BSOD after installing 'dell support center'

Q: BSOD after installing 'dell support center'

my machine is dell dimension with windows xp sp2.recently, as advised by dell people, i uninstalled the old 'dell support' and ind installed new 'dell support center'
but on restart i got BSOD and had to restore back.i tried it five times but always with the same result.currently i'm without any means to get help from dell, should i need it.
pl. help

A: BSOD after installing 'dell support center'

The BSOD error message in its entirety would be a good thing and one thought on this and this might solve the problem quicker, since Dell tech support told you to upgrade to the new help center and it went south I am only suggesting this because I have worked in tech support before (not with Dell) I would contact Dell tech support and have the BSOD error message ready for them. The tech support usually has all or most of the solutions for their software handy right there in thier database, and this will solve the problem a lot faster than here.

Started about a month ago - pops up over and over and over and over - about every five minutes or less.  I've got a Dell Studio XPS with Windows 7 Professional.  Another forum said to just uninstall Dell Support Center (Support Center Software) - but when I try to uninstall it - THE SAME STUPID WINDOW POPS UP ASKING ME TO INSERT THE SOFTWARE.  I tried doing a Browse and it's looking for DSC20.msi.  I haven't managed to find it yet.  I have at least found \Program Files(x86)\Dell Support Center but there's so many sub-directories...
I shouldn't have to be jumping through so many hoops just to uninstall a program.  This is driving me crazy and I haven't found an answer online yet.

Somehow, dell support software was deleted from my Dell 570 Inspiron Windows 7 software. I have tried several times to download but keep getting error messages that there is no software. It was working a week ago until I had to do a system restore. I have searched the net but cannot find an answer to reinstalling. Can anyone help me.

Disabling Services does nothing to conserve energy unless you have a ruwaway Process that is hogging your CPU which requires troubleshooting in other ways.

You should keep Win7 fully updated for best security and performance. Optional Updates will help keep your drivers current and can also be trusted and useful.

Use the Win7 firewall with a free lightweight AV like Microsoft Security Essentials or Avast 6.

Got to a web page that had bleeping as a link. Got Page not found message. In a command window did nslookup Got a not found message. Did nslookup, IP address was returned.Located the Dell Support Center process in Task Manager and clicked End, process stopped, was then able to uninstall Dell Support Center. Did another nslookup of bleeping, got a proper answer. Entered it in URL and got to Bleeping. So, is Dell Support Center blocking access to Bleeping? If so, is it blocking access to anything else?If you want to stop Dell Support Center (this is 2.01 IIR) look for sprtcmd.exe in Task Manager and kill it.

A few weeks ago I did two updates - one was the Dell Support Center update and the other was an update entitled KB951978. Since then, I'm unable to shut down my computer - I get an error message asking me to end "sprtcmd.exe". I hit "end now", and usually it shuts down OK. In addition, it's taking much longer for web pages to load and applications to run.

I'm scared to uninstall the updates - is it safe to do that? Everything was perfectly fine until then. I saw the other thread with tips on how to do it.

My question is: do I uninstall the Dell Support Center UPDATE or the entire thing itself? I'm afraid to get rid of it altogether.

Also, should I try uninstalling the KB951978 update? I have no idea or comfort level with what that is.

OK.....i am on an XP operating system on a dell. everytime one of the users logs off, we get the window that says "ending program sprtcmd.exe", and then we have to go and end program manually every time we log off. i read a similar post on here where someone was having that problem, and was told it was related to the dell support center, and they were advised to uninstall it. i tried to uninstall the dell support center, and this message pops up:

"Error 1306. Another application has exclusive access to the file c:/Documents and settings\Barb\Local Settings\Application Data\Support Soft\Dell Support Center\Barb\state\ logs\sprtcmd.log.
Please shut down all other applications then click Retry"

