"Error moving file or folder" "directory is not empty" one file left

Q: "Error moving file or folder" "directory is not empty" one file left

I am getting the following error when moving files on the same drive or from one to another:

"Error Moving File or Folder
Cannot remove folder (insert folder name here): The directory is not empty."

This is fairly common (once or twice a month) and it occurs usually with folders containing many subfolders when being moved by explorer gui "Move the selected items", or ctrl-x, ctrl-v . Repeated attempts through the same process seems to move the folders, but the errors increase as the concentration of stubborn folders increases.

There are no event viewer logs corresponding to these errors. (eventvwr.msc: system, or application)

I would have thought this would be a common problem, but extensive searches came up with nothing... so either it is rare, untroubling to others, extremely easy to fix, or my search queries suck. =)
I am going to run Checkdisk to make sure all is well there, and I will repost the likely failure.

A: "Error moving file or folder" "directory is not empty" one file left

Occasionally when I am deleting a file, it is difficult, I have to go through process explorer, search for the thread that is strangely(?) associated with that file in explorer (no reasonable dependencies could be linked, nor is the file being viewed), and kill the thread before deletion.

any thoughts?

Thanks =)

so yea.. i have at least half a clue.

Here is the deal.
In doing drive copies, data recoveries, etc... when we are moving a mass amount of data from one drive to another we run into this problem a lot.
"Error moving file or folder" -- "directory is not empty"
If you restart the move, it will continue on and keep going, restart enough times and eventually it will move all directories.

I think its a programming issue with windows and wonder if anyone has a work around ?

I have a suspicion that the copy process is getting out of sequence. That it is trying to move a folder before it actually emptied it. Possibilities are :
1) windows forgot its place in moving through and navigating numerous sub directories and it is having a problem with “recursive calls.”
2) Computers with hyper threading or dual core processors are spawning the movement of files across multiple processes, and some are getting ahead of the other.
3) It did actually move the file, but the cache or something in memory has not updated, or the full data write has not completed yet before it tried to move the directory. (delayed write)
Yes, you can copy and then delete the old... Read more

A:"Error moving file or folder" -- "directory is not empty"

This is a known issue. It is by design.

As you may know, moving is in its essence an unsafe process. It would be better to use the actual sequence of copy and then delete.

I have this problem with my laptop that I really need to fix. Its annoying!

Whenever I have a folder up, or have a browser up, the "File" toolbar at the very top left of the file/browser keeps on flashing as if I'm clicking on it. Sometimes its very hard to type when doing this. It will do it for a while and then after a while it will stop, only to come back again. I tried system restore and that didn't help the problem.

OK. This is complicated; please be patient. Some months ago my PC (Win7 Ultimate x64) suddenly came up with the dreaded "BOOTMGR CTRL+ALT+DEL to continue..." error message. No idea what caused this; the OS had been operating flawlessly for almost a year. Anyway, I tried using a "Windows 7 Recovery Disc" which I had burned from an .iso file downloaded ages ago. After several unsuccessful attempts to fix the problem with the Recovery Disc, I gave up in frustration and rebooted from the Win7 installation DVD. It of course told me there was an existing Win7 OS on the machine; did I wish to update/overwrite that or install a NEW copy of the OS? I chose "new copy" and installed it. This fixed the problem, of course. Once I was certain all was working (several days later), I used Win7's "BOOTMGR" utility to DELETE this second, unnecessary version of the OS. All still worked fine, but it "shrunk" drive D: and left an "UNUSED" area on the drive (according to the DISKMGR tool). I don't remember the drive letter the install routine created. Anyway, I could not "extend" D: or get back the wasted HD space no matter what I tried. Naturally, in the process I stupidly screwed up something and was back to the "BOOTMGR missing..." situation. Arrgghh!! I used another PC to search for help on the 'net, and found a lot of praise for a utility called "EasyBCD" (using "Ubunt... Read more

I am getting an "Access is Denied" error message on a hard drive that I am trying to recover files from that is from my HP Pavilion with Windows XP that fried. My hard drive is still good, and I am trying to rescue the files in the "Documents and Settings/Owner" folder. I have connected the hard drive to my laptop, which also has XP; but when I try to open the "Owner" folder in "My Documents", it tells me that "Access is Denied." And when I hover over the folder, it says "Folder is Empty." But it is not empty. I can also access everything else on the drive fine -- just not this folder. I suspect that this is a networking type of issue, but I am not sure how to resolve it. Can someone please help me?

