A: How to switch from Windows 10 desktop apps to older version ...

I am not certain what exactly you are asking. If you are asking if you can use apps from another OS, Win 7 for instance, with Win 10, I believe you would have to use Compatibility Mode for them to work properly in many instances. Please click the Thumbs up + button if I have helped you and click Accept as Solution if your problem is solved.

Ok I've been running around here trying to make this work and haven't figured out how yet.

Have an old PC running XP. Want to get rid of it but I want to wipe it off completely first. Don't have XP disk, but have Win2k disk. It says I can't install older version of windows. Tried reading about how to format completely and then do a fresh install but it seems I need to make a boot cd or something? I don't have a cd burner on this old computer... drive got mechanically busted so I just bought a cheapo USB cd drive for it and I don't plan to spend another penny on this old thing!

Anyway, the end goal is to get rid of this computer. I won't let it out of my possession unless it is wiped clean. I have a broke friend who could use a computer and if possible I'd like to have an OS on there so she can use it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey all, firstly a big thanks to this forum for all it's superb tutorials for making Windows 8 usable again

My question is how can I prevent Windows 8 from applying what looks like the Windows Vista 'Basic' theme to certain apps, namely Adobe CS2 which I've just re-installed since building my new system. The regular Windows 8 theme is applied at launch but as soon as the menu is clicked it reverts to the basic theme.

Screenshot of the theme at launch:

And after the menu has been clicked:

Is this basic theme located somewhere that I could replace with the standard Windows 8 theme, or some other solution?

A:How to disable Windows 8 basic theme for older apps?

Recommend CS6 and to uninstall CS2, for Windows 8.

Hi. If I uninstall windows live essentials 2011 and install windows live essentials 2009, will the 2009 windows live mail automatically have all my emails in place without having to import them from my backup? My .eml files are in C:\Users\Me\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail, so I assume any version of live mail will associate itself with that automatically and the emails will show up? The only reason I'm doing this is because I hate the new live messenger, (which I uninstalled) and tried to install the 2009 version. But it won't let me install older versions until I uninstall live essentials 2011. And that means all other live apps get uninstalled, including email of course.

Unless, (and I know this is the browsers and mail forum), anyone knows a workaround to installing 2009 messenger while keeping live essentials 2011 installed?

A:Installing older version of Windows Live Mail

Thanks guys. I haven't tried your method yet Roderunner but I wanted to test what would happen, so I installed email to my lesser used laptop last night as it hadn't been installed yet. I transferred my live mail folder from C:\Users\Me\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail to laptop, then put it in the same AppData location. Then I installed windows live essentials 2009 and live mail, and all my emails showed up. Two things that didn't show though.

1. My imported folder in the storage folder (with my archived 1999 - 2009 eml files) didn't show so I imported them, wasn't a problem.

2. My email contacts aren't showing. Where are they located? These aren't windows live contacts as such, these are just where I've had email correspondence with people and their addresses seem to get automatically saved so that when I compose a new mail, I can click 'To...' and see those addresses. As in my screenshot from my desktop contacts:

I have tried to repair/reinstall/install my Windows XP system with no luck. I asked for help in an earlier thread, and got some helpful advice, but now I have a new problem. (I'm not sure I should be starting a new thread on this; but it does seem like a separate issue to me.)

About two years ago I had the Geek Squad in to rid my computer of a deeply embedded virus. The techie said something to the effect that he was going to load a newer version of XP, which I welcomed, and thought no more about it. Now, in trying to reinstall or install or whatever it is that I'm going to do, the XP disk comes up with an error message saying that I cannot install an earlier version of XP. I don't have a copy of the newer version the techie installed. My question is: is there a way to override the can't-install-older-version block and reinstall the original XP version I have on a legally-owned disk?

Thank you for whatever advice you can give me.

I can get a fairly decent price on A site for an older version of Windows 7 Ultimate so is the smarter choice to purchase the newer though more costly versions, or the older versions at the cheaper price. Hello, everyone.