It will not let me click retry, i have to close out the little window or hit cancel, then it goes through a little more of the "windows configuring", and then i get a little window for "add or remove programs" that says "fatal error during installation" and then that's that. it won't let me uninstall the program!
i know this isn't a major problem or anything, but still having to manually click that window everytime i log off is quite aggrivating.
any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Hello I'm trying to install a new radeon vid card from Dell, following the instructions with the card I unistalled ( which doesn't make much sense since I can still use the onboard display) the old graphics card. Installed the new card, plugged in power plugged in one of the monitors and got nothing when booting into windows. I take the card out and I can still use the computer as if nothing has happened. Am I missing an uninstall, install step here or what? I'm no longer sure how to even boot windows 10 into safe mode. But not that would matter if I get no signal/display from the new card. Should I install the drivers from the accompaning CD from visiontek to get it work properly?

Running on a new XPS 8900.  Whenever Dell Support Assist runs, a Blue Screeen of Death appears.  I am now experiencing a Windows Blue Screen of Death daily -- it appears to be running automatically every 12 to 24 hours..
The Windows minidump identifies the failures as coming from the address GenHC.sys+1509ewhich is adriver to support a USBSer device.  I've contacted the vendor to see if they can provide a fix, no new updates are on their website.
SO, how can I either get a version of Dell Support Assist  that does not trigger the BSOD?
Or how can I prevent Dell Support Assist from running?
1)  Is there an option to disable it
2) What should I uninstall?
Win10 shows Dell SupportAssist 1.1.6664.93 is installed.

My install of Windows 7 Ultimate on a separate Boot Camp works until I try to install the Apple Boot Camp 4 Support Software. After I do so the system gives me BSOD on restart. I've tried the following suggestions from other threads:

- Renaming/removing AppleHSF.sys and AppleMNT.sys
- Removing BootCamp.exe from msconfig.exe

I've attached the error dumps associated with the BSOD, as well as a screen shot of the BSOD screen.

Windbg suggests that wininit.exe is likely causing the problem.

We are Dell resellers and had placed an order for 43 Laptops - Dell Latitude 3560 with Dell on 13th June, 2016. We delivered them to our customer on Friday 17th June, 2016. On Monday 20th June we discovered that all the Laptops are faulty and are not functioning properly. They have not been able to use a single system due to touchpad issues in the entire lot
We have made innumerable calls Dell to resolve the problem, but the team is unable to identify and rectify the problem.
We have spoken to our partner account manager, regional account manager, Service Specialist and Escalation Team, requesting them to provide us with a solution at the earliest as their work is getting hampered. Recently I have been trying to upgrade one of our computers (Dell Dimension 9150/XPS 400) to Windows 7. While this Dell model is old, a brief search on the internet shows that several people have gotten Windows 7 to work on this model just fine, so I'm inclined to believe this should be doable.

Hi there,

Long time lurker, first time poster here. Your forums have provided a lot of support to me in the past and I am usually able to sort out most things, but this BSOD issue has really got me stumped. So thanks for all the help in the past and thanks in advance for any help you can give me with this issue.....

I have had my computer for a few years and it has always ran fine - with stock parts. A few weeks ago i upgraded a few things and this has resulted in a really unstable system and multiple, random BSODs (or should that be BSsOD?!)

In the same sitting I changed a few components as follows....

I swapped out the old GeForce 310 GFX card for Nvidia Quadro 600 (now updated to driver 311.50)
I swapped out all my RAM (4 x Kingston 1GB Sticks supplied with the machine) and replaced them with 4 x 2GB Sticks Kingston Value RAM - Making sure it was compatible with the computer as per the System guide from DELL - all have been tested with Memtest and no errors found
I started using a cheap 4 way USB splitter to connect a Wacom tablet and a USB Lacie drive
Since I had the tower open, I swapped out my 3 year old CMOS battery and replaced it

That's about it.... After that, upon startup I would have multiple BSODs and it has never gone away...

