Missing Shell Folder for "My Pictures" + "My Video"

Q: Missing Shell Folder for "My Pictures" + "My Video"

XP
Im looking for a way to re-create two folders, 1 my pictures, 2 my video. ive tried TweakUI, but that can only move a path. I tried repair (not Repair console) with XP SP2 CD, and ended up with a chose OS screen (which i found out can be avoided with msconfig.) but still regedit has a big whole where my pictues and my video should be. Ive both a SATA and an IDE drive, IDE is used as storage and SATA is partitioned and computer management say Extended partition, with boot on it and system is on the IDE one.
Before it got messed up i had my documents on the ohter partition, which is how i want it.
I would greatfull of some help and a detailed fix, i will fomat but even that is hard as that is part of how it all become so mixed up.

Vince, Tweak UI has that ability under the Repair section. Just use the drop down arrow button and choose My Videos and My Pictures one at a time, click the Repair Now button, click Apply/OK.

hi,

OK, this is a weird one.

I wanted to move the "My Music", "My Pictures", "My Videos" folders to another HDD. I moved the "My Documents" Folder to this HDD without a problem but the others I accidentally set the whole HDD as the folder (if that makes sense). So now the music, videos and pictures folders are set to this HDD and dont have an actual folder to change the properties of. Therein lies my dilema.

If anyone can offer any advice on this curly issue it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi All, Happy New Year!

First time posting... On 1/3/08 i ended up with a bunch of viruses on my computer. From what I can gather they are bad news. I down loaded PC Tools to do a search and found a bunch of Trojans and other nasties...

I have uploaded a screen shot of the PC Tools scan...

In the "C:\Program Files\Video Add On" folder the following can't be deleted:
icmtr.dll
icthis
isfmdl.dll
isfmm
isfmntr

In the "C:\Program Files\Helper" folder the following was found:
turbosearchsite.dll e404 Module

What is this? Do I need the file in Helper?

Please help!

PS: I am not a techno savvy guy. I kinda know what is going on but only enough to get myself into trouble and not be able to get out! I tried a few things to get rid of them but was unsuccessful.

From what I have seen I will be here for a bit. Thanks in advance.

I have a problem with one of my vista accounts' picture folder. When saving to "my pictures", I went back to my "user" folder to find the pictures folder... but the picture I saved was actually saved to what appears to be a 'false' recycle bin; Only, this 'recycle bin' does not behave like the actual recycle bin, since I can browse and even open photos from within it, and it also does not have the "restore" option... When I try to change the name of the "recycle bin" folder to "pictures" (from the properties window) it says that there is already a folder with the name 'pictures', but then refers to the same 'recycle bin' with my photos. How could this have happened? How do we get the folder to return to the normal "pictures" appearance? It's as if part of the software thinks that it's the pictures folder, and part thinks it's (somehow??) the recycle bin (based on its appearance). Thank you.

A:Pictures folder appears to be "recycle bin" but still behaves like "pictures" folder.

Hello Jsprong, and welcome to Vista Forums.

This should be able to help restore this folder for you.
Backup anything that you do not want to lose in these two folders to another location.Use OPTION THREE in this tutorial to make sure that the "Pictures" folder is set to it's default location of "C:\Users\(user-name)\Pictures".Delete both folders.Restart the computer to apply. It may take a couple of restarts before the Pictures folder is back in it's default location. If for some reason the icon is not correct for it, then you can use this tutorial to fix it.Hope this helps,

A friend's computer... total nightmare... she doesn't know much about computers, and it seems thoroughly messed up. Tried installing Windows Defender, and it couldn't find her "My Pictures" folder so it didn't install. So I looked under her My Documents folder. It's missing the My Pictures and My Music folders. Plus, the other folders that are there, such as My Videos, etc., their icons are not special, they look like ordinary folders.

Her computer's "Shared Documents" section looks fine, with all the usual folders with special icons, etc.

Any thoughts?

In Windows XP, fully updated, I have several folders full of mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

But all the figures in the "Duration" column appear to be in "hours" and "minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03", but what I want is "minutes" and "seconds".

Any thoughts as to how to change this?

When I reinstalled Windows recently I decided to move my user data folders to my D drive since C drive is a new SSD - I did this by using the location tab in the properties dialog.

Now, when I click the start menu and click on my username to open my home folder, it displays all my data folders, EXCEPT My Music, My Videos and My Pictures. (of course, if I navigate to C:\users\...... only Appdata is there since everything was moved to D:\users\......) So I go to where the folders are stored, on D drive, and they are all there, but when I go to properties for these three folders, the "location" tab is not there.

Furthermore, I remember the default save location for MS Paint is the pictures folder, however now its default location is My Documents. Same thing applies to Windows Live Movie Maker (default should be Videos but it's defaulting to Documents). I think this is related to the problem I described above.

Also, when I click on the Pictures library (or the videos, or music library) it says there is no folder included, so I had to manually include the right folder from the D drive.

The attached screenshot sums it all up. Of course, when I saved it, I just saved it in the default directory for Paint, which happened to be... MY DOCUMENTS.

A:"My Pictures/Videos/Music" missing from home folder

Hello Marcus,

See if you may be able to use OPTION TWO in the tutorial below to restore those user folders back to their default location on C. User Folders - Restore Default Location
Afterwards, you could use what's recommended in the yellow Tip box at the top of the tutorial above, or try moving them back to D to see how they work afterwards. User Folders - Change Default Location
Hope this helps,

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

I'm not the only person to have this problem. I received a private message from a member of another forum where I posted about this problem several weeks ago. That person also has the same problem with the duration field.

