Start up stalling when connected to cable modem

Q: Start up stalling when connected to cable modem

When I try to start my HP Pavillion a450n first I get an error message that says "backupnotify.exe application failed to initialize properly (0xc00000005)". I click OK and my desktop comes up (after a while) but then everything just freezes (including the clock) and I can't open any programs or do anything, even ctl-alt-del does nothing and I need to hard shut down. This does not happen, however, if I unplug the cable to my Lynksys router. I've run Norton Anti Virus, but it tells me nothing is wrong. I'm running Windows XP. Here's the results of the highjack this scan I did today:

Hi gurus,

Ok, first of all, I know NOTHING about networking. I just got a cable internet connection installed at my house yesterday. I bought a Motorola Surfboard SB4100 cable modem and the tech came out and installed an ethernet card and I got the connection up and running last night with very little effort.

I want to share the connection so my girlfriend and I can be online at the same time. So I went out and bought a D-Link DI-704P router/firewall and another ethernet card for her pc.

Now, here come my questions. The cable provider won't offer any support on how to set up my network. How hard is it? I haven't read the documentation with the router yet, but I'm hoping it will be easy enough for my pee brain to comprehend.

Also, the cable technician told me that I would have to purchase another dynamic IP address (for $8.00/month) to have both computers connected at the same time. Is this true? I thought that a router would dynamically assign addresses to all the pcs on the network and handle all the communications with the cable modem.

Lastly... with the firewall capability built into the router, is it useful, necessary or stupid to also include firewall software such as ZoneAlarmPro? Again, I know nothing about networking, so I hope that's not a stupid question.

Thanks for all your help!

I can't figure this one out. I have this e-machine EL1852G-52W I installed a new hard drive, and win XP (has not been activated). I installed a few programs - they work fine. BUT, after I shut down power (both ac & bat.) to the cable modem and wait a minute - then connect to the computer, I get no connect activity on the modem, and I can't access the internet. What can cause this and how to troubleshoot this? Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

I have three computers on a lan in my home. All three computers (2-win98SE and 1-winXP) see each other and transfer fine until I connect my cable modem. At that point, all machines can access the internet but, not see each other.

All machines are set to the same workgroup. I use Norton internet security and have entered the adapter ip's as trusted. I disabled Norton to check for problems there. I still had the same problem. If I disconnect the cable modem, the machines will slowly find and recognize each other again.

Any help on this would be appreciated.

My friend has cable speed w/ Roadrunner. The cable modem is a Toshiba brand that has ethernet and usb interface. Can I use each to a different computer ? One for ethernet and the other to a USB? Somehow, I dont think it's possible cuz the ISP would detect 2 MAC address.

I'm just wondering before I get there whether I should get a router and another ethernet card.

A:Is this possible w/ 2 computers connected to a cable modem?

You could just use Internet Connection sharing, you would still need a net card for the second computer, and you would have to network the 2, but it would be pretty easy to set up. And no. you cant use both interfaces on the cable modem at the same time. A router would be your best long term solution

I have done this before where I had gotten cable on the $19.99/month special for 6 months. I switched over from dsl to cable so I found a post about how to turn your westel 327 into a wireless router for your cable network. It worked like a charm back when I did it before. Well, my year is up for dsl so I went back to cable on the special again, but this time, I can not get the westel to work with the cable modem again.
The directions for doing it are here: ĽRe: Use Versalink 327W with cable modem
It was suggested to me by the cable forum that I ask here.
There are two things I am not certain about as I've lost the detailed directions I had made long ago in case I wanted to do this again. For one, is ethernet port 1 the uplink port or is ethernet port 4 the uplink port? I looked at a user guide and it says E1 but there is a networking picture over E4. So I'm not sure. I have been trying with no avail but it may be because of another issue. I am asking to be sure as I've tried everything anyways. The second question I had was should I be using a straight-thru cable or a crossover cable to connect the westel to the surfboard cable modem? I am guessing straight-thru if indeed one of the ports are designated as uplink, right? The funny thing about the uplink port is, normally it is a regular ethernet port to hook up to my computer, yet for the purposes of connecting a router or whathave you it says that that same port becomes an uplink port. So I'm not sure i... Read more

