Other volume bars control the main volume of windows xp

Q: Other volume bars control the main volume of windows xp

ok so this problem was just about from the beginning. i thought i would be patient and it would go away. at first i noticed that while using msn messenger, its volume control for voice chat controled the main volume for the whole pc. so if it was low things wouldnt sound as high as i wanted. no matter if i adjusted the main volume in the control panel, which was always set to highest, the volume would still be at the mercy of Msn M. so if it was lower than usual i would have to sign into msn m and adjust it. not only does this happen with msn m. it also happens with web video applications used by youtube, livevideo, etc etc! those arent usually the culprit of low sound. its usually just msn m. even now with live messenger i have the issue. im tired of being patient so here i am

windows xp sp2
1.8ghz
2gig ram.
anything else? sound card? the sound card came with the mobo. its a Realtek AC'97.
thanks for any help.

Hello :)
I hope I put this in the right area..

I've been searching for a solution to this volume problem for a while now, but to no avail. I've found others with a similar problem, but no solution. So here's the deal: I just got a new motherboard, and ever since I got it my volume control has been faulty. First of all, all sounds are very quiet, even when all volume sliders are set to maximum. Next the main volme control has no effect whatsoever on the volume of the computer. I can can slide it all the way to the top, or all the way to the bottom, nothing changes. The only thing that makes any difference is the Wave control and it barely does anything. Also, when I put "Mute all"...it doesn't mute. However when I put mute for Wave control, no sound comes out.
All this is incredibly annoying because I often listen to music on my computer, but now I basically can't hear it. To note: I don't have a volume control on my keyboard, or on my speakers, and I know nothing is wrong with the speakers.

If anyone could help, I would really, really appreciate it. Thanks :)

Are your speakers powered? If not you may have to invest in powered

Do you have any other soundcard-like devices like a USB headset?
Do you have the latest drivers for your soundcard installed? Please check the motherboard maker's website.
Did you get some special program with the motherboard drivers that would give you more control over sound than the Windows standard volume utility?

Something funny happened to my computer a couple days ago. The volume control in the taskbar is missing. The Vista volume control allows you to adjust individual volume settings for different applications, such as for Firefox, Media Player, etc. It's just not there at all. I looked in the controlpanel and found the Icon for Sound, but I see nothing as far as "place volume icon in taskbar"I have an HP Pavilion DV5 notebook computer. As you can see in the photo below, Volume is only on the clip meter for SPDIF (digital out via HP DOCK) whatever that is. No volume on the other clip meters. I believe this to be the problem. If they are right-clicked, they areboth marked as "enabled".I just marked the first icon as default and still no sound.

A:Vista main volume control missing

Alright, so you've somehow changed from the speakers/headphone jack to the digital out.
It's a fairly simple fix thankfully.

1 - in that panel you have, click on "Speakers and Dual Headphones" (the top item)
2 - Click "Set Default".
3 - Click OK

then you should be able to change tings again.

I'm running Windows XP SP2 and I have all my sound drivers installed (I can get sound just fine in every app), but I can't control the main volume in the Volume Control. I can adjust the volume with the Wave slider, but the main one doesn't do anything, including mute. Individual applications' volume controls work fine too, just not the main Windows one. It wouldn't be a problem, but it might be the reason why I'm not getting any volume on the Stereo Mix recording option. I just finished a clean install of XP (for a different reason) and it wasn't working before, either. Any ideas?

The machine is a THINKPAD R31, running XP.

A few days ago, I "lost" the volume level bars that should appear on the screen when I press one of the 3 physical buttons (with symbols meaning Volume down, Volume Up and Mute) beside the "Thinkpad" button on the machine.

I fear I may have accidentally deleted something.

Does anyone know of an easy remedy?

Many thanks, in anticipation.

Short Story
Wave meter in volume control keeps stopping. I googled it, seems to be a virus. Performed a virus scan, came up with nothing. Did it with another anti-virus program, also showed nothing. Need help. Thanks.

