Computer will not boot past bios screen, Compaq Presario SR...

Q: Computer will not boot past bios screen, Compaq Presario SR...

Ok. Trying to fix a friend's computer, and seem to have run into a rather strange snag. Problem: The computer will not boot past the bios screen. Details: When you power on the computer, the compaq logo with intel inside shows up and has the <F1 Setup> and <F10 System Recovery> options listed as well. And this is about as far as the computer gets. After this the whole computer is just locked up, no buttons work on the keyboard no lights come on the keyboard ect ect. I've tried mashing on the F1 key as soon as I power on the computer and I can manage to get it to say *entering setup* but it still freezes after this point. I've already tried eliminating possible sources of problem, all expansion cards removed, HDD and Dvd Rom disconnected, single memory module (256mb ddr 2700), only power, vga, and keyboard connected. Ive also used the jumper on the motherboard to clear the cmos hoping that would solve the problem, to no avail. I've tried using a different stick of memory and different memory slot as well... Tried using both a ps2 and a usb keyboard... Ive even tried pulling out the jumper for the bios password protection (even though it didn't have a password on it, just trying anything I can think of). The installed bios version is 3.1, and that is about all I know about the computer at this point, other than what the website tells me of it. <-- link to the webpage for the model #. I am basically at a loss on this one, so if anyone feels up to racking their brain on this one, I would greatly appreciate it. I've got a pretty strong knowledge of computer repair, so feel free to give me anything to try. If you need anymore info out of me, let me know as well.

Try clearing the CMOS again but this time remove the CMOS battery and hold the power button in for a few seconds. Then replace the battery and try booting up again. On the back of the pc is the PSU condition led green or flashing?

When I start the computer up it goes to bios screen. It will not let me continue by pressing f2. F1 takes me to help screen, but when I exit that it is right back to bios screen and f2 does nothing.

Hi, My Computer a Compaq Presario SR1810NX with Windows XP Home Edition SP2 is having an issue with it wont get past the Compaq Logo Screen, like, I press the power button the PC powers on, Fan Speeds up and then slows down as normal, keyboard lights flash as normal and the Compaq Logo along with the v3.48 and ESC = Boot Menu options appear on screen, the things is that it wont get past this screen, it just sits there at the Compaq screen, the keyboard and mouse dont seem to be interacting with the PC since I press ESC or F10 for boot mode or system recovery but the PC wont answer at all, I've already Disconnected power source unplugged mouse, keyboard all but PC is doing the same thing just sitting at the Compaq Logo Screen, the computer doesnt make any sound at all no beeps or anything, it wont let me access Windows at any time, recent installations well could be that I just installed a Mobile Bandwidth Card just a couple of weeks ago, and also just a few days ago I connected my iPod Shuffle 2nd Gen to the computer and the computer wont recognize it at all, not even charging, I know this might be a virus or malicious software, but my computer has barely connected to the internet in the last weeks (I couldn't pay the Internet and I had to use my friend's Mobile Bandwidth Card I mentioned before) all I did while in Internet with the Mobile Bandwidth was some schoolwork and youtube videos, I need help urgently with this since I have to deliver a very important proyect for scho... A:Compaq Presario SR1810NX Not Getting Past Compaq Logo Screen

Try a power drain.
1. Unplug power cord
2. Hold power button in for 60 seconds or more then let go
3. Plug in power cord
4. turn on the power and try to boot to setup (BIOS)

If it enters the BIOS then you should be able to just press F5 to reset to defaults and then F10 to save and exit. The PC should work now.

However, if after the power drain you still can not get in the BIOS than there is a MAJOR problem which would require some type of repair.

I was working on a customer's laptop, a Compaq CQ60, that refused to boot into windows and System Recovery disabled all recovery options except for Command Prompt.

On a hunch, after pressing Escape during BIOS boot, I selected HDD Test. The test ran and failed with "Replace Hard Drive." OK.. the laptop sat there for a few minutes and never did anything else, so I tried to get out of that screen. Nothing responded, so I just held the Power button to turn the computer off.

When I pressed Power again to turn the computer back on, the Power and Wireless LEDs comes on, the CD drive is accessed and then the HDD LED lights up for a second and goes out. The screen never comes up nor do the backlights.

I have tried hooking up an external monitor, but that never shows anything either.

I have tried taking the memory out, cleaning the contacts, putting them back in, swapping the modules around, booting with one or the other.... No effect.

I pulled the battery and the CMOS battery, unplugged AC and let it sit for a good half hour. I held the Power button for thirty seconds. Plugged the CMOS battery back in then the AC. Turned it on and still no go.

I cannot figure out WHAT could have happened!? Any other ideas? Thanks...

Hi, i bought a 6150b from a company auction. Everything worked perfect for the longest time. Then last week i went to go turn it on, and all it does is run the CPU fan for a couple seconds, flash the AC LED about 7 - 8 times, and while thats flashing the power and hard drive LEDs stay solidly lit. Then it completely turns off. This all lasts about 3 seconds at the most. Thats what happens when on battery power.

