Compaq Presario V2000 Start Up Problem

Q: Compaq Presario V2000 Start Up Problem

I have a Compaq Presario V2000 laptop, about 4 years old, and it fails to start up 100% of the time. Successful start ups happen now around 40% of the time. Typically it starts up with the Compaq logo at the beginning and either stops there or goes blank to the cursor at the top left corner. I've tried to open it on safe mode when it doesn't start up properly, but to no avail or I forcefully shut down the computer until it starts up. Is there a way to ensure that it does start up, because I have gone through dry spells for weeks before I have a successful start up?

Any help would be greatly appreciated! I'm not so savvy on the computer lingo so relatively simple explanations are greatly appreciated as well!

I just got a used Compaq Presario V2000 laptop. It was working fine but it was running slow and there were some other problems so I formatted the drive and installed windows xp. Now, all of the hardware is unrecognized. The speakers arent found, the video card isnt found, the monitor, wifi internet, etc. Everything either isnt found or its generic so under monitor it just says "Video Monitor". Can anyone help me with this? I got it used so I dont have a recovery disk or anything. Here are the specs:

1.7 or so Ghz Amd Sempron 3100+
around 896mb of ram
128mb ATI RADEON video card (forget which one)
Altec Lansing speakers

Thats all I know from the top of my head. It would be greatly appreciated if someone could help me.

I have a compaq v2000 wont power up.. I seen the other thread on this subject and check and removed the compasators to check them... Unit will not power up.. I follow the 18V supply off the MB power connector to a 8 pin chip right after PR63 labeled PQ24 .. If Check from Ground to one side of the chip it gets 18V from power. and other side is look like strait through like a power switch (FET)... I tried to find the data sheet and nothing availible. Also showing on the compasitors from the forum
Compaq Presario M2000 Won't Power up

I seem to show a .09 ohm on the positive side of the contact to the other on where one of the caps would sit...

also showing .09 ohms from ground to the positive side of the cap contact on the board with the cap removed.

.09 is close to a short of some sort correct?

Guys, I have looked all over the net trying to find a solution for this. Hope someone here can help.

My sister has a Compaq Presario that she bought new, with WinXPHome installed. It is completely fried...every keystroke takes at least several minutes to work. I defragged (didn't look bad....but took over an hour to complete) Nothing I did helped. She did not get any restore Discs, and there is no hidden partition on her HD. Windows restore only went back a couple of months...did not help.

I did notice even when new that it seemed sluggish. It is a Turion 64, about 1.6 gig, I think.

I did a Ghost (a several hour job!) of the HD (just in case), then formatted, after saving and downloading all drivers.
I have a Boxed XPHome full install CD, that my wife uses on her computer. I tried to use that disc, with my sister's number, which did not work.

I did put a full working XPPro on the Compaq, just to verify that it would work good. It does. Plenty fast, all the saved hardware drivers work. However, I can't leave it there, as she won't be able to activate it, besides which she likes XPHome.

Can anyone here tell me how to use my XPHome disc, and get it authenticated with her number?
Someone elsewhere said to use my disc, with my number to install, and then CALL Microsoft for an activation number, after telling them on the phone what I had to do. Do you agree with this?

Thanks for your help.

I loaded Win 7 on a compaq presario v2000, which originally had win xp on it. Anyways windows 7 loaded fine, the only thing is that when I look in device manager, there is one entry called mass storage controller that has a yellow exclamation mark on it. I have uninstalled it and did a 'scan for hardware changes', and initially the computer says 'installing driver' but ends up saying 'device driver not installed successfully'. Where can I find this driver? Its not listed on the hp site for my computer.

There are two changes I made, and Im wondering if that is why I dont have a driver for the mass storage controller. First, the system originally had windows xp on it, and second, the processor is a 64 bit AMD turion and the operating system I installed is 32 bit.

If those arent what would cause the issue then I dont know why Im facing the problem. Helppppppppppppp

I have windows 7 on compaq presario v2000 laptop. I want to use audacity to record some music from the internet, but when I click on it, it says 'No recording device found'. This is strange, cause I thought the sound card would be what audacity uses to record from, and I dont know what else a recording device would be. Besides on another laptop, a dell inspiron 2200 which has windows xp, everything works fine.

So why is not working on the compaq presrio v2000? I can listen to audio just fine, but I cannot record it.

Help!!!

A:compaq presario v2000 No recording device found

It's...not that simple.

What format is this music that you want to record...being streamed in? What website is the source?

I don't use Audacity, but I've played with it a couple of times...but I was never interested in recording, only the mixing/editing of music files I have on hand. Try reviewing the instructions for using it to record.

As for music via the Internet...I download .flv files from YouTube. Then I must either use a player for that format to enjoy the downloaded video...or I can convert the .flv file to a different format. I convert them to .mp3 files, I'm not interested in the visuals.

