Solved: Small Symbol w/File Name Icon in Windows Explorer

Q: Solved: Small Symbol w/File Name Icon in Windows Explorer

I'm running WindowsXP Professional on a Dell Latitude D600, and I recently swapped out my laptop base unit, due to a failure with the prior unit. I successfully swapped over all the peripherals from my old laptop unit (screen, drives, Wi-Fi, battery, etc.) and the laptop started up normally, with no problems.

While not a problem, I just now noticed that on Windows Explorer, under [file] Name column, I see that for everyone of the files listed, there a very small "green checkmark" or a "yellow exclamation mark" in the lower right-hand corner of the symbol that designates the file type (Word, Excel, PDF, etc.). I've never seen that under Windows Explorer before, working this laptop - or any computer for that matter.

Anybody have an explanation for the mysterious symbols that have shown up, all of a sudden? Thanks.

Why does a small old fashioned style telephone receiver icon appear next to the WiFi connection symbol, next to the signal bar in the top left hand corner of my Microsoft Lumia 550 phone? This little telephone icon replaces the arrow that points to the north west. The WiFi icon remains unaltered but the little receiver flashes on and off and then disappears
I cannot find an explanation for this. Is somebody trying to call me using the WiFi or WhatsApp or Viber?

I have DL'd some freebie stuff for X-plane. [Aircraft - airports etc]
I have used a recommended installer to ensure correct file placement.
None of the new stuff will open in the program although it is itemised.
In WinExplorer each new file has a little lock symbol on the icon.

Can anyone explain this and how to deal with it?

Its been a long time since i tried this, So i cant identify what I did to cause it .

Trying to drag multiple .sut ( brush files ) into Art-App it belongs. From the File Explorer window. Was able to do this many times in the past.

I noticed something ; when I use the search engine called
" Everything " from its window interface, if I call up the files in that window, then I'm able to drag and drop the files from that window, directly into the Art app. But cant do it from the File explorer window like I was able to do before.

Windows 10 home basic.

One suggestion, I read in the windows 7 forum, there might be some registry change that happened. But I dont know about such things, just wanted to suggest a idea. Anyone can help ?

Microsoft today rolled out a massive update for Windows 10 preview builds and in addition to a plethora of new features, the company also introduced a completely new icon for File Explorer.

The default file manager on Windows 10 PCs, File Explorer has been around for many years (it was previously known as Windows Explorer), but its looks and features have barely changed in the latest Windows versions.

Users, however, are still hoping for a bigger overhaul of the app and one of the main requests is support for tabs that would make it easier to work with multiple folders in a single window.

New almost-monochrome icon
In the meantime, Microsoft is working on making File Explorer better match the looks of Windows 10, so the company introduced a new icon that follows the monochrome design language used for the other icons in the operating system.

?You will notice a little bit of color still present in the icon. The design team was a bit hesitant to completely let go of the yellow because it has become such a familiar part of the File Explorer branding,? Gabe Aul, head of the Windows Insider program, explained.

?They explored a variety of different ways to keep the yellow and still match the cleanliness of the black and white Windows app icons. The new icon you see in this build is where the design team landed that is closer to monochrome, but still has the familiar shape that users recognize, and has a nod to the yellow that you see all throughout File Explorer. I work with a lot of animation sequences, and when using Win explorer it has always irked me that if I want to view anything but list or details view then the filenames are truncated.

This is a problem because the sequences I work with often have long(ish) names and numerically iterated, generally being suffixed by a padded number.

Is there a way that I can view tiles, or content, or icons without having the filenames truncated?

(Bonus question: how come sometimes I get the option to view 'content' and other times the option is not there?)

Thanks peeps.

Example image of what I'm talking about:

A:Windows explorer - How do I view full file names AND see an icon

You could try these options:
Increasing the Icon Spacing (horizontal and vertical) can allow for longer filenames.
Setting the icons to the largest size can also allow you to view longer names.
Also you could use Details view and have the Preview Pane active.
That program seems to be using the old style Windows dialogue boxes, so I'm not sure if any of the options (I listed above) will have much effect.

I'm running Windows XP Home Edition w/SP2 on a IBM Thinkpad 600X, which is a hand-me-down within the family (and no, not one the New Jersey or New York "families" . . .).

