screen turns black after windows startup

Q: screen turns black after windows startup

I'm running windows xp professional. I boot up my computer and it shows the windows loading page and then when the desktop should appear, instead the screen goes black and my monitor reads "no PC signal", as if the PC is not connected to the monitor. But that cannot be the case because it showed the windows loading screen on the monitor.
This problem keeps occuring now. It was working perfectly fine up to today. I booted the computer up in safe mode which worked fine, and re-installed the latest nvidia geforce 7300 se graphics card driver. I then rebooted in normal mode and the problem still occured where the screen is black and says "no PC signal." I don't know what to do now, i tried a new vga cable already, but that didn't fix it.
anybody else run into this problem and solve it?
help!

Hello,

I am encountering an issue of when the Dell optiplex 755 boots up, it boots through the Windows XP logo just fine, once it tries to transition between the logo and loading the system up, it just shows a black screen and nothing else happens. I tried using a bootable Windows XP flash drive to repair the system files and it loads the Windows XP setup ok but when it runs through all of the commands on the bottom of the screen and the last one says "Starting Windows" , it takes me to a blue screen (screenshot below). I have HIRENS and have done a lot of the chkdsk commands to fix the files and everything comes back ok. I tried to clone the hard drive with the same exact hard drive and still the same issue. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks for your help in advance.

Hi,
I'm having trouble with two of my desktops.
Desktop #1 Problem:
When all cords and such are plugged in, I press the power button. The desktop turns on for about 1-2 seconds and then restarts. The bios doesn't flash, the os doesn't boot. As far as I can tell the desktop restarts indefinitely. Any ideas what's going on here?
--Desktop Type: HP Pavilion a705W
I found someone with a similar problem here

Desktop #2 Problem:
I bought some 3M Dust Remover a few days ago. I disconnected power, along with everything else, from a desktop of mine. Pulled the cover off and started blowing the dust out of the case. I put everything back together, plugged it in, and the desktop doesn't work. It boots to a blank screen with the the power and hard drive led's stuck on, on the front of the desktop. The led on the back of the power supply turns on, I can hear the hard drive spin up, it detects the cd/dvd drives, floppy drive and then just hangs with the led's stuck on. Anyone have an idea what might be going on here?
--Desktop Type: Compaq Presario S4200NX

Thanks for the help, I'm hoping to get atleast one of these back online w/o buying a whole new desktop.

A:HELP! Desktop turns on and restarts repeatedly, other turns on to black screen

Hi….

Desktop 1:

Do you see anything on your screen at all while this is happening?

Have you tried to press the setup key to see if the BIOS will come up and make changes?

Do you have any USB devices (other than keyboard or mouse) hooked up? If so, try disconnecting them and see if it will at least POST or attempt to go into the OS.

WARNING: Before checking the capacitors, disconnect the power cord on your system and press & hold the POWER button to allow the power to discharge! Also, you should always ground yourself before touching computer components to prevent static discharge!

Just FYI, some of the motherboards in this series of HP’s have issues with the capacitors.

You should take a look at the capacitors to see if the tops of them are raised or discolored. Also, if you put your finger on the top of the capacitors, they should feel as if they are INDENTED and not flush or raised. Raising or discoloration (up to and including a black tar looking substance on the tops indicate a leaking capacitor).

Desktop 2:

Any POST sounds (beeps) produced at all?

Have you tried the monitor from Desktop 1 on this one?

Anything at all displayed on the monitor, to include CHECK CABLE message?

Recommendation: Open the case again and ensure that all the cards, memory, drive cables and so forth are all connect properly and not loose or dislodged.

Do you know how to RESET your BIOS to default using the onboard jumpers?

Ok, so...I just got over my BSOD problem by disabling crossfire on my system. It was working fine for a few days (And it still technically is), but I'm having a strange issue now. The computer turns on and loads windows fine, but the screen is black until Windows actually loads. Basically, I don't see a splash screen for the motherboard and there's no way for me to get into the BIOS.

Has anyone experienced this problem before? Any ideas?

System Specs:
Processor: Intel i7 3960x
Motherboard: ASRock Extreme 9 X79 chipset
16 GB of RAM: Corsair Vengeance 1600 Mhz
Graphics: 2 x Radeon 7970's (Both cards are connected, despite Crossfire being disabled)
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate - 64 Bit

A:Screen goes black UNTIL windows turns on: Can't get into BIOS

Does the motherboard have a built in video port? You could try hooking your monitor to that to get into the BIOS. Then from there.. not sure, maybe the internal video port was enabled by a BIOS reset or something, try turning it off and maybe it'll then use your normal card(s) during POST?

I'm stumped! About a month ago my windows file manager (both Xplorer2 and Windows Explorer which both worked perfectly for years) started malfunctioning when I right-click my mouse on a displayed executable (.exe) program icon.

The rotating 'Busy' icon appears for a few seconds and then the screen turns black. A few seconds later all the desktop icons begin reappearing but I appear to have exited the file manager.

So far I've tried:

1. Anti-Virus scans. (AVG, Avast, Malwarebytes, MS Security Essentials, etc.)
2. Replacing IE9 with IE8. (Windows Explorer and IExplorer both use the same source program.)
3. Downloaded and ran HijackThis. (I don't know what to do with the results log.)

None of the above steps helped. Does anybody have any thought on what I should try next? Thanks!

A:Windows Explorer turns screen black and exits

What is HijackThis? I wouldn't trust third-party software unless it was recommended by a expert.

Are you able to upload the results log onto the forums, maybe it will contain some useful information related to the problem.

Thanks,

Harry

Pc just turns off and restarts when i'm in the middle of something. So far i think it's only happened when i play a game. My videocard is the radeon hd 7850, and i'm on the newest catalyst drivers.

