Are saved "Network Places" secure?

Q: Are saved "Network Places" secure?

I added a "Network Place" to my (web site hosting) web drive.

I logged in once and now it saved the credentials. So now I access my web site folders through the icon that was created in Network Places.

So is this secure? Can someone use my profile (or my computer) to find my username/password? Is it at least encrypted? Where is it stored? The registry?

thanks

This is a question for information about why my networking problem finally was resolved.
I have four PC?s on my network; one Windows 7 and three Windows XP. The Windows 7 PC always sees all three of the other computers. However the Windows XP computers sometimes don?t see the other XP computers when I press ?My Network Places.? Quite by accident I discovered that if I press ?View Workgroup Computers? then ALL the other PC?s in the network DO show up. Furthermore, if I click through "View Workgroup Computers" and access/edit a file on one of the other computers, then this computer will ALSO show up in ?My Network Places.? This behavior seems to be quite consistent and works every time I have tried it. Apparently, this is a workaround to the long vexing problem of why my networked PC?s sometimes don?t show up under ?My Network Places.?

My question: why does ?View Workgroup Computers? apparently always show all the networked PC?s, when ?My Network Places? does so only intermittently or sometimes not at all?

Thanks for any response.

G'day all,

I am hoping someone may be able to tell me why my local folders appear under "The Internet" on one of our work computers rather than under "Local Network". We have four machines, 3 running XP Home and one running XP Pro. The front machine has XP Home on it and I cannot open any of the shared folders for this machine on any of the other three machines even though they all have the same workgroup name.

They are all connected via CAT5 cable and we have a Netcomm NB5 ADSL2 modem/router, a Netcomm V300 Telephone Adapter(VOIP)/modem and an 8 port switch in the boss's office. And the front computer's folder/s and drives that I have chosen to be shared are listed under "The Internet". Does anyone know why this is and how I would go about correcting it?

Thankyou for your help and time,

Aaron

Hi,

I'm running Windows XP Pro. I'm not sure if this is possible, but is there a way to combine the contents of "My Computer" and "My Network Places" into one icon? I know how to remove either icon (via TweakUI), but is it possible to, for example, have all of the links in "My Network Places" appear in "My Computer" or vice versa?

Running Windows XP Home Service Pack 2

It seems that what I'm trying to do should be simple. Yet I've literally been trying to do it for over a year. I stumbled upon this forum, so maybe you can make my dreams come true and actually give me a shared network *angels singing*.

Keep in mind, I once had a shared network and everything was fine. Then one day, it mysteriously stopped, and hasn't run since, even after hundreds (literally) of attempts to set it up again.

For the moment, all I want to do is have my computer (we'll call this computer, "Sony Laptop") appear in its own "My Network Places" window - not concerned with the other networked computer at the moment. I have tried "Set up a home or small office network" and "set up a wireless network for a home or small office" dozens of times, chosen every single combination possible, completed them, restarted, but "Sony Laptop" still never appears in "My Network Places." I cannot for the life of me understand it.

If that's all the info you need, please respond. If you want more observations, read below:

You need to look at the dependency list for each service. In the case of Computer Browser, it's Workstation and Server.

Since Workstation is failing, that's probably the place to start.

Do you have WKSSVC.DLL in C:\Windows\system32? That's the workstation service, and it appears to be the missing module. I'd first try copying that from the installation disk, if it's missing, and then register it too by:

Start, Run, regsvr32 wkssvc.dll

If you can't find the DLL, you can run sfc /scannow to restore missing files.

A shortcut may be to download the file from DLL Dump and register it as described above.

I am running a peer-to-peer LAN of Win XP Pro SP2 boxes. Over 35 of them in a particular workgroup. All static IP addresses.

All machines have File and Print Sharing set up and Windows Firewall turned off.

I have used "HP Install Network Printer Wizard" to install a couple of HP 2300's and a HP 2200d printer, each of which have JetDirect 615N cards installed. But my problem isn't with the installation and use of the printers. In fact, this software works fine and everyone prints happily.

Here's the catch: all machines using HP Install Network Printer Wizard mysteriously disappear from My Network Places (no matter what machine I use to look at My Network Places) after 20 minutes. If I reboot one of them, it's back for about 20 minutes, then gone.

