Slow Computer/Dell

Q: Slow Computer/Dell

Machine is slow -- I can hear the HD running continuously during normal computer use. This is an older machine -- 2005; wondering if install/uninstall of programs has slowed down machine. Added additional RAM last year -- 1Gb. Perhaps too much is running at once? help is appreciated.

When computer is left on too long, computer freezes. Currently the "install/uninstall shield" remains in my system tray without installing anything. thanks!

A: Slow Computer/Dell

It seems that your virtual memory is quite low, Go to your uninstall and try uninstalling programs and such that you rarly or never use. Low space on your hard disk usally is the cause of a slow computer. Also, try and remove some unimportant things (i.e old document, Power Points, things of that sort) to an alternate hard drive or USB Storage Devise...that should help

A:old dell computer running Windows XP some what slow

Typically slowness can be down to accumulated "junk" files, temp files, seriously fragmented drive...; cookies, an extensive history...Have you run the windows disk cleanup utility?Try that for a start. Then perhaps run a couple of cleaner utils...Suggest run in this order:Adwcleaner - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/dow...malwarebyter - https://www.malwarebytes.org/free/ccleaner - http://www.filehippo.com/download_c...Be aware of course that a Celeron is a nobbled processor. The full blown chip has (as I understand it) a maths co- processor, whereas the Celeron doesn't. In effect it's been nobbled... So it will never really spin along a rate of knots compared to the full blown cpu; and thus will be a little tardy, slow, sluggish with most current games? The graphics card too will effect how it performs with games...Incidentally, what model Dell do you have?message edited by trvlr

A:Slow and freezing computer on 7 year old dell

Hello and welcome Kevin. We probably have malware so we'll do that first. What is your Antivirus and Operating system? Please download the TDSS Rootkit Removing Tool (TDSSKiller.exe) and save it to your Desktop. <-Important!!!Be sure to download TDSSKiller.exe (v2.5.0.0) from Kaspersky's website and not TDSSKiller.zip which appears to be an older version 2.3.2.2 of the tool.Double-click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the tool for known TDSS variants.
Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator. If TDSSKiller does not run, try renaming it. To do this, right-click on TDSSKiller.exe, select Rename and give it a random name with the .com file extension (i.e. 123abc.com). If you do not see the file extension, please refer to How to change the file extension.Click the Start Scan button.Do not use the computer during the scanIf the scan completes with nothing found, click Close to exit.If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results - Select action for found objects and offer three options.Ensure Cure (default) is selected, then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.A log file named TDSSKiller_version_date_time_log.txt (i.e. TDSSKiller.2.4.0.0_27.07.2010_09.o7.26_log.txt) will be created and saved to the root directory (usually Local Disk C:).Copy and paste the contents of that file in your next reply. If TDSSKiller does not run, try renaming it. To do this, right-click on TDSSKiller.exe, select Ren... Read more

My dell computer suddenly started slowing down. The hard drive is pretty new, so that can not be the problem (this time I got lucky) I also checked the hard drives free space, and its fine. Defragmented the hard drive, no difference. Malwarebytes found nothing. Help?

This is not related to my last posting, it is another computer.

My laptop is having a problem with very slow operation. I have stripped it of unnecessary programs and have not found any viruses. I also did a hard disk refrag. Web browsing is almost impossible, sometimes taking minutes for a new page to appear. I actually do very little browsing with this system.

The computer was working fine a long time ago and got progressively worse. I can not restore to a better restore point at this time. It is possible that some of the problem is due to the wireless network connection which was difficult to get running but seems ok now.

I use BitDefender but all my attempts to update it are failing now.

I have a new Dell XPS8700 (i7 CPU, 16 GB RAM, Windows 8.1) and everything was fine until the Dell Backup and Recovery software appeared a couple of days ago, i.e. a Window appeared and prompted me to initiate / install the software (can't actually remember exactly what the message was...). Anyways, it seemed to load up ok (albeit very slowly), but ever since then the computer is running at snail's pace, i.e. videos play jerkily and it has to stop and think before opening some files. Very annoying.
I can't be 100% that it is the Backup and Recovery Software that has caused this, but the slow down exactly coincided with it, and I haven't done much else to the computer. The only things I've done are to get rid of McAfee now the free trial has run out and download Avira anti-virus software, and install Adobe Lightroom (and download a load of photos). These changes didn't cause any problems.
I'd be very grateful for any help. If it is this software, can I just uninstall it? Do other people get this problem?

I just spent an hour on the phone with Dell and he's telling me I need to do a clean install of my original operating system in order to get my system back up to speed. No way I'm doing that, and I know you guys can help get things back to normal. So it is a windows problem that is making system run very, excrutiatingly slow - I mean frustratingly slow.

What should I do first? Would a hi-jack log be helpful? I am running one now to paste onto this email.

Hello, I have a Dell 5558 Inspiron.  the internet is very slow to load.  My wife has a macbook pro that runs circles around my PC for web browsing.  I have tried various tricks to minimize startup functions and background apps.  is this a hardware issue that can be upgraded?  would upgrading the GPU, upgrading to SSD, or adding more RAM help?

