XP Dell computer shuts off

Q: XP Dell computer shuts off

I can't remember when this first started but my computer shuts down by its self. I know this is serious and microsoft sent me an message saying this was due to having the wrong driver on one of my programs but how do I fix this problem? It happens in different programs.

A: XP Dell computer shuts off

Does this happen after a certain amount of time? Or is it really just random?

Can you give examples as to what programs you are running when it happens?

My sister at university is having a problem with her labtop (she lives 4 hours away).

She says the computer freezes/shuts down at different times after she logs in. When she manages to get to the desktop she can't get on the internet, so she can't download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware or SpyBot. Similar problems in safe mode.

Any ideas on how you can download these programs while your computer is affected?

Any advice would be appreciated.

A:Dell Vista - Computer freezes/shuts down randomly

She can download Malwarebytes and its updates on another computer and move them via thumb/flash drive. Please tell her to rename the malwarebytes executable to red.bat and then try to install it. Then try to run the progrm. See if she can post a log. Thanks!

I have a Dell Inspiron 15 laptop that is connected to 2 Dell monitors via a Targus docking station and VGA cables. However, when I close my laptop to sit under the monitors, it shuts down the computer and the screens go blank. Is there a setting that allows me to close the laptop while still working off the two monitors?

A:Closing Dell Inspiron 15 laptop when connected to monitors shuts down computer

Check your Power Settings for what happens when you close the lid. Usually the laptop sleeps, hibernates or shuts down when the lid is closed. No signal is sent to monitors when that happens.

Whenever I play a movie or a game, after about 20 mins or so the display stops working. On some occasions the computer will just shut off. I have ran a AIDA64 benchmark test on my machine with all hardware devices and the system performs well. (Test ran for 5 hours +) I also checked my cpu temperatures and when I do play a movie or game temps rise into the 75C + range. I have replaced my power supply with a(thermaltake 600w tr2) and even bought a ZALMAN CNPS5X Performa 92mm FSB cooler to help but still no solution to my problem. I also tried putting in a pci-express video card and the problem still happens.

A:Computer display shuts off/computer shuts down. During video tasks.

75c isnt hot hot, but is a little hot for watching movies.

what cooler do you have on your cpu? and what are the idle temperatures?
also how long do they take to recover from the highest to the lowest temp?

this could be something as simple as poorly applied thermal compound.

im not saying it is over heating its just one possibility.
especially if youve a cpu with a built in apu and not a discreet gpu.

It all started when i opened some foreign file and it mustve been a virus or something. That triggered my computer to make these weird whirring clicky noises. Then my computer shut down. That day, i tryied to turn it on, it worked. However, the monitor didnt display anything. The computer was running but something to do with the bios just wasn't working.
Later on, my father fixed it.
However. NOW, the computer randomly shuts off by itself.
I'd start the computer on, and usually, the computer would start to make these noises similar to that of a computer reading a disc.
after the noises, the computer shuts off, and restarts by itself.
Anyone have any ideas?

So this time the problem started out as a simple issue. Whenever I bump the desk or move the keyboard out with too much force, the computer shuts off. Everybody told me that it could have been a loose connection so I checked it all and replugged everything back in. The computer starting working fine for about 5 hours then it just shut off randomly while I was playing a game. This time, though, it shut off without me bumping into anything. SO, is this a power supply issue? I'm using a 550-watt supply while running a 7800 GT. This is the right power amount so that's not my concern. And now the problem has gotten worse to the point where I turn on the computer and nothing shows up again. Windows doesn't load and the screen is on too. You here the fans and everything but nothing will load. All my parts from my old issue were replaced EXCEPT the power supply and CD-drive. I don't think it could be another loose connection b/c now nothing even shows up. Please help!!!

A:Power shuts off randomly, and any movement around computer shuts it off

Have you tried plugging into a different surge protector and different outlet?

Sounds like you need to swap the power supply to me.

Hi All.

Our 3 year old Dell Desktop has begun shutting down "randomly" during
start-up (cold-start). Sometimes it will get to the windows log-in screen, other times
it won't even go that far. Could this be an overheating problem? Where
can I look to find out what it's doing and why?

Thanks in advance.

I have a Dell XPS M1530. When it is plugged in, it seems to get kind of hot. The fans are still running, I can feel the air coming out and I can hear the fans running. I blew out the vent anyway. The real pain in the butt is that it will just shut off sometimes. I have not noticed the issue when it is not plugged in. It gives me no warning just POW! .... it's off. When I turn it back on it gives no indication of a bad shut down or anything. Sometimes it says that status monitor 3 has stopped working but, only sometimes. Any ideas?

