HP Envy TouchSmart 15 - touch screen not working

Q: HP Envy TouchSmart 15 - touch screen not working

Please help! The touch screen on my Envy laptop no longer works. I've tried restarting and shutting off, but to no avail. When I go to PC Info, it tells me that: "No pen or touch input is available for this display." This is obviously incorrect, because my laptop is, in fact, a touch screen. I haven't installed any programs that would have affected the feature. Thanks,Jerry

The touchscreen stopped working suddenly. At first i though it was like a normal failure and that will get fixed by turning the pc of or restarting so I did not pay attention to it until now that I had restart my pc multiple times. Currently running win10. I started to believe it was because of an update a few days ago since it was when the problem started. I have checked for the HID-compliant Touch Screen driver.

It seems from the forum posts that there are many many people with the same issue, and no solution to the problem!  When will HP take responsibility for this issue and provide a solution? The issue is the "Touchsmart" screen is no longer responding to touch!!!  What's the point of a touch screen laptop if it does not respond to touch!!!! I have been through all the proposed solutions ... device manager... etc. etc... but still nothing... Under System: Pen and Touch it says: It says no pen or touch input is available for this display Please can HP help its customers resolve this issue?

A:HP Envy - Touchsmart Touch Screen Not Working - Windows 10

Hello @HP-Envy, Welcome back to the HP Forums! I came across your post and want to help you restore the functionality of the touchscreen on your HP ENVY TouchSmart m7-j120dx. This seems to be a driver related issue, but could be related to something else as well. To being, please perform a hard reset. Next, I recommend restoring the BIOS so the notebook will research the hardware that it has installed. HP Notebook PCs - Restoring the BIOS Once the BIOS restoration is complete follow the steps in this touchscreen troubleshooting document, I know you have completed most of the steps from it but doing it after the BIOS restoration is key. HP Notebook PCs - Touch Screen Issues (Windows 10)(If component tests is not an option in step four of that document, use the testing for hardware failures document) HP Notebook PCs - Testing for Hardware Failures (Windows 10, 8) I look forward to your reply with the results!

The laptop: HP Envy TouchSmart 15 Notebook PC (15-j173cl)Windows 8.1 Pro The problem: I use an external monitor, so my laptop is usually shut.  Randomly, my touch screen THINKS something is touching it, which disrupts whatever I'm doing.  I would like to disable the touch screen completely, as I do not use it at all. I thought maybe the latch wasn't closing properly, but the screen resolution changes when I shut the laptop, so it KNOWS it's closed and switches to the proper resolution for my external monitor, but it DOES NOT disactivate the touch screen, and some dirt or something is touching it, changing where my mouse is pointed, where I am typing, etc. I have tried cleaning the screen and keyboard with compressed air. The problem happens randomly; sometimes when I CAD for the day, sometimes after hours of working.

hi The latest Windows 10 update broke my touch screen.  I had already installed the Windows 10 Annivesary Update.  Following the HP instructions to fix the touch screen not working issue did not work.  If I roll back the Windows update, things work again.  The touch screen driver does not appear to have been directly updated, as I cannot rollback the driver (date is in 2006 and the rollback option in device manager indicates that there is no rollback driver available.) Any idea if a new driver is available or if there is another solution so that I don't have to rollback a cumulative Windows update? Thanks Jim

About a month ago the cursor on my laptop screen disappeared and the clickpad stopped working. The touch screen still worked. I closed it down as I had to run and when I came back it was back. Nothing wrong after that. This morning I was on my laptop walked away for a minute and came back and the same thing happened. This time it's not coming back though.

I went into the control panel and installed all the updates that were available but that didn't help. Any other ideas of what to do to get it to work again? From what I can tell there isn't a "shutoff" for the clickpad that I might have hit.

Any help would be much appreciated!

I have tried all of the steps except step 6 and 7 which asked for system restore and recovery from the following link:-http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03488148 I want to know if there is any way that I can get my touch screen working without performing system reset as I have some important softwares running, and dont have an external drive to backup my data in case of factory reset? Note:Also I am unable to install a fresh copy of windows as I have forgotten BIOS password, halt code show in 75104257.