It happens pretty consistently when the machine is started after a few hours off... like overnight - but having a fresh CMOS battery in it, this makes no sense to me...

If you persevere and keep rebooting up after the crashes, the m... Read more

A:BSOD on Dell Inpiron 560s after installing new RAM and new GFX card

Kingston "Value Ram" has a history of incompatibility problems and should not be used. Regular Kingston is OK. I used to do a lot of support on the Dell users support forums and the Kingston Value RAM was always problematic. I've seen similar posts on other forums about the Value RAM.

Because many Dell's have a history of compatiblity with non-Dell branded memory (there is no pattern on the compatibility issues except for the "KVR" memory) we always recommended Crucial Memory as it is guaranteed to work in Dell's. Computer memory upgrades for Dell Inspiron 560s Desktop/PC from

The memory may not be the problem but that is the first suspect.

As you replaced the memory and the video card, did you do both at the same time? It is best to only do one thing at a time, then if problems develop its easier to troubleshoot.

Yesterday I clean installed the Dell factory image using reset PC. All went well but when I checked Reliability History it showed an unsuccessful application reconfiguration warning for Dell Data Vault when Dell Support Assist was installed. During Dell Support Assist installation there was an earlier successful application installation and reconfiguration of Dell Data Vault (version but that was successfully removed 15 minutes later for Dell Data Vault (version ...this was when the unsuccessful application reconfiguration warning was flagged. At the same time  a successful application removal message for Dell data Vault (version is also shown. Im not sure if that means now that I don't have Dell Data Vault installed.
Is this anything to be concerned about? Im not even sure what Dell Data Vault does. Is there anything I need to do or will it successfully update itself later on?

If it's a file on your C drive, then you may need to repair your help files. If the file is an http: then log onto the net to continue.

Help and Support Center page needs help. Opens up extremely slow now that a clean install has been done. At one point the H&S Center page would not open. System restore would not work. Defragmenter could not finish all files. Restarting the computer did help. This has been happening since a complete cleanup done to erase, zero, reformat and reinstall all programs needed for normal operation... if there ever is a normal operation. These problems occurred after MS updates and .net Framework installed .NET 1, SP and 2 installed. All items working properly prior to updates and the .NET install. It wasn?t that bad erasing everything, zeroing , reformatting and putting WXP HE back on. Hi, on an XP machine, I disabled Windows XP Help and Support Center a number of years ago (before SP2 came out) by disabling the Help and Support in services. I cannot seem to re-enable it. I have tried various 'fixes' found on the Inet but none seem to work.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Hello there,
Lately support center doesn't want to work, after some seconds a "the application stopped working. windows is looking for a possible solution" message pops up. needless to say, windows never found a solution. I tried uninstalling and doing a clean install of all the dell support suite several times with no luck, i don't have any antivirus on, except windows defender.
I'm trying to run SC version 1.0.665.2 on win 8.1,
I wanted to run a scan because after installing win 10 trial version and going back to win 8.1 my workstation is acting pretty weird (and sloppy).

Hope someone out there can help!

Help and Support Center provides a centralized facility through which
users can obtain assistance on a variety of topics. For instance, it
provides product documentation, assistance in determining hardware
compatibility, access to Windows Update, online help from Microsoft,
and other assistance.

A security vulnerability is present in the Windows XP version of Help
and Support Center, and results because a file intended only for use
by the system is instead available for use by any web page. The
purpose of the file is to enable anonymous upload of hardware
information, with the user's permission, so that Microsoft can
evaluate which devices users are not currently finding device drivers
for. This information is then used to work with hardware vendors and
device teams to improve the quality and quantity of drivers available
in Windows. By design, after attempting to upload an XML file
containing the hardware information, the system deletes it.

An attacker could exploit the vulnerability by constructing a web
page that, when opened, would call the errant function and supply the
name of an existing file or folder as the argument. The attempt to
upload the file or folder would fail, but the file nevertheless would
be deleted. The page could be hosted on a web site in order to attack
users visiting the site, or could be sent as an HTML mail in order to
attack the recipient when it was opened.