I have a home network of five computers where one acts as a common computer ("server") where most data from the other four computers is stored (music, pictures, word processing, movies, etc). All five are running XP Pro SP2.

The "server" had two 80GB hard drives, but SMART was indicating that one was failing, so I replaced it with a 200GB drive. Now, every computer in the house can access the 80GB drive and all of its files but none of the computers in the house (except the "server") can access the new hard drive. I have the file sharing set to full access, and I can view the file folders that are on the drive from the networked computers, they are all listed. But when I click on a folder, I get "Access is Denied." When I mouse over a folder, it reads, "Folder is Empty"

But the folder isn't empty though when accessed from the local computer, only when trying to access it over the network.

I have turned off the Windows Firewall, turned it on again, off again, etc, no change. I have Zone Alarm on all the computers, turned it off, still no change.

Any ideas??? I have over 500 CDs on that harddrive, and I want to listen to music from my other comuters! I'm going nuts here.

A:"Access Denied", "Folder Empty" messages

There are two ways that might work.

1. From a computer other than the server right-click "My Computer" and choose "Map Network Drive". Where is says "Folder" type "\\<ip address>\C$" if you want to share the C partition of that drive (don't type the quotes).
Go to My Computer and and click on the Tools Menu and then Folder Options.

Click the view tab.
Scroll all the way down until you see "Use simple file sharing (Recommended)" and uncheck it.
Click OK.

Now right-click the drive you want to share and choose "Sharing and Security".
Click the security tab.
Click "add" and add "Everyone".
Give "Everyone" the rights you want them to have "Read only" or whatever you want.

Thank you for your help. Sometimes when I want to move a folder, I receive the following message:

"The action can't be completed because the folder or a file in it is open in another program..."

This is frequently caused by a Thumbs.db file, which I believe generates thumbnail images. Is there a way to prevent Windows from locking these files, so they can be moved, without disabling thumbnails completely as explained above?

A:Get "open in another program" error when moving file

Hi hrstud, a slightly different problem that I have, but I too am also looking for an updated Version of Unlocker, (in my mind the best software (free), for just the problem you're having. It worked perfectly in XP, but as far as I know; there's no updated version (in the works). Someone mentioned Lockhunter but so far that hasn't worked the way Unlocker did. I find that if you have the preview pane opened, you can't move the file, so I have the preview pane closed when I'm moving files/folders around. Something you might want to try.

how can I change this?

Some background - this may not be the issue I need to solve at the end of the day:

I believe the location is causing crashes, since I blew up lots of Library registry values (in an attempt to remove them from the OS), and I think it defaults to the library page.

eg, 2shared - file upload and sharing
[edit: stupid editor auto href'd the text... bah]

crashes IE and Firefox (not Chrome for some reason... possibly because it uses its own code?) when I click the browse button (same for any "browse" button that spawns a native find-your-file thing).

It may be something else, but anyway...

edit: If I disable "Expand to Current Folder" in Win Explorer, the crash does not occur. So perhaps it is trying to expand to a folder that is broken?
I want to keep "Expand to Current Folder" on, though, as I like the feature.

A:Default "Browse for file" location in web browser "choose file" box

Hello Silmeria,

It may be best to do a system restore using a restore point (if available) dated before you blew up the registry to see if that may sort this for you. Afterwards, you could use the tutorial below instead to remove libraries without blowing up the registry like that.

Hope this helps,

XP Home (installed SP2 recently, which MIGHT have something to do with this?).

Just saved two word docs and a bmp file, all separately. All three times I saw that a new location has been added to the Save As drop-down menu. It didn't open to My Documents folder but was in the general folder list of the whole computer. The location was called "FTP File Locations." It's never appeared on the Save As menu before. This made me think of the file/print sharing control, which is now located in the Windows Firewall, but I don't use that Firewall, I turned it off to use Norton. What was FTP Locations? And is there any way to disable file/print sharing without using the Windows Firewall? (These may be the same thing, I don't know.) Also, in Network Connections, I thought I'd find file/print sharing control there, but now XP wants me to run a whole Network Wizard thing..I'm afraid I'll somehow set up a network instead! or enable all kinds of things..I don't want to create a disaster here.

(My son installed an FTP program months ago for work he was doing, but the program was removed. I just searched for it, it's definitely gone.)

This is a stand-alone, non-networked home computer.

P.S. I saved another Word doc and now it's back to opening to My Documents folder as I can't find the FTP Locations anywhere.

