Solved: Windows XP? Custom Supprort? Pay MS $200 a Year.

Q: Solved: Windows XP? Custom Supprort? Pay MS $200 a Year.

This article SEEMS to say that although MS no longer makes patches for Windows XP, (stopped after April 8th, 2014) they have something called Custom Support, where for $200 a year, those who simply cannot update their Windows XP systems due to backwards compatibility issues, could still get Windows XP patches.

How is this possible? Can someone explain what the article means in terms of the Windows XP user?

A: Solved: Windows XP? Custom Supprort? Pay MS $200 a Year.

As the article says, if you are a large company with a Custom Support Agreement Microsoft is required to keep up some support for three more years. And, for XP apparently it's costing those large companies about $200 per PC (per year?). For XP users not in a large company it means nothing.

I built a custom built PC about a year ago, it worked perfect and had no issues. It was used more as a media server and to share documents and backup pictures, so it was always on pretty much. I made sure it was well cooled and it never had any issues.

I reformat it as it seemed to be restarting itself and I thought a reformat and clean up of all the rubbish on it would do it good. Since reformatting it seems to have a BSOD issue, it is completely random too, sometimes its as soon as it starts up and other times it waits a while.

Here's what I have done so far:
-Checked all drivers are up to date and installed correctly
-Checked all components are seated correctly to the motherboard
-Booted in safe mode to see if programs worked in there as read on google to check (they do)

So I read on another forum here someone said to get the Windows mini dump log, I have attached to this could anyone help me out please?

So firstly, i love that there is a forum dedicated to the dreaded BSOD.

Setting the scene: Last night i put my computer on sleep mode for the first time ever whilst i went sleepies- normally i just perform a shut down. Bright lights were flashing in my room so i couldnt get to sleep, so lazy me turns on the computer from sleep mode and just holds the power button down to turn the computer off. Everytime the computer boots, just after the windows logo appears...BSOD everytime.

I did install a new data drive about 2 weeks ago, which could be the root of the problem????

After about 6 hours of research and 4 cups of coffee (I am pretty much a complete noob at this) i found that f4 errors are generally a hardware issue.

Things i have tried:
-System restore to earlier date....basic stuff
-Change sata cables around - even having the boot disk (call it drive1-SSD) in other sata drives and changing settings accordingly in bios (which i hope was the right thing to do) - I only had that boot disk connected. My data HD were disconnected.
-Installing w7 on another hard drive. Works fine. All files appear on the SSD when i reconnected it
-Can't run safe mode at all - BSOD aswell but vanishes in a blink of an eye.
-Ran memory diagnostics - all fine.
-Can't use memtest86 because none of my usb will allow the image to be unpacked for a bootable usb (if that made sense)

And just some thoughts....

I am wondering though if it would make a difference changing the RAM stic... Read more

current vba code is:-
ChDir "C:\00 - savehere \2012"
Range("c57:h102").ExportAsFixedFormat Type:=xlTypePDF, Filename:=composedfn & ".pdf"
Is there a way to save to ChDir "C:\00 - savehere \ currentyear
without having to change the vba integer value to each new year? or using if statements for each year? So when the 1st of jan comes it automatically save to the new current year directory and if possible creates a directory at the start of each new year as well?

Hi all
Resently I built a custom computer. I assembled it and it all looked good... but as it got to the startup of windows 7, just past the "starting windows" part, it reboots. Then I wanted to install windows 7 again to see if it would help. But when it gets to the "Starting windows" part, it stays there. I've tried countless things including: Testing the RAM, Changing the PSU, getting another windows 7 install disk, shifting the GPU. But none have worked the least!

I hope you guys can help!

When you insert the Windows 7 DVD and boot from it, are you seeing the Press any key to boot from CD or DVD command?

I'm not sure what you mean by "when I get to the menu it won't show up".

Even if that computer has a display adapter that doesn't support and have drivers for Windows 7, that won't stop it from booting and installing.

I've read every post I could find on this so I'm sorry to ask another dumb question but here goes.