Bought a brand new Envy last Thursday, touchscreen did not work.  Called support and they remotely worked on it for a few hours ultimately having to restore to factory settings, still did not work.  Exchanged laptop at store yesterday and the touchscreen on this one does not work either.   Per the sales person at the store the touchscreen should work with computer in laptop or tablet mode, is this correct? Is there a known issue with these that I should choose another model?   Is there something that has to be enabled?  I have checked the drivers and all is newest version and enabled. Thanks for any help.

@bskwik?, welcome to the forum. Have you tried updating the drivers using the Device Manager?  You can do this by going into the Device Manager / Disk drives (DVD ROM) - Human interface devices (Touch screen) / right click on each / select your device / select Update Driver Software / Search automatically for updated driver software.  This will find an updated driver if one is available. I do this at least one per month.  This way I know which drivers are being updated in case there is a problem.  I can uninstall it.

@Avious_Avi, Thanks for posting. Personally, since you mentioned the touchscreen worked before Windows 8.1, I would do a Windows refresh: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03538721 You can also try updating the drivers of the product to try and get that functionality back.

Dear Bleeping.

I noticed my touch screen has stopped working on my HP Touchsmart.  I don't use it a lot so I'm not entirely certain when it happened.   I've tried the fixes listed on the HP site with no luck.  Comp is about a year old so I don't think it's a hardware issue.  I've seen some sites where the windows update will cause problems - not sure.

I can't seem to find anything in control panel that helps - like the touchscreen/tablet options or the pen/touch options.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not too sure what is the problem with my girlfriend's computer, it was working perfectly fine for the past 3 years we've had it but all of a sudden when she came home and tryed to wake it up from sleep mode, it was just a black screen...we then proceeded to reset the computer and unplugged the power cable from the back and let it sit for a little over an hour. I came back thinking maybe the computer just overheated or something and it needed to cool down but instead every single time I turn it on...the light on the top goes on, i hear the fans start up like it normally would if there were no problems but the screen is just black and doesnt change...i even let it sit like that for a good hour or so and nothing seemed to happen. I read on other HP forums to try to press F10 as the computer starts up to open BIOS but my keyboard won't even light up or work. Does anyone have a fix for this? Is it internal or what? I thought maybe it would be something wrong with the MOBO but i would think if it was, it wouldnt even turn on at all...I appreciate any responses, Thanks. (Also we did update to windows 10 but that was about 1-2 months ago and there was no problems at all after installing it)

If anyone is thinking of buying an HP Envy all in one touch screen computer then DON'T do it! I bought one less than 9 months ago. The touchscreen failed and rendered the whole computer inoperable. It took several hours on the phone to get them to agree to take it in for repair. After three weeks they claimed to have repaired it and sent it back. They changed all the settings and locked them so I could not put the settings back to how they were. I don't like working on a black screen with white writing!! It took another couple of hours on the phone to get them to fix it. Now less than two months later the exact same problem with the touchscreen has arisen again. It has taken two days to get them to agree to take it back in for repair. They cannot collect it until next Thursday. It will take another two weeks after that before it's repaired and returned to me. I am really really disappointed with this machine and warranty service especially so as it was very expensive!

HP refusing to help as its out of warranty (i bought it brand new sealed last month but for some reason warranty is out???) i called HP who told me to call Currys as that is where it was originally bought by the person who sold it to me.  I called Currys and they told me to call HP Parts to see how much the parts would cost on top of a 50 labour charge, I called HP parts who told me they cant find any parts for my laptop on there system and they are unable to help. I would of thought that HP would have all parts for all laptops consdering ITS A HP LAPTOP!!!!!! I paid 500 for this laptop less than a month ago and i have no easy way to fix my problem can anyone help???

After a windows auto update my touchscreen no longer responds. I think it is a driver issue. My windows is INSISTING that the best driver is this generic driver from 2006. The display also shows up in the wrong place in the device manager. It's not in the HID list. I'm also having issues with the wireless since an update. It, for lack of a better term, stutters. Other devices will connect just fine and stay connected. But this laptop will drop the connection or simply not 'see' the network. Any help is appreciated.