I've been trying to dual-boot (Sorry most of my questions are on dual-booting) Windows 7 with Windows NT 4.0. My one problem is that while it's starting, it says
STOP: (forgot error code...) INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE

Is there anything I did (or am doing) wrong?

I use the classic desktop in Win 8.1, but occasionally find myself in the tiled screen or Settings. When doing that during the last several days, I'm getting a "Switch between apps" box pop up on the edge of the desktop and can't get rid of it short of a reboot. Clicking on the arrow causes it to go back to the left and return to the original place. I posted on the MS Answers forum, but the "support engineer" said it's part of Win 8.1, there to be helpful and the arrow goes away when clicked on; i.e., she blew me off (that sort of help is all too common on MS Answers). Is there a way to get rid of it? Thanks,

A:Is it possible to switch to Windows 8.1 32 bit into 8.1 64 bit by deactivating the 32 bit version?

Notwithstanding the licensing, you can't "switch" from 32 to 64bit (or vice versa) - it needs a clean install to do that.
The licensing question is a little confusing and depends on what kind of licence you had on the old machine and what kind is on the new one (if any). If I understand your question correctly, then probably "yes". Check the documentation/media that came with the licence you want to install.

Dear Support,

I have an in-house web application that accesses Windows network locations, using something like this:

<a href: file://<file-location>>Click here</a>

The internal website is added to Trusted Sites, with security settings to allow the application to open folders/files within our network.

In Internet Explorer, on Windows 7, this works fine.
On Windows 10, although this still works fine in Internet Explorer (without any messages), Edge prompts the user to confirm the irritating Did you mean to switch apps? message.
Can this be removed/overwritten/anything?!

Thanks in advance

Hi all,
Trying to help my dad fix his computer. First want to say thank you for volunteering and offering a website that allows people like myself solve a problem. I know a little about computers, but not too too much.
Anyway, my dad has a Dell with Intel Celeron 2.66 GHZ, 512 MB RAM computer, Windows XP operating system. Lately, it has been taking FORVER for it to load up. I know it is an older model Dell, but I know it used to startup a lot faster than it does currently.
I have ran AVG antivirus and Spybot and found no traces of viruses or malware on the computer. I have also gone through and turned off automatic windows updates and virus scanning so I know that is not the issue.
Some questions:
1) Any suggestions?
2) I don't want to fry the motherboard...can this computer handle additional RAM? If so, can anyone recommend a max amount to place in the machine?

My best friend has an older Dell Inspiron 530 desktop system, approximately 5-6 years old and maybe even a little older. He's come to me and asked if I can help him upgrade his 530 to Win 7 Home Premium 32-bit from the XP Pro Svce Pack 3 O/S currently running it. Depending on with whom I speak at Dell support, one moment the answer's yes; another moment, no; and yet another moment, maybe, but there might be problems! When I asked for further elaboration re "problems," I was told with the drivers on an older XP machine. I had envisioned backing up his current data to an external HD, then installing Win 7, followed by restoring his backed up data.

I'm not here to bash Dell in any way, but I still don't know if I can or should do what my friend prefers, and that's to move away from the XP Pro sp3 O/S no long supported and get more current with Win 7 installed on his 530...he really wants to keep his 530.

I'd really appreciate some help here.

Thank you!

A:Windows 7 installation on an older desktop with xp pro s/p 3

Buy a 6 Gbps sata drive, hook it up and install W7 on that, completely un hook his XP drive. If the machine was ever sold with Vista then those drivers will work with 7. Get the network driver and put it on a flash drive using the XP install before you start anything, that way you can install it and get online with the W7 install. You will need to get that driver from the Dell website.

It will run 7 no problem, just max out the memory and add a good video card. Later on upgrade the cpu to the fastest it can handle.

I just received a Dell Dimension 2400 desktop for free and figured I can just get it back to nothing on it by formatting it and giving it to a friend. I have a windows XP Home OS install disc that I downloaded not too long ago, I used the very same install OS cd on a dell laptop and windows XP installed perfectly fine, and I went to Dell's website and downloaded all the drivers. Now with this Desktop, I put in the OS install CD, booted to the CD, of course the windows XP install screen came up. I deleted the old partition, created a new one, and began to install windows on it. The computer restarted and went into the installation screen. However, it freezes at 39minutes and then after about 15 min an error screen pops up. I just used the disc recently and can't figure out why it is stopping at that 39min screen?

