Fan noise HP 9470m

Q: Fan noise HP 9470m

Hi, I recently switched to a 9470m Elitebook folio - but the fan noise is killing me when docked in and standing on the desk near me. Is there any possibility to reduce the noise? Already done:- BIOS update- BIOS setting "fan always on on AC power" deactivated Windows 7 x64 Enterprise Already tried speedfan but it seems that it couln`t detect the fan. thanks

A: Fan noise HP 9470m

Its either a faulty fan or a faulty thermal sensor on the board. You need to call tech support to get a case loged to get the issue resolved.

HiNot sure if my post was noticed as posted over weekend and got no reply so I'm trying again.Trouble started with random system restarts anywhere from 2 to 60min after powering on. That lasted a few days. Than it got worse, it was stopping before system boot with error message: motherboard product information missing. After a soft or hard reset (can't remember now) it stopped displaying anything, only LEDs came on and fan run, all lasting about 5s. I tested RAM in other machine, OK. Pulled HD out, no difference. Put a different HD in, no difference. With DC disconnected and battery out I left CMOS battery disconnected overnight. Now it cycles: LEDs and fan come on for about 5s, all off for 1s and tries again. Any help will be appreciated... Best regards

Hi Guys.

I have a fresh image of Windows 7 on my laptop but it will crash frequently when connect to a VPN.

I have only tested this over WIFI and have yet to test over a wired connection.

I have attached the correct file but I think some files may be missing as I can't seem to get the Diagnostics Tool to do a full run through.

Any help would be appreciated

A:BSOD When Using VPN on HP Folio 9470M

Hi BinaryStar0647.

Your BSODs are caused by Sunbelt Personal Firewall driver, a regular BSOD causer which is disconnected from the market from December 2011.

Seeing your files I realized that the drivers are used by some other thing, GFI Software Firewall.

And it is the driver that is failing here.

I have an HP 9470m Elitebook that will not start up on a docking station. When starting up, it freezes on the "Please Wait" screen before login. I have tried it on 3 different docking stations with the same results. The BIOS are up to date. There is a driver update for the dock available, but it requires it to be plugged into to the dock, and when I dock the computer after start-up and try to install, I get the error message: ?Please connect at least one monitor to the dock and then continue.?  Unfortunately, this computer is also now just about 2 weeks out of warranty.

Hi there, I have an issue with non-responsive Brightness Adjustment on my laptop.  Symptom is that brightness does not increase or decrease when adjusting the setting using the FN Key + F9/F10 which are the designated buttons to adjust. There is also no change when I unplug from power outlett (which in theory should make the screen brightness come down). I have installed the latest bio, and have tried looking for new software/drivers, but to no avail... I simply can't reduce the brightness (and it's quite bright - to the point it is uncomfortable to use at night). Suggestions how to handle?

We have 2 x Folio 9470m notebook. 1st has 8GB of memory with the upgraded ram using https://www.skhynix.com/eolproducts.view.do?pronm=DDR3+SDRAM&srnm=HMT451S6AFR8A&rk=20&rc=module  The 2nd only has 4Gb of memory and want to upgrade - I found this other memory cheaper - https://www.skhynix.com/eolproducts.view.do?pronm=DDR3+SDRAM&srnm=HMT351S6CFR8C&rk=20&rc=module  My understanding is the main difference is the what I already have is the Low Power (1.35V vs 1.5V). Does anyone know if Folio 9470m will work with this 1.5V version of the memory? Thanks for your help.

A:PC3 vs PC3L memory for Folio 9470m

From the Service Manual: Two customer-accessible/upgradable memory module slots DDR3 PC3-1600-MHz dual channel support Supports 16384-MB of system RAM in the following configurations: ? 16384-MB (8192-MB×2) ? 8192-MB (8192-MB×1 or 4096×2) The specified memory is 1.5 volt. DDR3L will run at either 1.35 or 1.5 volt but I generally avoid mixing voltages. That is why the DDR3L is working for you and I assume you have 2 of the same in the laptop with 8 gigs.  Can you figure out what is in the 4 gig machine now? I would not mix voltages or density...i.e would not have one module with 8 black blocks and one with 4. Try to match the existing 4 gig module is what I am saying...not the exact brand of memory but the characteristics of it.

