Q: HijackThis Log - Computer freezing constantly

My laptop has been freezing a lot lately. All programs freeze up, I get "Computer Not Responding" when I ctrl,alt,delete. Once I close the extra programs I don't need to run, I will try to open Internet Explorer or Yahoo Messenger but nothing happens. When I attempt to restart the computer, it will shutdown to the "Sony Vaio" screen saver and then sit there until I manually turn off the power switch. Also, usually after about an hour or so, I'll get the so called "Blue screen of death" and am forced to restart my computer.

I'm not really sure what the problem is and obviously it's stemming further than this, but here's a HijackThis log for good measure:

OK, well, to start with, thank you to everyone who tries to help me out with my issue, means a lot!

OK, so the issue is, my computer (recently) has decided to be a prick and at random times after start up (could be before i log in, could be in 4-5 hours) it will freeze up, nothing on the screen will load, all sounds will stop, and mouse wont respond, the only way to un-freeze it is to manually reboot the computer, it happened after i put a new graphics card in it, (nVIDIA GeForce 5500) i successfully installed the drivers and the card, and had fun with my semi-improved graphics, then came the freezing, i tried everything, even removing the card, removing everything about nVIDIA that was added, and system restoring to a factory reset. still freezing, any help once again is GREATLY appreciated, right now the card is OUT of the computer.

Specs:
Compaq Prescario SR1426NX
Intel 4 Pros.
3 GB RAM

Hello,

I am having a lot of dfficulty with my computer. Since a few weeks now, the computer will randomly begin to freeze. Sometimes right away after start, or when left inactive, other times it will work for hours then suddenly freeze up. I am not sure what the problem is. Last month I had trouble with my Ipod and had to reformat it, which led me to reinstall Itunes. Ever since then the computer has been crashing and I will have to restart everything.

For the past few weeks, my computer has just been constantly freezing every few seconds. I've run AVG, Spybot, and even downloaded and ran Norton...none found anything wrong with the computer. I also tried re-starting in Safe Mode and then re-starting again in regular mode as a friend suggested. Did nothing.

My laptop is a little over 1 year old. It's a Lenovo running Windows 7 Home Premium, Service Pack 1. Has an intel Core i5 processor, and is used only for internet browsing and video streaming.

I have a Dell Inspirion Laptop that has begun freezing up. I spoke with someone that builds computers and he told me to run msconfig, which I did. I wasn't sure what to do once I got to that screen so I didn't change anything. Now, I can't get online and not much of anything will open.
Should I just re-install XP or use this laptop for a boat anchor?

HELPPPP! For the past three days I have been experiencing random freezes constantly!!! I have a Sony Viao Notebook with Windows XP. I have performed every check I can think of, but I'm not all that computer literate. I will be typing, sometimes in outlook, sometimes in WP, and the cursor freezes in space and my only option is to turn off the system. Even control, alt, delete to stop the process will not work. What's going on? I need help. I have too many projects to suffer this annoying bugaboo!

My computer's problem is that all the programs and everything that's running suddenly freezes (programs, mouse, music, etc.) from time to time. Especially when I'm watching videos, usually on fullscreen, or on particular websites such as Twitter or those that take a while to load, are sluggish when scrolling through or have a lot of content. After it freezes, I would have no choice but to restart the computer. I tried formatting my computer, and installing the system on a new hard drive with plenty of space. I also cleaned out the dust from the CPU to make sure it's not over-heating, used a few programs and cleaned out the registry, deleted unused files and programs but nothing seems to work, the computer still freezes pretty often. After I formatted the computer, it started freezing less often and the blue screen where Disk Checking occurs stopped appearing whenever I had to restart my computer. Which means it helped a little bit to format the computer, but did not solve my problem. Hope you can help!

For a few weeks, my computer has been freezing a lot. I reinstalled drivers updated windows and software, tried everything, but is won't stop. No information related to the freezing is left in the event viewer, so I think it is a hardware problem.. My computer is less than 2 years old so a worn out hard drive is pretty much out of the question. The freezing usually, but not always occurs when the computer is working hard (serveral apps open at once, video editing, etc) and seems to occur more often when the computer has been on for a long time. The freezes usually happen every few minutes and it is driving me CRAZY! I want to pick up my computer and throw it at a brick wall because I can't get anything done! HELP! PLEASE! What is going on?! I think it could be a processor problem but I'm not good with hardware so I need help urgently! Thanks!

I know that various things cause your computer to freeze and thought that maybe that the fact that I haven't done a defrag in a while could be the problem.  I defragged last night and unfortunately, that didn't resolve my problem.
 
I've did a full scan with Dr. Web Cureit(took around 12 hours) back in late August and a few things were found which I deleted.  Then about a week or so ago I did a full scan with Malwarebytes and it found a few things and I thought that was that. I don't know what else to do.
 
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I totally forgot the process of how things are done when asking for help if you think your computed is infected. I've since download DDS and used it.

I have a Dell Optiplex SX280 and it just freezes constantly, the power light turns orange/yellow and i cant restart it with Ctrl+Alt+Del so i shut it down manually. Hello. I am having a very difficult time using my laptop. Dell Inspiron 6400.
About 1 mos ago my computer started to freeze up whenever I opened Mozilla, or up to the tool bar to change any options. The freezing would last about 30 seconds, after which things ran normal

I deleted Mozilla and started to use explorer, the problem surfaced there as well. I finally did a "dell restore" that solved the problem for a few days, but then the problems started again.

I have run memory check and the full dell diagnostics and everything comes up okay.

Now every time I open explorer up, my computer freezes for aprox 30 seconds. Also when the computer first loads up, it also freezes for aprox 30 seconds.

I did spybot, adaware, ccleaner and the trendmicro virus scan.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

My dad has a computer with Windows XP on it which he runs his business off of and it is constantly freezing on him, let me get into more detail..

You will still be able to move the mouse around and you can maximize programs but once you do that you cant do anything more with them, and everything just eventually stops responding. The problem started out where the computer would freeze after being inactive for about 10 minutes, as long as he was at the computer doing something it would work fine but if he left it alone it would freeze.

