# Laptop stopped playing sound?

Q: Laptop stopped playing sound?

And it's not just the laptop speakers - it doesn't work when I put headphones in either.

I opened up audacity and as it was loading, all my sound that was playing cut out. I system restored my laptop and it was fixed, and thought it crashing with audacity was just a coincedence, so I reopened audacity. The sound stopped working again. I uninstalled audacity, that didn't work, so system restored it again but this time that didn't work either. I tried an even earlier date but it still didn't work.

Thanks x

p.s. i'm not really technical so I apoligize in advance, ty.

Hi Sarahbbb!

What's the model of your laptop? (It's usually on a sticker on the bottom side, something like "Dell Dimension L6203")

I have a soundblaster live soundcard. Periodically, the sound would stop in the middle of playing. I figured out that the card was loose so screwed the card in and the sound returned. But then stopped again. I tried putting the sound card in a different slot but still no sound. Any suggestions?

Hello
I am new here & need help with this one. A couple of days ago the sound in my pc failed. It was working fine before that. I tried the usual, installing the sound driver again but it did not work.

Now I can see the driver icon in the system tray & occasionally the volume control icon as well but when I click it, a message is displayed that there are no active mixers available. Also I use AIMP2 as my music player & it has been displaying this message "cannot initialize sound engine". My speakers work fine.

I am not sure but I think the problem is with the sound card. Any ideas??? PLEASE HELP .

Btw my sound card is built into the motherboard & the motherboard is about 4-5 yrs old. Here are the specs:

About four days ago as of the time of writing this my computer stopped playing sound after a restart with updates installed. That is actually not quite true. The volume mixer shows that it is playing sound, but no actual sound comes out of whatever device I plug in. Speakers don't work, headphones don't work. I know the devices themselves work as I have plugged them into other computers and they worked there, but on this specific computer no such luck. It is not muted. The drivers show that they are working properly. I've reinstalled the drivers anyway. I've set the default device to that of my speakers. I have updated everything from BIOS to Chipset.

After that I tried searching for some clue or advice on the internet to no avail. Then I tried the windows troubleshooter and Microsoft fixit tool. Neither could find anything wrong.

The computer came new out of the box with two sound card drivers installed. Which are IDT High Definition Audio CODEC and AMD High Definition Audio Device. Which are both under Sound, Video and game controllers in the device manager. Under Audio inputs and outputs it shows the following: Digitial Output (S/PDIF) (IDT High Definition Audio CODEC), Speakers/Headphones (IDT High Definition Audio CODEC ), and Stereo Mix (IDT High Definition Audio CODEC). It is the speakers/headphones I want to use as that is my default device. When I click on those the driver is listed as Audio Endpoint and that the device is working properly.

A:Computer stopped playing sound after update

First thing, check the Sound Panel, Playback section. Your "Speakers" should be set as the default audio playback device. If it has changed to some other device that could be the problem.

Your PC sound "card" (actually a chip on the motherboard) is the IDT High Definition Audio Codec. The AMD High Def is the audio for HDMI. Which is another issue, if you have an HDMI cable plugged in, Windows will automatically change the default audio playback device to the HDMI.

If the playback device is set properly to the "Speakers", try resetting the sound by uninstalling the IDT in the Device Manager (DO NOT also uninstall the drivers). Then restart the PC and when Windows starts it will reinstall the sound. If there were some Windows corruption with the sound this will fix it.

Found several similar reports over this and MS's Answers forums with no final resolution/fix to problem. Worse they are dated several years ago and nothing current.

I feel I need to emphasize one-time that this problem only concerns the Startup system sound that plays right after warm or cold boots when the system first arrives at the desktop and _only_ that sound. All other system and program sounds work okay.

Up to 1 or 2 months ago for a couple years now the Startup sound has been playing just fine--then I all of a sudden realized it was no longer playing at all. All other system and program sounds/audio play fine.

1. SFC finds nothing needing fixing.
2. Startup sound check box in Sounds tab is and has always been checked though I do not recall when MS made this a security issue protecting it.
3. Talked to nVIDIA and learned nothing new.
4. Talked to Crucial and learned nothing new.
5. Talked to MS and learned nothing new. They are unaware of problem...even though for some it is a couple years old. MS's best recommendation though, which I might still try at some point because "what could possibly go wrong?" is to run an In-Place Upgrade on Windows 7 which supposedly will restore the OS leaving my programs/data and some customizations(?) in tact.
6. Actual Startup sound wave file apparently resides inside a .dll which iirc is threaded here in sevenforums.
7. I also looked through the Registry searching for "startupsound" and found string i... Read more

After installing it I configured windows 8 pro build 9200 to play at the start up.
It worked. However after activating the op. sistem it no longer plays the start up sound (any idea ?).
Another thing I have no idea is why Microsoft supressed the log off sound.
Who had the brilliant idea to discontinue the log off sound ?
There should be a tweak to bring it back.

I have a brand new Dell Inspiron 15 3000 series that whenever I wake it up from sleep, the sound stops working. Reboot, sound is fine. Sleep/resume, sound stops working. If I go to "Sound" in the control panel while mp3s are playing, I can see the meter moving. There just isn't any sound coming out of my laptop speakers.

Realtek audio, latest drivers. Volume has not been muted due to use of FN keys. System tray audio mixer has the same volume level that worked well before I put the laptop to sleep.

