Q: This action cannot be completed because the other program is busy etc..

Hi,

Today I keep getting this famous window popping up in the middle of my screen and no matter how many times I reboot it reappears again.
I know you've had threads on this before but I thought I should post a log from Hijack This in case my version is specific:

By the way I'm using Firefox not Internet Explorer

Help?!?

I installed a driver that I was told I needed by CompanionLink software in order to sync my new Samsung Galaxy phone with my Palm Desktop. I think it was an "adb" driver and it no longer appears to be in the system. In any case, during that process, several programs crashed, including SnagIt, which I now have running again after a reinstall. BUT...now I can't open my Palm Desktop and ALL of my info and contacts are in there. When I try to open it, I get an error message labeled "Server Busy" and the rest of it says "This action cannot be completed because the other program is busy. Choose 'Switch To' to activate the busy program and correct the problem." There's an option to Retry and an option to Switch To, but neither one works. I have to use Task Manager to force quit Palm.exe. I'm rather desperate to solve this as I need the contact information for business. (Windows XP Pro, SP3) TSG Sysinfo run and log is below...

Any help greatly appreciated,

Recently an issue has appeared on my laptop, an HP Pvilion G6 running Windows 7 64 bit with SP1 and all latest updates with an Intel Core i5 2.3 processor and 4.Gb RAM.

Shortly after booting and arriving at the desktop and before opening any programs a dial up connection window opens with no input from myself, prompting me to choose which service I want to connect to followed soon after by anther window with the title ‘Server Busy’ and the following text. ‘This action cannot be completed because the other program is busy Choose ‘Switch to’ to activate the busy program and correct the problem.’ Beneath this are three buttons, from left to right they’re labelled Switch To… , Retry and Cancel. Cancel is greyed out. Pressing Switch To… opens the start menu, presumably to allow me to select the busy program but there’s no indication of which is the problematic program so I just close the start menu. When the start menu opens the Server Busy window closes briefly but reappears after a second and the loop continues. Pressing the retry button makes the window disappear briefly only to immediately reappear. It seems impossible to get rid of this window.

I uninstalled Nokia Ovi Suite which I sometimes use to use my phone as a modem. I thought it was something to do with this because that was the service listed in the Dial Up Connection window. The problem persisted so I performed scans using Avira, Malwarebytes, ... Read more

When trying to rename a new folder in Windows 7, the user gets the message "the action can't be completed because the folder or a file in it is open in another program." We have tried turning off indexing for the parent folder. We can delete the folder. We just can't rename it. It has 'Read-only' attribute. Any suggestions?

Try this: File Unlocker.

The problem is I don't know what program has the folder open. How do I find out which program it is so I can close it and move the folder to another location?

Whenever I try to move or rename files (or anything else that would change something about it), I frequently get the message "The action can't be completed because the file is open in another program." The thing is, it's not open in any program.

It usually happens immediately after it was open, though. It also usually happens with movie files. So, I'll watch a movie file, close WMP and try to change the filename, and it'll give this message. I have to wait for about two or three minutes before I can change it. It's very frustrating to have to wait every time I need to change a file. Is there a way to fix this?

I have a couple of Word 7 files which can't be moved, deleted or renamed. Any attempt results in a message: This action cannot be completed as it is in use by another program. It is not in use by any program I am aware of. When I open the file, it says (Read Only) in the title bar but the properties dialogue boxes are not checked as read only. Of course, I can't save any changes to the file unless I go to 'save as' but that still leaves me with an undeletable/uneditable file. I am using Vista Ultimate. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:This action cannot be completed...

Unless you're particularly interested in the mechanics of why this might be happening, I'd suggest booting to safe mode (press the F8 key early during Windows startup) and moving or deleting the files from there. You probably won't have trouble deleting the files that way.

The action can?t be completed because the folder or a file in it is open in another program. I suspect that my anti virus, Norton 360, is stopping me from deleting a specific folder, it happens only in one specific folder.
When I restart my computer, it takes time to the regular background tasks to "wake up", so I can delete it once the computer turns on, but then something stops me from deleting the folder. I am not sure if it is Norton 360, or another problem.
Would it be a Malware?

Try right clicking on the 360 icon in your notification area. You should be able to disable protection features for a specified time. Remember that you are unprotected while doing this, so you should disconnect from the Internet while doing this. Remember to reset the protection when you are finished.

hi guys,

every single time I try to rename a folder the boring message "The action can't be completed because the folder or the file is in use" appears even if apparently neither the folder or a file in it is in use.

