Q: i think tech gave me a lame fix

@ Dell's that is........... i researched as much as i could before contacting them, my issue being an application (Zcfgsvc.exe) (for my wireless connection) was running my processor at almost 100% almost all the time...i thought maybe a driver was missing...i did just do a total reinstall due to a hd replacement..
Anyway this is what he did....it was pretty neat..he took over my computer by remote access...went into my c drive from there he located my Zcfgsvc.exe file cut it and pasted it on my desktop....and said "there"....!!!! ya..thats it....leave it there!!!!...i dunno! ....it's not running up my processor, but, do i really have to have it sitting there all the time???....finding info on this subject has been really really hard...i can usually fix things myself, but this one was very difficult to find info on....at best i would get sites that would offer me a "reg scan" or reg cleaner.....is that what i need to do?.....any advice would be welcome...thanks...Joanne

I have a hp psc 1350 v printer, trying to install on this machine; printer was installed on this machine in nov.2003 and worked fine until 2 weeks ago. at that time , printer quit working and in the control panel, printer icon showed up like a hidden file. tried to reinstall printer several times with no success. contacted hp support, spent several hours, spanning 4 days ,installing and uninstalling software, trying to install this printer. changed usb cables and same problem.other usb devises are recognised instantly. Hp support sent me a new printer, tried to install, same problem...no printer. so, tried to install printer on 2 other pcs and no problem, worked great (one machine has the exact same mother board as the problem pc).Hp says its a chip problems, problem started when i did a windows recommended driver update for via chip. CAN YOU HELP?

Here are my specs:

Operating System Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 1 (build 2600)
System Model = ECS = P4VXASD2+ = 1.0 (motherboard)
Main Circuit Board Board: ECS P4VXASD2+ 1.0
Bus Clock: 100 megahertz
BIOS: American Megatrends Inc. 07.00T 04/02/01
Processor 2.00 gigahertz Intel Pentium 4
8 kilobyte primary memory cache
512 kilobyte secondary memory cache
256 Megabytes Installed Memory
Did have 768, took out 512

Thanks in advance, Jim Green

A:HP Tech support gave up on this one

Uninstall the printer, through ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS, then go to Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device Manager and remove any left over HP/printer entries - look under HP, USB, all the categories. If HP gave you a seperate uninstaller to use then run that, they usually have one and if you look through your CD you might be able to find it hidden somewhere. Then unplug the printer and all other USB devices - except USB a mouse and Keyboard if yours happen to be USB.

Now still in Device Manager remove all USB hubs and then all USB Controllers.

Now go here: http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=403 and download and install the latest VIA 4-in-1 drivers and reboot as request. Then reboot again after the USB controllers are reinstalled.

Now download the latest printer drivers from HP's website for your model if you haven't done so yet and start the installation. Do not plug in the printer until prompt to do so or until the installation is totally complete. When plugging in the printer use a USB connector that is not near the one you used before - they are usually in pairs of two.

If that Fails you can do a System Restore from Programs - Accessories - System to a date before the problems started and hope it works and doesn't recur.

XP runs better with more RAM - if there's nothing wrong with it then add it back in.

...and told him to open calculator. I had him start on the Desktop. He first looks for the Start button, to no avail. Looking confused, he thinks for a second, the just starts typing "calculator" on the Desktop. After that doesn't work, he starts clicking around until he accidentally grabs the top of the screen and pins it on the side. He then clicks in the empty space and makes it to the Start screen. Then, he looks for calculator in my pinned things, and after no success, he then types "calculator" again and successfully opens the program. His first comments "well, it will take some getting use to, but it's no big deal." I then show him how the Start button actually is there, just hidden. He affirms that yeah it's no big deal, just will take some getting used to.

Later, he was watching me use my PC, and I downloaded the Wikipedia app and pinned it. After that, I put down the computer and played some Xbox with him beside me. He's very interested in history, so he picks up the computer, and goes into the Wikipedia app. He asks me how to search in the app, and I showed him how to use Charms. After that, he was using it as if he had his whole life. He searches some Wikipedia, then when he can't find what he wanted there, he goes back to Start (using the hidden button) and hit the IE icon (which sends him to the desktop) and uses it to search and find things. I show him how he could bring up the recent apps menu to quickly go back to Wikipedia, an... Read more

I got a pop up that was loud and wouldn't let me close it saying, "your computer has been infected call Microsoft" and I did because I turned it off and it was still yelling st me when I turned it back on. I gave the tech remote access and he said I had a tiny something trojan virus. Well I didn't fall for paying, got off the phone, held power button down and turned computer off. Am able to use it fine now with no more warning but am I safe after giving the remote access? I was on the phone for about 30 mins while he was going around to different areas in my computer telling me what all of the "problems" were.

A:Gave remote access to a "Microsoft tech support" am I safe?

It wasn't Microsoft, it was a scam.   I suggest you have a look here and create a new post asking for assistance to ensure your computer has not been compromised .

Hello,

I am a Laptop Technician in Canada, and well to e honest I am really tired of junking so many motherboards because something has gone wrong on them. So I have decided to learn how to track down what on the board is blown, and replace it.

