File opens with wrong program, bad file icon in explorer view

Q: File opens with wrong program, bad file icon in explorer view

I recently had to do a system restore and now my .jpg and jpeg files have a bad file icon. They still do open with the windows pic program as I want them to - but only on the admin accout, I usually surf and play and do everything else with a user account, and even if I reset everything under folder options for the file associacions it somehow doesn't apply to the other account.
The funny thing is that windows tells me in the file association menu that I changed the file association's properties and can set them back to standart "photo suite 6" - a program that I uninstalled ages ago ... can I somehow set this back to the normal winxp picture and fax displaying thing?

I work with a lot of animation sequences, and when using Win explorer it has always irked me that if I want to view anything but list or details view then the filenames are truncated.

This is a problem because the sequences I work with often have long(ish) names and numerically iterated, generally being suffixed by a padded number.

Is there a way that I can view tiles, or content, or icons without having the filenames truncated?

(Bonus question: how come sometimes I get the option to view 'content' and other times the option is not there?)

Thanks peeps.

Curt.

Example image of what I'm talking about:

A:Windows explorer - How do I view full file names AND see an icon

You could try these options:
Increasing the Icon Spacing (horizontal and vertical) can allow for longer filenames.
Setting the icons to the largest size can also allow you to view longer names.
Also you could use Details view and have the Preview Pane active.
That program seems to be using the old style Windows dialogue boxes, so I'm not sure if any of the options (I listed above) will have much effect.

I wrote this batch file which does what I want it to do so far.

Code:
@echo off

"C:\Users\xxxxxx\Documents\HideTaskbar\HideTaskbar.exe"
"C:\Program Files (x86)\VideoLANold\VLC\vlc.exe"
"C:\Users\xxxxxx\Documents\HideTaskbar\ShowTaskbar.exe"

exit
VLC is a video program so I want to associate video files to this bat file. This would mean that when i clicked on a video file in Windows Explorer, the bat file would execute and VLC would open the file I double clicked. At the moment the only thing that happens in this setup is that the bat file executes like normal but no video is played.

Is this possible, and if so how can I accomplish it?

Have you tried associating the video files to open with VLC by default ?
Maybe you don't need a BAT file ?

I was doing some detailed drawings in photoshop, and I also had a generic photo up in photoshop as well. I went to save my drawings, but apparently accidentally saved the photo under the drawins name and then closed the program. This morning I discovered the bad news. Is there a way to get that drawing back? I do not know if it was ever saved before.

You might want to consider a System Restore if this is a recent occurrence.

Using the System File Checker (sfc scannow) would be my next suggestion.

In windows Explorer files of the extention .avi will have an icon that is that little film strip with a screen shot from the video file. Matroska files (.mkv) only show a generic icon in explorer? How can i fix this so that the Matroska file will show the screen shot from the video file as is does with avi files in windows explorer? I have Home Premium? Thanks:)

A:Matroska File to show screen shot as icon like an avi file does in explorer

I wrote a similar post about mov files in here
Have a quick read at it (to understand what you're doing and why it's the way it is), then grab some matroska directshow filters. There's a list here: http://www.matroska.org/downloads/windows.html

P.S: Keep in mind the filter sparses the mkv file only (aka the container), it does not decode the audio or video stream inside of it. If you're only getting a filter but can't see the video, it would be because you're missing the codec (compressor-decompressor) for the video stream. I'm mentioning it because mkv files are usually encoded using codecs for which the avi container is not suitable (for example H.264 or AC3). If that's the problem, be sure to get codecs too (for example ffdshow-tryouts for H.264, or AC3filter for AC3).

Anytime I drag a file(s) in a folder window, a translucent, oversized icon follows the mouse pointer, partially obscuring up to 4 nearby items.

Can this effect be disabled? I'm sure somebody at MS thought it was slick idea, but it just gives me a headache. I haven't found a setting that controls it -- maybe I'm looking in the wrong spot. (Am guessing, while this isn't an "animation" per se, it's in the same general category.)