What I have to do is: Task Manager > Explorer.exe > End Process > File > New Task > Explorer.exe and I am able to rename the folder.

It is a really boring process and I find this process really stupid. The folders I am trying to rename are full of pictures, I think it is something related to the Thumbs files.

Anybody of you have the same issue? Any possible solution?

Thanks

G'day, I'm running Windows 7 Home premium on a Dell Inspiron laptop.

When I am trying to organise my music files and folders in my music Library I randomly get this error:

The action can't be completed because the folder or a file in it is open in another program.

But there can be nothing else open, no media player, (neither WMP or Media Monkey which I usually use), or any other window open at all. This is intermittent. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't.

For example; I just discovered that I have a Chris De Burgh folder with a couple albums in it and another folder titled Chris De Burgh - Greatest Hits. I decided to move the latter into the former and rename the latter to simply Greatest Hits. At first it wouldn't copy into the Chris de Burgh folder at all and the dreaded error came up. I clicked on another folder, went back and tried again and it worked. After putting the CDB-GH folder into the CDB one I tried to rename it, (without opening it). The action can't be completed blah blah blah. Retry doesn't work. This time I had to close windows explorer and open it again and browse to the folder and rename it.

Sometimes it works first go, sometimes you have to click elsewhere then come back to it, sometimes you have to close explorer, sometimes it simply refuses until I restart the pooter. I've tried deleting everything in the temp folder, (%temp%) but there are files in here which won't delete either coming up with the same message. I guarantee that the f... Read more

This is kind of driving me a bit bonkers now, as I am trying to organize the files on my system, and am consistently butting heads against this problem. It always seems to be the last file I highlight. In other words.. I have two directories open on the screen, and am simply looking to drag files/folders from one directory to another. To do this, you almost always have to highlight the folder you want to move, and doing this seems to put a lock on that folder. If I highlight more folders, it seems to be ok, except for the last one I highlight will always fail to copy.

Any way to prevent windows from locking files in this way?

First, a bit of background. I had just recently installed my Logitech Webcam software, and later on today I've deleted the installer to the recycle bin and am trying to empty the recycle bin. When I do this, I get this message:http://img64.imageshack.us/img64/7600/capturerhf.jpgFirstly, why is this happening in the first place? It's simply an installer? The application itself has installed fine and I should have no problem deleting the installer, right? What does it mean, "because file is open in Application Experience"? What on earth is this? Also, why is the file named "lws201_full.exe", yet in that image I have provided, it's called "$RX8JXFZ.exe"? Also worth noting that the file is 0 bytes in the image I provided, yet the original file itself is 114 MB . Say what?!The file deletes itself fine if I cancel or try again, but I still don't understand why this happens. Thanks so much for your assistance in clarifying this issue for me.

Hi,
I have been googling this for days now - trying several different suggestions - but cannot find a fix!

I am in the midst of tranferring data from old computer (Windows Vista) to new computer (Windows 7 Pro) and was placing folders/files on network drive to do so. For 95% of the items, it worked like a charm - I would copy onto my new computer and then delete them from network drive.

However I am left with 5 folders with a few files in each that I cannot delete! Error message is:
The action can't be completed because the file is open in another program. Close the file and try again.

I've tried renaming, Unlocker, stopped windows from caching thumbnails, and a few more than I can't even remember!

I am not a computer whiz by any means and am afraid to attempt anymore on my own in case I mess something up!!

Any help would be appreciated - I am all googled out!!!

Thanks!

When I try to move a folder into another folder (sub-folders into the main "MY DOCS" folder, I get the error message: "The action can't be completed because the folder or a file in it is open. Close the file and try again."

NO, no other folders are open; went to task manager and made sure. No backup running. I've tried a web search others have had this issue. The suggestion was to empty the temp folder, but this didn't help.

Any advice? This happens for ANY folder I try to dump into the main one.

Hello,

My system:
MS Windows XP Pro SP2 + all updates
Dial-up Internet connection

The problem:
When I turn the computer on then try to log on to the Internet, I am kept waiting for up to half an hour and sometimes longer because I am told by Windows that the modem is being used by another program.

When I go into Task Manager there are no applications running that require to use the modem. In the "Processes" window I can't identify which one could be doing so.

The question:
How do I identify just what it is that is tying up my modem and not allowing me to log onto the Internet?

Thanks in advance.
Lane

A:How do I identify which program is keeping my modem busy?

There are many ways to figure this out. Personally, I prefer ProcessExplorer (from Microsoft/Sysinternals). You can research the running processes and view their TCP/IP activity. You can download it totally free at http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/ProcessExplorer.mspx

If you have a firewall, you may also be able to view the software and traffic that go through it as well.

