Odd Laptop docking station problem

Q: Odd Laptop docking station problem

The PC in question is a Dell Latitude D620. When off the docking station, the screen display is normal, however when it's hot docked, or cold booted from the dock, the screen displays only 1/4 of the screen, however it shows the entire image. It's hard to put into words for me, it's displaying the entire desktop, same resolution, however the image its self is maybe 4 inches. I did fix this problem on my laptop by updating drivers, however I would have to explain this process over the phone as I am a support guy, and if it doesn't work, then I'm back to the beginning. Has anyone else experienced this, or am I the only one with the off the wall calls..

A: Odd Laptop docking station problem

nevermind, it's fixed. the person who is using the laptop forgot to mention they adjusted the resolution, and it's a widescreen monitor, so it had the black bars.. amazing how people forget the details...

Hey all-

I have a Dell Latitude D800 that I use with a docking station. Everything has been working but occasionally when I put the laptop into the docking station and power up, the external monitor will not come on unless I open the lid of my laptop. When I close the lid of my laptop, the system goes to standby and the external monitor goes out. I went into the power options and changed the option for when the laptop is closed to "Do Nothing". I would like to be be able to keep it on Standby like it had been working originally. Any ideas why this may be occurring?

A:Problem with Laptop and Docking Station

standby mode is known to cause system issues (instability, currupt files, screwed up settings). I wouldn't use standby anymore if I were you.

To get your old settings back in order, run system restore and choose a restore point prior to when the issue started happening. (then you should disable standby mode so that that doesn't happen again)

also... check your display settings, there may be an option for primary monitor default when docked.

A:laptop docking station

There is only one way (assuming you don't make the things) to test this.

Hook up the laptop to another one (or hook up someone elses laptop to yours) - there is no other way to test something like this.

My HP Quickdock station is not charging my laptop and I've had to connect the AC adapter to the laptop since the battery went down to 40% yesterday. Is there a fix short of replacing it? I run a small business and can't afford to have these issues!

If I were you, I would take it back. If it's plugged in properly and not charging, I'd say it's a hardware fault with the actual HP quickbook station.

I'm looking for a laptop that will snap into a docking station. I haven't been very successful so far. What I find primarily are docking stations that plug into a laptop's USB port. The two problems that I have with these are that they generally don't seem to do video well, and they generally don't let you close the laptop, which leaves a clumsy setup for staff as they use it. I have a few Targus docking stations, but they're really not being used much. I'd like to simply replace desktops with the docking stations, and it seems that finding a laptop with a snap-in bottom would be ideal.

Any good recommendations for this?

Thanks.

I have a HP Compaq 6510b laptop attached to a HP docking station with Dual-link DVI (product # EN488AA, S/N CNU830Y0NH). The laptop power adapter quit ages ago, the docking station adapter (HP part # 384023-001) will fit both laptop and docking station.

I was trying to identify the old adapter and briefly plugged it into the laptop while the laptop was attached to the docking station. There was no power to the old adapter. The laptop switched to battery power and will not charge on the docking station. I can plug the adapter into the laptop and it will charge and run off the adapter. The problem is my network connections do not work through the docking station if it is not plugged in. Do I need a new docking station or is there an easier fix?

I have an IBM ThinkPad T22 laptop and I recently was given an IBM Thinkpad Docking station with port replicator and ultrabay 2000 slot (2631 20U). It also has a half-size (half height) PCI slot in it.

My graphics card in the T22 is about crap and I really don't need to get a new laptop for what I'm doing right now. But I would like to be able to have better graphics if the opportunity arose.

My question is, if I was to put a new upgraded graphics card into the PCI card slot of the Docking station, would my laptop recognize the new graphics card and run off of it, or is this impossible with laptops?

I know this is a detailed post but I figured someone out there may have an answer.

Thanks,
Dave

Hello! Welcome to TechSpot

PCI Slot

Note this is a Half Height, or 'low profile' slot. Separate brackets are required for low profile PCI cards. Normal cards will not fit.