I created an access database (volunteer work) which has an autoincrement field to issue numbers to animals taken in at our shelter. My 'boss' (also a volunteer) wants this simple autoincrement changed to a value which begins with the two digit year and then has 4 digits, starting with 0001 which will increment sequentially and restart at 0001 with the new calendar year. Therefore, records will start with 10-0001, 10-0002, etc for this year and 11-0001, 11-0002 for next year.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I found a post on this exact topic from back in 2010. I am trying to incorporate the code into my database and am not able to get the code to work if I make any changes. Here is the link to the previous thread:

I have also uploaded the database that was provided in the last post. If I try to change the field and object names I appear to be unsuccessful in having the code still work even when I change the items in the code as well. I woud like some help. I would like for there to be a field called "RequestDate" that has the date stamp that is keyed in by the user. Then after that is keyed in on the form the "AssignmentID" field is updated to the new assignment number. The "RequestDate"="Admit_Date" and "AssignmentID"="ActualFWCNumber". I am trying to do this in Access 2010. If I make changes either the number field doesn't autopopulate or the same number keeps repeating. Any and all assistance on this would be great.

tamanthalou, welcome to the forum.
As you have posted the original database a copy of your database with no data in it would be better to understand your problem.

Recently (3 months ago) I built my computer. Couple of days ago, I decided to swap out my CPU cooler with a Corsair H70 water cooler and swap out some other fans. I had to take out a bunch of things and I wanted to do some cable management so I unplugged and replugged a few things. So after everything was fixed up and put back into place, I booted it up. It just went straight in the bios, after exiting it just went back. It does this every time. I checked and double checked all my HDD sata's and the hard drive is spinning I can feel it it. I have Windows 7 installed and this has worked in the past. Any tips or suggestions? Just ask for more info!

I have an installation folder on my main machine(Windows 7) with all my software. I have repeatedly run into issues connecting odd devices to my shared folder. This time I have installed Windows 10 Technical Preview (on a different machine) and don't understand why it tells me I can't access my own machine. After all these years, you would think user friendly would be a reality. It seems to be a coin toss as to which machines will connect. I hate never knowing I can access my own machine without issue. Here I am trying to install applications but yet I can't get to my storage location.

What is the secret to sharing your machine, so that anyone on the same network can access shared folders?

Edit: I always turn on "Network Discovery" and "File and Print Sharing".

A:Network connection issues (year after year)

I'm more brutal via the firewall:

set trust localhost and your lan ip's, eg

then add two rules for only the PRIVATE PROFILE

inbound allow tcp/udp from to any for ports 137-139,445
outbound allow tcp/udp from any to for ports 137-139,445
I use a much more complicate scheme in reality to enforce known vs unknown devices and to segregate WiFI from wired access, but that's just me.

In services, ensure these are running

Bonjour Service ( mDNSResponder)
Network Connections
Network List Service
Network Location Awareness

When I install Windows 7, the site says it will erase all of my programs, files, and settings. I would think this only applies for the harddrive that I am installing to, correct? I have three internal drives: a 250GB system drive and two 1TB storage/media drives. When I run the custom install for windows 7, it will only erase my C Drive, correct?

My computer is acting "normally" but wanted to check for cleanliness. The only thing it does that we do not like is freezing-up when surfing AND if listening to music using WMP. I thought it was maybe something to do with moving from scrolling the mouse to right or left-clicking it, too quickly, and also changing tunes. But not sure, really. This has always happened but not every time, so not sure if it is so terribly bothersome for me to delve into at this point. Let's just focus on "cleanliness" for now.

I went into safe mode and scanned using Ewido (24 items were "fixed") and the report follows. I used Cheeseball81's instructions to use Ewido from a different post in this forum. I then went into normal mode and am posting a Hijackthis's findings as well.

When trying to install SP 1 it claimed while performing the "genuine test" that it could not complete the test (stopped with error-code 0xC8000222)
After rebooting the computer it claimed that my win 7-version was not activated.
Each and every attempt of doing so failed...
It shows the product-ID in the system-folder as well as a link to activate the version or a link to change the product key, but when clicking on it nothing happens...

tried the "slui.exe 4", nothing happens...
Is it possible that something is amiss with SAM?

No. It doesn't mean it's free only for 1 year. It means that you have 1 year to claim your free copy. You can do the upgrade now or later but if you do it after 29 July 2016 you'll have to buy it so take your time and decide if you want it now. Each month's numbering starts on the first with the first being in the block that corresponds to the month and day of week for that month. Seems so simple. I want to put it into excel and access what they write for the specific days and use it to create folders. eg. Jan 1 20114 is a Wed. March 3, is a Monday and has APC planning sessions. I want to create a folder on a predefined path /APC/3 March 2014. Sounds easy - but I can't even create this calendar! Can anyone advise? [ps doesn't copy nice, have used ... to space out]
(columns) Jan Feb Mar etc
Wed........ 1
Thu ........ 2
Fri .......... 3
Sat.......... 4.. 1... 1
Sun ..........5.. 2.. 2
Mon .........6.. 3... 3 APC
Tue ..........7.. 4... 4
Wed......... 8.. 5... 5
Thu ..........9.. 6... 6
Fri (etc .... 10. 7... 7

My 96-year-old father-in-law's vision is fading. He's been complaining that his 6-year-old 24-inch LCD HP monitor isn't bright enough. Tonight, I took my one of my 27-inch Hanns-G monitors to his house and connected it. He says it is brighter and told me to get him one.

