HelloI have the following problem. When I plug my power cable, the mobo led light comes on and when I press the power button only the hdd led light shows and it does so only as long as I press the power button, so as soon as I release the power button, it goes off. One day I decided to leave the PC alone for about a week then I gave a try. (occasionally, the DVD player will come on along with some fans but as soon as u plugged the power button.) Now after a week, I gave a try to my surprise, the fans (I think all of them) came on with quite a loud sound. Since no monitor was connected, I unplugged the powe cable so I could connect the PC to a monitor. To my great surprise, it came on, and was working, I was just prompted to change my date as it showed the year 2000 which I did. I used the PC very well that evening, everything was ok. I even turned off the PC , waited sometime and turned it on (to assure myself it was repaired indeed) and it did came on and worked well. I then turned off the PC normally (nt using the power button). The nxt day, back to square 1. PC won't start, only mobo light shines and hdd led (immediately u plug in power button, hdd led shines for abt 3 seconds then goes off) then when u press power button, it does as I earlier mentioned. Please I'm in dying need of help.I have an intel core duo 2.4Ghz2gb of RAMBuilt in intel graphics card.Thx in advance.

Hello all. First timer here.  I've had my HP Envy for only a year and it won't turn on.  Nothing out of the ordinary happened to it, but when I plugged in the power source and push the power button, the light next to the power input hole flashes 3 times.  I tried letting it sit overnight to see if it was just drained, but still no change.  I took battery out, plugged power cord into laptop and still nothing.  We use wifi as our internet connection and didn't receive and error messages or warnings before this happened. I'm not sure if it's just the power cord itself or something with the laptop. Thanks for any and all help!!! Joe

One night, a couple months ago, I was trying to play a game with a friend when my computer just turned off. It wouldn't turn back on. The next day I was able to get it to come back on and it had some boot message, but I didn't have time to read it before it booted. It was on but wouldn't charge. I turned it off to conserve battery a couple more times before it was permanently dead.I have tried hard reset, but I get absolutely no reaction from my computer.I have replace the internal DC power adapter, but the computer stills doesn't respond (also retried hard reset). So the motherboard should be getting power, but my computer doesn't turn on, charge, or blink. It worked initially after dying, so why doesn't it work now? What kind of options do I have? I would love to send it in to HP to repair (as long as it doesn't cost more than $400), but I have had any luck contacting HP support yet.My computer is out of warranty.

I have a bit of a strange issue with my computer. Forgive me if I'm a little too descriptive, but I'm not sure which details are relevant and which are not for such a problem. First, the specs:

Model: eMachines T2984
Operating System: Windows XP Service Pack 2
Processor: Intel Celeron D Processor 340, 2.93 GHZ, 256K L2 Cache, 533 MHZ FSB
Power Supply Unit: Bestec Model: ATX-250-12E REV: P7
Motherboard: I can't tell, but it appears to be an Intel motherboard by the number of Intel labels on it
RAM: 512 MB DDR SD originally, added 1 GB a couple of months ago
Let me know if you need anything else...

Yesterday, I got home from shopping around 1PM, and I tried to start the computer. I pushed the power button, and nothing happened. I checked all of the cords, and they were all plugged in. Not knowing what else to do, I opened up the case to see if there was something obviously wrong. The only thing that I noticed (other than a bunch of dust) was that the power supply unit was still hot. I shut the computer down about 5 hours earlier after about 20 minutes of use, so it seemed strange that the power supply was still hot. I unplugged the computer just in case there was some sort of fire hazard.

At this point, I called a friend who suggested that the problem might be with the motherboard or the power supply unit.

A few hours later, I plugged it back in to try to get it to work. As soon as I plugged it in, the entire unit suddenly started "running" by itsel... Read more

A:Computer Doesn't Turn on, Fans and Some Lights Turn on Automatically

I would suspect that the Power Supply Unit (PSU) is going south. If you have a spare one laying around, install it and see if the problem goes away.
You can buy a new, better PSU from Newegg for about $40.00. I have used a Thermaltake 430 watt in one of my machines for some time now and it works well.
You will have to check the size of your PSU to be sure a new one will fit into the eMachine.
Here's the page with that PSU on it. It's the last one on the list.

I just put together my first computer 6 months ago. It abruply shutdow in the middle of writing a paper for school. I couldn't turn it back on right away. after trying a few times, it turned on. All the fans are working even the fan on the power supply, the motherboards lights are on. My graphic card in on the motherboard. I think it might be my power supply because when I first put it together I didn't plug in the smaller power connection to the motherboard and the same thing is happening, black screen. It's like my computer isn't giving my monitor any feed. I will have more info when I get home. I can't get in to bios or safe mode.

Hello TSG,

My girlfriend is having a few difficulties with her 500GB Buffalo External Hard Drive. As of this morning, her Laptop hasn't been able to turn on if the HDD is plugged in, and if she plugs the HDD in while turned on the Laptop doesn't recognise it and Blue Screens after a few minutes.

She hasn't had the Hard Drive long (coming up to a year now) and her Laptop is a Fujitsu Siemens with Windows 7 OS.