I have 3 HD's running. Two (NTFS) internal and one (FAT32) external.

A 300GB (NTFS) with about 14GB of free space.
A 60GB (NTFS) with 9GB of free space.
A 160GB (FAT32) with 149GB of free space.

I am getting this error message while trying to transfer a 4GB Movie from the 300GB HD to the 160GB HD saying "Error copying file or folder, There is not enough free disk space". Obviously there is enough disk space on the target drive for the movie but for some reason or another it doesn't think so. Windows also recognizes that there is the correct amount of space available, it only says there isn't when I try to transfer.

I tested transferring with other files and it works fine, its just that file. I also tried transferring it to the 60GB HD and it worked without any problems.

My questions are:

Is there something wrong with the file?

Is it that there isn't enough room in a temporary folder for it to transfer a file that big?

Is it the fact that they are different file systems?

Is there something wrong with my HD?

Or is it something that i'm not thinking of?

Thanks for your help. Sorry if this post is in the wrong section, I thought it was the most appropriate.

A:XP "Error copying file or folder" message

Thankfully you didn't try "moving" it, sometimes from doing this it vanishes from the source (as wanted) and never gets to the destination (due to out of memory error)

I've seen this myself, it's to do with system resource on your PageFile amount of Ram being used and the CPU coming in trying to process it all.

In most cases I have run CCleaner first then copied the large file(s) across without fuss.
It's just all the temp files together and Windows thinking that memory is low when it's just the processing of this memory in a temporary location (being %temp% usually)

This is driving me bonkers and I have almost no hair left. I really hope someone can help.

When I attempt to copy or move a file or folder from my Win7 box to my WinXP (SP3) media server, the operation nearly always fails. Take, for example, my trying to copy the VLC Media Player folder (704 files, 75.1 MB) from Program Files on Win7 to the C: drive on the media server via a mapped drive (X). In all cases, after hanging up at some point during the copy, I get this message:

Network Error
There is a problem accessing X:\<whatever current sub-folder copying is>
Make sure you are connected to the network and try again

I should note here that you only see the message come up if you wait for it (~1 min) after the copy hangs. If you try to cancel the hung copy before the message comes up, you can crash explorer.exe. I must also stress that there are no other access problems on the network. Files on the media server are accessible as expected from the Win7 box. Performing the same copy in reverse ("pulling" the same folder to the XP box from its console instead of "pushing" from Win7) works perfectly. I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

On my laptop (64 bit Windows 7), "Recent Items" works properly, showing all docs I've opened only (no folders, as it should be). The taskbar Jumplists for each program also show recent docs opened in that program.

The "Recent Places" folder, however, is always empty, nor do recent folders show on the Jumplists for folders.

Searching has turned up nothing useful, but tells me I'm not the only one with this issue.

What I've tried already:sfc /scannow
making sure both the "Store and display" options in Taskbar and Start Menu Properties are checked.

Hi All,

I'm having some issues with WinDBG and a crash dump analysis for a Windows Phone 10, so I hope someone could answer this question here.

Background information:
Recently I bought a brand new Lumia 950 XL Dual SIM phone which keeps restarting over and over on a very random basis. After reading several threads it turns out that many people are suffering from the same issue and generic remediation steps are not working
at all. This includes using Windows Device Recovery Tool, turning off certain features such as WiFi & Bluetooth, SD card usage, etc.
After troubleshooting this issue for a while I decided to get on with Field Medic application which clearly indicated a 000000F9 crash. Unfortunately this didn't tell anything too specific so I captured a minidump from the phone and went straight to WinDBG
for further analysis.

Now my issue is that although I can load the crashdump into WinDBG, I'm unable to get the appropriate symbol files as WinDBG is constantly complaining about not finding the required files. I've changed the required sympaths as necessary so I've been trying
to use the official MS online repositories but WinDBG just doesn't want to cooperate and get the files. Unfortunately I couldn't find an offline symbols repository for Windows Phone 10 and therefore I'm stuck with the analysis. The symbols would be required
in order to nail down the root cause making the 0000009F crashes. So far I can only see that this is possibly a driver re... Read more

Hiya, I could use a little help resolving what should be a simple problem. It's really a long story, but to skip to the important part, I'll just recount this little tale:

I wanted to delete some files off of an old external hard drive to make space for some new stuff. It didn't matter, since the files I was deleting had been long since copied to a new drive. However, Vista, in its infinite wisdom, told me I couldn't delete the files, and it was for my own good. I politely said, "okay, Vista! Thanks for keeping me honest!"