What I'm getting at...you cannot record music that you hear on your system...just because you can hear it when on the Internet.

As for recording from the soundcard...yes, that can happen. But only if you provide an input via either the microphone or the external input connection. For example...I can use one of CD players and connect to an amplifier...and pass that signal into my computer via the soundcard...and record the music from the CD.

If we can figure out what you are trying to do, you can probably get instructions on how to do it.

hey...im new here....i was wondering if anyone could help me...i have a Compaq presario V2000.....it has a celeron M 1.4ghz processor....i bought a 2ghz pentium IIII and tried booting with it in and it didnt boot...so im wondering if the motherboard supports it or not...or if u just fried the processor(which would suck)

A:pentium IIII 2ghz processor in a Compaq Presario V2000

Did you buy a Pentium 4, or a Pentium M? There is a difference, and I believe that only the Pentium M will work in that motherboard. Also, it has to be a Dothan or Sonoma core. If you're not sure which one you have, post the code on the CPU here, and we can figure it out from that. It should be printed on the metal part of the CPU.

Can you start the machine in Safe Mode?

This is accessed by tapping the F8 key during startup (you'll probably need to do this about once every two-to-three seconds from the time you turn the machine on - shouldn't take more than 20-30 seconds to reach the menu), and selecting Safe Mode from the menu that appears.

I tried to press the button in to turn it off but nothing happened and the light kept flashing. Eventually I turned the power off at the wall. When I turned it back on the same thing happened. However, when I tried after about an hour turned off at the wall the PC came on as normal. It has done this several times variously coming on and not. Hi i have a Compaq Presario V2000 series laptop and it has suddenly started shutting off when i stream online videos or open up a game like world of warcraft. i have been running windows 7 on it ever since beta came out and also have the full version. it never gave problems until a week ago. now all i can do i watch videos existing on my hard drive or browse internet without watching videos.

i have the speed fan program installed and highest temperature i saw was 52.. fan speed doesnt show.

but the fan keeps making loud noises in a pattern .. it stays quiet for a bit, then gets loud to remove heat then goes back to quiet. all of this takes place within 5 secs. and keeps repeating.

i have a partition on my HDD one has xp and other has windows 7. both have the same problems so i know its a hardware issue.

can any of you spot any obvious problem?

This laptop was not booting up for a while - and my housemate fixed the power cable himself and told me not to move it around much (pretty ugly fix), But the thing booted right up just fine!

I went to use it today, and when try to boot, I get the following message, which just blinks on for a few seconds and repeats indefinitely:

Intel UNDI, PXE-2.8 (build 082)

For Realtek RTL8139(X)/8130/810X PCI Fast Ethernet Controller v2.13 (020326)
PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
PXE-MOF: Exiting PXE ROM.
The computer is not hooked up to an ethernet cable.

2 questions:

1. Is there something I can do to get the machine to boot?

2. My reason for using it today was because I wanted to transfer all my files to an iomega eGo portable hard drive since I don't plan on using the Presario anymore, except as a back up (if it works). Is there a way I can do this just to retrieve the data somehow?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Hello, let me start by saying that I am only moderately technically savvy. I'm not afraid of technology, but my only experience is tinkering around with my own PC's over the years when issues have come up. I'm a big fan of trying to do things yourself before calling in the professionals. However because of this, I have been delegated to complete the task at hand. This is my nephew's computer that has been dropped off at my house to somehow get running again.

I have a Compaq Presario SR1950NX desktop running Windows XP Media Center Edition and I have had the computer for five years without any problems. Unfortunately, my desktop turned off without any warning.

I tried to turn the Compaq Presario desktop back on. When I turn it on, it will display the Compaq logo but it will not go any further than that (in other words, no Windows XP welcome screen, etc.) The hard drive light is on solid.

Could it be the power supply went out or is it something more serious? Any help would be greatly appreciated - thanks!

A:Compaq Presario SR1950NX will not start

Hi it could be many things - overheating - faulty Ram etc.

If you feel able to..
Turn the Pc off - leave the plug in to maintain the earth.
Touch the metal case to discharge and static.

Remove any dust - do not use a vacumm cleaner, too much static.
Check that all fans are free of dust and will rotate.

Remove Ram - Video cards etc and then Reseat in the slots.
If more than one Ram stick - use just one at a time, as a test.

Put the case back on the Pc - and see if it with boot.
Let us know the result.

Greetings

I've got a three-month-old V2000 notebook that has trouble booting up and shutting down properly. It has been used by a mobile college student and has been very well cared for. On the side is a built-in memory card reader that can read many different formats including SD, Sony MS etc.. The memory card slot is routinely used to download pictures from an SD card and may possibly have some internal wear.

Here's the Problem:
During a normal boot the computer freezes (but does NOT lock up) at the Windows XP splash screen. After some headbanging I found that by inserting an SD memory card into the slot at this moment the computer unfreezes and continues to boot. There is a second Compaq screen (see attachment) at which the computer freezes again. Only when I remove the SD card from the slot does the computer continue to boot; it finishes unhitched.