She says she doesn't want to reformat (though it sounds more of a power issue to me) if possible, as she has a lot of photographs and work on there she doesn't wish to loose.

If anyone has any idea what's wrong, please let us know!

Thanks a lot!

EDIT -
I just advised her to try plugging the EXT HDD into another plug socket, and low and behold it works again. She said however that when she plugged it in, blue sparks flickered at the socket for a few seconds, which really doesn't sound good...

Any idea if it's the HDD's plug itself going... or is it the sockets in her room? <_> Cheers.

I have a dell inspiron n5110, it has the following specs: (2 years since purchse)
core i7
6GB b of RAM
nvidia 525 gt graphics card / 1gb dedicated
Windows 7 64 bit
640 GB HDD
The laptop was working fine yesterday and when i went to sleep i properly turned it off without any errors occurring. Today when i turned it on:-
-the power button turns on
-the three support buttons on the top right corner of the laptop flash
-i can see battery and power notification lights but the hard drive light doesn't blink or turn on
-i can hear and in fact glimpse the fan working.
-the screen shows nothing, it isn't a black screen because that would imply that the screen still turns on but the screen remains off.
-I hear no error beeps or any kind of booting sounds
-I should also probably mention that recently the AC adapter of the laptop wasn't working properly and i had part of its main connecting wires replaced while keeping the circuit board or main work board intact, and it worked fine after that but i am guessing the repair may have something to do with this new issue.
I have tried the hard reset or flea power method, hoping it would solve the problem but it hasn't work even after multiple attempts. The laptop is no longer under warranty and if the issue is dire and i suspect it is, i would have to send the computer to a dell support  and repair center and i have  heard maintenance and repair costs may be as much as the laptop's price depend... My HP Envy Desktop, will not turn on.  I tried unplugging it and replugging in.  The green light on the back turns on when I plug it in, however when I press the on switch, absolutely nothing happens

A:Envy won't turn on

Although you did not state an exact model number, the generic PowerSupply (PSU) troubleshooter can be found here. What is bothersome is your description,  as pressing the switch might cause the green light (as stated) to turn - off.  Perform the step-by-step, without skipping anything.  Have the case open, and observe the CPU fan, and rear fan fan.

My fathers HP Envy M6 will not turn on, or charge.   I have the same computer, so I can troubleshoot a few things using mine.  From swapping the simple parts around, I can tell that the battery and charger is still functioning properly.  When plugged in, there is no charge light.  When my good, fully charged battery is put into his computer, it doesn't turn on.  It seems to be compeltely dead. I have tried the reset where you remove the battery, hold the power button for a minute, plug in the power cord and push the power button....it didn't work.  I understand there is a seperate circuit for the power cord.  If this is defective, would it only be charging that is affected?  I put a known fully charged battery in, and still nothing, so if this circuit is defective, would the computer also be non functional on battery power? I'm looking for any suggestions that might help, or point to the defect.

Hi You have a couple of options as I see it please try the steps given below might help you fix the issue.  1) Disconnect the Adapter & Battery first just press and hold the power button on the unit for 30 seconds and then turn on the unit only using the Adapter and have it checked. 2) Once unit is power on keep tapping the F8 OR F10 key check if you get any display on the screen. 3) If you are comfortable please reseat the Hard drive & Memory and check if you get any display on the screen.  Let us know how it goes! *Although I am an HP employee, I am speaking for myself and not for HP.****Click the White Kudos star to say thanks********Please mark Accept As Solution if it solves your problem**** RegardsManjunath

Hi ambowditch.  so, your notebook having issue with no display & caps lock is blink. caps lock blink is actually was an error which is notebook motherboard was try to tell to user.what u need to do is, try to count how many time caps lock is blink.  try do following troubleshooting first before u count the caps lock blink. 1. perform power cycle. remove battery & power adapter. then press & hold power button for 30 sec. then plug in power adapter only and power on the unit. make sure battery is not installed. if you lucky, may be the notebook will start with HP Logo and windows will load as usual. but if not, try to count how many time caps lock is blink. thanks. ghost. Please mark my post as SOLVED if it has resolved your problem. Hi, it seems that I keep having problems with my HP envy m6 notebook PC (windows 8). I have had this computer for 2 years and it keeps breaking down on me! I was using it this morning around 9:30 AM, and it was running fine, and it was charged. I turned the computer off, then headed to my class. Once I got out of class I went to turn on my computer and it would not turn on! I tried taking out my battery and putting it back in and turning it on, taking the battery out completely and turn it on with the charger hooked up, I even took out the battery, unplugged it and pressed the power button for a minute then put the battery and charger back in and tried turning it on and still nothing! This is very frusterating as I am a college student and I need this laptop for classes and I can't afford to have my computer break down on me anymore! Will someone please help me?! P.S. My led light when my charger was plugged in was not turning on either, and the power adaptor was not warm when plugged in, I don't know if this is one of the reasons why my computer will not turn on.

Hp won't charge. This is an HP refurb and it has worked fine since I bought it in May, until recently when it suddenly stopped charging. I've checked the charging cable and there is no damage, likewise no damage to laptop input. I've tried it at several outlets in my home to assure it wasn't the issue. This model doesn't have an accessible battery. It is completely dead and will not power on. Should I order a replacement cable or take it in for new battery or repair??