But then I muttered, "I already have a mother" under my breath, and proceeded to go behind Vista's back and turn off User Account Control so I could delete the files anyway. Well, I knew that wasn't the best idea, so I immediately turned UAC back on afterwards, but it was too late. Vista caught me, and after the second restart, smote me with a problem I'd seen once before: nearly every program on my computer was said to have been closed after it "encountered a problem" or some nonsense, and when restarted again, the disk checker was run, found numerous problems, and did whatever it had to do to go about fixing them all.

Now I'm not sure what all that was about, because everything seems to be running okay now, save for one minor thing. That little "click" sound you get when navigating windows explorer was nowhere to be heard. I tried another restart and another disk check, b... Read more

I am trying to uninstall Yahoo Messenger using Add/Remove Programs. It won't let me and this error message comes up.

Can someone help?

Thanks...and have a great day! Note: Just registered and first time poster.

A:Solved: Error: "Could not open "INSTALL.LOG file"

You have most likely run a Cleaning program that has the option to delete LOG files.
Some LOG files are just that. Files that "log" activity.

But some, like the one you reference, contain information about how to UNinstall that application.

In this case, I would reinstall Yahoo Messenger, and THEN uninstall it.

I'm using a command line batch file to backup files from my W7 Pro x64 machine to an external USB HD. Basically, "xcopy c:\......\my documents\*.*" "external HD". I couldn't get this to work until I truncated the source directory to "documents" instead of "my documents" [the name that the W7 installer specified]. While the batch file now runs and does what it's suppose to do, I'm mystified as to why the source directory needs to have a truncated name in the batch file rather that the one it has "officially." Any insight into this is appreciated.

A:question - batch file only works with "unofficial" directory name

Hello Robert,

"My Documents" is just a symbolic link to "Documents" for backwards compatibility for older programs that still reference "My Documents". "Documents" is the true folders name. It's the same with all of the "My...." user folders.

Hope this helps,

I'd like to have the "thumbs.db" file created in its own images' directory - like it was done in Windows XP -
not, in some deep subdirectory of windows,
where I can't tell which-is-which's...
The reason I want it, is this:
I have noticed that when i burn a cd/dvd with lots of photos in a folder, when trying to preview thumbnails of the photos from the cd/dvd,
the thumbnails "creation" takes a long...long...long time. But IF (like in WinXP) I had burned the "thumbs.db" of the correspondent folder,
together with the photos, then, the thumbnails' preview appear in a blinking of an eye!

Is there some way to "tell" Windows 7, to store this thumbs' cache file in each photo directory.

(PS. googling for this matter, the only thing that I found, reffered to network stored photos and how to delete the "thumbs-cache" file(s)] .
I'm interesting not in network but the Locally created thumbs.db file).

Thanks in advance,

I have a Kodak Easyshare SV811 digital frame. I copied several photos from my computer picture file to the frame via usb cable. However, some of the pictures didn't copy over and when I tried to do it individually I would get the message "Cannot copy...(file #) directory or file could not be created" why will come photos copy over to frame but others will not? The frame still has 45% memory left so it's not a space issue. I cannot tell that any of the photos that won't copy over are any different than the ones that did, they are all jpeg

A:"cannot create directory or file" message for digital frame

Try a new media card (if the photo frame uses a media card, of course). Then you can put the media card into a card reader, copy the files across, then put the media card in to the frame. This will bypass any problems that the frame might have writing files to itself.

Hi all, hoping someone can shed some light on what whats going on & how I can rectify this highly annoying situation. I'm not sure why this has started, but when I now try to DL any files or save ANY files, I get a message saying 'File directory is corrupted & unreadable'.

I tried to open an image with 'Windows Preview' & got 'Windows Photo viewer cant open this image, as the file appears to be damaged to large or corrupted' (none of which is correct)-yet I can still open ALL images by double clicking to use the windows photo/image viewer App

I also can not save anything either- I tried to take a screen shot & save it using paint- I just got the same 'File directory is corrupted & unreadable' message.

With Windows Internet Explorer, I have been trying to DL a torrent, but cant "open" the DL link (I click "open", but nothing happens), nor can I 'save it' (as I get the same 'File is corrupted & unreadable' message for both "save" options), nor can I click cancel to close the DL options box in Internet Explorer- as again, nothing happens when I click it.
To try get around these problems I tried using the magnet link option- which worked ONCE, but now even that wont work, as I cant DL the 2nd file- the DL starts (after taking ages to DL meta data- which is odd in itself), then the torrent is shortly terminated & I get the 'Error: File or directory is corrupt & unreadable' file message .

