Every time the computer is turned on or restarted it runs Starup Repair. When i look at the diagnosis it says 'boot critical file c:\ci.dll is corrupt'. I have already tried to restore the computer but i don't have the discs where i have backed up the computer. I have also run a virus scan with Avira and it did pick up 4 viruses and i removed them but the error still occurs. If someone could help me and give me guidance it'll be much appreciated.

A:Startup Repair error : Boot critical file c:\ci.dll is corrupted

After the PC tries the start up repair, select advanced options. From there you should be able to access CMD.

Once you get CMD open run this command. sfc /scannow -This will scan the integrity of all protected system files and repairs the system files if needed.

Sino, you have an Xupiter infection. You should be able to remove it by installing, UPDATING, and running Spybot, following directions here. Be sure to reboot afterwards.

http://tomcoyote.org/SPYBOT/index1.html

You may also need to run the CoolwebShredder as you have been hijacked by it as well:

http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/cwshredder.zip

For good measure you might want to try Ad-Aware :

Ad-Aware Home Page and Ad-Aware 6: Reference Guide by Winchester73

I'm going to split this off so you have your own thread. We prefer that to "piggybacks"

Welcome to TSG...

Also, when done, post a HijackThis Scanlog instead:

http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/

If you get a missing msvbm60 error when trying to run it, you will need to install updated VB runtime files

When I log off from my user account on Win XPPro, I get some kind of quick error message which I am unable to read.

I did recently remove McAfee Security Center and I notice in the log file there are a couple of lines referencing McAfee. I'm not sure if those hurt anything or not.

Can you please review my file and see if you see anything suspicious? I have run and updated Spybot and Adaware and both are clean.

Thanks!

Yesterday, while using my computer, my anti-virus 'Microsoft Security Essentials' popped up stating it had found a virus. Within a second, a windows update window popped up with an update ready to install, followed immediatly by 'AntiSpyware Doctor' and a window saying 'Windows has encountered a serious error and will shut down in one minute' which it then proceeded to do. This continues to appear everytime the computer is started.

Starting the computer in safe mode allowed me to use Malware Bytes to eliminate Antispyware docter, as it no longer appears when starting the computer, however the error message ,above, still continues. I believe the problem occurs only when the computer is connected to the internet as it does not occur if i am able to stop my computer from automatically connecting to the internet upon startup.

I tried a system restore, however it fails and reports a problem with a file in the drivers folder in the system 32 folder. I am unable to interact with this file at all as the computer tells me it is unable to find the source disc whenever i try.

I have access to a Windows Install disc.

A few days ago I turned on my computer and noticed that Microsoft Security Essentials was turned off. When I tried to turn it on, it would not turn on. I uninstalled / re-installed MSE and it turned on. Almost immediately I got a message that said I had 2 severe threats that had been quarantined and that MSE was cleaning my computer. Right away got a message that said "Windows has encountered a critical error and will shutdown in one minute. Please save your work." My computer loops through this cycle continuously. I tried "shutdown -a" command, with a response of "Shutdown in progress" before it shuts down. The information on the 2 threats is the same- Trojan file:C:\Windows\System32\services.exe

Hello, my computer has been really slow lately starting up and shutting down. I've tinkered a bit with the services, following the services guide at The Elder Geek's website. I've only shut down the services it recommends, or that I don't use on my computer.

Also, sometimes when I boot up, instead of going to the black screen with Windows and the scrollbar, it goes straight to a full black background with only the following:

"SiI 3132 SATALink BIOS Version 7.3.13
Copyright (C) 1997-2006 Silicon Image, Inc."

I've been trying to figure out just what's been causing this and can't really find much. I've considered flashing the BIOS, but I've never done that. My motherboard manufacturer's website recommends to do it only if I'm sure it will fix my problem, which I'm not.

I've tried cleaning the dust from the inside of the case with a can of air. Had some problems with my DVD drive reading slowly and that fixed it, so thought I'd try it on the rest as well.