Long Story
So basically, I wanted to watch a youtube video. When I played it, there was no sound. Thinking it was a simple volume problem, I checked the video volume, the small icon on the taskbar, and even went into the control panel to adjust the volume settings. I thought it might be my headphones, but I tried using the speakers and neither worked. I tried doing the voice playback, and then I could hear my voice. I thought maybe it was fixed. Played the video, no sound. At that point I thought it was my sound card. I didn't want to replace it, so I kept trying to look for a better solution. After much frustration, I managed to make my way into the volume control. Start - Control Panel - Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices - Adjust the System Volume - Audio - Sound Playback: Default Device: SoundMAX Digital Audio - Volume - Wave. I saw that the Wave option was all the way down, and moved it up. After moving it, I could hear the video crystal clear, so I closed all the windows I didn't need anymore. Well, after about 30 seconds, the volume shut off again. I went back into volume control, and the wave bar was all the way down again. I raised it, and closed the window. I was looking for the apply button to become available, for I had assumed that not app... Read more

mmmm....actually i've had a very similiar problem....not quite sure how i fixed it though. Try updating your drivers for your soundcard, that might help. Also(obviously) go into control panel, and mess with things from there. Also, do you have any errors with any sound drivers of any kind? i know if....kind of nuke some of mine(stupid me) with an anti-adware program....if you have that could be part of the prob, and those usually aren't to hard to fix, just take a little time.

I'm not sure if this happened with 5.55, but with 5.56, when I hit the volume up or down on my keyboard to turn the sound down for everything, it turns down winamp's volume bar too. Sometimes I can move winamp's volume bar up and down and it won't even be working. What causes this? Hi everyone,

I noticed the volume of my music was not as loud as it was in the past when playing CD's or MP3 files with Windows Media Player 10. I had the volume turned all the way up in Media player and also in Realtek HD Audio Manager, but the sound was just not anywhere near as loud as it was before. I recently un-installed "Discover stream hub / Discover.exe" and thought that this might have had something to do with it, but that does not seem to be the case.

I decided to try to play an mp3 file with Realplayer and found that with the volume turned up in realplayer, the mp3 files sounded normal again, plenty of volume.

What surprised me is that if I close Realplayer with it's volume control turned up, then open the MP3 with Medial player, it will sound normal in media player, (plenty of volume). If I turn the volume control in Real player all the way down, close it, then play a file with Media Player, there will be no sound at all.

Somehow, the volume control for Realplayer is effecting and overriding the volume control for Media Player. Can anyone offer any suggestions as to how this might be happening ? Has anyone else ever experienced this type of thing ?

It's not a big deal now that I found out what was going on, but tracking down problems like this can drive you nuts. It seems crazy that the volume control from one program would control the other, I'm just wondering what might be going on. I'm using Windows XP Media Center Ed... Read more

A:Real Player volume control also controls Media Player Volume ?

Hi John

The reason that this happens is that when you change the volume in real player, it changes the 'Wave' volume for the whole system. I don't pretend to know too much about this but basically, real player changes part of the system volume which also affects the volume in media player. To see this for yourself, open Real Player and then go into Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices under control panel. Click on Advanced Volume Controls under the 'See Also' heading on the left. There should be a column labelled 'Wave'. If you now change the volume in Real Player, you will see this changing also. As a result, it changes the volume system wide. Hope this solves your confusion.

I have a BenQ Q-tpye rpo x730 wireless desktop companion pro keyboard and mouse set. My mouse is working with no issues, but when it come to my keyboard- thats another story. It has a volume control knob on it and when you use it it would display volume up , down, or mute depending on what you were doing along with green bars. Also when you would push the cap lock, or num locks keeps it would read which keep was pressed (also in green). I know that this "extra" function came with my keyboard and mouse software, but I started having and issue with it. The mouse side works properly but on the keyboard it has extra keys for web/home page, shopping, search, favorites, foward, backward, play, pause, etc. None of these keys will work either. A:Volume Bars Messed Up...

Hi Iron Smile.Volume bars show because you have installed an additional program that displays this. You will need to identify this program or driver and reinstall it. These types of add-on programs are very fragile and regularly break. You are better off without it unless you like to keep reinstalling the same program over and over again. Just a guess: Did you install a program or driver for your keyboard ? This could be the one.

I believe this is being posted in the proper topic.

I'm running Windows XP Media Center Edition on a HP Pavilion a1630n.