I've noted that the Icon Tray on the laptop does not seem to have the option to Show Hidden Icons, like my Dell Latitude (running Windows Professional). I've tried to "expand" the Icon Tray to display the other active and inactive icons, using the Properties setting, which takes you to Taskbar and Start Menu Properties. The Hide Inactive Icons box is checked and under Customize, more than just two of the icons that do display (other than the date/time), are selected as Always Show. I've made changed and applied them and even restarted the laptop, but no more than two icons ever display in the Icon Tray - and the tray seems to lack the properties to display inactive icons. Is there some menu setting (that's hiding elsewhere) not toggled properly?

Hi Guys,

Where and what controls the Windows icon that rotates in the top right hand corner of my IE 6 window, i.e. at the far right of the menu bar just beneath the X?

Mine has changed from the standard Windows icon and I'd like to change it back (without reloading IE).

I'm intrigued on this one as I can't locate any registry entry that might control it.

Then maybe it would be possible to use an icon of your own choice?

They still do open with the windows pic program as I want them to - but only on the admin accout, I usually surf and play and do everything else with a user account, and even if I reset everything under folder options for the file associacions it somehow doesn't apply to the other account.
The funny thing is that windows tells me in the file association menu that I changed the file association's properties and can set them back to standart "photo suite 6" - a program that I uninstalled ages ago ... can I somehow set this back to the normal winxp picture and fax displaying thing?

In windows Explorer files of the extention .avi will have an icon that is that little film strip with a screen shot from the video file. Matroska files (.mkv) only show a generic icon in explorer? How can i fix this so that the Matroska file will show the screen shot from the video file as is does with avi files in windows explorer? I have Home Premium? Thanks:)

A:Matroska File to show screen shot as icon like an avi file does in explorer

I wrote a similar post about mov files in here
Have a quick read at it (to understand what you're doing and why it's the way it is), then grab some matroska directshow filters. There's a list here:

P.S: Keep in mind the filter sparses the mkv file only (aka the container), it does not decode the audio or video stream inside of it. If you're only getting a filter but can't see the video, it would be because you're missing the codec (compressor-decompressor) for the video stream. I'm mentioning it because mkv files are usually encoded using codecs for which the avi container is not suitable (for example H.264 or AC3). If that's the problem, be sure to get codecs too (for example ffdshow-tryouts for H.264, or AC3filter for AC3).

Anytime I drag a file(s) in a folder window, a translucent, oversized icon follows the mouse pointer, partially obscuring up to 4 nearby items.

Can this effect be disabled? I'm sure somebody at MS thought it was slick idea, but it just gives me a headache. I haven't found a setting that controls it -- maybe I'm looking in the wrong spot. (Am guessing, while this isn't an "animation" per se, it's in the same general category.)

I had the exact same problem as described by draclan12 in this thread: Windows 7 Extensionless File Icon.
That is my windows 7 (Ultimate 64bit) would stubbornly try to open extensionless files with the "Application Launcher" from the game Mass Effect 2.
Since I didn't find any other solution, I feel obliged to post mine here.

Unfortunately the exact suggestion by TheOutcaste did not work, since in my case I didn't have said "UserChoice" subkey.
However I found a key in:

pointing at the Application Launcher executable, which I thought suspicious. So I backed up my registry and since the sub branch \Shell\Command\ didn't contain anything else (which doesn't necessarily mean it's not mandatory, mind you) I completely erased it.
And after restarting the explorer.exe, files with no file extension were unassociated once more.

Hi there

If you have Loads (and I mean Loads) of small files - e-books, excel data. word docs, emails etc etc then File explorer runs REALLY slow on even fast devices

I gave up moving this lot after about 4 hours. (W10 machine).

Switched to Linux system -- did it in 45 mins similar hardware to W10 machine - both Real machines --not VM's and direct transfer (not via LAN).

What gives !!!!!

I know it's only a 1 time move but similar hardware with identical HDD should not have a HUGE difference in the move --note in fact Linux actually has hard a harder job since the file system was NTFS which isn't a native Linux file system either. Source system external HDD on USB 3 device,, target systm larger HDD device on USB3 device -- no hubs - USB 3 transfer working OK on both W10 and Linux so reasonable comparison.