I am trying to install a new program on my computer, but the instructions require me to patch an .exe file (shkHS215.exe) into my program directory. I have never had to do a patch or change anything in my program directory so I am not certain how to do this or if it is a "normal" and/or safe thing to do. The program was packed as a .rar file and when I extracted the files there was an shkHS215 application included with the files.

I am running Windows XP Professional. Is the Program Directory the files I get to by going to
My Computer > Local Disk C: > Program Files > "ABC program" ? If this is the correct program directory, do I simply copy the .exe file here and click to run it?

If this is not the correct program directory, how do find it and complete the above operations? I've also heard that sometimes running a file/application that you're not sure is safe you can use something called Sandboxie or Virus Total. Is this the kind of file you would use these services for and do they work to help protect your computer?

I appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks and I hope you have a great weekend.

Just recently, in the past three or four day or so, I have been receiving the following error when, in explorer, I attempt to drag a folder from one directory to another, or when I attempt to rename a folder, either inline or through the properties dialog:

"Item not found"

Could not find this item

This is no longer located in [original directory]. Verify the item's location and try again.

[name of folder I'm trying to move]
Date created: [etc.]

Try again Cancel
When I press the "Try Again" button, the folder and its contents move where they're supposed to, without issue. Notably, I receive a new error for every subfolder, and although there is a "do this for the next x items" checkbox available, it doesn't work.

So when moving an individual folder with no subfolders or when renaming a folder, it's a minor annoyance. When moving, say, a 100gb music folder, containing hundreds of subfolders, between drives, it's a significant nuisance.

I have no such issue when preforming the comparable actions with "MOVE" in the command prompt, by the way.

Anyone know anything about this? Your ideas and suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I'm running Windows 7, recently updated, on a Thinkpad T400, if that helps.

A:Error ("Item not found") when moving/renaming folder in explorer

Where are you moving the files to which directory, which drive? How much space is lift on the drive you are moving the files to? Try copying the files then pasting them or drag and drop them. Also try moving the files in chunks not in big segments of 10GB or more. Perform a CHKDSK /F on all drives.
Go to "Start" type in CMD located CMD.exe right click on CMD.exe then select "Run As Administrator" at the command prompt type in then hit enter...

type in Y for yes then manually reboot.

I have basic knowledge of the command terminal, in that I only know how to navigate through directories. Currently I am trying to execute the following:

java ?jar MRTBatch.jar ?d input_directory ?p parameter_directory\input_parameter_file ?o parameter_file_directory

I have already navigated to the correct directory to make use of the MRTBatch.jar tool, however the problem arises with my user inputs, which are of the form "C:\Users\My Name\Rest of path". I keep getting the error:

ERROR: Could not find directory "C:\Users\My Name".

When navigating directories earlier I always had to go find the file I wanted, copy its path location, paste it into the command terminal, and then erase the "C:\" portion (so it became cd\Users\My Name\Rest of path) for it to work. So when I got this error I have tried multiple edits for it to recognize the paths. Could it be as simple as switching the direction of the slashes? I would have thought the complete path name would always be best. Is it because I'm already burrowed down so far that it cant seem to recognize any file further back?

Here are the directions I am following, pg 40 titles "Automated Batch Processing":

Instead, I went and turned off all the ESS protections one by one and it turned out to be HIPS that is causing this false positive.
In fact, it is the Advanced Memory Scanner option under HIPS that is causing the error, while the application in question is legit (using Inno Setup and presumably trying to write to the user temp folder, not sure whether just logs or to execute from there)

My office just upgraded, and I can no longer use Windows XP. On this system, I was able to add a separate taskbar to facilitate quick access to commonly-browsed folder locations on our vast network, and another one expedited the launching of useful programs and lists. Each task on each taskbar was represented with a big custom icon to save eye strain. I had them installed in opposite vertical margins, and they were set on auto-hide to keep them out of the way when not being used. Just move your mouse pointer to the left or right margin, and BAM! Sorry for the cliche, but I really got used to the convenience of what I had set up, and I just don't think I can be as efficient without anything comparable.