When on AC power, the same thing happens, except it continues doing the cycle over and over again until I unplug it.

I think it might have something to do with the LCD monitor, since it does not even show a slight flicker at all. No color change like it would from when turned off to a black back lit screen when turning on.simply nothing.

I opened her up (no warranty anyways) and checked all the connections for the keyboard, monitor, DVD drive etc....also reseated them as well, with no luck.

Pulled the both RAM modules and reseated them as well, nothing.

Pulled the battery as well, no change. Still cycles the same over and over again while on AC

There are no audible errors codes (real nice HP...), and im lost at this point.

Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated.

A:Compaq Presario 6150b wont boot - no BIOS screen - powers on and off repeatedly

I think instead of just pulling and replacing the CMOS battery you might purchase a new one and install it. Proceed from there. If you get a screen and it's still has a problem try a new PSU. Jazz

I'm running a Dell Dimension 2400 under Windows XP, and seemingly out of nowhere while searching on google, the whole computer shut off. Now, I get the BIOS loading screen, then it all goes to black and stays black. No mouse icon, no text cursor on the screen, nothing. I tried booting in safe mode but that didn't work. If there's any help anybody can provide on trying to get this up and running I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you in advance.

A:Computer won't boot up past BIOS screen

Please try the following:Download NTBR_CD.exe and create a bootable CD. * Save the file to your Desktop and double-click it. This will create a folder named NTBR_CD. * Open the folder and locate BurnItCD. Launch it by double-clicking it. * When BurnCDCC opens, click Start - the CD tray will open. * Insert blank CD and click OK. * The tray will close, burn the image then eject the disk.Run chkdsk. * Boot the affected computer with the new CD. * Once presented with the boot screen please hit <ENTER> to boot from CD. * After a warning screen there is a keyboard language options screen - press <ENTER> to leave it at EN-US. You should now be at the Tool options screen. * Type 5 and press <ENTER> to go to a command prompt. At the command prompt type the following bolded command then press <ENTER> tools\ntfs4dos\chkdsk You will be prompted (in German) to press Enter. * Press <ENTER> to start the check disk utility. Check Disk will check all attached drives and attempt to correct any errors. Please make a note of any errors found or corrections made. * When it completes type "menu" and press <ENTER> to return to the tools menu. * Type 6 and press <ENTER> to quit, then Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart.Allow the computer to attempt booting normally and let me know the outcome.

I have an old Compaq Armada 3500 laptop that I bought years ago to help me through college. After that it kinda gathered dust a little until recently when I wanted to dig it back out and just use it to play a few games on and whathaveyou. It booted up fine when I first did it but it soon transpired that it was absolutely chocablock with viruses and spyware and it was running terribly.

So, on what now looks to have been a foolish move, I did a C: drive format in the hope of popping in a Win98SE installation disc and have it boot from that to re-install Windows.

However, now it won't boot up past the COMPAQ initial screen and a "602: Diskette Read Driver Error" or something keeps flashing up.

Is there any way to get into the BIOS settings to set the CD Drive as the first in the boot-up line-up, or are there recovery discs I can download that'll at least get me into DOS?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

A:Compaq Armada 3500 Laptop Won't Boot Up Past Compaq Screen...

Well you should be able to access the CMOS Bios by using either the delete, F1 or F2 keys (sometimes f10). Then under the Bios you should see the Boot Sequence and be able to change it from there. But either way, you should be able to get past the Compaq splash screen. Try setting your boot sequence and see if that helps.

it then shows "f1 to retry boot f2 to setup" or something like that. f1 doesnt work, just reprints the same thing; f2 takes me to the bios.
any help would be appreciated.

Pentium 4 1.7 GHz, 1024 mb [2*256, 1* 512], Compaq.

Found this machine without HD or memory.

Added an old HD and booted one time to XP but I couldn't pass the admion login screen without the password. With other HDs it had various problems. It said a few times an error with the IDE cable. I tried 4 different ones and kept getting the same error, so I doubt its that.

I removed the battery and reset the CMOS then replaced the battery. On startup the memory counts up and stops at 832 mb and a message says there is a problem with the memory and to try removing memory sticks to isolate it. That is 192 mb short of the total: Is that relevant?

Now it gives 2 beeps at startup, which if what I have read on these sites in correct means a memory error.
So I tried the different sticks separately but with all it gives a 2 beep code at startup.
I swapped the HD again, and maybe that is another separate problem, as an IDE DPS self test says it failed completion code 7. Now when I try to boot I get "NTLDR is missing, press any key to restart".

Also, when I go to BIOS, often the boot order has changed by itself. Also, one of the first times I went to BIOS it didn't even recognize a hard drive but then booted from it anyway!

I am not offered in the bios any Voltage analysis of the system to check the PSU.

Hello! I'm new here to these forums hoping to find a solution to this problem that has been bugging me for days and keeping me from setting up my computer.

