Using DELL Optiplex GX620 - Installing 6 GB of RAM

Q: Using DELL Optiplex GX620 - Installing 6 GB of RAM

I'm running Ubuntu Linux (64-bit) and upgraded from 4 GB to 6 GB of RAM. Currently, this is how my Optiplex GX620 rates, according to BIOSAgentPlus:

BIOS Type:

BIOS Date:
October 13th, 2005

OptiPlex GX620

Intel 2770 rev 2

Dell Inc.

OptiPlex GX620

As I understand it, A05 is capped at 4 GB, even though my 64-bit OS will see more, if the BIOS allows. If I flash up to A11, will that remove the 4 GB limitation, or am I still stuck with it?

A: Using DELL Optiplex GX620 - Installing 6 GB of RAM

Hi LinuxSupahFly,
The memory support depends on the chipset on the motherboard and the Intel 945G Express Chipset supports only 4GB. Updating the BIOS to the latest version will not remove the limitation. For information on the Intel 945G Express Chipset memory controller, please visit the following link:

Hello I wanted to ask about a graphics card upgrade for my dell optiplex gx620.

Current specs:

CPU: Intel Pentium 4 HT 3.00Ghz
GPU: Nvidia GeForce 8400 GS
HDD: Seagate 250 GB

I am pretty sure I can upgrade the GPU but don't know which card works the best for it. Also my Power supply is 280 watts.

Thanks and if you need more info please tell me.

A:Dell Optiplex GX620 GPU Upgrade

With the very small power supply you will be limited. Unless there is a pressing need for better graphics I would just stay with what you have. Many (most) of the Dell's in the period when the GX620 (2005 area) was made have proprietary power supplies. If you have the full desktop you "may" be able to find a higher power replacement. If this GX620 is the smaller compact case models I would forget it.

Dell only supports XP as the latest OS, although that is not the restricting hardware issue.

Sorry to be so negative, but you are very limited.

I am having a hard time finding the specs on this model. It is the smallest Optiplex GX620 that they make. I need to know specs on memory, what is the limit on processor upgrade, etc.

This was the closest post I could find for this request.. This computer has no slots at all for adding any card. It has built into the motherboard audio, 25 pin printer port, 9 pin port, ethernet, 5 usb on back and 2 on front with head phone and microphone jacks, only a dvi port for monitor NO VGA without use of adapter, and the power supply uses a model DA-2.

Please help with any info or where to find info. I keep getting info on the larger case models. I need to know memory type and speed to install and what is the highest performance processor I can use. The hard drive has been removed but from the cables it takes a sata hard drive. Really small case with not much room. Only 2 RAM memory slots.

I hate these small cases but I got stuck with several and I need to get them running to get my investment back. Please help!!

A:Dell Optiplex GX620 tag# 43dnv91

Here is the Spec Sheet From Dell. It is for all GX620 series but aside from expansion slots or lack thereof and case the basic motherboards / chipsets are all the same, it also has notations for SFF specific Specs. The Chipset is an intel 945G which theoretically can take up to a 800 or 1066mhz FSB conroe / allendale core 2 duo although those are not listed on the Dell supported list and Dell's are notorious for not doing well with unsupported upgrades not to mention that the SFF case could be a limiting factor. The Ram is DDR2 2 DIMM slots with 4GB max (2GB per slot).

Hey there. I'm modding an old Dell Optiplex GX620.. Several actually. I'm turning them into bar top arcade machines that will run video game emulators. Well I was able to pick up 3 of these machines off craigslist for very cheap.

Once I get them all functioning properly and operating as intended, I'll be removing them from their Dell cases and installing them into an arcade cabinet. All the parts will be exposed inside the cabinet.

The problem I'm running into is the CPU's have these gigantic heat sinks sitting on top of them and a side-facing fan sucking the hot air from the heat sink fins and blowing it out the front of the PC case.

This setup will not work for me. As-is, the fan blows the hot air out the front of the case, but when the motherboard is installed into the arcade cabinet, the fan will not be in a position to blow the hot air out of the cabinet. I need to install a smaller, more up-to-date cpu cooling fan that will blow the air up into the cabinet, the fan that comes with the intel core-i5 processor or something similar would be ideal, then a larger fan will be mounted in the back of the cabinet, blowing all the hot air from the cabinet out the back, not just the hot air from the cpu heat sink.