I own an HP Envy TouchSmart 15 Notebook PC product number: E0K05UA#ABA and Model: 15-j053cl

I had a couple plastic screw inserts that hold the right side hinge to the top cover of the laptop break due to very high strength of the hinges which caused the top cover of the laptop to pry apart from the base enclosure when opened (a problem many owners of this laptop model have had). Since I was out of warranty I ordered a replacement on Ebay using the correct part number 720570-001 and disassembled my laptop to make the repairs and loosen the hinges while I was at it. I swapped out all parts being careful to note where and how plugs and ribbons were connected so I could put it back together correctly. Now after having it reassembled it will not turn on.

I get a white LED light to turn on when I plug in the power cord AC adapter (should be amber/orange in color to signify it is charging the battery) but no other sounds lights or signs of life. I have attempted to remove the battery and power cord, pressed the power button for 8-30 seconds to drain power and do a reset and then try to power up with plugging in the power cord but it won’t turn on. I also tried to power up by removing one part at a time including the hard drive, two RAM sticks, and wireless card but still not able to turn on. Do you have any ideas for what may be wrong or steps I can take to troubleshoot? Is this possible a mother board issue? Everything was working fine before embarking on this r... Read more

Hi, I have recently purchase (5 days ago) a HP Envy 15-J151SA, but its started to play up already. I had used my laptop yesterday at uni and had run the battery down to about 15%, so I plugged the power pack in as normal and charged the laptop to 100%. When I came to unplug the charger, the laptop just instantly turned off without warning. I thought this was very odd until I tried to turn the laptop back on to no response at all, no lights, no flashing, no nothing. I thought I'd plug the charger back in again and as soon as I plugged the charger in the light on the power button flashed oncw and then when pressed the laptop loads as if nothing had happened. Obviously when I load up apps such the internet and MS Word it says it wasn't closed properly and asks if I want to restore where I left it at. I have looked at other forums who have suggested battery tests (which come back as ok) and tries to recalibrate the battery but this hasn't solved anything, I have tried use the reset function (hold power and the beats button) but I don't have a beats button.  I know this has started to be covered already but the discussion was never finished. This was the original post: I have discovered that the keyboard backlighting won't turn off. The backlight on/off key is labeled as F5. I press it, but nothing happens. I've also tried pressing fn+f5, but that doesn't do anything either. I had been leaving the backlight on, but now I want it to only be on when I press the f5 key. Why won't the backlight turn off? I am having the exact same issue. I followed the instrustions of the helper, which were: Can you please get to the Desktop Screen of Windows by pressing the Windows Key and ?D? keys together and then press the F5 key? As you might know, F5 is used for refreshing a Window/Page. Do you see the Desktop Icons getting refreshed? This is to make sure that the F5 key is working or not?If you got confused with that suggestion, please open MS Word and then press the keys ?Fn? and ?F5? together and let me know whether you get the ?Find and replace? Window? I didn't understand the first part, but the second part I got. I opened Word and pressed Fn and F5 together and can confirm that the 'Find and Replace window appeared. However, I have no idea what to do from here or how to fix the problem, please help me. Also bear in mind please that I am 16 years old and know pretty much nothing about computers. Also, I only got this laptop for Christmas 2015 and am not very familiar with everything yet.

A:How do i turn off the Internal speakers on my HP ENVY 23-d02...

Hi, The answer to your question depends on your reasons for wanting to turn off the speakers.  Recently, I noticed that when I plugged my headphones into the headphone output on the Envy 23 I use at work, the music would still play through speakers, annoying my co-workers. I still wanted to be able to listen through headphones, so I plugged the headphones into the speaker output on the back of the computer. Now the music only plays through the headphones. When the compter is viewed from behind, the output is probably near the lower-right corner. It looks just like your headphone output, but has a little icon that looks a little bit like this:(((.))) To listen to your headphones without the speakers playing, plug your headphones into that speaker output on the back of the computer. If, on the other hand, you want to completely shut your speakers down, try this (be warned: this will shut your headphones down as well): Press the Windows + W keys, and type Sound into the search field.Select Sound from the search results. On the Playback tab of the Sound window, double-click Speakers / Headphones. On the General tab of Speakers / Headphones Properties, select Don't use this device (disable) from the Device usage drop-down near the bottom of the window.Click OK

So the power button on my HP detached from the laptop. Long story short, I was boarding back home and hit a rock and fell forward therefore breaking the corner of the power button and shatter the touchscreen. I was still workin fine, except the fact that the screen was shattered and the power chip was dangling out of the laptop. It survived a few weeks before the power chip fell out. I couldnt find the time to go to a store to see what they could do. the only thing keeping it alive was the charging power but I fell asleep with the laptop on. Lucky me. The laptop was working perfectly. I've had it for some time right now. I have ALOT of important files and documents. I was wondering if there was a short-cut or a way I can get my Laptop on without using the power button. I just want to back-up everything i have in the laptop and make a desicion of getting a new one or fixing this one.

