This update has been causing my issues for the past month or so now, and has been making my computer freeze up fairly badly even more recently.

I read some solutions, such as trying a manual update since this seems to be a broken update released by Windows, however that did not work.

I'd appreciate some help as soon as possible, please. It's becoming unbearable and frustrating to use my computer.

I believe that there are many programmes that will check drivers free, and that one can then manually, one by one, find and replace out of date drivers by new ones.
However, I am wondering if there is any free software that will find the required drivers and then install them
If not, I would appreciate knowing about the experience of readers with any ofthe software that will do it for a fee.

A:software to check/install drivers

If you are NOT having any issues with any hardware, I would NOT go looking for updates to all of your device drivers.

Here is some good advice when installing programs in Vista, # 4 is good advice even if the program was designed for Vista.

Here is how to install software or drivers on Vista that are for XP,2000,NT4,98,95

1. Right click on the setup.exe file for the software/driver you are trying to install and select properties, then the compatibility Tab

2. Tick the "run this file in compatibility mode" box and then select XP, or whatever OS the software was designed for, in the drop down box, Tick "run as Administrator" if it is available, hit OK

3. Now double click this setup.exe file to execute the install process, hopefully all will go well and install the drivers/Software you need.

4. If the exe installs software for the device, or you have installed software only, you need to navigate to the program folder where it installed, then do the compatibility thing (1 & 2) again for the program executable(s). If the program was designed for Vista skip compatibility mode, just tick "run as administrator"

I do not guarantee all drivers or software to work in Vista, but a large percentage do..

Good luck.

If the Software/ installer (exe file) is on CD, copy the entire contents of the CD to a folder in Vista, then start at #1

There is no compatibility mode for .msi installers
16 bit programs will not run on Vista

If Drivers are in INF form, go to Device manager, find the hardware you want to install a driver for and right click select "Update Driv... Read more

I have a Lenovo Edge 15 on Windows 8.1

The new laptop came with preinstalled software and drivers. However I prefer to do a fresh Windows 8.1 install without the Lenvo drivers/software. After doing fresh install, I prefer to go to Lenvo's support site and download and install the drivers manually.

How can I do a fresh install? The OneKey feature will for sure will install the drivers/software from the hidden partition which I don't want. I know Windows 8 has the reset feature, however, I am unsure if it will also install the drivers/software from Lenovo.

Also, I want to ensure that the reset feature won't damage/delete the hidden OneKey partiation.

Is it possible to do a fresh install without doing it from USB?

A:Fresh Windows 8 Install without Lenovo Drivers/Software

the onekey (recovery) partition contains the factory out of the box image.. And yes doing a Reset with onekey will rewrite all the factory software, drivers and bloatware..

If you wish to keep the factory setup for future use - Create a Recovery Drive - first..

Then you can do a clean install of windows 8.1 from USB or DVD and install the MFG's Drivers..

You can download 8.1 here > Create installation media for Windows 8.1 - Windows Help

What should be a routine installation for AMD's GPU drivers now only results in this instead.

That is a screenshot from the latest 16.11.1 drivers right from AMD's site, yet the video drivers themselves won't even show up in the installer!. Potential problems with video drivers are usually solved by using Display Driver Uninstaller, followed by a fresh install. However, not even use of DDU is helping this time around. I have also attempted to use AMD's own Clean Install Utility, but this has not helped either.

I've tried installing as Admin, did not work. I've disabled Microsoft Security Essentials before trying to install, still didn't work. I've even disabled my Intel HD Graphics before trying to install these, with no improvements. I don't understand what's going on, and the only thing I can pick up from what the Install Manager is doing (or NOT doing, in this case), seems to be that it doesn't even think my video card is installed.

If it helps, my current AMD drivers are 16.9.2. I should say that while newer games do work with this version with few to no issues, a particular weekend closed beta test is asking that I update to the latest AMD drivers, hence the thread.

If you do need to install you probably will need to format and clean install win 7.

I have a Asus Zenbook laptop (UX31). I crushed my MBR and somehow I couldn't ever restore it so I did a new clean install (even though I have a Windows.old folder with most if not all of my old files).

And so the usual boring process began: download drivers, installing them, installing the usual software (Avast, Comodo firewall, Chrome, Office, Adobe programs...) and almost on top of that I began doing lot of work with it, sadly I have almost no time to lose.

Somewhere in that process I started noticing some performance problems: doing different things (open a new chrome tab, clicking a link, open folder, clicking low workload buttons in any program) makes the whole thing freeze for 1-4 seconds. Most of the times the mouse can still be moved during the freeze moment, other times even the mouse is freezed for those 1-4 seconds which is more annoying.

In the last install nothing like this happened, system was perfectly fluid. As far as i can remember I have installed the same drivers from the same Asus page, and the same software. Obviously something is different.

I had the suspicion it was COMODO firewall that was freezing things (its alert windows usually freeze more consistently) so I temporarily "disabled it": but problems persist.

Can you help?

A:Clean Win7 install + drivers + basic software = randome little freezes

A:What's the BEST way to install video drivers , new Direct X,and remove older drivers?

This method works best for me. First off, I use Norton Ghost 2003 to make an image of my Windows drive. When I make this image, I have already installed WinXP SP1 plus all the latest Windows updates I can get. Also, I have already installed useful and necessary programs like Norton Antivirus 2002, ZoneAlarm Firewall, NoAds, Analog X Cookiewall. I make sure that I don't have any videocard drivers installed. As for Direct X, it's the default one installed when you first install WinXP.