Now, they're pingable and in fact you can find them using the Search button. But they're not visible, and to my staff, this is a major obstacle.

I have 8 boxes without the HP wizard, and they're visible on My Network Places 24/7.

Using a couple different boxes as guinea pigs, I can affirm that deleting the printers, uninstalling HP Install Network Printer Wizard and eliminating references to it in the registry does not reverse the situation and fix the problem. Ugh.

I can also affirm that disabling our Kaspersky Anti-Virus does not solve the "vanishing" problem.

A call to HP Support and subsequent discussion with their reps yielded no help, although they did get a good chu... Read more

OK there is a catch here you know how the printers after 20 min of no using them is going in stand by mode ... for some reason the network card is going in standby mode for the printer also if you try to print over the network you gonna see that the printer is going back visible.
Solution: There was a option in Network Monitor Devices for don't going on that "standby mode" check and see if this will help you.

So this morning I went to class with my Dell Latitude D630 laptop and connected to my schools wireless network with no problem.

I shut down and when I got home and started up, my CPU was stuck at 100% usage. I noticed this when I tried to open "My Network Places" since I normally switch to a cable connection at home and turn off the wireless. I did a McAfee virus scan and came up clean.

The only significant changes I can think of doing recently was converting my external Seagate drive from FAT32 to NTFS.

I had a small network up and running that I set up awhile back. I formatted & reloaded 2 of the machines (both running WinXP Home SP2). On the laptop, "My Network Places" shows it's shared folder and the "MSHome" network. The PC shows the network in "Create a network place" but doesn't see the shared folder.
Tried everything I can think of... cancelling and resetting the folder to share, adding another folder..., nothing.
Why doesn't my the shared folder appear in the "My Network Places" folder? Any suggestions?

Hi Lori,

This issue usually occurs on wireless network connections. I suggest that you turn off any security feature of wireless. Please click Start->Control Panel, double-click Network Connections, right click on the wireless adapter and select Properties. From there choose Wireless Networks, click on your wireless network name and choose properties. Under Network Authentication choose Open to turn off the wireless security. Please try to connect.

If the issue persists, I suggest that you delete the connection, and recreate the wireless network connections. The following website may help you on creating the wireless connection.

Hey fellas,
Recently I adopted a strange problem in Vista x64. I have a home network, which works fine. Just recently, something strange started happening. Now when I click on "network" from the start bar(or anywhere for that matter) the window goes blank, as if its not even going to the "network places". Its hard to describe, so I will paste a screen shot. Sometimes it works fine. When I just boot the computer it works fine, then a little while later it just magically stops(yet anything connected through the network still technically works, like media streaming etc... I just no longer can see anything in "network"). It just seems as if the explorer is not working correctly, but I have no idea what could possibly cause this. I've tried deleting my network and adapters and re-doing everything(including clearing all network info from the registry) and it did nothing. I thought maybe it was a firewall update, so I uninstalled firewall, no effect.

Here's the screenshot:

Any ideas?

It doesn't even come up with the green bar along top or the sidebar on the left. My shared folders on this PC don't even show. Nothing is even displayed in the location bar. Its just as if explorer stops displaying the network after the computer has been on for so long.

If I end task on explorer in task manager and open explorer back up, it works again(like a reboot). Then not after long, it goes back to not working. Very frustrating cause I often transfer files bet... Read more

If anyone can help me with the above error message i would be very grateful. I have just bought a new Netgear WGT624 108 Mbps Wireless Router.

I was able to succesfully set up my network and add the required security with no problems and was able to connect both my PC and Laptop wirelessy. I then proceeded to do a bit of jiggerey pokery with the online router settings (being extremely clever) and now get the error message "The settings saved on this computer do not match the requirements of the network".

I can connect to the router with an ethernet cable but when i try and disable all the security measures it will not work. My desktop PC is connecting no problem is just my laptop with Windows Vista.

I am currently on WPA2-PSK [AES] and am using the correct passphrase but i still cannot get any joy.

I have tried to retrace my steps on both my laptop and my router but i cant seem to go wireless.

Any help?

Thanks

A:"The settings saved on this computer do not match the requirements of the network"

I had the same problem!

This is what I did:

>goto Network and Sharing Center, and click on Manage wireless networks (to the left under Tasks)
>remove your network from the list
>Exit and try connecting to it again. You'll have to put in the password again as if connecting to it for the first time.