Can anyone you point me to where I can get board schematics and tech manuals for various laptops? And possible some sites with nicely documented details on the process of tracing down the short or whatnot?

Thank you,
Randy

Hi, I have some .avi files that are in lame mp3 audio format. Whenever I use windows media player it will crash my computer. I tried to install the lame codec and still it crashes. I can use vlc and it'll work just fine. Any suggestions?

Thanks

A:Lame MP3

Allo cybrvipr

Try loading your .MP3 file into 'Audacity' Audio Editor (freely available from here), then export the file as .MP3.

You'll need to point the editor to your 'Lame' encoder, for the export to work - it's in the options somewhere

I just downloaded exact audio copy to rip my cds. I was trying to install the program, and it prompted me for a LAME.exe. I was able to conclude that this is the codec for ripping to MP3. I wondered where I could get this file.

Download CDex from here

It has the lame encoder file(s)...so you can directly extract(rip) the audio cds!

Can any music lovers tell me what LAME is (as a codec) and how does it compare to the normal mp3?

A:LAME ???

Hello mich and welcome to the forums

I, personally, stick to LAME as it's so widely available and accepted. There is a great review of the four biggies here:

Ars Technica: Do MP3 Encoders Sound Different? - Page 1 - (3/2000)

he envelop please: Low bit rate winner (128 kbs):
Fraunhofer. It was no contest. While not CD quality, the FhG encoder was sonically the least offensive. And with its superior measurements, it clearly beat out the other encoders at 128 kbs. If you have a tiny hard drive or a portable MP3 player with only 32 MB of memory, this is the encoder to use.
High bit rate winners (192 and 256 kbs):
Fraunhofer, LAME, Blade, and Xing (in order of preference). At the higher bit rates they don’t all sound the same, but the encoders in general were very listenable. I found the Xing high frequency measurements a bit worrisome, but at 256 kbs I thought the Xing encoder sounded as good as the rest. If you are "Napsterizing" some music, I think 192 kbs is a good compromise between sound quality and download times. For my personal MP3 CD-R disks, I encode at 256 kbs. This is still more than 7 CDs on one CD-R.

Unless you have a good reason not to, such as if you're in the business and don't have a LAME license, then I would just stick to LAME to be honest. I've never had any issues with it.

Last wee I wrote the below letter to the author of "99 ways to make your computer blazingly fast." He must be busy, he never replied yet. This problem is not just ongoing, but getting worse. If there is a way to attach a fie I will.

Mr. Kishore,

I am going through the "99 ways to make your computer blazingly fast" found at http://helpdeskgeek....blazingly-fast/ Not only do I appreciate you writing this, but also leaving contact info. I bought this Compaq hardly used off of my cousin in May, it only had 512MB of RAM and was slow. I maxed out the RAM capability to take advantage of the dual core. Only 2GB, but it was the fastest PC I ever owned. Last month or so it doubled in start-up time and last week that doubled.and I don't know why. I always turn off unneeded programs through "msconfig." I turned back on quite a few, ones that I'm not sure of the importance, so it shows up on "Startup Delayer" and I hope you can tell me what's needed. For example; one program is called "HPBoot Optimizer." A screen shot is attached and I've copied and pasted from a Belarc Advisor Report. Please be aware, I'm not technically advanced in computers, but I'm not PC Illiterate either. Thank you for your expertise.

Hi.

I'm not sure if this is a virus so I'll describe the problem before going through the attachments.

Each time I want to watch a video (you tube or any other site) there is a Lame MP3 popup. It freezes my computer and crashes the browser.

I googled the problem and it seems common. Is it something that can be fixed easily?

I have windows 7 using IE10.

Thanks

Two new updates came in for Firefox, I took them and now am running 5.5.06. Well, running is a pretty strong term, since it's dragging, and my security program keeps informing me of outgoing attempts with no program listed as the culprit. I don't know what to do about this, so I've been using IE temporarily, which is NOT my choice. Can any of you experts give me a possible solution?
It's definitely the new version of Firefox that's the problem, as I can surf all day (albeit among the sharks) with IE.
I'm on WinXP, so could do a system restore to before the updates, but I'd lose a few things and would rather try some less drastic repair. Thanks so much for your help! Shoshana

Hello,

I'm looking to find when FiOS will be coming to Canada (if it ever does....). Does anyone know??

I am getting junk speeds with the local DSL ISP right now. Shaw Cable is a bit better but their customer service SUCKS. I get horrible gaming pings and I'm sick of it. SpeedTest.net says my speeds are a lot higher than they actually are. I get the average of 300 KB/sec DL on a server.

Here are my results:
Are these average results? Do lot's of people get speeds as junky as this?
Thanks,
AC.

Well I had the consrv.dll virus. I had microsoft essentials delete it. Then I got a BSOD and turned to this forum for help. Saw an old post on the virus and how to get a log. So I did that and posted the log but no one helped, just some lame ass removing all my posts and not providing me any help what so ever.

I can not follow your "Preperation guide" since that suggests you have a virus that still lets you run your Windows completely fine, what happens when you have no access but ms dos prompt? What does your guide say to do then? Nothing, and so then delete anyones posts who can't help that they have a severe virus that prevents them from following your guide?