When I click on "tools" on the menu bar in any folder that I am exploring and subsequently click on "folder options" I notice that the "view" tab is completely missing. The only tab I have access to is "file types"

This creates a serious problem when dealing with hidden folders that were hidden prior to me having knowledge of this "view" feature being absent.

What are my options to restore this "view" tab so that I can view the hidden files that I need access to?

TIA

A:"View Tab" in "Folder Options" missing

Other than a system restore, I don't know how to restore the view tab. I can tell you how to enable the hidden files and folders from the registry.
Start> Run> type: regedit and hit OK. Navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\
Advanced
Click on Advanced folder in the left pane and look for Hidden in the right panel. Set the value to 1 to show and 2 to hide.
If not there, create DWORD value with Value name: Hidden and set the value as above.

Edit: Forgot to add, you need to restart computer for settings to be changed.

I have such a mess going I am making another post to avoid confusion ( mostly in me ) I will try to explain.

I have a ssd for the os and then a hd for "D" storage,

Lets say my user name is "Harry" and I wanted to move some user/harry folders to the "D" drive,
I wanted to place the moved user folders into a folder of their own so I made in "D" a folder lets say I called "Dobby".

What I now thought I did was go to harry down to "my pictures" right click it then clicked properties,
then clicked location then clicked move, I then found "D" and found the "Dobby" folder in "D" clicked on "Dobby" and then select folder, I then click it to move and all files,

Now I have a two part problem.
"Dobby" folder is gone from "D" replaced with a second folder called "my pictures".
"my pictures" folder is gone from the user/harry folders list, how do I get it back?
Next problem,
When I go into "D" I have two "my pictures" folders one empty and when I click properties on it and look at the sharing tab it's name is "my pictures".

When I click properties on the other folder named "my pictures" in "D" and go to the shared tab it's name is "Dobby"?

Many of my folders including c:\ and Windows as well as documents show up as Pictures and videos in the explorer window.

While most other folders views can be customized to show as All Items, Documents, Pictures etc. The customize option is not available for C: or c:\windows. (Using the properties pane)

The top headers for the view are name, date taken, tags, size. I have tried to change the view by selecting the right columns but it gets reset.

My office just upgraded, and I can no longer use Windows XP. On this system, I was able to add a separate taskbar to facilitate quick access to commonly-browsed folder locations on our vast network, and another one expedited the launching of useful programs and lists. Each task on each taskbar was represented with a big custom icon to save eye strain. I had them installed in opposite vertical margins, and they were set on auto-hide to keep them out of the way when not being used. Just move your mouse pointer to the left or right margin, and BAM! Sorry for the cliche, but I really got used to the convenience of what I had set up, and I just don't think I can be as efficient without anything comparable.

Now there appears to be nothing comparable in the Windows 7 GUI, and it's making me sick with rage! I see only the option to put a "toolbar" on an existing "taskbar", and no option to create any additional taskbars! This cramps up your one-and-only taskbar, plus the tiny toolbar access buttons require way too much precision for anything that's supposed to be quick. When you've figured out how to bring up that ridiculous button, the list that it yields is small enough to cause painful eyestrain - nothing efficient, much less cool about this at all! I have seen customization options in other OS GUIs that may have resolved some of these issues, but I see none such in W7.

I have tried every google search string that I can think of, and found... Read more

Hi,

When our website users click on an html attachment embedded on a web-page in IE9, the download manager will not display the "Open" option. It will only display "Save" and "Cancel" which our users don't like, having to save the
html document in a folder to open it. Whereas, when downloading attachments like pdf, word etc. all three options are displayed.

Is there any setting to tweak , which will display all the 3 options for HTML attachments as well?

A:IE9 download manager will not display "Open" option (only "Save" and "Cancel" is displayed) for downloading HTML documents.

Hi,
As you know, the Open-Save-Cancel dialog box helps you prevent your computer from affecting by virus while downloading.
So I suggest you test to reset all zones to a lower level temporarily and then please attempt to download this html attachment again.

However, since you can normally download the other documents, I suspect there is some restriction in the website which you are trying to view. I recommend you to contact the administrator of that website if possible.
could you please send me the link of the website from where you are trying to download the html attachment?
Thanks!

Outlook 2003:I'm a massive fan of outlooks Search folders, I receive in excess of 400 emails per day, of which approximately 250 need my attention, even if to reply back and give someone an answer.

A problem I find is that I am so busy with my emails, I often need to clean out my inbox. I do this by setting up basic search folders such as "all emails from my team which are in my inbox only" or "any email sent to me which was part of a distribution list in my inbox only" etc...

This is great for filtering my mail and I would like to create a rule as such:

"All mail within my inbox which has been either replied to forwarded by myself".

I can't seem to find any options and I'm hoping an Outlook guru can help

If you don't know the answer, can you try googling it for me to see if you can find anything, loads of heads are better one...

I added a slave drive to my Windows XP Pro computer, and it appears to work properly.

However, when I open the "Documents and Settings" folder (on the slave drive E:\, which is Windows XP Home Edition -- not XP Pro), I do not see any of my documents, sub-folders, etc. There should be MANY sub-folders (inside the "My Documents" folder which isn't even visible), with hundreds of documents, jpgs, etc. within it.

When that drive is installed as the Primary drive in my other computer, the User "Larry" (which is me) has all Administrative privileges. On the computer that I'm running now (with the slave drive in it), I also have Administrator privileges. I own both computers.

My User Name "Larry" is password-protected when I login to Windows (when the drive is Primary and installed into my main computer (not this computer with XP Pro).