Now there appears to be nothing comparable in the Windows 7 GUI, and it's making me sick with rage! I see only the option to put a "toolbar" on an existing "taskbar", and no option to create any additional taskbars! This cramps up your one-and-only taskbar, plus the tiny toolbar access buttons require way too much precision for anything that's supposed to be quick. When you've figured out how to bring up that ridiculous button, the list that it yields is small enough to cause painful eyestrain - nothing efficient, much less cool about this at all! I have seen customization options in other OS GUIs that may have resolved some of these issues, but I see none such in W7.

Best to make a full copy (image) of your hard drive, to recover. The Windows backup only backs up certain files. You are still left to reinstall most everything (including Windows). The Marcrium Reflect (a UK company), free version, will do nicely. But, you need something more than a disc or flash drive. A USB connected hard drive would probably be best.

When our website users click on an html attachment embedded on a web-page in IE9, the download manager will not display the "Open" option. It will only display "Save" and "Cancel" which our users don't like, having to save the
html document in a folder to open it. Whereas, when downloading attachments like pdf, word etc. all three options are displayed.

Is there any setting to tweak , which will display all the 3 options for HTML attachments as well?

A:IE9 download manager will not display "Open" option (only "Save" and "Cancel" is displayed) for downloading HTML documents.

As you know, the Open-Save-Cancel dialog box helps you prevent your computer from affecting by virus while downloading.
So I suggest you test to reset all zones to a lower level temporarily and then please attempt to download this html attachment again.

However, since you can normally download the other documents, I suspect there is some restriction in the website which you are trying to view. I recommend you to contact the administrator of that website if possible.
could you please send me the link of the website from where you are trying to download the html attachment?

Hello. I am using a POWER USER account, Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 /w all the latest patches availible via microsoft update. I was trying to create a .zip file of a folder within the primary directroy of a backup hard drive I use.

For Example:
D:\stuff - I wanted to make a zipfile of the folder "stuff."

Then I get the following error "Cannot Create Output File."

However, if I move the folder to the destop or a subdirectory i.e. stuff/more stuff, then the .zip file is created with no problems.

Also, because user accounts [at least in my experience] have a tendency to decay, I created a freash power user account and the same problem persist.

Is this a standard security feature for power user accounts? Is there anyway I can "disable" it if it is?

Thank You.

Hopefully I'm posting in the correct forum section and that this isn't a topic that has been discussed frequently as I've done extensive searches and browsing before deciding to post.

So here's the problem/annoyance I'm encountering and I'm wondering if there's some sort of solution out there:

I have Vista Home Basic and IE7. I can download files quite fine, but the problem is that when I try to open the file either from the dialogue window that shows up after the download OR when the file opens automatically after a download, a new dialogue window shows up that says "Verify" (apparently while the system verifies the file for who knows what).

Now, that window showing doesn't really bother me that much, even though it does bother me, the real problem arises when you download multiple files at the same time and open those files because once the system tries to verify all those files at the same time it ends up crashing the browser.

So what I'm mainly looking for is a setting that would disable this file verification by Vista/IE7.

I have a fairly good computer, with 2GB of RAM, 2.20 Dual Core processor so I really really doubt this is a performance issue.

Can provide screenshots if needed.

Hello Everyone

I'm really hoping there is someone here who can help me with what should be an easy issue. This might be something related to workgroup vs home group but I think I have that understood.

I have a windows 7 machine with the same workgroup set as my two XP machines. I then went in and set four harddrives root directories to share. Now what is weird and very frustrating is that two of the hard drives the other computers can get into just like one would expect. However the other two drives are behaving completely different. One drive it just gives a permissions error message right away. The other it lets me access one layer of folders but then gives the same message when I try to open any one of them.

It's very frustrating, I set up the sharing just with simple right click- the drive say share and "Everyone" read/write/full, so I don't understand how some can be interacting differently than others.

Any help would be great.

Thanks in advance

A:LAN File Sharing "7" to "XP" Permissions issue

No solution is immediately apparent to me, but am I correctly assuming were dealing with all NTFS drives here?
And are the four hard drives on the XP machine?
Did you name each share for each drive? Try mapping the shared drive(s) that you now can not with their drive letter followed by $.

For example...

...and see what happens.

Also, make sure each machine being shared from has a password set. You can not share with a blank (non-existant) pass.

Hi There,
My email contacts from MOST of my emails are sending out "False" emails apparently from me. That are not obviously from me, and as it may say in "Subject Line "Re: My Name" most of my contacts security advises not to open the emails.

When I was using a temporary Bigpond Pre-Paid wireless stick, and topped it up $100, every 2 days, it was obvious something was wrong.