A:slow internet loading, slow youtube response: Dell 5558

also, this unit has an intel AC-3160 wifi card.  can this be upgraded or adjusted to work better?

A little while ago I put a new 1TB hard drive in my Dell Inspiron N5050 to replace the old 500GB one. I used the Windows backup program on the computer and the information on the Windows website. I transferred the system image to a backup hard drive, then installed it onto the new hard drive. I've tried a disc cleanup, defragmenting the hard drive, and I've run all the diagnostics that Windows has and still this thing is SLOW!
I'm running Windows 7 64 bit, my computer has an Intel Core I3 processor. I still have the old hard drive with everything still on it and I still have the system image on the backup hard drive. Please if anyone can help, I would GREATLY appreciate it, this thing is driving me nuts (My OLD Inspiron 1420 with a Core2 Duo processor runs circles around my N5050!)

The short version of my question is exactly what the topic says-- Can I install a Dell-provided OEM version of Vista on a non-Dell computer?

But, here's the wordier version giving context, if anyone's interested.

About 10 months ago, I guess, I got a Dell Vostro that came with Windows Vista Home Basic. However, I had no interest in Vista (because I already had a Windows machine) and the very first thing I did was install Ubuntu on it. I still have the Vista reinstall disk, though, which, to my memory, hasn't been used.

Now I'm planning on getting a barebones system and upgrading what I see fit. For the time being, I'm going to use the Windows 7 RC, but I'd like to get the uber-great upgrade deal that they're having to pre-order either the Business or Home Premium version upgrade. So, to do that, I'd need an XP installation or a Vista installation. Is there any reason, legal or software-related, that I wouldn't be able to install Vista using that disk that came with the Vostro?

I heard somewhere that sometimes if you try, it'll say something like "This is not a Dell computer, you evil, evil person" and refuse to install, so I wanted to make sure before I pre-ordered the upgrade. I don't want to get the upgrade and have nothing to upgrade, of course.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1520 laptop with Windows Vista OS. I have a Dell 926 printer interfaced to it via USB. Printer driver is installed and the printer does communicate at times with the computer and does a good job printing. However, intermittently when trying to print a document I'll get a message on the computer that says that communication has been lost and print job failed.

I've checked all connections to make sure they are solid and no debris that might cause this.
That has not corrected the problem.
The other thing that happens is that the document I want to print will stay in the print queue/spooler and if I shut the computer and printer down and restart both it will print the job. And it may continue to print jobs but it's just a matter of time.

Needless to say this is frustrating. I can print several jobs in a row with no problem and then I'll get this "communication has been lost between printer and computer". And I have to go thru the procedure above to get the last job printed.

My wife doesn't understand how this works and will try to print the same job several times with the commo problem and then complains when it won't print.....and then they all print when the above procedure is followed.

Any ideas what is going on??? Any fixes??

So over the past 2-3 weeks I kept noticing that my battery kept dying even though I would shut it down (yes window > shutdown) the computer with a full battery. The next evening I would power up and see that the battery was at 20% from full charge. This is a BRAND NEW as in <2 months XPS 9550. I checked my event log and WHAT THE [email protected]#$??? It is absolutely filled with Dell Foundation Service and Dell Product Registration events all saying  " Power event Handled Successfully by the service." Clearly it is not.. The stupid things run every 10 seconds. So when I think I am powering down my computer, it is being blocked by these services and actually just going to sleep... but it actually isn't sleeping. Its waking up every 10 seconds. Can anyone PLEASE help me determine the issue. Apparently according to update service everything is up to date.

The Alienware Aurora worked beautifully for 3 days and then would not start. In the 8900's,,, got the blinking amber lights on the start button. Tech is coming to replace motherboard. What the heck is happening? Could it be the monitor... or the external hard drive or what? Come on Dell,,, what's up? I have a Dell XP Laptop as a back up using the same external hard ddrive.

I have a Dell Inspiron 530, XP PRO, SP3, about a year and a half old. Almost since I first got it, every few months or so, when I boot up it hangs on the Dell screen. When I turn it off and reboot, it is fine. I use Rebit to back up everything on an ongoing basis and have an extended warranty from Dell. Is there anything I can do about this, or should do? Thanks for your help.

A:Dell computer occasionally stuck on Dell screen

I would run a memory tester
http://www.memtest.org/

Download the prebuilt ISO, burn it to CD as an Image, boot from that CD and run the memory test for a couple of hours or overnight to stress test the memory.

Was given a Dell Optiplex 360 that I found out after getting a nasty virus had a bootleg XP OS
I also did not have any disks with it. I had older disks for a Dell 4600 that I used to wipeout the hard drive and install the new OS. Everything works fine except that I can not load any of the drivers from the second disk, (it was a 3 disk series)
thus at least at this point not able to connect with my cable internet. Cable people told me I needed the drivers.Any suggestions or can it just not be done.
Thanks, Al

A:Loading Older Dell OS To Newer Dell Computer

You will have to go to the dell website look under support and then drivers and downloads for your model of computer. If you use the service tag number on the computer it will make sure you get the correct ones you need. For future reference so you wont have this hassle again burn all of the drivers to a cd so you will be all set the next time.