I can print a check or a series of checks but once I click "OK" I get an error message. Asks me

The checks print fine, they are recorded fine but its annoying that the program simply tosses me out

His "main" machine failed the authenticity check and was flagged as having potential counterfeit software. He has a genuine SP 1 package although it looks like the shop that installed his latest hard drive loaded their XP Pro SP 2 on the machine. Belarc indicated a different SN and keycode then the one from his package. It may have been a friend that assisted him also, and was doing him a favor by not making him get all the online upgrades.

At any rate, can I "reinstall" from his "older", legitimate package without reformatting. I needs to replace the current SN and key with his and would be good if we could leave all of the upgrades intact. Can this be done by selecting "repair" even though it is an older version?

He purchased a multi-install version, or OEM or something... it is supposed to be installable on all of his machines. I'm afraid I'm not familiar with that. How do I determine how many systems it can be installed on..? He already has it on 2 other machines on his network (both of which passed authenticity, WGA and the imbedded WGA test in Windows Defender).
Thanks in advance for your time and attention

Hello,

I have an issue with the detection of my SSD in the Toshiba Satellite L50-A-1EH (PSKK6E).
It only gets detected in the BIOS 1 on 30 times when booting (after which it runs great).
Setting the "SATA Interface setting" to "Battery life" fixes the detection problem, at the cost of a speed reduction of factor 4.5.

Some people who had similar issues, resolved this by flashing an older version of the BIOS.

Currently I have v1.70, which is the latest.

Where can I find older BIOS'es / the BIOS archives?

Regards,
Arthur Borsboom.

Unfortunately on the Toshiba download page you can find latest version only.

I purchased a Dell in 2005 that came loaded with Win XP Home. Currently have SP2 loaded on it. I have an older version XP Pro CD that must predate the preloaded Home, because when I try to use it for various problem repairs, I get the message saying that a newer version of XP has been detected on my PC. There isn't a Home CD available with the Dell, so can't turn to that. How can I get use out of the XP Pro CD? Can I bypass the message or could I just ignore the message? This may have been answered previously, but coldn't get anywhere with the Search function. Thanks.

A:Replace XP Home with older version XP Pro

XP Pro does not Pre-Date XP Home. If you have an XP Pro disc why not just load XP Pro on the computer.

The reason you are probably getting that error is because your computer is on SP2 but SP2 is not integrated on the XP Pro disc. You can slipstream SP2 with AutoStreamer. It works quite well.

i have had great success speeding up my old computer running winxp sp3 with an app called eboostr, and the older version,
eBoostr 3.0.1 build 498 was preferred since it allowed users to use it 4 hours at a time, without having to purchase said product

however, the newer version, eBoostr 4.0 build 554 has only a 2 hour trial period for those not wishing to buy the product, essentially that means shutting down every 2 hours to reset the app's timer

anyways, i was wondering if anyone knew a website where i can download the earlier version of eboostr, as i cant seem to access it from my usual downloads site

So, I have this problem on my laptop: I was using 3.5.0.214 version of Skype and after AVG installed some updates on 5.04.12 it started to cause BSOD every time I tried to open Skype. I'm not 100% positive that AVG causes it, but each time BSOD appeared, it was said there that problem was caused by avgidsdriverx.sys. When I understood why BSOD is happening, I ended up with installing latest Skype version and for now it all works just fine. Also tried to install 3.8.0.188 version before that - got BSOD again. Is there any way for me to return to old version of Skype (new one is okay, but it uses way to much memory comparing to older version)?

