Compaq Presario 2500 is generally slow all over

Q: Compaq Presario 2500 is generally slow all over

My Windows laptop PC Compaq Presario 2500 runs very slow. There aren't that many programs but things like opening folders, opening programs, even right clicking take a long time. Starting up takes forever as well.

I have tried doing a full system adware/virus scan, deleting the temp. internet files, and the temp. computer files that show up in the WINDOWS folder of the hard drive. Is there a program that can make a computer run faster? Perhaps there are something that I'm missing. Or is this model laptop such a slow computer that no matter what I do it's always going to be this way?

I was thinking of getting an apple mac laptop but I want to try and see if I can do some simple steps to get this running faster than this. Internet surfing in Firefox is actually fast at least. The keyboard isn't bad in any way and besides a mouse hub hardware problem (can't be fixed) it's in great shape. Please let me know what I can do here, thank you much.

Hello lilevee22,

Before the problem started was anything added to or installed on the system?

Try booting to Last Known Good or Safe Mode.

Restart the computer during the boot process repeatedly tap "F8" you should get

the Advanced Options.

Let us know if able to get the system to boot with either option.

the DVD drive stopped working and now the hard drive has errors.

I got an external USB DVD drive on it, but chkdsk cannot seem to repair the hard drive.

Anyone got any idea how to fix it or recover data off of the hard drive. I got a year's worth of work on it, and none of my files show up. Just "File record segment XXXXX is unreadable" errors about a million of them.

A:Compaq Presario 2500

Suggest you stop using the drive until you can recover the data.
It is likely that drive has failed or is going into total failure.
You can purchase a replacement drive for $42 to $75 depending on size and whether you get the 5400 rpm or the 7200 rpm in a 40, 60, or 80 GB model.
You can obtain an adapter to put the drive into a desktop unit as a slave. The adapter converts the mobile 2.5" hard drive by adapting the pin set for the desktop EIDE cable. Adapters are available many places, including www.geeks.com, www.cyberguys.com, www.frys.com, www.outpost.com, and others... cheaply at $2.45 to $9.99 depending on where you get one.
Then you can usually drag and drop the data from the mobile drive to a desktop drive, or use drive recovery software, then you can burn a CD to then migrate it to your new drive... or just use a USB transfer.
( We work on a great number of the Presario 2500's with identical problems. Did you know there are 434 different models of the Presario 2500 series of laptops?)
With the new drive, you just use the recovery set that came with your laptop, or buy the set for about $30, including shipping, from the Compaq parts department.
But you likely will not ever be able to use that drive again. Thus, you do not want to stress it further by more restart or rescue attempts.

Hi all,

Can anyone suggest how to stop my CPU running intermittently at 100% please. I have scanned PC with MS Security Essentials, A-Squared Free, Spybot S&D and am running Windows Defender - nothing malicious found. Using Process Explorer, it showed many high SVCHost.EXEs running. I have manually turned some of these off now and CPU running at 30-60%. Not realy sure what I am doing and how to turn things off permanently - any suggestions greatly accepted!

PC has 1G of RAM and use an Intel 2.6Ghz Celeron processor - it's an old but useful laptop and would like to use it at it's normal speed again.

Many thanks.

M.

A:Compaq Presario 2500 CPU Running at 100%

Click start, run, type msconfig and press enter.

Under Startups, uncheck everything BUT your antivirus/firewall (if there)and close out.

Reboot and see how it operates for a day.

You may have to press a keyboard key to enable an external monitor. If you have already done this, the motherboard or CPU may be fried. Laptop motherboards and CPU are constantly subjected to overheating, specially if you place an operating laptop on a bed or carpeted floor often

Hi,

During the last few months, my laptop has been used a considerable amount. Unfortunately, my sister borrowed it while I was away at my orientation for college. She broke parts of the keyboard (the parts holding the key into place, and some other things), and I am currently using it mostly taped together. Lucky for me, the tape is holding and still working...

However, my dad who has been a computer guy for many years, wants to replace the keyboard unit, so that way when I get to college it won't be as bad.

The laptop itself is a couple years old, and I don't want to get a new one.

So I was wondering if there are any step by step tutorials for a Compaq Presario 2500. Any help would be much appreciated.

Upgraded my Presario 2568 to WinXP, everything works, except the on/off button for the integrated wireless lan (front right side near blue LED and IR). This worked before the upgrade from XPhome. There is a heading under Start Menu called Utilities:

Start Menu>Utilities>Wireless Configuration

There is a dialogue box that opens, and says "The following devices are controlled by the wireless on/off button. Click an icon below to turn one device on or off."

There is nothing in this list. Anyone know how to get the HP WLan 54g device listed in there?

