WinXP Search Mechanism Stalls

Q: WinXP Search Mechanism Stalls

Hi Gang,

When I try to search my computer, any part of my computer, the search module seems to stall. That is, it doesn't appear to be doing anything for anywhere between 10-30 seconds. After this time the meter starts working and the word "searching" comes up on the search box.

There seems to be a long delay between the time I give the order to search, and the time the search command is actually executed.

What can I do to eliminate this delay?

I have WinXP Pro SP2

Windows XP MCE 2005 start up stalls at driver mpegport.sys. I got this once before and Windows fixed itself and everything was fine. Then I purchased a new MB and upon first boot up the system is back to this same startup issue and I can't install any drivers to get the new MB up. Anyone know the MS technical support article number related to this issue or have any suggestions? I've been to MS support and can never find a solution there. I've always found one only on the web.

Recently, using FF on my Vista Ultimate 32 bit computer, I notices popup ads from, when I visited a web page. The pop ups appeared if I left OR right clicked on a text area. The mouse pointer remained a pointer; had not changed to hand with extended index finger.

I verified that FF's popup blocker is / was on. I removed all exceptions & restarted the PC. Same problem. I viewed the page source, searched for zedo and found it related to java script.

I turned off Java, rebooted & the problem went away.

This did NOT occur using IE 7.

I stopped the popups by using the modified hosts file from Because the .bat procedure used by the mvps author to replace the hosts file failed in the past, I copied the contents of the modified hosts from & pasted the contents into my hosts file, rebooted & success occurred. I had re-enabled java in FF.

I hope this information is useful to anyone else who encounters the phenomenon.

Firefox's popup blocker does not block all popups, although it does its best. The best way to block ads and the rest of the popups would be to use the Firefox AdBlock Plus extension.

Also, Java is not the same thing as Javascript. They are completely different, and I'm assuming you disabled JavaScript, not Java. However, you don't want to completely disable JavaScript because almost every modern website uses it in some way or another. AdBlock Plus should block the ads, but you can also use NoScript to block all JavaScript on a per-site basis.

My Windows Mail program suddenly stopped sending and receiving messages. The following error message popped up: "Account: 'Windows Mail', Server: 'pop3, Server Response: ERR An authentication mechanism MUST be entered,' Port: 110, Secure (SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800ccc90, Error Number: 0x800ccc18"

I have tried to trouble shoot settings. Everything appears to be correct per my internet provider. My operating system is Vista; I have been using Windows Mail for several years with no problem. Nothing has changed with my computer re: recent updates or new programs.

What is an "authentication mechanism" and how do I set/respond to the error issue? Any available help would be greatly appreciated! (FYI I'm not a computer techie-type so simple-minded (referring to me of course!!!) direction would be especially appreciated! Thank you!!!

I have a HP Deskjet 3745 I've had for a year and it keeps getting locked up on the left side and says mechanism error cradle can't move. I can print a test page but when it gets to the bottom of the page thats when it gets locked up. I try to align it but Its printing sideways like the cradle is out of alignment but its screwed in tight plus the lines are overlapping each other like theres a problem with the ink. The ink has 75% left. I sold it and took it over there one day after work so it sat in my car so I think maybe the heat inside the car may have did something. The lady I sold it to just moved and I think they may have dropped it cause theres a black scuff mark on the corner but she said she didn't. I had to give her money back so now I'm left with a broken printer.

i just bought a new computer, and assembled it.
everything works great, except that whenever i unplug the computer and then plug it back, i cant turn it back on again for a while.
No lights, no response, like its not in the socket at all. only after a few minutes of being unplugged it lets me turn it on again.
It was very anooying when i assembled the system, and had to wait for a while between adding stuff.
It really pissed me off when i had a power failure in my house for a second, and couldn't use my computer for about 20 minutes later.
Is this a safety thing from enermax? if it is, is there a way i can get around it? or atleast minimize the wait time?
my system, if u think that it might be somthing else:
Processor: Intel core 2 duo E6400
Motherboard: Asus P5B
Mem: DDR2 512Mb 533MHz CL2 Kingston
Graphics: Sapphire Radeon X1950PRO 256MB PCIe

I've got the 475W Noisetaker and a 480W Noisetaker II, never had this problem with either of them. I did static discharge on the case of the comp that had the Noisetaker in it once and it wouldn't power on for a few minutes, but I've never had a problem like you are discribing.

I may be off on those wattages, I can't be arsed to check for sure right now. But I'm not off by more than 15, and its not even relavent to your case.

Recently, the eject button on my dvd drive stopped working. I took off the faceplate and noticed the pin that would push the eject button on the drive was bent, and pushing the button on the drive still caused the drive to eject. So I'm pretty sure it's a problem with the faceplate only.

Does anyone know where I could find a new one? I have a HP dv6000 series (dv6568se)

Good morning.
I'm a third year university student and for one of my assignments, I am to write a research report based on the question 'Are Passwords an Effective Security Mechanism'. I have focused the research on biometric and traditional (alphanumeric combination) passwords. Also, I am required to obtain some primary research which can be argued against my secondary research to form some sort of conclusion, and to do this, I have decided that a questionnaire is the perfect solution.
I would appreciate it if some of you would take the opportunity to complete my questionnaire as you will be helping me out a lot. It will take no more than 2 minutes to complete. Also, I would be interested in hearing your thoughts and opinions on biometric and traditional passwords, regarding their security.
The survey can be found here -
I apologise if this is in the wrong section or breaks a rule. I have checked the rules out and I believe it doesn't break the advertising rule, but it might to you guys.
Thanks in advance.