Well I posted a topic in Vista and it is gone and it doesn't appear in the moved section either the "Is it a virus". Of course it is a virus you bleeptard. I just had Microsoft essentials delete it. I was also requested in that topic to post in this specific forum (Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs) and I did that but it is not here either. Seems the moderator is a dick head and bleep. So bleep you bleep.

A:Lame asses

There is no call for rudeness. The OS forums are not used for malware removal. That is why your initial topic got moved.

The Am I Infected forum is used for a few purposes:

1) To determine if there is an infection

2) Remove those infections that are easily removed

3) To begin disinfection process and to refer folks to the Malware Removal Forum if it requires more sophistocated tools than are allowed in the Am I Infected forum.

Your new topic is here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic429990.html and has been reported to those who specialize in non-booting computers.

These forums are very busy, and our helpers are all volunteers. I know it's frustrating, but patience is necessary.

This topic is now closed.

It's not a program, it's an MP3 encoder that you use in conjunction with an MP3 player you already have. What software ddo you currently use to play MP3's on your computer.

I don't know why some people call it a codec when it can't even decode. The settings for decoding aren't even present. So, what I'm asking is: is there a lame decoder available? I would like to see if it's better than the never changing Fanhaufer codec. Does winamp use this same system default mp3 codec?

A:Lame is not a codec!

Lame is a codec, often used for encoding mp3's...
(Lame stands for LAME Ain't an Mp3 Encoder)

You can download it from here as a win32 command line binary file...

You can grab a GUI from here...

You can set which codec WinAmp should use for encoding/decoding mp'3s under it's options...
Here is MPG123 which The Coaster Factory claims is a perfect decoder...

I hope this answers some of your questions
(If not, post back with a bit more precise Q...)

I stumbled upon this forum just the other day and thought "Wow!" I had hoped that my first question would be better than this but, here goes...

I have "documents" produced with Q&A 4.0 for DOS circa 1994. I used to convert these (and databases) to MS Word using Symantec Q&A for Windows. However, I no longer have access to any Q&A software.

Does anyone know of a small (and hopefully free) program that will convert Q&A documents to .txt files? Hoping for MS Word would be wishing thinking.

Thanks in advance.

I've read a lot of complaints about Windows 8, but mine ar?.superficial than most. The desktop's just ugly. I don't like.the square, flat, non-glassy look. I don't mind the menu, the controls, the apps ill never use. That's the main thing that keeps me go I.g back to Windows 7.
I've played with some free programs that add transparency to Windows but it's not much. Is there something to really make it pretty?

A:Windows 8.1 isn't not awesome, it's just lame.

There are some really great core security features about it, but I have to agree with you that it is a dog to use and irrelevant to most desktop users...

The funny thing is, that under most of the back to front and poorly thought out graphic user interface the control panel and functionality is mostly the same.

It's not even really different, they just broke it to make it seem special.

Here's hoping that they get it right with Windows 9 next year...

I have a problem with this pop up window that contains this certain message: Lame MP3 codec  V 0.9.2 - 3.99.5. This window shows up on certain sites like MLB.com and redsox.com, in particular. I cannot close the window, it doesn't respond and locks up the computer. It is very frustrating. It shows up nowhere that I can find on downloaded programs or when I search for it generally on the computer. I have read other fixes on the web and none of them have work or I just don't understand what they mean on how to get rid of it. I recently loaded a couple of DVD burner programs, but have since removed them and still have this problem. Can anyone help with this issue in a simple way? I am running windows 8 (which is horrible!) and I have an ASUS computer.
Thank you in advance for any help!

Try to disable the add-on from the Internet Options.
a.  Open Internet Explorer, press the Alt key and then click Tools.
b. Then select Internet Options. Click on the Programs tab and then on Manage Add-ons.
c. In the list of add-ons, select LAME MP3 codec and then click on Disable.
d. Press ok and restart Internet Explorer to check if the issue reappears.

I've never had this issue myself, but I'm assuming this will clear things up.

The games don't take too much space. But if you want to take it off anyways, go to this thread as they asked for the same thing

For sometime now I've had a prolem where if I click on a weblink that opens a new window nothing happens. I've disabled any and all pop-up blockers that I have and have searched through various settings in Iexplorer with no success. Any suggestions?

A:Lame problem with IExplorer

Hi there

Please go into Windows Explorer, click on C:\ > File > New Folder and call it HJK, or another name of your choice. Go to this site and download Hijack This. Install the program into the folder you created then run it. Click Scan. Save the log file to Notepad, then copy and post it back here. Make sure to include the System information at the top of the log as well.

I'm running XP, and well, I suppose that someone else who uses this computer fell fowl of 'Smart Defender Pro'

I've just spent the last two hours attempting to remove it, and it just keeps coming back. It's blocking every anti-virus program I throw at it.

I've tried Spybot, Malwarebytes and I'm currently running scans with COMODO and then with Spyhunter at the advice of a friend of mine.

I'd really appreciate some help with this, haha.

Virtually everyday I run across a post in a forum or a news article that complains about Win 8 and how the user does not want a phone/tablet OS on their desktop/laptop. IMO, this complaint is totally without merit.