I've started taking an interest in security and done some work making my computer safe. However, today I lost the green volume indicator bars that used to come up when I adjusted the speaker volume from my keyboard.

On a HP laptop it is a software program called Quick Touch that handles this duty but I can't seem to find a comparable program for my operating system and model of computer.

A:Missing On-Screen Volume Indicator Bars

This is not likely tied to your efforts into security. If it is relivant, you still need a workaround.

Diffrent programs render things in diffrent ways. Video and sound do not often compete.

If a client based program(config bad) is not effecting your screen(can't fix it), it's probably time to uninstall the driver.

Try this:
Obtain the current driver set for your device.
Uninstall everything(program wear in Add/Remove..) related to your product. !!Don't Reboot!!

Remove the device from "Device Manager", selecting the "delete driver" option in the prompts.

Use your archived source to install a new driver environment.
Reinstall the programs that allow you acces to the device(profile programs)

Let me know how it comes out.

My Windows 7 was installed in Drive C: in Primary partition.

I only have another drive D:, which is also a Primary partition and 200GB in size.

I need to create another drive. So, I use 'Shrink Volume' on Drive D: and free 30GB.

Then 30GB become free space and when I right click on that, I choose to 'Simple Volume' and then format it as NTFS and assign the drive letter E:. All of a sudden after I did that, all the partitions(C: and D now no longer say "Primary Partition". The blue color on top of the partitions also changed to a yellow/brownish color. My guess is that they have been converted to a Simple Volume too.

Well, then I just restart my PC and astonished that my windows 7 can't load. Only a blank screen come ahead to me. No error message given.

I use my Windows 7 DVD and in repair windows section, I use command line and by 'diskpart', i found, my all partition (C: and D: and E present their and there file system is: 'NTFS' and Type is "Simple". No drive there marked as a 'System' or 'boot'.

What should I do now, to recover my Windows 7?

Give this a try and you have to have the Windows install software for the computer for this procedure or it will not work. It is a non-destructive procedure and will not hurt the date but I recommend backing up all of your important data anyway to another media like DC-R's, DVD or thumb drive first. And you might have to re-install any service packs, Drivers, and Windows Updates.

I've recently encountered a bizarre problem on my XP Professional machine. When I click on the volume control button near the clock, my computer will freeze and won't respond to anything but the restart button. I have no idea what could be causing this. I've scanned my comp with Norton as well as AdAware and SpyBot, hoping that viruses or spyware could be the issue, but I had no luck. Trying a system restore wasn't able to fix the problem either.

Other problems with freezes occur in Trillian, Winamp and Windows Media Player, but these seem random, not every time I start the programs. All these symptoms appeared at the same time, so I'm assuming they're somehow related. I've tried switching to Winamp 5.3 for mp3 files and video files, but the freezes still occur. The problem with video files extends even to looking at their thumbnails, which sometimes causes my computer to freeze as well...

Any help anyone could offer would be greatly appreciated.

When I select the Volume Control from the toolbar, or Adjust System Volume from the Control Panel, I usually get two sliders: one for Device - Speakers and one for Applications - Windows Sounds. Sometimes however, apparently at random, I get three sliders; for example when iTunes is active I get a third slider for it.

Recently I got a third slider for Windows Mail, which was handy because at that time I happened to want the Mail notification to be quieter than other sounds, so I pushed that slider down to halfway. That made Windows Mail very quiet, which was just what I wanted on that day.

My problem is, I would like to restore the volume of my Windows Mail notification to its former level, but I can't make that third slider reappear. Can anyone suggest where I can find it?

Hi all,

Just joined up....
What I want is actually the opposite of what most people are looking for.
I want to install windows 8 on my kids computer but want the volume level to be set at a certain level so the sound is not to high no matter what they do.

I am able to achieve this right now as the desktop is on XP and i have the wave bar set to a certain level so no matter how high they put the volume bar it just stays at a certain level.I have hidden the wave bar so they cannot even get at it by mistake.

The main thing is that I am using a sidewinder X4 keyboard which has the vol+/- so they can easily increase the volume even if I hide the volume tab from the desktop in windows 8, while in XP it remained a certain lvel even if they put it upto 100%.

