greek file paths problem

Q: greek file paths problem

Hello everyone! New here with this problem, hope I'm entering it under the right category (if not, sorry)

I have a local and a network folder embeded in a tiddlywiki page in iframes.
They both contain folders, .doc and .xls files with both greek and english names.
I've set up the open office plugin to show the aforementioned files within browser, so the frames work as
a sort of view area ( ).

At the same time I need to be able to open the folders / files in their native windows environment.
The above configuration doesn't allow that as .doc and .xls links open in the open office environment by default.

A number of firefox add-ons (Open With 4.0 /,
IE Tab 2 / provide the functionality to open firefox links in different browsers and/or programs.

I've set up explorer, winword.exe and excel.exe as manual entries in the Open With add-on which allows you to right click on firefox links and select to open them with these applications. Other add-ons allow you to do the same thing with internet explorer or a chosen application.

They all present the following problem:

The plugin works perfectly when opening the folder file:///C:/a with explorer
and the files file:///C:/a/a.doc with winword and file:///C:/a/a.xls with excel.exe.

But I get a path does not exist or is not a directory error when trying to open the folder file:///C:/α (greek character) with explorer.
When opening file:///C:/α/α.doc with winword.exe I get a blank word document
and when opening file:///C:/α/α.xls with excel.exe I get a file could not be accessed error in excel,
asking to make sure that the file exists, it's not read only, the file name does not contain illegal characters
and the file path does not contain more than 218 characters. When ok-ing that I get a blank excel document.

If so chosen by the firefox options menu the files with greek file paths / names open ok when left clicked via the firefox default applicatiions (tested with word/excel/open office).

The above have been tested with FF 3.5.9 and 3.6.3 in Win XP Home Greek and
Win XP Pro English.

According to firefox support this is a windows issue (thus I'm placing the question under the XP category).

I've tried right clicking, copying the link location and pasting them in the start > run application

the folder file:///C:/a gets translated to file:///C:/a (the same) and opens ok. The same happens with
file:///C:/a/a.doc and file:///C:/a/a.xls

but the folder file:///C:/α gets translated to file:///C:/%CE%B1,
and the files file:///C:/α/α.doc and file:///C:/α/α.xls get translated to
file:///C:/%CE%B1/%CE%B1.doc and file:///C:/%CE%B1/%CE%B1.xls respectively
and they don't work in windows (path does not exist error).

Same thing happens when pasting the links in windows explorer or the respected applications (ms-word / ms-excel). Yet they all work ok if typing the path in the run application or explorer etc

Any ideas? Since the above functionality is absolutely essential
for a project I'm working on, any help would greatly appreciated.

Thank you all in advance

Hello, I know (am pretty sure >.<) that there is a way to do this.

I am trying to set a file path for a folder, but I need the folder to go to the current username, instead of my username. For example..

C:\Users\Matt\Documents\ - Is my current path

I want it to be C:\Users\*THEIR USER NAME*\Documents\

You can use the path below for a universal profile path instead.

I use WinAso Registry Optimizer; when I run it my computer crashes when it gets to Invalid File Paths, but when I remove the invalid file paths flag, it completes the process just fine. I would like some advice on correcting invalid file paths...thanks.

A:Invalid File Paths

Don't use registry cleaners. If you continue to use them, chances are that crashes will be among the least of your problems. Those things are junk, do only harm, and you should be thankful you were even able to reboot. Performance is not improved by using them, they remove needed entries, and they create their own "errors" so that they can "fix" them, making worse errors in the process.

A little background first.

I have a shortwave radio that is of a new type where a lot of the functions such as filters, etc. is done via software that resides on the PC.

The radio is mfg. by the WINRADIO company.
The model of the radio is a G31 DDC

After playing with the radio, it automatically Saves the frequencies that you have listened to, and puts them into Memory to be able to recall them later.
The file that it creates is called "User Memory"..

I seem to have the User Memory File in the right place, I think, but the "path" to get there seems to be different.

