Q: Trying to use multiple audio output devices

I'm trying to use my speakers for everything except one program. I want to use my headphones for a chat program called Ventrillo. any ideas or suggestions?

A: Trying to use multiple audio output devices

I've tried just about everything I could think of and still nothing. Tried changing audio output settings on everything and still cant figure it out. Anyone know if its even possible?

I'm not entirely sure if this is a Windows Sound issue or a hardware issue, so I'm asking this question both here and in a Windows Community Forum. Is it possible to output audio to multiple devices (i. e., can one assign more than one "Default Device")?  For example, can I output to the USB-S/P-Dif device connected to my stereo and the bluetooth device driving my outdoor speakers simultaneously? I have an Envy dv7-7255dx, with the IDT Hi-Def audio codec, running 64-bit Windows 10 Home. Thanks!

Under XP, when I played an MP3 it would come out of my headphones and my SPDIF port to my AMP at the same time. Under vista I seem to have to choose and keep changing them manually (setting one as default) . Also, when I change them, it doesn't seem to take effect till I restart that application, mp3 player, movie player or whatever.

I seem to have similar issues with mic vs line-in. and switching between them doesn't always seem to work if in use and Mute options also seem to not kick in.

I read some scare stories about DRM but I'm not sure that this is relevent or not .

In XP, this just worked. sound would go into the IN's and come out of the OUTs and could be muted where needed. Does this work differently now?

my computer's sound has stopped. I have searched through lots of websites looking for help.
I first noticed this problem when I tried to open iTunes and it came up with the message 'iTunes has detected a problem with your audio configuration. Audio/video playback may not operate properly'. I also cannot listen to music or things online either.
I have looked at my computer's device manager and can't find any catergory such as 'sound, video and game controllers', which one site suggested to try and check the sound card. I have also tried to update quicktime but that did nothing. I have also tried looking at 'sound' and under both the playback and recording columns it says that there are no audio devices installed. THis appears to be the common phrase along a problem with the audio configuration.
This has not ever happened to my computer before and I have had it for about 3 years now. It is a toshiba laptop with windows 7 home premium.
Please help guys, I am really frustrated.

A:Audio configuration no audio output devices?

If its not being detected at all in the Device Manager, it will not show up anywhere else.

When you boot up your PC, enter the BIOS (could be called "Setup") and check to see if the sound is disabled. If it is disabled in the BIOS it will not show up in Windows. If its showing as enabled in the BIOS, do a BIOS reset (to factory setup) and see if that makes a difference.

If its not disabled in the BIOS there is a chance the hardware has failed.

Running Vista on an HP laptop.  Volume icon now has a red X over it and I have no sound.  I went through all the common fixes including trying to download new audio drivers all to no avail.  Any ideas anyone?

A:No audio output devices installed

This is a common problem in Vista and unfortunately it is usually solved by reinstalling the OS. When you said you did all the standard steps, did you follow the steps here. Did you try a System Restore before the problem occurred?
To rule out a hardware failure you could download a small linux distro, Puppy 5.7 is good. Try playing a sound file. If you do not get sound in Puppy then I would say your internal sound card has failed. You may want to look at purchasing a USB sound dongle good for earphones only.

Apologies if this has been discussed elsewhere, couldn't find anything on the search.

I was wondering if there was any solution (Software or Hardware) to plugging in two audio devices (i.e. Headphones & Speakers) to a single Audio Card (I have Creative SoundBlaster X-Fi) and then having either a physical switch or a software solution to changing between which device outputs the audio.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

A:2 Audio Output Devices from 1 Card?

Do your speakers have a headphone jack?

You can also buy a splitter like this almost anywhere:
And turn off the speakers when you want to use the headphones.

You also need, or should use the Creative Audio Console to switch between speaker and headphone mode - note that switching between these modes does not mute the other device but switches to a multi-channel and separate headphone output mode.

Not sure this goes here, but in my research so far have found that Vista handles audio differently than previous Windows so here goes..

Running Vista Home Premium 64 bit on an ASUS P6T mobo with onboard audio that uses a SoundMax audio driver.
My old XP system detects my USB headset being plugged in and diverts audio out to the headset. On the Vista system I have to go into Sound from control panel and set the default playback device to USB headset in order to use the headset. Then when I am done with the headset I have to go back to control panel and set default playback to Soundmax.
Is there any way to automate this process? Sure seems like a step backward to me.

A:Switching between audio output devices ?

have you checked in control panel to see if the usb drivers are loaded correctly as it sounds like your usb port is not recognising or is not working try another usb device in the port try your headphones in a diffrent port on your comp to test both then check the drivers

There is no sound icon in the notification area? Did you upgrade to windows 7 or did you do a clean install? With doing an upgrade you can run into problems like this. It's just part of it. It's recommend to do a clean install and then install all updated drivers then install all the MS updates including any SP if available.

Just converted a friend's 2005 vintage Sony Vaio FS730 laptop XP system to Windows 7. Sony has no drivers for this machine beyond XP. Their available Vista drivers seem to be for different hardware.

The machine runs OK, but there are no sound output devices using the windows default installed "HD audio codecs." Using this driver there are no output sound devices found (disabled and hidden included) but the driver appears to function. Plugging headphones/speakers into the jack gives no sound and nothing from the built in speakers.

I've downloaded the Realtek drivers version 2.73, uninstalled the existing drivers, and installed twice, but get a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) after installing.

The hardware code for the device from msinfo32 components is
PNP Device ID HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_10EC&DEV_0260&SUBSYS_104D0000&REV_1003\4&10F4C67C&0&0001

Any clues or suggestions on getting audio functioning on this machine would be greatly appreciated.