Now that I have the image, I go on and try installing new Direct X versions or new videocard drivers. If something goes wrong and messes up my system or I'm not happy with the performance of the new drivers or Direct X, I use Norton Ghost 2003 to restore my image. By restoring the image, I have everything back--WinXP SP1 + all updates, programs I've installed, etc. The process only takes about 4 minutes compared to reinstalling Windows + all the programs manually (3-5 hours).

With the image backed up to that original point, I try alternative drivers or Direct X files until I find a setting I like.

This is the way I test new Detonator drivers and Direct X files. It's fool-proof and makes me more bold in trying out new stuff.

If you need more background on the benefits of Ghost 2003 and its usage, check out this guide at Radified.com:

Hope that helped.

Then they get to this PC, and does same thing did with me locks up but doesnt crash for them. Its a custom built PC by the way, they play with it a good hour and a half,
then say that I have to deal with it and suggested I first reinstall windows with the PCI reciever thing in, and then try and track down drivers for the mobo.

Anyone ever had an issue like this?its running XP Pro,

A:Drivers wont install, tech guy says MOBO drivers bad

Can you get it going any way at all - preferably in Safe Mode? If it fires up, hit Fuinction 8 and select the option to disable automatic restart on system failure. That should leave a blue screen error message on for long enough to read it. If you can go all the way to Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking, see what the Event Viewer has to say in Control Panel>Administrative Tools.

Is ther a way to stop windows from installing the drivers to begin with?

First. Do not connect the usb device.

Install the drivers for the device, and only connect the device when either prompted to do so, or after the installation is complete.

Around the end of June my audio went out, since then my dad has tried to help me with it. We finally gave up and decided to reboot my computer and readd Windows XP. The woman who sold the disk said it would add, or update any hardware. We tried that, but it did not work either. I haven't had time till now to try and figure out the problem. I was able to fix two programs that had a yellow question mark when I was in 'Device Mangager' another one popped up after I fixed the two. I uninstalled it and added it again like 'Troubleshoot' said. Once it added itself again it was under the correct spot, but now it had a yellow exclamation point.
I have tried to update it by 'Installing it automatically' and 'Installing from a specific location'.They both have the same result, "The hardware was not installed because the wizard cannot find the necessary hardware." (( the file I'm having problems with is 'SIS 7018 Audio Driver' ))
Hopefully I explained it well enough, and if you can help me please reply!

PAE of course is supposed to enable 128 gb of ram to be used by Windows. I've gotten the patch and followed the tut here
Access to more than 4GB of RAM on 32bit Windows 8 (x86) | Windows OS Hub
to get it to work. Everything went correctly, but when I boot into PAE mode, nothing has changed.
http://i.imgur.com/TSL6Wkn.png
As you can see, Windows (and CPUZ) recognizes the 5GB. But I can still only use 3GB. I know my processor is PAE Supported
because I ran the coreinfo utility and it said it supports PAE, and my processor is a Pentium 4 540 HT which is PAE supporting by default. I just dont know why its working. Do I have to enable it in the BIOS or something?
I have an HP DC5100 MT(2004 model)

A:PAE boot mode hasn't changed anything

Looks to me the issue is with the 32-bit version of Windows. Also, some computers simply can't deal with PAE/Physical Address Extension, have a Dell Inspiron 700m Centrino that can't run Linux Mint 15 or later, had to go with Linux Mint 13. Seems the Centrino part is the issue.

Hi all,

This is a PC riddle. A few weeks ago I started getting an error message on my PC. First it wouldn't detect my ps2 keyboard, and then I got a CMOS checksum error. I tried resetting the board etc. and eventually concluded that I needed to replace the motherboard. So I buy a new Asus board, install all the components, power it up, and I get EXACTLY the same error messages. I'm confused as to how one MB can get the same error messages as an old one. Could it be memory, or my CPU? I'm really confused about this.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Dan

Hello everyone! This all started maybe a month, to two months ago. Randomly, my computer started getting a blue screen with the following written: "PFN_List_Corrupt". At first I thought it was a harddrive issue, so i ordered a new one on warranty. It kind of worked at first, but right away I could already see it didn't fix the problem. Now, from my knowledge it isn't a Windows problem. I think i know this because i ran a driver verifier and un-selected all drivers that had to do with windows, and it still crashed. It also doesn't let me download certain files, for example : Libreoffice, League of Legends, World of Warcraft, Microsoft Office, Visual Studio, Visio, and even at first it wouldn't allow me to download certain drivers (I have no clue on how I got them to download). When I do try downloading these certain programs, it gives me errors such as: Corrupt files, missing files, unable to transfer files, unable to find installer(something along the lines of that), and multiple other errors that I cannot remember off the top of my head. Even when I downloaded Windows 7 on this new harddrive, it had issues. I've re downloaded the OS about 5 times now, and each time it still has the problems. So, to my knowledge, I don't think it's a problem with the harddrive, or the OS, which leaves me absolutely stumped! Here are my PC specs:
CPU: AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 965 Processor
Motherboard: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. 970A-D3

1. Welcome to Tech Support Guy
2. As you think you have eliminated driver errors and we can eliminate HDD faults try MEMTEST
3. The physical test is best -so if for instance you have four sticks of 2GB each take out two sticks so that if it is dual channel - there is one stick left in each channel - normally on a 4 DIMM board that is the same two coloured slots
If you only have two sticks - take out one - ensuring that the slot that must be populated for the system to boot has a stick in.
On a four stick system you get a piece of card and mark on 1, 2, 3 and 4
treating 1 as the stick nearest to the processor OR whatever indication is appropriate
So when you take out two sticks you place them on the respective marks on the card
If the system boots OK and does not BSOD then you can presume at this stage that one of the two you took out is faulty
You replace ONE of the two left in at a time
Again placing the stick you have just taken out in its respective place on the card
If it does Blue Screen with the only the first two left in - you change one of those at a time

I am sure you have the gist of the checking system by now
If that test fails to prove conclusive then run MEMTEST itself on a bootable CD for at least TWO complete passes each pass consisting of 8 to 10 tests
Here is MEMTEST and the explanation

Hi all,

I installed Win 7 onto my pc which had XP beforehand. My ATI HD4650 is AGP 8x (it runs on an ASUS P4R800VM Mobo) and I previously had Catalyst 9.10 on XP with the hotfix.