Hello, I bought an HP Envy 15-J170us laptop which now has a cracked touch screen. I don't know how it got cracked, I put it in my padded PC backpack and set it in the back of my car, with nothing on top of it, and when I opened it up it had several cracks in the display radiating from one of the microphone holes (at least I assume it those are microphone holes) in the top of the glass. If this could be covered by my warranty it would be great, but if not, I need to know how I can get the touch screen replaced. Thanks, Mathew Pierce

If you purchased accidental damage protection plan, then this would be covered as a part of this plan. This is not covered as a part of standard warranty. You can go to Manuals section and download the Maintenance and Service Guide which has the part number and the procedure to replace the screen: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Home.jsp?prodTypeId=321957&prodSeriesId=5354982

hi Hersh,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

First do a Power Drain
     (If the battery is removable)
Remove AC and Battery and hold the power button down for 15 sec.
Turn the computer back on and see if the Touch capability is now detected under System Properties,
                  If not
I suggest you contact Lenovo Technical Team about the Issue as this may be a device detection issue.

The touchscreen stopped working suddenly on my Envy TouchSmart Sleekbook 4-1115dx. At first i though it was like a normal failure and that will get fixed by turning the pc off or restarting so I did not pay attention to it until now that I had restart my pc multiple times. Currently running win10. I started to believe it was because of an update a few days ago since it was when the problem started but all drivers and everything is up to date. I have checked for the HID-compliant Touch Screen driver and had to  show hidden divices in order to find it. I cannot enable it and when i check in the properties the following message displays: "Currently, this hardware device is not connected to the computer. (Code 45)To fix this problem, reconnect this hardware device to the computer." I have no idea on how to connect or how it got disconnected. I come from a similar thread but did not solve my problem. I have been researching this for hours and have not found and answer. Help please!

Several weeks ago I started to have a problem with my cursor suddenly disappearing.  It can be brought back with the track pad, but disappears immediately again if I touch the screen. If I plug in a mouse and only use that the cursor stays.  The only fix generally is a reboot although following one occurrence it spontaneously reappeared as a functional touch screen cursor sometime after disappearing. This question was posted on a Windows forum and per the recommendations there  I have updated several drivers from within windows device manager (or found them to be the latest) and by downloads from HP site (chipset,   There was a previous similar question for Windows 8 in which the solutions included updating the system event utility from HP, which I do not believe I have done if that is still a potential solution, The problem persists  I also had an occasion yesterday, just the second such, where the cursor was moving on its own and I was unable to use or control it or make any selections and had to do a hard shutdown/restart. Hardware failing?

Tonight I upgraded from Windows 8 whereby my touchscreen worked perfectly to Windows 10 whereby my touchscreen on my HP Envy laptop is totally non-responsive. Is there a fix for this problem? Does HP have a new driver or software that will fix this problem? Is this a Microsoft problem that we have to wait until and update? I have read where others have experienced the same. I cannot imagine Microsoft not supporting touch screens since it is required in tablets, phones and many cross over laptops and computer monitors these days. Please help

Hi,My Envy 23 Smart Touch recently refused to start.  I search and did the recomended items to try and get it going again, such as:Diconnect all devices, disconnect power, hold power button for 5 sec, power on with F10 key, etc...  have performed this numerous times. No luck.  I don't see the BIOS.  There is power as the hard drive light does do a short light, and the DVD drive does make an initial sound.  Even tried a USN keyboard to see if that would help. I have even reset my CMOS with the jumper pins, checked the battery, unplug/plug hard drive and other cords that attach to the motherboard.  Have reseated the RAM - tried to also boot with just one chip in. Hard drive appears to be ok as I was able to browse its contects when I removed it and attached it to my smart TV (Partitions and folders). Still, no response to the PC other than the quick LED HD light coming on and the quick LED light on the DVD drive -screen remains blank.  This PC is just now 3 years old. Anything else to try? Thanks in advance.Jim

My ENVY 23 Touch screen dioeds not start. I tried all the suggested steps that I could find... As we have two power cords exactly the same wattage, that has been tried as well... Ther light at the back comes on when the power cord is plugged in, but the start button coes not work. Unplugging and holding the start button down for 10 seconds and re starting does not work.Restartting with F10 key down does not work. Nothing seems to do the trick. It happenerd once before and I was able to restart it with a hard start (holding the power button down for 5-10 seconds with power cord off) and restarting. It did work about three weeks ago. Now it does not. Any suggestions?

