I have a two year old Dell PC with Windows 7. I got a virus in my computer that by phone and computer takeover Norton located in my MBR. When they cleaned it my computer will no longer boot up. Norton worked with me for three days on the problem but we were unable to fix the computer. I followed other web sites and repaired my MBR but it still will not boot up. I tried System Repair, Check point, Image, and Dell system restore and all failed. I have tried to use the Windows install CD and all I get is a black screen with a flashing cursor and then after 3 minutes the compute attempts to boot again and fails. I tried everything to try and wipe the drive from C prompt and it will not let me. I have very weak computer skills but I can follow directions and I have wiped a previous computer I owned. (I confirmed that my CD drive is working) I also should mention I have a second hard drive on my computer that I backed everything up to.

A:Dell Computer PC will not load Windows install CD from computer crash

See if you can reset the BIOS hardware/software connections and then clear the CMOS to access your Windows 7 install disc.
Resetting hardware/software connections in the BIOS and clearing temporary memory of corruption:Shut down and turn off the computer.
Unplug the computer from the wall or surge protector (then remove the battery if it is a laptop).
"Remove the computer from any port replicator or docking station, disconnect
cables to printers or devices such as external monitors, USB memory sticks or SD cards, headset or external speakers, mouse or auxiliary keyboard, turn off WIFI and Bluetooth wireless devices." (Use Hard Reset to Resolve Hardware and Software Issues HP Pavilion dv5000 Notebook PC series - HP Customer Care (United States - English))
Hold down the power button for 30 seconds. This closes the circuit and ensures all
power from components is drained to clear the software connections between the BIOS
and hardware and clear any corruption in the temporary memory.
(If it is a laptop, plug the battery back into the laptop and then) Plug the computer back into the wall. Do not reconnect any unnecessary peripherals; monitor, keyboard,
and mouse should suffice and be the only peripherals reconnected.
Turn it on to reinitialize the software connections between the BIOS and hardware

Clear the CMOS:Use your system manual to find instructions for accessing the BIOS...
In the BIOS, go to the EXIT screen...
Choose load setup/optimized defaults... Read more

I had to reinstall Windows XP on a Dell computer. The owner of the computer didn't have the original reinstallation disk so I used a Dell reinstallation disk that I have used to install Windows on many other Dell and HP computers in the past without a problem. This time it installed but seems to skip past the part near the end where it asks for all users names and the part where it checks for connectivity. That itself may not be a problem. However when I boot into the desktop I can't get onto the internet. I went into network connections and don't find any local area connection or net adapter.I don't know what to do at this point. Any suggestions would be great!

My mother has a new dell computer windows 8 bought a month ago. It has given her trouble from day one but now is becomming unbearable to use. Simple tasks like browsing the web will hang or crash. Desktop based programs become unresponsive routinely. The computer has some serious memory issues that occur from the second it is booted up fresh. I cannot even open task manager because the comp has no free memory. Metro interface seems to function properly even when the desktop was just having so much trouble. I have no idea how i can solve this problem because i cannot even get the computer to open simple troubleshooting programs like task manager to try and diagnose. I am at my wits end and just about to the point where I am going to install W7 over her computer bc it never gave me so much trouble. I am sure this has something to do with W8 or drivers memory leaks. I just dont understand how it is performing so poorly essentially running on default manufacturers settings and drivers. I know for certain this is not how W8 is supposed to run. Please help me fix this. Dell XPS 15 Win8.

A:Windows 8 Dell Computer

It could have been something she installed or even a virus.

If your just going to install Windows 7 anyways make sure the laptop has drivers from Dell.

Don't forget to also back up her data!

The only thing that I can suggest at this time would be to call Dell & try to obtain a reinstall CD. It's been a few years back, they furnished me one free of charge for an old Latitude D610 that I purchased & needed to reinstall the OS on later due to massive file issues.

There is no way to legit download XP, you'll need reinstall CD.

Hopefully the folks at Dell can assist with this.

First of all I know that a dell is not the best Computer and i don't want responses saying: "Don't get a dell" or "Get a life dell user". My computer is freezing every 5 seconds it seems. I have removed a ton of programs i don't use, Scanned for viruses and Malware, and installed 2gb's more memory. I have a dell computer with Windows 7 64bit. I have managed to take a screenshot of my resource monitor when it freezes.

The image is posted as an Attachment because i havn't made 5 posts yet and cant insert an image.

It seems to me everything just stops. Please help.

PS. My computer froze 6 times just writing this post.

By the way it doesn't freeze all the time. It will have episodes of freezing all the time usually when i am playing a game. But this game is only using 2/6 of my memory but is using 100% of my CPU.

EDIT: Oh, I have also Defragmented my disk.