Hey all,

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-FW. At first, the only problem I had was no bass. I could hear the tremble fine, but no bass at all. I started clicking around under some sound settings and no I have no music at all however, when I "test" the speakers, I hear the test noise going off.

How do I fix this? Thanks!

Hello. I've posted this on a couple different message boards to try to get some help and so far I haven't gotten any replies. Hopefully you guys can help. Here we go:

HP Pavilion DV7 1183cl, Windows 7 x32, Sound only playing out of subwoofer:

Yesterday (5/13/2011), Windows told me I needed to install some critical updates. I installed them and restarted. When I restarted, I noticed that the mute button on my touchbar was red and wouldn't turn back to the on color.

I logged into Windows and tried playing some Youtube videos and stuff to see if the sound was working. It turns out it was, but the sound was only coming out of the subwoofer on the bottom of the laptop and sounded TERRIBLE. When I plug in my headphones it sounds fine except the volume doesn't go as loud as it did before. Pressing the mute button does mute the sound, but it still stays red no matter what.

So I tried resotring my system back to a point when the speakers were working to see if it was a hardware problem, and it turns out it's not. When I restore to an earlier point, the speakers work fine. The problem, however, is for some stupid reason I can't login at the restore point. I just know the speakers work because the error sound comes out of the Altec Lansings on the front, and the mute button actually changes colors.

Hello. I have a Toshiba l505-s  5988   that I recently upgraded from windows 8 to windows 10 with no issues. Everything has worked fine. Suddenly yesterday my sound stopped working. The sound bars show there's sound playing, but there isn't. No it isnt muted anywhere. I have ran Microsoft's troubleshooter, but it finds no problem. I tried system restoring, but it still didn't fix it. I have uninstalled all audio drivers (2 drivers under AUDIO- microphone, speakers + 1 alternate "stereo mix"; 1 under SOUND/VIDEO; 1 under SYSTEM DEVICES "High Def Audio Controller") & tried even installing them straight from Toshiba's support site & from Realteks support site. By default it shows 1component under " playback", 2 components under " recording" so I've tried every combination of defaults & which is disabled, and only get the same result. I've had this same odd thing happen 1 other time a few years ago with I think my old hp laptop (possibly this one instead), and I know I tried so many billion of weird things that I do not remember at all what fixed it. Could anybody PLEASE help?

P.S. Headphone jack has never worked so I cannot try it. Also laptop stays stationary so nothing internal should have came loose

I bought the plantronics .Audio 335 studio headphones, but when I plugged them in, it screwed up my sound. My compute'rs sound is now playing through both the headphones AND the laptop speakers. After unplugging it and trying again a couple times, I gave up and decided to just use my old headphones.

Except for the sound still played through both the headphones and laptop speakers.

Distraught, I restarted my computer. When that didn't work, I restored my system to a point I made yesterday. Still no luck. I've been scrounging google for a few hours now, and nothing is helping. Any ideas? I REFUSE to refresh my system and reinstall all of my programs again.

This is urgent. I'm a freelance musician and require headphones for my work.

Hi everyone,

4 months ago freezing problems started with my laptop and running chkdsk and hdd regenator repaired bad sectors and this relieved my pc health making it better than before, but not totally sufficient.

However in the past 2 months I am suffering from a new set of freezing issues which occur so often and i could not manage to solve or get any improvement. Basically, it happens
1)every 20-40mins and freezing lasts about 5minutes. if I am playing a music video on a website, then the speaker would be forcing itself to play the music for less than a minute which would be heard as buzzing, and then it will stop.
2) Same type of freezing also occurs when a game is open while all browsers and music players are closed in the background.
3) In rare occasions no freezing occurs but skype crashes during a voice call giving an error related to shockwave. I believe this could be a related problem but not sure.

-graphics driver is updated to latest version and downgrading back to the older versions did not help
-no disk errors could be found using chkdsk and hdd regenarator scans/repairs
-cleaning cache using ccleaner, diskdefragmenting using popular softwares, or running popular computer care taker softwares did not help.
-windows 7 has the latest updates.

I have been having an issue recently with my Windows 8 HP laptop (i'm not too sure of the exact model at the moment) where it'll just stop playing videos (whether if streamed through the internet such as you tube or if played on the actual computer as a downloaded video) or the sound for said videos just won't play. The problem can usually be temporarily fixed by restarting my computer but it gets annoying to restart my computer constantly because a video is not playing or the sound is not working so I am trying to see if there is a permanent solution. Adobe flash player is up to date and the problem has been occurring before and after I updated flash player. Thanks to anyone who takes their time to read this a possibly attempt to help. If any more information is needed please do not be afraid to ask and thank you for helping.

A:Windows 8 HP laptop suddenly stops playing videos/sound

As the problem is both video and sound, this is more than just an "audio" problem (this forum section),

Any Flash type video/audio (such as YouTube) is related to the Flash player (and there are many reported similar problems).
A complete uninstall of the Flash Player, restart the PC and then a new install of the Flash player helps in some cases.

I just bought a laptop today and when I plugged in my headphones, a little squawk sound came out. Then whenever i play my music, a small squawk sound comes out and then the music starts playing. It's not continuous, just a sound and it's gone. I'm not annoyed by it or anything, but I am wondering if this is indicative of future problems.
Thanks!