A:Compaq Presario 2500 WLAN On/Off Button

Have you gone to the HP website and download all the updated XP Device Drivers? You may also want to check the FAQ on that site to see if its a known issue.

One last thing, Go into Control Panel -> System -> device manager and see if there's any missing drivers or errors.

Hi all. I'm new here but not what you would call new to computers. I have a Compaq Presarion laptop sitting behind me that is giving me fits! A friend of mine got it as a gift. Its got a 1.5 ghz celeron processor, 256 mb of ram, and a 40 gig hard drive.

Here's the problem. When he got it, windows was corrupted and wouldn't boot to windows without a ton of error messages. He told me to wipe the drive clean and re-install XP. He handed me a fresh, recently purchased version of Win XP home and told me to do away with HP's proprietary version of XP. I figured, easy enough. I've done this kind of thing many times with many older computers.

Well, here's the problem. It won't let me do a full format from the XP CD during the first few pages of setup. I can do a quick format of the drive and continue on. However, during setup, I get errors. I've formatted and reinstalled the OS several different times, not always getting the same error message. I completed the install once (with errors) and when I got to the desktop, there was no start button or system clock .... or even the usual recycle bin icon. Nothing was there .... I could ctrl+alt+delete to reboot, but that was the only way to shut the system down.

What is different about these compaq presario notebooks. How can you do a low level format .... or a full format for that matter. How can you get it to take a regular microsoft version of windows XP? I've already wasted countless hours fighting with this laptop.

A:Problems installing Win XP on Compaq Presario 2500 Laptop

Bump ... there appears to be no pattern to the errors I'm experiencing. Can anyone help?

The D: drive is a "restore partition" = RP. This is an exact image of your computer when you first bought it. To use it: When you first start the computer there will be a black screen with probably three different choices of keys to press. One of them will be something like system restore or restore. Hope you get the idea. Select the proper key and follow the onscreen prompts. One other option may be to go to the HP\Compaq (HP bought Compaq) site or call them. You may be able to get the discs for a small fee.

My parents bought a Compaq Presario laptop a few months ago and ever since we got it, it's been extremely slow. It's got Windows XP on it and after we click on whichever name we want to log on as, it literally can take up to about 7 minutes {if not longer} until it actually loads the desktop and everything. That's right, I kept track of time. Then, if we want to get on the internet {we have roadrunner} it takes even more time. I usually just sit there and watch a T.V. show while I wait for the home website to finally pop up.

I've tried a couple of things that I do to my own computer to make it faster, like going to msconfig and making sure the Startup List is unchecked. I also deleted those unnecessary things under IE-Tools-Internet Options like temporary internet files, cookies, history, etc. That makes my computer work better but when I try it on the laptop, it doesn't do a thing. It's still the exact same slow speed. I do have a Windows 2000 on my own computer and I've never worked with XP before so I don't know if there's a big difference there or what.

If anyone has had this problem or has any ideas on how to speed it up, that would be super!
Thank you!

What is the "sometimes it acts wierd" more specifically.
I wonder about your RAM. According to the specs link you gave your MOBO can only handle up to 1GB which is the minimum to run windows 7.
And it is usual for windows to slow down after time. I use 8GB RAM and a i5 processor but still I notice some slowdown to when I first got it, which is only a few months ago. Try clearing out all your temporary files etc. CCleaner is good for this.
You might want to clean out the dust accumulation inside and around the CPU, if you haven't done this recently.

Have you checked the temps? .... You can use SPECCY to check the system.

Hi,

Ever since I've bought this computer (beginning of 2009) my Compaq Presario CQ40 has been extremely slow. I don't really run much software on it, but it takes around 10-15 minutes to start up all processes.

I run Microsoft Security Essentials and Windows Firewall as security, but it previously had Trend Micro Internet Security in 2009.

I do Disk Cleanups, a full defrag through CMD and a chkdsk /r but it's still painfully slow.

The CPU fan is nearly always running all of the time, and after a quick Google this seems to be a problem in the Presario?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Andrew.

I have a Compaq Presario that has run very, very slow since I first plugged it in. I purchased it about 6 months ago from Best Buy. It takes about 5 minutes to start up and can take up to a minute to go from one program to another. I'm wondering if I need to add more memory or if I have a bunch of pre-installed programs that can be deleted to speed things up. Can someone help me out? If I'm in the wrong forum, I apologize.

Here are my system stats:

Intel Celeron D CPU 3.33 GHz
447 MB Memory
Windows Vista

The CPU came loaded with Vista, but I'm wondering it the system capacity is big enough to support it. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I'm helping a friend clean up her computer, from malware, viruses, to performance. I've done full scans with AVG and Malware Bytes, while also eliminating many unnecessary programs. The computer has improved 100% but I'm still struggling with single tasks such as opening Google Chrome, or Disk Defrag, for it takes 1-2 min. for them to open. Last night I couldn't even open Disk Defrag... Any suggestions? I could really use a bit of help. Also, there is only 2gb of RAM so it could very well be why everything is delayed...
My personal computer runs two 4GB ram sticks so Its not exactly something I should even compare it with.