Similar freezes occur IN WINDOWS after booting when I insert the SD card to download pictures. I am able to browse and copy files from the SD card several seconds before it freezes. As in bootup, the computer does not lock-up, but hangs temporarily. When I remove the card the computer unfreezes.

The computer also freezes (just as before) at the user-greeting screen during shutdown!

Here's what I've tried:

Uninstalling and reinstalling the slot-reader through device manager
Modifying the BIOS boot order
Using a different memory card
Any suggestions would be golden.

Recently I slipped and fell while carrying my Compaq Presario v4000 laptop and since then my perfectly working laptop was not right anymore. My laptop started freezing and hanging constantly. while working on a file or playing music it would freeze and hang until i turned it to an angle of 45 degrees to the right then it would work right. Even when i turned it on it would freeze. So I opened the back it to see if everything was okay and nothing was loose inside the laptop. I noticed that the hard disk was not all the way in at the connector. it was loose and I could see the pins so I pushed it in to make a full contact connection.

Then I closed the back and turned the laptop on. The laptop would not turn on. I heard the whirring sound of the fan come on and the hard disk made a clicking sound both the whirring sound of the fan and the click of the hard disk would stop at the same time. It continued on and off and would not stop both the whirring of the fan and the click sound of the hard disk. The power led light and the hard disk light were both yellow or amber in color and would come on and off with the whirring of the fan and clicking of the hard disk. Please help. OS - Windows xp

First of all, every once in a while when we shut it down and try to turn it back on, the fan will turn on briefly the buttons will light up and then "crash!". after leaving it unplugged for hours it usually will start up normally.

The more annoying problem though is the crashing. When we try to download things or just randomly, we'll get the blue screen, immediate crash... and then on start up we get the following:
cpu=Intel(r) celeron(r) m cpu
512m System RAM Passed
1024k Cache SRAM Passed
System BIOS shadowed
Video BIOS shadowed
ATPI CD-ROM: TSSTcorpCDW/DVD TS-L462D
Fixed Disk0:WDC WD800BEUS-60LAT0
Mouse Initialized
ERROR
0200: failure fixed 0

We also get the message that says basically says Failure to disk 2 is imminent and the I should back up my data and replace the disk drive.
I just updated my drivers hoping it would help at least a teeny bit but, it seems to have made it a teeny bit worse. Do I need to update my BIOS? Should I be worried about having to actually spend money the piece of crap?Is my laptop telling me the truth? Any free or inexpensive solutions would make our life awesome! Thanks.

Hi and welcome - the above says it all.
The hard drive is about to fail - you will need to replace the hard drive.

A friends laptop suddenly started booting to a desktop with no icons, no start menu. I can Ctrl-Alt-Del to Task Mgr and see the disk from a command prompt and even start programs installed on the PC from there. I ran NAV which found nothing. Did a SFC, CHKDSK, repair install, all to no avail. HJT and startup logs attached.

Many thanks,

I bought it used and had for a year now. I had to buy a universal ac adapter from Kensington(70W) for it. After I started usuing it I started to notice that battery started to hold a charge for less amount of time and and eventually never even recognized battery, but when I went to control panel it never made any reference to the battery not being good or other. (sorry I am a newbie). But then about 3 months ago I was using laptop which i do have on a stand so as to allow not over heating and it just shut off. no lites ever have been seen since that day. I know the Kensington adapter uses No. 9 for my brand of laptop and I have read that the connection is not a good one with compaqs or HPs and I know parameters for what my laptop needs is only 65 watts in adapter. So heres my question.. how do I find out what is wrong without paying hundreds to someone just to have them tell me its the motherboard or something else that is going to require more cash than I can afford. If i find another battery that is charged and put it on mine and it turns on that would suggest I need a new connecter for ac plug to work correct?
thanks

Two weeks ago my 2 yr old Compaq V2000 wouldn't boot. I got the ntldr not found message. Looked like the hard disk was fried so I got a new disk.
Put in the new disk and used the Compaq All in One DVD to try and restore the system. The DVD booted, I picked the option to reinstall the whole operating system, it showed a progress bar creating restore partition and then gave the ntldr not found message.
I ran the hard disk self test through the BIOS and it checked out. The replacement disk is 160 Gb 5400rpm IDE (Hitachi). Getting desperate, I opened up the machine and took out the CMOS battery, left it out for 20 minutes and put everything back together again. Tried the restore process but still got the ntldr message.
Tried to install Mandriva Linux but the install hangs right at the start.
Getting more desperate, I got a Win 98 boot disk and put it in. Ran fdisk, created partitions and formatted. But I found that my 160 Gb disk was showing as 60 Gb in fdisk. Anyway, I was still able to access the hard disk using DOS. I even transferred system to the hard disk and was able to boot DOS through the hard disk. Apart from the Win 98 disk, nothing installs.
I am totally confused. I am assuming that since I can access the hard disk through DOS, there shouldn't be any problems with the hardware?
What did I miss?
Please help!