Hi guys.

I have a Dell xps 18 which has developed a problem recently. With or without overloading the cpu temperature starts rising randomly and the machine shuts down at around 57-62 degree. Sometimes it is fine and sometimes it keeps doing this back to back. My computer has replacement i3 motherboard. The original stopped charging the battery (plugged in , not charging message) so I bought a replacement motherboard about 8 months ago. It has the proper cpu paste and everything was working fine until just recently. It even shuts down when it is in BIOS. Just wondering is the 60 degree is a dangerous temperature which is force shutting the motherboard? The idle temp is around 30-40 degree then it suddenly starts going up all the way to 60 and then dies. It does it mostly when is overload (no gaming, just a few software opened ) but then again it goes up sometime when it is just sitting there with nothing running in background. Do I need to go on eBay again a fan buy my second replacement motherboard now lol?! Any suggestion?

I love my XPS 18 and it has served me well but having these serious problem has started really putting me off it.

Many thanks.

My Dell N5010 laptop keeping shutting down after several minutes.  I've replaced the battery, and then  installed a new solid state drive thinking the hard drive was the problem. I started running diagnostics after installing the new hard drive, but the system shut down again after a few minutes of running.  Not sure what else to check, plus I'm unable to record any codes.

A:Dell Laptop N5010 Shuts Down

If the system is running abnormally hot, it can shut down -- if so, the three things to check:
1.  That the fan is running.
2. That there's no dust on the heatsink assembly
3.  If the system is running hot and 1. and 2. are OK, replace the thermal pads that sit between the GPU/CPU and heatsink - they do dry out over time and result in poor thermal transfer.
If none of these is the cause, chances are you've got a bad mainboard.

Today, I turned on my laptop and it shut down as Windows was starting up. It did the same with the battery alone, with the AC adapter and the battery, and as well without the battery and just the adapter. On another which was discontinued, it suggested pressing the power and F12 together. That didn't work either and now, when I press the power button, all indicator lights turn on but, no sounds of it starting and no display before the lights turn off. The operating system is Windows XP.

I have this really strange recurring problem with my dell xps laptop, and it started with me sending it into repairs to replace the chipset, so I wonder if it has anything to do with that. My computer functions fine, it does not overclock or overheat at all according to the diagnostic tools I have checked, and is otherwise an extremely functional machine, aside from the fact that it crashes (no BSOD, no automatic restart, just sudden shut down with no warning, losing me all unsaved work) EXACTLY (this is the interesting part) every 2 hours. And when I say exactly 2 hours, I mean pretty much to the minute. Any process explorers I used inform me that there were no noticeable spikes around the time of the shut down (or should I say crash) and I have rigorously tested the battery pack and power cable to ensure this is not a power issue (which would make little sense anyway, with the crashes happening at precise 2 hour intervals). it could be running one chrome window, a video and a chrome window, or zero significant system processes at the two hour mark, the crash comes all the same. did a little research and apparently this is a common complaint for windows 7 RC systems in 2010 that have not been properly activated, hence windows activating the bi-hourly shutoff. Funny thing is I have windows 7 home premium, an activated and completely legal version, which has been functioning well for 3 years until this time. it really is getting sort of maddening, and my laptop repair place ju... Welcome to the Forum kaziska.
When your repair shop replaced the chip set for your motherboard it could of changed how Micorosoft sees your motherboard.
That could cause a activation problem.
**You could take it back to the repair shop and explain this and ask for help.
**You could also do this and let our experts take a look at the log it produces. They will be able to see if their is a activation problem.

Hello all,

I have an issue with this older laptop I would like to use more.

It appears that whenever I fresh install Windows 7 on it and leave it on overnight, it is off when I wake up in the morning. I don't know why it does this..

I don't believe it is overheating because I leave it on for several hours in the day and it stays on just fine, but when I go to bed it turns off. My power settings are for it to stay on all day as well, unless I prompt it to turn off. I do not have any viruses either as I've done a fresh install.

I have ran my diagnostic test and everything went fine and now I'm doing additional memory tests.

I'm totally lost here..

a dell dimension 1100 shuts down after about 10-20 seconds and wont turn on again until after 5 minutes or so.. i have added thermal paste to the cpu and replaced the memory...any other suggestions as to what i should do ??

thanks in advance

A:Dell Dimension 1100 shuts down after 20 seconds

Sounds like a heat issue, or a cpu that does not have adequate thermal paste between heat sink and cpu fan.
It is old enough to require a replacement hard drive... Good to test with another hard drive.
Is the screen any different when booted to SAFE MODE?
Do you have a separate video graphics card, or is it connected to onboard graphics?
Power supply could be failing. A power supply tester costs $10 to $15 on up to $15, but just exchanging with another power supply would satisfy that inquiry.
Other items to consider on that model: CMOS battery might be failing.
One simply test is to remove and reseat all cables. Consider replacing the EIDE 80 Connector 40 conductor cable from board to hard drive.
Clean all dust, dirt, fiber and hair out of the heat sink, if not already done.