My ENVY m6-AQ003 x360 touch screen function clicks itself. It clicks really fast in a straight vertical line. I havn't used it in a couple days so when I turned it on and it started clicking my first thought was the mouse was acting up or the touch pad. so I unplugged the mouse and restarted the computer. It continued to do it after the restart so I tried to turn off the touchpad. But the screen kept clicking before I could. Although it has stopped after i played around with it. It seems to keep doing it from time to time a few clicks. I know it is the touch screen function after I realized that the touch screen makes circles where you click and the mouse and touch pad don't. I hope there is a quick fix so I dont' have this problem when I travel in a few days.

Same problem as some of the others with touch screen not responding.  It works part of the time and then stops. BUT this is the weird part...  if I press control/alt/delete and select Task Manager then select "X" to close the box (without doing anything), the touch screen will work again.  It used to work for a day or two at a time.  Now I have to do the Task Manager thing about every 10-15 minutes.  It's driving me nuts!!  At most I have my email and maybe 2-3 browser tabs open.  I am in no way a techie person.  If someone could help me using plain English that would be wonderful. I am not sure exactly at what point it happened but I recently found that the touch screen on my Elite X2 1011 was not working. The pen still functions normally. When checking the pen and touch settings I can only configure the pen settings and only "Pen support" is listed in view pen and touch settings. The touch screen used to work in both the original Windows 8.1 and then also after upgrading to Windows 10. There have been no error messages and the event logs do not seem to indicate any problems; it is as though the machine has just forgotten it is a touch screen. I have tried reinstalling drivers, reinstalling both Windows 10, and going back to Windows 8.1 to no avail. I really loved this little device but ease of use is cut rather drastically without the touch functionality. Has anyone else had a problem like this and have a solution? Any help at all is greatly appreciated.

Greetings,    I have owned this laptop for over 2 years and have encountered many problems which have required me to open up my laptop and remove debree/dust from the interior. My last adventure included removing the fan and heatsink from the inside, but when I assembled the laptop back together it will not start up. When plugged in the white led light still shows next the the charger socket, but the power button will not light up after several tries. The fan does not start to spin either.   I have tried the hold the power for 1 minute idea, but it does not change anything.I have 3 possible conclusion that are very unlikly to me.1.  I worked on carpet and had static  electrickery! Doubt it.2. The harddrive is not working properly3. The memory is not working properlyAny fixes to these above? any other possible causes?

I own an HP Envy TouchSmart 15 Notebook PC product number: E0K05UA#ABA and Model: 15-j053cl

I had a couple plastic screw inserts that hold the right side hinge to the top cover of the laptop break due to very high strength of the hinges which caused the top cover of the laptop to pry apart from the base enclosure when opened (a problem many owners of this laptop model have had). Since I was out of warranty I ordered a replacement on Ebay using the correct part number 720570-001 and disassembled my laptop to make the repairs and loosen the hinges while I was at it. I swapped out all parts being careful to note where and how plugs and ribbons were connected so I could put it back together correctly. Now after having it reassembled it will not turn on.

I get a white LED light to turn on when I plug in the power cord AC adapter (should be amber/orange in color to signify it is charging the battery) but no other sounds lights or signs of life. I have attempted to remove the battery and power cord, pressed the power button for 8-30 seconds to drain power and do a reset and then try to power up with plugging in the power cord but it won’t turn on. I also tried to power up by removing one part at a time including the hard drive, two RAM sticks, and wireless card but still not able to turn on. Do you have any ideas for what may be wrong or steps I can take to troubleshoot? Is this possible a mother board issue? Everything was working fine before embarking on this r... Read more

Hey all, I woke up this morning and started using my computer to find that there were white spots on my computer screen that I had not previously noticed. I have had the computer for two years and haven't had any similar issues. There does not appear to be anything wrong with the pixels, as the color changes appropriately - it's just brighter. Furthermore, the bright spots on the screen heat up much more than the rest of the screen, which remains cool. I also noticed that, though this may be a separate issue, the touch screen isn't responding. Here is an image (it's much more noticeable on a white background): http://imgur.com/09sYisg   Any help is much appreciated!