Win 7 only detects my card as standard VGA adapter, I manually install drivers (from device manager) from the CD that came with the card. This works fine after reboot and Windows detects HD4650 card but with the exclamation mark (card has been stopped because not functioning properly message).

I have tried to follow some steps on here regarding installing 9.10 catalyst, e.g. make installer vista compatible and install, tried vista hot-fix drivers, uninstalled all drivers and tried again, I even re-installed xp and upgraded to win7 again, nothing has worked . Has anyone got any ideas how I can get my card to install catalyst 9.10? Or at least get recognised and functioning properly?

Thanks in advance

A:Please Help! ATI HD4650 hasn't worked since Saturday :(

"I manually install drivers (from device manager) from the CD that came with the card. This works fine after reboot and Windows detects HD4650 card but with the exclamation mark (card has been stopped because not functioning properly message)."

Going by this, there are only 2 possible problems to look at and consider.

1) The AGP to CPU driver for your machine needs some kind of update. Your motheboard only supports latest XP it says. In this case, it could very well be true that they aren't kidding. Or perhaps they just don't want to "offically" support later OS. ASUSTeK Computer Inc.

2) Perhaps a bios update could help. Possible but rare.

The way it seems to me is that if you want graphics acceleration, you must use XP and XP only. No Microsoft OS later.

Go into bios after you update it and set it to AGP Aperature 128MB. You could also try setting it to work at 4X which may rid it of error code 43, but I don't think so. Worth effort to try, however.

That error code 43 does not look good in this case. Use my post to research if you are interested in going the last mile to try to fix your problem. It's my educated guess you can not, but I wish good luck.

Let me know if you find anything reasonably related.

About a week ago my laptop started performing poorly. Windows got glitchy once night so I rebooted, but when Windows started up it was incredibly slow and incredibly unstable. Desktop icons weren't loading, and if I did click an icon it would take forever to load before ultimately failing. A recurring error message was this:WerFault.exe - Application ErrorThe instruction at 0x00000000775D9C12 referenced memory at 0x00000000100050FE4. The required data was not placed into memory because of an I/O error status of 0xc0000185. Click on OK to terminate the program. Basically, the computer was unusable. A couple of hard reboots didn't help. Then I tried starting Windows normally and then shutting it down through the Start Menu. This took a long time but it worked; a safe reboot led to my computer performing as usual. Then yesterday, the same problem arose. Windows was getting glitchy, so I rebooted only for Windows to load in a similar slow and unstable state. Hard reboots didn't help, and even a safe reboot didn't help this time around. I booted into safe mode and backed up my files onto an external hard drive. Then I used my Toshiba Recovery CD that came with my laptop and wiped my hard drive clean and reinstalled Windows. The re-install took about the normal amount of time and when everything completed Windows was working crisply. Last night, I tried downloading Service Pack 2 (among other updates). It downloaded, and then I left it on overnigh... Read more

It may be that the HP Tablet you have doesn't have the necessary drivers ready. Check the HP web site for any information about it. Some manufacturers have not finished prep for Windows 10 on all their devices. My Toshiba Encore 7 didn't get the icon until 2 days ago even though I had the KB installed.

new computer, see profile, Windows 7 professional came installed, but not the updates...so I'm running updates. I see a lot of history in the forums from years 2011 and 2012 about this update loading over and over. What is happening now is different in that the update keeps saying it needs to be installed, I install it, computer says it installed successfully, I reboot. I rerun update search and it finds same update kb2538242 still needs to installed. The difference is that it actually does need to be installed...it does not show in the "view updates" list.

I have tried manually installing, and installing an alternate file I saw in the forums (it no longer exists). I've installed the file probably 20 times. I can't just ignore it because it won't do any of the later updates including those for Office 2010 which I just installed. I can't figure out what to do. Can anyone help? HI, I just installed windows 2000 professional onto my computer. Everything works fine except that the resolution is really grainy. On some web sites I cannot even make out what the words are. I found out that when I go into my monitor settings in display properties I am unable to install the drivers for my monitor. Does anybody know a way in which I can get around this.

A:monitor drivers unable to install on fresh windows 2000 install

Are you really referring to the monitor drivers or the Dispay Adapter drivers? The symptoms you describe sound like the latter issue.

Monitor drivers are no big deal to install, and even if you don't, Windows should use compatible plug and play drivers. Still it's a good idea to install them -- but you get them from the Monitor vendor site. You get the Display Adapter drivers from the Display Adaptor vendor's site.

What Display Adapter model do you have? And are they properly installed?

To install a Monitor driver, you download and unzip the .inf file from the Vendor. Then you select "update driver" and browse to the location of the file you unzipped. Once installed your Monitor should be recognized by model number.

