Loading Older Dell OS To Newer Dell Computer

Q: Loading Older Dell OS To Newer Dell Computer

Was given a Dell Optiplex 360 that I found out after getting a nasty virus had a bootleg XP OS
I also did not have any disks with it. I had older disks for a Dell 4600 that I used to wipeout the hard drive and install the new OS. Everything works fine except that I can not load any of the drivers from the second disk, (it was a 3 disk series)
thus at least at this point not able to connect with my cable internet. Cable people told me I needed the drivers.Any suggestions or can it just not be done.
Thanks, Al

A: Loading Older Dell OS To Newer Dell Computer

You will have to go to the dell website look under support and then drivers and downloads for your model of computer. If you use the service tag number on the computer it will make sure you get the correct ones you need. For future reference so you wont have this hassle again burn all of the drivers to a cd so you will be all set the next time.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop.  Recently, I bought a Dell Ultrasharp monitor U2412M to attach to my laptop to have an ergonomic home office.   My knowledge of computers/hardware is pretty... rudimentary.
24"1920 x 1200Nice adjustable stand1x DVI-D port, 1x display port, 1x VGA port, 1x USB 2.0 upstream port, 4x USB downstream ports
I use my computer for writing documents, internet surfing, and rarely for watching tv.  Eventually, I will buy a lighter and newer laptop, but probably not for a year or two.
I think I bought the wrong monitor....  I was hoping to buy something to use now, that will last, and that will work with any future laptop I buy.
My monitor just arrived.  I connected it to my laptop with the VGA cable (my laptop doesn't have DPI or HDMI input).  It worked, but the picture didn't look.... very good.
It is my understanding that VGA connections are the worst quality.  Can I use an ?adapter to connect to the VGA cable to access the DVI-D port on the monitor?  Or is this the best I can get?  I'm not even sure what ?video cards are, or whether I need one of these.
I also looked up the specs on my old laptop and it says the specs of my laptop screen are
1366 x 768 pixel
So is this the limit of what an attached monitor can be?

Any input appreciated.  Thanks.

Hello all, I'm newer to RAM and things like that and wanted to know before I buy if these sticks of ram will run in my Dell DImension 4700. I was hoping someone knew the specs of the stock motherboard and such because I have no idea what it is. THanks

A:Older Dell computer

Follow the instructions here so we can help you better:

Are you lookng to add RAM or just replace it?

According to google, the Dell Dimension 4700 has DDR2 RAM at 400 MHz. Both links you posted have DDR2 RAM at faster speeds, so while you can add both of them, I believe, they'll still run at the slower speed unless you take out the older RAM.

Hey all,
I just finally got around to upgrading my 8 yr old Dell B130 Laptop to running Windows 7.
The monitor only displays at 1024x768(max) and is stretched left-right. I'd like to find a driver that would
correct this stretching issue as well as offer some higher resolutions that I once had.

I installed the Intel tool to check and find updates for a Win7 driver but none were found.
I downloaded a Vista driver for the Monitor, but this did not want to install.

Hey, im having some issues. I have a DELL inspiron 5100 laptop and i just recently removed a virus that almost destroyed my hard drive, I got it to work fine but after a few days of use it started to freeze up on the DELL loading screen on the start up, i accidently pressed the F12 key and it took me to a screen with different ways to start up XP, like through the Hard drive or a disk.
i selected to run offthe hard drive and it froze up any help?

A:[SOLVED] Dell inspiron 1500 laptop freezes after DELL loading screen

hi, after you hit F12 did you see the diagnostics program at all? Ordinarily I would say It may be worthwhile running a scan on the hard drive if you can. But, I see you removed a virus, can you tell me if it was with the help of the antimalware section on this forum? or did you just remove it yourself? I need to know if you are absolutely sure you removed all traces of the virus - if you had the help of a forum they would have given you the "all clear". Have you tried starting in safe mode at all?

It freezes and I'm unable to press any buttons (F2, F12 etc) I put it a different hard drive to see if that was the problem but it still continued. HELP PLEASE??

Hi Mattmazz
Thanks for writing to us.
Please disconnect all the connectors and then hold down the power button for 15 secs, now remove the memory modules and put them back one by one and observe for any changes.
If possible please try another set of memory modules. If there is a separate graphics card, remove that as well and try the onboard.

