For the past 2 days, I get an Automatic Update notice for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 service pack 2. I click on 'Download' and the icon goes away and nothing happens.
Today it happened again and this time it downloaded and installed. Then 10 minutes later I get an Update notice for the same thing! I unchecked it and closed it. But the icon stays in my system tray.
What's causing this? It has happened in the past.

After repeated problems with the update failing I did a clean install and installed kb3200970 manually from the windows catalogue and it shows as an installed update. Windows automatic updates wants to download and install it again. Is this really necessary? Any way to make it stop???More replies
So my HDD was crapping out, so I used my second HDD as my primary. Now when i try to do windows update. It gets stuck at 0, and it goes back into the installation window. It even says "Items successfully installed" yet after like 10seconds of downloading. I do not understand what's happening. I hooked up my modem right to the comp so it wouldn't go through the router it i managed to install 5 things but after that it keeps doing it again.
I think the windows files itself are being weird, i tried to download Skype and it said "cannot install because windows management something" is not turned on. I have never had that problem before. It's so strange.2 more replies
Firstly thanks for your help.
I have a problem with windows update kb3045999. It has caused a lot of problems on my system, with programs not loaded after booting (eg notepad, IE etc return error code The application was unable to start (0xc0000018). I understand that this is a known error and many have posted about it online. I can reboot my computer a number of times and eventually the programmes will work as normal, however that is a bit of a pain.
From reading online it appears the way to fix the problem is to uninstall the update. I thought I had done that but the error kept happening. I then had the idea of reinstalling the update and uninstalling again in-case it did not uninstall correctly, however when I try to install the update it advises me that it is already installed and when I try to uninstall it using the wusa /uninstall command I am advised that the update is not installed.
Any ideas on what to do?

So I have been trying to work through my Windows Update issues, turns out it was majorly broken. I think I have it mostly working now. My issue I am having is down to one specific update that I downloaded a separate installer for. It failed partway through installation and now I am completely stuck.
I am trying to get KB3033929 installed, it is required for me to install Oculus software. Oculus installer says I do not have the hotfix and will not install. Running the Microsoft WUSA installer says KB3033929 is already installed and cannot be installed. Running the command-line 'wusa /uninstall "package_path"' says that the update is not installed so it can't be uninstalled. Running the command-line 'wusa /install "package_path"' says that the update *is* installed already.
So it is clearly stuck in some indeterminate state where it is simultaneously installed and not installed and I am going to have to do some manual cleaning I assume. I am comfortable manually editing whatever I have to do, I just don't know where or how to fix this. I haven't been able to find anything with this specific problem. Anyone have any ideas how to proceed short of an industrial sized shredder?
when i turn my laptop on, it tries to configure the update but only gets to 85% and then shuts itself down for some reason.
i've tried the repair your computer and several different restore points but get a message saying the restore failed everytime.
i've also tried safe mode, safe mode with command prompt, and last known good configuration, but none has worked.

I am running on a machine running Windows 7 Home Premium x64. Other Windows Updates are working fine, but for some reason, the Windows Update for IE9 keeps appearing (and failing) even though IE9 is already installed. The update for IE10 (as well as the manual installer) also fail.
The "Windows Internet Explorer 9 for Windows 7 for x64-based systems" fails with error code 9C48.
The "Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 7 for x64-based systems" fails with error code 9C59.
I've attached the CBS folder with the CBS and CheckSUR files (I had to remove some of the older "persist" files to fit it under the attachment limit).

So, I don't really know any details of what malware I may have on my computer other than its symptoms and the likelihood that it came through utorrent (which has since been taken off the computer). Basically, the problem began manifesting itself with the BSOD in Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit. I think I have taken care of that problem. The remaining symptoms of the malware are that windows and windows defender cannot update itself. Also, I cannot download any type of anti-virus update software or even the programs themselves. The updates just say they were unsuccessful. When I attempt to do a manual install/update of anti-virus or windows updates I get a "cannot connect to webpage". Sometimes, I will be redirected from an anti-virus download site to a random unaffiliated site. When I attempt to run a free online virus scan, the update will not work and therefore there is no ability to scan.
Thanks for whatever help you can offer. Eric