I am having a problem with starting up a compaq v2000 laptop, it beeps nonstop and sometimes goes to the XP screen but sometimes just sits there with a black screen and a blinking white line in the top lefthand corner. It runs good once if it gets to the desktop and such, it just seems to have problems booting. I had been told to count the beeps to see what the problem could be but I'm up to 20 something beeps now. Any suggestions on what might be wrong and how to fix it would be greatly appreciated, thanx .

Guys

I recently bought a Compaq V2030US notebook. I bought it off ebay. WHen i bought it it had an issue with system booting from LAN and was giving PXE E51 error which i fixed easily by disabl it in BIOS and also change the boot order. but the issue that i am having now is weird.

I am trying to install windows XP Professional service pack 2 on the hard drive. Now let me go back a little bit. I tested 2 hard drives (HDD 1 - Good, HDD 2 - Has a password block according to my DELL CPx). Now i tried to install XP on HDD 1 it starts of fine. Says Starting windows and then BAM!!! shuts down. same with HDD 2. starting windows from the disc and BAM!!! again...shuts down. I have a feelings that it could be the caddy connector. but i am not sure. again it could be a bad IDE borad|cable. Please advise guys. Before i start taking the system apart i want to know the easy ways. any help would be much appreciated. thanks

A:Compaq v2000 series shuts down during windows XP setup

May be a faulty HardDrive partition

Here is Delpart http://www.juliatexas.com/delpart/Delpart.exe
I've used it many times for stubborn partitions removal
Here's some info on it: http://mirror.href.com/thestarman/DELpart.htm

May be faulty Ram

Here is Memtest ISO, to create a bootable Memtest CD.
Run memtest at least 7 times for a thorough test.

May be CPU

A faulty internal processor, can cause this error.
As many users tend to overclock CPU's (and Ram) Your first choice would be to load Bios defaults (or Optimized Defaults) in CMOS. But a hardware fault on your CPU means it will need to be replaced (this can be a little hard to explain presently.

Can be devices attached to your computer

Mainly USB and modem devices can cause issues with installing Windows
Either unplug them (actually any not needed device) or disable them in CMOS

It's a bit grey at this point. Without more info on error messages or anything else
ie can be HardDrive or even the CD you're using !
Just try the above first

Hello-have prev worked with Compaq tech support 3 sessions but still have same problem with video. Until recently, I could watch MSNBC video OK. Have never been able to watch CNN video. No new software has been added to computer recently. Now, when I click to see video on MSNBC, it acts like it's going to open, then get x in corner and says done in taskbar. Then screen comes up telling me to install free software and a link to windows media player 10. I do this, it loads as it should, and I try to install as normal. At end of installation, it gives me error message from Windows Media Technologies. It says"this version of WMT is incompatible with this version of windows. For more info view the info at the Microsoft website". Have tried this several times. Have gone thru several scenarios with compaq and tried many different remedies. Have tried to uninstall all WMP entirely and reinstall. Many restarts. Disc popup blocker, antivirus, firwall, defrag, run programs that compaq had me try. Same prob now. Have the 8 system recovery disc's from compaq if all else fails but don't want to do that if it can be corrected any other way.

When starting this pc it will load the BIOS but is then unable to load the Win XP software. It gives a message stating that it is unable to find the system software telling me to initiate the repair process.

By pressing the 'r' key a restart of the pc is initiated causing the pc to reboot. Sometimes the boot process will find the systems software and other time I will need to press either the F1 key to go into the BIOS setup and the exit or press the F8 key to go into safe mode startup to cause the pc to find the system software and thus start up.

This pc has all of the latest updates from Microsoft loaded onto it. The XP version is 2002 and with service pack 2 installed.

I have run the PC-Doctor software installed on the pc which tells me that there are no problems with the hard disk. That being case, is the problem with the operating system? If so how might I obtain the repair disk the BIOS is asking for?

Any help would be appreciated!

Your pc should have came with a XP Installation Disk. All you do is insert the CD in the CD Tray and reboot. When it ask to press any button to boot from CD, press any button and the CD will start to load files. Once that is complete (usually 2-5 minutes) press ENTER the press R to repair Operating System

Hi:

Here's the problem:

Someone asked me to see if I could upgrade an early (old) Compaq Presario 5WV254 computer. The first thing I did was max out the RAM (768MB) using Crucial's 'certified' Compaq modules.

This dinosaur has a 40GB hard drive and an nVidia 8MB graphics card. I placed Windows XP Pro into the drive and proceeded to format the drive with NTFS. Everything went smoothly, and the machine rebooted after installing the drivers, etc.