Well...think it will work? It's a Pentium 3 Coppermine, 550MHz stock, overclocked a little to 563MHz. The motherboard is a little older, I'm not sure what it is because it's getting a new hard drive installed right now. It's running XP Home edition, SP1 and just for the record, the Mobo wouldn't support the new 120 gig hard drive so my cousin who is doing the installation had to order PCI Cards or something like that. The video card it has right now is a crappy ol' 8mb one that won't play my videos very well, and I can't play any good online games. Would a better vid card solve this?

The ones I'm looking at are here-
or maybe a 64mb card...not sure yet. What do you think? Thanks!

Oh, and I'm asking this mainly because my friend has a P2 computer thats older than mine, but he can play that Robot Rage game on miniclip...I can't. I was thinking he had a better video card?

When the PC starts up, the dell loading screen begins. Normally this takes around a few seconds but this time it didn't end. We've tried all the diagnostic tests and they all came back fine. Also tried disconnecting all external cables (ie headphones, ethernet etc). Powered on and off multiple times and no change.
By the way, I don't know if this is related or not, but last night before the issue occurred, I was randomly logged out. Once it logged me back in, everything was closed and there was a small square of like TV static towards the bottom right corner. I restarted and it fixed the issue there but I don't know.
Thanks in advance, Sean

So, I've been trying to fix my computer for... 2 weeks.

And basically gotten nowhere, so I turned to this and hopefully learn something new and fix my problem.

So I have an older model computer, Pentium 4 Hyper Threaded. (This computer has no more than an AGP bus)
Don't have enough money to upgrade so I'm going to ignore anything about "WHY DONT YOU BUY A NEW COMPUTER", I simply can't right now.

The stock video card for this computer was an nVidia but now I got it with a ATI Radeon HD 4650 AGP, and lost the disk that goes with the Video card.
My OS is Windows Media Center 2004, and can't seem to download the simple Catalyst from AMD, but it won't download, the install goes through then says it can't go any further, and stops immediately.

I have Microsoft .NET Framework, I'm sure.
Yet it still doesn't work, and I don't know what to do really, I've been to and that was the Manufacture for the video card but they didn't really have anything so I'm not sure what to do.

I tried putting on the hotfix on my computer before I reformated for the 2nd time, but it wouldn't even start up normally it would force itself to reset and go to Safe Mode Instead.

My current tower computer a HP a1640n has a fried motherboard due to a power outage. It had Windows 7 34bit edition home. Hard drive inside is still good an usable. I have an old tower unit Sonia Vaio PVC RX752 which has an old IDE hard drive which crashed, and I went out at that time and just bought a new computer. Everything else still works on it but the hard drive. I was hoping to take out the HP hard drive and put it in the VIAO so that i could transfer all the information I had on it to my external USB hard drive. Can I use the new hard drive in the old computer? I realize that my old computer probably won't be Windows 7 Compatable with drivers and such. But all I want it to do is boot up so I can get the information off the hard drive. The new HD in the HP uses a P10 connector which the old computer does not have. It is an IDE hard drive. How would I go about getting the right connectors if I can? If you need pictures I have them of the inside of both computers. I realize that the easier way would be to buy a new computer and just transfer it that way. But right now, don't have the money to buy a new computer. I have files on the hard drive I do need, so I need to get them off now.

A:How do I install a newer hard drive to an older computer?

Now it sounds a touched muddled to me Melissa am I guessing right you just want data from the old drive onto the new build hard drive. If so mate just hook it up via a USB gadget and transfer over what you want.

Something like this one there are versions that have IDE one side and SATA the other and most are externally powered (you get an adaptor for that)

Plenty of choice here on this page too. - usb to sata adaptor

I have a newer dell studio 1537 and lately it has been blue screening. It showed an irq not less or equal 0xa error and would restart. It would then go to its startup repair utility and restore itself back in time some distance. Then it would start and want to get updates and bring itself back to current. Then it would run for a while (maybe a day or so) and go through this all over again. When windows started,I ran Malwarebytes and it found the display properties set to not be changed, otherwise it found no malware or virus's.

I then downloaded and ran the windows debugging tools to analyze the dump file and it said that the problem was probably caused by the ntoskrnl.exe.

How do I repair this? Ntoskrnl seems to be a major windows file. If I reinstall,I feel that this will come back again.

Any help would be appreciated.