Well, now I'm wondering about brightness and contrast and whether one with even better numbers might do even better for him; but, I don't know anything much about such ratings.

Please advise me.

I used to watch videos on and About 6 months ago, I couldn't access guba any more, I'd get a notice "the connection was reset" when I tried to access it. About a week ago, the same thing started happening with, and it's driving me nuts trying to figure out what's wrong.I use both Firefox and I.E. Explorer, both updated, same problem with both. I don't use a router, my computer's connected directly to my DSL modem. I've turned off and restarted my modem, it didn't fix anything, I've deleted my history on both browsers, it didn't fix anything. I haven't eliminated my cookies because, oddly, I couldn't find cookies for either Guba or Surfthechannel.

Is there any method of solving this problem,so I can access these websites again ? This problem seems very common, but I haven't been able to find any comprehensible procedure for figuring out what's wrong. I wish somebody would invent a little App that could diagnose what the problem is. If anyone knows how to solve this problem, let me know step by step, and I'll post my results. Thanks...

Encountered a small but irritating problem between Access 2000 and Access 2003. Designed a table and input form in Access 2000 that contain a date field to capture credit card expiration dates, which are always only month and year. Made the format "m/yy" with an input mask of #0/00;0;_. Works perfectly in my Access 2000, but when I installed the application on a client's (non-profit org.) computers, which have Access 2003, every entry of a year other than this year (06) gets changed to 06. E.g., if the user enters 0508 and tabs to the next field, it displays "5/06". It behaves as though it thinks you entered only the month and DAY, but since the format has to be m/yy, it displays the 5 and tacks on the current year.

Access (at least Access 2000) does not offer a built-in month/year format. So how can I make the field understand that what goes in there is supposed to be only month and year? Is it possible to do with a Date/Time field type, or do I need to make it Text, or what?

Here is the entire story and right now I am a bit distressed after realizing that a new $60 router was not the solution. I have had my precious computer for a over a year now when I built it myself last May and it has never had this problem as far as I can remember. I get decently fast internet at ~12mbps according to speedtest but the problem is that it comes and goes, A LOT. Every 10th web page I browse locks up and I have to reload and games are truly unplayable. I lag out of Warcraft 3 constantly (have not played a full game in weeks) and cannot play 5 minutes of counter strike source or Team fortress 2 without lagging miserably. watching youtube videos or downloading anything else off the internet hits these exact same walls and leaves me staring at 0kb/s on the firefox download manager. I finally got some time and over the last 2 weeks I've been testing theories but to no avail. Here is the steps in order of how I tried to solve my problem.

-Replaced old cat 5e network cable with brand new Cat6 cable from Newegg.

-Tested NOD32 and Spybot search and destroy, ran a panda online scan. Found nothing.

-Reformatted computer and did not install Nvidia forceware network access manager (I've been told that it ruins some things).

-Had comcast guy come to house and check internet. He told me that it was my router and that it was not on comcast's end.

-COmcast gave me a new modem anyways, some motorolo brand although I don't know model.

sorry me again .. I want to try do system restore to the point I am sure was running pretty good which is some point last year probably Novemeber.. But my system restore in windows xp SP3, Latititude D505 does go beyond January of this year. Please may I know what would have happe ned to all those system restores, I have done manually or automatic system restores of all previous years. I think I will try to go working good one times. If I cannot resolve my issues.

A:[SOLVED] system restore to last year point

Your old System Restore points do not remain available indefinitely.
System Restore can only use a pre-allocated amount of disk space to store restore points.
When this allocated space becomes full, the oldest restore points are automatically deleted to make room for new ones.