I have been searching for win 8 mixers where I could maybe have the same type of control as the XP but so far have found nothing.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated and used

I'd access it by selecting the ^ to the left of the time and date on the bottom right hand side of the screen. But a few days ago, it was missing. I then clicked Customize, then Turn system icons on or off. The On/Off selection for the volume control
was greyed out yesterday, so I could not turn it on. Have no idea how it got turned off. Today, the On/Off drop down can be accessed, and I closed that screen and noticed the volume control is there again - between the Wi-Fi signal strength icon and Norton
Security. I'm no longer having trouble but I do wonder how/why did the volume icon get removed, and why was I not able to turn it back on? I don't recall changing any related settings or accessing Control Panel.

Problem: when i play songs or watch videos or do anything that deals with the sound, the wave slider in the volume control will automatically jump from the high volume that i set it at to mute.

I have checked out the properties and volume control properties and still can't find a way for it to stay un-mute.

My volume control is the SoundMax Digital Audio driver...
i checked the hardware and it says it working properly and i can hear the sounds but only for some time, before the wave volume automatically jumps to mute...

this is getting annoying....

Any one have a solution to keep my wave volume from muting it self permanently...

Please Respond ASAP

A:Windows Xp Volume Control With Wave Slider

Hmmm...you might try using the native XP volume icon, rather than Sound Max.

I have SM on my system but I don't bother to use, I see no advantage to using the XP volume control (I did try the Sound Max control for a period of time) and any program I use for music file playback will have it's own volume controls.

Could be possible file corruption...I might try uninstalling/reinstalling the drivers which load Sound Max (if I really wanted to use it).

One thing to remember about Device Manager...it has no way (that I know of) to distinguish/inform the user...if a file is corrupt or not.

I am using Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2.

Long Story:
The for a long period of time the left channel of my audio output was not working. I attributed this to a problem with the 3.5 mm output jacks, because after the front jack stopped giving left channel I moved to the rear jack until that one broke as well. I recently opened up the case, blew out a lot of dust, and poked the jacks a little with a screwdriver. This brought back left channel in the front jack, and partially fixed the rear. (If I inserted the male end of the jack only half-way in I could get both channels.)

I then noticed that the balances were all screwed up. I use a 2.1 speaker setup, and found that I could only get the bass working if I inserted the male jack halfway in to the input on the woofer, similiar to my problem with the rear output of my case and the left channel. Now that bass was returned it still sounded squeaky and/or muffled. I discovered that if I moved the Wave balance all the way to the left in the windows Volume Control panel it would sound normal. It would also sound odd if I had the Main Volume balance to the right at all.

Short Story:
However, whenever I play a new song or adjust the volume in an external program (such as WinAmp or RealPlayer) the balance is centered in the Windows Volume Control panel.Click to expand...

My computer has Realtek HD audio. In my previous installation of windows 7, the tray volume icon would show several audio outputs at once. For example, if I clicked the volume icon it would have have a volume control for the Speakers (rear audio out), the headphones (front audio out), and the HDMI audio that my GTX460 sends. Now, I can only get one of them to show at a time. What's going on?

A:Fresh install, now multiple volume bars don't show in mixer

Figured it out. Stupid me.

For others, right click the volume icon, choose volume control options, and then check off whichever outputs you want to show.

For some reason, windows media player will not let me adjust the volume setting on some videos, whereas some others are fine. Initially, I thought it was a codec problem but according to G-spot and avicodec, I have them, and it doesn't appear to be any specific audio codec in general.

Hi .

I am new here. For the past few weeks I have been having problems with my taskbar. It keeps crashing whenever I use the volume control located externally on my laptop(increasing or decreasing the volume). It randomly happens. I am currently running AVG antivirus. I scan the computer everyday with it. Also used the Windows Live OneCare scanner from Microsoft website. All scans show up clean. I try to close the explorer.exe from the task manager and restart it but the problem stays till i restart my computer again. I ran a DDS scan and these are the results from it. My Firefox works fine. I do not know if its a malware causing this. I dont have any unnecessary popups either. I also heard about combofix but not sure if i need to use it.

Any ideas anybody??

Syed

Also when i restart the explorer again the sound icon disappears from the taskbar, and i also updated my audio driver software from my laptop manufacturer website and the problem still persists.