Just go to System Tools under Accessories in the Start Menu and you should find System Restore under the System Tools menu. I'm not sure but it sounds like you're running Windows XP. If so then this should work fine for you.

Do a repair install of XP...or run the sfc /scannow command.Chances are your registry cleaner has deleted/damaged some system files that are needed.Bleeping Computer DOES NOT recommend the use of registry cleaners/optimizers for several reasons: Registry cleaners are extremely powerful applications that can damage the registry by using aggressive cleaning routines and cause your computer to become unbootable.

The Windows registry is a central repository (database) for storing configuration data, user settings and machine-dependent settings, and options for the operating system. It contains information and settings for all hardware, software, users, and preferences. Whenever a user makes changes to settings, file associations, system policies, or installed software, the changes are reflected and stored in this repository. The registry is a crucial component because it is where Windows "remembers" all this information, how it works together, how Windows boots the system and what files it uses when it does. The registry is also a vulnerable subsystem, in that relatively small changes done incorrectly can render the system inoperable. For a more detailed explanation, read Understanding The Registry.
Not all registry cleaners are created equal. There are a number of them available but they do not all work entirely the same way. Each vendor uses different criteria as to what constitutes a "bad entry". One cleaner may find entries on your system that will n... Read more

A:Help and Support Center page needs help... detailed

Hi rlmarr

Here's a page over a Kelley's Korner with half-a-dozen tricks for trying to get Help and Support happy again --- note that you'll have to scroll down quite a ways to get to the "Help and Support" category ---

I think a decent quick-fix try might be to reinstall the .inf file for the Help and Support service - you might or might not need your Windows XP CD (because if you still have your XP SP2 .cabs on your hard drive - which you likely do, if you didn't manually delete them - the files needed will be right there) ---
Go to C:\Windows\inf\pchealth.inf. Right click and choose install.

If your system has a modest amount of system memory (RAM) installed, look in Task Manager (in the "Performance" tab) to see if the amount of physical memory installed isn't enough to cover what is needed by your background processes + your running applications -- this would cause your computer to have to use the page file extensively, and slow things down dramatically from time to time.

Best of luck
. . . Gary

I am very disappointed to know that Windows 8 Media Center would not support Blu-ray. We would need third party software for this. So officially Microsoft is not supporting the Blu-ray format. This is really a disappointment as this shows that Microsoft is somehow moving away from the PCs (desktops/laptops) and going forward with the mobile devices. And the future of desktops and laptops are doomed. As a user of desktop, a few years ago I was looking forward to the Blu-ray era after the DVD era and was hoping that Games, software etc. would would soon be available in the Blu-ray format but it seems that Microsoft has decided to abandon desktops and laptops. Now I wish if there is some alternative OS to Windows!

Windows 8 Media Center does not support Blu-Ray

A:Windows 8 Media Center does not support Blu-Ray! :(

Fees to include blu-ray support in their native player would have been expensive for microsoft, that is why it is not included.

One can download the free media center pack to get native dvd in windows 8.

One can also download free third party player VLC and the associated blu-ray libraries and get support for blu-ray in windows 8.

For some unknown reason help and support center for windows xp takes over the cpu locking down my system. It even locked things up while in Safe Mode. When online at times I've also had firefox help open up in multiple tabs that will keep multiplying unless I close firefox. This even happened in Opera as well. At first I thought it was related to my Alps touchpad or the software controlling it apoint.exe. Apoint.exe was also locking up my system until I disabled it from startup wth Autoruns. I have since disabled helpsvc which controls XP Help and Support Center, but I've still had episodes of firefox tabs opening up to firefox help. Now when I go to Start and click Help and Support Center, nothing happens. I opened up the task manager and what happens is the process "Helpctr.exe" appears, but then it disappears. He says our computer is sending out error messages every time we're on the web or something like that, might be from a virus or some kinda windows errors. We have 5 computers, I think I'm clever by asking him which one he's talking about and he replies "the one running Windows 7".