A:Are Passwords an Effective Security Mechanism

The user is the first and last line of defense. Strong passwords can be effective security measure. Unfortunately, it has been proven time and again that the user is a more substantial factor (weakest link) in security than the architecture of the operating system or installed protection software. Security is all about layers, and not depending on any one technology or approach to detect or save you from the latest threats. The most important layer in that security defense? You! Most threats succeed because they take advantage of human weaknesses (laziness, apathy, ignorance, etc.), and less because of their sophistication.Krebs on SecurityThese were the worst passwords of 2015, and they're only getting worseThis List Of 2014s Worst Passwords, Including 123456, Is EmbarrassingIts 2014 And Our Passwords Arent Getting BetterThe 25 Worst Passwords of 2013

Hi Team,
May I know how does windows time works?
During system boot up, after BIOS transfers the ownership to windows, does windows get the time value from CMOS RTC?
After that, how does windows time tick-tock? using PCH's HPET(High Precision Event Timer) or CPU's TSC(Time Stamp Counter)?
Does any interrupt or events will cause windows time pause? such as SMI?
Any documents from windows to explain this mechanism.
If I have to debug an issue relative with windows time, any way to monitor this time during system boot up?
it is a data structure or run time register reading or something else?

Is there any built in mechanism in Windows 7 during the fresh installation that all files are copied successfully from DVD to hard drive? or as long as Windows 7 completes the installation no matter how fast/slow it takes, one can assumed that all files are copied successfully?

Mine took about 25 mins, but during the installation lots of long pauses while reading/copying files from my 4X DVR+RW to hard drive as if Windows couldn't find files or constantly waiting from the rewritable 4X DVR+RW), but it eventually competed the installation in 25 mins none the less without giving out any error messages.

I've been getting a message from 'startup mechanic' to advise me that program 'uuespo' (c:windows/system32/uuespo.exe) is attempting to run at system startup. I checked the description and it's meant to be a nuisance program that changes your IE homepage so I disabled it and deleted the file from the above path. Then I started having problems with the windows search function, when I right click 'start' and 'search' nothing happens, the same with left click 'start' 'search'. If I right click a folder in windows explorer and select 'search' nothing happens, but I can open windows explorer, then select search!!!! but this only allows me to search the whole drive. So in my haste I deleted 'uuespo.exe' from the recycle bin. The program still seems to be install somewhere tho and startup mechanic is still flashing up messages telling me it's trying to register at startup. I'm also having problems within Internet explorer since this all started, in that it won't open pop-up screens from trusted sites. I've been through the Microsoft pages and disabled pop-up blocker on IE and on Norton anti virus, but to no avail. I was at the latest release of the operating system, but have just reverted to service pack 1 to try and resolve the issue, again no joy. I am sure this has become a common plea for help on this forum: for the past month my internet searches (on any search engine, be it google or bing or yahoo) are redirected when I click on a link that I am interested in. I also get random windows popping up with random websites (not just when I click on a link.. it happens even as I am on this website typing this msg for example).

I have updated and then run McAfee Security Center as well as Ad-Aware and MalwareBytes AntiMalware, but the problem persists. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also wondering if this is just a pain in the *** type of infection or if there is any potential for information loss (risk of identity theft). Since this infection is a marker of system vulnerbility, how do I check for keyloggers, backdoor trojans etc on my system (do I need to reformat/re-install)?

I have Macfee security suite installed (w/ antivirus and firewall), also have ZE (free version) firewall, and now aw-aware. Am behind a NAT wireless router (w/ SPI). The router is new, as is ad-aware (both were added after the infection, unfortunately).

Btw I think its awesome that this community exists....thanks again.

The logs from hijackthis and antimalware are attached. Can attach updated logs as well if needed (depending on how long it takes to get a reply... info may be outdated).

This has happened to me numerous times, and I'm wondering if anyone else has noticed it.

Try this...
From the START button, click on "Search"
Click on "pictures, music, or video"
Click on "Music", and type "ABC" in the box titled "All of part of the file name".
Click on "use advanced options"
Now look what happened! It took the file name you were searching for ("ABC"), and placed it in the box titled "a word or phrase in the file"! (At least this happens to me.)

Searching this way - by contents rather than name - takes much, much longer, and is clearly NOT the method I chose.

Does this happen to everyone - or is something wrong with my install?

Thanks in advance!

A:WinXP Home Search Problem

There is a way to reinstall the search utility, but the exact source for restoring files may depend on your Window version. If you have never updated you can use your Windows CD if you have one or c:\I386.

If you have updated to a service pack there is an I386 cabinet folder which I think should be used instead:

Once you've sorted that out you can try these directions:

Search - Doesn't Work

Open Explorer and go to the Windows\Inf folder. Locate the srchasst.inf file. Right click it and select Install. You'll need your XP CD or the files from the I386 folder. (This fix will require you to have your Win XP CD).

The Windows\Inf folder is a hidden folder. You can adjust your Explorer Folder Options (View tab) to Show hidden files and folders. You can also click Start, Run and enter %SystemRoot%\Inf to open directly to the Inf folder.Click to expand...