I'd advise you to just have her save her personal files on a flash drive, and reinstall the operating system from scratch. You don't know how many files have been corrupted, it might take just as long to fix them as it is to do a total reinstall.

I was recently given a Compaq Presario CQ57 (300 Series)  by a friend running Windows 10 64 Bit.   Processor - AMD E-300 APU with Radeon HD Graphics 1.30 GHz It was running very slow so I upgraded the Hard Drive to an SSD and increased the RAM to 8GB. I then did a clean install of WIN 10 64 bit. While this has improved the speed a little bit it is nowhere near as fast as I would have expected.  The only software I am running at the moment is McAfee Anti-Virus and Firewall. Does anyone have any suggestions that could still be making it very sluggish. I gather that it is not possible to upgrade the processor. Thank you

Hi all,

Haven't had to use your services since around 2012, thankfully, but seem to have picked up something I can't shake thru conventional (for me) methods.

Symptoms : the laptop runs normally for the first 5 mins from startup, then suddenly each access to File Manager, or any page on the internet through Chrome, takes 10-15 times as long as normal. The hard disc seems to be running (flickering light) almost all the time, whether a page is being requested or not. Task Manager shows the CPU at around 64%, pretty much steadily, while idle.

Hardware : Compaq Presario CQ 81 laptop, running Windows 7.

History : no previous infections since 2012, when I installed Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and rid everything that infected the same hardware being used now. The Anti-Malware has been resident since then, showing no infections, until last week.
I have not downloaded and run any new programs in the last 2 weeks.
The hard drive is only 50% full, with plenty of space, and does not need de-fragging.
This is a home computer that has never run a game, nor very large apps, in it's life.
It mostly surfs the internet on demand, and is rarely left connected to the internet for more than 4-6 hours at a stretch.

Clean-up attempts so far :  I have run in Safe Mode - iExplore, JRT, Tdsskiller, AdwCleaner. Malwarebytes Anti-Malware found over 70 infection on the C: drive, and cleaned them all out. Subsequent runs in Safe Mode have found nothing. iExplore foun... Read more

I am experiencing a very slow bootup on a Compaq Presario V2000 laptop running Win XP Home. I've run the spyware scans and have actively been using Norton Antivirus 2006, until just uninstalling it this afternoon (hoping to speed up the boot). I notice that the icons in the system tray appear one by one, very slowly. Any feedback is appreciated.
Thanks!

Hello people.

I have some problems with my Compaq Presario 2500 (laptop); first, is hard to find information about its components making hard to find drivers; second, the BIOS setup lacks options (it only has 3 or 4) so I can't change almost anything important.
The probles started when I tried to play NFSPU2, I had only 256 ram back then, so the game ran slow in some situations, so I installed another 256 but the game stays the same, I know I have the required system because of the info with the game and the tool that searchs information on your pc so I don't know what's the problem. I did some test with some benchmark tools and everyone tells me that my memory has a discrepancy between what BIOS says and what Windows says; also, the CPU is like running very low for its specifications.
I put the results of the tool within the game for information:

A:Presario 2500 BIOS settings

You have a laptop computer, you are pretty much stuck with what you bought as what you will have for the life of the laptop. I have a Presario R3240US. Basically the only thing that I can "upgrade" is the memory. I can add more memory but that is about the only thing that can be changed. There are VERY few laptop computers that feature upgradable components such as video upgrades. Creative now has a sound card that you can use if you have a USB port and another that plugs in the PC card slot. That will not help speed up the computer however. You have two options, purchase another laptop with better specs (you will likely still have problems running most of the "high end" games) or use a desktop with upgrade capability to add what you need for gaming. I have a friend at work who is considering a "shuttle" sized computer that I told him about. It is small enough to be portable. It is still larger than a laptop and heavier. They can and do use mostly normal devices, sound card, video card etc.
P.S. I have been to Barcelona several times. Love the city and the country.

If keyboard is removed from the laptop it will still do an errorless boot and windows xp will show a keyboard plugged in and working fine. How does BIOS check out a keyboard that is not attached? What is going on and what can be done to get keyboard working? (It is a new kb from HP, same results with old one.) External keyboard aok and on screen keyboard aok. Thanks.