According to Belarc Advisor, here are the specs on the pieces of hardware for my computer:

Operating System
Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 (build 2600)

Processor
2.67 gigahertz Intel Core 2 Duo

A:Slow startup/shutdown, and strange startup message

By that error it seems as if your hard drive is a SATA drive. Make sure the wires that go from the power supply and main board are securely in place. I had a similar problem with a 300gb drive and it ended up being that I was using a converter for the hard drives power and not the power cable that plugged directly in from the power supply. Make sure you power down your computer before tinkering around in it though, might even want to unplug it and let it sit for like 10secs first.

Yesterday I was infected with Live Security Platinum, wich I've never heard about but I was able to get rid of it with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. After that I noticed that Microsoft Security Essentials needed an update, so I updated it. Problem is, after 30 minutes or so I get the "windows has encountered a critical error and will restart automatically in one minute. Please save your work." message. MSE detected 2 Trojans, C:\Windows\System32\services.exe and services731.Now every time I start up my computer, after some seconds I get the same message and my computer restarts in 1 minute. I tried some solutions to fix this, including using the "shutdown -a" shortcut and choosing Disable Automatic Restart On System Failure in the Advanced Boot Options menu.None of that worked. My problem is identical to the topic "Virus + critical error shutdown" started by cbritton7, about a month ago (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic458922.html).I'm running Windows7 32bit Home Premium.Farbar Recovery Scan Tool scan log:Scan result of Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST written by Farbar) Version: 25-07-2012 01Ran by SYSTEM at 31-07-2012 23:30:52Running from E:\Windows 7 Home Premium (X86) OS Language: English(US) The current controlset is ControlSet002========================== Registry (Whitelisted) =============Winlogon\Notify\LBTWlgn: c:\program files\common files\logishrd\bluetooth\L... A:Critical error Event ID 41 after every shutdown and bootup.

RESOLVED:

Since placing this thread, I was addressing other errors I found in the event logs. One of those had to do with "Metadata staging failed".

Researching about this error let me to the URL:

http://www.eightforums.com/bsod-cras...-failed-3.html

where poster Saammy gave the following possible solution:

I have the solution for the problem.
Searches on regedit for the following entry: DeviceMetadataServiceURL
There you change the URL in the following: http://dmd.metaservices.microsoft.com/dms/metadata.svc
after you have closed the editor is saved the change.
Now the problem is solved and it will also re-loaded device information.

As instructed, I used regedit and searched for "DeviceMetadataServiceURL", and it's value was set to:

http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?Link...69&clcid=0x409

I changed the value to "http://dmd.metaservices.microsoft.com/dms/metadata.svc" and then rebooted.

The end result was that this did indeed fix the "Metadata staging failed" errors, and interestingly enough the Event ID 41 is no longer showing up in the event logs after shutdown/reboot. I did 5 shutdown/reboot sequences... 1 per hour, and neither problem has occurred since making the above change.

I recently have been getting the Error message Windows has encountered a critical error and will close in one minute.
I do not have the Brazilian financial Active X control that became corrupted, or if I do, I cannot find it. I have Vista 32-bit on an Acer Aspire laptop. This message comes up after I login and I can either access the Internet via Safe mode w/Networking, or do a System Restore, at which time the laptop works for about two or three times and then the error message comes back.
Do I have a bug? Please help!!!!

I followed the preparation guide and when I tried to run dds.scr, the black screen came up really fast and then disappeared and nothing ever came up. When I tried to run RootRepeal.exe, I was able to tell it to scan, but then I never received a report. When I tried to run it again, it said that I didn't have permission, and when I tried to delete it, it said the same thing! I am the administrator...I have Vista 32bit and I am getting the error code 0x80070005 windows has encountered a critical error and will now close. I run system restore to get it to stop, but that only works a few times, and then I get the error message again.
What do I do now??

Hi, everybody. I downloaded Windows 10 from the the Microsoft site, because I had reserved a free copy. I had Window 8.1 before this.

Up till now, it seems that most things worked fine. I tweaked it a little and allowed the new program to "get used to my desktop." After first being unable to transfer stuff over, Windows 10 finally began complying with requests for switching things, etc.

