Please help a Noob - XP Start causes 70+ Windows Explorer Windows to Open

Q: Please help a Noob - XP Start causes 70+ Windows Explorer Windows to Open

Hi,

I've got a very strange problem.

When I start XP, Windows File Explorer launches 70+ times in separate windows.

When it finishes I can close them and everything works fine.

I've done full Virus scans with Kaspersky and AVG, and I've run CC Cleaner and fixed any registry errors, but it still happens.

Please, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If you procrastinate, and you decide to use System Restore, other changes may also

Doing it now, will result in the desired change to be made with little other

Using the Windows Explorer link in the Start Menu or anywhere else works fine...

Where are the settings for that "Open Windows Explorer" option stored? Has anyone seen this problem?

Hello,

How long has this been going on?

You may want to try a system files check. Open an elevated command prompt and enter sfc /scannow.

I had XP Antivirus 2012 on my computer initially, and was able to fix it by following directions. However, then another "Security Protection" virus got onto the computer. I followed all directions from the bleepingcomputer.com tutorial, but it still did not fix the problem. When I start the computer and it loads normally lots and lots of blank windows pop up repeatedly on the desktop. Whenever I try to start any program an error message pops up saying that some part of a file is missing, no matter what program I try to open.

Hi,
I found this forum and the following thread by searching Google. It appears that this thread: http://forums.techguy.org/malware-r...olved-internet-explorer-opens-multiple-2.html

Describes the problem that my friends laptop has but I can't make out in this thread what the fix was. Can anyone tell me from this link what the fix was - I'm assuming they had success - it claims to have been solved? Maybe I didn't get enough sleep last night but I'm not getting it!

Thanks for any/all help!

Hi,

I hope I'm putting this in the correct forum.

I have been trying to find out why I am not able to open any ftp files in windows explorer using win 7 x64

I can successfully open an ftp site in w/explorer and browse the folders without any problems, however, I don't get any previews (eg. jpg files) and if I double click on any file that should have an association like a jpg nothing happens (although a short hourglass / activity wheel appears). I have to manually copy the file or drag it out onto a local folder to be able to do this.

I don't remember this kind of restriction the last time I did it although that was some time ago and perhaps on XP but can anyone shed some light on what might be wrong here? I have no such problems via an ftp client but would like to get this quick method working for convenience.

One clue / difference is when I right click > properties on a file, I will get a single 'general' tab that lists filetype, location, size and modified and then a permissions box immediately below with 6 check boxes.
This seems to prove to me that the explorer is not acting as an explorer as it should but is in some other mode. But as I say I can copy files out and into the window.

Just to eliminate a few thing: I have tried this with numerous ftp sites. I have had no such problems when logging in via an explorer app on my Android device.

Any clues would be a great help.

A:FTP in windows explorer works but I can't open files (Windows 7 x64)

That's the way FTP protocol works, basically. It just allows to list files and upload/download, plus a bunch of extra fuctions, but that's all. It doesn't supports most of the features of normal filesystems that allow to do what you want.

For examples, for previewing JPGs, that would mean that it must download every single file (without user consent) to generate those nasty thumbnails. This could be a potential enormous waste of bandwidth and as such is not supported.

"Opening" a file has also no meaning in a FTP server. What actually clients do there is to download files to a temporary location and open those with local programs. This is what your Android client must be doing.
As for why Explorer doesn't do this? I would begin checking file associations to see if that one works well locally at least.

However, normally, I would suggest a serious FTP client, as Explorer is really poor in this aspect.

Hey guys, thanks for viewing my post... This has been going on for about 2 weeks now and I can't figure out the cause...

Every time I open "My Computer" or anything with windows explorer, everything is fine for a few seconds... then starts to slow... then explorer completely locks up and crashes without an error message... screen shows only the wallpaper for a few minutes... then explorer starts back up, icons come back, etc and all is normal again.

This only seems to happen when utilizing Windows Explorer. I've tried to change the settings on the automatic thumbnail view thinking THAT was the problem, but it always crashes before I can go in there. (Plus I haven't changed settings in that area any time recently, and I do a lot of graphics so a thumbnail preview is a must)

I assume this is just a dumb XP problem, but searching for it with terms like "windows explorer crashes" etc comes up with only Internet Explorer results... I have 1.5g of ram and a decent processor in my HP Pavilion a535w... and only since a few weeks ago have I had any problems like this. NEED HELP!

