XP Tablet PC: Diagnose "tcserver.exe" memory leak?

Q: XP Tablet PC: Diagnose "tcserver.exe" memory leak?

While doing a defrag on my Tablet PC the system experienced an error and shutdown. After restart I was looking at my running programs in task manager and saw one I didn't know about (tcserveer.exe). I Googled it and came across references to a Microsoft patch (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=895953) that fixes memory leak problems with this Windows configuration. The article says that users should NOT install the patch if the memory leak is not a problem. "this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem"

My problem is this. I don't know how to diagnose a memory leak. Wikipedia tells me "Memory leaks may not be serious or even detectable by normal means." The reason I'm asking is that if left alone and running say for 8+ hours my computer always crashes. This is normally not a big deal but makes me nervous. Can anyone give me a recommendation about installing this hotfix (KB895953 - Memory Leak in Windows XP Tablet PC Edition)?

Thanks.

I've heard this phrase thrown around a bit, and never had the sense that it actually meant anything. The "metaphor" of the phrase seems a bit false, as if memory is a "bucket" that has a "leak".

I thought about posting this in the Hardware>Memory subforum, but it seems to me that if this is a real condition, it would have more to do with XP and the Applications are doing with the memory, rather than a problem with the memory itself.

Is there REALLY such a thing as a "Memory Leak", or is this some sort of made-up phrase that people use to describe conditions they really don't understand ?

A:What is a "Memory Leak" ?

There is certainly such thing as a memory leak, and it's cause is due to very idiotic programmers.

For an application to implement memory it must allocate it (Request permission to use it from the kernel), once the memory is no longer needed it must be free'd (Returning ownership to the kernel for other uses).

A memory leak occurs when an application allocates memory, but fails to free it. Since the memory is technically still owned by the application (Even though it's not using it), the kernel cannot allow other applications to use it.

Simply put, a memory leak is when an application forgets to release ownership of memory. Thus, the memory is wasted.

NOTE: Once an application (Process, rather) terminates, the memory will be returned to the kernel. This is because the kernel keeps track of such things.

Hello guys, the last week I've been strugling with these nasty BSODs. At first I thought it was my HDDs as ntoskrn.exe somewhat hinted towards that from googling it. My HDDs have been causing a lot of trouble earlier as well due to their somewhat long years of service. However, I've recently reformated my computer and installed W7 on a brand new Corsair Force GT 120GB SSD hoping the BSODs would go away, they didn't.

I googled BSOD and I stumbled upon this forum and I thought I'd give it a try. I'm somewhat desperate, as I need my computer working for both work, school and amusement.

I've been trying to run Memtest in order to test my memory but without any results. I'm also currently running on only on 4GB chip instead of two, to see if the problem still exists. Also, without any results.

This is the second time I'm writing this thread btw, I was just about to post it and my PC crashed.

Here is my two logs + dxdiag (last crash didn't generate a log oddly enough).

Here is additional hardware/gear that I use:

Razer Megalodon 7.1 Headset
Razer Naga
Logitech G19
Logitech C920 (Webcam)
Corsair 750W PSU

My temperatures are also good. Both CPU and MB idles at around ~25. GPU's all good too. I'm also using a Corsair 650D chassi with dustfilters at both air-income so dust is minimal. On top off this, I use airpressure to clean away dust somewhat regularly and I also did exactly this 2 days ago when I reinstalled the pc.

Hello everyone
I have this problem for more than 3 months for now...

The INSTRUCTION AT "0x00a96ce0"referenced memory at "000000000" couldn't be written".

That's always what i get when i restart my computer, just before screen goes dark.
I believe that it has to do something with Microsoft updates. The reason i believe this, is that i once reinstalled my PC and didn't have any problem until i didn't update my PC.
And i posted here that thinking my problem was solved but unfortunately i was wrong.

Please if you have any tips on this one let me know it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Hey guys. This morning I got a really strange error code. When I tryed to update Steam on my PC, this error message popped up;

"The instruction at "0x00172058" referenced memory at "0x00d1004". The memory could not be "read".

Click OK to terminate the program.

Lately, I have'nt been able to install WoW either, I install it all the way to 100% and then when I try to launch it, I obviously have to re-download all the patches but it prompts me that I have to install it again, even though it is all there.

Tryed downloading the full game digitally off of wow-europe.com too, I click run to get it started, nothing happens and then this message pops up.

"The instruction at "0x00182058" referenced memory at "0x0f070014". The memory could not be "read".

Click OK to terminate the program.

