HP C3180 scanner - scanned file location

Q: HP C3180 scanner - scanned file location

My father is running an HP C3180 PhotoSmart All-in-One on Windows XP (not SP2, I think). When he does a scan, it is visible in the Photosmart Express application, but nowhere else.

Does anyone know where files resulting from a scan by a C3180 on XP are stored? Or as what type of file? I can see a thumbnail of the images in PhotoSmart Express (misnamed in every respect), but I can't find the files themselves.

Sorry this is so vague, but I can't tell which HP application is actually running the scanner, or anything like that - and the documentation/support is hopeless.

A: HP C3180 scanner - scanned file location

Try looking thru the properties or options in the Photosmart program there should be an option that tells you not only where the downloads aree but the same place will allow you to change the download destination directory.

Hi, I'm pretty new here, am definitely NOT a pro with computers (I can understand basics)
and am having troubles with my scanner.
My operating system is Windows XP.
My scanner is an all in one (photocopier, scanner, printer) Epson stylus PHOTO RX510.
It did come with a driver but no instructions-I got it off Ebay (yes I know it's not always that reliable). Anyways, the problem is that I can't seem to find the files that have been scanned.
When I look at the little screen on the printer it says "scanning" after I've pressed the scan button and the lights flash but I can't seem to find the files anywhere.
Any ideas where they disapear to?
Help would be much appreciated.

After scanning a few documents, I get white rectangular spaces in the middle of the scanned images.

It looks as if there is a piece of paper or something that blocks parts of the document from being scanned, but the weird part is that there isn't anything physically obstructing the glass on the inside, nor the rubber rollers as I've cleaned them both multiple times.

The document scan looks just okay after letting it cool down, but each scan after that gets progressively worse unless I wait it out for a few minutes. I'm thinking that it may be the light bulb (I've tried adjusting the AutoBrightness settings) but then again I'm not very adept with the mechanics behind scanners & imaging.

Currently I use Microsoft Security essentials as my "active monitoring" - What i'm looking for is any virus scanners that you find work well? (I only like "free" scanners.)

Consider I'm not seeking an active "monitor" that runs as a windows process. What I'm looking for is a "file scanner" that scans designated folders/drives.

Now adays, if you're paying attention, the quantity of spyware/Trojans/active x viruses is at an all time high. It seems like I get infected going to common websites even. I am looking to expand my assemblage of file scanners. In my opinion, the more, the better. (Sometimes I like to scan my drives with 3+ virus scanners. I'd like even more.)

I currently use:

Malwarebytes - Sweet secondary scanner. Doesn't run as a process (is just a scanner) and isn't "active monitoring" Perfect!

Can you guys reccommend any additional file scanners that scan windows drives/files? Please remember, I don't want it to actively manage/monitor! (I USE MSE FOR THIS) I want it to be a secondary scanner that scans u... Read more

I have a Dell 968 All In One Printer. I need to scan some hard copy documents to a file so that I can send them via email. But the PDF files created are huge... A 3 page pdf is over 6MB! To send the info and get around my email attachment limit, I've had to break down the pages into multiple docs and send through a series of emails.... Very frustrating!

I've uninstalled and reinstalled the Dell All-In-One Center software on the computer. And, I've reset the scan parameters on the printer to 150 DPI / black and white before scanning... Doesn't help resolve the issue.

I've received many PDFs that are 40 or 50 pages in length... And they are smaller than what I'm producing. The PDFs look normal when I review them onscreen....Any idea what may be causing the large file size and what I can do to produce a smaller PDF file when scanning? I have Adobe Reader 9.4.2.

I was recently asked to enlarge some print of some poems that are very hard to read (tiny print and on colored paper)...I scanned them onto my machine - chose "Select All" - tried to use the "Text" tool to increase the size from 12pi to 24pi - I saved the file - reopened the saved file and the font size is still prints out as small as the original.

Not much experience in this field and am looking for some on how to do this....thanks.

A:Gimp Q about enlarging text on a scanned file...

A regular scan is just a photo of the text. You can’t edit it.