Also, ever since about a month after getting a new graphics card... sometimes it takes 1-5 tries to get my computer to boot if just recently shut off or restarted. The computer appears to come on, but it doesn't make any loading clicks, and the monitor won't turn on.

I don't think they're related, but both are equally annoying.

Hello,

I have recently had an issues with Windows 7. I went to restart my computer and before it shut down it said "Installing Windows update 30% complete" ... then it shut down fine. Upon restart there was no text under and icons, the start menu does not work at all and any windows I open such as My Computer are blank and have condensed icons on the left hand side. Im wondering if it could be a corrupt user profile? or something wrong with my video card, which I have recently updated. I also think it could be some sort of spyware/malware but not entirely sure. Please if anyone knows anything about this let me know. Also a system restore did nothing to help ss well as control+alt+delete.  I will attach a few screenshots to help visualize.

Thank you

I first started experiencing problems with my computer when I was searching in Google and being redirected to sites that were clearly not the ones I wanted to go to. I ran Malware Bytes - Anti-Malware and it detected and cleaned several problems but after rebooting my computer I keep getting the error message 'Windows Explorer has stopped working' and Windows Vista never finishes loading. I tried running in Safe Mode as well and I get the same message without Vista loading. Can anyone help me?

A:Windows Vista does not start. (Windows Explorer has stopped working.)

I see from the number of posts that alot of people have problems and probably not enough mods or help to solve everyone's problems including mine, but if someone can help me to run in safe mode I will try to solve my problem myself.

Finally got my laptop fixed, installed a new HDD. Reloaded my OEM Vista from a disk image, installed SP2 and a whole bunch of updates using Windows Update.

Soon thereafter (after successfully using Update several times), Update stopped working. Returned an error message when it tried to start, but the error number showed no results in Search.

Now Windows Update will not start at all. The window it should appear in remains white and the timer spins endlessly. Can close the window only by killing the program in Task Manager, at which point I'm notified that Win Explorer has crashed.

Googling brings up lots of crashes after individual updates, but I can't find anything on this behavior.

Any suggestions on how to rebuild Windows Update without a reinstall of the whole OS?

Thanks.

I have a few recovery questions for which I was unable to find specific answers to in the forum, but I did try to look first.
1) Is the recovery partition on my new Asus laptop a static recovery image which basically contains the OEM's Windows 8 installation? In other words, something that never changes?
2) If I make a USB bootable recovery drive with the OEM recovery partition copied to it, this means that I have two recovery options (one on the hard disk and one on the USB stick). Is this correct?
3) Regarding question #2, is the option to create a recovery drive on a USB drive (with OEM recovery partition) just a redundant measure in case the hard drive fails?
4) If I make a recovery option on a USB stick, with OEM partition copied, and test it, can I remove the recovery partition on my hard drive and gain the space back?
5) Is there a way to create a customized recovery partition with specific settings or configurations in place of the OEM recovery partition area? (I think I'd have to use a 3rd party imaging tool for this?
6) Exactly what partitions are restored to when doing a full recovery option (reset)?
7) I tested a full recovery restore last night from my USB stick and it took a very long time (hours?). Can I assume that if I do a recovery (reset) from the partition on my hard drive it will be much faster?

That's it. Thanks!

A:Windows 8 basic recovery ?'s for a noob Windows 8 user

Hello again marklyn,

I see you bailed out of that other post and started a new thread here; eh? So, did you ever figure out why you don't have the ability to "create a system image" in control panel? Anyway, I certainly can't untangle your myriad of questions and provide you with a specific direction because I'm not really sure where you want to end up with this whole thing; however, I can suggest that you need to provide a screenshot of disk management (as previously requested) so maybe someone else can help you from there. However, it really seems like you are heading for trouble with all that you are trying to do so, with that said, I would strongly recommend backing up whatever you have now and then doing a clean legacy or uefi Win 8 install. Once done, you can use a 3rd party software (eg, Macrium Reflect Free) to backup/restore system images as required. Good luck in whatever decisions you may make and I hope somebody can answer all your questions.

A:Windows Explorer Crash when I start Windows XP

It could be your printer driver causing this. Go to Start > Printers and fax > and right click the Printer and delete it.

Reboot and see if that error disappears. If so, go back and reinstall the printer. If the error returns, you'll need to get the latest drivers for the printer.

Then please check this. It doesn't say it applies to XP but worthy of consideration.