Well we tried some things first to try and fix it, ran AVG but of course the computer froze during the scan. I tried to do a simple system restore, problem is the computer freezes during and it does not have time to finish it. So i went on to run a checkdisk (chkdsk /r) and had it run on startup, problem is the computer froze during the checkdisk aswell. After another day it starts freezing even when he is using it, first after about 10 minutes and now its down to 5 minutes tops. So since he has his older HDD in the computer still that he uses as extra disc space now I went ahead and booted off of that, its really bogged down like it was before he got his new computer but atleast it works. That one has a recovery console built into it so i booted off of that and ran chkdsk /r on his C drive (which ofcourse is the one we are trying to get fixed). Some problems found and repaired, great! Booted off of the drive it still freezes.

I have a Toshiba Satellite L305-S5919 with Windows Vista. It has been freezing about every 30 minutes-1 hour. It started last night after i got a blue screen saying it was shutting down to prevent any damage. This occured while i was playing World of Warcraft and listening to Itunes. Im currently in safe mode with networking. It's not freezing while in safe mode. I also use AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

It may be shutting down due to overheating. Most laptops are not designed to be gaming machines. You can try using compressed air to blow dust out of the vents and see if that helps.

Hey, I found way too many processes in task manager.. and the amount seems to keep increasing, so far its 41.. what should it be? on average ..
Not too long ago there was some major virus's found on the computer but it was eventually fixed, all though im still not convinced, as it still shows signs of virus', also the screen randomly goes black as if its failing to refresh, ive updated the graphics card drivers so hopefully thats fixed that problem. Id just like somebody to check the log file just so i can be sure that theres nothing wrong :)

Sorry for the delay in getting to you, the forum has been really busy lately and all our helpers are volunteers

There is no set average for running processes as these will depend on the PC and the applications installed. They will constantly increase/decrease while the computer is running, as programs (including background processes) are opened/closed. e.g. I have 42 processes running with an open browser and notepad opened. The rest are system processes, anti-virus program, firewall, anti-spyware and a few programs I chose to run at startup. Some users will tweak the startups to get down to about 25 processes but that's usually not needed unless your computer is really slow to boot up or slow at opening programs or responding to user input.

I don't see any malware in your log but I will take a further look to make sure, however..........

I notice that you have more than one anti-virus programs on your machine (AVG & Symantec). That's not a good idea!!

This messes up the machine pretty badly. Alike firewalls, anti-virus programs have conflicts co-existing with each other & may produce undesirable results. Please uninstall ALL leaving only one of them.

ALL the antivirus programs must be removed via add/remove program.

This issue just started yesterday morning. I woke up yesterday morning to find the computers monitor (which went into hibernation) and the CPU still running (apparently soeone other than myself was on the computer and left it on overnight). I should also mention that the internet was still running as well (internet provided by my cable company)

Because the computer was unresponsive, I had to manually shut it down and turn it back own. It booted up like it normally should, but then 15 minutes after starting it up (and while I was on the internet), it froze. The mouse would not respond, ctrl-alt-delete wouldnt work either, so again I had to manually shut it down.

However, when I tryed to start the computer again, my monitor would display a message such as "No Input Signal" and 5 seconds later would go to sleep. So I was forced to manually shut it down again. I would get this same error message 5 or 6 times before the hp splash screen would come up and load like it normally should. However, the computer would only last between 5-15 minutes before freezing up again.

Once I manually shut it down for the 10th time and turned it back on again, I got an error message about some DLL's were corrupted or missing which prevented Windows XP from loading normally. So I did a PC recovery, and got XP to run again, but the computer is still freezing.

It could easily be malware, assuming that your recovery of xp was a repair and not a clean installI've ran a Spyware program (Advanced Spyware Remover I got from majorgeeks) and had 7 infections removed.Would you elaborate on this?

Windows updated late last night/early this morning as I turned it off. I'll also say that Zonealarm has updated.

Today, my computer is constantly freezing. All I can do is manually power it off. It is freezing about 5-10 minutes into startup.

Ok, First my system stats...
Compaq Presario 722US Notebook
1.1Ghz
256 Mb Ram(upgraded to 384 bc of freezing, no luck)
Xp Home Sp1 Fully updated

Ok, no matter what im doing my laptop freezes constantly.
I contacted compaq, download softpaqs and flashed BIOS.
No luck, so i formatted and restored. Still freezes. No new software or hardware installed, doesn't seem to be overheating, fans are working. No idea whats going on. Can someone help me?

HELP....

It has just started a few hours ago and is constantly doing it? every ten seconds it freezes and I loose control of everything. it last only a second or two and then starts all over again. Prior to this I lost ability to start Red Alert telling me "....administrator privileges...." and when I do it just doesn't start.

P.S. - heaps of administrative event errors and warning....but I don't understand any of it.

My computer has been very slow of late. It seems to hang up and/or freeze (for various amounts of time) whenever I pull up any application (internet, programs, folders, anything).

The computer is about 3 years old.

Any ideas why it's doing this?

ok so, i have no idea on how this happened. one day, i was playing a computer game (warcraft III if you must know, i'm sort of a dork in this way XD) and decided to minimize the game in order to open up windows media player to listen to some music. well, the minimizing took forever and eventually it froze. frustrated i turned the computer off. now, everytime i turn on my computer it will be stuck at the windows xp loading screen for around three minutes before going to the login screen. if i don't log in immediatly, it freezes. when i do log in a window will pop up saying i have recovered from a serious error. then, when i try to open ANY application, program, file etc., it freezes. the only way i am able to get online is in safe mode with networking, which is limited with no sound. i know this is not a virus because i have the program Deep Freeze 5 on my computer which is supposed to keep the computer at stock settings everytime i start up. i have tried using the system restore that XP provides but that has not worked. i do not want to have to re-install windows because the microsoft office i have is out of downloads and i do not have another. i currently have a Dell Inspiron 6000 and i belive i have windows XP 2001. please give me any advice possible, i really can't afford to get a new computer. I will get any other info requiered to help solve this problem.