I don't understand why those people can't accept that it is a DUAL PURPOSE OS, for those that want to use the features that are phone/tablet like they are there to be used or for those that prefer the desktop, it's available too. It's very similar to having a dual boot setup except that you don't need to reboot in order to switch between the two interfaces.

Instead of whining about it, accept that the two interfaces are there and deal with it. I use my Win 8 laptop everyday using the desktop and have not encountered any issues with that, Win 8 is like a very capable OS. I can switch back and forth between my desktop with Win 7 and my laptop with Win 8 and run the same suite of apps on both. For those that absolutely need the Start button, there are 3rd party apps that can be applied to bring it back.

Then there are those that whine that Win 8 is unusable on a non-touch screen. Baloney! I have been using Win 8 since the first customer preview on various machines, none of which have a touch screen and it is perfectly usable with a mouse/keyboard (yes, even the Start screen). I have never owned a computer with a touchscreen (and probably never will) but have tried them in stores and find that, instead of making things easier, the touchscreen makes usi... Read more

A:Anybody else tired of hearing these lame Win 8 complaints?

I agree wholeheartedly, with one correction! I think you could say it is a tri purpose OS - with or without touchscreen. If a user only wants to be in the desktop mode, it isn't a fantastic improvement from Windows 7, but certainly not worth all the whining.

Hey guys, just built myself this new shiny computer with an AMD 8120 processor, 8GB ram, plenty of storage and a decent graphics card.

It runs games, Photoshop, multiple browser sessions all at the same time, and I even upgraded to the cable companies fastest internet...

So why the BLEEP can I NOT get on Facebook?

Seriously across ALL browsers (especially Chrome which I've uninstalled and reinstalled) I get extreme slowdown or loss of connection ONLY with Facebook. I've pinged it and gotten very fast responses, but I cannot do ANYTHING on their servers.

When I was FIRST downloading software, a friend of mine used a program that allows you to install lots of recommended programs at once, he downloaded and used a "torrent downloader" program, and that is the ONLY thing I think could be causing some issue. I've used Ad Aware and tried to fix it, gone into incognito mode (which helps sometimes) and used other browsers, but somehow facebook still is slow.

Can anyone help?

EDIT: another strange issue, even though all my settings are correct I have to send email 3/4 times in Windows Live Mail before the server accepts it. I get a LOT of server not responding errors.

When I bought my latest new laptop I reluctantly became a Windows 8 user. I miss the utility I enjoyed in the XP Search function. The results of the XP (and earlier) Search showed pathnames for the files it found and showed them in a simple columnar list form. If uninterested in Size or File type, I could kill those columns to make room for longer pathnames. Win8 results take up many screens with icons in some searches and will allow simple viewing of contents or will bring up the saved file for changes if desired. I have not found any way to learn where I saved a particular file, and when I examine the contents and close the target, this lame application compels me to completely restart the search. Am I missing something or is there an alternate and more useful Search function somewhere? Thanks in advance.

I have downloaded Audacity, successfully, in order to copy tapes to the computer. I am now trying to export the music to a CD and the program keeps asking for a LAME file. I have brought up that website but cannot find the file it is asking for: LAME_enc.ddl. Cannot find it on the website, which, by itself, is very confusing. How do I find the file or what am I doing wrong?

Here's a direct link to LAME-3.96.1.ZIP, the DLL is part of the package. You just drop the DLL in the folder with Audacity.

So how do I do that? I have lame installed in my Audacity folder in Program files. I can look at the lame.exe and lame_enc.dll file properties, but I see nothing that tells me the version. Thanks.

A:How do you check the version of the lame encoder?

There may be several ways, but here is one:

Use Lame to encode an mp3. Then use a program such as Encspot, which will show you many properties of the mp3--including the Lame version.

I am using a program called Reaper for home music recording. It uses the LAME encoder to convert to mp3. I have no trouble downloading the application but when I try to install it I get a web screen telling me it can't find the .dll files needed to install. It gives me a list of registry cleaners and boosters to buy, but I have read those are dangerous and I don't want to use them.
Any ideas where to find the .dll files I need, or anything else to try?

Thank you

A:System won't recognize .dll extension for LAME

What is it that you downloaded? You just need to put the lame_enc.dll into the Reaper application folder.

I recently downloaded a vista codec pack from a popular website and installed it hoping to fix a minor problem. Problem fixed, another created (old story I know). Anything incoded in LAME 3.96.1 now has significantly lower volume. I have looked through the filters for a mixer to no avail. Is there a mixer/encoder that could help me adjust the volume for that code?

In XP I used to be able to right click the Start button as a way to check if the logged on user had admin rights. If I saw "Explore All Users" I knew the user had admin rights.

i'm using the Domain Admin account on a new machine and i'm trying to run my WSUS client fix batch file and its erroring out as if i didn't have admin rights

mind you, this is the first time i'm using W7 in a domain environment (finally was able to upgrade some boxes) so i feel back in n00b status as i never really had to worry about it at home (not knowing admin rights that is).

sorry if this has been explained elsewhere, but i suck at searching and didn't find anything.

i just want the cheap and cheesy way of checking for admin rights ala XP please!

thx
lv

A:Lame QotM: Easy way to see if user has admin rights?

with the new windows 7 machines come new group policy settings to manage "domain admin" rights on local machines... You'll need to either install server 2008 and DCpromo it OR... You can add the patch to a 2003 DC in order to complete the NEW GPO for the windows 7 machines.

or just manaully add "Domain Admins" through: (control userpasswords2)

I freshly installed Win 7 Pro 32-bit on Sunday and have been tweaking, installing, testing, and personalizing. So far, everything's gone perfectly until - of course! - my very last software app, Exact Audio Copy.