I don't know what's up with it. My freind told me to run a CHKDSK /R to see if there was anything wrong with my drive and it ran smoothly, although I must say it took about an hour or so.

So, that was complete, tryed to do it again and I still kept getting these error messages. But I saw something on my desktop that wasn't there previously. It is an error log. Here is the error log;

Problem:

Everything was running fine until yesterday, when my PC crashed with the BSOD giving me the "IRQL not less or equal" error. I ignored it and carried on- which resulted in the computer crashing with "Memory management" blues whenever I started something that was not the browser (It later started crashing on browser start too).

I first thought it was the temperature - Memtest95 and GPUtemp said otherwise.

So I started testing the RAM (taking one DIMM out) with Memtest86- It passed 4 cycles, so I shut the PC down and put the other DIMM in.

When I turned the PC on again, there was no signal sent to my screen, and none to my keyboard (and the HDD light on the front of the case did not start blinking like usual). The fans were running, so I figured something might be wrong with the DIMMs I put in. I removed the graphics card and plugged the screen into the motherboard.

Now the screen gets a signal, background lighting starts up, and then it shuts down to hibernation again. This repeats itself until the machine is shut down manually.

I got no idea what to do.

System specs: http://pastebin.com/DQwejZLx
I can not post the Minidump folder, since the PC can't start and I did not back it up. Sorry.

Thank you for your help.

In Windows XP, fully updated, I have several folders full of mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

But all the figures in the "Duration" column appear to be in "hours" and "minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03", but what I want is "minutes" and "seconds".

Any thoughts as to how to change this?

I recently had a virus on my computer. During the time of cleaning and removing infected files my computer came up with a error message that I can't seem to find help on. When my computer starts up, the first thing that pops up is an error message stating that there is a rundll32.exe - Application Error. The message says, The instruction at "0x010017f1" referenced memory at "0x01000003c". The memory could not be "read".

I have downloaded and run just about every program that I can find to attempt to fix this error. I have searched my computer and registry for any of the numbers in the error message with no results. I have installed and run multiple antivirus and maleware removal programs, but have not been able to remove this problem. I sure hope you can help me with this final problem in cleaning up my computer issues.

Thanks in advance for all of your assistance.

Hi Chuck McD and welcome to TSF.

When did you first notice the issue? Is it the same when you start in Safe Mode (tap F8 repeatedly when starting up your computer and choose Safe Mode from the options. It could very well be a program that you have recently installed that caused the issue.

Geekgirl had some good advice on this forum for another user that may help here. Can you try some of the advice that she gave and report back

I would also suggest you start a new thread in the ' Virus/Trojan/Spyware Help' section and give then all the details they require to help you as you had a prior infection that may not have been fully resolved.

Hi there,

Is your computer a desktop or laptop computer? What is the brand/model of your computer may I ask? Please provide your computer specs when you get a chance. By knowing your computer specs, we would definitely be able to troubleshoot your computer issue more efficiently. Have you installed any software or updates recently?

Try this, download "MEMTEST86+" and put the program onto a bootable media(e.g. CD). Afterwards, reboot your computer and boot your computer to the Memtest86+ CD. Then, follow the on-screen instructions, and scan your computer memory for any errors.

Did this error come up all of a sudden? The error titles "Application Error", possibly a program error conflict somewhere.

Not much in your log, but you should have a security analyst look it over

In the meantime, Run the System File Checker to see if it resolves your IE issue.

Go to the Run box on the Start Menu and type in:

sfc /scannow ( sfc if not reconized) (Note that there is a space between sfc and /scannow)

This command will immediately initiate the Windows File Protection service to scan all protected files and verify their integrity, replacing any files with which it finds a problem.

In all likelihood you will be prompted to insert the Windows XP CD.

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

I'm not the only person to have this problem. I received a private message from a member of another forum where I posted about this problem several weeks ago. That person also has the same problem with the duration field.

I recently received a brand new Lenovo Thinkpad P70, ordered with the basic 8GB of memory. I also ordered an additional 8GB of memory from Crucial, purportedly compatible with the P70. The P70 has four SODIMM memory sockets and can support up to 4x16GB=64GB total non-ECC DDR4 2133MHz storage with its 6th-generation i7-6700HQ/6820HQ Intel CPUs. It also can come with Xeon E3-1505M processor, which can handle 4x16GB=64GB of ECC memory.