In eventviewer i see a event for usermodepowerservice happening followed by a kernel-pnp source.

Kernel-PNP has this message in the description: "The driver \Driver\WudfRd failed to load for the device SWD\WPDBUSENUM{9e95bf9f-3804-11e5-b395-448a5b607d83}#0000000000100000"

The usermodepowerservice thing has this message in the description "Process C:\Windows\System32\atieclxx.exe (process ID:1088) reset policy scheme from {381b4222-f694-41f0-9685-ff5bb260df2e} to {381b4222-f694-41f0-9685-ff5bb260df2e}"

further back there is also a kernel power error with an X that says in the description: The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly. I am pretty sure it's not the power supply as this started literally right after i upgraded to win 10.

I'm pretty sure this only happens when i try to play a game.

If it's an incompatible driver what are my options currently? If not what can i do to fix this?

Hi, So 2 nights ago my computer updated the new Windows 10 Version 1607 for x64-based Systems.  It's working ok when in use, but after my computer goes on a screen saver mode and I return to it, a black screen comes on with nothing except for the cursor.  I can't do anything so I have to manually shut it down (today I've done this 3 times already) and once it comes back up, it takes longer to take me to the log in screen and then log in.I'm frustrated and mad that this new update is affecting the performance in my computer. Please help asapThanks in advanceMarjorie

Anybody have McAfee firewall and virus scan. ver 9.0 and ver 6.0

My icon turns black after about 20 seconds whenever I reboot or start my pc.

Yet when I check my security center, it says firewall is enabled.

And when I click on the icon and go to options, it says to enable firewall, but firewall is already enabled according to the security center.

I have tried there tech support but they don't have a real solution.

When I first install the software everything works fine, but the first firewall update is the culprit, it turns the icon black. I have tried several installs with manual removes etc.

anyone know of a solution.

Hello,

I have been having this problem since a week or so. Broni has helped me in malware forum to rule out malware as responsible. My machine is clean and I was refered here for further help.

Here is my problem:

At boot-time, I see windows XP load screen with the progress bar, the progress bar advances to the end and then, the screen turns pitch black and all is see is an arrow cursor I can move around. I thought until yesterday that this was a permanent freeze-up, but if I wait, say, 6 minutes, the black screen disappears and windows then starts normally.

Last week, problem was intermittent, it now happens all the time.

Windows boot-up was fine before.

Please help me.

A:Windows load screen at boot, looong black screen, then normal startup

I had this tons of times with my old XP PC. It is normal if you have a lot of files on the HDD and you have little RAM. How much RAM do you have? What is the capacity of the HDD? And do you have the Windows XP disc? Would you be willing to upgrade the RAM and/or the OS if we must resort to that? Or would you rather just buy a new PC?

Hello everybody, today my laptop has become blind. Let me explain:

My laptop was purchased in 2007
Specs:
Alienware m9750
Dual nvidia 7950 go
Dual core 2.0
2 gigs of ram
80 gb harddrive

So here's what happened, today I was watch s movie on netflix when suddenly my screen goes black. Though I had crashed but my laptop was still on and the sound was still going. restarted, and the initial screen was slightly pixellated and garbled. Which has now made my laptop permanent garbled and pixely. After the windows logo. My screen goes black, but I am still hear the windows start up sound. I found that I am able to click on some music files on my desktop that are able to play, so this is a video issue. I reboot in safe mode which works this time figure to disable and uninstall the videocard drivers. I restart and I'm able to use my pc somewhat normally( still garbled). Reinstalled the nvidia drivers then halfway through says: error install failed or something, it happen really fast then crashed, tried restarting atleast 20 times in safe mode but it freezes up after it tries to load partition(1)\windows\system32\drivers\mup.sys

All of the other options for start up(even last settings to work) the screen goes black after the windows logo. I have tried tinkering with the bios but it doesn't help. Its basically being blind using a computer. So I'm wondering if there is anyway to possibly blindly open up command prompt and possibly disable or uninstall the drivers from there, I'm ab... Ok 116 error is caused by your Graphics card.
First thing to do is update your drivers from the NVIDIA website.

If BSODs continue Try HDD tests,
download gpu-z to check if your card is getting too hot, also is there lots of dust in the card?

Do you overclock your video card?

Boot the computer and press F8 in the Advanced Boot menu choose Last Known Good Configuration.
What is the make and model# of the computer? Go to the manufactures support/download drivers site and download the Chipset and the Video driver for the computer.
Go to Start/Search and type powercfg.cpl. Right click the powercfg results and Run As Administrator. Click Change Plan Settings/change Advanced power settings. Reset your power settings to your liking.

The problem:
Check the example picture I attached (Welcome_screen.JPG). This is my best recreation of the problem using GIMP
When I turn my computer on, the loading and welcome screen are jumbled blocks of pixels,
parts of the loading screen will be copy across the screen, so that the loading bar is in two or three places.
The welcome screen is even more pixellized, and right before the desktop appears, the monitor goes black, it does not turn off, it just goes black.
I can use the keyboard to turn the computer off.
In XP I can use: (Windows key) -> Up -> Enter -> Right -> Enter, to turn the computer off.
The screen has randomly pixellize like this before, (while I am on the desktop or using Wordpad or Notepad , never in a game)
sometimes minimizing the current program fixes the pixellization and other times
the screen would go completely black after pixellizing, but the computer is still on and working, so I have to power it off.

The parameters:
Desktop - Dell Dimension 5100
OS - XP Home, Media Center Edition, SP3 (updated from SP2 about four months ago)
GPU - Radeon X300, and integrated graphics which are disabled I can't be enabled unless I can see the screen, which I can not.
PSU - stock Dell, 305W

I take it your system has a dedicated card while your motherboard has integrated video. Is the integrated video disabled in the BIOS? If not, do so. My question is based on what you gave: "May not use onboard video with add in video device."