it started a few months ago and at the time i just kind of ignored it cause i tend to procrastinate pretty much everything. but in the past few weeks i've actually been trying to fix this, and at first i thought it was just a trojan or some other type of malware. so as usual, i updated and ran spybot, but it came out clean and it still continued to freeze on me. i was adamant it had to be a trojan, so i downloaded AVG anti-virus which found and cleaned 6 trojans which i knew i had and i figured, problem solved. but it wasn't, it continued to freeze on me, no matter what i was doing. in fact the only time it really doesn't freeze on me is when i'm idle on my desktop not doing anything. so i googled frozen comps and have summarized that its either a temperature problem, a power problem, a memory problem, or a hard drive problem. so i opened my cpu and cleaned out the very little dust on the fans and made sure they were running properly, which they were, and left the bay door open just in case. yet it still froze. i made sure the power cord was firmly in it's socket and in the outlet and yet it still froze which led me to believe its an internal problem. so i cleaned up my registry and defragged my drives and yet it still froze. in fact it would freeze half way through my defrags. but the strange thing about my freezes i noticed, compared to other people's that i've read, is that when mine freezes, any music or sound thats playing continues to ... For the past few weeks my computer has been acting up; a little slow and occasionally would freeze up. A couple of days ago, it started to freeze up constantly. It's a pretty new computer (about a year old.) It's a Dell Vostro w/ Windows XP Pro, Serv Pk 3, version 5.1.2600. When it freezes, Ctrl Alt Del does nothing. A few times when I'm trying to get it to unfreeze, it starts making a loud, uninterrupted buzzing noise, something I've never had happen before.

I have no idea where to start to figure out what's causing this. I don't know if any of it's relevant, but here's some more info on the computer and what I've checked:

Memory

Total Physical Memory 3072 MB
Avail " " 2.34 GB
Total Virtual Memory 2 GB
Avail " " 1.96 GB
Page file space 4.84 GB

I also checked the following and it says OK, anywhere that it says STATUS; HARDWARE RESOURCES, (DMA, I/O, IRQ's, Memory,) COMPONENTS, and SOFTWARE.
I've cleared cookies and temp internet files and defragged it. I checked Windows and my security programs and downloaded any updates.

The O/S is Win XP It does not have MS Office installed, I use Open Office instead. I use mostly Firefox as my web browser, but I also have IE and Chrome installed (I'm pretty sure
they're the latest versions.) I have the following security programs installed:

I have just about had it with my computer, honestly. Just recently, in the past month or so, my computer has started putting my wifi into limited. For no reason. Yes, I have tried all the fixes on the main post. Yes, I've turned off the 'allow disabling' of it. It just is a mess.  Not only will it go to limited, but it will completely hard lock my computer (but only sometimes) I didn't really connect the two until recently, because I realized it always happened once the limited showed up on my wifi. I have no idea what's causing it. I've made sure it's no viruses, and I still have no clue. I really want to fix this.  Thank you.

My computer has been freezing frequently with a weird clicking sound on the speakers. Its been messed up for a while now. Before I couldn't even start it in normal mode and had to use safe mode just to use it. I managed to fix it by using system restore, but the freezing and clicking haven't stopped. I would just start it like normal and do the usual stuff on the computer, and after ten minutes or less it would freeze. If you need any info, please ask. I really need help!! I've had many problems with this computer, twice I had to have it taken in to be reformated. I'd rather not do that again so please, if you have any ideas that could help me, please post!

Hello,

I've recently been having issues where my computer will stop responding at random times. I haven't yet noticed a pattern, but the most recent issue happened when I opened Facebook. If I'm playing music when the freeze happens, it starts sounding creepy and machine-like, with high-pitched noises and other strange sounds. Other windows stop responding and I can't use my computer for about 30 seconds. I'm not sure if this is Malware related or not. I haven't been to any malicious websites or downloaded anything, but I don't know what else the problem could be.

Also, I'm running Windows 7 on an HP dm4x series laptop. I believe drivers are up to date and updates are installed to Windows.

hi, can any pls one help me. the other day my avira anti virus alerted me of multiple attack of virus. which i denied access and moved to quaranteen. i then perform a full scan of ewido, spybot, superantispyware and avira just to make sure. although now my computer is having problem when internet explorer loads up, hang/freezes everytime and when i click my mouse i hear a beep sound and computer freezes. i tried to perform a system restore but it doesnt respond. pls help

Hi, my computer freezes when I'm using it throughout the day. Sometimes it will freeze up to five times in a three hour span. It usually occurs when I am tampering with media or opening multiple browsers. When the computer is idle, it does not freeze. Here is my log. (attached) Thank you for any help or feedback. I tried starting my PC in Safe Mode and it gives me the options to select Safe Mode or Safe Mode Network, etc.... problem is, when I start in Safe Mode a bunch of Windows filenames appear and it never starts up in Safe Mode. ....? Basically what the title suggests. My computer will work fine for varying amounts of time when streaming video (watching movies, skyping, etc) but eventually the computer starts running sluggish until it virtually freezes. This problem doesn't seem to be nearly as bad when I'm streaming movies or tv shows, but when it comes to skyping this problem has been a nightmare. I'm at the point where I can't skype someone for more than 10 minutes before my computer freezes. Has anyone else had this problem? Any help would be awesome.