Basically after several years, I am finally dealing with the loss of my Hard-Disk drive that came with my computer. I have bought a new Samsung Spinpoint F3 HD502HJ as a replacement, and I am having trouble setting it up. Here are a few Specs for my computer:

Compaq Presario SR1303WM
AMD Sempron 3000+
BIOS Revision 3.11
Mother Board: ASUS A7V8X-LA

It's a bit of an older computer. The HDD that failed me used the old ATA standard, and I am going from that to SATA II (3 Gb/s). My motherboard does have two SATA ports on it, but I don't think the motherboard supports 3 Gb/s transfer rate. Only 1.5 Gb/s. I have an SATA cable that connects directly from the HDD to the MoBo as well as a power converter that I use to connect power to the new HDD. I am using a jumper on the fifth and sixth pins ::[:]: <--- looks like that. The reason I am using a jumper is because I have read by other people that this puts the device into the 1.5 Gb/s mode, although I'm not entirely sure. The Samsung manual my HDD came with says that in order to put the drive into this mode, you must download and use their software from their site, which I have tried and failed. When I run Samsung's software, I get the error: "Error reading from drive L: data area: drive not ready (A)bort, (R)etry, (F)ail?"... Read more

any help would be great and aslo people have been telling me that my motherboard could be warped how would i fix this without buying a new one because i have no money at all for the laptop.

A:compaq presario v6000 wont display bios and screen is black

It looks like you may have Bad Ram: Compaq BIOS Beep Codes - BIOS Central.
Computer Does Not Start and Emits an LED or Beep Code Compaq Presario SR5510F Desktop PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English) Or it could be the Video adapter on the motherboard. Try removing one stick of RAM and get to the Bios. You can also download the ISO image for Memtest in my signature burn the image to CD with IMGBurn also in my signature or USB and boot off of the disc and run the tests on each stick of RAM separately.

Good Afternoon,

My 12 year old daughter was working on her report last night. She pulled a couple of pictures from some website (she is not suppose to do that without me) and went to print the report. It would not print. When she called me to fix it, the computer was trying to install unknown hardware???? Then the idiot that I am, while I am talking to her about the importance of not googling pics without me being there, decides to reboot the computer. I know better than to do this but..... was having a bad day. Let me add that when I asked she said that she got a message from panda but it wasn't red so she didn't think she needed to let me know. I am not sure I am posting to the right forum, but here is my info:

I am running Win XP on a Compaq presario 3045a. All updates are loaded. I run Panda Antivirus + Firewall 2008. It is also current and ran clean 2 or 3 days ago. When I boot up it shows the black screen with Compaq in red. It doesn't go past that screen. I have tried F8 to go into safe mode and F10 for rom based setup without success. Frankly I have tried all F keys and nothing works. The cd drive does read but it doesn't load anything. I have tried the Panda install disk (hoping I could scan for virus), Compaq disks and XP Home edition disks. It did not work. I also tried to use an external cd rom drive knowing it probably wouldn't work and I was right. Let me add that I have an external floppy if necessary to fix this problem... Read more

If you have not slipstreamed you SATA drivers into your XP disc, see if there is a setting for the SATA drive to change it from AHCI to IDE or Compatibility mode.

I have big problem with my ~3 year old PC which started a few days ago.

The problem:

When I turn on my computer I see the BIOS splash screen, and if I don't touch it, it will remain on this screen indefinitelly. I can get past this screen by pressing the tab key (to see the BIOS POST Message), or by hitting DEL to run Setup; however, I never get into the setup screen, it simply moves on to the BIOS POST Screen.

On the BIOS POST Message I can seethe usual messages such as
"Initializing USB Controllers .. Done."
"12280MB OK"

but no error messages signifying that anything is wrong.

I can hit <F8> which then says "Boot Selection Popup menu has been selected". Or <ALT> + <F2> which then triggers the message "ASUS EZ Flash 2 will be executed".

However, again, it never goes past the actual BIOS POST Message.

The keyboard keeps being responsive, I can enable / disable shift lock, etc.
What I've tried so far:

At first I thought the battery may cause this, I tried
- booting with a fresh battery (CR2032)
- booting without a battery, including leaving it without power overnight first
- clearing the BIOS with the reset pins on mobo, and then booting

I then tried to make sure any excess hardware wasn't the problem
- I only left keyboard and screen connected for all further tests
- booting without any harddrives / optical drives connected
- booting with only 1 stick of RAM (there's 6 slots which are all fille... Read more

Hello Senobris. Welcome to the forum.

You have done everything I would do at first to test the system. So much for any easy fixes.

To be clear, you cannot get into the BIOS settings? The system will show the product splash screen, or be forced to start the startup routine, but stops at that point - correct?

What exactly is the last thing on the screen when it stops? Is it always the same thing?

EDIT: Feeling pretty stupid. I had assumed since the monitor was able to work for several hours while in safe mode, the problem was not the monitor. Plugged it into my laptop, same symptoms. It works for a few seconds, then goes black. Always check the obvious things first!