I installed the 8GB of Crucial memory into one of the three remaining available memory sockets, not seeing anything in the documentation that it must be in a specific "paired" slot for best performance. In other words, the Lenovo memory came installed in what was slot #3 (located under the keyboard), with what I'm guessing is actually "paired" adjacent slot #1 next to it (also located under the keyboard). But I installed my additional 8GB of memory in what turned out to be slot #4, in an instantly accessible location on the underside of the laptop gotten to immediately after removing the bottom cover. The second adjacent "paired" (to #4) slot on the underside I assume would have been slot #2.

So I ended up with 8GB of memory in each of [what I believe to be] UN-PAIRED slots #3 and #4.

The net result is performance behavior shown by CPUZ as "single" rather than "dual" as I would have expected and certainly wanted to obtain.

The question is why? Is the issue that I didn't add the second 8G... Read more

When I look into the "Performance" tab of my TaskManager then there are the following values:

Total: 4014
Cached: 1299
Available: 2697
Free: 1532

Hmm, What is the difference between available and free space?
Shouldn't this be the same?

What means cache?

From my point of view there should be a value "occupied by running prgms" and "free".

Peter

A:Diff.between "available" and "free" physical memory?

Available is the only one that matters. Available shows what is capable of being used by Programs. Without paging other lower priority processes out of memory. It is a combination of both Cache and Free.

I know that this mode turns off original hardware keyboard and touchpad. But will external USB keyboard work? Seems it should but is there a proof?
Thanks in advance for answers.

I have a Yiynova tablet monitor and its been working fine for about a month. I recently tried to download the beta version of a NVIDIA GeForce update (bad idea) and had to reinstall a previous version. After that, things started to go south for my tablet.

I uninstalled and reinstalled the tablet driver, and tried to plug it in a different USB port and it came up with the same message.

Is there a step that I'm missing?

I have dual screen setup, and that's working fine, but the driver that senses the pen just isn't installing, even though I installed the driver program.

I appreciate any ideas on how to fix this.

A:Yiynova tablet monitor "device driver failed to install"

The problem wasn't solved, but I believed I narrowed down the problem. The driver doesn't seem to fully install.

WINDOWS 10 on an HP Slate 2! Steve Balmer's "iPad Killer"
Anyone remember the HP Slate? Steve Balmer (of Microsoft) showed it in CES JUST before the iPad presentation (see pic below) and presented it and Microsoft's real answer to this "iPad" or "iTablet" no one had yet seen. He showed had it could be used as a ebook reader (silly Balmer) and how it was really a computer in your hand. But with Windows 7 it needed a stylus (even though it had a full 5 finger touch screen.
But FINALLY With windows 10. it's the iPad killer everyone really wanted.... (Well back then)
Windows 10 can be installed EASILY on the HP Slate 2 and probably the HP Slate 500.
How? Didn't you get the "we're still validating" message.
YES I DID. THEN I IGNORED IT ;-)
Here are the steps to get your HP Slate 2 (and probably Slate 500 to WINDOWS 10
1) Make sure you have 3 GIGS free (more like more than 7 GIGS) in your hard disk.
2) GO to your control panel (no matter which version of windows you have installed) and make sure you run the "WINDOWS UPDATE" and have it update until there are NO MORE UPDATES (This IS important no matter which version of windows you have running because you need the updates that gives you the little windows 10 logo you have to click on. more on that below)
If you're on windows 8 (not 8.1), UPGRADE to windows 8.1 (this IS required. the updates to windows 10 is from windows 7 or Windows 8.1, NOT 8) and also update until you ca... Read more

I have been recently getting a lot of BSOD on my Thinkpad "x200" tablet. It may be caused by the fact that I am using a refurbished x201 tablet motherboard with rest of the components from a dead x200 tablet. However, it was working perfectly before I cleaned installed it on last week and I had the Frankenpad working since spring break. I don't know if it started before or after I installed 8gbs of PNY ddr3 ram. I believe it happened after I corrected a Machine code error 2200 on my laptop (lack of serial and model number in bios) and added a Intel 6300 wireless card.

Details:
? 64 bit
? clean installed to Windows 7 Professional upgrade (via usb, used ISO from digital river and made the usb bootable using Universal USB Installer from pendrivelinux.com)
? Age of laptop: unknown, motherboard was a refurbished product I got during Spring break.
? Current OS installed is 4 days old.

Thanks for your help.

The one crash included was caused by a memory exception probably by an unknown driver

Since you added ram recently I would run Memtest

Download a copy of Memtest86 and burn the ISO to a CD using Iso Recorder or another ISO burning program.

Boot from the CD, and leave it running for at least 5 or 6 passes.

