Ok before I get into my problem, here's a little about my notebook - I trust that these details may be somewhat helpful in attempts to resolve my issue:

I have a HP Pavilion dv6000 (RG364UA#ABA) with Microsoft Windows XP Professional
version 5.1.2600 (media center) service pack 2.0 Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU T5500 @ 1.66GHz version x86 Family 6 Model 15 Stepping 6 current speed 1660 MHz

Let me start by thanking you for your patience as you read this. I contacted HP Tech support via chat numerous times to discuss general questions around some concerns I had regarding a "space issue" I was having. The "space issue" actually was caused by a surplus of photos I had in "MY PICTURES" which I thought I had removed after I burned them to a disk as well as video files located on another user profile.

Anyhow, I contacted HP support and was advised to do a "non destructive" recovery and was completely assured that this would resolve my problem and all files and applications would remain in tact unharmed. Well that was crap.

Once the recovery process was complete, all user information was gone. No user profiles existed on the login screen. I had to recreate a user profile. The recovery reverted everything to "factory settings", however all files were found on the old user profile which was located under "documents and settings" on the c:\ drive.

Also, all applications still appeared under All Programs on the Start Menu, however when trying to load a program (I installed that did not come on the machine, photoshop elements), I got an error message regarding a dll could not be found, licensing information and serial keys could not be found and the program had to close. I tried to reproduce the problem so i could list the exact error message, however now a new error message : The action you have requested could not be completed because the application is not responding. It may still be loading or waiting for a response from you..

This pretty much goes for all installed software that didn't come on the machine. This all makes sense because the applications i'm trying to access are not on "Add/Remove Programs". I attempted to copy over all data from the old profile to a new one, however not sure what this accomplished except for taking up more space.

So i'm guessing that when you install software, the registration keys and info associated with "whatever" user profile, were hidden when the user profie was wiped when i did the reovery. (again-- all of the app data still remains in a subfolder under the old profile as mentioned above).

So with all this said, I've backed up my documents, photos etc.. however i want to recover my applications. Some which I don't have the software anymore. Now.. because all of the files and stuff are supposedly still here.. How can back up my install files and license keys?? I would love to recover the old profile, but if this is not possible, any suggestions on how I can get my apps back in working order?? I don't know that much about REGEDIT and i'm terrified of making changes, & honestly prefer not to go that rout.

Lastly, since I copied over all from the other user profile, I now I'm back to the space issue. Which, the C:\ drive reports that I have only 9.62GB free. I really need to get my computer back in working order, I have so many things I need to work on and am limited by this.

The aforementioned issues are not a result of any virus or adware. I've run scans and all report clean. I do need to reinstall my norton 2007 internet security because this was reverted to the trial 2006 version which came on the machine. I've not done this because of the free space.

I certainly appreciate all the help I can receive from those more technical experts than myself and look forward to hearing from you.

It all began with a free space issue - after connecting numerous times to HP support tech, i was told to do a non destructive system restore., which i did, only to find my user profile gone, and all the dlls that run my applications no longer working. The space issues was from too many picture files, which i discovered my husband had uploaded about 1500 pictures of a friends wedding. so once i got rid of those pictures, the space issue was resolved.

