SP2 install on Dell computer

Q: SP2 install on Dell computer

I recently tried to install service pack 2 on a dell computer, and about half way through I get a message telling me that installation cannot be completed, and that windows may not work correctly. Every time after I get the BSoD, and a message which tells me their is a problem with the ram. I read about this problem, and I have figured out that the install messed with the ram settings. I don't know how to fix it though. I can boot up with linux cd though. What should I do?

A: SP2 install on Dell computer

Attempting to install XP SP2 in a computer has no effect on how RAM modules function.

What is the model name and model number of that Dell, and how much RAM is installed?

-------------------------------------------------------------

Are you using an actual XP SP2 CD?

Have you deleted all current partitions, created a new C partition, formatted that new partition with the NTFS file system, and then attempted to install XP SP2?

The short version of my question is exactly what the topic says-- Can I install a Dell-provided OEM version of Vista on a non-Dell computer?

But, here's the wordier version giving context, if anyone's interested.

About 10 months ago, I guess, I got a Dell Vostro that came with Windows Vista Home Basic. However, I had no interest in Vista (because I already had a Windows machine) and the very first thing I did was install Ubuntu on it. I still have the Vista reinstall disk, though, which, to my memory, hasn't been used.

Now I'm planning on getting a barebones system and upgrading what I see fit. For the time being, I'm going to use the Windows 7 RC, but I'd like to get the uber-great upgrade deal that they're having to pre-order either the Business or Home Premium version upgrade. So, to do that, I'd need an XP installation or a Vista installation. Is there any reason, legal or software-related, that I wouldn't be able to install Vista using that disk that came with the Vostro?

I heard somewhere that sometimes if you try, it'll say something like "This is not a Dell computer, you evil, evil person" and refuse to install, so I wanted to make sure before I pre-ordered the upgrade. I don't want to get the upgrade and have nothing to upgrade, of course.

I have a two year old Dell PC with Windows 7. I got a virus in my computer that by phone and computer takeover Norton located in my MBR. When they cleaned it my computer will no longer boot up. Norton worked with me for three days on the problem but we were unable to fix the computer. I followed other web sites and repaired my MBR but it still will not boot up. I tried System Repair, Check point, Image, and Dell system restore and all failed. I have tried to use the Windows install CD and all I get is a black screen with a flashing cursor and then after 3 minutes the compute attempts to boot again and fails. I tried everything to try and wipe the drive from C prompt and it will not let me. I have very weak computer skills but I can follow directions and I have wiped a previous computer I owned. (I confirmed that my CD drive is working) I also should mention I have a second hard drive on my computer that I backed everything up to.

A:Dell Computer PC will not load Windows install CD from computer crash

See if you can reset the BIOS hardware/software connections and then clear the CMOS to access your Windows 7 install disc.
Resetting hardware/software connections in the BIOS and clearing temporary memory of corruption:Shut down and turn off the computer.
Unplug the computer from the wall or surge protector (then remove the battery if it is a laptop).

Hold down the power button for 30 seconds. This closes the circuit and ensures all
power from components is drained to clear the software connections between the BIOS
and hardware and clear any corruption in the temporary memory.
(If it is a laptop, plug the battery back into the laptop and then) Plug the computer back into the wall. Do not reconnect any unnecessary peripherals; monitor, keyboard,
and mouse should suffice and be the only peripherals reconnected.

I just got a new dell computer, and when I configured it, I had to get McAfee by default. McAffe is NOT actually pre-installed, but there is a pop-up nag for me to install it now, I have been just minimizing it.
I have installed AVG anti-virus, and want to get rid of the nag.

Any ideas?

Thanks..

Dell P3 - 864 running Win ME reformated HD and reinstalled OS everything went OK until I got to the modem. Installed Modem drivers -conexant sf-1156iv/r9e from Dell site (and several others) computer recognized modem on boot up, drivers install but modem does not show up in Control Panel - MOdem listing. Click on diagnostic and find Com 1 -no modem, Com 3 followed by a blank space, click on blank space and More Info and get the correct Diag Info for the modem. Modem also shows up in Device Manager. Have tried installing it in 3 or 4 different ways. Tried a new conextant modem with same results, tried a modem with an Intel chipset and the computer would not even turn on. Tried an U.S. Robotics external USB modem with same result as with Conextant modems. No modem listed in modem listing. Tried to disable COM 1 in BIOS but it won't disable. Reinstalled ME - no luck
Checked with all the Tech's where I work, no answers. Tried E-mailing Dell twice, no answer

When I powered up my new dell xps 15 9550 this morning, (bought less than 1 week ago) I had a message from Dell in the bottom right hand corner of the screen saying there was a firmware update notification. I clicked on this and proceeded to update the firmware.
since this, I have been suffering from the screen going blank and the only way to get it back on again is to switch off the laptop completely!
I have restored the bios to factory settings (F2) and have also tried disabling the nvdia video card but still have the same problem of the intermittent screen going black.
At the same time, if I am listening to music, the music also switches off, so it doesn't appear to be just a video card problem.
It all appears to point to this firmware update?!
any help would be much appreciated.

thanks

A:Dell XPS 15 9550 screen going black intermittently after Dell firmware install this morning help!

