more or less on track provided that you mean reinstall Windows. Restoring to factory settings is a reinstall from a disk or image provided by the manufacturer. System Restore however simply roles back critical system files to a previous date, leaving programs and files intact. It does however have a limited length of time over which it can roll back.

The best thing that you can do as far as keeping your software and settings is concerned is make and store a full disk image once you first set it up. To make sure you keep your files, simply get a regular backup going.

Unfortunately you don't want your main disk image to include all the problems that necessitate a reinstall. If you have to get rid of Windows you'll have to sacrifice programs and settings because it will be those that cause the present problem. Make an image once you either diagnose and fix the problems or reinstall and personalize windows.

Don't give up on the possibility of repair for the moment. If you are worried only about freshening it up there are techniques and tools to do that for you. If you are worried about something more serious there are plenty of people here who can advise.

Hey guys.
Can you pleas explain me what does Hardware Acceleration means and why is that when it is turned on, it causes a green screen on the video (with audio working).
It happened to me once in YouTube, where I had to go in to settings and unpick the "Enable Hardware Acceleration", then it worked!
And 2nd time similar thing happened in Cyberlink PowerDirector 10, when I imported .mp4 and flv video files and it showed me green screen with audio. After unpicking "Enable Hardware Decoding " it was fixed.
My Sony VAIO has:
CPU - Intel Core i5 M430 2.27GHz
GPU - AMD Radeon HD 6500M/5600/5700
Does this mean that I have a problem with my hardware, or maybe I need to set up something??? to ba able to use Hardware Acceleration. As I understand I should be able to use it!!??

Thank you

Hi, after a long time I came back, settled in Toronto I found myself in need of superior assistance from the pros.

Not my laptop but a friends, by chance during lunch he mentions his webcam doesn't work anymore which surprised me cause I had to hold onto his laptop for 3 weeks while he was out of Canada, in any case I take a look and yes, webcam shows in use by another application, yet the webcam looks off and even skype is off, so instinct kicks and AV is not working, Win updates won't connect nor MB will update...tried to run Kas online...install closes by itself, and so it happens with every other malware detection program I tried, so I tell him to don't use it while I come back the next day and take it home, he managed to install and run some programs after googling around, in any case I have the laptop with me and so I decided to get help.

In this case, I would reinstall Yahoo Messenger, and THEN uninstall it.

I have an old dual core system which I bought about 6 mths ago with win 7. *Has 3mhz dual core, C drive 50 gb space, 1 GB Ram.
-As it sluggish, I installed XP after using UBCD to partition and used my laptop's XP slipstreamed CD with its drivers to install.

I do not have an original xp cd as it got damaged but have a license and registered at Microsoft to enable. Had a couple of driver Ethernet & graphic problems but resolved. Its now working smoothly.

As I have to send it away to my hometown for work use where people may not be expertised, I have to give them a bootable CD in case of trouble.
So from my old xp cd saved on HDD, I used imgburn to create a bootable CD following all parameters and needed to test.

Now when system starts (cdrom first boot enabled) it goes to "Setup is inspecting your hardware..." screen and subsequently its just blank.
Could someone help as I need to resolve this.

A:[SOLVED] XP instal stops at "Setup is inspecting your hardware..."

used my laptop's XP slipstreamed CD with its drivers to install.

So, did you create an ISO image of your XP CD with IMGBurn? If so, it may not have gotten all of the files. Try it again.
Using an OEM XP CD from a different manufacturer is also a bad idea, as it loads drivers not specific to your hardware and may not load
But since your computer was Sluggish, I would expect that your HDD has some issues. Download the ISO image for Seatools in my signature and burn the image to CD with IMGBurn and boot off of the newly created CD and run the Short and Long tests on the HDD. If either test fails, the HDD needs to be replaced.

Last night I removed my old power supply and installed a new power supply and when I booted my computer for the first time with my new psu I got the boot error "NTLDR is missing." After researching for a bit on one of my working computers the most common reason I got for this error is bad or corrupt boot file, but I didn't change any other hardware other than the psu which is why I think I have a different cause for my problem. I used the Windows XP installation CD to see if I could shed some light on the problem and when I went to repair a windows installation it listed my drives as follows:

D Drive - Windows Partiton
E Drive - Partioned Space
Nomarked Drive - Partioned Space

Now I have three 150 gig HDDs that are usually labeled as C,D,E - the Windows XP recovery console AND Windows XP installation CD did not recognize the C drive as the primary windows installation anymore (as C). My board has 2 SATA hookups and 2 IDE hookups running currently. My C Drive and DVD drive are hooked into my SATA hookups while the other two HDDs are configured through my IDE hookups. I've had no problems with this setup for over a year now and I'm looking for something I may have done wrong so I don't have to wipe and start over again and lose all my data. I'm 90% sure I installed the new psu correctly. The 24 pin, 8 pin, and all sata/power component cables are in the correct drives/fans, etc. Thanks for any help.