After being completely frustrated, and a lot of research, I read to "copy over" my old user profile files from under "documents and settings" to the new profile i created.. which I did. I also did a disk clean up and defrag.. and evidently have deleted a bunch of things i shouldn't have. I never actually recovered the user profile.. the weird thing is... is that the picture i had chosen associated with the old profile i'm trying to recover.. was recovered. totally weird voo doo stuff going on in the background i guess. so now i want to scream. i guess i can delete everything.. i've backed up all the stuff that was under my documents. so no big deal, however it's the applications that i'm worried about. when doing the non destructive restore, it took me back to factory settings.. so my norton 2007 internet security was replaced with the 60 day trial version of 2006 that came with the PC (which was purchased in december 2006 and in march 2007 i got some freaky virus and the geek squad folks did a d... When I installed Win8 on one computer I need a H.P. printer driver. So I went to H.P. support/download did not find the needed driver so I called their Tech. support. A friendly support guy looked at my system and told me my copy of Microsoft Win8 bought at Best Buy was not a legit copy, also my system had been infected and they needed to remove my Win8 clean my system and reinstall Win8. made me a deal of a reduced price of $250US I knew this was not right so I begged them good buy went to Best Buy where I have good friends in the Geek Squad. they got the needed driver and printer works fine. Today my Netgear routher died, called Netgear to get my lifetime warranty. This also was a support in India guy said it would cost$39US to make sure it was the router I said thanks but no thanks. Took my old Netgear router back to Best Bye where I bought it three years ago and they gave me a new Netgear router. I needed setup help so called Netger as new user also in India guy was friendly looked at my system and helped me get it setup. Then he informed me my computer was under attack and my files were being read he could fix my system and protect my files for the small sum of just $85US. Well I was using a small backup H.P. computer on the Net. hardwired and it was almost never used. So I knew it was a India Tech. support scam again. I just installed XP on an old computer 2 days ago and ran all of 142 Windows Updates. As for your current installation, try running a Clean Boot. If this works then add one startup item at a time, restarting each time till the computer becomes unresponsive, then you know what the problematic program is. Also, go to Start/Run and type chkdsk C: /R and press enter, in the command prompt type a Y for Yes and reboot the computer. Check Disk will go thorough 5 stages and takes some time. But they could not do it until I had Verizon come out and see why my download speed was only 0.43. I have a hp psc 1350 v printer, trying to install on this machine; printer was installed on this machine in nov.2003 and worked fine until 2 weeks ago. at that time , printer quit working and in the control panel, printer icon showed up like a hidden file. tried to reinstall printer several times with no success. contacted hp support, spent several hours, spanning 4 days ,installing and uninstalling software, trying to install this printer. changed usb cables and same problem.other usb devises are recognised instantly. Hp support sent me a new printer, tried to install, same problem...no printer. so, tried to install printer on 2 other pcs and no problem, worked great (one machine has the exact same mother board as the problem pc).Hp says its a chip problems, problem started when i did a windows recommended driver update for via chip. CAN YOU HELP?

A:[B]HP Tech support gave up on this one[/B]

Uninstall the printer, through ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS, then go to Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device Manager and remove any left over HP/printer entries - look under HP, USB, all the categories. If HP gave you a seperate uninstaller to use then run that, they usually have one and if you look through your CD you might be able to find it hidden somewhere. Then unplug the printer and all other USB devices - except USB a mouse and Keyboard if yours happen to be USB.

Now still in Device Manager remove all USB hubs and then all USB Controllers.

Now go here: http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=403 and download and install the latest VIA 4-in-1 drivers and reboot as request. Then reboot again after the USB controllers are reinstalled.

Now download the latest printer drivers from HP's website for your model if you haven't done so yet and start the installation. Do not plug in the printer until prompt to do so or until the installation is totally complete. When plugging in the printer use a USB connector that is not near the one you used before - they are usually in pairs of two.

If that Fails you can do a System Restore from Programs - Accessories - System to a date before the problems started and hope it works and doesn't recur.

XP runs better with more RAM - if there's nothing wrong with it then add it back in.

Has anyone heard of or had dealings with Procomsupport247 or Khamtechnologies. When My wife called the microsoft support number on two different occasions these are the people she got. They did help with the problem but they charge for service and want you to sign up for multi year contracts. Any help would be appreciated.

Last weekend I was on the phone with Netgear for 4 hours trying to install a simple router and wireless adaptor for the second computer in the house.

The box says "normal installation time 20 minute"

Yesterday, the computer failed in loading Windows XP, so I had to restore the computer to a date PRIOR to the installation of the wireless adaptor.

Today, after 90 minutes on the phone, speaking to a man with an accent so thick, he had to spell just about every word (Whiskey Oscar Romeo Delta) using the phonetic alphabet.