I have a compaq presario 2500, which was making alot of fan noise (usual) and cutting off unexpectedly (not usual), presumably due to heat, my CPU usage was constantly at 100% due to IE and computer running very slow

Before I get into what I have performed, I'll describe the computer's function now (after going through 5 steps)
-Computer now thinks the date is Thursday November 1,2007
-Whenever I would run a program the publisher would be unknown
-The settings on my computer keep resetting for example (and the only one I have noticed) the tapping function on the touchpad keeps getting turned back on upon restart although I manually turn it off, and I have never had that enabled
-Computer still shutting off,CPU will spike to 100% but relatively low CPU usage with one iexplorer running
-when I tried to run the dss.exe the program would have a problem and need to close, always when it was performing "packing up registry hives"

A:Compaq Presario SR1810NX Not Getting Past Compaq Logo Screen

Try a power drain.
1. Unplug power cord
2. Hold power button in for 60 seconds or more then let go
3. Plug in power cord
4. turn on the power and try to boot to setup (BIOS)

If it enters the BIOS then you should be able to just press F5 to reset to defaults and then F10 to save and exit. The PC should work now.

However, if after the power drain you still can not get in the BIOS than there is a MAJOR problem which would require some type of repair.

Yes, its possible, two screen screwups in one night. And with the same company too. My brother has a Compaq 2500 and yesterday, one of his fans on his heatsink went out. So, being the computer brother, I open up his laptop and unscrew everything to get to the fans(very very carefully), install the fans, put everything back together as it looked and turned the computer back on. The fans worked great, only I had a new problem. The screen was blank. Now, in my previous post, I mentioned how the backlight wouldn't work. Well, this was the opposite. The backlight worked perfectly, just that the screen wouldn't display anything. I was thinking, maybe its just the video component, not the screen. But, when I plugged in an external monitor, sure enough, the external worked and the internal didn't. Backlight works, no input from the computer. I reopened it and made sure all connections were secure. Any suggestions? (A hammer sounds really good, but its not my computer )

Hi everyone. Been all over the net researching and researching with obviously no luck. I desperately need the Network Controller for both my Compaq 2500 and 2100 laptops. I installed new internal network cards on both, and the computer says it reconizes the cards, and only says that the drivers are not installed. I tried to make XP find the drivers, and did everything I could, to no avail. This all happened AFTER I cleaned the HDD's in both laptops and installed fresh copies of XP's. I did not know XP were not detecting the network cards, and installed all of the programs necessary for work beforehand.
So therein lies the problem. Any ideas anyone? Thanks! If you need any othr info, just let me know.

Respectfully,

Hi

I just got a 2500 Server with 1G RAM and 6 9.1 Gb drives. However, it was wiped before I got it. I'm trynig to get it to boot so that I can install a server, but nothing seems to work right. Can't access BIOS, having trouble reading from disk drive, got part way through 2000 Server install and then wouldn't recognize CD.

Any thoughts. Any idea how to get into BIOS?

Please help.

A:Compaq Proliant 2500 Server Cannot Load OS / Boot Issues

Compaq BIOS setup is invoked by pressing F10 at bootup IIRC, the RAID/SCSI BIOS has its own key combination that is shown to you.

AFAIK you need to have the Compaq system partition for the embedded BIOS setup utility to work. If the hard drives were wiped, then you need to download the System Configuration Utility floppies from HP and use those. Or use the SmartStart CD that you hopefully got with the server. If not, then you could ask your local friendly HP representative for one.

A:Compaq Presario 600 ??

Compaqs usually have a hidden partition with all the factory loaded software on it in an image format. As long as it does and you can figure out how to access it you could probable do that - but you almost likely need the XP Product key and may need to reactivate XP after the recovery. XP can only be install on one machine at a time - so if they are still using it you are out of luck.

Watch the boot up for any recovery messages or take a trip to www.Compaq.com and look up the info for your make/model.

ok I hace a compaq that is all messed up. lets see one day the monitor would not work after a storm. Bought another, For a while the screen would be blue but change back to normal. The pc also would have a hard time starting up after it was in idle. We would do a hard start and for a while that worked. Now when I try to start it it turns on but the monitor says no vga/dvi input. There is also none of the preverable beeps that are supposed to be there so in short (well long)the motherboard is fried? So do I use it as a planter in the yard or is there a way to get it up and running. It runs on XP media center it has a micro ATX form factor motherboard it is also an AMD 64 Anthlon. ram is 256 mb 1Rx16 pc 4200 ddr2 533 mhz. With all that said can I just replace the motherboard and reinstall the reinstallation disks and be up and running? ( if it could only be so easy) What about the cpu. i know many questions here thanks for patients. Please help me. Tina

I friend of mine purchased this Presario in 2004. She hasn't had internet since about 2006, so she hasn't had any of the updates since then. I brought her tower home with me since I have internet to load her updates. We're trying to get it internet ready. When I brought it home last week nothing would open. So yesterday she gave me the system recovery disc. I started with the Standard Recovery, but there were too many files that it couldn't recover. So I then decided to do a full recovery. After the full recovery it was rebooting and it told me that not all the system could reload and I couldn't hit okaybecause it wouldn't read / acknowledge my mouse. So, I unhooked her computer and rehooked mine to see what her alternatives were. I found a website, they wanted to know all the things it wouldn't oload. All I can remember is that it was things that could me downloaded later like: Norton, AOL, Adobe, MSN, and QuickTime.