Unfortunately, instead of continuing to proceed with the usual installation process, it starts the initial setup process over and over (I let this happen about 7 times) and will not complete the installation.

I've performed upgrades on lots of these older Compaq Presarios, but have never encountered this before.

Does anyone have any ideas as to how this issue can resolved?

Thanks in advance.

Griff

Hi,
My Compaq Presario 2100 boot up to this:
PreBoot Execution Evnironment
PXE_E61 Media Test Failure. Check cable.
Then tries to reboot again.

Then I use the QuickRecover CDs that comes with my laptop. I get this:
Exception 0E ErrorCode=0004
CauseWay Error 09 Unrecoverable exception.
The CD eject.

Then I try to boot from the MS OS CD.
I managed to get into the recover mode and get a c:\
I tried chkdsk, fdsk, but got invalid drive.

Looks like my harddrive is gone.
Questions:
I want to get a bigger drive 40GB from the same manufacturer(Toshiba), will it be compatible with the BIOS, etc?
I tried to manually pull out the harddrive from under the front of the keyboard. But I don;t want to break anything in so doing. Any ideas?

Any suggestions is much appreciated.

A:Compaq Presario Boot problem

As I ahve been working with computers my whole life you must be one person that might not know a lot. I am not calling you a liar or anything but I do not believe that your hard drive is under the keyboard as HP owns compaq and I ahve not seen an HP note book that has a Hard Drive under the Key Board. I believe your hard drive is under tha lab top or at the front. Mind it being you will have to take some screws out and go hunting.

On anoter note if your Hard Drive was fried yur lap top would not even reconize it. There for Ibeleieve it is a windows installaion problem I think yiou said you are using Win XP. If you are do a full format of your Note Book and try to reload the boot disks. If the boot disks dont work the just load windws as your boot disks might have a problem or are corrupted with scratches mis use etc.

Need any more help IM me.

I bumped my laptop this morning on the mouse pad (the thing you run your finger on to move the mouse curser) pretty hard and my laptop shutdown, as I went to power it back on it wouldn't turn on. I can click the power button all I like nothing will start up. I took off the caseing above the RAM and hard-drive and made sure they didn't shimmy loose, after I made sure neither was loose I put the covers back on and I'm still having the same problem.
I have been having hard-drive problems latley and have to replace the hard-drive but thats beside the point.(Laptop only works in safe mode with networking). I have someone who wants to buy it with the current hard-drive problem due to the great price I offered. But I am ensured that theire not going to buy it if the damn thing wont power on.
The power cord and battery work just fine. (Was working good last night) Could somthing be loose? I have read tons of articles on this matter and nothing I saw applies to me. Would this have somthing to do with the CPU and Motherboard parts getting loose enough so it cannot recive power? Or is this one of them problems when I have to either take the whole damn thing apart and sauder stuff or what? Any imput will be greatly apreciated.

A:HP Compaq Presario F700 problem

You need to disassemble the case to get to the MousePad unit... remove, adjust, and replace it, then remove or disable the current touchpad drivers, and reinstall them from a Presariou download...
It there is any permanent damage, you will see it, but usually it is an adjustment of components.

Hi All

I own a Compaq Presario F551AU laptop. It has been playing up so I used the HP system restore feature to restore it to factory settings. This meant that all data would be destroyed as the disk would be formatted as part of the process. Part of the process was to back up all other data which I did to a USB disk and it worked perfectly. The computer was then formatted and restored to factory and all works fine.

Now comes the problem.

When I use this to restore the back from the HP resotre utility is does not find the disk drive with the back up on it. Yet I can access the drive and find the back up files manually. Part of the back up file is an application which also sets the process as well. This also does not find the necessary files.HP say sorry no idea and of course windows back up does not recognise it.

Lots of important data on this. If anyone can help I would appreciate it very much.

Thanks

Hello all...
I recently wanted to install a program which told me i halfway through the installer that i had to have SP3 to run it.
So i googled sp3, went to the microsoft website and downloaded it.
My pc started to do the loop reboot thing thats assicoiated with amd processors..of course i didnt read up on this before i installed it.
So i researched how to fix this problem and came up with alot of different solutions.
I went to go get the xp disk. Inserted it in the drive and pressed F10 upon startup which launched the system recovery thing for compaq. I clicked recover or whatever and it started to do its thing, next thing i know its reinstalled xp...
So im thinking its wiped everything and installed a fresh version of XP which is not the case.
It still shows the programs in the program list but i cant use them and when i look at the C: drive capacity, there is still the same amount taken up and a little bit more, as i had previously before the crash.
Ive kinda worked out that its installed itself over the top of my older xp? but i dont know how to get this back
Please help!

A:Compaq Presario X1000 problem.

It sounds like you have a hardware problem. Maybe a power short. Maybe a bad power cable or connector. Maybe a bad motherboard. The possiblities are nearly endless.