The best method of keeping a system state indefinitely is to use disk-imaging software to create an image of your hard drive, but you need a second hard drive to store it on.
An example of disk-imaging software is this (which I use):

So I bought a used PC which had Windows 7 Ultimate about a year ago. It's a somewhat old desktop PC, 4GB RAM, average stuff, nothing extraordinary but not a dinosaur either. A couple days ago a message started popping up saying I needed to validate my Windows; quite odd since I'd been using the computer for a year already. Anyways, I downloaded the program suggested by the message, and it said Microsoft couldn't complete the validation process. I should also mention that I want to upgrade to Windows 10 but don't have any of the required updates, which also don't appear on W. Update.
I downloaded the MGADiag thing, if it's any use. If my Windows turns out to be invalid, what can I do? Will I still be able to download Win 10?

Boot into BIOS setup, reset to defaults, save changes. If an EFI BIOS you'll need to decide if you want UEFI BIOS vs. Legacy BIOS. If UEFI follow these special steps for Install, otherwise enable Legacy BIOS or Compatibility Support Module to proceed with normal install:

Set DVD drive first to boot, HD second, set SATA controller to AHCI, Save changes and Exit.

Then boot into Windows 7 installer DVD or flash stick burned or written using tool and latest ISO for your licensed OS version here. I would use a fresh ISO written with tool in Step 2 as yours is in question.

Windows XP the third-most popular OS after 15 years
It seems crazy to think that there are people out there using a 15-year-old operating system, but it’s happening. In fact, so many people are still running Windows XP right now that it is currently the third-most popular OS in use.
Microsoft actually stopped supporting Windows XP two years ago, which means the platform no longer sees updates of any kind — not even critical security patches. What’s more, even third-party developers like Google have stopped supporting it.
Despite all this, Windows XP’s 10.9 percent share of the market means it has a larger install base than Apple’s latest OS X El Capitan software (4.05 percent), and Windows 8.1 (9.56 percent). Windows 10 just about beats it with 14.15 percent...
Windows 7 still reigns king, with a whopping 51.89 percent share of the user base.
Remark:   This is NOT surprising.   Windows XP was a very "solid" OS... especially in comparison to its predecessor (Win ME) and successor (Vista).   It worked very well, and people liked it.   And let's face it:  people don't throw away "appliances" [be it a computer, microwave, refrigerator, and especially a car] just because its warrantee period has expired.
So okay, a computer is not a car. &nbs... Read more

A:15 year-old Windows XP the 3rd-most popular OS

Yep...totally agree. A much more intuitive interface and a much simpler format and layout. You could find where to go and how to get stuff done without having to conduct a self directed search wondering where everything was changed to or hidden. Vista wasn't so bad and has worked well on my old XPS-420 but Windows 7 started the veer toward the dark side. If this machine fails I am going shopping for a rehabbed Dell with Winndows 7. Have no need or desire to have a screen full of tiles that I have to swipe.
I did some temp work a few years ago for a major health insurance company as they were ramping up for ACA. The OS they were upgrading from was DOS! That was an interesting experience, to say the least. Had so many programs open we had to use two monitors.

I have windows XP media edition on a Gateway 510XL 3.2 mhz machine. My AVG was expiring so I decided to try another program. I got McAfee security suite and installed it on my system. I had problems on the install (conflict with ad-aware plus) and tried to reinstall. Before reinstall I picked up a bug that automatically resets my home page to every time I reboot.

I installed McAfee and my system ran very slow and the date was reset to 1970 and cannot be changed. I removed McAfee and now the date is fixed at 1990. Is this progress?

Checked the BIOs and it had the same year.

Rechecked the BIOs date was 4/09/1990

Replaced battery, no change BIOs date is 4/10/1990
reset the BIOS date to 4/09/2007
saved and started reboot
reentered BIOS F2 on the bootup date was 4/09/2007
at XP Welcome screen selected "administrator"
date error message appeared
The Windows start up sound (tones) stops half way through
Check Processes running
there is a Nortons.exe that has to be deleted before the boot will complete fully
there are also some unknown processes running that would give me alerts when I had the McAfee security system installed that they were trying to access the internet.
there are two others but they disappear quickly
These are listed as "administrator" files

Time appears to be correct at 22:51
replaced battery no change
rebooted - changed bios date remained 4-10-1990

A:Windows year will not reset

Sounds like you should try a new battery. If that solves the date/time problem, then run an HJT scan and put it in the Security forum for analysis.

Hi I am sure I am not alone, but I honestly have my machine on literally 20 hours a day non stop working away. Its my work horse especially since I work online running a business.

Anyways - I am noticing a few things going a bit wrong like chkdsk.exe not working and a few other issues.

WOuld you suggest that it is a good thing to re-install a clean version of windows 7 from a previous image you made or is that a waste of time?

I mean, if my image backup has missing and corrupt registry items then I guess whats the point?