I have the same problem:

I initially reported that my XPS 15 locks-up displaying an all white display, however, I have since noticed it locking-up with a black display or gray display. Recycling power is the only way to get the computer working again. Prior to an automated firmware update, my XPS had been working fine. If you find a solution, please post it. I will do the same.

So over the past 2-3 weeks I kept noticing that my battery kept dying even though I would shut it down (yes window > shutdown) the computer with a full battery. The next evening I would power up and see that the battery was at 20% from full charge. This is a BRAND NEW as in <2 months XPS 9550. I checked my event log and WHAT THE H@#$??? It is absolutely filled with Dell Foundation Service and Dell Product Registration events all saying  " Power event Handled Successfully by the service." Clearly it is not.. The stupid things run every 10 seconds. So when I think I am powering down my computer, it is being blocked by these services and actually just going to sleep... but it actually isn't sleeping. Its waking up every 10 seconds. Can anyone PLEASE help me determine the issue. Apparently according to update service everything is up to date.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1520 laptop with Windows Vista OS. I have a Dell 926 printer interfaced to it via USB. Printer driver is installed and the printer does communicate at times with the computer and does a good job printing. However, intermittently when trying to print a document I'll get a message on the computer that says that communication has been lost and print job failed.

I've checked all connections to make sure they are solid and no debris that might cause this.
That has not corrected the problem.
The other thing that happens is that the document I want to print will stay in the print queue/spooler and if I shut the computer and printer down and restart both it will print the job. And it may continue to print jobs but it's just a matter of time.

Needless to say this is frustrating. I can print several jobs in a row with no problem and then I'll get this "communication has been lost between printer and computer". And I have to go thru the procedure above to get the last job printed.

My wife doesn't understand how this works and will try to print the same job several times with the commo problem and then complains when it won't print.....and then they all print when the above procedure is followed.

Any ideas what is going on??? Any fixes??

You will have to go to the dell website look under support and then drivers and downloads for your model of computer. If you use the service tag number on the computer it will make sure you get the correct ones you need. For future reference so you wont have this hassle again burn all of the drivers to a cd so you will be all set the next time.

If you are talking about a Dell boot CD that came with that Dell laptop, you may not be able to use it downgrade from Vista Home to XP.

I believe that Microsoft only allowed manufactures to offer downgrades to Windows XP Pro for computers that had business versions of Vista or Vista Ultimate installed. You may want to contact Dell tech support for available downgrade options.

Are you using the Dell Reinstallation disc to install?

Installing XP on a SATA drive requires an additional step:

http://xphelpandsupport.mvps.org/how...ws_xp_on_a.htm

However, Most newer BIOS allow an Alternate method for SATA . . Go into the bios and check the "Sata Operation" setting,

change it to "Raid Autodetect/ATA if it is not already. Now try to install XP ( could be IDE Mode, Compatibility Mode or Legacy Mode - different BIOS use different terms )

some will say IDE instead of ATA)

If there are no such settings you'll need to slipstream the sata drivers on the XP CD, follow the instructions in this guide :

Hi, I've got a Dell Precision 490 workstation that's been running RedHat and I now need to install XP on it. I expected to need the SATA drivers so I've downloaded them ready but, when I boot from the XP CD I get the "Setup is inspecting..." message and then the screen goes blank.

The screen stays in power on mode but nothing is displayed. I thought it might be XP not detecting the video card correctly so I put in a basic card that I've used to install XP on another machine but get the same problem.

I don't have the original CDs that came with the machine and I don't get to the "hit F6" screen to install drivers. The Dell website is no help at all and I haven't managed to find anything on this problem anywhere else.

I don't hink tehre's anything wrong with the machine as it seems to be Fine running RedHat

As a favor, I agreed to work on a friends Dell computer. A "Tech" told her she would need a new Motherboard and she wanted a second opinion.

Turns out, the HD was completely infected with over 5000+ infected files, hadn't had an AV update or ad-aware update in over a year, and hadn't had windows update run in over 2 years.

The motherboard was just fine.

I cleaned her system and then it started giving system error messages like "WinXP has recovered from a serious error. Press OK below to continue." about every 10 seconds. The Event Log showed nothing, and the only thing running in Task Manager that looked like it might be causing the errors was minidump and Dr. Watson.

So, since she doesn't have her Dell Restore disk, I ran sfc /scannow using my (legitimate) XP disk. This did not fix the problem.

So then I ran a repair install using my disk, thinking I could use her Product ID, which is on a sticker stuck to the case of her Dell.