If you feel that you are not skilled enough with notebook hardware, consider taking it to professional. Often they will diagnose for free or little money.

Hi,

I would suggest you to run Windows Audio Playback Diagnose and Repair from the below MS FIX-IT: http://support.microsoft.com/mats/AudioPlayback/

If the issue still persists, then go to control panel/sound/speakers/properties/advanced/restore defaults.

If nothing works, I suggest that you uninstall and reinstall the drivers for your Audio device. This will reset all Audio Components.

Kindly revert and let us know if that fixes your issue.

I have a Compaq Presario V5000 that won't power up. The fan powers up for just a half second and then shuts down again, but the power light stays on. There is NO post or boot. No screen. It did this intermittently at first but is now permanent. I've done all the power options - no battery, etc. This seems to be a common problem with HP/Compaq laptops. Is it worth replacing the motherboard or should I just scrap it?

I have the following problem with my XP Home SP2 Compaq F762AU laptop.

Sometimes after shutting down the laptop refuses to turn on when I hit the power key. Dead. It's only when I hit the power key together with the Fn key it would power up. This is a combo I accidentally found while grappling to turn it on yesterday, and it happened again just minutes ago. Sure enough hitting the Fn and power keys together at the same time turns it on. Like I said this doesn't happen all the time when I shut down and turn it back on, only sometimes, but it's bugging me.

I realise it may not be too big an issue but it bothers me nonetheless - who knows it could get worse (say, refusing to turn on at all).

Anybody ever experienced this?

Thanks!

A:Power Problem with Compaq Presario 2200

Did you try removing the battery, yet keeping the adapter plugged in and booting? There is no internal battery - but if the laptop won't start with just the cord, then typically it's a larger hardware issue (motherboard, bad component, etc.)

Hiya

The screen on my Compaq Presario C700 has gone green and fractally. It looks a bit like its eaten someones' acid. Not ideal, and is a bit migraine inducing...

It comes back to life if I tilt the screen right back, which says to me its a loose connection somewhere. Its not the motherboard, as I have checked it on an external monitor and is fine...

BUT

I have disassembled and re-assembled and its still the same, and now have a query...

Behind the screen, along with the ZIF connector that connects at the top , there is a tiny white plug on a silver cable that isnt connected to anything, and I cannot see anywhere it should live. Is this for a camera maybe, or is this maybe my problem?

Please, any advise would be massively appreciated. The disassembly manual on HPs website was completely useless, it appears to be for a different model than the one I asked for...

I look forward to your reply

After purchasing (1) 128 MB SDRAM, PC133 RAM stick for my old Compaq Presario, Model 5822, with a Pentium II processor, 550 MHZ, I realized that the "Computer Wiz" sales kid at the Best Buy didn't know what the heck he was talking about.

After a search here, (what I should have done before buying) I checked the following sites that were recomended by the TG members:

http://www.4allmemory.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=search.memorySearch&manufacturer_id=25&model_id=12636

http://www.crucial.com./store/listp...Compaq&cat=RAM&model=Presario+5822.&submit=Go

http://www.ec.kingston.com/ecom/con...asp?SysID=+8681+&distributor=0&submit1=Search

Apparently, I should have bought 1(or 2) PC100, SDRAM RAM stick(s). However, I still have a few questions that I hope someone will answer:

1) Memory.com & Crucial.com say that the maximum memory for this computer is 256 MB, while Kingston.com says that the maximum possible is 512 MB. The computer has two RAM Slots (64 MB & a 32 MB). Who is right?

2) On the package of the new, ill purchased, 128 MB PC 133, it shows also 16x64. What does this mean? Should I watch out for these numbers during my next trip to BEST BUY?

3) Whats the deal with DDRAM, SDRAM, RAM, .....Which one is right for my computer?

Thanks....

PS. In case anybody is wondering, I put in the 128 MB RAM along with the existing 64 MB RAM. The Computer displayed (counted) the RAM up in the top corner (white characters on a black sc... Read more

Hello,
I purchased a Compaq presario V3617LA laptop a couple of months ago which is running Windows Vista. Here is the problem I have been having:

It frequently freezes for several seconds and then shuts off. This seems to happen when it is attempting to load a web site with many images, though it often happens when only one or two applications are open as well. It is as if only a few MB of the 1024 MB are functioning.

I have run the hard drive diagnostic test, memory test, and did a system reinstallation as well with no success.

That is my main problem. Another minor question... how does one disable the function where touching the touch pad is equivalent to a left mouse click?

Thanks so much for any assistance.

I have a Compaq Presario that lacks a Ethernet cable link. It only has phone line links, but no Ethernet cable link. The network connection I use requires my Adapter to be able to connect with an Ethernet cable, but my desktop for the Presario doesn't have one.

