Due to a problem with BITS I cannot currently download updates using Windows Update. I can download them manually and install them from the Microsoft website. Unfortunately I can only find the required updates but not any of the optional ones. Does anyone know where I can find these? Even if I search for the update number the search comes back empty. Also, if you would like to help with the BITS problem please look at my profile to find the other thread.

A:Can't use windows update - Where can I find optional updates?

Let's fix BITS instead.

Please download the Farbar Service Scanner from

Right-click on the saved file and select 'Run as Administrator', and tick all the options, then click on the Scan button - copy and paste the report to your response.

Hello everyone,

I just came to realize the Windows Update window does not show the usual thirty-something available optional updates (last time I checked it was all the language packs and an ATI driver update), only 1 available important update.

Moreover, if I try to select the updates I want to install, the "Optional" tab is completely missing from that window. I haven't hidden any of those updates, nor are they listed as hidden under the appropriate menu.

Have any of you experienced something like this? What should I try to get them back?

PS: I've attached a screenshot of the situation.

PPS: It's been a month or so since I last checked for updates, so I don't exactly know what might've happened that got those updates disabled.

A:Windows Update optional updates (incl. language packs) disappeared

Click on the "View Update history" in the left panel, you might already have installed them.

Also, have you installed the SP1?

is it a good idea to install the 26 "update for Windows 7" "kbxxxxxxx" updates that sit in the 'optional updates' section of my Windows Update notification bar. are they needed for anything? do they make my computer work better? what are they there for?

A:"Update for Windows 7" (in optional updates section)

Some optional updates are useful and should be installed, some like Bing related items, Silverlight aren't, since you don't mention the KB numbers it's really hard to answer that.

Post a screenshot of them.

1) Does optional windows update KB3135445 contain any software for promoting Windows 10, or is it restricted to just making improvements to Windows Update?

2) I understand that in Windows 10 there are reduced option settings for Windows Update, so please would you also confirm that update KB3135445 will make no changes to the options currently available in the Settings options for Windows Update in
Windows 7.

Please do NOT refer me to the Microsoft More Information bulletin for update KB3135445, as I have already read it, as it does not provide the information / confirmation I am seeking in the questions I have put here.

(By the way, the aggressive adware-style approach by Microsoft to promote Windows 10 as an upgrade, in my opinion, is causing its customers to question the trust they have previously placed in Microsoft updates.)

I look forward to receiving answers to the two (numbered) questions I have put above.

Noticed this month that I suddenly had a lot of important updates to install when I check Windows update. Under important updates I have the likes of:

KB3055999 - Update APN database entry for SaskTel (Canada) in Windows 8.1 and 8
KB3045634 - You cannot make a PPP connection after you reconnect a PLC device in Windows 8.1 or Windows 8

The article for both of these states: Provided as an Optional update for Windows 8.1 and Windows RT 8.1

Wondering why I have these and others listed as Important?

Win 8.1

A:Optional updates listed under important updates

They are "only" important, so they are optional. "Critical" updates are not optional. MS-speak at its finest.

A while back, I had a malware issue where all google links got redirected and the computer didn't connect to any of the major malware protection sites. A very frustrating issue, to be sure, as I suspect you all remember.

I seemed to have been one of the lucky early ones to get it, and there was very little information about it on-line at the time. I finally found instructions that seemed to work: going to Device Manager, finding TDSServ.sys, and selecting disable, then restarting and running anti-malware software.

I didn't notice it at the time, but apparently I'm still not getting automatic windows updates and when I go to or, I get a blank webpage -- whether I enter the site as a url or as an ip address. I've tried updating and running Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, Spybot Search & Destroy (but not TeaTimer), and Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool, but even on full scans, none of them is finding any problems. I looked in the hosts file and didn't see any redirects for those URLs (though there are a lot of entries that I presume came from Spybot immunization). I also checked Device Manager now -- there's no TDSServ.sys.

I'm on a laptop running Windows XP Home Edition 2002, with Service Pack 2, connecting to the internet wirelessly, running Zone Alarm but no Antivirus software.

Thanks in advance for any help you might be able to provide.

Had to do another reinstall of W7. Are any of these optional updates needed ?

A:Optional Updates

Define 'needed'!
The OS will run happily and securely without them - but they do contain some nice enhancements.
I'd install everything offered except the Bing and Live stuff (unless you actually want those) - and hide those so that they don't get in the way (at least until they are updated again)

I'm not familiar with doing driver updates. I have 3 optionals from Windows Update. I've read both pros & cons to using Windows Update for drivers but it's been awhile, so what's the current consensus now that I'm running Windows 7? Is it 'good to go' or is it best to go to the product sites?