Hello,  This is my first time on this site and I have been having some trouble with my computer.FIrst of all, my computer is the HP Envy 23 Touchsmart PC and its roughly around 3-4 years old. For all this time, it has been working fine without any problems, but one day I was playing a game on my computer and it randomly shut down. At first, I thought I accidentally kicked a cord, so I made sure every cord was in their sockets tightly. Thinking it was a loose cord that caused it to shut down, I tried to turn it on again. Unfortunately, there was no luck.   In furthur investigation on my computer, I noticed my power cord was making a small beeping/chirping noise every 2-3 seconds with its green light flashing on and off in sync with the green light. What I found interesting was when I unplugged the power cord from the computer, the green light would actually stay solid without it blinking or making any noise. When i replug it back in, it continues to blink and make the small beeping noise again. As a computer amateur, I am afraid to open my computer up and try to fix the problem myself. And I was also hoping for some solutions here on this site before bringing it into a store to get it fixed.  I also updated my computer to Windows 10 if any of that matters. Thank you for your time!

I have an HP Envy 15T and my right hinge just broke AGAIN.   I had it fixed by HP in March, 2015, and now about a year and a half later, the right hinge is broken again. As other people state, I am very careful with my computer.  Most of the time I leave it sitting on the desk, open, and don't move it much, but sometimes I have to close the display lid and put it in the case to go with me, and today I heard the plastic break inside, the screw is gone, and when slowly closing the display the case pops open at the hinge.  A piece of black plastic came out when I turned the laptop sideways.  Obviously a design flaw, the weight of the screen and hinges being held together by a tiny plaster piece. I wish HP would let me upgrade to another type of computer as this one is obviously going to continue breaking even with my careful use of the laptop. Looking for any and all assistance. Thank you, Mark

Hello!  I went to put my desktop into sleep mode before bed last night and noticed it had turned off.   No idea why.  I go to turn it on and NOTHING.  No lights, no sounds, no fans, nothing.  The power signal light on the back is flashing green.  I followed some steps from this page http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/bph06788#AbT4 Unplugging everything from the back and holding  the power button for 10 seconds didnt do anything.  Pushing for 1 second and waiting 10 seconds didn`t do anything.  I took off my side panel for the next steps, but didn`t want to touch anything as I don`t want to harm anything.  I`ve tried another outlet and the light keeps blinking green.  I haven`t had this computer for too long, maybe a couple years or less.  I take good care of it with good antiviruses and making sure to put it to sleep mode everynight, and keep it updated etc.  Looks like the power to the machine is okay since the light is flashing....  is it something internal? Wondering if anyone could help?   Feeling anxious.  Please and thank you!

I understand that you started through the troubleshooting guide for power supplies.  The step about disconnecting internal components is essential to continue the troubleshooting, however.  If you are not comfortable with that, maybe get a more knowledgeable friend to help.  Otherwise it is off to the repair shop.

My Laptop was working fine. It was plugged in as to charge the battery. I went to bed, got up the next day to use my laptop. I pushed the power button and nothing happens. I made sure the battery was seated correctly and also the plug into the laptop and wall. I also tryed diffrent outlets in my home and nothing.

The only thing I ca tell you is that when I press the power button the light next to the power input blinks (3) times and then stops. Nothing more happens. That is all the information I can provide.

So can you please help me find a solution? My warranty has since expired.

Visruth,       I went and looked in the end of the power connector where it connects into the computer, and found the center pin on the power adapter was bent to oneside and this prevented it from seating correctly within the laptop.     I used a flat screw driver from an Eye Glass repair kit and bent it back to the middle.   Vala!     Everything is working fine, computer turned on and battery is charging.     I want to thank you for research and suggestions into my search for answers.    V/R    Scott

Before bios and OS upgrades the laptop would auto disable the main keyboard when rotated 360 deg for flat touch mode. It will no longer do this creating a problem when in touchpad mode. No settings seem to change this.

The other day I decided to turn my envy off for the first time in roughly a week. I usually just leave it on, plugged into the charger, putting it into sleep mode when im not using it. For some reason, ever since then I have not been able to turn it back on. Whenever I press the power button, The power light blinks. The pattern is a single short blink every 3-5 seconds. This continues until I take the battery out. Sometimes, if I leave it be for a day or so, I am able to get the computer to turn on, but It will not boot. I can hear the fan going, see the lights turn on as they are supposed to, however the screen remains black. I am under the impression that this either a hardware issue, or the CPU is just toast. either of which would suck. Normally I would take to a computer shop and have them look at it, but right now I'm serving in Iraq, so im SOL. And yes, I have tried everything under the sun to get it running. I have taken the battery out and left it out for an extended period, tried turning it on with and without the ac adapter plugged in, tried to perform a hard reset, and a combination of all of them.