IMO the NTFS file system has serious problems if you start messing around with this type of data. !!!! Perhaps Ms need to look at a better file system for Mass storage devices. 5 and 6 TB HDD's are quite common now even for consumer sector and not expensive either.

I know this is an exceptional job but it does show that something in File explorer isn't very efficient once you start manipulating large volumes of data - especially in small files. (Approx 290 TB of data consisting of 128,000 files in 55,000 odd directories)

I'm usually quite happy with Windows - but there is definitely a problem here. Fortunately it was a 1 off job though !!!!.... Read more

i cudn't open my c: or my documents, and almost all.

i tried to cleaned them up using my antivirus program (AVG 7.5, free ed)
and it works

after that, i tried to do another scanning, and the result shows that it has no viruses anymore,

fyi- before there was 8 file were infected, most of them are from system32

the new problem is, even though i can open all my drives like normal, but the icon of my drive c now has changed into a red cross symbol, as shown in the attachments, "screen"

and when i turn my laptop on, there's a box appears, shown in attachments, "error1"

can u please tell me what is going on with my laptop?

Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
Click on Install.
It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Hello, so this problem has happened to me before, and it's gone away before, but now it's back and it's staying for longer than it has previously. So the first thing I noticed is that in the bottom right on the toolbar, my network icon has the loading symbol around it. It doesn't go away unless I right click on it, in which case it shows that I'm not connected to a network. I can still open and run my browser, however pages like pandora or youtube don't load. Any program that connects online (such as games), and some that don't, refuses to open. I can't open Network and Sharing Center, or any page in Control Center for that matter. I also can't run any troubleshooters. I've tried restarting my computer in various safe modes including with command prompt, where I ran sfc /scannow. This brought up a message saying that some files were corrupted but could not be fixed. I also restored my computer to a previous time when my computer was working fine, and that fixed the problem until I restarted my computer the next day, when the problem returned. I know it's not my network that is the problem, my wifi works fine and I've double checked all the cables to my modem, router, and the Ethernet cable which I tried switching out. Sorry for such a long post and thank you to anyone who took the time to read it, also thanks in advance to anyone who can give me some advice.

So, pretty self explanatory, I have this super bizarre problem, whenever I have my taskbar set to small icons in the properties, the taskbar icons are all wrong, for example, the Windows Task Manager will show up as Google Chrome (application seem to take a fancy for that icon) or Adobe Lightroom will show up as the Windows Picture Viewer. I have searched everywhere, and all I can find are cases of missing icons, which is not my problem. Perhaps this is linked to the other problem I am having. (Half of monitor is out of sync.)

I have an issue with copying or moving files between folders in Windows Explorer using Home Premium 7. I installed Windows 7 a year ago and faced this issue. I got rid of it, but don?t recall how. In the last few days, it has returned----I don?t know why.

When I grab a file with the mouse and drag it to the left to another folder, an icon appears on top of that file. The icon is totally unnecessary and obscures my view of the destination folder. This often causes the file to drop into the wrong folder. The icon changes depending on the type of file being moved.

In the screenshot below, I am attempting to drag a Word file from the right side of Explorer to another folder on the left side. Notice the postage stamp-sized ?Word? icon with the large ?W? that covers up portions of the directory tree.

How do I get rid of that completely pointless icon?

I thought it was some setting in folder view options, but I have played with those settings to no effect.

A:File drag and drop in Explorer obscured by icon

It is actually a good feature. It tells you which folder it will be dropping thr file into.

By your picture if you released it at that point it would drop it in the temp folder.
You align the mouse to show folder name you want to drop it into.

Drop it misaligned as XP use to be and it could go in the folder you want or in the folder on either side. Or even drop between folders.

Go to this tutorial.
Visual Effects Settings - Change[2]=Appearance

Show window content while dragging may be need to be unchecked. If that doesn't work put the check back in the box.

Hello all,

This situation just manifested itself a few days ago and I cannot seem to find the answer to it.