Then we reach my boiling point where I can take it no longer, here's the conversation:

Netgear: Now, under >basic >wireless read me the number
Me: There is no number
Netgear: Yes, very good, now read me the number on the screen
Me: I'm looking at the basic-wireless screen, there is no number on the screen anywhere, am I in the wrong place?
Netgear: No, you are in the right place, just read me the number
Netgear: Yes, thank you, please read me the number on the screen.
Me: Sir, are you listening to me? Say these words back to me, "there is no number on the screen to read."
Netgear: What do you mean there is no number? Of course there is a number there.
Me: May I speak to your supervisor?
Netgear: No, I will solve your problem.
Me: "click" I hung up.

90 minutes, problem remains, and I get a survey from netgear asking me to rate their customer service.

It's the 'Remove the Windows has been Blocked Tech Support Scam'

However, unfortunately I did call the number, and when they wanted money I said absolutely not. Now, when I power up that PC, I get a pop-up that asks for admin password (not the Windows or BIOS popup). I tried command prompt, system restore, and reinstalling windows deleting everything but what was installed and personal files, and still the same popup requesting a password. I tried Esc, and cancel and enter, all not working.

Any suggestions? Any help at all greatly appreciated

If this happened to me, I'd restore from a recent full system backup.  If you don't have one, you'll probably need to do a clean install.

Problem:
I had a desktop that was a wired connectoion and wanted to give it to my kid, so i got a wireless network card and installed it. The card seemed to be working fine, but it would not connect to the internet. (it would hang on "aquiring a network address" then error out saying windows coudlnt connect..)
I called Belkin tech support who tried a bunch of nonsence scare tactics to make me believe my registry was corrupt and that i had a virus. end result- pay them money and they would fix the issue, AND i would be protected for some amount of time. I believe it is 30 days, 90 days, 6 months a year or even 3 years.

What they didnt know/ask/think about was that the router and network card were both brand new, and that the computer I was having issues with had a fresh install of win XP with paid antivirus program. I am having a problem with my granddaughters laptop. The anti-virus had expired when she brought it to me (I'm an IT guy). She was getting popups about cleaning her laptop. It had Optimize pro, My PC Backup, etc. installed (she's 13, not sure if she responded to the popups or not.

I've removed what I thought was junk, installed Microsoft Security Essentials and Malware Bytes, but I can't get either of them to launch and scan the laptop.

I have a friend who had a problem on her computer and she called her ISP Comcast for help since she uses their Norton anti-virus program. To make a long story short, she had to provide them with both her log in & email passwords and then they wanted to charge her $215 to clean her computer. That doesn't make sense to me - I'm not aware of any reliable ISP tech support asking for passwords. I know they ask for permission to take control of a computer and then supply a service number the computer user has to enter. Is this something new that an ISP tech support asks for passwords. She has changed her email password and I recommended to her to also change her log on password. Over this past weekend I have been getting calls from "Windows Tech Support". The first time the tech said my computer was sending out warning messages to them. I asked him how it was doing that I cannot remember what he said he asked "you are using windows OS correct?"
I said so I use a Mac he hung up when I said that. I just laughed and let it past. A few hours they call back. They have called several times and today they call claiming they are "Dell tech support" I do have a Dell laptop (How they know that?) They said my Dell was sending them warnings
bla bla bla. I told them I was running Linux they hung up. I laughed again and let it pass. Then an hour later they call back. Frustrated I told them I was not home and asked if they could call back. I am waiting on them to call back. I have made a whole drive backup with True Image. I am going to let them log in and I will be watching what they do. I got a text document on my desktop named "credit card info" don't worry all that is in it is
idiot typed all over it. I cannot wait for them to call. I am going to be very careful with this. I will be watching to make sure they don't harm my system. I could set up a VM and do this but don't really have time.

Okay,I messed up, my laptop (Toshiba L755) was infected and just after xmas I noticed my documents and pictures (everything for my 501.c.3 animal rescue) was GONE. I panicked and somehow wound up on the phone with ATS. They had me put it in safe mode and THANKFULLY (from what I saw) all my pics and docs were there!!! They did a remote in to my laptop and said it would be several hours and they would fix it, A WEEK LATER (with daily phone calls) NOTHING, and on the second day, everything was gone from safe mode too. I was furious and even tho they refunded my money, I still do not have my stuff back, I am heart broken, these docs and pics are SO important to my nonprofit work, it has been horrible... Can anyone help???