A:Windows 7 Dell computer freezing a lot

Go here and do the memory and hard drive tests, then attach any minidumps you may have. If they exceed the size limit, zip them. What is the Dell's make and model?

Hi -
Are you logged on as Administrator, or is this another user account ?

Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete, and then click Change a password.

Type your old password, type your new password, type your new password again to confirm it, and then press Enter.

If there is no old password listed, leave the area blank and reboot the computer.

Note - Because you are logged in as Administrator, you can create or change passwords for all user accounts on this computer.
If you are not logged in as Administrator, you may not be able to change a log on password -

Hi! A friend of mine had her hard drive crash. It was windows xp & her disk was broken so she asked me to help her out. I cloned my windows xp planning on putting in her key that she still has for xp. The problem is it runs fine on my dell computer, but when I load the hard drive into her HP it comes up and says did not load properly and that I need to make a choice. Safe mode, safe mode w/without networking, last known good configuration, start normally. Have tired all & nothing works & it just goes right back to the beginning & starts all over again. When I bring it home though and put it on my dell runs fine. Can anyone help me out?????

A:Windows xp works on dell computer but not HP

G'Day,
I might be corrected on this advice, but here goes..........

I am of the opinion that Dell and Hp Compaq have their own 'versions' of Windows that are pre-installed on their machines.
Having said that...I would venture to add that your Dell copy will not operate on a Hp machine and vice versa, simply because of the bloody - mindedness of each of those two companies.

You might have to get your friend to contact Hp directly to see what sort of solution that they can come up with.

Can I install Windows XP on my dell computer? I mean the regular one that you'd buy in a box at the store. I seem to be having more trouble than it's worth using the Dell Operating System CD to reinstall it. I'm trying to delete the current windows on the hard drive and do a fresh install like I posted before, but it says it can't because it needs the files already installed to make the new install. So what I'm saying is, can I dump the dell disk and just use the real one? I have a feeling that would fix it.

Hi!

I have a Windows XP Home CD I got from dell with my laptop (almost 2 years ago). Well I uninstalled it from my laptop and started using Windows XP Professional right away, and haven't touched the XP home since. One of my friends is having me build a computer for her on a budget, and if I get another license, it'll throw her over the budget. So I have one question: Will I be able to install the XP Home I got with my dell onto the computer with any activation problems? I know I shouldn't, but just to be on the safe side, I thought I'd ask...

A:Installing Dell Windows XP Home on another computer

Welcome to Techspot

Do everybody a favour and install Windows 2000 Pro, if you have that lying around.
No activation problems, and (in my opinion) much more stable than XP.
Install W2K/SP4, update IE to version 6/SP1, then do a full windows-update.
Now take an image of that install, using Drive Image or Acronis TrueImage.
Then install whatever else.

I'm not the smartest person when it comes to computers so forgive me if I'm not clear with my question. When I try to start up my computer it gives this message: Primary hard disk drive 1 not found/Secondary hard disk drive 1 not found/ WARNING: Dell's Disk MonitoringSystem has detected that drive 0 on the primary EIDE controller is operating outside of normal specifications. It is advisable to immediately back up your data and replace your hard-disk drive by calling your support desk or Dell Computer Corporation. A:old dell computer running Windows XP some what slow

Typically slowness can be down to accumulated "junk" files, temp files, seriously fragmented drive...; cookies, an extensive history...Have you run the windows disk cleanup utility?Try that for a start. Then perhaps run a couple of cleaner utils...Suggest run in this order:Adwcleaner - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/dow...malwarebyter - https://www.malwarebytes.org/free/ccleaner - http://www.filehippo.com/download_c...Be aware of course that a Celeron is a nobbled processor. The full blown chip has (as I understand it) a maths co- processor, whereas the Celeron doesn't. In effect it's been nobbled... So it will never really spin along a rate of knots compared to the full blown cpu; and thus will be a little tardy, slow, sluggish with most current games? The graphics card too will effect how it performs with games...Incidentally, what model Dell do you have?message edited by trvlr

Wow. After using this new Dell business computer (Vostro 270) for 2 weeks, to suddenly have that message appear in the lower-right corner was awful. Running a check utility from Microsoft brought me to a page that said to pay up $149. I called Dell and they said oh, we've seen this with some Microsoft updates -- be careful with those. So I used a System Restore point, and got rid of that Windows 7 Not Genuine message. (I ran complete system scans with Microsoft's System Essentials and Malwarebytes, and no virus was found.) I've used Windows since release 3.1 (pre-Windows 95), and have always scoffed at the Mac fans. No longer. I am a programmer by profession. The integration of this system with my XP computers was a nightmare. File permissions has been a nightmare. And now this. For business purposes I still need a few Windows machines, but for everything else I'm switching to Mac. This machine has wasted so much of my time to set up. Bitter? You bet.