When converting ripped wav files to .mp3, EAC has the option of displaying a user-chosen external compressor window, in this case, lame.exe. Halfway through compressing a wav file, the Windows Console Host will crash and display an error message. If I click the "X" in the corner of the popup, the popup and compressor window will vanish and the compressor will resume work... until the next ripped wav file. Setting EAC to not display the compressor window does not crash the Console Window Host. I also have no crashes when using any other command window, most notably [email protected]

I've run sfc /scannow, full Avira, Malwarebytes, SuperAntiSpyware scans, and they're all clean. Event Viewer has an Error message, saying Event ID of 1000:

A:Console Window Host crash in lame.exe/Exact Audio Copy

I have a recording studio. However, for ripping CD's I use the free Audiograbber (and have Lame installed). It will rip to wav or MP3, and even Karoke CD-G's.

I've ripped marginal (scratched, etc) discs with Audiograbber (something exact audio copy says it will do).

This does not solve the problem with the program you are using, but an option. Audiograbber, free CD ripper, mp3 encoder and audio recorder for Windows

One other thing to consider, since you have a 32 bit OS, what other programs do you have open when you are running the exact audio copy? Too many applications open or running and it may be a (lack of) memory problem.

I run Windows 98, otherwise I'd have installed WMP 9 by now. I'm not getting any sound from WMP 7.1, and it won't play any CDs through it. I've uninstalled it because I'm disgusted with it and with the lack of help or knowledge/request for $$ from Microsoft's employees over the phone. They only refer you to vague article numbers on their site.

Real Player works just fine, in fact much better now that I installed cable modem. I just always liked WMP better.

Last night my registries got all messed up because I tried to watch a video through Quick Time (the worst!!), and I was in deep doo-doo for a few hours until I reinstalled Windows just to get my ethernet card recognized again...Quick Time totally & completely threw back all of my settings to old settings. But that's a different story. However, if anyone's had THAT particular problem, I'd love to hear about it, so I don't feel like the Lone Ranger over here.

Anyway...WMP 7.1. What's up with that? It acts as if I don't have a sound card or something by the error messages it gives. Nothing's muted, everything seems to be on the up-and-up, and, as I said, Real Player is working 100%.

I have the old-fashioned Windows Media Player in there now. Any advice or comments would certainly be helpful, and please -- layperson over here!

Thanks to all.

P.S. Much snow over here!

A:Malwarebytes gave me a pop up

Hello!!
I'm not understanding what's going on. I clicked on this and Malwarebytes said it was a malicious web site. Now it's been moved. Why are you moving a pinned topic and why is MBAM saying it's a malicious web site??
Please help me understand what's going on!! I'm confused and I don't understand.
Just to make sure you understand me.
I'm clicking on this topic (Windows XP Tweak Guide) a pinned topic and MBAM is saying it's a malicious web site. Now you have moved it and MBAM is sill saying it's a malicious web site???????????? Is this a FP??
I have never seen this before and I don't have a clue what's going on.
Why is my PC trying to connect to a malicious web site.
Please help me understand!! 84.16.235.152 This is a German IP address and MBAM says it's malicious.
This is very strange and over my head.

After attempting to configure Firefox 13 to run like all the other versions of firefox that I have used I gave up and reinstalled 12.

When I'd open a page and IE and it'd work better than Firefox, its time to go back. I'd have just used IE but would have to learn all over again. Just easier to use 12. Though with no Updates. So I will probably be peaking at IE to get a handle on it.

A:Gave up on Firefox 13

Well I will bite. What are you trying to get Firefox 13.0.1 to do that it won't do?
I have had it for about a week and still works the same as before when I had 12.

Hi i bought a new computer system recently for gaming, last month i think and it stopped working on me. Before i upgraded the system, the computer worked for years without breaking in its original e-machines configuration, but a month after i upgrade most of the parts, it breaks!

Systemspecs:
foxcon amd mobo
7600 gs
amd athlon 3700+
500w power supply
100gb and 20gb harddrives
1gb ram
windows xp

Last night the computer kept on stuttering on me, the fan kept on stopping and going again which would freeze my computer and i had to reboot or it would get out of being stuck and i could resume. After coming home i went to go boot up my computer and realized it would not work, the power button did nothing, nothing lights up nothing seems to work, any idea's?

A:New system gave up on me. help!

My guess is that the power supply is messed up. I have heard that the e-machine power supplies are cheap and tend to break, sometimes bringing down the motherboard.