I have a Motorola SB6121 DOCSIS 3 modem from Charter feeding my own D-Link DIR-655 router. Periodically the Internet is unavailable to my PC that is hard wired to the router. When that happens, itís only gone for a minute maybe two minutes. Sometimes it will go for days with no problems. Other times it may happen two or three times an hour. I can read the modem status page from my PC when this happens and observe that the four downstream channels are bonded and receiving approximately 0 dBmV (S/N = 37 dB). Upstream is bonded and delivering 47 dBmV. So, I think we can say that the PC is communicating with the modem through the router and the modem is connected to Charterís head end.
Charter has been out numerous times and says the signal into and out of the modem meets specs. Of course they are never there when the Internet is unavailable. But if they were there they would probably find that the signal carrier meets specs, but there is no Internet. However, Charter repair has told me that this is impossible. If the modem is bonded, it means the Internet is there. Therefore, it is the router that is dropping the Internet (remember I can read the modem status page trough the router when this happens).

Any thoughts?

Hey all

So I am having this weird problem. I have Time Warner as my ISP, and previously had a Belkin router for wireless. All was well until Time Warner had a snafu in the system, and was down for about 12 hours. Ever since then, I cannot connect to the internet through the router. I have to unhook the router completely and plug directly into the cable modem or no internet for me.

I took back the Belkin and bought a Dynex, and get the same problem. It looks like it might be made by the same company as well, due to the same design in the serup options.

I called tech support, and the guy had me do all these tests, such as power cycling, manually assigning an IP address, reseting the router, using a different ethernet cable, erc.

None worked, so he finally said I cannot help you, your router is bad. Why did it work before? How can two different routers be bad?

When the router is plugged in, all the lights are on except the internet light is blinking. This is the same thing that happened with the previous router as well.

Any help would be appreciated before I take this back and try a Netgear or Linksys model.

A:Can get connected via cable modem but not wireless router

First off, let's see this when you're plugged directly into the modem.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

Type the following command:

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

Next, try this procedure for getting a wired connection to the router, we'll work on wireless after this works.

Reset the router to factory defaults by holding the reset button down for 15 seconds with power on.
Turn off everything, the modem, router, computer.
Connect the modem to the router's WAN/Internet port.
Connect the computer to one of the router's LAN/Network ports.
Turn on the modem, wait for a steady connect light.
Turn on the router, wait for two minutes.
Boot the computer.

When the computer is completely booted, you should have Internet access. If not, I want to see this again.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

Type the following command:

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

This computer i own has worked fine for a long time now, so has my isp and cable modem until recently.....

2 weeks ago the cable modem started to disconnect on a almost perfect timing (About once a hour) If i take the power cord and unplug it, let it sit, then re-plug in, its fine.....for another hour.

So ive called the isp, they replaced the good.....
Called them again, they told me it was a hardware or software issue.

So i rollback with system restore to two days before the problem...cable modem stays online like it used to.

The only thing i had deleted or added to the system at this time were

Old version of adobe acrobat
Lord of the Rings online free trial.

Since it will stay on after a rollback, i know its not the NIC card but i cant for the life of me figure out were the error is coming from.

Talking to the ISP tech guy, they can ping the modem and its alive but when i ping times out....

Any advice would be nice.
If i cannot find a solution im just going to reformat back to factory settings which at this point would be alot easier but im a stubborn fella.

Oh, i have run full system scan with CA virus/anti spyware provided by my isp i also have run Spybot....

I did find these entries

Mirc nHTMLn 2.9
FakeCD 99 3.0

Even after removal in safe mode, the problem still persist's with the modem until i rollback.

Thanks ahead of time!

I just purchased the Asus RT-AC87U to be able to take advantage 802.11ac connection speed. I have to connect this to an Actiontec combo cable modem/wireless router. this may help - to connect two routers together

Connecting two (or more) SOHO broadband routers together

Note: The "primary" router can be an actual router, a software gateway like Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing, or a server connection that has the capability to supply more than one IP address using DHCP server capability. No changes are made to the primary "router" configuration.

Configure the IP address of the secondary router(s) to be in the same subnet as the primary router, but out of the range of the DHCP server in the primary router. For instance DHCP server addresses through, I'd assign the secondary router as it's IP address, for another router, etc.