I hope that made sense, I'll attempt to add pictures.
EDIT:The first picture is the current heatsink/fan setup. The second picture is the type of fan I feel would be ideal. The third is the available holes for install after that giganti... Read more

I recently purchased 2GB of DDR2 RAM for my Dell Optiplex GX620.

I already have 2 sticks of 512mb in there, and I just added the single 2GB stick to one of the spare slots.

I booted it up after installing the ram, and nothing appeared on my monitor. The PC repeatedly buzzed.

I took out the RAM and tried it with only the 2GB stick. It worked.

For some reason, it will not work with my other 1GB of RAM.

Can anyone help?

Hi, I am new here as this will be my first post, i was looking around and didnt find much about the optiplex i have.

well anyways, its a dell optiplex gx620 with a pentium 4 2.8ghz 64 bit with Hyper Threading technology, and it has 1gb of DDR2 ram

other than that everything is onboard, sound, video, etc..

I was wondering what kind of video card I can get for it.... im not sure what kind of slots im assumin they are pci-express but i wouldnt know how to tell you as im not all too computer savvy when it comes to parts.. I do realize that the video would have to be one of those low profile ones, anybody recommend me a good one? I want to use it for pretty much overall use a little bit of gaming( cant wait for diablo 3) and multimedia, any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.

I've had my 2006 Dell Optiplex GX620 since new. I am running XP Pro, with all automatic updates keeping up with MS. There have been no changes other than updates for the past 2 years. I had been leaving it on all the time, and recently it started randomly shutting down, booting back up, and showing a message that Windows is recovering from a serious error. When directed to the website, it says that the info gathered is not usable. When the system is cold, it will run for approx 20-25 minutes before shutting down. After that, it will go only a few minutes before crashing. Possibly a thermal problem? Any advice?

I heard about the fsb bieng capped at 800mhz and wondered also if i could buy a dell optiplex board that supports intel core 2 or if their is any way to flash the BIOS to allow this

A:best processor upgrade for Dell Optiplex GX620

The GX620 doesn't support any Core processors. The chipset theoretically could do some of the low end ones, but the bios has to recognize the processor and then more or less let the motherboard adjust the voltage provided to the processor.
The best you can get is a Pentium D I believe. The first Optiplex with Core support was the 745 if memory serves.

Over the past month I installed two brand new 500 GB Western Digital HDD. They worked fine for a while and everything worked great until I came home one day and I turned on my monitor and was receiving an error. "SATA 0: Not Found" or something along those lines. It has been happening often since then and I am also having problems booting from my primary HDD. After a while I received a "Alert: Previous Fan Failure" error and it seemed my fan was ****ed. I took off the side panel and turned on my CPU and everything was fine, my fan was running and everything. After that I got another HDD not found error and took the HDD's out and they seriously were too hot to touch and they heat up incredibly fast and now everytime I use my system after about 20 to 30 minutes it freezes and ****s up, it has never had this happen before and my fan is still working. Here are my specs:

Ok so there was a Dell optiplex gx620 small Form sitting around my house when a laptop I was using *** out. I put a Geforce 750 ti in it and added two 2 gb memory ram with the two 512mb that were already in it. So 5gb in it but has like 3.5gb limitation with windows xp 32bit. Also added a wifi adapter chip.
OK now that I'm done telling what I've added here we go. With the memory upgrade and the graphic upgrade I thought it would run super smoothly but nope, it's better but still too slow for things I'm trying to do. So I looked around and I'm thinking maybe even though I upgraded that stuff the computers processor  (cpu) is still not good enough and is standard old and sluggish and needs upgraded to bring this computer "to life"
SOOOOOO Straight and forward to the point, I need someone to tell me what the maximum best CPUpgrade for my Dell Optiplex Gx620 small form is. (Please no "this isn't worth it" comments) thanks.

There may be a limit present in the BIOS (or by the SATA controller) for large drives. Aside from trying a BIOS update (which didn't work), you may be out of luck.

Try clearing the CMOS by moving the jumper and now my dell computer is making a beeping noise and wont turn on, What the heck did I do wrong? I didnt unplug it when I moved the jumper, would that make the computer not work anymore?HELP!!!