A:Optional Updates

Others may disagree but I believe the first place to check for updated drivers is at the computer manufacturer's website. (If it's a home built machine then check the individual manufacturer websites for motherboard, graphics card, etc.) I also think most people would say "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."

A few months ago Windows Updates said there was a new driver available for my Sony Vaio's Intel HD 3000 graphics. I went to the Intel site to verify. It was there so I installed it. Almost immediately I began getting blue screens. I went back to the older version and all was well. I emailed Intel and they said once they release a driver, each computer manufacturer or component manufacturer is free to optimize the driver for their particular needs. Sony hadn't optimized it and it wasn't compatible with my Vaio.

If you decide to install those drivers I'd recommend you make a restore point just in case something doesn't work. Better yet, a system image. Go to the Acer website to verify the version being offered as an optionl update is the latest and greatest for your computer. Same thing with nVidia.

I am not experiencing any of the said problems so I am wondering if I still need to install the updates. Thanks

I had two of those, KB3042085 and 2976978. One seems to be yet another pre W10 update. Installed them OK.

Optional means just that: optional. It won't hurt to not install them. I hide anything to do with Bing and, if I were to unhide them, there would be many more times nine setting there.

There are 2 "optional" update to look closely at.

I think that Microshaft is up to it's old 'snooping' tricks again.  I'd advise not to install them.  Any thoughts from you gurus?

A:New (optional) updates on 8/21/15

Hi RVAH-12 I personally would install them because I see no harm in doing so. As long as they aren't drivers update, there's no real chance that they'll mess up your system. If you are one of these users that cares about privacy (in a certain way), you might just want to leave the second update out, but for the first one, it can be useful in the future (the kind of data it'll collect can be valuable to enhance Windows' protection).

I am new to the world of Windows, and am helping a friend out with his pc.  I got it all setup and malware clean, but don't know for sure what Optional Updates I should install.  Can anyone advise me as at least what NOT to install?  This is what I got.  I should mention, that I just re-installed his OS via. the Recovery Partition, so all is new and probably out of date.  All M.S. Updates have been done.  I use a Logitec Mouse so I think I want that, and, they are very common.  The others I am not sure about.

A:34 optional updates available

Nobody forces you to install any updates. It is up to you what you want to install. I sometimes "hide" updates because I do not use the program to which they pertain. In Vista I have hidden all of SP2 on one system because it gave me problems on another system and it is smooth sailing since then. So as I said, it's up to you.

How can I delete some duplicate updates in the windows (view update history) page. I don't see where I can click and delete any of the updates.

A:How can I delete some dulicate updates in the windows (view update history) page?

There is no way you can delete update history (Selected) entries.

If you want to clear the windows update history, Navigate to "C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore" Delete "DataStore.edb".

Before you delete "DataStore.edb" you should stop Windows update service and BITS service.

Try the following in command prompt:
net stop wuauserv
net stop bits

To start services after deleting "DataStore.edb", try the following:
net start wuauserv
net start bits
or just restart the computer once.

Hope it helps

OK, you can un-tick the box and don't install the update but when you reboot the reminder to update pops back up again and the box is ticked asking you to do the same update that you don't need - most annoying !!!

Why am i getting so many optional updates offered for Win 8.1 ?
Last month i had 22 optional updates offered, now i have 34.
Is anyone else seeing this, or is it something with my 8.1 install ?

I keep my systems updated, and now research optionals to decide if i want them because of Win 10 optionals i don't want.
I never had this issue before last month, and i'm not seeing this many optionals offered in Win 7 (or Win 10).
It's not causing me any problems, it's just weird, imho.

Win 8.1 and Win 10 check for updates and install them "quickly", so i don't have an issue with Win Updates being slow.

I see a lot of optionals published on 4/19/2016.
I'll post screen prints if that will help.

I have Win 7 SP 1 64 bit installed on a Dell Latitude E6520 computer with i5 processor, 8 GB RAM.

I normally ignore the Windows Optional updates in the Windows Update feature.

However, a number of these have accumulated in the optional updates window when I connect to Windows Update.

I have methodically examined all of them, using the "More information" link. Some of them (odd currency compatibilities) I can easily reject. Others I have no clue.

But there are a number of .NET Framework updates listed, including the 4.5.2 version, plus several others that are described as stability/reliability/performance upgrades for earlier versions (and the .NET updates are very large files).