My ISP (Qwest) has repeatedly blocked my internet access due to malware/bot detection over the past 3 months.I have 5 computers on my network, but Qwest is not able to tell me which one it is coming from. I will submit a separate topic for each computer. This one is for a Gateway laptop running windows Vista Home SP1 wireless to the router. When this started happening, I was using ZoneAlarm Extreme Security only for my computer security. My ISP (Qwest) has suggested many different software solutions, which I have implemented and scanned with. They include Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool, TrendMicro RUBotted, BotHunter, Microsoft Security Essentials. I have also received information from several local computer techs to use MalwareBytes, SuperAntiSpyware, AVG free and Avast Anti-virus. The last one I spoke with said everything Qwest has suggested is useless as is AVG free and ZoneAlarm (except maybe the firewall). He recommends MalwareBytes, SuperAntiSpyware and Avast. Quick scans by any of these programs find nothing. Full scans produce adware cookies, but nothing else for the past month+. I pretty much run a full scan by one of them each day and remove anything that they find. Here is the most recent log Qwest sent me of the detected Bot activity. This is the first time I have heard that it is Torpig, which I guess is an infection of the master boot record, which can cause all the other programs to not be able to detect it.Date & Time (GMT) Source Port MW TypeDate/... We have a couple Dell computers and want to install the generic Windows 7 Home Premium x86 ISO file X17-58996.iso . We have two valid unused Dell Windows 7 HP authentication keys.

1. Will there be a problem installing generic Win7HPx86 instead of the version from a Dell disk (which includes all Dell bloatware)?

2. Is there any special reformatting to be done on the hard disk or will it simply happen upon installation?

3. Are the Win7HPx86 serial product keys Dell provided able to authenticate the generic version of Win7HPx86 (even though it may require activation by phone or some MS interaction)?

Thanks!

I am working with a friend whose Dell small form factor desktop computer (OptiPlex 3010, Core i5) running Windows 7 Premium randomly shuts down almost exclusively at night when it is not even being accessed by anyone. I suspect it could be because of heat since the AC is turned off at night in this small office building.
I am in the process of collecting its configuration details so for now, information is sketchy. There is a UPS feeding power to this computer. When it shuts down, it does not reboot by itself. I have looked at the EventViewer logs and do not see any major (red) events. The computer is being used as a 'server', primarily to serve network storage for sharing files with his 3 office computers.
With this limited information, I am asking if there is a sticky troubleshooting guide to systematically test and identify the root cause of this issue to bring some reliability to his little 'server'.
If it is determined to be because of heat, what can be done other than keeping the AC on all night?
Thank you.

A:Windows 7 Premium Dell computer random shutdown troubleshooting

Hi rmk9785e, Welcome to Sevenforums.

Try this,

1. Click Start.
2. Type Power Options in Start Search.
3. Click on Change Plan Settings next the power plan.
4. Click the drop down and select Never for the option “Put the computer to sleep”.
5. Now check if the issue still persists or not.
6. Also check the settings by clicking on “Change Advanced Power Settings”.
7. Expand Sleep under Power Options window.
8. Set all the options under sleep to Never and check.
I also suggest that you check if any key on the keyboard is assigned to go to sleep when pressed on it.
If the issue still persists, then you may try disabling the sleep option from BIOS (Basic Input Output System), for this you may need to contact the computer manufacturer for further assistance.

I click on it to have in installed and after a while the installation freezes. I tried to restart the PC... but could not do it. I had to cut off the power to shut it down. The .exes were called sprtstart64.exe and i cant remeber the last one completely but it also ended with start64.exe and I've already tried updateing the video driver, changing to a different monitor, and using the system recovery disk and nothing has worked so far so if anyone can fix this please help.

Did you update the drivers using those from Dell, or another site?

Which Windows 7? 32 or 64 bit?
RIGHT click "computer".
left click "properties".

Is the computer new or pre owned / used / refurbished?

Did the problem begin right out of the box?

Have you contacted Dell? This system might be under warranty.

What happens if you boot directly to safe mode?

Edit:
Is this your system?

I have a Dell Inspiron 1520 laptop with Windows Vista OS. I have a Dell 926 printer interfaced to it via USB. Printer driver is installed and the printer does communicate at times with the computer and does a good job printing. However, intermittently when trying to print a document I'll get a message on the computer that says that communication has been lost and print job failed.

I've checked all connections to make sure they are solid and no debris that might cause this.
That has not corrected the problem.
The other thing that happens is that the document I want to print will stay in the print queue/spooler and if I shut the computer and printer down and restart both it will print the job. And it may continue to print jobs but it's just a matter of time.