I have one path of:
Libraries/ Documents/ WINRADIO/ G31 DDC/ User Memory

And another path of:
C:/ Users/ Bob/ My Documents/ WINRADIO/ G31 DDC/ User Memory

They both seem to lead to the correct file of User Memory.

a. My main question: Is there really only one file of User Memory, but two different ways or paths to get to it ?

b. What's with Libraries; I've never set that up ? What are they ?

c. Notice that one path has My "Documents", and the other just "Documents".

If anyone could explain this for me, I would be most appreciative.

Much thanks,

So I've been trying to use system file checker, and encountered a problem where it can't repair a file. I found this page detailing how to manually fix the problem:

Use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on Windows 7

I was fine until step 2, where it says

"For example, type takeown /f E:\windows\system32\extremely_simplified_example.dll"

The problem is, my CBS.log file says stuff like:

Cannot repair member file [l:24{12}]"FWPKCLNT.SYS"
Unable to repair \SystemRoot\WinSXS\Manifests\\[l:24{12}]"FWPKCLNT.SYS"

and I don't know how to translate that into a path to use with the takeown command. I searched for that file using explorer and found a dozen different copies, so I'm not sure which one to replace.

Semi-related questions: Can I just replace them all? I'm planning on using a copy of the file from a similar system that works, is that ok?

A:Help understanding CBS.log file paths

Hello Southbound, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Those instructions there are fine, but just a bit vague. OPTION THREE in the tutorial below can help give you only the SFC results to help make it easier to go through.SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker
Next, the tutorial below can show you how to extract files from your installation disc to replace any listed files that SFC cannot repair.Extract Files from Windows 7 Installation DVD
Before doing anything, please post back and upload your sfcdetails.txt file to see what all may be wrong, and if it any file that cannot be repaired is worth worrying about.Screenshots and Files - Upload and Post in Seven Forums
To help interrupt what it says to know the path:Cannot repair member file [l:24{12}]"FWPKCLNT.SYS"
Unable to repair \SystemRoot\WinSXS\Manifests\\[l:24{12}]"FWPKCLNT.SYS"
The first line says that SFC cannot repair the FWPKCLNT.SYS file.

The second line is the path of the file. "SystemRoot" is a variable "%SystemRoot%" that is actually just a shortcut for "C:\Windows". This leaves you with the file path as:C:\Windows\WinSXS\Manifests\FWPKCLNT.SYS
Doing a search on the C: drive for the listed FWPKCLNT.SYS file would help give you all of it's locations if needed as well.

Hope this helps for now,

Do yourself a favor, and if a registry cleaner offers to do something you don't understand, decline. It's far easier to clean the system to death than to actually fix something with a registry cleaner.

I've had the asian language pack installed on my laptop for awhile now and I know of a similar issue that involves the Korean won symbol, fortunately that never happened to me and I use my computer to type Korean frequently. I was attempting to get a program to run in Japanese to help out one of my friends, and after a restart; anywhere there's a file path it shows the ￥ instead of \.

I know there's no difference aside from appearance, but it's really annoying to look at it.

I've uninstalled the program and looked around the Regional and Language options, policy settings, and about anywhere I can think of, maybe I missed it somewhere, but I can't find a way to revert it. Can anyone help? Thanks.

I have a program that plays music on VB 2008 Express Edition. It accesses music from my memory stick because I'm going to need to move the program to another computer. However, the memory stick was always listed under the J:\ drive, but now randomly it's listed under the K:/ drive. Is there a way so that I can just get the music "into" the program so that it can just play the music no matter what computer it is on. P.S. I also need to get this program to run on XP, and the file path is E:\, I'm afraid that since mine changed randomly, the XP computer I'm moving it to will also change randomly.

Please Help!

A:Partitioning hard drives and file paths

Well, yes if you use a program like Partition Magic that does non-destructive partitioning you can then id the partition as F, and not have lost your paths.

I guess this may be a tiny bit off the subject here, but I am attempting this in windows 7.