Should I install the earlier version updates before I install 4.5.2, or do I really need to install any of those updates?

What is the general opinion on installing optional updates? Yes, I understand the meaning of "optional." But I am interested in what experienced Windows users have to say about this issue.

I tried searching the internet, but there seems to be only polarized answers (absolutely yes or absolutely no).

A:Remove Optional Updates?

Hi microdude431,

To do this, you need to hide the unwanted updates. Open 'Windows Updates' and select 'View available updates'. The following screen appears.

Right click the unwanted update and select 'Hide update'. You will need to provide administrative credentials to continue. Repeat for each update that you do not wish to see. Unfortunately, I don't know of any way to do this other than individually selecting each update in turn.

On April 21, I had 20 Optional Windows updates, which I hid. Yesterday, there were 4 Optional Windows updates for download, then again today there are 4 Optional Updates for download. Anyone have any ideas about what is going on? Is this preparation for Windows 10? Microsoft trying to fix problems in 8.1? A new method to confuse users?

I try to read each one and be intelligent in my selections, but am not really sure that my interpretation is always in my best interests. One that really interested me today is KB3021910 which has some relation to DISM and source files if I read it right -
"( Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) commands fail with a "0x800f0906" error if a Features on Demand command runs during a download process)".

It's all really confusing to me - God only knows what it's doing to some of my friends who are less technical than I!

On 21 April Microsoft released 20+ "Optional" updates.

Any opinions from Forum Members as to which of these updates is worthwhile installing...?

A:April Optional Updates

the key word is optional
nobody can say what is wanted or needed on your particular computer
the only thing to do is look at each update in turn and follow the more information link & see what it does
if you don't have the software or hardware installed that the update applies to then hide that update and don't install it
If you feel the update might apply to you then update it
of the 20 odd optional updates this month, I applied about 8
I made sure to ignore & hide the Russian rouble update and Korean language updates which definitely don't apply to me and the update to allow backup to a recordable blueray disc because I don't have a BR player or recorder on the computer

I have a Toshiba pc and it updates automatically. Recently I looked at it from control panel and there are 5 optional updates not installed so i went and listed all of them but there is no continuation? How do I install the optional updates? I did check the "recommended..." in the update portion regarding how you want Windows to update?

I was reviewing my Windows update history and found a lot of updates listed as "optional". This is strange because eveytime I receive the prompt that new updates are available, I only install the ones marked "important". When I click on my list of installed updates (where you can delete them) the list looks completely different amd they are not listed as important, recommended, or optional here. Is there a way to remove thes optional updates to free up hard drive space or is it a waste of time? Are these updates taking up enough space to make it worth the while to jump through all the necessary hoops to uninstall them?

A:Uninstalling Optional Updates

Hello Fred,

What are the optional updates for?

Some of these are recommended to install as well. For example, definition updates for MSE or Windows Defender.

The following optional updates were encountered this morning waiting to be downloaded and installed. I went ahead and installed the one's I thought applied to my configuration.

Any thoughts?

KB3083800 (installed)
KB7099834 (installed)
KB3100919 (installed)
KB3100956 (no installed)
KB3101183 (installed)
KB3102429 (not installed)
KB3103696 (not installed)

A:New Windows Optional Updates

Installed them all, as most seemed helpful and the others innocuous. Mind you, the only issue was that when Windows was restarting and in the shutting down phase, the busy round dots moved onto the far left of the screen, when they're usually central. Starting up, the dots and all were in their normal place and everything seemed fine. Probably some minor blip. I have backups if things don't go well, so not worrying.

A:Should I install any of these optional updates?

You know what they say about opinions, don't you? Opinions are like a certain body part. Everybody's got one and sometimes they stink.

A lot of folks on this Forum recommend installing all updates starting with the critical, then the important, recommended, and finally the optionals. Because in theory the updates are supposed to keep a computer safer, running smoother, etc. But as many people have discovered, even a critical update that doesn't install correctly can cause a lot of grief.

So here's my opinion FWIW. Go ahead and install the updates. But ... (1) make sure you have at least a restore point created before hand, or better yet a system image just in case something goes wrong and you need to roll back your machine; and (2) don't try to install them all at once. Keep track of the KB numbers, install maybe 4 - 5 at a time, and reboot after each group is installed. If a problem should occur you'll know which group caused the issue. Uninstall the entire group then install just one update at a time. Reboot after each individual install. If the problem reappears you'll know exactly which update is the offender. Ignore that update and continue with the rest. Yes, it's a lot slower process but I think it offers the best chance for a successful install.