Many use the half-size PCI slot for peripherals like secondary video cards, TV tuners, audio cards, etc. This is considered by many to be the highlight of the Dock II, and is a feature that few other docks have. The Dock II does not support AGP or PCI Express. The Ultrabay 2000 slot can be used to connect other IBM peripherals, such as second hard disks or CD/DVD drives. Potential owners of the Dock II are often concerned about compatibility and recommendations of video cards. See the compatible video cardsClick to expand...

I have an HP Compaq nc8430 laptop running Windows 7 attached to an HP docking station HSTNN-1X01-444706-1.
The battery in the laptop will not charge when it is in the docking station, but will charge when I pull it out of the docking station and plug the AC adaptor directly into the laptop itself. All other functions in the docking station work normally except for the battery charging function.
I have also tried it in a 2nd docking station with the same results, so believe the problem is in the laptop and not the docking station.

A:HP Docking Station won't charge laptop

It may be the power adapter.
I do know that Dells do this sort of thing where they won't both run and charge in a docking station if the power brick is not a 90Watt one. Use a 70watt one and it complains.

Check that the adapter is powerful enough.

As I can't seem to find a docking station made specifically for my new Asus N53S laptop, I am looking for recommendations on a universal docking station (with video output). There are several choices out there, but they all seem to get mixed reviews for performance or installation. Can anyone suggest a particular make/model that works well. Any Asus owners out there with a universal docking station that does the job? Any info and/or recommendations would be welcome!

A:Looking for a good Asus laptop docking station

The Kensington universal notebook docking station is compatible with Asus, and all major brands in fact, I'd check that out...

There's a review of an admittedly slightly older version (from 2009) here, but it wins a best buy award and gets a very good write-up.

Certainly well worth considering. Hope that helps somewhat...

Hi. I am not a computer tech, so pardon my lack of pc language. I have a Dell Studio, running Windows 7 Ultimate (64 bit OS). I have a docking station that I plug into with a monitor, keyboard, etc. For the past few months, I have not used the docking station, but this past weekend, I plugged my laptop into the docking station. I got a request for some sort of update (sorry I don't remember what for, but think it had something to do with video/monitor maybe). I went through the motions, and I think the update failed to install. I rebooted the system, and it runs fine. The only problem I encounter is when I play Runescape online, my laptop provides no warnings, and it just shuts itself off after about 15 minutes of play time. I have tried using different internet browsers (Firefox and Google Chrome) and that does not seem to help. I unplugged the laptop, and played RS and I had no problems, so I feel that the issue is with the docking station or monitor. I have no idea how to proceed in attempting to fix this issue. Please help.

I am getting a Dell Inspiron for a new job. I am now debating whether or not to get a new personal desktop for use at home or to somehow make the new Dell the "centerpiece" of a home configuration consisting of stand-alone hard-drive, DVD burner, printer, and monitor connected to either a docking station or just plugged to a powered hub that connects to the laptop. What would be some of the technical pluses or minuses of that setup? Thus would be under XP, and I think I could create two users, Jekyll and Hyde, one for at-home and one for at-work so the system would recognize or not recognize the peripheral configuration. Am I correct in this? Thanks for your thoughts.

A:Pros and cons of using laptop + docking station

Well, there's almost no technical pluses as except for not having save your print jobs to disk, or disconnecting and reconnecting your printer if you have the desktop and the laptop + docking station. It really depends on what you're going to be doing with it. I have a Dell Inspiron 8500 and it can play all of today's current games, but it can't play them as well as my gaming rig. The only Dell notebook that could truly even compare with a well equipped desktop is a maxxed out Inspiron 9100 (that's what they're calling the XPS isn't it), and even then, you can't overclock, install as much new hardware, and all that other fun stuff. If you're not going to be doing much gaming or graphics intensive apps, I'd say that a laptop plus docking station should do just fine. After all, I went for months with mine before building my gaming rig, and only then because it was in the shop!

I am running XP on my Dell Laptop. When it is in the docking station, the CPU runs at 100%. I am running Norton and Spybot. I am unable to determine what is causing the issue. If I take the laptop out of the docking station or do not have the power cord plugged in, the laptop runs great. Please help me.

A:Dell Laptop runs at 100% when in docking station

Can you precisely identify the process hogging that CPU?