A:I have a Dell Optiplex gx620, I removed the jumper from PSWD to RTCRST

You moved the jumper without turning off the computer?
Why did you need to clear the CMOS?
Did you have a password installed that you were trying to remove?
What is the pattern of the beeps? How many beeps and what are the groupings?
We have a GX620 here which we may be able to use to trouble shoot.
Although I do not yet know, very often when you change jumpers while the computer is on and working, you can permanently damage the motherboard. But lets keep our hopes up.

A:Dell Optiplex GX620 Can't boot To windows 10 From USB Screen freezes

GX620 won't  F12 Boot or work with windows 10 USB.  You have to use 32 bit only DVD and only after the region is set and the firmware is upgraded on the DVD drive.  64 bit windows 10 requires BIOS A11 and Pentium D 900 series from 915 to 960.  No point in doing this however since you can never use more than 3.5 gigs of ram.  2 Gigs is required minimum installed ram.

Greetings everyone

I have recently installed windows 7 on my optiplex gx620 SFF and everything was going smooth.

Suddently when windows started i noticed that the audio drivers were not installed, so i downloaded the R145551.exe from dell and attempted and installation.. but something was wrong, the drivers were installed, the audio icon was present and i could increase/decrease the volume but i can't hear any sound coming! I even tested my microphone and everything is completely null.
After that i uninstalled everything and then attempted to just install the driver manually by browsing from the device manager. But still the same results.

I browsed the web and did a lot of googling and i found people had resolved this issue somehow but i couldn't. This problem doesn't seem to happen with boards that have a different chipset. the GX620 has an ICH7 and the GX280 that some other guy mentioned in another forum and made it work had a completely different (ICH0?). I was wondering if somebody has some custom drivers that could work for this OS?

Any help would be appreciated

We have installed a View Sonic Slim Keyboard on an Optiplex GX620. When I installed the drivers from the CD I got the blue screen. So I restored the computer to a previous time. Only today I find the computer with the blue screen when I walked into that office. It didn't happen as fast, but it did happen after about 6 hours of running.Has anyone else had this problem and have a solution? Or will that keyboard just not work on this computer? We are discussing to upgrade our systems with Windows 7 - 64 bit. Some of them are OptiPlex GX620 with Pentium D processor. One of my colleageus started installing Windows 7 - 64 bit to some of them. So far, she said, she haven't found any problem. Does this system support 64 bit OS?

A:Optiplex GX620 with Windows 7 - 64bit

Officially no, Dell has not listed this system for Windows Vista or Windows 7 compatibility and as such no drivers are officially available directly on the drivers and downloads page. It only officially supports 32 bit and 64 bit Windows XP. This means it should be 64 bit compatible. I would run the Windows 7 upgrade advisor to be sure it is 64 bit capable.
Unofficially it will definitely work with the 32 bit and is highly likely to work with the 64 bit. Many of the system drivers will be native to Windows 7 and/or can be taken from other Optiplex models. I have installed the 32 bit version on a GX520 for example which is very similar. In your case I would install Windows 7 following my instructions below without activating, this will give you a 30 day evaluation to see how well it runs before wasting any licenses. You should know how well it runs within a couple of hours however.
An important note on the hardware, do you have 4 GB of RAM in each system? If not I recommend you upgrade them using crucial memory or install the 32 bit version of Windows 7, upgrading the RAM to 4 GB is more recommended. See here for crucial memory, it says maximum of 4 GB but also states 4 slots that can hold 2 GB each. Run the Crucial scan on one of your machines. If you are buying RAM for multiple of these systems, it may be worth sticking 4×2 GB in one to see how much RAM it can address with a 64 bit OS (you can remove 4 GB of the RAM after the test to put in another unit). My GX620 currently has two 1GB memory modules but as I now have Windows7 64-bit, what is the maximum memory I can install?
The upgrade section says 4GB (with the warning that a 32-bit OS will see less than this) but since a 64-bit OS can see more than 4GB (my Studio XPS has 6GB) why can't I fill the slots with 2GB modules?