My speaker setup seems to make windows think that all my speakers are 'left'. I dont mind that it does, but the problem is that i will be missing out on all the action coming out of the sopposed 'right' speaker.

The Volume balance control sliders that you can access from Sound > Speaker Properties > Levels > Balance only control the volumes that each individual speaker has.

Is there a slider, windows function or program that can shift both the output from the left and right speakers, to the left speaker, so that nothing will be missed .

Many thanks,
SuperStinger

Hi everybody,

I am running Windows Vista SP1 on a new Dell computer, and have Windows Media Player 11 installed. The problem is with the volume control and it seems pretty strange. The volume control only works on WMV files. If I play any wmv file, I can control the volume, moving the slider, or I can completely mute the sound. However, with any other type of file (avi, mpeg), the volume is always at its maximum and moving the slider left or right doesn't do a thing. Pressing mute doesn't work either.

I am getting sound from a digital audio output on my sound card (Auzentech) and it goes to a DD 5.1 receiver.

I've searched the web, including Microsoft, and couldn't find anything related. Does anyone have any ideas what might be causing this?

Thanks!

Recently I went through a day of torture by an unsuccessful attempt to System Restore. I lost a display driver from some inadvertent deletion in either Sytem Mechanic or some other registry cleanup program. I tried several solutions, then, perhaps prematurely, reinstalled Windows XP Pro. Experiencing further difficulties, I then reinstalled Service Pack 1, which fixed the display problem pretty much. BUT... some sound problems developed:

a) I was no longer able to locate any volume or play control. I found an article in the Windows Knowledge Base that told me how to install the play control panel through the command prompt from my XP Pro disk. This fixed this problem... But...

b) While I can now control the volume through the sys tray icon and the play control panel, I no longer have this function on my keyboard! I reinstalled the keyboard software from a download site, and the keyboard's shortcut button functions all work BUT NOT the volume control. The mute button works fine, but NOT the volume control buttons (the - and + buttons). They were working fine previous to my reinstalling Windows. I fear that some registry file or setting needs fixing.

c) Lately I have discovered a final and third problem. There is no sound recorder in my files! I find NO sound recorder in my Start/Programs/Accessories/Entertainment section, nor anything like this by conducting a file search. It seems that this recorder didn't get installed when I reinstalled Windows. Is there a file... Read more

A:No Sound Recorder in Windows XP and Can't Use Volume Control on Keyboard!

Check Device manager and particularly the Keyboard and Sound items. If either have yellow marks or don't agree with what you know to be the correct item, delete all of the listings and ask for a new detection, as you can do there.

Even if there are no apparent problems shown there, delete those two items anyway, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Windows will pick them up again and perhaps you'll get lucky.

Beyond that, be certain that you are supplying the correct drivers for the enhanced keyboard that you apparently have and if you have sound card drivers, supply those instead of letting Windows do a default selection for you. Normally XP does well that way, but you're evidently not a normal case.

Good luck.

Hello again...

[Sorry to post back-to-back...but I need some answers on this one, also...& it's sort of related to the first...in that, I want to accomplish this prior to an SP3 install.]

So...

My (recently new) audio workstation...mfg.'d by ADK...came w/ Paragon Drive Backup (8.1)...which I can utilize to backup my entire local drive content (OS/programs/files & folders) to a dedicated recovery capsule...(which I believe is located on a dedicated partition).

What I would like to do...(because I have 2 external hard drives, capable of backing up everything I have)...is:

1st; ELIMINATE that recovery capsule.

Then...I would like to recover that partition to the volume...so as to add it's space to the available, writable area of the entire local drive (i.e., only have one main partition). [I do have the XP bible (Bott & Seichert)...& I suppose the sequence is detailed in there somewhere...but I thought also that someone here migh have some practical experience w/ this task.]

Then...I want to back up my entire local drive to one of my external drives (since I am going to install SP3...& a complete back-up is recommended prior). [This... I believe I already know how to do...since it is listed as one of the main options on the mail Paragon interface.]

Thanks,

I've had this problem with Windows Vista Ultimate 64, Windows 7 64 7077, and Windows 7 64 7100.