Just remember, any time Memtest reports errors, it can be either bad RAM or a bad motherboard slot.

Hi,

My operating system is Windows 7 32 bit.
I am using Laptop not Tablet, but when i look for navigator.userAgent, it says "Tablet PC" word in it.

I am thinking it is a bug.

I am not looking for a solution where i need to stop the "Tablet PC Input Service" windows service to not to show "Tablet PC" word.

My understanding is as long as i use Laptop i should not see "Tablet PC 2.0" word in navigator.userAgent.

If it is not a bug, how to differentiate between Laptop and Tablet.

Thanks in Advance

A:"Tablet" word shows up in IE for Windows 7 32 bit OS

One of the main differences is that on a Tablet PC you use a "stylus" or your fingers on the screen to operate it (touch-screen), whereas with a laptop you use either the touchpad or an external mouse and don't touch the screen at all.

The famous iPad from Apple is one example of a tablet

My office just upgraded, and I can no longer use Windows XP. On this system, I was able to add a separate taskbar to facilitate quick access to commonly-browsed folder locations on our vast network, and another one expedited the launching of useful programs and lists. Each task on each taskbar was represented with a big custom icon to save eye strain. I had them installed in opposite vertical margins, and they were set on auto-hide to keep them out of the way when not being used. Just move your mouse pointer to the left or right margin, and BAM! Sorry for the cliche, but I really got used to the convenience of what I had set up, and I just don't think I can be as efficient without anything comparable.

Now there appears to be nothing comparable in the Windows 7 GUI, and it's making me sick with rage! I see only the option to put a "toolbar" on an existing "taskbar", and no option to create any additional taskbars! This cramps up your one-and-only taskbar, plus the tiny toolbar access buttons require way too much precision for anything that's supposed to be quick. When you've figured out how to bring up that ridiculous button, the list that it yields is small enough to cause painful eyestrain - nothing efficient, much less cool about this at all! I have seen customization options in other OS GUIs that may have resolved some of these issues, but I see none such in W7.

I have tried every google search string that I can think of, and found... Read more

Hi,

When our website users click on an html attachment embedded on a web-page in IE9, the download manager will not display the "Open" option. It will only display "Save" and "Cancel" which our users don't like, having to save the
html document in a folder to open it. Whereas, when downloading attachments like pdf, word etc. all three options are displayed.

Is there any setting to tweak , which will display all the 3 options for HTML attachments as well?

A:IE9 download manager will not display "Open" option (only "Save" and "Cancel" is displayed) for downloading HTML documents.

Hi,
As you know, the Open-Save-Cancel dialog box helps you prevent your computer from affecting by virus while downloading.
So I suggest you test to reset all zones to a lower level temporarily and then please attempt to download this html attachment again.

However, since you can normally download the other documents, I suspect there is some restriction in the website which you are trying to view. I recommend you to contact the administrator of that website if possible.
could you please send me the link of the website from where you are trying to download the html attachment?
Thanks!

I just started getting the following error message today:

'Explorer.EXE - Application Error
The instruction at "0x71ab6a55" referenced memory at "0x71ab6a55". The memory could not be "written".'

It happens on startup, and if I choose to click on something, several programs such as NOD32, my firewall, or my Creative Volume Panel may close. I used the computer earlier today and did not install anything in between this morning and when I got home. I also updated Windows XP, but it did not do anything.

Does anyone know what I can do about this? A Google search of this error did not return much.

Double the values at least until you get more ram

Run sysdm.cpl and go to the location in my screenshot.

Be sure to click the "set" tab after making the change.

The default is typically 1 1/2 times installed ram. But if you have a lot of ram, this rule of thumb may not apply.

You may also benefit by running msconfig and selecting the startup tab.

There you can disable many programs from starting that are not always needed -- such as media player startups. Choices are easily reverseable.

I would very much like to find a Win 8 tablet (or ultrabook laptop) with available "cradle" or detachable keyboard fitted with a variety of ports. The ports on the cradle or detachable keyboard should enable connection to an external monitor, hard drive, printer etc. In other words, one must be able to remove the tablet or ultrabook from the attached external devices without having to pull out / insert any USB plugs or other plugs. If you know of such a tablet or ultrabook, please give me the full model number. The brand name is usually not enough to pin-point a specific computer.

A:Which Win 8 tablet or ultrabook comes with "cradle"?