A:WinXP IE8 search results are redirected

I would like all involved for the work you've done so far. I believe I have removed the rootkit (TDL3) causing my search result redirects. I failed to mention a critical bit of information. A few weeks ago a Microsoft patch caused this machine to BSD. The BSD appeared almost immediately after posting and I was sure it was hardware at first. However, it turned out I was able to use Microsoft ERD Commander to roll back and I isolated the bad update. Microsoft later pulled the update and I figured that was that. The only indication I had of anything being screwy was the search results (only from the IE8 toolbar) being redirected. After running GMER and finding: CODEC:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\atapi.sys - suspicious modificationI remembered reading that this file was modified as well as the Windows NT kernel by the patch and was able to focus my search accordingly. It turns out the rootkit caused the problem but the update was pulled because the rootkit was so widespread. More info here: Here Again thank you for your time.

Hello all, this will be my first post here so go easy on
I'm having a problem with several functions in WinXP.
First and foremost, my search function won't operate. I can get into it and type in what I'm looking for in the "all files & folders" field but when I click on "search" after a few seconds (I have task mgr up to see how long it takes) in the task manager 2 separate applications show up and both of them say "not responding". I have to click end program on one, and they both go away. I tried a system restore, but naturally I didn't know enough when I got the computer to know I needed to set up regular restore points so it didn't work. I've tried everything from cleaning out my registry with Regcleaner to running spybot S&D and Adaware 6.0 to disabling some of the junk that's running in the background with msconfig. I'm kinda at my wits end here, so any help would be GREATLY appreciated.
Another problem I've had for a while is that when I click on "restart", the computer tries to shut down and gets all the way to the "saving your settings" screen and then locks up. The only way for me to get it to restart is to turn it off at the power switch and then turn it back on. This is annoying but I can live with it if it's not potentially dangerous to my computer with all the turning it on and off. Thanks in advance for any help.

My brother's laptop is a Toshiba w/ a 2.8GHz P4 and 512MB RAM running WinXp. I installed an old version of Download Accelerator Plus and it seemed to be working fine. Then he started complaining that he couldn't download files from websites or P2P programs -- it just gives an error that DAP couldn't be loaded. So I checked it out and his computer got infected w/ Search Extender and Home Shopping Assistant. I found instructions online and spent most of the day yesterday cleaning it up, and I'm pretty sure that I got rid of Search Extender and HSA. But I was still having the same problems w/ DAP. Apparently he uninstalled DAP, so I reinstalled it and noticed the GUI was different. It was also hijacking the browser -- in the past, I could always turn it on and off when I wanted, control what filetypes it downloads, etc. But now it's activated any time I tried to download anything. It also asked me if I wanted to update it, which it never did in the past. So I think he updated it and the newer version is much more of a malware program than the old version was.

So I found instructions here:here to remove DAP. They're pretty long and involve a lot of regedit. I cleaned everything up according to the instructions, and while I was in there, I noticed that were some remaining Search Extender entries that contained DAP entries. So that got me thinking... is it possible that Search Extender/HSA hijacked DAP and changed it?

Hello -
About two weeks ago my Avira scanner detected a virus in a dll file and quarantined it. The original location was:
C:\Documents and Settings\(MyName)\Application Data\cpcts.dll

From then on, at bootup I would receive a rundll32 error loading that dll, saying that "the specified module could not be found". I went into msconfig and found that "cpcts" was one of the startup processes, so I disabled that and the errors no longer appeared - but I was aware this was a quick and dirty solution and the problem was still there - if possible my preference is to permanently correct that problem.

But around this same time - I can't be sure if it was after the quarantine or not, so I'm not entirely sure the two issues are related - I started to get google search redirects (as in, upon clicking a link in the results, I'd be taken to some other loosely-related website instead - and sometimes I'd have to go back to the google results multiple times before the actual link would go through). This confirmed I still had some sort of adware or infection - but I ran an Avira scan of all drives and it found nothing, and then (after temporarily disabling Avira) a FULL scan in MBAM and that found nothing either. Within the last two days the problem has progressed to opening new tabs containing ads at random, and I'm not sure what to do to get rid of the problems. My email client, desktop program PostBox (for Win) has been slowed since I installed BD TS2016 (I'm quite sure this is the reason as it was very fast before, and slowed immediately after...)

I also run WebRoot AV (which does not scan email as per their documentation) and HitmanAlertPro (which could also be affecting my email client, but I uninstalled it to test this somewhat small chance given its just an anti-exploit, and it doesn't seem to have affected it, the client is still slow).

1. I would LIKE BD to scan my email as of course having AV w/o scanning email could in many ways be pointless given email can be a deadly vector for heavy malware.

2. But I don't want my client to be slow. It's not horrible, and I suppose I could tolerate it (basically deleting messages, loading new messages, and the program responsiveness overall, is a bit sluggish compared with its normal instantaneous response)

3. Is there a way to configure email scanning differently? Or should the program NOT be slowing my client noticeably in general, and is this behavior indicative of something being wrong?

I'm sure BD users will be able to comment on whether it slows their email or not given they use a desktop client like Outlook, Postbox, Thunderbird, etc.