You could download and run the free Process Explorer. You'll be able to precisely identify the culprit. By right-clicking on the process showing high CPU and selecting Properties… > Threads tab, you'll be able to pinpoint the thread that's hogging CPU within the process. You'll need to slide the bar left of CSwitch Delta in order to see the CPU values.

Process Explorer doesn't require any installation. Simply run the executable file once downloaded. Then, configure the Process Explorer window to your liking. You can even replace the Task Manager (CTRL+ALT+DEL) by clicking on Options > Replace Task Manager. You'll get a lot more features and details than with the Task Manager.

To determine which Process might be hogging CPU, click on the little graphs located at the top right of the window. A new window with four graphs will open, the first one being CPU. Click inside the window and press the spacebar to freeze the display. This will make it easier to hover your mouse cursor over the CPU peaks in order to read which process(es) is/are creating them.

Laptop is on and plugged into the docking station which is "powered".  Connection to monitor / keyboard and mouse is fine, however I'm surprised to see a lower power - plug is soon message.  Isn't docking station supposed to provide power to the laptop?

A:Super Speed USB 3.0 Docking Station - No power to laptop?

Actually, I believe what makes a docking station a docking station, is because it is a device which actually connects to a docking port. Thus the name docking station.
A usb port is not a docking port.
A docking port is a single port which provides many pins so different protocols such as video, audio, usb, and yes power etc. all have their own connections so they may run at their full potential.
A docking port is not a conversion of many protocols to a usb signal, then trying to cram it two ways across far fewer pins.
And seeing as all 'docking ports' as far as I know, do have power connectors in them, I can see how Dell's calling a port replicator a 'docking station' could confuse somebody.
I don't believe it to be an honest mistake either, just deceitful tactics of the marketing department to take advantage of what people believe to be a docking port so they can make a nickel.

Think of it not as a shipping dock, with full access to power, fuel, water, sewage connections, the whole works.
But rather a boat anchor so you can anchor your ship off shore, then take your time waiting on what ever ship to shore transportation boats you can find to cart a limited amount of resources through a limited method.

Hi!
I have a Latitude E7740 that runs Ubuntu Xenial (16.04). I dock it to a "Dell EURO2 Advanced E-port II" docking station.
If I boot it in the docking station, everything works fine, and I find all my two DVI-connected monitors.
However, if I undock, then put it into the dock again while running, it fails to enable the screens. I'm using a script called autorandr for switching between display modes - it uses xrandr. It tries to run:
xrandr --output DP1-1 --gamma 1.0:1.0:1.0 --mode 1920x1200 --panning 0x0 --pos 0x0 --rate 59.95 --reflect normal --rotate normal --output DP1-2 --gamma 1.0:1.0:1.0 --mode 1920x1200 --panning 0x0 --pos 1920x0 --rate 59.95 --reflect normal --rotate normal
But the X server responds with:
X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)  Major opcode of failed request: 140 (RANDR)  Minor opcode of failed request: 21 (RRSetCrtcConfig)  Serial number of failed request: 48  Current serial number in output stream: 48
Running this exact command after booting in the dock is doing the right thing, but after undocking then docking, it doesn't work.
Any ideas here? I have updated to the latest BIOS version.
Problem also reported in launchpad with lot's of debug info, here:

A:Solved: Sound on laptop doesn't work when I use docking station...

Most of these all in one dockingstations (ones not made for a specific brand and that connect to anything) kind of take over the Laptops functions what you need to do is disable the kensington audio drivers as when you attach the docking station these drivers try and replace the notebooks ones.

What you want to do is look at the device manager with the dockingstation unpluged then plug it in and see what audio devices it loads up and disable them.

Either that or write/look ionline with kensington and get a list of them.

I unplugged everything again and in desperation took out the battery and put in back in and bingo it started up. I re-hooked everything and went on my merry way. Sometime later, bang it happens again. I tried the same corrections and they worked. The THIRD time this happend I left OFF the DOCKING STATION and it has not happened again.

When the laptop is plugged into the docking station headphones won't work, regardless of whether I plug them into the laptop or the docking station.  This means that every time I want to make a Skype call, for example, I have to disconnect from the docking station and plug the headphones into the laptop.  Any one have any suggestions?