Very odd new problem:  I have a new WD MyCloud drive and the online link to the main software downloaded just fine, but when I go to install the software, I get the little Windows blue spinning icon for about 8-10 sec and then nothing.  I have tried to download several times and was finally able to install the software under SAFEMODE with NETWORKING - but in Safemode, several networking connections that were needed for the setup of the cloud drive will not take place.

I came back and tried to install again after returning from SAFEMODE - but not luck again.

WD support says it's something on my machine that is blocking the install (however I can install other software with no issue).

I'm wondering if this PORT related or a simple setting in my registry that needs to be corrected.  Of course Windows Support want $150 annual support to simply reinstall windows!  (Rip off).

I have Hijackthis LOG or other options that I can post.

Any help appreciated!

Hello,

New to this forum and need your help.

I install Win 7 off an SCCM server that is controlled by our corporate office in another country. They do not want to tweak the SCCM to improve my workload or give us more control to modify/script the SCCM to meet our needs. I have the daunting task of configuring Win 7 everyday with the same tweaks and/or installation of software after the SCCM has completed.

Looking to streamline this process as much as possible and have not been able to find anything even close to what I need or if it's even available.

Need the software to open programs and make tweaks/setting changes within the programs. Change settings in IE and explorer , install programs from our server, then install. Some software needs a reboot, then tweaked out.

I know I'm asking for alot, but if I can find anything that might help me in anyway to speed up the configuration process for our users it would be greatly appreciated.

A:Looking for software that can tweak/install software after Win 7 loads

Welcome to the Seven Forums.

AutoIt can do what you want.

You can either automate the GUI (i.e. click/type where a human would) or just automate changes to the registry and files or use a combination of those two methods.

If you don't like the syntax of AutoIt, you can look at a fork named AutoHotKey. I've used both and I like AutoIt... but I cannot recommend AutoIt's somewhat rude support forum - YMMV.

Hi,
I want to get an uninstaller program which can delete all the traces of another software from registry, history etc...so that when I install the program say fro 30 days trial version, when I uninstall the trial version software thru that software "X" and install it again, then I should get another 30 days trial period...I wouldn't mind even if the history of files accessed by that uninstalled program get lost during this cleaning up. What catches my imagination is that third party software should invoke the installer program of the program to be installed and will monitor all the changes done by the installed software...and when we try to uninstall that will revert back by doing all the changes made by the installed software...
Please suggest some good softwares for doing this job...Free-wares will be the best!
Thanks in advance,

Hello, this is my first post on the forum, and I hope you can help me.
I have recently been given an HP 6465b probook. It had been dropped and the hard drive had failed. I installed a new hdd and got a copy of Windows 7 ultimate x64. The install went well until I discovered I couldn't connect to the Internet. There are at least 5 drivers missing.
They are for the SM Bus controller, Broadcom netxtreme gigabit ethernet controller, Broadcom netxtreme II network controller, two unknown devices. Now I think about there may be others as well.
I checked the system 32 / drivers folder and they are all there I think.
I tried to install the drivers in the usual way but windows says it cannot find them. I tried to install them from the windows disc. Again windows couldn't find them. I connected to my router via cable to try get cconnected that way but no luck. I have downloaded drivers to cd and installed from there, but I got an error code 10 device cannot start. In sysinfo it says driver not installed properly.
So I am at a loss as to what to try next. I hope the forum can assist with this.

Kind regards,....... Amazingmin (Dean)

Hello everyone,
this is my first time here. Hopefully someone can shed some light on this problem, as it has made everything grind to a halt.

My main computer just died, so I figured I'd take my old computer, which was never hooked up to the internet (in order to always keep it clean as a baby's rear end), and use it to run either diagnostics and/or data recovery software on my malfunctioning C drive from my dead computer.

The old computer had XP pro sp2 on it, with a P4 3.4 processor, and an Intel board. The first obstacle, was getting it online. Simply plugging in the networking cable did nothing. After endless amounts of reading, it seems that because they computer was never meant to be online, the networking (or "LAN"?) drivers were never installed. After many tries and much confusion, I finally had someone find them online for me, put the drivers on a thumbdrive, and after a few attempts I was able to get this old girl connected. But I must say, for those who don't really know what they are doing very well, the procedure for setting up the network connections was anything but easy. The automated system for doing it failed every time. No reason way. So I finally managed to do it manually, somehow. To be honest, I don't even remember now. When you attempt to do something for 12 hours in a row, trying every possible solution, it's easy to forget specifics.

Anyway, I got hooked into the internet. The next step was upgrading to SP 3, which I had already p... Read more

If so, how do I install the relevant drivers from the USB pen?

99.9% sure that W7 will identify the trackpad and install it. You just run the exe's using file explorer or Start >Run then browse. You may decide to leave the laptop as the W7 install left it but you should check Device Manager to ensure there are no unrecognised devices

Anyone run into this problem?
Existing install of XP - added a Seagate SATA drive - XP comes up and sees the new hardware (Raid controller) - and asks for drivers. I point it to the correct drivers (tried several different versions) - and it seems to start going along ok - and then comes up with the following message:
Cannot Install this Hardware. An error occured during the installation of the device. The system cannot find the file specified.

The strange thing is - is even though the Raid controller is in a state of ... hanging there with an exclamation mark on it in device manager - the system then comes up and sees the actual drive. But if I click on the raid controller in device manager - it says it is not working properly and cannot tell me what drivers are running it.....

Any help would be appreciated!!!

Hi there gurus.