Thanks a ton for any clues.

If you go to:

Control Panel / and click on the Administrative Tools icon / on my machine, it takes you to the Administrative Tools folder in the File Manager, and shows the 18 Shortcuts

Is it like this for everybody?

All of the other things in the Control Panel open in a dialog box that is similar to the Control Panel style, with icons - nothing else there opens to the File Manager.

I thought maybe since I installed Classic Shell, it altered this. Everything seems functional, just not the Administrative Tools Control Panel shell.

If I go to Google Images, and take a look at "Win 8 Administrative Tools," it looks like it is supposed to appear as icons within a Control Panel shell.

Please see screenshots.

Any ideas?

Just installed windows xp pro recently.

I have TXD Workshop. It does not need to be installed to run. My problem is when i go Right Click > Open With and try to open it with it the exe nothing happens at all. It does not add it to the program list or anything. I tried going though Folder options and changing it there, i tried deleting it there and re adding it, none of them worked.

TXD is a textures file for all those wondering.

On my old home edition of xp it used to work and it was great. I also tried re downloading the program obviously that didn't work either.

If anyone could help it would be great. Thank you to anyone who helps in advanced.

A:I Cant change the program a TXD File Opens With

The TXD file viewer is not built in to windows, you need to install a program that works with them, you probably had sometihing on the old build.

You can find various programs on the net that view TXD files, have a look at this link and maybe you should install TXD workshop.

Over the past week, there have been occasions when I'm in Firefox and when I type, no text appears. Instead the tabs at the top of the Firefox page (i.e. File, Edit, View, History) are selected. It seems that I need to close down all Firefox windows and reopen to get rid of the problem. But the fix is only temporary. It comes back a few days later. I'm not sure what the cause is. I've followed the steps on the "Read this first" section. Then I went through the steps in the Prep Guide. When I run rootrepeal, the scan seems to stop at c:/windows/winsxs/manifests. Of the files that seem to have been scanned in rootrepeal up until the manifests part, they all say "locked to the windows api!" in the status section. Since I can't get further, I'm attaching my dds and attach logs below. Would love to hear if I am doing something wrong. Thanks!!

For some reason my file types for MP3 which are associated with Winamp, have the icon for Nero Show Time... Doesn't matter what I do, I can't seem to get the icon to switch to a Winamp icon in my music folder. I can switch the icon in Options and File Types to the winamp icon, but when I go to my music folder the icon is still for Nero Show Time. Even after I reboot it's still the same.

This happened today after I updated Nero, before this things were fine.

Some things I tried...

If I click restore in Options and File Types it will restore and still be associated with Winamp, but the icon will change to the Nero Show Time icon. So it seems that the Nero Show Time icon is default, but the default player is Winamp..

I went to the Nero Show Time settings, but I can't seem to find any file type settings.

I cleaning the registry and rebooted...

I deleted the MP3 file type and set it up again..

Still no luck, any suggestions?

Thanks..

Hi, I need some help.
My uncle - probably the only person in the world that knows less than me about this kind of stuff - asked me to copy some pictures from a flash drive. There was only one file on the drive and I didn't really paid much attention. I clicked on it and it told me it needed to know the program to open it. So I checked the file again and it didn't have any of the regular extensions , instead it had a number ( like : filename.264 ). In the properties it said that it will open with windows shell common dll. I thought it probably was associated with a specifc program and because I was told it was pictures I thought I could try and see if it would open with windows photo viewer. I figure if it didn't I could try other programs. But I clicked too fast and forgot that by default the box saying always use selected program to open this kind of file is always checked for some reason, so windows photo viewer opened, and it said it couldn't open that file. WHen I went back to try opening with another program I realized that I had made windows photo viewer the default. I know how to change it, but only into another program. What I want is to get it back as it was before and have no idea of completely remove the association with the program and have it back as it was before I changed it. How can I do it? is it even possible?

