BIOS/Firmware Messed up my Computer?

Q: BIOS/Firmware Messed up my Computer?

So my computer wasnt running the best so i figured maybe I should update my drivers. So I went to the Msi.com.tw website and got to the Live Update Online. I let it update and do what it had to and then I saw this BIOS/Firmware update or something like that so i deceided to do it. I didnt read the Important note posted on the page before i clicked "Yes I would like to try and my own risk" Button. heres what it states.

Important! In order to flash the BIOS/Firmware safely, please make sure to close all running applications in your system before flashing. (Including Outlook, ICQ, Anti-Virus application, etc…)

So Yea. I didnt read that. and After I let it do that and give me and error half way through I think. But anyways I had remebered I had left Norton antivirus on. So now whenever I go back to the Msi.com.tw site and click that try at own risk button.. it restarts my computer now. My fans have sped up and make more noises. not to mention it did ask me if i wanted to backup bios on a floppy. and well... when i Build this computer. I wasnt so smart about buying one of those to put in.. I forgot all about it. So no backup on floppy disc. Now My question for you is How do I fix this? Get a new PSU? I mean it sounds with my ears like it is just dieing after I did that. and I read somewheres it does something to your PSU and restarting. Or is there a alternative way to load my old bios back to normal? Please help. This is killing me. My mom bought me a new graphics card for Xmas and i wanna use it but not til my computers better.

A: BIOS/Firmware Messed up my Computer?

sounds like you may have corrupted the bios
http://www.wimsbios.com/faq/howtorecoveracorruptbios.jsp
few things to try
1) can you reload the bios again correctly
2) There may be a jumper on the motherboard to reset the bios
3) Remove the motherboard cmos battery and wait a few minutes - then refit

I have a Dell Latitude D630. It has an admin password for the bios. Nothing is locked except for the settings. I can't change any of the settings in the bios. It lets me boot to windows just fine though. My question is, since I don't know that admin password for the bios, if I upgrade the bios firmware, will the admin password be deleted? Since I'm flashing the bios, I would think that all the settings will be lost. Is that the case?

A:Will upgrading the bios firmware on a Latitude D630 delete the bios admin password?

What?

Didn't you reply here, and say it worked (after the unusual 9th try ) http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic109612-109.html#post747024

Awfully strange!

A bios update can't remove passwords. As You Must Know

Oh and thanks for the extended long Title. I'm thinking this Topic of yours would be best removed? What do you think?

I wasnt sure which forum this would go in but this one seems ok.

I just purchased some 16X memorex disks to use in my 16x burner. The burner is made by iomagic. http://www.iomagic.com/Products/show_all_results.asp?ProdID=idvd16dd

There is a sticker affixed to the front of the drive that tells me to go to this site for firmware upgrades. http://www.drvupdate.com/

I originally burned a disk in it just fine but I decided to upgrade the frimware. Now the drive will not read blank 16X disks. This is getting very annoying as I cannot downgrade the firmware. The drive reads all other disks but these. Can anyone help me out here, I got all these disks and no way to burn them.

Hi There,

I just built a desktop with a sabertooth x79 motherboard, and am running Windows 8.1 pro 64-bit. When I click the UEFI BIOS Firmware live tile via the change PC settings>update and recovery>recovery>etc. my computer reboots normally to Windows and will not open BIOS. I have tried accessing it using the delete and f2 keys, but this does nothing either.

Any ideas? I am up to date in terms of my BIOS, and am definitely running UEFI and not legacy.

Thank you so much.

Hi, Thanx to shuttles indescript site I have killed my AI61 motherboard, I thought I was getting an executable zip which was actually the flash program + rom and after opening BEEEEEP

Anyway I have a eeprom burner and this eeprom sst39sf020 is right in the list.

Can anyone email me the bios .bin file for this motherboard? (not the file from shuttles site but the old bios file ai61s017.bin so I can flash it using my eeprom burner)

Or at least tell me how to extract the .rom from the exe file shuttle sends

If I get the rom file I will be able to revive this nifty old 750!

PS it appears that shuttle quite sending *.bin bios updates a while ago but if anyone can find ai61s017.bin I would be gratefull

Hello Everyone, Before I share my recent experiences I would like to say I am not a Bleeping Computer Specialist and do not recommend trying this unless you are fully capable.