I have installed the latest driver (sp66111) from HP Support and as a result only the PointStick and associated buttons work and not the Touchpad. Has anyone experienced this and if so what is the fix please? Incidentally, the Touchpad was working at one stage on this OS and ceased to work afterwards. I have re-stalled the OS from scratch withpout success either. Thanks in advance, Vik

Hi @ARtan-Krasniqi? Welcome to the HP Support forum. Thank you for posting ! Folio is a lovely business class notebook. Most business class notebooks (including yours, Elitebook and Probook, etc...) have better security than consumer class computers. You will have to contact HP Support for business for assistance on removing the password. Here is how >> http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/ww-phone-assist.html>> http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/business-support.html  HP Business support should be able to send you a customised SMC.bin file and instructions which you can use  to reset the password.  Hope this helps. Hi, I work in tech support for a company and one of our enterprise laptops mysteriously has lost its "tattooed" information.  The user who had this laptop left the company and when we went to wipe it we discovered this issue.  Upon starting the machine the HP splash screen has in red text on the top left of the screen "Manufactoring Program Mode set 1 of 10" after the splash screen a "Product Information not Valid" screen appears.  It reads: Product Information not validThe following product information programmed into the system board is missing or invalidSYSTEM BOARD (00A)Product Name Product Serial NumberProduct SKUProduct FamilySystem Board CT NumberENTER - Continue Startup For more information, please visit: www.hp.com/go/techcenter/startup I know that there is an HP utility tool to "tattoo" this information back onto the machine.  As an enterprise that uses 95% HP equipment (our monitors, mouse, keyboards are the only non-HP equipment) I think that the tech support deserves these types of tools to troubleshoot issues.  Sure the machine boots normally if you hit enter, but it's alarming/scandalous to be presented with that product information not valid screen when powering on a machine.  Bonus points to whoever can provide some reasoning as to how this occurred.

This was his father laptop, and he also has no idea about it. So, I'm left here with this laptop, but no way to tinker around with the BIOS. Obviously this isn't good! All sources lead me to this area where can I contact HP support to try to solve my problem.  I opened up two cases.  First one, case ID 4779632926 and did not get response. Second, 4779725521 and this is response i got. " I  really apologize for the inconvenience, unfortunately we will not be able to support this case."  I tried to reply to this case with subject <4779725521> and then I received message that case is closed. We are sorry, but we were unable to process your request.

I am experiencing the following issue and hope that someone in the forum as an idea / suggestion. When I have the screen connected via via display port cable with the docking station and I have my laptop docked, I dont get any signal and the screen keeps black. This is independent of the Operating System - I used Windows 7, Windows 8. When my laptop is docked but I attach the display port cable directly to the laptop it works without any problem. I have also realized that with other displays 23'' or 24'' the setup with the docking station works without a problem. So it has to be a cominbination between UltraSlim Docking Station and ZR2740w screen. Any advise what else should be tried?

Update:  After calling HP technical support I and being bounced among various clueless offshore tech support reps, I finally landed on the US-based workstation support department.  Justin looked up the problem and identified it as a known issue and is replacing my monitor cable with one that HP says will work.   Also, in the meantime there is a workaround that I had figured out.  If you don't use the displayport port on the ultraslim docking station but pug the cable directly into the computer it works fine.  There is some inconvienence associated with this as you have to plug it in every time you dock and unplug it every time you undock (and of course the cable always falls behind the desk while you are doing this), but it is okay as a solution while I am waiting for the new cable to arrive.  Will update this post after it arrives and report whether it works.