So I recently opened my CPU because it was lagging and I thought maybe a little clean up might do the trick. So I softly brushed the drivers inside the CPU to get some dust off. However, when I turned on my PC, it seems that whenever I watch videos or play games, a loud crackling sound comes out from my speakers. I don't know what is causing this.

I have tried disabling my drivers (sound and display) but to no avail. However, if I mute the volume on my sound driver, the sound disappears. Which lead me to the conclusion that it might be a conflict of sound and display.

Since the problem only occured when I opened my CPU and cleaned it, it might also be a wiring problem or something.

Can someone help me on this?

Hi

I've been stuggling with this for a few hours now and am at the end of my wits..

I've got two audio devices that I would like to link to my PC at once.
I've got one plug connected to the back panel, and one to the front. But one always cuts off the other. In my sound devices, the system registers them both as: "speakers, VIA High Definition Audio, Standard device"

Is there any way that I can connect them both at once, and still have both of them outputting audio?

I hope the internet will save the day!

If you use realtek,

Otherwise You're pretty much screwed, only other way is to use Virtual audio cable, but you'd have to set it up every time you booted (and it costs 20\$)

I've posted this issue before on numerous support fourms, and none of them or I could figure out this issue. It's been driving me nuts.

A couple months ago I cleaned my computer (plugged everything out, cleaned the area/computer, etc.) when I put everything back together and booted up, I had no sound, but the tray icon indicated sound was indeed going through. As far as I knew nothing had been changed. I made sure everything was plugged in correctly, reinstalled the drivers, made sure I didn't click something off I shouldn't have, but still nothing. But then I plugged in headphones into the tower headphone jack, and boom I had sound. I was as surprised as everyone else. Someone suggested then, to rule out a hardware issue, that I download Ubuntu and see if the sound problem occurs there. It didn't, I had sound coming out of my speakers.

I would hate to re-install Win, as I've gone without doing so for five years. But if it came down to it, it's whatever.

I use the on-board sound from my MB, as I've learned over the years sound cards are a thing of the past. But perhaps I could reattach the old one I have? It's sadly over 10 years old however, I don't know if it would be worth trying. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Major cudos if we're able to figure this out once and for all. Good luck

However, if I want to watch a video on youtube or anywhere else online, the sound works. There's got to be a simple solution to this but I can't seem to find it. Any help? I've been putting up with this for a long time and I'd really like to finally get it sorted out.
Oh and before you ask, the media players are not muted.

Been having major issues playing GTA IV.

First, the sound kept getting cut during gaming. When I exited the game, there was no sound in Windows either. I had to reboot to get sound but after a couple of minutes, the sound cut off again and I wasn't even gaming then. Video playback became really laggy (YouTube played videos as if in slow motion) and there was no sound.

I had to reboot the PC several times. Unisntalled sound card (through Device Manager) and then reinstalled it as well as the latest drivers. Still had same issue when I tried playing GTA IV.

Today, I got consecutive BSODs while playing GTA IV. I've had several issues with GTA IV like missing textures, no sound, freezing (at loading screens), CTD (crash to desktop) etc. Tried reinstalling the game several times from scratch and even tried different hard drive but none of them work(ed).

I'm playing GTA IV heavily modded (Gionight ENB mod with several custom cars/weapons etc.) but my computer is a beast and it should be able to handle it easily.

My specs:

CPU: i7 990X
Mainboard: Asus P6T7 WS Supercomputer
Memory: 12GB Corsair Domintar 1600MHz
Hard Drive: 32GB SLC SSD x2 (RAID-0)
Video: EVGA GTX-580 3GB Tri-SLI
Sound: Creative SoundBlaster X-Fi Titanium HD
Power Supply: PC Power & Cooling 1200W
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1

The first BSOD was STOP code 0x124 and that was with stock clocks for the GPU. The second BSOD was STOP code 0x1000007e and that was with GPUs OC'd to 850MHz.

I have a new PC, the ones i used to burn off my old one would play on any DVD player I had. But when i burn using my New PC it will only play on a computer, I tried it on my friends xbox 360 and it played.
So i was thinking my TV-DVD player is the problem, but then it still plays the old things that i've burned.
I use convertxtodvd to burn the mkv files i have on my computer, I use Nero Recode 2 to copy existing DVD's into copy's.
They all work on the xbox and my PC.

It's not that i desperately need my TV-DVD player to play these things, but if i'm building a DVD collection, i want to know it will play on any DVD player that supports copies. Otherwise I end up with half a collection that will will only play on certain devices and not others that are supposed to support copies.

Thanks.

My (ancient) Packard Bell PC (Windows XP home) has suddenly stopped playing DVDs.
Device Manager gives the '!' in a yellow circle for "H + H DVD-ROM DVD-41SD SCSI CdRom Device" x3 and HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4320B.
When I troubleshoot it tells me to uninstall and then Add New Hardware. I've tried this several times but each time I get this message:
"Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)"
I saw an old thread in which someone was able to fix a similar problem by creating a text file to fix the CD Registry. Might this work for me?