I have had 3 computers in my shop with rootkit activity detected by combofix. This is after the hard drive was low level formatted with LLF from HDDGuru and a clean load of windows. Some windows updates might need to be installed before the combofix detection. The computers were:

Dell Dimension 2400- http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic371370.html
Gigabyte motherboard- Intel P4, Award Bios
Asus motherboard- AMD Athlon X2, Pheonix Bios

On the first two, I was able to clear the rootkit detection by:

-unplug the machine
-Take out the CMOS Battery (Push power button to clear capacitors)
-Remove harddrive
-Install battery and plug machine in
-Flash the bios with a floppy (windows flash did not clear detection)
-LLF harddrive on other machine. (Remember to reboot after LLF)
I use the Apricorn DriveWire, (unplugged from usb on boot)
-Return harddrive to computer and Load windows from trusted disk.
****The rootkit detection has not returned on these computers****

On the Asus, after performing the above tasks. Combofix still detects a rootkit and wants to reboot. After clicking OK, The combofix window and all icons disappear. The mouse is still able to move, but after 15 minutes the computer still does not reboot. I power it down and reboot. Combofix runs but seems to detect nothing. ... Read more

A:Bios, Firmware Infection

Could Combofix have a false Detection?False detections are possible with any security tool to include ComboFix and that is one reason using it without proper supervision or guidance is not recommended. When issues arise due to complex malware infections, possible false detections, problems running ComboFix or with other security tools causing conflicts, experts are usually aware of them and can advise what should or should not be done while providing individual assistance. When false detections are identified experts have access to the developer and can report them so he can investigate, confirm and make corrections. Those attempting to use ComboFix on their own do not have such information and are at risk when running the tool in an unsupervised environment. Further, using ComboFix is only one part of the disinfection process. Preliminary scans from other tools like DDS, RSIT and GMER should be used first because they provide comprehensive logs with specific details about files, folders and registry keys which may have been modified by malware infection. Analysis of those logs allows planning an strategy for effective disinfection and a determination if using ComboFix is necessary. Please read the pinned topic ComboFix usage, Questions, Help? - Look here.

I upgraded the firmware of my Gateway M200ARC's Samsung SN-324F CD-RW/DVD-ROM combo, and the BIOS no longer can see the combo drive. My old firmware version was U200, and the Samsungood Web site had version U205 available (U205) which is what I upgraded to. Used the Samsung firmware update utility from their site. Any help to fix my problem is appreciated. Had sent an email for help to Samsung on this.

If I used the wrong firmware, if there a way to fix it or roll back to the old versoin? Thanks.

A:BIOS Cannot See CD-RW/DVD-ROM After Firmware Upgrade

If a BIOS flash goes bad (and unfortunately a significant % do) then it is often the end for the drive, (or motherboard when the PC BIOS is being flashed).

The golden rule is never to flash a BIOS unless you are correcting a known hardware compatability issue. It isn't a recreational activity.

The problem is that if the failed flash prevents the drive from appearing on the IDE BUS, then it cannot be accessed to reflash it back to the original version.

I have a DELL 660s which no longer boots after a failed windows 10 install. Unfortunately, it's just a few months out of warranty.
When I power the computer on the fan starts and I see a brief period of hard drive activity but the screen doesn't activate - just a blank, black screen. I don't even see the DELL logo and I'm unable to access BIOS.
I believe the BIOS firmware was corrupted by the failed Windows 10 install. I've tried removing the CMOS battery overnight but this didn't help. At this point I believe I need to flash stable firmware onto the BIOS chip, which is all the more difficult since the computer won't boot and I can't access BIOS.
Based on my research manufacturers of BIOS chips often include emergency recovery procedures to fix corrupted BIOS firmware. For example the manufactuer AMI includes an embedded "boot block" which can sometimes be used to boot from floppy / flash usb and install new firmware even when the existing BIOS firmware is corrupted. See: https://techjourney.net/recover-or-undo-corrupt-ami-bios-flash-update/
I'd like to try something like this but I don't know where to start. I guess the first thing I need to know is who is the manufacturer of the BIOS chip in my DELL 660s computer? Can anyone help me answer this question?
I found one vague reference on google that mentions AMI is the manufacturer but I'm not sure if the source is accur... Read more

A:Recover Corrupted BIOS Firmware

I wanted to add that I've downloaded the BIOS install file from Dell's website for the 660s. The filename is named "Inspiron 660s Vostro 270s A11 BIOS.exe".
I've read online that I may need to extract the rom or header file from this executable file but I've been unsuccessful in doing that. The example I've seen say to run the executable file from the command line with the /writeromfile or /writehdrfile flags.
When I try this nothing happens except that I receive an error message stating this is not a DELL computer (I'm running the executable file from my HP laptop).

Hi Everyone,

I have been battling a virus for quite some time, it has infected every PC I own (11) and I cannot for the life of me remove it. I am passed the polnt of recovering personal data, I would just like access to my computers and use them without being monitored. I believe that this is an above normal grade rootkit that cannot be removed by simple measures and I am at a loss of what to try next. I have spent hundreds of hours trying to get this removed and still it remains. I will save you from an ehaustive explanation of how I came to my conclusions and try to keep this brief as not to waste your time or send you down the wrong path. I think I am dealing with a persistant multi-payload rootkit that hypervises my PC's. One would think this would only affect one PC due to hardware limitations but this is not the case. Here is what I have attempted in order to remove the virus.