Hello,  I purchased an HP Envy Touchsmart 15 a little over a year ago. The hinge seems to have come unglued fromt the inside. I read that the HP Envy is prone to this, since the hinge is glued in production as opposed to being fastened with a screw. I'm a graduate student, and I'm unable to use my HP for schoolwork due to the faulty hinge. The computer has been handled carefully, and it's never been dropped. This is my first HP. It was great when it was working; however, a laptop that costs nearly a grand and works only for 1 year due to the construction is extremelhy dissapointing.  I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem and how it was handled by HP. I purchased it through costco, so I should have an extended 2 year warranty on the device.  Thanks in advance,  Alexandria

Hello,  This is my first time on this site and I have been having some trouble with my computer.FIrst of all, my computer is the HP Envy 23 Touchsmart PC and its roughly around 3-4 years old. For all this time, it has been working fine without any problems, but one day I was playing a game on my computer and it randomly shut down. At first, I thought I accidentally kicked a cord, so I made sure every cord was in their sockets tightly. Thinking it was a loose cord that caused it to shut down, I tried to turn it on again. Unfortunately, there was no luck.   In furthur investigation on my computer, I noticed my power cord was making a small beeping/chirping noise every 2-3 seconds with its green light flashing on and off in sync with the green light. What I found interesting was when I unplugged the power cord from the computer, the green light would actually stay solid without it blinking or making any noise. When i replug it back in, it continues to blink and make the small beeping noise again. As a computer amateur, I am afraid to open my computer up and try to fix the problem myself. And I was also hoping for some solutions here on this site before bringing it into a store to get it fixed.  I also updated my computer to Windows 10 if any of that matters. Thank you for your time!

Hello!I bought my computer about 11 months ago for college and the past month it has been having some weird cracking noises when opening/closing the lid. A friend of mine told me to watch out since he had the same computer and it had broken off. I noticed today that theroght hinge is actually starting to come out and the base of the computer is also getting loose. This is very strange since I barely move my computer from the desk since it is so big, plus I have a smaller one that I use to take to classes so I don't mess with this one for stuff that is unnecessary. I wanted to know how this can be repaired.Thank you!

(I coulnd't find any category that best matched my question - I think this is the closest) Hi,  Does any of you know where I could buy an HP Envy TouchSmart 17 Notebook from around 2014 (NOT the new models with the 6th gen core i7)?  I saw that I could get one with an Nvidia GeForce 750M, 4 GB of graphcis DDR3, an i7-4900MQ (quad-core, 2.8 GHz turbo to 3.8 GHz),16 GB of RAM, and dual hard drives.   The Maintenence and Service Guide for the system I'm looking for (as well as other configurations of it) is here: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04091762. I did find one on eBay, however it did not have the exact configuration I want; you can see that listing here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/RB-HP-ENVY-TOUCHSMART-17-J141NR-I7-4700MQ-2-4G-wbr-Hz-16GB-1TB-1-wbr-7-3-034... So, do you guys know of any place I can buy the notebook I'm looking for?  I didn't see the exact one on eBay or Amazon. Thanks very much to all who reply.

Hello,

I've had this problem off an on for probably about a year now. Randomly my clickpad (I think that's what it's called...the mouse on my laptop) stops working. Either the cursor will freeze and disappear when I touch the screen or it just doesn't appear when I open my laptop. I found a fix once that said to just go into the Device Manager and either update or rollback the driver and that worked the first time....but doesn't seem to be the answer as it continues to happen. Luckily I have the touchscreen or I'd be really annoyed but its tough to do work with just the touchscreen. Can anyone help me keep the cursor/clickpad working?

When I update/roll back the driver I go to:
Device Manager > System Devices > Synaptics SMBus > Properties > Driver

Let me know any other info you need!

The hinge on my laptop is broken. I have seen a few posts about this issue but I am a student and can't afford a repair. I'm guessing I'll just have to put up with it until it's finally unusable

A:HP envy touchsmart 17 recovery incomplete

Try changing the date in BIOS to 1/01/2012. Save & Exit. Boot from Recovery and let it run through the process- but on the first reboot it initiates enter BIOS to ensure date is still modified. If so let Recovery resume-if not change it again then resume.

Does anyone know what this part is?  I'd really like to know its part number because I'm trying to order a replacement.  It has the power button on one side, and on the internal side it has screw-ins for the fan and one of the speakers.  It is a black plastic part that runs along the side that the fan blows out and flattens out on both sides.  It was glued to the metal case.  Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!