Hi there, I am new to the Forum. I hope you can help me.The original Windows was 8 upgraded to 10.I replaced the bottom cover. The Notebook was working fine before. In the proses I disconnected the CMOSS battery, HD, DVD, WiFi adapter, etc. I have done this before many times. Before assembling all back, as I usually do, I performed a quick test. I connected the LCD, memory, CMOSS battery, on/off button board, keyboard and DC charger. When I pressed the on/off button the led on the on/off board turned on, the CPU fan turned on, the HP logo on the back of the LCD turned on, the LCD screen stays black and the caps lock led start blinking once every 2 or 3 seconds.Because this Notebook was Windows 8 and use UEFI I decided to finish the assembling and try again. It responded the same as before.I can?t believe that the MB is bad; it was OK before replacing the bottom cover. Probably something to do with the UEFI/Windows 10 combination??????What I have tried?1-Hard Reset: no battery, no DC charger and pressing on/off button for 15 seconds.2-Disconected the CMOSS battery for several hours.3-Turning on and hitting the Esc, F12,F11,F10? button many times (all the F buttons).

I followed the instructions listed on this page for "performing a Hard Reset or Forced Reset". In particular I followed the "Reset a notebook with a sealed or non-removable battery" section as my laptop has a non-removable battery. However, I did all this to no avail. When I release the power button it produces a brief white light and the F12 button with a "wireless" icon (see attached image below) produces an equally brief orange light simultaneously. I don't know what's going on From what I can gather from this thread, it has to do with the motherboard. After upgraded to WIn 10, i think my ADM 7700M driver isn't working anymore as i tried a benchmark and the result on GPU was so low. It turned out that my AMD didn't jump up to the test, the Intel HD was taken care of that instead. Thus i tried to open the catalys and reconfigre again. NOW that i found out there was no more catalys on the control panel, and the two options of Graphic Properties and Configure Switchable Graphic, which i can normally access from the homescreen are longer in use. This said when i click on either of them, there are icon show that the system is processing but after a while it disappears and nothing happen.I tried to reinstall the driver by go directly to AMD homepage and downloaded all the tools, which after a while said that i am all up-to-date but the problems are still unfixed.

No LED's light up (even the one on the power button or the white/orange one next to the power input). I measured power brick's output and it is still putting out power. Even i did hard reset as i read instraction on hp support. But no result. Is there something inside the laptop that I can try to replace, or will I probably have to replace the entire montherboard?

I have a newly purchased HP ENVY Phoenix 800-445qe which includes what's supposed to be a 16gb ssd cache.  Running WIndows 7 Pro 64.   The ssd drive was factory installed so it shows in Windows as with the name DATADRIVE1 (doesn't sound like it was intended as a cache, does it?) and it shows as drive E:. My understanding is that if it were really installed as a cache, it wouldn't be showing as a drive in Windows Explorer. The HDD was set as ACHI in BIOS, not RAID.  The Intel RST screen in firmware (accessable through Ctrl-I) shows both drives as non-RAID Disks.  The HP support assistant shows the Intel RST x 64 driver v 13.2.0.1016 installed.  Elsewhere on the HP site is a support article with the title: A Seondary 16 GB Drive Shows up in Windows 8 File Explorer, which is the problem I'm having except, I have Win 7, not 8; it says to download a softpaq with release notes that say it only applies to HP ENVY HP-8 systems and requires Win 8; it's fix is to install Condusiv ExpressCache, which I'm under the impression is an alternative to Intel's RST, not something that works with it.  So that doesn't seem to be the fix I'm looking for.  HP Tech Support's helpful suggestion was to find a local computer dealer an pay them to fix it. (Yeah, right.) Does anybody here know how to get this thing working?

Hi, Your PC should be using the Condusiv ExpressCache service.  It either works or it doesn't.  If you believe that it's not working then you need to contact HP Support (instructions from an internal HP employee). HP's support number is 800-474-6836 or 800-HPINVENT or online here.

I also have an HP Envy, differnt model, and I have a dedicated keyboard backlight button, also known as 'f5'. The button just stopped working. I do have light on the power button when the power is on, and the f12(wifi) and caps lock lights go on, but only the dot in the upper righthand corner as is appropriate. Other than that, total darkness. I think the lights are burned out. Before, I could turn the backlights on and off at will, regardless of the ambient lighting. I have tried the available links for 'repair', but to no avail. I would really like to know what the problem is, and what can be done to return the f5 button to its former glory...if that's even possible.  Thanks.

I inherited a non-working notebook from my now deceased business partner.  I don't know much about the notebook other than it didn't have any HDDs. It's a HP Envy 17t-3000 with an i7-2860QM CPU and is running BIOS version F.06.  I'm guessing it's a pretty nice laptop when it works.  I'm assuming it's out of warranty as the warranty start date is 1/29/12.  Other potentially relevant data is:  System Board ID = 1689, 8GB RAM, ??? When I inserted a formatted SSD into the drive cradle and plugged the drive cable into the onboard drive controller, the BIOS doesn't see the HDD.  I'm guessing the drive controlllers on the motherboard have failed.  I do, however, see that the SSD get's power since the LED on the SSD lights up. Any help you may provide in how to proceed would be appreciated. David

I purchased this computer 3 months ago and just got it up and running. I put a DVD into the drive and nothing happened. It is not recognized under file explorer. I can hear it spinning and "trying to work". I popped out the disk and tried another disk and sometimes, after several minutes, it will see the disk and will be noted in file explorer. Most of the time it doesn't recognize the DVD. I called HP and I am out of warranty and they want to charge me $100 to fix the problem. I explained I just was able to set up this new computer 3 days ago. So they sent me directions to do it myself. I successfully followed the directions and it still doesn't work. Why isn't it recognizing the drive in explorer and why is it only very intermittently working? Thank you very very much for any help.