Hello Everyone.

I use Windows 8.1.

Until few days ago, everything was working fine. No idea what happened but whenever I open the File Explorer/Windows Explorer, it always opens minimized. Earlier I just needed to maximize it and close it so that when the next time I open it, it opens maximized. But when I do that now, it still opens minimized.

Not just that. I like to have my files and folders view to be as "large icons". But, its all in "details" view now. Earlier if something like this happened, I would change it once to "large icons" and it remained intact upon my viewing next time. However, it doesn't happen now. Inspite of changing the view settings to "large icons", they still open "details" view.

Any idea, how to solve both the issues? It would be very helpful.

Thanks.

Welcome to the Seven Forums.

I saw your post right after you made it but I did not post a reply because:
1) Real life got in the way
2) I'm not sure that I understand your issue.
I'm not picking at your English, but this is important:

Your post mentioned, "another file is opens with that".

I'm guessing that you meant:
...another file is opened with that
or
...another file opens with that

Either way, the word open is really important to the description of your problem.

Let's just talk about Word for now.

When you open a Word, one or more temporary files may be created. This is normal and desired; but those temp file(s) should not automatically open in Word.

Please try this:
Close all copies of Word.
Open Windows (file) Explorer.
Double click on an existing Word document.

On my home computer I decided to change which player opens my mkv files. I went to Control Panel-->Default Programs-->Associate a file type or protocol with a program and when I clicked on a file type and then on 'Change Program' the hour glass went on as if it wad doing its job but then nothing happened. I tried it a 2nd time and still nothing. I rebooted and still nothing. OK off I go to my sister's PC. This time wanting to view my Nikon NEF files there I did the file association with XN view itself but it still opened it the windows default media viewer. Off I went to the Control Panel and do it from there and again the same thing. Since I had used this method to associate files before about a year ago and it worked fine I am now thinking that the Windows updates since then did something to make this no longer work. it is after all using 2 different computers and 2 different types of files which makes me think my deduction is correct. Does anyone have info regarding this and why it isn't working? and what could be done about it? Thanks

A:changing which default program opens a file no longer works

Dear pintree3,

you can use very simple trick to change the default programs which well work on all computers by following this steps:

1. Right click on the file. you need to change the default opening format program.
2. Select " Open with..."
3. Select the program suiting you and click on the below tick < Always use the selected program to open this kind of file >
4. click OK and all your files with the same format will be opened with.

Enjoy
I hope this is helpful for you.

Hi, I just bought some software called Major Markup from www.usclam.com. This package creates an HTML file to be used in the "description" section of an online auction, to help make a person's auction look prettier. I wasted no time in creating my first file, and when I was done, I saved it in My Documents with a file type called MAJ. Then when I went to open the file, it asked me what program I wanted to use to view the file. I had no idea which one to use, so I just randomly chose "Paint." Then, when I went to open the file, it said that Paint does not support that kind of file type. Now, whenever I create a new Major Markup file, it's automatically saved in Paint, but Paint won't open it. How can I save this file so that Paint won't be the program used to view the file, and which program should I use? I hope this isn't too confusing.

A:Solved: How to change the program used to view a file

OK, if it creates an html file, then the 3 letter extension at the end should be htm or html, as in Maj.htm or Maj.html. If you actually saved it as something.maj, and asked Paint to open all Maj files, then you'll never be able to use it. Go back to where you saved the ***.maj file, and renmae it to ***.htm

see if it works now.

You may need to go into the configuration opetions of the program, and make sure you have not changed the default save as file type to this .maj file. If you have, then change it back to .htm

Hey jbfoster,

I would strongly suggest you download Autoruns.exe from Windows Sysinternals. This utility will show you exactly what is being loaded when you start your system and allow you to temporarily or permanently disable the autorun. You will find the utility here:
Autoruns

I should note that the Windows 8 Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del or right-click on the toolbar) also has a startup section, but it does not give you as comprehensive a list as does autoruns.