- Try to find out what the update is about on the Microsoft website. Each update has a separate webpage.
E.g. info about update KB 2830477 is found at https:
Or try to GOOGLE it.
- If you don't want to upgrade to Win 10 (yet) the don't install KB 3035583 & KB 3123862.
- But one update you must install is KB 2852386. It allows you to reduce the size of the infamous "C:\Windows\winsxs" folder with the "Disk Clean Up" tool. A word of WARNING: If you have reduced the size of the "Winsxs" folder with that tool you won't be able to remove (previous) updates.

You can open the Windows Update in the Control and under Important updates you can use the option to Download updates but let me choose whether to install them or not.
This will give you the opportunity to check out the updates and decide which ones you wish to install.  When you view the updates there will be a check box in front of each update, you can place a check for each update you wish to install.

I got 9 optional updates; I believe one of them mentioned something w.r.t. Windows 10 (like compatibility or something(*)). I didn't find any of the updates controversial (like, say, "added telemetry points") so installed them all.

Whenever these come across I'm irritated that uSoft says the equivalent of "Here's an optional update" as the TOTAL explanation, requiring personally tracking down the Knowledge Base articles about each one. But it's pretty easy to Google Search for the KBNNNNNNN string so not a total problem.

I've attempted to research the methods, to no avail, although I've concluded that it is probably possible through RegEdit, or through GPEdit, although I'm not sure how to find the specific settings, if they're available.

Hi. Perhaps I'm just being special, but how do you see what updates are recommended and optional for Windows 10? My antivirus (Nod32) tells me when system updates are available if they aren't installed by the system automatically in a timely manor and it gives me the option to look at what updates it's talking about. It shows several critical updates available, several recommended updates and one optional update. However when I run check for updates from the settings app thing, only the critical updates are showing up and are automatically downloaded and installed as expected.

I know the recommended/optional updates aren't being installed in the background because whenever new updates become available my antivirus detects them, tells me and when I look at the list the same recommended updates still show up (I've checked this three times now). I have windows 10 Home incidentally so not sure if that makes any difference.

Basically, it would appear I have at least a couple of recommended updates that I could benefit from installing but I cannot figure out how to actually get them to show up when I check for updates and have them installed. Thanks!

I've noticed that when I put an "Optional" update (Win 7) into the Hidden "folder," it is then marked "Recommended." If I "restore" a Hidden Recommended update, it then changes to "Optional" when it is restored.
Does anyone know what I am trying to explain? A file says Optional when I look in the (Critical) Updates page and when I put it in the Hidden folder, it (the category) changes to Recommended.

Can anyone help solve this problem please?

A:Optional or Recommended (Critical) Updates

Hello Alice and welcome to Seven Forums. Here's more information about Windows Updates than you probably wanted to know.

Updates are classified as Important, Recommended, Optional, and Featured. Here's what they mean: Important updates offer significant benefits, such as improved security, privacy, and reliability. They should be installed as they become available, and can be installed automatically with Windows Update.
Recommended updates address non-critical problems or help enhance your computing experience. While these updates do not address fundamental issues with your computer or Windows software, they can offer meaningful improvements. These can be installed automatically.
Optional updates can include updates, drivers, or new software from Microsoft to enhance your computing experience. You can only install these manually.
Depending on the type of update, Windows Update can deliver the following: Security updates. A broadly released fix for a product-specific security-related vulnerability. Security vulnerabilities are rated based on their severity, which is indicated in the Microsoft security bulletin as critical, important, moderate, or low.
Critical updates. A broadly released fix for a specific problem addressing a critical, non-security related bug.
Service Packs. A tested, cumulative set of hotfixes, security updates, critical updates, and updates, as well as additional fixes for problems found internally since the release of the product. Service Packs might ... Read more

Hi people, I'm on a ASUS G759JW and recently had to run a DISM source restorehealth using the files provided by topgundcp on this thread. Worked like a charm, DISM came up squeaky clean. Did not have access to local group policy editor as I'm running basic 8.1 and files provided by Microsoft online didn't contain ISO.

Afterwards I was trying to resolve some strangeness in event viewer assuming a lot of it was being caused by incompatible drivers. Downloaded some programs from Windows Assessment Toolkit to scan for issues. Drivers came up fine besides having a TON of unnecessary oem's (however I'm still trying to find some clear instructions on how to remove these drivers using DISM without spending a huge amount of time. I wasted over a week trying to fix the previously mentioned issue and can no longer afford to be blindly jacking about with it.). Still getting a lot of messages in event viewer but far fewer critical and warning entries than I was before restorehealth (pointing device is driving me nuts). I've been checking event viewer mainly to figure out why my dvd player is being initialized randomly as if on startup or upon opening itunes. Icon is a document, believe it's a paired SSD with DVD.