A few days ago I updated my system to Win Anniv 1607 using an ISO disc. Today I have the same? update showing up in my Update Status. It is KB3176929. I selected defer updates for now, but why does this show up? I don't want to do this again because I had to do a clean boot to get it to work before and it screwed up some of my files. I saw some update fixes online, but I don't want to roll this back or affect my current system.More replies
You all were a tremendous help to me in getting rid of a particularly nasty piece of spyware a few years ago. I hope you'll be able to help me again.
I've searched the forums to see if my problem has already been addressed, but I've been unable to find anything. I hope I'm posting this in the right place.
I run WinXP Home SP2. I keep Windows Update set to notify me when updates are available, but not to install them.
Well, the other night, my firewall sprang to life and told me Windows Update was trying to access the Internet. I denied it permission.
The next thing I knew, a box popped up that said SP3 had been downloaded and that a reboot was necessary to complete installation. It asked if I wanted to reboot then or later. I clicked later, because I'm definitely not interested in SP3. I've heard too many bad things about it.
When I checked my Windows Update setting, I found that it had been changed to download updates automatically. I hadn't touched it, and I'm the only one who uses this computer.
I then went scrambling around looking for help. I found a Microsoft Knowledge Base article that said to disable reboot via the registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE-->Software-->Microsoft-->Windows-->CurrentVersion-->WindowsUpdate-->AutoUpdate, delete Reboot key. (It might have been the AutoReboot key -- I don't exactly remember -- if was after 3am when all of this started and I was very tired.) Anyway, that's what I did.... Read more
When SP3 first came out in May there was a problem related to computers that had certain AMD processors. They have resolved this issue and I haven't seen any problems related to this quirk since then. I have a AMD CPU and SP3, and I haven't had any problems with it at all. I would go ahead and let it install, there are some advantages to the SP3 that make it worth while.12 more replies
I recently had my hard drive replaced under warrantly and the dealer re-installed WXP Professional along with my printer and scanner drivers. I have been attempting to download AdAware SE Personal and SpyBot Search and destroy however, I have been unsuccessful in that the download cuts short and doesn't download the entire file.
SpyBot, was an 18.8 MB file and when the download started the window indicated it would take about 1 1/2 hours on my dial up connection. It downloaded in 7 minutes and the file was only about 328 KB. The same occurred with AdAware SE Personal.
Is there something in Windows settings that needs to be checked/unchecked so an entire file will download?
Can I use another computer and download the fie, copy it to a thumb/flash drive and then transfer the file to a folder on the computer that won't download and then execute the file? Thanks for your replies.
To save yourself a LOT of aggravation, go ahead and take your own excellent advice; DL those files on another computer, then use a USB flash drive to move copies to the computer that is having problems staying connected to the 'net.

I installed a PDF metadata editor from the formerly respectable site Download.com (CNET).
Turns out they joined the DARK side:
Despite me DECLINING all dodgy offers by the installer, it STILL installed a bunch of unwanted junk on my machine.
I've now spent an hour on and off trying to get rid of this junk. Just as I thought I was more or less done, I get an "Alert" frrom the "Microsoft Advanced System Protector" (yeah, right...)
I have of course checked in Add/Remove programs and uninstalled what I could find (although the uninstall hung).
I used HijackThis and deleted all the changes this junkware used. I am trying to restore homepages for my browsers.
I don't use antivirus, and I doubt it would have reacted to this junk which probably passes for real software.
Does anyone know precisely WHAT unwanted junk Download.com installs and how to clear out every last bit of it?
The software Revo Uninstaller had a good idea what had been installed and didn't hang when i tried to uninstall.20 more replies

I'm going to help someone install SP2 on their computer in a day or two. He says SP2 downloaded to his computer, he started the install but stopped it almost immediately to backup his files. It didn't install anything. He said he clicked Cancel or Exit to stop it and saw no prompt to save it anywhere, it just stopped and went away.
Where do we look to find the SP2 download? What is it called, and will I know what icon to click on to activate the install process?

You might, depending upon your Windows OS, get a slightly different Microsoft web site, however, the above is probably it.
If the above does not work for you, there may be a backdoor:
Download Media Feature Pack for Windows 7 N with Service Pack 1 and Windows 7 KN with Service Pack 1 (KB968211) from Official Microsoft Download Center
Windows 7 x86 & x64 versions available
If none of the above works for you, please let us know, there are many others who can help!
It would help if I could find the download, but I can't. I guess I rushed to get it installed and didn't see the "save for later" options. I know it's still on the hard drive someplace.
There should be an ESD folder somewhere containing the ISO file. If you can't find it, you can always re-run the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant using the key you bought and download it again.7 more replies
I just did a FRESH install of WIN7 on a new partition on my hard drive which has 2 other partitions with separate systems. I am having difficulties getting the WINDOWS UPDATE to work correctly to bring this FRESH install current. Attached is my CBS log that is compressed.
I already downloaded the "SYSTEM UPDATE READINESS" tool: Windows6.1-KB947821-v34-x86. It is currently running & searching for updates which I doubt will find any if nothing has been downloaded. I have also downloaded : "MS Fix It" http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9665683 in aggressive mode. I have not tried this yet. I am waiting for the READINESS tool to complete its job.
Is there anything in my CBS log that indicates problems? What else should I try?
Appreciate any assistance