I have a program file manager tool called 'Directory Opus' that is capable of calling windows external programs and passing them the current directory the file manager is sitting on.

So far so good.

Now I want to call a cygwin (linux/unix emulator for windows) terminal with that file manager.

Checking properties on the cygwin Icon I got the path: C:\cygwin\bin\mintty.exe -i /Cygwin-Terminal.ico -

So it is a path to a command and an argument to that command.

Actually I guess it is 2 arguments to a command since I think '-' in that position means to feed anything on STDIN to the command. At least that would be true in unix shell programming.

So using the Directory opus setup I pass this call:
[email protected]:C:\cygwin\bin\mintty.exe -i /Cygwin-Terminal.ico - <and here add {s}>'

So the call ends up:
[email protected]:C:\cygwin\bin\mintty.exe -i /Cygwin-Terminal.ico - {s}'

That call does just what it is supposed to. It passed the current file absolute address however cygwin terminal does not understand the windows path notation. If I were passing it: C:\subdir\blah\ It would just say 'No such file' Cygwin terminal wants to see /cygdrive/c/subdir/blah Or at least I think that is what is happing.

So to cut to the chase.... I'd like to put a little wrapper to Cygwin terminal in there with the code necessary to convert 'C:\subdir\blah\' to '/cygdrive/c/subdir/blah/'

But, I do not know how ... Read more

I mistakenly deleted the contents of a user's account folder and was unable to replace the sub-folders manually or by pasting empty ones from another account. If I try to use the account to save files, I just get an error message saying that the folder xxx or file path doesn't exist, depending on where I am trying to save them. This is not just a long filename error and I am afraid that I have caused problems for the user that would affect any Windows 8 account he opens in future, because of Microsoft syncing. What do you suggest?

I'm having an issue with Windows Media Player for Windows 7.

I imported a bunch of playlists and their associated music files from an XP machine to my new Win7 machine, and some of the music files aren't playing - Media Player simply says that there was "an error" with no further explanation given, but this error only occurs with files with a certain file path.

On my XP machine a large chunk of my music files were located in C:\Documents and Settings\[my name]\My Documents\My Music\[artist name]\[song title] as .wma files. I know that in Win7 the Documents and Settings subdirectory was replaced by Users or something - that's not the real problem, because for all my other music files, the file paths as shown in my WMP playlists will adjust themselves automatically and play the music files correctly no matter where the files are moved. My issue stems from the fact that WMP is not correcting the file paths for the files located in Documents and Settings the way it is for all the other files. There is no way to edit the file paths in WMP, or I would have tried that.

This is not the first time I've moved my XP playlists to a Win7 machine, but on my previous attempts I have had no problem simply copying all my music to one folder and playing them in WMP. So I'm not sure why it's not working this time.

I would prefer to avoid rebuilding all my playlists by hand - I really don't think that should be necessary, since as I said I've moved all my data from an XP to a W... Read more

I am currently using Skydrive to synchronize files and folders between my home and office computers. I created an Excel file which has hyperlinks linking to files located under the same folder as the Excel file on the local hard disk.
In the past I was using Excel 2010 and the synching would work fine. I would open the excel file in any of the two computers and when I clicked on the hyperlinks the file stored on the local hard disk would open. Recently I purchased Office 360 and suddenly the paths in the hyperlinks linking to the files were changed from a local relative location I.e. \test.xlsx! to a cloud address I.e. On top of that even if I click on the hyperlink the file does not open.
Also Skydrive keeps creating copies of the files at random with the name of the computer where it was modified at the end I.e. test-Home-PC.xlsx.

Anybody know the reason for this and a way around it?

In C:\Documents and Settings\User I have 2 folders:

Start Menu

The files within the Start Menu folder, as an example, have the path: C:\Documents and Settings\User\Start Menu.