Your scanner probably came with OCR software that converts a scan to text. The normal process would be to scan the text with the OCR and open it in Word. Edit it to make sure there aren’t any errors – you often get errors with small print on a colored background unless you use the advanced driver on the scanner and clean it up.

Once you get the text the way you want it, copy it to the clipboard. Make a background you like in Gimp and paste the text with the text tool in using any font and size you want.

In Windows 8.1 (and as far as I can remember in all previous Windows versions) I used to be able to do the following:
In Windows Explorer: Open a .jpg file from anywhere in my file system, by right mouse clicking and choosing "edit"After editing: "Save as" (press F12) and save the edited file IN ITS ORIGINAL LOCATION but under a different name.
Now, in Windows 10, the situation is different:
In Windows Explorer I open a .jpg file from anywhere in my file system by right mouse clicking and choosing "edit"After editing: "Save as" (F12) opens a dialogue box that suggests I save the file, NOT in its original location, but in a location that is either the default "pictures" directory or the directory that was previously used as a "save as" location in Paint (these locations are stored in the registry key "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Applets\Paint\Recent File List")

Now I'd like very much to get the old, Windows 8 type situation back because this does not work for me! It's very inconvenient to have to scroll and click my way through the "save as" dialogue box until I finally find the directory where the edited file was stored in the first place! Why o why does Windows not remember this location?

A:MS Paint "Save as" location is NOT the file source location

Hello hvaleton Welcome to the Ten Forums!

I just right clicked on an image file here and chose the Edit option and the "save as" to save the jpeg file with the word "duplicate" added into the file name to save it in the original location. You may want to try starting with the Paint app first you find in the Start>AllApps>Windows Accessories list and then simply choose the open option in the file menu to browse to and select the intended file. You can also see that pinned to the Start menu as well as to the main taskbar with a fast right click.

If your copy of 10 was an upgrade install that might explain the problem you are seeing since the upgrade install tends to not see everything go on fully at times. The word "Buggy" tends to fit the bill for that type of install and not specific to 10 only but every version coming up from Legacy to 9x onto ME, 2000, XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, and now 10.

The one thing favored with having the Windows Photo Viewer restored replaced by Photos in 10 is that once you have any image or photo in view you can simply to upto the menu and select the "Make a copy" option and browse to the location you want the new copy to be created and saved to on the spot.

You just can't alter things like you can with MS Paint or the favorite for many 3rd party free image editing program known as PaintNet. Besides painting over and erasing things if not drawing lines under and around objects in an image you can add ne... Read more

I am sorry if this is not the board to post this to.

A friend of mine has an HP Photosmart C3180 all-in-one printer. It's been hooked it upto a Win XP computer, and most everything works great.

There is an MS Excel 2007 document that when we try to print to this printer, the printer always prints it as A4 portrait. I've gone in and set the paper details for the doc to letter landscape, I've set the defaults for the printer's "fast/economical printing" option to letter paper. And yet, when we print, it changes back to A4 portrait. We've setup this printer on different computers to make sure that it wasn't a setting, and when I print the doc, it does the same thing. It usually shows under the preview ok, but then when printed, it changes.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

hello,i've got a file that i suspect. it is an exe (for example's sake, let's say somefile.exe). when i run kaperksy to 'scan this file' it skips it! kapersky's status of the scan tells me that it skipped the file and the reason was 'by rights'i have no idea what that means, and their website/help is not giving me any further, i changed the name of the file to somefile.exe.txt, and rescanned. it seemed to understand that the file had packed componants, and unpacked successfully and scanned the innards of the file just fine. it didn't find any threats.however, what bothers me is that the second i rename the file back to a somefile.exe... i can no longer scan it! what is going on?i can scan other exe files just fine. in fact, when i try to upload that one particular exe file, kapersky's online file scanner acts all goofy as if i hadn't submitted a file at all. i've submitted other files to their online file scanner and processed them just fine, so it's definitely related to just this one.anyone have any ideas what might be happening?thanks