That should do it for you, although i also had to enable 802.1x for my wireless settings before it would work again, you might have to do the same.

Good Luck~!

I’m running two XP Pro desktops as well a Windows Home Server (WHS) computer on a hardwired network. Last week my Belkin Wireless router failed and I installed a new Linksys E1000.

I now again have internet access on all desktops plus my two wireless laptops. In addition, I can access all pc’s via remote desktop.

My problem is that I no longer have network access to these computers – in other words, "My Network Places" keeps telling me "I might not have permissions to use this network resourse". This means that I can’t get to my networked HP printer attached to one of my desktop pc's. In addition I can't view the files except logging on via remote desktop

This all appears to have happened since I installed the new router, however I'm not certain it's a router problem since I was able to borrow another router and had the same situation!

I am reasonably network knowledgable. I can ping all computers with both name or address. For some unknown reason, I do have network access only to my WHS computer.

Spent quite a bit of time on this problem and have run out of idead - greately appreciate any and all help!!

Hi,

1. I just notice there are several items in "My Network Places", these are some websites I have visited before. I can't understand why these websites are in "My Network Places", but most the other websites I visited are not in "My Network Places". I never add these in my computer, and just don't know how and why these items come from. I have try to delete one item in "My Network Places", and it seems that I can easily delete it, but I don't know if it still leaves in other places of my computer. Who can help me figure out how these items added into my computer?

2. Are these items in "My Network Places" become my local network? How does this happen? After install a firewall in my computer these days, I notice that if I open the "My Network Places" page, my firewall ask me if I allow my computer to go to the places in "My Network Places" one-by-one, I don't know what is this.

3. I have read the Windows Help, but it doesn't help much about it. It seems from the Windows Help that normally these computers shared files or printers. How can I share something from several websites I visited?

Please someone help me out. Thanks in advance.

You can get there by going to the Network and Sharing center, look on the left where it says Manage Wireless Connections, you can open up the profile for that connection then make adjustments to it. You will need to know the SSID, wireless password, the type of security and encryption also need to match.

For some reason the active network shows "Public network", so I wanted to change it to "Home network", but the changed setting could not be saved or the "Save Changes" was grayed. This happened on my home network. What could be wrong?

A:"Home Network" setting cannot be saved

Usually you can click on the picture of the park bench and then have the option to change the network. If you can't, then you can use the group policy editor to change things. You will also be able to change the default behavior - it sounds like you might have accidentally picked public and then picked the box that says don't ask again.

Click the orb, then type gpedit.msc. Under local computer policies -> computer config -> windows settings -> security settings -> network list manager policies, you'll find your network, unidentified networks, identifying networks, and all networks. If you double click on your network, go to the network location and change it to private. Then, go to all networks and make sure that all of the settings are set to "not configured". That should fix your problem.

This can also be caused by not having a default gateway. For example, if you have two computers (or a computer and another device) connected via ethernet, and you don't give the Windows 7 computer a default gateway, by default it will be a public network. If you edit your IP settings and enter a default gateway (use the other computer/device's IP address), the network type will change and you can pick the one you want.

Hi there, I have a VPN set up on my laptop purely for privacy purposes, the problem here is that the VPN can often be quite slow.

It's my understanding that unticking the option: Use Default Gateway on a remote network, would allow my traffic to tunnel through my current internet connection rather than through my VPN's endpoint. I hope this makes sense so far. My question is, if I'm routing through my current internet connection is this still secure? It strikes me as though it wouldn't be, since I'm using my current internet connection tunnel as opposed to going to a remote network, and then out at the endpoint.

Would appreciate any help

Thanks very much.

Miles

A:Is "use default gateway on remote network" (vpn) still secure?

The VPN is going to create a secure tunnel between you and your provider, and your exit point will appear to come from them for whatever you are doing. If you uncheck that box your traffic is not being forced over the VPN. So leave the box checked if your goal is to achieve privacy through this VPN.