Well, i have 5.1 creativ speakers got about 2 years back. they worked fine with wxp but when i upgraded to wvista and w7 all hell broke loose. at a point in time in vista i got the rear speakers to work. when i upgraded to w7, i also got the rear speakers to work eventually. i now have a new motherboard with shitty drivers and can't get the rear speakers to work. in the tests they work but when i play music, watch movies anything nothing comes out of the front centre or rear speakers. any help guiz?

p.s. the drivers my mobo uses are VIA HD Audio deck. i've tried uninstall all sound drivers and reinstalling but to no aveil
p.s. also at one point in time few days ago everything was working but the next day the rears just stopped...

A:5.1 Speakers rear and mid sound not playing any sound apart from test

did all the speakers sound when test in via hd audio deck or windows 7 audio control panel?

if yes, most likely you will need to enable the 'upmix' feature of VIA. I'm not sure what is it called, but in Realtek it is called Realtek Speaker Fill or Dolby ProLogic IIx. If there isn't any, you may want to try Channel Mixer for foobar2000.

Hi there,
After installing SP2 on Win XP Pro my abbility to play music CD has gone. MP3 and webb radio work. With SP1 everything worked perfectly.

Musicmatch hangs totally when playing CD and Mediaplayer continues to respond but after one or two tracks the sounds disappears. When restarting Windows after such a problem I don't hear the normal Windows shutdown "song" but a short "ick"...

Have re-installed Musicmatch a number of times as well as CD-drive and soundcard drevice drivers.

Any idea?

I got the following hw and OS
Quite old Dell XPS T600r with Intel Pentium III, 600MHz and 384MB RAM
CD-ROM-drives:
LG CD-ROM CRD-8480C (as D)
SONY CD-RW CRX140E (as E)
Soundcard Turtle Beach Montego II (with standard Aureal 8830 device drivers since soundcard not supported any longer)

A:Playing CD stopped working after XP SP2 upgrade

You didn't open your case at all did yoU?

I know lots of cd-roms come with a cable that connects to the sound card for direct audio, but if you didn't open your case or move it significantly this shouldn't be your problem.

Try going into your device manager and seeing if the cd-rom is still installed correctly. Perhaps SP2 messed it up (if so reinstall the driver)

Hi All

I was running MP9 and a few days ago it refused to play avi's recorded by my digital camera. It will play avi's fromother sources, DVD's etc but not my camera avi's. It playe dthem perfectly until a few days ago.

Same with PowerDVD. It will play everything, no problem, except for these few avi's.

I downloaded and ran GSpot over the suspect avi's to see if there was a codec problem but they all rendered OK and GSpot said they should play OK with the existing setup. Finally I uninstalled MP9 and installed MP10 but there is no change.

The error message I get on MP is "Unknown Error" with a code. Not surprisingly M'soft don't provide much assistance. I see from this and other forums that MP suddenly refusing to play avi's isn't at all uncommon. Can someone please offer suggestions on how/why and how I go about fixing this.

Thanks very much.

A:Media Player stopped playing some AVI's

Try uninstalling and reinstalling the camera software. A codec may have been installed by that installation. Anything unusual in the right-click properties of those files?

A general-purpose codec that will play most avi's is the DirectShow ffdshow:

I was going through unnecessary files on my computer, and I deleted some Apple related files that I thought I didn't need. Quicktime stopped working, so I had to reinstall it. Since I'm using Windows XP the newest version won't work, so I had to download an older version. I'm not sure what version I had before I messed it up, I think it was 7.3.0. So I downloaded that, and now it won't play files smoothly that it had played smoothly before I uninstalled it. My settings are the same as far as I can tell.

The title pretty much says it all - except it seems to only happen when I'm on Instagram. I've upgraded to the latest version of flash. Could it be video card related? I have other display issues with this computer.

Edit: it's not just Instagram, it's also Vine. I don't spend much time on social feeds, so it's challenging to track which sites seem to be most affected by this problem, which only manifested within the last month. I thought it might be a bad flash update, but as noted, I've got the most current version.

I've removed Magic ISO and reinstalled and no go. I've tried the microsoft mr fixit and no luck and I've also looked in the registry for upper filter fix and I do not see that listed in the reg any suggestions would be great. Suddenly I can no longer watch movies. Games play, cds play, audio fine. But I put in a movie and it's like there's no disc here. We've watched movies on it for over a year, so I checked multiple movies that once worked. I've followed the troubleshooting, tried to update driver. The wizard could find no better driver than what is already being used. I DO NOT get an error message. I just don't get anything to show up either under My Computer or in Media Center or Media player. This stumps me. I read somewhere "Security Update for Windows Media Player 6.4 (KB925398)" was a problem but I even went to add/remove programs and couldn't find that particular update, so I couldn't uninstall that. I switched OS to Ubuntu for about a week, LoL didn't run well in Ubuntu so I reinstalled windows 8. When i open playback devices all I have is NVIDIA HDMI Output (port 0) and (port 1), both of which show unplugged and disabled. I have disabled and disconnected devices set to show, but those are all that show. I have reinstalled drivers, reinstalled windows, downloaded Realtek, enabled onboard audio in BIOS, but nothing has fixed the problem so far. When I boot into Ubuntu via USB, the audio works fine.

I've not long had Vista (Home Premium) and the windows media player that came with it used to play the .ts files that I'd exported from my digibox hard drive. Then - for apparently no reason - Media Player decided that it was no longer going to open the files, not even the ones that it had opened previously. It came up with the cood1199 error, but I don't understand why it's stopped playing them as it used to. It's infuriating. I don't want to have to download another program to play them when Media Player should - as it *did* - play them. Is there anything that I can do to get it to play what it used to play?