If I rename the Start Menu folder to, say, xxxxStart Menu, and view path of the files in the folder again, the path remains the same C:\Documents and Settings\User\Start Menu instead of what I expected to be C:\Documents and Settings\User\xxxxStart Menu

The same applies for Favorites.

Additionally, I can leave the renamed xxxxStart Menu folder in Documents and Settings\User and create a new folder of the same name (xxxxStart Menu) and it allows me to do this--even though both names are the same!

1) Is this normal?
2) Why is this?
3) Are these some kind of "special" folders that Windows XP treats differently?
4) Why doesn't this happen for other folders like Desktop, Cookies, Local Settings, SendTo, and Application Data?

Hello All,
Please understand the scenario.

"We are developing a web based software that is used in FleetServices to process some driver and vehicle files, that contains activities (like driving, rest etc.). So the problem is that when i got a (driver/vehicle) file in German language and i try to transfer it to server, it fails if my regional setting is set to Greek Language. But i am able to transfer (driver/vehicle) file if my OS's Regional setting is other than Greek."

So my question is that why German language is not supported by operating system only if my regional setting is Greek (it is working fine if regional setting is other than Greek).

Is there a bug in Windows XP or Visual Studio 8 or we are doing something wrong.

If there German language is not supported by Greek OS then please refer my some url where such information is available which clearly speaks that this scenario is not at all supported. If it is supported then please tell me how to support it.

I would be very-very thankful to you.

It was running OK, but getting a bit old and a bit slow. I upgraded to a W7 desktop, but wanted to keep this one playing around with.

Ran System Recovery 2 or 3 times using the Alt-F10 method. First time, I wanted to avoid loading bloatware so ran msconfig early on, went to Startup to uncheck Acer Launch and stuff like that. Windows Update worked until SP1. Just couldn't get SP1 to install, including when I downloaded it from the web.

Then I ran System Recovery and let the bloatware run. It stalled at 9/11. Again, Windows Update worked until SP1.

Then I tried System Recovery using discs, instead of Alt-F10. It failed for some reason. I have a couple other System Recovery discs from an laptop and an eMachine laptop. I tried them with the same result. Recovery starts, writes over the C drive, then fails.

The message is:
The system registry contains invalid file paths. Installation cannot proceed. This system image was applied without guaranteeing that drive-letter assignments would match across computers.

So now I'm stuck.

I googled the error message, but generally ended up in discussion boards that are over my head. I think I saw some discussion about partition. A:Vista System Recovery failure - "system registry contains invalid file paths" - canno

The vista image extracts to the temporary drive letter D.

If you use a regular installation dvd and MS standard setup.exe, it will fix the os registry letter correctly. (Defaults to the first letter i.e. C as A and B are reserved for floppies )

If you are trying to restore from a factory image, you will have trouble because there is now another os on the machine.

I have a script I use for it.

You could get it to work , but it is a lot of mucking around.

It is just easier to use a Vista install dvd ( not the same as your factory recovery image ), boot it up, and install to your desired partition.

Hi all
I recently bought a FUJITSU-SIEMENS notebook (I live in Greece).
While I was told I could have the XP operating system in English, it is actually in Greek and the company refuses to "overwrite" the Greek OS with English.
My question is can I use ENGLISH OFFICE or will this block my PC from working properly?

A:Greek Office

Not positive, but pretty sure you can.
The experience I've had was with Japanese Microsoft OS and installing English versions of various software. Ran just fine.

There also was a hidden software "switch" (not so much hidden, but not well known) to alternate the display from the Japanese characters where the OS messages shown through, to the English messages. See if there is a similar Greek backdoor.

I did not particularly like the Japanese/English combination, but it was workable.

Try and install the English application on your Greek OS, can't hurt to try. You'll be told during the install if it won't go.

2) if I set that option to Greek, I get different characters - ones with accents (different sorts), double-dots, etc - looks pretty foreign but it is not Greek!!

My print font currently is Arial. I use Printer.print <string> to print.

Any suggestions?