Before it happened, when I clicked on my shortcut for Microsoft Explorer browser window it would always open up into a large screen (not maximized, but a full screen). Now, it opens up in a small window and I have to maximize it or drag the corners out to the edges of my monitor each time to make it into a big screen. I really don't know what changed this all of a sudden and, for the life of me, I can't figure out how to get it back to where it was.

Any ideas or help out there would be greatly appreciated.

While using Explorer 6, if I have a full screen open and try to open another window, the new window always opens as a small box, maybe taking up 25% of the screen. How can I get this program to open new windows full screen? Better yet, how can I get the program not to open new windows, but replace the current window. Then all I have to do is go back when I want to...Thanks

I have a file folder directly below "C:" that has a folder name of "19193908697b46e209b3" - That's the name on the file folder? The folder looks like its got a lot of Microsoft update stuff in it - a bunch of .dll's, exe's and others. A total of 127 files. Its taking up 41.7MB and I could use the space. I'm running XP SP3 and using IE7 - so I'm up to date. Can I delete this folder and these files and get the space back? Are they something that was just placed there as part of a OS update? Thanks.

Whenever I go into Windows file explorer it acts as though my s key is stuck down, selecting anything that starts with s. Also when I try to search in Windows 8 search or File Explorer it just spams s. This also happens in the Souce engine dev console but not in gameplay, and on the desktop, selecting and deselecting steam. Obviously the key is not stuck because I can type this now and I do not want to restart my computer because I'm afraid it'll spam s if i try to log in. Hi, I was running an antivirus, and I noticed that some of the file descriptions on my laptop had what I think are Chinese symbols in them. should I be worried about this or is it normal?
one of the files was   C:\Windows\Installer\16cd65.msp->#152TTo152U/(chinese symbol)InstallExecuteSequence   there were more but I didn't manage to catch what they were, I took a photo of the screen that I can post if it helps but the symbol is probably to small to read.
It was over a week ago when this happened and I can remember if I was running 9labs removal tool or eset. I can't find a log for eset (I don't think it picked up anything) but here is the results for 9lab:

Now the problem. I changed the autorun.ico to a different image and then rebooted. The new image displays properly when in small icons, list, and detail views. I have a file on my desktop which keeps making windows explorer crash and restart in a continuous loop. The file is an MKV file from my new HD camera (cheap one off ebay which I am now suspicious is dodgy) which is sitting on my desktop.

Explorer crashes when I log on to MY username almost instantly when it loads up. I'v booted it up in safe mode and explorer is fine but I can't delete the file. Everything (time remaining ect) still says calculating on wont delete it.

I can log on as another user and explorer is fine until I touch that file. I can rename, delete or do hatever to any other file on my desktop (on someone elses account) but as soon as I do something to this file, explorer crashes and restarts so I assume that file is infected. Iv scanned with AVG and malwarebytes and also used F-secure and onecare's online scanner, not finding anything except a few tracking cookies (F-secure was my first scan which removed them).

I'm currently uploading the file to VirusTotal so I'll see what that says.

Any other ideas on how to delete the file? It's useless anyway.

Thank you.

Hi guys.

My Windows 8 laptop has been playing up a bit recently, most notably with the green ribbon of death problem and a couple of other things to do with indexing. I seem to have fixed the issues, but one thing that is still causing a problem is this one file in my Downloads folder. It is a .wav file which was a free (legal) download from soundcloud. When I first downloaded it (September last year), from what I can remember, it worked fine. Somewhere between then and now it seems to have got corrupted or something. I know it is this file causing the problems because not only will the song not play, it crashes Windows Media Player and crashes Windows Explorer when I try to delete it, move it, rename it etc. I've tried deleting it using Shredder, no luck. I have also tried the Unlocker program to attempt to delete it and it crashed that too. All of these things also happened in Safe mode, so no luck with deleting it there. I also tried deleting it with Command Prompt with no luck. I think that file may have been causing the majority, if not all of the problems I was having before. Earlier today I opened Task Manager and kept it as the first window, and then opened Downloads, clicking on each file one by one while monitoring Windows Explorer's CPU usage. For each file it remained low, well under 10% but then AS SOON as I click on the dodgy file it's CPU usage shot up to 50-70% and caused the green ribbon of death to come back above it. Even after closing Down... Read more

This is a new build for my son. Installed windows xp home using an old hp dvd burner. Everything is fine except that the hp drive, that was used to install windows, see every cd or dvd as a music cd. For example, the windows xp disc, when put into this drive, shows up as a music cd with a small cda file on it. So the drive is working (pre-operating system) fine, the discs are fine ( checked on other pc's). I have searched google and cannot find anyone who has had this problem. I had read about the registry possibly being corrupt and went in to look for upper and lower filters but they were non-existent. I am at a total loss. Any ideas?