I just got a new Envy 15t laptop with Windows 7 Pro and have been trying to install the driver for my wireless HP Photosmart D110a. When use the HP tool to search for my products, the laptop finds the printer, which I select and go through the process of downloading the driver. During the "Checking System" step, I get a message in a pop-up window called  "System Requirements Results" that says: "This computer does not have the necessary USB Software Support to allow completion of a USB Installation. My HP Envy 15t-k000 works fine, but is slow. I thought it was my internet until I did a troubleshooting and discovered that the reason I am not getting the superfast speeds I am supposed to be getting is because my computer doesn't have a fast enough network adaptor. Currently it has the Qualcomm Atheros AR9485 it came with. I looked at the service manual and couldn't find an upgrade in it. Is there a module I can replace it with that will allow for the 1G speeds? The part number for the laptop is G0T55AV. Thanks!

A:My HP Envy network adapter doesn't support gigabit speeds. I...

Hi: The adapter you mentioned...Qualcomm Atheros AR9485 is the wireless network adapter, and I do not believe that card will connect any faster than 72 MBPS. Your notebook comes with the Realtek 10/100 ethernet (wired) adapter and it cannot be upgraded because the ethernet chip is part of the motheboard. If you want a gigabit ethernet connection, then I recommend you purchase an external USB to RJ-45 gigabit ethernet adapter. You won't find any wireless card that will go beyond the AC rate of 867 MBPS and you would need an ac router to achieve those speeds. You would also have to take the entire notebook apart to replace the wireless card and if your notebook only has one antenna attached to the atheros wlan card, you won't be able to upgrade to a faster wireless card. A suitable AC card would be the Intel 7260 wireless card if your notebook has two antennas attached to the atheros card. http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/wireless-products/dual-band-wireless-ac-7260-bluetooth.html

This is my problem: I have the power saving settings set to turn off my monitor after 20 min. It does briefly turn off, only to turn on again 1 sec. later, displaying a faint very dark blue screen... It used turn off fine, but after upgrading from Windows 98SE to XP Pro I got this problem. Is this the OS or my video card?

Any clues?

Thanks all

A:"Turn monitor off" setting doesn't really turn off

Did you upgrade to XP right over the top of 98 or was it a clean install? If you did an upgrade over the top of 98 (and I know you don't want to hear this lol) then you should format and do a clean install. Upgrades rarely leave you with a stable system.

Things to try before you do that though:

1) Make sure your video card drivers are up to date.

2) Make sure Windows is updated - go to windowsupdate

3) try the system file checker (Start, Run, "sfc /scannow" [without the quotes]) to make sure your system files are intact.

Other than that I would say just do a format and install XP from scratch (to be honest, you should do this anyway if you haven't already, you'll get much better stability and performance).

(btw not one LED switches nor flashes on the keyboard!)- hard reset (15 seconds power button while having disconnected everything).- switching it on with Windows button+B pushed down, in order to restore a previous BIOS, in case it's corrupted. Everything has failed. Can I mention that Windows 10 was recently installed (upgrade) on this machine, and I was merely doing a restart, aiming at reinstalling Windows 7 on it from scratch.  Please Help!Appreciate all the input. Many Thanks!

A:PC doesn't turn on

Are you sure the wall outlet still has power? Did you try to plug a lamp into the outlet to check for power? If your PSU isn't plugged directly into a wall outlet then please make that happens.

Often a computer can break and still remain functional until power is removed. Once the power is gone the broken circuit can/will no longer function. The power button on your computer case could be broken or simply have a lose wire. All the power button does is briefly short the connection. When you push the power button the motherboard will sense the short and turn on. You can check the power button's connection by briefly shorting the two wires that connect the power button to the motherboard at the header.

Hi there!
I have had my rig for about 1 1/2 years now, and I have upgraded the graphics card and power supply about half a year ago. But for the past few days I've encountered a problem that the pc doesn't turn on with the first try.

My pc case has a blue light for indicating power supply, and a red one for HDD activity. When I press the power up button, sometimes the red light doesn't turn on and only the fans spin. Also the startup screen doesn't appear. I've had a faulty power supply before and it had similar symptoms, but this time I assume it most certainly is not the power supply to blame, because whenever the computer does start, it works flawlessly, and doesn't shut down or stutter during gaming on 3d rendering.

What could cause this problem? Could it be the power button itself? I guess I will open up the computer over the weekend and try to look for a loose wire or smth, but maybe someone has encountered a similar problem and knows where to start?

A:PC sometimes doesn't turn on

Firstly we have no idea what the specs are of the system in question, so can be difficult to make any informed response. Please post some detailed system specs including make and model of the motherboard, CPU, RAM, graphics card, power supply etc. The more info the better.

Based on the symptoms I certainly wouldn't rule out a faulty PSU.