Got some nasty stuff here. This computer was used online without virus protection, and it picked up all kinds of interesting stuff. When I first started messing with it, it would automatically open internet explorer and go to a music purchase site. Also, it would not open taskmanager, nor could it run hijack this or msconfig. I changed the name of hijack this, and it would then run. I installed BitDefender AV and ran a scan. It found numerous viruses and either removed them or quarantined them. Still had the same problem. Ran hijack this and fixed several things including an apparently bogus file named "msconfig32.exe" Things seemed to get a little better but still had major problems. Ran spybot s&d to no effect. After searching online, I began to suspect that it was the Vundo trojan. I downloaded Symantec trojan.Vundo Removal Tool. It did fix some things including a couple of BHOs, but it reported the computer did not have Vundo. The browser hijack problem stopped, but now, after a few minutes online, BitDefender pops up and says it blocked some virus - always appearing in C:\Windows\system32. It seems like new names always keep coming up for both the virus and the file name (however Trojan.Downloader.ConHook.M seems to be the most common, also have seen Backdoor.RBot.840CA203; file names include sstqo.exe, jkhec.exe, and tftp3088).

Here is the info if anyone would be kind enough to help me get rid of this junk:

I downloaded some .mp3 files.

When I play them in Winamp or QMPlayer, the filenames are in what looks like Greek although some parts of the filenames are in English. In Explorer and Total commander the filenames are in English.

OK so I rename the files using the convention I employ for music. The changed filenames stick in Explorer and TC, but on playing them the filenames have not changed in the players. Deleting the playlist and reloading it has no effect on the players' ideas as to what the filenames are.

I even copied one of the files to a temporary directory with a completely different filename, but it still opened in the players with the old filename.

What is happening here?

I've figured out that this is caused by the tags in the .mp3s and has nothing to do with the filenames.

We are using Outlook 2007 on Exchange 2007.

I am in USA (Minnesota) and we are getting some emails from Australia that are coming in encoded as Greek (ISO). These emails will show up as jumbled garbage or completely blank.

We have a workaround to change them from Greek (ISO) to Western European (Windows) by opening the email going to "Other Actions" -> "Encoding" and changing it from Greek (ISO) to Western European (Windows).

Another workaround is to use OWA (Outlook Web Access) insted of the outlook client. OWA shows the message properly, but I suspect that is because it's using the regional settings in IE.

I was wondering if there is anyway to force convert incoming emails to Western European (Windows)? Either on the exchange side or Outlook client.

In my work computer (Windows 10 Pro 64-bit) I noticed a strange phenomenon. When I switch keyboard layout to Greek in order to type Greek in Google or elsewhere, it types strange symbols instead of the actual character! This happens in every website when I try to type data in a box or wherever else. If I write the text in Notepad or elsewhere and I copy-paste, it is OK. The problem is I cannot type directly in Greek. The keyboard produces symbols instead of Greek characters! This problem is only in IE 11, in Google Chrome I can type OK.

Please don't tell me to use another browser! Give me a solution. It might be some setting since I don't have this problem at home (see my specs).

Thank you.

A:Symbols instead of Greek text when typing in a box IE 11

After examining carefully all settings, I wasn't sure if the advanced settings were correct or screwed. So I decided to reset the advanced settings to default. This did the trick. It could be something with UTF8, but not sure. Resetting to default cancelled any wrong setting and now it works OK.

PS: I didn't change anything else, only reset the advanced settings to default. That's for anyone having the same issue.

When I opened up my Youtube download app the wording in the Search box was in Greek. I haven't used the app for some time, but it has never had any Greek words in it before.

Not so odd as it might seem since I am actually in Greece but I have always had my location and language set to UK as I'm English and my Greek isn't too good.

Also, the app wouldn't load and minimised to the taskbar. I tried to load it a couple of times with no success.

I thought the best option would be to uninstall and reinstall the app, so I right clicked on the tile and chose to uninstall. I then opened the Store and found that some of the wording here was in Greek (see attachment below).