I am going to scan several thousand documents for a non-profit organization. It's a long-term project since I'll be using a portable flatbed scanner (no multiple page feed) for many of the scans. (More than half of the documents I will be able to transport to a location that has a scanner with sheet-feed capability.)
The docs consist of the minutes of meetings going back about 150 years. Meetings were held twice monthly, and the minutes of each meeting consist typically of 2 or 3 pages (single sheets of paper).
I plan on downloading these to a laptop as PDF files; one file for each meeting. Then, I plan on uploading and converting each file to Google Docs, which gives me the ability to use the Google OCR software while still, hopefully, retaining this file structure. (I want to give the members the capability of searching the minutes for words, or by date, etc. Files prior to about 1930 were handwritten and therefore won't be run through the OCR process)
However, I think that if I did it that way and stopped there, the member would have to search each individual file for the word or phrase they are looking for. This would not be practical (there were over 2000 meetings whose minutes were typed). So I guess what I'd want to do is to somehow, in addition to the individual files which were for each meeting, create a "mega file" consisting of all 3900+ sets of minutes.
Is there some way to aggregate all of those files into one big file?
Or, does so... Read more

So today I was running a quick scan with my anti-virus/malware software (Bt Netprotect + in association with McAfee) and happened to glance at the screen to see this:

The file being scanned was labelled Rootkit
The quick scan was 99% complete
0 issues had been detected
0 issues has been fixed
My computer was secure, no action required. (according to the software)

The scan was taking quite a while over this mystery rootkit file, leading me to become obviously concerned.

FYI, no viral symptoms have been noticed in the hour or two after I first noticed this file in the scan. I've checked running processes, installed programs, run Ccleaner and multiple custom and complete virus scans using McAfee. I also searched the registry using regedit for any instances of 'bootrecord', although I didn't really know what the 3 returned items meant because I don't know what I'm doing in the registry - which is why i quit regedit and left it alone after that!

Nothing so far suggests I have an infection except the name, the file scan length and one other thing...

McAfee returns a result in its system scans which has led to much confusion in the past. I intend to also post this on to the McAfee community to try and determine exactly what they mean by it, but so far I'll just tell you what I know.

Scanning a physical document for digital storage requires scanning of the document, which is considerably quicker if two sides are scanned together.

Is there some freeware program (if possible running on Windows) to deskew and separate the two pages automatically for the whole created file (pdf, djvu, tiff...), creating an ordered document with a single scanned page per page (or at least a file with the odd pages and a file with the even pages). It is somehow more complicated than using a script of Autohotkey, since not all scanned pages are exactly located at the same position, and therefore the parameters of a page to be splitted do not necessarily apply to all other pages.

Thanks in advance for the information.

I'm having a problem with a very long (125+ page) and extremely crucial Office 2007 Word document. Two strange things have started happening: First, when I try to close the file I get an error message that says: “Cannot close file. File is open in another location” (which, of course, it isn’t). In order to close the file, I have to do a “Save-as” and rename the file. However, when I open the newly created file, it only opens up as a "read-only" document which can't be saved or edited. To make matters worse, when I close the new file and reopen it, the new file becomes read-only as well. And on and on ad infinitum with every new file created from the original file!!!

When I check Properties for both the old and new files, “Read-Only” is not checked, so I'm really stumped. I've tried every method I know to correct both the File Open in Another Location and the Read-Only problems. I tried going to Task Manager to see if either the original file or the new file was actually running in another program, which they were not. I went into Event Viewer to see if there was any error in Microsoft Office, and I couldn’t find one (although, I’m not really sure how to find this exact kind of error). I tried to reopen both files from Windows Explorer, which didn’t help. I tried shutting down and rebooting which didn’t help. I even tried copying the contents of the new file and creating a newer file with a different... Read more

It would be an interesting experiment to save the file as an RTF (Rich Text File), rename it, and then open it for editing in Word and see if the same problems happen.

The reason it would be interesting is, when you save Office files as Office files, they're written with Visual Basic code. VBA code is used in lots of applications and it affects "system" features like your ability to edit and save.