A:BitDefender Email Scanning Mechanism? Performance Issues w/ email Client

In the past I used BD TS exclusively with OutLook as my e-mail client and had no such issues, have you tried, or open to try switching clients to see if it's something about Postbox that BD TS disagrees with ?
do let us know what you discover either way.

Hello all,

I have a very old computer currently, and I'm going to get a new computer. My current computer is VERY fragile - as an example, about two years ago I added an additional stick of ram, and this somehow caused my winxp install to become corrupt, and I lost everything on my hard drive. I still have no back up of my files that are on the computer now.

In getting the new computer, It will have at least one extra hard drive that will be used to store backups.

Basically, I want to be able to transfer all my files from the old computer over to the new computer. The old one uses Winxp Home, and the new one will have Winxp Pro. (no, not Vista. Repeat - no Vista)

Will I just be able to plug in the new computer to my Linksys router that the old comp is connected to, and transfer over all the files from my old comp to store as a backup on my new comp? (and, what kind of things would I need to do to make this happen?) (my current computer is connected to the router for internet through the ethernet port, and the new comp would do the same thing)

I'm somewhat computer literate, but have NEVER networked anything together. Thanks!

A:Transfering files between 2 computers - WinXP Home to WinXP Pro

Here's a wizard way to enable file and printer sharing on XP machines.

Run the Network Setup wizard (found in Control Panel of XP). Tell it each of your computers connects to the internet via "residential gateway" and that you want to enable file and printer sharing. Create a disk at the end only if you have a Windows PC other than XP or 2k Pro or Vista.

Windows XP firewall (if SP2 or SP3) will be properly configured by the wizard. You must uninstall or properly configure any 3rd party firewalls on each machine. Unique computer names and same workgroup, of course.

The Shared Documents folder is automatically shared. Any other folders (or drives) or printers you want to share, just right click on them and sharing ... . When sharing a printer, accept the offer to load other drivers if your other PCs have different Operating System(s).

When you first go into My Network Places there will be nothing there. The first time you click on 'View Workgroup computers' will probably result in great disappointment. It takes awhile (up to 15 minutes) before all the computers in the workgroup get up-to-date and accurate lists of the other computers. Often you can speed up this process via Search for other computers.

When computers show up in My Network Places, double click on one to see its shares. If that includes a printer, you can right click on the printer to connect to it.

I recently built a system (not exactly state-of-the-art) to replace the aging box I had been using for a few years. I got a mobo that would support a SATA hard drive so I could enjoy the faster access and high volume. I bought a 160Gb SATA drive and got a sealed OEM version of XP Pro from the internet. I put it all together and loaded the OS, activated it online and loaded up all the updates. I slaved the old hard drive and transferred all my data to the new drive and life was good for a couple of weeks. Three nights ago, I was at the computer and got the proverbial BSOD (blue screen of death). I shut down and attempted to least 10 times with every joy.

Enough's the problem:

I have a legal copy of WinXP on a HD that won't load Windows and is slaved as a data-only drive. My emergency 60Gb backup drive (new master) has a copy of WinXP that is of "questionable origin" and that has never been activated officially that I got from a guy at work.
I want to "legalize" the current XP installation by booting from the legal XP CD and repairing the installation from the menu........Can I do this without losing data?? Or, is there a better way to get legal?

Hello and welcome to Techspot.

First go into Bios and find the boot menu make sure it is set to boot from Floppy first(if you have a floppy drive) then your cd rom then your Hard drive.

Put your windows Cd in your cd drive and save and exit from Bios.

1. Start your computer from the Windows XP CD-ROM. To do this, insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into your CD drive or DVD drive, and then restart your computer.
2. When you see the "Press any key to boot from CD" message, press any key to start the computer from the Windows XP CD-ROM.
3. At the Welcome to Setup screen, press ENTER to start Windows XP Setup.
4. Read the End-User License Agreement, and then press F8.
5. Follow the instructions on the screen to select and format a partition where you want to install Windows XP.
6. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete Windows XP Setup.

Please note that during setup your computer will reboot. When it does you will be asked to press any key to boot from cd DO NOT press anything otherwise it will just start the setup again from scratch.

I've been trying to figure out a problem that I've been having for the past week or longer. When I have firefox open as it seems, is when the problem arises. My computer will stall for 10-20 seconds making it completely unusable for that time frame, then it will come back. I upgraded FireFox to 15 (Beta2) I removed Adobe Flash (latest version) and installed it again, the problem continues. I did a memory test, because I have had a BSOD roughly twice in the past 1.5 weeks, the memory results were good. I did research on Adobe Flash and found that there are problems with the latest version, and sometimes a Adobe Flash app on a web site will crash. When I've had no web pages open in FireFox, it will happen as well ? I can't verify if I've had this problem when FireFox is closed or not as there wasn't many times in which I didn't have FireFox open whether minimized or the window open.

A:10-25 second PC Stalls

Not sure if this is helpful or relevent

But there is a problem with the current beta as well 15(beta4)....this has been ongoing from the previous beta's ... Also which version of flash are you using.

The best way to find out is by using process monitor

You could also try disabling hardware acceleration as well for firefox... this is know to cause hangs in some cases.

Having a major problem. Re-built a PC for someone:
*new*ECS M400 board
*new*512mb DDR
Kyro II 64mb vid-card
Western Digital 40gb HD
Lite-On DVD burner
32X CD-Rom
56k modem
AC97 onboard sound
1ghz Athlon

Went to boot up just to make sure everything worked and it would get to the XP slpash screen (with the blue staus bar). As soon as it tried to initialize the desktop/log-on screen it would shut down immediatley.