As you can see the menu bar is in Greek, and on the Store home page most menu items are in Greek. But curiously the login screen is not.

I went into Location in the Control Panel and found this was set to Greece (I have no idea when this changed or why, but I'm sure it was UK before). So I reset it to UK and restarted the laptop as applying this change didn't affect the Store.

Neither did the restart and I still have Greek menus in the Store.

I know this wasn't the case a few days ago as I had to reinstall all my apps after a refresh, and everything was in English then. There has always been a little Greek in the Store (app ratings were in Greek for example), but the menus and other instructions have always been in English.

Can anyone suggest how I can get things changed back to English?

I am writing a VB application that makes use of some embedded VBA. I have created a template MS Word 2000 document that contains a series of bookmarks. When the user clicks the print button, the text in the dialog text boxes are printed at the appropriate bookmarks. I have installed several other applications using the same snipet of code with no problems. However, today I am trying to get it to run on one guy's computer and the text shows up in the document using greek letters. When adding more text to the document it is also added in Greek. I have opened a new document on his machine and it shows text in english. I think there must be setting in Word that it set incorrectly, but I'm not ruling out a problem in my code.

Hi all,

I'm making a scientific poster presentation and am using Photoshop to make some of the fancy visuals for it.

I have some text in a bubble, but I'd like the text to include some of the Greek symbols you can get in MS Word or similar applications.

Copy - pasting the text across from Word into my Photoshop text layer doesn't work. The text comes across fine but I simply get spaces where all my theta, phi and whatnot were.

Does anyone know if it is possible to get these symbols to correctly display in Photoshop? I've Googled it and looked at the manual to no avail.

Apologies if this is the wrong forum - it looked the most likely one to me.

A:Using greek symbols in Photoshop image text - possible?

Oops - turned out the solution is simple. For anyone else who wants to know, there's a font called Symbol which, unsurprisingly, has lots of common Greek and Latin symbols.

Now I feel stupid.

In writing to French or Greek colleagues,
I need to use grave-acute accents and/or greek letters (\pi, \sigma, \tau,...)

I opened Character Map and dragged some of them into the mail text.
Unfortunately, when the mail is opened, the greek characters appear as

My comments:
1st) how to transmit the above characters ?
2nd) is it possible to use directly some combinations of Alt+XXX or AltGR+XXX or ....
without invoking Character Map for the French grave-acute accents ?

At present the only alternative I have, is to use Latex.

Packard Bell Imedia

A:Paths , Librabries ?

You need to remember that library's only point to the actual file somewhere on the network or on your own machine in the "user" files. If you need to delate something from the library you should delate the file from the actual source "my pictures" My documents" "my music".

But there is a way to make it work like you want.

Just go into Windows Media Player, choose the "organize" tab then "options" then choose the Library tab and set it to "delate files from the computer when delated from the Library. Although I believe that only works if you are delating files from Library of the machine that contains the source files.

That should allow for delating from the Library, but only from the machine that the files reside on, I don't believe it will work accross the network. It think it still works best if you delate from the file source instead of the Library.

Administrators and System should have Full Control and Read access, Power Users should have Read and Special, and Users should have Read access. Creator Owner should have Special. These should all be greyed out, meaning they are inherited.

A:How do you interpret paths like C:\DOCUME~1\...

This kind of path is contraction of the real folder or file names so that they are compatible with the old 8.3 DOS filename format. I don't know why it is necessary, but in (my) theory it works this way:
Long names are stripped of all spaces, even between words.
If the resulting string, without extension, is longer than 8 characters, the 6 leftmost characters are taken and an index appended, to distinguish between similar names.
So "ASDFGHJKLQWE" becomes "ASDFGH~1" while ASDFGHJKLRTZ" becomes "ASDFGH~2"

So the one you submitted translates to something like

C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\Temp
Where username is different for each user of the computer.