Repair refused to complete. I later discovered that it was due (again) to numerous errors on the HD which were eventually repaired by "chkdsk".

But it was too late for her O/S, as the old O/S was not gone, and the repair install had never finished, so I had no choice but to do a fresh install.

(Here's the kicker.) So when the install gets to the point where you enter the Product ID, Windows XP would not accept her Product ID as "valid".

So in order to get her system running ... Read more

Hey all, I know, haven't been here in a while. Life's quite busy though .

Anyways, I was wondering if you guys could help me get Windows 7 installed on an old PC.

The system is a Dell Dimension 2350, at least 5 years old (probably more). Its equipped with a Pentium 4, 768MB RAM, 60GB HDD, and some integrated Intel graphics.

I'm having some issues getting the install started. The computer only has a CD drive. I tried to swap it with a DVD drive that had the same connectors and everything, but it wouldn't detect that at all. Next, I tried loading Windows 7 onto my flash drive (which I was successful at, for once, lol). I can't figure out how to get this computer to boot into it. If its even possible.

XP is just not as fun to use as 7, and I can't install Linux because I require some Windows only software.

Are there any other ways to install? Its really disappointing because from the specs it might be able to run......

Thanks again for any help !

i have a dell inspiron model 2650. it takes a ridiculously long time to load, then tends to freeze whenever it wants. it's an old laptop, but i would like to get it in working condition again. it used to run fine and with an upgrade in RAM, would be acceptable as an extra pc. i want to re-install windows xp and start from scratch. ( i don't believe in registry repair software which i had suggested to me). also system restore was no help. i went into set-up to change the start-up and have the cd-rom go 1st, but when i put the original OS disk (i've tried the re_install disk that came with it, and the driver disk) in the drive, it either spins and does nothing, or it reads the disk, then just freezes, or crashes. i thought about using an external cd-rom(dvd) drive, but the laptop doesn't recognize the USB drives now either. any ideas on how to re-install things on it?

thanks

I have an extra RAM slot on my laptop and am gonna get add some more RAM. How hard is it to do this manually? I've never installed any interior hardware on any type of computer. Should I send it into Dell and have them do it? Or is there an even better way than those two - i.e. turn it in to a local computer store?

Hi all, this is my first post and would just like to start off by saying this is a great site and I enjoy reading all the informative posts.

Now, my question/s is that I just got my brand new Dell XPS today and i'm going to make a Ghost image of it first thing. Then I want to make a couple partitions and format, then do a fresh install, so I can set everything up exactly how I want it, then make another image. Does the XP Pro disc that comes from dell have just the XP operating system on it like I would buy it from the store, or is it a "image" of what Dell installs from the factory with all of there "junk" on it? The question I'm getting at is,...am I going to have to buy a copy of XP Pro from the store to get a "clean" install? If so, then that's what i'll do, though I don't want to.

Also, assuming I can get a "clean" install from the XP Pro disc, will it let me delete and re-create a partition (specifying partition size) or do I have to use Fdisk for that? My goal is to create 2 or 3 partitions and make one of them a FAT32 partition just for storing Ghost images.

My last question is, after I get everything working properly, i'm going to install a second SATA 74GB WD Raptor HDD (which is identical to what I got with my new Dell). Can I partition and format it within windows using Disk administrator? Are there any special drivers I need to install for the SATA drives to work smoothly during the format/r... Read more

My friend's Dell Dimension 8250 had so much malware I had to reformat the drive and start over.

The Problem: I insert the Dell Recovery CD to reinstall Windows XP Home, and after a minute or so, I get a Blue Screen of Death with the following:

STOP ERROR: c:\systemroot\NTDLL not found

(Or something like that; I'm doing this from memory)

Unfortunately, because of this, I can't get to the Recovery Console or to a command prompt.

All suggestions greatly welcomed.

A:Cannot install Windows 7 on my Dell XPS 15z

ADVANCED FORMAT DRIVES REQUIRE F6 DRIVERS.
You have to load mass storage drivers at boot.  This must be done with windows 7 sp1. CHANGING AHCI to ATA will prevent booting from ANY DVD other than external USB DVD Drive.
Other possible workarounds to this issue (dependent on notebook hardware configurations):

Toggle AHCI/IDE/Compatibility mode before installation of Windows 7 by selecting the option in system BIOS. This causes the default Microsoft driver to load which supports Advanced Format.
Toggle the RAID mode in System BIOS while installing the Operating system. RAID Mode can be enabled after the installation of the Intel Driver.
Copy the Installation CD to a bootable USB drive – using Microsoft’s CD/USB tool or literature widely available on the web. Change the <iastor.sys> file in the installation source with the Intel iRST driver ver 9.6.

Hi everyone,

I apologize if this has been asked before, but through all my searching I haven't found the exact answer I'm looking for. I just took delivery of a Dell (xps 9000, w7 64) and it's the first system I've had that didn't come with an OS disc. So, I'm new to all this recovery/diagnostic partition stuff. I'd like to be able to do a clean install of w7 so I don't have the bloatware that came pre-installed. But, from what I've read it seems like my only option is to create a system image to restore to (which would have all the pre-installed stuff anyway)?