Upon calling Bigpond tec, they could see the programme running in the background as "file Scanning" and would refer it to the police.

We (my husband and I) "think" we know who has bought the programme to do this, has reason to watch email conversations between family/business, and high computer knowledge. (not calling anyone anyone here a 'geek" I'm here.

Our super cool Bank Manager, prior sold programmes to IBM (no slouch) and we told him our suspicions, as we blocked all our bank accounts.
Wisely he advised, it isn't the money as would be gone, but malicious and watching all correspondence, with a good reason to as is a high ranked employee in a family run business.

My bank manager with my permission shall legally, look at my computer from his end, but wont illegally advise the person's IP address location (understandably) but would forward to the Police if we wish him to.

Sorry looong post (my 1st) he has put me into the direction of "Net Stat in dos"

Does anyone know where I start or go from here?

A:Computer "Hacked" Rather "File Scanning"

I have now gone to net stat after sending an email from older email address and noticed that at the same time it sent the same email to contacts in that email address (returned as not delivered) also via an email address not recognised, never heard of.
Could or am I sound daft by asking this be the searcher's fake email address.
With net stat it is just under information....information..information and audit.

Can anyone help from this point on?

I have had this problem numerous times in the past where the installation proceeds then ends with the messages:

During the installation of the device.
The system cannot find the file specified
and it goes into a detection loop

HERE is the solution:

Windows 2000/XP has a bug that it cannot properly detect new hardware by *.inf files, if the RunOnce registry key is missing for the following location:

This key is often used by installers to execute post-reboot programs, but sometimes they accidentally delete this key.

IMPORTANT: This article contains information about modifying the registry. Make sure that you understand how to backup and restore the registry, in case a problem occurs. Please read the linked Microsoft Knowledge Base article prior to editing the registry.
Go to Start » Run and enter "regedit."

Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion

With CurrentVersion Highlighted, go to the Edit menu and select New » Key

Name the key RunOnce, leaving everything else about the key alone.

The RunOnce key should now exist underneath the CurrentVersion key.
Once the key exists, Windows 2000/XP stops redetecting the Hardware

Hi all!  Every so often I get a user (and it is usually the same users) that call with an issue that they cannot download files.  Doesn't matter what type of file.  But when they click download they will get a pop up that the system doesn't
recognize the file and the file name is changed to whatever_exe instead of whatever.exe.
Same thing happens with our auto launch java program.  All of the sudden IE will change the file extension to _jnlp and is then unreadable.  This is not a system wide problem, it is profile specific.
The only fix that I have found is to do a reset of IE from the advanced page (IE options, advanced, reset, then restart machine)
It is great that I finally found a "fix" for it, but I would love to know what the user is doing to cause this to happen!  They have no clue.  Any ideas what causes this???

Today at some point all this "Antivirus Software" started popping up telling me how my computer was terribly infected and I need to downloaded their software to get rid of it etc. Well I never had that software so I knew something was wrong. Now I keep getting these "Antivirus software alert" popups that say INFILTRATION ALERT - Your computer is being attacked by an internet virus etc etc and gives details and asks if I want to block this attack. But mainly popups come up every 30 seconds or so saying, "Application cannot be executed. The file wmiadap.exe is infected. Do you want to activate your antivirus software now?" I noticed the file changes. Sometimes rundll32.exe or wuauclt.exe. I ran SuperAntiSpyware before I found here because it was the only thing suggested that I could find. I only got it to work in the short window that I had when I would restart my computer, then could download the file quickly, then I had to restart again and start the scan because after about 2 minutes, everything on my computer is worthless. Can't open any files, downloads, anything. So I'm typing this through a sea of popups and Security Warning windows and past porn popups. Anyways, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I have been trying to setup a postscript printer on port "File:" so I can print anything from a webpage to a file for running through Acrobat 8 Distiller. When I first install the print to file, it works fine until I reboot the computer. Every time I print to this printer after the reboot, I get a pop-up box titled "Local Port" with the message "Cannot Print to File: Access Denied". I gather it is a permission problem of some sort as I can log onto the Administrator user-id and it prints to file fine. Any ideas on what permissions I need to set this printer to in order for it to work under a standard user-id?

I have given up finding a solution to the problem. I no longer use Adobe Acrobat Professional full as I have tried both updates 8.0.1 & 8.0.2 to no avail, and is now unsupported as Adobe is up to version 9 of this software. I have opted for a freeware solution, so I have uninstalled Adobe Acrobat Professional and installed the freeware CUTEPDF Writer at It works beautifully on Vista X64 on all documents, including Microsoft Word and Scanned Images and Photos. I'm very happy with the results.