Recently I was working on SPSS (a stats database) modifying one file over several weeks and saving changes several times per day. One morning I tried to bring my computer out of hibernation mode, as usual, but it said there was a problem and I would need to delete the restoration file inc order to resume. Since I had saved my data so often, I agreed. When my computer restarted the file was reverted back 2 weeks. I have since learned that SPSS files don't create temporary files, but still I was saving continuously so this was very strange. No other files were impacted (none were open either though). Since this time my computer freezes several times each day - every time I leave it sit. It's like it cannot come out of 'hibernation mode'. At the time of my problem, I went to run my Sophos virus software but it wouldn't start?? I then installed Microsoft's free virus program and following that avast! antivirus (based on someone's recommendation). I have run Malewarebytes too and only a couple small (apparently insignificant files, as per another IT forum user) were detected. Another issue is that my taskbar freezes too when my computer freezes. Bottomline I have two questions: (1) should I just reinstall my OS to fix these problems? and (2) I bought a new computer (as I CANNOT lose anymore of my PhD work!) and I am scared to move over my necessary files, as I worry there is an undetected virus that could affect my new computer. I am not extremely computer literate. Mostly just an avid googler so bear with my lack of information or expertise.
My problem is that my computer keeps blue-screening and restarting. There is no correlation between what I am doing and the restarts. Sometimes I am using my computer during them and sometimes I get up to use the bathroom and come back to the login screen and an error message.
My hardware is decently old, probably 5 years. I have not taken it apart or messed with any internal components in the last month. I use my computer mostly for internet browsing and homework. Nothing very taxing. Any insight or help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

The other day my computer randomly just shut itself down, and then ever since has been freezing. The clock will freeze but the mouse wont, and the screen is usable for a couple minutes but then is not, and a forced shutdown is the only way to unlock. I have posted below the DDS, however the gmer wouldn't work it kept having to close, if you know a way around this please let me know. I have posted a hackthis file as well in the zipped folder. One of the things my virus scan picked up was exploit:html/repl.D but when i tried to remove it wasnt found. Please let me know if i can provide any more info. I have a dell inspiron e1505. Delete your existing copy of gmer. Please run this special version of gmer:

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here and Save it to your Desktop. Double-click gmer.exe to run it. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent.
If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO.



Click the image to enlarge it


In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...Sections
IAT/EAT
Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
Show All (don't miss this one)

Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.

I have a custom built computer that seems to have something wrong. It is constantly freezing, mouse getting stuck and just not seeming right. I has a GIGABYTE GA-Z68X-UD4-B3, I5-2500K, 120 Crucial SSD and many other Mechanical drives installed.

I had Windows 8 Pro installed and noticed the problems starting. I then installed Windows 7 thinking it maybe software, but problems persisted. What faulty hardware could it be and what tests should I start running. Memtest, what hard drive test is there for the SSD where the OS is installed. Appreciate some help on this issue.

Hi there guys I've been having what has to be the most frustrating freezes on startup in all history. I have this freeze that will happen on pretty much any mode that isnt PURE safe mode. Meaning that if I load up in Safemode Networking this freeze will happen there as well. But what happens is this
The comptuer starts up and gets to the windows 7 loading screen. I'll Try to login, at which it attempts to load up everything VERY slowly. At this point I'm at a bit of a time limit. If my pc doesnt fully load up in a certain time frame it will freeze. Whlie it's loading everything loads up slowly and I have a very small amount of time to load up an MP3 file. If I dont load up a song to play within this time frame and loop it infinitely, my comptuer will freeze without question at least 95% of the time. 5% of the time it MIGHT load up completely. But so far the load up mp3 loop forever trick is the only thing preventing my comptuer from freezing (If I can get that far).
 
As it stands i have no idea what is causing this problem, it's so bizarre... Please help!

This whole thing happened out of no where I have no idea how or from what, I have preformed many antivirus scans and anti malware scans and even though I remove everything the problem persists!

My computer has been freezing for a while and I haven't thought anything of it until recently when it started to freeze multiple times a day. Sometimes I would be doing something and other times I wouldn't be doing anything and it would just freeze. I've searched but I don't know what the problem is. All I know is that the light that blinks orange whenever I'm doing something goes away. Please help I'd really appreciate it. Thank you!

The very first issue can be that your system is running beyond it's hardware specifications. This occurs when getting too numerous programs running at the same time. If the amount of RAM in your system cannot handle it then your computer will freeze. The simple solution for this is to run fewer programs or buy additional RAM.

Some folks ask - what if windows 7 crashes when I only run a particular program? In this case you might need to update your drivers or system. Often times compatibility issues could cause your computer to freeze up. You can check the Microsoft Windows website for the latest updates.

If windows 7 freezes at random, then this problem should be relates to the registry. When the Windows registry is full of errors it can stop your system from properly running. The registry contains the information of your computer which is used to communicate between the OS, software, and hardware devices. When the registry becomes congested with errors, the communication procedure breaks down.

The recommended solution for this sort of Windows 7 freezing would be to clean the registry of corrupt files and various errors. Not just will this prevent pc crashing, it will also speed up your system considerably.

I have been good at keeping up with trying to keep my pc clean, but lately i seem to be having a ton of issues with my browser locking up and freezing. I am also having issues with my whole unit freezing as well, screen freezes, cursor doesnt move and have to hard restart the unit, i am unsure if it may be malware related or not. Hi, i'm having a really bothersome problem here, my computer is shutting down sometimes or either freezing and making weirds noises where i can't move even the mouse and i need to hard boot.

We do need the actual DMP file as it contains the only record of the sequence of events leading up to the crash, what drivers were loaded, and what was responsible.

You may be able to get the DMP files without crashing by booting into safe mode (F8) with networking.

To enable us to assist you with your computer's BSOD symptoms, upload the contents of your "\Windows\Minidump" folder.

My computer is constantly freezing up. On start-up things seem fine, but after a few minutes, I am unable to interact with anything cause the cursor indicates something is trying to load, but never does and then freezes.So I have no choice but to turn off my computer. I really need help, I am trying to avoid having to do a clean install, I don't know how to backup things properly, and Im afraid I will have to re-install alot. This is my first time on a forum like this and I need specialized help. Before I go on, here is all the list of things I have tried to tried to fix the problem with:

-Disk Check
-Disk Defragment
-System Restore (no restore points)
-Virus Scan with Mcafee and Malware Bytes (viruses/malware was found and removed, but problem persists)
-Last good Configuration

I am currently in Safe Mode with Networking and everything is fine there luckily.
Now I think I might know what the problem is, but I need to know how to fix it. In the Event Viewer, I see several errors:

Hey guys, recently, my computer has been freezing at completely random times during the day and always requires a hard reset to fix the problem (temporarily). I have no idea what is wrong, I have not really installed any new hardware or devices, except my iPod Touch I got around 2 weeks ago and my router I got around 3 weeks ago, but I have no idea if they are causing the problem because the freezing has been going on for around 5 days now...