Note: Do this first, as you will have to reboot the computer to connect to the router again for the remaining changes.

Disable the DHCP server in the secondary router.

Setup the wireless section just the way you would if it was the primary router, channels, encryption, etc.

Connect from the primary router's LAN port to one of the LAN ports on the secondary router. If there is no uplink port and neither of the routers have auto-sensing ports, use a cross-over cable. Leave the WAN port unconnected!

My PC has an incredibly annoying and head-scratching problem, it won?t connect to the internet as it constantly says ?A Network Cable is Unplugged?. I gather this is a common problem and I searched on the internet for a solution, but the ones suggested haven?t worked. My PC runs on Windows XP and we have a wired home LAN network to share an internet connection

I tried changing the speed and duplex, I went to run, cmd and put ipconfig and it says ?Media Disconnected?. I tried every cable we have in the house of varying length, even a Cat6 instead of the usual Cat5 ones the other computers use and I tried a crossover adapter just to see if it was being contrary. I also tried switching ports on the router and the one that was always off was the one for the problem computer. I tried updating my driver, which is an onboard Realtek one, it wouldn?t update. The technician for Arbico which the company I bought the PC from said it was the NIC, sent me a new one and washed their hands of the problem.

The new NIC, a TP-Link on this time, had the same problem so I then took the PC to PC World where the technician connected it up and it worked there with no problems.
I assumed that a shop like PC world has a network so thinking maybe the problem could be our router, I connected the new PC straight into the modem and still got the network cable unplugged message and it still won?t connect to the internet. I doubt the problem is the modem as we?ve only had it a few... Read more

A:Network Cable Unplugged appears whether connected through router or directly to modem

The fact that the Realtek driver cannot update is a worrisome clue.

If this is a desktop, replace the network card as a test... and reinstall the drivers once more.

Modems or Network Interface Cards can fail at anytime, and new ones are not any more reliable than old ones...

Also check the socket. We have been seeing a lot of network socket failures... But were fixable by adding a new network card, and disabling the old socket.

Hi All,
I have Laptop Toshiba Satellite L775, windows 7. I used cable modem Motorola SURFboard SBG6580 and it was working fine. Then I changed my ISP to Century Link and used their DSL modem and still everything worked just fine. Now I moved to another city and used same cable modem (SBG6580) and connected my business PC thru ethernet and it is working fine. The problem is with my laptop which I tried to connect wirelessly but coudn't so I tried to connect it thru ethernet but it does not even recognizes it. Funny thing is my hard wired computer has picked up same network name thru modem and is working fine both thru ethernet and wifi (this computer I am using first time with this modem).
My laptop find available networks and when I select my network with password, some time it says connected with limited access and some time "windows was unable to connect" message. I tried most of the solutions by calling Suddenlink and Motorola but no luck. I am wordering if it has to do anything with centurylink's DSL modem being used on this laptop before and somehow blocking cable modem?
Any help?

A week ago, my computer suddenly could not connect to the internet. I was using a cable directly connected to the cable modem.

Since then, I've tried:

1) Added a WiFi router connected to the cable modem. Tried using the WiFi card built in to the computer. It connects but reports "limited access", and there is no connection to the internet, and I can't access the router itself.

2) Bought a new Ethernet card, installed the drivers that came with it. I've tried it connected through the WiFi router's hard ports and directly to the modem. Hard resets (power cycling off 2 minutes) on the modem each time and still no connection.

3) In device manager, both Ethernet cards show as "working normally" with no errors. So does the WiFi card.

4) ipconfig shows only "tunneling" devices with media disconnected.

5) I've uninstalled and re-installed the drivers for the on-baord Ethernet, the WiFi card, and the new Ethernet card.

After reading some other posts, I captured the output from ipconfig and several netsh commands. I've attached them to this post. The files starting with netsh are basically the command entered with underscores replacing the spaces from the commands used to generate them.