After having been in touch with Dell support for nearly three months, I decided to recount my experiences here, mainly to provide insights for future Dell customers as to what their rights are, and to provide tips on how to effectively contact tech support.
I hope this guide can be of use for people struggling with their purchase as much as I did (and in fact, continue to).
Anyone having further insight to improve this article is welcome to leave notes here, and I will try to incorporate them in an update if deemed relevant.

Running older PC Clone 2.0 Ghz Dual CPU Pentium, 1GB Ram Win XP Home Edition system.

While navigation on Internet Explorer or Google Chrome, system runs extrememly slow and/or crashes. When using applications such as Itunes, Email, or simply opening up Word and other applications, it runs very slow and almost seems to stop. The IE7 that was on the computer had changed to an operate with add-ons off as a result of the infection. I downloaded and reinstalled IE7 and this seems to have fixed that problem for the time being. MalwareBytes and SuperAntiSpy icons dissappeared from my desktop. When trying to use them from the Start / Menu options the programs no longer worked. I reinstalled them and they appear to work fine now. However, the system still seems to run very slow over all and its performance is greatly hindered.

Next, I ran free version of SuperAntiSpyware and all it detected was a couple Adware cookies. Secondly, I ran free version of Malware Bytes Anti-Malware and it detected PUP.GamePlayLab infections located in the Registry Key: HKLM\SOFTGWARE\Microsoft\Windows.... These files were removed and quarantined by MWB. Thirdly, I ran Old Timer's TFC and then rebooted the computer and it appeared to run a little faster, but still sluggish while using IE7. So, finally, I ran ESET Free Online Scanner, and it detected "Win32/Toolbar.Babylon and Win32/TopMedia.a" virus infections. Scan took about 2 1/2 hours. I set it to search the drives/ar... Read more

Can anyone suggest a way to get a dell 770 printer to work on a non dell win98 system?

My friend was given the printer from his friends, but it's a dell and it's pretty muh brand new so he doesn't want to throw it away. It's also better than his current printer

Anyway, he uses the dell install disk but once it begins and runs the setup app it gives a message akin to pirating. Saying something like -this computer does not support dell , or something like - this computer is not a dell.

Can anyone offer advice. I did a search on google and dells' site and here.
I couldn't quite find anything that might lead me to an answer..?

Thanks

sorry, if this not the right place please move. I did many google searches cant seem to find the issue Im having, or maybe lack of the right key searches. You guys are my last hope.
I will try to explain my problem as clearly as I can. And so sorry about my bad grammar and spelling, trying to post this asap.

first off give small history of my PC. I bought my PC new Sept 2001. A HP Pavilion with 1.3 ghz, 256ram, and a 55gig hard-drive originally came with WinMe, since then I upgraded to XP. I kept my PC case clean, didn't try to install programs my PC couldn't handle, didn't go to any sites that knew were bad with viruses and such also had Malwareytes/spybot/avast/hijackthis to use, didnt install any toolbars, and tried not to have many programs open at the same time. I basically kept my PC simple with use.

Anyways around June I noticed some odd slowdowns
While playing Winamp and running a torrent with speeds of more than 400+ the audio would become choppy. This also happen when I would open FF, IE or any program while running Winamp, the audio would be choppy.

Extracting 700mb files from Winrar would take around 8mins

Playing Youtube, WMP, of VLC videos would be slow and choppy.

Transferring files from one PC to another over a crossover cable would take much longer. 4gigs of files would take about 20mins or so.

Virus scanners, Avast, Malwarebytes, and Spybot would also take much longer than usual.

So, about 2 weeks ago while my brother was on Youtube my... Read more

A:Help! Slow Computer, Slow Internet. Slow, Slow, Slow!

Hi MaryJane,Sorry for the delay, this forum is really swamped right now. I don't see any positive signs of malware in your log, although there is one thing that I am unsure about. I'll get to that in a minute. Before we do rootkit scans and use some other tools to confirm that malware is not the problem, let's do a quick check of resources.Press <Ctrl>-<Alt>-<Del> to open Task Manager, then click on the Processes tab. Place a check next to Show processes from all users. Note the numbers at the bottom, CPU usage should be running at 0 to no more than five percent if your system is idle (no background tasks running). If that is not the case, scroll down and see if any of the processes is running at a high percentage of CPU usage. On a normal system at idle the System Idle Process should show about 98 percent, meaning nothing else is using the CPU. The next columns to the right, memory usage and peak memory usage, may also show something out of line if one process is using a large amount of memory. If you see anything showing high CPU usage or high Memory usage, make a note of it.Now, click the Performance tab. The key numbers here are in the Commit Charge box -- The Total and Peak figures; and in the Physical Memory box, the Total figure. Make a note of these three numbers. I would like to see them, but I can tell you what I'm looking for: basically, any time the Commit Charge exceeds the total physical memory, Windows will have to constantly swap d... Read more

I have an old Dell Inspiron B130 that is running Windows XP very, very slowly. I have tried everything I know how to do - Removing non-essential programs, defragging, editing the Startups, scanning for spyware & viruses, used AVG PC Tune-Up, etc. It's still running really slowly.