It doesn't really affect me since I never used Windows Media Center. If I ever needed a Media Center, I would just take one of my old computer and transform it in a Media Server. However, they are apparently working on something for people that still wants to read DVDs on Windows, so they'll probably propose an alternate program.

Help and Support Center provides a centralized facility through
which users can obtain assistance on a variety of topics. For
instance, it provides product documentation, assistance in
determining hardware compatibility, access to Windows Update,
online help from Microsoft, and other assistance. Users and
programs can execute URL links to Help and Support Center by
using the "hcp://" prefix in a URL link instead of "http://".

A security vulnerability is present in the Windows Me version of
Help and Support Center, and results because the URL Handler for
the "hcp://" prefix contains an unchecked buffer.

An attacker could exploit the vulnerability by constructing a URL
that, when clicked on by the user, would execute code of the
attacker's choice in the Local Computer security context. The URL
could be hosted on a web page, or sent directly to the user in
email. In the web based scenario, where a user then clicked on
the URL hosted on a website, an attacker could have the ability
to read or launch files already present on the local machine. In
the case of an e-mail borne attack, if the user was using Outlook
Express 6.0 or Outlook 2002 in their default configurations, or
Outlook 98 or 2000 in conjunction with the Outlook Email Security
Update, then an attack could not be automated and the user would
still need to click on a URL sent in e-mail. However if the user
was not using Outlook Express 6.0 or Outlook 2002 in t... Read more

I have 2 questions:
1. Why Microsoft's Netflix App for Windows 10, DOES NOT accept basic commands from their own Microsoft Media Center Remote Control like for example PLAY, PAUSE, FF, etc..?
2. Why Microsoft's Netflix App for Windows 10, DOES NOT support 4K streaming.
I have a super fast computer with a 4K monitor and an Nvidia GTX 1080 GPU.
I could watch Netflix 4K content on my 30" 4K PC Monitor....
Could someone tell Microsoft that they are super outdated....? What the heck are these guys doing. I regret I did not buy an iMac.

Hello to all,   I recently did a clean reinstall of Windows XP (Home) on my Dell Dimension 2350. All went fine. Now I need to install the correct drivers. I have the Dell Resource disc and this is where the problem starts.    As noted elsewhere, after the reinstall the screen display of the Resource disc is as it would be in "Safe Mode". I was aware of this. As such, the Resource disc Search Criteria screen was a bit larger than the monitor screen. I was able to size it to fit the screen but this is really not the problem it is the following: The Search Criteria options I have from the drop down menus (on screen) are as follows:System Model:   All, Dimension C521, DXC061, Dimension DXP0G1, Dimension E521, DM061, XPS710    (Which, if any, do I pick?)Operating System: (I think I got this one)   All, Windows XPTopic:   (Maybe this one too)   All, Applications, Dell Diagnostics, Diagnostics, Drivers, Utilities   For the life of me I cannot figure out the exact drivers I am to install*. Windows XP only appears in the Operating System menu. I pretty much know the install order but as I said, I'm a bit confused about selecting the correct drivers from the disc. This computer is not connected to the internet at the moment so I can't download and use any sort of driver detection program. Other searches have confused me further and have provided no specific answer to this problem.&nbs... Read more

A:Installing drivers after Windows XP reinstall on Dell Dimension 2350 using Dell Resource disc

You need, in installation order:

Chipset driver
Video driver (depends on which video card)
Audio driver
Network driver (depends on which you have)
Modem driver, if you use a dialup modem

Go to the Support page and put in your Service Tag. It should give you the drivers you need. You can download them on any PC and copy onto a USB stick for installation on the 2350.
You only need the applications, if you actually use them (eg, Roxio, Jasc Paintshop, etc).
Then install your antiviral software and get online to the Microsoft Update site for all the patches and updates.
Keep in mind that XP is no longer supported by Microsoft and they stopped releasing security fixes for XP and IE9, more than 1 year ago. So they're both full of security holes and put your personal data at risk.