It wouldn't hurt to double check all cables and connectors inside the machine.

Okay so by default, the HDD turns off after 20 min of inactivity. It's too short and gets annoying having to wait for the HDD to spin up every time I want to search the drive for something.

So I set it to 60 min. But it doesn't turn off after 60 min. I go to sleep and when I wake up and use the HDD, there's no spin up cause it's continuously spinning.

The power option works for 20 min but not for 60 min it seems. Anyone know how to get the power saving option to work?

A:HDD doesn't turn off

Hello Cyborg,

You may have something (ex: program or Windows 7) that is accessing the HDD for something within that 60 mins that causes the timer to reset. You might see if decreasing the turn off time by 5 minutes at a time and testing inbetween to see which time it works at.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Maybe you could try plugging it in a different part of your house preferably in a socket that you know works maybe a socket where your TV is plugged in or a Lamp. The socket you are using maybe damaged in some way.

Recently, I have been having trouble turning on my computer. It used to be that, I'd turn it on, then the fans would go up to full speed (all of them), followed by 1 long been, and 2/3 short beeps.

Now, my PC won't even turn on at all. Would the problem be the motherboard? Should I reset the CMOS? How do I do that?

sometimes when a pc wont turn on it could be that you have added or changed some hardware which isnt fully compatible and has trouble with starting up. i had a similar problem with my monitor.

Here's a riddle for you.
My keyboard has come up with a strange disease. It won't create a capital "L" or "E" unless I do a weird trick - which I'll get to. No other letter has this problem. And it creates a lower case "l" or "e" no problem.
The only way I can make an upper case L or E is to press shift, the letter, and release the shift key BEFORE I release the letter key.

Any idea what is going on

I haven't used WP in quite awhile but it sound like something to do with Autocorrect.

There is probably an option in the Tools/Preferences or Tools/Options menu that sets up how AutoCorrect operates. You can modify it to not autocapitalize.

Alternatively, you could use the Help menu to search for 'autocorrect' and it would probably turn up something!

Well, we bought out TV about 6 years ago, and just all of a sudden last night, we were watching it, went outside, and came back in, and it was off. We tried to turn it back on, and it clicked like it was going to turn on, but it clicked off right afterword.

Today, we took the back off, looking for a problem, we cleaned all the dust out, looked for a broken fuse, but everything seemed fine.

Can any one help me find out whats wrong? We can't afford a new tv right now.

A:My tv clicks, but doesn't turn on?

In reality the "click" could indicate any of a thousand component failures.

It is most likely the power supply section shutting down due to overload or as a result of a component failure.

The failure could be in the audio, video, EHT, or any other of the sections, the effect is all that is seen, not the cause. Usually nothing is visible to the eye in the way of the failed component. When they are, the problem usual involves other components as well, unseen.

If it had been a fuse blown, it would have had a 99% chance of being a component failure that caused it as well, they seldom blow without a reason. Replacing the fuse and trying again often just drives the fault deeper taking out even more components.

Sad to say it's either a repair or a replace. There is no way to diagnose the problem remotely. And to remove any concerns as to the advice, I am a qualified TV engineer, though not working in that field.

You may have to pull out the CMOS battery on the motherboard if it is user replaceable. Try and hold down the power button for 30 seconds with the AC adapter and battery removed... connect the AC adapter and try to power up the laptop

Hello,
The last couple of days (this began on Mon.) when I have tried to turn on my computer, 2 things happen simultaneously: 1. my pc doesn't turn on, and 2. my modem's Ethernet light goes off. The first time this happened I called up Qwest, and a representative had me try to reboot my modem, where happily, my pc turned on. But on Tues. evening the same problem happened again, so I tried to reboot my modem twice - w/ no luck w/ my pc. I called up Qwest support, explained my problem, and was told this is not a modem issue (my modem is from Qwest), but my pc. Luckily, when talking to Qwest support, I was able to turn on my pc...and when I finally got in touch w/ someone at eMachines (maker of my pc), I was told that it sounded like a software problem. In any case, when it happened again today, I tried everything – but after rebooting my modem (twice) my computer turned on. Please help, I have no idea what’s going on.
I have Windows XP (updated version) my browser is google chrome - if you need any other info, plz let me know.

Ok here is the problem we been having. It seems that we have problems with our breakers going on and off constanlty but this time it really affected our pc. Our stupid landlord didn't pay the electric bill so our power was shut off durring the night. once it was back on we tried starting our computer back on an guess what nothing happened.

So i checked things out. first i checked the reset switch and we bought a new one of those, new power cord for the power supply, nope that wasn't it.

There are two color light bulbs by the reset switch the green one comes on when the computer is working. its not turning on and the yellow remains on tho so i figured its still getting power but maybe not from the power supply but from the battery since its a pretty big battery. But the fan isn't running, neither are the drives and other things so i think it is in the power supply. Do you think it might be the mobo tho? This computer is only two years old and it has a celleron proccessor and so i was also wondering could it be the processor too?

So here is the questions, what do i replace first? The power supply , proccessor, ram, mobo or just buy a new comp?