Hi. Not sure this is the right forum...if not I apologize. I have a new (2-weeks) HP computer with Windows 8.1 installed. I have tried to install two programs via CD, both successfully. However, when the new programs check for updates (both say there is one available), I get a message that the update was not successful, as I am not the administrator.
This is baffling, as I am the only user, and when I check, Windows shows me logged in as Administrator. (There are no other user accounts active at all).
I asked for user help for one of the programs thru their website, and they had me doing all kinds of different things: Clean Boot, "manually" download and install their update, etc., but nothing works. They, too, are baffled. Now they want me to create a separate "user account," and try that. But a "user" is not "administrator," and if it doesn't recognize me as administrator, it sure won't recognize an administrator in a user account.
I thought all this was the program/website fault, but when the same thing happened when I installed the second program, it got me to worrying that maybe there's something "off" in Windows 8.1.
Any help anyone can give me would be appreciated.
PS....I hesitate to post the names of the companies involved, or the software I'm installing, but I will if you all think it is OK. Both are fairly well-known companies; not fly-by-nights.
Try right clicking the program and click "Run as Administrator" then try your update.15 more replies

For some reason, I couldn't quickly find the answer to this question via search engine,
...nor did I find the answer via the express-search on TSG.
Every few months, Adobe nags me to update to the newest version of Flash Player.
So I've been complying.
I now have quite a number of their Red Icons (ranging from 1,000 to many-thousand KB) lined up in my Download Folder.
So is it OK to delete older ones, and just keep, say, the 2 newest ones in Download folder?
Once you download and save files in your Downloads folder and then activate those saved files to install new programs or update current programs, you can delete them afterwards.

It's rumoured that Win 8.1 - Update 2, should be available sometime in August ...
A question ...
At home we have a Win 8.1 laptop (ASUS X54C), plus a Win 8.1 Desktop PC
Both machines currently run 8.1 64-bit Pro, with their own Microsoft key (... they are both legitimate / legal & registered OS's)
Here in South Africa, data is expensive, and slow .. (or at least it is in the small town I live in - my Max ADSL speed available is up to 4 Mbps). Our ADSL package from our monopolistic, Government-controlled, service provider is a capped service, and downloading the Windows 8.1. update 2, will put a serious dent in our monthly data allowance
So, my question this:
Is there a way I can download the upcoming update once only, say to a disc or USB, and then use it to update 2 different devices (i.e. the laptop, and the Desktop PC)?
Well Update 1 can be downloaded as a standalone update, so probably yes, but we will see.12 more replies

Hey guys, I recently changed my motherboard and cpu and was forced to reinstall my upgrade for vista home premium. Now that it has been reinstalled, I am unable to install any of the 54 required updates that are necessary for me to install the service pack. I would like to install these updates and service pack because frankly my Vista experience will suck without it. I've been on the phone with the microsoft guys for hours and have accomplished nothing. Here are some specs:
Intel Pentium 4; 3.4 ghz
2gb RAM, I have another 2gb stick that i'll install after the updates are made
Vista Home Premium Upgraded from Home Basic
Please let me know what you think-- or point me in the right direction if this question has already been answered. Thanks guys.
By the way, here's the error message: 80070002
previously I installed two hotfixes that addresses the boot up performance issue but then I downloaded a patch which also contain the two previous hotfixes which I have already downloaded.
Should I uninstall the previous 2 hot fixes or does it overwrite the previous hotfixes?
The two hotfixes were: kb:2510636,kb:2555428
Then the recent hotfix:kb2775511
If its already fixed why mess with it? Just keed the patch which already has the hotfixes and save it for later.1 more replies
Hello guys...I'm hoping someone can lead me to a quick and simple fix with this one. I am trying to optimize my sister's PC and am having an issue trying to complete the update.
First of all I find that there is an update available for this computer called Office XP Service Pack 3 and is highly recommended. So I follow the prompts to begin download and installation of the update. After a few minutes I will get a window that pops up and says "The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available Insert the "Microsoft Office XP Professional with front page" disk.
Obviously I don't have any such disk and so I click cancel. After about 20 seconds I get the update window that pops up and says that Updates could not be installed.........Office XP Service Pack 3.
My experience with Office XP...is that the CD is required anytime major modifications are made. The CD has a lot of the optional features and files which must be accesses when changes occur.I have a CD so it's not a nuisance for me.If Office came preinstalled...I don't know how those versions work. You might visit the Office website and just do a direct download of the SP, http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...ylang=en...then install it from the desktop.Louis1 more replies

EVGA nvidia 295 OC GFX card
750GB WD HD sata 3gb/s
850 watt psu
and the kicker
6GB Kingston HyperX 1600 ram
Now I bet you can guess what the problem is... Vista 32 bit wont use all my ram.. from what I see its actually only using 2gb of the 6gb (what a waste!)
to install the OS I got a copy of XP from one of my gaming buddies then bought a 32 bit Update disk from my school (ultimate 32 bit). Because its from my school and a certain licensed copy it only came with the 32 bit disk... my question is this, do you think my key would work If I were to get a 64 bit disk? If it were to work could I install it on my current setup (vista ultimate 32 bit service package 2, most disks from what I understand come in sp1...) or would I have to start over from scratch?
The main issue is I am trying to play GTA 4 and it seems like its using all my ram..
Thanks for the help,
Hello Dan, and welcome to Vista Forums.
Very nice system.
Yes, you can use your retail 32-bit Vista Ultimate upgrade key with any retail 64-bit Vista Ultimate disc to install it. Unfortunately you will have to do a clean install when going to 64-bit from 32-bit. This tutorial below will show you how to do a clean install from a upgrade Vista to help make it easier to do.