Hello everyone, I have a problem that is driving me crazy. I am able to access all my channels when viewing them on my Windows 7 laptop using Media Center. When I hook up a HDMI cable to the laptop and connect it to my TV I get the following error.."display driver error the video playback device does not support playback of protected content". I have updated the video card drivers and this issue still persists. Does anyone have any ideas to solve this. I am using a HDHomerun Prime and this is the only way I have to watch live TV on my TV. Thanks in advance for everyone's help

A:Windows Media Center display driver error the video playback device does not support

"display driver error the video playback device does not support playback of protected content"

Infers the content/media that you are playing is protected and/or the HDCP handshake is not taking place. This is likely a hardware issue. The video chipset (ie: HDMI port) or the TV does not support HDCP.

Try viewing a different channel or content.

I upgraded my XPS L701X to windows 10 - I had audio problems so reverted back to windows 7. I still have audio drop outs and stutters. I've given up looking for a fix and want to re-set my laptop to factory config.
I no longer have the original factory disks. How can I get a set of original factory install (windows and Dell drivers etc) that came with my machine in the first place. I had this laptop from new and have it registered with Dell but my warrenty ran out long ago.  I can't seem to find a way to speak to Dell to order a set of disks.any suggestions?

I have a dell computer with Windows XP home. When I recieved my computer, I never recieved my operating system cd. Now, I find that my windows is corrupted and I can't even get into safe mode without a blue screen. I looked up the stop error, and found a microsoft support page with troubleshooting suggestions. Unfortunately, most of them require the use of the Windows XP cd, so I couldn't fix the problem.

I called Dell support, and they told me I am out of warranty. They said that they can only mail me the OS cd if I'm under warranty. I don't understand this because whenever someone buys windows, they have a license to use the OS on a computer. The license allows me to reinstall windows on the same computer. I don't see why a warranty should even be an issue. Am I incorrect? Is my license basically void because my OS is corrupt?

Has anyone heard of this situation? Should I try to go after Dell for that OS cd? The idea that I have to buy a new copy of windows just to reinstall is foreign to me.

A:OS cd and Dell support

No, you are not out of luck. The XP CD, once provided with every Dell, is now available at the time of computer purchase for an additional fee of $10. The CD is irrelevant. If you know someone with a copy of XP Home, you can use their CD.

NOTE: There was most probably a copy of XP on your hard drive and a utility to make your own installation CD, only you didn't know it. If you can still boot to XP, look under All Programs for a Dell provided program. You may still be able to burn a copy of the XP installation CD.

You are licensed to run one instance of XP Home on your Dell computer. When you purchase a copy of XP, you are actually purchasing a product key which give you the right to run Windows XP on one computer (in this case, your Dell).

P.S. - There is a number affixed to your Dell that says "Service Tag." If you ever need to download drivers for your PC, go to Dell's support site and insert that Service Tag number. You will then be directed to the driver downloads for your particular PC.

Is this the way DELL Support generally works?
I raised a complaint that my under warranty laptop has some issue. Forget about right action, even after a week I am getting lot of emails saying we will call you to diagnose your issue.
I though DELL support will be good from now I will never recommend anyone DELL laptops if my case is not solved soon.

A:DELL Support :P

How did you contact Dell? Are you sure you actually contacted Dell? Many scams are in placed using fake web sites that will be looking to take your money. If you call or do an on-line Chat with Dell, they will help diagnose the problem at that time. If you e-mail, it's going to take more time.