Hope this helps.

For a few months, I'm guessing since around when Win 8.1 came out, "Save As" and the Browse file location icon have been opening Windows Explorer with some programs instead of my default file manger, XYplorer (default by the latter's settings). And the Windows Explorer window that does open is full screen without any size adjusting facility, that is, neither in the top right corner or by dragging the sides (the arrows are there but there's no drag). Two programs I use frequently that are exhibiting this are Internet Download Mgr and PDF X-Change Viewer. This wasn't a problem before recently under Win 8 or Win 7. Any ideas? Did MS make some changes in this regard with 8.1? (Win 8.1 Pro x64). Thanks,

This happens in all browsers, Chrome, firefox and IE.
This also comes with youtube videos not playing correctly or crashing after a few seconds or not playing at all. So flash probably has something to do with it.

I've been running Windows 10 since last August, after upgrading from Win 8.1 on my Asus laptop.
I use the taskbar (launchbar?) to start my favourite programs, such as Excel, and some 8-10 files
are stacked on the icon so I can right-click the icon and select/open my desired file.

That was until approximately 10 days ago, when clicking on a file name only opened Excel, and I have to
do a file/open within Excel to get the file I want open. Other programs that are also on the bar e.g. my PDF program, still opens the file name I click on.

Any suggestions?

Hi Wayne,
You haven't moved or renamed these Excel files, have you?
Does the same problem also happen with Word?
You could try repairing your office installation.
Right-click on the Start Button and select Control Panel>Programs and Features; wait for the list of installed programs to populate, then highlight Microsoft Office; click CHANGE up above the window, then REPAIR. You may have 2 repair options; if so, try the local one first and see if that does the trick.

Hope that helps.

The file associations for .LNK files on a Vista Home Premium SP1 computer have changed from their default association to another application program, ie. Internet Explorer Picture Viewer, with the result that none of the program shortcut icons or desktop icons launch their respective programs - they all attempt to launch Explorer.  Changing the file association on an individual shortcut results in all shortcuts being changed to the selected program.  Is there a way to change the .LNK file associations back to the Windows default in order to relate the shortcuts to their respective application program?

Hi everyone, I recently setup an FTP server using this genius little piece of hardware called CloudFTP (now called iUSBport as of today, LOL).

Anyways, I can access my CloudFTP just fine through my smartphone, using a file explorer app w/FTP ability.

My question is, is there a downloadable Windows 7 file explorer freeware/software app that can do exact the same thing as my Android? Currently, I am only able to access the CloudFTP via Windows through the Google Chrome browser, but the interface is.... dismal, to say the least.

Hi, I'm new to Vista and a few things are bothering me at the moment:

1) If I set my current folder to "list" view and then go and "apply current settings to all folders"... in XP this would do just that: put every single folder on all my disks in "list view" by default. Unfortunately, Vista still seems to try to display what it considers "media folders" as "tile view" until I manually change each one to "list" view. Do I have any way to set them all to list as I intend?

2) When I turn on the "status bar" in flie explorer, it does indeed show the status bar, and if I click on a file it will show the size of that file in the status bar. In XP however, if no file was selected it would show the combined size of all the files in the folder, and if I selected a specific group of files it would also show their combined filesize. Neither of these seem to show up on the status bar in Vista.

3) Is there any way to prevent folders from "lighting up" as you move the mouse over them? I would call this "pre-select highlight" after a similarly named (and similarly disliked) feature in a CAD program I use.

4) This one is kind of stupid, but sometimes due to all my external drives, I like to have a long (tall) but narrow vertical window, where the folder names just fill up the width. Hi

Preface - first post, and I am fairly sophisticated computer user.