Hey all, this came up as a side effect during the epic battle I've been having with my computer all day, but I can't tell what's wrong or what it's effecting. When I boot up the following appears on screen, at the first screen I see:

"Detecting Primary Master - Maxtor 98196H8
Detecting Primary Slave - None
Detecting Secondary Master - Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-103
Detecting Secondary Slave - ASUS CD-S400/A

Harware manager found an error. Enter power setup menu for details...

Press F1 to continue, F2 to enter setup"

Now I'm not very familiar with that setup screen so this is where I need help. How do I determine what is wrong and what needs to be changed? As far as I can tell everything is working on my computer. I just formatted my C drive and reinstalled XP from CD so I know the CD drive works. My C: and D: drives are visible and accessible and my DVD-RW drive can read data if I put a CD into it (I haven't tried burning anything yet as I'm installing SP2 and other updates now)...

Does anyone know how to solve this? Thanks a lot
EDIT: I just went inside and dug around some more without changing anything and noticed something in red: the power fan RPM I opened the case earlier today to make sure my video card was seated right and lifted up the power supply. Is it possible I unplugged its fan or something? Is this fixable?

A:Solved: "Hardware manager found an error..." during boot

Thats probably the error, its likely detecting that the power supply fan is not working. Check to see if it came unplugged (its probably plugged into the motherboard, or should be, to enable it to be monitored).

I installed a new firewire card into my new Dell computer. Closed the case, started up the computer which recognized the new hardware. Then I plugged the dv into the firewire and downloaded about 10 minutes of video from my minidv camcorder. Now, after that, about an hour later my screen went blue with a "hardware malfunction" message. I restarted the computer and it booted up ok, but about an hour later another blue screen with the same message. I needed to get a lot of work done that day so I just took out the card and set it aside for now so I wouldn't have to keep restarting my computer because of the error message. I have been looking over possible things to try and these are my ideas: 1) search for updated driver, 2) some kind of compatibility check, 3)dell's diagnostic check.

AM I on the right track to getting this card to work? Or, is there something I have missed that might correct the problem?

Let's try this version of gmer.

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here to your desktop. Double click the exe file.
If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run on NO, then use the following settings for a more complete scan.

Click the image to enlarge it

In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Ensure the following are unchecked Sections
Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
Show All (don't miss this one)

Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and attach it in reply.

Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

I'm not the only person to have this problem. I received a private message from a member of another forum where I posted about this problem several weeks ago. That person also has the same problem with the duration field.

Long Story:

I was at the local library "hot spot" using my T-21 Thinkpad notebook and having trouble connecting to the internet. I normally use a Realtek wireless LAN card, and switched to a US Robotic card, I don't have a driver CD for this card so I was unable to connect.

When I went back to the Realtek card I started getting a message "New hardware found". This is after the US Robotic card was removed. Now every time I boot up I get the "New hardware" message, even when there is NO CARD in the PCMCIA slot !!!

I went into - Control Panel > Add New Hardware and found "Unknown device" message [even when NOTHING is installed] !!! There is no option to REMOVE new hardware only how to further install it.

I suspect I will have to go into the registry and do some editing, BUT I have no idea where to start.

Any advice/suggestions ???

Hi Guys n Girls,

As from the thread title, I'm not sure where I should post this one ATM. I'm suspecting a virus, but the symptoms may well be 'hardware" as well.

Basically, my system will, occasionally, take a few attempts to boot. What happens here is, it starts to boot, then just turns off midway. Some days no problems other days..grrrr! Other days it will boot up fine but then for no apparent reason, it will close all apps and turn off. Just as if you had held the power button in for a few seconds. Could run all day...may only last minutes before shutdown. Boot it again and it may run for ??????
For the most part it runs OK so I'm hoping it's a power supply issue.

Have run the usually AVG and malware programs, nothing really drastic shows up.

So what's your thoughts? VIRUS or not???

Kind Regards

A:Does this sound "Viral" or "hardware" to you?

Hi Guys n Girls,
Had a day off work today so got to have a bit of a play and monitor the PC all day without others rebooting and stuff. Shut itself down and tried to reboot itself on a couple of separate occasions. Came up with a reboot error suggest the PC may be overclocked etc. Sorry didn't write down, thought I'd do that next time. Typically it hasn't done it since.

All programs and apps appear to be working as they are supposed to, it just powers down whenever it feels like it.

Now I'm thinking it's a virus in there somewhere. HJT file here............