A:Newer dell laptop won't start

ntoskrnl.exe is a critical process in the boot-up cycle of your computer although should never appear in WinTasks whilst under normal circumstances Note: ntoskrnl.exe can be altered by the w32.bolzano and variants. If this process appears in WinTasks, please update your virus definitions immediately and do a virus scan.

Also, Download CCleaner from my sig, do a registry scan.

When I go to the Intel site and look for the latest graphics drivers for my chipset, they have a newer one, dated 1/17/07, vs. the one and only update from Dell, 14.10.4609, dated 6/6/06. Of course, I'm thinking newer is better. I downloaded the thing, ran it, okeedokeed the eula, and got this error message:

The driver being installed is not validated for this computer. Please obtain the appropriate driver from the computer's manufacturer. Setup will exit. (see Attachment)

^%#$ Dell, right? Hit OK, right?

Well, I didn't hit OK. It took a while to find the folder, but all those downloaded files are in C:\Documents and Settings\user\Local Settings\Temp\pft2F~tmp. And, as long as you don't click OK on the ERROR window, all the files stay right there. (If you do hit OK, they're gonola, of course.) Soooo, I copied them to a folder and took a look, and then I searched for the same file names in Windows. What do you know? For all but three of the files in the downloaded graphics folder, files with exactly the same names are in C:\WINDOWS\i386, system32, and two backup folders, and they are nowhere else on my HD. Of the three downloaded files with new names, one is called difx32.dll, and the other two are Intel logo bitmaps.

Now, difx32? What might "difx32.dll" do? One might guess from the name that it looks for files on the HD, or in Windows specifically, files with the same names as those in the downloaded graphics folder, but D... Read more

Hi there!
Yesterday i decided i would do a system restore as i was getting the odd pop up which i had never been getting before. I have a relatively new Dell computer. I got it last December. It's a Dimension 9200C - Windows XP.
I went back to a date in May. Anyhow. Now things don't seem to work properly. McAfee just gives me a blank white screen. I decided i would undo my system restore...system restore gives me a blank white screen too! I was reading that sometimes theres a conflict with explorer 7.0 and McAfee so i tried to uninstall Mcafee and it tells me that it can't be uninstalled as there are files missing.
I tried a system restore calendar...I tried to go to msconfig and start system restore there. Again the white screen, I tried Start > right click on My Computer > Properties > System Restore tab and discovered that the "turn off system restore" box was checked!!!!!!!!! I made sure that this was NOT checked all along. Now I'm afraid nothing is going to work properly!

Can anyone offer any suggestions at all! I'm sooo upset. This is a new computer!

A:Solved: Lost System restore and McAfee - newer Dell

Hi you may have to clear all restore points.

Right click My Computer>properties.
Click on system restore tab.
Select Turn off System Restore>click Apply and restart Pc.
This will delete all restore points.

Once restarted..go back to System Restore tab and deselect Turn off System Restore.
Now click Start menu.
Programs>accessories>system tools>System Restore.
Choose the option Create a restore point.
Enter a description.
Click Create.

Try reinstalling McAfee that should reinstall all files.
Let us know how you get on.

I am trying to reformat an older dell dimension 4100
and reinstall XP on it.
Its slow, has alot of junk on it and I want to get it fresh for the school year. Kids use it for word, dictionary, homework searching ect.

It has XP on it now, and service pack 1,2 and 3

If I put in my xp disk, it will tell me the disk is the older xp (before all the service packs) and it cannot install it.
it will get me to the point of seeing what the partitions are ect but I cannot delete or reformat them since the set up files have installed some files.

I want to get to "real" dos and reformat it.
I want to boot to my windows 98 floppy and reformat from there but pressing f12 to change the boot order does not function.

So Im stuck as to what to do.
Is there any other tricks to acess the bios or boot order?

A:Reformatting older Dell

Boot from the XP CD, don't try to install when Windows is already running. You may have to go into Setup/BIOS to change the boot order if F12 won't let you select the CD/DVD-ROM.

Then you can delete/re-create the partitions, and install.

Note that some Dell's that shipped with 2 optical drives will only boot from one of them, usually the top one.