I cannot get my FTP site to open in Windows Explorer on my desktop running Windows 7 Pro. The site is located at the University, not on my local net. I can open the FTP site in IE9 and look at the files etc. I can also open it to Windows Explorer and copy/delete/paste files from my laptop running Windows 2010, IE9 and plugged into the same router as my desktop.
1) I have tried to copy the registry values for ftp from the (working) laptop to the (nonworking) desktop, they copied okay but did not change performance as suggested in one forum.
2) I have tried to use the Map Network Drive approach as suggested in other forums, but get stopped when I enter the ftp site and get a "The folder you chose does not seem to be valid, choose another.." error in the Add Network Location Wizard.
3) I have disabled the firewall in my desktop (MS Security Essentials)...no luck
4) I have reset, and re-adjusted the IE options so that it either allows or does not allow Passive FTP. Of course I have checked the "Allow FTP in Windows Explorer" box as well
5) I have attempted many fixes proposed by various forums without luck
6) I have sacrificed small animals to the computer gods and chanted network mantras until passing out (well, maybe not that desperate, but getting there)
Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance

Is it possible for you to upload a screenshot of any errors that you get when trying to access the site? This could help us in finding a solution.

Also may I ask if it is a requirement to use FTP using Windows Explorer? If not then I would strongly advise a dedicated FTP client such as FileZilla. I must apologise that I am on my phone while typing this so I am unable to obtain a link to it however I will return and add one when I reach a machine.

A:open Windows Explorer

Right click on the shortcut that you use to open Windows Explorer and select Properties.
Then select the Shortcut tab.
In the target box it'll say something like "%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe " (without the quotes)
Replace it with "%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /n, /e, /select, C:\ " (without the quotes) and click on OK

Whenever I click on windows explorer this error message comes up

AppName: explorer.exe AppVer: 6.0.2600.0 ModName: kernel32.dll

and explorer wont open at all. The same happens with my documents, recycle bin, my computer etc. . .

then when I close the error down about a billion rundll32 files start flooding my task manager. I think these are two separate problems, but i don't know.

Does anyone know how I can sort this out?

Every time that I try to open an explorer window, such as My Documents, and My Computer, they will come up and quickly disappear. I believe that I either have a virus or spyware. Could someone examine this log and tell me if something is wrong here.

Thanks!

If I try to open up any folder to browse it, W.explorer opens, the computer freezes for a moment and then it closes.Since this started, Avast has detected several trojan horses which i have moved to chest.I have taken the steps from here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/34773/preparation-guide-for-use-before-using-malware-removal-tools-and-requesting-help/ apart from posting the log in a new topic, as I am not sure if the problem is due to Malware or something else.I am using Windows Vista.Anyone know what might be wrong, and should I post my HJT log in the forum for help?

A:Windows Explorer Does Not Open

Post your log in the HijackThis Logs and Malware Removal forum, NOT here, for assistance by the HJT Team Experts. A member of the Team will walk you through, step by step, on how to clean your computer. If you post your log back in this thread, the response from the HJT Team will be delayed because your post will have to be moved. This means it will fall in line behind any others posted that same day. Start a new topic, give it a relevant title and post your log along with a brief description of your problem, a summary of any anti-malware tools you have used and a summary of any steps that you have performed on your own. Please include the top portion of the HijackThis log that lists version information. An expert will analyze your log and reply with instructions advising you what to fix. After doing this, we would appreciate if you post a link to your log back here so we know that your getting help from the HJT Team. Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response because the HJT Team members are very busy working logs posted before yours. They are volunteers who will help you out as soon as possible. Once you have made your post and are waiting, please DO NOT "bump" your post or make another reply until it has been responded to by a member of the HJT Team. Hi,

Windows' explorer will not open on top. If I've got other applications open and I click on the 'My Computer' icon in the taskbar the Explorer window opens behind the window of the opened application.

Maybe my mind is playing tricks on me, but I thought those windows used to open 'on top'.

If so. How do I restore the old behaviour ?

A:Windows' explorer won't open on top?

If you can't find the 'native' way to accomplish this, you can take a look at these 3rd party apps:

Hello

I am having a problem with my PC. Windows explorer, My Computer and Internet Explorer won't open. When I double-click on My Computer, the icons and taskbar disappear for a few seconds, then re-appear but My Computer still doesn't open.

I ran Spybot and AVG, there were some things found and they cleared them.