A:Latitude E5550 - headphones won't work when laptop is plugged into docking station

Is the headset being detected at all by the notebook when detected? Right click on the speaker icon on the task bar and choose playback devices, are the headphones listed? If they are listed click on it and then click the configure button to bring up speaker setup. Click the test button and do you get the test chimes via the headset?
If you did hear the test chimes then the headset is working fine.   Clicking cancel should return you back to sound properties. Make sure that headphone is still selected and then click the “Set Default” button. This should but the green “default” checkmark icon on the headphones now. Test to see if the headset is working correctly now.
If you continue to have problems please reply back with the model of docking station and headphones that are being used. Please also include if the headphones have an analog connection (headphone jack) or are USB. Please also include the version of Windows on the system.

Thanks

Now when I turn it on it will run for a while but then freezes and after a long while shots off. If I try to turn it on soon after, it wont even start, the light just comes, it starts but then shuts down.

I have noticed a continuing problem with using our Pro Book 640 laptops and Elite Book 8460 and 8470s, when docked in docking stations and sharing keyboard, video and mouse through Belkin 2-port KVM switches.  The problem is that the keyboard and mouse will sometimes just quit responding, although the lights are on, indicating they are connected.  A number of techniques are tried to get the functionality back, including uplugging power from the KVM and plugging it back in, unplugging the keyboard and mouse from the KVM, and rebooting the laptop. Any one of these may or may not solve the issue.  My question is, has anyone else experienced similar issues when using docking stations in combination with a KVM? Thank you.TJfromVA

Hello,

i have this little thing and I connected it to my Lenovo notebook, but i dont have internet connection nor any image on monitor. Mouse, keyboard and headphones work fine.

After much effort, I found some driver (although it says that it dont need any installation to work) and I managed to get image. But, problem with ethernet connection remained. When I plug in the cable, niether the led on the dock interface light nor the one on the switch...
Friend that gave me this says that it worked ok on his macnihe.

What can be the reason for this?

Hi,

Got a weird one.

I had an old Toshiba t900 which died recently. it was on a small network and was also connected a HP Laserjet 6P/MP postscript printer. Most printing was done via the network to this printer. the printer was actually installed as a laserjet 6L because otherwise the driver sent everything via postscript with took for ever (well graphics did) and frequently failed with a "not enough memory error"

I have replaced this with a Tecra M10 (no parallel port) and a docking station which has a parallel port.

I did install the laserjet 6P/MP postscript driver and it all worked fine (except of course for the speed and memory problems mentioned above).

I then deleted the 6P/MP device and installed the printer as a 6L (as before) but when I tried to print a test page it did not send anything to the printer and reports a device error.

Ive uninstalled, re-installed, rebooted etc but made no impact. The only thing that is slightly odd is that after deleting the devices and rebooting the sometimes reappear suggesting maybe I have not got rid of them completely

If I start from scratch (no printer visible) and install the printer (replace current driver) as a 6MP it seems to install OK (except that Under printer->Properties, the panel is blank)

But when I print a test page, nothing happens (no lights flash on the printer) and a yellow triangle appears. The print queue simply says error - printing

Any suggests as to what I need to do to get this fixe... Read more

A:Printing problem through docking station to LPT1

OK it was tedious but I got there.

Delete all printers and keep deleting and rebooting until they have all gone (there must be an easier way?)
Plug in the printer and reboot the computer so it installs OK as 6P/6MP Postscript
Check it does actually work!!

Go to devices and printers
Take the installed working 6P/6MP Postscript
Right click, Printing properties
Advanced
Select a driver from the drop down list (6MP in my case) I guess these drivers were there from previous efforts so if the right driver is not there you may have to install it and then start from the beginning

Change the share name to avoid confusion
Go to the other PC
Install a network printer
Select the one you have just renamed
Test it and Message 'Unable to access printer'!! b*g*e*!!

Probably some garbage left over from previous efforts (now deleted)so
Reboot and try again.
Now it works.:-)

And now perhaps I can get on and do something useful!!

We have around 100x E7440's and on most of them we have the same problem.
When the machine is operated on battery then the lid is closed it goes to standby/hibernation (this is not the problem).
But when the machine is docked into the port replicator / docking station and switched on, as soon as Windows starts, it goes to Blue Screen.
OS: Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit.