In my device manager, the bluetooth audio is gone (it used to be there) and i also have many unknow device that related to bluetooth. I used to played with registry when i was trying to fix something else, maybe that the cause, but when i run the Sfc /scannow, notthing seems wrong. I have been searching solution for this problem for a month and yet, notthing works. Please help, im using sony vaio Model # SVS15116FXB. I also tried to download some drivers from the sony sites, but they are useless.

A:No Audio Output Devices is Installed- Sony Vaio

I would uninstall all the unknown and Bluetooth devices listed in the Device Manager. Leave that off until you get the basic sound going again. Restart the PC after uninstalling all the Bluetooth and unknown devices.

If the PC's sound device is enabled in the BIOS, Windows should detect it and install either the regular drivers or at least the generic, basic function, HIgh Definition Audio Drivers (Codec). If its not being detected and installed, the first thing is to check the BIOS. If its disabled in the BIOS then Windows will not see/detect it. If its enabled in the BIOS, reinstall the Intel motherboard chipset drivers. One of the things the chipset drivers do is define (identify) all the devices on the motherboard. This too affects whether the sound can be detected.

In device manager You've clicked VIEW/put a dot on Device By Type and you do not see Sound, Video and Game Controllers? And if you do see that and click its dropdown menu, there is no entry for Realtek High Definition Audio Controller? Where and how did you install the drivers then. Was realtek uninstalled by accident. Do you see anything in Control Panel as in Realtek HD Audio Manager??

I have three audio devices on my pc (ATI HDMI, Via HD onboard and steelseries usb soundcard) and through all devices I only get audio out of the left channel. I have tried two pairs on headphones and my tv speakers all with the same results. I have looked at all the balancing end everything is set to even on both channels.

Windows 7 X64 ultimate
M4A78 PRO Mobo Via HD audio
Steel Series Usb SoundCard

A:Audio Only out of one channel (multiple headsets and audio devices)

As you have three devices, each one separately generates the sound. The only thing common would be the sound itself, such as a wav or mp3 file.

When you use the PC's sound chip (VIA HD) that is one hardware device and the wired on the motherboard output jacks. If you use a USB connected sound device then you are using that device to generate the sound and that device's physical jacks. If you use the ATI HDMI, most video cards have their own built in audio chip (unless this is an old video card that uses S/PDIF connection to the motherboard) and thus again everything separate for audio generation and connection.

One comment, if you have both the Via on board audio and the usb connected sound card enabled at the same time there can be conflicts and sound problems. Not the balance problem you have but there can be problems. If you want to use the VIA then physically disconnect the USB. If you want to use the USB, disable the on-board audio in the BIOS.

Computers put out enough power to operate headphones or very small speakers. If you want to have speakers that play louder or higher quality you need to add an amplifier. If however you have a small set of speakers that are working well for you which are plugged into the computer directly just purchase a second set for outside and look at the ideas about switching below.
1) Speaker selection. Better speakers require more power. An amplifier can be built into the speaker. These so-called powered speakers therefore require either electricity from a wall socket to run the amplifier or batteries which you exchange your charge. For outside applications this need for power can be a nuisance. Also the audio signal to them is carried in cables which have RCA plugs on the end. There are switches which allow you to choose one or the other set of speakers. Sw... Read more

Buetooth issue with WINDOWS 7

I have been doing a lot of research on this issue, and have been unable to come up with a solution.

I have a BLUEETOOTH dongle attached to each of my 3 systems. I use BLUETOOTH as my default audio device The sound quality is great. (Far better than that of a laptop.)

I have a BLUETOOTH reciever attached to my stereo system, used for streaming PANDORA radio. I also have several other portable BLUETOOTH recievers, one of which I like to use outside on the deck.

Why is it that WINDOWS 7 only allows 1 audio device to be used at a time. I would like to stream audio to multiple BLUETOOTH devices, but WINDOWS 7 does not allow that.

When right clicking on the speaker icon to bring up "playback devices", only one device is allowed to be set as default! Also, if I want to pair with a second device, a pop up window tells me that I must first disconnect the device that is already paired, before I can pair a different device. Why is that?

If anyone out there knows a way to pair more than 1 BLUETOOTH device at the same time, and output audio to more than 1 device at a time, I would love to know the solution.

Thank you

A:Multiple Audio Output Selection And BLUETOOTH

Me too.

Have just bought 2 bluetooth headsets so my wife and I can listen to anything playing on the Media Center PC hooked up to the TV: Spotify, Media Center, iTunes, iPlayer, YouTube.

I'll have to send them back now and carry on using the infrared headphones plugged into the amp. Far inferior.

For some reason Windows 7 only allows one playback device at a time. What a silly and unnecessary restriction. Surely there must be a driver that can redirect the stream to multiple devices? Perhaps a registry hack to make Windows think that two devices are the same physical device by giving them the same ID?

I'm absolutely gutted that such an obvious requirement is missing from Windows.

hi, i'm relatively new here, so i'm not really sure how to do this but alot of my games are having problems i.e. ? has cause in invalid page fault in unknown. I am led to believe it is a soundcard problem, i use an onboard sound card with the VIA VT1612A 2-channel audio Codec and i look in multimedia properties under audio devices, i had two different ones, Audio for via Ac'97 Enhanced Audio Controller(WDM), and Audio for Vinyl AC'97 Codec Combo Driver (WDM), i was told by a friend to uninstall the drivers and then reinstall to fix this, i did, now on top of those two devices i have a second Audio for Vinyl AC'97 Codec Combo Driver (WDM). I also have three MIDI for WDM-based Device. ANd Mixer for VIA AC'97 Enhanced Audio Controller (WDM), along with two Mixer for Vinyl AC'97 Codec Combo Driver (WDM),this may be normal, but like i said i'm relatively new at this and it doesn't really look normal, so can someone please help me? Thank You

A:need help, multiple audio devices

Look at the back of your computer. Do you have onboard sound AND a seperate PCI sound card? If so then you need to disable the onboard sound in the BIOS setup and use only the PCI sound card.