The following was displayed in 'Automatic Repair' on startup:

"The operating system couldn't be loaded because a critical system driver is missing or contains errors"
"amdkmafd.sys" "0xc000007b"

I had installed the new windows 10 anniversary update (1607) and after finally sorting out everything to my liking I decided to boot up Radeon Settings to see if there was an update for the driver from AMD.

I was greeted with a message saying that the AMD driver was either missing or wasn't working properly and that I should go to AMD to download and install the correct driver.

Obviously confused as to why it would be missing or had errors I continued to download AMD's auto driver detect tool and ran it.

In the 'checkbox' stage of AMD's auto detect tool I saw that under all the items was a message saying that no version of that item was installed which I found rather weird that the drivers don't exist and the culprit initially points to the windows update I just completed.

I continued with the install and it was at that point when I experienced the BSOD.
The computer didn't restart after the BSOD so after some waiting I restarted it manually.

It then booted into Automatic Repair and the obvious route after the computer won't start due to the missing or corrupted system driver would be to use a recovery disk or USB.
Sadly I have neither.
(I have restore points but obviously can't get to them)

Hello - I've repeatedly tried and failed to install Service Pack 1. I have run the update readiness tool, and have run chkdsk and sfc. I've tried installing through Windows Update, as well as downloading the standalone installer from Microsoft.

The former results in an "unknown error"; the latter results in a window saying that "the specified service does not exist as an installed service" almost immediately after trying. A similar message has come up occasionally in recent days when trying to install a couple of other programs.

I'm currently out of ideas and would appreciate any help. Thanks!

Is the time to "Upgrade from vista to 7 supposed to be wayyy longer then it would to do jsut a clean install? (For example, hanging at 18% for a while while installing during upgrade)

(posting this since i cant get any replies to a previous topic)

A:Install time difference between "Upgrade" and "Custom"

The upgrade process will always be longer, and sometimes considerably. The upgrade process has to move/relocate previous files and keep certain registry entries based on software already installed. Did the upgrade eventually complete? (it's a silly question but you could be dual booting). If not then it could be a bad burn and your systems is taking it's time trying to read the install files from the DVD.

My office just upgraded, and I can no longer use Windows XP. On this system, I was able to add a separate taskbar to facilitate quick access to commonly-browsed folder locations on our vast network, and another one expedited the launching of useful programs and lists. Each task on each taskbar was represented with a big custom icon to save eye strain. I had them installed in opposite vertical margins, and they were set on auto-hide to keep them out of the way when not being used. Just move your mouse pointer to the left or right margin, and BAM! Sorry for the cliche, but I really got used to the convenience of what I had set up, and I just don't think I can be as efficient without anything comparable.

Now there appears to be nothing comparable in the Windows 7 GUI, and it's making me sick with rage! I see only the option to put a "toolbar" on an existing "taskbar", and no option to create any additional taskbars! This cramps up your one-and-only taskbar, plus the tiny toolbar access buttons require way too much precision for anything that's supposed to be quick. When you've figured out how to bring up that ridiculous button, the list that it yields is small enough to cause painful eyestrain - nothing efficient, much less cool about this at all! I have seen customization options in other OS GUIs that may have resolved some of these issues, but I see none such in W7.

I have tried every google search string that I can think of, and found... Read more

When our website users click on an html attachment embedded on a web-page in IE9, the download manager will not display the "Open" option. It will only display "Save" and "Cancel" which our users don't like, having to save the

Is there any setting to tweak , which will display all the 3 options for HTML attachments as well?

As you know, the Open-Save-Cancel dialog box helps you prevent your computer from affecting by virus while downloading.
So I suggest you test to reset all zones to a lower level temporarily and then please attempt to download this html attachment again.

However, since you can normally download the other documents, I suspect there is some restriction in the website which you are trying to view. I recommend you to contact the administrator of that website if possible.
could you please send me the link of the website from where you are trying to download the html attachment?

I am hoping that someone can help me with what may be a complex question.

I have a spreadsheet, similar to the demonstration file I have attached. In it, there are a range of columns. One set of columns (A - D), shows a list of numbers that are references to items in a store, and it also shows their location in the store, so it acts as a floor-plan. The next column (E) lists those items again to show the dollar amount that those items have produced in total sales (F).

So, what I'd like to do is to add a conditional formatting to show me the "cold" and "hot" spots on the floor-plan so I can see where sales are most concentrated. I would assume that this would be done with a colour scale (using the range of values in column F to work itself out)?

Either way, the figures in column F would change weekly, so the relevant cells in columns A - D would need to automatically change when they're matching cells in column E - F change.