Is my only option to uninstall anything I don't want and then do the system image? I know that would leave some registry files and whatnot, but ideally I'd like a completely clean install.

Thanks for the help!

P.S. I wasn't ready to dive into the "build it yourself" pool. I realize I probably could have avoided this because I would have the OS disc in hand. Live and learn I guess.

HI,
I have a Dell GX280 Optiplex slimline and I am in the process of a re-install of XP as I had some faults with it.
I have the official Dell re-install disc but I did not find this until I put an official Windows disc into the drive. The set up has got to the point where it is asking for the COA license number on the side of the pc but it will not accept this as it is already assigned to the pc via the Dell disc. I took the disc out and put the Dell disc in and restarted but it still gets to the same point and asks for the license number.
What I really need to do is halt the installation, re-format the drive and put the Dell disc in it as I know that this will work. I am not doing anything illegal here.
Thanks for any help.

A:xp cant install in dell optiplex gx 280

Rule out graphics or other problems by running an operating system from a usb or cd. My favourite is Linux Mint which you can download from here.

Download - Linux Mint

Burn the .iso to a disc and boot from it. If it boots ok then the hardware is fine then it's a software issue. If that's the case try and get another installation disk from a friend or wherever and try that.

If the CD with Linux Mint on it can't load then you have a graphics fault perhaps caused by the power fluctuations.

I think this model has integrated graphics but also has space for a pci-express graphics card. So if you can get hold of one of those you could try that..

I've got a dell 4150 laptop. It does not have a 3 1/2 floppy drive. There is a 'M1004' error that pops up when it's trying to boot. Dell has a fix for this but it needs to be installed via a 3 1/2 floppy. So I went to the store and bought a USB floppy drive, installed the drivers, made the floppy disc with the 'fix' and set up the old BIOS so that the boot order would be Floppy, CD/DVD, hard drive. However when I went to boot up it just bypassed the floppy

So I recorded the files on a CD and then booted up that way. It bypassed that too

Ditto when I try to install an updated BIOS.

What should I try next?

I have read numerous threads about this topic; however, none of them seem to answer exactly what I would like to accomplish. I would greatly appreciate any help or suggestions, but please know that I am not nearly as computer savvy as most of the people on this site. The ?keep it simple, stupid? approach is what I need for this to work.

I have a new Dell XPS 8300 desktop still in the box with a HDD pre-installed with Windows 7. Since it was not a customization option at the time of purchase, I would like to install a new SSD to run Windows 7 and a few important programs that I will load in the future. There are currently no programs or data on the existing HDD that I need to transfer other than the OS and the drivers that I need to make the computer work. I would like to avoid messing with cloning and adjusting partitions if possible. Eventually, I would like to use the HDD as a secondary drive where I can load non-essential programs and store larger data files.
Based on what I have read on numerous threads, the following is the procedure I intend to use. Please let me know if I am missing any steps or if I am doing something that will not achieve the desired result.

1) Turn on computer with the HDD installed as-is and the SSD still sitting in the box.

2) Use Dell?s DataSafe Local BackUp to create a System Recovery Media on either a DVD or 8+ GB USB key.

3) For a belt and suspenders backup, next I was going to use the Windows 7 feature to create a sys... Read more

A:Install SSD with NEW Dell XPS Desktop

Do you really need or want to do a recovery? Why not just do a clean install to remove all the crap, and give yourself a chance to set the system up properly.

If you did, you could then add in your HDD, and format that to be a solid data drive, which i usually move mine to be D....and move the optical drive to be E...but that's just personal preference.

Hi,

I follow the instructions to reboot in UEFI mode, access the CD menu and selected to restore the PC, the machine starts working and after it shows that the restore is complete it reboots and shows the same menu all over again. What do I have to do in order to install windows 10 using this CD? what am I doing wrong?
Thank very much for your help
Kind regards!

A:How to use Dell CD to install windows 10

I'm not sure what directions you are using but Restore is usually for returning to factory settings which in your case is windows 7. Start in UEFI mode* and boot to the dvd-cd by tapping F12 as soon as you restart without waiting for any screen. Then select the cd-dvd drive as the boot drive. The first listed directions here should work: * www.dell.com/.../SLN300635
Backup your personal files beforehand because changing to windows 10 from 7 requires a clean install.
If you are still under warranty, use Chat at Dell Support to speak with them for more help with this.

My first recommendation would be to upgrade your BIOS to Version A13. This may allow you to boot from USB once completed.

You stated that the DVD drive spins up then freezes.... Have you cleaned the DVD drive lens with a burst of air? Have you cleaned the Dell Windows XP disk?

I would try these and let us know how you make out.