The Asus Vivo RT has extra ports on the keyboard portion. The tablet detaches from the keyboard, so you can leave things plug into that if you want.

reason: computer is not properly shut down
some files are infected by a virus

Plan B: Try to download Fedora11 live CD using a torrent down loader. http://www.picktorrent.com/download/...1-x86_64-live/

And burn it to a CD-r and boot it (don't install) it's a Live OS on a CD.
then check you Hard Disk Drive if all your files are still there.

Plan C: Open your laptop (if you have a knowledge to open it properly)
and try to put your Hard Disk Drive to another computer and check it
if you Hard Disk Drive is still working properly or damage

I want my ram to be fully utilised.. pls help

A:RAM (Random Access Memory) - "Shared Memory" , Windows shows less RAM.

128 - 32 = 96

Shared memory means that a part of your system memory is used by the video card and is not available for programs. You should be able to adjust the amount of shared memory in BIOS setup. Note that you will never be able to get the full 128MB unless you get a proper video card.

I have windows 7 64 bit and also running a ssd. Just a few days ago I've started to have an issue where after my computer is running for a couple hours all processes continually increase the amount of memory they are using until I get an out of memory error. Here is a pic of it around 75%. I have 8 gigs of ram (kingston) that before this never went above 4gigs of use, so not sure what is causing this suddenly.

Any help would be great.

Hi everyone!

Yesterday my HP laptop (Windows 7) started getting BSOD with various types of errors (mostly "STOP: 0x00000F4", "STOP: 0x0000007A", "c00021a" and one "missing %hs, c0000135"). Most of the time it restarts without any issues and works fine right after the BSOD and then an hour or two later I get a BSOD again.

I have tried restoring to Last Known Good Configuration, startup repair, hard disk check, virus scans and I also uninstalled any recently added programs I could think of and cleared up more than 50% of my hard disk space. None of these seem to have helped and I still get BSOD regularly.

I have attached the folder from the SF Diagnostic Tool and would appreciate any advice!
Thank you!

Ok so I'm using a custom visual style made by another user however I don't really like the buttons used that I mentioned above. The creator states it is acceptable to change the theme to however you like as long as you don't redistribute it anywhere.

Ok so I opened up the .msstyles file (using Restorator) located in the theme folder of this VS. I went into the images directory and located what seems to be the images used for the buttons. Intuitively, it seems like it would make sense to replace those images with different ones (perhaps from another visual style) and it should change them. However, would this actually work? Could the theme get messed up in some other way (like proportions or something if the new button images are smaller)? I don't know of any other way to change them that would be easy.

But I did run into another problem. For some visual styles I can't even locate those buttons in the images directory. Where else would they be?

Hi all,

So I'm kind of stuck.. I currently have the problem where I am in an endless cycle of "loading files" -> "Windows Boot Manager" (see: How To Boot Into Safe Mode On Windows 8 (The Easy Way)).
I have tried to load all of the options -- and none successfully load.
I also end up at a OneKey Recovery as well.. unfortunately, the laptop does not have initial backup or user backup images.
I have a Windows 8 CD for repairing purposes.. however, I cannot load the BIOS/UEFI to change the boot order to load the optical drives first. I have also tried to remove the CMOS battery to fix it.. did not work. .
Also - Windows Boot Manager:
Windows Setup [EMS Enabled] -- does not load properly (leads to OneKey Recovery) Safe Mode (does not load properly) Safe Mode with Networking (does not load properly) Safe Mode with Command Prompt (doesn't load - tries to boot and load all files onto partition that is too small.. can't change partition?)
Enable Boot Logging Enable Low-Resolution Video Debugging MOde Disable automatic restart on system failure Disable Driver Signature Enforcement Display Early Launch Anti-Malware Driver
Start Windows Normally
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I am using Windows 7 on my laptop and I have question about when to use "Home", "Work" and "Public" profile.

If I am logging in without setting password, and I am logging in network with "Public" profile, then will any other user, who can see my computer, be able to enter my computer and check the contents on my computer ?

I am connecting to a network and there are 6 other users connected to this network. In the set network location window, if I select the netwoek as "Home", does it mean that other 6 users will not be able to see my computer on network and if I use "Public", then all other six users will be able to see my computer on network ?

I really hope someone can help on this.

New build. MSI H81i mITX MoBo with Celeron G1840 (Socket 1150) and 1 stick of Corsair 4gb DDR3-1333 memory. 300watt PSU. One 500gb HDD and 1 DVD drive (both sata-3)

When I switch on the computer, all I get is 3 long beeps. No display. Nothing.