I've tried clicking on all the users; Administrator, Default User, Larry, Guest, etc. (Note: I get an "Access Denied" error when clicking on the Guest "Documents and Settings" folder).

So, the questions are:

1. Why can't I see any files or subdirectories in the "Documents and Settings" folder on the slave drive?

2. There's supposed to be a folder named "My Documents," but I can't find it. Normally, that path is "C:\Documents and Settings\My Documents".

Your files and folders may have been hidden by the virus, go to folder options and 'show hidden files and folder' to see if they actually are hidden. If they are, you can use Grindler's UnHide tool to 'unhide' all of your files and folders. As for the virus, move this thread to the virus and other malware removal forum in order for it to be noticed by an authorised malware removal member.

Hi all,

I'm puzzling this one. In the folder options when I choose 'view' the radio button to show the hidden files is missing. I've already checked the registry at the HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Explorer/Advanced/Hidden

and everything seems ok (value for 'Type' is 'group' etc.). Using the XP tweak (Kelly's corner #155) shows the hidden files, but the button still missing.

Another thing that I encountered with was that from the start menu the "Help and Support" not working. Again, the registry seems fine, and the process is activated (started). This came up when I tried to use system restore option - with no success.

A:missing "show hidden files" button + "Help and Support" not working from start menu

Ok I found the answer (after quite a lot searching), as follows:

1. for the 'Hidden files' radio button - I used methods 1 and 2 from here-
http://www.technize.com/2007/05/13/s...s-not-working/

2. for the helpcenter I just reinstalled it as described here -
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/rebuildhelp.htm
note that the file 'dataspec.xml' is needed to be available for this, and it can't be done directly from the XP CD. The thing that worked for me was to insert the XP CD, and use the file that in my computer (C:\) and afterwards another file on the CD.

Again, all this happened with no virus detection, so I believe that there is no infection. However, if someone has remarks on the HiJackThis log I've put, feel free to add them.

Have a nice day,

Fitch.

The frustration has been for more than 2 years now. I tried to move the photo folders & files from "My Pictures" to "Pictures" but Window's geniouses did not give us that option. I do not need to click to "My Pictures" since they are ALL MY pictures. So are we stuck with this decision or is there a way which I can get rid of 1 of the folders? Same with "Documents" & "Videos".

A:Any way to delete either "My Pictures" or "Pictures" folder in Win 7?

Try the reverse. Move the files from Pictures into My pictures, and if you can, then delete the Pictures folder. Then rename the My Pictures folder to Pictures.

Not a major issue, of course, purely cosmetic, but still a minor annoyance none-the-less:

I have a number of card reader drives that I never use (haven't even removed that plastic cover tape from them to help keep the dust out) that show when viewing the "Computer" window that displays drives. Is there any way to hide specific unused drivers from this view? Not remove drive entirely, of course, I may need to use one in the future, but just to hide them so they aren't visible, until I may chose to make them visible again?

Thanks as always,

Russell

A:Hiding unused "removable storage" devices from "Computer" folder

Hello Russell,

You could check Hide empty drives in the Computer folder in Folder Options to have them stay hidden until you insert a card. When a card is inserted, the drive will display in Computer.

HI, first of all, I found out that my home computer was infected by the lovelorn worm. Plan to clean that tonight.

Secondly, I found copies of 2 files named "folder" and "desktop" in almost all folders. The files where identical so I suspect that there is a virus that's propagating this. Is my hunch correct? Is this related to the lovelorn virus or is it another kind? What should I do?

Thanks!!!

Here is the deal.
In doing drive copies, data recoveries, etc... when we are moving a mass amount of data from one drive to another we run into this problem a lot.
"Error moving file or folder" -- "directory is not empty"
If you restart the move, it will continue on and keep going, restart enough times and eventually it will move all directories.

I think its a programming issue with windows and wonder if anyone has a work around ?

I have a suspicion that the copy process is getting out of sequence. That it is trying to move a folder before it actually emptied it. Possibilities are :
1) windows forgot its place in moving through and navigating numerous sub directories and it is having a problem with “recursive calls.”
2) Computers with hyper threading or dual core processors are spawning the movement of files across multiple processes, and some are getting ahead of the other.
3) It did actually move the file, but the cache or something in memory has not updated, or the full data write has not completed yet before it tried to move the directory. (delayed write)
Yes, you can copy and then delete the old... Read more

A:"Error moving file or folder" -- "directory is not empty"

This is a known issue. It is by design.

As you may know, moving is in its essence an unsafe process. It would be better to use the actual sequence of copy and then delete.

Okay, I have an ATI Radeon 8500 on my Windows XP system, and one day, after my dad had used the computer, the 3D video driver stoppeed working. He can't recall doing anything. So it goes. I think "whatever", downloaded the latest Catalyst drivers, and try to install it, only to get the message "INF Error, Video Driver Not Found" and then "Try to set up your adapter with a standard VGA driver before running setup". I tried googling for info (apparently it's a common-ish issue), but I never found anything that worked. I tried uninstalling anything ATI and then installing, to no avail. I tried uninstalling the error-listed VGA adapter from the Device Manager and then running install which didn't work. Rebooting after that also didn't work (it popped up with "New hardware found" after the reboot, but it couldn't find the proper drivers).