I've had the asian language pack installed on my laptop for awhile now and I know of a similar issue that involves the Korean won symbol, fortunately that never happened to me and I use my computer to type Korean frequently. I was attempting to get a program to run in Japanese to help out one of my friends, and after a restart; anywhere there's a file path it shows the ¥ instead of \.

I know there's no difference aside from appearance, but it's really annoying to look at it.

Hi guys

This is my first post on this forum. I found it while surfing the net. I am already impressed by the amount of information that can be found here.

Well, now to my problem.
I installed Windows XP on my friend's PC. Everything went fine. After that I installed the necessary drivers and other applications including Flyakite OSX 3.5, which turns your Windows into Mac OS X.
Everything seemed OK until I opened My Computer as usual and tried to open drive D: . Surprisingly it didn't open, it rather gave me a dialog box telling me to choose the program I want to open this "file". Strange!!
When I right click on the partition and chose explore or open it open normally. The same happened with all my partitions except the primary partition C:. It's the only one I can open through my computer. When I want to access the other drives I used Windows explorer or simply press the "Folders" button in My Computer. I have also noticed that when I right click on these partitions I get strange signs like '[email protected] in the menu that appears.

My guess was it's a virus, so I did a full system scan with Avast antivirus. It did find two trojan horses, I moved them to chest (quarantine). But that's it. And still the same symptoms as before.
Before I forget, there was another strange thing, but that was resolved (I think) when I did the avast system scan. Whenever I select one folder, the surrounding folders are selected, too. It's like I use the... Read more

Hello forum,

I have been trying to figure out how to change the status of a file that is present on network discovery on another computer.

I am just going through and assessing each file.

I notice the only person I really would like to share with is anyone that uses the external hard drive - much like the other files on the hard drive that do not have a lock on it.

I know that it may be basic - but I just want a work around for the few folders that I managed to see in computer management.

If someone could please give me a basic idea of what menu's to go into - I promise I will not change the behaviour of any folders.

Thank you.

Yesterday I started using Infranview to view some *.tiff images. I also used ran cc cleaner. Other than the above, I did not really do anything different.

I have Windows XP with all the latest "fixes". My version of Infranview was downloaded from the Infraview main website in July 2008.

Today in the morning I booted my computer and none of my start up programs would work. In fact, I could not even start the control panel options or get my firebox brower working. Windows XP says it's an insufficient memory problem, paging file issues. I have 1 Gigabyte of memory, Pentium 4 chip, Dell Computer, I bought 4 years ago. I have 80 GB of hard drive space, around 65 GB used, 15 GB FREE.

The specific message is "Windows Out of Virtural Memory" and "paging file too small". this happends even if I reboot. All of the start up programs (Zone alarm, AVG Antivirus, Webroot Spy Sweeper) that usually get loaded are NOT loaded. It seems all of the memory has been drained and depleted so that nothing can run, not even control panel applications or firefox.

I am just speculating it MAY be due to Infranview.

Could I have picked up some type of virus/malware from *.TIFF files? These were the only typoe of files I viewed and reviewed using Infranview.

Any advice would be helpuful. Thanks.

See if unpinning the File Explorer on the left, pinning the one on the far right, then drag the one on the right to the left and drop may help.

i recently purchased a laptop with Win 8 (64bit) all drivers installed. but in the start menu when i type something to search, the search result icon seems to have color issues. big icons color is perfect only small icon has color issue. please refer attached screenshot

any idea?

A:Small icon colors

That might be not windows 8, but startw8 issue, try some other start menu program, like classic shell, go to settings, find option to make icons small, and see if problem is still here.

Hi guys,

This is my first post.

I recently did a clean Windows7 Ultimate 32bit install after a virus and am running Kaspersky Internet Security 2011 for the first time and this has started happening..