Hello, I have a problem with docking station for Elitebook 2560p.Mini-jack port is not working in docking station but it works in notebook. When I plug the cable from simple 2.0 speakers in audio port from notebook (PC is plugged into docking station) it works. But when I'm switching cable to port from docking station it's not working. I thought that regular audio port (in notebook) should be disabled when notebook is plugged in docking station. I saw only drivers for USB port for docking station. I could not find drivers for audio port of docking station. Please advise how to make it work.  Best regards,Patryk

I'm using win 7 Pro, SP-1, Dell Vostro 64 bit laptop, a Toshiba Dynadoc and the dynadoc utility_II and a secondary monitor, and a MS wireless Mouse 5000.
The wireless mouse works fine when hooked up to the laptop at home with both laptop and monitor screen viewing well.
The problem is when traveling, unhooking the docking station and only using the wireless mouse with the laptop, the laptop does not recognize the mouse. The wireless sender attached to the laptop shows light indicator activity and the mouse lights up when manually activated, but doesn't recognize the wireless sender and shuts off.
I've tried unloading the dynadock utility program and changing control panel mouse settings. With system check the mouse seems to be recognized, but it doesn't reconnect to computer.
Any ideas ?

Hi guys,

i am experiencing some problems with the 2 mentioned laptops.

The 1st one is:
I bought a used 7020 to replace the broken screen of 7200. After disassembled the screen, I noticed that the connectors have the same number of wires, but one of the terminal of the 7200's screen has a larger socket. "no problem" I thought, and with patience I picked up the cable of the 7020 adapter an put it into the 7200.
But when i turned it on i saw only colored lines and squares :S :S
If you want i can provide the PN, if it could help...Even if i check the compatibility before order.

2nd problem:
Portege 7200 recognize correctly the docking station, while the 7020 emit some beeps before boot, and obviously it doesn't work with him. I checked on toshiba's site and the dock would be totally compatible!

And for last... Where can i find bios updates?

Sorry for my bad english, i hope that someone could help me!

regards,
Francesco

A:Compatibility problem with Portege 7020 / 7200 CT display & docking station

Hello Francesco

You will be really lucky if anyone here can help you with these old notebook models. I am pretty sure they are about 10 years old.
Without maintenance manuals and enough knowledge is not easy to help you with this display replacement.

This issue with docking station can be related to defective hardware. Both notebooks are so similar and both of them can be used with this docking station. How you can be sure hardware is top on 7020?

BIOS updates are available on http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/download_bios.jsp but as I can see for Portege 7000 there is no BIOS update, just for 7020.

If you want you can contact nearest Toshiba service provider. they have maintenance manuals for this old notebooks and they can help you offering exact info about parts you need.

File Transfer - Help Wanted

It will be from the old computer running Windows XP to a new computer running Windows 7.

The old computer has files which I have accumulated over a number of years, it is a mixture of those used rarely, used frequently and junk.

The chances are some of the files will never be used again, but they just might be wanted at some future date. I am therefore reluctant to scrap anything. Neither do I want to put a lot of possibly unnecessary files on the new computer.

I need to be able to search the old hard drive and recover a file if it is wanted.

The old computer is about 9 years old and is slow and may not be worth upgrading.

I now have two computers and one monitor and I am not sure what would be the best route.

I have not used a Docking Station before but thought this could be a possibility, on Amazon I found:

no replies...So does that mean there isn't one?that is a bit of a downer. Also, with regards to the max. resolution, surely that is a much more important feature to document on a laptop's specifications page, unlike rubbish like "onekey recovery", or the fact that it comes preloaded with a lot of bloatware like Accuweather.I assume that the lack of a display port will limit the direct connection to HDMI's maximum resolution of 1920x1200.Thus, the question about docking stations (or other USB 3 gadgets) that can support a larger resolution.