Hey all,

My display went black today during use. Since then, I have been unable to boot normally. The majority of the time I boot to the BIOS screen, then the screen goes completely black quicker than it normally would transition to the typical black page/white text. I have tried booting into safe mode, but my success in doing so is pretty random. On the rare occasions I have been able to boot into safe mode, I've updated my graphics driver and scanned using Kaspersky (full scan turned up nothing). Neither of these helps. I've also tried removing all USB devices, which seems to help me boot into safe mode sometimes but completely useless at others. How do I get my computer to boot normally again?

Hello guy and gals, I've been trying to diagnose this problem with the help of a few friends and we're out of ideas at this point.

The computer in question is a home built PC the worked fine for two years before this problem occurred,I'm told the problem first started when it got a virus but I don't know for sure. The PC has an Asus P5N32-E SLI MB and it's running Vista Home Premium 32-Bit.

When I start the computer it loads to the bios splash screen and normally freezes there, occasionally I'm able to get into the bios before it freezes where I can see that all of the temps are normal and nothing jumps out as unusual, however I only have about 20 seconds to look through it before it freezes. Before this started it would just just keep rebooting when it got to the post screen with occasional distortion of the bios splash screen.

I have tried replacing the hard drive with a known working one, and I have replaced the video card with a known working one; I have also pulled all of the ram out of the computer and tried each stick individually without success. I have pulled the battery several times and cleared the capacitors and so far I have gotten nowhere.

Any ideas are greatly appreciated, thank you in advance for your help.

Only suspects left then are Motherboard/CPU and PSU. I guess you can try to check atleast CPU in some other board if possible to start with.

My Compaq Armada 3500 won't boot past COMPAQ logo. It wont boot to Floppy or CD and I cant enter BIOS to change any settings. I have 2 of these laptops (I bought them both used). My other one had the same similar problem when I got it, but I fixed by removing the cmos battery for 30 minutes and rebooting after I put it back in without the HD in the case. It told me error 162 options not set, and date and time had to be reset, and to hit F1 to save the settings. I did and rebooted. It booted to my floppy Win98 boot disk fine, and then I put in a COMPAQ setup for portables and a DIAG floppy and set it up to boot to multi boot. It runs like a charm now for its size.
But the other one will not accept any of these options although it does tell me the same message after I remove the CMOS battery and put it back in as I did the other one. But when I reboot, it still doesnt see the floppy, CDROM or let me boot to bios to enter setup. It just shows the COMPAQ logo and says "non system disk, remove the disk and hit a key when ready." I have removed the hard drive, removed the CD ROM, and removed the floppy on seperate occasions to see if any of them were the problem, but no change. I took the whole thing apart, and put it back together hoping something would end up being connected to the problem, but it still doesn't change the problem. Next to selling it for parts, any ideas? Its in great shape, has a nice 13 inch lcd and good floppy and cd-roms, and 192 ram.

Hi everyone:

I have a Dell Inspiron 1720 with Vista. Days ago I remember downloading something that made my laptop reboot. Upon rebooting, I still can't get past the bios screen. (Actually I do, but only to a black screen with a blinking cursor.) I've pressed F12 to change the boot order to CD Drive. Ive inserted a vista bootable disk in and heard it spinning and working. Seconds later, I get an error along the lines of, "Not a bootable disk, press X to retry". I've tried the test that is available in the F12 setup, but no errors were detected.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Okey, here it goes....
A long time ago in a galaxy far far away..
My pc decides not to boot past the bios flash screen.

- So i got a new sata hdd not long ago.

- I had Ubuntu and Windows 7 on duel boot. They both worked fine and never gave me any trouble.

- Decided i didn't want duel boot anymore.
I just wanted a fresh install of Windows 7
because im going to be upgrading the mobo, ram, CPU and gfx card.
Basically everything going to be upgraded over the course of the next couple of weeks.

- So i proceeded to format my 500gb sata hdd and install Windows 7.

- After the files copied from the dvd to the hdd my pc rebooted as expected.

- Then the normal boot screen appeared. this is where it hangs.

This is pretty much what i see:

Press del to run setup
Press f8 for BBS POPUP
DDR Frequency...... blah blah
Initializing usb controllers.. done.
Auto-Detecting Pri slave... IDE Hard Disk
Auto-Detecting 3rd slave... CD/DVD ROM
Sec Master: ST3500418AS CC38
Ultra DMA Mode-5 S.M.A.R.T. Capable and Status OK
It just hangs on this.

- I cant boot from dvd or cd
- I cant press del to run setup, it just says entering and does nothing else
- I cant press f8 for bbs popup, it just does the same as pressing del

If i remove the sata hdd i can then press del or f8 and it lets me into the bios.
same with the dvd drive. If the hdd is unplugged then i can boot from the dvd.
what i think the problem might be is my processor. its pentium 4... old... Read more

I'm new and skipped my intro, down to business:

I took my pc to my mom's friends house to keep me entertained for the night. It fell over in the boot, but worked fine when i plugged her in. i played games for a while an hour or so, when i decided to do some research. i needed my moms netbook for this, and left my brother and his friend to jam some guitar hero on my pc. i came back about 10 mins later to grab my flash - everything was all good. another 5 minutes later, i went back, and the pc was on the initial boot screen. i asked what happened, they said the pc just switched off and restarted when they plugged in the mic. from then on, it wouldnt pass the boot screen.