I've got a problem with one of the computers in our workgroup: Looking at My Network Places in Windows XP, it used to be named "Local Network", and the Network Location for each of the computers in our workgroup should also be detailed as "Local Network". I'm not sure how it happened, but now My Network Places has the name of "Internet", and the Network Location of all of the computers in our workgroup on that computer are detailed also as "Internet". All of the other computers on the network are fine, and in fact the files on the computers in our workgroup may still be viewed and accessed via My Network Places on the computer in question. However, trying to (for instance) open a database on our server through My Network Places now yields a security error due to Windows XP believing that our network is an Internet network. Files may still be opened by copying them to the local harddrive, but I would like to change the settings in My Network Places back to the "Local Network" setting that it should register our network as. Any hints/suggestions would be very helpful.
Thanks!

I'm Running Windows 7 64 bit, Home Premium, fully updated.

On my laptop (64 bit Windows 7), "Recent Items" works properly, showing all docs I've opened only (no folders, as it should be). The taskbar Jumplists for each program also show recent docs opened in that program.

The "Recent Places" folder, however, is always empty, nor do recent folders show on the Jumplists for folders.

Searching has turned up nothing useful, but tells me I'm not the only one with this issue.

What I've tried already:sfc /scannow
making sure both the "Store and display" options in Taskbar and Start Menu Properties are checked.
making sure the reg key HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders\Recent points to the correct folder (%APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent Items) and that the folder itself is actually named "Recent Items" and not just "Recent"
running a disk scan
Safe mode
Essentially, it seems that documents opened are recorded but not folders. I'm stumped at this point. Anyone know what's up with this?

Hi
I've come back home on holiday from university and am having trouble with reconnecting to my home wireless network.

When I started uni, I had to change settings on my browser(Firefox) and computer to connect to the university network. The instructions for which or here if they are any help (Configure your laptop/PC :: Wireless Access at Aberdeen - DIT, University of Aberdeen click on windows7).

Currently, the wireless network I'm trying to connect to is a BTHomeHub with "shared" "WEP" settings. What do my computer settings need to be for this?

Hopefully someone can help, thanks :)

A:Unable to get "Computer network settings" to match "requirements of the Network"

Go to Start/Search and type inetcpl.cpl right click the inetcpl.cpl icon in the search results and Run As Administrator. go to /Connections/LAN Settings. Make sure all the boxes are unchecked. Now go to Start/Search and type ncpa.cpl right click the ncpa.cpl icon and Run As Administrator. now Right click the Local Area connection/Properties scroll down to Internet Protocol (TCP-IP IPV4)/Properties. Make sure Obtain an IP Address and DNS Server Address Automatically are both checked. Now go to Start/Search and type CMD Right click the CMD.exe icon and choose Run As Administrator. In the Command Prompt type ipconfig /release and press enter. the IP Address changes to 0.0.0.0 Now type ipconfig /flushdns and press enter. Now type ipconfig /renew. Now type ipconfig /all. You should have a new IP address try it again. If you still cannot connect please include the text output of your ipconfig /all in your next post

Hi folks.  This is after doing an upgrade from Server 2008 to Server 2008 R2 mind you.  Not sure if that matters.

I was having problems with RDPing to my Win7 clients so I checked that remote desktop was enabled.  When doing so I saw that it informed me that I had to allow rdp access in the firewall which I know had been done before.  After looking around I realized that my network profile had been changed to "Public".  I also noticed that my active network shows as "unauthenticated".  What does this mean and how can I fix this?  How did this happen?  Thanks.

How many DCs are there in the domain?
I suggest that you remove the Windows 7 computer from the AD, and exit the Windows 7 computer from domain. Then, re-join the computer to the domain. How does it work now?
If the issue persists, please temporary disable the firewall on both computers. Also, please check if Network Location Awareness service is enabled on the server and Windows 7 computers.Arthur Xie - MSFT

Windows 7 "Recent Places" stopped recording the most recently visited files. I have presently no idea what triggered this issue.

Please review the attached screenshot displaying the properties of the "Recent Places" folder. Maybe that will give you a hint.

Hello,

I have an Asus Netbook 1005P, running Windows 7, SP1, with Internet Explorer 11.

I am often but not always, experiencing the following issue:

When I attempt to connect to Wifi at a café, the "Wireless Network Connection" for the Network shows "Connected", yet there is no Internet access. Placing the pointer over the Connection icon in the Notification Area displays:

"Unidentified Network No Internet Access".
(The network in question always has an SSID shown in the Wireless Network Connection list.)