Here are full statements i got from event logs : Windows update could not be installed because of error 2359302 "" (Command line: ""C:\Windows\system32\wusa.exe" "C:\Users\Peter\Downloads\Windows8.1-KB2886439-x64.msu" ")
Any help will be appreciated!
Another weird thing is that every software installed after i had uninstalled always reinstalled automatically
My OS is windows 8.1 pro activated.
Spotted this by pure chance just now while looking in reliability monitor. On the 13th of this month it shows an update called "Bing Sports". As I have Windows update set to notify only this should not have happened. This update does not show in the Windows Update history or in installed updates.
I do believe thats the app for the Sports live tile, which if I remember correctly will update itself automatically when the app gets updated by Microsoft.6 more replies
This is a Dell running Win 7 Pro 64. I recently switched out the 500 GB hard drive for a 1 TB drive. Everything seemed to work fine, but I discovered today that Windows Update won't run. Although the service is running, I get the error msg, "unable to check for updates because the service is not running."
I ran sfc /scannow and it found corrupted system files it couldn't repair. The log is attached.
Any ideas what I might do now?
I already tried this: 1) Stop update service, 2) delete all the files in C:\Windows\Software Distribution, 3) restarted the Update service. Still get the same error message.
I wanted to do a repair-install, but this is a Dell system with OEM software, so I can't to a repair-install from the Dell installation disk. I'd really like to avoid a clean install. I'm guessing the new hard drive is somehow at the bottom of this.
EDIT: I downloaded the System Update Readiness Tool. When I tried to install it, I got the attached error message1 [Sorry, I can't figure out how to make manage the attachments. I got two different error messages when trying to install the SURT. Both are attached.]
EDIT2: I downloaded the SURT again, just in case. This time when I tried to install, I got this error message:
Where did the install disc come from ?
Did you make it ?
Is it retail ?
Is it OEM ?
Is windows activated with the key from the COA ?
How was windows installed to the new drive ?
After doing a repair install with my win xp oem disk with sp2, every thing seemed fine until I went to update security updates. There are 78 security updates that download but will not install. The only message is, security updates not installed. Should I do another repair/install? I have tried everything I can think of and come up empty. I have all security and virus, spyware programs turned off. Any help will be welcome, Thanks.