Last resorts:
(anything imaginable in windows)
-Removed CMOS/RAM/Power allowed to sit a week (was traveling for work)
-Flashed BIOS (ROG flashback button, fresh USB, CAB file loaded by clean PC)
-Replaced RAM (new ram)
-Replaced HD (new HD)
-All other drives removed
-Installed windows from new DVD drive using OEM WIN 8 DVD (offline)
-Installed with Secure Boot/TPM/NX enabled

Diagnostics:
-Dumped memory
-GMER detects kernel modification
-Dumped ROM/BIN from BIOS
-Examined BIOS (RWPortable)
-Hirens BCD (every tool possible)
-Ubuntu (clamAV)
-Network sniffing/capture

Is there really no recovery procedure ? Please ?

A:Z820 Bricked Bios after Firmware update

Hi: If you run the BIOS file again (on another PC), the intruction page opens and you can try this...I'd burn the DOS based flash files on a CD, since the DVD drive may be looking for a CD to recover from, but according to the instructions below, you can use a USB flash drive (formatted in the FTA 32 files system, not NTFS). Just put the files inside the folder on the CD, not the folder. Fail-safe BootBlock Recovery ModeHP Workstations include 64 KB of write-protected boot block ROM that provides a way to recover from a failed update of the system BIOS ROM, for instance in the event of a power loss. Fail-safe BootBlock Recovery Mode will detect that the BIOS is unusable and boot the workstation in a recovery mode and search the root folder of any FAT/FAT32 file system on any USB media source (hard drive, flash drive, etc.) for a compatible binary image. The binary (.bin) file in the DOS Flash folder should be copied to the root of the desired storage device, and the system powered on. Once the binary image is located, the BIOS recovery process will be attempted. The automatic recovery will continue until the BIOS is successfully updated or restored.

I want to updgrade from Win 7 to Win 10.I'm advised it's prudent to upgrade the BIOS/Firmware before doing so.I tried using MEInfoWin but all I got were error codes. Further investigation in the bios shows ME Firmware Version and ME Management Mode as being Disabled. How do I re-enable them?I assume I need to move a jumper on the motherboard (PCB Rev 1:03)?Is it the one adjacent to CPU0-DIMM1 and what is the procedure?Any advice gratefully recieved.

A:Z820 ME Firmware & Management is Disabled in BIOS

Try this to upgrade the ME firmware on a Z820: As you noticed, there is a 3 pin header E1 located near the edge of the motherboard, between CPU0-DIMM1 and the power connector P3. - Power down the Z820 first. Then move the jumper on E1 to pins 1 and 2. (pin 3 is closest to the CPU DIMM connector) The jumper on pins 1-2 enables flashing the ME firmware. - After moving the jumper, then power up the system. Note: The system only reads the position of this jumper on power up (maybe reset?), so don't move it while the system is running. - Now try to flash the ME firmware. - If the ME flash worked, then power down the system. Move the jumper on E1 to pins 2 and 3. This enables ME. (Note: ME is disabled with the jumper on pins 1-2) - After powering up the system after flashing and moving the jumper, the system may power down and up and reboot a few times. This is normal. I am not an expert on ME firmware, but I am fairly certain this will help. E1 is highlighted in yellow below, pin 1 is on the left.

Read the entire referenced webpage below. Apparently, the problem is in the BIOS or HDD firmware, and also affects Windows and Mac platforms (especially laptops) as well as Linux despite the problem being reported against Fiesty and Gutsy Ubuntu:

Article Explanation of Ubuntu Hard Drive Wear and Tear.

Ubuntu doesn't touch your hard drive power management settings by default. In almost all cases, it's more likely to be your BIOS or the firmware on your hard drive.

There are two fixes documented: choose wisely after reading the entire article as there is a trade-off between laptop battery life vs HDD life. I would choose in favor of the solution that extends the HDD life at the expense of battery life. Just my $0.02 worth of advice.

I ran into an issue recently with 3 Dell E5570 with I7 6600U CPU and dedicated graphics card. The entire system stops responding randomly and gets worse after some time. The fix I found was to update the Bios firmware from dells drivers website. Released Jan 29th. When attempting to upgrade the bios, 1 of the processes will fail. A second update to the bios firmware will complete one of the steps needed to update all areas of the bios. So update the bios twice, back to back. After this attempt to boot into windows. It will likely still not work. What I found was to shut down, unplug the power cord, then wait 30 seconds, then plug back in. This should restore the OS to working condition. This happened to me on 2 brand new machines.
I attached some pictures that will show the weird issues that were occurring. If you have similar issues, then its likely the bios. You will need another machine to download the bios exe file onto a flash drive. Insert flash drive, then when you boot up the computer and see the dell logo, push delete a few times until you see the text on the upper right, then push f12 several times until you get in. Then go to bios firmware update. Select browse, then click on the bios exe file you downloaded. Takes a few minutes to install the firmware that will fail to complete the first time. DO NOT SHUT OFF THE COMPUTER DURING BIOS UPDATE PROCESS!!!!
Btw, these machines were only a few hours old when this started. Track pad would not respond properly, random win... Read more

I'm writing an installer application (in c++), and as part of that application, I would like to reboot the PC firmware (BIOS/UEFI) setup/configuration screen.
Anyone know anything that might work, or any place I could look for this information???
NOTE: Windows 10 has a UI that does this, and I have seen it done from other installers, so I know it's possible.