So, save the doc as a "Save As..." and in the white box at the bottom, click it, and a list will show up with the various other formats you can save as. RTF does not contain Visual Basic or VBA code.

RTF keeps formatting information, though special indents and numbering systems may look a little funny afterward.

I am new to batch files and have read up a little on xcopy and robocopy.
We currently have a folder which new builds are copied and compressed to .zip files and stuck in a  folder. Dozens of zip files are created every day
What I want to do is the following:

I want to copy the newest zip file from folder 1 to folder 2 and extract it.

What is the simplest way to find and copy the newest zip file considering multiple zip files are created each day?

A:using a batch file i would like to copy the newest file to a new location.

Good Evening Gentlemen.

I have an issue running a program that is contained in a self extracting zip that is supposed to run automatically.

The SFX files unzips the contents to a folder on my hard disk (no problem), but then tries to run another program (installer.exe) that is located in the extracted folder.

The program fromm inside the SFX runs fine if I set the compatibility to XP manually, but the problem is that the the SFX extracts the files to a different location each time it is run.

Is there a global way to make a program (installer.exe) run in compatibility mode wherever it exists?

Thank you very much in advance for any tips.

A:Set Compatibility on exe file regardless of file location

After extracting the SFX, try running installer.exe from a CMD-file as follows:

start installer.exe

If it works, repackage the SFX. Add the CMD-file on the same level with installer.exe and call CMD from SFX instead of the original installer.

So I had a weird thing just happen yesterday. According to my logs I have not installed any Microsoft updates in the past 2 days, nor had to update any programs on my systems. I have a several Windows 7 machines and this is happening on only two of them. (Also on my Windows 8.1 and Windows 10)

I am trying to install some programs (i.e. Disk Defrag and Backup). I get the message in the pic. But in every area I go to the file shows that it is there. I tried downloading directly from the website, got on another machine and put it on a thumb, got it on another machine and put it on the network drive and every time it says the same thing. But on my other Win7 machines it works fine so it cannot be the actual file itself

So not sure why just now. This just started yesterday. I have rebooted my entire network (i.e. router, modem, all computers, cells. etc.) and same issue. I have checked the properties and all looks fine. I had an older version and compared the settings (properties) and they are the same. Security are the same.

Weird part is I can install the old version just fine, but the newer one (which does work on other Win7 machines) still does not install. I compared permissions and they are the same. So really racking my brain on this and why exactly now? Why older one works and newer does not? Why does it says it cannot access the path when it is there?

Just weird

A:File not at location?

OK, tried one more thing and it worked. Disabled my antivirus and now it installs. Strange still the A/V is the same across all systems so again, why some and not on others. But at least I know what to turn off. FYI

Good morning / Good afternoon
As a newbie I am making the first posting on your forum and I hope it is not a silly question.

I received a hard print of an excel spreadsheet with data in 9 columns (2 date formatted and 6 number formatted) of figures from my by bank and I wish 2 use them for further calculation. As I didn't get an electronic file from the bank I scanned the data sheet on the HP Scanner into text files ( rich text, plain text etc) and attempted to import the text into Excel; but I was unsuccessful. Have I attempted the impossible or did I do something wrong ?

If it is possible to do so how should I proceed ?

How to Move the Temporary Files Location for Windows XP CD Recording (Q308572)

The information in this article applies to:
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Microsoft Windows XP Professional
This article describes how to move the CD Recording temporary files storage to an alternate drive for a single user on a Windows XP-based computer.

When you copy files to a CD-R or CD-RW disk by using the CD recording support that is built into Windows XP, the files are first copied to a temporary location, and then a disk image file is created. Because of this, you must have available space on your Windows drive that equals two times the size of the files you are copying.

Although you can move the location of the temporary image on the properties of the CD-R/RW drive, this method does not move the temporary files.

For additional information about moving the disk image file, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Since you are creating the folders, I think they assume you put them were you like. The ones with the location tabs are system created and they offer this feature so you can change the default location.

Hi All

I have attempted to place my page file to an external disk via USB > I:, on my Win 7 HP system as I had on my old Vista HP system, to assist in performance.