Hi everyone,
my dell xps 15 shuts down when I'm working with graphic softwares such as Photoshop, Illustrator or Maya.
I have downloaded Dell Support Assist and ran a complete system stress test, all passed except the Nvidia Card one which says "cannot run test".
So I manually ran only the Nvidia card test, a 3D animation window pops up. At the bottom I can see the CPU usage which runs about  99% and the GPU temperature which quickly goes up to C 103/105.
As expected the computer shutdown after few seconds.
I assume the video card needs to be replaced, but any sort of advice will be appreciated.

A:Dell Xps 15 shuts down when working with media softwares

Before replacing any parts I suggest uninstalling and reinstalling both the Intel HD first an Nvidia drivers even if you have the latest drivers,  Make sure that the drivers have been completely removed from the system and then reinstall them, i would download the drivers and save them  on the desktop so that you will have them ready.
If your system is a couple years old or older I would clean up the cooling vents as much as possible. get a can of compressed air and blow out the vents.
Once completed test with just the Intel HD *go into 3D settings and change the profile to the benchmark or test that you are using to run as "Battery Saving", then test changing the programs profile to "high performance" and see if there is a difference.
I am hoping that it isn't a problem with the GPUs as they are integrated on the system board and it will need to be swapped out to correct any graphics failure.
Please let me know what you find out.

Hello,I am running Windows Vista Home Premium SP2 on a Dell Inspiron 1520. This is a 3 yr old laptop and with the battery being completely dead since the past one year, I have been running the machine by plugging it into a socket. Now, sometime last month, the machine started shutting down abruptly. This used to happen at random intervals, with no set pattern. Sometimes it would run fine for days, while other times it would shut down within 15 mins of startup. The shut down behaviour was as if someone had removed the power supply - the laptop would just go point blank dead. I had the machine checked - the fan was found to have dust blockage so it was cleaned up. And the thermal paste was found to have dried up, so a new layer was applied. The machine ran well for some days, but then the same shut down problem started again. I had it sent back to the technician, but it supposedly runs fine when he's testing it (he loads the machine with video, audio and a couple of programmes). So, I get the machine back home, and lo-behold the problem is back. And as before, its abrupt, with no set pattern.I ran a Speccy: as you can see, the CPU is running at 60 degrees celsius (with one malware bytes scan and one firefox window running). Is that too hot for a laptop? Or is it normal?I have an authentic version of Kaspersky Anti Virus installed, and I regularly run Malwarebytes, Ad aware and Spybot, so I am pretty sure that I am not i... Read more

I am facing a kind of unique problem with my Dell inspiron N5010 laptop. When ever I carry my laptop to some place lets say from home to college it stops booting, when I switch on my laptop it starts but after 10-15 seconds it shuts off, also when I try to keep the sysem in bios it again shuts off within 10-15 seconds.
Twist in the problem is that if I keep my laptop idle for 20-30 minutes it starts working fine (I never remove battery or ram just left my laptop idle)
another thing is i face ths problem wheonlyn laptop is carried by me in my back pack or u can say when laptop is subjected to movment.
I noticed this pattern seriously. For past 15 days I didn't displaced my laptop from my desk and it work like any normal laptop but today when I took it to my friends place and there when I tried to boot it it starts and shuts off within 15 seconds while booting so I did the same left it idle witouth even removing ram or battery or charger for 10 -15 minutes and then it starts working fine.
Why is this happening is there is a problem i hardware or just some loose connection.

A:Dell inspiron N5010 shuts off while booting in 10-15 seconds

I have the same dell inspiron n5010 which shuts down immeaditely when powered. doesn't even go past the DELL welcoming screen! All my attempts to clean up the vents/fan and reapplying the thermal paste both on cpu/gpu dint solve the problem neither did resitting the cpu/rams/hdd. Also disconnecting all the mainboard add-ons like hdd, dvd, wifi/Ethernet, sd cards and leaving the mainboard naked dint solve the problem. Conclusion; MOTHERBOARD IS DEAD !! RIP

Running Windows XP probably SP2.Moved this computer a few weeks ago, defragged, deleted old programs, tried to streamline. Everything working fine for about two weeks, it was running faster, and playing Internet games with ease. Then turned it on one day and before it finishes loading all programs it shuts down completely. Sometimes it doesn't get past the Windows start up screen; sometimes it loads McAfee and all desktop icons then stops. Tried to start in safe mode, varying length of "up" time. Yesterday I also noticed audio does not come through the speakers but it does come through the headphone jack. Shut down means it just gets power off, as in there is no power supply. Just goes.