I believe that I posted the following in the incorrect heading "Software" when I should have posted it under hardware. Therefore I am posting it once again and hoping in desperation that someone will be able to help me with this problem. Thanking you in advance for any assistance!

Two weeks ago I purchased the Samsung Galaxy S tablet model: TS-700 with ?Kit Kat 4.4.2? which is exactly what I wanted. I ran into constant notification attempts by Samsung to get me to install Lollipop 5.0.2 which I do not want. I tried to evade these attempts but finally lollipop was automatically installed on my tablet without my permission. I turned it on to find the installation process in progress and a warning not to turn off the tablet. I hadn't thought to prevent this by disabling automatic updating. So I got blind sided by Samsung.
I now want to downgrade from lollipop back to Kit Kat 4.4.2 as I detest lollipop and it immediately started causing problems whereas Kit Kat was working like a charm.
Before attempting this, I am seeking a qualified tech persons knowledge, advice and instructions on the best way to do this. I am reasonably computer smart so I am confident that given precise instructions I can do it.

I support 2 labs where students log on to the domain. All the workstations are XP Pro. How do I copy a printer into "all users" profile so that everybody logging on sees the printer. I don't want to set the printer individually on each profile..

Log on as administrator, or yourself if you have admin rights. Add a printer as Local Printer and uncheck automatically detect, create a new port as Local port, where the port name is \\printserver\printername then just allow the wizard to complete.

Hi, little glitch. When you good people notify me of a related post I duly open the email and normally right click on the link and "open in a new tab". This works fine. If however I LEFT click on it, I get an empty box, centre screen and the pc locks and I have to hack thru' task mang to get going again. Not really a prob but I would like some info if possible.

I don't know if anyone has had to deal with them (hopefully not) but they are terrible. Got my computer in April and all of a sudden it quit loading up after a restart or shut down. So they diagnose it over the phone as a bad power supply. I send it in, they have it for a week and a half and sent it back today, so I turned it on and it has the exact same problem. I call them back and they say well it must be the motherboard. I can not believe that they didn't at least test the thing out to see if it worked before sending it back to me. Especially when I emailed them last week to check the status of my computer and they told me it was still going through the diagnostic testing process. Wouldn't any type of diagnostic test show a bad motherboard, I mean thats kind of important isn't it? So now I have to send it back in to them, and be without my computer again for probably another 2 weeks. The entire process has been a headache and I have to call them back tomorrow yet again because they couldn't process my "RMA number" because they were having problems with their system tonight. My guess is that they are using their own Gateway computers there too...Next time I'll spend the extra and get a Dell..

hey all...just came back from spending the holiday installing my mom's pc and getting her online. since she is pc illiterate, and because we are in different states, i am anticipating many long nights on the phone with her, since

so, i'm thinking about how to make this as painless as possible...f'rinstance: i'm wondering how i might set it up so i can access her pc via the internet, in order to intervene remotely and correct anything she might mess up....anything from helping her to edit a photo to runing a spyware scan on her system to changing an option in her browser. even better might be the ability to see her desktop when she's at her pc, in order to walk her through things live on the phone while we are both looking at the same thing. any suggestions how one might do things like this or any other suggestions for this kind of situation?

I bought Windows 7 from Amazon.com and when I called up Microsoft for support they told me that they don't support open windows 7 what ever that means. So I paid the same price but no support because I didn't buy it from Microsoft. I'm just confused. Can someone explain this to me or was the tech person just full of crap?

Yes, MS supports any retail copy with the best funded Tech Support in the business.

I also bought Amazon (for the free shipping) pre-order Upgrade and have gotten MS support already.

They are required by policy to troubleshoot to completion any issue, even elevating to a research team that communicates with the developer teams, as long as customer is cooperative.

As with any tech support you may get a bad agent or someone having a bad day. I always politely hang up and call back.