After setting no (zero size) pf on C: going through the motions on re-start I get a message indicating that windows has by default created a pf on C:, (I take it this is for memory dump purposes) & on checking the external disk no pf was created although in advanced settings dialogue box a ?system managed? text is indicated against drive I:, the funny thing is on C: the page file size was exactly the same prior to change even though no page file is indicated for C: in the dialogue box.

I tried again leaving a 200mb fixed sized pf for the memory dump on C: but got exactly the same response, system managed pf on I: where no pf exists on the drive.

Has anyone experienced & resolved a similar problem with their own system?

Leave the pagefile alone. If your system meets the requirements for running W7 you aren't going to see any benefit by moving the pagefile.

Anyone who has installed IE7 will have noticed that standard top application menu bar (File, Edit, View etc) is no longer visible. You can easily turn it on but it shows on the second toolbar line over to the right hand side of the screen rather than in its familiar position at the top. You can either get used to it or alternatively apply this registry patch that restores it to its traditional position.

I save all my work to a folder named "Alex". It contains sub folders for different things including correspondence, photographs, music etc. This folder appears at the top of the right hand side of the Start menu.

If I go to open a file through this short, cut a window appears giving the "tree" of folders and files and across the top is the full description of the file location beginning >Alex>......>filename.

However, if I highlight the file, right click and open properties, its location is described as C:/User/User/filename.

Also if I double click on the computer short cut on the right hand side of the Start menu, I get a window showing the partitions of the hard drive (OS (C:) and RECOVERY (D:)) ad the DVD RW Drive (E:). Opening OS (C:) I find folder for DELL, Drivers, Program files etc and Users. Opening Users I find Public, User and User two. User contains all the folders and files in my Alex folder.

Why do my files have alterative location names? Can I simplify it to just C:/Alex/..... What is the normal practice?

I am using a Dell Inspiron 1525 with Windows Vista Home Premium.

Thank you

A:File location confusion

Vista uses a number of basic Folders one of which is Users inside which it holds a folder for each user account and for PUBLIC folders - in your case Alex is one of these user accounts.
Each User Account will have its own SET of basic folders.
Suggest you Right Click on START and open EXPLORE and OPEN ALL USERS reduce your C: drive down to its basic folders and have good look at them to get an idea of the structure.
I wouldn't try changing anything - just get used to the structure and accept as normal.

You need to change the download location in the browser. Since you didn't specify the browser I'll assume you are using IE in which case you need to open the Downloads windows from Tools -> View Downloads -> click Options and then change the path.

Similar settings exist for Chrome, Firefox, and probably all other browsers.

Hi wisdum,

Have a look in your PAGE FOOTER (VIEW \ HEADERS & FOOTERS \ Switch to Footer) , youv'e probably got some AutoText there.

If this is on every doc then you've got this in your NORMAL.Dot template.

Search for this and edit it (in WORD) to remove the footer.

If you haven't made any intentional changes to NORMAL.Dot then you could just delete ALL occurences of it; that's OK 'cos WORD will re-create a new default one next time Word starts.

A:open file location problem

HI and welcome to the Forum
I don't quite understand what your problem is? If you right click on a shortcut on your desktop and click "Properties" where do you see "open file location" as it doesn't appear when I do it in any browser? If you just right click on the icon on your desktop you will see this:

Sorry just read the next thread and i did indeed miss that box

I just finished setting up my wife's new laptop and then totally spaced the PIN that I used to setup her laptop. She is running Windows 10 Home edition. I am still logged on so I have access to Windows but I can't use the PIN reset function and I didn't get a chance to setup her Microsoft Account info, so I can't use that feature either.

I am looking for a file directory location where the PIN is saved. It has to be saved in an XML file or something like that.

Can anyone help direct me to that location?

A:File Directory location where PIN is saved

Welcome to the forum.

I expect that PIN numbers are stored the same way login passwords are. Essentially they aren't stored at all. When a password is created the system does a mathematical operation on it and stores the result. When you login the same operation is done on the entered password and the results are compared. If they match you are logged in. The password itself isn't stored anywhere. This data is stored in the registry in a location that isn't normally accessible even to an elevated admin account. The details of how all this works are of course undocumented.