Now go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall ALL VIA AC97, AC97, Vinyl audio drivers and anything else that looks like it goes to sound drivers.

Then go to Device Manager and uninstall/remove all remaining VIA/Vinyl/AC97 devices listed under the Multimedia heading. Reboot only after all are removed.

Then download the latest VIA Vinyl drivers. When you first run the new driver setup program it will look to see if there are still drivers installed, if it finds any then it give you the option to uninstall them. Do that and reboot.

Then run the VIA installation again and install the drivers, and reboot.

At any point Windows may redetect the sound card and want to reinstall the drivers - let it. Do NOT click Cancel on the Found New Hardware Wizard. If all goes well prior to install the latest driver the sound card should be detected as a PCI Multimedia Device and that means all the drivers will have been removed.

Here's the latest drivers:
They are in a ZIP file, once extracted you need to run the SETUP.EXE file to install the drivers.

Hi, I recently purchased a HP Pavilion dv6974 Laptop, it came installed with Vista 64-bit. It works fine and all, just one thing I want to figure out.

The laptop has built-in speakers, a built-in mic, 2 headphone jacks and 1 microphone jack. I plugged my headset into one of the headphone jacks, my headset microphone into the microphone jack, and my external speakers into the second headphone jack.

What I wish to do is to set it up in a way that I can play music through my speakers, and Ventrilo through my headset.

The way I did this before on my desktop was that there was this option in the Realtek Audio Manager called "enable playback multi-stream" that separated the two audio jacks on the computer (one in the back, and one in the front). Then I was able to choose a different audio driver for Ventrilo, and use the default one for music. This was on XP, and I only had one sound card btw.

And now for Vista, I've tried looking through the Audio Device Manager and the Realtek Audio Manager but couldn't find anything that would help much, except in the Realtek Audio Manager there's this "tie up all input jacks something something, etc" that sounded like it was what I was looking for, but all it did was mess up my microphone.

To add more to this confusion, there is actually another audio device in the Audio Device Manager, but it's the Digital Audio Receiver, and I don't really know what that does.

I've asked about this problem elsewhere, and some peopl... Read more

I'm not sure whether what i want to achieve is possible, but here s my objective. Having just got into music streaming from my Windows 7 pc, using Firefox as browser and Deezer for the music i wanted to achieve multiple room listening rather than just listening from the stereo speakers attached to the pc. So, i've plugged in a bluetooth usb adapter (Advent, with EDR) and connected up a harman/karman BTA10 bluetooth adapter to the hi-fi in my living room and purchased a Minx Go (Cambridge Audio) portable wireless music system speaker. To my great relief all installed successfully and all the devices play - but only individually.
The question therefore is can i, and how do i go about adjusting the computer audio settings to have music playing simultaneously via the hi-fi in the living room, the pc connected speakers in the back room and the portable Minx bluetooth speaker?  When i looked at Control Panel and then 'Sound' i've found how to change the default playback source between the items listed, but can't see how i can get all the items to play music from Deezer at the same time for that multi-room sound experience.
I'd appreciate any help you can give, and in simple steps because i'm no computer techie!

A:Is it possible to create simultaneous audio output from multiple speakers?

I can say that overall it is possible to do…maybe not with your specific hardware setup. For example, if you are using a system using AirPlay to stream (i.e. Airport Expresses connected to speakers, other computers, iOS devices, AppleTV), then iTunes music can be streamed with to multiple locations with no additional software. I have such a setup. If you want to stream non-iTunes content, then you can use a third-party program called Airfoil to stream that other content. Now, obviously, unless you want to switch gears to an Airplay system (or something else, the above does not seem to help much.Where is helps is that maybe there is some other third party application that can do something similar for your situation. You might see if this helps:

I've googled this endlessly with no result and I'm guessing it isn't possible but I may as well ask.

My laptop has one audio/mic port. I'm cheap and had a splitter laying around, my headphones, and a set of ear buds with a mic on it I combined to use as a headset.

This works fine, however, since the sound output is being split to both my ear buds and headphones, it doesn't sound as good and some things are faint, which isn't good for gaming.

Is there a way to manage my audio devices so that my ear buds is mic only and no sound, and my headphones get all the sound? I've found no options in Windows, just playback (speakers) and recording (mic). I assume because it's only one jack it isn't, but it can't hurt to ask.

I'll try to explain this as simply as possible... Currently, I have speakers, headphones and the headphone microphone plugged in. I'd like to record my Skype conversations using stereo mix, but stereo mix only picks up what goes through my speakers and not what goes through my headset. I've tried tinkering with the settings and haven't been able to get stereo mix to record what goes through my headset instead of my speakers.
How do I get stereo mix to record headphone audio instead of speaker audio?

For the past few hours, I've also been trying to get Audacity to record both stereo mix and my microphone. From what I've read, Audacity can't record two inputs at the same time, so is there a way to combine stereo mix and my microphone?

I'm using the latest Realtek HD drivers, if that helps any.

Thanks for your time.

Hi guys. I have my TV connected via HDMI through my video card to my computer and also run sound through my computers speakers with the onboard sound. Normally I just change the audio device before opening a program depending on whether I want it on the TV speakers or computer speakers. The problem is that sporadically when I select the device for the TV speakers it doesn't provide any sound and no combination of turning the TV on and off, changing the audio device back and forth etc will let give sound on the TV speakers (but when i change to the computer speakers it works fine). I can't seem to reproduce the problem either, it just happens sporadically and the only solution is to restart the computer.