After an unedifying series of adventures I got to http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/download/dld/spt_dld_detail.php?UID=45&kind=1 which has several drivers for my mobo. I first downloaded (obviously) the VGA driver, and tried to run setup. Unfortunately, after preparing the install, an Error message pops up saying "The system cannot detect the device, please confirm that the device is configured properly and restart the setup program." I then tried downloading the AGP upgrade, installed it, but nothing changed. I also downloaded the BIOS update, since it mention... Read more

My friend's computer seemingly got a virus, since it sent an email to somebody in her email list, on its own. She asked me to take a look.

She had a virus checker, but it had never been updated. So I installed "AVGfree" and ran that. It found a "trojan horse" virus as well as some other stuff that it said should be removed, so I did. I then ran "ccleaner" and it suggested to remove a TON of crap, like 500mb worth of files (she installs dumb stuff on her computer all the time). I removed these files. Then I ran "spybot" and it removed some stuff. I then defragged, which it needed.

So here I am, feeling like a hero, but then I reboot and there's a message saying that "lsass.exe" cannot be found. I cancel this message, and then there's another message saying that "ipwins.dll" cannot be found.

I tell her to just ignore these messages until I figure it out, but then she informs me today that she cannot access her email account on her computer. So I've gotta figure out how to fix this.

Any advice?? Thanks.

A:After virus checking and cleaning, "lsass.exe" and "ipwins.dll" missing

She could try the system file checker : tell her to prepare her XP CD (she'll need it if it asks to replace the missing files), then she will have to go to start => run, and type "sfc /scannow".

If that fails, she can perform a repair install if she has an OEM, retail or upgrade XP CD (recovery CD's cant' do that). She will have to boot on the cd, thus she needs first to change the boot order in the bios to CD-rom first. Then, when XP setup loads, choose the option "To setup Windows XP now" (not the one about recovery console). On the next screen (after the licence agreement) she should be given the option to repair her current xp installation by typing R.

Once that's done, if the CD wasn't a SP2 version, first thing is to go to windows update to reinstall XP SP2 and all updates she could have done since. Don't surf on the internet before any antivirus and firewall (either windows or another) is enabled.

I tried copying a fresh version of the file to \Windows\System32. No dice. I tried renaming it all uppercase and then all lowercase. Nothing. I put a copy in the root directory. No effect. I tried everything I could think of, but nothing worked.

Then--doh!--I stopped thrashing and did what I should have done initially: I dug into the Microsoft Knowledge Base and learned about XP's built-in Rebuild command. It can often easily fix "Missing HAL" and similar problems in just a minute or two. If you know about this command and how to use it, you can potentially save yourself hours and hours of manually reinstalling or rebuilding a failed operating system.

Hi,

I have several icons/files from my "User" folder showing up in the "Computer" folder (several in duplicate), PLUS numerous blank icons...

This seems to have occurred after the Common Files folder became corrupted, after I somewhat riskily decided to power off while Vista was attempting to come out of Sleep mode - it had already taken about 3 mins and I was in a hurry - bad move, I know. That delay appears to have been due to an old version of Online Armor, and has now been fixed (by an update). Chkdsk scanned and (apparently) corrected some errors, and I also ran SFC which said it had corrected some errors but had also found some that it couldn't correct. Any help much appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi all,

So I'm kind of stuck.. I currently have the problem where I am in an endless cycle of "loading files" -> "Windows Boot Manager" (see: How To Boot Into Safe Mode On Windows 8 (The Easy Way)).
I have tried to load all of the options -- and none successfully load.
I also end up at a OneKey Recovery as well.. unfortunately, the laptop does not have initial backup or user backup images.
I have a Windows 8 CD for repairing purposes.. however, I cannot load the BIOS/UEFI to change the boot order to load the optical drives first. I have also tried to remove the CMOS battery to fix it.. did not work. .
Also - Windows Boot Manager:
Windows Setup [EMS Enabled] -- does not load properly (leads to OneKey Recovery) Safe Mode (does not load properly) Safe Mode with Networking (does not load properly) Safe Mode with Command Prompt (doesn't load - tries to boot and load all files onto partition that is too small.. can't change partition?)
Enable Boot Logging Enable Low-Resolution Video Debugging MOde Disable automatic restart on system failure Disable Driver Signature Enforcement Display Early Launch Anti-Malware Driver
Start Windows Normally
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Ok so I'm using a custom visual style made by another user however I don't really like the buttons used that I mentioned above. The creator states it is acceptable to change the theme to however you like as long as you don't redistribute it anywhere.

Ok so I opened up the .msstyles file (using Restorator) located in the theme folder of this VS. I went into the images directory and located what seems to be the images used for the buttons. Intuitively, it seems like it would make sense to replace those images with different ones (perhaps from another visual style) and it should change them. However, would this actually work? Could the theme get messed up in some other way (like proportions or something if the new button images are smaller)? I don't know of any other way to change them that would be easy.

But I did run into another problem. For some visual styles I can't even locate those buttons in the images directory. Where else would they be?

Hello guys, the last week I've been strugling with these nasty BSODs. At first I thought it was my HDDs as ntoskrn.exe somewhat hinted towards that from googling it. My HDDs have been causing a lot of trouble earlier as well due to their somewhat long years of service. However, I've recently reformated my computer and installed W7 on a brand new Corsair Force GT 120GB SSD hoping the BSODs would go away, they didn't.

I googled BSOD and I stumbled upon this forum and I thought I'd give it a try. I'm somewhat desperate, as I need my computer working for both work, school and amusement.

I've been trying to run Memtest in order to test my memory but without any results. I'm also currently running on only on 4GB chip instead of two, to see if the problem still exists. Also, without any results.

This is the second time I'm writing this thread btw, I was just about to post it and my PC crashed.