Try testing the hard drive and the memory. To test the hard drive go to Computer and right-click on the C drive, select Properties, tools, check now. Set a disk check on the next start up. Let the check finish. To test the memory go here:

Hello, After upgrading from Win7 to Win10, my system got stuck when uninstalling MS Office, and nothing worked anymore (File Explorer etc.). I tried to make a factory reset, which got stuck, too, and no OS would be detected anymore. Then I tried to reinstall Win10 64 bit, which brought be a bit of trouble. I have an HP Folio 9470 with a 320 HDD and a 32 GB (I believe) mSATA. During my Win10 reinstall, I ran into trouble and then deleted all partitions on both drives and reformatted everything because I thought that was the method for a clean reinstall. First, I installed Win10 on the 320 HDD, but my BIOS did not appear to allow this (although harddisk was in the legacy boot options), which the Win10 installer had already warned me about, so I could not boot from my HDD and thus could not start Win10. Next, I reformatted everything and installed Win10 on my mSATA. However, the Win10 installer and later Windows 10 only showed a size of 11GB for the mSATA. The installation itself already took up 11GB and there was no space left for necessary drivers and updates, and Windows 10 malfunctioned. My feeling is that the mSATA was larger than just 11GB, but that a part of it is not shown any more after deleting partitions and reformatting. After multiple reinstalls, I do not know what to do any more. Any idea what how I might get a functioning version of Windows 10 on my HP Folio 9470m? Best regardsFrank

So i'm using a Folio 9470m at work on a 2013 Ultraslim Docking station with 2 Display Port connectors, but if i attach two screens to those it only displays them as one device and mirrors the image on both screens. Furthermore if i go into the screen and resolution settings, both identify as screen 1, but i can set 3840x1080 instead of 1920x1080 and at that moment the picture will span over both screens as one. The downside to this is that the login screen, windows i open for the first time, they're all gonne appear in the middle where the bezels are, it handles them as one bigger screen and not as 2 screens that extend each other. I need them to be detected as 2 seperate screens, and so far i have had no success. Has anyone experienced this or knows a solution? I really don't want to connect the second screen via VGA. Can the folio handle 2 display port connections on a dock? Is this maybe the cause?

So I've had this new system a few days now. After resolving a few annoyances everything seems to be going fine. One thing I noticed was that the system is really quiet, which I love. That all changed today. I hadn't spent any time gaming on the system yet and half-way through a marathon Q3 session it sounded as though another fan had suddenly kicked in, and no ordinary fan, one of those whining so loud it sounds like there's a helicopter taking off type fans. But I figure that's ok, the comp must be getting hot, once it cools down the fan will turn itself off.

Wrong. The new noise is now a constant feature. If I leave the comp idle in XP for hours it remains. If I turn the comp off overnight it's there as soon as I turn it on.

Now, this is a longshot I know, but short of me disconnecting every fan inside my case in turn to even tell which fan is the culprit is there any way I can tell exactly wtf is going on with my fans? Some software to control when the auxilery fan kicks in or some such.

And I'm assuming it must be an auxilery fan... unless one of the others decided to get 50DB louder in an instant.

(System reqs. if it matters:
P42GHz on ASUS P4B533
350w PFC PSU (just what exactly is PFC anyway?)
256mb DDR RAM
ASUS GeForce4 4200
WinXP)

A:Fan noise

Sounds like maybe just one fan is bad- check the one on the video card, too. Either it's stuck on high rpms or something else is heating up inside to cause fan(s) to run on high speed.
There are easy to do replacements if you just have a real noisy fan- if it's a video card problem, that's another problem.

Hello everyone!

I have as some might say "stupid question", the problem is, something weird happened to one of my PCs, when i turn the power on i head a horrible noise, as if some disk\vent is spinning at top speed, anyways it's hard to be precise when you describe a noise, so just imagine you found very old covered with scratches etc dvd and you try to run it on PC - that kind of noise.