In the past by being appreciative and eager to learn, I have gotten a full education in clean reinstalls w/o bloatware, virus hunting, optimization, etc. - worth far more than the price of the product.

using my Internet Explorer 5.1 (Mac OS X) proxy server, typing in the Tech Support Guy website (www.helponthe.net) pulls up http://discussions.virtualdr.com/ instead.

But when I don't use the proxy server, helponthe.net works fine.

Any ideas?

Hi, Are you using two active security programs by any chance that have real time protection running? I see you also have Kaspersky.....did you mean on a different machine and not on this machine with the AVG issue? I realize it's a very basic question but we run into this quite often so just making sure. More than one antivirus / security suite type program running will usually cause weird issues like slowness and errors.

I setup my Apache on port 80. I set the Network domain to localhost and i set the server name for the name i got from dyndns.org. When i type localhost in my browser it works fine. When i type my Internal IP in my browser it works. I got the internal from ipconfig. btw im running this on Win XP Pro. When i type my external IP and my server name in the browser neither 1 of them takes me to the Apache page where it says to replace the page. I do not have a separate router. Im on ADSL and im pretty sure that my ADSL modem has a router built in. Does anyone know what the problem could be?? Can anyone give me private free tech support vis email or any messenger in IM?? Consider all the options available. Sites like and especially this one can solve most software problems. Really thorough books are available. I just pulled one containing 1101 pages just on Vista from my shelf. On a per inquiry basis, any tech can "share" your computer. If you're uncomfortable working inside the box, there has to be local or shipping help available. Your current "service" can't physically fix hardware anyway. With all the money you'll save, you'll be able to afford the new and hopefully error free computer when this one bids adieu.

Hey everyone, and thanks in advanced for your help. I'm having some issues with this very website (Tech Support Guy). Whenever I access it, I am normally supposed to be logged in. I am, and I will attempt to access a forum, post, etc. Then the website logs me out and reverts back to the original color theme.

Once I've logged back in, I will access a post or what have you, only to have been logged out -again-! Then I will log back in, and my browser will redirect me to the forum so I may post something myself. Then once I post something I have to log back in -again-! (and this happens whenever I click a new thread or whatever...it will probably happen once I am finished typing this post).

Anyway, if there is any advice on how to fix this that somebody could offer it would be greatly appreciated since I love this site and enjoy helping the community. It's just a hassle to have to keep logging in every 10 seconds.

I need to speak to a support tech in the US.  I was told I had this option when I bought my computer.  I am still in warranty, have a 3 year HP Care Pack.  I spent most of a night from 8:30 PM to 2:30AM on the phone with some guy that had me actually attempting to take off the side panel on my computer and move some plugs.  These people were rude, obnoxious and didn't help at all.  Now they want to come out and change my hard drive??????  They wanted me to do it at first but I told them no.  I run my home and business on this computer and i can't afford to be down for 3 days and lose all of the software I've paid for.  I don't have another computer to put the software on.  I need a United States technition.  I had them when I bought the computer directly from HP and used them, they were great and a real pleasure to work with.  They knew what they were talking about!!  Is there any way to get to one of these guys or girls again.  I had this all written down and cannot find the sheet anymore.

i m unable to open add/remove programs in the control panel.i tried out appwiz.cpl to open ,but there wasn't any response.

To post this threa I have had to turn off Zonealarm Pro. When I log in to Tech Support there is no problem but as soon as I try to access the forums I am immediately logged out. This happens to me with other forums and I have noticed also that I can only access the first page on EBay and not page 2 onwards.
I have looked at all the options on Zonealarm but I cannot see what I can do, it must be Zonealarm causing the problem as when I turn it off I have no problems. Thanks. Roger

Yesterday I was called by a Windows Tech Support Scam. I am not very tech-savvy and I was gullible and allowed them to remotely access my computer. When they asked for money that is when I wised up, but that was too late. I already gave them access to my computer.

I changed my bank account passwords. I loaded my files onto an external hard drive. I plan to return my computer to its original state, but I first wanted to find out what is to stop the scammers from just accessing my computer again?

I got such a call on my mobile phone a week ago, spoofing a "legit" number in PA on caller ID.
I strung the caller along for a while.
He hung up when I volunteered to give him my credit card info so that he could "remote in" to fix my "viruses".