I double clicked an exe file by mistake the other day and now I have Internet Explorer popping up with random pages every now and then.
I never operate the computer as an administrator unless I have to, and I was operating under normal user credentials when I executed the above mentioned file.
To prevent the problem from occurring I have denied access to <C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe> to the user in question.

I've run full scans with "Spybot Search & Destroy", "Spyare Blaster". Clamwin and Trend Micro HouseCall are running now.
Appreciate I am slightly out of date with malware removal techniques - the last time I had a problem it was 6 years ago and the first two were state-of-the-art methods.

Kindly advice how to proceed as I am slightly lost.

Microsoft today rolled out a massive update for Windows 10 preview builds and in addition to a plethora of new features, the company also introduced a completely new icon for File Explorer.

The default file manager on Windows 10 PCs, File Explorer has been around for many years (it was previously known as Windows Explorer), but its looks and features have barely changed in the latest Windows versions.

Users, however, are still hoping for a bigger overhaul of the app and one of the main requests is support for tabs that would make it easier to work with multiple folders in a single window.

New almost-monochrome icon
In the meantime, Microsoft is working on making File Explorer better match the looks of Windows 10, so the company introduced a new icon that follows the monochrome design language used for the other icons in the operating system.

?You will notice a little bit of color still present in the icon. The design team was a bit hesitant to completely let go of the yellow because it has become such a familiar part of the File Explorer branding,? Gabe Aul, head of the Windows Insider program, explained.

?They explored a variety of different ways to keep the yellow and still match the cleanliness of the black and white Windows app icons. The new icon you see in this build is where the design team landed that is closer to monochrome, but still has the familiar shape that users recognize, and has a nod to the yellow that you see all throughout File Explorer. I'm using Win7 Home Premium 64-bit, and I'm using the program Expressit 3.1 to create my CD labels.

I downloaded it from here:
exPressit SE - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com

Now, the files it creates, of which I have several made using its previous version, 3.0, are suffixed .exp. I have set my Win7 installation so that ExpressIt is the default program to open these files. Double-clicking an .exp file should therefore open that CD label in the ExpressIt program.

However, when I double-click an .exp file, the ExpressIt program does not open so that I can work with the file. If I run the ExpressIt program first, then 'Open' the file from within the program, it all works fine. (The problem with this 'workaround' is that when going to Open the file, its default directory is nowhere near the directories containing my .exp files and takes ages to browse to, so I don't want to do it like that).

So, is there some sort of setting I have missed out that prevents the program running when I double-click the .exp file icons? Or is there a tweak I can use?

A:Running a default program by double-clicking file icon

When you selecz the default program use the browse button to locate any other .exe files in the expressit directory, and see if it works.
I can be the problem, that the .exe that you have associated the file extensio with is just an app laucnher exe and not the main software, which can hadle the files.

This has stumped me so good I actually signed up to a forum... Hey guys..

Long story short.. "Show Libraries" refuses to work in File Explorer

I've done this.. And it doesn't do anything. It doesn't even leave a check or anything.

I've done this.. And while it leaves a check showing it's "working".. It still isn't showing my libraries

I've also done this.. It checks, I hit apply, ok to close the box and nope.. If I re-open the folder options again the box is unchecked.

The only way in File Explorer I can get it to show my libraries is use "Show All Folders".. Which I don't want to do.

The strangest part is.. In the OPEN Dialog (the dialog that opens if you want to browse files to upload to say, imgur).. It works as it should..

I've done a sfc /scannow and it comes out clean.. I have no idea how File Explorer got so corrupt. Windows updates are all current, etc..

I tried searching for this but didn't find anything. Apologies if I get my Windows terminology incorrect, I'm using the Japanese version of XP Pro (but am more familiar with English) so system text is in Japanese so I have to translate it by memory from when I last used English Windows or literally translate the Japanese term.