Here is my two logs + dxdiag (last crash didn't generate a log oddly enough).

Here is additional hardware/gear that I use:

Razer Megalodon 7.1 Headset
Razer Naga
Logitech G19
Logitech C920 (Webcam)
Corsair 750W PSU

My temperatures are also good. Both CPU and MB idles at around ~25. GPU's all good too. I'm also using a Corsair 650D chassi with dustfilters at both air-income so dust is minimal. On top off this, I use airpressure to clean away dust somewhat regularly and I also did exactly this 2 days ago when I reinstalled the pc.

Hi everyone!

Yesterday my HP laptop (Windows 7) started getting BSOD with various types of errors (mostly "STOP: 0x00000F4", "STOP: 0x0000007A", "c00021a" and one "missing %hs, c0000135"). Most of the time it restarts without any issues and works fine right after the BSOD and then an hour or two later I get a BSOD again.

I have tried restoring to Last Known Good Configuration, startup repair, hard disk check, virus scans and I also uninstalled any recently added programs I could think of and cleared up more than 50% of my hard disk space. None of these seem to have helped and I still get BSOD regularly.

I have attached the folder from the SF Diagnostic Tool and would appreciate any advice!

Dear Forum,

I downloaded a number of images in the Pictures section of File Explorer, unaware they were simultaneously being downloaded to the Photos section as well. I chose delete all the pictures in the Picture section, but the same picture remain in the Photo section of the Start menu. So, I am trying to delete them all there as well.

Two questions:

1.) How do I ensure that, in the future, things I choose to download-like these images-don't wind up in my desktop in more than one place at a time?

2.) When I went to the Photos section, I was able to select individual images and delete them, but I can't seem to find a "Select All" option in the Photos app so I can get rid of all of them at once. Too many to do, individually. On the left side I see option in a column like, Unpin from Start, Resize >, Turn Live Tiles On, and Pin to Task Bar. On the right side across the bar, are icons for: Refresh, Select, and See More. I've tried them all, but I can't find anything like a "Select All" option. When I hit the Select button, little squares appear on the upper right hand corner of each photograph, but I still need to insert a check for each image, individually. Can't seem to check them all at once. So, what do I do here, also?

OK. This is complicated; please be patient. Some months ago my PC (Win7 Ultimate x64) suddenly came up with the dreaded "BOOTMGR missing...press CTRL+ALT+DEL to continue..." error message. No idea what caused this; the OS had been operating flawlessly for almost a year. Anyway, I tried using a "Windows 7 Recovery Disc" which I had burned from an .iso file downloaded ages ago. After several unsuccessful attempts to fix the problem with the Recovery Disc, I gave up in frustration and rebooted from the Win7 installation DVD. It of course told me there was an existing Win7 OS on the machine; did I wish to update/overwrite that or install a NEW copy of the OS? I chose "new copy" and installed it. This fixed the problem, of course. Once I was certain all was working (several days later), I used Win7's "BOOTMGR" utility to DELETE this second, unnecessary version of the OS. All still worked fine, but it "shrunk" drive D: and left an "UNUSED" area on the drive (according to the DISKMGR tool). I don't remember the drive letter the install routine created. Anyway, I could not "extend" D: or get back the wasted HD space no matter what I tried. Naturally, in the process I stupidly screwed up something and was back to the "BOOTMGR missing..." situation. All of the sudden my "System Volume Information" folders (the system restore folders) on all of my hard drives are shown even when viewing hidden files is off. Tried to mark them hidden, but it won't let me. Anyone have a clue as to why they would suddenly unhide themselves and not allow me to hide them again? This is on XP Pro with no service pack1 installed. Just bugs me they did that all of the sudden. Haven't installed anything recently except Paint Shop Pro 7 and Easy CD Creator 5.2 plus the update patch to 5.3.

Thanks,

I used this "hide a folder" program called "folder lock," and I guess it's buggy because it won't let me unhide the files. It unhides the folder containing the files, but the files are still hidden. They're still there, because when I copy and paste the folder, it shows that the files are being copied, but in the new folder they will be hidden again. Checking the "property" of the folder shows the correct size as well. How can I get windows to reveal them?

The hidden files are listed in this folder called "n|+|-n" or something like that I think, but when I type that in dos or windows it won't let me access them.

PS I contacted the company, but I don't expect a response back any time soon and those files are kind of important.

Thanks!

A:How to "unhide" a folder hidden by a "hidefolder" utility?

Welcome to TSG....

And of course you did not or don't have any backups of these files on any other media?

Actually the only way to gain access to these files is by contacting the manufacturer of the security program ir you would have to learn how to program good enough to bew able to get into the secure area. To the best of my knowledge since this is a security thing and we have no way of knowing whether or not you actually have the rights to get into these files I doubt if you will get much direction toward solving your problem.

Go with contacting the manufacturer of the software.

Orion,

was burning data on a DVD-R
i used the "like flash disc" method formatting it
then went on deleting, moving & renaming image folders..
i think that was wrong to do..
anyway
when i started the burn process it stopped responding after several minutes..
i had to force restart the machine to eject disc..
then i discovered a specific folder i put in the image is very big in size..
checked it and found the windows has created system files and folders in it
AppData, Temp, Microsoft, ..etc
it couldnt be deleted the easy way
used Unlocker, could just delete few folders then the machine stops responding..
and this repeated useless several times..
used the Safe Mode With Command: RD /S.. it deleted the folder..
but after restart windows normally the folder is still there and keeps creating system stuff..
some programs started using this location to run, like Chrome..
i discovered i lost all my history and cookies and had to reinstall it and its still sticking to the Burn Folder's infected folder..
the folder is growing fast.. i have to to wipe it using command and reinstall Chrome again and again..
i need to burn discs too..

i apologize for being too long
please help

I have a home network of five computers where one acts as a common computer ("server") where most data from the other four computers is stored (music, pictures, word processing, movies, etc). All five are running XP Pro SP2.