2 of my machines have automatically downloaded/upgraded using the recent Win 8.1 Upgrade 1, but one machine is still running the pre upgrade 8.1. I've attempted to explicitly install the upgrade via
Settings|Change PC Settings|Update & Recovery|Windows Update,
but none of the expected updates show up: KB 2919355, KB 2919442. I've searched my update history and neither of these has been installed. So, what's up? Is there another prerequisite update I need before the actual 8.1 update will show up in my list of available updates?
Hello Cohagan, and welcome to Eight Forums.
Have you already installed all other available Windows Updates? Double check through Control Panel -> Windows Updates instead to see if they may show there.
Windows Update - Check for and Install in Windows 8
I updated Win 7 Pro X64 to Win 8.
After applying all updates, I updated Win 8 Pro X64 to Windows 8.1.
When I look in the store now I don't see Update 1 nor do I see it in Windows Update.
I think I got update 1 when I did the 8.1 update but how do I tell for sure?
On the metro desktop, top right I have my account name, a power and a search icon.
I don't know if they are part of 8.1 or 8.1 update 1.
Launch one of those full screen apps. Then kick the cursor into the top of the screen. If the red X appears on the top right, then you are in 8.1.1.
Also, behind the tiles of the start screen, you should see your desktop picture - unless you finagled that already in 8.1.
I was check through the Add/Remove menu and found this installed on my PC - Windows Driver Package - Advanced Micro Devices (AmdK8) Processor - Link
I use an Intel Core2Quad processor, so how did this get installed on my PC? Is it safe to remove this?
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
Vista Home premium SP2, IE9.
Today, 4.5.2011, notification showed an update was available.
I have Windows Update set at Manual.
I was, at the time, in the middle of something. So, I let the update wait. But by the time I was done, the update was install already.
The update was just a Windows Defender KB915597, Def. 1.101.822.0
I checked the update settings... still on Manual.
I ran a Walwarebytes scan.... nothing found.
Any ideas why ?
Usually Security Essentials and Defender will up date automatically, even though set to manual. I know I have the same situation with Security Essentials.
They are being updated via defender and not automatic update.
I tried to install a stand alone download of Windows 8.1 Update but I get a message that it is installed,
I'm do not see how it could be installed, this install of my OS is only 1 day old and I have only downloaded and installed the 8.1 SP this morning.
When I look in Installed update the KB2919355 is shown as being installed but the date is the 19th March,
which was before it was released, I believe.
How can I be sure I have the update installed?
Another way to verify is to see if you have the new Power button on your Start screen like in step 2 Option One below.
Lock, Log off, Restart, Shut Down, Switch User - Windows 8
My computer has the automatic update feature enabled and periodically I get the yellow balloon in my systray saying there are updates available, so I click to download and install them. I keep getting "Security Update for Windows XP (KB981852)" is ready to install. I clickl to install and I get the message that it was successfully installed. If I look at the hisptory of updates, it appears to have been successfully installed 15 times, but it keeps coming up as needding to be installed. I went into the add/remove function on the control panel and there it is only listed once. I removed it and then re-installed the update but the yellow balloon always says it needs to be installed.
It is like the computer isn't registering the updates. I was never prompted to restart the computer but I did anyway and that hasn't effected it either as XP says it still needs to be installed. Any suggestions on how to get the update recognised so it will quit calling for the same update???
Thanks in advance for any advice.
Uncheck it and then select not to show it again.
I installed HOME instead of PRO by mistake on clean re-install
Can I upgrade to PRO without doing another clean install --I have a digital entitlement for it.
My error at the install prompt --I always tell other to READ the screen prompts when installing anything -- I've fallen into my own trap.
I need PRO --Language packs, RDP remote server and HYPER-V. Otherwise I would just leave it.
The tutorial below may be able to help you.
Upgrade Windows 10 Home to Windows 10 Pro
On a Toshiba laptop running Vista SP2 I can see an update that was installed by going to Windows Update > View Update History. I need to uninstall the update but when I click on the "Installed Updates" link to the right of To remove an update, see that update is not seen.
How can I remove that update that I know has been installed but can't be seen? Thank you.
A bit of a brute force method...
Write down the update number.
Restart the computer and tap the F8 key repeatedly during start up until the Boot mode screen comes up.
Select "Safe Mode"
When it has finished booting got to
type in RESTORE
Click "System Restore"
Look through the list and find the restore point prior to that update. If it is not on the list, there should be a check box on the lower left that says, "Show restore points older than 5 days," click that and look again. Select that restore point and follow the prompts. Be patient it can take up to an hour to complete. Do NOT interrupt the restore at any time.
Somehow I downloaded Windows Genuine Advantage Notification. It now shows on the update icon, to be installed. I don't want to install it. How can I get rid of it?
I am set up to get notification of updates before they are downloaded, and I don't remember seeing the notification for this. Possibly I accepted it by mistake, when I thought it was for the MS Defender. I always go into the Custom Install to make sure which files are to be installed, deselecting any I don't want. However, this is the only one being held, and I can't seem to deselect it.
Can you tell me both how to get rid of this downloaded item without installing it, and WHERE on my hard drive downloaded updates are placed, pending installation.
Why don't you want to install it ?
Last week I had to get my computer reformated and windows update seemed fine. I have Windows XP Pro and it's just the bast few days I've had problems. My updater keeps alerting me to three files I need installing. Two are 'Update for Windows XP' and one is a 'Security Update for Windows XP' I click install and it goes through the process and says all three are done and installed fine. I get no errors or anything, but then as soon as it goes away, the yellow shield pops up again and says I have the same three items needing to be installed.
I've tried updating at least three times now and each time it says it was successful only for it to pop up again. I've even written the KB numbers that are written after it down and it's the same thing each time. I've tried rebooting and then doing it but that hasn't done anything either. I didn't have this problem with any of the previous updates and I'm not sure what to do now.
Hi Corvinus and Welcome to Bleeping Computer. Click Start/ All Programs/ select Windows Update. It will link you to the Windows update website and show updates needed.Select Update History in the left hand window of your screen on this site. This will show all updates, which ones failed and why.You are probably missing previous critical updates and may have to go back and get those updates, then the Windows XP SP2 will work properly. Follow the restart prompts in between each update as instructed until they are all done. It will take a while, but you'll be back in business and running soothly in no time.1 more replies
My husband received notification that the PC required an update, he accepted the update and then the PC rebooted and came up with a prompt to login in. The username is pre filled in with my first and last name. (Maybe an admin acct?). I have tried every password I have on file and then some. I cannot get into the PC. Rebooted many times, tried safeboot, last good configuration... Still brings me to the login. He doesn't remember if it was Microsoft or McAfee. Has there been a recent update that would cause this? How can I get back into the PC??
Need more information! When you say you can't access you system are you at the windows login or is it the Mcafee security feature that's preventing you from logging into your machine?