What usually happens:
When i boot, it shows a blue and black intel background with a second intel logo in a small white box, with a command prompt box with the number 50 in it. 2-3 seconds later, post beep comes, 50 goes to 51 and the same time bios hotkeys show up, then 50 turns to ENG, then pc boots.

What is happening:
Its stuck on "50", and no post beep comes.
sometimes it takes a few more seconds to get past the "50", but never more than 10 seconds.
All fans and lights come on, hard drive spins too.

What i've tried to fix it:
Mix and match the ram in different slots, no change in situation
removed ram to see if mobo would detect it was missing, it did.
removed graphics card to see if it would detect it missing, no post beeps? (although it does display when plugged in)... Read more

Hi guys,
I've done a little reading on this subject but couldn't find anything concrete in terms of an answer.

My PC has been working fine up until last night, but when I booted up tonight, it got as far as the HP Inspect blue screen (with options for Setup, Boot Screen etc) but it went no further. Trying to go into setup, boot menu etc only got as far as a flashing cursor and thats it.

The PC will not boot from a CD either. The BIOS version is v02.06 which I believe is the latest one. I've checked all the connections and they are spot on.

Could it be my motherboard is dead? I noticed a button called CMOS Reset, but i'm not sure what it does so I haven't pressed it. Maybe resetting the BIOS might do the trick but I don't know how to do that.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello lilevee22,

Before the problem started was anything added to or installed on the system?

Try booting to Last Known Good or Safe Mode.

Restart the computer during the boot process repeatedly tap "F8" you should get

the Advanced Options.

Let us know if able to get the system to boot with either option.

Hi everyone,

I'm having a little trouble with my PC... I hope I've come to the right place. I left my computer in "suspend" last night, and when I sat in front of it this morning, it was frozen at my BIOS screen. Each time I try to restart it, it goes straight to that screen. I can't even access my BIOS settings (pressing keyboard buttons doesn't work). Nothing changed when I placed my XP disk in the ROM drive.

I'm using an ASUS mobo and AMD processor (sorry, I can't recall the particular models right now). I have not changed any hardware or installed new software recently except anti-virus definitions.

Does this sound like a motherboard or PSU issue?

I'd really appreciate any suggestions!

A:Computer won't boot past BIOS

Unless someone has a better idea, you could remove the CMOS battery for about
5 to 10 minutes. Be sure to unplug computer before you remove the battery.
Then see if you can reboot into BIOS to reset it.

Hey guys, I've been having trouble the past few days trying to get my computer to boot up. About 2 weeks ago my 150gig raptor HD went bad and i replaced it, formatted the HD and put 64 bit xp on it. Everything was going fine for a few days. I was downloading a file off limewire (big mistake) when all of the sudden the computer started getting very laggy, then would restart randomly.. and then each time it finished booting up at the desktop, it would blue screen error then reboot all over again. This process happened several times until finally it would boot up and get stuck at the motherboard screen. I couldn't access the Bios nor boot in safemode, it wouldn't even do POST test.

I opened up the case and unplugged, plugged everything back in and dusted it out. I was then able to boot to safemode and run a few virus scans. After that, i booted up to last good known configuration and everything seemed to be fine for a couple days, but then this problem started again. Everytime i boot up the computer, it just sits at the mobo screen and won't let me do anything. I'm thinking the power supply may be going but i'm not sure. Thanks for any help in advance.

Specs: AMD dual core 4200, 4 gigs ram, 150g raptor HD, 320g hd, 8800gt vid card, and i believe 450 w psu.

Hi guys,

After opening it up and making sure the motherboard/ other component cables were correctly plugged in, it successfully booted and worked normally, until I turned it off and on again, now, its back to square one :(
It's hardware specs are as follows:
1 Xigmatek NRP-MC 650W, 1 Sapphire HD4850 1G DDR3 1G 256Bit GDDR3 PCIE2, 1 Samsung 1TB SATA II 7200RPM 32M, 1 OCZ 3G(3x1G) DDR3 10666 Platinum CL-7-7-7-20,

1 Intel Core i7 920 Processor LGA1366 2.66GHz 8MB Cache CPU, 1 Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD4P MB - I'm also using a usb logitech keyboard, which only starts working once I get to the windows login screen....

Any help with diagnosing what's not working and how to fix it would be really appreciated, thanks.

The computer is an Acer Extensa 4630 laptop Vista O/S. This is my mother in laws computer it was running slow so I figured i would try to help her out. I helped her out alright lol.

The computer was fine albeit slow until I ran Ccleaner and the registry cleaner (from the same program) c cleaner removed 7.2 gigs of stuff. I saved a back up before the reg fix. I then did a disk clean up, after that I scheduled a disk check and restarted the computer. Upon restarting the computer will not go past the bios screen.