For deeper research, you can also run a packet sniffer such as Wireshark. It's more technical and usually requires experience with computer networking to understand.

Hey guys,

I posted this also on Tomshardware.com as I'm trying to find a definite solution to my HDD issue. Hoping to find some potential solutions here as well.

I've been noticing lately that my hard drive seem to always be busy processing. It doesn't matter what I do...it's as if something is working in the background. Now the only change was last month when my video card died and I replaced it with a new one (Radeon HD7750) but I don't see how it would related...or does it?

In any case, my computer isn't new. It's a Dell Dimension 9200. The current hard drive is the original: A 500gb Samsung HD501LG. I ran a whole bunch of different programs to check the disc such as HDTune and Active Smart and so on. All say drive is ok so I'm confused. The only message I received was from the Performance Monitor saying, "The average disk queue length is 2. The disk may be at its maximum transfer capacity due to throughput and disk seeks".

I had done a clean install about 4 months ago and not even half of what is currently on my HDD is back on as back then I realized I had too many games installed and didn't play them. Hence there is even less data on . Indexing is off, defrag is off. One thing I can point out is that some of the PC games I... Read more

Louis,This issue may occur if the Outlook registry key is corrupted. When other programs try to use the Outlook Simple MAPI interface, they cannot retrieve the required information from the registry. You must first remove the corrupted Outlook registry key, and then perform a Detect and Repair operation to have Outlook rebuild the key. To do this, follow these steps:
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type regedit, and then press ENTER.
In Registry Editor, locate the following subkey in the registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Clients\Mail\Microsoft Outlook
Select the subkey, and then press DELETE.
Click Yes.
Quit Registry Editor.
Start Outlook.
On the Help menu, click Office Diagnostics.
Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the repair.

Important: Above section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. This is a bit odd problem to me.

Whenever I try to change any file's default program through right-click>open with>change default program, I get this:

"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel."

But... I can open my PC management. I can change the default program via right-click>properties>Change, and I can open explorer.exe. I can double-click it to open it with the default program.

The reason I want this to be fixed is to get a bit faster way to open my pictures in my image editing program WITHOUT making the file type default.

How to fix this?

"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create and association in the Set Associations control panel"

Hi everyone!
I have been having a problem with my computer for several days now. Opening all programs causes me to recieve this error message. I have to use right click + Run as Administrator to use any of my programs. I have done some forum surfing and tried several recommended techniques for correcting this problem but to no avail. I downloaded the exefix_vista reg file but the very same problem prevents me from merging it (I even tried fixing the reg extension but that failed aswell). I have run the sfc/scannow in command propmt but that came up empty. I would have fresh installed but I am away from home and do not have the means to reinstall vista. I apologize if this post seems in any way redundant but my forum searches have failed me. HELP! PLEASE!

Slowness issues aside, it is telling you that the file you are trying to play is not associated with a media player. In Windows Explorer, right click on the file, choose "Open With - Choose Program", and then select your media player or browse to the media player exe file.

You may also need to install video codecs to support that file type.

Help! My computer (OS Windows 7) carried out a Windows Update overnight. On booting up this morning, when I try to open a file using is it "Windows Explorer"? (what I call file manager), I get a red cross dialogue box saying that "This File does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please instal a program, or if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel."

This might as well be written in greek as far as I'm concerned. Everything else appears to work OK (Outlook and Internet Explorer), but I can't access my Word or Excel files other than by locating the recently used files in the Word or Excel applications themselves.

Hi Skscivicracing,

Welcome to the forum.

You just will just need to reassociate your .exe file extensions.

Go to this link below and click on the exe in the box and download and save the exefix_vista.zip file to your desktop. Just follow the rest of the Usage Instructions at the site. This should fix your problem for you.

This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel. This is the window that pops up when I double click any .exe file. This all started with the Vista Anti-Virus 2011 adware or whatever it is. I attempted to manually delete the program following the intructions from this site ( Vista Anti-Virus 2011 Removal Guide). It did help me to be able to use the internet and stop the unwanted program from working. But now I can't open anything except the Internet and Outlook from the programs menu in the bottom left corner. This is frustrating. Short on funds and I was wondering if this is an easy fix? Thanks for your time.