Also, since the noise PC runs slower. That just can't be good, the noise and the speed issues.

I've done the following:
Antivirus, Spyware & Adaware checked the whole PC - found some trojans, bakcdoors etc, removed without problems.
Ran the registry cleaner (CCleaner).
Defragmented the drive (with Defraggler).
Installed HDD life pro, checked the temperature, preformance and health of the hard drive - everything is fine here.

After all the optimization and cleaning up, the speed improved a bit, but the noise is still there, and i have no idea where it comes from...

Need help...
Any ideas what it might be? I dont want to go buy some part i dont actually need...
Is there any sopftware i can use to detect the problem?

Is it the power supply fan???

Thanks a lot in advance.

Alright, you know how if you're installing something, it makes that little buzzing noise until it's done?

I can't get that to stop. It's a brand new PC, I was installing a game..and after that, it just WON'T stop. I've uninstalled the game, and it just continues..

It's exactly like that.

update:

I noticed if I run chkdsk, it'll make the noise. If it stops processing files, the noise stops. So i'm assuming something would be accessing my HD 24/7.

Sounds like a virus to me, but I need someone elses opinion.

Hello Naba, and welcome to Seven Forums.

First thing you could do is to post back with more details. For example, a description of the noise, where does it sound like it's coming from, if it does it all the time or after certain actions, etc.......

This will help us to better help you.

The fan on my cpu is making a humming, kinda out of balance sounding noise... is it safe to put a dop of 3 to 1 oil on the thing? Or should I pick up some electrical lube?

Thanks

A:Fan noise

First clean off the fan. It can accumulate dust and get out of balance.

3 in 1 machine oil would probably be as good as anything for that. I doubt that it will be a permanent fix though if the bearing is going.

It's driving me crazy, the noise from my cpu fan is rediculously loud. I've searched and all i could come up with was everything telling me to buy a new one. I just want to know if it's the fan or my computer.

I've used speedfan to check my cpu temp and it says it's at a constant -128C this can't be right

Another Cpu temp program tells me my cpu is at a constant 0C

And lastly looking through my bios the processors temperature zone is at 128C...while the other zones are right around 25C.

I have met a similar problem on other machines, where two options are possible: 1) upgrade the BIOS to the latest level, and/or then reseat the CPU and memory strips and test again, or 2) the mobo CPU slot temperature sensor has died, which means a swap-out on warranty if you have it and it is not expired. If memory serves me correctly this is a re-badge of the COMPAQ DeskPro 325, which is not on HP's current model lists in the UK.

A:Noise

Truthfully? No idea whatsoever. You need to be a lot more specific. Is it a noise from the monitor, conputer or speakers? When does it start? Is there any vibration anywhere?
Please remeber that we cant see or hear your computer, so you need to give as much info as possible. I would expect that the noise comes from the computer itself, if so it could be a fan, power supply, or something catching. But without a bit more, cant say. I would also suggest you post this in hardware not Vista, as it doesnt seem to have any relationship with the OS

Hi willowyang
Noise could be from cdrom do you have a CD in it? More likely you are hearing the cooling fan. Is it off then gets louder as the laptop warms up? The newer laptops make more noise because they run the very small fan at a high rate of speed to cool the faster and hotter processors they have. Its probably normal and I don't think you can do anything without voiding your waranty. Sorry

I wish to know two things: Is there a name given for the noise made when the computer is doing a scan for virus, adware or malware and How and where is this noise generated?

There are no issues/problems other than slow response during these scans. I just would like to know if a name has ever been given for this type of noise. The noise sounds like a Geiger Counter when it detects radiation. Please read on. After the scan is over, no more noise. This has happened with any computer I have ever owned and I hear it on others. It would be nice to know if a name has ever been given to it.

A:Name given for a certain noise.