After the install everything was normal, except I couldn't delete some old folders on
some of the disks because they were owned by User 1-121-46-465... and read this was the previous install user, so I went through the ownership changed it to Me and deleted them. I am a n00b so may have done something to cause this in the process not sure.

At some stage since then, again sorry not sure exactly when, all downloaded install executable's and some of the previous installs ones already on the disks have this small admin icon on them and can only be run as an Administrator? I noticed this when trying to install Adobe Reader and failed saying it couldn't access the User/Admin/temp dir.

Strange thing is only some of the previous builds exe's are like this, eg in the pic MusicMixer and MediaMonkey were both already the disk and now one has the admin icon but not the other?

Any help please is very much appreciated.

Thank you

Edit: Something I just realised which may explain why I hadn't seen this before is because before the virus I was running a single user account that was a member of the administrators group. After the virus and with my new install I changed that so my user account was no longer a member of the administrators grou... Read more

Hello Likwidsh0k, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You have it correct. The yellow/blue sheild overlay icon on a icon indicates that the program requires UAC permission from the administrator before Windows allows the program to run elevated (run as administrator).

Whenever I try to play mp4 file, system shows"windows explorer stopped working"..!

restart program, close the program....

When I try to do either of these, the system hangs for some seconds, then closes the whole thing and shows desktop....

I downloaded a movie, It was inside a folder, with the mp4 file inside it. Even if I just select the folder the system shows the error.... So I can't even delete the cursed folder now.....

I tried to restart and open, Its shows the error slow the first time... So when I opened the folder, the default symbol on the file was that of Windows media player.... So I tried with media player classic & vlc player to open the file to no avail.... But this time the error was" mpc (or) vlc player stopped working".....!

Plz help....

Here's a weird one, I have a WinXP PC, with a hidden system file in the root of C:\ that is approximately 8 bytes in size. The filename shows up as the following image:
Namely Unicode characters
U+2124, U+2122, U+2620
Double-Stroke Z, Trade Mark symbol, Skull and Crossbones.
I have no idea how it got there or what software created it, but it looks decidedly suspicious (although Symantec Endpoint Protection and Malwarebytes are detecting nothing).
Has anyone seen anything like this before?
Is this likely to be part of some malware?

Hi - never came across this before. Our Dell running XP has several user accounts set up. Mine is fine, but my wife's has a problem. In Windows Explorer, when she clicks on the search button, the animated icon appears (dog, in this case), but nothing else - no choices (All files and folders, Pictures, music, or video, etc.) appear. Right-clicking anywhere only gives the Close Toolbar option. the result is that she is unable to search the computer for anything. Same result when using Start->Search. The weird thing is, as I said, Explorer in my user account is fine.

I assume it must be a setting somewhere, but I can't find it. Anyone ever encounter this, or know how to remedy it?

Thanks in advance!

Hello, A friend of mine installed the Mozilla browser and I didnt like it so I uninstalled it. Anyways to make a long story short..Since then,In the address bar (ie icon), and all my internet links (internet shortcuts) show as an unassigned file type now. So for instance if I drag an http link from my browser to my does not show as an ie link anymore (just a random file type). So when I right click my internet links and say "open with" internet explorer it works. However...when I select the check box "always open with this program" it will not change all of my internet shortcuts appear with the "IE" icon like it should. Any suggestions??? Thanks

A:Solved: Internet explorer (shortcut) 6.0.2 icon problem

If you are using Windows XP, simply go to START, ALL PROGRAMS, ACCESSORIES, SYSTEM TOOLS and select SYSTEM RESTORE. Choose a date before you installed the Mozilla browser and perform the system restore. It may not be able to restore the system because you already deleted the program but it is certainly worth a try. Let us know...

Hi guys,
I've got a really annoying problem here. I know that there are three presets of the display size, small, medium large. I always use medium and it has work fine ever since.
But suddenly, the icons on the my desktop became tiny, i can't really tell if the title of the icons became smaller but the icons are definitely smaller. Everything else is the same size, and i checked my settings and they were still set at medium.
Anyhelp please?