Basically, the volume starts out at normal level, then all the sudden it will be real quiet. It stays quiet and no matter what settings I adjust, I cannot get it to play louder again. I would really like to disable all of the volume controls in windows and run Bit Perfect audio....

Sound Card: Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Gamer
Audio Rig: B&K 7270, Emotiva DMC-1, Polk LSI-25

That amp is putting out nearly 400 wpc (weighing nearly 100lbs O_O) to each speaker... My normal listening volume is -46 db (on my DMC-1)... now I have to put it on -17Db to get the same listening level. Something is wrong, and it's definitely the settings in windows.

I noticed the change immediately while I was listening and accidentally adjusted the bass settings in windows sound settings, the sound level fell instantly, and never returned...

any ideas?

*****Currently working***** Any ideas on the Bit Perfect audio?

I recently bought a dell computer second-hand from my friend, who had XP installed on it. It came with a subwoofer and a set of 4 regular speakers. On it, he had installed a form of creative volume control in addition to windows volume. The way it worked was he had the windows volume set to 100% at all times, and the creative volume control around 3% for regular browsing, 10-25% for gaming and 50% or higher for rocking out with music. I recently acquired windows 7 home premium x64 and upgraded my operating system. My soundblaster card has all the necessary drivers and the audio is all hooked up properly, and the only thing missing is this form of volume control. After looking around for the old software and trying a few different freeware and shareware programs, nothing has pulled through for me; any suggestions?

A:Creative sound card, windows 7 compatible volume control?

What exact sound card do you have?

Have you checked creative's website for additional software that goes along with the driver of your card? Is the windows volume not sufficient for you, or do you just want the extra ability for volume control?

If you installed the creative driver, have you checked in the audio control panel that's built into the driver?

Hi,
Recently I worked with Spybot Search & Destroy forum support to remove a nasty malware problem that was causing ad pop-ups to come up randomly and also turn down my volume control to zero. That problem has gone away and everything was working fine. The support person then had me do some final cleanup and other suggestions to stop future infections. Somewhere in this process the volume control icon disappeared from my system tray. I can still look up the volume control in the Control Panel and it says that it is there using Sigma Tel audio. The check mark is in place that says that the volume control should appear in the system tray. Also, I can play music on iTunes but if I try to open up an mp3 file in Windows Media Player it says that I am missing the CODEC to run this file. Some online radio stations that I listen to that have their own on-site player do not work anymore. One site that still works in WMP first says it is downloading CODECs before it begins playing. I also noticed that when I boot up the Microsoft boot-up sound no longer plays. I figure I'm missing the main file that contains the Microsoft CODECs, but hopefully you can help with this.
Thanks,
Bill

Hi,

I am running windows XP on a Dell Inspiron Mini and have internet explorer popups coming up in the background. Sometimes there are ads with audio messages. Sometimes the sound mutes (wave volume mutes). I tried reinstalling the operating system, which did not work multiple times, until it finally succeeded (I am not sure why it finally succeeded). Even after this reinstallation (which seemed to delete most files from the hard drive) the popups and other antics continued. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Norton Antivirus aren't detecting anything. I ran DDS and GMER as per instructions prior to posting. GMER generated a message after completing scan that said rootkit detected. I clicked OK and haven't done anything with regards to that message. I have included all the log files requested. I'm running windows XP on an old Dell Inspiron 1501 and I'm trying to get my microphone to play directly through my speakers so I can record them both simultaneously. The only answer I've been finding is to tick the 'microphone' checkbox in the volume control playback properties panel, but I don't have a microphone checkbox. There should be a 'microphone' box under SW Synth and CD player but I don't get one apparently.I've downloaded the latest SigmaTel Audio drivers from Dell and despite not having a problem with them before this, I'm inclined to believe that they're the problem. Any ideas?

A:No microphone control in playback Volume Control panel

Okay well of course I find an answer right after posting the topic:
http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3517/t/19295458.aspx
http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3517/p/18112824/18235810.aspx#18235810

Those two pages detail how to get an Input Monitor checkbox which functions just like the microphone one I wanted (although you can only mute it, not alter the volume). I used Instructional Set 3 from the second page, having to add the 'RecMonitorMute' entry as detailed in the first page and I can now hear my microphone input directly through my speakers.