I tried F8 to put it in safe mode so I could reverse the disk check. I selected safe mode hit enter then the same thing, bios screen then black. Tried F8 again and this time I tried a restore it started to restore then it shut down mid way with an error. The error was " the instruction at 0x7444060a referenced memory at 0x00000000 the memory could not be read" After that I tried F8 again and tried a memory test and it went until about 53% and shut off again. This time with no error message.

I am not sure if this is by coincidence or if I caused this. I don't think i caused this to happen because I do this maintenance on my families computers all the time with no problems.

She also had a similar problem about six months ago after a few attempts and holding down the start button for 30 seconds it has worked fine until yesterday.

You need to get the BIOS from Compaq. While the board maybe MADE by another company, who knows what slight changes to the specs were made.

First congrats on an excellent forum and helpful members. I have used the info this site loads of times before reading past threads and until now have never needed to post...

So here goes.
I have just installed a fresh (not new) hard drive in my system which is;
Fujitsu Siemens Esprimo P5600
AMD Athlon 64 3500+
2GB Ram
160GB SATA Hard drive
XP Pro SP3

The drive had XP already installed but was configured for an Athlon Dual Core system so i did a clean install. Deleted all partitions then created a new partition with NTFS file system (the slow method to check for disk errors)

Then i installed XP pro Sp2 all done from Fujitsu operating system recovery CD.
All went flawlessly and was working great.
Next day i went to boot and the splash screen came up with Fujitsu Siemens on it and the F2 or F12 options and the blue progress meter. The progress meter got to half way and then hung for about 2 mins and a black screen came up with a load of writing on and the message;

pxe-e61: media test failure, check cable
operating system not found

I did read a thread on techguy about this but it didnt solve my problem and my symptoms are quite different.

If when i see the splash screen i immediately press F2 to go to bios setup i can enter setup and view all settings. The HD is present and boot priority set to Hard drive. I then exit without saving or changing anything and it boots into windows and works fine.

If i do a restart from windows it boots fine. Its only when i shut down and re... Read more

Now the OS is installed on the raptor the other drives are just storage drives I keep nothing but movies, music, installers Ect.... I was able to install the OS and boot up for he first 8 hours. In that time I downloaded PC mark a few other bench... MSN, ventrilo, the works. I did a burn in and after restarted the compuer. Perfect. Everything is working fine. I played some BF2 and world of warcraft for about 2 hours and everything was running great. I downloaded Alcohol 120 and installed it (To run an ISO files installer of a game) and then I had to restart the computer so I did. At this point When it loaded back up it loaded Past bios, past windows screen, and to the point where I could see the mouse in the middle of the screen. It then stopped there and did not go any further. I restarted the computer again. This time it went all the way into windows. I was able to play games again.

Now, I restarted the computer about 40 minutes later and now this time it stopped again at the point where the mouse first apears again like the first time it had froze up, right before you can see windows desktop so, I restarted the computer again and this time it... Read more

Hello all. I wasn't sure where to post this exactly, so I hope this is the right place. If not, can a mod please move it? Thanks.

My girlfriend has a laptop that's a few years old running Windows XP. A couple weeks ago, it stooped booting into Windows. Anything after the post wouldn't show up and the computer just froze on a blank black screen. Her CD drive doesn't work, so I took out the hard drive and placed it in an enclosure. Plugged it into my computer and I can access everything. I've already scanned the disk with antivirus software and MBAM and then copied the entire drive over to one of my external HDs in case something happened to it.

I'm running a new laptop with Vista Home Premium 64 bit and that supports USB booting. I'm trying to determine if the MBR on her hard drive was damaged or if there's some other hardware issue on her laptop by booting the drive from USB. I set my BIOS to boot from USB first, but it doesn't boot from the external drive. Does this mean the MBR is damaged? If so, how can I restore the MBR to make the drive bootable again?

Additionally, would it be possible to do a reinstall of Windows to the laptop hard drive using my computer (seeing as the CD Drive on her computer is broken)? I can't swap out my hard drive with hers because my computer uses SATA and her drive is ATA.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much in advance.

I have a custom built computer (my brother built it), it's very lightly used, lately I've just been using it to upload photos and use photoshop. Anyway today MSI scan said there was a bios update available so I went through all the steps to download and install, it said the computer would restart. The computers screen went black (like it shut down) but the tower lights and fans stayed on. I thought maybe it was still doing something so I left it alone but after over an hour nothing had changed, I did a force shut down (holding the power button until it turned off) but now when I turn the computer back on it won't get past the MSI screen where it says to press del to run bios setup it f11 to run boot menu. I've tried pressing both but nothing happens. Also the computer doesn't have a cd drive so I can't repair with the bios disc or windows disc. Please help!