Hi, I very much want to know the answer to this problem. My setup is simple. I am working with my Mobo's onboard sound card (Mobo is Asus M3A32-MVP Wi-Fi) and here's the thing. I see multiple devices in both Vista and Seven (have a dual boot) - I see the front headphone jack, the SPDIF, the rear audio port (it's 5.1 surround) and also an HDMI. I've just recently bought two bluetooth headphones and I have paired them and see them in the audio devices panel too.

Now this is what I want to do. I want to hear the audio on all the devices simultaneously. If I turn on the audio system (connected to the SPDIF) then I should hear the audio there. If I connect multiple Bluetooth headphones, I should hear the audio from my comp on any and all of them.

So, why can't I do this? Apparently this was the default behaviour for Windows in XP. That is, any audio played was available on all connected devices. Now, here in Vista and Seven we have a major downgrade in that we have to select a SINGLE audio output device as the "default" device and when a device is selected as such, the audio stream is SOLELY passed into it. THIS IS SO VERY WRONG! It is so illogical to do something like this in today's world of changing and evolving multi-media environments. I mean, what if my Mom wants to hear my music from the kitchen at the same time that I'm listening to it as I work on my desktop. She should be able to simply plugin and start listening to what I'm hearing! This is RIDICULOUS!

I've been stuggling with this for a few hours now and am at the end of my wits..

I've got one plug connected to the back panel, and one to the front. But one always cuts off the other. In my sound devices, the system registers them both as: "speakers, VIA High Definition Audio, Standard device"

Is there any way that I can connect them both at once, and still have both of them outputting audio?

I hope the internet will save the day!

Many thanks in advance!

The product drivers install correctly without error. However, instead of showing up in the Device Manager in either USB Controllers or Sound Controllers they both show in Other Devices with a yellow exclamation mark.
I have tried the following fix from this site (USB Driver - General Fix for Problems) and this actually enabled me to access a portable HDD that wasn't working, but it didn't fix the issue for my 2 audio devices.
I have also tried right clicking on the devices in Other Devices, selecting Driver Update. I then find the correct drivers listed but when I hit install I get the following error message on both:
"Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it. One of the installers for this device cannot perform the installation at this time."

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

A:Audio USB Devices showing under Other Devices in Device Manager

Could it be the two devices are competing with each other and the driver installer gets confused? Details on the devices and the needs to use two of the same type probably would be helpful.

Just wondering if anybody could help me.

I have Vista Home Premium 64bit and also a Creative Soundblaster Soundcard.
I was wondering if you can output different applications to the different devices?
i.e. Speakers for Music and Game through Headphones.

Some applications have this feature in the software. i.e. Propellerheads Reason 4.0 allows you to chose the Output device of the sounds in the preferences menu.

If anybody can help, appreciate it.
Can't think what else to say but it you want to know something that could help just ask me

A:Output Different Applications to Different Devices?

I've never actually tried this but it might be achievable by going to your playback devices and setting them to 'allow applications to take exclusive control'.

In your playback devices be sure to have both your headphones and speakers enabled.

Depending on which of your applications can choose a dedicated output you will either have to do one of the following:

if the game you play allows you to select headphones, do this and set your speakers as default audio device. your game should 'take exclusive control' of your headphones while your mediaplayer plays normally on your speakers.

if the media playback software allows you to select speakers, do this and set your headphones as default audio device. your media player should take exclusive control of your speakers and your game plays normally on your headphones.

If this doesn't work try looking for solutions on creative forums.
If it is possible with the creative drivers/programs surely you should be able to find out on their site(s).

Good luck!

I'm using an Asus P7P55D-E LX Motherboard, I've recently switched to Windows 7 from XP. When I was on XP I was outputting sound through my motherboard's Optical Cable to a surround sound system, but I also had a pair of headphones connected into the headphone jack of the motherboard, both received sound at the same time.

It would seem I can't do this, at least not with the default settings of Windows 7? What gives? I can only set one default, I can't seem to make sound come out of both... this is very inconvenient.

A:Can't output to two devices now on Windows 7?

Windows will only allow one default audio playback device, as you have found out. I've heard there are some (pay for) software that will get around this but I've never seen or used it.

I've taken myself the challenge I've been avoiding for some time, creating a plattform for connecting a radio to your computer through the USB port.

So basicly I need to know if there is anyone here with any knowledge in this field who wants to answer a few questions, or if there is anyone who knows where to direct those questions...

The most important question would be how the signal has to be converted to be put through the USB connection. Followed by how to create the drivers needed to get the computer to understand these signals as soundsignals.

I'd greatly appreacitate any help, as I'm guessing it's not anything usual I'm asking about

A:input and output for USB devices

My question would be, what are you trying to do? Are you trying to record the radio output into the computer?

USB connections are for Hardware. So you're saying that you want a radio to become a piece of hardware? Could you clarify?

Both work fine, but, for reasons too complicated to go into here, I'd like to have programs output their sound through both simultaneously.
Anyone know if this is possible? If so how??
Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Hey guys, first post, got a bit of a problem I need to solve asap for my work, I really hope someone good with telnet reads this...
2 main problems:
Some switches accept my username and password but do not output anymore.
Others let me log in ok, and run commands, but output weird stuff. Some give me the output from my command at the end, but some do not, and thats my problem.

For one of our customers, we support all their LAN in their datacentres around the world. Some 200 switches roughly. About 2/3 are HP (not all the same) the rest are Cisco. We can access a terminal server from which we can telnet to all of them.

Due to frequent changes in hardware etc, we need to have a back-up of the configurations of all of these switches, but until now we've had no way to do this except manually one by one - but we need this to be done daily.
My Project

I tried using Plink (command line of Putty) however it cannot seem to pass credentials to login via telnet. Ive done the same thing before using Plink for devices which use SSH and it works fine, but not telnet.