Also, that pixillation is information that either the card is overheating or dying. But do the above first.

always it happens that on the startup of windows 8.1 (and also when it was installed windows 8 before the windows 8.1 upgrade) after the republic of gamers logo and before the appearance of the lock screen, the monitor remains completely black for 5 minutes about (after that appears the lock screen and windows works again well). Usually Windows starts itself in 10 seconds about. During the black screen commands don't works. Can be the use of cc cleaner, that cleaning temporary files, creates this problem? I tried to reinstall the last version of the Nvidia display drivers but nothing changed. I took away all those unuseful programs from the windows startup. What can I do? Hi, Welcome to Eight forums.

Issue could be mixed set of graphic card drivers. Your PC might be downloading the vendor's drivers and hardware drivers together. Also, windows makes a backup copy of the drivers and puts them into its driver store for you and keeps putting it back on your system if the driver is deleted. You need to go into control panel, disable the autoinstall of device drivers, uninstall the video driver, reboot, and install with the vendors setup program and reboot. Then enter control panel and re-enable the autoinstall of the drivers again.

Problem Details -

My laptop has been running with no problems at all. This morning I switched it on and after the welcome screen I just get a black screen and it stays there. There is no cursor and no ability to enter task manager

Attempted Repairs -

I've tried booting into all 3 safe modes, low res mode and last good config, which just give me the same blank screen. I've tried startup repair which finds no problems. I've tried running sfc /scannow but it gives me a message saying that "there is a system repair pending" and that the laptop need to restart. I have also run chkdsk (chkdsk C:) on both drives which finds no bad sectors and gives no warnings. I have also tried clearing cmos by removing the battery and power and pressing the power button for 2 minutes. I would use system restore but I stupidly have no restore points.

My only guesses now are that the user profile is corrupt (but this usually gives a message rather than a black screen), the windows installation is corrupt or I have some virus/malware. I'm not sure how to proceed.

Thanks

Hello, I really need help with a problem I've been having at random. This has happened 5 times (and counting) and they were all at times I was of course away from my computer. The screen goes black and my keyboard and mouse doesn't light up anymore. My computer is still on but I can hear my CPU fan racing every time this happens.

I don't know exactly why this happens other than a possible graphic driver error but I am updated to the latest. I check my event log and this is the only error that I see happening each time this happens:

I have a Dell Inspiron and it seems that they are the worst that have the problems. It is a vista and a year and a half old. Before it died/crashed it would turn black. In the light i could still see the programs running and it just faded the screen. I tried setting the hibernation to never and turning off screen to never but it still fades to that same blackness. I cant even see properly through it and i cant do anything to turn it back to it was before.

I rebooted it to the factory edition but it still does the same thing. Please help!

I know this might sound silly, but were you running off the battery and now maybe the battery is running low, if this is the case the screen will become black after the battery gets too low.
Just a thought.

Alright, today I hibernated my computer (I usually hibernate) left it for an hour and attempted to turn it back on, now it loads fine but once it gets to the point where it should display the vista logo and then the log in screen the screen goes blank. The hard disk light is blinking fast so fast it's almost just staying on and the wireless does its blinking patterns as if it's redying the wireless connection but the screen remains black. I've tried safe mode, same result. Two screens, same result. I booted Ubuntu and it was fine so I'm using that now.

First of all, any insight into how I should go about fixing this?
If not, I have extremely important files on the hard drive is there any way you could recommend getting them back?

Thanks for any help, I'd hate to have to take it in and risk the guys at the store deciding it's easier just to wipe the hard drive or something.

A:Screen turns black before reaching the login screen

Are you using a Ubuntu Live CD, or are you dual booting?
If you're dual booting, you can access your ntfs partition from Ubuntu using steps listed on many many web sites: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...earch&aq=f&oq=
Some are easier than others.

As for fixing your Vista. I have reservations because in some of my steps Vista has this nasty habit of overwriting the master boot record with its own without warning you (making you unable to boot into ubuntu if you dual boot), so research some more, and proceed with caution. If you boot into the Vista DVD, I think you can click repair, and you have a bunch of options and it looks like this:
http://neosmart.net/wiki/download/at...eryOptions.png
I haven't tried them in a while so I can't really recall what each does.
You can try going back using a restore point. Be VERY cautious with "Startup Repair". I think that's the one that rewrites the master boot record. (if you really need to try it, research how you can backup the master boot record in ubuntu, then restore it if needed - usually a flash drive, a floppy, or a bootable CD may be needed - you most likely would be able to do it from the live cd if you know the steps though).
And if all else fails, do a repair install. Can't recall how it's done, but there are many sites dedicated to that topic. You can also ask around the forum about it.

For several months my laptop (HP Pavilion dv6) has been going black about 20% of the time that I start it up. It is more likely to occur when my laptop has only been turned off for a couple hours or less.

The startup process starts as normal, but then goes to black, with the exception of a strip of color that appears in the upper left part of the screen. I can't say for sure, but it might be a miniaturized (1/16th inch by 3 inch) version of my task bar.

The screen stays stuck and the only way out of it is to hold my power button till it goes off. When I restart it asks if I want to "start normally" etc., and it then often asks to do a checkdisk (which I've done to no avail).

I'm curious if anyone is familiar with this type of problem and has any suggestions on how to fix it.

A:Windows 7 Startup issue - Screen going black

1. Click Start
2. In the search box, type cmd
3. In the list that appears, right-click on cmd.exe and choose Run as administrator
4. In the command window that opens, type sfc /scannow and hit enter.

Report the output from the command window once it finishes.