HOWEVER, I'm still unable to record both the microphone and speaker sound at the same time. I thought recording the 'Stereo Mix' channel with the microphone coming through the speakers would work but it isn't and I don't know why. Any ideas?

Hello Yeahman,

You might see if right clicking on the Volume icon in the notification area, and clicking on Open Volume Mixer may have an option for the volume control of the CD audio. If so, then clicking on it's speaker should unmute it.

Hope this helps,

Howdy everyone, am in a bit of a pickle and would appreciate some pointers.
The past 2 days i have lost the sounds of my operating system, cannot stream audio and have lost my volume icon from the taskbar.

I am however able to listen to CDs through itunes, media player etc and can watch DVDs fine. It is just there are no sounds on windows start up and games etc and no streaming audio on Youtube, Myspace etc.

I have tried many things, obviously ticking, un ticking the box in control panel etc. Have tried system restore, been on kellys korner or whatever its called, looked up the problem but i need XP driver disk to reinstall sounds card. I dont have XP driver disk.
aswell i tried downloading new soundcard which didnt work. Was clutching at straws really.

i think some kind of codec i downloaded started the problem. My "show desktop" and Thunderbird icons have also disappeared from other side of taskbar.

My system is XP Pro, a Compaq Armada M700 laptop. Soundcard is a ESS Maestro 2E
Im usually pretty good at solving these kinds of problems, have been googling this for ages tho to no avail

if anyone could help that would be great

thanks
Henry

This is a problem I'm having on Windows XP. When you go to the volume icon and go to turn the volume up higher or lower, you simply get the XP exclamation sound and it pops back down to the middle. The slider simply will not stay up or down.

This is on my mother's computer and she's very hard of hearing so she has to have her volume turned up very high. I have no idea what could be causing this problem - it started doing this a day or two ago and I have not changed any settings or installed any new programs in at least a month. Rebooting doesn't work at all.

A:Can't control volume?

Try performing a System Restore to a date before the behavior started happening.

Hi again, Hoping I can get some help with this other problem. The icon for volume control has disappeared from my lower right hand area. I used to be able to adjust volume from there but now I can't. I went to Control Panel /Sounds and Audio Devices/Volume but when I click on Place an Icon I get a message saying:
Windows cannot display the volume control on the taskbar because the Volume Control Program has not been installed. To install it use Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel.

I didn't ever consciously remove the program so I don't understand this. How can I get it back? I don't have it on any disk. Thanks for any advice.

Hello,

I just re-formatted my computer, and I do not have any type of volume control, resulting in my having no sounds. I would prefer to have the Windows version of Volume Control before any other add on. Please help me out, this has happened before, but I waited a couple of days and got the volume control from one of the service packs, it has been over a week since I've re-formatted and no service pack updates have come... thank you

When I want to change the volume etc with the Windows Volume Control thing, master volume doesn't do anything. It doesn't matter if it is set to mute or not, or if it's turned all the way up or down. The only thing that works is "Wave".
You can choose to put the volume icon in the system tray, so you can click that and change the volume from there, but it doesn't do anything there either.

Hey all,
I've never run into this issue before, so looking for some help:

The Volume Control in my Windows Media player does not work. The Windows Volume Control applet works fine.
I was using WMP10, and it didn't work, so I updated to WMP11, and still it didn't work. I disabled my one addon, and still no luck.

Would it be a registry issue? Any idea on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Joe

Hello all. I have a Gateway MX6455 laptop, with Windows XP Media Center Edition, SP2. I was disabling some services and I seem to have disabled one that I would like to enable again, but I can't find it.

Typically, when I change the volume (on this laptop, it's FN + PGUP/PGDN), a large, neon green volume bar appears on the bottom showing how high the volume is, much like on a TV. But now, when I change the volume, I don't see the bar, so I'm not sure how high or low the volume is.

The volume control works, I just can't see what level the volume is at. This is probably something I could deal with or get used to, but it'd be nice to get it back if possible. Does anyone have any idea what process controls the on-screen volume level? Thanks in advance!

Hi. . .

Look in msconfig for un-checked boxes.
START | run | type msconfig

Look under start-up first, then services. If a service needs to be re-enabled go into services.msc.

I would say it is most likely a Gateway program as some laptops have the green horizontal volume bar and others don't.