A brand-new problem has begun with the Start icon, which is the Micro "flag" at the lower left of the screen. Every time I hit it in order to sign off, I get a message..... "Critical Error. Your Start Menu button isn't working. We'll try to fix it the next time you sign in." It offers me a box to sign off within the error message, fortunately. I went on line and found that a number of people are experiencing this same problem. And many of their concerns are directed to others in the Microsoft Community website. By the way, it doesn't happen all the time, only most of the time. When it doesn't happen, it seems to be because I've cleared by temporary files, emptied my trash bin, and deleted the adware that has accumulated with each use. If I'm lucky, that is.

Another thing I've noticed. I use Superantispyware, among other malware detectors. I've used it for XP, 8.1 and now 10. Each time it has picked up a bit more adware and minor spyware. But, recently, I have found that when I'm done PC-ing and ready to shut down, af... Read more

Hi,

I'm an intern with an NGO organization where one of the desktop computers started having problems about a week ago. The computer is a Dell running Windows 7. Every morning, the first person to turn it on sees a whole bunch of updates being installed. The boot screen is irregular, it doesn't include the F2 or F12 options for changing the setup, and it never goes to the log screen. Instead, it goes to a "Startup Repair" window, runs a "scan" that can't be canceled, and then reports that Windows was unable to fix the problem and offers an option to restart. If I click to see the full diagnostic, everything checks out except the last item, which says that "critical boot file ci.dll is corrupt." If I go to "Advanced Diagnostic Tools," it doesn't allow to me do a system restore or much of anything else besides open the command prompt, and I can do only limited diagnostic tasks from there. If I restart, though, it restarts and functions perfectly normally. I installed Avast on there when I started working with it and the full virus scan finds no problems. The computer functions normally for the rest of the day; however, when I go to shut it down after 5 oclock, it says that it's installing 67 updates, every single day.

I can't figure out whether this is some bizarre virus that just makes it take a little longer to use the computer every morning, or a much more malicious virus whose effects simply haven't mani... Read more

Hello,

Last week I got the Live Security Platinum virus on my laptop (was running the latest version of MS security essentials). I tried running malwarebytes, but was unable (the program would not launch), and my MS Security Essentials seems to have been uninstalled/disabled.

I tried booting in to safe mode & safe mode w/command prompt, but to no avail. The virus seems to have happened after I installed an adobe update, but I can't be certain.

After seeing another post here for a user with a very similar problem, I've run the FRST tool and have attached my log below.

One or two links here indicate there may be conflcts with installed programs, for example gravis.

http://groups.google.com/groups?q="CoInitialize(NULL)+failed+&hl=en

You can also try disabling dma mode in the cd-rom device manager properties>settings page, although it did not work for one person who tried it. It does sometimes resolve install problems.

Check with the vendor's support to see if there are any known install conflicts that would produce that error.

I was on my laptop today when I got a blue screen and my wallpaper changed to say that I have a critical warning. The exact desktop message reads: "YOUR SYSTEM IS INFECTED! System has been stopped due to a serious malfunction. Spyware activity has been detected. It is recommended to use spyware removal tool to prevent data loss. Do not use the computer before all spyware removed."I managed to get rid of the desktop message (using AntiVir until the scan stopped for no apparent reason. The scan did not complete and I can't get it to scan again.) Under Desktop, the "critical_warning" file still appears in the list. The current wallpaper is the blue screen without the message written out above and I can't change it because this Desktop/Background page is locked up.My homepage was changed (to google, oddly). I cannot access system restore, nor can I use Malewarebytes or other antivirus programs because I get a message that reads: "Windows cannot access the specified file. You may not have permissions to access the item." I have AntiVir PE Classic, which also won't fully run (it starts scanning, then stops).Fortunately, I have a desktop so that I can post here and try to resolve the problem. Would someone please walk me through fixing this problem? Thank you very much!Edit: Moved topic from XP to the more appropriate forum. ~ Animal

Good Afternoon,

So Im fairly adept with computers but I cant seem to solve this problem.