A:Optiplex GX620 memory limitation

The GX620 can support 2 gig modules.  With 4 memory slots and a 64 bit CPU and OS it will see 8 Gigs of Ram in bios but you cant use 8. You can only use 3GB or 3.5GB. You CANNOT utilize more memory than 3.5 Gigs even when you install a 64-bit version of your OS This is a GX620 Limitation.   Models with Pentium D also support NX and the other requirements for Windows 8.

Recommended Upgrade

I doubt it's plug and play; to illustrate, a relative replaced a burned out 6450 with an 8400GS, and Windows installed the default VGA driver and left it that way. The screen showed a big black border, and the resolution was sub-optimal. Installing the correct software from NVidia eliminated the border and brought full resolution.I'd say the card will work, but you'll have to install the driver (which is not difficult). I have a Sapphire 6570 installed in my GX620, with excellent results.

I read many posts about the opportunity to upgrade an Optiplex GX620 from a Pentium 4 to a pentium D. upgrading up to a D 930 or a D 960 seems good (according to the feedbacks).
Intel developed a lot of Dual Core processors. For example Pentium E 5500
When we look at the specs we can see that the socket is the same (LGA 775), and the FSB (800 mhz required) also. The voltage of the E5500 seems to match with the voltage of the D or 4 . I understand that E5500 has a smaller TDP (65 W) than a pentium D and should not give problem with heat..
My question is : can we upgrade an optiplex GX 620 from a Pentium 4 to a pentium E 5500 ? and, if it is, does it worth it?

Frankly, you don't really want to upgrade this machine. It has a Pentium 4 2.8 GHz processor, a non-upgradeable proprietary power supply, and only an AGP slot for a graphics card, and even then it only accepts a low profile card. Just about the cheapest PC you can buy right now will outperform this machine several times over.

I'm trying to install a Plextor PX-740 DVD writer in a Dell Optiplex 170L. The case is the same as for a Dell Dimension 2350, with three normal sized (half height) bays for 5 1/4 inch drives, one of which as a CD burner in it. Ideally I would want to simply replace the CD burner with the DVD writer.

It's the Dell case that bugs me. This upgrade would be no problem with a standard PC mini-tower case, but the Dell case is designed in their own annoying way. I figured out how to get one of the metal sides off, but the other metal side (the one closest to the motherboard) is integral with the top of the computer case and is riveted on. Once I got the metal side off, I was only able to unscrew one of the screws holding in the CD-Writer drive. The other side is behind a stylishly curvaceous panel and is inaccessible. I thought the drive bays might come out, but they also appear to be riveted to the case. Not being able to get the other metal side off, I have no idea whether there might be two more screws attaching the CD-Writer to the other side of the drive bay, which is normal unless you are like me and leave screws off.

I don't know why the office bought Dells. I can't stand them in a lot of ways, one of which is the problems I run into every time I try to work on one. Surely I don't have to drill out rivets just to change a CD drive...

Had a video problem, reformated drive installed drivers with no problem, except the soundmax audio driver R56339. When I try to install I get error message--driver not found, reboot system and run setup again. Would appreciate any solutions. Thank you.

Purchased OptiPlex 3040 with Windows 7 Factory downgrade install.  Now want to install Windows 10 from the Dell supplied OEM DVD.
Have followed these instructions

but neither of them work.
After changing the BIOS settings & re-booting I get a Dell SupportAssist screen with a white cross inside a red circle and the only option is a shutdown button.
Anyone else experienced this and have a solution ?

I was thinking about purchasing the Dell Optiplex 620 and I was wondering if it was compatible with windows 7? If it is, what do I need to do to get windows 7?

Thank you in advance for your time.

Dell lists XP only as supported OS for the Optiplex 620 -

Whatever (new) system you purchase should come with Windows 7 pre-installed.

Hi, all.

I bought at GX620 off eBay a while back loaded with Win7 but it only had 1.5GB of RAM. Because of the slowness I recently bought two sticks of 2GB DDR2 RAM to load into it.

I just loaded the RAM in and no luck. Upon boot all I get is the Dell splash screen and it freezes up, the load bar doesn't progress at all. I tried one stick at a time in each slot and booting again each time still has no success. Unplugging peripherals (sans mouse and keyboard) also had no effect.

Anybody have a suggestion on how to help me out? I appreciate all and any input!