There is a pass word to the BIOS and you need to take out the motherboard battery to erase it. Leave it out for 5 secs, unplug the computer and turn it on unpluged to drain all the power out of it. then reinstall the battery and reboot.
You m,ay have to remove some of the perifs CD burner, JS Ect if it dosent work the first time to drain the power out of everything

A:Windows Xp Install was interupted now computer will not boot past bios

There's not a lot in a failed XP instakllation that can have such a catastrophic effect as this. Remove the CD from the drive, disconnect the power cable for a minute and try the power on switch again. If it starts, it will fail to find an OS so close it as instructed and put the CD back in.

I suggest you clean the disk first by gently, and with a finger only, rubbing a small amount of toothpase over it then taking that off with some lint or other soft cloth and DEFINITELY NOT any wood based paper materials.

Key: 87231156"Other threads indicate that this is a common issue. May I please have my master BIOS password? And is there any other way to recover this? Thank you so much!Brandon

Hello, I am posting after my topic in the HJT forum. I was being assisted, when now my computer won't turn on at all.

It seems my laptop has done the same thing as my computer (which apparently has the same alike virus). It turns off after the Windows XP boot screen. My laptop runs on Windows Media Center Edition, and did not come with any discs with which to boot up from (like my computer did). It only came with a disc to wipe the whole drive. It will not boot into Safe Mode, or ANY of the options when you tap F8 in the beginning, as I have tried this already.

A:Computer Will Not Go Past Boot Screen

Have you used any programs like Logon Studio? I you have and you applied a logon screen which won't work then you will need to put your main hard drive in another computer and replace a file called LogonUI.exe with the original one. (other alternatives are doing a clean install or just repairing the file, system restore or take it into a computer store and it will cost about $20 if you tell them this)

On the other hand if you haven't used logon screens editiors then it may be a virus or the LogonUI.exe file is damaged. Mabye there is a virus in LogonUI.exe.

If you tell me if any error messages come up then I can help you more.

Sorry if you didn't understand. New user.

I recently installed Windows 7 on my computer. Fresh install, remove everything else that was previously on the computer. It installed fine, with no problems. I tried to change the screen resolution, and the screen went black and would not revert. Frustrated, I re-reinstalled 7, and everything went swimmingly. Until, of course, the 2nd reboot, when my computer would not load past the computer boot up screen (the screen that gives options such as Boot Order, ect.). It simply goes to a black screen with the "_" underscore, and then "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD . . . .", then back to the blue boot up screen.

I've tried re-re-reinstalling, and I still get the same result. This happens after the reboot you must complete after choosing your name and password.

I've tried the Repair option, and it did not find any faults within the system.

I've also used this CD to install 7 on my laptop, which worked great.

Please, any advice as to what I should do would be so great!

Can you get into safe mode by hitting the F8 key during the boot? If so, try changing the video resolution back to where it was.

What type of video output are you using and what type of monitor/s?

I have a 2007 Gateway Laptop Model MT3423. I recently installed windows xp on it. It worked fine for a couple days. One day it just turned off and when i went to turn it on again it would boot to the first screen (Gateway Screen) then to a blank screen with a white dash flashing in the corner. The display is lit, the lights on the computer are on and the fan is running. I can go to the BIOS Menu but thats it. When I put a cd in it will say press any key to boot from cd and then after you press that the screen goes the same again. HELP, I need to fix my computer. Hello all great website!

Compaq Presario 7000 series (model #7QSM11) using Windows ME, AMD 1332 mhz processor. My sister's computer. Hard drive was a 60GB, but it died. So I bought a new hard drive actually tried a 160GB first but thought the 137GB issue was the problem so now I am trying a 120GB western digital Caviar.

I found and successfully flashed the latest bios. (ROM date 3/28/02-786K2 Family). I checked the bios and it does see all 120GB. But when I goto partition it, I run into problems. Three methods tried: I tried to use Western Digitals included CD-ROM, even created the DOS boot floppy that they recommended on another system. Doesn't work keeps coming up with an error that something like A:\Auto???.exe not found. I checked the floppy that file is there?? Comes up whether I am booting from the floppy or from the CD-ROM.

So I tried fdisk from a Windows ME boot disk. Fdisk will only find/or report 24GB. I cleared the partition and tried using the Compaq restore disks but they came up with the same problem.
Am I right in thinking that this is a Windows ME issue?
Can you tell me how to fix this problem?

My computer is a Dell 8100, also running Windows ME but with a Intel P4, I installed a 200GB hard drive and had to flash the bios, and then I am not sure if it was Maxtor's DDO dynamic disk overlay or Intel's application accelerator, or the Flashed Bios, but Windows ME sees the whole hard drive.

I am so frustrated, I am not completely stupi... Read more

Hi, I have an unusual problem with a Dell Desktop. At the location where the computer is assigned (it's a work computer) the computer will not boot past the first Dell boot screen. it is on the screen where it says to Hit F2 for setup, F12 for boot options..etc.. There is a bar that fills up while booting, well this bar never fully fills up it just freezes on this screen.

If I take the computer to my location the computer boots and runs just fine. I know this other location has had power issues in the past and am thinking it is an issue with the power at the location but none of the other computers at the location are doing this. I have tried several other outlets at the location and same thing happens. Any ideas or has anybody seen anything like this before? thanks..