Whats my problem? What are possible solutions? Whats the easiest solution?

Hi everyone,

I'm wondering if anyone can help me to set up my bios. I've 'tweaked' this, and ticked that, and now the pc just starts up, runs for a few seconds, and shuts down. I really don't know what to do.

Thanks,

My BIOS is messed up really bad.

It is a Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop. On the security settings:
Supervisor password: Clear
User password: Clear
HDD password: Frozen

I tried to run a few BIOS freeware clear programs, and I have tried to remove the battery and press the power button for 30 seconds to try to force reset the BIOS back to defaults, but still no luck. I cannot boot to windows normally or into safe mode in anyway without it rebooting non-stop on the test screen.
i am currently using Mini Windows XP on the same laptop that is having this issue off the CD Hirren's Boot CD.
It is able to boot from a disk, or USB, but the not he hard drive.
Please respond to this ASAP with ideas on how to fix this issue or email me at:

Thanks in advance,
Jon

Recently, my computer was running poorly and i had never updated my bios so i tried and i believe i messed up somehow. Sometimes it will start and other times it won't, sometimes it will start in safe mode and other times it won't. I have Biostar motherboard and an Intel chipset E2200. I have been to the website and tried to fix things but i'm not real sure where to start. Nothing i do seems to help and i am at wits end. I don't mind re-installing and starting over if i could reformat the hard drive i would do that and start over. Need help, thanks for anything.

Eeeek!!! I was clearing out some old files and I have accidently run (from within XP) a BIOS flash utility for my old AOpen AX6BC mobo. MY current mobo is an MSI K8N Neo2. From what I can recall, the utility perfoms the BIOS flash the next time that the PC is rebooted. The file is called ax6bc110.exe. I have tried to delete the file both from Windows and from a Dos box, but I am being told that the file is in use. I have looked in Task Manager but I cannot find an entry that relates to this file.

Any help would be great (once you've stopped laughing!). I shall be leaving my PC on until I get this sorted!!

Thanks,
Darren

Hi,
I would really appreciate some help/advice with the following, as I`m pretty much at my wits end:
I attempted to install a second harddrive into my pc, something which I`ve done before in other pcs without too much trouble. After swapping the order of the four drives (two hdds, plus a cdrom and a cdrw) around till they all were seen by windows, and in the order that I wanted, I turned the pc off (cant quite remember why, it was over a week ago), went and ate. When I switched it back on it wouldn`t boot, so I got the cmos screen up, and checked that everything looked as it should. It did, so I tried booting again, and it would hang each time, the only way I could get out of the hang was to pull the plug out. So I did this maybe a dozen times, then had the "bright" idea of resetting the cmos jumper on the mobo. Nothing drastic happened, good or bad, so I reset the clock/date made sure the hdd settings were set to "auto", and then exited. It hung again, so I pulled the plug, and then Nothing. The fan comes on, and the light, but that`s it. I have an AOC monitor that turns itself off onto standby mode if it dosn`t get a signal, which is what happens when I plug it in now. I`ve tried disconnecting all drives and just running it with ram, and graphics (it`s onboard, not a seperate card), but still the monitor switches to standby, giving a "no signal or cable disconnected" message first. There`s no beeps, no floppy boot if I connect the floppy. Jus... Read more

A:Bios/ Mobo messed up, need help please

hmmm... you should get SOMETHING with just the CPU plugged in... even with the memory pulled out.

Your system might have died, and sticking in RAM into it might have damaged your "old" memory... speculating. I or anyone else wasn't there... and don't know anything about your hardware.

Try only this when powered up: CPU ONLY. no drive cables getting power or data to the board. Just the CPU, not even the memory - you should still get POST, if its still alive. (also, reset CMOS again too. unplug power - change cmos jumper for a few seconds then back to normal, replug power cord, press power button).

A:Solved: Messed up bios

It appears from another of your posts this is a Pavilion G6? To access the BIOS Setup, turn on the computer and repeatedly press the ESC key to enter the Startup Menu, and then press the F10 key to enter the BIOS setup utility. Chose the System Configuration tab where the boot order is set. Boot first from USB and second from the hard drive, save the changes.

Greets,

I just recently changed something with my bios and now my comp doesn't boot up at all. Not getting any power to the keyboard anymore, the monitor doesn't display ANYTHING, no post tests or anything. I'm a complete newb when it comes to tweaking bios so I probably shouldn't have been messing with anything there in the first place, but I guess that's obvious now. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:Messed with my bios and now it won't boot, no post...