After having to do a repair install, all my file associations were reset. But when I right-click on an affected file and select "Program Opens With" (or go into its Properties then click on "change" under File Associations) and manually search for the program, I can select the program in the Open dialog box but once it's selected and I hit OK, it's not in the list of programs that Windows will allow me to choose for the File Association.

I also tried going into the options of two different programs (IrfanView, Media Player Classic) so I could just have the program change the file associations, but this didn't work either.

Any ideas? Reinstalling the relevant programs might work, but not all programs give you the option of changing their file associations when you install them...

I have an issue with copying or moving files between folders in Windows Explorer using Home Premium 7. I installed Windows 7 a year ago and faced this issue. I got rid of it, but don?t recall how. In the last few days, it has returned----I don?t know why.

When I grab a file with the mouse and drag it to the left to another folder, an icon appears on top of that file. The icon is totally unnecessary and obscures my view of the destination folder. This often causes the file to drop into the wrong folder. The icon changes depending on the type of file being moved.

In the screenshot below, I am attempting to drag a Word file from the right side of Explorer to another folder on the left side. Notice the postage stamp-sized ?Word? icon with the large ?W? that covers up portions of the directory tree.

How do I get rid of that completely pointless icon?

I thought it was some setting in folder view options, but I have played with those settings to no effect.

Help??!!??

A:File drag and drop in Explorer obscured by icon

It is actually a good feature. It tells you which folder it will be dropping thr file into.

By your picture if you released it at that point it would drop it in the temp folder.
You align the mouse to show folder name you want to drop it into.

Drop it misaligned as XP use to be and it could go in the folder you want or in the folder on either side. Or even drop between folders.

A:Replacement hard drive showing wrong capacity in File Explorer

This is normal after a cloning. The partition needs to be expanded. If you look in disk management is there a partition after your Windows C: partition? If there is then you will need to use a third party partition manager to first move the partition after C: and then expand C:.

Partition Wizard can do the job. All steps are virtual and will not complete until Apply is clicked. This lets you back out of any steps if a mistake is made.

If there is no partition after C: you can expand it in Disk Management by right clicking C: and selecting Extend Volume.

I successfully swapped over all the peripherals from my old laptop unit (screen, drives, Wi-Fi, battery, etc.) and the laptop started up normally, with no problems.

While not a problem, I just now noticed that on Windows Explorer, under [file] Name column, I see that for everyone of the files listed, there a very small "green checkmark" or a "yellow exclamation mark" in the lower right-hand corner of the symbol that designates the file type (Word, Excel, PDF, etc.). I've never seen that under Windows Explorer before, working this laptop - or any computer for that matter.

How to force Windows 7 File Explorer to display ALL audio folder content as normal files in detailed view with file name/size/date and without title/artist/album.

A:How to display all audio file folders in detailed file view

Hello Robilong,

If the audio folders all have the Music folder template, then you could use Apply to All Folders to set on these folders the way you like it with details view and have it applied to all "Music" folders.

Hope this helps,

Hi,
AVG recently detected and fixed a malware problem, but now whenever I try to open something, I get an "Open with" box that says "Choose the program you want to use to open this file". This happens with everything I try to open. Firefox, AVG, explorer.exe, etc.
I have no idea how to go about fixing this, so any help is greatly appriciated.
Thanks.

Not sure if it's needed for this problem, but here's the system info.

Hi everyone.

Got a problem with a users laptop.

When I start the laptop everything is fine. The novell log on screen appears. I type in the username and password and click ok. The users background appears but then nothing else. I can Ctrl + Alt + Del and run task manager.

Explorer is not running which I assumed was my problem. I have tried to run explorer by going to file, then new task, but after typing in explorer.exe and clicking ok (to run the program) the following error message appears:

'This file does not have a program asociated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel.'

Any idea's what has causd it or what I should do? I would do what the error message says but because I can't access anything other than task manager I can't go to control panel etc...

Many thanks everyone. I thought it was going to be as simple as running explorer.exe but obviously not

Hi,

I am having a variety of issues with my pc but so far the only consistent error I have is when trying to run explorer I get the message 'Another program is currently using this file'.