Have you tried a system restore back to when you know this worked or is this to far in the past? Have you tried to play the files with something like Realplayer. I know that you want to use WMP long term but this would confirm that it is a WMP issue.

Every time I try to play music in Windows Media Player no sound comes out of my speakers. I'm not sure if its just Media Player, but I'm fairly sure it's not just Media Player.

When this first started, simply turning the volume up a notch made sound come out. But the sound would stop after a minute or so. Also, it has been making my computer freeze up frequently. I've tried playing music on websites like playlist.com and my computer locks up.

This just started happening today. I looked for hardware conflicts and found none. The speakers work fine. I believe it must be some sort of Malware.

Hello! I have a small issue. Basically, I have a Compaq desktop for about five years now. I've never had a problem with my computer before until my speakers stopped working. My computer has been soundless for two months until today when i finally purchased some speakers. I followed the instructions on how to set it up to a tee. I turned on the subwoofer and find that I still cannot hear anything. I restarted and turn off my computer twice and reconnect the sound system twice and still no sound. I just don't know what to do at this point. I'm hoping I'm missing something small and was hoping you could help me figure it out.

A:Can't hear sound through headphones, but it says sound is playing?

Not knowing what you did, all we can do is guess and try to help you.

Not sure if System Restore (back to an available restore date that is before whatever you did) will help or not, but one option to try.

Uninstalling/reinstalling the RealTek will probably do it. Actually just installing the latest RealTek will first uninstall the existing, have you restart the PC (Important step do not bypass this) and then will do a new install.

Hello there guys, I am having a real problem with my Windows Media Player 11 playing .avi files.

My digital camera records videos and they have played on my machine with WMP no problem at all until yesterday. When I click on the file to play it it says "Window Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file. For additional assitance, click Web Help."

I have had had a good around and I can't resolve this problem. The problem seems to have occured since I installed DivX Player, Codec etc.. (the installer package). Since then I have tried uninstalling it to go back to how it was and also tried doing a system restore to the point before but still the same problem.

Don't know what to do but this problem also effect Windows movie maker, it won't player the avi files in there either, please help.

A:Windows Explorer has stopped working when playing movie DVD

Good Evening Folks:

I am having a problem with Windows Explorer and WMP11. I have the original King Kong movie that I downloaded and burned over a year ago. Every so often I drag it out just for the enjoyment of watching it again. This time, however, when I attempt to play it I get a message telling me that WMP11 has stopped working. If I try to open the files on the disk the message tells me that Windows Explorer has stopped working and will have to restart.
When I first started to dig into this problem I was because I was getting a message telling me that the DEP had stopped working. That has been cured by disabling DEP, but now it is Windows Explorer that stops working. There are also a few other glitches that have appeared such as a language bar that appears on the screen whenever the UAC window opens and an internet connection that will not run in protected mode even though that function is enabled. I have scoured the net and have seen a number of people who associate this problem with the installation of Vista SP2? If this is the case I will dump SP2 even if it means reinstalling the O/S.
I'm running a 32 bit Vista Home Premium O/S.
Any comments will be greatly appreciated.

So I get TDR and BSOD whenever I play a graphically intensive game. Doesn't have to be much, though. I tried to play Mafia 2 and I got TDR. The same with Dishonored, CS:GO, and a whole mess of other games.
I've already set the PhysX to my graphics card rather than auto, so if you were going to say that, don't.

Note: My GTX 660 is by OC'd by Gigabyte, thought I'd point that out.

A:BSOD/TDR playing Far Cry 3, display driver stopped working.

Erm, this doesn't make sense. You have a Geforce card, so why do I see ATI drivers also loaded? You may wanna do some cleanup of your drivers to ensure you don't have any conflicts. A good way to see loaded drivers is using Autoruns. Don't use it to remove drivers, but to check a list of those intended to load at Windows startup. Also good is to check Programs & Features on control panel and uninstall unnecessary items.

Otherwise, I don't have good data on this. One of the 3 crashdumps present did report that the TDR timeout was caused by insufficient resources to complete a DirectX API call, but I can't ascertain how this happened from just a minidump. Try running Driver Verifier and provide us new crashdumps.

EDIT: I just noticed the ATI crash was from back in Oct, with two other crashdumps from Nov and December. Have you changed your video card recently? I assume you were also getting timeouts from the previous card?

I've had this problem since like 2 years and i havent been able to solve it, yes reinstalled OS more than 15 times, DDU drivers, reinstalled drivers, tried beta drivers, tried old driver, cleaned up the dust inside laptop, windowed, fullscreen game, disabled some services, disabled TDR on registry, delay TDR on registry (it just makes windows freeze for the time i put on the registry, example TdrDelay = 10 sec, windows freezes for 10 when TDR happens in dota), reduce dota 2 graphic settings, ccleaner, advanced systemcare, SFC/SCANNOW , verified files, (There was this time where i was messing with my pc trying to fix this issue where i thought ive fixed it because whenever the TDR happened dota 2 would freeze but it would run again like nothhing happened and i could still play but somehow then it didnt last long)

installed new version of dota 2 called reborn and for some reason it didnt crash for some 2 months and now whenever i play this new one it crashes the whole windows and i need to restart PC

There was a BSOD too where i disabled google chrome hardware acceleration or something like that and when i got to a page like dailymotion my computer froze and i had to restart.