While looking into recently installed Windows Updates I noticed something strange.
This month there were five Important Office 2007 updates offered to me. I installed them and it shows this in Update History. But when I look in Installed Updates (where I would need to uninstall from) it lists 20 something updates from that same date.
How is this possible? Are there other updates within the main update? I've never spent a lot of time looking at Installed Updates but it seems this may occur for other updates as well.
They often do not match. Mine don't.
"View Update History" often only shows more recent updates.
The one marked "Installed Updates" shows the entire list and allows for uninstalling them if necessary.
Nothing to worry about.
My comment today about this in the Windows Vista board of the forum should have been better placed here, not there. Old toshiba laptop with Windows XP, s.p.3 - I accidently downloaded and installed M.S. Update KB971029, about the AutoPlay. After computer restart, I tried inserting a flashdrive storage device and found no difference from not having the update. The same dialog box opens showing me the typical selections to make for the device. I did not understand the description about this update from the Microsoft webpages nor from some of the discussions here (or on the Vista board of Bleeping Computer), so I am not sure what I really gained or lost by having this update now on the XP computer.Mod Edit: Moved Vista post to this topic ~ Hamluis. This Miscrosoft update, kb971029, was accidently installed today on the machine having Windows XP s.p. 3, because of confusion in choosing "Express" or "Custom". So, now the update is on the machine. After a ReStart, I tried inserting a flash-drive just to see what would happen. The same typical dialog came up, as usual the way it would before taking this update. I did not yet try opening a file from a flash-drive this way, so maybe that is the necessary next check to do.Based on this, I do not know what difference this update was supposed to make. I have not understood the M.S. description of the update; so I do not know exactly what it does nor how having this update is any different from not having thi... Read more

Hello all, I am new to the forum, so please accept my apologies if I leave any information out.

I've already installed the other updates that appeared in Windows Update. The only two updates that remain to be downloaded/installed are KB2488113 and SP1 (KB976932). However, KB2488113 is listed as an "optional update". Does it need to be installed at all, and if so, should it be installed before I download/install SP1?

Hello, I am helping a friend fix his computer. A Dell InspironN5030
There is a red X over the sound icon in the task bar and he has no sound, he belives this started after the last Windows Update. He did have sound before. When I go to Sound in Control Panel a message pops up saying "No audio devices installed." When I go to Services The Windows Audio Properties says "Windows could not start the Windows Audio Service on local computer. Error 1608: The dependency service or group failed to start." When I go to Dependencies the Multimedia Class Scheduler is started. The Remote Procedure Call is started. The DCOM Service Process Launcher is started. The RPC Endpoint Mapper is started. The Windows Audio Endpoint Builder is stopped. When I try to start it I get this message: "Windows could not start the Windows Audio Endpoint Builder Error 999 Error performed in page operation." The Plug and Play is started.
I have ran MalwareBytes, CCleaner, TDSSKiller. I have noticed there are a lot of services stopped but first things first and get the sound going.
Thanks for the help.

First of all, welcome to BC !
As a first step I would go to the Dell web-site and download and install the audiio drivers for your Inspiron and see if that solves your problem. Your Dell probably has a barcode on it somewhere. If you copy the barcode number and type it into the search box on the service page on the Dell web-site you will normally be taken to a page which has all the drivers for your computer - I wish more manufacturers would do this !
If this gets you your sound back, great. If it doesn't, post back.
As for your non-running services, if you go into 'Computer management' you can decide how services you want to run startup. To get there, clcik 'Start', RIGHT click on 'Computer' in the start menu, then click 'Manage' in the drop-down menu that appears. Services are at the bottom of the dialogue box. If you click any service you want to change the startup for, click on the service, then RIGHT click and in the dialogue box that appears you will find the option to change the startup type. Your choices are 'automatic', 'Manual' and 'Disable'.
I installed "optional updates" for Vista Home Edition, and all of a sudden my resolution won't go above 1280x1024 (I have a 1680x1050 monitor that was running fine before the update) and my sound card no longer has any drivers.
According to dxdiag, the Radeon driver is still there (my card is an x1600), but there is no sound driver or sound card detected now. I have a Dell Dimension E521 and I was using the sound card integrated into the motherboard. One of the updates I installed was an nForce update for my mobo, so I'm assuming that's the one that wrecked my sound.
I do not have any recent restore point to do a system restore. How does downloading an update to my drivers instead delete my drivers? Should I just go redownload the drivers specifically from the ATI and nVidia sites, or could there be something else weird going on here that I need to know about?
Just redownload the drivers1 more replies
My automatic windows update doesnt work anymore, even reinstalling a new XP sent to me by microsoft didnt sort that out.
I am waiting for Microsoft to come up with a solution.
In the mean time I want to make sure I install all updates. How can I see which updates are installed and where do I go to pick up the latest manually

I am running Vista Home Premium. I have 7 downloaded updates to be installed for Mircrosoft Office 2007. I no longer have Mirosoft Office 2007 on my computer, I don't want to install the updates for it. But removing the check mark does not get rid of the download, it only stops the installation. How do I get rid of download?
Open Windows Explorer. Locate the System drive (the one with your OS on it) and click on the > next to it. Then Windows > Distribution Software, Then click on the Downloads folder so its contents is displayed in the right hand window. Delete everything in the Downloads folder. That should do it.