We didnt want to buy Kiwi Cat Tools for reasons unknown to me.

So I have written my own Telnet Client using C# to do this, and it works a treat. It spools up a background worker for every switch and each background worker opens a socket to each device simultaneously and works by reading from and writing to the network byte stream.
The methods im using work perfectly for all but 6 of our HP switches, a... Read more

I'm having a strange problem in my HTPC. Audio is coming perfectly fine out from the S/PDIF coaxial output, and it's normally connected only that way to the receiver, but now for other reasons I also need to connect it using a 3.5 mm to a small mixer. So in the sound manager I changed the output to the "Speakers", and in fact the Realtek sound manager detects that a cable is plugged into that output and shows me the dialog where it's selected. Problem is, nothing comes out.

I know it's not the 3.5mm to RCA cable because I plugged in my phone, played some music and I can hear it just fine. But the rear speaker (green) output puts out no sound at all, as I also tested it plugging headphones. On the Sound Windows panel where you can select the playback device I can see the volume level move up and down when I'm playing any media file, as well as in the Volume Mixer. If I switch back to the S/PDIF output and change the input in my receiver, audio is coming just fine.

I haven't tried the front outputs because they are not connected. The motherboard has HD Audio but the case has AC97 connectors, so I never cared to connect them because I don't use them. I know the rear green output worked at some point because I remember having a pair of computer speakers connected to it a few years ago.

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium on my Dell Inspiron E1505.

I have had no problems with it for several years; however, recently my computer has booted with a red 'X' on my audio and tells me that "No Audio Output Device is Installed." I checked my Drivers and my High Definition Sound and 2 Base System Device drivers have Yellow Question Marks by them. I tried to update the drivers manually but it says Windows Cannot Find Support for your Base System Device and it says my High Definition Audio is already up to date. I have also tried uninstalling the drivers and rebooting Windows to let the system automatically search and update the drivers. This too has failed. I do not have my Windows 7 disc available at the moment to be able to do a clean install.

No sound.
Little speaker with the red 'x' appeared yesterday
I have gone through the whole update drivers circus to no avail, my laptop can't detect that it has speakers built in so it doesn't bother finding a driver for them.

This is where I am at:
- Intel Display Audio is the only driver installed for sound
- This means that sound works when the laptop is plugged into an HDMI
- When HDMI is not plugged in, the computer cannot find the built in speakers.
- I have Linux on this system and audio does not work there as well

I would call this a broken chipset, but the fact that the computer still processes audio with the HDMI cable attached is confusing me. Also, the 'audio board' for this laptop has 2 usb ports attached to it, and those both work fine.

Any help would be appreciated

I shut down my computer using the power button on the front. It started booting up, I could hear the fans and the hard drive, but nothing turned on. The keyboard stayed unlit and the monitor didn't even come on. It's like nothing is getting any power. I'm starting to freak out a little bit....

Hi guys,
I'm having a little problem with my onboard audio, having just installed Windows 8.1 (clean install). I have an Asus P8Z77-V LE PLUS motherboard, which includes a "Realtek? ALC889 8-Channel High Definition Audio CODEC" onboard.
I have installed the latest realtek drivers; R2.73 from the official website.
Now, here's my problem: when I was using Windows 7 on this same machine, I could plug headphones in the front panel connector, as well as speakers in the green back panel connector. This would give me two audio outputs in the device manager/sound list, which was pretty practical and enabled me to output different applications through the speakers or the headphones.
Now, however, there's only one output, irrelevant of whether or not I have two outputs plugged in at the same time. They appear in the device manager as a single device called "speakers" (see picture). Instead of both having separate outputs, they both output exactly the same audio.

Any solution to this?

A:Realtek HD Audio only shows one audio output at a time

Hello audiobreak,

Try going into the Realtek HD Audio Manager (Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Realtek HD Audio Manager), then look for a setting called 'Make front and rear output devices playback two different audio streams simultaneously'. I cannot remember where this is located (The Realtek HD Audio Manager has different skins depending on the motherboard vendor), but for an ASUS Motherboard, I believe you click the Cog Icon in the top left and the option should be in there. I don't know if this will create a separate Playback Device for the Front Panel in Window's Playback Devices, but it will at least allow you to hear audio from both your speakers and headphones at the same time.

Hope this helps.

Im having the dreadful "No Audio Output Device is Installed" problem on my realtek audio.

It worked some months ago, but im in no position to do a roll back. Im sure the hardware is just fine, it works with Ubuntu.

The computer is a Dell Vostro 430.
My OS is win7 64bit.

I tried the newest Realtek driver suite, the recommended dell-drivers and some basic windows-drivers. Nothing makes the "No Audio Output Device is Installed" go away.

Any help is welcome.
Ive attached my sound-related reg. I believe my realtek device is 0001.

A:Realtek Audio: No Audio Output Device is Installed

The Dell driver is required, non Dell drivers will either not work or not work correctly.

First thing, is the Integrated Audio enabled in the BIOS? (F2 at boot up to enter Setup).

Second, on Dell's (and many others) if the motherboard chipset drivers were not installed, the sound device will not work. In this model there are Intel motherboard chipset drivers. Try installing them and then the Dell sound driver. Dell Drivers

My computer has recently begun having issues with sound, and I believe it comes from installing Battlefield 3. The problem that has arisen is that the computer will detect sound devices and applications are present in the volume control panel.
The issue is that no applications produce any sound at all, the sound bars do not move in the volume mixer, under sound in the control panel or inside any creative software. Most applications do run still but some like Windows Media Player can simply not play any files that contain audio, a restart does fix the problem for a while but eventually it reverts back to this state.
A friend of mine shares the same problem and it started around the same time as he installed Battlefield 3, he also has the same sound card as me. He has tried reinstalling drivers, games, Teamspeak and his only solution was to do away with his sound card, I have only had mine for a week and I don't want to waste the money.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

About 6 month's ago I reinstalled my OS and all my software, shortly thereafter I noticed I had an issue where any sound that was coming through my headphones was being retransmitted through the mic, with further testing I found that this was not actually the case but rather any sound that would be output is being retransmitted as audio in, even if I had no speakers, headphones or mics connected. I have looked at and experimented with everything I could in every sound settings I could find, but nothing has fixed the issue.