The couple of thing i havent tried is Thermal paste because my laptop is very hard to open GPU wise. but i doubt thats the problem because the BSOD from dota started when i recently bought the Laptop like after 1 - 2 weeks

(Some stuff on the ZIP are in spanish, im from mexico)

A:BSOD playing Dota 2, driver stopped responding, etc .....

Please use the tool again, the zip file doesn't have any dump files.
Also, in your windows partition go to the folder windows. There you can find a folder called minidumps, it is the folder where the dump files are saved. Check if there are any dump files in that folder.

I've encountered a mysterious problem that has drastically affected my enjoyment of my computer. Please help if you can.

Starting yesterday, I noticed that most video files (about 90%) stopped playing correctly on my computer. This occurs whether the video is streaming from an internet source or played directly from a file on my hard drive.

The affected files are .avi, mpeg, mpg, wmv, asf

When played the files are slow and choppy and the sound is full of pops and cracks. Video files without sound and audio files seem unaffected.

This occurs when files are played through Windows Media Player (10) or RealPlayer (v.10). Quicktime Player appears to be unaffected. The same file will play fine if it has an extention QT can handle.

The files themselves have not been corrupted. I was able to prove this because I can play the very same files remotely with the same programs (WMP10 and RP10) from a second computer on my Home Network.
Also, files streamed from the internet are affected as well. For example if I try to watch a news video or a moive trailer the sound is significantly degraded when played through WMP or RealPlayer.

So, something has changed with my windows setup that is affecting the way the computer handles these files.

I had a virus issue that I dealt with by running many spyware and virus programs yesterday. I don't think it's related but I can't help but wonder

To fix the proble... Read more

I ran updates on 4/16 on both this desktop and a laptop. The laptop (Windows 7 Pro) had many more updates but is working fine. The desktop (W7 Home Premium) is having two main issues. I did not set a restore point but I wanted to ask the pros because it has been driving me nuts.

Youtube and Netflix will not play.
At first I thought it was firefox but it is in IE as well. I went through numerous steps in Firefox to try to get it work. I even tried installing the 64 bit version which did not fix it. (Currently it is uninstalled). Both players will load the video, it is buffering but only the first frames shows. If I try to skip ahead normally it locks up. If I go to you tube in IE right now, it will just freeze, possibly because I've uninstalled all flash now. But the issue before was the same, the video loads just not advance the frame. I did not do additional troubleshooting in IE as I haven't used it in years just was testing.

Next some programs will not load even though they execute. This does not coincide exactly with the updates as it started happening on the 19th.

For example, Steam will execute (from start menu) but it will not launch.
Also, my favorite game-- a short cut on the desktop-- will not launch. It will also not launch from the source on C:. It will flash a second of it's launcher and usually a screen immediately loads but it also just sits in the Processes screen. I tried launching as admin and disabling antivirus. The problem is, For no apparent reason all sound has stopped. No audio, No computer sounds nothing. I have not changed any settings, have downloaded / updated any programs. Speakers work fine, Sound card detected, no "x" or yellow. I have gone through all the obvious checks and all appear to be fine. I have had this problem before and i needed to go in to the system file to either change or remove a line, but can't remember what.
If anybody has any ideas I would very much appreciate there help

Right click one of your mp3's or a sound file then click Properties. Make sure the "Open with" program is the one you want to open music etc. It will then use that program for all your music files.

Hi,
I was listening to music on media player when midway through a track the song faded out within the space of a few seconds. The player was still playing, I just lost the sound. Ever since then, I have not been able to get any sound out of the computer, in media player or elsewhere.
Any ideas?

My computer and TV are linked by both HDMI and audio cables. Everything was working just fine for a long time, until, apparently, a Windows 7 automatic update. Now I get the picture, but no sound. There is no problem getting sound to the computer speakers, the TV works fine by itself, and I have established that there is nothing wrong with any of the TV's inputs. Windows says that everything on the computer end of things is functioning correctly. What could be wrong, and what can I do about it?

A:Sound to TV Has Stopped

Check the Control Panel/Hardware and Sound and finally the Sound Panel/Playback section. With HDMI connected, the HDMI audio should be set as the Default Playback device.

Usually, when an HDMI cable is connected Windows will detect that and automatically make the HDMI as the default playback device.

Not enough information in your "My System Specs" so I can't say what the problem is. Please fill in what your Video card is, at least.

Could any one please help, i have a computer with a winfast N15235 Motherboard, it has on board sound, and the sound has stopped working, i think it maybe the drivers that have been deleted or corrupted.

Could any one tell me how i check if it is the drivers that are the problem, and how i can tell which sound driver i need.

A:Sound stopped working

I have posted this problem in 5 forums, and not got one reply, i don't understand why, either way i found a fix, and thought i had better post it here for any one else who has the same problem. The fix is for missing drive icons in my computer, but it is the same error code as the one i was getting, and it has worked, i now have sound working as normal.

I have now got the problem that my computer hangs on shut down, and i don't know if this fix caused that problem, because i had tried other fix's as well before i re booted.