I am working on a friend's PC and they tell me that IE 6 crashes frequently. I have observed it crashing on shutdown 100% of the time. They installed IE 7 and found out that it is not compatible with a payroll system that they use so they went back to IE 6. I tried reinstalling IE 6, but get messages saying that the installed version is newer and will not allow me to install. I have tried choosing "Install" from IE.inf to force a complete reinstall, but they don't have their XP Home CD anymore and it wouldn't allow me to use my XP Pro CD for this. I have downloaded IE6setup.exe and used the command line option for downloading the setup files only. I can't use this folder for the IE.inf Install either. Does anyone know how I can force XP to install this older IE 6? I personally prefer firefox and suggested this to them, but the payroll app. that they use is a concern and apparently is not compatible.

Thanks in advance.

A:[SOLVED] Force IE 6 to install even if it's an older version

Sorry to reply to my own message, but I thought of something else. When installing IE.inf it would read from my XP Pro CD up until one file. The filename was IEDW.exe. A Google search shows that is for crash detection. I don't have that on my XP CD or on an XP Home volume lic. CD from my work.

Every time I try to replace a particular file with a newer version Vista swaps it for the previous version, even if the previous version was deleted first.

It is not a system file, it is an Access database.
It is located in a subfolder of Program Files.
The folder was created and is owned by me.
I am an administrator of the local machine.

The original file was placed there using Explorer.
The master version of this file is kept on a server.
Every time I try to copy the latest version of this file into the local folder the operation appears to work.
But when I open the copy I find I?m looking at the previous version.

If I delete the local file it stays deleted.
But as soon as I copy the newer file into the folder, back pops the original!
I?ve tried deleting the local file and copying the newer one to a different local folder.
The file copies fine ? it?s the latest version.
But when I move (not copy) the file into the target folder it reverts to the previous one!

I need to be able to update this file regularly on any Vista machine from each user?s login script.
If Vista wants to keep the file then why doesn?t it restore it if I delete it?

Background: This is a Dell laptop loaded with an OEM installation of Vista Ultimate SP1 and fully patched.

I have received some files created on Microsoft Publisher 2007.
I only have Publisher 2000 so can't open the files
Is there any free utility I can use to open and read them?
Also
Can I then save them as something I will in future be able to open?

A:Opening Publisher file with older version

One can open and edit Office Publisher 2007 files in Microsoft Office Publisher 2003 and Office Publisher 2002, as they share the same file format.
For your current situation, to open and edit Publisher 2007 files in Publisher 2000, have the person you received them from save the files again to the previous version: On the File menu, click Save As. In the Save as type box, choose Publisher 2000 Files.
However, there are some 2007 features that will not supported (or only partly supported).

Hi all.

here are the specs of my machine.

I have windows XP SP2, AMD K7 processor, Nvidia Geforce FX5200 with 128MB ram, 512MB ram with 219.29MB free, 224GB HD, DirectX 9.0c.

One of the games I am trying to run is "Requiem, Avenging angel" from 3DO.

I have played games on PC now for the last 10 years plus. I still have a lot of my older games which I used to run on my old machine running Win 98b with the older DirectX versions. I would like to be able to keep playing them, but games which use DirectX versions older than 7 cannot detect DX 9.

I have heard of some software which tells (lies to) the software that the version is what it wants. If this software exists or if there is any other workaround I would be very interested in any help at all with this issue.

Hi all,

Firefox 3.5 was finally made available today. We have a couple defects that we had to wait for the release version before we could fix. We're going to make a couple changes and test with the final release of Firefox 3.5 to ensure the compatibility issues we discovered were indeed corrected.

There should be another update on this later on today with additional status on Firefox 3.5 compatibility.

I went to help my son design a brochure for school, and found my MS Office Publisher 2000 was gone! I took my computer in December to someone to get rid of a vicious virus that required reformatting my hard disk and reinstalling my Office software. I'm guessing he used some license that he had to reinstall Office 2000 that doesn't match my CDs/product key. I tried using my old CD and product key and the product key recovered using Belarc to no avail.