I also borrowed another computer. It connects both directly through the cable modem, and using the Ethernet ports on the router. It doesn't have WiFi, so I couldn't test that method of access. It can also connect to and c... Read more

Recently I had to test my cable modem by directly plugging the output cable of the modem to a computer. The problem is that I have 3 computers: One desktop and two laptops. All three computers are running Windows 7, 64 bit and service pack 1. The three computer models are: (1) Dell Vostro, (2) Levovo Ideacentre and (3) Sony Vaio. All computers are less than a year old. When I cpnnect the cable modem RJ45 cable to the Vostro the browser works great. However, when I connect the same cable into either the Ideacentre or the Vaio the browser does not see the signal. Therefore a signal is coming out of the modem (as demonstrated by the Vostro) but I can't figure out why the other two computers don't see the signal? I checked the computer configurations in the command mode but that did not help much. Any ideas?

I have a cable modem attached to a network (router, cascaded to other routers - different vendors routers but it works / to attach 10 computers). The PCs use a lot of data/bandwith part of the day and works well, generally, but the cable modem sometimes has outages and its important we get network working again. We have no IT support. So thank you in advance for any direction you can provide.

I also have a DSL line/router that is not attached to anything (except it provides wireless).

Question: Can I just swing the cable from the cable modem over to the DSL router and expect internet to work?

I tried it one day and it worked, but we had very limited usage.

I tried it another time when the cable modem/internet failed - and it didn't seem to work. The usage was much higher so I don't know if the amount of data or the required "handshake" would take longer. or what...can you advise. This is just vanilla internet connection. No VPN or such. The applications can be shut down and reopened. But we would rather not have to reboot the PCs.

Second question would be: if I have both DSL and Cable Modem sitting next to each other - can I attach both so they can both be used and provide back up.

So I my laptop is upstairs and my At&t Uverse cable modem is downstairs and I believe there is some interference in the ceiling because although the signal always reads as "excellent" often times it seems to run a bit slower upstairs than when i bring it one floor down. I was wondering if connecting the laptop to the modem directly would be more helpful. (I already have a hidden wiring route that I made to run a hdmi cable from my tv downstairs to the laptop upstairs) I bought a 50ft cable cord and was wondering if all i need to do is plug it in or if i have to somehow program the connection so it knows to run through the cable instead of the wireless signal. I don't have a router either...not sure if id need one as they didn't provide one. Detailed help is much appreciated!

A:How do I set up a connection to a cable modem with a cable cord?

Just plug it in at both ends. It should work fine.

Once plugged in, it will take a few seconds to detect the new wired network and get an IP Address. After that you should be all set.

Edit: You can disable the Wireless if you want. There is either a switch on the laptop or a Fn+Fkey combination to do it.

is true internet cable modem is problematic ?

the conection drops too much?

A:cable modem internet cable?

Cable modems aren't problematic at all really. In most cases it's better than using DSL. However what is most annoying with cable is the fact you have to share bandwidth with other people in the neighborhood that have the same cable provider as yourself. I've rarely seen cable modems drop connections often . Mine has done it once or twice but nothing to worry about.

Hi, I have a strange question that im hoping can work (for a fortnight at the most lol)

I have just joined Virgin Media on 20meg connection. They sent me out an Ambit E08C013.00 modem but forgot to send out the router. Then the engineer installs the wallbracket lobsided! But anyway, im getting away from my question.

I have to wait up to 2 weeks for my router and in the meantime, my computer is upstairs and my connection is downstairs! I dont want to buy a router that will last me 2 weeks, so I decided to dig out my old BT Voyager 2091 router. I connected it to my Netgear FS208 v2 ethernet network switch and now I am trying to get it to broadcast my BB signal from my Ambit modem (which is also connected to my Netgear switch)

I can now connect to my wireless router, but it will not broadcast my broadband.

Is there a way to fix this? Or do I have to wait till my new router arrives?

My uncle has an HP all in one unit Omni running Home Edition SP1 64 bit that connects using a cable modem. The other day it stopped connecting and Ipconfig displayed an invalid IP address - 169 something.

I brought his unit home and connected it to my DSL modem. Immediate connection. IP address 192 something. I took it back to his house and it didn't connect again. He had the cable guys there for 3.5 hours Tuesday. They showed him that their laptop connected using his modem. I wasn't there to see it.

However he has an ancient XP laptop that connects just fine using his modem.