Booted from the WinXP cd to do a new install. Made it to the "ready to install" screen (options to press ENTER oto install, repair etc..). It dies immediatley if you press enter.

Removed the HD and placed it in another PC and did a quick format. Placed back into case, tried to install from the CD again...same result.

Apparently the boot sector on the HD remains as when I tried to boot up it said something to the effect of "NTDLSR.??? not found ctrl+alt+del to restart"

After all this I discovered that it (previous XP install) may have been infected with a form of the sasser virus (lsasse.exe errors). So do I need to do a full format, and could this be causing the shutdowns whenever it tried to boot originally and now when it tries to access the HD to do a fresh install?

Whew!! That was a mouthful!!

Thanks in advance for any help!

Hello - I'm hoping someone can help me here...

(For info I'm running Windows XP SP2)

Problem 1) I've recently discovered that I hae Pipas.a virus which I can't seem to remove. I regularly run Spybot S&D and SE Adaware, also run Macafee Firewall and Virusscan and generally keep the PC spyware free. How can I go about removing Pipas.a?

Problem 2) Real player doesn't seem to want to stream anything anymore, saying 'Cannot detect Winsock - please remove old internet software and start again' - WMP streams OK but not Real Player. I've tried the 'netsh reset winsock cataogue' but the problem comes back, particularly when Mcafee tries to update and says the winsock is incorrect and attempts to load one for Windows 95!!

Problem 3) When trying to use the guided help on the Microsoft website to correct the Winsock error I get 'TCP/IP setting is incorrect'

Can anyone help - I'm tearing my hair out here!! Recently had a couple of viruses picked up and removed by Mcafee, also a couple removed by Spybot and when this happened it seems like I lost my previous System restore points...

Any help would be fantastic!

I'm having a heck of a time getting three systems to network consistently.

Previously I had a WinXP Pro desktop cabled to a Win2k Pro laptop and was able to get them to see each other over the connection but was never able to get the laptop to share the desktops internet connection, (DSL).

I've installed a wireless network and added another laptop running WinXP Home. All three systems can see the internet connection on the router.

None of these systems can see each other on the network. I get a message saying MSHOME is not accessible.

I don't believe there are any technical problems here, (although I will stand corrected if need be), just my lack of understanding of how networking these OS's works.

I need a good tutorial on networking that covers this mix of OS's. Can anyone help direct me to such a site?

Thanks ...weeG

The error message i receive is...

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt.
<Windows root> \system32\hal.dll
please re-install a copy of the above file

A:Loaded winxp pro onto different hdd now can't load winxp home on different hdd

Welcome to TSG!

So if I'm following, you took a hard drive from your friend's PC, installed it into your PC running XP Home as a 2nd drive, then installed XP Pro onto this drive.
Your friend's system won't boot, and your system offers the choice of XP Home and XP Pro. XP Home should still work, but XP Pro will fail if your friend's drive is not installed in your PC, correct?

Assuming your system had only one partition and one drive.
The files that start the OS are on your C drive, they were not installed onto your friend's hard drive.
This can be fixed, but XP Pro will see itself as being on drive D, not drive C
If the hardware is different, you'll need to do a repair install to get it to work though. Easier to just start over.
Your system should still boot to XP Home, but will have the choice for XP Pro. This just needs to be removed from the boot.ini file.
You best bet is to start over and do the XP Pro install with the drive installed in your friend's PC
To remove the XP Pro entry from your system (with your friend's drive NOT installed):
Click Start | Run, type msconfig, press Enter
Click the BOOT.INI tab
Click the Check All Boot Paths button
It should find the XP Pro line as invalid, and offer to remove it.
Click Yes.

When I try to open websites from shortcuts stored on my desktop or in folders my IE browser stalls with just part of the browser window painted. It usually stops at the frame.

The shortcuts work if my browser is already open and open in a new tab.

Since my homepage has several tabs it takes awhile to open and I want to not have to open the browser first everytime I go to one of these sites. It seems to happen with any shortcut to a website. shortcuts to files work fine.

This has been happening I think since I got the computer. Initially if I kept trying or right clicked and clicked OPEN it would work. No wthey never open on their own.

Also, are you fully up to date with your XP patches? You should be at SP3. Check Microsoft's site for free downloads if you're not.

I have not been able to download and install MS security updates for several weeks after never
having this problem for years previously. What is happening is the process stalls at the place
where it is, "Checking for the latest updates for your computer." I am only behind four or five small
downloads, so the process should not take too long and never has before. I have let it run for a half
hour with no success. The progress bar shows no activity either.

Your advice will be much appreciated. {redoak}

This laptop has become almost unusable. Most of the time recently it runs extremely slowly - programs take a very long time to launch, ctrl-alt-delete either goes extremely slowly or it just fails with an error message - and one time after a restart it went into a diagnostic mode.

This laptop is very new -- about a month old. I haven't installed much at all on it, really just Rosetta Stone language software.

It has plenty of RAM, and I've run the HP Support Assistant to do some tuning up - deleting temp files, cleaning out browser cache, etc., but none of this has helped.

Thank you very much in advance!