Wondering if anyone else is getting calls from a Windows 8 Tech support person?  They called me 2 days in a row.  I heard her out for a while to see what the scam was, and when she told me that "a critical error had occurred on my computer and she wanted me to turn on my Windows 8 so she could help fix it" and that's when I hung up.

I wonder how many people do turn on their Windows 8 and follow her instructions....................

Microsoft Warns Of Tech Support Phone Scam
I know this has been circulating for a while but my mother received a phone call while i was there .
I took the phone away from her and talked with the man to find out what was going on .

He would not take no for an answer
even when i told him that there was no computer at this address he insisted on retelling me he was from microsoft tech support and that the ip had been flashing red at their end and that it was a virus problem .
Even after i had repeated that there was no computer to get infected he said when i read my emails all lights were flashing at their end

Now if this post stops one pc user from falling for this scam then i will be happy

It's coming up to three working weeks now since I bought the game Starwars Battlefront by Activision. When I first couldn't get the game to work, I emailed them, and my emails were being returned unsent. The next day, I phoned them, which is difficult as I don't have a landline and can't get a signal near my PC, so I told them the problem with emailing them and they sent me an email to reply to.
I replied to their email straight away with all the info they asked for, then I sent another with some additional info. After some time, they replied to the one I sent with additional info saying they had no record of previous correspondance. I've been repeatedly emailing them since with all the info they've asked for and have heard nothing, I've tried their head office a couple of times over the weeks to find out what's going on, but they don't reply either. Has anyone else had these kinds of problems with Activision and what did you do? I think that if I don't get anywhere by some time next week, I'll ask for a refund... but then how do you go about getting a refund???

INSTALLATION:

When I tried to install Starwars Battlefront for the first time, after getting the first disc to start loading, it seemed to be having trouble working out which disk it wanted and which was which.
I've just uninstalled the game to see if the same thing would happen using a different disk drive or to see if the game would run without the patch, but it's still the same.

After the first disk goes in, an error message comes up to say, 'The wrong volume is in the drive. Please insert volume BC.1 into drive X' I click okay, and it then imediately asks for disk 3 and wants the file 'data4.cab' from it. When I put disk 3 in and press okay, it still asks for disk 3. Then, a moment later, the first error message comes up again, 'Wrong volume...' and wants disk 1. I put disk one in and it immediately asks for disk 2. Is something wrog wit the way this game is installing and does this mean there's a missing file?

THE MAIN PROBLEM:

I updated Starwars Battlefront before I tried to play it for the first time. I have been through all the help files and forums I can find and can't get any help. The game seems to be working fine up until just before the page where you choose which class to play, sniper etc. where the screen goes black for quite a while while the music goes scratchy and fizzles out. I was recently duped and need to find out if my PC will have any issues as a result.

One of the programs on my computer crashed and I agreed to send in a Windows Error report. A few days after this (not sure if it was coincidental or not) I received a telephone call pertaining to be from Windows Technical Support. They told me I had a problem with my PC and gave me directions on how to access the event viewer. I did this and they showed me that there were a lot of "errors" within my PC.

They told me that they could help sort this out. They never asked for any money. They told me they needed access to my computer. They asked me to download a program AA-V3.exe from Ammyy. I did this but it would not let the person connect.

They then asked me to go to a website ShowMyPC. Which again I did believing they were from Windows. We connected through this site - the site said that it was connected anyway. The guy on the phone said that there was a problem and he couldn't access the PC - it must be running really slow. He then asked me for my passwords. At this point I was concerned and told him I did not believe he was from Windows and did not give him my passwords. I put the phone down and closed down the PC. Since then they have rung me back 10 times and I have put the phone straight down.

I have tried to log on to tech support with pogo and it tells me my log on and password are incorrect. So I go to set up a new account and it tells me my log on is already there. I can't get through to pogo to get this straightened out. It says I am there but also that I am not there.