Is it possible to use an older (2002) Dell OEM XP Pro CD which has either service pack 1 or 2 on it and then slipstream SP3 into it, and use it on a non-Dell computer only for repair functions, such as mainly running the system file checker tool, (sfc /scannow) ? The PC I do want to use it with is a 2006 Gateway desktop running XP Media Center Edition 2005, with SP3, which came only with a recovery DVD. This is because when I do try to run the system file checker tool, it says files are needed to be copied to the dll cache, and insert the XP Pro service pack 3 CD disk. This is due to Media Center is based on the XP Pro I believe.

The short version of my question is exactly what the topic says-- Can I install a Dell-provided OEM version of Vista on a non-Dell computer?

But, here's the wordier version giving context, if anyone's interested.

About 10 months ago, I guess, I got a Dell Vostro that came with Windows Vista Home Basic. However, I had no interest in Vista (because I already had a Windows machine) and the very first thing I did was install Ubuntu on it. I still have the Vista reinstall disk, though, which, to my memory, hasn't been used.

Now I'm planning on getting a barebones system and upgrading what I see fit. For the time being, I'm going to use the Windows 7 RC, but I'd like to get the uber-great upgrade deal that they're having to pre-order either the Business or Home Premium version upgrade. So, to do that, I'd need an XP installation or a Vista installation. Is there any reason, legal or software-related, that I wouldn't be able to install Vista using that disk that came with the Vostro?

I heard somewhere that sometimes if you try, it'll say something like "This is not a Dell computer, you evil, evil person" and refuse to install, so I wanted to make sure before I pre-ordered the upgrade. I don't want to get the upgrade and have nothing to upgrade, of course.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1520 laptop with Windows Vista OS. I have a Dell 926 printer interfaced to it via USB. Printer driver is installed and the printer does communicate at times with the computer and does a good job printing. However, intermittently when trying to print a document I'll get a message on the computer that says that communication has been lost and print job failed.

I've checked all connections to make sure they are solid and no debris that might cause this.
That has not corrected the problem.
The other thing that happens is that the document I want to print will stay in the print queue/spooler and if I shut the computer and printer down and restart both it will print the job. And it may continue to print jobs but it's just a matter of time.

Needless to say this is frustrating. I can print several jobs in a row with no problem and then I'll get this "communication has been lost between printer and computer". And I have to go thru the procedure above to get the last job printed.

My wife doesn't understand how this works and will try to print the same job several times with the commo problem and then complains when it won't print.....and then they all print when the above procedure is followed.

Any ideas what is going on??? Any fixes??

New to this board but it seemed like a good place to start. I have a older computer that was really outdated so I bought a new Compaq but my question is...the older one had a floppy drive in it and the new one does not. I need to have a floppy drive as I have a sewing machine that reads only floppys. Can I take the drive out of the old computer and install it in the new one?

Also I have a Dell that my kids use and it seems to need more RAM...can I take the ram out of the old and install it into the new? I am not a really techy person but can do things if I am told how.

Thanks for the help!!

A:can I "recycle" parts from an older computer into a newer one?

The floppy can almost certainly be moved*, but the RAM is unlikely to be reusable, at all - RAM technology has moved on so far that even a 5 year old machine is likely to be 3 to 4 generations behind.

*I think Dell still have a floppy controller onboard, not 100% sure but I haven't heard otherwise

Our main computer is in the shop having the chipset fan fixed. The kids have been complaining that our old computer that they use for their ipods and general internet use was really slow. So with extra time on my hands I have been playing with it. They were not kidding, this beast does not MOVE, freezes, etc. I deleted quite a few old games, downloaded and ran Malwarebytes, ashampoo win optimizer, tuneup utilities, and uni blue from this site. defraged through tunup utilities and ashampoo, loaded microsoft IE 8 (was running 7, I think)

Am running windows xp home 2002 Service pack 2 on dell desktop

Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated. I am ready to toss this puppy!

Have you removed anything that really is not essential, as programs go? Such as toolbars?

I would uninstall each of those programs, using Add/Remove Programs...then check system performance.

I further suggest that you remove the HJT log data from your original post (edit it) because leaving it posted will result in this being treated as a malware problem/situation...which may be inaccurate.