So, I unhoked mine and rehooked her's up (and booted up my laptop). When her's came back up it's saying: NTLDR is missing Pres Control + Alt +Delete to Restart

My question for you is there anyway I can save her conputer? She doesn't have a lot of funds, being a singe mother of a 7 yr old and I'm just a good friend trying to help her out.

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide

Hi All,

I used be pretty good with computers, but it's been a while! I have an ASUS laptop running Windows 7. It's worked great for the last year or so, but the last 6 months it's painfully slow doing anything on the laptop. I've checked a few things listed below, but the computer is still very slow.

Ran Malwarebytes / CC Cleaner - found no major issues
Internet is slow, but network utilization is < 5% and other machines on the same network are running fine
Only two programs installed on the laptop post purchase - AVG, Picasa, and Carbonite (only back-ups at night)
Running internet programs (e.g., IE, FF, Chrome) takes up ~35% of the CPU, even when idle
Ran msconfig and didn't see any odd or irregular programs running at startup.
Plenty of space available on the harddisk

Before I reformat the laptop, wanted to see if there's something else I should check/do? Thanks in advance for any help!

I've defragged the machine, cleaned up the disc and deleted any old programs. The laptop runs fine when started, so I ran a anti virus scan and Lavasoft Ad-were in safe mode and it picked up on various pieces. My friend at work is now as we speak running another spy ware/ad-ware program taht has picked up on various pits, but I have various processes in the task manager running under my username that i haven't started and Norton anti virus is not running at all.

Another small thing is I keep losing the battery icon from my taskbar and also a server busy/switch to error, but I can't find out what program this relates to, is this an indication of something else?

I think I've seen posts on here where people can upload a 'log' of what's going on etc.

What should I look at next? Should I completely uninstall norton even though it's cost me like ?40.

I just need pointing in the right direction.

Cheers

Hello Krawlspace and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. I don't see any signs of viruses or malware in the log. It is clean. My first thought would be that it is a Norton process that is scanning the mail storage. I would suggest posting this in the Windows XP Home and Professional forum and let the techs there analyze the running processes. Let them know that you have been to this forum and that no malware was found.Cheers.OT

Hey everyone! I've got a problem and I dont know what the cause may be, or how to attempt to locate it. Issue is that system is being generally slow in almost everything.

Firefox freezes/hangs up(specially when finishing up downloads), file explorer takes up to a min sometimes to open a folder, right click menu takes time to popup, start menu takes several seconds to come up, it takes several minutes to shutdown PC, ect..

Programs I run, such as audio editing, games, ect often hangs up aswell. I run microsoft antivrius, which is far from best, yet it showed PC as clean.. This aint much info, but I doubt I can provide more unless asked about specific details..

I am using Windows7 64bit, Nvidia gtx260 card, 4gb ram, and i5. The hdd the system is on is several years old, about 3-4. Im using Microsoft security essential as antivirus, together with ad-aware.

Thanks for any tips!

Hi,

Go to start menu and type perfmon /report. It will record your systems performance for 60 seconds. Once it has finished go to File -> Save as.
Then zip the file and upload it to your next post.

Also, What brand and model is your hard drive?

Regards,

A:Computer Generally Slow

Does the computer run fine after you shut it down and restart it, then become slower as the day goes on?

Based on just the number of windows, documents and programs you generally have open, it's only natural for your computer to begin running slow after a while, even with the 12GB of system memory installed. When you've got that many applications and services running on a computer all day, eventually your virtual memory and your system memory are going to become full, and this will cause the problems you are experiencing. Rebooting will clear the memory, but once the PC runs again for a while with all those programs open and running, the problem will return.

My advice is to close out programs, tabs and documents you aren't using, and be sure to shut down the PC from time to time. If the problem persists when you have a minimal number of instances open and running, then I would suggest running some diagnostics. But for now, I'd say there's probably nothing really wrong with the machine, you're just working the system and virtual memory too hard.

Hi Krawlspace. If you post a HijackThis log in any other forum it will be moved to this forum. This is the only forum where HijackThis logs can be anaylzed.