If I try to run explorer during the pc start up it works but once the pc has fully started it never works. Sometimes this error applies to other applications as well (e.g. if I try to open 2 versions of Firefox it sometimes errors).

I have tried various spyware / malware products suggested in this forum but to be honest I am thrashing about in the dark. Any suggestions of how to proceed would be gratefully received.

Thanks.

I'm using the ALT+ENTER keyboard shortcut to make an application become fullscreen. When windowed, the application is on my secondary display (a TV connected using HDMI), but when fullscreen, it's on the main display (my PC monitor).

Is there any way of forcing the program to go fullscreen on the display it's currently on, or to a specific display?

A:Making program fullscreen opens in wrong display

It should always open on the screen you had it on last. Drag it to whatever display you want to view it on and close it, it should always open on that display. At least until you disconnect that display.

I'm using Windows Vista updated within the past 4-5 days.

A couple of days ago AVGFree stopped a virus (it indicated the name was not known) from downloading to my computer. It moved it to the vault and strongly recommended I reboot to remove all traces of the virus. I did so but experienced a problem on the reboot. When the desktop appeared everything was placed where it was supposed to be with some exceptions.

1. The sidebar and all gadgets did not appear.
2. Not all of the icons in the task bar appeared.
3. When clicking on any icons a window opens and asks 'Open with'

I was able to run a virus scan with only two trojans appearing in the sun\java folder (fakeAV). Both files were removed by AVGFree. I rebooted and the same happens.

I tried running System Restore a couple of times and received a message that there were no restore points. On the 4th or 5th attempt there was a restore point, I used it with no difference.

I also tried using the Startup Repair utility with no problems showing.
Could it be possible that when AVGFree removed the virus it also removed some important files that Windows needs to finish the startup process? Or is there something more insidious going on?

Any help would be appreciated.

How can I view a PDF file and an Excel file on the screen at the same same time? Every time I open a PDF file, everything shuts down, excel for the PDF. Whenever I click off the PFD, I see everything else, but the PDF is gone. I'm trying to get some info from the PDF to Excel, but it's really hard to do this in Widows 8. Here is my problem: when I open Internet Explorer, it opens to the correct home page, which is the google search page. If I search for something, it takes me to the list of website. But then if I click on one of those links, it takes me to a different site. If I copy and paste the address directly into the address bar, it will go to the right website. I have run my antivirus software (Trend Micro Antivirus) and I have run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. They found some bad things and deleted them, but the problem is the same. I have downloaded spybot, but when I tried to run it, it wouldn't open. I don't know what to do at this point, so I thought I'd try here. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm not positive exactly what I did, but I can no longer open locations through "Open file location" or "Find location" dialogs. To clarify, there are no errors or notifications of any kind, just a momentary busy curson and then nothing.

If I use the searchbar in explorer to do a search, right click on a file and choose "Open file location", explorer jumps to that location without any trouble, but I cannot open download locations in Firefox, or any other related application. I believe the problem may be related to my changing the target of explorer from "libraries" to "My Computer" using the following instructions from http://www.thewindowsplanet.com/1162/stop-explorer-showing-libraries-launched-taskbar.htm:

To change it to open to “My Computer”, change the shortcut to:
%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe ::{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}

I reverted the shortcut back to %Systemroot%\explorer.exe after noticing problems (and it now opens the libraries again), but now I cannot open directories.

I have also tried all the instructions from:
http://forums.techguy.org/windows-vista/917805-solved-cannot-open-file-location.html
Please help.