I have posted the HJT log (ran in Safe Mode), if someone could have a look at it, I would be grateful.

recently I had cable internet installed and afterwards now when I click on open link in new window it only opens it in the original window and the only way I can get separate windows up is with those pop ups that don't let you change the address. I already tried resetting web settings and going into the advanced tab on the internet properties and restoring defaults. Is there some way to fix this?

When I insert a flash drive into my USB, windows explorer won't open automatically. I activated auto play for it and it still won't open on insert. Is there something else I'm missing? Thanks.

A:Windows explorer won't open w/USB

Windows Explorer generally won't when first going to plug in any external device. The Action center prompt for options of run or browse files will usually be seen along with any popup your av program or other system protection inplace to scan the drive.

If you even go into the Disk Management and assign a specific drive letter to it and then use the Safely Remove option when going to plug the drive back in later and you open WE the same letter will be seen for the drive. The automatic system protections will still prompt to scan while WE won't open up automatically.

Typically the option for browsing files is seen when inserting a data disk or software disk in the optical drive with the auto run option disabled for various types of software and other installers in the Action Center. The option to run something or view files will then open up a window for browsing files on a disk.

I've already cleaned my system with Norton (Full Version - not pirated or anything - Usually works great) but when I try to open Win Explorer, I immediately get a message saying Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. I think we've all seen this one. Right?

Anyway, I don't know what to do now. I've also restarted, just so you know. No dice.

I haven't noticed any other problems with any other apps thus far either.

Hey all.
Having quite a bit of trouble with vista SP1. The file browser (windows explorer) won't work. As in, viewing folders and files (and the recycle bin). This all started when I installed some software, which somehow made it so that each time I click on a folder, a new window is opened. I went in and disabled the Launch ... in new process option (don't remember exactly what it was called). So, I went and found that this registry hack seemed to do it for someone with a similar problem http://windowsxp.mvps.org/reg/samefolderwindow.reg (found on http://www.thinkdigit.com/forum/show...t=31485&page=2). This didn't achieve the desired results. Now, windows explorer won't open at all. Also, whenever I try to open windows explorer, i notice that the explorer.exe process starts hoarding a ton of CPU power (it jumps between 0% and around 85%). I can tell that it's trying to do something, but it won't quite work correctly.
Again, by windows explorer, I'm only referring to the file browser part of it (the desktop also runs under explorer.exe for those who don't know).

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as system restore hasn't done the trick...

Here's a copy of the .reg file I used that caused this to happen:

Hi,

A week ago, my dell desktop started acting strangely by saying "Windows security alert, click here to download the anti virus software otherwise you system is at risk ..blah blah". Damn it, I thought it is a real alert, clicked on it and I am doomed now.

I ran BitDefender Online AV scan & fix and I guess the system is safe now. But I can't launch any programs like - Windows Explorer, My Computer, Control Panel etc. (strangely IE started working after couple of tries).

When I right click on "Start" and click on Explorer, it says "C:\Windows\Explorer.exe" - Windows cannot access the specified path or file. But I can see the file explorer.exe in c:\windows. (by typing the directory name in IE, I am able to go there). By right clicking on explorer.exe and doing a "run as", I am able to run it. This is the case for any executables in the machine.

Hi
Make sure you have already run Adaware, Spybot S & D(check for updates) and CWShredder as these will do a preliminary clean first.

Then....
Turn off your System Restore.(if using xp) See Here.Reinstate it when your log is cleaned. Now close your browser window and run hjt in safe mode... How To Run Safemode and have "Hijack This" fix the following by placing a check in the appropriate boxes and selecting "fix checked".
Uninstall any folders that I have highlighted likewise, remove the highlighted files from your hard drive. Make sure to have your system set to show hidden files and folders.. How To Show Files .Check first as some folders maybe uninstalled via the Add/Remove program..Please post a new log when finished...Before doing so,please put HJT in a folder of its own.

Whenever I try to open an Explorer window to manage files on my hard drive, the folder icon will appear on the task bar, but no Explorer window will be open. If I click on the folder icon on the task bar, instead of opening an Explorer window, the folder icon will appear in the system tray area. If I click on the folder icon in the system tray area, the folder will jump back to the task bar, and still no Explorer window will open.

Has anyone ever encountered this problem? How do I fix this? All advice appreciated!

A:Windows Explorer Won't Open

I've never seen this behavior (or heard of it).