My Dell XPS 435T came with Vista 64-bit. However, I'd like to make a dual-boot system with both the Vista and WinXP Home. When I try to install XP, I get a BSOD early in the install process saying something like "There has been an error and Windows will shut down your pc" etc. I'm sure it's because my copy of XP doesn't have the hard drive drivers to install on a SATA drive. On my last pc I had to use nLite to create a slip disk with the proper AHCI drivers (that I got from the mobo drivers CD). When I created a slip disk for this Dell, I used what I thought were the correct disk drivers from the Dell Drivers CD, but apparently they're not the correct drivers since I'm getting the same BSOD message. I'm hoping that installing XP on this Dell is possible, and that it's just a matter of getting the correct hard drive drivers to insert into the slip disk CD. I've already checked the BIOS on this Dell and the only two options under the SATA drive are AHCI and RAID - there is no ATA option (that was suggested in the past). Any suggestions? Thanks for any help.

I reinstalled Windows because of a virus, and when I installed it again Dell Quickset wouldn't install. It gives me the error message "Not a supported system", wether I install it from the CD that came with my laptop, or the download from Dell's website.

Not sure how I can fix this, I've tried many different versions of Quickset which all give the same error message.

The dell quickset was working on my system before the reinstall, which was installed with the same disk both times. I've tried reinstalling windows again to try and get it to work.

In my system properties ect it says the correct Dell model number of "Dell Studio 1555".

Anybody know how to get around it? I don't really want to pay dell £139 to attempt to fix it for me, as I can't use any keyboard functions/eject my cd drive without it.

Thanks

PS, my bios won't upgrade to the latest version either. I'm currently on A12, and when I try to update to A13, the program stops responding and closes, so if thats relevant or if anybody knows why I'd aprecieciate that too.

Sounds like the person who installed Windows did not install everything you needed.
Download and install the following drivers from the Dell Drivers and Download Page in the order listed below. Do not use the Dell Download Manager. I have never had Dell Quickset tell me download something else.
• 1. Dell System (Notebook/Desktop) Software - Under System Utilities
• 2. Chipset Drivers (Intel then Ricoh) - Under Chipset
• 3. Video Driver (Intel) - Under Video
• 4. Conexant Drivers - Under Communications
• 5. Network Ethernet Driver (Usually mentions Ethernet/Broadcom) - Under Network
• 6. Wireless Card - Under Network
• 7. Touchpad - Under Mouse & Keyboard
• 8. Audio (any drivers before applications) - Under Audio
• 9. Intel Matrix Storage Manager & Intel Turbo - Under SATA Drives
• 10. TV Tuners/Other Video (If applicable) - Under Video
• 11. Bluetooth (If applicable) - Under Network
• 12. Dell Quickset - Under Applications
? Note the other drivers such as the BIOs, CD/DVD firmware can be updated if you wish but I would recommend leaving these alone. Sometimes if these updates go wrong, things seriously break. If you have no problems with any of these devices then leave them be. You may look through Applications to see if you find anything else useful. I however recommend downloading.
Other Dell software can be downloaded and installed.

I want to do a fresh install of the Operating System with a new SSD I plan to purchase on my 3 year old Dell XPS One 2710. It is my understanding that the Windows OS Authorization key is embedded in the motherboard. I believe it is in the BIOS from what I have read.
My question is if I install a new hard drive and do a clean install from scratch will the Windows OS Authorization key still be valid and work?  Also, would it work if I tried to do a clean install of Windows 10? Thank You!

A:Dell XPS One 2710 Fresh Install

The key for Win 8.1 and Win 10 is stored in BIOS so it should activate automatically.
If you're installing Win 7 using a Dell Windows Reinstallation disk, it shouldn't ask for a product key. If the system came with Win 7, you should have a sticker with the Win 7 product key somewhere on the PC so if it does ask for the key, you have it on that sticker.
Whatever you do, don't install Win 10 on the XPS 2710...
Dell has not tested this model for compatibility with Win 10 and LOTS of users have had their XPS 2710 crash permanently after installing Win 10. Not exactly clear what gets corrupted -BIOS, video adapter or..? -  but the result is a permanent "black screen of death".
Users have taken steps to fix the problem ranging from installing a new motherboard -if you can find and afford one- and installing Win 7 or 8.1, to reprogramming and/or replacing the BIOS CMOS chip on the motherboard.
Search these forums and you'll find lots of threads about the XPS 2710 and Win 10, and lots of unhappy users...
I don't think Win 10 is worth the risk...

8gb of RAM, two sticks of 4 gig.

It came with Oracle Linux installed as the OS.  I purchased Windows 7 Pro (DVD) and have the new COA to go with it.

Do I need to initialize the hard drives prior to the install?

If I add a SSD (it will accept a fifth drive) later, will I be able to put the OS on the SSD?