/forcebios is the key command in DOS! If you have been struggling to restore your BIOS to an earlier version you will immediately realize how important this little command is.
You will need to use it after the .exe, after the c: prompt in DOS to revert to an older BIOS. It will look something like this when you enter it (the 530_1016.exe is the name of the 1.0.16 BIOS I found through Google):
C:\>530_1016.exe/forcebios
And this allows you to return to the older BIOS after you have created a Boot USB, placed the BIOS .exe on the USB, inserted the USB and booted using F12.
I love old Dell desktop PCs! Especially the Vostro 200, but an Inspiron 530 recently gave me a real headache.
The most recent BIOS for the Inspiron 530 (BIOS 1.0.18) has all sorts of bugs.. not least that it will forget BIOS/CMOS settings (giving CMOS checksum error) and will need to have the time and date and boot order reset if someone switches off the mains.
The only fix for me, having renewed the CMOS battery and  wiped the CMOS using the jumper (to no avail) was to restore an earlier BIOS (I chose 1.0.16).
Having created the Boot USB (following links on Google) and having put the old BIOS 1.0.16 on the USB and pressed F12 at startup I ran the old BIOS. But the DOS message I got was:
New bios version is low! ALL files removed!
This meant that I was trying to load an older BIOS and it wasn't going to allow me to do that.
After spending hours scanning the web I found an old, long closed, thread ... Read more

I've just upgraded from Windows xp to 10.
I use an older version of the Quattro Pro spreadsheet (2003) and have columns formatted for dates. In XP, the slash between 2 numbers is interpreted as month and day, but in W10, it treats it as a calculation and the date appears as 30-Dec-99.
Is there a fix for this or am I missing something? I've noticed that Excel recognizes it as a date.

Hi,

As the post title suggests, I am having trouble with the modern apps and connectivity. It feels like half my computer will connect to the internet, and the other half won't. Desktop apps like Chrome, Steam, Outlook, iTunes etc. all connect to the internet fine, but any of the Windows apps like Xbox, Store and (most frustratingly) Settings will not connect.

In my network and sharing centre in the control panel it says 'You are not connected to any networks' - but in the system tray, and in the settings app it shows me as connected to my home wi-fi. I am on a desktop, and using a USB wireless adapter. I don't think the adapter is the problem as I have tried it on another desktop in our house on Windows 10 and it worked fine. Curiously also, when I click 'Adapter settings' in the control panel, it shows the wifi connection.

I've tried updating the drivers for the wireless adapter, both through the Windows update and adapter website but to no avail (and as I mentioned, it seems the adapter works fine elsewhere). I've updated manually to the latest Windows 10 Pro build, i've done a DNS flush, I've tried disabling firewalls and anti-virus, I've tried disabling startup apps, I've done a clean install of Windows 10 and still am unable to fix the issue.

If anyone has any ideas that might help that would be great. I'm happy to provide any more information if people need it.

Thanks very much.

A:Modern apps not connecting to internet, desktop apps work fine.

Is your DNS client service running on your system .

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:
Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.In the list of services, click DNS Client.Make sure that the Status column displays Started and that the Startup Type column displays Automatic. If the service is not set to Started or if the startup type for the DNS Client service is not set to Automatic, follow these steps:
Right-click DNS Client, and then click Properties. In the DNS Client Properties dialog box, click the General tab, and then click Automatic in the Startup type list.Click Start, click Apply, and then click OK.

Hi all

I recently rebuilt my Windows 7 64bit laptop, but before doing so I created a system image on an external drive, so if I encountered any problems I could restore it to it's previous state.

The rebuild went fine but after a week or so I realised that I had not copied some of my photos I wanted to transfer.

I thought if I created another system image I could restore to the older version, grab the photos, then restore back using the most current image and all would be well.

I began creating the new system image and was warned that it 'may' overwrite older versions if there was insufficient space on the drive. Well as there would have been about 300gb free even after adding this system image I didn't think it would be a problem. I imagine you can guess what happens next.....it's overwritten my original system image.

So what I am desperate to now know is.....is there any way to recover the original system image from the drive?

Thanks in advance.

Barry

A:System Image has overwritten older version, any way to restore?

Hello Barry and welcome to Seven Forums. My usual disclaimer: I'm not an expert in anything.