I hope this makes sense, as it's difficult to explain, but any help that someone could provide would be greatly appreciated.

I recently built a call log database in Access 2007 for my team to use when calling agents on our top errors we see from a vendor's error report. My boss is requesting a report to see how many items have been resolved

I have a query started and I am trying to complete this task in a single query (if possible) instead of several queries (as I've done for a couple other things).

I have 3 tables I'm using: Assignment, AgtInfo and CallLog
Joins as follows:

Fields in the results: Assignment.assigned_analyst, CallLog.rpt_mnth, CallLog.resolved

Resolved is a yes/no field. I've done a query that converts the -1 to a 1, so that the sum is a positive number for the "Yes" values. I'm not sure how to enter the expression to subract the "Yes" values from the total number of values (yes/no) to get to my "No" count.

Essentially, I'd like the results to display as:

assigned_analyst, rpt_mnth, CountYes_resolved, CountNo_resolved

Somehow the connection is just not clicking in my brain with everything I've read though searches. Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

Installed Win 7 SP1 with media refresh from (X17-58997). Made it a bootable dvd with MS USB/DVD Download Tool. Booted from dvd and used "custom" install option. I did not reformat nor set partitions (this is where I maybe goofed?).

My disk mgmt ended up looking like this:

BUT, I also have a windows.old file which I understand only appears after a repair. Also, I thought System Reserved was supposed to be 100 MB and mine is 350??

So do I have a clean install or a repair install? There have been a couple of glitches (display adapter acting up and WMP initially not playing any files until I reinstalled mf.dll file).

Any comments? Help? Suggestions? Thank you in advance.

A:Confirm "clean" vs "repair" install from .iso?

With Windows.old, doesn't look like a clean install to me.

You didn't have to "format" or "set partitions", but you should have deleted ALL existing partitions on disc 0----if you wanted a clean install. Deleting all partitions turns the entire disc 0 into "unallocated space" and you then install directly to the unallocated space---without directly partitioning it.

Was your E drive disconnected when you did the install to C? E should not be "active".

I know next to nothing about Windows.old--maybe you can just delete it instead of a re-do, but a clean install is not going to have it.

I've seen System Reserved vary in size, but not sure I ever saw 350. But you should have deleted it as well.

however, this fix created a new problem - - now all the info that used to be under "artist" or "album" is gone! any fix? "date modified" is still there, but i like to sort my mp3 folders by artist, and now it does me no good.

by the way, when i now click on an mp3's properties, summary tab, and go to advanced, all the artist/album info is missing from there too.

from doing a search, i see that the way to undo the original fix is to run "regsvr32 shmedia.dll", but then i think i will have errors with large avi's.

Hi TechGuy,

I'm having some recent problems on my laptop. When I log-in and start using it, the performance starts slowing down. When I look at the Task Manager, I notice that the task called Explorer.exe takes up a lot of my CPU. In a couple of minutes, I also start getting Internet Explorer windows to pop-up on my screen (I normally use Firefox) with advertisements suggesting that my computer is infected and some software downloads that could help. I recently installed McAfee Total Works, or whatever they call their 10-in-1 software which is supposed to do it all. I ran several scans, and on some of them, if did find and disable the Generic.dx trojan. Even though it claims it is doing something, I don't notice any changes - Explorer.exe continues to bog me down, and the IE windows keep popping up to the point that I cannot use my computer effectively anymore.

I have an XP machine which I only ever user myself (as in, there are no other users on the machine, no guest account, and it logs in without a password).

I'm trying to sort out my expansive and bloated Start Menu Programs list, but it seems that there are two separate lists. One for "Joe" (the main user account) and one for "all users", I guess because some programs give the option of installing for just one user or for everyone.

All of the programs show up in the Start Menu when I click on it, but when I go into Windows Explorer to try and sort them out, there are two separate folders;

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs
C:\Documents and Settings\Joe\Start Menu\Programs

I know I can move them around in these folders (ie; putting them in related groups, such as "system tools" etc), but can I move all of them from the main user to the "all users" folder, (or vice versa) without any problems?

I added a slave drive to my Windows XP Pro computer, and it appears to work properly.

However, when I open the "Documents and Settings" folder (on the slave drive E:\, which is Windows XP Home Edition -- not XP Pro), I do not see any of my documents, sub-folders, etc. There should be MANY sub-folders (inside the "My Documents" folder which isn't even visible), with hundreds of documents, jpgs, etc. within it.

When that drive is installed as the Primary drive in my other computer, the User "Larry" (which is me) has all Administrative privileges. On the computer that I'm running now (with the slave drive in it), I also have Administrator privileges. I own both computers.

My User Name "Larry" is password-protected when I login to Windows (when the drive is Primary and installed into my main computer (not this computer with XP Pro).