Also my sound is very sketchy, in-and-out, no matter what volume level. I have SigmaTel Audio.

Thanks!

A friend of mine has a Dell (Shes not willing to get the service tag right now but I'll get it within 24 hours of my first post) I've tryed pretty much about everything with computer to get it to work properly, but the only thing that seems to want to work is a reformat. After booting it up the second time after reformatting, however, the system was back to its really slow self, windows would freeze (Not refresh on the screen, not lock up) Browsing the internet is horribly slow (I'll leave that for another thread if needed, its wireless internet, which I hate to deal with) The mouse freezes up when instant messages come through, when you browse through the hard drive contents, and pretty much anything involving moving or changing something that takes up more than .01% of the screen.

I got her to run a Hijack This! log and see if it came up with anything but nothing looks suspicious at all, perhaps you guys can see something in it.

Note: I've updated and reinstalled the drivers countless times, making sure to wipe them before I reinstall them. If this thread is on the wrong board please move it, I didn't know where else to post it.

I have a Dell Inspiron Laptop that belonged to one of my nephews. He obviously was not security minded. The computer is extremely slow and every program that I open will default into "Not Responding" in short time. I cannot access the internet except in safe mode, which I in now. I would like to provide more details about the system but Belarc Advisor will not run in safe mode. I have followed the directions as well as possible and am posting the required info from the scans. When I called Dell they told me to do a control alt del and I had 54 processes running, which surprised each tech I talked to but, is this a surprise to anyone, none of them could do anything about it. I am using AOL and I suspect that uses a lot of space, but I am not a very compentent computer person. I saw a commercial yesterday where a PC uses has a discussion with an Apple person and the PC person says something about erasing all the unnecessary Microsoft software. A friend did advice that I use Itunes instead of the Dell musicmatch which seems like an awful program. Itunes seems to work better, but is there something I can do to make my system more sensible.
I have never posted here before and would like to thank, in advance, anyone who replies.

Jim

A:My new Dell with microsoft XP was slow out of the box

Hi Jim and welcome to TSF....

54 processes is a little high but to be honest, i've seen worse :-)

Usually with new machines with pre-installed software, there is a lot of stuff running that isn't really needed but in order to be able to advise which things you can disable, I would be grateful if you could include some screenshots of your task manager in your next post so I know exactly what things are running.

Also, if you do the following for me please:

- Click Start -> Run -> type:
services.msc
- Click OK
- This will launch your services console and show which services are set to start with Windows. If you could take some screenshots of here as well, that would be cool as a lot of services are not needed to be running when Windows starts and will usually slow the machine down a bit.

Finally, I would be grateful if you could advise on some system specs such as CPU and RAM please?

Thanks :-)

A:help - Dell laptop slow

Looks fine. How much memory do you have?

I have a Dell Inspiron 5100 Laptop with a Broadcom truemobile 1400 Wireless Lan Card. My DSL isp (verizon) provides me with 2.7 MBps on my Dell Dimension PC, yet on my Laptop I cannot get above 78 Kbytes.

I have a friend with the same Dell laptop model as mine with a Broadcom truemobile 1350 card and he too got 2.7 MBps on his laptop going wireless through my router.

I cannot understand why my speeds are so slow. I have a very clean machine running Windows XP Home. I have NO spyware and a "Squeeky Clean" registry. All drivers, including LAN card are completely up to date, all windows up to date, etc.

I tried to connect through my router via cable to see if the problem was with my wireless LAN card and still got the 78 Kbyte speed. I have tried everything to increase speed to no avail. I live in a rural area (Camden, Maine USA) and pay an "arm and a leg" for the 3 MBps DSL service and this is driving me nuts.

If anyone has any ideas or has experienced the same problem and has a fix I would really appreciate learning how you overcame it.

Thanks!
Rick

A:Slow DSL on Dell Laptop

Iv'e personally found a dramatic increase in web browsing after clearing the Windows XP DNS cache.

To clear it type the following in a command prompt: ipconfig /flushdns

To start a command prompt:

go to...

start
run
type in:ipconfig /flushdns

let me know if you cannot do this.

Hi,

My Dell Inspiron 6000 Laptop (1.8 Ghz centrino, 1GB RAM) has been giving trouble for some time now. It's running very slowly with CPU most of the time at 100% with no specific process in task manager hogging it. Boot up (and hard disk seek time) is very slow.

My HijackThis log is below if you guys can spot something.