Since the log shows no signs of viruses or malware HijackThis will not be of much help in resolving any issues. It is only used for malware analysis and removal. Performance issues are handled by the techs in the XP forum. When posting there, give a detailed description of the issue, what (if anything) has been done to check/verify/resolve it and any other information that would be helpful to the techs. Let them know that you have been to this forum and that no malware was found, but do not post a HijackThis log in that forum. If you do, it will simply be moved back over to this forum.

Cheers.

Hello! I am attempting to change a 80mm fan in my Compaq computer. The fan I want to change is, I believe, called the CPU fan. It has a lever next to it and 4 screws holding it down. My question is this: Do I have to move the lever on the side of the fan in order to pull the fan up and proceed to remove the screws or do I just remove the 4 screws?  Also, how do I remove the screws considering the awkward position they are in? (I've been working on trying to remove the screws; however, it is difficult to maneuver the screwdriver into the top of the screws to remove them. This is because part of the fan case is above the screws making it necessary to place the screwdriver sideways in order to remove the screws.) Thank you for your response.

The led light that says that it is pluged in is on but now it is not charging the battery. I can get it to come on enough to hear that it is running but it is not booting and the screen remains black. I contacted that previous owner but she said she never had any problems with it. I want to see if it can be fixed, cheeply if possible, befor I do anything else. Thanks for the help.

A:compaq presario 1200

Sounds like your gonna have to get you hands dirty and take the cover off. Remove the cover and start pulling out parts. ;-)

The best way to troubleshoot a machine is to only boot with the bare requirements.

CPU, RAM, VIDEO CARD...over course power supply...

I'd take out all other parts and PCI card, remove all hard drive cables and floppy cables. Take note which way the RED LINE goes when you put it back together...

If you have MOVED the computer recently, IE transported the computer in the back of your car truck, you might want to try and RESEAT the video card, and RAM. Shipping a computer in the mail and it arriving DOA at the customer more than likely points to a video card that needs to be reseated. Lucky for us, most new motherboard come with AGP slot lock thank goodness...

Can't be done. It is probably some proprietary motherboard if it's a Pentium. If the motherboard is ATX you might....I said might be able to upgrade to a newer ATX motherboard. You will also need a new Power Supply, processor, memory and possible new graphics adapter.

Hello all,

My 92-year-old grandfather -- who lives on a little island off the coast of Maine -- has emailed me regarding a problem that he is having with his ten-year old computer. If anyone out there would be kind enough to offer some advice on how to fix it, it would be greatly appreciated. There are no computer shops on the island, but my grandfather has plenty of tools and has worked extensively with radios throughout his life, so with some direction I have little doubt that he can make the repair.

This is an unconventional post, to be sure, and I don't really know anything about his computer ... but I think he has done a reasonable job describing the issue:

Hi Chris!
I have a severe computer trouble that I brought on myself.
First I will describe the computer and it's programs.
It is a Compaq, Presario 1200,
at least 10 yrs old.
Along the front edge of the top it has three indicator lights at the
left of center and three on the right.

The ones on the left are operating lights of which one shows when
the charger is in and the left most one shows when the computer is
started up by the button which is in front of the screen.
The one between these two shows the operating conditions, I believe,
as it usually flickers in concert with whatever is going on.
The three on the right each has a "locked padlock" symbol.
For programs it has Windows 98, Juno V.4, Intel Create and Share
and some other good things.
Everything has been working good.
I do... Read more

Hello;

I have had a Compaq Presario 1500 laptop for about 2 years now, and I am quite un-satisfied when it comes to multi-tasking several applications at the same time. Sometimes it is so slow that I cannot minimize a full-screen application to read up on something on the net. I currently only have 256 megs of ram, but I read on the internet that tihs model could have up to 1 gigabyte. This is great, but therein lies my question. The laptop has two ram slots, one of which has been empty since i got the computer. Could I get a gig of ram and still keep the 256y meg stick as an added boost? or is the 1 gig the maximum for both slots?

A:Compaq Presario RAM upgrade

Well if your laptop supports a maximum of 1gb then that means 512mb per RAM slot.
Here are a few links on Newegg which is the Maximum Memory you could get for your Laptop. This is if you are in USA

Hello,

I have a Compaq Presario 1247 Notebook (laptop) with Windows 98 Second Edition with a 4.3 Gigabyte hard drive that was logically partitioned into 2 drives (C: and D: ). Earlier this year I used my CD Burner to copy all of the Quick Restore files from the D: Drive to a blank CD-ROM (CD-RW) disk and then removed the partition from the hard drive with a program from the Compaq Website. My CD-Burner is connected to my Notebook via a PCMCIA USB 2.0 Card, it has 2 USB Ports on it, one port is being used by my CD-Burner the other port is not being used.