I tried downloading something off of the Windows website and this message popped up. I even tried the exefix_xp.com link I saw on another thread relating to this. I also went and tried to fix it manually like this....
If Registry Editor opened successfully, navigate to the following key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ exefile \ shell \ open \ command.
Double-click the (Default) value in the right hand pane and delete the current value data, and then type:
"%1" %* exactly as shown including the quotes and asterisk.
Navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe
In the right-hand pane, set (default) to exefile
Exit the Registry Editor.

But everything was already set to those changes.
How can this be fixed? Please help!!

I recently resorted to manual removal of malware via the registry (the malware *is* gone, & is not the issue). However, .exe files no longer work, giving the error message "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel."

This error is returned even with cmp (opened via Run, cmp.exe, or Command Prompt) and regedit (opened via Run).

The issue I believe was caused by failure to set the (Default) registry values to "%1" %* - instead simply deleting them.

Thus far I have been unable to locate any .com exefix files for Windows 7.

Links to an appropriate exefix file, or instructions for another fix would be greatly appreciated.

I ran Disk Defragmenter on my computer while using mozilla firefox. I closed the browser and reopened it and got the following message:

"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel."

I tried opening other programs such as Limewire and Internet Explorer, and got the same message. I went to the control panel and any icon I click gives me that same error, I can only go to the Folder Options in the "Tools" menu.

I also tried START>RUN>REGEDIT and get the same message. I'm not sure how this happened. I have tried going into safe mode, and I was able to log in as the "Owner" but when I tried logging in as the Administrator, it seemed to never load up. Even in safe mode I have the same problem. I believe the computer is using Service Pack 3.

I thought maybe trying System Restore might solve the problem, but I Can't even access that, I get the same message. I can't even go into Add/Remove programs.

I'm out of ideas, any help is welcome please.

A:This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action.

Limewire is my #1 source of income to do the repair needed to clean-up the malware that it brings in. I'd look for malware first.

If your system files are corrupted, damaged and/or infected by malware, System Restore will not help you, in fact even a Repair Install may be ineffective. Your inability to boot to Safe Mode indicates serious system file corruption.

First thing, boot using a Windows XP disk to Recovery Console and run:

1) fixboot
2) fixmbr
3) chkdsk /r

Then, boot to Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key. If you can get to Safe Mode, use Start>Run>MSCONFIG and turn off everything except the microsoft services and reboot.

If you can get this far, get help on malware removal in the Securities Forum.

But if i go to File menu at the toolbar or right click to context menu and click the item such as convert video/show how to open this file the message appear.

I already try to fix the registry through this www.winhelponline.com but nothing change instead i got an error message cmd.exe not properly close when i shutdown my computer.

Thanks

"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the folder options in control panel." This is the error message i get when i try open shortcuts such as my computer, my documents, control panel. only system shortcuts not .exe shortcuts. This came about when i logged on one day and it said my registry had been changed, I've tried playing around in shortcut settings and folder options etc, there is nothing there that can work. if i go into the shortcuts properties and say open with windows explorer, it works but it won't allow me to always open with windows explorer. i am guessing there is a registry entry changed, does anyone know what key i might have to change to fix this? Cheers.

A:This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action.

Try a system restore to a point just before the issue started.
From Start Menu/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore.
Choose Restore my computer to an earlier time, pick a point closet to when you noticed the problem.
Follow the prompts, the computer will reboot, you will be told either it was successful or not.
If it is, see if function is restored.
Please post back and let us know whether it was or wasn't.

Hi, I am having the same problem that Kaktuz was having, but I cannot get the run > cmd to execute. My computer says that Windows cannot open the file and asks whether to use a web service or select a program from the list.
I recently updated my antivirus software and had it run all night, then this morning told my spybot to deny changes that had something to do with %1. I think this may be the root of my problem, but I am not sure how to undo the denial. Any suggestions?
I cannot open any file with a .exe extension, so I'm searching for help with a friend's computer.
Any suggestions would be great. Thanks!

I also want to apologize to rbalaji - I was not intending to hijack anything, just saying that what worked for the person on the initial thread did not work for me.

Hi there,
I'm having an error (The file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. create an association in the set Associations controll panel) only when i try to play a DVD or a CD though, the autostart menu doesn't appear when i insert the disk and if I double click on the cd or dvd the error appears. I tried Merging the .exe file but didn't fix anything
Any ideas please?

A:The file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action

Hi ndrepebx, go to start menu > settings > control panel > autoplay.... and set your preferences.

to make a program open a file by default go here:
start menu > settings > control panel > default programs > "Set Default Programs" OR "Set a file type or protocol with a program" ....depending on which you need.

hope that helps

I was installed Norton Antivirus 2008, and then all of the sudden, I kept getting this message, "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action." When I restarted, none of my executables were working. Whenever I try to run something, I get that error. If I try and go into Control Panel, it tells me "A short cut cannot be created here." If I go into My Computer, nothing shows up. I cant get into the regedit, msconfig, command prompt. I need help.