Cheers,

Nish

A:Super Slow Dell - please help with HJT log

You have two antivirus products installed and running in real time which will seriously impair the performance of your system, create dire instability and actually reduces your system's security level. You should decide which to keep and uninstall the other.

Next, please run HijackThis again and check the box next to these:
O1 - Hosts: ::1 localhost
O1 - Hosts: 195.245.119.131 browser-security.microsoft.com
O1 - Hosts: 195.245.119.131 www.spyware-protector-2009.com
O1 - Hosts: 195.245.119.131 secure.spyware-protector-2009.com

...close all windows now except for the hijackthis application's window (that includes this browser window). Now click the Fix Checked button. Reboot the computer and post back a fresh HijackThis log. Advise how the system is behaving for you now and if you are having any other issues. Thanks!

hello, this computer i've been using is running pretty slow. i can't run programs such as minecraft, paint tool sai, even google chrome without it getting upset and slowing down. i can't do normal things like defrag/erase user accounts/run other programs to help clear space w/o it, again, running really slow.

i know next to nothing about this computer, seeing as it hasn't always been mine. it belongs to the family i live with, the only other user being a 12 y/o girl who constantly adds new bookmarks, saves a million pictures, and downloads a million browser extensions.

what can i do to make this computer run faster? thanks in advance

edit: i decided to post on a forum once i was running minecraft and it just... CLOSED... i was so mad!

A:pretty slow dell pc

What's the model name and model number of that Dell?

What's the 7-character "service tag" number on the sticker?

----------------------------------------------------------

Right-click My Computer, then click Properties.

When the system properties window appears, select the "General" tab.

Advise what's listed in the Computer: section - EXACTLY as you see it there.

----------------------------------------------------------

Go to Start - Run - MSCONFIG - OK - "Startup" tab.

Write down ONLY the names in the "Startup Item" column that have a checkmark next to them.

If the "Startup Item" column isn't wide enough to see the entire name of any of them, widen the column.

Submit those names here in a vertical list.

Make sure to spell them EXACTLY as you see them there.

I am having problems with my Dell Dimension 5100 - running XP Pro SP2.
It seems to be getting slower and slower - with intermittent prolonged disk activity and occasional USB device malfunctioned messages.
CHKDSK also tells me that there are problems when run from CMD prompt (and these seem to vary between reboots), but when run at boot time (with /f or /r) it finds no problems.

Any suggestions?

Hi, I know next to nothing about most of what I'm finding on this site, but the step-by-steps are helpful!

My Dell Insprion 1525 is running so slow, I can barely even run internal scans to find out what's wrong. It just took over 90 minutes to run my "Windows Experience Index." iTunes is no longer running, it just crashes.

I followed all the instructions in "Is your computer running slow?"...no luck. Still slow. So I ran the dds scanner as instructed; I can upload the scan results files upon request.

Thanks for any advice!!!

This is a Dell Inspiron running XP Home w/SP2, 512 M RAM. It generally runs slow, but most troublesome is the slow boot time. It especially hangs for several minutes at the XP splash screen, then several more on the welcome screen. also takes a long time to open programs (FireFox, Control Panel, etc.) I have ran all the usual (and not so usual) malware routines (SpyBot, AdAware, Ccleaner, Combofix, AVG AntiSpyware, etc.). Nothing of interest there. I have ran chkdsk and defrag, turned off all startup items in msconfig, and turned off all non-microsoft services, to no avail. I have searched through this and other forums, also with no luck. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.
Thanks.

Slow Dell Laptop
Greetings,
I have a Dell Inspiron Laptop that belonged to one of my nephews. He obviously was not security minded. The computer is extremely slow and every program that I open will default into "Not Responding" in short time. I cannot access the internet except in safe mode, which I am in now. I would like to provide more details about the system but Belarc Advisor will not run in safe mode.
I have run all malware removal tools in safe mode (Spy-Bot, Malwarebytes, AVG Anti Virus and Super Anti-Spyware) and have followed directions from each. One item that came up was called PUP.OPTIONAL. Hitman Pro eliminated a lot of tracking cookies as well. I was asked to resubmit this thread from another forum.

I have followed the directions as well as possible and am posting the required info from the scans. Thank you in advance for any advice:

Advanced SystemCare 6

We do not recommend the use of registry cleaners, or the registry cleaner feature of CCleaner. Our colleague miekiemoes has an excellent writeup here

We suggest uninstalling Advanced SystemCare 6 via Add or Remove Programs in your Control Panel.

------------------------------------------------------

Please download AdwCleaner from here and save it to your desktop.Run AdwCleaner and select Delete
Once done it will ask to reboot, please allow the reboot.
On reboot, a log will be produced. It can also be found at C:\AdwCleaner[S#].txt
Please copy/paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

Hi,

My mother's Dell laptop (running Windows XP) has somehow become so incredibly, incredibly slow. It is so slow that it takes about 15 minutes from clicking a mouse button to something happening on the laptop.