Hi,

I think I have some sort of malware on my computer. It is constantly freezing on startup and I have to keep rebooting. There is also a permanent antivirusXP2008 window and the desktop has been changed. Google links have also been hijacked and I can't get onto this website from that computer (posting from a different one).

Could somebody please have a look at my hijack this log? I have tried a couple of scans (spybot and adaware) to no avail.

I have a 2 year old Dell desktop Dimension E521 with Windows XP. Recently it has been freezing several times a day, sometimes while on the internet (with both Firefox and Internet Explorer), sometimes when just working on a Word doc, sometimes with nothing open and the screen saver is on. When I hit Ctrl+Alt+Del the task manager doesn't even come up and I have to press the power button on the tower to get it to shut off. Ran several virus scans (AVG, avast!) and they say no virus, but a friend who is good with computers said it sounds like a virus. Cannot do a system restore, it goes through the process and then says "unable to restore to specified date". I have tried at least 10 dates and none work. A few times after it freezes there is a loud beep coming from the tower, I read in a previous forum that could be a fan problem, but I am also having other issues besides the beeping. Any ideas what I should do?? Thanks MP

Lately, I have been experiencing A LOT of problems with my computer. Programs frequently crash or run sluggishly. At times, my taskbar will crash and become frozen.

I have also noticed that I have a lot of process running (I am usually clocking in at somewhere around 45 processes). I have recently installed iTunes, which I can see has about 2 or 3 processes running at a time. I have also have recently run winUpdate and got some new files from that, but I don't know if that also has things running in the background.

I have ran CleanUp, AdAware, Spybot, and I have a Microsoft AntiSpyware constantly running in the background, so I don't think adware or spyware is the problem.

This is the only forum that I know of that can offer help for these kind of things, and you have proven to be very helpful in the past. If this is in the wrong place, I apologize.

A:Programs and computer constantly freezing or crashing... is spyware the problem?

One thing that could be causing your problems is the fact that you have both Norton And AVG running. You should never run two antiviruses at the same time. They conflict with each other and cause all sorts of problems as well as decrease your protection. You need to pick one and get rid of the other.

Also you need to disable some of those unnecessary apps you have running at startup. They are draining your computers resources.

For the last couple of weeks my computer has been running all sorts of slow, and I'm getting a lot of glitches I've never had before (recently, it appears to have shut down when I turn it off, but I find when I turn it back on it never went off in the first place, getting booted from browser consistently, etc). I also get an error message whenever I shut down about 'protector.exe' not being able to close, and when I tried to look it up I found only scary-sounding info from sites I don't exactly trust.
Anyway, not sure where to go with these problems, and I'm really hoping someone here can help. Thanks so much in advance for any input you can give!

I don't see anything in your log or your description of your problem to come to the conclusion that your problem is malware related. When there is malware present there will always be other internet related symptoms like popups or a browser hijack etc...

I will advise you to uninstall Microsoft Anti-Spyware as the version you have is very old and no longer supported. It in now called Windows Defender.

Here are some routine maintenance practices that you should do on a regular basis to keep your machine running efficiently. Go through this now and see if it helps:

Disk Cleanup:

Run chkdsk:

You'll get a message that the computer must be rebooted to run a complete check. Click Yes and reboot. Chkdsk will take awhile, so run it when you don't need to use the computer for something else.

Remove unnecessary startups

This should be done through the System Configuration Utility. Go to Start > Run and type in msconfig.
Click OK or hit the Enter key.

Click on the "Startup" tab and remove the check by the items that you have determined are unnecessary. Click "Apply" then "Close"

Hi,

Number of problems with my laptop but the main one now is that it constantly freezes (every 5 mins or so).
I wanted to post a log here from HijackThis but it says "your system denied write access to the Hosts".

Also both Malwarebytes & Avast! freeze the computer when I scan my computer for infections (this was happening a few months before the freezing every 5 mins started).

Really need to get this sorted now so I would appreciate any help!

My computer just hangs constantly now when im doing anything.

Like as I wrote this message it hung a few times while i type.

It hangs only for like 3 seconds and i have no idea why. It's been fine for about 2 years and all of a sudden this starts.

I havent installed anything new lately so I dont know what to do.

I ran spybot once already and it didnt really fine anything.
I ran ccleaner on registry and cleaner.
Deleted a bunch of my stuff i no longer use and defragmented once.

Hi! My computer is very slow booting up and has drastically slowed down (or freezes) navigating between files/programs, opening and closing programs, etc.... I recently re-installed Microsoft Office 2007 and shortly before that had to re-install Java as well. Java Applets were not loading and running. Last time I had both of these programs installed, both seemed to cause the same problem- slowed common functions down (issues mentioned above) or froze. My computer has been doing strange things lately:

First it kept restarting itself and running scandisk microsoft said the problem was related to AOL. I have since reinstalled the AOL software and that problems seems to be better, but not sure if it just hasn't happened again.

Next, my computer has crashed several other times this week and online crash analysis from microsoft have told me several things. One was related to a Memories disc AFS/AFS2k driver, which I have no idea about, but installed some download it recommended to fix it--hopefully I will not recieve that error again.

Now my computer keeps freezing, to the point where I have to hold the button in and turn it off to get the computer working again at all. When I turn the computer back on, it of course runs scandisk, I got some other crash anaylsis yesterday about some driver, but of course before I could fix the problem or save the response, my computer froze again. This has happened like three more times since, but this time with no error logs from microsoft, the computer just starts back up.

I ran spybot, adaware, and a Mcaffe Virus scan all came up clean.
So I thought if no one has any other suggestions why my computer is doing this to me I would post a hijack this log and see what someone more knowlegable might find.

So around a month ago i was trying to download an audiobook torrent for the book 'the road'. i clicked the torrent (i wasn't on pirate bay) anyway my computer went nuts from there, for the last month my computer has been extremely slow. I have since downloaded Malwarebytes, HyjackThis, and McAfee. Their is one Trojan that Malwarebytes has been unable to delete, even upon restart. I have also run pandasoft scans, however my computer freezes generally 30-45 min after being turned on. So i haven't gotten the results from that in a few weeks...but when i ran it last night it was saying at 13% of completion it had found 16 suspicious things.