Hi. This is a repeat problem, but I forget the solution.
My cd/dvd rom drive is not working.. light flashes off and on then quits.
Quite some time ago, someone sent me a link to a microsoft knowledge base.. there was some quick fix.. it deleted some file and then.. voila it was fine..
but it's happened again, and i didn't keep the link.. please help. thanks.

A:Cd drive gave up again

Here's a fix that works sometimes: go into the Device Manager, right click on the drive and select Uninstall. Reboot. This causes Windows to 're-install' the device which sometimes 'resets' its functionality. If this doesn't work, try booting to the drive; this will tell you if it's a Windows/software problem, or a possible problem with the drive itself. Have you tried the drive in Safe Mode? This can also tell you if maybe it's some type of software problem, or if it's an issue in the Windows 'core'. What about a system restore to a date before you noticed the problem? Or starting with the Last Known Good Configuration?

Hi,

We have a network with approx 20 users, we have setup a vpn so we needed static ip for our internet. Right now they all have static ip addresses that I have put in their computers. Is there a way for me to use a router to put a static ip in the router and then make the router give each user a DHCP private address (ex: 192.168.x.x) and they could still access the internet?

Greetings all. I'm using Windows 7 64-bit and I am running a full scan with Kaspersky PURE at this moment. I was logging off my hotmail when I saw the Kaspersky found a trojan called Componentprotocol.exe. After Kaspersky disinfected the file, a pop up balloon saying something about a dll file belonging to OneNote 2007 not being optimized for this PC. I tried to close it, but it kept appearing, and repeat to infinity. A few seconds later the boxes stopped appearing and I was treated to the BSOD. What should I do to fix this? It's been a while since my last visit here, so what log should I post and what should I use to get the log?

Like many others I was not to excited about the new windows 8. I particularly did not like the boot to the start screen and getting to some of the features that I was familiar with. Over the years having gone thru all the different operating systems ending up with Windows 7 Pro I was a happy camper.

A few weeks ago I bought a new HP desktop that was on sale but only came with Windows 7 Pro. Two weeks after receiving the new desktop I decided to take the plunge. I bought a new hard drive and installed windows 8, keeping the old drive just in case I wanted to go back. Initially, I was not to happy but I kept at it and was becoming familiar with the new system, but I kept going for the old start button. I even tried some third party software that gave me back the familiar desktop. My real acceptance of the new windows 8 came when I installed the 8.1upgrade. The new system in general seems to be very fast and has some new features that work very well with my old software. With a right click on the new windows button on the taskbar many of the programs that I use are back and the system boots up to the old desktop. So I am once again a happy camper. I should say that I have spent MANY hours over the last 10 days or so getting into the system and several times I thought about going back

Just thought I would pass on my thoughts.

A:I finally gave in to Windows 8.1

Good for you, it shows intelligence over stubbornness. Maybe you can post ways you overcome changes, it may help others new to win 8, 8.1.
P.S. Do something about your "Space" button, seems it doesn't work every time.

So, I am a relatively new user, new in the sense that I assembled the hardware I am using but really have no idea how the software works. This beast has worked fine for several years, but recently has been a little funny. A friend of mine fixed it once, but can't really remember how...something to do with a common Malwarebytes glitch.

Anyway. In the past few days it has more and more often taken to not loading, except in Safe Mode. At the advice of another forum, I went to C:\>Properties>Tools>Error Checking>Check Now, checked both boxes, and restarted. Hereafter, the Beast would not start at all, even in Safe Mode.

I went to the screen that gave me the Safe Mode option, and selected "Do not restart automatically"...this brought me to the following blue screen of death:
A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

...I used to use HouseCall when I was fixing my friends' computers, but have run Norton on my own PCs for years with no trouble. But it looks like both Norton & HouseCall have met their match because I'm having some odd problems with my PC and neither of them have helped. I've always shied away from HJT because Adaware has also never failed me... but fortunately when I went to Trend Micro's site to run HouseCall I saw that HJT was made by the same team... so I have a little more confidence in the product now. Anyway... on to my problems...

There's been a virus that Norton sees but I haven't been able to get rid of it for awhile because it's in a file I can't access. Norton's offline instructions didn't work, but my job requires me to travel almost 24/7 so I haven't had time to mess with this until now.

I took the drive out and connected it to my laptop (IDE to USB adapter) and tried to run a virus scan on it that way - but Norton was popping up with an error. The scan would hang and I was forced to reboot, upon which a chkdisk would run and find a ton of file errors to correct. I probably lost some files but no idea which ones as I don't know where the log file was saved to. Anyway, the workaround for the new Norton error is to reboot into Safe Mode and delete the virus definitions, then run LiveUpdate and re-download them. This worked for the laptop, but by then I'd put the hard drive back in the desktop... Read more

Ad-Aware found parts of it, said it fixed them - it's back. I ran the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool, it said it fixed it - it's back. I ran AVG Free, it found 5 different files infected with worm/generic/BANV and/or worm/Koobface.Y, it said it fixed it - it's back. It's getting slightly annoying.

It runs Windows XP Home SP3. Anybody willing to help me get rid of this... I can't call it what I want to call it, I'd probably get banned.