Last Friday (09-24-2004) my Notebook caught a virus while I was on the internet and it was corrupted. MS Windows Explorer error message came up when I tried to look at my hard drive. The error message also came up when I rebooted, therefore no desktop icons appeared. So I reformatted the hard drive C: and put the Quick Recovery CD-ROM Disk in the internal CD-ROM drive. However, the Quick Recovery Disk displayed a message that it could not find the Quick Restore files and to contact Compaq Customer Support. I reformatted my hard drive again this time with the /quick format switch and /make system disk switch and then copied all the files and subdirectories from the Quick Recovery CD to my hard drive. Now before I even tried to run FDISK to repartition my hard drive into 2 logical drives I thought I would put the CD (CD-RW) containing all of the Quick Restore files and subdirectories that I burned earlier this year (before I r... Related to the problem that I posted about here: http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic141683.html, this is a little more urgent. The Compaq will frequently, sometimes regularly lock up: screen freezes, neither mousepad nor keyboard respond, and the harddisk parks the heads. Lately, it locks up when it's on the charger, and then is fine (at least, so it seems) when on battery-power. It's also sensitive to being touched--not bumped, it's that unpredictable. Sometimes, I can move it around without problem, other times, if I even touch it, it freezes.

The fans still run like normal, so I don't think that it's overheating. I'm afraid it's a motherboard issue, which I wouldn't be surprised at, considering that it's about 6 years old.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Is there really 2 quick restore discs or did that guy have no idea what he was talking about? Also can i just use the 1 quick restor disc to put in a new hard drive and get my comp running again?

Hello:
I'm making some changes to a compaq presario 4660 (dinosaur) and it's running windows 98. I cannot get into bios. F2, F1, delete and Tab do not get me in. I searched on google and really didn't receive good results. Well it did say that F2 would get me in, but it does not. Seemed to me there was another way to get into bios?

A:Ok new laptop compaq presario

You may need to disable the original webcam

You can disable it by going to: Device Manager (Start->Run-> Devmgmt.msc)

Then locating your Webcam (that you don't want to use) and then right click on it and select disable

Then go back to MSN and use the settings to set up the new webcam

A:Compaq Presario Vista

1. turn on computer and tap on F11 repeatedly until the Compaq screen disappears
2. click Advanced Options
3. select system recovery (may say restore the computer to factory settings)
and click recover without backing up files, click next

It will do the rest on its own.

Do this with ONLY mouse, keyboard, monitor and power attached. If you added any parts inside other than ram you will need to remove them to ensure it works properly.

Thats all!

I have a compaq presario c300 notbook. It will not boot. I get the compaq screen, then nothing. It will not boot to the cd either. The backlight comes on, so it's not that. Please help. I'm lost.

A:compaq presario c300

Welcome to TSF....

To get it to boot from the cd you have to change the boot order in BIOS. This can be done during boot up when you can open the BIOS and set it.

The cd you used is it the recovery cd for the computer?

I just bought and set up a new computer system, and am now trying to get my old one to boot, so that I can migrate the files needed for the new system. The monitor doesn't come on, and all I'm getting is a fast blinking green light on the tower. I've un/replugged all cables and power cords, and I know the monitor is OK because it belongs to my husband's matching computer, but my old one won't boot.

Help!!!

A:Compaq Presario won't boot!

I'm desperate, guys! Is there any other information I can give you to help resolve my problem? I have the Easy Transfer Cable for Vista all ready to go (and the software loaded in the old computer before I disconnected it and moved it to the card table), but I can't get my Compaq to boot.

If you can't help me, I guess I'll take it to Best Buy tomorrow and let the Geek Squad have at it...

I have a problem with my laptop screen. The screen is dark, however, the data is still there. Can't turn lamp on, or change anything, but can hook up to a monitor and it works. Can I fix the screen to work again? If I hit the button that turns the screen off and closes the computer down, the picture pops up for a few seconds and it is slightly red.

A:Compaq presario R3000

Its most likely that the backlight has failed. It can be fixes but it costs a upwards of $100 to do by a professional. You could try buying the parts online and doing it yourself though if you are technically inclined.

I'm trying to reformat my mom's old Compaq Presario SR1303WM. I've set it to boot from the cd-rom and I almost had it. But after deleting the partitions and starting a clean install it would only load the programs to 20%. After that it locked up and wouldn't do anything. I had to shut down and restart.

Now, it won't load from anything. Of course the old OS is gone so it won't start up on the hard drive and it won't boot from the cd. It just keeps going to a black screen with "Error Loading Operating System". Can someone please help me. I know they can't get a new computer and I just want to get a new install on this one to speed it up for them. They had a ton of malware and such on it.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Since HP now owns Compaq, I am not sure what kind of cds you have in order to attempt recovery.
Per HP Support

HP computers that ship with Microsoft Windows XP do not come with recovery CDs. Instead, they use a hidden space (partition) on the hard drive to store the recovery information. The use of a separate partition provides a convenient process that eliminates the use of recovery discs that may be lost or scratched. A system recovery from the hard drive may not be possible in some circumstances. Your computer may contain Recovery Disc Creation software. Recovery discs for Windows XP are available from HP for a minimal cost. See Obtaining Recovery Discs for ordering information.Click to expand...