This always happen when I play games, play a movie (normally in fullscreen) and sometimes while browsing, opening folders or anything. Strange thing is that laptop if left unattended, runs for hours n hours at one go.

I checked for CPU temperature, it varies from 45-55 degrees. The fan is running fine too. It keeps blowing hot air. Tried running memtest86 for any memory issue, but the test completed successfully with no error.

I dont know what to do next, change of power suppply? change of fan? change of thermal paste?

P.S. Battery of laptop is left with no backup. It normally discharges in 5 mins. If that is some additional info for you all.

A:Dell Studio 1555 : Shuts down/Power Off Automatically

Hi Nishant,
Please try the below mentioned steps to isolate the issue:
1. Update BIOS to the latest version available on the support site.
2. Update the video card drivers.
3. If you have more than 1 antivirus software installed, remove one.
4. Check in Power Options if any of the settings are enabled to set the system to turn itself off after a specific time.
5. Disconnect any external devices if they are plugged in to the laptop to replicate the issue.
6. Check if the system works fine only with the power adapter/charger (without battery)
Now that the hardware diagnostics did not come up with any errors, it may also be a software issue. If you have all the data backed up, I'd suggest you to re-install the operating system.

When you press the power button, the power light goes on steady, the HDD indicator blinks once, then the system shuts off. Never get anything on the screen.
Once in a great while, the system will actually boot into Windows and works fine.
The battery is charged, the charger is good.
I have tried removing RAM, HDD and can't get into BIOS even, unless it is one of those off chances the system stays on.
Could it be something is shorting out? I've tried taking out the battery and unplugging it and holding the power button to discharge, but no luck.

A:Dell Inspiron 17R Power Light on, HDD Blinks, then Shuts Off

It sounds like the computer isn't getting past the POST (Power On Self Test) where is looks at all the peripherals to be sure there isn't problem.
You have pulled the hdd and re-seated it, removed the RAM and re-seated it.  But if there is more than one RAM module you should remove one of the two modules (assuming that there are only two) to see if you have a bad module.
Who is the manufacturer of the hdd?

I have a Dell Inspiron N5110 model Laptop. It is not under warranty now. My laptop shuts down after 5-8 seconds of disconnecting the Power Adapter from the Laptop. The issue is seen like this:-
1.When the Battery is fully charged (100%) or has some charge,The laptop gets ON and works fine until the battery gets discharged.
2.When the Battery is about to finish the charge,or anytime I connect the Power Adapter to the Laptop,it shows that the battery is charging.
3.Now,when the battery is about to get fully charged,Or let its charging,Somehow the power gets off or I unplug the Power Adapter from the Laptop, then the Laptop gets abnormally shutdown after 5-8 secs.
4.Now If I press the Power button again to make the Laptop ON,I am not able to make it ON.
5.If I connect the Power Adapter again, then press the Power Button,i am able to make the Laptop On. But the lights in the front panel of the laptop shown a orange light that blinks.
6.I even brought a new battery of Dell and still i face the same issue.
Kindly Suggest me ,what can be done.

Hi Saswata,
Please provide following details:
1. Did you buy the battery from Dell or is it a third party battery?2. Did you perform any hardware change apart from the battery?3. Is it an issue that has started after replacing the battery?

I have been on this forum once before. I finally did get a refund from whitesmoke, but it took forever, and I managed to get all their crap off my laptop...but once again, I sit in the woods, a couple hundred miles from any town so have no access to technical help.

Yesterday I was watching a movie on my Dell refurbished notebook laptop's called a Latitude, and I use (windows XP professional). Suddenly the screen went black so I rebooted and started watching a movie once again and a few minutes later it did it again and I had to reboot. Well, the problem continued with less and less time between start up and automaric shut down. Finally now when the screen shuts off to black I try to restart it but it appears to still be ON with the screen black so I have to try and shut it down but it won't because I can't get to the start menu with the black screen. I must hold the off-button down for an extended period to get it to shut down. When I restart, it shows the windows start up screen and then my desktop flashes on and off and on again, then the screen goes black before I can do anything at all. One time it shut down and I restarted and it was already on and I thought it wasn't because the screen was black and it said "preparing to stand by". I have some important stuff on the laptop, and I can see on the actual computer console (not the screen) that there is a little lit-up symbol of a lock. What would have caused the lock symbol to come up? I... Read more

Ok I am fixing someones dell dimension I believe it is a 2300 running xp and it boots up just fine with no problems. Then all of a sudden after about a minute it shuts down. Then if you boot it up again it boots fine, but shuts down a little quicker. The longer you leave it off the longer it will stay on, if you continually turn it on and of it shuts down faster. The difference is only like 20 seconds.