Thoughts please!

PS I wouldn't be able to re-build the system I have since there are way too many tweaks and setings to re-do, but I think that I have some issues.....

Maybe I should re-install the registry?

A:Should you re-install Windows every year?

I do mine every 6 months. Just to make sure it's clean.

With your drivers, files, and program installers organised. It's a 2 hour investment every 6 months. And Having a clean image with no updates or programs installed helps.

Why not?

Hello, as the title says I am in my first year of Network Administration courses at my local technical college. Being that I have used this website in the past for help with my computer, I figured it would be a good place to get some miscellaneous questions answered to help with clarifying certain concepts of networking for me. So here goes my first question:

-Is it possible for two nodes to have the same IP within the same network as long as they have different subnet masks (ie on different network segments)?
-Also; say a network that uses DHCP still has nodes with statically assigned IPs on the network(for instance if DHCP was implemented as an upgrade somewhat recently); Is it possible for the DHCP server to assign a new node a previously set and still current static IP? or if this were to happen would it cause problems on the network?

I recently had to go back and post a lot of data for a prior year.

Entering 5-6-3 gave me a date of May 6, 2003. There were hundreds of entries to be made and I wondered how to set the spreadsheet to assume that the year was 2003 for all of them (so I didn't have to input the "-3" each time)? But, of course, any time I allowed the spreadsheet to assume the year, it assumed the current year.

Is there a way to change that assumption- so that entering 5-6 would give me the day of May 6, 2003 without constantly inputting the -3 (or/3)?

So frustrated. I know my facebook works as I have borrowed a friends laptop but need to return this weekend.

I have a notebook and it has been in repairs twice in a few months, both times the hard drive was replaced. I didn't use facebook inbetween the hard drives being replaced. Its all coved by KnowHow so did have to pay for the repairs.

However, facebook still isn't working (not the reason for the repairs), everytime I login within a few seconds its says not responding, it slows down all my other open programmes and it always ends in END PROGRAMME.

Got rid of Norton, as friend said it could be Norton. Didn't make any difference. At a total loss why it doesn't work on my notebook anymore.

I have a 3 year old notebook running Win 7 Pro/sp1 x32. For various reasons, I have not used it since early in 2015 and kept it shut off. It's a nice little travel companion, but had been replaced by a more powerful Dell laptop more suitable to my current needs. It occurred to me the notebook could still serve as a nice platform for testing programs, rather than risk my workhorse desktop - also running Win 7. Then I realized that absolutely no updates to Windows or to programs had been made in almost 2 years. (Don't try this at home!) So I fired it up, and rolled up my sleeves.First stop was Windows Update, to see what I had missed. The search for updates took all night. Turns out there were only about 90 Important and 40 optional updates listed, totaling almost half a GB, waiting for download. Included were 15-20 of those pesky .Net Framework updates. Yikes! Where to begin? So I selected the one at the top - a Cumulative Update for IE 11, published in Aug/2016 - as a reasonable one to test first. It got hung up at 5% into the download, and timed out. Back to the desktop, where things had slowed down to a crawl. Task Manager showed that svchost.exe was hogging between 50-100% of the CPU. Great, there are only about a dozen processes that use svchost. But one of those services is for  Windows Updater, which was running under manual mode. But stopping that service didn't seem to speed things up in general.Since system slowdowns can be caused by malware spoofing ... Read more

A:Windows Updates after a 1.5 Year Hiatus

I make it a point to turn on all my home PCs at least monthly --- specifically, for the sake of Windows Updates.   I'll typically also run Secunia's PSI, to help upgrade any other programs (typically browsers) I have on these systems.
Win7 (laptop, but which I use as if it were a desktop) is my primary system, my workhorse, for all daily chores.   Surprising, WinXP (laptop) is my secondary system... I keep it in the bedroom, so I don't have to carry my Win7 around the house.   I'm amazed how much can still be done on an XP system... especially since I downloaded and started using avast's SafeZone browser.   I also have an 8.1 tablet, which I use occasionally, but find its onscreen keyboard inconvenient when I wish to do a lot of typing [and this explains why my WinXP retains its secondary position in my household].

Hi, I have an old (but working amazingly good!) 64bit processor HP Compaq 6730s, upgraded with a SSD drive and 8gb DDR2 ram memory. Currently it is dual-booting running windows 7 home premium, 64 bit edition, pretty smoothly -it has given no problems so far, and Ubuntu 14.04. I am pretty tempted to upgrade to windows 10, but given that it is a relatively old computer, I am not sure wether the hardware will be fully compatible with w10... and also I do not want to loose my partitions! So what do you recommend me... shall I go for it? Thank you very much for your help and for creating amazing computers like the 6730s! Gonzalo

Dear tech support,

(Since this is my first post here, I hope it is in the right forum. My apologies if it isn't!)