What kind of disk are you using to attempt restore, and are you using HP's support page?
Are you still set to boot from CD and to attempt to do so FIRST?
Is your BIOS properly identifying your hard drive?
What happens if you unplug the data cable from the hd before trying to boot to cd?
Do you have the "Recovery Console" option at some point during boot?

I have a Compaq Presario 2700T with problems. When I press the start switch it runs for about five seconds and then shuts off. It doesn't even run long enough to give me any screen image. It does this on every attempt to start the computer now. Prior to that it flashed a blue screen on a previous start attempt but not long enough to read what it said.
Any ideas what is going on?

I took the keypad off and found the heatsink and fan loose from the motherboard. The four soldered nuts that the heatsink and fan mounting plate screw onto are broken off from the motherboard. I am not sure if this is what is causing the problem but it's not good. I tried to start the computer while holding pressure on the loose mounting plate but it did not make any difference.

Hey everyone I am having the same problem again as I was having before with my Compaq Presario 5000. It seems to just freeze up when I am on it or not. Sometimes I try to move the mouse to get back into Windows from the screen saver and it does nothing. At all! And sometimes in the middle of surfing the web and listening to music it just freezes up again and I have to hit the power button just to get it back up and running. Can anyone help out with this? I was asked to run MemTest before but I have no idea how to do this, so could someone help out? Also, since I am not a complete newbie, but darn close when it comes to the whole hardware side of computing, how can I tell what is causing interference with what when it comes to the hardware I am running and wether or not the latest drivers are installed? Thanks again and hope to get this resolved quickly.

Backlight is out no doubt, screen look fine with flash light held up to it? Not much you can do for that, doubtful you can replace that unless you are pretty seriously technical.

Hiya and welcome to Tech Support Guy

I've removed your email address, as we reply to the forum, and putting it up may give you spam.

Can you explain a bit more on what you're trying to do? You say open it, do you mean log on?

I have a Compaq Presario 7588
serial number: 8011dcw41090
With Pentium III 550Mhz processor I hear that I can up grade the processor to 1100 Mhz but I still need some information a bout the processor like the type of socket and the cache memory and if I can just buy a processor and install it normally without contacting Compaq service

A:compaq presario 7588

You'd probably need a Socket 370. I don't think the Tualatin based P3's would work for you. They are the ones with 512k L2 cache. You'd need a regular Coppermine based P3. (256k L2)

I have a compaq Persario M2000. The other day, I was using the touch pad to move and it just shut off. I tried to turn it back on and nothing happens. When I look at the AC adaprter led it is not turned on and it is plugged in. I removed the battery and tried the same with no luck. the ac adapter led is still not light up. The battery is fully charged, and when i try just that nothing happens. I opened it up and removed the bios battery and checked the chips and circuits. nothing seems out of place ot burnt. I used a multi meter to check the power button and it is getting power, as well as the curcuits in the ac adapter
can someone help me or give me some ideas what my nxt step is?
thanks

I had similar problems with compaq laptops - it's the power supply in your laptop - the repair for that is about $300+

check your warranty before doing anything else...

Right heres a very specific enquiry...

I have a Compaq Presario SR2125UK

Im looking to upgrade the graphics to a BFG 8800 GTS OC 320MB or the 640mb.

First question is can my processor handle it? (Intel Pentium D 915)

I know i have to upgrade the ram so im purchasing 4GB of DDR2 RAM for about £50 and im replacing the PSU probably with an OCZ Stealth 600W PSU. Do that sound viable? Ive only got 32bit windows so i know im loosing out on some ram but its a package deal lol.

I have tried reading into all the requirements for these upgrades such as power connectors from PSU to graphics card and motherboard and think i got a bit lost.

The BFG requires 12v of something which the OCZ provides along with more than enough power (425w required for BFG), plus both the motherboard and the PSU are PCI express compatible. And i have an extra slot to accommodate the doubledecked size of the BFG.

In terms of the required power connectors i was a bit lost. The OCZ said it has a 6/8 PCI express pin which is what the BFG requires but can somebody shed some light on this?

But im really just concerned that it was going to fit and work!

These purchases come to around about £150 so dont want to be thinking for another 100 squid i could have just bought a XBox 360! lol

Basically Im asking advise on the above upgrade decisions and any tips anyone has on installing these?

Any help would be appreciated, im sick of only being able to run pre-2005 games on a pc bought in 2007! I was pretty suc... Read more