I tested the power supply with a psu tester and it passed.

I cleaned the memory stick and made sure there was no dust on it or in the slot.

And that is all I have tried

Any idea what it could be?

Should I try reseating my CPU? Clean the heatsink?

Could someone point me to a how-to or wiki for doing either of the above?

When  I unplug the power cord/charger from the computer when it is running the laptop will BlueScreen and reboot, message when this happens is Kernal_Security_Check_Failure.  Battery is fully charged and showing 100%.  The charger is outputting 19.5V DC.  I also tried another Dell charger I have and the computer does the same thing, bluescreens and reboots??  Ran Dell diagnostics on internet support and everything passes.  Drivers are up to date and it indicates devices are working properly.
Anyone had this happen and how to fix it?

Hi, im new on here but have used the site many times when looking for solutions to my problems.
I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 (win 7) which ran out of battery and shut down as normal. When i went to restart it it said that it could not restore the session so i could try again or delete the data and start again. I initially went for the restore (twice) but it failed to load up, causing the machine to abruptly shut down. I the decided to use the delete session and start again option which again, did not work and led to the machine abruptly shutting down.
I started the machine up again and was prompted to runthe startup repair software which again caused an abrupt shutdown. I managed to start in safe mode which lasted for 5 mins but again shut down abruptly.
On the last start up i got a blue screen saying something about a serious error, it only stayed on screen for 20 secs or so so i couldnt write it down.
I cant do anything as the machine shuts down anytime up to 5 mins after powering on - never getting windows 7 running.
The fan is also running constantly and appears to be working very hard.
I have not installed any new software (to the best of my knowledge)
Is it a HDD problem? or something else?
Can anyone please shed some light as to why this is happening and suggest a fix if possible. I need my computer back!!!
Thanks in advance,

Ok I"ve been haivng a problem with my computer lately. First of all, It started when my computer suddenly froze, So I turned it off( by holdin fown power button) Then when I turned it back on,it would load into the BIOs screen(DELL logo,w/ status bar) for about 3 secs. then it dies off without notice.
Well recently, someone suggested to reinstall the battery (inside; form mother board). SO I removed it,and placed it back, turn the computer back on. It did all the IDE configuration thing....Then an Alert message came up, stating ALERT!|Previous thermal processor failure.(the first time I did this,it said thermal event/error,now it says this all the time I reinstall battery). Also, I checked the system event log(f12) and noticed, it said " CPUO TEMPERATURE" like 10 times.I think it also said CMOS Battery error, but I think that's from the reinstallation of the battery...
SO anyways, I then proceeded into windows... I was able to log in (it didnt die yet) But then after about 5 minutes, It froze again(just like the very begining),but the computer didn't turn off,it just stayed frozen. I turned off the comp, turn It back on, and did the same thing(shutted off after 3 sec). SO basically It's a repeat. I can only boot up when I reinstall the battery.....but then It does the same thing again(freezes...)

I've run into an odd problem, that I've been experiencing the past two weeks. At random my computer will freeze up, the monitor will turn off and the computer beeps. The motherboard fires back an error code: 75 Detect HDD IDE device detection. My Windows boots on an SSD drive, what is happening is the boot order is being rearranged, rearranging it back everything works.

Why is the computer while using it, switching to an IDE drive at random ?

A:Computer Switches to IDE Drive at Random - Shuts Down Computer

Maybe the ide drive is failing in a circuit board, the bio detects that and shuts it off, or windows shuts it down.

Test another drive or take it out and see what it does.

The short version of my question is exactly what the topic says-- Can I install a Dell-provided OEM version of Vista on a non-Dell computer?

But, here's the wordier version giving context, if anyone's interested.

About 10 months ago, I guess, I got a Dell Vostro that came with Windows Vista Home Basic. However, I had no interest in Vista (because I already had a Windows machine) and the very first thing I did was install Ubuntu on it. I still have the Vista reinstall disk, though, which, to my memory, hasn't been used.

Now I'm planning on getting a barebones system and upgrading what I see fit. For the time being, I'm going to use the Windows 7 RC, but I'd like to get the uber-great upgrade deal that they're having to pre-order either the Business or Home Premium version upgrade. So, to do that, I'd need an XP installation or a Vista installation. Is there any reason, legal or software-related, that I wouldn't be able to install Vista using that disk that came with the Vostro?