Before anyone asks, I have tried updated drivers, the only way for me to stop the issue from occurring is to mute the mic in the recording control, but that stops me from using the mic altogether.

Please Help I need to be able to use my mic without recording anything that I am hearing as well...

Alright here's my situation:

I have a Core2Duo PC running Vista Home Premium 32 bit, hooked up to my TV using a HDMI cable. This has been working fine for 2 years now. Yesterday I decided to add some more RAM to this PC (4 GB instead of the standard 2 GB to be exact). I know 32 bit will only read 3 GB but I was thinking of upgrading to Windows 7 64 bit later.

Anyway I booted up the computer, worked fine of course, even watched a movie or two without problems. Then this morning I booted up the PC and I suddenly noticed the volume icon saying that there were no audio devices detected! I checked under Hardware and there are no audio devices whatsoever! So my HDMI cable is still giving me picture but no sound! Seeing as I'm using onboard audio I immediately booted into the BIOS and although I couldn't find a specific option that said onboard audio I did see something audio related being "HDA" (I assume HD audio) on automatic, the other option was ACRealtek97 or something. However it was enabled so no luck there.

Does anyone know how all of a sudden my HDMI cable isn't providing audio anymore? I even checked my Nvidia card which also stated that HDMI audio was enabled.

I hope anyone can help me, thanks in advance.

I'm gonna try and lay out my problem very simply, and then tell you what I have tried/done.

PROBLEM: When I plug in Headphones, I can not hear anything, and in the playback devices, nothing is shown to be plugged in. This goes the same for my other audio device which is a bose sound dock (for ipod but I connect using a 3.5mm to 3.5mm cable)

Okay, so here goes. When I first build the system and installed windows, i wasn't thinking much of the sound as i was installing updates and video card drivers and what-not. I did, at some point, connect the bose to the computer using the 3.5mm jack on the front panel of the computer. It worked fine, I heard the little sounds the computer makes when logging on. Since then I have had troubles with my network card and ran windows update and various other things.

Now no sound works at all. When I realized this I tried:
-Changing the actual front panel cable that is connected to the mobo from hd audio to ac 97 (and changing the setting in the bios)
-Searched for many hours online trying many different solutions such as:
-updating drivers
-rolling back drivers

Other things i've tried:
-system restore
-update bios
-install audio drivers from mobo disc

I have moved past being extremely frustrated and I now just dont know what else to do.

I would greatly appreciate any feedback what so ever :)

Our ISP recently updated their hard ware to work with the Sprint network. Note: our ISP is not Sprint, but the local phone company.

Our Hardware:
Internet: DSL 10.0 (highest speed available)
Modem: Comtrend (ISP provides)
Router: Belkin N
Computer: 10 yr old Dell running XP - service pac3 - wired connection
Kindle Fire (first edition, no HD, etc) - wireless connection
Xbox 360 - wireless connection

Xbox - went from constantly bumped from Xbox Live game by losing internet connection to not being able to enter a game at all
Kindle - went from occasional "network error' message during online tasks to having to restart download (multiple times) or refresh page for most any or all online tasks
Computer - have to click refresh to get most any page to load after the home page

What we've tried so far:
I have recently cleared the cache on both the computer and Kindle. XBox's new security measures have been met.

My questions:
Do any or all of these issues seem to be related?
Is there a piece of equipment or something we may be missing to make all of these things work? I am a networking novice.
Who should I call to get these issues corrected, my ISP or a tech service? Note: if I start with the ISP and they do not find an issue I have to pay for the call.

A:Multiple issues over multiple devices

First. You should try to NOT use a wireless connection for any type of gaming: PC, Mac, Console, etc. If you can hard wire the xbox you'll be waaay better off than using wireless.

Now... Yes, the issues could be related - there maybe an issue with the Belkin N router. I'd try to first reset the Belkin router to default settings, check on manufacturer website for instructions how, most routers you can press a "reset" button w/ a paperclip or ball point pen. Reconfigure the Belkin router, recreate the wireless network and see how everything works. If you are still having issues, humor me and connect the Dell directly to the DSL modem, bypassing Belkin router. See if you still have connection issues, if you do then it could be the DSL modem that is the problem and call your ISP to replace. If you don't have same issues then it's most likely an issue with the Belkin router. Replace it. Don't buy the dirt cheapest router at the store, but you most likely don't need the most expensive one either. Find a good middle ground router, ask sales associate to assist you accordingly.

Post back, Hope this helps!!

Hi there,

first i'll give ye the spiel about my laptop audio setup

I spilled a pint of vodka and blackcurrant all over the keyboard a few years ago, all this has damaged is how my speakers work (despite the wireless card and under the keyboard being covered in sticky sugar crystals)

(a) the two embedded speakers emit faint crackling when music is played at max volume.
(b)the embedded subwoofer works fine
(c) the headphone socket only works when a jack is inserted halfway in a very particular manner (giving audio to one desktop speaker only)

I've been using cheap "Trust SP 2750p" stereo usb speakers for the last few months (not interested in spending money on a proper external soundcard setup)

My question is: Can I configure windows or some application to allow audio playback through the usb speakers and the laptop speakers simultaneously? The internal subwoofer is pretty powerful and should sound quite nice combined with the usb speakers at reasonable volumes.