A:New RAM in Dell GX620

The Dell OptiPlex GX620 is a several years old model and has driver support only for Windows XP.
If you bought yours on eBay, there's a 99% chance that it has a non-genuine copy of Windows 7.
What's the exact "service tag" number and/or "express service code" number on yours?
Is it running Windows 7 Home Premium or Professional or Ultimate, 32-bit or 64-bit?

ok, this is why I build my own systems, I have this optiplex gx620 that was given to me because my other system went down. its only got 512mb of memory and its slow, I want to upgrade to 2gigs. heres the problem im having, Im getting 50 different answers on what ram to use in it, aparently dells are picky?? the bios are useless so I guess I have to find specific stuff. im looking for 1.8v memory, but cant seem to fond any that runs at 4-4-4-12, except gskill and patriot, not sure if the dell will run that. theres ocz and crucial, but the 4-4-4-12 stuff that have runs at 1.9v and 2.0 respectivly. heres another kicker, ive been told that this board will only run at 1.8v, makes sense, well the crucial memory selector is actually giving me ballistix which is 2.0v as compatible. really confused and need help. is this thing as picky as people make it out to be?? what mem will work. thanks.

Hi all, I'm hoping you can help me with ideas to fix an intermittent problem.

I have a PC which restarts itself ocasionally without warning. I have the System > Advanced > Restart Automatically unchecked, but don't get a BSOD. I can't see anything that looks helpful in the system error logs (event viewer). (I do have a file windows/minidump/mini*.dmp but I don't know how to make use of it.)

It's a Dell Optiplex GX620 (which has been sitting in its box in a cupboard for a few years and has only just been got out) with Windows XP. It was doing this when I first got it (unpatched for years, obviously) and also now, fully patched with MS Update.

There doesn't seem to be any clear pattern to the reboots except that they happen more frequently when I try to install software.

I've run the Extended Test in the Dell Diagnostics suite in the recovery partition multiple times with no errors (I found a post in another forum suggesting to run the Data Bus Stress Test multiple times to catch the error, but no luck).

The one thing I've noticed is that it only happens when I'm running Kaspersky Internet Security, although this could just be coincidence of course - I've tried both 2009 and 2010 (incidentally, have a 30 day trial while I wait for a key, but this shouldn't be an issue, right?). I've done a full system scan with Kaspersky and it didn't find any malware.

My impression is that Windows, the PC and Kaspersky are all ok on their own, but put together in t... Read more

Well reading the minidump file is always a good place to start.

For information on the here's a link to the microsoft page pertaining to these files:

Also since you are running a PC thats a couple years old without leaving a box, your drivers will probably not be up to date and occasionally windows updates can cause problems in some devices if the drivers are not up to date.

Oh, and you failed to mention with service pack you are running, I will assume SP3 since you tell us the PC is completely updated.

Friends I'm pretty sure I have used Dell's flash util under Windows 7 previously with no issues. But today I'm trying to run their BIOS update A11 for an Optiplex GX620 and it fails under my normal [admin priv.] account, under the Administrator account, under the Administrator account "Run As Administrator". It will load, give the "ok to proceed" but when it tries to config to run at Boot time, it fails.

This system has Windows 7 Ultimate, 32-bit

Anyone have a cure for this disease?

A:Dell Opti GX620 Bios Flash utility under Win7 Ultimate?

One of two ways,

1. If you have a floppy drive,

Drivers and Downloads

and follow the instructions under "Run the BIOS update utility from DOS environment (Non-Windows users)".

2. If the above isn't available (no floppy drive) and if you have a spare hard drive (or even a second drive with a small partition will do in a pinch), install XP on it (don't need to worry about updates or anything, only going to need it long enough to run the bios update) and then run the bios update from there. If you do decide to go this route make sure to disconnect the drive with Windows 7 on it (and any other drives) so you don't mess up the 7 install, and end up with a broken bootloader.