Hey,
I was running FSX on my other desktop when the power cord got pulled out, I tried starting the computer again then found myself with the dreaded black screen and I don't know what to do.
When I press the power button on the desktop, everything seems to sound normal, fan going etc but no beeps.
Monitor light stays on amber however. I've tried another monitor and still the same thing. Tried the ol' take all plugs out, re-plug, then restart but still the same thing. I've tried letting it get cold and still the same thing.
I also took the RAM out, gave it alittle clean and still no change. I've also popped in the Windows XP disk to see if that would do anything but nothing as nothing shows up on screen. Keep in mind that the black screen is constantly there, i.e no Windows start up screen or anything.
I don't know what to do!!. Can someone please help??

Hi all,

I have recently (since today) had an issue with my PC.

I came home after uni today, pressed the power button on my PC, it started up normal, showed the mobo splash screen etc... yet when it got to the stage of loading Windows (Vista) it just got stuck on the black screen that normally appears about 1 second before the "loading windows" status bar comes up. It just got stuck there on that black screen for over 10 minutes until I hard reset the PC. Then it gave me an error screen saying Windows hadn't been shut-down correctly and if I wanted to load it into safe mode etc. I just chose the normal mode and then it loaded Windows fine.

I then shut down the PC.

Later that day around 7pm I powered on the system again, and the same thing happened again. The only way I could get it working was to hard reset it and then it would boot after selecting "start normally".

So I have tried:

-Performing a Windows repair from the O/S disk, the repair program couldn't find any problems though, and consequently didn't repair anything.

-Restoring to yesterday before I have had issues.

What I need to know is if anyone else has had this problem before, or has heard of it, and possibly if there is a solution? I have tried searches, but I don't have a keyword/error code specific enough to find any real answers.

Could it be hardware or software related? Or both?

I had the little icon on the bottom right of the screen (like where the clock is) that kept telling me install updates or they needed to be installed or something, so I finally went and installed them. When it finished it said Windows needs to be restarted.

When it started up again it shows the hard drive, processor, memory info, etc. and then says "Windows XP", after that the screen turns completely black, except for small "Logging in" windows that appears for one second, and then everything is completely black. I can hear the hard drive running, but I can't see anything at all, except I can move the arrow around.

I tried starting with last known good configuration and it didn't work, and then tried starting in safe mode. When I start in safe mode I can see the words safe mode written in white on the corners of the screen, but nothing else.

What in the world am I supposed to try now?

Hi, I'm new to this forum and have a problem with the starting up my Gateway dx4320 desktop running Windows 7.

Symptoms:
will startup to Windows logo, then go black with a solid white cursor in the center of the screen
tried all Advanced boot options, safemode, etc, but still not working
can get into the Bios screen
booted up the gateway recovery disc & also windows repair disc.  However, startup repair results showed no problems
Tried to do a system restore but apparently all restore points are now gone
I did notice that the initial Gateway logo screen is now an Acer screen
Since I need to retrieve all the data on my Gateway, i have connected harddrive to a borrowed, newer desktop running Window 8. The gateway drive shows as drive E, but when I click on it, I get a Location is not available / Access denied error message

On the newer computer running windows 8, I was able to run Malwarebytes, GMER, TDSSKiller on drive  E.  All returned 0 problems detected

** So, would appreciate any assistance in getting rid of the black screen problem,

**  or perhaps guidance on the best way to copy over the contents of my gateway harddisk to the newer computer running Windows 8, so I can do a System Recovery on my old gateway and copy the contents back over to it.

Thanks much in advance!

Hi folks,

Today I started up my PC and after the windows XP loading screen, I got nothing but a black screen. No response from the PC to keyboard commands or anything, and the monitor was still showing it had a signal. Several reboots and I still had the same problem. Nothing beyond that screen.

I attempted to start it in safe mode and for some weird reason, it is telling me I haven't 'activated my copy of windows' and gets stuck in a little loop. Even though I clearly HAVE activated my copy of windows, as I've been using this Windows installation for months without a problem.

In any case, after the attempt at safe mode, I managed to get the machine to boot normally, but I am guessing it's something of a fluke that it finally managed to start.

Not sure if it's related, but ever since I installed a new graphics card in my machine, I have been having intermittent problems with the power button. For whatever reason, the power button does not always work, and it sometimes takes several tries to switch on. There appears to be nothing wrong with the power button wiring.

My PSU is quite new, and is a corsair 650W. It should be enough to power my system. I have a Biostar T560 motherboard, a 4400+ processor, and an Nvidia 460 graphics card. Currently I have 4 hard drives, including one whose windows installation is for some reason borked and is unusably snow yet works fine as a data drive.

Hello there everyone. This is my first post on this forum and I am quite embarassed that it should be one where I ask for help.
Well, pride aside, I really have no idea what to do. I used my PC as sually this morning when suddenly it just froze. Very well then, it's Windows after all - not overly alarmed, I restarted. Now it takes full 10 or 15 minut to boot. First, I see the 'Welcome' message, which persists for a minute or two. Then, I see a balack screen and if I am patient enough after several minutes the startup is finally complete. If that wasn't bad enough, afterwards the PC is running very... Well, it's choppy. It often freezes for several seconds, which is no fun at all.
Just to be clear, I didn't change or modify anything lately, apart from installing Shockwave player yesterday. Also, I tried going into safe mode and deleting graphics card drivers, with no effect.
I would be very thankfull for any help or advice.
Cheers,
Vares

Things I have tried:
1) Memory check - all good
2) chkdsk - all disks, no problems
3) Windows System Repair - got error code = 0x490, don't know what to do with that
4) Waited for hours for something to happen while black screen up - nothing ever did

Hi, at first I thought this might be virus related. I went through with help from Howard_Hopkinso, and removed all virus' and malware. But my problem persists.