A:Windows 7 Pro install on Dell Precision 690

[at the edge of my comfort / knowledge zone]

I would be sure to reformat all of the drives before putting them into service
The RAID configuration must be in place before you start installing the OS and programs
When you add a SSD you may have to start from scratch if you want to reconfigure things.

Hi all,

I have a problem!

My old computer is trashed; my sister gave me an old one.

Dell OptiPlex
GX 270 Series
Bios Version A06

Since I had just installed a 320 GB drive in my old one, I replaced her 80GB with mine.

After doing that I loaded the new drive software to no avail, and then I inserted my XP Pro and still nothing.

I even installed a kill disk and that would not work!

I looked at her Bois and it is set to boot from floppy, I have changed that to CD rom to no avail.
Can some one tell me what I am doing wrong and do I need a floppy which I do not have?

Nate

Hi,

I want to buy a Dell system but it comes with Pre installed Windows Vista Home Premium & they do not offer Win XP.

I would like to install Win XP Pro SP3 in it and remove Vista.

(1) Can I do that & if yes how ? I have Windows XP Pro SP3 CD that came with my another Dell system.

(2) How important is it to learn Vista ? I do not like Vista but it looks like sooner or later I am going to have to learn it. Any idea of what percentage of people owning computers now use Vista instead of other Windows OS ?

Thanks Much.

A:Can I install Win XP on a Dell system that comes with Vista?

Well Vista comes preinstalled on most computers you buy these days so. And as for installing Xp (if you want) Pop the cd in to the tray reboot reformat your hdd when its asks and install xp the rest of the way. now if you are runing that xp cd installed on the other system you will have to get another cd key from microsoft unless its a student version or retail

Hi harding9025 and welcome to TSF !

Is this the Optiplex GX150 ? If so here are the complete specs :
http://support.dell.com/support/edoc...n/ug/specs.htm

General support for GX150 :
http://support.dell.com/support/edoc...n/ug/index.htm

Which form factor is it ? Check the front views here :
http://support.dell.com/support/edoc...n/ug/about.htm

XP will work better with 512MB of RAM which is the maximum memory this computer can get. Try to get 2 matching sticks of 256MB SDram from ebay.

Wipe the hard drive with a dban floppy or CD. Then download the manufacturer's diagnostic utility, create the bootable CD and run the long/extended test on your drive. Report if it found any errors.

Check that the hard drive is hooked to the end of the IDE cable that's on the primary controller and that its jumper is set as master and that the CD drive is set as slave in the middle of the same cable or as master at the end of the other IDE cable (on the secondary controller). Enter the BIOS (press F2 at startup) to check that the drives appear correctly. The primary controller is refered to as EIDE1 in the graph that you'll find here under System Board Components.

Test your memory : download, unzip and burn memtest86+'s bootable .iso image file using a burning software that can handle .iso files. Enter the BIOS at startup and set the boot priority to CD-rom first. Leave memtest run overnight or at least do 3 full passes on your memory. It's advised that you test one memo... Read more

I just bought a new Precision 3620 that came with Windows 7 and also the Windows 10 pro install DVD. I have it all setup with 7, but i wanted to test out 10 on a separate HD. Im using a brand new drive here and i use UEFI boot to the DVD and i get tot he part where it says reset, troubleshoot, or turn off. So i choose to reset and it says the disc is missing a needed partition. So then i go in to troubleshoot and i select recover from disc and it looks like it loads until it gets to like 89% and it scans all the drives associated with my card reader and it fails to find an image. Then it restarts and then it goes back into the menu where you select reset, troubleshoot or turn off.
Do these disks actually work or do i have to install 7 and then upgrade? Not sure if i am doing something wrong here, but any help is appreciated.

You can choose to upgrade to Windows 10 with the disk. You cannot install on a different hard drive if you are trying to upgrade to Windows 10. It has to be the same partition. If you want to install a fresh copy of Windows 10 you must put it on the "C" bootable drive. You also may want to download the Windows 10 drivers and put them on a usb key or burn to a dvd so that you can install them into Windows 10.

Hi, first off, apologies if this in the wrong section as I suspect it might be a hw problem. Ok, my dad who lives abroad owns said machine and was edging towards a complete re install due to many problems with XP but before we got to organising that he stopped the machine in mid system restore and now it won't boot up into safe mode even. So deciding to go ahead with the install, I've talked him through getting to the setup screen but then he gets a stop: ox0000007b oxf7a57 etc. error. After reading up a lot of info seems to point ot this being a RAID error that means it's not picking up the HDD properly. He only has the one drive installed and I've followed advice about switching it over to RAID autodetect, seems it had defaulted to that anyway after a factory restore, still the same problem. The only thing I haven't tried so far is using F6 on setup for extra drivers, he's now found the original DEll Xp disk which he swears blind isn't a complete restore disk, would they have been sensible enough to slipstream necessary drivers into the CD? I can't test the idea as he's away at the moment but wondering if it's something else someones come across before?