Do you have a restore point from before the problem started?
Do you have a backup image from before the problem started?
Does a re-boot fix the issue?
Does killing Explorer in Task Manager and restarting Explorer fix it?
Have you scanned for viruses and malware?

Run the System File Checker.

Start Windows normally

I tried each one but all them doesn't work. Each time I choose one of the options the original message opens again, it goes back and forth.

I had AV8. I have since installed PC Tools Spyware Doctor and Registry Mechanic. I have run both and I thought all the virus was gone. Strange things continue to happen occasionally. One is that my windows explorer sometimes will not open. I eventually have to power my laptop off in order to get out of that hangup. I know this is not good. How can I find out what the problem is? Thanks.

A:Windows Explorer Slow to Open or Not at All

1) You should NEVER use any registry cleaners or utilities. NEVER.
2) Nothing you said you ran would have anything to do with ridding your system of a virus
3) If I were you I'd post in the malware forum on this site.

This was possible in IE7 & 8. But I don't see this option in 9. I REALLY hope the didn't get rid of it, because it was really nice for FTP'ing.

Anyone know if it's still there?

Edit: Nevermind.

I don't have that option...

It must be dependent on whether or not you're already viewing an FTP

Any way to have the windows explorer icon on the taskbar open a window that is already snapped to one side? Rather than having to manually snap it? I don't mind if it applies to all of the applications on the taskbar either.

Just want to shave a few milliseconds off my time.

First world problems

A:Open Windows Explorer Already Snapped

Hi,

There is 2 real options.

As far as I know, there is no inherent option for windows 7 explorer to do this

Your 2 options are,

Download a program such as Windows Manager which you can set the location of applications when they are loaded next time.

The easier option is to snap the window to the left/right, and then resize it slightly inwards from the top/bottom corner and then close it with the red x. When you reopen it, it will be basically snapped to the side. I've personally tested this on my machine which is also windows 7 and it works fine

Hope this helps you out.

Regards,

Moltenz

Okay, I have this problem with my usual web browser Internet Explorer. For a while, I would use it with no problem. Sometimes, I would get error messages of something within it getting an error and having to close. However, the browser would continue to run with no problem. Then today, it was acting really sluggish, for example: it wouldn't open on regular command and when it opened, it came with some random pop-up that I just closed out. Now, I've clicked on it numerous times and now it won't even open. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling it, but the problem persists. For now, I'm using firefox which determined some registry errors. I don't know if that has any connections with why IE is screwed up. But I want to know whats going on with my IE browser.

version I'm currently using: windows XP (home)

Hello guys.

Does anybody know a way to restore the default registry parts for your CD, DVD, Blu Ray Drive in Windows 7? a windows tool perhaps that will restore this part or restore the default Blu Ray drive Filters or etc.

I was mucking about with the windows 7 registry that deals with your Bluray drive and now Windows 7 explorer won't open any of my Blu Ray Discs. Not even retail ones open now when they did before.

Windows blu ray players are still able to play them fine but they won't open within explorer anymore because of whatever I done.

I have tried removing my Bluray drive from the Device Manager and let windows reinstall it again but this doesn't fix the problem.

Thanks a lot for your help.

A:Help: Windows 7 explorer won't open any of my Blu Ray Discs

Nevermind, I found the problem.

Originally I found a grayed out driver in the Device Manager under Non-Plug and play Drivers called Fs_Rec that didn't seem to be getting used and windows saying something about the device is not connected, not attached and (Code 45)

I did a search but could not find any information on what this driver is for and so I remove all registry entries for this driver so it would no longer display in the Non-Plug and play Drivers section or load up.

I have now discovered, removing this driver even though windows doesn't seem to use it, will screw up the windows from being able to open Blu Ray Drive contents within the windows explorer.

I have restored the registry entries for the Fs_Rec driver and now Windows 7 explorer opens my Blu Ray Discs without problems again.

Starting as of yesterday, my windows explorer will not stay open. Playing some games over a LAN with some friends, all of our firewall settings were pretty relaxed, which leads me to believe that this is a virus of some sort and that is how/when it snuck in.
Windows will boot normally. I can then log on and the explorer will start. However, it will close itself right after this. Sometimes it will restart it self a few times, but eventually it will stop restarting until i go into the task manager and run the process myself. I generally have between 5-20 seconds before something kills the process. Running Spybot and a Comodo Antivirus did not solve any problems, albeit the fact a few viruses, mostly pretty harmless pieces of adware, were found.
After this I ran msconfig through the task manager and checked the startup. I unchecked a few unfamiliar tasks, restarted, but the problem is still here. I finally booted in safe mode, and the explorer will not persist there either. In brevity, I cannot get the explorer to stick under any circumstances.