Regards. . .

Hey guys...

I've always wondered, why are there so many different sliders in Volume Control? I was wondering if someone could explain them...

I see that Play Control is the master, but what about Wave, MIDI Synth, CD Digital, Auxiliary, CD Audio, Line-In, and TAD-In?

Thanks!

ok. I have windows XP. (sadly enough). and...I decided to run disk clean up. And well apparently it was decided the following are no longer worthy of being on my computer:

*Games (the bundle of games like solitaire)
*IE link in status bar and desktop
*WMP link in Start Menu
and most importantly...
*Volume Control in system bar

...and when i go to control panel -> sounds and audio devices...

the checkbox IS clicked for display in system bar. so i uncheck it, then check it, and...it tells me...it's not installed.

...

freaking DISK CLEANUP uninstalled my volume control. wth.

well i've managed to get the IE links back...i've decided i really don't use the WMP link, but the volume control and games I have not. could someone help me? any help would be appreciated, thanks.

A:Volume Control

You could try doing a system restore to a point just prior to doing the
disk clean up. **See link below
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...emrestore.mspx

Or

Do a sfc /scannow *see the below link
http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html

Those would be your best options.

When I  try to increase the volume, it starts where I want it, then slides down to 0 volume and then mute. I cannot get rid of the black box in the left corner and when I go to raise the volume there it also slides back down to 0 and mute. I uninstalled Realtek and re installed and same thing is happening. Can anyone help me.

My volume control icon disappears from the system tray every couple of days. If I go to 'Sounds and Audio Devices' in the Control Panel the "Place volume control icon in the taskbar" will still be checked even though the icon is missing. The only way to get it back is to uncheck the box - hit apply - then recheck it and hit apply again. In my Taskbar Properties I have not selected "Hide inactive icons" nor "Group similar taskbar buttons" nor "Hide the Taskbar". This isn't a major thing until you open an email and have music blasting at you and you can't mute it or turn it down quickly. Any ideas will be appreciated.

A:Volume Control

check the start, control panel, taskbar and start menu and see if hide inactive icons is checked . If so , uncheck it.

Hi all,
My MC has been working great until recently, suddenly the volume on the remote has stopped working.. but the keyboard and task bar volume control is working fine. The channel selection up and down is working fine.. but the volume just recently stopped working from the remote. Anyone know if maybe theres a service in services that may have something to do with this feature? Seems all functions of the remote are working fine.. just cant adjust the volume from the remote. Any ideas would be appreciated..I'm not sure what services would be related to the remote for MC.. I did alot of tweaking in services from the vipers list...I am wondering what if any might have changed the remote..again.. thanks for any help.

A:volume control

Basically what you need to do is to reinstall the sound card driver again.
So head -on to manufacturer web site ( of the sound card) and download the latest driver and install it.
If you have a OEM PC ( as in Dell, Gateway, HP etc....) go to there web site and download the driver and install it.
And windows is looking on the win98 cd because that's what windows does ...
On the other hand if can check the Device Manager and the Sound card is listed without any yellow question marks then in Control Panel under multimedia should be able to see a checkbox which will " put an icon in the system tray" which might need to be checked.

Seems I can not apply the volume icon to my task bar.

I am not that smart when it comes to computers but I have tried every thing and I had a friend help and he said that I should come here make this post stating what he found.

Seems I am missing this file name Sndvol32.exe from orignal OS

Whatever that mean. I sure do hope someone can help me.

A:Volume Control

If you still have the original OS CD (win XP install disc), put in in your primary cd drive, goto the startmenu, click run. type in cmd and click ok(brings you to the dos prompt). now type in "sfc /scannow". this checks and recopy's original system files that were installed with XP. It won't delete any files it just makes sure all the original files are in tack and how they should be. Good luck.

Hello, i'm currently using internet explore 8. i was wondering if there was a keyboard hot key to lower and raise the volume on youtubes player... Feedback would be great thanks...

A:is there a hot key to control the volume...

A single keystroke could not work as how would it know if you wanted the volumn up or down? At the bottom left of the You Tube Preview window is the volumn slider. Just rest your curser on the speaker icon then it's no great effort needed to slide that back and forth!