/forcebios is the key command in DOS! If you have been struggling to restore your BIOS to an earlier version you will immediately realize how important this little command is.
You will need to use it after the .exe, after the c: prompt in DOS to revert to an older BIOS. It will look something like this when you enter it (the 530_1016.exe is the name of the 1.0.16 BIOS I found through Google):
And this allows you to return to the older BIOS after you have created a Boot USB, placed the BIOS .exe on the USB, inserted the USB and booted using F12.
I love old Dell desktop PCs! Especially the Vostro 200, but an Inspiron 530 recently gave me a real headache.
The most recent BIOS for the Inspiron 530 (BIOS 1.0.18) has all sorts of bugs.. not least that it will forget BIOS/CMOS settings (giving CMOS checksum error) and will need to have the time and date and boot order reset if someone switches off the mains.
The only fix for me, having renewed the CMOS battery and  wiped the CMOS using the jumper (to no avail) was to restore an earlier BIOS (I chose 1.0.16).
Having created the Boot USB (following links on Google) and having put the old BIOS 1.0.16 on the USB and pressed F12 at startup I ran the old BIOS. But the DOS message I got was:
New bios version is low! ALL files removed!
This meant that I was trying to load an older BIOS and it wasn't going to allow me to do that.
After spending hours scanning the web I found an old, long closed, thread ... Read more

We have a bad hard drive on an older (april 2002) Dell Dimension 4400 running Windows XP Pro. The old hard drive is a Seagate Snowmass 40G, half height, 7.2K, 40G/P (?), ATA drive. All of this information comes from the Dell website and our old invoice. We'd like to replace the drive but don't know how to tell if it is an Ultra ATA, PATA or ohter type of hard drive. We found one that sounds like it might be compatible at newegg but we don't know enough to figure out if it is compatible.

Can anyone help us?

I want to slap a couple pieces into a Dell Optiplex 745 desktop model to make it a bit more functional. Since it has no memory card reader and I've taken out the floppy drive, I wanted to use that floppy bay to put in a multi-card reader. How do I determine what will fit and work with the motherboard? I've seen a certain internal connector on many such readers which I don't think this motherboard can take.

Second, I want to swap out the DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive it has with a full DVD-RW drive. I know Dell PCs tend to lean towards proprietary parts though, does that extend to the optical drives? My eye is on the same brand Asus drive I put in my Gateway earlier this year which I've been very pleased with. For the record, this Dell takes SATA type drives so my guess is any modern SATA optical DVD drive should work, but I don't want to get burned on Dell's proprietary parts needs if it affects the optical drive too.

A:ungrading an older Dell- DVD-ROM and card reader

You could buy an external card reader with USB connector and you'll have no problems.

With the DVD/RW swap, you shouldn't have any problem, as well. Just make sure the jumpers match. If the old one is set to Master, the new one should be the same. The ribbon will be printed with the words Master and slave.

Hi all

I had a bad stick of RAM causing BSOD's on my Dell Dimension 8400. (8MZQT51) I removed the offending componant and the computer is working fine now. Since I have to replace it, I figured I would upgrade at the same time. It had 1GB DDR2 RAM, in the form of 2 sticks of 512 mb, 533mHz PC2 4200, 240 pin memory. The motherboard has 4 dimm slots, it has a 3.0 g pentium 4 processor, and running a 32 bit system. Based on my research, I should be able to upgrade to 4GB max RAM, based on what I read on Dell's site for my computer.

Here is my question...will any 4 sticks of the same style 1GB, 240 pin RAM work, or do I need to concern myself with things like mHz, etc?

I have a Dell Inspiron 530, XP PRO, SP3, about a year and a half old. Almost since I first got it, every few months or so, when I boot up it hangs on the Dell screen. When I turn it off and reboot, it is fine. I use Rebit to back up everything on an ongoing basis and have an extended warranty from Dell. Is there anything I can do about this, or should do? Not sure if this is in the right category or not but here goes. The computer has been working fine until about 1/2 hour ago. The monitor goes VERY dim like in hibernation but will not 'relight'. If you reboot it comes on and works properly for about 5 minutes then goes dim again. The only way to get it back is to reboot. needless to say, this is a pretty useless way to have a computer. I appreciate your help.

I just received a Dell Dimension 2400 desktop for free and figured I can just get it back to nothing on it by formatting it and giving it to a friend. I have a windows XP Home OS install disc that I downloaded not too long ago, I used the very same install OS cd on a dell laptop and windows XP installed perfectly fine, and I went to Dell's website and downloaded all the drivers. Now with this Desktop, I put in the OS install CD, booted to the CD, of course the windows XP install screen came up. I deleted the old partition, created a new one, and began to install windows on it. The computer restarted and went into the installation screen. However, it freezes at 39minutes and then after about 15 min an error screen pops up. I just used the disc recently and can't figure out why it is stopping at that 39min screen?