A:Display Size, icon became small, everything else same

FIrst, right click on the Desktop and select Screen Resolution. Make sure that is correct for your display.

If okay, then click on an empty area of the Desktop, then hold down the Ctrl key and roll the mouse wheel. One direction makes things smaller, the other makes them bigger.

That will allow you to make them any size you want.

Good day!

I have another problem regarding thumbnail views.

I have these Icon Files (.ico), some appear to be smaller that the others but they were created on the same resolution of 256x256.

At first they appear normal, but when I copy these files to another directory, some icons don't retain their thumbnail size, e.g., from the image above "hp", "jp", "xmen".

But then again, when I rename those files, they revert to their original size, i.e., "jp" renamed to "jp3".

and when I rename "jp3" back to "jp", the thumbnails appear to be small again.

Note that the problem occurred when the Folder containing the icons were copied to another directory.

Hoping for your immediate reply for this concern.

Thank You.

Have you by any chance got two copies of the J. Park icon in the folder where the icons are stored? Any chance you can attach one of the troublesome icon files to this Forum as I would like to try it in my Image Editor?

Hi Harrismith,

Have you seen this forum yet? Explorer Icon View - How to distance icons, more text?

It looks like there's no real solution but depending on what your goal is, you can try holding Ctrl and using the scroll wheel to change icon size.

After Installation of "Fences 2" for desktop management, a haywaire situation ensued. Whenever I tried to open Fences ( which I had sujccessfully used for years), I received "Windows Explorer has stopped working". This was followed by a "Windows Solution", which immediately failed. going back to "Windows Explorer has stopped working".
I've uninstalled Fences and the parade has stopped. The Windows Internet logo and the Windows Explorer logo have both disappeared, although IE10 appears to be working properly, as does windows explorer.
How do I recoverr these marks?

I changed the icon of my windows explorer and pinned it back to my toolbar, after that, it kept the original icon, and then a few hours later I looked and it was changed to the one I chose. I was super happy but after I rebooted my computer, it changed back :/

I thought i remembered seeing a thread on how to change it but I couldnt find it, if there is one could someone direct me there please?

and another thing, I couldnt find the right section to post this in, but hopefully someone can help. Is there a way to lock my external Hard Drive by password? I saw one for making a password locked folder and it intrigued me.

Thanks guys, the help i receive on this site is phenomenal!!!

A:Windows Explorer Icon won't stay the way I want it

- Here you can find a quick tutorial on how to change the icon.
- You can only password protect drives by encrypting them. Since you have windows 7 ultimate you can use windows' built-in encryption system called Bitlocker.
Go to Control Panel > Bitlocker, it is straight forward to encrypt a drive.

Another solution is to use TrueCrypt (or any other softwares) to encrypt the drive the same way, though this process requires more knowledge/time to set up. You have more settings, you can set up an even safer encryption method..

The Bitlocker is a more convinient way to do it and it does the job great!

A website was referred to me by a friend to view a short video. (I am on a 56K modem to the server)

I had Internet Explorer 7 installed at the time and the window came up with a red 'X' in the corner. As I have been having issues with the I/E 'losing itself; then finding itself with appropriate windows displayed during the pause, I decided to try another brouser.

I downloaded Firefox-3. It received the site's window with a video icon in the corner. I did not press the issue further as I never go to u-tube, etc. and all the sites that cluttered the toolbar. It was promptly removed as I personally did not care to spend the time studying it's in and outs.

Next I went to Internet Explorer 8, which is currently on here for trial to see if the 'losing itself' would be solved by the newer version. When going to the same site mentioned above, the window now has an icon thus:

What the heck does this icon mean?

WELL, THAT WAS SHORTLIVED! This time instead of I/E losing and finding itself, it just loses itself and shuts down. Clicking the 'WHA'HAPPEN?' button reveals this: (Data Execution Prevention) What Next?

I/E 8 is outt'a here also, back to I/E 7 <DAMN!>

For reasons I will explain if I do have a problem:

Can someone tell me which "Open" Icon is displayed in their Windows Explorer menu bar (to the right of "Organize") when the following two items are selected (single clicked) within Windows Explorer:

>C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe
(Mine shows a generic type icon, white with a blue band at the top and some verticle bars in the body)