If you have the motherboard or computer instruction manual, find out how to reset the BIOS by using the jumper on the motherboard. If you can't find that, unplug the computer then remove the battery from the motherboard and replace it after five minutes. :grinthumb

I do not have recovery disks for this computer so I Tried recovery disks from my other computer which is an T2692 E Machine running XP. It got me a screen but I could not re-install win XP. I finally managed to reformat C: and installed an old copy of Win98 but not working properly. Still can not install my XP - get the following error "Micro Tech Error 3E6H setup can not continue". Win 98 is not working correctly. The first screen I see that shows Windows 98 is completely black on top half of screen but bottom is correct. It then does go to the desktop with icons but If I go to control panel and system it gives me error to shut down.
I may have screwed up the bios also as I kept trying different things. Is there somewhere I can look and make sure all the bios settings are where they should be.

Have I messed up too badly or can all my problems be corrected? i would appreciate any help, I have been working on for two days with not much luck.

You can Reset your Bios to all Default Settings using the Jumpers on the Main Circut Board.

Usually JBat 1 Jumpers but check your manual.Otherwise take out the battery for 15-20Mins and Reinsert.

Make sure you have the power completely disconnected from the mainboard.
Take out the Power Lead from the Power Supply Unit.
Make sure you earth youeself first before touching componants inside the Box....keep touching the metal on the PC Box.

Hi all, yesterday I tried to update my Dell XPS12 (9Q33 mid 2013) BIOS to the last version (A08). During the installation, the laptop remained stuck in "EC programming" at 50%..I waited two hours but nothing changed and my PC was unusable: completely blocked, no keyboard,no touch and even the windows clock was blocked.
So, as I read in a lot of BIOS-related threads, I removed the AC adaptor and let it discharge completely..some users resolved with this workaround, and their PC's worked well after.
Unfortunately, my XPS12 doesn't want to power up anymore..I also tried to put the .hdr file of the BIOS in a USB stick and tried to power up with "end" button pressed. It powers up and the fans are working, but nothing happens then..Am I using the wrong procedure to repair the BIOS?

Thanks in advance,

Fabio

A:Dell XPS12 messed up during BIOS update

Good day ,
To help me resolve this issue I would ask your assistance by performing these troubleshooting steps,
1)Remove all the peripheral components from the system .2)Disconnect the charger from the system ,battery from the system and perform the power drain test on the system .
3)Plug in the charger back and use F2 key to get into BIOS then use F9 key to reset the BIOS to default settings.
4)If you are unable to get to the BIOS page or if there are any concerns do reply to this post with the service tag of the system (sent via private message ) so that I can look into the specifications of the system to assist you better .
Awaiting your reply .
Have a great day ahead !

Strange issue. Trying to fix a boot-up issue. After a good cleaning, the Dell Laptop would still boot up to DELL logo 60% of the time. Checked boot priority in System Setup and #1 was set to Windows Boot Manager. Changed the order to OS, and it booted. After sitting for a while, the DELL logo would appear again, no waking it, hard reset, checked the settings, and Windows Boot Manager was back to #1.

After messing with it, did a RESET. Same issue is happening. DELL logo stuck at loading. Keep having to change boot order to get it to boot. Yes, I save options before exiting. Restored default settings in bios. hmmmmm. Do a clean install?? And what is the correct boot order anyway?

A:After RESET, Boot priority still messed up in BIOS

The PC does boot to windows boot manager...

But if you keep have issues - do a clean install and then install facory dell drivers..

A friend of mine was no longer able to get into Windows XP on her PC and wanted to save a lot of digital photos. So I took her PC, removed her HD and swapped it with my secondary HD. (My PC has a primary SATA drive w/ the OS and a secondary IDE drive for storage). When I turned on my PC, for some reason it booted off of her drive I had swapped in. I wanted to get online to do some troubleshooting so I removed her HD and put mine back in. That is when the "strike f1 to retry reboot, strike f2 to enter setup" error message starting occurring. I have reset my BIOS and cleared NVRAM. I believe I did this correctly because each time afterwards it would attempt the automatic IDE configuration. Anyways, the BIOS is not recognizing ANY of my drives (2 dvd drives, the primary sata HD, and the secondary IDE HD).

Any help would be much appreciated, thank you!

A:Dell WD15 Desktop Dock - Step-by-step driver/firmware/BIOS installation instructions for XPS, Latitude and Precision notebooks [UPDATED 04-22-16]

Hi Brian
Thanks for being active on this issue. (This thread was closed - so had to use the TB-15 Thunderbolt thread above this one). Thanks for opening this one for WD-15
I've been having most of the problems mentioned in the other Thunderbolt dock thread .. USB problems, fan noise, not recognising on startup,
I tried the driver list above (for 5510 win7 64) and some refused to install because they were for xps product not precision. However I when on 5520 support page (for the nth time) and found a new USB driver. ie > Chipset_Driver_V2WY5_WN32_1.16.32.1_A01.EXE
I've installed that but NOPE ... still has USB problems eg stuff like usb (2) keyboard not working. BUT unplug/replug the dock at USB C connection at laptop and it works !! (but this is a PITA and probably will wreck the socket in the long run).
I guess my point is please sync the support page and this support forum if you can, we all love Dell but would appreciate some reciprocating :-)

After installing the lastest firmware update via Linux usb tools to my SDD (Vertex 3 Max IOPS) problems with freezing seem to still persist.