At my work, I have a laptop that is hooked to a docking station. I've only been here for a little while, so yesterday was the second time that I undocked it. The first time, I did not use a power cord when I undocked it. It worked fine when out of the station. I used a power cord the second time. Before I left work, I put it back in the docking station, and I left. This morning, the laptop wouldn't start (in the docking station). I removed it from the station and tried to start it without the station. It still wouldn't start. Finally, I used the power cord and it began charging and would also start. After a while, I tried putting it back in the docking station, but it still would not charge. So right now, I am undocked and charging with the power cord.

Can anyone help me with this?

Purchased a Winstars Docking Station at Maplin today (see link below for product details).

The box says XP, Vista and W7. A techy at Maplin assured me that it was a "bog-standard" USB hub and that it would work with no problems with W8.1 (and it is a W8.1 computer that I want to use it with).

No, it does not work with W8.1 (see Screenshot attached for error message)

There is nothing wrong with the unit itself. Tested on other computers (XP, Vista, W7) - installs automatically, visible in Explorer, visible in Disk Management, works with all types of disk media. Perfect - except that it does not work with W8.1.

I have updated the Driver. Rebooted. Tried different USB ports. Same error message.

Before I take it back to Maplin does anyone perhaps have a solution.....

A:T61 docking station worth it?

I'll throw in my  two cents on this one.  I have both the 2505 and 2504 docks.  I much prefer the 2504's because they have a DVI video and a separate audio output that the 2505 doesn't,  besides they both sell for about the same used.  The DVI output allows a digital video signal that hooks up directly to a monitor with same or I use a DVI to HDMI cable to hook up to a HDMI port.  I have speakers already hooked up to the audio and the mouse and keyboard hooked to the USB ports on the dock, and a dedicated, to the dock, power adapter.  This allows me to plug in the laptop, power up and everthing boots up without even having to raise the laptop lid by setting up the video to go to the monitor screen.   I have them set up in multiple locations so can move my laptop easily to areas where I want to use it for:  music, internet, videos, etc.  These docks are readily available and inexpensive. As far as heat both docks are designed to raise the laptop off the surface and have venting to allow air to go underneath the fan area as well as air vents in the upper corner where the fan is located.  I am not sure how effective this is but it does seem to be a well thought out design so I am sure it does some good but probably not enough to prevent the well documented NVIDIA issue.  I have both laps with the Intel gpu and NVIDIA and none have failed so far. I am running Windows 7 on... I have a client that has a hp laptop and accompanying docking station. The usb ports on the docking station suddenly stopped working. I replaced the docking station with a brand new one, worked for about 2 weeks, then crapped out again. While in the docking station, the hp usb ports work fine, only the usb ports on the docking station are out of order.

JohnWill gave me a usb hack about a year ago, and I ran that, and while it then recognized the the 'new hardware', it stated I had to reboot; rebooted, and nothing showed up.

Any ideas? The hardware is not local, but if push comes to shove I can get the make and model of it.

Just got docking station, D9Y32AA, "2013 UltraSlim Docking Station". Connecting computer seemed to be straightforward and simple enough. Just wondering if there are any hidden capabilities inherent in the device that I might exploit. I am not considered a "power user" though I do use most of the MS Office Apps to include PowerPoint, Outlook, Excel and Word. Also, will turning off the power at the Docking Station keep the computer's internal battery from charging? Is there danger in the battery being damaged by staying connected to the docking station power too long? Thanks for your thoughts, CW

Just purchased a Thinkpad P50 and Thinkpad Ultra Docking Station before I head off to college in the Fall, and having the issue of the docking station not charging my laptop while it is running. If the laptop is closed down, it will charge the laptop as indicated by a little green light by the charging port, however as soon as I open the laptop and start doing anything, it will not charge anymore. The docking station is working fine otherwise, as indicated by an external monitor, keyboard, mouse, and hard drive all plugged into the docking station, not into the laptop. This is a brand new machine, I bought it and have had it for less than 10 days now. I spent alot of the morning on call with a Lenovo technician but couldn't resolve the issue; he recommended that I send the laptop back to them so they could replace/fix the motherboard.