Needless to say this is frustrating. I can print several jobs in a row with no problem and then I'll get this "communication has been lost between printer and computer". And I have to go thru the procedure above to get the last job printed.

My wife doesn't understand how this works and will try to print the same job several times with the commo problem and then complains when it won't print.....and then they all print when the above procedure is followed.

Any ideas what is going on??? Any fixes??

The short version of my question is exactly what the topic says-- Can I install a Dell-provided OEM version of Vista on a non-Dell computer?

But, here's the wordier version giving context, if anyone's interested.

About 10 months ago, I guess, I got a Dell Vostro that came with Windows Vista Home Basic. However, I had no interest in Vista (because I already had a Windows machine) and the very first thing I did was install Ubuntu on it. I still have the Vista reinstall disk, though, which, to my memory, hasn't been used.

Now I'm planning on getting a barebones system and upgrading what I see fit. For the time being, I'm going to use the Windows 7 RC, but I'd like to get the uber-great upgrade deal that they're having to pre-order either the Business or Home Premium version upgrade. So, to do that, I'd need an XP installation or a Vista installation. Is there any reason, legal or software-related, that I wouldn't be able to install Vista using that disk that came with the Vostro?

I heard somewhere that sometimes if you try, it'll say something like "This is not a Dell computer, you evil, evil person" and refuse to install, so I wanted to make sure before I pre-ordered the upgrade. I don't want to get the upgrade and have nothing to upgrade, of course.

You will have to go to the dell website look under support and then drivers and downloads for your model of computer. If you use the service tag number on the computer it will make sure you get the correct ones you need. For future reference so you wont have this hassle again burn all of the drivers to a cd so you will be all set the next time.

Can anyone suggest a way to get a dell 770 printer to work on a non dell win98 system?

My friend was given the printer from his friends, but it's a dell and it's pretty muh brand new so he doesn't want to throw it away. It's also better than his current printer

Anyway, he uses the dell install disk but once it begins and runs the setup app it gives a message akin to pirating. Saying something like -this computer does not support dell , or something like - this computer is not a dell.

Can anyone offer advice. I did a search on google and dells' site and here.
I couldn't quite find anything that might lead me to an answer..?

Thanks

Right now I am using Set-ItemProperty to edit the registry values for these policies, but I wanted to

Hello there,

I have an eight year old Gateway computer. It is just a regular, single home desktop. It has Windows XP Home Edition, 1.25 GB of RAM (originally had 256MB of RAM and I added two sticks of 512MB of RAM). I updated my computer to Service Pack 2 using Microsoft's Windows Update. My internet speed is about 6 - 8 MB's per second (cable).

Here is my problem: When I do not use my computer, it automatically starts to load like crazy. All I hear is the churning inside my PC's tower, but nothing comes up on the screen. After 30 seconds to 1 minute, the churning goes away. Also, when it churns, I see the hour glass next to the arrow on the screen. This happens once in a while, but it is suspicious. My computer hasn't been running like it used to, so I'm concerned if there are any viruses/trojans/malware/spyware deep inside my computer that are hiding from my numerous virus/spyware scans.

Also, when this problem started, I noticed that my Internet Explorer 7 has been scrolling up and down choppy on a lot of websites. Right now, if I scroll up and down this message body where I am typing this message, it will be sluggish. But, if I scroll Tech Support's website, it is not sluggish. Even when I highlight this text, it is sluggish to highlight. Websites like -- YouTube -- forget it. Very slow and I can't even play YouTube's HD videos as they are very choppy.

I would like to know from the experts if there is anything suspicious on my computer that shou... Read more

Hello to everyone on bleepingcomputers.com,

First off, I would like to apologize in advance if I've posted in the wrong forum..I would also like to mention that my computer skills/knowledge are average at best..So, I apologize for making things more complicated for everyone.

I will try to describe my situation as brief and accurate as possible..I recently had my computer infected by a terrible Trojan Virus (Trojan.Agent/Gen-Cryptic)..I had help from someone, to remove the Trojan from my computer..They guided me through certain steps like MBR Check, DDS, Rootkit Unhooker, ComboFix, OTL, etc..After guiding me through all the necessary steps, my computer was declared clean..Unfortunately after the clean, my computer wasn't performing properly..It was extremely slow/sluggish, when opening apps and connecting to the internet..I also had Windows Firewall shutting OFF, from time to time..I was then told at this point, to do a fresh install of Windows XP..Which brings me to my current problem..I've performed a fresh install twice, and for the life of me I cannot figure out why my computer feels like it's still infected..After the first fresh install of Windows XP I ran a scan with Malewarebytes Anti-Malware and it found:

Hello,

First off, my computer recently had its motherboard/video card replaced. It is a dell xps l501x. The issues with the colored lines began before the mother board was replaced. Thus, I do not believe a faulty motherboard is the problem.