On my VAIO FZN, there seems to be a virus which has taken control of my computer, most likely some sort of rootkit. When the computer starts

it says "You are about to be logged off - Windows has encountered a critical problem and will restart automatically in one minute. Please save your work now."

after about 3-5minutes. BUT the catch is that this only occurs when the computer has the front LAN switch turned on. when this switch is off it works fine except for that I cant connect to the internet. I have run multiple AV programs which have removed some viruses but obviously not the main problem.
I have also run Kaspersky Rescue Disk 10 from my flashdrive which was successful in its scan but since the computer cant get online it wont run the full program (to update), at least I dont think it has.
Please let me know if you have any suggestions,

Thanks so much,
Blake

Hi and welcome to TSF.

My name is Iain and I will be helping you clean your system.

You may wish to Subscribe to this thread (Thread Tools > Subscribe to this thread) so that you are notified when you receive a reply.

Please read these instructions carefully and then print out or copy this page to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out the fix. You should not have any open browsers or live internet connections when you are following the procedures below.

Note that the fix may take several posts. Please continue to respond to my instructions until I confirm that your logs are clean. Remember that although your symptoms may vanish, this does NOT mean that your system is clean.

If there is anything you don't understand, please ask BEFORE proceeding with the fixes.

Please ensure that you follow the instructions in the order I have them listed.

We'll begin with ComboFix. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix

**Note: It is important that ComboFix is saved directly to your desktop**

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console. This will help us restore your system in the event of a serious crash. It's very simple to complete and will only take a few moments. A quick guide is detailed below.

Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

...that's my computer...

my son recently got a Thomas & friends Trouble on the Tracks Interactive cd-rom, and although it says it is for WIN 95/98, i tried running it compatible with both and neither worked, also i read reviews about this game and apparently other people have not had problems running it with windows XP...

it installs just fine and says i need DirectX version 7.0 or higher, which it installs also...and i have uninstalled and reinstalled it several times...

everytime i go to open/play/run the program the screen goes black like it's about to start, then a critical error message pops up that reads: Invalid ID in load header

now i obviously don't know what that means but could it simply not be working cuz the game is too old for my computer???

Help!

TIA. jenn.

I having this problem with an icon in my bottom right task tray. When I move my mouse over it, it says "Critical System Error!", but when I click it, it opens up some site for anti-virus software (www.virusburst.com). I have ran numerous anti virus scans and nothing cam up, so I know I am safe, but this icon wont go away. Every once in a while, a baloon will pop up saying something about I need a malware scan, but when I click it, it opens up the site again. I tried restarting my computer, but it still shows. Is there an executable I need to delete or how do I get rid of it?

Hi and welcome
Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

A:Messenger Service: Critical Error Message!

Do the pop up advertisements look like the one in the example shown here? If so, it indicates your system is not secure and you should follow the instructions to "Disable Windows Messenger Service". The Messenger service is a network-based system notification service service that transmits net send messages and messages that are sent through the Alerter service between client computers and servers. It should not be confused with Windows Messenger which is a proprietary instant messaging client included in Windows XP, 2000 and 2003 Server.

Hello!
My brothers computer has some serious problem I think
after booting up there is a message poping up which says
"System restored after critical error message"
when looking into details it says
"Problem signature:
BCCode: 100000d1 BCP1: 00000000 BCP2: 00000000C BCP3: 00000000
BCP4: BCP$: 81B84030 OSVer: 5_1_2000 SP: 2_0 Product: 768_1"
I have no idea about these things and dont know if you need anything else.
I reinstalled windows XP several times allready after this error occured but it didnt get better..
so i think it might be some hardware error. it is very hard to work on this pc right now, because the mouse isnt working either and it has gotten damn slow..
The pc is allready 5 years old too.. but he doesnt want to buy a new one, but he would like to buy some new hardware components if necessary. The PC got 1,66 ghz and 256 MB ram.

I allready changed the windows settings so it wont reboot automatically but give me a blue screen instead.
on the blue screen it says:
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

Technical information:
STOP: 0x0000000A (0x0509FA04, 0x0000001C, 0x00000001, 0x806F2891)

and much informational text which only says talk to your administrator..
I just made a hijackthis log too, but im not sure if it is of any help..
BTW: The date and time is wrong.. just made the scan but the date is wrong on his pc.