I can browse all files including system and hidden,

Aside from a few minor program installation side effects-

The issue is on all acounts, restricted and admin..

I have full access to the registry and can run programs from the desktop-

Hello, my computer was running just fine until earlier today when I was unable to open any folder using windows explorer. When I attempted to do so, opening my documents, my computer loaded for 5-10 seconds, then an error message appeared, saying that windows explorer had encountered a problem and needed to close. Then my desktop was refreshed, and it was as if nothing at happened, my documents was still unopened. After looking through many threads I tried using Hijack This, which ran a scan on my computer. Here is the log from the scan and if anyone could please help me that would be great!

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer. After we are finished with your log file and verified that it's clean, you may turn it back on and create a new restore point.

From time to time I want to open two instances of Windows Explorer at the same time so that I can then have them run side-by-side in order to , say, copy a file from one to the other by dragging and dropping. I have the Windows Explorer icon locked to the Taskbar which enables me to quickly launch one app of W.E. but if I now click this icon a second time W.E. closes. In order to open a second W.E. and have it run simultaneously with the first one I have to go to Start>Accessories and there click the W.E icon.
Is there a more efficient way to have both apps of W.E launched so that they run simultaneously?

For the last few weeks when I try to go to usual websites, I frequently get " Windows Internet Explorer cannot open web page". If you run the diagnostic that pops up, it can't find anything. Type in the desired location a second time, and thre's about a 75% chance it will open. The frequency of this has increased to the point of it happening nearly every time I change pages on the same site : E-bay, Bank of America; Exxon.
I don't have any "children's controls" in effect. [ no children ] Avira, Superantispy ware,Malware bytes, find nothing. I'm putting my "keepers" on a MY Book Elite, as I get time, in order to do a completely Clean Install of Windows 7, Ultimate, 32 bit, which is what I clean installed in January.
For now, I'd like to get it running for an hour at a time without these twice a minute notices. I looked into uninstalling Internet Explorer 8, and reinstalling it, but the microsoft site won't let me.
I keep Avira current, the others mentioned, plus Spyware blaster. My hard drive is probably 80% unused or free of stuff. I'm no gamer, or heavy user.
Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thank you.

A:Windows Internet Explorer cannot open

You might want to click your TOOLS tab at top right of IE.

Choose INTERNET OPTIONS then ADVANCE then near bottom you will see RESET, this resets IE back to default.

You may also want to check your ADD-ONs and see if you have too many which are causing you any issues you will find that option under the PROGRAMS tab and its the second button down called manage add-ons.

Make sure your SECURITY zones are not set too high for internet.

Hope this helps.

Kind regards.

Hello everyone. My problem is that I can't open DVD drive in Windows Explorer, no matter how I try to do it.

Things I've tried so far that are not working:double-clicking the drive in Computer
right-clicking the drive, testing all of the respective options (open, open in new window etc.)
typing the path directly to the address bar - both path to the drive itself and path of folders that exist on the disc
creating a shortcut to drive/disc contents
running explorer from the command line with drive path as argument

Things that actually work:displaying drive in Computer view
displaying proper disc information (icon, volume name, size etc.)
burning DVDs that work perfectly fine on other computers
accessing disc from the command line - it allows to perform all file system operations as if there was no problem at all

I have found similar thread that describes my problem (link) and the workaround mentioned there (uninstalling then installing device driver) works for me too, but only for short time.

This issue bugs me ever since I've installed Windows 7 RC and this forum seems to be my last hope - please, don't let me down ;)

A:Windows 7 RC 64 bit - can't open DVD drive in explorer

If the fix that you've mentioned works for a short time - then it's likely that some other program (most likely a disk burning program) is changing it back to the settings that it wants. I'd uninstall all disk burning software to see if that helps.

Hello everyone,

This is my first post. As you will probably find out, I'm not the most computer savvy, but I have a problem with my computer. Everytime I try to open Internet Explorer to access the internet, a message comes up that says "This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If problem continues, contact vendor." I contacted my internet provider and they told me it was a problem with the windows environment that runs Explorer, and that I need to have someone "fix" it or have Windows reloaded.