I am running Windows 7 on an iMac with VMware Fusion. Everything was fine for three months. Then slowly, problems started showing up. A notice would come up saying that Windows Explorer wasn't working and needed to close. (re-booted) So far, it is still only occasionally.

Then the screen size display began to change EVERY time Windows was restarted. The change was to a different size each time. (changed it back) It is getting to be a real pain!

Now the "My Computer" screen only works occasionally.(in the beginning, I rebooted. Now that doesn't help) When it doesn't work - the box is mostly blank with a horizontal "thermometer" where the words "my computer belong" slowly moving across the top. Even when the line is filled, the "my computer" screen doesn't fill in. When I do get a screen, I am only able to move files or folders for a short time. After that, I get a square when clicked on says "calculating" - and it never finishes. This happens with moving many, or only two or three files. I am also unable to click and highlight several random files with the control key held. This also happens with the recycle bin. I am unable to delete the files there.

I have a 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4GB 800 MHz I use three different registry cleaners (had lots of problems before Windows7 and am not too happy with 7) and a Malware program. I have a software program that offers a repair feature on its disc. Is ther... Read more

A problem I find is that I am so busy with my emails, I often need to clean out my inbox. I do this by setting up basic search folders such as "all emails from my team which are in my inbox only" or "any email sent to me which was part of a distribution list in my inbox only" etc...

This is great for filtering my mail and I would like to create a rule as such:

"All mail within my inbox which has been either replied to forwarded by myself".

I can't seem to find any options and I'm hoping an Outlook guru can help

If you don't know the answer, can you try googling it for me to see if you can find anything, loads of heads are better one...

I added a slave drive to my Windows XP Pro computer, and it appears to work properly.

However, when I open the "Documents and Settings" folder (on the slave drive E:\, which is Windows XP Home Edition -- not XP Pro), I do not see any of my documents, sub-folders, etc. There should be MANY sub-folders (inside the "My Documents" folder which isn't even visible), with hundreds of documents, jpgs, etc. within it.

When that drive is installed as the Primary drive in my other computer, the User "Larry" (which is me) has all Administrative privileges. On the computer that I'm running now (with the slave drive in it), I also have Administrator privileges. I own both computers.

My User Name "Larry" is password-protected when I login to Windows (when the drive is Primary and installed into my main computer (not this computer with XP Pro).

I've tried clicking on all the users; Administrator, Default User, Larry, Guest, etc. (Note: I get an "Access Denied" error when clicking on the Guest "Documents and Settings" folder).

So, the questions are:

1. Why can't I see any files or subdirectories in the "Documents and Settings" folder on the slave drive?

2. There's supposed to be a folder named "My Documents," but I can't find it. Normally, that path is "C:\Documents and Settings\My Documents".

Your files and folders may have been hidden by the virus, go to folder options and 'show hidden files and folder' to see if they actually are hidden. If they are, you can use Grindler's UnHide tool to 'unhide' all of your files and folders. As for the virus, move this thread to the virus and other malware removal forum in order for it to be noticed by an authorised malware removal member.

When creating a new message how do I move the "From" box to the left of the screen so that it lies directly below the "To" box (as used to be the case with Outlook Express)? At the moment the "From" box is located at the far right of the screen. As I have a 16x9 screen and a number of email addresses it is far too easy to press the Send button before realising that I have the wrong address in the "From" box. Yes, I know that I should be prefect and carefully check first, but it is simply too easy to make a mistake. There must be some way of moving the "From" box back to a more sensible position.

Is there any way to hide specific unused drivers from this view? Thanks as always,

First things first: WinXP Pro, SP2 fully up to date but system restore is turned off.

Trying to get Windows Explorer to export a directory tree to a text file the other day instead of doing it via command line, I messed something up and can't get it back. In Explorer, this is where I was: Tools >> Folder Options >> File Types >> File Folder >> Advanced

I managed to insert the script that I wanted, but somewhere along the way I made a mistake and set it to Default. Now, whenever I click on an folder in Explorer it runs whatever is set as default. I can "Default" a lot of things (enqueue in Winamp, play in VLC Media Player, Find, etc) but none of them is the simple "Open" command.

I looked around at a couple other things (namely "Folder" and Firefox) in the File Types box, and while they both have Open commands included, I can't "Edit" them to see what kind of command they are running.