I heard somewhere that sometimes if you try, it'll say something like "This is not a Dell computer, you evil, evil person" and refuse to install, so I wanted to make sure before I pre-ordered the upgrade. I don't want to get the upgrade and have nothing to upgrade, of course.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1520 laptop with Windows Vista OS. I have a Dell 926 printer interfaced to it via USB. Printer driver is installed and the printer does communicate at times with the computer and does a good job printing. However, intermittently when trying to print a document I'll get a message on the computer that says that communication has been lost and print job failed.

I've checked all connections to make sure they are solid and no debris that might cause this.
That has not corrected the problem.
The other thing that happens is that the document I want to print will stay in the print queue/spooler and if I shut the computer and printer down and restart both it will print the job. And it may continue to print jobs but it's just a matter of time.

Needless to say this is frustrating. I can print several jobs in a row with no problem and then I'll get this "communication has been lost between printer and computer". And I have to go thru the procedure above to get the last job printed.

My wife doesn't understand how this works and will try to print the same job several times with the commo problem and then complains when it won't print.....and then they all print when the above procedure is followed.

Any ideas what is going on??? Any fixes??

The next evening I would power up and see that the battery was at 20% from full charge. This is a BRAND NEW as in <2 months XPS 9550. I checked my event log and WHAT THE [email protected]#$??? Was given a Dell Optiplex 360 that I found out after getting a nasty virus had a bootleg XP OS
I also did not have any disks with it. I had older disks for a Dell 4600 that I used to wipeout the hard drive and install the new OS. Everything works fine except that I can not load any of the drivers from the second disk, (it was a 3 disk series)
thus at least at this point not able to connect with my cable internet. Cable people told me I needed the drivers.Any suggestions or can it just not be done.
Thanks, Al

A:Loading Older Dell OS To Newer Dell Computer

You will have to go to the dell website look under support and then drivers and downloads for your model of computer. If you use the service tag number on the computer it will make sure you get the correct ones you need. For future reference so you wont have this hassle again burn all of the drivers to a cd so you will be all set the next time.

A:Computer shuts down when computer is coming out of sleep

hm ... The issue might be one of your devices is going into "deep sleep" and cannot come back upon resuming from sleep mode. Recently, I made a brief post about my own magical adventures with this issue so you might give it a shot.

Personally, I would try disabling the deep sleep option of your HDD first since whichever device might be the culprit is apparently vital enough to crash the entire system.

A while back I posted about a problem with my computer in this thread about my computer randomly shutting down. After blowing out all of the dust, checking all the connections, and cleaning the fans, doing a system recovery when windows wouldn't start, the computer was working fine for about a week. Now today it shut down again. After pulling the power cord in and out of the power supply a few times, it finally turned back on and ran for about 10 minutes before it shut down again. I went to the local computer shop and the guy gave me a used power supply to put in, I put it in, turned the computer on and about 15 minutes later it shut down again. Again, I pulled the power cord in and out of the power supply a few times, I got the computer to turn back on and load to the desktop only to shut down again after a couple of seconds. I felt behind the case where the power supply is and it felt pretty hot. So I took the side cover off the case and placed a table top fan facing towards the inside of the computer, turned it on low, and the computer has been on and working fine for the past 2 hours. So this is where I'm at. The local computer shop doesn't have new power supplies, he said he would have to order one, I'm so frustrated, I'm ready to take a hammer to the computer.

Hey. I have recently acquired a problem when I leave my computer on, it will shutdown in about 15 minutes when the screensaver comes on. It will also boot up again, but it says there is a boot disk error, and it won't find my hard drive until I swap the sata port. I thought it was a heat issue, I do have fans to cool it. I thought it might be my graphics card, so I purchased a new one (which I wanted to do), I even changed my power supply to a bigger wattage. I am tempted of getting a motherboard which I don't want to do it's my last resort. Is it a virus or malware?

my computer randomly beeps twice (sounds like the same beeping as when the computer starts), "my computer" "accesories calculator" and "windows help and support" open themselves, and the computer goes through the shutdown process and turns off.

These events are all at random times and in no particular order, it can be on for 20 mins and start one or all of those events, or it can go for hours before it does it? I have run malicious removal tool, windows defender, zonealarm antivirus and spyware, spybot, malwarebytes anti spyware and even switched off my zonealarm and installed pc tools and run that.

Anyone have any ideas or suggestions what is the matter, it's doing my head in wondering?