Whenever I try to open a file with a different program to what it is set to it comes up with a new window saying 'This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel.'

For example, rather than opening an .flv file with VLC, ( I want it to open with Windows Media Player) I right click and go down to 'open With' - Choose default program...

and then the window comes up. It used to work fine but not anymore. Any ideas on how to fix it?

(Create an association in the Set Association control Panel)

Hey, I recently had Vista Guardian on my computer and manually deleted the files for it in regedit. However, i think i might have deleted something else as well, because now i cant open any programs on my laptop. My computer says that this file needs an associated program for it to work. I've read a couple of threads stating to go into RUN then type Command.exe but it still wont let me do this. I then tried Command.com and it worked, but when i type regedit.exe regedit.cm it still comes up with that popup.

i think i know what to do because i read a guys post who was having simliar problems

But i can't get into my regedit, any ideas?

(i Also cant do system restore as i have no restore points)

Hello, all of the sudden I can't open any .exe files, meaning internet, itunes, ect. Each time I click on one, this is the message that pops up, "This file does not have a program associated with it for preforming this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel." Someone else on here has already posted the same problem, and an answer has been given, but the first thing it requires you to do is open up the command prompt, which I cannot do, because I still get the same pop up even for trying to run the cmd. If there is any way to fix this, I would be EXTREMELY grateful.

A:This file does not have a program associated with it for preforming this action. Cre

This is normally caused by a malware infection. Unfortunately it's hard to run any programs when you can't get anything to run.

If you have another PC you can use, download the zip file from the site below, unzip it and copy it to the Windows desktop of the machine with the exe problem. It would be best to do this in Windows safe mode.

1. the assocation
Suggest you try this:
From the control panel
(E.g. via Windows key + X, click Control Panel, then Default Programs).

2. Sthg that is accessing a file repeatedly, whose type is not associated.
You might be able to work out what that is using a clean boot:

Hello everyone,
i've seen the old thread about the problem with same title, but in my case its not the exefiles i'cant open but its rather my local disc D and my local disk E.
i dont have any difficulties in opening local disk C where my windows is installed. I tried opening local disk D and E by typing D: or E: in adress bar and it works just fine, but i cant open them by doubleclicking.

p.s.
i took my Hard Disk to my friend to copy Starcraft II cache files from his Hard disk, so i suppose i might gave cought up some viruses and im runnig a full scan right now.

Antivirus found 3-4 trojan files when i turned my PC on and cleaned them.
Do you think that my problem is related to the virus and the antivirus should fix it, or is it other matter?
thank you.

here what should i do for this one for example? :|

This is a totally new one to me folks. I have had IE10 in and running for several months on Windows 7 Home Prem x64 on Thinkpad x120E. I typically use either Chrome or FF19. today I thought I would try a bothersome government website with IE10 and discovered the icon is gone - changed to that generic square thing "missing". went to the programs folder in Control Panel and there is no Internet Explorer entry. Checked Program Files x86 and there is the folder, and the exe file etc. tried to run the iexplore.exe and it fails, leaves no error message in windows event log. downloaded the IE10 install package from MS and it bails saying there is a later version already installed.

along with the cratered IE10, firefox "Nightly" x64 suffered similar fate, and Ccleaner [also a x64 version] the same.

any clues? I'm dazzled.... have not a clue what happened. system is otherwise stable, no issues except I DID notice that in Windows Update list it offered up "Internet Explorer 9" for me to install..... a tad disconcerting.

pls give me some news!

A:IE10 Missing in Action: will not run, not in program list. ??? no clue

problems from within (e.g. chkdsk)
problems from without (e.g. infections)

...but let's start by looking for IE10 in the 64bit folder (...\Program Files\) not the x86 one.

There should not be an IE entry in the Programs and Features listing.
Normally one could go to Start
...type view installed updates in the Search programs and files field
...click on the resulting link
...and look around in there for IE9 or IE10
but since Windows update is offering you IE9, you might not find any IE entries in the list of updates.

Hello Bleeping Computer Community!

I have my netbook for a almost two years and this is the first time I've gotten trojans and all these extra popups. I've tried using Malwarebyte and IObit Security to clean some. Yesterday I had a bunch of popup from a antivirus action program that kept telling me my system has been infected with a trojan and it wouldn't allow me to open any programs or documents! So what I did was did a system restore which stop this action program. I don't see it anymore, but I wouldn't but too sure on that.