My pc doesn?t show certain colour objects in Publisher 2007 and some on-line sites. Overall, the screen colour is generally very good. I know the fault is localised, because when I switch to Print Preview in Publisher it looks fine and I can see all the object colours. (I only lose the colour with objects, not text)
Also, when I send a copy of a Publisher page to my partner who is on the same PC, it looks fine on her screen.

I?ve tried going to Install/uninstall programs and run the Repair, but to no avail. The guys in my computer shop are clueless without seeing it. Anyone who can help solve this for me is a gem.
Cheers!

My friend has had this machine since the middle of last year. Updates have been failing to install or even download since SP1 failed to install. I have included a Screenshot of the last time any updates were applied. As you can see there is an SP1 failure and the security update before that was the last successful actual Windows update to be applied. There is also another SP1 fail a few days before that too. The only updates after the SP1 failure are Defender updates and Office updates and these are all successful.

I have tried the instructions in http://www.vistax64.com/software-too...air-tools.html but none of those work (the first step is non-existant and when I try and install the Windows Update agent it just responds with the usual 0x8000FFFF (Catastrophic error i believe code). After doing the manual reset of the Windows Update and going to the inbuilt Windows Update it now comes up with the 0x8000FFFF error and says it can't search for updates which it was doing before. you can reinstall without uninstalling it beforehand, it will try to replace the missing files and repair the installation for you. just simply put the game in the drive and follow the on screen instructions.

Just curious, how many of you have used Windows 8, have tried the various free preview options and have decided to simply NOT purchase the product by the end of the day tomorrow when the $40 upgrade price offer goes away.

I will be the first one to say, I haven't purchased a copy and am not planning to.

A:Show of hands, who hasn't and isn't buying the $40 upgrade

Fortunately I got it for $14.99 since I bought this machine back in June. Glad I didn't spend more than that because I'm not staying with it.

I wanted to post this for future readers as the info is in a thread that does not have "NOD32" in the title. (W7 64-bit as slow as Vista 32-bit? Your experience?)

I recently did a fresh install of W7 Ultimate 64-bit, and as I have done for years, installed my trusty NOD32 AV [vers 2.7]. The program seemed to work seamlessly at first, but then after being on the system for awhile I'd notice that when I tried to delete even a small file, the progress bar would pop up and it would take several seconds to delete. This behavior was finally proven to be the AMON scanner in NOD32, (thanks to WindowsStar for thinking out loud and leading me in the right direction). What was odd is that sometimes I could boot and it wouldn't do this for the entire day... the next day, it might do it within an hour of booting, and once the behavior started, even a [warm] reboot would not fix it.

The other problem I had (which I Googled months back and know is a common complaint with NOD32), is that when I would download a file, the system would hang at the last few bits...then when NOD's scanner finally kicked it, it would take an inordinate amount of time to scan the file. While this was occurring, the system was frozen. Very irritating!

I thought it might be b/c my version vers of NOD32 was so old. I downloaded the latest trial version for 64-bit (v 4.0.474.x IIRC). Again, for the first hour or so everything was peachy. Then very soon I had the same behaviors.

As a result, after years ... Read more

A:NOD32 caused slow-down, AVAST hasn't

Personally, I'm not paying for any antivirus packages again. Probably ever. I use MSE - it has everything you need and naturally works with 7. I would be very careful with what antivirus package you choose. 7 is new, and the vendors are getting sloppy - NOD32, AVG cough cough.

When this Norton 360 licence expires on the laptop in my specs, MSE is going to be installed.

Just thought this was interesting.

Since XP sometimes the taskbar would get stuck open and not auto hide. The reason for this is the system is trying to display a notification window about something but it's not being displayed where it's visible. The solution is to go into task manager and close all instances of Windows Explorer ( not Internet Explorer) and then from the task manager, re-run Explorer.exe. The task bar will auto hide normally now.
Windows Explorer - Restart explorer.exe in Windows 8
I came across this researching the problem because I had t in Windows 8. I have found instances of this same problem and the same fix from Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7 and now Windows 8.

You would have thought Microsoft would have learned by now.

A:Found a bug Microsoft hasn't fixed since Windows XP

I see a Mod edited this as soon as I posted it adding the "Windows Explorer - Restart explorer.exe in Windows 8" link. Apparently problems like the one I mentioned above are so common place, Microsoft had to add a quick restart feature for Windows Explorer instead of properly fixing the problem.

I find that even more interesting than my above post.

When I try to connect to my wireless network I get an IP address of 0.0.0.0. I'm sure I have the network key correct. I tried several things to fix this problem.

1. I tried disabling and renabling the wireless network connection.
2. I tried ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew
3. I tried assigning a static ip and it connected, but I did not have internet access. Never assigned a static IP before so I'm not sure if I did this right. (Afterwards I switched back to dynamic ip)
4. I tried disconnecting power from wireless router and then after a minute reconnecting power.
5. I tried to right-click -> repair the connection, but it got hung up on "Renewing the ip address".

Note: I tried the laptop on another wireless network and it connected properly and worked fine. The laptop is a Dell and I disabled Dell's wlan utility and am just using the default Windows one.

Could this be a firewall issue?

Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

However it is occurring on all my hardware and Mac. IPv6 installs by itself and also creates a IPv6 tunnel on my router which I have tried to disable however it keeps reactivating. My ADSL service also looks compromised but my isp insists that I'm not even though I'm on router number 4 - this has been occurring for 3 months- I'm rebuilding every couple of days and it's driving me crazy!!! Hi all,

I'm working on a re-install of all components following a complete corruption of the boot sector on my drive which could not be fixed with repairs. The last time I installed everything fresh, I had no issues. Between then and now, there have been no hardware changes on my system, but now I am having issues installing the IDT Codecs.