Hi, It does not appear there is a docking station for the HP Pavilion x2 12" Detachable 2in1 laptop. What are the alternatives for a docking station such that I can hook up my laptop to a monitor/tv, full size keyboard/mouse, etc. Also, aside from the HP Active Pen, what other digital pen/stylus are compatible with the Pavilion x2 12? Thanks

Hi, The Envy m7 notebook does not have docking port therefore you have to use USB docking port. There are many USB docking ports around such as:    http://www.amazon.com/HP-Replicator-Docking-H1L08AA-ABA/dp/B008KMDVME (HP store says there are 11 products but the site is down, you can wat to get a full list       http://store.hp.com/us/en/mdp/accessories Regards.

Searched site for info on HD docking station. No threads answered my questions.

Even though I received some wonderful help from some of you recently, I couldn't get rid of a virus on an older computer. I've decided to buy an HD docking station and hopefully transfer some of my needed and wanted files to another HD. This HD is brand new with nothing on it. Will I be able to transfer files to it if it doesn't have an operating system?

I'm definitely not going to do a mass transfer, I'll pick and chose .jpgs, videos and documents. No .exe programs what-so-ever.

Will this way be safe to keep the pesky virus on the old PC? Once I have everything I want off the old PC, I'll give it a complete restore with the original Windows.

I'd appreciate any help.

Thank you
Tony

Hello Tony

Do you remember the name of the virus and where it was...

What is or was the name of the Anti-virus on the computer that has the virus.

Do you have malwarebytes if not I would download it on the old system and run a full scan as it can pick up and delete virus's that others miss, here is the link and chose the free version..
Malwarebytes : Free anti-malware, anti-virus and spyware removal download
Try and get rid of the virus this way and then transfer the items you want...

The network card (Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet) on the docking station for my Z60m went out (does not show link at all, always shows unplugged). I tried removing/reinstalling with the most recent driver, but no luck. Is there any way to active the internal NIC while plugged into the docking station? That would at least give me a work around, although slightly inconvienant. Thanks.

I need to find a compatible docking station for my notebook.  Any suggestions? Thanks

A:I need a docking station for my hp 15-g010dx

Yes HP no longer makes true "docking stations" for its consumer laptops. A docking station is a snap-down platform that provides power to the laptop and replicates ports and allows for expansion such as additional hard drives, etc. Best you can do is to use a USB 3.0 "port replicator" many of which come with video and all the ports you could want but do not power the laptop. You still need to connect an AC adapter directly to the laptop to use the port replicator.  There are lots of these on the market. HP makes one and others do, too. Post back if you need any help. Expect to pay around $100 +/- for one with video. https://www.amazon.com/HP-3005PR-USB-Port-Replicator/dp/B008KMDVPQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1475009377... If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

I'm desperately looking for a dock for my new Spectre, since it only provides USB-C. I've researched and learnt that the Spectre is not compatible with generic USB-C chargers, and only charges on HP USB-C chargers. Is there a compatible dock from HP in the works, or is there a third party one?

For some reason my CD-ROM doesn't want to work it seems like the drivers are installed but it gives an exclamation mark. I tried all sort of things like installing it and reinstalling it and I tried getting updates from Microsoft Updates. Also I tried getting it from Sony.com but it seems that since my notebook was made for XP it doesn't have any drivers for Vista. So I will have to find them myself somehow. I have Windows Vista Home Basic. My notebook is the Sony PCG-R505ESP. I really need help on this please since if I don't make my CD-ROM work then I can't install any programs that uses a CD.

I can say that Win XP and 2000 has no problem with the CD-ROM only Vista has this problem but it might actualy be the driver but I don't know.

On the device manager it says "This device cannot start. (Code 10)"

I also looked to see if there is any filters on the regedit but there wasn't any so that is strange.

This is the model of my CD-ROM

"Sony i.LINK CD-RW DVD-ROM Drive IEEE 1394 SBP2 Device"

Just to let you guys know that my notebook is a docking system so the CD-ROM is attached to the dock.

Everything else seems to work perfectly fine but just the CD-ROM doesn't work at all.

Thank You

A:Docking station CD-ROM drive

I do know that when I talked to someone they said it was just the driver is not the version that the CD-ROM normaly works on meaning I might have to put the driver that comes with XP. The driver on Vista might be newer than the XP one so it doesn't work right since normaly my notebook came with XP.
But my questions is where can I get the XP driver?