I am finishing up recovering from a malware episode.  Thanks to boopme and all you other fine people.
Now I could use some new help.
I am missing the help center.  I am on Windows XP Sp3.  I ran SFC and followed directions which was Go to c:\windows\inf\pchealth.inf.  Right click to copy and install dataspec.xml from my copy of Windows xp from I386.  That is where my problem starts.  I can not find that file dataspec.xml on my copy of Windows XP and start the re-install.
It seems like dataspec.xml does not exist.  Any advice out there?  Am I looking wrong, or is there another way I can recover the help center.
Thank you ahead of time!

A:Need help re-installing the help center

I would simply reinstall XP SP3, since it contains many files which have been updated...and it may reflect the missing file you reference.
Reinstalling SP3 cures many similar problems, IME.
Click Download button at to download SP3 to your desktop, then install it from there.

I just finished a two-day marathon that started with McAfee Techmaster and migrated to Microsoft Support.  8 1/2 hours on Sunday, 2 hours today.  The latest Windows 10 Update apparently had some problems, resulting in the disabling of the Start icon, Cortana, Notifications Icon and more.  McAfee could not figure it out apparently, and the first online, chat Microsoft IT support person totally failed after nearly four hours of effort.  Another couple of hours on the phone with another Microsoft IT expert looked like a success until I encountered another glitch this morning with my Outlook Contacts being missing and some kind of restore function returning them but then I could not sign back into the computer.  So, the last person I spoke with resolved that problem, and the laptop seems to be operating normally.
My question is whether or not Dell Support personnel are trained and have access to Microsoft command codes, etc. to remedy Windows 10 problems?  If not, I am beginning to think that a person needs multiple support contracts to handle all the various problems encountered by PCs and Windows Operating Systems - as opposed to Apple.
If I am correct, I would need the following tech support contracts:
Microsoft for Windows 10; Dell for Dell-specific problems; McAfee for security-related problems, and maybe someone else to deal with "all the rest"?
If someone could clarify this issue, it would be appreciated.  I paid for a four-year... Read more

I am returning the Dell described below. Decided to do that on or about Sept.23 and I began applying to Dell for their RMA number. The timing of my ordering and then receiving the Dell was an almost impossible time. I am blessed with the C.O.P.D. disease and a head cold began to make it's presence known---and how it did!! Still have it and you never want the combination of these two "killers" to hit you together. I began to have my anxiety depleted when I could not get in touch with Dell; or rather no contact with any sympathetic soul and in fact, it was pretty much just the opposite. Support in India is strictly for no one. Well, they got my Scotch/Irish anger burning and I didn't give up---it was like not being able to contact anyone at Dell Support. I really and truly felt helpless; it was like no one was home.
Dell kept saying that I had 21 days to return the computer and I had among the several items in the computer box this one page of printed info with Dell logo in several places so I scanned it and sent it attached to one of my many emails to anyone at Dell I could find a name for. Today, I got my answer. Who ever approved it said he(?) was making an exception and gave his approval. Don't really see how an exception was made when the "letter" I scanned and sent to them clearly said 30 days and in which I was well within the boundary. I did threaten Dell with letting PCMag and Smart Computing know about their lack of support and commu... Read more

Hello folks,
My Dell Studio XPS 1640 won't boot properly. Windows 7 64-bit. It tries to fix itself, can't, and can't identify the problem...Called Dell...they sent me the recovery discs, which I had to pay for. Fair enough, it is out of warranty....then they transfer me no less than EIGHT times, dis-connect me once and THEN tell me it will me more $$$ to tell me how to use the discs! So I am beyond mad that they didn't mention these "additional" charges until I received the discs and called them (like they told me to) to install them. The idea is to install without losing any of my data that is on the machine. I want to boot the machine from the disc, but it won't allow me. I can only select to boot from the hard drive....which is not working! I am an old COBOL programmer, and DOS is but a dim memory. In theory I should get to the command prompt and look for boot.exe? I just can't remember....Can anyone please help before I just give up and make this thing a boat anchor? Many thanks in advance! And I think I am going back to Toshiba after this!