I've tried clicking on all the users; Administrator, Default User, Larry, Guest, etc. (Note: I get an "Access Denied" error when clicking on the Guest "Documents and Settings" folder).

So, the questions are:

1. Why can't I see any files or subdirectories in the "Documents and Settings" folder on the slave drive?

2. There's supposed to be a folder named "My Documents," but I can't find it. Normally, that path is "C:\Documents and Settings\My Documents".

We have four machines, 3 running XP Home and one running XP Pro. The front machine has XP Home on it and I cannot open any of the shared folders for this machine on any of the other three machines even though they all have the same workgroup name.

They are all connected via CAT5 cable and we have a Netcomm NB5 ADSL2 modem/router, a Netcomm V300 Telephone Adapter(VOIP)/modem and an 8 port switch in the boss's office. And the front computer's folder/s and drives that I have chosen to be shared are listed under "The Internet". Does anyone know why this is and how I would go about correcting it?

Thankyou for your help and time,

System: Acer Aspire one netbook.
Win XP home ed. SP3

Synopsis of issue:
Got this comp. from my company for a new line of work I started. Was "deep frozen" when I got it and was useless to me in that state. Got it thawed and it suddenly wanted to do loads of updates, so I let it. Apparently I was not careful enough & got the "XP antivirus 2012" malware.

Eventually conquered that beast and installed avira free. almost immediately avira picked up on the "html/infected win.gen2" malware. I quarantined, deleted, scanned comp. w. avira, rkill, & malwarebytes. all scans came up clean but I now have no connectivity. wired conn. continually tries to acquire network address and w.less has limited or no....

Not my router or modem as I have 2 home comps actively cnctd as I type this. Also tried multiple other networks w. same neg. results.

After loads of searching and t/s'ing I believe I have found the root of the problem: When I look under "services" I found that "netbios helper", "Network Location Awareness" & "dhcp client" are all not started.

Trying to start them results in failure b/c some "dependencies are marked for deletion". the afore-mentioned 3 things are dependent upon the Netbios over tcpip and tcpip protocol driver.

Those drivers are in the system32/drivers folder but I cannot find a "non plug and play" section in the device manager. Yes, I looked under ... Read more

Hello Gunnersfan13,

I do see the problem and I'll have to ask you to please stop any more action on your part to resolve this yourself or you'll make my job that much more difficult. :)

You are still very much infected with ZAccess. I need to see the dds.txt. (You posted, and attached, only the Attach.txt produced by dds.scr)

Run dds.scr again, and post the contents of the dds.txt.

Next, open Notepad and copy/paste the contents inside the quote box below, into Notepad.

regedit /a afdexport.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\currentcontrolset\Services\AFD"
notepad afdexport.txt

Save this as afdexport.bat Choose to "Save type as - All Files"

Double click on the .bat file & allow it to run. Then post the log which it produces

Also, download SystemLook from one of the links below and transfer it to your desktop.

Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:

Click the Look button to start the scan.
When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
Note: The log can also be found at on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

Hi and THANKS for being there! This is primarily a term definition question. I don't find any clear answer in my user's guide.

I've got this terrific TV card installed, very fancy, very feature-rich.

I've got this terrific add-on AGP card installed, very fancy, very feature-rich. But I'm thinking that's beside the point. (It's a nVidia Geforce FX 5200)

This TV Tuner/Capture card dates back a ways; bought it for my old Windows Millennium machine and I remember that it worked just GREAT. It has the brand name "Brooktree" but that might just be the chipset or something. Anyway, I abandoned the TV add-on when I upgraded to a newer Windows XP machine in early 2007. I couldn't find the right driver though it worked pretty fairly with the old driver for most TV stations, it didn't work perfectly. I ditched it at the time.

I recently visited and searched diligently and finally did find a perfect driver for that TV card for XP. I am sure it is the latest and best driver available, so that is not even an issue.

Since I no longer subscribe to cable, I can use this old card to watch only channel 3, as output by my VCR. (The card also has FM radio, which works great!)

Here's the thing. A very itty-bitty teensy slight snag. When I initiate the TV Tuner, it always starts up in what they call "Preview mode". There is sound but no picture! No problem, I just tell it to go into the alternate mode, "... Read more

Hello, TSG!

Just yesterday I was using the computer normally until I got a Blue Screen. Getting a blue screen is usually something normal that occurs to my every so often, so I didn't mind it and rebooted the computer normally. However, I got two more blue screens within the next hour. The 3rd time rebooting, my computer starts to act strange as if it had a virus. Upon powering up the monitor would just display a black screen with two lines about something --- which I don't remember, sorry --- and stayed like that unless I plugged out the power cord or held on the power button to shut down. Then when after a few tries it boots and displays a message "Floppy Disk Failure" and "Drive 1 not found: Serial ATA, SATA-1" (and the same message for Drives 2 and 3) show up. Also it asks me to continue loading by pressing the F1 Key.