Hello, hope this is the right place. But for some reason all my winrar archive started showing as a white piece of paper with the top right hand corner folded in, and in the middle the winrar archive icon shows. Ive never had a problem like this before and was wondering how do i fix this problem back up so it shows the winrar icon not with a white piece of paper behind it. Ive got AVG Antivurs Free version edition 9 and I've got malwarebytes anti malware, so i have no idea what could be causing the problem. I have attached a screenshot of what i mean. Note:I have already tried file association and associating it to a different file and then re associating it. Also have tried uninstalling winrar and then installing it again. Thank you Much appreciated Dazz

A:File icon incorrect file association correct

Click Start, Run, Regedit.

Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes and scroll down until you find RAR or WinRar (Not sure as I don't have it); whichever it is, it should show the (default) entry as RaR File (you could also use Find > RAR File).

It should also have a subkey of DefaultIcon. Click on this and it'll show the path where it gets the icon from. The last number in the path, after5 the comma, is the icon selected from that file. The normal path should be pointing to the Winrar.exe file, and the number something other than 0.

Export the key first, just in case you need to restore it, and change the number to 0. Should change the icon shown for Winrar archive to the main one.

If not, report back on anything that deviates from the above, including a screenshot of the registry keys.

Hi guys1
I'm about to create a .reg file that will set path in registry to my own icon for specific file extensions. E.g. I want my own icon as a default icon for .ini extension. And not only for one extension but for more of them, in a single .reg file. As always I don't want to mess it up,so I'm looking for some basic assistance on how to fill a notepad. And I know this is the best place to look at

P.S. I do use a Default Program Editor and File Types Manager, but I wanted a single .reg that will do the job for multiple modifications in a single click, something like backup of icon-registry-modifications, as I like to format my PC every year to ensure clean working environment. Setting things up de novo is a lot of fun but time consuming... I made a backup of registry and a Restore Point, just in case.

For any idea, thanks in advance!!

A:.reg file to set default icon for specific file extensions

Hi,

If changing the icon worked with the tools you mention, use Process Monitor or Regshot to track down specific changes in the registry for .ini that change the icon. Then create similar registry entries for other extensions in your REG-file.

Task Scheduler. Create a new/basic task. You can invoke your batch script there. This can occur after boot completes, after user logon, etc. You can set it to run daily weekly hourly, etc. You can even have it delay X (preseleted time amounts) minutes/hours after boot/logon if you want.

I've been doing a lot of tidying up of my file types and associations, and one of the things that I have done is to ensure that all my most used file types have meaningful and accurate "friendly names". So, instead Explorer referring to .wv files as "WV File" it now says "WavPack Audio File". I've done this for numerous file types and it has all worked well and is correctly displayed in Explorer.

However, I also use Windows Libraries, and for some reason it is still using generic file descriptions, or older ones that I chose myself and subsequently updated.

I have done the usual things of clearing the icon cache and all other cache and temp storage. I've also completely rebuilt the index of the Library in question. I have even removed all folders from that library and deleted the top level library itself (then, after a reboot, recreated it by selecting 'Restore Default Libraries'), but as soon as I add my folder to the Library, the same old file names show up again.

I have done a thorough search of my Registry and some of the terms being displayed by the Library are nowhere to be found in the Registry (because I have updated every possible instance of the file type name) so it must be cached somewhere, unless its buried in some indecipherable format in the Registry that doesn't show up in search results.

If I click an incorrectly named 'file types' group in the Library, and then choose 'Open Folder Location' to look at the same files direct... Read more

A:Windows Explorer "Libraries" displaying wrong File Type names

This could have something to do with your user files. Are you the Administrator of this computer & do you only have one user account?.

Click on Computer & then click on your main OS drive which is normally C:\, then click Users, which should show your user name as one of the folders. Click on that & select your Documents files & see if the new names are listed there, if so you can create a New Library by clicking on Include in Library, from the menu at the top, & selecting Create New Library.

If all the Documents are correct as mentioned above you could copy all the Documents into the New library & then after checking everything is correct you can delete the old library.

If you have more that one user account, it's possible that all the changes are being made on one account & you are then trying to access them on another account, so you keep getting the old arrangement.