Hi..I just bought a refurbished computer. Its an HP Desktop Computer COMPAQ 6005 PRO Phenom II X3 3.0 GHz 4 GB 250 GB HDD Windows 7 Professional 64-Bit .

In order to install windows for the first time on this refurbished machine, I have to choose "system restore" at boot.
It starts to go through the process of installing windows, then I get this message : "Windows Restore Critical Failure. This can be caused by a missing Windows image".
Anyone know how I can fix this. I cant get into windows, because I first have to install it using the system restore. So the only computer access I have, is when it boots up.

I have tried to contact Newegg...which is where I bought it, but no luck. All repairs and service is through the warranty company...cant get in touch with them either.

Any advice is appreciated!

Thanks.

I recently purchased this All-In-One and now I am getting this error message.  I have tried finding an email to contact HP Support and there is none. HP computers are a pile of worthless crap!!!! Now I know what most companies use Dell.  At least the computers operate with a system that isn't a pile of crap. HP Support sucks and I would never recommend anyone buying one.

I have brought your issue to the attention of an appropriate team within HP. They will likely request information from you in order to look up your case details or product serial number. Please look for a private message from an identified HP contact. Additionally, keep in mind not to publicly post serial numbers and case details.

If you are unfamiliar with how the Forum's private message capability works, this post has instructions.

When will HP or Microsoft create a fix for this error? There are 236,000 posts about this on Microsoft Community. Yet no fix. "Windows 10 Critical Error Startup not working" I worked with the HP IT, the only workaround is creating a new account profile with administrative rights. Setting up that account then  copying your files to that account. It takes too much time for a temporary  fix. This has happened to me 3 times since I bought my computer 2 months ago and no one has a permanent fix! I can not keep creating new profile accounts, it take too long to copy files and set the account up. There are computers where this does not happen, I'm doing research and return my HP back to Best Buy, it is unusable.

On Tuesday morning around 8:15 I got a little dialog box that stated (as close as I can recall) that Windows had encountered a critical problem and would restart in one minute, and that I should save my work. When I clicked my start button I saw that the restart option was grayed out, so I just had to sit there and wait for the restart to happen. Once it did and the computer was back, everything seemed normal. I looked in the Event Viewer and the nearest thing I could find to a cause was something about lsass.exe having stopped working. Also, later I noticed in the Windows update control panel that Windows Defender had updated itself at 8 AM that morning (at least according to my OS).

Relevant details: Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit- I was running Firefox, iTunes and Steam at the time. My antivirus program is avast! free version. Everything is updated. My version of Java was one revision out of date (7 update 4 instead of 5--since fixed). I use FoxIt Reader and not Adobe so that's not a vector. I ran a full Malwarebytes scan and found nothing. Also ran TDSSkiller.exe and found no problems.

There has been no strange behavior since the forced reboot, and there were Windows updates installed yesterday, and everything seems to be behaving properly, but on another forum I frequent someone said this might be a rootkit, so I'm paranoid. Is there something I can do to be sure?

Running uTorrent, you are high-risk for infection. If it wasn't the e-mail, it would have been something else, eventually.

Those are two of the malware. There's probably more. You can always assume that the only executables running from temporary and documents folders are malware.

I have been having problems for about 3 weeks now. BSOD's, critical error shutdowns, unable to startup problems.

The startup repair usually fixes startup by restoring back to a time when the computer was properly configured. Then it works for awhile and then more problems.

So far I have run a chkdsk \r (224 kb in bad sectors), run a memory diagnosis(supposedly fine), updated drivers with a driver updater, run a registry fixer, downloaded "BlueScreen Viewer"(nice program), ran Virus Scan(Avast, Malwarebyte Anti-Malware, Super Anti Spyware), and did allot of research.

Usually the crashes are supposedly due to IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, or memory management. The drivers are NTKNLPA.exe, hal.dll(usually one of these) but others are, Ntfs.sys, aswSP.SYS, nvstor 32.sys

Do not know what else to do.
I would appreciate any and all help!!!

Welcome
Looks like a memory problem. Take memtest 86 to be sure. Run for 8 passes. Then take each stick and test it in a good slot for 6 passes.