I keep getting an error along the following lines:

Quote:
ExitError: Error=Device Object not present, restart the system and run setup again.

Running under compatibility mode, and running drivers from both the motherboard CD and the manufacturer website both have the same effect. The CD, when booted, says "This OS not support!" and only contains 32-bit vista codecs. ECS' website download indicates the IDT drivers as being compatible with Win7. Both do not work. It is almost as if the hardware "disappeared," despite the fact that I was using the drivers quite successfully till just 2 days ago, when the boot sector went kaput.

Windows has installed its own default set, which do nothing to power the 8mm jacks which I use with my speakers, but instead put sound through the HDMI, which is useless because I use a dedicated graphics card. I have tried uninstalling this codec and re-installing IDT, to no effect. Windows replaces with its own default codec.

I have referenced this thread here, but offered solutions do not seem to work for me: Intel IDT Audio Driver will not install

A:IDT Audio Drivers Won't Install - Win7x64, clean install

Do you actually have the newer IDT audio chip or an older SigmaTel audio chip. In most cases the newer IDT drivers will not work with the older SigmaTel chips.

If the drivers are Vista compatible and the correct IDT or Sigmatel (32 and/or 64) they should work in Win 7.

When you reinstalled did you install any motherboard chipset drivers? Generally, on a reinstall if the chipset drivers are not installed then some device drivers and especially sound drivers will not install.

Got a used HP printer so tried to install Photosmart software from the internet. When used either the downloaded version or directly from HP web site, on execute/run the program shows message "Extracting" then brings up window to install ATI parental controls software. Tried installing the same software on different computer also running Windows XP SP3 and on a machine running Vista and install accomplished correctly. Have tried scanning with Norton both desktop version and Norton Power Eraser run from the internet that is supposed to scan more completely and neither found any malware or rootkit problems. There is an ATI video card on the computer but we have never installed any parental controls software for it and have no children in the house who need parental controls! When the Norton internet scan ran, it identified 4 files associated with the .NET framework as files that it couldn't identify as either good or bad. Could that make the install program work incorrectly? There don't seem to be any other problems with the computer.

Can drivers usually be installed 'on top of' existing drivers? When reading the excellent Tutorial on Driver Installations at bleepingcomputer, I noticed it did not seem to say that uninstalling drivers usually needed to be done before updating them. However, I read the following quote today that that seemed to contradict my understanding."Before installing any new drivers, make sure to go to 'Add or Remove Programs' under the Control Panel and uninstall any previous drivers for your device, then reboot Windows, and install the new version." (Quoted from: The Tweaking XP Guide at (must download) http://www.tweakguides.com/TGTC.html).Now, I must be missing something, because it also seems that most drivers are not listed in Add/Remove Programs either!I would like to update most of my drivers, so I just wanted to get a 'feeling' for what was the general rule (of course I will TRY to see what specific update sites say). Thanks everyone - yardcat

A:Install Drivers Over Existing Drivers?

Hi Yardcat,

For myself, unless the update specifically says that I need to uninstall the previous driver, I just allow the update to install over it.

I have never had any problems with doing it this way.
Hope that helps.

I have tried the following:

None of the above has worked, I still get the same error code - 80070002. I have also tried all of the above with my antivirus software disabled and with Windows firewall disabled (just a shot in the dark there).
If anyone can think of anything else I can try, that would be really appreciated. Otherwise its going to be a reinstall I guess

So I can't remember exactly when this happened, but a while ago (1-2 years?) I was downloading some files and moving them around to different folders and/or erasing stuff when something happened... I can't recall exactly what, but something may have crashed (explorer perhaps?) and when my system recovered/rebooted there was a file still sitting in my downloads folder that I had already just erased. Explorer shows it as 0 bytes, so there is no actual data there, and every time I try to delete it again it just displays a message saying "Could not find this item: The file is no longer located in C:/Users/etc/Downloads/ Verify the item's location and try again" which of course is correct because the file hasn't existed on my HDD for over a year.

I can't understand why Windows still seems to think it is there though. Clearly, some tag somewhere in the registry or whatever didn't get deleted with the rest of the data, but I am not enough of a computer guru to solve this. I built the system myself, so I am familiar enough with the steps needed to accomplish that, but the only thing I can think of to correct this issue is to just reformat the drive and do a clean install of Win 7, which I haven't done yet obviously as it's kind of a headache but may have to do it soonish anyhow. Meantime I've simply been ignoring the "file" and it hasn't been a problem. Does anyone know if there is an easier fix for this? In case it happens again I won't have to be irrita... Read more

I have been using Spybot Search and Destroy for about as long as I have owned this computer (1 1/2 years) and for the past few months everytime I search for updates there are no updates to be found. I am not getting an error message, just a message saying that there are no newer updates. Now this really confuses me because they used to have updates about once a week. I have tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it but to no avail. I am beginning to wonder if I have a malicious program on my computer somewhere which is preventing it from even getting to the update server. Hello justnothing and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. I see no signs of viruses or malware inthe log. It is clean. The HijackThis forum deals exclusively with virus and malware issues. HijackThis does not have the capability to analyze performance, hardware or application issues. For these types of issues I would suggest posting to the Windows XP Home and Professional forum. The techs in that forum specialize in matters pertaining to the operating system, performance and applications. Let them know that you have been to this forum and that no malware was found. When posting to any other forum, do not post a HijackThis log or the post will simply be moved back to this forum for infection analysis. That is what HijackThis is used for and that is what we specialize in here in this forum. Also, when posting in any other forum for assistance, give as much detail as possible regarding any issues that are occurring. The more information they have, the better the techs can analyze the issue and make any recommendations for resolving it.Cheers.OT

Mac girl freaking!