I hope this does helps others, and then i will feel as though i have repaid some of the kindness i have received here on this forum, in the past.

There were other fix's for other problems on this web page, but the name of that forum is on the page, and i don't know if its bad manners to post that web page, and i don't want to be disloyal to a brilliant forum that has helped me in the past, if its allowed and some one lets me know here, i will post that web page here later.

The fix is as below.

To solve this Code 39 error, follow these instructions:

NOTE: After removing these registry keys and rebooting, it may be necessary to reinstall any CD or DVD recording applications.

1) Close all open programs

2) Click on Start, Run, and type REGEDIT and press Enter

3) Click on the plus signs (+) next to the following folders

* HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
* SYSTEM
* CurrentControlSet
* Control
* Class

I had a long drawn out spyware problem a month ago. All is now well with my computer except the sound doesn't work.

I have a Dell XPS400 with Windows XP, SP3 and I use windows update and all my files are up to date.

My sound device is Sigmatel High Definition Audio CODEC. I have tried to update the driver which caused it not to work. The device rollback didn't work either so I did a system restore back to yesterday. The device now shows it is working but still no sound. (I have tried walking through the windows help to make sure that all my settings are correct)

I then went to Dell and downloaded their version of the driver but that appears to be the same one I have and it still doesn't work.

My spyware problem was truly awful and I even had to change a BIOS setting to get things back. I mention this because I wonder if that is the problem.

In Device Manager, are there any yellow question marks or exclamation points?

Also - if you still believe your computer might be infected - it wouldn't hurt to have our experts verify that your PC is actually clean of any kind of malware.

Since I don't know the root of the problem, I'll provide all that I can.

Around two or three days ago, my keyboard got messed up and stopped working. When I was messing around with the back of the tower to try to fix it, I somehow killed my sound off too. Eventually, I got a new keyboard, but after adjusting with the stuff on the back of the computer tower the sound still didn't work.

Since my sister's computer specs and mine are the same, I checked out the device manager on both of the PCs to see what was missing from mine. I found out that it was a "Realtek AC'97 Audio" listing. So of course, I google it up and download what I find. However, after installing it, it still doesn't work. It doesn't even show in the device manager! And to make matters more confusing, when I start up my computer, it says that I can press Shift+F10 to configure it. When I do that, a DOS-like menu pops up where I can change a few options but nothing I change will get the sound working.

When I go to Accessories --> Entertainment --> Volume Control, it says that there are no active mixer devices available.

I don't think it's related to viruses or spyware. I've scanned multiple times with TuneUp, Spybot, Ad-aware, Norton, and a few other programs. Nothing came up.

Here's my HiJackThis information:

I suddenly lost sound on my computer after running without problems for months.

I checked the system settings and my volume is turned up, but when I adjust it, all I get is a beep from the internal speaker. I ran a game that makes sound continuously and plugged a headset into the speaker jack on one of the speakers to see if anything is making it that far. I got a very weak signal, but I moved the mouse around and I was definitely hearing all the sounds the computer generates, not just the CD background music.

I am running Windows XP on a Gateway 700. I think the sound card is a Creative SB Audigy. I installed a CD-R a month ago, but have been running fine. I checked all the jacks and everything is plugged in correctly.

Any ideas?

Hi

Welcome to Seven Forums and Happy New Year
Have you tried reinstalling the drivers for your sound-card? It will help if you could rpovide more details about your hardware including the model, chipset etc?

If i remember correctly, devices marked with an "x" are those that have been disabled - have you tried enabling the device again and letting windows install the driver automatically?

Have a look at this SF tutorial - How to Install a Driver in Device Manager

Keep us posted on your progress and regards

Hi,

I have a quite odd problem. I have an Abit AB9 Pro mobo with a Realtek sound chip on it. Earlier today I rebooted my machine and when it came back up Windows told me I didn't have a sound card installed.

I went into device manager and I saw that under "Sound, video and game controllers" that there were 5 NVIDIA Sound devices listed with the exclamation point icon.

I then deleted all of them and had device manager re-scan for hardware changes. It then failed to properly install the drivers. I then rebooted and disabled the audio on the mobo , deleted the devices from device manager, rebooted enabled the audio & let it reinstall. Still nothing working, but now it does show "High definition audio device" instead of the NVIDIA device.

Any ideas on how I can go about fixing this? Thanks for all input!

Hello tech guy forums, I've just recently had a problem with my ASUS G50v laptop computer where the fan has been making some nasty grinding noises, and was looking like it might stop working. So I opened up the bottom of the computer and poked at the fan with a vacuum, trying to see if there was some dust I could remove. I made sure to not mess with any of the other parts of the computer, and it did not seem like there was much dust on the fan, so I just closed the computer up again. Looks like I need to replace the fan.

However, when I turned the comp back on, the time on the computer was way off, saying it was 2009 and 4 in the morning instead of 5 in the afternoon and 2010. Also, far more problematic, I now have no sound, despite the system telling me that my sound is working. I tried downloading the latest driver off ASUS' website, and installing it, but it did not fix my new problem of no sound. If anybody knows what might be going on here, I'd be very happy to hear from you.
Thanks

Edit: I should probably also mention that, when I click on the volume adjuster button at the bottom right of the start bar, if I have a song or something going it definitely recognizes that there SHOULD be sound because the little green bar is bouncing up and down. There just isn't any actually coming out. I have tried using the built in audio from my laptop as well as my brand new headset, neither of which get anything.