I've tried googling this but to no avail

Realtek AC97 soundcard, Acer 2003 wlmi,

TL;DR version:

Is there a windows xp config or software available that'll allow me to play audio through my usb speakers and internal laptop speakers simultaneously?

many many thanks if you can help me out

Look for audio drivers on the motherboard CD delivered to when after purchasing your system. If you can't find it or don't have mobo CD around, navigate to manufacturer website and download driver for audio device from there.

Good luck!!

I think I am the victim of the recent "bug" that used the animated cursor in Windows to react with RealTek AC'97 audio and it's driver. I have no audio at all...The speakers and microphone are not recognized by the OS,...the "new hardware" is not being found. All the drivers and codecs are up to date and I have tried Soundman and no avail...Any ideas from anyone.?...Please...

I have searched the forums and was not able to find anything on this issue.

windows media player will not display any video on secondary screens. I have a computer hooked up to a network of display outputs and when i tried to show a video it would play on the computer but the outputs (which showed everything else on the screen just fine) would just have a blank area where the video was supposed to be playing. sound worked fine.

My found temp solution:

WMP will only play video on the primary display device, It will not even let me toggle in between display devices while WMP is running. If i change the display device to my secondary screen (main laptop screen is now blank) and reopen WMP the videos will work as they should.

full solution endstate: display video on both primary and secondary screens simultaneously.

other info: unfortunately, there is a class being taught with said computer using temp solution, so i am unable to get WMP version. it is on an XP machine.

all help is appreciated.

A:WMP multiple display output

If you have ATI Catalyst Control Advanced there is a place in the settings for the form of vidieo playback you want on a secondary display (same as 1st, full screen, etc.). There might/should be something very similar for Nvidia as well.

If not however or maybe in spite of these settings correctly set, it doesn't work and if there is no other problem its a video acceleration problem which you can force by going to Display settings/Settings/Advanced/Troubleshoot and set the hardware acceleration to about 50% first and restart the player and see if it works. If not, set it all the way off and it should work if your system is capable and has no other problem. You will lose some other minor functionality in the video subsystem so its only a temporary solution. Definitely see if the Control center settings solve the problem first.

Hi to all.

On my Dell OptiPlex 755 E6550 2.33, I've had intermittent issues with the headphone socket suddenly stopping working for quite some time, sometimes problem is auto detected and fixed, sometimes I download a driver or three to resolve. This time nothing is helping no matter what drivers I've tried. Have Win 7 Ultimate installed with just on-board sound. No sound or audio shows up in device manager? Are 755's fickle with on-board sound or just too many sound drivers installed? Any ideas please.

A:Dell OptiPlex 755 No Audio Output device and no Sound/Audio in Device Manager

There could be multiple hidden audio devices.
* Press windows key + R* Enter cmd, click OK* Type cd\ [press Enter]* Type set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1 [press Enter]* Type devmgmt.msc [press Enter]* Once the Device Manager opens, open Sound and see if you have multiple grey out items. If yes, delete them, then restart the computer and retest

I'm running a Dell XPS 420, which came with Windows Vista. I decided this morning that I was going to give Windows 7 a try, backed up some media on another PC, and did a completely fresh install.

Everything worked perfectly, I didn't even have to install any drivers. My native resolution was automatically correct, the sound worked, the internet worked, everything was dandy. It worked perfectly, and for the record, I really enjoyed it. I used it for several hours, getting used to the new features and whatnot.

I went to sleep for a few hours, and then went out for a while. When I came back, the sound had stopped working. It gave me no error at the time, it just didn't work. WinAmp wouldn't play my MP3s, Youtube videos were without audio, system sounds weren't playing, and yet, the volume was enabled and at an audible level of 67. My speakers were still connected properly, too.

I figured maybe a reboot was in order, and when I restarted, there was no sound still. Now, however, the speaker taskbar icon had a red x next to it, with the words "No Audio Output Device is installed." on the tooltip. I rebooted again and there was no change.

Using the Windows 7 trouble shooter, it says that "Hardware changes might not have been detected."

The odd thing is, this has happened to me before with Windows Vista. I wanted to perform a clean re-install of Vista, and when I did so, the sound worked perfectly for a few hours, before going out again. I would re-install Vi... Read more

A:Audio stops working, "No Audio Output Device Installed"

Hi filmtrauma, welcome to the forums.

While you have been asleep, Windows Update may have installed a new Sound driver for you which may have caused this error. Open Windows Update and click 'View Update History'....

You could try downloading the latest drivers from the hardware manufacturer, a lot are now supporting Windows 7 too..

Also, is your sound hardware plugged in (to the motherboard) securely? It's rare but i've dealt with some cases of hardware coming loose, might be worth a look. Another thing to check may be the temperature of the card, it may be getting overly hot due to a dust build up (might not be, i'm not 100% up-to-date on all sound hardware).

Hope this helps

Hey guys,

I just went out and bought a mic from bestbuy and I plugged it in, I had a small bit of trouble getting the headphones to work, but eventually got them working.

Now I am having trouble with the microphone part of the headset. It is plugged in properly to the back of the computer in the correct jack, but for some reason under "Recording" it is giving me the message of "No Audio Devices Are Installed."

I have no clue what to do and was wondering if anyone out there could be of assistance to me?

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time!

A:Devices>Recording: "No Audio Devices Found"

I just plugged in my old headset which IS a USB headset and it recognizes it but I am unable to speak, I dont know if its because the mic doesnt work anymore or if its another problem.

My new mic is NOT a USB headset, it has two different plugs, 1 for the headphones and 1 for the microphone jack in my computer. So is it because of that feature that my computer is unable to recognize the new microphone?

We have an Audio Visual suite with multiple PCs connecting through a switch box to a plasma screen TV.