I checked this one only, Event 55 when you copy an encrypted folder to EFS shared folder in Windows so if one is using EFS and the other not, it could be optional on the one that does not use EFS.

Nothing is wrong with either one, it depends on the software you have and how it's used that makes the updates Optional, Important or Critical.

Hi All..

I was reviewing my windows updates and saw two optional updates that were pending. First one was for MS office and it went through fine. Second one was some update to AMD vision control center. During that update screen flashed couple of times and went for re-start. After that I am unable to get into the system. I tried safe mode/debugging/low resolution mode etc.. But all resulted in the same blue screen with the 0xc000021a error message.

I am able to go only to command prompt. Nothing else (fortunately I am able to backup my photos by connecting external hard drive and using command prompt). I checked the SRT log file but it doesn't say any issue. All passed.

I tried refresh PC but it came back and said "There was a problem refreshing your PC. No changes made".

I tried using win ISO image bootable flash drive. It couldn't get through me in (I just tried with PC repair option when I booted with ISO image).

Is there a way I can get over it without re-installing?

Thanks in advance...

STEP 1: Enter cmd
STEP 2: Now in the Command prompt just type System Root\System32\Drwtsn32.exe -I?. This process will register the Dr.Watson as the default system debugger which has to be -> Press Enter.
STEP 3: Again type System Root\System32\Drwtsn32.exe and then in the window choose the option which are Append to existing log file, Create crash dump and Visual Notification.
STEP 4: After setting it up restart the computer by pressing F8 in the startup and select Last known good configuration.
STEP 5: Once it got booted up, again restart the system in the normal and now try to look at your optional updates to make sure not to install whatever may have broken it before.

If this does not work then you may have to reinstall.

I've been facing this issue lately on this new OS.
Previously on W7 & W8 the updates categorized into 2 column (Important & Optional) where we can select the updates individually and download/install. This way I can get some optional drivers for memory card, printers & etc.

I couldn't find this option in W10. I choose to ignore it but my antivirus keep notifying me that optional downloads are available. I did click the "Run System Updates" but it navigates to System > Update & Security > Message and shows "System is up to date".

Sometimes it only updates the critical updates. The rest (Recommended & Optional) ignored/not notified on windows updates.
Anyone facing this issue? Able to solve? Please help.

A:Windows 10 Optional Updates not downloading/showing

Having this same concern. I too am using ESET Smart Sec. I just wish the Windows update was the same back then in windows 7 where you can see recommended/optional updates for drivers.

do i have to install this update?

A:optional update

Hello SpeedDial,

No, you do not have to. It's just to let you know that there is a new optional driver version update. If you do not want to install it, then you can hide it to not see it anymore in Windows Update. However, you might give it a try since it is a new version that may help improve your graphic card's performance. If not, you can always rollback to the previous driver version.

Hope this helps,

I have a
Gateway One All-In-One Desktop with IntelŪ PentiumŪ Processor - Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Edition 64-bit operating system preinstalled.Optional update:
I recently went to the Critical Updates and saw the following:

"Intel Corp - Display Mobile Intel (R) 4 series expires chipset family" - 21 MB (which is quite a large update)

Just what is this update and should I install it? This is our grandson's computer and we would not want to cause any problems or damage by installing this Optional Update. Nothing appears to be wrong with our graphics, etc.
Please advise and thank you.

Advanced micro devices,inc-Graphics adapter wddm1.2-amd Radeon HD 6310 Graphics is this update important? I found it on my update list so I was just wondering if its okay to update also, what does this update do?