These lines are thin and occur on the top centimeter of the screen. They are made up of many colors and sort of look like squiggles going horizontally across the page.

Also my computer will not sleep properly. When the computer is put to sleep the screen will go black, but the fan will continue to run and led backlit keyboard will remain on. They begin immediately after the dell logo comes on. I also get 5 bluegreen dots appear in the top left hand corner of the screen.

The lines do not always appear, its is sort of hit or miss with my computer.

I have performed a system restore and and wiped the hard drive. This did not remedy either of the situations.

I am not sure how to proceed as it cannot be the motherboard or hard drive.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

A:Computer gets colored lines on top of screen computer will not boot windows 7

Your screen connector cable might be loose on the end that is connected to the screen. Try moving the laptop while it is running or move the screen to see if it worsens or gets better to confirm.

Also update all System Drivers mainly graphics drivers by going to Dell.com Support>Drivers look for the model number Version of Windows including 64bit or 32 bit download the drivers and install.
If Windows does not boot try booting in "Safe Mode" by tapping the F8 button as soon as you press the power button. Select "Safe Mode" in the options screen.

I shared a Canon Pixma MP170 printer on a Windows 7 Home Premium machine. I can see the shared printer name over the network from the XP machine within Add Printer Wizard screen. When I try to add the shared Canon printer on a Windows XP SP3 computer it says it will connect to the printer to download drivers but than it says no drivers are available.
Then it opens up a screen that asks me to provide an unnamed INF file. I put the install CD for the Pixma in the CD tray and pointed it to all Canon INF files located on the CD (one at a time) but it will not go any further. I also found same type of Canon printer INF files within the Program Files/Canon printer folder, but it would not use those either to complete printer add.

Am I missing some procedure that is needed to add a shared printer on a Windows XP computer from a different operating system such as Windows 7 Home Premium?

The Canon MP170 works both when plugged into XP machine and Win7 machine through USB port

Thanks for any help that someone can provide

Have u looked in the BIOS and mad sure the CD is the first boot device, this should be installable (changeable) in the BIOS, altho your BIOS might not have that option, and u can leave it that way as it will not mess up anything. Once u boot to the Windows CD u should have options to format or anything u need to do.

I would like to install a new video card for my dell machine. Here is a list of my specs...

Windows 7 32-bit
Power Supply Unit: 250w

Current Video Card: Nvidia GeForce 6150SE nForce 430
(motherboard gpu)

Here is the GPU I'm looking at:

Newegg.com - SPARKLE SFPX95GT512U2L GeForce 9500 GT 512MB 128-bit GDDR2 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready Low Profile Ready Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards
I am concerned about the weak power supply and the motherboard GPU interfering.

Should I be considering a external power booster?

I would love to hear your suggestions.

A:New GPU for Dell Computer

I would look at the power supply and see if a normal size new power supply would fit into that case, if not I would "re-case" the whole machine when I add the new video card so I wouldnt have any power issues.

Hello,

I have a Windows 8.1 computer that has a virus. I pulled the hard drive out of the Windows 8.1 computer and hooked it up to my Windows 7 computer via a data transfer kit that hooks up USB. I booted my Windows 7 computer up into safe mode and took over ownership of all the folders and files on my Windows 8.1 hard drive. After I took over ownership I copied my user folder that had 200GB of data to my Windows 7 computer to store my data temporarily while I formatted the Windows 8.1 drive to get rid of the virus. After I formatted and reloaded windows 8.1 I pulled the hard drive out of the computer and  hooked the drive back up to my Windows 7 computer. I then cut and paste all of the data back to my Windows 8.1 hard drive. The data copied correctly no problem but when I put the Drive back into the Windows 8.1 computer I cannot see any of my data that I copied from my Windows 7 computer. Any help would be appreciated!

A:Problem Backing Up Data from Windows 8.1 Computer To Windows 7 Computer

HDDs/SSDBs have identifiers which are are recognized from the motherboard it is installed with.  Before moving a hdd/ssd to another motherboard you need to remove these, to do this you generalize the operating system by using sysprep from the command prompt.  This must be done before moving the HDD/SSD.

In the Elevated Command Prompt type in CD C:\Windows\System32\Sysprep, then press Enter.  Then use the command: sysprep /generalize /oobe /shutdown, then press Enter.

If you do not do this prior to moving the drive you may only receive error messages.

Are the data that you can't read encrypted?