I've also been getting a subsystem spooler apps error saying it had encounter a problem and needs to be close. I can't print anymore. I think this is also because of any trojans I might have had.

I believe I've been getting these trojans because I started to download songs from mediashare and all other likewise site. This I will never do again.

Please guide me in helping me go back to the way it was before. Thank you in advance!

My Windows 8.1 action center behavior of the anti-virus protection with message saying-"turned off", while the-
(task manager)-processes has the anti-virus program "seen". The (task manager)-startup has the anti-virus program "enabled" & (task manager)-details has the anti-virus program "running".
Question: Is it ("normal") for the Windows 8.1 action center to have the anti-virus currently not monitored and "turned off"?
I can't turn it on, while seeing a mini page to do so at action center.
Will the problem be a "prelude" to (refresh) or (reinstall) the operating system, because of "malfunction" of the action center-
and the anti-virus program together?, or is Windows Defender the choice for action center protection?
Note: Windows Defender did "turn on"as a (second choice protection), as  my anti-virus subscription
wouldn't turn "on". WebrootSecureAnywhere is the anti-virus subscription.

I get this window now when I sync my PDA with Windows Mobile Device Center in Win7 64bit:
There is no email program associated to perform the requested action. Please install an email program or, if one is already installed,

When I first stared syncing, everything was fine... this is a very recent install. It synced fine before I installed Office 2007, including Outlook. After I installed Office it
synced fine too, but then I realized that I could sync with Google and decided that I didn't need Outlook at all on my system... I just used it for syncing and backing up my
Contacts anyway. After I uninstalled Outlook, I started getting this pop up whenever I put my PDA into its cradle... even though I have all email and contact syncing turned off locally...
Google is used as a fake Exchange server and it syncs fine that way... after reading some forums, I installed Live Mail onto my system, hoping that having an
email program installed would make it self default, but alas that is not the case. Everything in the Control Panel Default programs seems to be ok, and Live Mail is
my default email program... what else am I missing here? Thank you!

So, I got the Win 7 Antivirus Malware about a month ago, and it messed my computer up. I tried cleaning the registry, and this and that, to no avail, and finally decided to buy Malwarebytes, and fix it, since it seems to be the most popular option. Well, I did, and it seems to have cleared the virus itself, but unfortunately, it left me with all the cleanup of the destruction of my laptop. While the virus was active, it wouldn't let me open programs at all. After I cleared the virus, I STILL couldn't open programs, BUT I found that if I right clicked and "run[ran] as administrator", it would open the program no problem.
Well, I've been doing this ever since, and 90% of my computer usage is restored. EXCEPT for Windows 7 pages with hyperlinks. For example. I CANNOT change my screensaver, because the button to change it is a hyperlink, and as soon as I try to click on it, it sends me right to back to square one "This file does not have a program...".
Ok, so, I tried looking online for a fix. I found one for an old thread on this website that seemed to work for everyone who did it. So, I tried, BUT, here's the twist:
I can open the Regedit through my trick of right click - "run as administrator". BUT, when I go to the destination (HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ exefile \ shell \ open \ command.) to change the value to "%1" %*

This is the error I get every time I click on the magnifier icon of Windows Search 4.0 in attempts to use it. The standard search feature built into windows is also inoperable in that it only displays a grayed out pane on the left hand side when in folders view.

A contributing factor should be noted -- A month ago I had to perform an "XP Repair" due to a BSOD STOP Error (most likely an IDE controller driver).

As per research I have checked the registry for the following:

Quote:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ exefile \ shell \ open \ command.
Double-click the (Default) value in the right hand pane and delete the current value data, and then type:
"%1" %* exactly as shown including the quotes and asterisk.
Navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe
In the right-hand pane, set (default) to exefile

I've also employed sfc /scannow, while I see no positive results I am also unsure if it accomplished anything as the WindiwsUpdate log file looks ambiguous to me.

Any insight would be appreciated.

I recently got a virus from a random popup when I was searching for some recipes on the internet. Immediately my browser exited out and a program called "Antivirus Vista" popped up. It started scanning my computer and kept provoking that there was malware on my computer (which there wasn't). My main antivirus system is Windows Live OneCare. It finished the scan, claiming I had 30 viruses on my computer (which I didn't).