The title pretty much describes the question I'm asking myself right now. I just noticed that all files, folders and software from the last year are missing. The most recent data is from May 2nd and onwarts (just the things I did on my pc since then), anything before that date is gone until april 2012. So basically there is a 1-year gap from which all data seems to have been removed.

More curiously: files, folders and software I have deleted in the past, are now back in the place they once were. This leads to me think that, somehow, my pc has performed/suffered a rollback of about a year after the Windows updates from May 2nd.

The whole thing puzzles me completely, never have I experienced something like this. Googling for information didn't help much either, nowhere could I find a similar story. Contacting the online Windows support chat resulted in a constant 'no employees are available', hence I decided to raise my question here.

Basically I want to ask you: do you have any idea what has happened and/or what to do about it? I am just clueless.

Some additional information:
- I am running Windows 7 Home Premium service pack 1
- My PC is about 5 years old, the oldest data dates back to 2008 and 2009. As mentioned, the old data is still present, it's just the most recent year or so that's gone
- The problem seems to have started after a large Windows update ... Read more

A:Did windows perform a 1-year rollback, by itself?

Windows restore from a recovery point does not affect user data only Windows system files. Even if you rolled back to a point that was a year old the user data would stay. It sounds more like a backup was restored but without user intervention I don't see how that would happen.

What do you use, if anything, for backup?

I have a Dell Inspiron 1300 running on Windows XP. It always says the year is 2005. The month and the day are correct, just not the year, and the time is always a few minutes off.

Every time you try to adjust it in the Date/Time section and click apply, it immediately goes back to 2005.

I have also gone into BIOS and changed it there, but when I exit BIOS and the computer starts, the year is always back to 2005.

I have done every diagnostic scan Dell told me to do several times and the hardware says it's fine. I even replaced my battery for good measure.

Please help! The date affects all my file dates which causes a lot of problems for me.

I built this computer about a year ago and installed a legit upgrade copy of Windows 7 Ultimate (installed a friend's copy of Windows 7 just to get through the upgrade process). I've had no problems with the OS until a few days ago when I noticed one of my USB devices turned off (a PS3 controller configured with MotionJoy). Then I noticed Windows came up with several notices claiming it wasn't genuine. It was displayed in popups and in the bottom right-hand corner of my desktop.

Apparently, Microsoft Security Essentials triggered it. This wasn't the first time I've had to deal with a validation issue in a Windows PC. I usually just had to run the validation tool and be done with it. However, when I ran the tool this time, it simply took me to a screen where I could buy a new copy of Windows 7 Ultimate (or a new activation key?) to resolve missing security files. Obviously I'm not going to do that, but I'm running out of options other than perhaps running the Windows 7 Ultimate upgrade installer again and hoping that it returns Windows to default.

As it stands, I've tried reactivating, but it gives me an error message. I've tried running Windows Update because it seems that it stopped updating on the 21st, and that's when the latest security pack was installed. However, I get a code C0000022 error whenever I try to update. Should I just redo my upgrade installation or is there some other way to fix this? I'd appreciate a... Read more

This just in from ZDnet by Ed Bott, that MSFT will cease to allow new machines to be sold with Win7 on them.  I've not read the article yet, but it should be self explanatory.  So do your shopping now. That's what I'm going to do.  Now.
Ironically, I just now uploaded three videos showing what business laptops are being sold by Lenovo, Dell, HP to prove that they aren't selling Win10 machines.  They are using Win8.1 licenses' downgrade rights to sell Win7.  The videos are updates on the ones I did back at the beginning of September, to see if the September results were still valid.
You can see the videos here (Dell), here (HP) and here (Lenovo, but the video shows the Win7 machines sold out);  vids were made 10/26 and at least Dell has radically changed its website interface now.  The videos are boring, though.  Better to just go to the websites, instead.
The Dell machines shown in the video are mostly gone, now; or, the website redesign makes it look that way.  The machines shown in the video are now (right now, this minute) showing as only available preconfigured in Win7Pro 64 or Win10.  When just now I did a mock purchase, those were the only options:  not, Win8.  You'll find more Win8 machines available on HP.
Thank you for your time.  So much of my life would be so much worse, were it not for BC.  I hope to 'give back'.  Thank you again.