This issue occurs whether I am running only the Windows firewall, or am only running the firewall that I prefer which is Comodo.

For antivirus I have Avast Pro (with its "web shield" currently disabled) and so far as this issue is concerned it makes no difference whether this Avast component is enabled or disabled, or whether I disable all Avast Shields.

When this issue occurs, there are often other customers in the café connected to the café wifi and also using the Internet.

I have to ask the café to reset, or turn off and then turn back on, their router, yet other customers do not have to do this to get Internet connection!

This is the issue at whatever café, to whose Wifi I attempt to connect.

Please help with a solution to this issue.

Regards,

Robert339

I have a question, actually I'm development a application for sharing internet connection. I'm using "Wireless Hosted Network and Internet Connection Sharing" that it's in https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/dd815252%28v=vs.85%29.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\SharedAccess\Parameters.

My question is, How I can restart or update the "Internet Connection Shraring" or "Wireless Hosted Network" after I change the IP Address range for that assign IP Address different to default.

There's no delete option for it, even when I try to drop it in the recycle bin. In Windows XP, fully updated, I have several folders full of mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

But all the figures in the "Duration" column appear to be in "hours" and "minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03", but what I want is "minutes" and "seconds".

Any thoughts as to how to change this?

I'm Running Windows 7 64 bit, Home Premium, fully updated.

On my laptop (64 bit Win7), "Recent Items" works properly, showing all docs I've opened only (no folders, as it should be). The taskbar Jumplists for each program also show recent docs opened in that program.

The "Recent Places" folder, however, is always empty, nor do recent folders show on the Jumplists for folders.

Searching has turned up nothing useful, but tells me I'm not the only one with this issue.

What I've tried already:sfc /scannow
making sure both the "Store and display" options in Taskbar and Start Menu Properties are checked.
making sure the reg key HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders\Recent points to the correct folder (%APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent Items) and that the folder itself is actually named "Recent Items" and not just "Recent"
running a disk scan (chkdsk)

Safe mode
deleting/restoring default links in the Favorites list

Essentially, it seems as if documents opened are recorded but not folders. I'm stumped at this point. Anyone know what's up with this?

Sorry to have to come back! It may not be the last time either, unfortunately.

Attached is a copy of my "Network Places." I am being denied access to the 'Toshiba e' and 'Toshiba f' "places." These are actually partitions on the Toshiba "Ws7" HDD. I am trying to access them from my Asus "XP" computer.

"e" contains all my data files. "f" is a temporary storage area for files, etc. that I want to keep for a short while or for other reasons but don't want to put in "e."

What do I have to do to gain access to these via my wireless network? No problem accessing them directly when I am on the Toshiba computer.

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

Hello Jayrrus, and welcome to Vista Forums.

I would recommend that you use Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper to scan your system with at boot to help make sure that your system is malware free first.

Afterwards, you might see if you may be able to do a system restore at boot using a restore point dated before you had these issues to see if that may be able to fix them.

Hope this helps,

Most likely a bug with your Windows phone, not Windows 10. Microsoft is not supporting the Lumia line that well. It does help when you ask for help, that you also post the model of the phone, what OS version it is running, along with screenshots or logs of what is wrong.

I've come accross an unusual problem that I've never seen before.
I'm on windows 7 home premium 64 bit.

I have a Library called "work". Its actually located in my documents folder.

In this folder I have \Work\Discs\ubuntu. As you may have guessed I work with linux on occasion.
I wanted to create a new folder here but the new folder button was missing from the toolbar and the context menu.
I can create a new folders elsewhere just not here.

I thought as an easy workround I would create a new folder in the parent directory and simply move it. I created it in \work\discs and then moved it into "ununtu" only to find it wasnt there.
If I navigate to the real location of this folder the new folder is there ok.

Then I thought if this folder is playing up I will create a new one and just delete this one so I created \work\discs\ubuntu2 and moved all of the contents of ubuntu to here.
So far so good.
I then created 3 new folders here "1004" "1010" and "1104" I then moved all the files from ubuntu into these folders.

To be clear now \work\disc\ubuntu2 should now contain 3 folders and no files.
I then deleted ubuntu and renamed ubuntu2 --> ubuntu.
I then double clicked on the new "ubuntu " folder expecting to see 3 folders yet I see the contents as it was before I started. If I call it anything other than ubuntu I see the contents fine but if I name it ubuntu it reverts to its old state.