The only difference is that, instead of having the rotating blue wheel (the thing that tells you something is loading) and windows explorer going white (meaning it's stopped responding) - the system simply totally freezes. Not even mouse movement works anymore when it happens. No error messages, no BSOD, nothing. It just totally stops.

What else could my problem be? I'm using a new user account since it seems to buy more time before a freeze happens by doing so (since it has less things to load I'll guess).

Here are my specs :

Computer type : Origin EON17-S (Clevo P170HMx) (Laptop)

Purchase Date : August 2011

Windows 7 Ultimate x64

Overclocked Intel Core i7 Extreme 2920XM (Sandy Bridge) 4.1 - 4.8Ghz (though it reads as 2.5Ghz on most things...) [Intel? HM67 Express Chipset Family]

16GB Dual Channel Kingston Hyper-X DDR3 SDRAM @ 1600Mhz

Overclocked NVIDIA 580M GTX (Driver 301.42)

OCZ Vertex 3 Max IOPS SSD (OCZ-VERTEX3 MI) (Updated firmware to v2.22)

Edit : I'm currently looking through for updates to other hardware on my system.

A:Firmware update did not completely repair my computer.

The very first thing you should do is set everything back to stock speeds. You are lucky that the firmware flash went through successfully. Set everything to stock speeds and see how that runs.

I've let my family use this computer for awhile, they started to complain it was "acting weird." When I jumped on to see, I noticed it was shutting down by itself and extremely slow. I got the computer to start up and tried to do a couple system restores. I then noticed then that the date/time on the computer was off. Saying some of the restore points were back in 2006, when I didn't even have this computer. After a couple failed attempts, I got the computer to restore. Its not randomly shutting off anymore but is still slower than it should be. I reseted the date and time, but I'm still worried something could be wrong. This computer has had a Root Kit, and a MBR infection before.I've run disk clean up, Spybot, AVG and CC cleaner. So a few days ago, I had the smart idea to update my Bios. I had brought up System Information and saw I hadn't updated the Bios since 2011 (it's an older computer), so I downloaded the 2013 Bios, and ran the windows installer. Everyone seemed to run fine.

But afterwards, the computer would restart at the Bios screen multiple times. Given enough time, it would sometimes get past the Bios screen and load Windows.

I tried pressing F2 to bring up the Bios menu, but it would restart before the menu popped up. After probably 4-6 resets, I could bring up the Bios menu.

I tried using an USB with the 2013 Bios on it to install it again, but it didn't fix anything.

I've heard of different things, like pulling out and putting back in (reseating) the CMOS battery to reset the Bios to the original version. I haven't tried that yet because I wanted to see if there were any other options.

Thank you for your time.

A:Computer Restarts at BIOS, often can't even bring up BIOS menu

I am not aware that reseating the CMOS battery will cause the BIOS to revert to the original version. Nevertheless, have you tried re-flashing the 2013 version again? If that doesn't solve the problem, maybe you could try flashing the 2011 version?

my computer isnt bad, but about two years ago i was trying to watch a movie on it and it said i needed to change from true color to high color or something along those line, and i did, and ever since on all websites i havent been able to see borders and what not. for example on msn.com i cant see the blue or w/e color it is, i see the words and boxs, the adds are in color, but everywhere else is white. please help! i never minded until now because i never had any reason too, but now i have a website and i cant even see anything except the top image! its really pissing me off and ive tried everything in the book to fix it, i changed the high color and true color back and forth many times, i did a whole non invasive/destructive system restore, i have done SOOOOOOOO many things, but i cant fix it, all i want to know now is how to set all my display settings to default without reinstalling windows xp, or if you know how to fix it. please help me

A:Help! my computer is messed up!

Take a look at the appearance tab of the display properties under “Color scheme”. Schemes like “high contrast white” can give some pretty odd displays. I would disable any themes and desktops. Maybe start with a standard “windows classic style” windows and buttons as well as color scheme.

Make sure Windows and IE are updated with M$.

Clean out your IE temp files and set IE to dump them when you close IE.

Well normally you would see a HJT log here. My friends laptop is very messed up. It had some crazy spyware on it. I tried to install spybot s&d but it wont open once i install and I can't get avg to install (pretty sure its not a virus). While installing it asks to close certain webpages and nothing is even open.

I was able to run ad-aware-se from hirens boot cd 9.6 tools. I wasnt able to update the defn (9/27/08 was what they were) I am trying to run trend micro scan. I tried to install HJT but no real luck. Put on firefox cause IE wouldnt let me do anything. Let me know what I need to do so inform you about the laptop's status.

My friends son thought that he could fix his computer and he totally messed it up. He reinstalled windows 7 and now he has a memory problem now. Drive C is completely used up. 1.59 MB free of 131GB. It is now the recovery partition. D drive has 61.6 Gb free of 122 GB. Can boot into 7 dvd to reformat the hard drive The dvd drive keeps telling him to load a disk. Dvd will not run to reformat. He also gets a warning of low disk space. Disk Cleanup states that c;| has only 0 MB of free disk space to prevent information loss and performance problems, you need to free up disk space. Unable to do that.