How would I set up Windows 8 so that I can edit the `path` environment variable in a fixed pitch font such as `Console` or `Lucida Console`? I don't want to change the font for other parts of Windows - only where paths are displayed. It seems I've been doing this in a terribly inappropriate font for many years and my tired eyes aren't great for semicolons.

I am using Oplisker program.

Oplisker (Open Source Play List Maker) |

How to create m3u file from mp3s in different folders on your computer ?

It seems to only create mp3 playlist only from mp3s in the same folder.

I was interested to create playlist from different folders with different paths
to save to one m3u file, not m3u file in each folder from the mp3s within that folder.

I know I can edit the file so it goes to different paths using notepad, but that would defeat the purpose of this program making it easier to save playlst from diferent mp3s in diffrent folders.

Hi guys.
I've just tried to use WinMX and found that it is showing the full paths as to where files are stored on the users' HDs.

Can I turn this off? It makes it really difficult to see the file you're looking for, with all this C:\My Documents\My Music\..... crap at the front.

A:[SOLVED] WinMX paths??

Go to the Search page. Then, look for a button that says:

Show Full Paths. Press that, and the paths should dissapear

My documents are located in D:\Dropbox\MyOwnDocuments

I no longer use Dropbox; so I would like to move them all to D:\MyOwnDocuments

Problem is that I have many portable programs there, and also program files and program data for programs running from my C drive. Not to mention various other shortcuts to documents or folders in D:\Dropbox\MyOwnDocuments

Is there a quick way to check which programs / shortcuts need to be changed? Or (better) is there a way to change these paths automatically?

Thanks for any input.

On my main PC i am running Windows 7 Homepremium 64bit. My Pc is connected via ethernet cable to BT Homehub3.

I have another PC running Windows XP SP3 connected via WiFi and a laptop also Wndows XP and connected vis WiFi.

I have a Kodak C110 AiO printer connected to the home pc via USB cable.

I have tried to set up printing on the other PC and laptop and the Printer is shown in the network map, but cannot and all my efforts have now disrupted the network; viz I cannot access shared files on the Network.

On the Home PC the network is called Network 2.

I want it to be the Homegroup or Work Group but cannot seem to make this happen.

Any suggestions please?

A:How do I reset my network paths

If I take it you want to print on the main PC from the other two ? I have a similar situation and set it up giving the main PC a fixed IP and then when adding the printer to the other two I used the local port method i.e \\fixed IP address\printer share name, having initially shared the main printer - you will need to install the printer driver on the remote systems. My main PC is ethernet and all the others are wireless.

Hope this is of help.

There are still doubts about what the possible and legal upgrade paths are for Windows 7.

Below I tried to compile some information in a way which I hope will be helpful.

Thanks to my friend Kari for his valuable contribution
Any other additions or comments are much welcome

1) Upgrade: to move from Windows XP or Windows Vista to Windows 7
2) Custom or Clean Install: wipes the previous installation and install Windows 7 anew. Does not preserve user files
3) In-Place Upgrade: upgrades from specific versions of Vista to specific versions of Windows 7, preserving user files and programs.
4) Upgrade version: Windows 7 license for those who own a valid license of XP or Vista
5) Full retail version: Windows 7 license to install on any PC, independent of previous installations or ownership. Can be reinstalled on other computers (when activated the previous installation is no longer valid)
6) Full OEM version :Windows 7 license to install on one PC, independent of previous installations. Can only be re-installed on same computer and hardware setup

Upgrade paths
The chart below shows in what situations one can perform an in-place upgrade (e.g. from Vista Business to Windows 7 Professional) without the need to migrate files or programs, and the situations when one needs to do a Custom (Clean) Install and replace the data in the target disc. This is the case for all Windows XP owners or Windows Vista Starter. In this case you will need to migrate your personal files ... Read more

Hello! I recently upgraded my computer with an SSD for boot and main programs and use my 1TB HDD for general programs and media storage. The thing is I want it to by default install to my D:\ drive.

Now the only solution I see is editing the registry ProgramFilesDir - Which has some serious flaws. It will attempt to launch every program off of the D:\ drive even when it is stored on C:\ and about 9 out of 10 times, it still default installs to C:\.