When Windows loads the first time, it displays a message saying a bunch of hardware has just been installed and ready for use. Also, my internal clock resetted itself back to Monday, November 07, 2005 (Which, if I recall, is the date when I got the computer) and my speakers do not work.

TL;DR Version
3 blue screens within a short time
Floppy disk fail
Drivers 1-3 not found: Serial ATA, SATA-1-3

Anyway, I browsed through Google but I haven't seen anyone with both problems. I disabled my Floppy Disk Drive and that message doesn't show up anymore, but the others do and my computer still isn't fixed. I ran a vir... Read more

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer

After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
Choose your usual account.

In Safe Mode, right click the folder and choose Extract All,
Open the extracted folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the script.

Current situation: 2 minutes remaining in a repair installation of WinXP Home, I get an error with a large X and the words "has not passed Windows Logo testing." Below that, it says "This software will not be installed...."
If I click OK or turn off at this point, the pc reboots and restarts the setup program at 39 minutes remaining. If the CD is not in place, I get a blue screen asking for the CD.

Anyone know if this is salvageable?

Thanks, Kimmer

I cannot clean install windows 7. Im getting nervous because I need this desktop for college.

What happens:
Install normally, freezes at completing installation. At reboot, services start and then an error message stating that an error occured happens, asking to restart the installation.

What ive tried:
-Removing all USB drives (even my USB keyboard, no keyboard and mouse second half of installation doesnt help either)
- Shift-F10 at error message, and starting explorer.exe (starts to do things, ends up logging in a system user with not even enough features for safe mode)
-Removing graphics card for onboard
-Removing sound card for onboard
-Removing secondary monitor
-Removing second hard drive, not being affect during installation
-drive has had partitions wiped by installation cd, using the "New" option not the format, to allow the extra partition to be created for windows.
-Set sata to AHIC in Bios
-APIC disabled
-installing vista basic(my only version) and upgrading to 7 professional (incompatable)
-36x and 64x tried, same problems
-its downloaded, student software, burned at 4x rate for better burning.
-Vista does install, but not 7
-Ran check disk around the error prompt, came out clean.
And probably a few other things...ive spent a long time on it today and yesterday.
any...any ideas?

After a year's subscription of Norton 360 expired, a virus took over my system (run by Window's XP Home Edition 2002) and any attempt to install anything to clear it was blocked. I'd decided to purchase a new operating system and purchased Windows XP Professional 2002. In attempting to follow the Microsoft's instructions (published on their "Support" site) for a clean install, I can't get past "install". Nothing happens. I'm not sure if "partitioning" or "formatting" the the hard disk is necessary. The site suggests this as a consideration in the process of a "clean install"

Quite honestly, I'm so fearful of the virus that has my system in a shambles that I'm hesitant to leave the new disk in the computer for fear that somehow the virus might affect it. But I desperately need to have my computer back and can't afford the fees for the assistance that Microsoft wants to charge me after buying the operating system and the antivirus software. I thought this would be as easy as putting the new operating system disk in the d drive and the system being wiped clean.

Well, I hope this is the correct forum considering I don't actually have XP Pro installed yet!

Many moons ago (June 2004) I purchased a Dell Inspiron 8600 to take to college. It served faithfully (including after The Great Red Bull Spill of 2006) until several weeks ago when the hard drive failed. No big deal, it's mainly my Netflix computer anyway. However, I'd still like to have it back up and running, so I purchased a refurbished 40gb hard drive off Ebay. I installed the new hard drive and checked to see that it was recognized by the BIOS (it is). When I booted up the computer it said "No boot sector on hard disk. No bootable devices -- strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility." Of course, I understand that's normal because the hard drive doesn't have anything on it yet.

Here's where the problems begin.