Hi,

I turned on my computer this morning, an hour or so after my brother was using it, only to notice the speakers green cable thing was plugged in the front of my computer, in the headphones slot. I thought 'that's strange'. Once logged on, I noticed my brother had left me a message on the PC saying the sound isn't working when plugged in the back, so he plugged it in the front instead.

Anyway, the sound isn't working in either slot. I've tried the speakers with my laptop and their working fine on that, so that rules out the speakers being the problem.

When I plug the speakers in and out of the back slot, the following application pops up on my desktop, with the message 'what device did you plug in?':

I've provided some screenshots extra below of the sound mixer etc., if there any help.

I was on Hulu today watching the latest Family Guy episode (on my Toshiba laptop) and the screen when black. Thinking it just went into sleep mode, I moved the mouse and the screen didnt come back but the sound of Family Guy was still going. I had to hold the power button to shut it down and when it rebooted, I had no sound. Ive checked all the sound levels and made sure that its not muted. And I also uninstalled and reinstalled the sound driver (even though it said that the device was working properly.) So what do I do now? Thanks

My system is WIN ME, Audio: Creative Labs Sound Blaster 64 PCI. I use sound infrequently but it has always worked. Now it does not, the speakers are good, they work on my linked computer and alwayd worked on the one that is now not working. I have tried many approaches, downloaded and installed new drivers, but receive a message, no audio devices, supplied, no speakers installed, Audie.exe code 137, code 28 etc. The DELL SUPPORT and SOLUTIONS are of no help, I have tried all of their troubleshooting methods without help.
Coincidentally, SYSTEM RESTORE no longer functions, so that option is no longer aavailable to me.
Is there any hope to solve this problem?

Hi there,

There is something strange going on on my Laptop (acer aspire 5741g). Just now when I turned my computer on the sound stopped working. I tried to reinstall all my drivers, but to no extent. Also when I start my computer, and error is given that ePowerTray had stopped working. Also the computer tells me that I'm not connected to the internet, but I am. My laptop also gives me 2 messages that I should turn on windows defender and download an anti-virus program (which I have).

I'm not sure if this is a virus problem or software, though, I highly doubt it's a software problem.

First time poster, so I will do what I can to follow the guidelines. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Problem: Two days ago I noticed that my sound began to sound really bad and was getting softer. At first I thought it was my speakers, so I put in a set of headphones. Same problem. I then put in a diffrent set, still bad. I then took out all sound equipment and tryed my on board (I have a laptop) speakers give it a go, thinking it could be just the outbound speaker connection. All this to no avail. It sounded as though my sound was coming from underwater it was muffled and staticy.

The following day the sound stopped working all together.

What I have tryed: The computer is not muted. I have checked all options on my comp for sound, from advanced ones, to the basic ones. I have tryed troubleshooting but that has come up with no avail (it was saying something abotu bios but I didn't want to tamper with them).

I have the feeling that my sound card has stopped working, but I wanted to come to you guys before i took any drastic measures.

I am running a Dell laptop with windows XP professional. Its about 1 1/2 years old. The soundcard is on board. If you need any other specs I would be more then happy to accomidate. Thank you in advance!!!

A:Sound Stopped Working

you may wanna check your device manager to see if they can detect and tell you the working status of your sound card.

The worst case scenario would be to change the sound card....to a better ones.

Hi, not sure if this is the right forum but hopefully I can get some help.
The sound on my PC stopped working about a week ago, had been working fine up until that point. Hadn't installed anything in at least the few weeks before it stopped.

I decided to re format the PC a few days later thinking that it would be fine, which initially it was, oh by the way, am running XP professional. Windows did all its updates as per normal and the sound stopped again.

Reinstalled the PC yet again to try and get to the bottom of things and this time went through things a bit more slowly. Did it's first lot of updates, was fine after those. That was yesterday that they updated. Tonight installed Service Pack 2 and thats when it has stopped.

In the Sound and Audio Devices section of the Control Panel it is saying there is no audio device installed, yet I had installed it via the CD that came with the motherboard. Soundmax sound on an ASUS k8v SE deluxe motherboard.

Does anyone know why something like this may have happened, any help would be greatly appreciated

A couple days ago, about halfway through listening to a song, the sound simply disappeared. I fiddled with the volume, tried youtube instead of iTunes, restarted my computer, tested my sound and unplugged my speakers before plugging them back in. Nothing changed.
I don't think it's my speakers, because when I turn the knob to turn them on, they make the customary crackle and the blue light appears. I tried plugging headphones into the front of my computer and they hummed, but didn't play sound either.
I checked out this thread: http://forums.techguy.org/windows-xp/757597-no-sound-computer-2.html
but none of my devices have a question mark or exclamation point over them.
Under 'sound, video and game controllers' these things are listed: Audio codecs, legacy audio drivers, legacy video capture devices, media control devices, realtek AC'97 Audio, sound blaster live! 24-bit, and video codecs.
I'm not really sure what any of those are (I got the computer third hand) except I believe that the realtek is the sound card?
I have an XP, version 5.1 and I'd really like to be able to listen to music again, so any help you could provide would be helpful. Thank you!

When i click the driver "details button" i get the message.