I just completed another Malwarebytes scan, and i will paste it on below my HyjackThis log. Thank you VERY much, if you can figure out what i should do i would greatly appreciate it!! Thanks so much!!

Hi,
My computer has been freezing up something awful. I can't download any programs or updates for any other programs. When it freezes the Task manager freezes as well and I have to manually shut down the computer.
I have Win XP Pro SP2. I use Firefox as my main browser. I have Norton, Spybod S&D, Spysweeper, CWShredder and have run them all and they all come back clean.

My computer has been very slow and occasionally freezing up the past few days. It has never donme this before. I am running windows 2000. I have webroot spysweeper (purchased at office depot), zone alarm firewall, and symantec anti-virus. I've also downloaded bazooka and spy hunter free anti-spyware. none of the anti-spyware programs shows anything except: spy hunter shows "seekseek" in a certain registry location, but will not remove it without my buying the full software. I looked around and found instructions for removing seekseek myself, and based on that it looks like I don't have it: the files I am supposed to remove are not on my computer, either in the places they say they should be, or, based on a search, at all; and the registry entries I am supposed to change aren't there either. Is this a scam to get me to buy the software, or is the seekseek program sometimes in different places and in different forms than what I read?

of course, i get a dozen or more e-mails every day with virus attachments on them. I never open them, and often get the notification windows asking me what to do. I always choose to delete the attachment, then i delete the e-mail altogether and then empty the deleted items folder.

I particpate in several list serves, and sometimes open attachments, but of course not if there's been a warning the attachment is infected.

alright here's teh problem that im having a major problem with:

- whenever i start up my computer, the desktop loads really slow; its lagging to the max

- the icon on the desktop cannot be clicked on

- when u move the mouse to the bottom taskbar, the arrow-icon turns to the loading-icon one

i can press [Start] but if i click to go anywhere like My Document, nothing shows up

it's like the entire computer frozed within some minutes of starting up.

please help! i see some "surfsidekick" i dont think that should be there..
but i donno how to fix my problems since i cant click anywhere to go anywhere

This problem just started today. If i open anything it will randomly freeze up and when i do ctrl+alt+delete it wont open my task manager. I have no idea what it is. I can't even finish running a virus scan because it will freeze halfway through.. please help! it is much appreciated

I updated a compaq laptop computer from ME to XP. I added 256 ram on the laptop since it only had 56.

It was working fine and I returned it to the owner and they said whenever they were using AOL it was freezing.

I started working with it and it was freezing so muchand it keep checking the disks for errors and correcting the problems. I decided to reformat and reinstall. That is completed but now when I go to windows update it freezes. I've tried typing it in, going thru explorer and trying to go to www.microsoft.com and then a link from there but as soon as it gets to the windows update address it freezes.

Any suggestions?

Hi

I really hope someone can help me with this after installing windows 8 and using it for the past 3 weeks now I have found that my pc is freezing and not closing down properly and this gets worse with each day. I am unable for some reason to go back to windows 7 using the factory restore tool!!. But I will say I do like using windows 8 but these crashes are now beginning to get on my nerves due to them happening constantly all day.

I have uploaded a zip file with my events log and hoping that if I can get these fixed I will be happy to stay with windows 8. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

My current pc keeps constantly freezing and is beginning to do it ever more constantly.
It also has a tendency to reboot aswell.

I have tried to find the cause of this and have a minidump file saying its due to an nt driver.
I have windows firewall on and run eset smart security and over the last few days have run spybot s&d, super anti spyware, ccleaner, malwarebytes and eset all within safe mode to make sure system is clean.

Is it possible that my old x1650 needs replaced or possibly my hard drive as it is quite old now ?

I have a 1.60 GHz pentium with 256 MB of ram, running XP Pro 2002 Service Pack 2. I would say this system is 4 or 5 years old now.

I took my computer in for service the first part of June, had the hard drive wiped clean and a clean install of the XP Pro. Last week it just started going haywire. The screen would go black and it would freeze (mouse and keyboard--no Ctl-Alt-Del). I took it in to the shop last Thursday, and they removed an internet filtering program that I had downloaded. That helped quite a bit, but it still freezes on me. Sometimes I can work for 4 hours, sometimes 5 minutes before it freezes. I could not even work on it today, it froze constantly. I also replaced the mouse because the driver was old and the problem seemed possibly to be mouse related. That also did not help the problem--in fact, I think the old mouse worked better. I have run Scan Disk several times, Spybot, AVG, and CCleaner. No viruses detected. The whole system seems to be running slower than usual, too. I do notice some graphics involvement when it freezes--the mouse will be cut in half or there will be a little vertical line.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

For the past two months my laptop has been freezing inexplicably most often when browsing the internet, the weird part is that it'll freeze the first time but when i restart it it acts stable.I tried system restore, cleaning the registry, AV scans and spyware scans (With multiple programs), updated all drivers, defraged the hard drive

The only two things that u can think of is my Zone Alarm Firewall interfering with AVG (I heard this happens sometimes) or the numerous errors in the events viewer listed below:

it looks like you have avg and microsoft security essentials both running- I would un install mse and see if that fixes the problem as they may may (or may not?) play well together. My hard drive was replaced 3 weeks ago. I installed OS and the bear minimum software. I then installed all patches/updates to OS and office that were available through windows update. ever since day 1 - this computer will not stop freezing up... it is constant. I have already posted here and had computer hijacked - I have ad-aware and run it daily. the puter even freezes on start -up on occassion - rarely runs for more than 1/2 hour at a time.... always will freeze when it isn't used for several minutes... all power settings have been shut off - no screen saver/powering down monitor/or hibernation .... I feel like it could be a driver... I already uninstalled Nvidia Gforce3 ... so windows is using a generic video driver - hardware settings shows nvidia being disabled. I don't know what else to do . Here is an updated hijack log. Any advice?