Hello community. Me and my wife, have a PC with Win8.1 installed. The thing is that the constant requirement of entering user passwords everything we switch is very annoying.

Is there anyway to bypass password screens for all users when Windows are booting or when we change users?

Thank in advance for your time

A:Multi-year Windows 8.1 without passwords

Hi Gonik, welcome to the Eight Forums.

That can be done using a Local Account. Windows 8 and 8.1 can use either a Microsoft Account or a Local Account, difference being that a Microsoft Account is connected to an email address. As an email account always requires a password it cannot be removed, therefore the password is also required when signing in to Windows. To put it very short, a Microsoft Account always needs a password.

A Local Account is traditional Windows user account as used in Windows 7 and earlier versions. It may or may not have a password, as user has selected, and even if the password is selected it can be removed. When a Local Account is used in Windows 8 or 8.1, the user can select a separate and individual email account to be used with each Windows Store App needing an email account.

Thanks for the heads up. Unfortunately the BBC news left out the fine print shown on Windows 10 page on Microsoft's site here. Quoted: ?It is our intent that most of these devices will qualify, but some hardware/software requirements apply and feature availability may vary by device. Devices must be connected to the internet and have Windows Update enabled. ISP fees may apply. Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 8.1 Update required. Some editions are excluded: Windows 7 Enterprise, Windows 8/8.1 Enterprise, and Windows RT/RT 8.1. Active Software Assurance customers in volume licensing have the benefit to upgrade to Windows 10 Enterprise outside of this offer. We will be sharing more information and additional offer terms in coming months.?Also quoted is the need to sign up for email for the upgrade offer using your Microsoft account.i_Xp/Vista/W7Usermessage edited by XpUser

Hi TechSupport,

I built a gaming pc about a year ago now and never really took notice of my boot time until I saw it side by side with my old laptop. It has a significantly slower boot time compared to my laptop and I have no idea why. When I switch it on the BIOS goes by normally as it should and then it starts the "Starting Windows" section. Once the animation is finished it hangs there for a good 20-30 seconds before moving onto the log in part. I have checked Task Manager after the computer is fully booted; it had 59 processes, cpu was at 0% and memory usage was at 27-30%. I don't have any useless software installed (unless you count games as useless). I'd appreciate any help that you can give me.
EDIT: My system specs can be viewed on the side

I need to figure out how to create a query that groups data by date. But the tricky part is that I need to group by Year, not the actual dates recorded in the columns. To make it even more tricky, it needs to be a running total.

Eventually, this query is going to be used as the source of a line graph that shows how many projects our company has "approved" over time. The X axis is going to be Year and the Y axis is going to be "Number of Projects"

Each project has its own record in the database, along with its own date on which it was approved in a MM/DD/YYYY format.

As for the running total: the graph is going to be constantly going up. For example: if in 2000 we had 0 projects approved, then in 2001 we approved 5 projects, then 2000 would have a point at 5. Then in 2002 we approved 2 projects, the line would need to go up to 7, not jump down to 2 for 2002.

How can I get my query to return the Year on the X axis and the running total on the Y axis? Is this even possible, or can I only get it to work in Excel?

Attached is a picture of what the end chart is going to look like (in Excel... but I need to use Access).

I have a Toshiba laptop, if you need specs I can provide. The only thing I know is that there is 4gig of RAM.

It boots fine in safe mode, but when booting normally, it either hangs at the 'welcome' screen, or starts up and freezes after about a minute (and that is just highlighting things etc, no chance in hell of actually opening anything)

I did a virus scan in avast, found a few little things but nothing serious, and made no difference to the problem.

Tried to schedule a boot time scan, as well as a 'chkdsk' boot scan, neither worked.

Thought overheating may be a factor, so I blew compressed air into the fan vents, a bit of dust came out but it made little difference.

The only thing I have done differently recently, is I bought an internet plan and have therefore been downloading some things online. Also downloaded an MKV player.

Any help would be greatly appreciated :) Like I said, if you need anything to help, let me know.