Just to let you know yes its plugged in and its turned on and the monitor is turned on also.

A:Computer doesn't turn on

First thing you should buy is a battery backup. Computers are very senstive to electrical problems, using a battery backup and a good quality powersupply will save you possibly thousands of dollars.

Most of these issues I've run into have a sort of chain reaction effect on the destruction of the PC. In all likelyhood, your powersupply is fried. If it was a good quality powersupply then that should be the extent of the damage, however if it didn't fail correctly then your motherboard could also be damaged. Depending on the quality of your motherboard, any various components of you PC could also then be damaged.

So giving that I understand your situation correctly, I'd first buy a battery backup (I prefer APC but Belkins are decent), then I'd buy a Powersupply (not a cheapo 350w Powmax, look for a good name like Enermax, Antec, Fortron, OCZ, or Seasonic) then see if your PC will start up. If its a no go then you need to replace the motherboard (at which point a system upgrade becomes an entertaining idea).

If at all possible try testing the components of your PC in another working computer so that you can devise what's good and what isn't.

But regardless, get a Battery backup.

I need serious help. I got to school online and am in a really hard class. Now, my computer is flaking out on me. I like to turn my computer off when I am not using it because periodically the computer sounds loud like I am doing twenty things at once when I am not even using it. Then my computer gets quiet again. I have XP Home Edition and it doesn't turn all the way on sometimes. In these instances, all the lights that are supposed to be lit on the tower are, but the monitor doesn't turn on. I have to hold the power button in until the tower turns off, I wait about thirty seconds then turn on the power again. It is like Russian Roulette, sometimes it works, sometimes I have to do this again. It has gotten slower too, my computer is so freakin slow, and it just froze on me for a moment. I am not sure this next piece of information will have anything to do with this but last week I had ran and downloaded the MS Essentials program for viruses and spywares. It said I had Win32/Induc.A, and it said it was a virus. All the files listed below it I deleted even from recycle bin so I thought it was gone. I looked up information about the Induc.A and it said it attaches to Delphi files if you have them and copy files and rename them as well, which I did a search and found no delphi files. Then the MS Support Page said that if none, it will just bounce around your system in a richochet style.I will check in later, to see if I been hooked. Thank you.

hi all,

i hope you guys can help. i would really appreciate all ideas. lately my hp laptop used to overheat and shut down instantly. i had to wait roughly 5-10 minutes in order to turn it on again. however after that, the screen used to freeze and the graphics started to look wrong with colourful strips at the start up or after on the desktop.

now wen i press the on button, the lights do come up on the keyboard area, but the screen starts of black then the contrasts increases and gradually having a colourful screen but no signs of anything else. its like the colourful signal screen we get on tv channels!!

i had thoought it could be the battery because it never lasted long and it had to be plugged in all the time. but i guess its more than that. i have taken it to pc world but costing £330 to fix :S i just want to know the problem and whether its as big as it looks.

many thanks, and look forward to responses

A:HP laptop doesn't turn on

This could be a few things:

When you say your laptop used to overheat and shut down, was it sat on a table or was it such that the ventilation could have been blocked (by a duvet or blanket on a bed)?

If the fan has stopped, that will cause immediate shut down as the CPU gets to it's max temperature. In turn, this could affect other areas of the motherboard such as graphics (you did not say whether you had onboard graphics card) and it certainly looks like graphics have been affected.

Are you able to check inside (are you confident to open up your laptop)? If so you will be able to see if the fan is working or not, otherwise you will have to listen to see if the fan appears to be working.

In the end, laptops do not like heat which is why it is essential to maintain the ventilation at all times.

PC world and Tech Guys charge the earth for basic laptop or PC repairs and so if you can find a colleague or friend to have a look just to diagnose the fault that will save you some pennies even if you are forced to take it in for repair. Good luck!

I'm not sure what the problem is but a relative asked if I could do anything about their laptop not booting up. It's an emachines E625. They don't have any additional info to tell me. I would've thought it was the charger but the light on it shows that it is on. The charging light on the laptop doesn't come on however. I would guess that it might be some kind of short in the cord that goes to the laptop but the cord has been used with an identical laptop. Not sure what I should do...

A:Laptop doesn't turn on

I have had 2 Dell laptops do this last year. Turned out to be the jack on the back of the laptop.
If they have another laptop they might try switching the batteries to see if the laptop in question will boot from the battery. If it still will not work, then there js a problem with the machine.

Hello everyone!! (I think I'm the only one here though on a Saturday night )

Anyway, I've been reading through the forum to see if I could find some answers to my problem with my HP and the closest one is "Old School" dated September 1, 2006. So, I've noted some of the answers and I'm going to try some things (that apply) tonight with my computer.

However, the initial problem started when I began to notice my computer slowing down, so I decided to remove some programs, files that I no longer needed. Afterwards, it didn't seem like it help any at all. A few days after that I began to get errors saying the memory was low and so I decided to completely start all over, going back to when I bought the computer new. However, when I attempted to do this it wouldn't let me saying the memory was low or not enough memory. Next thing I knew my computer completely crashed and I haven't been able to get it back on. Here are some of the things that are coming up when I try to start it.