I now have his unit here at my house, and, once again, it's working perfectly.

The ONLY fly in the ointment is that when I took it back to his house it stayed on the Starting Windows screen. For about 5 minutes. We never got the merging balls. I held down the power button till it turned off, got the Repair your computer or Start Windows normally on the restart, selected start normally and this time got the merging balls and the desktop. I also got the yellow triangle on the network icon in the notification area.telling me taht I had no internet access. When I brought it back to my house and my DSL modem it again froze on the Starting Windows screen. I let it sit there for 20 minutes before I powered off. On the restart I again chose to start normally, but this time when the desktop displayed there was no yellow triangle, and I had internet access. I have no idea if this figures into the cable /... Read more

A:Connects with DSL Modem - Not with Cable Modem

It sounds like the Network Adapter in the HP is defective. The stall before the balls coalescing indicates a problem with hardware.

If all computers except the HP connect to the modem on the same cable (a 192 address indicates Ethernet connection) then you can assume the modem is OK and remove it from the equation.

If other computers connect to the modem using different cables then you might suspect the cable.

You could try uninstalling (removing from Device Manager) and reinstalling the Network Adapter. It should reinstall automatically on the next startup.

It might also be interesting to see what happens if you disable the device, to see if the startup stall disappears. You could disable it in Device Manager, but if you can disable it in the BIOS that would be an even better test.

okay. vista homepremium SP2 here.
ever since I got this computer(around four years ago), I would rarely have instances where I'd power it on, and it would POST, and move on to the stage of boot where the machine looks to see if there's a bootable CD, and would then trip up and get out the nvidia boot manager to attempt a network boot. this has been disconcerting, but since powering off before or after it realized there was nothing on the network to boot from and then powering on again would result in the machine booting normally, I had little option but to assume that, given the rarity at the times (like... maybe once every six months at most) that it was simply a quirk of this machine, which is an emachines refurb (I didn't select it myself, or I wouldn't have gone emachines. *sigh*).
within the last month, this bootup stalling has begun happening more frequently. and sometimes it doesn't get out the nvidia boot manager even. the "turn it off and back on" thing was still resolving it in a single go... getting worried...
and today it took multiple tries to get the machine booted. now. the "not getting the boot manager" thing may simply be impatience. but having multiple stalls in a row is still seriously "oh crap" material. I got the boot manager twice before the ... Read more

Is this means I have a bad IDE cable or bad IDE connector on the mobo?

or in another word, does the IDE cable on the mobo need to connect to some device?

Thanks in advance!

A:Does IDE cable need to be connected?

make sure the jumper on your hdd is set to master (shouldn't matter but do it anyway)
1. put the ide cable into the primary connector, then plug it into your hdd, does it boot?
2. If not, take it out of the primary and plug it into the secondary ide connector, does it boot?
3. If not, change the ide cable and try steps 1 and 2 again.
(again, doesn't matter which ide connector you use to connect the hdd to)
4. If it still does not work, you either have faulty ide connectors on your motherboard or your hdd has a corrupted os on it.

I've got Linux mint on it at the moment and the OS was going in to panic mode and shutting down completely and rebooting the computer.

Best part was the entire thing was working fine yesterday and I had no trouble with it.

Any thoughts anyone what could be the problem. The system is a Dell Optiplex 2012 Core 2 Duo.

PC 2

With these settings i can file share perfectly, evrythin elkse works fine, but PC 2 cannot get internet. Within PC 2's Network Connection, it shows me the broadband connection i use on PC 1 as an internet gateway, and says it is connected, so why does it not give me my internet?

i tried makin PC 2 'Obtain IP address automatically', and sometimes everythin works fine with internet and file sharing, but sometimes it assigns itself an IP address which makes it not part of the network. Any Ideas? Thanks.

Hi, i am having a problem in my office with the internet connection.
We have a wireless router with 3 laptops running wireless off it and a PC connected via cable.
We also have a printer linked in via cable through the router.
The laptops work fine and we can print OK, however the PC keeps flashing the "network cable unpluged" and "newtwork connected" message constantly on/off. The PC can get on to the net, but sometimes gets kicked off when the unpluged message appears.