So the next thing I tried was this: I also have an older OS upgrade cd of Windows XP home. I popped that in the drive and tried to install that way and it went perfectly fine. After windows xp loaded up, i went to download the drivers from Dell and that worked. But when I try to get the service packs from microsoft, it won't let me install them and an error comes up. Now why would those error messages come up? When i turned on automatic updates, the computer would not retrieve the updates from microsoft. I had to go to the site and do it manually, but I got an error message not allowing me to install the microsoft service packs (i tried service pack 1 a... Read more

Most Dell desktop systems have a jumper on the mainboard that clears the password (power off, remove jumper, power on, power off and replace the jumper).   On just about every Dell made in the last 15+ years it's the only jumper on the mainboard -  if you need more information, we'll need to know what model system you have.

Hi, I am having a problem with an older Dell running XP. The owner of the computer bought Ascentive Proscan and installed it, and there is a toolbar in the add/remove programs that I can't get rid of. I uninstalled Ascentive, as well as Symantec and Norton, and already removed around 20 threats using Malwarebytes in safe mode as Administrator. I ran the latest version of Spybot, and it removed win32.banker.fgv, and BPS Performance Center malware. I also ran CCleaner. I rebooted and ran both Spybot and Malwarebytes and its coming up with nothing, but when I log in one of the owner accounts and try to run either Spybot or Malwarebytes, it can't even make it through the scan before the computer freezes and has to be unplugged. Here is the Hijackthis log.. any help would be appreciated.

I like to use two monitors which seems to be causing an issue with my new Dell XPS 8900. I got the new computer and monitor three days ago and came with a Nvidia gtx 745 video card. I hooked up the new 2316H monitor via hdmi and the older 2001fp via DVI-D. The older 2001fp seems to have lost the brightness and contrast selection from its menu. Since win 10 only sees it as a PnP monitor I assumed I needed to install the driver to gain access to a full menu.

While it was a cinch to find the driver online and download it win 10 refuses to install it. I tried the usual suspects i.e. device manager and the old control panel hardware settings, but neither succeeded. Window assures me they have the right driver installed (which absolutely cracks me up). I'm certain I am missing the obvious fix here, but it has been quite awhile since I played around installing drivers (remember 95B, I do) much less with a brand new OS.

Running Vista home premium

So I was given an unopened Maxtor Ultra 200GB Ultra ATA/133 HD.
My MB only has SATA connections so I bought a PCI mini card that had a ATA connector for this older HD's ribbon band (and a few extra SATA's as well)

I physically installed the drive, power cable, ATA ribbon and turned the PC on.
My first issue was Vista wont run the CD that came with it. It says it only runs on 2000/xp...etc.

When I am viewing the newly installed ATA HD in computer management>storage>disk management, it shows the Maxtor drive, but says it only has 252 MB.

I know there is something I havent done but I cant find it anywhere. I cant run the CD, so what can I do?

A:irregular BSOD on older Dell Laptop. error 0x0000009f and 0x0000001a

Hello timsparks, Welcome to SF

First off if your OCing in anyway stop, return everything to stock settings for the purposes of testing

If you havent already, fill in your system specs so we know what we are dealing with
System Info - See Your System Specs

Make sure you have read the guide on asking for help with BSOD so you know what we need
And if necessary set your machine to create minidumps (Method 2 Step 2 is easiest IMO)
Dump Files - Configure Windows to Create on BSOD

Run some scans to check against virus or infection
Anti-rootkit utility TDSSKiller
Windows Defender Offline

Run some basic hardware tests
RAM - Test with Memtest86+
Disk Check (windows based check)
Hard Drive Diagnostic Procedure (bootable disk check)

Nothing conclusive in the dump files i would start with the virus checks and some hardware tests see how you get on
What is the keytweak program you have installed ?

You cant get your computer to boot properly because build 7000 is beta and has timed out. It started doing that abt 5 days ago, right? Anyway, You can upgrade but you are going to import all of the problems from the old sydtem to the new one. Microsoft, and most of the ppl here strongly suggest doing a clean install. Yes its a pain, but it will save you having to re-install every time your old system problems crop up

If you are only talking about the fonts (not formatting, styles, etc) you just need to make sure your older pc has the same fonts installed. So if you use Times New Roman, you need to be sure that exact font is on the desktop pc. Otherwise your desktop substitutes with a font it thinks is a reasonable substitute.