Unfortunately this isn't the only problem, I can now start my computer up and log into my account but, it then suddenly shuts down.
It isn't my psu because I used a psu tester and it works. I'm currently stumped on what it might be.
I have just finished placing everything into my new case too(haf x 942).
Thanks in advance

My computer recently has been behaving very badly.

I will push the button to turn it on and it turns on for about 6 seconds and then shuts itself down.
The light remains on for the case and the PSU but the PSU ceases to operate and all the fans shut down.

Apparently the computer knows how long I'm holding the power button because pushing it for the usual amount of time (roughly 5 seconds) turns it off.

I at first thought the CPU fan was failing so I replaced the fan/heatsink but the new fan still revved and the computer still shuts off after about 6 seconds. It should be on the CPU very securely and proper paste is applied.

At first nothing appeared on the screen when turning on the computer (nothing appears at all for the duration of it being on). However, recently I rebuilt the computer to stock Pavilion a320n (although the new Heatsink/Fan are still in place) and the computer manages to put an image on the screen, it is the blue booting page with the HP logo and the keys to enter setup. The CPU fan does not rev anymore. The boot page only stays on the screen shortly, as I said before the whole process lasts around 6 seconds. The stock configuration uses the original power supply, and the added graphics card and RAM are not in there.

What could be the problem??
I know longer think it is a video card failure because now that I'm using the onboard video which was stock it still gives the same problem - though I do see stuff show up on screen now, it still shut... Read more

A:Computer shuts down by itself ?!

Hello Aleksa,

I do not know what that is, someone else may have to shoot in here if they do, but I can troubleshoot some things with you for right now.

What antivirus software do you have? You might download and install malwarebytes with whatever it is that you have, as it can provide further help in identifying and removing malware.

Let me know what antivirus software you have as soon as you finish updating malwarebytes and performing a full scan.

Also, please fill out your system specs (this tool may help you out a great deal). This way I can offer some more suggestions based on what hardware you have.

I got my repaired computer back from the shop with a new Intel Desktop board DQ965GF w. Core2 Duo CPU and 4GB DRAM, plus an nVidia GeForce 9600 video board w. 1GB.

XP PRO Service Pack 3 was installed w. Norton Internet Security and Norton Ghost, plus one reformatted Western Digital drive and one blank reformatted WD drive.

I cloned drive C:\ to the blank drive and rebooted. This seemed to confuse the computer, which had trouble completing boot-up. I disconnected the second drive and proceeded for several weeks, creating Ghost Restore Points every few days, but the PC had trouble completing boot-up, often failing to Blue Screen.

Eventually I went to the Restore Point right after I removed the second drive, but still had trouble booting. During the process, I added four external USB drives and Adobe Lightroom 2.0 and Photoshop CS3.

Several days ago, the boot-up trouble went away, but the computer began turning off from 10 minutes to an hour after being turned on.

Otherwise, everything seems fine.

I will attach a HiJackThis log but first I want to get this message sent before the system shuts off again ...

I don't know if this is a virus, but my computer shuts down. It started about a week ago. I had been leaving the computer on and the power switch was orange. I could not shut it off. I had to disconnect the power and wait a few minutes and then it started up. Trend Micro loaded and said that it reverted to a previous virus scanning pattern. Since then the computer has shut down several times, including 3 times today. Each time I had to disconnect the power, wait, then start it up. The last time it was only on 10 minutes. Prior to 8/1/08 this had never happened before. The operating system is Windows XP. I recently loaded Service Pack 3 which said it ran successfully. I have Trend Micro Internet Security and I also run Super Antispyware. Any ideas? Computer, Virus or Service Pack 3.

I use Windows XP Professional SP3 . My default browser is IE,and email is OE. I have started having some problems today. Twice my computer has just shut itself down and immediately rebooted itself while I was surfing the internet. In additon, both OE and IE have been crashing a lot more often today. I am not getting any BSODs. Scanning with AVG reveals no infections.
One thing I noticed was that both times the computer shut down and rebooted, I was running Rhapsody. And Rhapsody is behaving a little strangely too. Normally when I click the desktop Icon for it, it takes me to the site, already logged on. Today it is showing me as not logged on,so I have to log on.
Do you think Rhapsody has somehow gotten corrupted and is doing something to cause my computer to crash? Or what else could it be? Thanks in advance for any help you can give me. I will check back later. PS, as I was typing this just now,IE tried to crash, but somehow recovered so I didnt lose this post.