Each PC has it's own NVidia Geforce 7200 with dual output: one outputs to the PCs local monitor. The other is an output to the switch box and plasma screen.

The problem we have is that the graphics cards won't output a mirrored desktop to the video switchers unless: firstly the switcher is set to that PC's channel, and then you enable the mirrored desktop in the graphics card control panel (that is per session). We want the cards to output to the plasma screen from the moment the PC is powered on. NVidia drivers installed are currently 1.4.13.

In effect we want the cards to output on BOTH heads from system startup... this maybe a hardware or firmware issue I guess...

Can anyone advise please?

A:Multiple Monitors, Sound output limited to one?

You can only have one default audio playback device, as you have found out. Although there may be, I have never seen anything posted on getting around the Windows limitation.

But, what you could do is use the Analog sound card's output and then split it externally, to whatever devices you want.

Hi guys,

I want to ouput the results of multiple queries to different sheets in the same excel file. The docmd.transferspreadsheet method works great except that if a user makes any changes to the file and saves it, the changes save, and the next time the user triggers the event for the ouput query the command doesn't overwrite the previous changes and the file contains the previous changes made as well. While the docmd.outputto command doesn't allow the user to makes changes and even if the user does the next time you run the command it overwrites the changes the user made....i want something like that with the added benefit of being able to output multiple queries to an excel sheet...
This is what i have as of now:

DoCmd.TransferSpreadsheet acExport, acSpreadsheetTypeExcel97, _
"Order Subtotals", "C:\Sales.xls"
DoCmd.TransferSpreadsheet acExport, acSpreadsheetTypeExcel97, _
"qrySalesByCountry", "C:\Sales.xls"
Call OpenSpecific_xlFile("C:\Sales")

Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas?? would be much appreciated!!

I have an Asus p5n-d mobo and have assembled it into my computer, and everything works, except for my speakers. I have tried them on my laptop and they are fully functional, but none of the audio... speaker holes work.

I am fairly sure where the front panel plugs should be connected to the motherboard (in the southwest corner, cpu being center north), and there is a set of 9 pins, like this
a b c -- e
a b c d e (for reference)

I have two setups for the pins in my booklet that came with my mobo
there is an Azalia-compliant pin definition, and a Legacy AC 97-con pin definition. I don't know what this means.
There are charts for the pin definitions, however they do not match the front panel cord sections.

Next I restored my pc to an earlier date when the audio was working, also didnt help.
I have checked that sound is enabled in the BIOS, nothing.
Please help as I cant even reinstall windows 7 due to my DVD drive also being broken.

Best thing to try is do a system restore to the date previous to your update, if that produces sound then do not update your windows update with that update. It's not well known but there are updates than can mess with your system settings (not intentionally)

I've read dozens of topics relating to these questions yet have found no answers. I'm looking for a software solution NOT hardware.

1. How can I record the Windows 7 Text 2 Speech voice?

2. How can I playback the recording through a program(WMP, MPC, etc) and have it go though the mic instead of speakers? Pretty much I want the text to speech to act as my voice for a mic. I don't care if there is no speaker output while this is happening.

A:PC Audio output to Mic

A microphone jack is an INPUT, it's not an OUTPUT.

But, if you have a "System Mixer" (may be called Stereo Mix or What You Hear) then you can record what you are hearing on the PC speakers using a program such as the free "Audacity". Record with Audacity and save the file as either wav or MP3. You can then play it back with any media player.

Good Day,

My problems is that no sound can be heard from my laptop. The volume is there. When I play a music file i see the green bar going up and down (in the sound bar). Hello TSG Community,

Recently I noticed my computer has very low sound output. Could a virus have affected this?

I have checked my speakers with another set which produces the same result. Since I am not too savvy with computers I started reading other forums and one indicated I should remove the restore points on my computer, reboot, and to run a anti-virus application. Once anti-virus was complete, I had a trojan virus called "byteverify", which I removed.
I have checked the following to make sure they are all in correct working order:
Realtek application - Checked
2 Ch speakers - Checked
XP OS Audio Control Panel - Checked

Any Suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

A:Low Audio Output for XP OS

Check the volume of both the "master" line, and the WAV line on your audio properties. Sometimes the "master" can be set at maximum, but the WAV will be at minimum, and not be very loud.

also, if you have "powered" speakers (that plug in or run on batteries), make sure they are powered on.

Same or related topic?
However, go to dell support site and try using the XP audio sigmatel driver instead. On certain cases, including network and video drivers not available or not supported on some computer model upgrade/downgrade OS, they would work but take note that they could cause also some bluescreens after installing them which means it is not compatible. A Windows update, missing service pack or check for update by a device manager is also another option. Hope this helps.

I've spent countless hours trying to fix this. It started out with me wanting to enable the "stereo mix" option and so following a youtube video I proceeded to updating the driver using device manager > update driver and after restarting, I received this error.

I then downloaded the newest driver of the manufacturer website (realtek hd audio) and installed it. Mind you, the stereo mix option did in fact show up, although I couldn't make use of any audio since I was getting the "no audio output device is installed" error.

All this time, I can still see the mic/line-in inputs, and headphone/speaker outputs in the sounds (control panel). I have tried uninstalling, reinstalling, and using the roll-back option for drivers. Although from control panel, I managed to uninstall the sound card software for realtek. Between all of this, after any sort of install or uninstall I also restarted my computer.

I downloaded the drivers from the HP site (PC manufacturer for my comp) and the Realtek site (sound card creator) and all of them are giving me the same results.

Furthermore, I even tried the System Restore and it wouldn't work complaining about an anti-virus when all of mine are already disabled. I checked what the System Restore would affect too and nothing for my driver was in there as far as I know.

I'm really not sure what my options are now, and it's sucks not having any sound.

Please help me out! Thanks!