No idea what "noise" you may be referring to. There should be no particular noise associated with a scan that is not always present. If you have file system damage, a ticking sound may be heard when the drive seeks data. The sound is also produced when a drive has difficult access for other reasons, the partition is damaged, or the drive is heavily fragmented. Some drives tend to "tick" more than others, anyway. The sound is head movement.

Hey I was just wondering if anyone had tips on how to reduce fan noise. My computer is probably the loudest I've ever heard, and now I've been wanting to leave it on overnight but just can't fall asleep with all the racket. I'm using a Raidmax Cobra case. There are two 80mm fans in the rear, and one on the side panel. I unplugged the side one, and it does reduce some noise, but it's still quite loud. Would a 120mm be better? I have a Dell with 1 120mm and it is near silent. I've also heard that the grates in front of the fans produce noise, but could be gotten rid of with a Dremel. What is this / Where would I obtain one of these? Here's a pic of the back of the case:

thanks!

My computer has gone into meltdown!! Errors in explorer.exe, ntoskrnl.exe, win32k.sys, the whole shebang. Refuses to start up, blue screens all over the place. The only solution I can see is to boot from CD and repair my Windows 2000 installation from the Recovery Console.

However...

My CD-ROM drive, a LTN302, started making these strange noises some months ago. I'd put a CD in and it sounds like... well, it sounds like the CD is hitting the edges of the drive as it spins round. It could be described as a clicking, I'm not sure. It gets faster or slower depending on how fast the CD is spinning.

Anyway, I'm not sure what the problem is but it's not reading the CDs. As far as Windows was concerned the drive exists but I haven't put a CD in. It's like it's been cut off from the system proper.

I ignored the problem as I was going to get a new computer anyway and reading CDs wasn't that vital. But with my current situation it is. Windows refusing to boot makes repairing the CD-ROM slightly more difficult, and there is a bit of data on my hard drive that I really, really don't want to lose.

So: any ideas what the problem is? Can I repair the drive? If I just yank it out and buy a new CD-ROM drive and install that, is it possible to boot from that drive and repair Windows? What are my options? Thanks in advance.

How can you tell if it's the fan or harddrive causing noise? Recently had a new motherboard installed and new fan. The fan is so noisey now that it's quite annoying. At least I'm guessing it's the fan as my harddrive never made noise before. My pc was very quiet before new board and fan. When I put the pc in standby for the night, I notice a significant quieting. Do the fans shutdown in standby? And is there a remedy to this problem? I've no clue as to the type of fan that's in the pc. I've got an AMD K-6. Thanks much for any info.

A:What to do about fan noise?

Hi there,

Unfortunately, more powerfull processors need bigger fans so a noise increase is inevitable.

What may be happening though is that something (cable etc.) may be encroaching into the fan casing and rubbing slightly against it, that would lead to a big increase in noise. Have a look and see if that's what is happening. And yes, during standby fans do shut down I beleive.

One question, have you replaced your CD-ROM lately for a faster one? I have a 50x and it occassionaly sounds as if my PC is trying to take off.

Write back and tell me what you found. If this doesn't work I may have more suggestions.

Thanks,

Peaker.

I just installed a second optical drive in my PC. It seems to be working fine. Since I did this when I open up programs the machine seems to be firing up the burner. The optical drives are empty while this is happening of course. HD uses Sata while CD is using IDE so I'm unsure if that is relative.

Sounds to me like either you've got a cable inside the case somewhere that's brushing against a fan, or a CD in the drive that spinning up. Eject the CD and test.

Failing that, taking the side off your case should allow you to perform a visual and aural inspection which will verify if that's the issue. There should be no problem running your computer with the case side off for a short time (as long as you don't try to touch anything inside the computer whilst it's running); certainly long enough for you to power it up and listen for where the noise is coming from.

When i start my computer first time in the morning, it does not make too much noise. but gradually as i start using my computer with lots of applications it just starts making too much noise which will not go down even if i close some of the applications. Even when i start some game and start playing it just starts making lot of noise.