I would be happy to remove whatever is on their computer. I have a hard time writing papers on this computer because it clicks on a different part of my wordpad program rather than staying where is suppose to be. When it clicks, it cuts in a different sentence and gets on my nerves. Sometimes it deletes what i type and thats even worse when your typing a paper. Ever since I would have to deal with this I have to repeatedly press ctrl s to save and keep pressing undo command on wordpad for it o go back where i was typing. So this problem is time consuming. Also when I'm loading other programs it points somewhere else on my screen.
I tried to run malewarebytes and as always perform quick scan but its not picking up anything.

Sometimes when you rest your cursor wherever and start typing or using a program, it seems as if it keeps clicking on that spot but im not clicking anything. Majority of the time its clicking and clicking wherever u rest the cursor and clicking at random areas. Sometimes it would randomly move to another spot. I always have to keep the cursor away from everything so it doesn't press anything, but now forces the window to minimize and starts messing w/ u again.

This seems to be a bad year for laptops. The fans in my mother's laptop all failed, and now the fans in the laptop I use for light gaming and all of my other work seem to have failed. Last night, I noticed that the outer case seemed hot, but I thought nothing of it because it was running for a long time. Today, I tried a game, and it was running very slowly. Note that it usually runs very well. I installed speedfan... and all of the temperature readings besides the hard drive are saying 185 F. I also don't hear the fans running anymore. Is there any way to test the fans on this, and does anyone know how hard it is to replace them? The laptop is an Asus K53e (the same one with the power jack issues in the past).

First up, hi to all fellow 64 bitter's, (is there such a word?) --- well, never mind-- my experiences with migrating over to vista 32/64 so far, have been of a frustrating nature, and pretty much endless issues.

But i persevered over the last 3 months, and today i am happy to say i can use the OS properly for the first time, and to be honest i am overwhelmed with relief.

My problems began back in February of this year, when i purchased new hardware. My aim was to build a powerful gaming/HTPC.

I installed spybot, but it couldn't remove all of the spyware and viruses. And I installed combofix. That took care of the viruses I knew about. I ran the antivirus several times and It came up clean. My computer still runs slow. I figured I can live with it being a little slow. But I decided to to some more checking. I used an online antivirus scan.... it came up with a couple more viruses that I cannot find with the three items I have installed. (which is antivirus software, spybot and combofix.... Read more

Hello.  This account is being used by two people: the PC owner and a neighbor who is trying to help.  The PC owner had a cold call at the beginning of September which claimed to be able to tell that the PC owner was sending infected files.  A week later, the neighbor heard about this and recognized this as a tech support scam.  The neighbor was able to determine that the tech support scammer had installed the free version of AVG AntiVirus, but not much else.

The neighbor attempted to run a few free tools to find out if any malicious software was left behind, but due to problems with saving the logs or virus scanners apparently crashing, the neighbor and the PC owner never found any conclusive results for most of those.  The neighbor was following some advice given on a different forum to the victim of a similar scam (link), so dds logs have already been created, but the neighbor would rather have someone who understands them take a look at them.

The neighbor also ran TDSSKiller, but set to Verify Driver Digital Signature and Detect TDLFS file system.  No actions were taken to remove anything using this tool, but a TDSS file system was detected; we don't know what is on it, yet.

The scammers apparently used TeamViewer to access the PC owner's computer, and maybe LogMeIn Rescue.  An empty folder was left for LogMeIn Rescue, but program files remained for TeamViewer.  The neighbor copied... Read more

Boy do I feel stupid, I was having trouble with figuring out my new outlook email. I got frustrated looking online for information and called what I thought was a Microsoft tech help ctr. The person on the phone told me she would connect me with a tech. thru a chat window at chat123.us. I proceeded to follow prompts and began chat with the tech. the tech stated I was probably infected with third party spyware and my email was hacked.During the process the tech asked to check some things. she pulled up a command prompt window and started looking at my ip address, she also got my start-up window open. When done she said I was infected and showed me where. She said she could fix for a fee. Already suspicious I declined and logged off. I ran my avira free antivirus and it came up clean and my computer seems to be ok but I fear I may have compromized my system. What now?
Thank you, Jim

A:I gave someone remote access, am I infected?

From what I've read online that chat123.us uses LogMeIn Rescue to remotely connect to your
computer.

Link to LogMeIn: How LogMeIn Rescue Works: Remote Computer Support Solution | LogMeIn Rescue

QUOTE: With the customer's permission, this small .exe file automatically downloads to the remote PC. It's the interface through which technicians communicate with Customers and conduct remote support. The applet automatically removes itself from the remote PC at session conclusion.
The applet provides remote Customers with:
Interactive Chat and detailed Session History
Prompts to permit or deny technician access to all functions
File Transfer to the technician
Ability to stop Remote Control or disconnect at any time
You could do a search for LogMeIn on your computer to verify that it is no longer installed.

Teatimer just popped up that I gave permission for this to be a startup entry - but I don't think so!

I'm in my laptop on a hotel network. Run WinXPPro, Kaspersky, Teatimer, spyware blaster, webroot sometimes. Had to allow something the other day for the hotel network to let me log in from the room.

What have I done? Have I been hijacked?

A:cpqset - help! teatimer says I gave it permission!

Hi

I doubt you've been hijacked very much, no need to worry.