Storing PIN numbers in clear text would be a serious security risk.

I presume file attachments associated with incoming mail are stored on my computer in some hidden temporary folder and that these are linked when using Outlook Express.

Can somebody tell in WHAT FOLDER, the attachment files are stored.

I have an issue with Outlook Express but if I am able to locate the source of the attachments it may solve my problem.

I am using Windows XP -SP3

Hello we are running Windows 7 Enterprise x32
When you click on the Start Button Win7 has the Projector mode toggle.

They want it to Automatically Clone with no choice needed by our "lazy" users.

Now the word is Duplicate on the toggle bar so I am not sure which word to use. NOR am I sure where to place this file for it to run at start up for all users.

c:\\Windows\System32\DisplaySwitch.exe /duplicate

A:Need Help- Quick Batch File / Location

Hello Jewel, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You could create a shortcut using the tutorial below with the target location below to have it switch to "Duplicate" when used.

C:\Windows\System32\DisplaySwitch.exe /clone

Display Switch Shortcut - Create

Once the shortcut is created, you could save it where you like (ex: in a C:\Users\Public folder), then use the tutorial below to create a task to run this shortcut from this location at startup for all users.

Task - Create to Run a Program at Startup and Log On

Hope this helps,

I have a dual boot system running XP Pro & Vista Ultimate. I ran System Mechanic in XP a couple of hours ago. When I went in to Vista, I noticed a piece of software missing (TextTwist). I tried to do a 'system restore' but, was informed no restore points had been created. I know that they have, 'cos I create a restore point at least daily. I have Stellar Data Recovery installed in Vista, but I need to know where the restore files are located.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:Vista restore file location

You cannot recover deleted restore points. The files for System Restore are stored in the "System Volume Information" folder of each drive. But along with the files there will be undocumented entries in other files. I suspect that System Mechanic deleted the restore points.

I have a low opinion of tools like System Mechanic. The problem is that they put potentially dangerous tools in the hands of people who have no understanding of what they are doing. A Major element of System Mechanic is a registry cleaner. These utilities generally cause more problems than they solve and should generally be avoided.

Hello,First of all what a great web resource!I followed the manual steps to rid my Laptop of hijack. However, in the instructions it told me to delete several files that the Hijack program found and I can't find them. Here is an example of the entry from the Hijack program:R1 HKCU/software/microsoft/internet explorer/main, search bar = ideas as to where I caould find this file and others like it?Many thanks,Dave

A:HiJack File Location Question

After running HJT sometimes the offending file is no longer loaded so it is gone. The basics of this are:
scumware.exe loads at startup or browser launch then creates or downloads a new process such as malware.exe. When the parent program is stopped the child dies. That particular example you show is a search hook in your browser, not a file. It directs your search through that URL.

Hope that helps.

Feel free to post your log if you'd like me to take a look at it.

I am trying to find where the wallpaper file is located. I thought i saved the picture, but i didn't. There's got to be a temp location for this file, otherwise it wouldn't reappear after reboot. Can anyone help me locate this temp folder?

A:Wallpaper temp file location

You didn't say what windows version you are using.

For windows XP, wallpaper files are located in C:\Windows\Web\Wallpaper.

If you know the name of the file, simply do a search for that name.

If you don't know the name and it is showing up as the current wallpaper, right click an empty space on your desktop and click "Properties." Click the "Desktop" tab and in the left column you will see the name of the current wallpaper highlighted. Write down the name of that file and do a search for that file name to see its current location.

I'm trying to burn files to a double layer DVD +R using Windows Explorer. The total size of my files is:
7.43 GB (7,980,351,488 bytes)
When I drag the files onto the disc, I get this error:
"There is not enough space on BD-RE Drive. You need an additional 3.28 GB to copy these files."

My C and D drives only have about 4GB free each, so Windows must be trying to use one of those to store the temporary files before they're burned. But my E drive has about 40GB free. How do I get Windows to use that drive instead?