Can anyone advise on what might be causing this??
i have tried new cables but to no effect.

I used to get the same message but the net still worked. Right click it and open network connections and disable the one that you dont use.

Hi everyone, I was wondering if anyone can help me with this problem.

I have been connected to a wireless 4 computer network for a month with no problems. I am connected to it via a Solwise Homeplug again with no previous problems. Yesterday an error message came up saying there was an IP address conflict. Since then I have not been ableto connect to the internet.

I tried to find out what the IP address was on my computer to change it but when I look at ipconfig instead of displaying it it says 'media disconnected'

Also when I look into my internet connection it displays as network cable not connected and there is no light in the port where the cable connects to the computer (there is usually).

If anyone has any ideas, advice please let me know. If you need anymore info ill be happy to give it.

Alright back again with another computer issue.

This time it's with a new bought Gigabyte GA-990FTXA-UD3. I've got everything working apart from this. It's my internet connection. Using the integrated network card obviously and the computer does not even respond to it when im connecting it.

Does anybody know what could be the problem.
And before you ask, Yes i do have reinstalled the OS as well as plugged directly into the modem but does still not work. I've also tried a different internet cable but didn't help either
You can find my spec's down below.

A:No ethernet cable connected

Have you checked the properties of the card? If the drivers for the card are installed, (normally comes with motherboard) and the card does not show up then your motherboard could be defective. OR, if it does show up and not working, it could be that the os turned off the network card. On the properties of the card, there is a power management tab that if not unchecked, windows could turn the card off.

So give that a shot.

I got a real toe-stumper on my hands . . Built a new GA-K8nf-9 motherboard with nVidia nFOrce4 chipset . . AMD Athlon 64 . . nVidia 10/100/1000 Network Adaptor.

I assembled on bench and installed XP Pro and all programs with no problem . . after a few hours, moved the tower into production and I get the "Network Cable disconnected" message, followed immediately by "Connected at 100 mps" message . . happens every minute or so . .

Same network as the workbench, but much closer to the switch . . maybe three feet . .

I changed out cables with no effect . . The only way I can stop the repeated disconnected/connected balloon messages is to set the Speed/Duplex setting to 10 half duplex . . any other settings causes the repeated disconnectrd/connected bubble.

Not real sure this is handicaping the networking, but this machine was intended to be the "Hooking Bull" of the network . . kinda embarassing to have it ratting me out that it is only connected at 10 Mps. .

Any idea what else I could try to get it up to full speed?

If its a new install,
Generally when you install something USB you need to put the drivers in before plugging it in or else it will try to install the drivers that windows want.

Lots of issues .. started out with a bsod or a gray screen (monitor blinking) every single boot up into windows on the first bootup of the day.
That thread is here. Then recently after a few failed windows updates I wasn't even able to boot at all.
I reinstalled windows three times now and have had issues. I've had issues with completing windows installation without going to safe mode and disabling all unknown devices/exclamation marks prior to completing. If I don't do what this link says I am unable to complete windows 7 installation.. either stuck on completing or bsod. Regardless of these installations I still get errors.
All the minidumps from my past versions of windows have been moved to the minidump folder of my current image and the synapse BSOD tool should have analyzed those as well.

Recently I have concluded that whenever my network cable is connected I crash. If i have my lan cable in when I'm booting up.. it crashes shortly after booting otherwise if I have it disconnected I boot up and don't run into issues until I try to reconnect it. This is the only BSOD/issue I get with this clean windows 7 installation and it's fully updated in terms of drivers

I have ran MEMTest to 5-8 passes for all the RAM sticks. I figured since I'm crashing this consistently and this obviously 1 pass should do the job. At this point I want to say it's my network card on my motherboard but I wanted a second opinion before I went ahead and bought another one.

I have a Win2000 machine (connected to internet via ADSL modem) and a new XP machine.

I have connected them using a crossover cable (or rather a normal cable with a crossover adapter as my local computer shop had run out of crossover cables).

On the system tray of both machines, the icon for "Network cable not plugged in" has disappeared. Progress ! They both realise they are connected.

I ran the "Network Connection Wizard" on XP - fine. It also prompted me to create a setup disk for other computer on the network, which I did. However the setup program wouldn't run on the Win2000 machine.