The "server" had two 80GB hard drives, but SMART was indicating that one was failing, so I replaced it with a 200GB drive. Now, every computer in the house can access the 80GB drive and all of its files but none of the computers in the house (except the "server") can access the new hard drive. I have the file sharing set to full access, and I can view the file folders that are on the drive from the networked computers, they are all listed. But when I click on a folder, I get "Access is Denied." When I mouse over a folder, it reads, "Folder is Empty"

But the folder isn't empty though when accessed from the local computer, only when trying to access it over the network.

I have turned off the Windows Firewall, turned it on again, off again, etc, no change. I have Zone Alarm on all the computers, turned it off, still no change.

Any ideas??? I have over 500 CDs on that harddrive, and I want to listen to music from my other comuters! I'm going nuts here.

A:"Access Denied", "Folder Empty" messages

There are two ways that might work.

1. From a computer other than the server right-click "My Computer" and choose "Map Network Drive". Where is says "Folder" type "\\<ip address>\C$" if you want to share the C partition of that drive (don't type the quotes).
2.
Go to My Computer and and click on the Tools Menu and then Folder Options.

Click the view tab.
Scroll all the way down until you see "Use simple file sharing (Recommended)" and uncheck it.
Click OK.

Now right-click the drive you want to share and choose "Sharing and Security".
Click the security tab.
Click "add" and add "Everyone".
Give "Everyone" the rights you want them to have "Read only" or whatever you want.

Hello all.

First off, I am in no means acquainted with any troubleshooting or fancy thing outside of everyday computer usage, so please respond as if you are talking to a dummy. I do have fairly decent common sense and Google skill however, which has given me enough confidence to try and fix this issue on my own.

Basically, one day I start my computer (running Windows XP Professional SP3) up and get a black screen saying:

"We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this

Start in safe mode.
Safe mode with networking.
Safe mode with command prompt.
Last known good configuration setting (most recent setting that worked).
Start Windows normally."

For a few times, I was able to get Windows working with the last two options, but before I could dedicate time to fix the issue, it became so that none of these options worked, and I got caught in a restart cycle with this screen. Last things that I can recall that may have caused this: Windows Update or CCleaner Registry Fix (just something I do sometimes to make sure everything is working, nothing was wrong prior).

I bought an external HDD enclosure with hopes of popping my internal into it, and saving my stuff onto my laptop before messing around. Oddly, in My Computer, the 2 drive icons (a System Recovery one, and my Main one) would flash for a few seconds, every few minutes, and when I'd quickly click them, it'd say the... Read more

A:"Windows did not start successfully" to "ntldr is missing"

BTW if it IS in fact possible to copy certain files from my laptop's OS, I just realized I can probably just copy those files into the desktop internal (when plugged in as an external) instead of going through the whole DOS thing? But keep in mind, that's the small 3GB partition, so I don't know if that would even work. Unless putting those boot files on that small partition, will help open up the rest of the drive. Not sure how that works.
EDIT: Apologies for the double post, just saw the "edit" button.

There appears to be no open thread on this issue...disappearing context menu "new/textdocument" option.

After trying several alternate text editor demos I found that my registry .txt entry was empty except for the (default) line item...I replaced the entry with an expanded entry found elsewhere on this forum which called for notepad.exe and included ItemName and NullFile etc.

After rebooting and checking my program associations to verify that my new editor, EditPlus, was the default, I found that the "new/text document" option appears and works in all the usual places including the desktop...

But there must be more to the story... Notepad still appears in the ItemName entry. Is this just a default reg entry, with the actual default program assignments appearing elsewhere?

BTW, as an old poster suggested elsewhere X-Setup has been de-commissioned but is still available on MajorGeeks. It has some editing capability but wouldn't add a new TXT item because "it already existed" (already registered).

I tried to associate the file extension .txt to a new editor program
with the well known cmdline programs ASSOC and FTYPE.

No, assigning them through WinExplorer menu does not work.
But this is another problem which should not discussed here.

When I type now one of the following alternative commands at the CommandPrompt then Win7 returns me something like:

assoc .txt=txtfile

"Access denied"
The following error occurs: .txt"

or

ftype txtfile=D:\notepad++\notepad++.exe "%%1"

"Access denied"
The following error occurs: txtfile"

Why?

The command above work fine under WinXP

Hi:

Looking for insight/advice re: KB3054476.

According to Infoworld, it was "Optional" in May, but I was not offered it then.
This week, it was offered as "Important" and "Recommended" (!), but only for one of my 2 Win7/64 boxes.

I have read the MS KB article, as well as THIS FORUM THREAD, the latter of which includes a report of a BSOD due to this particular update.

However, there isn't much out on the web about it.
And most of the discussion about it is overly technical for me.
And I am confused as to why it was previously offered as "Optional", but now is "Important" or "Recommended".

I don't *think* I "need" it (as I have no webcam on this box). And I don't like to tempt fate by fixing things that are not broken.

So, 3 questions:
Is it safe to install?
Is it really necessary/important?
Or would I be OK to hide it?
Thanks very much in advance!