I'm using VIDEOzilla v3.1 and am trying to convert a 225MB .avi file to .mov but the process hangs at around the 50% mark and proceeds no further. There are no errors, CPU usage initially hits 97% but drops to 50% after about 5 mins.

I have Windows XP w/SP3. No updates have been installed since the installation of VIDEOzilla (that I am aware of).

Has anyone got any ideas on this? Has anyone else experienced this error? I am using the unactivated version (free download). Is the size of the .avi the problem? I had previously used AVS Video Converter to convert the same file into .mov but it placed their logo in the middle of the screen as it too was an unactivated version (and costs twice as much as VIDEOzilla).

Thanks and kind regards,

What is the goal for this file?

If its going to an iPod you could use Handbrake. If it just needs to be converted for something else you could try Super. Personally I dislike Super because it seems like you need to jump through hoops to use it, and in the past (don't know about current version) the GUI is horrible, but it does seem to work well.

I am in the process of upgrading a computer with a new motherboard, ram and processor. I originally installed everything on the board, started up the computer and nothing. I first realized I had not installed a heat sink and fan, purchased one and installed it. still wouldn't start. I contacted ASUS and they informed me to get a larger power supply (was using 235W supply originally). Purchased a 400W supply and I still get the same results. I currently test the motherboard and chip by leaving it out of the case, plugging only the power supply, case and heat sink/fan. When I hit the on button the fans start up and then just stop.

Computer Specs - Chip AMD 2200XP, 526 ram, 400W supply. new case fan, existing drives/hard drives (2)

I have tried it with the Ram installed and I still get the same thing. I have looked at other problems listed before and I will try some of these but need help right away!!!!

My DVD drive is stalling when trying to play a DVD. The DVD works fine on a different computer. It will play for a few seconds and stall. Sometimes it fails to start altogether. I have deleted the "UpperFilters" and "LowerFilters" in the registry. I have cleaned the DVD drive. I have tried different player applications. When I replaced the DVD drive with a different DVD drive known to be good, I get a "boot device not found" error message from the BIOS when I start my computer. This DVD drive does work on a different computer. When I re-install my original DVD drive, I have no problem booting but the original problem remains. Any ideas as to why the original DVD drive stalls? Also, any ideas why installing a different DVD drive disables ALL boot devices?

For the past week or so when I run HJT, the scan proceeds up to a point and then stalls for a period of about 45 seconds. The stall point is always the same; the progress bar is within a 1/2 inch of completion and the accompanying text says :"015 Trusted Zone Enumeration". After the delay it completes the scan. There are no 015 entries in the final scan report.

During the stall my mouse is dead, the arrow can be moved about (no hour glass) but I cannot scroll the HJT contents, I cannot exit HJT. This stalling was such an unusual occurance that it made me feel I had problems and after about 15 seconds I would bail-out with the 3 finger salute. It was only by accident the I discovered that 45 seconds of patience was all that was required.

A co-incidental event,which only happened once a few days ago;
One morning I ran HJT and immediately a message popped up which stated in essence; "HJT is already running". Closing that message box, and making repeated attempts continued to generate that message. A re-boot solved that, it hasn't happened since. I mention it only because it may be related to the stalling. I won't classify this situation as a problem, merely unusual behavior which has grabbed my attention. Therefore you can assign to this communique whatever level of importance that it deserves.

One point though about which I am curious and if some one would give me an answer, it would be appreciated. How do I access this list or file of "Trus... Read more

Hi guys,

I m new here and i got some problems with my pc. It s a 9 year old HP Compaq, dual core 2.4, new hdd, 2 gb ram.
Yes, I know it s tooo okd but at the moment i don t have the money for a jew one. Just about 3 weeks my laptop kicked the bucket, that s why i turned back to this old crap.
It worked fine for a couple of days but now it freezes when playing videos. Just stops, sometime s i can move the mouse pointer sometimes not and sometimes a strange noise comes from the PC case.
When not playing videos it actually works preety good but the thing is i need to watch some video tutorials right now because i m working on my bachelor thesis.

So what i m asking is this: do you have any idea where that sound could come from, or why does it even freeze and the most important question of all, is my life in danger? Can a bad PSU for example electricute the whole case or something?
Oh and btw. I firmly believe it s a hardware problem because the same thing happened with xp and lubuntu.

Thank You for any replies!

A:PC freezes (stalls).

Download CPUZ and see what temperatures it reads; solving this problem could be as easy as taking the back off and cleaning the fluff out (doing that wouldn't hurt anyway).

If it runs cool enough, well, video compression is far more sophisticated now than it was 9 years ago, what was high-end then will likely struggle with today's codec demands.

Hi Don,

Welcome to TSG!

Try full scanning in Safe Mode, and unschedule full scanning while your system is fully booted up. Then after scanning in Safe Mode, do a full boot up and just let the real-time scanner and firewall protect you.

In Safe Mode, there is less software that is booted, and then just PC-cillin is running.

Norton System Works is sometimes the culprit in shutdown issues . . If you have it, try disableing it in msconfig startup and see if that makes a difference . .

If you do not have NSW, disconnect from theinternet, disable everything in msconfig startup and add back one at a time to see who the offender is.