MSI uses the AMI BIOS, and according to their website: "3 beeps - Base 64K memory failure - bad memory".

Memory is fine (brand new and tested in another build). I removed and reseated it to be sure. Memory is in DIMM1 (of 2) closest to CPU.

There are separate Beep Codes for "memory", so I'm wondering what "Base 64K memory" is? If it were the CPU, that has its own Beep code as well, so I don't think it's the cpu cache.

I'm trying to build a HTPC for Mother's Day, so time is of the essence. Please help! TIA.

I see this error pretty frequently, with different addresses. I had it on my home system, and it only went away after I replaced the motherboard, which leads me to believe it's likely a hardware issue. It survived after multiple os rebuilds and DoD drive wipes, so I'm pretty sure it's not a software issue.

The "Diagnose Connection Problems" button in IE9 is causing issues for us, and I need to disable or remove it.  We have kiosks running Windows 7 Pro, and they are locked down with software that restricts user access to just Internet Explorer
9.  The kiosk connects to a wireless network, using a pre-configured static IP address.  The problem is, if there is a network outage that leaves the wifi up, but no Internet access, the first web page that fails to load presents the "Internet
Explorer cannot display the webpage" page, along with the "Diagnose Connection Problems".  If the user clicks this button, then Windows Network Diagnostics wizard begins to run. Under these conditions, this wizard determines that the problem
is that DHCP is not in use, and helpfully offers to remove the static IP settings and enable DHCP.  As there is no DHCP for this network, and the kiosk is locked down to only allow access to IE, it is effectively dead until someone from IT can physically
access the system.
I have tested and verified that, under these same circumstances (wifi is up, WAN is down, static IP configured) the Diagnose Connection Problems button will clear the static IP settings.  I need some means of removing or disabling this button.
Prior to IE9, it was listed as an addon that could be disabled, but that seems to no longer be the case.  Any help is appreciated.

A:Help interpreting "diagnose" option in game booster

Never heard of game booster before... But, are the errors your talking about the ones listed in event log? (allot to read and I skimmed through)

If they are, the first 10 might be explained here; http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2545227
MS says you can ignore them, however the article shows the error after installing windows 7 sp1. MS has a "fix" script that might stop them from happening.

The service control manager ones might refer to a ps2 keyboard driver. http://social.technet.microsoft.com...s/thread/40b5ed3e-0382-4f19-8941-57ef88fc8d01
one reply says if you have never plugged a ps2 keyboard in you will get the error, until you do at least once, or change a registry entry. (Read all information before you tweak anything in the registry, bad things can happen if you get it wrong)

The Schannel ones are a bit more tricky... most posts are for Win Server 08, but some say win 7 has the error. not allot of solution posts yet. All I can gleam from it is is is a site security certificate error. like the computer trying to use http instead of https..

All the above info is based on some yahoo searching and reading MS articles and help sites, this does not mean those are the answers. If they recently started with game booster, try uninstalling it and see if they go away.
GB might be disabling something, or simply showing an error report that you don't normally see.

I posted this on the spinrite usenet group but it doesn't look like there's much traffic there, so I thought I would thow it around to the experts here:
I have a 120GB Western Digital caviar drive that I pulled from a
friend's computer. The drive has showed some signs of trouble, but I
don't know whether it's just a few bad sectors or if I should just throw
it away. My friend had reformatted the drive as part of trying to
figure out what was wrong with his computer, so there's no data on the
drive that I care about. When I run spinrite (6.0), it chugs along fine
until it gets to 40.08%, at which point it bogs down in a way I've never
seen before (granted I've only used spinrite a few times before)...

- It goes into the Dynastat recovery screen for a while and then goes
back to the Graphic Status Display, where (I think) it stays for at
least several hours, without ever progressing beyond 40.08%

- The graphics display freezes up off and on - nothing changes for a
minute or two, and keyboard input isn't even processed while it's
"frozen". If I enter several keystrokes (like up or down arrows) I
think a few of them are queued up and processed when it unfreezes.

- The physical drive gets very hot. Not quite hot enough to burn my
fingers, but close.
As I said, I don't care about recovering data from the drive, so if
spinrite is having trouble with some sectors of the disk, I just want it
to mark... Read more

My Computer is very slow lately, some days it seems ok, others it crawls. Scrolling in sites is frustrating, takes a while to respond, then may go scroll fast. Sometimes the computer just doesn't respond & we have to re-boot it and it will behave a little better.

I think I need to scan it but don't know what scan or where to post. Can you direct me where to begin the diagnostics before I go buy another computer, possibly unnecssarily?