I upgraded from norton internet 07 to N 360. When I power up computer I get a message
"Auto-Protect experienced an unexpected error 0x000003E8 3035,6"

When I tried to install N 360 got message "Extraction failed. File corrupt"

Norton online support instructed me to remove all existing norton with following link :

Did that, then the instruction was to click a link to reinstall N 360. Did that but still get the "Extraction failed. File corrupt"

Hi Im ross and I have really let my computer go. I have a huge ammount of security issues with my computer. Ive seen you guys solve some major problems and I was hoping you could do the same for me. Since there are a number of them I decided to create my own thread instead of filing this under an existing one.

1. A severe infestation of full screen pop ups of "Top Searches on teh Web" and pop ups asking me to install anti pop up software but for a price. I know pop ups are everywhere but these are the same ones on a daily basis that occur whenever I am connected to the internet.

2. A pop up that opens up to 50 blank IE pages and locks up my computer, also occurs when I am connected to the internet.

3. A file called "Links" in my favorite is constanly replaced although I delete it.

4. My AIM text boxs lock up and turn all my text into capital letters, forcing me to use caps lock to return them to normal size.

5. My computer allows me to install McAfee anti virus but something then causes a critical error when I attempt to scan my computer. I assume this is related to an existing virus.

6. My floppy drive fails to read floppys and claims that they are all unformatted disks, I dont chock this up to a hardware error but some sort of error within my machine.

7. My CDRW drive reads cds but only writes blank static on cds.

I bought an XPS 8900 four months ago. I had to call Dell tech support on May 25th because it wouldn't reboot without going to the bsd. It's got worse. I tried two brand new hard drives and a new windows 10. The operating system won't load without going to a new bsd. All the machine does is loop to a new bsd. I've spent countless hours with tech support and nothing is working.
I'm at a level 3 tech but I can't get a response, email or phone call. It's June 30th now.
What's considered a reasonable time before something is done. Not over 30 days. Thank god I have a laptop at home. The experience has been horrible. As of right now Dell still hasn't done anything and no one will talk to me.

I see that QVC most of the time now offers life-time technical support on their HP computers.  I realize there is a total differeance between a Warranty and Technical support.   So, can I get or purchase life-time tecnical support directly from HP when I purchase a new HP computer or at any time for that matter?  Remember please, I am NOT talking about warranty here just life-time technical support and I do know the difference.

My son just called me saying a window popped up saying something along the lines of "your computer may be infected.  call Microsoft tech support" and then they listed a number to call. Well, my son being the computer savvy expert that he is called the freakin number. He let whomever on the other end log into our computer and then told my son he needs \$200.00 to clean it up for us. Could anyone tell me what (if any) damage could have been done?? This is the kids computer, so, as far as i know there is no important login information on it. But it is connected to the house wifi and I just don't know if that could be an issue.

My grandfather got taken in by a Microsoft Windows Support Scam and I'm fairly certain that his laptop's got a bug that I can't get rid of.

What happened:

He got a popup (while using Internet Explorer and after downloading an Adobe update) that said there was a security issue and that he needed to call a number for Windows Firewall Service.
(I looked up the number and apparently other people have been taken in by this scam. Here it is on a Microsoft forum:

This is what the Popup said:

""windows firewall service has been stopped due to virus/adware on your computer. please visit www.scannow.com/support or call toll free 1 888 447 4192 for support. root-kits/spyware may have caused the security breach on your network location. call toll free 1 888 447 4192 for technical assistance."

So he called the number (1-888-447-4192) not knowing it was a scam and they said they were from Windows and that they needed remote access to his laptop to solve the security issue, which he gave them. (He said he did not give them any personal information, however.)

After he told me what happened, I checked out his laptop. He had about a dozen popups that wouldn't close and some malware programs were added, which I have removed.

Hello everyone, I am here today because my computer is infected with a tech support popup scam. I have 2 computers, a laptop and a desktop and both have the issue. I can add machine specificas later, but here is what I have done so far:

I have these softwares on my computer:
Panda antivirus
Malware Bytes
Spybot search and destroy

I also reset my browser. Google Chrome.

I scanned and followed directions with each program, but the popups keep coming.
I had started a post, but the popup stopped it. This one will be copied and pasted.