Does anyone have a fix for this?

Since a picture is worth 1000 words....

I can't figure out how to edit booloader paths.

I had the triple boot working- 7, vista, WUBI ubuntu. Then I installed Snow Leopard and tried to add it in via easyBCD.....and all hades broke loose.

Anybody know how to fix? And how to actually set OSX to boot from windows, since there's no drive letter?

A:Edit Bootloader Paths

Open an elevated command prompt in Windows 7

IMPORTANT: make a backup of your bcd file first. To do that, type:

bcdedit /export C:\SAVEDBCD

For Vista:

bcdedit /set {*insert here*} device partition=F:

* insert the Windows vista BCD ID, too small for me to read (take out the *'s)

ok, Vista should be working now, please test it to make sure

For Ubuntu: - optional; this will rename "nst Linux Loader" to "Wubi Ubuntu"

bcdedit /set {*insert here*} description "Wubi Ubuntu"

* insert the "nst Linux Loader" BCD ID, too small for me to read (take out the *'s)

It is getting late, so try those, which should get Vista back on its feet, also go to the elevated cmd and type "bcdedit" please post back the results right-click the cmd prompt and select "mark" then highlight every thing, then post the results. Please copy the results, so i will be able to copy and paste

Also, what is the "EFI snow leopard" partition for???

I can´t find a solution to this problem anywhere in the Net, so maybe you guys can help me. I just did a reinstall of windows 8.1 on my desktop using the option to keep all data AND program files. The process went on very well....BUT when I restarted some programs' exe files are not found by Windows when I try to open them (Ccleaner and Office 2010 are examples) Ccleaner I uninstalled and reinstalled but the message is the same " Windows cannot find [path], make sure you typed the name correctly and then try again...." Office 2010 I ran the repair option but the message came on again, so I reinstalled it and couldn´t open it because the message came on again. I think paths got messed up somehow because those files are certainly in my hard drive. Please can you help me out?

Firstly, context: My student edition of Autodesk Maya was not working (something about the license being invalid or 'not found', and so when I searched for the error message online, a solution was to go into Environments and Paths, and replace/edit or add one for C:/Autodesk. It didn't work, and I ended up just uninstalling and reinstalling the program manually for it to work.
However, apparently I screwed around really badly in there, because now important things won't open, such as my MalwareBytes program. When I try, a window will popup and say this:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
The system could not find the environment option that was entered."
So, naturally, I try to find/open the Environments and Paths thing again, right? Nope. I can't open that either:
"Windows cannot find '%windir%\system32\SystemPropertiesAdvanced.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again."
Even though I typed 'Environment' in my search bar to find it.
Then recently, Origin tried to install an update on my laptop, but it couldn't find the ProgramFiles, and so there was an error in installation. As a result of this, Chrome is not opening up immediately when I click it. It waits about five-six minutes after I've clicked it. I think it's what caused it, because it didn't do it before yesterday, when I tried to install the update.
So basically: how can I fix this despite knowing little to nothing about computers? How can I go into the Environments with... Read more

Having moved a bunch of shared printers from one server to another, I need to change the local printer paths on all workstations - is this something that can be done at a command line, and therefore scripted and placed into a batch file/login script?

I rather think it's going to have to be done with something like VBScript or WSH (about which I know nothing!) but if anyone has any ideas, I'd be pleased to hear them.

On my desktop-computer i have shared some folders with my home network. Then i changed their paths, as i reorganized myself. Now it seems, when I acces the network, those folders paths dont seem to be updated, as i cant access them.

I can now of course "unshare", rename and share them again, which makes them again accessible through the network, but the old "folder names" still remain. why is that, how can i correct it?

Same problem with some old "synched folders".

A:shared folder and changing their paths

Curious, where do the old 'folder names' remain? Just in the drop down menu under 'Map network drive ...'?

If so those paths are saved in your registry.