When the PC starts up, the dell loading screen begins. Normally this takes around a few seconds but this time it didn't end. We've tried all the diagnostic tests and they all came back fine. Also tried disconnecting all external cables (ie headphones, ethernet etc). Powered on and off multiple times and no change.
By the way, I don't know if this is related or not, but last night before the issue occurred, I was randomly logged out. Once it logged me back in, everything was closed and there was a small square of like TV static towards the bottom right corner. I restarted and it fixed the issue there but I don't know.
Thanks in advance, Sean

I just purchased a (barely) used Optiplex 960 from my office (my employers often sell used equipment to employees if they want to get rid of it).  It's in great shape, clean, and all the hardware seems to work, except for the fan speed controller.  I know it's supposed to adjust the speed of the cooling fan depending on how hot the CPU is getting, but it's not doing that.  The fans seem to stay on low / medium speed even when the CPU is pushing 70 degrees C according to Speedfan...which is WAY too hot.  The only way I can get the fan to speed up is by disabling the auto-speed control in the BIOS and leave it on 100% constantly.
Anybody have any suggestions?  Is the temperature controller damaged, or do these systems normally run hot?  Thanks!

Trying to fix this thing up for my grandaughter. It has a 200 mh. processor 128MB ram and a 40GB hard drive. Now it seems that the mb. drive controller is inop. At least that is what it says when I try to boot. I was told that it wouldn't support the 40 GB drive anyway so I bought a PCI ATA card. By the way I installed a 6GB. drive to see if the MB.would boot it,and it said the same thing. How can I get it to boot? It seems impossible because I need the PCI card to get to the drive and the system needs the driver for the PCI card to run the drive. Is there any chance???

Supported microprocessor types: Intel® Pentium® 4, Pentium® D, Celeron®, or Core™ processor
DDR2 RAM should be installed in matched pairs so you'd need to install 2 of them. But there's no point installing 4 GB of RAM with a 32-bit version of Windows which can only use ~3.0 - 3.5 GB of RAM. Note, this system supports 2 GB RAM modules but only those running at 533, 667 MHz. It doesn't support 2 GB modules running at 800 MHz, but apparently will support smallar modules running at 800 MHz.

That PC uses SATA drive controllers . . Installing XP on a SATA drive requires an additional step:

However, Most newer BIOS allow an Alternate method for SATA . . Go into the bios and check the "Sata Operation" setting,

change it to "Raid Autodetect/ATA if it is not already. Now try to install XP ( could be IDE Mode, Compatibility Mode or Legacy Mode - different BIOS use different terms )

some will say IDE instead of ATA)

If there are no such settings you'll need to slipstream the sata drivers on the XP CD, follow the instructions in this guide :

You can get a reinstallation guide specific to your Dell here

Are you using the Dell Reinstalltion disc? . . if so is it SP3? Those have the Intell SATA drivers

Alas, the unit recommended to me in that thread is sold out.

I have been looking at similar units of the same model number but, as best I can tell, although they have the same name/model, the Dell Optiplex 780 seems to come in two different case sizes, a MF and a SFF, the SFF being the smaller of the two.

The SFF seem to be the more plentiful and about $50 more expensive, while having only 1TB SATA compared to the MT having 2TB.

Am I right in thinking that there are indeed two case sizes; and, if so, which is the preferable ?

Hello,I purchased an Optiplex 380 a couple of years ago which came with 2x2GB RAM @ 1066Mhz and now I think time has come to upgrade to at least 8GB. So, I tried a kingston value ram of 4gb @ 1333Mhz and unfortunately it beeped with 1 and 3 diagnostic LEDs lit. I know that the Dell manual says a maximum of 4GB ram but I have seen people here on dell forums running 2x4GB without any problems, so according to my thinking, maybe the bus frequency is the problem? shall I try 1066Mhz? Crucial's site also suggests up to 1600Mhz so whats the confusion here?P.S. I have latest BIOS A07 flashed.

Thank you for reaching out.
Did you try 8GB(4+4) or Does it beeps even with a 4GB stick in one slot?
Try each stick on both the slots, If that fails, you may try 1066 mhz.
P.S:  We haven't tested 8GB configuration on this motherboard from the factory, If none of the steps works, You may have to revert back to 4GB.

Hi everyone,

I have been looking up about getting a replacement for my existing CPU which is an Intel Core i5 (Version: 2400) and upgrading to the new Intel Core i5 4460 which does support HD better for what I needed, such as movies and gaming (I only need up to 60FPS).