I have the Dell-issue XP Pro installation CD. I changed the boot order in the BIOS so that it would first boot from the CD drive. However, I got the same "No boot sector on hard disk. No bootable devices -- strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility" error. Well, that CD drive has a history of acting up (despite being recognized by the BIOS), so I went out and got a USB CD drive (the kind with two USB plugs; one is for extra power I guess). Again, I changed the boot order in the BIOS to start with USB. I got the same "No boot sector on hard disk. No bootable devices -- strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup ut... Read more

There's a bit of a back story here...don't know if it'll help but it'll show how I got here.
First started with trying to install SP3 and quite a few updates. I downloaded them, installed them, and on restart got the stop 0x24 code. I did some research and found a way to remove SP3 (through Recovery Console I think) so I did that and then got stop 0x8e code with "SASKUTIL.SYS". Again did some research found out it had to do with Superantispyware, so I disabled that file in Safe Mode and my pc went back to working, although start up was a bit slow, I then uninstalled Superantispyware :(

Second I started removing most of the updates that had installed along with SP3. I figured they were the cause of my pc starting up slower. Also Windows Media Player 9 wasn't working now (something about it not being properly installed I think...not sure exactly what came up, didn't write it down). So I'm going through the updates and removing them one by one and uninstalled this one update(didn't write it down and am now kicking myself), after unistalling it my external hard drive and mouse stopped working. The keyboard was still working and I was able to restart Windows. However on restart I got "Process1_Initialization_Failed" stop: 0x6b(0xC000007A, 0x00000008, 0x0, 0x0). I did some research on this also and didn't really find anything on my particular problem. So I ended up doing chkdsk /r. I tried to update a WinXP computer to Win8.1. The installation failed (longstory...not worth repeating).

Now at boot the screen appears offering the choice to boot to Windows Install or to the previous Windows Installation. The Windows Install is the default, so someone has to be ready to make the choice for the previous Windows installation, or the system will try to boot to the failed install. That causes a crash and an endless cycle of attempts until someone happens along to intervene and select the other choice. So if the power fails or an update installs, the machine goes into that endless cycle unless someone is present.

So how do I get rid of the Windows Installation choice. I've checked the boot.ini's not there. There's got to be a way to go back to booting directly to the original XP OS. But I'm stumped.

Any ideas? Thanks In Advance.

A quick question: I reinstalled the W7 OS in an effort to get a suddenly-dead mousewheel to start working again (didn't help, so that's a separate item for the Hardware forum,) but in looking through the Temp files I've got a bunch of stuff I didn't see when I first installed the OS: "ASPNETSetup_0000x" (with x=0-7,) "dd_clwireg," and numerical variations on "dd_wcf_CA_smci_20130602_xxxxxx_xxx."

Are these just some new legit stuff included in one of the MS Update files, or is this some kind of hackware? 'Net searches talk about stuff for Visual Studio and "SQL developer" and .NET Framework, etc., so I'm righteously paranoid.

Hi, From what I found, looks like this error is caused by either a bad CD disk, a smudge or mark on the CD, or bad RAM chips.

Advice: Rinse the CD with warm plain water and pat dry, try again.

Try a different CD drive.

Copy the i386 folder to hard drive and install that way.

Change RAM.

Your XP CD might work in other computers---I read that at many of the results searching in Google. Seems to be a problem with the hard drive, too. Did you delete all partitions? You might have to wipe the drive with a utility> I use KillDisk, here:

"Install" option is missing from the context menu for *.inf files.
Google gives many results, but all considering the same problem for Win95/98/2000, and not for XP which is my OS.

It is probably a registry problem, since it is the same case on my both computers with same software, and different hardware.
I've tried everything I knew, but can't move a bit.

I have one more problem with context menu; WinRAR "extract" options are present, but not working for *.rar files. They do work for other archives though. This is not such a big problem, but I am mentioning it beacause there is a possibility that both are connected.

I desperatly need to install an *.inf driver. No way around. I NEED to get back "INstall" option in the context menu for *.inf file drivers.

Here's my set-up:
HP Pavilion desktop, P4 2.8Ghz, 1Gb RAM

My problem is with the screen resolution.

I had a long-term spyware issue that I couldn't shift without wiping the machine. But because I never got round to making a backup CD like I was supposed to (no XP CD was supplied), I bought and installed XP Home OEM.

Everything is working fine, except I'm stuck in 800x600 resolution (I had 1024x768 before). If I try to go larger, the screen goes fuzzy and I get an error message "Attention - signal frequency is out of range. H 35.5 Khz, V 87 Hz. Please change signal timing". After 10 seconds or so, it reverts to 800x600. I didn't touch the monitor during re-install.

In Control Panel / Display / Settings / Advanced / Monitor, the Monitor Type is 'Default Monitor' and the Properties button is greyed out. The Screen Refresh Rate field says "Use hardware default setting", no other options available.

The monitor was plug-and-play when I first bought it, but I've downloaded the drivers from iiyama's site. However, their re-install instructions require me to use that greyed-out Properties button...

Pressing 'auto set-up' on the monitor doesn't help. (Haven't tried 're-set to factory settings' though - I'm worried about what that actually does). The monitor is not (no longer?) listed in Device Manager.