I was surfing the net with Firefox just after an update. When suddenly my laptop restarted and started a Startup Repair. I let it run but it still repeated so i tried to do a system restore, but that didn't work either, I even tried to run sfc /scannow which told me to restart my computer. Right now, I'm using my friend's computer looking for solutions when i came upon another thread on this site with the same issue. And feel that I might have the same problem.I read through the thread and followed it up to the getting a scan with the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool x64, but stopped their. Here's what I received:-----------Scan result of Farbars's Recovery Tool (FRST written by farbar) Version 2.1.1Ran by SYSTEM at 2011-06-25 00:09:17Running from G:\Windows 7 Home Premium (X64) OS Language: English(US) The current controlset is ControlSet001========================== Registry ==========================HKLM\...\Run: [AmIcoSinglun64] C:\Program Files (x86)\AmIcoSingLun\AmIcoSinglun64.exe [320000 2009-04-09] (AlcorMicro Co., Ltd.)HKLM\...\Run: [ETDWare] C:\Program Files\Elantech\ETDCtrl.exe [617856 2009-07-30] (ELAN Microelectronic Corp.)HKLM\...\Run: [AdobeAAMUpdater-1.0] "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\OOBE\PDApp\UWA\UpdaterStartupUtility.exe" [500208 2010-03-06] (Adobe Systems Incorporated)HKLM\...\Run: [IgfxTray] C:\Windows... About a year ago I installed a cyber sitter called "iProtectyou" on my son's computer. I decided to uninstall it for him recently because it didn't work, and it only seemed to give him a hassle when he tried to use the internet or play games. When I tried to reinstall it, it would not take the password I used (I could of forgotten it, but I had it written down).

After hours of trying to uninstall it, I went to the internet and Googled how to get rid of cyber sitter's with a forgotten password. Luckily there were several people with the same problem. I downloaded the applications they gave out on the site, and eventually got rid of it. They also had me go to the "Registry Editor" (run: regedit) and screw around in there. The program still shows up in "Programs and Features" but theirs no publisher now, and I still cannot install it. Except now, instead of asking for a password, it just says that their was an error with database.

Now when ever we open up anything, we are swarmed with windows telling us "Crictical Error Occured While Opening Database."

Any help would be great.

When I shut down, I get an "initialization failed" error message containing "USRprbdA.exe". It appears this is a US Robotics software problem. This problem started appox. 5 months ago. At that time I was running a Verizon DSL modem made by Westell and had been for sometime. I recently switched to a cable modem which is RCA.
Haven't run a US Robotics modem for appox. 1 1/2 years. I checked my Device Manager and found the modem listed "US Robotics 56K Voice Win Int". Checked the Add Remove Software area and found no obvious software. I'm not sure why the problem started suddenly. It's more a personal annoyance than a real problem, but how can I fix the problem?
I appreciate any help...Dave

The message only appears briefly and then the system shuts down/restarts/logs off as per the instruction. This is a family member's laptop. It is a Dell Inspirion N4110 running Win 7 Home Premium x64
They gave it to me complaining that the shutdown button restarts the computer and will not actually shut it down.
So I checked its preferences, they were fine. I went into the registry and changed the value from 1 to 0. That didn't work. (I changed it back)

I noticed on start up there is an error (it still pops up) that says there was a problem starting c:\users\blah\AppData\Roaming\homsp.dll The specified module could not be found.

The I decided to run a virus scan. Their McAfee had expired so I uninstalled it along with some odd software from a company called SysTweak or something and installed AVG and Malware Bytes. Those full scans came back clean except AVG found something and removed it but it wasn't of any significance to this issue.

I decided to check Windows Update, it wouldn't run. So I tried to restart it in Services and it wasn't there. After some piddling I found a program that supposedly fixed the problem for you. It was called Fix WU. I got it Softpedia. After running it the Windows Update service was back. I was able to install some updates and thought all was well. Then there were more updates. I tried to install them and got an error 80246008.