A:Computer Hangs When Turn Off Computer Selected In Windows

Welcome to BC! There are many possible causes, however there is one common cause. Often XP's exit sound file gets corrupt and if it does not run then XP won't shut down. I am not sure based on what you have told us so far if this is the issue or not, but let's see:Go to:Start > Control Panel > Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices > Sounds and Audio Devices > Sounds tabUnder Program Events scroll down until you see Exit Windows. Highlight Exit Windows by clicking on it once. Then under Sounds choose None. Click Apply and finally OK. Reboot if possible, or shut down computer and restart manually. Once it is up and running, shut down computer by going to Start > Turn Off Computer. See if it will shut down on it's own now.If it does, the only difference will be that you will not longer hear the 2 seconds of music that XP usually plays as it shuts down.

Yo, my father has a Dell Dimension 2400 as his office computer(see bottom of this post for tech specs) and I want to upgrade it to an AMD Athlon 64 3300+ Socket 754. What I wanted to do was place the new upgrade into the same case as the Dell. Here's what I plan on purchasing...

AMD Athlon 64 3300+ 2.40GHz / 256KB Cache / 1600MHz FSB / OEM / Socket 754 / Processor

My problem is that I want to get a motherboard which will fit the ATX power connector in the Dell computer and that the Motherboard will be able to use the amount of power in the Dell computer (not sure of the wattage of the PSU). Any ideas for a good Mobo is appreciated.

Tech Specs (Dell Dimension 2400):
Pentium 4 - 2.4 Ghz
Some Intel Mobo w/ integrated graphics
2 x 256 MB PC2700 333Mhz
...etc... lol, nothing much else matters

I'm ASSUMING that the Power Supply is 20 pin (I'm not at my father's office so I wouldn't know). If you're missing any info that you need to help me let me know.

A:Upgrade a Dell Computer...

What is it you plan on doing with the computer? gaming? if the present motherboard has a AGP port you would be better off spending your money on a graphics card.

Your also going to need a copy of XP once you switch the motherboard from a intel chipset to a amd chipset your not going to be able to boot from the existing hard drive. you also wont be able to use the dell recovery disk to reload windows once you swap mobo's.

Most of Dell's PSU's with P4's are 300watt

Hi, I recently reinstalled XP on my Uncle's Dell Dimension 4550. I installed everything and the drivers and I noticed in the device manager that there is one device with the dreaded yellow question mark. The device is the pci simple communications controller. What exactly is this driver and how do I fix it? If it has something to do with an internet connection he has a cable modem with a router as well. Not sure if that would help or not.

Did you install the chipset drivers?

I down loaded Windows 10 PRO two days ago upgrading from Windows 7 PRO which was running fine. I made no changes what so ever and now I cannot get the printer or FAX to communicate with the computer. Any suggestions on how to solve this problem would be greatly appreciated.

A:DELL 968 AIO - Communication not available with computer

Yes. Goto the manufactures web site for your printer and download windows 10 drivers and run the install. Do the same for the modem that you were using for fax, and make sure it shows up in the device manager without a yellow exclamation point, and then make sure the Windows Fax software is installed.

Follow the instructions here so we can help you better: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic323892.html

Are you lookng to add RAM or just replace it?

According to google, the Dell Dimension 4700 has DDR2 RAM at 400 MHz. Both links you posted have DDR2 RAM at faster speeds, so while you can add both of them, I believe, they'll still run at the slower speed unless you take out the older RAM.

So, I lost my windows XP disk long ago...I was curious if it was possible for a Dell computer (We got it around 04 or 05), would be able to use a windows 7 disk?
If there are other factors that would decide that let me know. xD

This is Proview74. I recently bought a new computer and used a "secure delete" program to clean all files off the old Dell computer (4700). I still have the Operating System (XP Media Center Edition 2005) reinstallation DVD for the Dell 4700, which I tried to reinstall by inserting it into the cd drive and rebooting the unit. However, the screen asked me for a password which I cannot remember (from 2005) when I first bought the computer. In fact, I don't even remember using a password at the time.

Is there anyway to over-ride the password, or use a substitute password, to get the computer to accept the reinstallation disc? I tried pressing f12, got into the BIOS section, but I have to enter a password to change the password to a new one. I am at a loss, and if I can't get it reinstalled, a perfectly good computer will have to be scrapped. Would love to get it going so my grand kids could use it.

Appreciate any help to get this going. Thanks for your help.

A:Re-installing XP on Dell computer

We don't generally offer help with password issues here for obvious reasons but F2 should get you into BIOS where you'll be asked for a password. F12 simply shows you the boot menu so you can boot from the CD and I'm surprised if the password is necessary at that stage.

You could enter the Service Tag, which is printed somewhere on the case, into the Dell website and enquire whether they set a password and on satisfying them you were the purchaser, they should tell you but if you set it yourself and forgot it, you're lost. I have to say it would have been an unusual thing to do - do you have a recollection of doing it?

I have purchased a new Dell Inspiron (3847) desktop with windows 7 pro. In fact I have not even taken it out of the box yet.