I have an Alienware Area 51 m7700, 120 Gig HD, 3 Gig memory, 3.8 GHz Pentium 4 HT duo processor. NVIDIA GeForce Go 6800 Ultra.

What happens is when i try and playing a source game for little while the screen goes black, sound skips, but the laptop still runs. Also happens when i click on certain internet links.

I assume that i need updated drivers, which i did. but that didn't work either.

I am lost, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Tech Support Guy's users,

Yesterday, I got back to my house, and went on the computer for a short while, then while looking on the internet, my Inspiron 1525's screen died on me. Not only my main screen, but also my other monitors as well, saying there was no signal. I was assuming that it is a dying Video Card, but I wanted to have more insight regarding my question. Is my fear correct, or it is the drivers? I haven't updated my drivers since 4 months ago, so I doubt it is my drivers.

Any who, if you need more information from me, please ask away and I will respond as quickly as possible.

P.s. I wasn't do sure if I was suppose to put it on Hardware or Window 7 section. Felt like, it could be a window 7 error.

I am using Windows 8 on my laptop. If I connect my laptop to a video projector and left it idle for about 4 minutes, the screen turns black. So I am trying to avoid this. Here is what I did so far. First I found that for Windows 8, the option of presentation setting is not available in Control panel -> Windows Mobility Center (Fig. 1).

Next I looked for the screen saver and found that I have not activated it at all. Also the (Fig. 2)

Next I tried to Change the power setting by going to Control panel -> Change power setting -> Change when to turn off the display and set all of the as Never (Fig. 3)

I still got the black screen after doing these. Finally I noticed that after I left my laptop idle for about 4 minutes, it says "maintenance is in progress" in the "Action center". After searching through web, I found that an easy way to stop this maintenance during my presentation. I disconnected from the wireless internet temporary when giving a presentation. I tested this and after disconnecting from internet there will be no "maintenance is in progress".

However, the screen still turns black during presentation, even after disconnecting from the internet. Any help will be appreciated.

Basically as the title suggests, when I turn on my PC it powers up, I hear fans spinning yet my screen will stay black. To add to this when it stays blank my keyboard also does not light up.

So far the only way for me to access my PC is to turn it off and on a few times, usually including completely disconnecting it from the power for a short while.

I'm not too experienced with the ins and outs of computers but all I can think is maybe my PSU is not giving enough power (though I get no warning beeps), my Keyboard might be the issue? I hope you guys can help. I've thought, maybe do I need to update the BIOS? If so how do I do that?

A:PC Turns on BUT my screen is still black/blank?

Is this a new build that will not post or has it been running then developed a problem?

Have you tried disconnecting ALL drives [both hd and optical] removing any usb device ie printer, scanner, hub, etc and then pw ON? See if the mb will reliably complete POST. If it does complete post a few times, then start connecting devices one at a time until you find the failed part. If it does not complete POST in the above config, then you will need to start swapping parts with known good units; start with the pw supply.

Next post ALL of your exact system specs; ie exact mb installed, exact ram installed, etc. Note 8gig of ram does not really tell us much; 8gig of corsair 123xxx, tells us a lot more.

If you can get the system to post, enter the bios or uefi and post the following info; cpu temp, system temp, 12V, 5V, and 3.3V values.

Hi,First of all, I do not have an antivirus software installed in my computer, that is why I am pretty sure there is something wrong going in my laptop. I am working with windows xp Service Pack 2. Here is the problem; my laptop sometimes Shuts down without asking. Not in the sense that it shows you the shutdown window. No! I just see suddenly my laptop out of electricity and the screen turns to dark! I have a Malwarebyte's'Anti-Malware installed in my pc and it has twice gave me a trojan a alert. But, I do not remeber the name of the trojan because it is not appearing anymore. Another thing is when I try to visit antvirus websites, most of them do not open for me! I do not know if the virus or the trojan is that smart to know that! My internet conncetion usually gets slow. I am feeling really frustrated because when I am in the middle of something important, the secreen suddenly turns to black. Also, when I want to use Ctrl+Alt+Delete, I get the following error message; Task Manage has been disabled by your administrator. Any help would be appreciated. Inverters and bad backlights can be hard to diagnose without just replacing the parts but it sounds as one or the other is out/going out.
If you check these out yourself, good luck. Laptops are a bear and unless you've done a few, a repair shop may be best.
Good luck.

Hello. I've come to hopefully find a solution to a boot up problem I'm having with my computer. There are several factors that I'm honestly not sure will play a role or not, mainly because I'm not very understanding when it comes to computers.

The problem is that when I push the power button of my computer, it sends no signal to my screen. I can't tell if it loads anything or not either. I can think of a few things that might have some effect on this, but I'm not sure.

About three months back after cleaning my neglected tower of dust and such, it started to shut off rapidly after boot up. To inspect the problem, I had a friend look at the computer. He removed the cooling unit on the Processor revealing that my 8year old computer had next to no thermal compound. So after putting of ordering some for about three months, we had applied some about 2 days ago. The computer then booted up fine, but seemed to have an excess amount of lag. So I wiped the computer and reinstalled XP tonight. When it was booted up, it worked fine, so I went into IE to download firefox as it's my preference, then started reinstalling my drivers. First I installed my Videocard, then kept my computer booted up for my sound drivers which I got from the Compaq homesite. After doing this, I rebooted my computer. Not I wanted to get simple things such as AIM and and Java. So when i go to boot up Firefox from it's default homepage, my computer shuts down. when I go to reboot it, it doesn't start and I'm ... Ok so, im trying to help my friend with her broken computer.
She got hit with the avsoft virus, It took me a while but I finally got malwarebytes on her system, and had to rename the .exe in order to get it to run in safemode and it seemed to have worked pretty well, i then wanted to boot it in normal mode and run a full scan to make sure we got everything.
Anyway, we were experimenting with it for whatever reason (i guess malware removal had us feeling brave) and we unhooked her monitor, and plugged her desktop computer via the monitor cord into my laptop. i know that you can plug a monitor into a laptop and use that instead of the laptop screen, so we wanted to see if it would work with the desktop instead of the monitor. You know, like use my laptop as the monitor and keyboard.
I went into the my laptops nvidia control panel and messed around with some of the settings
All of a sudden my laptop screen went black.
I just rebooted, and my laptop was fine but when we plugged her monitor back into her desktop and rebooted it would not reboot correctly.