Properties: It is Dell Dimension DIME521desktop, with Windows Vista Service Pack 2, I got the computer, refurbished, in 2008 I believe. It has a AMD Athlon 64x2 Dual Core Processor 3600+ 1.90ghz. 350MB of RAM, 32 Bit Operating System.

I doubt that helps too much but maybe it can help you determine where I should start. I know there are MUCH better pc's out there now, and it may just be time to replace this one. I just dread the file transferring process because I am afraid of losing something accidentally.

Thanks in advance!!!

Microsoft has built its own tablet for Windows 8, so I figured it deserved its own thread.

In the past, MS concentrated on software, allowing different companies to work on hardware, and the plan worked. Apple, on the other hand, designed its own hardware, with the software and hardware designers working together, and it also worked. MS will now be going both ways.

I have an Asus VivoTab Smart that comes with Windows 8, and before I can do the 8.1 upgrade, I have to install all 112 updates.  This was going just fine until after it rebooted, and now it's been stuck on the "Failure configuring Windows updates,
Reverting changes" screen for about the past 12+ hours.  I restarted it a couple of times by holding down the power button, but it comes right back to the same screen after the Asus splash screen.  Were this a laptop, I know exactly how
to fix it (go to Advanced Recovery Options), but since it's a new tablet that I haven't yet connected its Bluetooth keyboard to, I'm basically stuck.  I can't even boot to a flash drive because that requires a keyboard to get to the boot options.
What can I do?  None of the other forum posts related to this work because I don't have a keyboard attached to it and because the OS isn't loaded (can't get the Charms  bar so I can restart it that way or boot into Safe Mode or anything.)

A:Windows 8 tablet stuck on "Failure configuring Windows updates, reverting changes"

All right, I got it figured out - for Windows tablets, holding the Volume Down button while pressing the Power button will give you the Boot Options menu, so I used my 4-port USB hub (tablet has one micro USB port) and plugged in both a Windows 8 recovery
disk flash drive and a USB keyboard and mouse and did a System Restore from there.  Updates are still taking eons to install, but at least it's working now.

You may want to reinstall the operating system.

Backupthe files that are importantto you before you reinstall.

The "New" installation will overwrite the current one

If you do not format your hard drive before the reinstall the installation should not harm your files (That's why I suggest backingup your files) and will speed up the installation process.

When I type now one of the following alternative commands at the CommandPrompt then Win7 returns me something like:

Hi:

Looking for insight/advice re: KB3054476.

According to Infoworld, it was "Optional" in May, but I was not offered it then.
This week, it was offered as "Important" and "Recommended" (!), but only for one of my 2 Win7/64 boxes.

I have read the MS KB article, as well as THIS FORUM THREAD, the latter of which includes a report of a BSOD due to this particular update.

However, there isn't much out on the web about it.
And most of the discussion about it is overly technical for me.
And I am confused as to why it was previously offered as "Optional", but now is "Important" or "Recommended".

I don't *think* I "need" it (as I have no webcam on this box). And I don't like to tempt fate by fixing things that are not broken.

So, 3 questions:
Is it safe to install?
Is it really necessary/important?
Or would I be OK to hide it?
Thanks very much in advance!

A:KB3054476 offered as "Important"/"Recommended"/"Optional"

The status of updates changes with circumstances.
If an update isn't relevant, it won't be offered at all.
If however it's relevant but the related software is not apparently in use, it may be 'optional' - and gravitate to 'Recommended' or 'Important' if the related software is in use.
It can also be promoted through the hierarchy by MS depending on feedback through WU and error-trapped feedback.

If you have (and use) a webcam, then it's probably best to install the update.

hi,

OK, this is a weird one.

I wanted to move the "My Music", "My Pictures", "My Videos" folders to another HDD. I moved the "My Documents" Folder to this HDD without a problem but the others I accidentally set the whole HDD as the folder (if that makes sense). So now the music, videos and pictures folders are set to this HDD and dont have an actual folder to change the properties of. Therein lies my dilema.

If anyone can offer any advice on this curly issue it would be greatly appreciated.

First things first, thanks to all who can help.....

I need to programmatically make some adjustments to the Internet Explorer security settings. Most of these settings I have found but there are a few I have not been able to get a clear exact location for in the registry. I will be using a .BAT file to make
the adjustments on 100+ PCs.

Here is what I am looking for.....