Start . . Run . . type msconfig . . click on Startup tab to see what is starting up automatically

A:Combofix stalls

Hello Yourhyness and welcome to BC.As a general policy, Bleeping Computer does not offer advice on how to run ComboFix unless we asked someone to run it or if there is a problem with the computer caused by running the tool. This is because people should not be using ComboFix without being advised to do so by a trained expert (see here) who is assisting a member deal a malware issue on that system. When issues arise due to complex malware infections, possible false detections, problems running ComboFix (i.e. stalling, hanging, crashing) or with other security tools causing conflicts, experts are usually aware of them and can advise what should or should not be done while providing individual assistance. When false detections are identified, experts have access to the developer and can report them so he can investigate, confirm and make corrections. Those attempting to use ComboFix on their own do not have such information and are at risk when running the tool in an unsupervised environment.CombFix's disclaimer clearly says it is permitted for non-commerical purposes only and should not be used in an unsupervised environment. The developer did not intend for his tool to be used any other way and it certainly was not intended for those running a computer repair business or for use in a business/corporate environment. With that said, there are circumstances ComboFix will hang, crash or stall at various stages due to malware interference, failure to disable other real-time pro... Read more

JRT seems to be taking a very long time to complete. Moreover, it seems to stall at a specific stage during its processing. Is this an error, or is the program simply requiring a long time to complete? Does my laptop have an infection?
I have run JRT several instances before over the past few months. Each time, JRT only took about ten minutes to complete. Today, I decided to run JRT because I run my other anti-virus, anti-malware, etc. programs  weekly. So, when I opened JRT today, it prompted me to update to the latest version. I delete the old/current version and downloaded the new one. Subsequently, I turned off MSE real-time protection, then opened and clicked to run JRT. After doing so, JRT proceeds and advances after the first several steps, but then it seems to stall at "Checking Processes." The first time I tried to run it today, it was taking well over half an hour. So, I exited out and attempted to delete, reinstall, and rerun it. My laptop is currently running JRT. It is still taking forever to advance past "Checking Processes."
Over the past few days, I have run MBAM, MBAR, MSE, AdwCleaner, and SAS. They have found nothing. So, I find it strange that JRT is taking atypically longer to complete when it has only required ten minutes or so in the past and that my other anti-virus, anti-spyware, anti-malware programs have found no infections lately.
Can someone please shed some light on this? Am I just not waiting long enough for JRT to compl... Read more

A:Possible Infection: JRT stalls?

What version of JRT are you using? thisisu frequently updates JRT...the most current version (6.1.1) was released a few days ago. There have been a few reported instances to the developer where JRT would not run properly. Sometimes there isn't a clear explanation as to why without the developer having access to more specific information. Try running it in Safe Mode.BTW, I doubt you have an infection. JRT was created to remove many potentially unwanted programs (PUPs), adware, toolbars, browser hijackers, extensions, add-ons, browser helper objects (BHOs) and other junkware. The tool is designed to remove all traces of these types of programs which includes services, registry values, registry keys, files, and folders. The tool will also restore some default settings for Internet Explorer, Mozilla FireFox and Google Chrome (somewhat supported). It can delete any potentially unwanted extensions from Extension folders and registry. These programs do not fall in the same category as malicious files such as viruses, Trojans, worms, rootkits and bots.

A day or two ago, Windows began stalling on the load up screen (the one with the blue loading bar under the windows logo). I've tried using System Restore but the problem hasn't stopped. Earlier today it took roughly 3 reboots to get into Windows, but it seems to be taking more now, and so I have now used Safe Mode instead.

A few days ago I was trying to solve a problem with my microphone and updated some NVidia drivers. I also updated my bluetooth drivers, but that was days before the problem started to occur.

I have recently found SpywareNo with AdAware but am not sure whether this might be related.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your help in advance.

The problem w/ my new system is that it kinda stalls/freezes every 2 to 3 minutes for a least 10 seconds at a time where nothing happens and then the web page pops up.
I'm thinking it can only be the modem's fault. what else since like I said I've been using the same phone line, tel# and ISP for over 2yrs now.
I'm thinking of buying a US Robotics modem.

I found this closed thread and would like to make an addendum that some may find helpful.

Download stops working in Windows7, Internet Download Manager, Everywhere

The posting agent that figured this out ..... freaking awesome...
However, I discovered, at least with Zonealarm that the error was caused by me turning on Address Resolution Protocol Protection under the advanced settings. Turning this off again solved the problem.

I would have not figured this out as quickly as I did had it not been for the previous thread. But the actions the posting agent suggested may not be necessary in all instances.

I would suggest disabling ARP Protection first. Many firewalls have similar defenses. Though I'm not familiar with how to check such settings for all such firewalls.

If my suggestion fails you I'm quite certain the aforementioned post will help you find your own resolution. The solution/explanation starts as posts by jcgriff2.

A:Download Stalls

Hi -

Thank you for the kind words.

Have you experienced any other system issues since installing Zone Alarm?

I ask because others have -

As you saw in the thread you referenced, Zone Alarm is not alone; 3rd party firewalls in general do not get along very well with Vista & Windows 7 as they did with XP.

I am glad to hear of your specific system resolution.