The lights on the computer would turn on, you can hear it is running, the fans are running, it makes one beep, just like a normal startup. the screen displays a logo (not the windows logo) an everex logo for a few seconds, and then some text comes up (like normally) and looks like it proceeds to load but it flies by so quick you cant read it, and then nothing. A big black blank screen.

Hi guys.

I have installed windows xp many many times and this is the first time its happned. So when i try to install, it seems fine in the beginning. Formatting, Installing some files, then it goes to the part where it prepares the installation and it says something like 39 minutes left. Its still fine there, buh when it goes down to around 34 minutes. My screen turns black and it just dies there. I tried turning on and off my monitor, no luck. Cap lock and Num Lock arent working at all. Fan stops and disc stops spinning.

These are the things i have tried:
1. Tried re-installing, re-formatting many many times
2. Low-level format my hard drive
3. checked my hard drive many times
4. Resetted my BIOS

Please if anyone out there has had the same problem and knows how to solve it. Please help me. Thank you very much.

sorry i dunno the exact brand and info on my system, i kant check right now anyway... cuz i dun even hav an OS. so.. please help.

p.s. I've also tried removing all USB all i left there were my Keyboard / mouse (NOT USB) and monitor.

A:screen turns black during XP Installation

Try taking out your graphics card, if your xp disc is SP1 try SP2.
The 34 minutes is the installing devices section.
Its the graphics card it is detecting..it may now be dead..or you can try using the onboard gfx just to pass installation..

Try another card/onboard and clean the agp slot with compressed air.

Hello all,

This is my first post here, so please excuse me if I have created this thread in the wrong place. For quite some time (perhaps about two-three months) my screen has been flickering and turning black at random times. Sometimes my screen will be fine for a few days in a row, and then it might flicker for a few minutes and eventually just turn black. Usually what I do is turn it off and on a few times and eventually it returns normal. The thing is, I know it is still turned on because my music player will still operate, and it is a lighter shade of black, meaning I can still faintly see what was on my screen. Further, I initially thought it was an issue related to my charger being wrecked, but I have since replaced this and the problem persists. My guess is that it is some sort of virus, which I am basing on my quick reading of some other websites where others have reported similar problems. I'm really not a tech whiz, so does anyone have any suggestions?

Any input will be highly appreciated.

A:Screen flickers and turns black

I'm not very well versed in this area, but it does sound like a case of a faulty monitor since your programs run as per normal during those flickers.. You might wish to post more details on your specs and age of your hardware.
Have you tried replacing the monitor for testing?

Whenever I boot Windows 7, after it starts, instead of showing the login screen, it show a black screen with a movable cursor. Now, I can go into safe mode, and it works, but, hell, I can even put my password on that black screen, press enter and it will go into Windows and work just fine. But the thing is, it's supposed to show the login screen, not just a black one, so I'm a bit worried of what might be causing the problem, and whether or not it could expand into something worse. Hello,

I have a ThinkPad Edge E430, 64bit Windows 7 computer that is under warranty. Upon normal startup, I am able to load Windows 7 and get to the user login screen. After logging in, I get a black screen and can see the mouse cursor but no applications ever load. I think there is a problem that is preventing windows explorer from loading.

I'm not sure if this is related, but a few days before this started happening I received a Windows Action Center notice that the small.CA virus was detected on my computer. I ran Windows Defender, Malwarebytes, McAfee Virus Scan, and Emisoft Emergency Scanner, but none of them turned up any problems.

I'm able to run my computer through Windows safe mode with networking at the moment normally.

Do you know if this is a software problem and if so is it fixable? If it's a hardware problem, my computer is under warranty and I can send it back.

Thanks,
XSJ

Boot to safe mode, set your display for a generic vga, low resolution. Restart in standard mode, see if you get display. If so, start then, select correct display driver and try, step by step, to get back to where you were. If, somewhere along the line, you get the blank screen again, you should have an idea what happend.

Approx three weeks ago, I experienced a screen lock-up on a rather old Dell Laptop (Model 1450) using Windows Vista. I spazzed, tried to hard-boot (realized that a DVD was in there, poss the cause). Then reached for the Windows Vista software CD (was the wrong one - license was for other laptop).

To date, I can see the Dell Banner, the Windows Vista banner and then blackness. Nothing. No cursor...no lines...I hear the fan briefly....

Have tried to reboot in Safe mode (no luck). Pressed F2 and F12...can see both screens but Im lost.

Can't locate the orig Windows Vista cd to reload.

Is this computer dead? Any recommendations on how to revive? Lots of info on there I was hoping to extract. Thanks in advance for any advice....I'll start diggin the hole to toss the laptop into...