I'm trying to keep all my business-related "stuff" in my business file folder. Is it ok to "store anything" in a file folder? For instance, I keep all business-related docs & spreadsheets, but also images (instead of in My Pictures folder) and .exe setups (instead of in my Program Files)... is this ok for a pc? Or does it cause it confusion?
Thx so much, and please bare with me cus I guess I'm still considered a "newbie"
Summary of my Q: Can I "download" anything anywhere? Can I "unzip" anything anywhere? And can I "install" anything anywhere?

A:Solved: Can I download/unzip/install stuff "anywhere" on my pc?

You can download to anywhere and unzip to anywhere (unless given particular instructions to the contrary). The only criteria are that you have permission to access the folder (You cannot for example download to someone else's user account) You can also often leave program installers wherever you like though some big programs will make a fuss if you try to install.

In terms of actually installing the program it will depend on the program being installed. A decent installer will provide you with the option of installing to a different folder, so that is again probably a yes. The option may be hidden behind an advanced install, custom install, or similar button during the process. However I would be inclined to stick to using Program Files as the default unless you have a particular reason not to. Having programs mixed up with your documents and other files is normally a recipe for disaster.
One thing you should not do is install a program to Program files and then decide to drag all of that program's files into your business folder. That will just cause a nightmare.

Overall it is your computer and you can put most things where you like. Just make sure that it is logical enough for you to find your way around and sustainable for when you have a lot more "stuff". It shouldn't cause excessive confusion for the PC. You should be more concerned about whether you (and anyone else who needs to use the machine) will be confused.

Currently I have a working dual boot XP (on SATA1) and 2000 (on IDE2) and are using the Gigabyte VIA RAID drivers on both. 2000 is slower than XP.
Should I install the "Intel Application Accelerator"?
Is it reliable, supported and faster?

A:Solved: Should I install "Intel Application Accelerator"?

If you are using the Intel connectors for any of the drivers then yes it would be a good idea to install the latest Intel Application Accelerator. You can get the latest version from here: Duo Pro.htm

But you do realise that the IDE drive is in fact physically slower then the SATA drive. 5400 vs 7200 RPM spin and 2 vs 8 MB cache.

This is one feature of Windows XP Pro and to click Start button and see "My recent documents" next to My Pictures etc would be great.

A:Solved: How to install "My recent documents" in Windows XP

Yeah this is possible

right click the start button/ properties/ start menu tab/ customize/ then the advanced tab

see at the bottom of that page. List my most recently opened documents, put a check in that box, now it should be on the start menu

Hi, I manage a home network running 4 PCs (all XP Home with the latest MS Updates) behind a Netgear Router/Firewall. I keep everything up to date and do weekly scans on all PCs. We all have McAfee Security Centre (Virus Scan 10, Firewall, Privacy, Spamkiller), Windows Defender 1.1.1347.0, Ad-Aware SE Personal and DELL Support Monitor.
On 30 Sep, my daughter clicked on that "Is this you" link in MSN Messenger (despite all I've ever told her!). Straightaway, her McAfee VirusScan 10 popped up to advise her to do a scan. So she did, but the Windows kept coming up, so she shut down and has not logged on since. I have run several scans in Safe mode (without Internet access) and have removed things they found. The last round of scans in Safe Mode produced nothing, so I logged on in normal mode. It still wants me to install Toolbar888, but I can't stop it asking me. I've blocked it and I don't think I'm at risk, but I can't stop it asking me to install it. As a last resort, before I wipe the HD and rebuild the PC, I thought I'd follow McAfee's advice to use this website. I've downloaded HiJack This. What do I do next? (I'm using my own PC to do send this). Thanks.

Hi, I have been having trouble installing programs which use the MSIEXEC.exe I get an error message "msiexec.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close." I've been trying to install java 6 update 3 and adaware.
I have tried:

Unregister then Register
Running Microsoft Cleaning Tool. (Got the same error message while running)
Downloading and trying to reinstall. (And Again)
Something suggested in another thread with gpedit then gpupdate /force.
Somebody please, I won't be able to install programs without fixing this.

Hi Guys,

I am trying to reinstall XP Home on my friends Dell Dimension 2400 desktop.
He complained of the PC running extremely slowly. So I used the original dell operating system disc and re-installed XP Home.
I'm not joking when I say that it took 10 hours to load!!!!!!!!!
Also near the end I got the message "INF Install Failure" reason "The Handle is Invalid".
I have done a search on the problem and their are various answers but none of them conclusive.
People have mentioned clearing the VRAM and increasing the speed in task manager etc, but nothing conclusive.
I thought it might be the hard drive so I tried another one I had lying about and the same happen. 10 hours to load and the same fail message.
This problem seems to be very common with Dells??
I would appreciate any help. Thanks.