I ran numerous speed tests and found out my less powerful hp was dogging my brand new more powerful computer. Best buy refunded the purchase completely but not with out a fight. At first they said it was not the computers fault and the Samsung was indeed faster as they pointed out the .3 GHZ advantage it had over the 2.2GHZ hp. They said internet speed is the only factor when speed testing...NONSENSE. I tested both computers on the same internet and the hp was faster in every category every time. The tech and I speed tested the two laptops once side by side and the hp won. Still he said It's not the computer. Hello all. For two weeks now I've been trying to help an 84 year old veteran fix his virus infected 2 year old Windows 8 Gateway (Walmart) desktop. The poor old guy was a first time PC buyer when he purchased this PC two years ago, & didn't comprehend the implications of not renewing his anti-virus 60 day trial version. Consequently after continuing to operate his PC online for almost two years afterwards, he got badly infected. I went over there to help him a couple of weeks ago & it was obviously infected. I installed Malewarebytes, which found over 2100 malewares & 7 trojans... I've used factory restore from both inside Windows 8 & from boot, & it of course works but won't validate Windows 8 once it completes. I've even tried clearing cmos to no avail. It simply cannot read the encrypted product ID key from the UEFI bios. I could go into another (horrible) story about the third party out of warranty support vendor Acer references on their site, but really what good would it do at this point? Does anyone have a fix for this? Thanks in advance for your time, consideration, & effort!regards, Frank

I have an Asus K53E laptop that I purchased a little over a year ago and I bought it from Best Buy with an extended plan etc. The computer pops up with a message about not a genuine windows and after having three computer guys "repair" it now it is losing drivers for windows. In order to get it to boot I have to tell it to drop windows signature to see my desktop. I have been told this is a RAM problem and to download the drivers from the Asus site which I did and it did nothing. Seems to be a windows boot problem and I am tired of spending money on this machine. I have already spent its worth in repair people to constantly recover the machine. Laptops should last longer than a year I would assume. Now this one is an expensive paperweight. Any ideas?

A:Windows 7 not genuine anymore after one year of usage.

You have a counterfeit installation using the infamous stolen Lenova key.

Buy a retail version of Windows from a reputable store, format, then install.

Hey Everyone, new member here!

I've been reading this forum for years, but never had the need to ask a question myself until now... I'm hoping anyone can help me figure out what the heck is

wrong with my computer... I simply CANNOT use Microsoft Update! This has been the case for about a year I think, and I have never found a solution to it

and I have tried everything I read online and nothing will fix it....

- Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit
- Sony Vaio VPCF127FX (3 years old)
- Bitdefender Total Security 2013
- Disabled windows firewall/anti-virus/defender
- When trying to 'check for updates', I always get this error:
And error occured while checking for new updates for your computer. Error(s) Found: Code 80073712
- Cannot Install Internet Explorer 9!!
Things I've tried:
- My computer cannot run/execute SFC utility in prompt. It always gives this error:
Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.
- I've tried Microsoft Fix it and it finds no problems
- I've tried the latest 'System Update and Readiness Tool'
- I'm confident it has nothing to do with bitdefender. Even so, I've disabled it and removed it to see if it was an issue and this problem is the same.

- Checking Windows Event Logs Gives This information:

Hi. I was playing "Jazz Jackrabbit 2" on my computer, and it crashed with some kind of application error several times in a couple of hours. I've attached a screenshot of the error window(s). Also, for next time, how do I place an image inline in a post?

One more thing. Can someone give me a little information or links to information about what the Assembly Language registers pertain to in the Application Error windows of the screenshot? I've just started teaching myself Assembly Language, so I'm curious

A:What could cause a 17-year-old game to crash on a modern Windows 7?!

I`m shocked you could even install a 17 year old game

...and told him to open calculator. I had him start on the Desktop. He first looks for the Start button, to no avail. Looking confused, he thinks for a second, the just starts typing "calculator" on the Desktop. After that doesn't work, he starts clicking around until he accidentally grabs the top of the screen and pins it on the side. He then clicks in the empty space and makes it to the Start screen. Then, he looks for calculator in my pinned things, and after no success, he then types "calculator" again and successfully opens the program. His first comments "well, it will take some getting use to, but it's no big deal." I then show him how the Start button actually is there, just hidden. He affirms that yeah it's no big deal, just will take some getting used to.

Later, he was watching me use my PC, and I downloaded the Wikipedia app and pinned it. After that, I put down the computer and played some Xbox with him beside me. He's very interested in history, so he picks up the computer, and goes into the Wikipedia app. He asks me how to search in the app, and I showed him how to use Charms. After that, he was using it as if he had his whole life. He searches some Wikipedia, then when he can't find what he wanted there, he goes back to Start (using the hidden button) and hit the IE icon (which sends him to the desktop) and uses it to search and find things. I show him how he could bring up the recent apps menu to quickly go back to Wikipedia, an... Read more