Many thanks in advance for any advice, not only for saving our sanity but also my phone bill calling him!

Cheers

I do PC repair for low-income people in our neighborhood, and I was brought a Dell Inspiron 1520 running 32-bit Vista.

It wouldn't boot, even with safe mode, and when I booted from a disk no OS displayed.

I ran a utility that scans for and 'fixes' bad sectors (I assume that it merely makes them unwritable). There were 17 bad sectors that could not be fixed. I used another utility and ran a low-level format.

Hours later I used a Dell Vista CD and attempted to install Windows. Some time before it hit 100% on step 2 (Expanding Files) it gave me the 0x80070570 error. I know there's nothing wrong with the disk, but I tried it again and got the same results. Then I tried an install using a MS Windows CD, which did prompt me for the product key, but when it got to the Expanding Files step it just styed there at 0%. For hours...

Is the drive just too far gone to sustain the OS? I thought that if you did a low-level format it rendered the bad sectors as unusable, but this is a 120GB drive. They really can't afford a new HD. Shouldn't I be able to install and run Vista on the 100 plus gigabytes that are uncorrupted?

A:Install from Dell CD - 0x80070570 Error

To me it sounds like a bad hard drive and not just a few sectors.

Hi,

I have been given a dell inspiron 531 with 64 bit AMD processor, running 32 bit vista home basic, that has responded well to RAM upgrade to 4GB.

I want to install 64 bit win 8 pro media centre which I have on an original MS CD. either over current vista or on separate partition as dual boot.

For some reason the dell wont read the MS win 8 64 disk (or any other original MS OS disks I have (vista-32/7-64/8-32)) but reads pretty much everything else (DVD's excepted as currently has no DVD reading software.)..either through explorer or during boot..it is not only original ms discs that are a problem as dell won't read win8-64 enterprise trial iso I burned myself either.

I have tried turning off security software (MS security essentials/MS firewall)..no change.

CD's all read fine via explorer on my lightly hopped up HP tx1340ea running win 8-64 pro media centre.

Can anyone help/advise?

kind regards

Eldred

I got a Dell driver cd with my win7 installation dvd, but didn't notice that I had to insert the driver dvd first before installing. I installed win7. So now, whenever I insert the driver cd, it says that win7 was installed successfully. And when I try going to the Dell Driver website, I try downloading the necessary drivers, but they're downloaded as this DeviceManager.exe file and I can't install any drivers!!! It just says for me to select a driver.

Any help? Is Dell's driver website acting odd, or what can I do to get the drivers?

Thanks

This is my first post on this forum. Thank you for your time and help.

I have the Windows 7 Beta disc and I am trying to create a partition and install it on my Dell Vostro 220 (see my profile for full PC details).

I have 3 partitions:
FAT16 - Primary - 70MB FAT16 - 0xDE (EISA Configuration)
OS (C) - Primary, Active - 152.2GB NTFS (Windows XP Pro)
NTFS (F) - 80.61GB NTFS (Empty)
I am trying to install Windows 7 on partition 3, but the installation is giving me an error: "Windows could not update the computer's boot configuration. Installation cannot proceed."

Here's my procedure:
Insert CD
Restart
Boot from CD
Start Installation
"Custom (Advanced)" Installation
Created new partition on unallocated space (currently partition 3 NTFS)
Copying files... OK
Expanding files...
Error: "Windows could not update the computer's boot configuration. Installation cannot proceed."
Restart and boot XP
Software I'm using on XP that may be interfering:
Acronis Disk Director Suite 10.0
ESET Nod32 Antivirus 3.0.650.0
Any ideas on what I can do to fix this error and eventually dual boot XP Pro and Windows 7?

I have a Dell XPS with 3gigs of ram, 2.2 ghz processor, and it had a factory installed nvida card, a g-force 5200 i believe. The problem is I am trying to install a BFG g-force 7800 GS OC. I installed it into the computer with no problem, but when I turned on the computer the monitor displays no monitor attached. I tried a diffrent monitor just to make sure and its still the same thing. I went into BIOS and all I can do is change the AGP apperture to 256mb which is what the the card is, but still nothing. So my question is, am I doing anything wrong? Is it DELL? I have installed 30 cards so I know the proceedure and have checked all the obvious, I just don't want to assume the card is bad just yet! Thanks...

Hello,

I have a Dell Inspiron 5759, Windows 7 Professional.

Since the last MS Update, I am not able to install any Dell drivers.

My Bluetooth adapter disappeared from my Device Manager, it was there before last MS update.

I tried to install the Bluetooth driver again, but received the error message: The update installer operation is unsuccessful.

I have also tried to start the Bluetooth Support Service in SERVICES and received the error message: Windows could not start the Bluetooth Support Service on Local Computer. Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

I called Dell Support, which, of course, got someone in Asia. He asked me to install several BIOS updates as well as Chipset driver. My laptop is only three months old and everything should be up-to-date before it was shipped to me I do not want to do all those updates afraid that it'll ruin my laptop further.