So I then realized BITS wasn't listed in the Services, either. I found a download (? [SOLUTION] Windows Update and BITS services missing) that contained reg files for Windows 7, installed it, ran the bits file and then res... Read more

I'm in no way a expert on such things but I did notice something you found.
SysTweak

Their is no way of knowing all the things a program like that has done. If I had to repair this computer I would start with a repair install.

Give this a good read.

Repair Install

Then I would install MSE for a anti virus and use the built in Windows Firewall.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/w...tials-download

Little note: If you didn't use McAfee's online removal tool their could of been left overs of McAfee on the computer when you installed AVG and that would be just more problems.
Any anti virus program you remove I recommend using their own removal tool found online.

"other people are logged on to this computer data maybe lost"
What could be causing this and how do I remedy it?

A:Recieving error message when trying to shutdown

Oooh you are a meanmom! Kidding

This message is primarily seen when other users haven't logged off their profile with a common, or shared PC. Since they didn't log off, whatever they have pending could potentially not be saved. (They're the bad guy.) If they can't save and log off, Meanmom can't be responsible. A few iterations of this works well; just tell them you didn't know better.

If you have a gateway configuration -- meaning you have 2 or more computers that share a connection, when you turn off your computer all others disconnect, you might see this message. This means you're the bad guy. They were transferring something and you shut them down cold. I toss the typical 5 minute warning "Hey!! You have 5 mins and that's it!!"

PS: If you have 1 PC and you're the only user, we can help with user accounts; just holler.

This is the first time my computer is having this problem. It randomly shuts down every 20-30 minutes or so. A screen comes on with a big "X" in a red circle that states "Please save your work as windows needs to shutdown. Windows must now restart because the DCOM Server Process Launcher service terminated unexpectedly."

It then says the shutdown was initiated by NT AUTHORITY/SYSTEM.

This is really annoying & frustrating as I'm constantly booted off my computer. It only gives you exactly 1:00 minute to save your work.

Can anyone tell how to fix this? I tried running a virus scan but it takes too long and it won't finish because my pc reboots before the scan is done.

Does this sound like an infection or could it be something else?

Thanks in advance for any advice or solutions.

What kind of anti virus software are you running? Norton, McAfee, AVG? Its possible this is a software and not a hardware problem.

For the third time in about three weeks Windows has had to shut down. The error message advises me to check for BIOS update with the hardware vendor and to disable caching and shadowing. (I checked with Dell and ran their automatic scans; they report all okay.) The details in the error message are:

Hello.

I'm not sure what nasty I have. In normal mode, I get three critical error messages like below with different file numbers.

---------------
Critical Error!
Windows was unable to save all the components for the file \System32\496A8300. The file is corrupted or unreadable. The error may be caused by a PC hardware problem.
-------------

I have a black screen, can run nothing, cannot access files, cannot connect to the internet.

In safe mode, I can get the files to display and can access a CD and external hard drive, but still cannot access the internet.

I used a laptop to transfer DeFogger, DDS, and GMER. I ran Defogger, obtained DDS logs, but twice GMER caused a stop screen error: RQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL and dumped the memory - had to reboot.

Previously, I had run rkill, TDSS, and MBAM. Once, the TDSS log indicated it had stopped C:\WINDOWS\system32\grpcon.exe - I believe it was the third time I ran it. Otherwise I get zero files terminated. I cannot run MBAM. I get run-time error '53' mbamnet. I tried using randmbam.exe, but was still unsuccessful after 10 attempts.

I get locked up in safe mode and have to turn off the computer and restart the whole process. This morning, I missed the safe mode tap and when starting up in normal, Spybot popped up and stated it had terminated a file called win32.zbot.

Thank you for any help you can give me. I'm stumped on this one. I've been working with it for two days now and can&#... Read more

While shutting down WinXP Pro SP2, at the very end of shutdown just before the fully powered down state, I get the following runtime error message:

-----------------------------------------+
Microsft Visual C++ Runtime Library |
-----------------------------------------+
Runtime Error!
C:\Windows\system32\svchost.exe

R6025
- Pure virtual function call
-----------------------------------------+
Anyone know if there is a list of likely causes for the above error message?