Ive been struggling for a few weeks now getting the SP1 update installed on my machine, but im now finally up and running and wanted to share what worked for in the hope it may help some others.
Ok so started off getting probably half a dozen different error codes when varying the install method, using a number of guides over the internet. The cbs file was looked at numerous times but yet I still couldnt nail the problem. So sod it i tried the Repair install, which took forever.... And you guessed it, SP1 STILL wouldnt install. I will list the reapir install link just incase somewhere deep in the glorious windows files it did infact help fix the problem in the long run but im not convinced.
1. Do a Repair Install, guide here. Repair Install
2. Download the STANDALONE SP1 file from Microsoft (windows6.1-KB976932-X64.exe for 64-Bit) Save to desktop.
3. Goto Control Panel > Programs
4. Turn Windows Features On/Off
5. Remove tick from Internet Explorer 9/8, Click OK. May need restart here.
6. Head back to control panel, Programs and Features
7. Uninstall ANYTHING listed as Microsoft.NET Framework
8. Click Start, type msconfig in search bar.
9. Select the Boot menu and check Safe Mode, minimal is fine.
10. Click Apply, OK, then restart the PC.
11. Now in safe mode, uncheck the safe mode boot option in msconfig
12. Apply and OK again, BUT NO RESTART
13. Run the STANDALONE SP1 file you downloaded earlier let it do its stuff.
Now hopefully after a couple ... Read more

how can i delete an update that has been downloaded but not yet installed? i'm sure that this update caused the corruption/deletion of my user profile and i've restored my system to a date before it was installed. but now anytime i want to turn my computer off, it wants to re-install the update. how can i avoid this? thanks!
The best way clear the whole C:\Windows\SoftwareDistrubution folder and hide problematic hotfixes in Windows Update.Of course in this case you remove all downloaded hotfixes (wanted and unwanted). If you really want to remove only particular hotfix use any good 3p file manager (in my opinion build-in explorer is not good too to this kind operations) and search in file names hotfix ID,i.e if you want find data related to KB976672,you have to find in names this ID.
Relate to problematic updates:
If really some updates cause problems I suggest contact with manufacturer support or MS support, hidding updates is only temporary solution,if you leave it,you will have another problems with other updates in future too.

My Windows Store gives me this message when i click on update to windows 8.1
It says ''Windows is getting your Windows 8.1 upgrade ready. You will automatically be prompted to install Windows 8.1 soon. You can continue to use your PC in the meantime''.
Its almost been a week since I'm getting this message. Plus i checked for the updates. I have all the latest updates. Don't know what seems the problem. I had installed windows 8.1 before. But as it was sluggish i uninstalled it and came back to windows 8.
My specs are :-
Dell Inspiron 3537,
Intel Core i5 ,
6 GB RAM,
64 Bit ,
AMD RADEON Graphics.
Are you current with all Windows Updates for 8.0?
Better yet, you can download a legal iso for 8.1 following Option One here: Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 ISO - Download or Create
Burn a DVD or create a installable flash drive then use it to upgrade from 8.0 to 8.1 or better yet, backup your data then do a clean install of 8.1 directly. It will use the embedded 8.0 key for the install.
I just had a quick question I have a LG CH08LS10 Blu ray drive and I have been having glitches with some Blu Rays namely Terminator Salvation and The Dark Knight they run choppy and stutter. All of my other Blu Rays run fine.
Anyway the software that came with the Blu Ray Drive came with the LG Tool Kit. When I first got the drive I used it to auto look for firmware updates. It found one update to make the drive compatible with Windows 7. It says that the update was successful but I'm unsure whether that's the case or not as I can't find out where to find out which firmware I have right now.
So I have tried everything to fix the stuttering issue with the two Blu Rays. I've updated Java, upgraded the Blu Ray playing software, updated graphics drivers, switched off tons of start up programs and still Terminator Salvation and The Dark Knight stutter. It doesn't make sense because TS spikes at 100% percent CPU usage all the time and 2012 is 50% percent.
So should I just go to the LG website and manually download the firmware update? Or will that damage my drive?

You have a weak CPU and that may be the problem.
Been ignoring this box for a while now and I'll try one more attempt at a fix before wiping and reinstalling. It started when for the 1st time ever, Windows started installing updates w/o my initiating same. I looked up the error, saw several folks afflicted, followed MS advice on technet and support forums and after several efforts just gave up as i didn't have the time.
These are the last 4 entries in the Windows setup log

I know this may sound pretty simple; but Im not sure if you have tried it or not; have you tried rebooting this server and then trying to install the updates? Sometimes it only takes something as simple as rebooting to refresh everything and enables windows to close out any processes that are open that arent needed so you can hopefully try and run those update(s) again. If you try that and that does nothing; its possible you may have a corrupt windows update folder in which case you might be able to try a system repair off the windows disc if you have one somewhere and that may help. If you try both things and still get nowhere with it; post back and we can go from there.9 more replies
Windows 8 shipped with new Dell desktop. Using my existing flatscreen non-touch monitor and new Logitech mouse and keyboard. Mouse and keyboard work great, Windows 8 was annoying but usable...until January updates auto-installed. Latest update was Jan 23. After that update, I could not get Google Chrome to remain as default browser - computer switched to Bing after closing a search or starting a new one. Worse, I could not open an .mp3 file attached to a GMail message. When I clicked on the file, the Metro music screen popped up by my selection was nowhere to be found. These are choir .mp3's they're mailed weekly, and they're critical to me. So I did a system restore to January 3, and now things are sort of back to normal. Chrome doesn't go away and I open those .mp3's like I used to.
I'm afraid to allow Microsoft to update again, and the log indicated one of them was a security update and another was a critical update. Any ideas what the heck happened to Chrome and opening music files from GMail?
So as not to start another thread I'll add that my brand new PC also had issues in Jan after an update. It kept randomly crashing on me. I did a recovery and shut auto update off.2 more replies
After the computer shutdown and reboot, the computer tries to install windows updates, but cannot.
Here are the messages I see.