Now, how do I get them to see each other ?

1) Cable modem directly wired to Ethernet card on PC. Ė This works ok for a few minute but was consistently dropping out. I used ipconfig /release Ė ipconfig /renew for a while. That seemed to work for a bit. Today I got:

Hello, this looks like a great forum, I'm hoping someone can give me some advice.

I have a Gateway Profile 3 that we used for several years and recently gave to my mother-in-law as her first computer.

It worked ok for her for awhile, but suddenly stopped working. When it's turned on, you can hear the fan start up and the HD light comes on briefly. I think it starts to spin, but it's hard to hear over the fan. The main power light never comes on, and the computer will just freeze at a blank screen, no POST, no beeps, nothing. The HD light will go off and that's it.

I opened it up and disconnected the HD and I/O connectors for the keyboard/mouse and it POSTed with an error.

Reconnected the HD and it POSTed with the same error.

Reconnected the I/O cable and it didn't POST, it was blank like I described above.

I bought a new cable, and tried that, but it still doesn't work. I'm afraid that it might be something wrong with the connections at either end, but I don't know how to check that or if there's really anyway to fix it if that's the problem.

Thanks for any suggestions you might have!

I've been endeavoring to hook up a surround sound system to my desktop for quite some time, and because of how the standard analog cable array works, I can't get 5.1 sound without the S/PDIF cable hookup. I just went to the store and bought a 6' cord, unplugged all the other audio cords, put in the S/PDIF cable, and found that the computer did not recognize that there was any audio devices connected. The output jack is showing a red light, which I understand to mean that all is well, and I tried checking the drivers to no avail.
I filled out my system specs to the best of my ability, but I also found this link, which is the exact model of computer I have, and the only modification was replacing a slightly faulty power source

Exactly what do you have for a speaker system? What input is required for the speaker system?

If you connect an S/PDIF cable, you may have to manually set it as the default playback device (??) Windows will only allow one default audio playback device.

Finally, not all S/PDIF's are 5.1. Many are only 2 channel stereo.

Hello, everyone.

I have a problem with my new laptop with windows 7 ultimate on it. I tried to connect it to another PC on my workgroup using an existing ethernet switch.
The cable is connected normally. I've set the IPv6 address and disabled the IPv6. There's nothing wrong with the ipconfig result as well. But it says no network access on the status and I can get any connection (Received packets: 0)

Some notes:
- We don't have any domain, we just use workgroup.
- There's no DHCP servers on our network, so I have to set the IP manually.

using a lan card instead of a usb interface for a modem is unnessesary, performance will be just the same. still, you can try a different network card or a new cable. update your system with the latest device drivers for said card. refer to your modem/network card respective manuals.

I want to watch the lord of the rings extended trilogy which I recently got on my laptop. I want to watch it on my TV of course so I've connected my TV and my laptop via the RGB cable, and for the sound I used the 3,5 mm male jack on both sides which goes from pc headphones output to tvs sound input.

Now what happens is that it seems that the audio is not in time with the video, so I can hear the conversation before it actually happens. However, on the laptop everything runs fine, but on the tv the video is late. How to fix this? My laptop doesn't have a HDMI output unfortunately. And I can't burn it to DVD because the movie is in .mp4 format. I can't even watch it on usb because the player I have does not support mp4 movies. And all those converters are terribly slow and reduce the video quality + none of them is really free.

Thanks in advance.

Well, our Cable provider gave us $30 to buy a router. Even though I didn't need one, I bought one for the protection and security.

Now I don't have an internet connection.

I purchased a D-Ling DI-604 Broadband Router, and placed it into the place where my five-port switch used to be. I followed the step-by-step instructions, and when I finished with those I tried to connect to the internet. But no, I could not. I though, "Oh, it must have been something wrong with the router, I will connect one computer directly to the modem and go online to see if I can get any help." But no, that didn't work either.

As of now, I have one computer connected directly to the cable modem (no switch and no routers in between). I've rebooted everything countless times. I've checked to make sure my computers settings are the way they were when the internet connection worked, but to no avail.