Any Ideas whats causing this.

Sounds like your registry hack may have given you more than expected. So I hope you backed up those changes so you can restore the original entries to see if that fixes your icon issue. Once done, then you can start over and try an alternate method to get rid of those "annoying folders." Good luck.

I've spent the last two or so weeks attempting to fix this problem. I'll explain it to the best of my ability. If you have any questions, I'll be happy to help you help me.

My problem started about 10 days ago. Prior to this date, my service would drop, not predictably, but enough that I can remember it. Comcast has insisted there is no problem and no other computers on the network experienced this problem, so I assumed it was something local. I never made a real attempt to fix it, however, because it wasn't a big enough problem to bother me. A simple reboot would fix the problem. The error would occur most often when I was downloading media and running another program that was accessing the internet. The problem would still occur without both happening at the same time, however, so I assumed that it was a coincidence.

10 days ago, I was on the internet, browsing. I left for an hour and upon my return, found the internet was disconnected. I rebooted and, instead of connecting, an error came up. "Limited or no connectivity." After several more restarts, I was connected, but it dropped out again, with the same error. I connected looked my Wireless card up and it connected to the network.

After several days, the wireless card came up with the same error. In addition, the error was still happening with the LAN connection and it would say the network cable is unplugged, when it is clearly plugged in. I would have assumed it was an error wit... Read more

Hi,

I have been having this problem with my desktop computer for some time, and have tried so many things with no real solution.

Basically, the internet works SOMETIMES, and then suddenly, for seemingly no reason, it will lose connection, fail to acquire the network address, and then end up saying "Limited or No Connectivity".

Sometimes when I start the computer up, this will happen from the beginning. Sometimes when I do a system restore to a few days previously it will sort the problem, but then the problem returns after a period of time.
(My desktop computer worked fine for some time, and it has only been in the past few weeks that it has had this problem.)
So, problem:
Fails to acquire network address on one computer (in two seperate XP partitions), says "Limited or No Connectivity".
Connection works fine on laptop.
Problems also on Xbox Live (disconnecting). I am guessing same problem as desktop, but of course with less options to experiment and analyse.

Here is my network's set-up:

BT HomeHub 2.0
Desktop Computer (running two different XP's in seperate partitions, BOTH of which have the same problem)
XP-1 (SP2): Many programs installed, incl. AVG 8.0, Sygate Firewall, and Firefox.
XP-2 (SP2): Very few programs installed, fresh OS. Still problematic.

Xbox 360: Disconnects from Live sporadically, and sometimes refuses to reconnect.

Hi, so currently i have a problem, every time i click on a launcher this message appears "The drive or network connection that the shortcut 'Planetside 2.lnk' refers to is unavailable. Make sure that the disk is properly inserted or the network resource is available, and then try again". (please refer to the attachment to see the message for yourself)

Additional information: the harddrive(2TB) that i am using for the computer has been split into two drives. The "C:" drives usually contain necessary programs for a standard computer, and the "D:" drives has all my games (planetside 2 is one of them), work, music and so on. After seeing that message above appear for the first time today, i also realised that my "D:" has also disappear (completelt vanished), so basically every shortcut that is source from that drive is not working. Hello,

I'm setting up printer sharing on an XP system. I ran the wizard and gave it the okay to share printers.
When I go to my printer options 'Share' tab, select 'Share this printer' and click 'Apply' I get:

"Printer settings could not be saved. Operation could not be completed."

What would cause this?

Thank you.

A:Solved: "Printer settings could not be saved. Operation could not be completed."

Nevermind. 'Server' service was disabled. Enabling this service fixed the issue. Hey, I'm getting good at this.

Hi,

Issue is with an Excel document that runs a macro to report information from another data sheet:
Raw data - 3MB
Macro - 8MB
Result file - 120MB
When the macro is complete;
1. The document shows an error when trying to save (see screenshot with error) -- Black icons show within the save window (see screenshot).
2. Copying small amounts of information takes around a minute or longer.
3. Switching tabs sometimes does not change the information on the screen (current tab stays the same but the bottom button doesn't).