But other than that, I have been looking either at a portable GPU. The GPU is called a Zotac GeForce GTX 960 4GB (from NVidia). I just want to know if this will fit and will it work well with my PC?

I just want to know if the new Intel Core i5 4460 will fit in the Optiplex 390's motherboard, the same for the Zoatac GeForce GTX 960 4GB GPU.

But I would be interested to see what you have come up with any other CPU/GPU recommendations for this Dell Optiplex 390 Desktop.

Many thanks,

A:New CPU/GPU for Dell Optiplex 390

Because the optiplex comes in three form factors, which one is it? The Desktop ones? or the smaller one?

Anyways, to be able to upgrade to a Haswell processor you'll need a new motherboard aswell (Those with H81 chipset will do). The Zotac GTX 960 will work provided you have enough juice from the PSU to be able to supply the graphics card

my guess would be that this was after some kind of storm or power surge. can you see the bios loading? in order to diagnose this you will have to have parts that are known to be good and go through the machine one piece at a time. I searched the forum but couldn't find a conlusive solution to installing a second drive (SSD) in the floppy area of Dell Optiplex 755 SFF.
Would someone be able to suggest a way out?
I've just upgraded to Win10 (64-bit) from WinXP with 4GB RAM and the system is performing well to my liking and use. I now wish to move the Win10 installation to my newly bought 120GB SSD (7.0mm thick) and install my other 1TB HD in place of the stock 80GB HD that I'm running Win10 off of now. I wish to keep the Optical Drive (as kids need it for school work etc), but the floppy can go now.
Since there're power connectors for the MB just under the Floppy Drive bay, any standard 3.5" - 2.5" tray doesn't fit. The only thing that fits well is the floppy drive enclosure. I don't know how to mount the SSD on it.

First off, the amber light on the monitor means simply that the monitor is turned on but not getting a signal from the computer. So, I think your problem is in the computer.

These are the possibilities as I see them in roughly their most likely to least likely order:
Bad power supply
Bad video card
Bad main board or processor or both
Bad memory chip

Rule out graphics or other problems by running an operating system from a usb or cd. My favourite is Linux Mint which you can download from here.

Download - Linux Mint

Burn the .iso to a disc and boot from it. If it boots ok then the hardware is fine then it's a software issue. If that's the case try and get another installation disk from a friend or wherever and try that.

If the CD with Linux Mint on it can't load then you have a graphics fault perhaps caused by the power fluctuations.

I think this model has integrated graphics but also has space for a pci-express graphics card. So if you can get hold of one of those you could try that..

You may have a motherboard with bad capacitors. A Google search turns up a number of hits with people having that problem with certain production runs of Dell Optiplex models.

With the computer turned off, look for any electrolytic capacitors (shiny aluminum cans with heat-shrink plastic covering) that are bulging or oozing liquid.

What version of Windows XP Pro do i need to source to allow me to use the COA off of the side of the tower?

Any Dell Reinstall CD that is XPSP2 should work. Since it is OEM it will not work with Retail disks or Upgrade disks.

Any thoughts?

A:[SOLVED] need help with Dell optiplex 360

Did you set a Bios Password? If so, you need to type that in. Sounds like you have a stuck key on the keyboard. Turn the keyboard upside down and blow out the keys with a can of compressed air. Try a different keyboard

A:Dell Optiplex 755 -- can I install a GTX 460?

Hello maaz, I do believe a GTX 460 would fit inside of the case, but it would be a tight fit, also, you'd need to upgrade your PSU to handle the new GPU.
How much are you looking to spend?

Everything was working fine until yesterday but now my Dell computer won't turn on. In case it helps, we have Windows 7 professional installed, hardware Intel Core TM i3-2100 CPU @ 3.10GHZ, 4GB RAM, 64-bit OS.
I tried unplugging everything, plugging power cable back in and holding power button for 20 seconds but no luck.

A:Dell Optiplex 990 won't turn on

Hello akurnyc,
Try disconnecting the power cable & then holding the power button for about 10 seconds (this forces the capacitors to discharge).  If that doesn't help, try using a different outlet.  If you're using a surge protector, power strip, or battery backup/UPS, then try connecting directly to the wall.
Let us know what you find out.

I am at work trying to rebuild a Dell Optiplex GX260, My Windows 2000 SP2 CD that came with it, appears to have insufficient drivers for it. Primarily for the NIC or Ethernet Controller.