Hi everyone

Earlier this evening, I updated my computer, which included about ten new important ones, and four optional. One of the optional ones was an NVIDIA drivers update. Thinking little of it, I set it to update, then watched a movie on the computer while I waited. During it, the screen went black three times (as if the power had been cut) and the computer's noise level dropped significantly. After less than a second, it was back to normal in all cases and afterwards, after seeing the update (where the NVIDIA driver had failed to update), I figured that was the problem. Windows Update said it needed to restart in order to install the drivers correctly, and I let it. Unfortunately, every time I start up now, the screen goes instantly black, and there is nothing but my regular windows cursor. The left side goes on a bit beyond my screen (I can move the cursor off-screen), but that's it. I have tried starting up with my the driver CD for my monitor, the one for my graphics card, as well as my Windows Restore disk. None of them work. I also can't enter Safe Mode because it never starts up, no matter how much I press F8. I've even tried hooking up an old keyboard, in case the USB ports somehow didn't work that soon in the startup or something. No dice, it won't even light up the Lock keys.

Any help would really be appreciated!

Hello, I have a sort of strange problem with starting my Win7 PC. Strange in so far that when googling it, nobody else seems to have experienced this. While the PC seems to boot normally, it takes some ten minutes until the screen turns on. By then the Windows login screen is there, or I can also type the password and hit enter while the screen is still black, and find myself on the desktop as soon as there is a picture. From then on the PC works flawlessly. I can also turn the monitor off and on again and it works immediately. From other threads of people having similar but not identic problems, here are some solutions I've tried without success already

-Updating graphics card driver
-Unplugging internet cable and USB drives during boot during boot

Does somebody have a clue what else it could be?

Greetings, Mike

I've seen a bunch of threads with similar issues, but most seem to get piled on with people either dealing with or addressing situations with slightly different details, so I figured I'd start my own thread.

The story: 2 weeks ago, my Windows 7 64-bit system was working fine. The morning of June 30, I powered it down, packed it into my car and relocated about 400 miles away. I moved the computer into my new apartment on July 2, and there it sat unused until the evening of July 11. (I used my macbook pro in the mean time). When I powered it on this evening, the initial boot process seemed normal until Windows started to load. I got to the screen that says "Copyright Microsoft Corporation" below the animated progress bar. That window stays up for 5-6 seconds, and then the screen flickers and goes blank. A couple seconds later, the mouse pointer appears. All I can see on the black screen is the white mouse pointer, and that's where I'm at now.

Some details that seem relevant and that may differentiate my situation from some of the others:

The mouse pointer responds as it normally would.
I cannot pull up the task manager. (i.e. CTL+ALT+DEL and CTL+SHIFT+ESC do nothing)
The Num Lock key toggles the NumLock indicator light on the keyboard.
Safe Mode exhibits the same problem (black screen, active cursor), but at a lower screen resolution. - Safe Mode and Safe Mode with Command Prompt both do this.
Running Last Known Good Configuration did not help.

The best method to fix this is from a Windows bootable CD or DVD.  Do you have that?  Can you get into Command Prompt if you do not have it?  Does someone else you know have a Windows 7 OS?  You can make one from any windows 7 OS.
Once you get to Command prompt, do the following:
in C:\ type
chkdsk /r /f
then hit enter.  This will try to repair the corrupt files For Windows 7 using repair method can get you to the CMD prompt.

If you do not have this then you can use a boot disk from another company.  I use Kaspersky Rescue Disk  and following the instructions.  This will boot to a OS that will allow you to get your files off your HD, and then scan and fix issues with it.

Overall the EXPLORERFRAME.DLL is more than likely the issue.  So get your files first, you can also do this by disconnecting the HD and plugging it into your other computer as a USB device.  or by using the Rescue Disk and doing it that way.

If both do not work, then you need to reinstall your OS.

If you have questions please ask.

Good day,

This is my first, and hopefully last, thread on these forums as I've been experiencing a repeating problem over the last few days. After turning on my PC (Custom-built: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit; AMD Phenom(tm) II X6 1100T Processor (6 CPUs) ~3.3 GHz; 8192MB RAM), Windows will proceed as normal up until the "Welcome"-screen. After this screen, instead of my desktop, I'm left with nothing but a working cursor on a black screen. Keyboard, Ctrl+Alt+Delete/Ctrl+Shift+ESC and clicking with the mouse are all useless at this point.

So far I've been able to restore functionality by doing a hard reboot into Safe Mode and using the system restore tool to a previous restore point each time. I've tried using the "low resolution" and "last known working configuration" options in the boot menu on startup, but these gave me the same results as a normal boot. I've held off trying many other things recommended on the internet considering my limited knowledge and understanding of this subject, as it is almost never a good thing to simply experiment with these kinds of things.

I've downloaded the trial version of Malwarebytes and used it to scan my pc thoroughly. It came up with several infections by what seems to be a trojan. The so-called "Vendor" is called "Trojan.Agent", and these infections seem to occur in mostly randomly-named maps in the Temp files (e.g. temp\<random>\plugin.dll) and more specifically this... A:Black screen with cursor enabled on startup (Windows 7)

At the cost of moving this thread upwards, I'd like to add to my previous post that Malwarebytes found a Trojan.Agent file in the registry. The malicious software found by Malwarebytes is described below, and a screenshot of the scan results is attached to this post.