My Envy 23 TouchSmart All-in-One PC asked to update the firmware the other day, so I said yes.  It seemed like the update never fully downloaded or completed.  Now, when I try to turn on the computer, it comes up with the following error " Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart."  It then goes into a HP logo screen and says " Preparing Automatic Repair", then "Diagnosing your PC", then Blue screen with "Automatic Repair" header "Your PC did not start correctly.  Press "restart" to restart your PC, which can sometimes fix the problem.  You can also press "Advanced options" to try other options to repair your PC." I had a restore USB drive made when I bought the computer 3 years ago, but it doesn't seem to help. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Hello,I purchased an HP Envy Laptop my first year of College, and it has served me well to a point. But recently, I noticed that there was some separation happening in the body of the laptop, just next to the right hinge area. The "metal" and plastic pieces of the casing were pulling apart from each other. This began to cause problems with my disk drive as well, I believe. It became more concerning when it began happening on the right side as well, and likely caused problems with the fan.At this point, the left side of the casing, right by the vent snaps out and back into place whenever I open my laptop. As this is a problem that could be getting worse virtually every time I use the computer, it makes it stressful to enjoy my HP device. If this continues, more problems will undoubtedly arise.I need a solution to this, lest my HP experience be ruined.Thank you for your time. I do appreciate and respect it.

Last year while my daughter was at school she started reporting to me that her HP Envy Touchsmart 15" laptop's case was pulling apart at the corners.  Then she started reporting hearing rattling noises inside the case, then the fan stopped working.   I called HP support, and was told by one person the laptop was under warranty, but that wouldn't be covered because of normal wear and tear.  I called back later and then was told the laptop was not under warranty.  I called back several times, and got a variety of answers all of which added up to between $300 and $500 for repairs on a laptop that I spent $700 on! When she came home for a break from school, I took apart the laptop and removed the debries from the fan (I had purchased a replacement fan which I didn't need) and the laptop stopped overheating.  Next I tackled the hinge problem which by this time had progressed to be both hinges.  The weak plastic connections on the bottom were in bad shape, cracked and peices missing.  So (being the brain surgeon I am ) I decided to use epoxy to more firmly affix the hinges to the case.  That fix has now failed. I have seen and posted on other threads that this type of failure is (despite what HP support says) fairly common in the whole line of HP consumer grade laptops!  Before this, I had mainly used HP business grade laptops and had thought that the quality there would also be in the consumer grade laptops.  My... Hi! So, I am trying to replace my Envy 17's 1TB magnetic hard drive with a 500GB Samsung 850 Evo Sata form factor SSD. I followed the Maintenance and Replacement guide at http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04091762 , but when it came time to actually extract the hard drive from my computer, I could not figure out how to do it. I took a few pictures of what it looks like inside my computer, and they are in here: https://goo.gl/photos/RLmPNcYfzq5Lf5Ah6 . As you can see, there's a blue rubbery case around my hard drive, but pulling on it from either side doesn't seem to budge the hard drive, and I didn't want to apply maximum force in case the bay broke. The manual says to start with unplugging the cable from the hard drive, but I can't seem to unplug it do to the lack of space. Any help would be much appreciated. Sincerely,MajorGeneralRelativity P.S. If you need more info, please let me know

I have a HP ENVY notebook of model TouchSmart 15-j127tx.Using the laptop causes eye fatigue after 15 minutes itself. The White color background is the main cause and I experience eye fatigue  even after trying many combinations of  brightness and contrast. I have adjusted the gamma settings to different levels and even used the Display Colour Calibration within Win 10 to improve the display, but the result is same. At first, I thought only I have this problem, but over the time, people whoever uses my notebook complain the same. I use a different  brand laptop for work, which does not have a touch display. I work on that laptop for more than 10 hours a day but don't feel eye fatigue. But when I use this HP laptop, always, I feel the strain on my eyes. Can anyone help on this. Thanks.

I purchased an HP Envy Touchsmart 23". It was used little over the three years. Last week, when starting up it started to display the message reading "Critical error/your start menu isn't working. We'll try to fix it next time you sign in". After several attempts of power off and restart, hoping the fix would happen, my HP simply stopped responding to the power on switch. The power on switch would light up indicating that the power was on, but the screen would not light up or indicate activity. Best Buy, where I purchased the computer, could not assess the problem locally - they could only arrange to send it to somewhere in BC, for an assessment that would take 2 to 6 weeks. Can anyone help?

Gps3, welcome to the forum. When requesting help you should always include the make/model (i.e. p6-xxxx) of the computer and/or monitor. This information is necessary for us to review the specifications of them.  Also, have you upgraded to Win 10?