Moved her boyfriend's monitor tonight to set it up to watch a movie and now getting "input not supported". It's an Acer flat screen monitor. About a year old. Computer runs Windows. No difference in safe mode (holding down F8 key after starting with power button on the computer). Get same message. No response from other buttons on the monitor. Tried reattaching cable on both ends. Made sure I was turning on monitor first, before power on computer.

No TV or other monitor to try to hook up.

What next?!

A:Input Not Supported - So Far Research Hasn't Turned Up Answer

My boyfriend was quite sane about the whole thing...he did the same thing I did and reconnected cables etc. The next day he moved monitor back down to desk level, and walah, it is now working again (except with all the button pushing on the monitor itself or perhaps the disconnect the resolution is off). We suspect in the final analysis the issue is the cable. Crossing fingers it is a $9 solution from Office Max. For the time being we just haven't moved the monitor again!

Not sure if I'm in the right forum but a couple days ago, my one year old Dell Studio 1558 laptop running windows 7 64bit couldn't connect to my Linksys Router. I think the router model is WRT54G or something like that. But i never had problems before connecting to wifi. It is not the router's issue because my other computers can connect to it just fine. I have already contacted the linksys and they've confirmed it's not their issue although they told me they would fix my computer for $10. I called Dell and they were no help at all. They only told me I had to pay $60 for them to fix it.

I'm generally pretty good with computers and I'm pretty sure there is nothing wrong with my laptop itself. I'm hoping that there's just some setting that changed all of a sudden and if I could reset it, the problem would be fixed. I also hotwired the modem to my laptop and the internet worked just fine so its just something going on with my computer.

Everytime I try to run Windows Update, it tells me it encountered an unknown error and gives me that code.

I ran SURT, it didn't fix the problem.

I opened an elevated Command Prompt and ran sfc /scannow. It told me that it found corrupt files but it could not correct them. I even ran it in Safe Mode and also at boot and it still couldn't fix the corrupt files. I have attached the log file for that, the CBS log file and the DISM log file. Attempting to run Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth gave me error code 87.

I have also tried to run the Windows system repair feature on the install DVD but even that was unsuccessful in solving the problem.

I don't have any restore points prior to 6-17-15 when the issue started since they were deleted in an attempt to fix this problem.

I don't have any registry backups prior to 6-17-15 either, although another user was performing registry edits on this laptop and deleted the backups that he created.

I have the correct original System32 file and all of it's contents on my desktop that I extracted from a Windows 7 install DVD that I can use if needed but I am uncomfortable with replacing these files without knowledgable help.

Hopefully this will give you enough information to help me solve this problem.

Thanks in advance.

The latest Windows 10 Insider Preview, build 14367, is now making its way to PCs and phones on the Fast ring. PC users have a couple of new features to look forward to when installing it, and those wishing to perform a clean installation of the OS can now do so more easily, with a "new tool to give your PC a fresh start".

But of course, a new build doesn't just mean new features; as ever, it also means that there are lots of fixes to look forward to, and known issues to be aware of.

My mouse, keyboard, usb dac, and virtual dvd drive are all having problems with drivers. I can plug my keyboard in wherever I want and use it in the bios, but once i get to windows, i have a whole two usb ports that my keyboard works in anymore. This is the result of a number of failed attempts by windows to find and install generic driver software, which I don't actually need (because the keyboard works just fine in some ports, and before i accidentally let windows try to find the drivers, it worked smoothly in the others as well). This is the case for all of the listed devices. Whenever I ask windows to install driver software, it tells me that i have to insert a disc (incidentally, none of these devices come with discs because windows si supposed to have the drivers by default). When I click other options and set it to browse my entire drive for drivers, it gives me an error message that says that it found driver software, but the selected file could not be found. For everything. and then whatever it is, is unable to work in that port again. I tried downloading microsofts intellipoint drivers, and that didn't work. Please, help me fix this so I dont have to re install?

No, not during installation. The Windows 7 DVD normally has all drivers on it. When you have completed the install, it will search the internet for drivers and DL if needed. You should be OK.

I'm typing this from my laptop (Thank goodness I have one). Alright, on my Windows XP desktop I installed the Flyakite OSX Tramsformation pack that makes your Windows computer look similar to Mac, including boot screen, login screen, shutdown screen. When I used the uninstaller it uninstalled everything except those three things above. My computer was also very slow. So I decided to do a clean install of my system using the CD that came with my computer. I formatted my hard drive then it continued with the installation. When it was finally over, it loaded very fast but the screen resolution was at 640x480 and I couldn't make it larger (The slider wouldn't move. The colors were Medium (16 bit) and it was the only option in the drop down box. Troubleshoot didn't help me at all so I clicked Advanced. I couldn't even access the dropdown box for DPI setting (It was greyed out and on Normal Size (96 DPI)) Under the Adapter tab in Advanced, all of the Adapter Information was <unavailable> (Is this normal?). Under the Monitor tab, The Monitor type was "Default Monitor" and the Properties button was greyed out and I couldn't click on it. There is also only ONE thing under Add or Remove programs: Dell Resource CD, which I had installed while trying to fix the problem myself. I tried to install the monitor driver but in the readme on the CD it told me to go to Monitor properties to install them (But it was greyed out) Someone PLEASE help me fix this! My desktop is practi... Read more

A:Can't install Display Drivers after clean install

Hello Mp5shooter

There are lots of drivers on that Dell Resource CD which you need to install.