Currently all on-line functions are dead slow or stall. For example, I downloaded a free on-line scan for malware from Housecall and it just stuck at 99 per cent and continued running that way for over an hour. It didn't freeze as I was able to hit 'cancel' ok. My problem is whenever the pc is running, and on any program it will out of the blue suddenly stall and i have to shut down the whole pc to start it running again.
We have had the pc 6 months and it is still under warranty for parts on the pc, but im not sure if this problem is software or hardware, and if i should be reinstalling the pc all togethor.
I have done scans, degrags, run spybot and run a registry mechanic and also run the internet security program that was installed in the pc when we had it built. I have also checked out the idea of a virus in the pc, but im also unsure if any viruses are still remaining in the pc after doing scans and checks.

A:Help, pc stalls and hangs anytime

Greetings a6seiis, Welcome to TSF!

Over a period of six months, your PC has probably accumulated a pile of 'garbage' temporary files that have not been removed.

Windows? does have a few good built-in 'garbage cleaners', so please try them...

1: Right click > Internet Explorer Desktop Icon > Properties > Delete cookies > OK > Delete Files > Tick the box > Delete all offline content > OK click the Content Tab > Clear SSL State > OK .

2: How to use the Windows? XP Disk CleanUp tool. ( Click the coloured link. )

These two utilities will help keep the HDD 'clean'...use them both regularly, as well as using The Disk Defragmenter once a week.
Both of them will only delete the unnecessary 'garbage', whereas other system cleaners can remove vital files.
I have got into the habit of using Method One every night as part of the shutdown process, and Method Two once a week.

3: Is your computer running slow? This article is also worth a good read.

4: Go Start > Run > type in the box msconfig > Enter.
This opens the System Configuration Utility > StartUp > list here are all the programs that are set to start with Windows?.
Untick those that you do not want to start with Windows > Apply > ok; the computer will want to reboot; allow it to do so.
If you are unsure which programs are safe to disable; post a list here and we will advise you.

Sorry if the subject is cryptic but its about the best way to explain the issues.

basically, sometimes l could be browsing and for no reason l get DNS errors with both firefox and IE, at these times my router also becomes inaccessible when it happens.

before ppl ask it has happened with two different wireless dongles (one branded Zoom and the current branded Tenda) furthermore when it originally started l assumed it to be the dongle which is why lm using the Tenda USB adapter, the strangest part being that when it originally started l was using a different setup, lve since done a rebuild and the only things that have stayed the same is my storage hard drives (everything else is different).

now you may point fingers at my router however lm not so sure thats the culprit because l also have a laptop which doesnt suffer these issues which also connects wirelessly and l have experienced this problem while using my laptop where my system just sort of stalls wireless traffic, you may ask about security software which l shall add is pretty much the same (l use bitdefender and peerblock the only addition being there maybe a few more lists added to the affected system tho disabling doesnt seem to help when the issue occurs).

all l can say is in addition to browser issues with browsing, sometimes my IRC client will disconnect from the chat server l run (its usually open all the time) so l guess the timeout periods dont always kick in when it happens and also skype will have trouble ... Read more

A:intermittent wireless stalls

If you plug your pc directly to the router do you still have problems? In either event, go back to wireless for the next questions...

Are your Zoom and Tendra dongles both old (pre-Windows 7)? What are the specific model numbers?

If you try pinging an ip address, do you note dropped packets?

If yes to the ping question, if you ping your router do you have any problems?

If you boot into safe mode with networking, do you have intermittent internet problems?

I've finally updated from Windows XP to Windows 7 SP1 64bit yesterday (with a new PC). For my entire life, Windows XP is the only OS I've used. So, I'm brand new to Windows 7 and hardly know anything about it.

I tried using windows update, but it just hangs and says "checking for updates".

I tried manually downloading several update files, but none of them have worked. I disabled firewall (because I thought maybe that was blocking the download?) and defender. I don't know what else to do and I really need help because I've become so frustrated.

Hi Fester,
from your screenshot The Firefox tab is showing activate is that for W7??
if so can you run this tool please, copy/paste the output.

Unfortunately MS is not treating W7 users as a priority at the moment and updating is rather SLOW, just let it run overnight.

Running XP with SP 3. On startup, the computer gets past the Windows XP screen and then stalls with a blank screen. HD stops being accessed after about a minute.

After manually powering down via power button and restarting the computer, the screen comes up asking how to start Windows. Selecting Safe Mode has the same problem...stalling during startup. The only option that works is the one that starts Windows with the last configuration known to work. After selecting this, the computer starts as normal, takes a moment to detect anything hooked up via USB, and it's good to go.

Ideas? Is this something funky with the registry? What is the next step?

Here I am once again, with another problem. I have 2 internal disks and 1 external disk.
1) OCZ-AGILITY3 60GB SSD disk with the windows installation
2 WDC WD20EZRX 2TB HDD with all the software and data.
3) WDC WD6400AAKS 640GB with media and data (external).

The last few days (especially when transfering files from one disk to the disk #2) windows that are currently open, or processes that are running, stop to respond and occasionally show up an error (varies from software to software) that mentions I/O device error. So I thought something is wrong with one of my disks. I ran WD lifeguard diagnostics and the windows check disk utilities. None showed any problems, bad sectors etc. So I'm getting cofused, if my disks are ok, what is causing this error? At start I thought something's wrong with the 2nd disk, since all the applications that were running (and thus stopped responding) were on this disk, but then I noticed that even windows explorer (who is on the 1st disk) stops responding, even task manager stops responding (1st time I see this). So, what is this sorcery?

P.S. attached there is DXDIAG report if it's needed.