Is an Ethernet Controller a NIC?

Any tips where I can get drivers? I cant find any on the dell site.

I also don't have access to a windows XP cd that may have drivers on it.

please give any insight

A:x64 bit cpu for old dell optiplex gx280

There is no point to X64 cpu in this model.  The GX620 is the same and has a 3.5 gig ram limit based on a chipset limitation not on 64 bit OS or not. You have a Hyper thread single core P4.
Zero advantage to EMT64 cpu on this model.
Intel didn't implement 64 bit until the 600 series on socket 775
The GX280 is too old.  The GX620 can go all the way to windows 10 but it too cannot take advantage of more than 3.50 gigs of ram regardless of the physical amount installed.

Sorry if this is a really lame question, but I have almost no experience with computer hardware.
I just bought a new Dell Optiplex 780 to run a sound system in a theater, and I need to transfer the sound card from the old computer to the new (for reference, its a Delta M-Audio Audiophile 2496), but the new Dell came in a low profile case, and the card doesn't fit.
So the best option seems to be to just buy a cheap (20-30 dollar) full size case and transfer the computer wholesale over so the PCI card fits, but I've been told that the style of case matters.
Any suggestions as to a good case at a cheap price that the components will fit in properly would be greatly appreciated.

A:Dell Optiplex needs new case

Unfortunately you can't. These are proprietary Dell designs and they do not fit any standard case on the market.

So you need to use either a USB sound card, a half-height sound card, or buy a different computer.

I am working on a Dell OptiPlex GS for one of my less fortunate friends. (this thing is a p166 with 32MB ram and a 56kbps modem. No speed demon, thats for sure). Anyway, I can't find enough info on this machine to access the BIOS. I know I am missing something but I can't figure out what. Delete does'nt work, F1 either. The machine in question can be found at

A:Anyone know how to get into the BIOS of a Dell OptiPlex Gs?

OptiPlex Systems

On all Pentium-based OptiPlex systems, press the Ctrl + Alt + Enter keys at the same time, or the F2 key as the system powers up.

Darn I have to read what I paste, the keys where bracketed and that's why it didn't make any sense, removed brackets.

I have a Dell Optiplex GX270. It is a SFF. Is this equivalent to a Micro-ATX?
I wish to replace motherboards and use a ZOTAC 9300-A-E.

Dell use their own PSU's in these models and you can only use the correct board.

Hello, I was told in one of the forums that a Intel CORE 2 QUAD PROCESSOR Q9650 SLB8W 3.0GHz 12M CACHE 1333 MHz FSB would work in my Desktop. I purchased it on E-bay and installed it with the already upgraded bios A22. It did not work. I tried to install my original cpu that did work and now I cannot get it to even post. I have removed the battery for an hour and that did not help. I tried a different video card in case that was the problem. I get absolutely nothing on the monitor. I am at a loss. Does anybody know a trick or two to get it back up and running. Thank you very much for your time. Robb

A:Dell Optiplex 755 Cpu Problem

Best option is to post on the Dell forums, where those familiar with Dell's can help you. Dell Desktop Forum

The Dell specs list these 3 CPU types: The Q series, based on what the specs show would not be supported.
l Intel? Core™2
l Intel vPro™
l Intel Celeron?

Hello Forum-I have an old dell desktop optiplex G1. It has worse than lousy 2 mb of video.Appearantly this video is on board as I can see no card, though it appears it has slots to accept cards. I looked every where on the net(or almost), but very limited info is available for the upgradability of this old unit. I seen some video cards(32 & 64mb) on ebay that looked as though they may fit slots, but I`m not sure they would work. Also could this grampa`s CPU be upgraded to say PIII(100or133 mhz bus). If so what parts may I need to upgrade? Thank-You very much for your knowledgeable advice.

A:Upgradability for Dell Optiplex G1

Not a lot you can do with that system. I don't believe there is an AGP video slot, but you should be able to add a PCI (not PCIe) video card. It's a Pentium II so the best you could do would be to upgrade to a faster PII. Since it's got a 400 that just leaves the 450 and that would be a useless upgrade.

In the end I can't see that it's worth doing anything with it.