See this help from Dell. It tells you which order to install them.
Installing the video driver will probably fix your problem

..and won't install my network card or printer. They all have a question mark beside them in Device Manager.

I recently performed a driver update on this computer using Driver Genius then I had to format and install a new drive on to which I've been trying to install XP

I can't connect to the Net although I have one 1394 connection installed.

Any ideas most welcome. In fact my first born may be available....
Thanks in advance

I downloaded latest Win 10 64 Home ISO with Media Creation Tool. And prepared bootable ISO with latest Rufus portable.

I clean install Win 10 64 Home with this bootable ISO on 3 laptop, HP (almost similar to mine), Acer & my laptop HP.
On both HP & Acer no probs.

I tried 3 clean install on my HP laptop (I had already installed Win 10 on first stable release & no probs were there) install, windows updates & everything is fine.
BUT on first windows updates it find couple updates & everything installs fine except graphic & audio drivers. It mention error failed to install. And for other installed updates I have to restart the system. After system restart on settings panel windows updates mention there were probs with some updates, Retry. I click retry & windows updates starts checking windows updates & mention up-to-date. I checked graphic & audio drivers on device manager & it mention drivers working fine. No yellow icon or anything. Graphic & Audio on the system seems fine.
But whenever I start system it remains black for couple mins (little longer than normal) & screen directly appears on logon screen or sometimes I press enter few times & then logon screen appears. Subsequent restart no probs. But if I shutdown the system the same prob i.e first start with black screen & subsequent restart no probs.

I am thinking of uninstall/reinstall drivers. How to do it?
I mean on device manager 1 graphic driver is shown. When I ... Read more

I just bought a 500 GB SSD, and I installed Windows 7 Pro on it. I was going to clone my drive, but the SSD to USB cable I ordered was from China and won't arrive for more than a month (I did not see that when I ordered it). The install took, but it didn't pick the USB ports, wireless, or ethernet up. Normally, I would go to the HP site, download the drivers, and call it a day. This time, however, I simultaneously cannot access the internet, my USB drive, or my micro SD (i.e., I have no way short of buying and burning a DVD to transfer the drivers to the drive).

I tried the generic USB drivers provided with windows, but it still wouldn't read the drive. Is there a generic driver for WIFI, SD, or USB bundled with windows that will work in cases like this? I am a programmer and consider myself to be a modestly advanced user (i.e., registry solutions and system hacks are fine). Thanks in advance.

A:Install drivers on fresh 7 install without USB, SD, wireless, or LAN

Are those USB 3 ports (blue ones)?

Try Linux Mint MATE (if asked for choose TRY and not INSTALL!) or Windows 7 Repair Disk (command prompt) to copy paste to SSD.

I absolutely killed Windows 7 today. I don't know what I did, but nobody else uses the computer so.....

I installed Windows 7 (dvd) and everything went smoothly.

But there are no device drivers installed and I don't know where to get them or how to install them. I mean I am totally blank here. I need all the help anyone is willing to put forth.

Dell Inspiron 17 5721, System Type - x64, Intel core i7 @ 1.9 Ghz, MS Windows 7 Home Premium,
1 TB hard disk; 8 GB memory.

I am connected at this time using Ubuntu.

Thank you

Dear all,I'm gonna add a Samsung EVO and make a clean Windows 10 64 install in this Envy 17. Apparently, this is my notebook: http://support.hp.com/us-en/product/HP-ENVY-17-n100-Notebook-PC/8499288/model/8949605 First question is how do I get a list with my product specification? Could not find on the site. I can easily find them for my previos HP notebooks. Second, in which order should I install the drivers I downloaded from HP site? I was actually getting ready to post here about my x00000124 problem but reading other posts realized that my motherboard drivers were freakishly out of date (2006 versions, forgot about them last time I was installing a system). I dled all new ones, installed them all, performed a restart and then used newly installed ASUS Suite to update my BIOS.

Not sure if that's relevant, but after that last successful startup there was a bunch on popups asking for promision to launch several application (related to the driver update I imagine). I agreed to all of those and nothing beyond that happened.
I did not restart computer again before performing BIOS upgrade.

BIOS itself seems to work just fine.

When I attempted to start system with new BIOS my computer restarts about 1 sec after starting animation begins. I can only launch it in "Startup Repair" mode and it communicates that automatic repair was impossible. For those reasons i can't provide that archive with dumps and whatnot. Safe Mode isn't working either.

I'll rewrite problem signature "System Repair" provided:

Problem Event Name: StartupRepairOffline
Problem Signature 01: 6.1.7600.16385
2: 6.1.7600.16385
3: unknown
4: 21199297
5: AutoFailover
6: 2
7: BadDriver
OS Version: 6.1.7601.2.1.0.256.1
Locale ID: 1033

Forgive me shitty formatting but am on the phone right now.

I was trying to install an older USB joystick software on my PC. The Kaspersky Internet Security 2011 quarantined the INSTALL.EXE file. So the joystick did not install. What setting do I change in the AV to resolve this

A:AV software won't allow joystick software to install

The easiest way is to disconnect from the Internet > Close Kaspersky > Install the the software> Restart Kaspersky. If you get an alert on the .exe change it's restriction level.

is there any software app that can find all updates for drivers? without me having to search the net?

A:software for drivers

There's a few knocking about, but never actually used one, apart from a beta one uploaded here a while ago, which was registering Intel systems as AMD and vice versa, so have chose to stay well clear of them altogether.