What to do to reformat hard drive and reinstall op. system. The only thing on this computer is the op system. No files, all is gone.

Please help.

A:Messed up computer

An option other than reformatting the hard disk and re-partitioning it, would be to attempt a factory reset via the recovery partition, or recovery disks that you made (or didn't make, but can usually be purchased from the computer manufacturer). In theory, if the recovery works, the computer will be reset to the condition in which it shipped from the manufacturer. That is the route that I would recommend.

Hope this helps. Have a great day.

Regards,
-Phil

Welcome to TSF.

What kind of problems is AVG finding and where are these located? Are you having any problems on the computer or just worried because AVG has detected something?

1. Download combofix at http://www.techsupportforum.com/sect...s/ComboFix.exe or http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
2. Double-click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply.

Note:
Do not click on combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Please use the latest version of HijackThis here and run a scan using that. Post a new log here.

Hey guys,

I am beyond the point of despair now. Let me explain what happened:

Just several hours ago my AVG detected ardamax keylogger. I quarantined this keylogger and rebooted my computer.

Upon start up, my computer no longer works. If I open internet explorer for the internet, I see my homepage. If I try to go to another other site or links, a new window opens up. This new window is just a blank white page with nothing in it and freezes until I ctrl+alt+del. But even then the task manager shows no applications.

Nothing will run, not word documents or any programs (They all respond in the same way by opening up a new blank window and freezing). Basically I’m reduced to waving my mouse on the desktop and clicking on icons which then freeze up on starting the application.

I can’t download any windows updates because explorer won’t work, or any anti virus programs to remove ardamax. Even cds and USBs can’t be opened.

I have tried a system restore, but always end up with ‘this restore was unsuccessful’.

I can’t even start in safemode, when I F8 from reboot, it simply takes me back to normal windows mode.

I have also noticed that the icon for internet explorer is a ‘file unknown’ icon instead of the blue ‘e’ (A minor detail but I thought it prudent to add in).

If anyone can share similar experiences and how they solved it, or any technical advice it would be much appreciated. I have so much college work saved on this computer and I absolutely can’t ... Read more

Hi, so I have tried to run dds and gmer on my infected computer but it doesn't allow it. A small black window pops up, but then goes away and gmer does not even pop up, so I'm not sure how to run those scans. By the way, I am asking for help on a different computer because I basically cannot use the infected one. I transfered the dds and gmer from a different computer with a flash drive. I also cannot drag these files to the desktop (there are no icons on my desktop): I had to try to open dds and gmer while it was on my USB flash drive.

Information about my computer: the whole screen is gray with no icons, many popups when turning on computer doing scans that I think are fake. Very disfunctional. Help is appreciated.

Hello and welcome to TSF.

Please download and run the following tool to help allow the scanning tools to run. (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com)
There are 4 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
Vista and Win7 users need to right click and choose Run as Admin
You only need to get one of them to run, not all of them.

http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/rkill.exe
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/rkill.com
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/rkill.scr
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/rkill.pif

Note:

You will likely see a message from this rogue telling you the file is infected. Ignore the message. Leave the message OPEN, do not close the message. Run rkill repeatedly until it's able to do it's job. This may take a few tries. You'll be able to tell rkill has done it's job when your desktop (explorer.exe) cycles off and then on again.

At this point, you should now be able to run analysis tools.

Once the tool has run, do NOT reboot the machine, and then try once again to run DDS and GMER tools from our First Steps, and post their logs in a new thread as this one shall be closed to put you back in the queue.

If for some reason the machine reboots, repeat the process. Again, try not to restart the machine.

Hello everyone, I am having more problems with my computer again. I already had hijack this and posted once a few months ago and am again having problems. If I could post my hijack this log file and have someone help me with which things I need to delete, that would be nice of you. Also, my computer is doing this weird thing were the desktop is not there, just the wallpaper, and the mouse is always on the hourglass pointer until I put it over a something. The only way I can get programs open is through task manager, which is a pain in the butt. I can still use my computer, but the desktop is not there. But sometimes, when I reboot, it is there, but my computer runs slower for some reason then when the desktop is not there, go figure. Help with any of this is greatly appreciated. A:My computer is messed up again!!!

Hello jollygreen68,

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad since you will not have any of browsers open while you are fixing this.. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. Again, you should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. If you have Windows XP, the search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if main link doesn't work) and install it. Do not run it yet.

Run an online scan at Trend Micro or RAV Antivirus.
Please select the ?autoclean? option when using Trend Micro.

Reboot your system in Safe Mode (By repeatedly tapping the F8 key until the menu appears).