I was loading a game on my computer, purchased legally from Wal-Mart. I say this because searching the net seeing if this has happened to others, I found that the illegal shared version on the download sites has had a virus in it, but mine was loaded from a legitimate copy from a store. After loading the additional software needed to play online, my McAfee told me there was a virus. It was Internet Security 2010, and after searching I found this to be Malware. I had just used the forum to remove the Unique8 virus from the laptop, and liked the Malwarebytes program. I couldn't get that to load, every time it would hijack the .exe file. I tried running the Rkill program with all four variations to no avail. Then I ran SuperAnti-Spyware and that actually loaded. It told me the virus was removed and needed to reboot. After the reboot, the Welcome screen would load and that is where it would stop. I didn't have that as part of the boot process and when you click the Administrator tab, my screen loads the walpaper picture, but then goes back to Welcome.

I tried starting in Safe Mode, but could not get it to boot that way. Also, I tried to use my Gateway disc to just restore the computer and that would not work either. That is my only XP disc, the one that Gateway sent to restore the computer, I don't have an actual XP only disc.

The computer is a Gateway, I had just restored it after installing a new DVD drive. It should have been upgraded to SP3.

I had to install drivers for my digital camera on vista. I have two Harddrives, one running XP and the other running vista ultimate. I had to restart my computer and it will not get past the "winfast" screen. It will NOT let me do boot settings, or get into bios.

I can feel both harddrives moving, i have checked all the cables in the computer. I can't even boot from a CD with my XP recovery disk..

Good afternoon. My apologies if this thread is in the incorrect forum.

Here's the issue. I started up my desktop just fine today. No problems at all. I get online and go to a website, I forget which one. One I haven't been to before, for sure. As soon as I access the site, Kapersky starts flipping out about some rootkit virus. I start the virus scan and it notifies me that I need to reboot my computer, so naturally, I do so.

Upon restarting my computer, It goes to the screen asking for safemode and what not. I start it normally, and it goes to the XP splash screen. It loads for a few seconds, then restarts. Finding this rather frustrating, I restart it and choose safe mode with the same results.

I assume this is a boot sector error, so in order to try to reinstall the operating system, I insert the XP boot disk that I have. My computer allows me to attempt to boot from CD, but nothing happens, and it continues to the safe mode screen. I press F8 and choose disable automatic restart on system fail, and it comes up with a BSOD after the XP splash screen. It tells me I need to run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption and to restart. Since I cannot get to the command prompt, I am unable to comply. The error at the bottom of the screen is as follows.

Technical Information:

*** STOP: 0x00000024 (0x001902FE, 0xBA4EB380, 0xBA4AEB07C, 0x8AD54805)

A while ago I was having a lot of problems with my personal computer so I decided to format it and delete everything using DBAN boot & nuke, however I did a secure format which wiped all the drives several times and afterwards I could not get the computer to boot from a CD. This is exactly the same problem that I had with my brother's computer after using DBAN on it so I was a bit stupid to attempt it on mine, however I had done it before on my computer with no adverse effects so I thought I was safe.

I checked all the HDD jumpers and BIOS settings, even bought a new HDD as I thought that may be the problem but it still wouldn't work. So in the end I just hooked the new HDD up to the general family computer and installed Windows XP onto it with that. This worked fine with no problems at all and Windows XP loaded with no problems. I then took the HDD back up to my room and re-connected it to my computer. I booted the computer up and it booted up to the loading screen and got no further. This is still the point I am stuck at now and I don't really know where to go from here.

Some background to the machine: I am using a Pentium 3 I believe, 200gb HDD, Asus Mobo, quite an old setup but and it's had problems such as this in the past (although not identical) and I've always managed to patch it up. I am buying a laptop for myself but I really want to fix this so I can give it to my bro for Christmas so any feedback will be greatly appreciated.

A:Computer won't boot past loading screen

It might be that the hard drive you took back to the computer in your room has problems loading drivers on another machine. If you originally installed XP on one machine and installed drivers for that machine, I would think once you try swapping the drive to another different computer that some devices would complain on the motherboard.

yesterday out of the blue my computer gets stuck on the splash screen, i turn on my computer and when i see its stuck in the splash screen i try to go into POST and see what was up, but i cant get out of the splash screen, and i cant go into safe mode or anything, i cant even go into BIOS. However, if i spam the hell out of the tab key when starting up my computer, it takes me into POST, if i wait untill the splash screen is on i never get into POST, but when i do it only gets to the point where it says, memory OK. the only thing i have considered so far was that maybe its related to my power source, as i just installed a new 7600 gt card and I still have a 350 watt power supply, probably not smart but it seemed to work. I havent tried anything hardware-wise yet and im looking for suggestions.

A:My computer cannot boot past the splash screen please help!

You have a hardware failure. It could be the "new" power supply, bad memory or a failing hard drive. If your motherboard has on-board video, remove the 7600GT and see if the system boots