Greetings! I enjoy an odd variety of games ranging from different years. Issue being that some games where not programmed for todays operating systems. I recently updated one of my Towers to windows 10 and have no issues with current software but older software has issues. Specifically some games. Currently ive acquired a new system thats running windows 7 Pro (i dont want to loose the license by upgrading to 10). Anyways its a peppy little machine so horsepower for these games is not an issue: its a Dell Percision T5400 that has 2 Xeon E5450 CPU's, currently only 4GB of FB-Dimm DDR2 RAm, a AMD HD 5770 1GB and for hard drives 80GB boot plus 160Gb slave. The failed updates don't appear on the list of updates that windows update presents when it checks for updates.

Should I install the failed updates? Will an older one rewrite or reverse a more recent fix? Do I need to read each KB article since the failures to see if a newer update replaced the failed ones?

A:What to do with older failed updates after newer ones installed?

Hello Ellen,

Often they will be downloaded and installed successfully later. The update history is basically just a log file, so even though the updates were eventually installed, the failed installs will still be listed.

You should install at least all critical and important updates.

If you like, you could use OPTION ONE in the tutorial below to reset and clear update history.

Hi all,

I have an older PCI RAID controller card (a 3Ware 9500S-8 from 2004). I have used it with two previous motherboards (and still am) with no problems, but for some reason it doesn't work with newer motherboards.

It's a PCI 2.2-compliant card, and I'm currently running it without any issues on an Intel DG45ID mobo (which is PCI 2.3). But I've tried putting it on a Gigabyte GA-Z68X-UD3-B3 (Z68 Chipset) and an Intel DH67CL (H67 Chipset, also PCI 2.3), and it fails miserably with the same symptoms: In BIOS, one or more drives connected to it will not show up in the config list; in Windows, the controller card appears and disappears every few seconds from the 3ware config software.

It's not a driver issue, because I'm using the same driver in the same install of Windows 7 x64.

Have there been undocumented changes to the PCI spec in the last year or two? It seems unlikely, but I'm totally stumped. Does anyone have any suggestions for other things that could cause this?

I bought a new(er) Dell from their auction site. Its an Optiplex 760 SFF. It came equipped with Windows Vista Business. I saved my older 320 Western Digital from my older computer. It has Windows XP on it. It does work, has been working on a different computer as a SATA to USB drive. The Optiplex had an 80 Seagate SATA.

I did a straight out trade of the drives. Optiplex BIOS does recognize the drive. It won't, however, boot into XP. At this point, the Seagate is completely disconnected.

What do I need to do to make this work?

A:Older Sata drive to replace newer with different OS

You need to do a clean install of Windows XP. You can't just take a drive out of one computer, install into another & expect it to run.

Can anyone suggest a way to get a dell 770 printer to work on a non dell win98 system?

My friend was given the printer from his friends, but it's a dell and it's pretty muh brand new so he doesn't want to throw it away. It's also better than his current printer

Anyway, he uses the dell install disk but once it begins and runs the setup app it gives a message akin to pirating. Saying something like -this computer does not support dell , or something like - this computer is not a dell.

Can anyone offer advice. I did a search on google and dells' site and here.
I couldn't quite find anything that might lead me to an answer..?

Generally speaking, is there a problem connecting newer faster HDDs or optical drives to PC with an older mobo/CPU combo, assuming they are the supported interface type, of course?

What are the important specs to look at to determine if the components will run together suitably?

A:connecting newer drives to older mobo/CPUs

There should not be a problem with optical drives. but newer larger hard drives may not be recognized as the proper size on mobo's with older Bios that Dont support hard drives larger than 37Gb or 137GB.

try updating your video card drivers to the latest version. perhaps there is a patch for said game to run on newer systems, i'd do a bit of googling for that.

I keep reading about older versions of Win7 Ultimate. Meaning the newer ones are different? I am going to purchase Windows 7 Ultimate but is there a difference? I can get a fairly decent price on A site for an older version of Windows 7 Ultimate so is the smarter choice to purchase the newer though more costly versions, or the older versions at the cheaper price. ( at least 75 dollars up to 100 dollars USD difference in prices)?? Thank you for your help.