A:KB3054476 offered as "Important"/"Recommended"/"Optional"

The status of updates changes with circumstances.
If an update isn't relevant, it won't be offered at all.
If however it's relevant but the related software is not apparently in use, it may be 'optional' - and gravitate to 'Recommended' or 'Important' if the related software is in use.
It can also be promoted through the hierarchy by MS depending on feedback through WU and error-trapped feedback.

If you have (and use) a webcam, then it's probably best to install the update.

Backupthe files that are importantto you before you reinstall.

The "New" installation will overwrite the current one

If you do not format your hard drive before the reinstall the installation should not harm your files (That's why I suggest backingup your files) and will speed up the installation process.

I need to programmatically make some adjustments to the Internet Explorer security settings. Most of these settings I have found but there are a few I have not been able to get a clear exact location for in the registry. I will be using a .BAT file to make
the adjustments on 100+ PCs.

Here is what I am looking for.....

Under the "Internet  Properties" found in control panel, under the "Privacy" tab there is an "Advanced" option button. When I click on it I get an "Advance Privacy Settings" options box. On it are several settings.
The first setting, "Override automatic cookie handling" needs to be checked in order to access the other options. I can do that by adjusting the DWord value of "PrivacyAdvanced" under the "Internet Settings" key in the registry,
"HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet settings", to be specific.

What I have not been able to find are the registry entries for the "First-party Cookies" "Accept, Block, or Prompt" options, the "Third-party Cookies" "Accept, Block, or Prompt" options, and the "Always allow
session cookies" check box. Please see picture below....

Hello,

I have a folder I named "Latest Pictures" in my extra (non-OS) SSD drive. Confusingly, in some places it is just called "Pictures". I cannot recall its history, so it may have begun as that name. Since it is on a drive that was empty when I got the PC I am assuming it is not a system folder. (I don't actually have a "Pictures" folder on my C:\ drive either.)

Folder shows correct name on left pane of Windows Explorer, however, if I look at Properties for one of its sub-folders the path is like, "D:\Pictures". Similarly, in Adobe Lightroom, the folder is simply called "Pictures". I thought of reinstalling it until I noticed that Windows has the anomaly.

(Note that this folder is not part of a library but I suspect it once was.)

I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Nick

A:Folder name "Pictures" varies in different parts of Windows Explorer

It sounds like the pictures folder from your C was once moved to that D drive. Look into Properties > Location tab whether you can move it back to default.

Also - if you could post a picture of the Properties of the picture Library, that would help understand what's going on. Example below:

Hello everyone,

I recently installed a new SSD to run my OS and formatted my HDD to use as storage. While I was trying to follow a guide to relocate the My Photos, My Documents, etc. folders to the HDD, I accidentally assigned the My Pictures folder to the entire E: drive. When I right click the E: drive and go to properties-->location-->restore default, it shows its original location is in my Users file on my C: drive, but it does not allow me to restore it to the default location, giving me the error "Failed to build the list of regular subdirectories under E:\System Volume Information. When I look at my Public folder on Windows Vista using the Windows Explorer utility, the files there show up only in Pictures view. I.e., most annoyingly, there is no column showing when the files were modified. There is only a "Date Taken" column, which applies only to photos.

Is it possible to change the view, and if so, how? The files I'm talking about are not in any of the prenamed folders in the Public folder (Public Pictures, Public Videos, etc.); they are just in the folder.

Thanks!

Am not sure what has gone wrong, but the last modified date shows 1/04/2012, but i havint touched those folders on that day. I used picasa to pull out all teh pics on the system and it matchs the ones present on the folder. I am really concerned that i mite hav lost everything, and i dont hav back of all the pictures. Can a recovery restore all of it ? I am sure I did not delete them.

Any help will be appreciated

Thanks.

A:Unable to find pictures in "my picture" folder

Depends on what actually happened to them. If they were deleted, and as you have been using the PC for months without noticing, they have likely already been overwritten. You can try data recovery software and see what is found.

In any case, this should be an eye opener that you should have at LEAST one copy of any important data. Preferably multiple copies, with a copy kept offsite. For example, if the PC and copies are stored in a single location, and that location is destroyed...all of the data is gone.

I made a similar thread about this named "How to hide the favorites folder?" and they got confused and thought I was talking about the favorites category, when I was not. I was talking about the favorites folder in the User folder. Now I'm making this thread more in-depth so people don't once again, get confused.

So I am looking for a way to kill/delete the stupid pesky folders in the user folder named "Favorites" and "Searches" forever. Now I've read in a lot of other (unsuccessful) threads across Google and people usually just come up with the reply of "Why would you want to delete them? There great folders for saving your favorite websites and searches!" Well not everybody thinks alike. I know there has to be a way to delete these two folders forever. Someone has to of someway to do this. Whether it be from editing System files to a third-party program (which I would not want to really use though).

Now as of hiding, it does NOT work me considering my user-folder is in the left navigation pane with those two folders showing, but hidden in the actual user folder (example below).

So if anybody can help me on getting rid of these two irritating folders, it would be GREATLY appreciated. I cannot stress that enough. Thank you though for reading this and if you know of ANY way of deleting them, please post it.

I am running Windows 7 in 32 bit mode. When I go to create a folder in documents or on the desktop I right click and select "New". This opens a dialog list of functions. Everything is there but "Folder". What am I missing? Is there a Windows update missing? Is this normal for Windows 7???? There is a box at the top of the Documents page that says New Folder. When I select this box nothing happens?????? Where do New Folders go????