OK I know MSN freezes on all computers every now and again but mine has been playing up a lot lately.

In the past it has frozen during conversations etc...But in the past few days it shuts down immediately upon opening it (each time).

It says 'Not Responding'.

I've tried closing it while frozen using Task Manager however this does not work - (I've left it 5mins+ to close - nothing happens!)

I've tried Shutting Down or Restarting the computer. Each time it takes about 1-2mins to respond and then it says 'Logging out' and then 'Shutting Down'.
However it stays on the 'Shutting Down' screen for ages. I've left it on one for 2hrs.

Each time I end up having to just manually shutting down the laptop by cutting the power...



Anyone know how to resolve this?

I installed driver version 362.00 and everything worked great. I played Dark Souls 3 for about an hour with 65% fan speed, after a 10 min break I played CS GO then the problem started to happen. Screen tear is present and my game freezes then recovers. The audio will also freeze in that frame. I uninstalled my nvidia drivers with DDU and clean installed the latest driver but the problem still persist.

Alright, I'm at my wits end with this machine. I've re-installed XP at least five times, I've tried different RAM, and I've even tried another hard drive. All it does is freeze, right after the install, so I know it's not any software that's causing it. Common sense tells me it's the RAM, but I've replaced that.

Any help appreciated.

Computer freezes constantly, usually in IE, but also in other programs as well.
No error messages shown.

Am running Vista and IE7; have ZoneAlarm firwall, run Spybot S&D at least once a week; also have resident ParetoLogic Antivirus Plus.
Please note: ZoneAlarm disabled only momentarily and purposely at time of this posting.

Been having problems with my keyboard freezing, at first I found that taking the battery out, holding esc for 30 seconds then setting the bios to saved defaults worked as a temporary fix, but as time has went on it has gotten worse, every time I manage to get the keyboard working again as soon as I play anything with sound ie YouTube or iTunes it freezes again and won't work until I do the bios reset, but if I don't play anything with sound it works fine.


Another method I tried was taking the battery out holding the power button for 30 seconds then the windows key and the letter b and resetting the bios to factory settings but even this has not worked. I'm totally stumped as to why this keeps happening as it is so out of the blue, I've also tried reinstalling the keyboard drivers but this did not work either. Would appreciate any help.

Hi,

I have this laptop I sto- I mean borrowed from my brother and I have been having constant bother from it.

It began with the problems of two broken keys (G and H) and a problem with connecting to the internet...

So I sent it off.

When it came back from a computer repair company called "Tech Guys" (This is in England, by the buy) and it made things worse. It then started freezing on occasions and the date and time settings were broken.

I sent it off again,

They replaced the motherboard because it was corrupted but then freezing became the terrible condition and I sent it off, again and again. But they didn't fix it. They didn't send me a new one either. Luckily we get unlimited fixes because we pay.

I want to fix it, could you guys kindly look into it?

Hi there,

I am hoping there is someone that can help me solve an issue I have been having with my computer. Over the last couple of months, the computer has been freezing. It all started with the BSOD but that has stopped and now the whole system is freezing. Sometimes it will freeze right when I log in, sometimes I can work on it for 10-15 minutes before it freezes and sometimes I can work for a couple of hours before it freezes. I end up having shut the computer off at the cpu and start all over. The only time it does not freeze is when I am running in safe mode. This is what I have done so far:

- Removed any programs I thought might be the problem, ie., Windows Live Movie Maker, Skype, Logitech webcam etc.
- Did a registry clean using Eusing Registry Cleaner
- Cleaned up any errors using Errorend

I am totally at a loss at what might be causing this problem and I'm hoping there is someone out there that can help me out. I have attached the Windows_NT6_BSOD_jcgriff2 file.

You have 56 minidump files and yes that's a lot I will start going through them in a couple of minutes. First you need to do 2 things.

1. Run a full updated scan using your anti-virus

2. Download malwarebytes and run a full scan here is the link and use the free version.

Malwarebytes : Free anti-malware, anti-virus and spyware removal download

Please give us the results of these two scans as soon as possible...

Please DO NOT use any registry cleaner they can them selfs cause a lot of problems within your system. Remove it from your system and as we go we will show you and tell you what you can use.

My system has been freezing constantly the last few days.. at first it was overnight, then at random times, then it also started restarting for no reason at random times, now it can barely get past a restart without freezing on the windows xp screen. I've even tried running safe mode and it frooze there too.

I recently had some help from this forum last week removing a virus. I'm not sure if that might of had anything to do with it or not.

I'm not sure if I'm in the right place. Probably get bumped.

So whenever I visit TSN.ca or any other Bell media website, the video I choose to watch freezes. Whenever I visit these websites on my smart phone or anyone's computer but my own, it works perfectly fine.

I have tried turning off all my plugins concerning advertsing (ghostery, ABP) and still the same issues. I have updated java and flash and was unable to fix it. Other websites carrying videos including Youtube have not been affected by this issue.

I do not believe this is a network issue, nor a hardware issue since other websites work fine. This website used to work perfectly for me as well. Something has changed and I need to find out what.

This computer is used by more than one person and my roomate didn't understand the warning message Avast gave when a bad file was dowloaded, and it was allowed on the computer and now the computer is infected. He doesn't know what the file was called or any information unfortunately. The symptoms are that Explorer constantly freezes for the most inane actions like opening a folder. I'm running Vista on a Hp Pavillon dv9417ca Notebook PC with 2 gigs of Ram, AMD Turion 64 X2 1.8 GHz processor, and a 160 gig harddrive that keeps changing size(Part of the infection).

I first cleaned out the temp files with ATFcleaner
Then I ran Malwarebytes and ran it again from Safe mode
I then ran Avast from a boot scan.
I finally ran Kaspersky online scanner.

Nothing was found by any of these.

I was going to try to use combofix but I read on the site that it can damage my system and since I'm ignorant of its function, I won't.