Similar problem to Donatbollonk.
Got slower over about 4-5 weeks then began shutting down.
Now sometimes stays on for an hour or so or even a couple of minutes, sometimes restarting, sometimes before windows has loaded.
When doing this the "calculator" view comes up and the mutye is removed from the sound.
Have tried both restores on recovery disc also recovery with format - still the same.
Spent whole day on phone to microsoft - they thought it was SP2 playing up so uninstalled and reinstalled. still the same.
any help would be greatly appreciated.
This my 4th attempt.

A:computer shuts down

Since you've already done a repair and formatted, try a clean install. If the problem persists, it may be because your CPU is overheating. Ensure that all your fans are spinning and inside the case is free of dust.

If all is well under the hood, you may have a power supply that is failing. Unfortunately the best way to test for this is to have it replaced.

I have a P3-733 on an ASUS CUV4X board running XP and the problem is this:

It started a while ago when, after i put the computer on sleep or standby, it wouldn't come back on. This happened probably over a few weeks. Now, it spontaneously turns off, either after working for a while or even when starting up. It doesn't completely turn off though - the power light flashes as if the computer had been put on standby, but, of course, i can't revive it.

Thanks for any suggestions on what the problem could be and how to fix it

Hello, this is my 1st time here, My toshiba (2 yrs old) on windows 7 decides to shut off,, it takes about 20 minutes for it to restart , checking and restoring it says. also on restart several Toshiba notices appear, saying cant find this or that,. I know that is not the problem, I suspect it is high CPU usage, as Norton says so .
What can I do please, this might only happen every 2 or 3 days, and often twice a day.
Could it be heat related as sometimes the pc feels warm underneath?
Thanks, I,m getting desperate.

A:computer shuts off

Hi and welcome to TSF.

First of all, there is a diffrence between warm and hot. a computer can still work propperly even if it's "Warm".

Second, Try starting your computer in save mode. You do this by starting up your computer and pressing F8. In this you can select Save mode with networking.

See if this problem still occurs.

Hi, hope someone can help. I have a problem that's been going on for sometime,. When I use my MS Word and go to save my document the computer shuts down as though there was a power failure ( it doesn't happen every time, just enough to be frustrating-& loss of my work). I click on 'save' It shuts down & in a blink it boots right back up on its own without a problem. When I shut the computer off manually after one of these incidences and turn it back on it shows a message that the computer "had recovered from a serious error". Now the shut down was only happening during my attempt to save in ms word, but now it has happened while attempting to save in notepad. Same thing, click on save and down she goes and boots right back up on its own????? I have reformated my system, reinstalled XP and it still happens. Any thoughts on what might be going on?

I am using a Dell Dimension 4550, OS XP

Hey guys/girls. when I say "shutdown", i dont mean its as if the powerchord was yanked from the wall. its as if i went to the start menu and clicked the shutdown button myself. the windows start closing one by one, then it proceeds to the windows Shutdown screen, going through the whole "formal" process.

comp info:
Dell Inspiron 530 Desktop
Processor Intel Pentium III Xeon processor
Processor Speed 2.43 GHz
Memory (RAM) 4096 MB
Operating System Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Operating System Version 5.1.2600

im almost positive its not from overheating. i have checked the CPU temp using a sensor program and it says all temps are fine and are far from their limits. but i opened up the comp and cleaned off all the dust and link from all the fans and such anyway. the room temp is cool, no sun reaches the CPU.

i dont think its from power supply failure because the computer goes through the whole shutdown process. if figure if the powersupply was failing everything would just instantly shut down. if im quick enough and can get "shutdown -a" into Run, i can sometimes avert shutdown.

my computer wont let me restore to any previous dates, they all say something along the lines of "there have been no changes". i was trying something and accidentally erased all my restore points since then, not that they were of any use anyway.

ive run virus, spyware, malware, adware, etc. scan, nothing outstanding came up. the shutdowns still happen... Read more

Every time I run AVG, it gets stuck on a certain file while scanning and after an hour my computer restarts itself. Any help on how to fix this?

A:Computer Shuts Down

Probably a virus file fighting back.

Please download HijackThis - this program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer. Create a folder at C:\HJT and move HijackThis.exe there. Run a scan and save the log file. Get HijackThis Analyzer and save it to the same folder as the hijackthis.log file. Run HijackThis Analyzer and type in y if you agree. Open up the result.txt file created. Copy the whole result.txt log and post it in the forum. Do not fix anything in HijackThis since they may be harmless.

This morning the computer was off. I had left it running. Since restarting it the computer shuts down during the boot process or within 10 - 30 minutes of starting. Its not hot, I've checked the tempurature. I'm very good about virus and other protections.

Mine PSU is an Enermax EG475p-sfma24p.
How would I test the psu? This one is still under warranty. I don't have a second computer and I am not too smart with electricity but I can follow instructions.