It came with Mcafee Security Centre which Dell is apparently promoting. But, I might just forgo the Mcafee and install Avast Free Anti-virus, plus MBAM Free, and SuperAntispyware Free. I had Mcafee on a PC many years ago and I do not have anything good to remember about it.

What do you all think.

Thanks.

Tryin to work on my wifes Dell Gx-280 computer. It has a Intel Pentium 4 - 2.8 Ghz cpu. Here's the problem. Left it on 1 night to run anti-virus scan & the next morning power light was yellow instead of green. Tried to reboot several times but power switch light only stand yellow instead of green w/ no HDD light activity. I did get it to turn green on 1 attempt & it started to boot but then just shut off. Thought it was power supply so odered 1 from Dell & replaced it. Did not solve problem. Put old power supply back in & tried again w/ same problem. Finally I did get it to boot up & got message sayin' last shut down was normal & due to a thermal event or something to that nature. Ran machine for several hours & shut it down & rebooted it several times sucessfully. I did notice that sometimes when it boots the cpu fan is runnin' slow but picks up speed as it has run for a bit. Other times it is runnin' like a jet airplane as soon as it starts to boot up & stays runnin' at the speed the whole time machine is on. Thought the boot up problem had magically fixed itself. Put it into stand-by mode yesterday & restarted it this morning w/ no problem. Ran machine for awile & then put back into stand-by mode & when I went to retart it suddenly back to same problem again. I thought I had finally got it to boot again because power switch light went green & HDD light came on but stayed on & did not flicker. ... Read more

Hi,

I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 computer that is about 3 years old. I just got a new battery for it about 3 or 4 months ago. I'm having trouble with it because I'll have my computer plugged in and it says, (plugged in, not charging). The second I take it off the charger it starts to lose it's charge, but while it's plugged in it holds it. I'm down to 13% and I really don't want to lose my computer. What should I do?

A:Dell Computer Charge

Hi and welcome to TSF did you get the battery from dell or elsewhere as batteries bought from after market sources do not always perform well and if your adapter works then you can still use the laptop admittedly somewhat limited, contact the seller and complain

I have a dell computer that keeps shutting down before it even has a chance to start up.
It just started shutting down every now and then. Now it won't even start up. It gets to the opening dell screen, then shuts down.
I noticed the cooling fan started to run really fast so I decided to checked the CPU and found that it gets hot in seconds after I push the power button. Could this be a bad CPU or mother board?

I am running windows XP sp2
Hyper thread cpu
The system is about three years old

A:My Dell computer will not start

Actually the cpu is probably the issue. Normally we would look at the heatsink fan but Dell uses a fan for case cooling and to cool the heatsink and it may be that fan also.
Can you get into the bios and see the temps and fan speed? Hard drives are also warrantied for 4 years but you really aren't getting far enough to have it be a bad hard drive.

I am sort of befuddled as to why a friends computer will not turn on. There is a green light on the mobo indicating that there is power to the computer, but no luck starting up. I have replaced the power button switch on the front of the computer, checked all power connections to the power supply and motherboard, made sure the outlet was good, and am at a loss as what to check for. She says that there was not a storm before having this problem, but did tell me her daughter shut down the computer by just pushing the power button. I didn't think it was that much of a deal seeing as how the computer is 3 yrs old, but I could be wrong. Any help would be much appreciated.

A:Dell computer will not turn on

Dell computers have a nasty habit of "locking up" at times. sometimes unplugging the computer and letting it sit for 30 minutes then plugging it back in will solve the problem and sometimes you have to strip the components and add them piece by piece until you get it working again.

the process is to remove ALL components except the processor( including disconnnecting monitor, keyboard, mouse). plug in and power up shut down unplug, add memeory plugin and power up, unplug add hard drive plugin power up, power off, unplug, add video card( if there is one) power up at this point you should be able to tell if it is booting or not. (actually once you start getting beeps during the add component\power up process it should be able to boot once all components are reinstalled.

it is a pain in the rear but it is the process Dell tech support would lead you thru if you called them. ( I had to do it three times. with my 4 year old dell, once it locked up after I switched a optical drive.) oh yeah before i forget each time you shutdown during the adding component process, after you unplug hold in the power button for several seconds to drain any residual power.

Hi,

I am helping a friend who has a Dell Inspiron N5105 laptop running Vista Home Premium.

It was supplied only recently as part of an insurance claim settlement - she was told it had just been built for her specifically so she expected it to be problem free.

The internet works fine and she can check her email and facebook, etc - but although Skype 4.2 is pre-installed she cannot logon to the service using her ID and password, and neither can I, it just says for ages "Signing in" and eventually "Skype cannot connect to your account - for help click here" but that link doesn't work either.