Any help would be more than appreciated.

i've had my laptop for a year now and i've never had ANY problems with it whatsoever. well, i took my husband's external hard drive b/c mine is falling apart and i was freaking out i'd lose everything on it, so put it all on his for extra backup. well, that was DAYS ago, maybe 4-5. i'm not sure this has anything to do with it, but i wanted to mention that's the only new thing i've done, besides the usual.

at school on thursday, i brought the external in so my classmate could put a program (visual studio 2008) on it for me. his microsoft security essentials went off with about 4 worms/trojans. he said he cleaned it off, but now ever since then, my laptop keeps freezing! it doesn't matter what i do or load up, it'll freeze within 2 minutes.

essentials said it successfully deleted the worms, so i'm not sure that's it. it's just weird that after he hooked up the external to his laptop, it caused MINE to freeze, even though i don't have it hooked up to my laptop. i hooked it up when i got home from school and then took it off b/c it started freezing. while i was sitting there, though, he wanted to make sure none of it got onto his (he has windows 7), he ran his antivirus through and nothing came up, so he said he didn't get any of it.

I recently got a used HP Compaq nx9010 and I just installed Windows xp home on it. It doesnt seem to matter what I'm doing on it, I totally freeze at any (& several) random times. Nothing phases it except shutting it off & restarting. Any clue where to start?

P.S. I am at a motel that has wireless internet. I bought a Netgear wireless card for the laptop yesterday but I seem to get kicked off quite quite often. My desktops connection still will still be connected fine but just the laptop will suddenly show no connection. Also sometimes my laptop will show I'm connected at a very fast mbps but show signal strength at very low & it varies how I run then . Any clue on it?

I've had my laptop for about 2 years now and never had any trouble with it, but for the past week it freezes straight as a I log on and won't go back to working again. After running virus scans in safe mode (it usually freezes half way through them) and leaving it off for 24 hours it worked fine again for about 2 hours then the same thing happened again. Tried to run the scans again but nothing happened. A week ago (just before this all started) I connected my new iPhone 5 to the laptop and it froze it then, so I went to system restore back to the date this happened, then it crashed during that, now the thing doesn't even recognise its on charge and won't switch back on at all?

I'm not sure if the OS is the problem, as my parents computer runs windows 7 (same version I have) and never experianced the problem that I know of.

I've had my computer for about 2 weeks, (friend helped me build it). In that time it's frozen about 5 times, twice in one day, and 3 in the past 2 days. It's an ENTIRE computer freeze, nothing responds beyond the restart button/power button. Once it restarts it's fine, until it happens again.

Music/sound has been playing each time, short of one time, and when it freezes it loops the current noise with an area of about 0.5 ish seconds of the track, sometimes a little more by the sound of it. If I turn off the speakers/turn it out/up it reacts, so I know it's just because it froze that the sound is looping constantly usually creating a loud buzzer noise.

I've been having some graphics problems as well, but I ran a downgraded version update and it's still happening. (Not that it's related, just something I tried for another reason and the freezing continued). It doesn't look like it's triggered by anything specific since i've been doing different things each time it happened.

Any help is appreciated, thank you.

Things will be fine for a few seconds or minutes, but then Windows freezes. It'll freeze for a few seconds, sometimes ten to fifteen, and then it'll go back to normal. It doesn't matter what I am doing; the problem happens regardless. I can't save anything to disk to back up for a re-install of Windows or anything because the freezing screws up the saving. In addition, I cannot reboot or shut down the computer manually; the process hangs at the "Windows is shutting down" phase, and doesn't move along, no matter how long I wait. What can be causing this and, more importantly, what can fix this?

All help greatly appreciated.

can any one say this wht happend to my pc ?it loads the operating system (windows xp)and runs for some amount of time(15 minutes) after that it will stuck ,no further movement ,i cant do any thing, even cntl+alt+del.the only idea is switch off the machine.again same process repeats .please give me answer.even i cant install new os ,in the bois setup also it will stuck after 5 mins.

Hi there! New here, so I will try my best to describe what is going on. First off, I want to say that i am NOT at all computer saavy..I know the basics, so I apologize for the tons of questions I will probably end up asking..if you can help me , that is.
I am running Win XP Home, AMD Athlon XP Processor 1.67GHz, 256 MB RAM. If you need any other info, PLEASE let me know.
A few weeks ago, all of a sudden , my pc started running a bit sluggish, mouse was really lagging too. The pc started freezing up on me...the pointer would still move freely , but if I go to click on anything, nothing happens, it just sits. Also, the comp will just restart. I will be reading mail, on a message board , looking something up..and it will happen, so I'm not noticing and particular moment that it does this. The thing is , it is to the point now where i am lucky to get online! It will freeze before I can even connect now.There is also a box popping up saying this...

and also...

I have no clue what these mean, why they are coming up all of a sudden or what to do about them.

Seems to me that you have you video drivers missing or something.

Are you running multiple monitors? Anyway, try Start=>Run=>msconfig
Then go to the startup tab and search for a line called rundll32.exe nview.dll,nViewLoadHook or something similar. The Startup Item should be nview. Uncheck it.

This one should be related to your drivers. Can you find out the name of your graphic card? Drivers page This is the page to download drivers for the graphics. Check if you see anything familar.

I got my new Yoga 900 in the mail about two days ago and ever since it's been randomly freezing - more frequently recently.  It froze once on the first day of use and I chalked it up to errors with Windows 10.  It froze once more before I updated Windows and today after updating Windows it froze four times in one day.  There's no error message or anything, it just freezes completely without a BSOD and the only way to use it again is to shut it off and turn it back on. Aside from uninstalling bloatware and updating Windows with windows update, I haven't made any modifications to the software or anything.  I haven't dropped it and it's always been put in a case when stowed in my backpack.  I've babied this thing every step of the way.  What's causing this?  I'm really disappointed in having these problems with a brand new $1300 laptop.  Is this common?

     If all of the "bloatware" you are referring to, includes the Lenovo Companion, and Settings, you probably didn't receive the updates provided by Lenovo.
 
    Still, if you go here:

   ... and compare your installed driver versions, to the Lenovo driver list, then update to the new, you should be all set.
 
     Make note that there is a new BIOS, C6CN34WW, so if you're not on that revision, update the BIOS first.