Tried the following:
Office 2013 St - downgraded to 2010 to test. No change.
Tested Excel doc on another laptop (identical spec) and saw no issues.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Hey guys,

I've experienced a problem with my particular iTunes program in Windows 7. Whenever the iTunes program was running, it gives me an error stating in the form of a dialog(ue) box:

"The iTunes Library file cannot be saved. You do not have enough access priviges for this operation."

At first, I thought there was a virus that could have altered some files, but I've found out that my trusty 'ol AVG antivirus (free version 2012) that was doing a routine antivirus scan and that would have led into that error.

However, when I stopped the Antivirus scan - the error has simply gone away....

I was wondering how can I prevent this particular problem from re-occurring?

A:Windows 7: iTunes states that a "library file cannot be saved - insufficient rights"

it is scanning your library for nasties If you want to take a chance and if you are sure there will never be a nasty from something you may have downloaded and added to the library, you can exclude folders by using the "Scan specific files or folders" scan.

I want to send out a big THANK YOU to Rollin Rog for all the posts he makes on here. I always see posters post their problems, but not as many that share their solutions, so here is mine.

I have been stuck with a computer that unexplainably slowed down and turned into a pile of molassas last week. After a wonderfully useless chat session with Gateway, I tried all the troubleshooting tips that I could find (disk error checking, virus scan, disk defragmenter, hard drive utility scan, memory scan, ad scan, ms config startup changes, deleting temp files, etc. etc. etc.).

And THEN I found Rollin Rog's checklist.

For some reason, the current transfer mode setting changed to PIO. I uninstalled the driver and rebooted the system, and now WALLA!, everything is good. (I would be interested to see if anyone has an explaination as to why that happened?)

Thanks Rollin Rog for the time you put into this forum. This will be the first place I check in the future if I have any additional computer problems.

We have an issue that just developed. I have several Windows XP computers and two Windows 7 Professional laptops. All were working fine editing and saving files to our Window NT server. Now we get a "Document not saved" message. There is a file created, but it has "0" bytes and cannot be opened. The message states that MS Excel cannot open that file becuase it is not a valid "xlsx file. I have run virus scans on all of the coputer using Kaspersky Internet Security 2010. Found some minor bugs that were removed. Files can be saved to individual hard drives and then they can be cut and pasted to the server. I thought the permissions may have gotten changed on th eserver, but I reset those.

I just tried to create a pdf file in Acrobat Professional 8 using the Create pdf --> From Multiple Files option, and the final product should be 4534 pages long. But, every time I try to save it, it says "The document could not be saved. An I/O error occurred."

I found this, but it doesn't solve anything. I can't find anything else on google. Adobe Forums are all but useless, so I can't search them. Is there any way to fix this?

I am using "Composer," a part of the SeaMonkey 'suite', to create pages for my new website.

When I "save as" a page, the icon that is attached to the page is of "Internet Explorer." In the case of my "Home" (index) page, this results in a drastic change to the appearance of the page that is totally unacceptable.

1- Why is the file saved as an "IE" file?
2- Can this be changed so that the appearance of the file in MY Docs is unchanged? [Incidentally, when looking at this page with "IE" the appearance is unacceptable. When viewed with any of the Mozilla provided browsers, it is AOK.]

I need help badly!

Thanks, {redoak}

Addendum: I believe I should be able to use "Folder Options" to change from "IE" to "SeaMonkey," per "Help and Support," which I just now perused. However, I can't figure out how to do this! Maddening!

So i am lookin at my itunes library and i wanted to see where all the songs were that were NOT downloaded through itunes. I only have a few that werent because i recently formatted my hdd and installed windows 7. I transfered a few songs over and they are in itunes now. What confuses me now is that these songs are located in C:/documents and settings/.../my music/... and i cannot access this folder. Now i did a quick googling about the issue, and i get the idea that they are "junction points" and dont really exist.