Question: Is there any kind of cable that has the Ethernet on one side, and a Phone Line cable at the other side that I am able to purchase? Or is there any kind of link cable of some sort that could help my ethernet cable connect to this computer that does not have an Ethernet cable link? Thank you if helped.>.<

If you have a USB port, you can buy a USB to ethernet adapter for about 10 dollars.

I got a Compaq Presario 1800 as a hand-me-down from my friend. It has a sound problem: no sound from the laptop speakers can be heard. The headphone jack is messed up, and the O shaped plate that goes on the plug is missing. But, if I plug in headphones and point the headphone plug up, sound can be heard from the headphones. Is there any way to fix the laptop speakers?

Thanks!

Hi guys, I have a unique problem. After my laptop HP Compaq CQ50 comes out of hibernation or standby the sound no longer functions properly. I get no sound at all. A quick reboot fixes the problem but it would be nice if I could get it to work after coming out of hibernation. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Hi M51.If you're using Vista it's a known issue and there is an update (937077) that addresses that here.If it doesn't work, or you already have it, or you do not have Vista, let us know.Well actually, let us know anyway.

Hi,

I recently turned on my laptop and the screen was black. After a while when it booted up, the screen came on as normal and then flashed out about 10 seconds later. I can shine a torch on to the screen when it boots up and see windows and everything but it's obviously too dark to use. I replaced inverter and lcd panel but the problem remains...

How should I go about fixing this?

The symptoms of this problem are so specific. I hope someone recognizes them.

My computer will not finish booting normally. The screen will either remain totally blank or else it will begin booting only to go blank or sometimes some small section of the screen will be repeated all over it. The boot up process always fails in one of four places:
1) The screen will remain totally blank on power up.
2) The COMPAQ logo will appear for 2 or so seconds then it will fail.
3) The COMPAQ logo will come and go, then the cursor blinks in the upper-left corner for a few seconds, and then it will fail.
4) Windows will start loading and "Microsoft Corporation" will appear on the screen for about 1/2 seconds, then it fails.

On all occasions, the fans and LEDs will turn on, and the HD and DVD make noises.

This is the part I hope will be a huge clue to some of you out there. If anything appears on the screen during two consecutive attempts to turn the computer on, then it will always successfully finish booting on the latter attempt. It will never finish booting unless this happens.

What is strange is that it seems to know whether something appeared on the screen during the previous attempt, because during the one immediately after that, the screen almost always remains totally blank. So at most something will show on the screen only every other time I turn the computer on.

It usually takes a large number of tries before something will appear on the screen during two consecutiv... Read more

Customer's Presario was attempting to load into XP home and stopped at screen with mouse pointer that didn't move when mouse was moved. Booted into safe mode. Same thing. Booted to recovery partition. More or less same thing. Finally convinced Compaq tech support to send the recovery cds. It recreated the restore partition and then, IIRC, stalled at the same place when it tried to restore the Windows partition. Finally, I tried to install windows 98, and it stalled out during registry creation.

Somewhere along the line, I started to suspect a hardware issue. :-/

I've checked both the RAM and hard drive and they're clean. A friend has suggested that it might be the mouse's PS2 port and to try turning it off in BIOS and use an USB mouse. I haven't tried that yet - I'm working on another computer.

Does anybody have any other suggestions, or should I start shopping around for a new mobo if that doesn't work?

Hopefully I posted in the right section. But anyways I will be as detailed as possible. Currently I have a Compaq Presario CQ56 115dx running Wins7 out of factory. One day I was using my computer perfectly fine, everything normal and running great. I decide to close the lid to put it to sleep.

I come back later to find that it didn't actually sleep and was just stuck there. This has happened before and I would just turn off the computer and it would be fine. But recently I did and it is now stuck at bootup. The caps locks blinks 1 time, which corresponds to CPU not functioning I believe. I reseated harddrive and ram, didn't do much.

Then randomly as I am trying to get it to boot by turning it on and off, waited a few and it booted up normally. Perfect. Then I decided to shut it down instead of putting it to sleep just to find later when trying to get on, its back to the problem.

Any help would be appreciated on how to prevent this without any major repair work.

1st thing I would try is to re-seat the RAM, pull it out blow it off and put it back in...(make sure there all the way in)
if you get in windows, go to C:/windows/minidumps, copy them here, maybe someone with more experience can look at them for you...

good luck!

Good evening,

I have a Presario 1500 notebook for more than ten years now but after my last format it is impossible to watch smooth streaming video (YouTube for example).

I did what I do every time, I used the original system recovery cd's, the original Windows XP OS cd and of course I downloaded the usual drivers (chipset, sound, video-graphics) but the problem persists. Furthermore, after a while the computer crashes in an ATIfailure kind of type.

I tried various sites with drivers but nothings seems to work.

PLEASE HELP!

A:Compaq Presario 1500US video problem

The exact error would be helpful. However, if your description is semi accurate, it sounds like the laptop has an ATI video chipset and the error would indicate an ATI video driver crash.