Vendor; Category; Item
Trojan.Agent; File; C:\ProgramData\Windows\msseedir.dll

After having a frustrating malware which kept closing Malwarebytes, redirecting some links to other sites, disabling access to some sites as Symantec.com, I decided to follow a step by step guide to removing Malware, which I got up to a stage of using Combofix. The guide didn't warn me of any dangers, and I should've researched it, but now after failing the Combofix Microsoft Recovery Console, whenever I start up my PC, it's stuck on a cursor with a black screen. I recently bought a new computer (all separate components which my brother assembled for me) and everything works fine. But as soon as I launch any game (like Crysis, Painkiller, Bioshock) the screen turns black and it doesn't respond to anything anymore. Old online games like quake live run like a charm though. I need Urgent help please. I have Windows Vista Home Premium x64 on a Gateway laptop. Whenever my recharger is plugged in to my laptop, and I try to use my laptop, the screen goes very dark (you can still sort of see, but its really dark to even work with the laptop). This happens about 5-10 seconds after I open my laptop's screen. In order to get rid of the darkness, I close the laptop's screen, reopen it, and 5-10 seconds later the screen goes black again. When I do not have my recharger plugged in, this problem won't happen. I also tried System Restore, which failed. However, when I go on Safe Mode, the problem does not occur even with the recharger plugged in. By closing the laptop screen, I mean taking the head (idk whats its called) and putting it down and picking the head back up. I really appreciate the help guys, I really need to get my laptop working again. For any other information about the laptop required, please ask. Thanks!

my desktop screen goes black/blank all of a sudden like it's in sleep mode ( the power doesn't actually turn off at any point and there's nothing i can do to turn it back on except use the power button on the tower). if there is sound at the moment of the crash then it just loops rapidly again and again to infinity.

i first dusted the tower and thought that was it since there was a huge amount of dust inside and after doing it worked fine for almost 2 days when it started doing the same thing again. the fastest it crashes is when i tried to play WoW (only a few minutes) and play youtube videos (10+ min). my graphics card is a geforce 210 512mb and i've had it for about a year, worked fine all this time. when i took it out last time it was really hot, i'm not sure how hot it's supposed to be but it burned my fingers more or less.

i have the same system and components, i play the same games and run the same apps as i did before when it was working well ( i am not sure if i had any crashes of this sort in the past but i believe it did happen once or twice over at least a year). i don't play and high end graph games or anything that needs a better card.

Replace the video card, but first check the fan on it if it has one. Make sure it is running

My laptop from time to time will just shut down the screen to a black screen, I can still hear things running in the background, example a game will be playing but nothing on screen. I have to push the button to shut the whole computer down and restart, could it be the screen going, or is there a fix for this, Thank you so much,

Hello everyone, I'm new here, and I want to start by saying I have minimal experience with my computer (I just built it yesterday using a YouTube video to guide me) so when replying with an answer, don't hesitate to ask obvious questions.

I built my gaming computer yesterday, and it turned on, I installed Windows 10, and everything was working fine. However just a while ago, I took out one of the smaller cables that goes into the CD drive (not the one that supplies power, but the other one) and connected it to my hard drive, because I only had two of those cables and one was going into my SSD. I wanted my computer to detect both hard drives, so I went into the BIOS, and I saw that it acknowledged both hard drives, and then I clicked save and reset. Unfortunately, the new problem is, my monitor won't display anything. It was working 100% fine, and all I did was change the smaller cable from the CD drive to the hard drive, and now my monitor won't display. The cables going into the SSD and the HDD are both connected into the SATA ports on my motherboard, and they both are also connected to my power supply. I have checked to see if it was the monitor by some unlucky chance, and it is working fine (I plugged it into another computer, using the same power outlets, so it's not the outlets either). My computer turns on, and I hear no beeps or anything, and my screen does not display "no input" or anything like that, it simply has a black screen, the monitor is on, and c... Read more

My operating system is VistaStarter SP1, I am using a built in graphics card NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 with max. memory of 313MB. This problem occurs when I play a game called "Special Force Online" and when I maximize spider solitaire... how mysterious. It also shows in the Nvidia Control Panel. Just view the attachment or link for the sample image. hope this problem will be solved so I can avoid reinstalling my OS. Its so painful...Here's the image sample:

Hello all

Just got myself this (old) new computer, that I was going to use for a media center. But it randomly crashes, and i can't seem to figure out why. I formated it yesterday, so I doubt it would be a virus.

Sometimes it goes black, and picture returns within a few seconds, but other times it freezes up completely. When I restart it (with the power button) I cant get pasted the BIOS screen, but if I unplug the power supply, and hit the power button a few times and then plug in the power, it starts up like normal. (does that make it a RAM issue?)

Freezes have happened doing the following: Using XBMC (both in menus and while watching a video), while Internet Download Manager was running. While file transfer was running, and a few times while i wasnt at the computer.

Specs:

Windows 7 Ultimate x64
ATI Radeon HD 5670
Intel Core i3 CPU
6GB RAM
Phillips TV (Connected with HDMI)

Let me know if you need any other information.
Thanks

The problems you describe typically mean hardware problems. Please follow the http://www.sevenforums.com/crashes-d...tructions.html to provide us with your system logs and application logs. Those can help to find software conflicts, system errors, application errors, and sometimes point to hardware problems, as well. You do not have to be getting a blue screen crash for those to help us determine the cause of your problems.

Hello,
I am not sure if this is the right place to ask my question, but I have a HP Pavilion dv9610us Notebook, running Windows vista 32bit.
I was working in 3ds max 2011 yesterday, and then my screen began to flicker and go semi-black with horizontal/vertical white lines, and it kept going back and forth until the screen went black altogether.
I restarted it a few times, and most recently the screen appeared for a few seconds, and then it flickered again and kept going black, so I turned it off.
I am not very familiar with PC computers, so I am not sure what is the problem, but I am hoping that someone can understand my issue and give a solution to it! I have read around on various sites that say it may have to do with a backlight bulb issue or something along those lines, but I have no idea if that's what it is.
Also, I connected it to my tv, and the screen shows up on there... so I don't what that means, but hopefully it's not too complicated to fix.
Now, I am thinking it's the screen/display inverter, but I could be wrong. Is the problem that I need a new screen/display inverter, or is it something else?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Welcome
There could be several reasons for your problem, but I am leaning toward your graphics driver, see if it works in safe mode.