Click OK to try again or enter an alternate pathto a folder containing the installation package 'Destinations.msi' in the box below
use source c:\users\xxxx\AppData\Local\Temp\7zS003
Then I get another dialog box

This repeated every time I tried.

Ok, Start by uninstalling all but one of your antiviruses. They tend to cause conflicts with each other.

The webcam software supplied with the nothebook (YouCam 3.5) cannot be installed. When attempted (after d/l) the message says that software installation "is blocked because the publisher can't be verified.." Again this seems to be because of Windows 10. Any ideas???More replies
Upon attempted update to Insider build 11082 it failed with the above message and asked me to login with a different account. It's the same account I've used in the program since its inception without issue and the MS account troubleshooter doesn't indicate a problem.
Has anyone heard of this issue and a possible resolution? I did a clean install of 10586 this morning and the account seems OK but the new build has yet to appear in WU.
Upgraded from clean install without incident. No idea at all what the issue was with my account.0 more replies

A few days ago I installed a windows update (they install automatically) and when I turned my computer back on all my files were gone! It looks like all my settings were reset to when I first got the computer except all of my programs are still there. At first I thought the windows updated did this, but I did some searching online and read that it was probably a virus, and I didn't believe it, but now I know I have some type of virus because whenever I type in a web address in my browser it redirects to some other websites.
Luckily it didn't actually delete my files, when I go to c:\users\lapaul (myusername) my files are still all there, but for some reason when I go to the documents folder or pictures folder, no files are there. It seems like when windows is loading it is loading into the public user profile, or some other user profile that's not mine and that is why my files are there.
So anyways, I don't know what happened, but there is a button on my laptop where I just press it and it resets my computer to how it was the first day I got it. So I am going to just do that, but I want to backup my files first.
So my question is, how do I copy my files to an external hard drive while making sure none of the files are infected and that they don't infect my external hard drive? I just bought a brand new 1TB external hard drive and I haven't even opened it yet, and I don't want to get it infected the first time I use it.
Also, does anyone have any id... Read more
I suspect that your profile was corrupt. If your profile was corrupt then windows logs onto a temp profile. You can see this in your Users folder there will be a Temp directory.
This can be fixed.
Try this tutorial on how to fix a corrupt profile:
I hope this helps!
I had chrome open in the background and a pop-up appeared saying that chrome needed to update. I haven't ever manually updated chrome from what I remembered, so I thought this was normal. I clicked okay and it downloaded an installer. I opened it and blindly clicked yes to the security pop-up thing, the one that asks for permissions. I unchecked a bunch of optional things, which I found weird but for some stupid reason I still went forward. I installed it and then felt really suspicious after googling around. I still had the .exe file, it is named "Google Chrome.exe". I opened it so that I could check the company on the permission pop-up, and it's from a company called "Payments Interactive SL". I denied permission after checking this. I am posting here because nothing seems to have changed, but I really think it was a virus because of the strange company name and the many "optional" files that were junk and ad things. There are no pop-ups, strange redirects, or slowdowns as far as I know. I am using Windows 8. I scanned my computer with Avast (only a quick scan) and it found nothing. When typing while Avast was scanning, my keyboard kept lagging occasionally. I would type quickly and the letters would appear slowly. I think maybe it was just because Avast was scanning, but I am noting it just to make sure.
Thanks for any help in advance.

Help!! I installed SP2 for XP and had a problem with connecting to the internet. So after some checking, I undid my changes with system restore. I now am back with SP1 but can not download anything. I run Avast, and it can not download updates. I tried downloading a file off the web and get an error stating, 'UNABLE TO DOWNLOAD INSTALLATION SCRIPT. MAKE SURE YOU ARE CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET.' Here's my setup. Again I run XP SP1. I have Comcast ISP with a Motorola Cable Modem with a broadband wireless router. Now, I also updated my laptop with SP2 with no problem. I can still access internet and download files with the laptop. So this limits my problem to my home pc, correct? I tried looking to see if there were any firewalls blocking, but I could not tell. Any suggestions? All help is appreciated.

Before i begin i have used the search tool on this site.
Is there any way you can download the latest Windows 7 updates as an actual file? Rather than "Check for updates". I currently get an error on a few machines and it would be easier to just go around and install the updates from a file... And if so, would it be possible from a Microsoft website? I've searched for sometime and i cannot find any such thing.
Again, sorry if this is a silly question.. but it has been plaguing my mind for a while now.
Thank you in advance.