Even my computer has one more problem. DRAM timing is too tightly reload timing. Sometime on rebooting the machine, or pressing the reset button system does not come back even when noise on my computer says it has started. - Solution for this is only to switch off computer. I have a utility that came with my motherboard that shows the temperature of the system and the CPU. It also has a bunch of fan speed info and allows me to regulate the RPM of the fans.

Anyways, in the past when tried to open that application ( called CoreCenter) my fan noise went away and as soon as the program fully loaded, the fan noise came back. But now, when I open the application and then close it, the load noises that my fans make never comes back.
I am afraid that if the fan noise in not as usual, it does not fully ventilate my system.

Any ideas why?

Sorry if it all sounds confusing, please as me questions if you need me to clear it up.

Well, if your computer doesn't need the fan then it will slow it down. If your computer was getting so hot that it was going to break it will usually shut off. this is programed in the bios level and is hard to get that changed. You didn't provide exact model of the components, but I am sure you are fine. Can you tell what the temperatures are when the fan does not come back on?

It sounds like a single drop falling into a bucket of water. My computer is only 2 months old and this noise has happened the entire time, even after reinstalling OS (due to crash). What's the deal?

A:what is this noise???

ummm, do you have things that happen to turn on / off at the same time this happens (notably off)? Such as your air conditioner, a hallway light, refrigerator, etc?

I just bought a Cable so that all Noise from my computer will transfer to TV and will come out of there. I have connected them both but don't get any Volume of my computer. I have Realtek as my Voume software, please what do I have to do?

A:Why Am I Not Getting Any Noise?

Ok. I am guessing the cable is a 3.5mm headphone jack at one end and 2 (Red & White) RCA cables at the other end.

Have you plugged the 3.5mm side into the green plug in the conputer?

Have you plugged the red and white RCA's into their corresponding sockets in the TV?

Have you turned the TV to the AV channel which corresponds to the sockets?

If you do the above, the sound should come out of your TV.

Hello, I bought an ACER Aspire V3-574G laptop a couple of months ago and I am a bit annoyed by the costant fan noise, even when there is nothing open. I wonder whether it exists a programme to control the fan noise. I also have a Lenovo thinkpad that I use for my job, and even if it's much older I can control its fan noise thanks to a programme (tpfc.62). Should I do something else to fix this problem? Thanks,Fabio

When I first start up my computer, it makes noise, sometimes for an hour or so. The same noise it makes when my anti-virus program is running. I go to the task manager and don't see anything running. My computer is slower during this time too. I've run all my anti-virus and anti-spyware, anti-malware, anti everything I can think of, and it still runs. What is making that noise?

A:What's all that noise?

I have an Everex Explora, AMD Athlon computer and at the start up and when I am searching for info it makes a grinding noise while it is loading the information. Also twice last week after typing and searching for what I wanted I heard a loud grinding noise. Not knowing anything about computers I have no idea what is the problem. Any help would be appreciated.

A:Grinding Noise

Hi lag
Grinding noises aren't good. It sounds like you hard drive is going. I would back up your important data NOW. You can run a scandisk (surface scan) and defrag to help test out the hard drive. Many manufacturers of hard drive also have utilities on their web sites you can run to test out the drive. Is your system under warranty? Many hard drives come with a three year warranty.

Dell I8000 Notebook.
2 HD's

I got a new HD last year and put the old one into a media bay and use it as a second drive for data storage. Just now, it is making a harsh sound when it spun up. It sounds lke there is sand in it and is very "scratchy" when it spins. Is this drive a bust? Never heard anything like this before. I took the case media case apart to look at the drive and when I turned the HD upside down, there sounded like a loose part inside the drive itself.

I am moving all my data files to the primary drive now, in case.
lastly. These Dell media bay cases don't come with the screws to hold them together. I scavenged two out of four from the floppy drive media bay case. Could having only two screws holding the case tgether have caused a problem like this or any other problem?

thanks.