Go into Hijack This->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click ?Kill process? for... Read more

I can't launch anything and my files are gone. Popups come up and just weird stuff happens. Heres more detail:I was surfing the web and then BAM! ...AVG went haywire with trojans and nt.dll stuff popping up. It was like my PC exploded. I restarted and disconnected from the internet. I got a black screen with just a blinking white line at top left corner. I read to run repair and fixmbr. That worked but when I got into windows, It's looks like a fresh install of windows with the look of it and wallpaper. Files will not execute and theres some weird looking things on it and all my files are GONE. I go into safe mode and things look more normal. My desktop icons are back and my files are back. A:Computer is messed up. Need Help

I ran the DDS and GMER in normal mode. Heres the thing, this is the first time i booted up my computer the past 6 days and it actually booted up normally and has all my files and stuff back. Very strange. So I was able to easily get the DDS and GMER. I know this thing must have a bunch of viruses, trojans, etc. though after that AVG craziness. AVG also seems to be gone as well. I'm not gonna fool around with it though. Thanks for the help Andrew.

My Windows XP computer has several issues:

1. I have no Start button or taskbar.

2. I cannot download anything.

3. I cannot use my Malwarebytes Anti- Malware, there is an error whenever I try to open it.

4. My computer plays no sound.

5. I cannot access the RPC server. After I log on, I get the error message of

"System Error &H800706BA (-2147023174). The RPC server is unavailable."

Whenever I run services.msc and try to start it from there, I get the message:

"Could not start the Remote Procedure Call RPC service on Local Computer.

Please help, anyone. This is way out of my league.

Ok, let me try to explain.. I am working on my friends mother-in-law's computer.. she started having issues with AVG (free) not running correct) as well as Internet Explorer 7 not letting her type into user fields (i.e. login etc..)

I first did a hijackthis scan and went to Help2go to check the scan and it only shows 2 items to remove (I removed them)

I also downloaded SuperAntispyware (free) and ran a scan, all it found were cookies...

I downloaded the AVG cleaner from the AVG site and ran it in safemode to be sure all old files/reg entries etc.. were removed.

I tried to re-install AVG (8.5) and it still does not run (not even in safe mode) I get the error "this application failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect, reinstalling the application may fix this problem." (yeah right!)

I again removed the program, and looked a bit further into what might have caused this.. I then thought maybe IE7 had something to do with it.. and uninstalled it.. I also was thinking maybe Service pack 3 might be courpt, so I went to add/remove programs and tried to uninstall SP3, as it was in the middle of un-installing the computer froze! I restarted, and SP3 was still there... I tried to uninstall again and get errors! so now I think SP3 might be even more messed up.. then I thought maybe restore to a real old date (I wish I tried this originally) but the restore program (even in safe mode) just shows a blank white page! not sure if it has anything ... hello again! Now it's time to fix up my father-in-law's computer. I've been maintaining it every few months for the last few years, it gets infected frequently, slows down tremendously but he won't buy a new computer. So far I've been fine with AVG, MBAM etc, but this weekend, I updated the computer at Windows Update, and got it all updated, even SP3. But now it's even worse. OK... as wandering the internet randomly my computer told me the windows explorer had to stop. An error message was sent, and windows frooze on me. While trying to restart the computer it would get half way through the loading windows xp screen and the computer would restart itself. I ask the windows xp cd to repair this problem and it reinstalled windows(sp1.) Now several things have happened.

The speakers don't work anymore

Whenever I try to get into something like access/defaults or 'my computer' properties it gives me a "this operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator" message

a pop up stating "Warning!potential spyware operation!
your computer is making unauthoired copies of youre system and internet files." Keeps recurring at random times.

Since windows reinstalled itself internet explorer has reverted back to the last verison and displays "http://xtoff/" in the address bar. I can still access other sites.... odviously

While trying to upgrade to sp2 hoping it would help, the microsoft website can not be found, and I am pretty sure it has not been down for 2 days.

I am running on windows xp

I recently upgraded to xp sp3 and turned off my computer. However the next day when I turned it on I got a message from msn saying there was an error installing then ea manager came up saying there was an outdated flash player so in ie I go upgrade and I cant download and install. I then go in firefox download it open it and it installs. I restart and everythign is happening again. I can't watch youtube videos or anything. Please help me.
Thanks

Also I would like to know since I just found out that sp3 isn't very good is there a way I can downgrade to sp2 again?
Thanks

A:Sp3 messed up my computer.

SP3 is not much beyond a collection of post SP2 updates. If it is causing problems for you it is probably really because of a firewall or corruption or some such on your machine. OTOH if it is causing trouble you can use Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs to remove it.

Now it won't reach the main desktop, the loading screen come up and the after that a screen says "autochk program not found - skipping AUTOCHECK" once that screen comes up the system restarts and continues to do it. I tried the "last known config" and still the same problem. I also tried starting in safe mode but the same thing happens.....restart after loading screen. I started it up again with the "no restart on system failure" and the same thing but then the blue screen comes up and reads "STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error} The session manager intialization system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xc000003a (0x000000000 0x000000000). The system has been shut down." I have no idea what to do please someone help!!!! I have Windows Xp Pro

Ok. Somehow, probably through limewire or something, I got something that is making my desktop icon text background not transparent anymore and also I get random adult popups all the time even when Im not surfing the internet.