Does anyone know why I couldn't install the Dell drivers?

Any comments/suggestions are much appreciated.

Thank you.

The Dell XPS M1330 is a great laptop but quite many of users like me can only use the Windows XP  since certain professional software can only run on XP and have no support on Vista. I got my M1330 received on Aug 1 and had to install the XP on it anyway. I got it almost done but still have one driver issue. I would like to share my previous jobs done to save the time for other users having the same need. Also, I would like the community can help to resolve the remaining driver issue so that everybody can enjoy the M1330 with XP!  : ) Part I: Windows XP professional installation CDAny Dell XP SP2 Pro installation CD for previous Dell models (what I used)Advantage of using the Dell OEM XP CD is that it never ask for a CD-key and works prefectly  Surely it is up to you to buy a new Windows XP installation CD from Microsoft and enter the CD-key. Part II: Download XP drivers for M1330From Dell's "Support & Download" website, choose "XPS 1330" and "Windows XP" for driver download:http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?os=WW1&osl=EN&catid=-1&impid=-1&servicetag=&SystemID=XPS_M1330&hidos=WXPX&hidlang=en1. Part III: Install Windows XP on M1330Since in the beginning I didn't know whether I can successfully install the XP SP2 pro on M1330,I made a decision to buy a new 160GB SATA HDD to install the Windows XP on M1330 so that I can preserve my Vista HDD. You can make you choice to (1) Buy a new HDD, (2) GHOST the entire HDD, (3) Directly install XP into your Vista HDD (take you own risk that cannot completely recovery your Vista). Step 1: Modify M14330 BIOS settingSince XP SP2 installation CD doesn't support SATA HDD at that moment, we need to disable M1330's SATA and set back to ATA mode for entire XP installation:   1. Boot and press "F2" to enter BIOS setup menu   2. Onboard Devices -> Flash Cache Module: Change to "Enabled" to "Off"   3. Onboard Devices -> SATA Opteration: Change from "AHCI" to "ATA"   4. System -> Boot Sequence: Move "CD/DVD/CD-RW" item up to the top   5. Press "ESC" and choose "Save/Exit" to save and exit BIOS Step 2: Disk Partitioning and Install WinXPNote: whenever staying in the BIOS menu, you can eject out / push in the installation CDPartitioning the HDD accordingly to what you need, I partition my new HDD same as the Vista as I want to install the Dell MeidiaDirect in the XP too. My order for M1330 is 60GB for OS and remaining 100GB for data partition. Insert the XP installation CD and boot from CD and partition the HDD according to your need. Here ... Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks. If Windows 10 was activated on your dell previously then the hardware hash (unique device identifier) is tied to the product key in the cloud. I am not sure what you can use on Chromium to create a bootable usb.
You can try the Rufus portable tool however I am unsure if that will work in chrome or not as i haven't used it. You may very well have to use another PC. https://rufus.akeo.ie/
In future if you wish to play with operating systems, try something like VMware player as this way you don't mess up the bootloader and your o/s installs.

Hello,
I was directed by Support to a link for this download, to restore my Vista Dell back to factory. I downloaded it to a working pc, but the install instructs only mention unzipping "the" file...there are several files in the folder after the program downloaded. I proceeded with 7-zip to extract. It says it did. I then clicked the desktop icon that was placed for me. It asked for permission to run, I gave it, then started for a second, but nothing happens. I check with my Task Mgr to see if it's running, but nothing. I looked in the folder for the program (Named: Key in the Cloud x64 1.1.2), and it has one folder, named 1.1.2, which in turn has 18 items. 2 of the 18 are folders. I've tried running the install by clicking the installer file(Dell Direct Key.msi), directly, but the same thing happened. I do see a "setup" file, but seems it does the same thing as the installer one. I haven't tried it all the way.

I'm beyond exasperated at the point and would greatly appreciate any help that can be offered.

In order of operation - I've got Dell Dimension E310 that came with a RAID 1 setup (two 160GB drives). Within 6 months the 'backup' drive began to have physical issues so I broke the raid and bought an external for backups - easier than dealing with Dell tech. The main system drive started showing signs of wear and it had to have clean installs several times over the years. Recently the blue screens got unbearable so I installed a new 250GB West. Dig. drive where the 'backup' drive was and installed XP on it. I've been using it successfully for about a year. I should have left well enough alone. I ended up with a Seagate 1 TB drive (due to a poor experience with Iomega Home Media Drive) that I was going to use to replace the original 'system' drive. I didn't realize the second XP install was still utilizing the boot info on the original drive to operate. When I switched them out, I received the "Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem" error, and realized that I had gone too far.

Since this happened, I've tried replacing the original hard drive, which resulted in access to the old, glitchy, version of XP I had on it, but when trying to access my most recent XP, I would receive the Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem error.