She has asked for a password reset and logged onto the Skype website to complete this successfully, but the client still does the above - and the same with my own account.

Also, the screen to activate her copy of MS Office XP is corrupted (just showing as blank box!).

To try to resolve both problems, I backed up her files (only a few) and did a factory reset from the recovery partition. The Skype problem remains.

The Office activation wizard now offers to activate over the internet ... but says it can't make a connection to the server, and when I try to use the telephone method it refuses to give us a phone number to call.

I have connected the laptop to a different internet connection and the problems remain.

She tells me that her boss is also unable to activate the latest version of Office that they have too, so this isn't just a Office XP iss... Read more

One of my coworkers brought in one of her personal machines, which is completely new (still packaged up and everything); an HP ProDesk. After going through the initial setup and installing AVs, changing IE settings and all that good stuff, I ran Windows Update. For some reason, a Dell, Inc. update showed up.

Should there be any reason for this?

Thanks in advance.

For the last few months our new (about 9 months old) dell computer running XP has begun to freeze up, theres no apparent pattern to it, but what we found is that if we right click and get the task manager, light up the program DAMon.exe, and click end process it does free it up every time.

We think the program DAMon.exe has something to do with Dells help system and did go to them and ask twice, we got two different solutions neither of which sounded right and we didnt do them. If its there program I assume we might consider eliminating it but are afraid to do that if it would result in their inability to assist in some other future problem.

I am a novice and have been a little leery about doing anything, what ever solution you might think of would have to be simple but if anyone could suggest a simple thing I would appreciate it.

None work. the diag says hd is fine. I'd like to reformat/reload xp on hard drive and can't. On another computer I can get the comuter to boot from the xp cd and it works

You can try resetting the BIOS to default settings...by temporarily removing the CMOS battery...and that might allow a boot.

I have a Dell XPS 410 that is 2 years old. I started getting blue screen errors and called Dell they said it was the hard drive. I replaced it and still kept getting the errors. When I called Dell again they said it was the mother board so I took it to Best Buy and they said it was the mother board. I had them replace it and have had it home for just a little over a week and today I got the blue screen again. It did a couple of restarts on its own and then today just the blue screen. Does anyone have any ideas on what else might be causing them?

Hi, I have had a lot of trouble on my 6 year old Dell Desktop Dimension 2400 computer, it is too complex to go into detail here' but it has been a nightmare for nearly 4 weeks and I am still going to have do it all over again as in reinstall Win XP / or the drivers at least.

It crashes to Bluescreen every time I Insert a USB stick, Connect and start my Printer, or connect my Western Dig Ext HD which has all the stuff I backed up on.

The major problem was that I missed the "install order list" the first time (my own inexperience) but I have found another DELL list and it Contradicts the First order List anyway' Sooo! Is there a site where I can find out what I need the Order to install them and download them onto a Disk or USB as I had no internet when I first installed Widows XP that was the beginning of my downfall. I have been to DELL Forum's and tried to do the things they suggest but you cannot delete all the USB,s in Disc Manager/ Devices/ USB's/ as you have no Keyboard or Mouse half way through? Thanks if you can help Dasha

A:Can I use other drivers on a Dell computer

Wow. Yea. Sounds like your machine is currently "quite the mess"!

You should certainly start with the drivers on the Dell web site.

Always start with the chipset drivers. I'd do network and storage (IDE) drivers next then the others. Install drivers before installing the applications.

I have a dell computer running XP professional. A few days ago it died completely, my daughter said a few weeks before that it was acting funny. Like pop ups were occurring and web pages were redirecting.

A new power supply fixed the dying part of the problem. It booted fine after installing the new power supply but lots of little error pop ups were occurring. Tried to do liveupdate of symantec and it said it couldn't reach the server. Then tried going to the updates.microsoft site, symantec, and macafee sites .... they all were blocked saying the browser could not get to them.

Then I let "microsoft security essentials" install. It said there were several malware/spyware/trojan horses on the machine. After reboot it know goes through BIOS just fine but then goes to a blank screen. Doesn't look like it even is booting into the OS .....

I don't know what to do at this point ....If I don't here from some body in the next day on this forum I am going to go ahead and just wipe the drive and install XP professional again.

Moms in Fl... says all the sudden her computer won't boot up, it acts as if it wants to boot, all the lights come on, such as the keyboard and all, but theres no video at all, then the computer shuts back down....

I'm a long way away, and at a loss as to what I should tell her, without looking at it myself.... and I'm no guru thats for sure, I'd probably try to see if it would boot from the disk, but I'd be lost after that!

Any ideas?

A:Dell Computer Won't Boot

No video?

First thing I would check would be the connection between monitor and system and the power cord.

The fact that the system shuts down would seem to indicate a PS problem, with no further info (IMO).