Any thoughts? How do I fix this? Is it something I can do myself?

Thanks in advance,
Burm

A:Windows 95 won't open Internet Explorer

The first thing to do is press the "details" button in your error message and tell us what it says exactly.
We need the AppName and the ModName displayed there.

And please do this:

Go to http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads.php#det , and download 'Hijack This!'.
Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log somewhere, and please show us its contents.

Most of what it lists will be harmless, so don't fix anything yet.

Whenever I try and access Windows Explorer nothing happens. It lights up for a bit like it has been selected but the window never actually opens. Task Manager indicates that Windows Explorer never actually opened. I need an answer to my problem soon because it is essential that I am able to manage my computers files.

A:Windows Explorer doesn't open

I'd try running explorer from task manager. In task manger window, click File > New Task (Run) and type explorer.exe

If that doesn't work, try it in safe mode.

Hey all,

I have a perplexing problem with Windows XP. Everytime I boot-up and login windows explorer is open displaying My Documents. I can't see anything in Msconfig/ Startup that explains it, and windows explorer is not set to "restore previous folder at logon" in the folder options. I've not found any viruses, spyware or malware so I'm at a loss of what else to do.

Prior to this I had an svchost.exe error which popped up every time I booted up. After some research I fixed it by doing a manual update of windows. Don't know if that might be related. Otherwise I can't think of any events that triggered it - no other programs installed, no hardware changes etc.

If the hardware info is of any use the pc is a self build - Athlon 64 3000, Gigabyte GA-K8NS pro, Geforce 6600 and 2.5 Gig ram.

Any ideas?

I have no virus or spyware (nothing my programs have picked up)

There are some programs I can use tho such as firefox internet explorer and photoshop...

any idea whats going on?

A:cant open .exe files as well as windows explorer

I had i problem like that once and it was due to my keyboard
when your keyboard is dirty it send's all sorts of hortkeys to the OS
to close programs, open program etc...
and the other thing is that it can be a virus
i had this virus called Jeefo. It runs as a proccess and currupts exe files
you can read more about it here http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.jeefo.html

I know how to get the Windows Explorer shortcut to open with its
focus on the C: drive by changing the target path on a Win98 pc.
I don't know what to change in XP Pro.
I want Explorer to open with its focus on my C: drive and expanded.
Currently the shortcut for explorer from Start>Programs>Accessories
looks like this.
Target: %SystemRoot%\explorer.exe
Start in: %HOMEDRIVE%%HOMEPATH%
It opens with the focus on My Documents.
I plan on just creating a new shortcut on the desktop then dragging
it to my quick launch. I use explorer alot and find it handy to have it
in my quick launch.
What should the Target: and Start in: be to open at C: ?
I just installed xp pro yesterday and haven't learn all the tweaks yet.
Thanks in advance.

A:Open Windows Explorer at C: not My Documents

I just figured it out.
This goes in the Target: field
%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /n,/e,C:\

I am using Windows 7 Ultimate x64 on a new computer. I can no longer open documents from Window Explorer, as I used to be able to do in XP. Also, everytime I try to open any of the office programs (and some others as well) I get a box that asks me if I want to allow that program to make changes to my computer. I never used to get that in XP. I am the only person using this computer and I believe that I set it up so that I have administrative privileges on everything. So I assume that I have not set some permission correctly. Could someone give me some advice on how to do this. All these warnings and questions are annoying.

A:Cannot Open Docs from Windows Explorer

" everytime I try to open any of the office programs (and some others as well) I get a box that asks me if I want to allow that program to make changes to my computer."

This is User Account Control trying to secure your computer from incoming connections/applications . You can edit these settings to your liking by clicking the windows button, and typing user account control in the index search box. From there edit the settings of 'User Account Control' to your liking of XP, which would mean you need to turn it off basically. This method is not deemed secure, but will satisfy you, it did me

Hi

Back in January my computer kept shutting down randomly and when I would restart it it would shut down again even after launching the repair option upon reboot. Sometimes a blue screen would pop up saying system failure or something along those lines. But I would leave it alone for the night and the next day it would turn on fine. It did this every once in awhile but I didn't know what to do about it so I ignored it because it would work the next day.