So my question i guess is how in the hell did i transfer songs to a "junction point" that doesnt exist? im pretty sure these songs were transfered using a wireless network(which was a pain in the *** in itself to figure out with the "sharing" and what not) i honestly dont remember how i did it, but i THINK i did these that way. Actually now that i think about it, i could have just replaced my library with a saved itunes library file which i did and that ended up giving me a bunch of songs in my itunes library that could not be found. Understandably because they arent on this fresh HDD. But either way THESE few songs in question ARE on the hdd.. supposedly in My documents but that cannot be possible right? isnt My documents just a pointer to a different location on the hdd? if so why doesnt it show me the ACTUAL location. Is there anyway to find the ACTUAL location? And not only that, but it seems the ONLY way i can get to these song ... Read more

I have about 5 Mb of W2K .doc files saved.
What happens to the formatting of saved .doc files IF normal.dot has to be replaced due to corruption of some sort?
Is all formatting lost so I would have to go thru & reformat every file, or what?
I looked at the "Normal dot What?" file at the "Word Expert Page" but didn't find anything that looked like what I was trying to find out re my question....

A:Word2K's "Normal.dot" & saved files.

The normal.dot file has nothing to do with saved files.

The normal.dot file contains the information like what toolbars show, autocomplete and autotext. It contains setup window information and things like that.

You can delete the normal.dot without hurting any files.

The best thing to do is to rename it for a couple of days and see if that cures your problem and then delete the renamed one.

I have seen this problem a lot on other forums and the solutions do not work. I even tried a work-around using another computer and that is where it gets very interesting. I am trying to DL Himachi (Hamachi - Download). It downloads fine on every other computer in my house and my friends.
My problem is with a brand new Alienware 17 running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit.

Using Firefox, I get this error when I prompt it to DL:
"C:\Users\[MyName]\SoftonicDownloader_for_hamachi.exe could not be saved, because you cannot change the contents of that folder.
Change the folder properties and try again, or try saving in a different location."

I receive this error message no matter where I try to save it and even when I try the troubleshooting tips from Mozilla and other forums in which this error has been discussed at length.

Using Explorer, I try to "save as" and I get:
"You'll need to provide administrator permission to copy this file" [I click 'Continue']
User Account Control pops-up and ask me if I will give permission to

There is a dialog box that opens when opening an attachment in email (Netscape mail on Windows NT) that asks if you want to open the attachment or save it. In addition, there is a checkbox that says "Don't Ask again." A friend checked the box and now every time he opens mail, the system always tries to save attached MS Word documents rather than opening them. He would like to "uncheck" the "Don't Ask" switch.

Anyone know how this can be reset?

A:Where is "Open or Save" checkbox saved?

It is in the registry, probably under the Netscape key. It may be criptic and therefore a search of netscape's website may be in order to find the exact key to change. a poor alternative is to remove netscape (save bookmarks) and reinstall.

I wanted to backup my "C" drive using "XXClone." This required a separate, reserved partition on my external hard drive. I chose to use "PartitionMagic," which has never failed me before. I used the "Create Backup Partition" mode.

The process stalled at 47% completion. Task Manager told me "PM" was not responding.

I now can not access the XHDD via my primary computer. It just isn't seen!

When I connected the XHDD to a backup laptop, it was recognized in "My Computer." However, when I tried to open it, an error window appeared saying the drive was corrupted!

Is there any way to bring the drive back to life? It is not important to save anything that is on it, since I have a second XHDD with the same material on it, thankfully. I would just like to avoid having to buy a replacement, if possible.

Thanks, {redoak}

My office just upgraded, and I can no longer use Windows XP. On this system, I was able to add a separate taskbar to facilitate quick access to commonly-browsed folder locations on our vast network, and another one expedited the launching of useful programs and lists. Each task on each taskbar was represented with a big custom icon to save eye strain. I had them installed in opposite vertical margins, and they were set on auto-hide to keep them out of the way when not being used. Just move your mouse pointer to the left or right margin, and BAM! Sorry for the cliche, but I really got used to the convenience of what I had set up, and I just don't think I can be as efficient without anything comparable.

Now there appears to be nothing comparable in the Windows 7 GUI, and it's making me sick with rage! I see only the option to put a "toolbar" on an existing "taskbar", and no option to create any additional taskbars! This cramps up your one-and-only taskbar, plus the tiny toolbar access buttons require way too much precision for anything that's supposed to be quick. When you've figured out how to bring up that ridiculous button, the list that it yields is small enough to cause painful eyestrain - nothing efficient, much less cool about this at all! I have seen customization options in other OS GUIs that may have resolved some of these issues, but I see none such in W7.

I have tried every google search string that I can think of, and found... Read more