I already knew this was a fake, so I canceled everything, but the little 'balloons' that popup through the toolbar kept saying the my firewall was off (which it wasn't). I immediately took action. I deactivated my network connection, and started up Malwarebyte's. It found 3 viruses (the ones that caused the fraud antivirus) and it removed it. I then ran OneCare to ensure that there wasn't anymore viruses, and there wasn't.

But now, every program that I try to run comes up with this error:

"This file does not have a program associated with it for preforming this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel."

I couldn't find the 'set associations' in the control panel.

The virus affected everything but Internet Explorer (thank God). Even command prompt!

What should I do? I can't do anything until this is fixed.

Thanks,
Alex.

Easiest would be to go back to a prior restore point. Even when the virus is removed, the damage is not.

There's a fair ammount of choice out there so i was wondering if anyone has any recomendations?

Good evening..i have just completed the combofix scan on my Openlabs Neko TSE. Which is my music workstation with a built in computer. Please can you review my log for further advice.? I really appreciate you for this. This workstation is the key to all my productions. I have been freaking out all night. Aloha!

A:completed combofix run

Hello,That request about NOT posting CF logs is primarily to keep people from running the program unsupervised. Please read this topic: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/273628/combofix-usage-questions-help-look-here/ which explains that reasoning further. Please follow the instructions in ==>This Guide<== starting at step 6.Once the proper logs are created, then make a NEW TOPIC and post it ==>HERE<== Since you have run ComboFix, please include the ComboFix log in the new topic. If you cannot produce any of the other logs, then please create the new topic anyway, include the information that you were unable to produce the other logs and why and include the ComboFix log along with a description of your computer issues.Orange Blossom

Hi,

Having successfully performed a 3 hour chkdsk by means of a downloaded microsoft program which did this automatically, the screen is left hanging and there is no option available to exit from it. I tried switching off and then on again but this just puts me back to the start of the chdsk routine which then completes again. So I'm stuck in a loop from which I can't escape !! What do you recommend ?

A:After chkdsk has completed

Hello ,

here is a shot in the dark

turn your system on & then back off

then un plug your system

them push your power button as if you wanted to start it and hold it for a count of 10

this will clear the compleat system of power and maybe reset way your system starts / you may want to reset the bios also by crossing the bios jumpers or just pulling the litheum battery from your mother board for at least 3 minutes

then try your system

you may be looking at wipeing the driver & reinstalling

have you tried to get into the recovery console useing the Windows XP cd ?

Finally got my gaming rig built and in perfect working order. Took me a while figure out how to put my two HDD into raid 0. One of the tech support guys at EVGA helped me out and said that HDDs have a hard time going into raid array if they have never been used, which was the case. I just installed some stuff on my two HDDs and reformatted the partition and BOOM it stopped giving me errors, LOL. Anywho here is the finished build:

Cooler Master Cosmos 1000 Silent Gaming Tower
EVGA 750i FTW Motherboard
Intel E8400 Wolfdale Processor
Xigmatek HDT-D1284 120mm Rifle CPU Cooler
MX-2 Thermal Compound

2xEVGA 8800GTS in SLI
3xSeagate 7200.11 (2 in Raid 0, 1 backup)
Corsair 750TX Power Supply
Samsung DVD-RW w/ Lightscribe SATA
Liteon DVD-RW IDE
4 Scythe KAZE 120mm case fans (1 intake, 3 exhaust)
1 Stock Exaust Fan on HDDs

When I looked at the Case for the first time I couldn't believe how big it was, plenty of room to work in. The Scythe fans sound like a tornado when I first turn on the computer but it gets quite once the bios and PSU start regulating them and you can't notice it when playing games or listening to music. I bought a generic filter for the intake fan and realized that it wasn't needed because the case already comes with filters that you just slide off and wash.

This was my first build ever and I must say I'm quite pleased with the results. The bios defaulted the memory at 800mhz 1.9v so I bump... Read more

A:Completed 2/5 steps - please look over this and tell me what to do

Hello

I needed you to go all the way through the steps. We prefer a more comprehensive set of logs to assist in detecting any malware that may be present. As noted in the final step (Step 5) of our sticky topic (Updated!) IMPORTANT - Read This Before Posting A Log, download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop.

What DSS will do:create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.
clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, and Internet Cache Files, and also empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.
check some important areas of your system and produce a report for your analyst to review.
DSS automatically runs HijackThis for you, but it will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have HijackThis installed.

Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.Close all applications and windows.
Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt <-this one will be minimized
Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt in your next reply.
Please attach extra.txt to your post.
To attach a file to a new post, simplyClick the[Manage Attachments] button under Additional Options > Attach Files on the post composition page, and
copy and paste the following into the "Upload File from your Computer"... Read more

Hi and welcome to TSF.