The cpqset.exe application is a HP laptop configuration tool, so based on your system white-list (known good) Teatimer would probably allow it when it asks to be put into the automatic startup folder. It's not harmful.

If you want to remove it, go to Start>Run>type: msconfig and hit Enter. Under the "Startups" tab find it and uncheck the box. Then choose Apply>OK. When it asks you to restart the system choose the other option. But the next time you restart, it will come up again and show you the msconfig box. Tick the box saying "do not show this message again" and OK. Cancel msconfig main window and don't choose the option to restart.

That should do it for a while, depending on when it tries to make access again. Usually until it's next accessed.

I have started this thread here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/337947/i-removed-antivir-solutionpro-but-getting-pop-ups/) and the moderator, boopme, has been kind enough to help me along this process so far. He has identified my post-Antivir Solution Pro virus problem to have evolved into a lurker. If you can read the short thread, I am still getting pop-ups directing me to malicious websites. One of the sites I end up on is a free scanner website which tries to download itself onto my laptop. I closed the download box and have been following the "preparation guide for use before using Malware removal". So far, I've completed using defogger and the dds program. I have both of the two text documents saved on my desktop. The problem I just hit now is using GMER. I was able to start the program and begin scanning, but after a few seconds my entire computer crashes with the blue screen of death. It happened twice and I tried again with GMER in safe mode. I got another crash. If you would like me to take any additional steps please let me know. I'm working with the nastiest infection I've ever encountered.I might as well attach the DDS text files.Merged posts. ~ OB

Hello. A problem has led me to look for a site and it seemed you had many capable people, so here I am for a first post.

Within the last couple of days I installed updates (updates, including service pack 2 and 3) to my computer and now I have a series of problems. Any advice about installing updates in the future to a machine that is working fine? Have done it for years without these kinds of issues. Among the updates was IE7. These are the series of problems, yet not limited to:

? My paid account hotmail no longer syncs with my Outlook. I tried using it with ?Express?; did not work either, asking for password and still not functioning.
? An error message which is not easy to get rid of: ciceroUIWndframe: iexplore.exe - application error.
? Pages do not load, as if they do not recognize a hyperlink has been clicked.
? If I try to watch a video link, and the source sends it to Windows video player, it acts up and may even stop, converting page to a white screen which has frozen
? The auto suggest window which causes problems appears.
? Pages freeze up and/or close completely.

I know I am not the only one with these issues, but I never saw any level of success with identical problems as I looked around the web so I thought I would ask you.

Appreciate your wisdom.

FYI: These problems are on my Vaio.
System Model: VGN-FE550G
BIOS Version: Phoenix Technologies LTD R0074J3

I thought someone could give me direction here, but no help; no comment. I figured every single issue out on my own and I learned so much.

My computer is back to working flawlessly, updates and all.

This is an edit. I just checked my player n it was off. I turned it on and it was fine, switched the transfer mode back to was it was b 4, plugged it in n it was normal. How did this happen though?

This is what happened. I got a Sansa mp3 player for christmas. It worked fine I installed the CD and transfered files normally, it worked fine. Today i decide to use the sansa micro SD expansion card. I put it in and the sansa info shows that its read the card because it says 240 megs free on the slot. I plug it into the computer and I didn't see a folders for the card because I wanted to put files on the expansion slot, I just saw the regular sansa folders. The sansa was in MTP transfer mode so i decied to put it on MSC mode. I dont know what that means. I plug it in my computer and instead of the sansa icon on mycomputer have two removable disk drives. This had something to do with the different mode i think. I unplug the sansa and its still in connected mode. It still is now, I can't even turn it off. When i plug it in it just charges and stays in the connected screen. I restart my computer and I got the red X at the bottom right corner. I check program files and a spysweeper folder was created at the same time of all this. I scan with norton and get no viruses. I delete the folder and restart and the X is gone. Computer seems ok now but im not sure why this all happened. Why would i get the red X from sansa or the expansion slot? My player is still in the connecte... Read more

Okay, so, this might be a drawn out, yet horribly indescriptive account of what happened, so please bare with me. My computer has always been a bit off, making odd funny noises and such. Recently, for reasons unknown to me, my power supply got burnt up pretty bad, so I bought it a new power supply. I also noticed something was up with the main fan, so I also replaced that, thinking that maybe the bad fan was the reason my old Power supply over heated in the first place. Ever sinse getting the new powersupply, everyonce in a while, like twice a day or so, My computer makes an odd (nothing new) yet very alarming sound (VERY new). Have you ever payed attention to the sounds your computer makes when it first boots up? How above everything else, for a few breif moments, something inside makes a loud high pitched whirring noise, which quickly dies down to the same low hum of the rest of the machinery? Well, sometimes (15 minutes after turning on, sometimes right away, maybe two hours later. There is no set time for when this happens) it will start making that noise while its already been turned on. Nothing to concerning in my opinion, but this is where it get weird. It'll stop half way through, then start again, then stop again, then start again, over and over again, until my whole computer freezes, or I turn it off in a stat of panic. Turning it off and letting it sit for a half hour or so usually works, and then i get back on, without any problems for a few more hours.