I recently began running the freeware IDS Prevx1R and suspect this may be the cause, but I'll have to uninstall it to know for sure. Anyone else have this problem running Prevx1R?

A:Error Message in Windows 2000 upon shutdown

I searched all over too, cant find what it belongs to. But u can force Windows to end task all apps when u hit shutdown by editing the registry.

go to Start>Run type regedit and hit ok.

Then navigate to HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop look for AutoEndTasks double click on it and change the value to 1 then reboot.

Recently, I installed Outlook Shutdown for my Outlook 2000 program and it works very well.

A minor problem has surfaced and it is that an error message pops up when I exit Outlook.

It is not causing any other problem and I just click "don't send" and it goes away.

I sent it to the author but could not copy the details from the Microsoft error message panel even though I could view them so he did not really get any helpful data from me other than that it was happening.

Anyone else had this problem and solved it?

PS; It is a good program that does what it is supposed to do and still worth installing even with this problem.

Did you get the add-in from here?

If it would help the author to have the full error message, when it shows use ALT+PrintScreen, then paste the screenshot into MSPaint & send him/her the bitmap.

Andy

There is an error message "behind" Windows that I see for a split second during shutdown. The Windows screen goes off and I see the message box with the large red "X" logo in the upper left corner, but it disappears so quickly when my laptop (ThinkPad T500) screen goes blank that I can't read the message. Is there some way to slow things down or interupt it long enough to read it? Thanks.

A:Error message disappears too fast during shutdown

check your event log.

start > run > eventvwr.msc > empty out both the system and app logs, and reboot and see what has populated there.

Every time I shut down or restart the computer I get a quick error message (so quick I can't read it) and the computer shuts down or restarts properly. I checked in the system error log and came up with this:

Application popup: dwwin.exe - DLL Initialization Failed : The application failed to initialize because the window
station is shutting down.

Also in the error log is this:

The Panasonic Digital Palmcorder service failed to start due to the following error:
The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.

I don't know if any of these have anything to do with this message I get but I thought I would give them to you anyway.

I am using Windows XP on a Sony Vaio RX560

I did contact Sony Tech support, but since the 90 days have passed, I would have to pay. I have also looked in the Microsoft Data Base but haven't found anything yet.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I have a software called USB safely remove. It starts up when windows 8.1 (64-bit) starts up. However I keep on getting the following message upon start up. Inspite of having just one account on my laptop which is admin. I keep getting this message (see attached image) upon every startup. I always run it and keep the checkbox disabled that says to always ask before opening such files.
What should I do to prevent this popup and let windows always grant the privilege to run this software upon startup?

I'm getting the following messages when I start up.

When I first start up it starts with this:

Then when I click on more info about the message I get the following:

After I click send or don't send this box comes up and shuts me down.

The problem is intermitent. If I restart enough times it eventually doesn't come up. But sometimes it takes 3 or 4 restarts to finally get the comp to fire up.

Thanks for any help. I appreciate.

I have a VOSTRO 1510 laptop from dell that I rarely use. I'm about to load some recording software and start using the laptop more often. Although the laptop seems to function perfectly, every time I shut down, right before the "Windows is shutting down" blue screen appears, an error message flashes and disappears before I can read it. Dell ran a diagnostic which showed nothing out of the ordinary. Nonetheless, Dell Support tells me that although we don't know what the error message is saying, something is probably wrong with the operating system and I should reinstall the XP SP3 operating system. I have never done this before and I'd like a second opinion. Thank you.

I reformatted my computer the other day, because of a trojan that I could not get rid of.  Since then, every few hours a dialogue box pops up, saying the DCOM server process service has terminated unexpectedly, then the computer restarts after a minnute or so.  I cannot find a fix for this, and believe my computer may still be infected.  I have run DDS and GMER, and have attached the results.  Please help!

My computer recently started slowing down. Now when I attempt to turn off the computer, I get a message. The message is: End Program - SMAX4PNP

Then it appears to be trying to close the program. After that, I get another message saying: End Program - sprtcmd.exe

Again, it appears to be trying to close the program. However, it will say the program is not responding. I have to keep clicking "End Now" in order to get my system to turn off.

Can someone please help me? Thank you.