It's generally recommended to only use the drivers supplied by the laptop manufacturer. So try updating/reinstalling the video drivers and use the drivers from Compaq (even though they are likely old).

Having said that, you can try getting drivers directly from the video chipset manufacturer. But drivers directly from the chipset manufacturer don't always work.

I have winME installed on Compaq Presario 5000 with 700mhz celeron 64mb ram 15 gig drive with a DVD and CDRW.

The computer recognizes the DVD which works great but the CDRW is not recognized at all in control panel. The light on the CDRW blinks once on boot up. I took cover off and reseated all connections which are tight.

If I run compaq diagnostics, the computer locks up. If I add new hardware it never finds the CDRW drive.

I went to compaq help site online and ran a diagnostic there which worked without locking up. However the CDRW is not found on list of hardware.

I cannot figure out how to check bios to see if it is configured wrong.. BTW, I have an extra Creative Blaster CDRW(new) that could be installed, but since this compaq is new I hate to replace something in it without making sure it is broken. Also, I dont want to send my new computer off to a service center if I can fix it.

Any ideas on what I can do?

I have a Compaq Presario V5000 that won't power up. The fan powers up for just a half second and then shuts down again, but the power light stays on. There is NO post or boot. No screen. It did this intermittently at first but is now permanent. I've done all the power options - no battery, etc. This seems to be a common problem with HP/Compaq laptops. I replaced the CPU to no effect. Is it worth replacing the motherboard or should I just scrap it?

Greetings

I have a Compaq Presario 1685 notebook, and its TFT display has clouded up on me till its all white and nothing is visible on the desktop.

An external monitor works fine on the system (which kinda eliminates the video card) but I beleive something might be up with the screen itself.

The problem occurred previously, and I solved it when I noticed that applying delicate pressur to certain spots behind the screen, cause the display to return as normal..

This doesn't work anymore though.

Another thing is.. when the computer is off for a long time (about a day) it takes longer for the screen to get cloudy white. For example.. the system would boot normally, the red COMPAQ logo would appear, followed by the initialization screens, and the Windows 98 startup screen.. then the desktop would appear.. and a couple minutes after, it would turn white.. boom..

If anyone has any ideas on this.. I"d love to hear 'em... THANX!

Hello,

The sound on my 3-month old Compaq Presario SR5510F is not functioning at all. I cannot hear the sound on webcasts. There is no sound on clips on the internet, including videos. I cannot hear any music playback ;and now, I cannot hear persons that I chat with on the Skype, though they hear me when I speak.

I took the computer to the Geek Squad today at BEST BUY. They tested it with their accessories and told me all was fine. I bought a new headset and external speakers. When I returned home and connected these, together with my DELL monitor, to the computer, there again was no sound.

It is very frustrating not having the sound as I do conferencing on Skype and Go To Meeting quite frequently. I have one on Monday morning. I need and will appreciate your help for solution.

Thanks.

A:Sound problem with Compaq Presario SR5510F

Hi there

Have you tried reinstalling the drivers for your soundcard?

To do so you must first uninstall the current drivers by starting a run dialog (Either Start > Run or by holding down the windows key and pressing "R") and typing in:

devmgmt.msc

You find your sound card/audio device, right click, go to properties, and under the driver tab select "uninstall."

Then download and install the correct driver:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&os=2093&product=3740354

if that doesn't work, try this one:

ftp://152.104.238.19/pc/audio/WDM_R198.exe
To find other drivers for your system and more support go to:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/product?product=3740354&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&lang=en&cc=us

Hi,

Recently my Presario 2100 keyboard gives me a problem: the G key won't work anymore, but pressing H or ' or the up arrow will also trigger the G key, it can only be stopped by pressing another key:

hgggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggw
'ggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggf

I did take out the keyboard and spray it with compressed air (in a bike workshop), and it is still the same.

It there any way to solve this problem, without having to pay for a new one?

Thanks for any advice.

Hello everyone!

I have been having this issue recently that I need help with. I am fairly clued up when it comes to computers, but this one has me stumped.

I have a COMPAQ Presario F500AU
1.8GHz AMD Turion x64 X2 Duel Core processor
Nvidia GeForce 6100
Broadcom Wireless
15.4" WXGA Widescreen LCD display
Windows 7 Ultimate beta Ver. 1000 (Windows Vista Home Basic was standard with it)

I recently had to take my DVD drive out and re-insert it due to dusty contacts. I put my laptop back together and inserted the DVD drive back in.

Please note, when I did all this, I was wearing a static strap connected to the computer while working on it on an anti-static mat with the mains and battery disconnected from it.

When I insert my DVD drive into the laptop, my laptop lights up, but I get no video signal. After about 30 seconds my computer turns off and on again. If I take my DVD drive out of my laptop, it boots as per normal.

Has anyone got any ideas as to how I could solve this issue?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Cheers,
David