I just can't figure it out. The computers are exactly the same as before the router was put into place, and the modem should have reset itself when I unplugged it. Yet, I still have no internet connection.

And on top of all that, my XP machine won't even recognize the router when it's in there. And now I believe none of the computers can see eachother over a network.

Does anyone know what I could do to possibly fix this?

Ugh, for the life of me I can't remember where to change the settings so the default connection comes through the NIC. The cable man came over, installed the cable line and hooked up the modem, but he had no clue of what to do on the computer. Now he's gone and he's getting someone else to come by and look at it.

I have a switch, and three computers. I plan on hooking the modem to the switch and then the switch to the computers (getting a router in a day or so). I have network already set up, but Dial Up is set for the default connection on all the computers (98, ME, XP).

Every option I try in the "Setup a new connection or network" part of Control Panel seems to be the wrong one. Can someone tell me what to do?

A:How do I set up a cable modem?

Hi gregyurkon, Not to be flip but wouldn't your ISP have step by step instructions for you to follow? Maybe I'm not understanding your question.

My computer is in my bedroom and my PS3 is in my living room, approx 20 feet between the two. If I bought 20 feet (approx) of Ethernet Cable, removed the blue ethernet cable from the back of my modem, replaced it with one end of the new ethernet cable and connected the other end of the new ethernet cable to the back of my PS3....would I now be ready for online gaming ? In other words, an ethernet cable from the back of the modem to the back of the PS3. Leaving out my computer completely. Am I on the right lines ?

I bought a D-link Ethernet card which works great, it was best buy's geek squad so they sucker me in with thier hellos and "feel sorry for me Im a virgin nerd" vibe. They got me to buy a $27.99 Cat 6 Geek Squad Ethernet Cable, but only after they agree upon a discount, so I ended up paying only $14 +tax for it! Sweet! But do i really need it with my "up to" 1.5 megs of DSL internet?

The nerd said its thicker and has a better signal then the cat 5's.

I know ive posted on this topic before..but im still confused. I use optimum online cable modem service....and basically have a line running into my "comptuer room"..being split with a spliter and running into my cable modem and into a tv in the other room. The line into this room is one that was split outside (apparently cable company likes to split line). I checked all the splitters and they are high quality. However, i experience random drops in my bandwith....going from 2500kps to 800kps at times. When this happens, webpages dont load and i get signed off AIM. I have tried hooking the modem up directly to the line w/o the splitter and still experience the same problem..which leads me to ask, what do i check next? I have a cat 5 wire running from the modem to the computer...but dont know whats do i know if its the modem, the wires, the onboard LAN???? im so confused so any help would be appreciated

P.s. I called optimum and all they said was "we're picking up a good signal from your modem...just check all connections"

please help.....I have a cable internet connection. i bought a hp laptop that i want to add to be used sometimes. the cable people told me to buy a router and i did but can't get it to work with the laptop.. when i put it all together like they say my main pc won't even connect. they i tried the software with the router and it keeps telling me that i have to setup dsl bescause i have pppoe??????? What is the easiest way to do this? any suggestions?

A:cable modem help

PPPoE is point to point protocol over ethernet and is normally used by DSL providers, you may have a DSL/Cable router.
For cable, you should not have any special setup for cable.
The router should get the IP and your computers should get IP's from the router.
Do you have both PC's set to Obtain an IP address Automatically?
Have you called the Router tech support?

what happens if you go to start/run and type

win98 winipcfg, release all, renew all

2k ipconfig /release ipconfig /renew
It sounds like it's your isp resetting the servers at night or something along that line so that you are losing your lease

I use roadrunner cable to connect to the web.
I installed a router to split the connection between my several pcs. This was all done months ago. For the past 3 weeks I have problems getting connected to the web. I can connect in the morning but as the day goes on i can not connect night are impossible. The cable people said they don't see a problem. Can it be that there are to many users ,not on my router, but with the cable company? It seems to me that the times when more people are on is when I can't get a signal.

A:Cable Modem keeps going down

This might take some extra effort, but the first thing I would do is when I had trouble, I would connect the modem directly to one of the PCs to see if the trouble persisted. If it does, usually you can call Customer Service and they'll talk to you. If you have a router, they don't like to do anything.