May the Good Lord keep you always in His loving arms!

A:Newer version vs Older Versions of Windows 7 Ultimate

There is no 'older version' of Windows 7 unless are are referring to the RC, the official RTM build is 6.1.7600

A site for an older version of Windows 7 Ultimate so is the smarter choice to purchase the newer though more costly versions

Beware of these 'sites' as they usually sell blacklisted Technet product keys

I have tried to repair/reinstall/install my Windows XP system with no luck. I asked for help in an earlier thread, and got some helpful advice, but now I have a new problem. (I'm not sure I should be starting a new thread on this; but it does seem like a separate issue to me.)

About two years ago I had the Geek Squad in to rid my computer of a deeply embedded virus. The techie said something to the effect that he was going to load a newer version of XP, which I welcomed, and thought no more about it. Now, in trying to reinstall or install or whatever it is that I'm going to do, the XP disk comes up with an error message saying that I cannot install an earlier version of XP. I don't have a copy of the newer version the techie installed. My question is: is there a way to override the can't-install-older-version block and reinstall the original XP version I have on a legally-owned disk?

Thank you for whatever advice you can give me.

i know these games arent THAT old... as i played them in windows 7 64bit, before i downgraded to XP so i could use XP in parallels... i will say no more about that.

anywAYS... the games are Unreal, and Unreal Tournament. and they run TOO fast, like 150-200% of what they should be running at. if i adjust the game speed, that helps, but then slows it down waaaay too much, until a guy shoots at me, then it immediately speeds up again, im dead, and then it slows. lol. seems like that anyway. here are my specs.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 2.8GHz
Geforce 7900 GS 256MB PCI-E
4GB 800MHz DDR-2
on-board 5.1 hardware surround sound
500GB SATA Western Digital (a Unix-based OS installed, its against forum rules to specify which one)
120GB IDE Maxtor (windows XP)

unreal tournament 2004, and unreal 2 run perfectly, however these older games run TOO fast. i know theres a way to turn off one of the cores of the processor, but i have the unreal anthology. how would i turn off the extra core for the all in one games?

A:question regarding older game titles on newer hardware too fast

I have a huge problem, hope someone can help!

I recently had my computer fried by various power failures. I have the hard drive which seems to be working fine. I have installed it in another computer as a slave. I now want to import my .pst file, but am getting the following error that says my file :

"is not compatible with this version of the pernonal folders information service. Contact your administrator."

The problem seems to be that there is an older version of outlook running on the "new" computer than the one that was running on the old one.

New computer Outlook version : 10.0.2616.0
Old computer Outlook version: 11.0.5510

Can anybody help me with this problem???? I do most of my work from email, so this is a HUGE problem for me. I am running Windows XP Pro

A:Solved: Importing an outlook .pst file from a newer version to an older

Welcome to the forum.

They switched to another file format when they released Outlook 2003. Try using a blank pst to make the account file and then importing items from your old pst file. To Import data you will go to "File">>"Import and Export" from the menu bar and go through the wizard.

Ok, on the older case, it didn't have a 20-pin connector connected to the motherboard, instead it was connected by 2 columns of 6 next to 6, over 6 next 6, something like this

Well on the new Antec case, we connected the 20 pin connector, but the new PSU only has 1 set of 6 by 6 pin connectors
unconnected for the last 6 by 6 vertical down

Why would that be? The computer does not even start up, the motherboard doesn't even light up. I know I will need to bring in some more info first, but that is where I need people to just ask questions first, because this older motherboard is rather confusing.

I read the thread about the guy who's new sager wouldn't load some sites even though his room mate, who was using the same ISP, could. I have a v similar problem. I just bought a new Dell Inspiron 14R and it won't load selected sites (random eg: BBC News, NY Times,, Hotmail) and it won't load search results from Google either.

I've flushed the DNS and checked all settings etc and my internet connection (I'm using wireless) is working just fine - I can get on to Google, perform a search in milliseconds but then, when I click on the results they won't load. Some sites will load but are not functional ie: you can't click through pages etc.

I have with me another Dell laptop; on this laptop, I can access all sites and search results just fine - using the same wireless connection.

I've had an engineer from my ISP at the house and he can't work out why one laptop connects and the other not. I've spent a lot of time on the phone to the Dell support guys, ran diagnostics etc and the laptop is working perfectly, everything configured just right etc.

Any ideas?