I believe that once a system image is overwritten you can't recover the original data. Microsoft says that once a system image is made, "...you can't choose individual items to restore, and all of your current programs, system settings, and files are replaced with the contents of the system image."

What is a system image?

I believe that trying to recover the old system image would be trying to selectively pick and choose individual items. I could be wrong on this and if so others will probably jump in to correct me.

Could you still use this new system image as your "master"? It should be called WindowsImageBackup on the external hard drive. You could rename it to something like WIBMaster011612 so it won't get overwritten again. The next time you create a new system image it will then be called WindowsImageBackup and your external drive will show two files ... WIBMaster and WindowsImageBackup. If you ever need to restore to the "Master" just name it back to WindowsImageBackup and select it from your choices.

I have tried deleting the files and folders associated with iTunes and Quicktime, but when I try to re-install iTunes the same message pops up and when I say cancel it tells me that I have not fully removed the previous version of iTunes and need to contact my support team. As if I have my own personal support team?! This is driving me insane and I have no idea what to do here.

Please help!

Hi

I have a huge problem, hope someone can help!

I recently had my computer fried by various power failures. I have the hard drive which seems to be working fine. I have installed it in another computer as a slave. I now want to import my .pst file, but am getting the following error that says my file :

"is not compatible with this version of the pernonal folders information service. Contact your administrator."

The problem seems to be that there is an older version of outlook running on the "new" computer than the one that was running on the old one.

New computer Outlook version : 10.0.2616.0
Old computer Outlook version: 11.0.5510

Can anybody help me with this problem???? I do most of my work from email, so this is a HUGE problem for me. I am running Windows XP Pro

Thanks!!
Channy

A:Solved: Importing an outlook .pst file from a newer version to an older

Welcome to the forum.

They switched to another file format when they released Outlook 2003. Try using a blank pst to make the account file and then importing items from your old pst file. To Import data you will go to "File">>"Import and Export" from the menu bar and go through the wizard.

Welcome to Windows 7 Support forums,
How are you opening your word docs?
Are you running Microsoft Word first, then opening your docs from within the program?

This is the current fix from the developer of SmitFraudFix:Bug Title: SmitfraudFix 2.169 Bug remove execution permissions from the %SYSTEM% folder.Information: A bug in the SmitFraudFix program has led to a problem with some people starting their computer. This is caused by a command in SmitFraudFix that removed permissions to the files residing under the C:\Windows\System32 (%System%) folder. Unfortunately, when Windows starts it needs to access these files, and when it is denied access, fails to properly start. This makes it so you can not enter Safe Mode, Command Prompt only mode, or Normal boot up mode. It is important to note that absolutely no data or files have been lost or corrupted due to this bug. It is just an issue of files that are needed to start your system are being denied access to.Current Fix:If your system has been corrupted you can restore NTFS Permissions with this procedure:Install a new Windows version on a different hard drive or different Folder or unplug the existing hard drive and plug it into a computer with a working copy of Windows XP, Vista, 2000, or 2003. If you choose to reinstall Windows into a different folder or hard drive, DO NOT CHOoSE TO REINSTALL IN THE SAME FOLDER. Once you are booted into a working version of Windows (a new install or a different computer) you should follow these steps: Boot up the computer that you will use to access your old files. I bought a pre-built desktop a little over a year ago. It cam with integrated graphics, an ATI Radeon 3000. I installed an HD 6670 shortly after. I now have a two monitor setup. I have my primary monitor hooked up to the 6670 and the secondary to the 3000. After updating CCC to 12.6 from 12.4 the second monitor isn't detected.

I've been going to device manager and uninstalling the 3000 drivers, then restarting, and my secondary monitor is detected, drivers auto install, and both work. Unfortunately when I check CCC it's back to 12.4.

Thanks in advance!

A:Catalyst Control Center keeps reverting back to older version?

You need to get rid of the old ccc registry values, driversweeper does a good job, I use that with ccleaner and it usually fixes those type of issues

I tried to find out if desktop apps(beyond the included ones) would be allowed on Windows RT devices. The response from an MS employee was:

Currently, the most detailed information about Windows RT is still the Building Windows 8 Blog post "Building Windows for the ARM Processor Architecture". Since the Windows RT devices have not been released, we are not prepared to go into details beyond the blogs yet.