Two nights ago it performed this same thing and I turned off my computer so I could do it the next day. Yesterday I got in but everything was running extremely slow and kept freezing. A message kept popping up saying that windows explorer was restarting everytime I tried to perform a task. I restarted my computer several times and the same things occurred. I tried to get into my control panel but it would freeze and not let me. It wont let me get into any folders.

I tried safe mode and debugging mode and I still couldn't open anything and windows explorer kept restarting. McAfee it says is turned off but I never turned it off and can't get into it
to turn it on.

Eventually last night I managed to get into malware bytes and perform a quick scan which took an hour and no infected files came up.

The computer isn't even a year old and has 4gb of ram on it. I can't get into anything. Please help.

Hi there.
In our company a user with a Win8 OS can open PDF files directly from a folder on a FTP server while a user with Win7 OS can not. The Win7 computer tries to open them always in Internet Explorer no matter what I do.

I had to install Webdrive, to fix this problem. But, this software is a demo with 20 days trial period.

The Win8 computer is manually installed from scratch while the Win7 is deployed using SCCM with a custom image. The GPO is the same for both of them as far as I know.

My questions is: Does Win7 has difficulties with opening PDF files directly from FTP server or is Win8 built a bit different on that area? Anyone knows this?

Grateful for any help.

I have a user that can open a spread sheet from Excel but will not open from Windows explorer. The error is it can not find the file, yet when i compare the file address they are the same. I have looked for updates and found none and even reinstalled Office small business 2007, the version the user is currently using. All help would be greatly needed.

A:Windows Explorer not open spreadsheets

It's possible that the file association has been lost or broken. Try opening Explorer and go to Tools/Folder Options. Select the "File Types" tab and scroll to the xls file extension (assuming that's the kind of file you're trying to open. I forget what the file extension is for 2007, but scroll to that one if necessary). Does it say Opens With Microsoft Excel below the list of extensions? If not, you can change it. Let us know if that works.

Also, I just reread your message and realized the error message isn't what you would normally see with a broken file association. Can you actually navigate to the file through Windows Explorer, but it just doesn't open? Or are you typing the file location in the address bar?

Hi, I initially posted this in the wrong forum (whoops!)

I have been attacked by what appears to be lots of stuff all in one go.
I have run Adaware, Sbybot, Spysweeper, Symantec antivirus, Registry mechanic, Panda and CW shredder.

The problem I am left with is that in normal mode, I cannot run My Computer or Windows Explorer. Both of these run in Safe Mode.

It's a BIOS problem. If you see an option to load defaults, use that one and save.

Hello,

I'm new to these forums, so I'm sorry if this is the wrong section. I have recently experienced some major problems with my computer today. First of all. when I start up my computer, the first thing I notice is that I can not click on the start menu to open it. I even tried right clicking, and it's like my right clicking is disabled. I can't right click on anything as a matter of fact, and it's extremely frustrating. No programs are clickable on my desk top, and I keep getting this never ending loading circle on everything my mouse hovers over. The only reason I was able to get on Firefox is because my Windows Live Messenger starts automatically, and I had a friend link me here for tech support. My computer was working fine last night and was running great. I am honestly not sure what happened, and somehow my firewall and antivirus protection got turned off recently. The thing that is really frustrating is I cannot run any scans or turn my virus protection back on, because I cannot open it. I even tried ctrl + alt + delete to open Windows Task Manager, and it opens, but when I try doing anything in the task manager, the annoying never ending loading circle appears again.. I will leave my computer on for hours and eventually I just shut it off. Any help is greatly appreciated. I use Vista btw.

My friend using windows 7 is receiving a message from windows each time she starts her computer. I am writing the message below:
------------------------------------------------------------
Windows can't open this file:

File: tmph6954826019652599695.tmp

To open this file, Windows needs to know what program you want to use to open it. Windows can go online to look it up automatically, or you can manually select from a list of programs that are installed in your computer.

What do you want to do?
o Use the web service to find the correct program
o Select a program from a list of installed programs

--------------------------------------------------------------

She searched for this particular file in her PC but nothing came out. Can anybody help?

A:Windows tries to open a tmp file on each start

Hello

I'm wondering if there's a way to tell windows to open some links and files as soon as windows starts..

for exmaple, i would like to load 2 skype applications and open a website as soon as my computer opens.

Can i do that? if yes then how?

thanks.

A:open link on windows start up

You can set programs to open I MSCONFIG then go to the Startup tab.

Create batch program that will do as you need and then have that one batch program run when the PC starts.