I tried to do a system restore, going back to a restore point as far back as possible (the restore point was in July 2009). This of course took a very long time to do because the computer is so slow. Unfortunately, the restore failed to work, so now I don't know what to do.

I have thought about reinstalling Windows but for some reason the CDs that came with the computer only seem to have ISP and anti virus software on them and not Windows XP. Strange.

OK, any ideas? Might it be a virus? If it is, how to fix it, bearing in mind that everything takes a long, long, looooooooong time to happen?

Many many thanks.

A:Very, very, very slow Dell laptop

Unfortunately this happens to many people over time and can be a big hassle to fix. Im assuming that the laptop has internet access so what you need to do is first go to hxxp://greateasygames.webs.com" and once there click on Anti Virus... and once that page loads click on the Free Download button right below Spybot. Once the program is downloaded install it. Open the program and update it. No need to backup the registry cuz it will just make it worst. Once the program is updated click scan for problems i think its called and let it do that. It may take a long time though but once done your laptop will hopefully be working good again, and please post back with the results.

A friend asked me to look at his PC as it was taking an age to boot up. I have removed a number of unwanted programmes, stopped a few things starting at boot up but it still seems a little slow, plus I am at the limit of where I am happy to fiddle so to speak

The PC it a Dell Dimension DIM 2400
P4 2.80Ghz 1.5Gb RAM

Could someone have a look at the attched HJT Log and Start Up to see if there is anything which needs tinkering with please? An online scan at Trend suggests there is no current threats.

Thanks in anticipation

I have a two year old Dell PC with Windows 7. I got a virus in my computer that by phone and computer takeover Norton located in my MBR. When they cleaned it my computer will no longer boot up. Norton worked with me for three days on the problem but we were unable to fix the computer. I followed other web sites and repaired my MBR but it still will not boot up. I tried System Repair, Check point, Image, and Dell system restore and all failed. I have tried to use the Windows install CD and all I get is a black screen with a flashing cursor and then after 3 minutes the compute attempts to boot again and fails. I tried everything to try and wipe the drive from C prompt and it will not let me. I have very weak computer skills but I can follow directions and I have wiped a previous computer I owned. (I confirmed that my CD drive is working) I also should mention I have a second hard drive on my computer that I backed everything up to.

A:Dell Computer PC will not load Windows install CD from computer crash

See if you can reset the BIOS hardware/software connections and then clear the CMOS to access your Windows 7 install disc.
Resetting hardware/software connections in the BIOS and clearing temporary memory of corruption:Shut down and turn off the computer.
Unplug the computer from the wall or surge protector (then remove the battery if it is a laptop).
"Remove the computer from any port replicator or docking station, disconnect
cables to printers or devices such as external monitors, USB memory sticks or SD cards, headset or external speakers, mouse or auxiliary keyboard, turn off WIFI and Bluetooth wireless devices." (Use Hard Reset to Resolve Hardware and Software Issues HP Pavilion dv5000 Notebook PC series - HP Customer Care (United States - English))
Hold down the power button for 30 seconds. This closes the circuit and ensures all
power from components is drained to clear the software connections between the BIOS
and hardware and clear any corruption in the temporary memory.
(If it is a laptop, plug the battery back into the laptop and then) Plug the computer back into the wall. Do not reconnect any unnecessary peripherals; monitor, keyboard,
and mouse should suffice and be the only peripherals reconnected.
Turn it on to reinitialize the software connections between the BIOS and hardware

Clear the CMOS:Use your system manual to find instructions for accessing the BIOS...
In the BIOS, go to the EXIT screen...
Choose load setup/optimized defaults... Read more

I am working on my sons Dell Laptop - It has become to slow to work with:
Its a Dell Inspiron E1505
80 GB HD
1 GB Ram
It took 9 minutes to boot up and was very slow opening anything.
There was a sticky Vundo virus and others.
With the helpful tips on this site and others I was able to get it to about a 5-6 minute boot up and I think the Vundo is gone. The boot up is still so long and it runs slow. Please help!

Greetings,

Currently my Dell laptop takes a very long time to shutdown.  I may have changed a setting somewhere but I don't remember what.  Might be related to clearing the page file on shutdown but not sure.

Any suggestions on what to look for?  I have no virus, have run the various utilities on this web site and still have the same problem (AdwCleaner, JRT, Combofix).

Dell XPS 1702X, Win 7 Pro, 64 bit, 8 GB mem Core i7

Thanks in advance,

Recently my XPS has slowed down considerably, posting very slow benchmarks on 3Dmark2001 and Aquamark3. Also, the cooling fans run all the time, even when just sitting idle at the desktop.
The real problem is that I can't play CS:S anymore, causing me great duress. I used to get 40fps or better, has dropped to 9fps, even off-line playing.
The HJT log file looks okay to me, but maybe someone better qualified could look and see if there is something running that shouldn't be. Much thanks in advance.