A:Optional Update

It is clearly an 'update' for the device driver for your graphics adapter, but I do not know what in particular that update fixes or improves about it.
Device drivers are small pieces of software that are the link between Windows and the various pieces of hardware on the computer. If Windows or wants to draw something on the screen, it gets the device driver for your graphics adapter to do it.. Device drivers are specific to the exact model of hardware that they are designed for, and sometimes to that hardware being used on a particular model of computer.
I am a bit wary about accepting device driver updates from Microsoft updates, but do not ignore them. In particular, I would think carefully about this one, and ensure that the update matches the driver already installed on your system. My reasoning being that device drivers can be issued through four different channels (each subtly different).
The Manufacturer of your computer. If you have let's say a "Bloggs model X1000" laptop - The most appropriate driver updates might well come from "Bloggs" themselves... They will know how best to use that model of graphics adapter in their system, and might have modified the drivers (or include specific support software) that they supply to best match their system.
The Manufacturer of a separate add-in card that you separately purchased for your computer. The card manufacturer will know how best to use that model of graphics adapter in their system, and mig... Read more

There have been a lot of problems reported the last few months where Windows Update is very slow and takes a long time.
I just checked my W7 Updates and a new update KB3102810 was published yesterday (2015-11-03)
This update might help fix this, but it also includes a fix for updating to Win 10.

Read more here:

I also get the "same update" offered for W8.1 as KB3102812 described here:

A:New optional update

I promptly hid KB3102810 and another optional one when they came through recently; I still have two important ones from yesterday pending (KB2758857 and KB3067904); I'm waiting to see if anyone reports problems or not. I haven't had any trouble with windows updates taking too long to do its thing and I don't need a fix for updating to Win 10 because that simply isn't going to happen. In fact, I suspect the ones who have been having trouble with updates also have the Win 10 nagware, etc. installed, which I do not.

My computer automatically updated today. Upon going through the list of updates there where two optional updates one for English and the other for CXT-Network-PCI soft data fax modem with smart CP. What are they? Do I really need them? I checked the Microsoft help thing when your right click for info. All I could get was it was a driver and nothing else.

A:optional update

You must have this kind of card on your system using Windows drivers, then when there is a new driver WU propose it to make an upgrade.
My personnal advise regarding WU setup is to look for updates letting you the choice to download and install them.

I opened Windows Update and only listed was an optional update. I didn't update at that time and when I went back to update I could not find the optional update. Ihave Windows 7 Home premium 64 Bit. I looked for updates again but it said everything was up to date. How can I find that update.. I'm not really good with computers any help will be greatly appreciated. I have one other question if you don't mind.

I have to Unzip a ZIP-file with WinZip and save the content to my hard
drive. Then use the unzipped EXE-file to run a program. This sound simple enough, I guess, if you know what you are doing. Where can I get this WinZip program that will run on Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit.

One other question. A program that I want to install supports Windows 7 64 bit in 32-bit emulation mode. What does that mean and how do I run this program.

Thanks again for all your help and cooperation. Have a good evening.

A:Optional Update

Welcome rottikid,

For the update it was probably for MSE if that's your Anti-Virus, You could just look at Installed updates and see if it is there.

As for WinZip you can get it here WinZip - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET There might be something else you can use too, someone else might know more about that.

Usually people will download a zipped file to their desktop or downloads area by clicking save instead of run when prompted. (see Below)

And for the 32 bit emulation I don't know the technical answer but 64 bit windows has 2 sets of programs files, Program Files (64bit) and Program Filesx86 (32bit).

Hope that helps you out some.

Does one need optional updates? The reason I ask is until recently i've had no problems with any update. This one just refuses to install Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller.(Error code 800F0203)Went through all the chanels, still no install.

Jetsguy: Just a word of caution.... It may be best to not load optional updates from Microsoft for hardware or software not related to Microsofts products. To update those non-related programs or hardware go directly to the manufacturers website and get updates there.

Received the following update from M$ today, not sure what it is wanting to do -

"nVidia - Graphics Adapter WDDM1.1, Graphics Adapter WDDM1.2, Graphics Adapter WDDM1.3, Other hardware - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260

Download size: 252.2 MB

You may need to restart your computer for this update to take effect.

Update type: Optional

nVidia Graphics Adapter WDDM1.1, Graphics Adapter WDDM1.2, Graphics Adapter WDDM1.3, Other hardware software update released in February, 2015"

Could someone shed some light on this ?

A:Optional Update - not sure what it is ?

This is an update to your NVidia graphics card drivers, etc. It is optional because it is not necessarily required.

I personally always go to the manufacturer's (NVidia in this case) support site and get the latest drivers from there if I feel I need to update them.

After viewing some great tech support on your forum today that looked like a similar problems I am having, I decided to join the site in hopes of getting the same help.

I can not locate optional updates downloaded from Windows Update site and "confirmed" as successfully installed. I checked on View installed updates in the Program and Features caption in the Control Panel. The updates that are there are those categorized as Critical, High Priority or Important. The rest of those categorized as Optional are nowhere to be found, though confirmed as successfully installed in the View Update History in the Windows Update site. Can anyone please help.