My name is Iain and I will be helping you clean your system.

You may wish to Subscribe to this thread (Thread Tools > Subscribe to this thread) so that you are notified when you receive a reply.

Please read these instructions carefully and then print out or copy this page to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out the fix. You should not have any open browsers or live internet connections when you are following the procedures below.

Note that the fix may take several posts. Please continue to respond to my instructions until I confirm that your logs are clean. Remember that although your symptoms may vanish, this does NOT mean that your system is clean.

Please ensure that you follow the instructions in the order I have them listed.

I had a problem with my yoga 700 11". The laptop freezes every so often (3-6 hours). At first I thought it's the drivers that need to be updated, then Windows 10 updates, then BIOS update.I tried all of that but the problem still persisted. I did the recovery reset but still the same... I created Linux system on USB flash drive and booted the laptop with it. Even under Linux the laptop was freezing.I contacted lenovo support team and they said the laptop needs to be repaired and they send me the return free postage vocher. I put my laptop in the original box and posted it as I was instructed (for some reason it was send to Germany). The company name that issued me with the postage slip was MEDION AG - A Lenovo CompanyAfter 13 days I got an email saying:"...After assessing your device, the repair center has deemed that a repair cannot be completed under the manufacturer?s warranty due the case of the device showing signs of inappropriate treatment. ..." There were two pdf documents attached to the email. one with the detailed photos of the damage ( see photo attached) and the other one, the cost estimate document. In the document I was given two options:1. accept the cost of repair (£54.65)2. not accept and the laptop would be return to me (I would be still charged fat price of £44.07)My reply was that I do not recall the laptop having this damage and I always looked after it. Dear Broni and All,

I have completed all steps, and ran the security programmes recommended in this thread:

http://www.techspot.com/community/topics/keep-getting-stupid-shopping-malware-installed.208648/

However, I am still getting pop-ups and adware related problems, which means that the underlying problem has not been resolved.
These are the programmes that I have run (today, 18/05/2015):
-RogueKiller
-Mbar
-AdwCleaner (it removed NickelBlock, AllCheeiaPPPriCe, DowwnSaave, SaVieNeewaApupoz)
-Junkware Remover
-Farbar Recovery Tool
-Farbar Security Scanner
-Security Check
-Tempfile Cleaner

I am currently running Sophos.
My laptop runs Windows 8.1, and Combofix does not support it.
The antivirus that I have is Kaspersky (I previously had Microsoft Security Essential), and Windows Defender. The malware was not detected by a Kaspersky and Spybot full scan a few days ago. However, on the 26th of April, I manually uninstalled some adware, and then ran full scans, which showed nothing.

As you can imagine, I don't think I have many options left, and formatting my laptop is a dreadful prospect. I was wondering if you could give me some advice.
I have kept all logs of the security programmes that I've run.

Thank you in advance, and looking forward to hearing from you.

Hello and thank you for any help you may be able to give. I've gone through the five required steps before posting my logs for help.

I've run Spybot, Adaware and SuperAntiSpyware and can't seem to clear up whatever the issue is.

Following are the required log files (as well as the "extra" text file attached):

Not sure if this is the correct forum to post this in but..

Have installed Windows 8 64bit on three computers, all similar spec (amd a8 processors and gigabyte f2 motherboards with 8gig ram.)

Windows seems to be ok in every other respect other than I am getting an error in the metro store. When trying to install any app I get the error:

I have searched the internet for this error, and although I can find similar errors, I can see no one else having the error code with the same scrambled type.

We got around the error by signing in to a microsoft account, but then we are unable to create a pin for said account (the cursor just spins).

This happens on all three computers.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Have you tried copying & pasting the error code in Google ?

I find that helps.

EDIT--

I Googled & found nothing.

Perhaps this phone number will help.
I've used it & got good help from Microsoft.

I apologize if this forum is meant for tech people as I'm a novice computer user, but I really need help.  I have Windows 7 x64 and I used RoboCopy for the first time, and have messed up royally.  I was trying to copy folders and files from my
computer to an external hard drive.  My external hard drive had important files and folders on it already, and I thought that copying more data using RoboCopy would just add to it, but it deleted everything that was on the external hard drive when it
copied the additional data.
Can I undo what just happened?  Is there any way to revert?  Or maybe there's some way to recover that deleted data?
I used:  Robocopy C:\Users\Name\Documents F:/MIR /dcopy:T
I would be really grateful to be helped.  Thanks in advance.