Hello all,

I just finished wiping a friends laptop with a fresh copy of Windows XP Pro SP3. A couple days later I went to use it after it installed Microsoft Office 2007 Pro Plus. IT was extremely slow afterwards. Extremely slow means it took 15 minutes just to pull up the Start Menu. I removed all traces of Office and it was still slow so I did a clean install on Windows Vista (Which it shipped with) however the install itself is taking ages as well... Can anyone tell me what has happened??? I am at a loss and I just want this thing to start working again. I have also tried resetting the BIOS back to default settings and still nothing!

A:Dell Inspiron 1525 very slow

Could be a simple hardware problem..make sure everything in bios is reading correctly (amount of ram, CPU clock speed, etc).
a fam member had a 1525, and it died spectaculary. Maybe they just arent good laptops.
If its not the above, IDK. new OS would be first suggestion, but apparently you did that already.

I have a Dell XPS 8700 running WIN 7 professional with Service Pack 1.

About two weeks ago I started having problems with more than one window open or running more than one program at a time. It was sporadic. This morning it is all the time.

Very slow accessing Internet Explorer or Chrome. Hangs trying to move from site to site. Can't access e-mail while accessing internet.

I run Panda antivirus and have it scanning every day. I use Malware Bytes once a week. Today I used online Trend Micro and nothing showed up. However I wonder if I picked up a virus or malware.

Any ideas? I really need my computer today!

Thanks for any help!

Sue

Hello,
I have an issue with an insanely slow Dell desktop running XP. I had installed Revo Uninstaller, and ran the 'Evidence Remover'. After 24 hours, it seemed to have froze, so I rebooted. Since then, the slowness has been extraordinary to the extent where it is unusable. I have tried

- booting in safe mode (still slow)
- clearing the registry
- reverting to the system restore point

There is 768Mb of RAM. In the task manager, there is one system process that is showing 143K of memory being utilized, though this higher number is not present in safe mode.

How should I proceed from here?

Thanks so much.

I just purchased a new Dell Inspiron 15 3558 two days ago. The first day, boot was slow and I thought it was due to the computer setting everything up for first use. Now its been two days and I still have the same problem. I noticed that the dell logo appears twice, once with the loading circle spinning and the other time with the loading circle frozen. It also takes about 130 seconds for me to get to the login screen. When i log in, everything takes some time to load and the windows start menu and search don't work until after 30 seconds. I have to wait an additional minute for everything to load properly. Also, whenever i play games that I can support, they are slow on low graphics and after I exit a game, my laptop becomes unusable. I usually have to restart my laptop for it to work without freezing or any lag. I just bought this laptop brand new and the specs are decent. Why do I have so many problems?

My Specs are:
Fifth Gen i3-5015u CPU (2.1GHz), 1TB HDD, 4GB RAM, Intel HD 5500 Graphics

It seems I am not the only tech fighting the Dell win2k slow network delima. I run 120 Dell optiplex GX 150\260\400 fast ethernet machines through a stack of 8 Nortel 450 switches.
I have 8 assorted Dell servers. All workstations run win2k as do most of our servers. We still run 3 NT4 domain controllers as our network system. My slowdown is very bad taking 2 minutes to open a 1.5 Mb Excel file. The slowdown only occurs between Dell machines running win2k. If I install NT4 I do not have a slowdown.
If I install win2k on a Compaq EVO300s I have no slowdown.
I have had my network tested with a 30,000 dollar fluke and no hardware issues were found. My arcserve V9 backs up at 1000+ MB per minute locally and under 50 MB per minute over the wire.
All win2k installs have SP3 and all bios upgrades have been done as well as upgraded drivers for NICS and SCSI adapters.
New and different NICS have been tried. Nothing to date has affected the slow response except removing the Novell client (latest with all patches). THis speeds up the access some but is not an option for most of my users. I have tried all of the tweeks from Microsoft which made things worse. All they did was slow down my Novell access, badly.
Has anyone fought and won this battle???
after 4 months of fighting it I have run out of things to try.
Thanks, Jim

Hi,
I just bought a new dell xps 2 days ago (Dell XPS 13 - 13.3 inch touchscreen - XPS9343-6364SLV), the internet is running horribly slow. I have good internet connect (as I just my old laptop/current ipad, phone on the wifi and have absolutely no problems).
The wireless card that's installed 'Dell Wireless 1560 802.11ac'. I also just upgraded to windows 10 (as the free version was released 2 days ago).
Can someone please advise on how to fix this? The machine is great but I wont be able to keep it if this is how the wifi works. It's taking 10~15 seconds to open a simple webpage and youtube videos are taking long times to buffer.
Please help!

Hello Tech Support Guy,

I have a Dell laptop with Windows XP which I use for web surfing, email (MS Outlook), other MS applications and picture/file transferring. When I start up the system, it runs fine, but then after having it on for a few hours with a few apps open, it slows down...a lot. I've already moved many of my picture files to my external hard drive and removed some unnecessary apps. Can someone take a look at my HJT log and see if there's anything that could be slowing my system down?