The post never directly refers to desktop development, and never states that WinRT apps will be the only way to develop on ARM devices.
Hopefully that means there's a chance that Desktop development will be allowed on Windows RT; otherwise, he could have just said no.

A:Desktop apps on Windows RT devices-maybe

Hello Phailyoor,

Yeah, while the Windows RT does have the desktop, you cannot install desktop software on it. Only Metro apps can be installed by users.

I've made significant progress to get Windows 8 usable on a PC.

Three of my favourites are

Classic Shell &
Oblytile at [APP] OblyTile - Tile Creator for all programs. - xda-developers - Allows you to customise tiles!!!
Creation of a shutdown shortcut & tile

There is one major thing outstanding for me. I want to start an Windows 8 App from the desktop.
I've figured out that they are stored in c:\ProgramFiles\WindowsApps but a normal shortcut does not seem to work. It states "This application can only be run in the context of an application container"

I can run them from the Classic Shell menu but I am a loss as to how to create a shortcut to run them. I don't mind if the shortcut is to a "launching application", etc. Utopia would be to run them in a window but quite happy to accept them starting full screen in "metro" mode. Any help or guidance would be really appreciated.

That paid app called RetroUI Pro recently added the ability to run Metro apps in a window. Although I don't think they get a button on the taskbar which is what I would have liked.

You get the Charms bar when you swipe in from the right side of the touchpad. Whether you can disable that "feature" depends on your touchpad. (I can't, and I sure agree with you on how annoying it is.) The author of this article has not yet heard the news that Microsoft abandoned "Metro" a long time ago, but there is a lot of info in there.

I've spent ages scouring Google and trying different things but with no joy and so would appreciate any help!

I upgraded my Windows 7 laptop to Windows 8 and none of the apps work and they all show offline. When I open the desktop I can use the internet with no problem. In the network and sharing options it says that I am not connected to a network when clearly I am so I'm guessing it is possibly a network/IPv6 issue?

Any ideas?

A:Windows apps won't connect to the internet although the desktop will

Hi. I have a problem that is more or less like yours. Yesterday i installed my McAfee paid account here in my win 8 laptop and the installation gone wrong. Then the apps on start menu never open again. They start and stay in loading menu and never stop. I think that it have something to deal with the firewall or something because i tried to change my account to a Microsoft user account and it says that i have some troubles with the internet saying that it can't connect to microsoft services right now.

Any ideas?! Help please! =)

You've booted to a Windows 8.1 installation DVD and installed, right? While your previous version of Windows was still running did you check to make sure that the PC is compatible with 8.1?

Hi all,

our laptop is 6 months old (Lenovo G585), it had mcafee security trial which has expired. Last week, I noticed that everytime I opened up my google pin, facebook pin, any pin, it reverted to desktop screen from the tile screen and will launch the site from old fashioned internet explorer.
It did take me a while to get used to windows 8 operation but I am used to it now and want it back! I don't get any black banners along bottom anymore for example, it the just pressing back on top left like the olden days, what have we done?
it also likes to kick us off the sites and is going slower.
Thankyou for reading x

In Windows 10, Microsoft seems to be extending the modern media playback controls to desktop apps. In Windows 8, if you changed your PC?s volume using a hardware volume button on you device or on the keyboard, you got an on-screen volume control display. If you had a modern (Windows Store) application playing a media file, you got an on-screen playback controls in addition to the volume control. This feature was mostly aimed at touch tablet devices running Windows. It is also similar to how Windows Phone behaves. With Windows 10, this functionality seems to be extended to desktop applications as well.

I stumbled upon this feature accidentally a couple of days ago when I was playing a media file on my Surface Pro using Windows Media Player. This is a desktop application of which the current version dates back to Windows 7. When I changed to volume using the volume rocker in the Surface Pro, I was surprised to see the media controls show up allowing me to easily control playback using touch.