A:"Folder" does not appear in the dialog list when selecting "New"

The menu you are talking to is called the "Shell Context Menu", there is not a built in windows feature to change the contents of this Menu as it is generated from the registry.

go to NirSoft - freeware utilities: password recovery, system utilities, desktop utilities and get "ShellMenuView" and/or "ShellExView" which provides a simple interface for viewing and editing entries on this menu. The tools do not need to be installed, you just run them!

I was trying to patch and install non legit Windows 7 themes and long story short, I have installed Take Ownership and had accidentally click "Take Ownership" of the C:/Windows folder and it took ownership or alot of files...

So question is, would it affect anything? Good or bad? So far nothing different happening. Just feeling nervous as there was a whole stretch of files "taken ownership".

Thanks in advance guys!

A:Accidentally "Take Ownership" of the whole "Windows" folder.

Run a system restore.

Hi, I accidentally removed my "Pictures" from the right side (dark side) of the start menu and haven't found how to return it. I went into "Customize Start Menu" but there's no selection to re-add my pictures. Instead, the Start menu now has a "Public Pictures" link that shows nothing. I would really appreciate help in getting it back there. Thanks!

A:Start Menu; Right Side - Missing "Pictures"

Let's say I have a folder in my Documents somewhere called "thisisit".
Within "thisisit" folder, I have other folders, each named for a student in my class.

When I go to Start > Documents and navigate to "thisisit", I don't see any folders, but I do see all the files from all the folders. It's as if my computer took all the files from the folders, removed them from the folders and copied them into the parent folder "thisisit", and then deleted all the subfolders, named after the students.

However, if I navigate to that same "thisisit" folder, through a software like Photoshop or 3ds Max, I DO see all of the subfolders, which are named after the students.

This just happened in a moment. As in, I was navigating through the folders one moment, then I went to the parent folder a second later, and voila! no subfolders.

Anyone know what happened???

A:Folders "missing" in "explorer" but not through via software.

When I go to Start > Documents and navigate to "thisisit", I don't see any folders, but I do see all the files from all the folders.Click to expand...

Look at the top right of the Windows Explorer window. If you see "Arrange by: Folder <down arrow>" I don't know what's wrong. If the window is arranged any other way, change it back to "Folder."

Even though the tutorial on this forum says there should be a custom option, I don't seem to have it.

Any thoughts on how can I bring it back?

P.S. Does anyone know what that "winrt--{***}-" folder is?

A:"Custom" option missing from "Search again in"

Anyone? Is it the same on your machines too, or just me?

Something funky is going on, I cant find my "c" drive that normally would be listed in My Computer.

Any way that I can find it. It doesnt show up in "Windows Explorer" either.
From what I can tell, neither is it 'hidden', as administrator of the computer (I have 3 logins on Windows XP), all hidden files are showing when I log in.

Peace be upon all of you.
Hello and greetings.

My laptop is ASUS model A455L. My CD/DVD drive was working fine until one moment it disappeared from both "This PC" folder as well as from "Device Manager". It happened while I was burning a CD with Ashampoo Burning Studio 15. My current OS is Windows 8.1 (as what it was as when I purchased this laptop), and I do not upgrade/downgrade to any other OS.

I went through searching the internet for the solutions for weeks but failed to solve the problem.

1. Among the suggestions found on the internet is to delete the upper and lower class filters, but mine is not involved as it does not have any entry that says upper or lower class to begin with.

2. Another suggestions that I had tried was the addition of the following in the Registry:reg.exe add "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi\Controller0" /f /v EnumDevice1 /t REG_DWORD /d 0x00000001"
I did the registry entry of the above by command prompt (admin) as well as manually in the regedit but failed to produce the results.

3. Initially when this problem occurred, the item CD/DVD Drive was still visible in the Device Manager but under the "Show hidden devices" option turned on. The information below was gotten from the properties of the device:Currently, this hardware device is not connected to the computer. (Code 45)
To fix this problem, reconnect this hardware device to the computer.

A:CD/DVD Drive missing from "My PC" & "Device Manager"

First, there are no drivers for CD/DVD drives except the built in Windows drivers.

Since the device is not being detected by Windows, either there is some type of hardware problem or the BIOS is not detecting it (If the BIOS does not detect the drive, Windows will not detect it).

A BIOS reset is the easiest thing to do. Most BIOS have an option to reset it to the defaults. I would try this first.

If the BIOS reset does not fix it, there is some type of hardware problem. Whether its a connection problem for the drive (there are two connectors, data connection and power connection) either at the drive end or at the controller end (motherboard end). Or if the drive itself has failed. Unfortunately with a Laptop, accessing the connectors may require complete disassembly of the laptop.

Dell xps, windows xp
recenlty logged into windows under my username. no desktop icons, could access limited start menu functions via drop down menu. restarted, same thing. Under my pictures (I have about 200GB of digital family pictures etc), there was NOTHING. Not a single file. I didn't panic as a have an external hard drive and online digital picture backup. started system restore to restore computer from 1 week earlier.
successful. Icons back digital pictures back......however, now when I click on the MY PICTURES folder it opens with all the pictures there but it is like there is a hazy cloudy onlay over them. You can still make out what the pictures are but very difficult to see easily. I can click on a specific folder and look at them in film strip view but the filmstrip pictures are cloudy as well until I click on an individual picture. then it pops up clear as a bell. Just very frustrating that I can't look at the pictures clearly until clicking on them individually.
I did another system restore to go back even earlier and still the same problem.

Any suggestions or setting changes would be very much appreciated.

thanks,
Monte

A:windows xp "my pictures" folder issues

I would start with checking for malware.
Then run a program branded by your hard drive manufacturer to check your hard drive for failing.