Normal install (32-bit)
Standard GX520, no addon cards.
I haven't installed any new drivers/apps. I literally just clean installed the RC (build 7100) over a copy of XP Pro (the usual windows dual boot menu at start) and XP is still fine but when I log into win 7 it's slow as can be. incredibly slow is how I would describe it. Anyway the weird thing is the CPU usage and memory usage are low so I can't figure it out. maybe it's disk usage but I can't even run any portable diagnostic software because it's so damn slow. Is there anything I can check. it must be something simple. And I'm sure somebody else has tried it on a GX520 business machine. Any help is much appreciated.

I just bought a Dell computer, and it's lagging really bad. My 5 year old PC runs better than it.

I've gone through and made sure the video drivers are up to date, as well as disabled most of the crap that wants to start up with Windows.

But for some reason the lag won't go away. The hard drive light is constantly flickering like it's installing something too.

Also, my video card has 256mb... Why does the report say it has 600something mb?!

I'm confused and disgruntled. Help me someone!!

Thanks!!

A:My hi specs dell laptop is too slow

When you purchased the laptop, did you erase all the bloatware that usually comes along with it? You can look into optimizing the laptop by getting rid of services and processes you don't need and you can think about purchasing a SSD for a real speed increase in read/write. This forum has great guides that can help you optimize your laptop, you can take a look at them here : Tutorials - Windows 7 Help Forums

Hi. I have a Dell Inspiron 1200 Laptop running on XP.  I recently had it reformatted by my regular computer tech.  Within a week it was running very slow, and within two weeks it was totally unusable except in Safe Mode.  It is now running as what I would describe GLACIALLY slow.

I have done many of the usual things -- run Malwarebytes, run antivirus, defragged, etc., -- but noting
seems to help.

This forum has always given me the greatest help.

Thanks in advance for your insights.

Hi, first post in any forum, so I appreciate yourpatience. Have multiple challenges withDell Dimension 8400. This computer isextremely slow at startup, during operation, and shutdown. Sometimes blue screen check disk for error occursat startup; sometimes black screen with white flashing cursor bar in upper leftside of screen occurs at startup and shutdown. Have windows xp with 150 GB hard drive and is almost full (147.5GB). Has been suggested by localcomputer store to install new hard drive and all original discs are needed toreinstall. Some software I purchasedonline and have no disc. Not sure whatto do there. In other techguy posts, ithas been suggested to add more ram, which I can do if needed and to runsuperantispyware and malwarebytes anti-malware; I will do that. Computer usage is primarily MS Office, internet, AutoCAD, photoshop, and movie studio.

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I will post results as soon as possible.

Thanks,

HELP!! My laptop is moving DESPERATELY Slow. I can't navigate on it because everything takes forever! I have a Dell Inspiron 2200 Laptop, with Windows XP. I usually connect to the internet through a wireless connection to my office desktop PC. I also usually leave my laptop open and running. About a week ago I went to use it had some kind of an error and had done an auto reboot and when it came back up, it had reset to the defaul settings, which means I lost everything I had saved on it for the past 3 years (a lot of it I had saved on a jump drive, however). Anyway, ever since then, it has been CRAWLING. It takes 10 seconds to open the simplest file folder from my desktop. I have AVG running, as well as Ewido Anti-Malware. I ran the AdAware and CleanUp 4.0 programs, as well as a Registry Repair. Looks like it cleaned up a lot of junk, but they don't seem to have the computer speed much. I have Vundo loaded and ran it, but it suggests that I enter a filepath name that I can get from a Tech Support site after I run HiJack This. So I ran HiJack This and here is my log:

Hi there, I am running a Dell Inspiron 1501 bought at Christmas. OS is XP Home.

I've never been overly impressed with the speed but over the months it has got slower and slower and is now virtually unusable unless you've got hours to waste.

It takes forever to load up, forever to open a program and forever to complete a task. Ask it to open two programs and you can just forget it. Can anyone help??

For a while now my laptop starts very slowly and seems like it is hanging. I don't think I have any spyware or viruses from the scans I have run. Eventually it gets going and is ok but sometimes that can take a very long time.

When I run hijack this it seems to hang on O15, occasionally crashes but usually eventually gets through to end.

Please could you have a look and see if there is anything I have missed:

Welcome to TSG bluebios!

Are referring to a Clean Boot Or did they change selected items? If you didn't do a clean boot I suggest you do so.

Hi all,

My computer has been slowing down lately. I downloaded SpyBot which seemed to find a lot of stuff that PCTools did not seem to and so I deleted a lot of stuff. The computer seemed to be running better. However, lately the computer has slowed down again and now takes approximately 10 minutes from "turn on" before it can be effectively used. I am unsure if this is an infection that is getting worse or not.

Please help.

A:My Dell laptop is dead slow. what to do?

With all the different anti-virus it wouldn't surprise me if remnants were left behind slowing things down. Regardless, if it were my laptop, I'd back up my docs, photos, music etc and reinstall Windows. Pick one AV and stick with it. I recommend Avira or MSE