Under the "Internet  Properties" found in control panel, under the "Privacy" tab there is an "Advanced" option button. When I click on it I get an "Advance Privacy Settings" options box. On it are several settings.
The first setting, "Override automatic cookie handling" needs to be checked in order to access the other options. I can do that by adjusting the DWord value of "PrivacyAdvanced" under the "Internet Settings" key in the registry,
"HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet settings", to be specific.

What I have not been able to find are the registry entries for the "First-party Cookies" "Accept, Block, or Prompt" options, the "Third-party Cookies" "Accept, Block, or Prompt" options, and the "Always allow
session cookies" check box. Please see picture below....

I have seen references to the following settings as being where those options exist, but nothing that explains ... Read more

When I start my XP Pro SP3 Dell laptop, I keep getting "Server Busy... Switch To...Retry" error. Clicking "Switch To" pulls up the start menu, "Retry" makes it disappear. Either response results in the window coming back momentarily. This lasts for several minutes.

How can I find the culprit?

Just got on the computer now, and suddenly everything seems to be slow, I checked the memory and found out that some program is using 94% of the memory, when I was looking for the program I found out that no program is using that amount of memory, 200 at most.

I downloaded RAMmap to map out the memory, and found out that about 94% of the memory is Nonpaged Pool (unallocated?)
. Please see the image below:

As you can see the memory leak clearly.
This is a new PC with windows installed a few days ago.

Here is a second picture, after a computer restart, without firefox it gets to 15% although there is no application who is running on 15% (of 8G, is about 1,000MB of process, which in the picture you can see that it cant be). - maybe it's ok maybe not, in both cases there is a leak as you can see in the first post.

One feature I really liked in XP was the ability to look in a folder through My Computer and sort the files by extension. For example if I wanted to get all .jpg files to one side of the folder as I looked for a file, I could click View, Arrange Icons By, Type and make that happen. I don't see that feature in Windows 7. I'm using W7Pro and can't find that or a similar feature anywhere. Is it here and I just haven't found it? TIA

I am not sure you can change the fonts though if you wish you can change the text from "Shutting Down" to "Bye Bye" or so, by editing, winlogon.exe.mui.

Hey everyone,

Unfortunately, my computer has been infected with a particularly virulent, or relatively new, virus (for which I am currently awaiting help on the Malware removal sub-forum). I wanted to ask, though, if anyone else has had to deal with this particular Trojan before because, from what I have been able to find out, it (i.e. Trojan_Win32.Generic, or "TidyNetwork.com") doesn't seem to have a remedy as of yet. I've checked just about every virus database I could and have come up empty handed every time. What's more, I've downloaded and ran half a dozen different top-shelf Anti-virus' scans and removal programs, only to end up disappointed.

Does anyone know what the deal with this thing is?

Best,

John

Hi - I have a thinkpad x61t. When it's in the docking station, whenever I press "shift" "alt" or "ctrl" a little pop up window tells me that key is being pressed. The laptop does not do this when it's out of the docking station. I've looked all over the control panel in vista and can't find any setting.

Any ideas how to switch it off? Driving me nuts! Thanks.

A:"shift", "alt", "ctrl" appear onscreen when pressed (see pic)

You mentioned that you have looked in the Control Panel so this may be something you tried already:

Control Panel - Ease of Access Center - Make the keyboard eaiser use - uncheck 'Turn on sticky keys'.

Hello,

I've been having this nasty problem since yesterday. I have no knowledge of viruses whatsoever so I am at a complete loss as to what to do.

I'm using a 7-year-old laptop and Windows XP. At a guess, the problem comes from my friend's USB. This is what happened: I inserted the USB and noticed a RECYCLER and some Shorcut to (1) etc. viruses. I thought this wasn't serious so I ignored it. An hour or two after that my Internet connection crashed (I don't know if it has anything to do with the virus). By checking randomly, I found out that gpedit.msc and my Antivir setup file also refused to run.

I then shut down my computer and have been unable to boot ever since. Every time I try to start up, I am faced with a dozen of "out of memory" pop-ups, all of them with "xxx" in their title bar. I tried closing them all, but new ones kept springing up. I opened Task Manager and found at least 20 processes named FONTS.EXE. I guess this was what caused the "out of memory" error, so I tried to end those processes, but they kept re-appearing over and over again.

The taskbar and the desktop icons won't show up. The screen is blank - there's just my wallpaper background, my cursor and the nasty error pop-ups. I can't run any virus check or do anything else.

I've also tried rebooting in Safe Mode, but it took me to the blue screen of death.

Another problem, my laptop's CD driver is out of order (as I said... Read more
